Welcome back... 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 before the break, we were taking a look at the Laver 00:00:02.73\00:00:05.50 which is the second article of furniture in the sanctuary. 00:00:05.53\00:00:08.57 It was a place of washing 00:00:08.60\00:00:10.21 where the priest would wash their hands and their feet 00:00:10.24\00:00:13.98 and this physical washing typified a spiritual washing 00:00:14.01\00:00:17.71 that God wants to do with each one of us. 00:00:17.75\00:00:19.65 In Ezekiel chapter 36 verse 25 the Bible says, 00:00:19.68\00:00:22.92 "I will sprinkle clean water on you; and you will be clean; 00:00:22.98\00:00:28.29 I will cleanse you from all your impurities 00:00:28.32\00:00:32.03 and from all your idols. " 00:00:32.06\00:00:34.26 I like the emphasis of how this verse brings out the reality 00:00:34.30\00:00:38.33 that it's actually God who does the cleansing. 00:00:38.37\00:00:42.00 We can't cleanse ourselves. 00:00:42.04\00:00:44.07 God says, "Look, I'm going to be the One that cleanses you... 00:00:44.11\00:00:47.11 I'm going to be the One that washes you... 00:00:47.14\00:00:49.28 I'm going to be the One that makes you pure... " 00:00:49.31\00:00:52.71 and the Laver... 00:00:52.75\00:00:54.08 the washing represents the spiritual regeneration 00:00:54.12\00:00:57.89 that God wants to do with each one of us. 00:00:57.95\00:01:00.62 The implication of the spiritual washing that we experience 00:01:00.66\00:01:04.93 by the grace of God 00:01:04.96\00:01:06.29 indicates that there is defilement that takes place 00:01:06.33\00:01:10.83 every time we sin. 00:01:10.87\00:01:13.97 We get spiritually dirty 00:01:14.00\00:01:16.77 and the Laver represents the washing that God wants to bring 00:01:16.81\00:01:21.01 into our lives and our spiritual nature. 00:01:21.04\00:01:23.88 Now, in Acts chapter 22 verse 16, the Bible says, 00:01:23.91\00:01:27.78 "And now what are you waiting for? 00:01:27.82\00:01:29.78 Get up, be baptized and wash away your sins, 00:01:29.82\00:01:35.06 calling on His name. " 00:01:35.09\00:01:37.63 This is an instance in Scripture where the Bible brings out 00:01:37.66\00:01:41.70 that baptism is a symbol of the washing away of sin. 00:01:41.73\00:01:47.50 In the Christian experience, 00:01:47.54\00:01:49.24 this is one place in which water is used 00:01:49.27\00:01:52.27 and that water... the waters of baptism, 00:01:52.31\00:01:55.24 according to Acts, represents the washing away of sin. 00:01:55.28\00:01:59.85 Now, when you get baptized, that water is not holy water... 00:01:59.88\00:02:05.05 I've news for you, 00:02:05.09\00:02:06.52 that water is not sanctified water 00:02:06.55\00:02:09.52 but that water is a symbol... an important symbol 00:02:09.56\00:02:13.40 of what the Holy Spirit has done in your heart 00:02:13.43\00:02:17.17 and you want to publicly demonstrate in that ceremony... 00:02:17.20\00:02:22.50 that beautiful ceremony of baptism... 00:02:22.54\00:02:24.61 of the cleansing that has taken place in your heart... 00:02:24.64\00:02:28.31 the washing away of sin. 00:02:28.34\00:02:31.51 So, that's one place where baptism is mentioned. 00:02:31.55\00:02:34.12 Now, you notice that the Laver 00:02:34.15\00:02:36.65 is the second article of furniture in the sanctuary... 00:02:36.69\00:02:39.59 It is not the last article... it is not the first article... 00:02:39.62\00:02:42.66 it is the second article of furniture 00:02:42.69\00:02:44.36 and some people think that when they're baptized 00:02:44.39\00:02:47.76 it's like graduation... it's like you've arrived. 00:02:47.80\00:02:51.10 In reality, you have just begun. 00:02:51.13\00:02:54.10 It does not indicate that you're perfect, 00:02:54.14\00:02:56.81 far from it... 00:02:56.84\00:02:58.17 but it indicates that you've accepted of the provision 00:02:58.21\00:03:01.18 of Jesus Christ, 00:03:01.21\00:03:02.54 and you've asked for the cleansing in your own heart. 00:03:02.58\00:03:04.91 You see, graduation is not this thing 00:03:04.95\00:03:06.92 where you come to this place and you say, 00:03:06.95\00:03:09.42 "Lord, I'm perfect... I've arrived... 00:03:09.45\00:03:11.52 I've achieved all these things. " 00:03:11.55\00:03:13.59 Quite the contrary... 00:03:13.62\00:03:14.99 baptism is a symbol 00:03:15.02\00:03:17.13 of the new birth 00:03:17.16\00:03:19.23 and when you look in the sanctuary, 00:03:19.26\00:03:21.06 it is the second article of furniture. 00:03:21.10\00:03:23.97 In other words, you come to Jesus just the way that you are, 00:03:24.00\00:03:27.67 you accept Him as Savior of your life, 00:03:27.70\00:03:30.07 and you are baptized. 00:03:30.11\00:03:32.54 You come to the altar... the burnt offering... 00:03:32.57\00:03:34.74 accept Him as Savior, 00:03:34.78\00:03:36.11 then you come to the Laver and you say, 00:03:36.14\00:03:38.38 "Lord, I want to be baptized. " 00:03:38.41\00:03:40.18 I want to be cleansed by this water 00:03:40.22\00:03:42.48 which symbolizes the cleansing of my own heart. 00:03:42.52\00:03:46.89 This is where baptism comes into place. 00:03:46.96\00:03:49.19 Now, some people have asked this question, 00:03:49.22\00:03:51.46 "Is there a case for re-baptism?" 00:03:51.49\00:03:55.30 Now, the Bible brings out two instances 00:03:55.33\00:03:57.97 in which re-baptism is appropriate. 00:03:58.00\00:04:00.54 One of them is, when you're given new life 00:04:00.57\00:04:03.37 like in the book of Acts, 00:04:03.41\00:04:04.74 individuals had only been baptized 00:04:04.77\00:04:06.44 by the baptism of John, 00:04:06.47\00:04:07.81 they did not hear... 00:04:07.84\00:04:09.18 or had not heard of the Holy Spirit or Jesus Christ, 00:04:09.21\00:04:11.11 they were re-baptized, 00:04:11.15\00:04:13.28 so, if you have been walking with Jesus 00:04:13.31\00:04:15.78 and you come upon new light such as the Sabbath 00:04:15.82\00:04:19.79 or the state of the dead... 00:04:19.82\00:04:21.16 new light in Scripture that has been rediscovered 00:04:21.19\00:04:24.23 or discovered for you... 00:04:24.26\00:04:26.23 that is a case in which it's Biblically supported 00:04:26.26\00:04:29.53 to be appropriate to be re-baptized. 00:04:29.56\00:04:32.23 There are other cases where re-baptism would be appropriate 00:04:32.30\00:04:35.87 and that is when there is a significant 00:04:35.90\00:04:37.97 public falling away from sin. 00:04:38.04\00:04:40.18 Now, there are cases in which we make a mistake 00:04:40.21\00:04:45.81 or someone in the Christian community makes a mistake 00:04:45.88\00:04:48.32 that causes a stain upon the community of Christ 00:04:48.35\00:04:53.56 and that would be a case 00:04:53.59\00:04:55.89 in which someone would be re-baptized. 00:04:55.92\00:04:58.43 Now, I would say that re-baptism should be something 00:04:58.46\00:05:01.33 that is prayerfully considered 00:05:01.36\00:05:02.80 I was meeting with this one individual 00:05:02.86\00:05:05.67 that wanted to be re-baptized 00:05:05.70\00:05:07.34 and I said, "How many times have you been re-baptized?" 00:05:07.37\00:05:11.24 And he said, "Eight. " 00:05:11.27\00:05:12.81 And I said, "Brother, I think you're... 00:05:12.84\00:05:15.24 you're overdoing it here a little bit 00:05:15.28\00:05:17.45 because re-baptism was not something 00:05:17.48\00:05:19.51 that was to be done over and over again. 00:05:19.55\00:05:22.98 There are special instances for re-baptism. " 00:05:23.02\00:05:26.59 In Titus chapter 3 verse 5, the Bible says, 00:05:26.62\00:05:30.13 "He saved us, not because of righteous things 00:05:30.19\00:05:33.43 which we have done, but because of His mercy. 00:05:33.46\00:05:36.87 He saved us through the washing of rebirth 00:05:36.90\00:05:40.24 and the renewal by the Holy Spirit. " 00:05:40.30\00:05:43.74 You notice what the Bible says 00:05:43.77\00:05:45.11 that it's the Holy Spirit that washes us. 00:05:45.14\00:05:48.34 He cleanses us... 00:05:48.38\00:05:49.88 the Holy Spirit comes into our lives 00:05:49.91\00:05:52.28 after we accept Jesus as our Savior, 00:05:52.31\00:05:55.18 and He cleanses us and He renews us 00:05:55.22\00:05:57.82 and when we are re-baptized, 00:05:57.85\00:06:00.56 that is a symbol of what has taken place 00:06:00.59\00:06:03.09 in our own lives... in our own hearts... 00:06:03.12\00:06:06.13 There's another place where we use water 00:06:06.16\00:06:09.13 and it's found in John chapter 13 verses 8 through 10, 00:06:09.16\00:06:12.63 Peter said to Him, You shall never wash my feet, 00:06:12.67\00:06:15.90 Jesus answered to him, "If I do not wash you, 00:06:15.94\00:06:19.14 you have no part with me. " 00:06:19.17\00:06:21.78 Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, not my feet only 00:06:21.84\00:06:25.11 but also my hands and my head. " 00:06:25.18\00:06:27.42 Jesus said to him, "He who is bathed... " 00:06:27.45\00:06:31.52 and notice the language here, 00:06:31.55\00:06:32.89 "needs only to wash his feet... " 00:06:32.92\00:06:36.32 what did Jesus mean? 00:06:36.36\00:06:37.73 "He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet. " 00:06:37.76\00:06:42.40 Scholars believe that this bathing 00:06:42.43\00:06:45.00 is a reference to baptism. 00:06:45.03\00:06:47.17 In other words, baptism is a symbol 00:06:47.20\00:06:50.74 of that bathing and washing 00:06:50.77\00:06:52.17 but he says that you must wash your feet 00:06:52.24\00:06:55.54 after you have bathed. 00:06:55.58\00:06:57.65 What this is a metaphor of 00:06:57.68\00:06:59.68 is that after we have accepted Jesus and been baptized 00:06:59.71\00:07:03.52 and we're walking the Christian walk, 00:07:03.59\00:07:06.12 metaphorically, our feet get dirty. 00:07:06.15\00:07:08.62 They need cleansing 00:07:08.66\00:07:10.29 and the foot-washing service 00:07:10.33\00:07:12.83 which takes place on a regular basis 00:07:12.86\00:07:16.67 in our community of faith, is sort of like a mini baptism 00:07:16.73\00:07:22.40 because after baptism, because of human weakness, 00:07:22.44\00:07:25.94 we make mistakes... we make foibles... 00:07:25.97\00:07:27.68 we make errors... 00:07:27.71\00:07:29.04 and every time we have that foot washing, 00:07:29.08\00:07:31.18 one of the symbols in the ceremonies 00:07:31.21\00:07:33.52 of the foot-washing service, 00:07:33.55\00:07:34.88 is that it takes care of those incidental mistakes... 00:07:34.92\00:07:39.55 it's like a mini-baptism 00:07:39.59\00:07:41.22 as we are walking the Christian walk 00:07:41.26\00:07:43.76 and the Christian experience. 00:07:43.83\00:07:45.29 So, I don't believe that re-baptism for... 00:07:45.36\00:07:49.80 for that individual that wanted to be re-baptized eight times 00:07:49.83\00:07:53.47 perhaps, he should have been using the foot-washing service 00:07:53.54\00:07:57.14 for those times that he felt that he made mistakes 00:07:57.17\00:08:00.21 that were not of an egregious nature. 00:08:00.24\00:08:02.34 What did Solomon call the Laver when he built the temple? 00:08:02.38\00:08:07.22 In 2nd Chronicles chapter 4 verse 2, 00:08:07.28\00:08:09.98 "He made the Sea of cast metal, circular in shape, 00:08:10.02\00:08:13.82 measuring ten cubits from rim to rim 00:08:13.86\00:08:17.33 and five cubits high. 00:08:17.36\00:08:19.13 He took a line of thirty cubits to measure around it. " 00:08:19.16\00:08:24.13 Now, Solomon was called to build the temple 00:08:24.17\00:08:27.00 and this temple was to replace the Mosaic sanctuary 00:08:27.04\00:08:32.41 that God had told Moses to build. 00:08:32.44\00:08:34.54 The... the tabernacle built by Moses was a... a... 00:08:34.58\00:08:38.51 a portable structure 00:08:38.55\00:08:39.98 and God instructed Solomon to build 00:08:40.02\00:08:43.59 a more permanent structure 00:08:43.62\00:08:45.12 and everything was upscaled including the Laver. 00:08:45.15\00:08:48.79 The Laver was so large in Solomon's temple 00:08:48.82\00:08:52.43 that the Bible called it, "A Sea... " 00:08:52.46\00:08:55.40 it was... it was huge... it was huge 00:08:55.43\00:08:58.40 now give me the dimensions of this... 00:08:58.43\00:09:00.07 we don't use cubits in today's age 00:09:00.14\00:09:02.40 and there's a debate out there 00:09:02.44\00:09:03.77 as to which cubit this was using... 00:09:03.81\00:09:06.11 the ancient cubit or the royal cubit 00:09:06.14\00:09:08.44 but it said... it took a line of 30 cubits to measure around it, 00:09:08.48\00:09:12.21 to give you some comparison, Noah's ark was 30 cubits high 00:09:12.25\00:09:17.79 and that was to house all the animals 00:09:17.82\00:09:20.19 so this was 30 cubits around... this was a huge structure... 00:09:20.22\00:09:24.73 I mean it was a huge Laver, 00:09:24.76\00:09:26.23 it was so large that when the Israelites looked at it, 00:09:26.26\00:09:28.40 they said, "It looks like the sea. " 00:09:28.43\00:09:30.50 So the Laver is also referred to the Sea in Solomon's temple. 00:09:30.53\00:09:35.64 Now, why are we emphasizing this? 00:09:35.70\00:09:37.57 Because in Revelation chapter 4 verse 6, 00:09:37.61\00:09:40.18 the Bible indicates... "Also, in front of the throne 00:09:40.21\00:09:44.08 there was what looked like a sea of glass... " 00:09:44.11\00:09:48.82 this is a scene in the New Jerusalem... 00:09:48.85\00:09:51.45 clear as crystal... 00:09:51.49\00:09:52.82 "In the center around the throne, 00:09:52.85\00:09:54.36 were four living creatures, and there they were 00:09:54.39\00:09:57.59 with their eyes in the front and in the back. " 00:09:57.63\00:10:00.26 So, you can see in front of God's throne, 00:10:00.30\00:10:02.26 in His holy temple, there is a sea... 00:10:02.30\00:10:05.30 and the Bible also points out in Revelation chapter 15 verse 2, 00:10:05.33\00:10:10.57 "I saw as it were a sea of glass 00:10:10.61\00:10:16.68 mingled with fire: 00:10:16.71\00:10:18.91 and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, 00:10:18.95\00:10:21.55 and over the image, and over his mark, 00:10:21.58\00:10:23.18 and over the number of his name, 00:10:23.25\00:10:24.59 stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God. " 00:10:24.62\00:10:30.23 This is a fascinating picture 00:10:30.26\00:10:31.66 because when the redeemed are standing before God... 00:10:31.69\00:10:34.96 they're standing not in the sea... 00:10:35.03\00:10:37.47 they're standing on the sea. 00:10:37.50\00:10:40.37 Now, the implication of this verse 00:10:40.40\00:10:43.00 is that God's people... 00:10:43.04\00:10:45.04 when they're in the New Heavens and the New Earth, 00:10:45.07\00:10:47.78 have no further need of cleansing. 00:10:47.81\00:10:50.88 They were on the sea... not in the sea. 00:10:50.95\00:10:54.62 This is from Dr. Leslie Hardinge, 00:10:54.65\00:10:55.98 "The final vision of the Laver leaves us with the assurance 00:10:56.02\00:10:59.69 that Christ-transformed disciples 00:10:59.75\00:11:02.06 would need no further purifications hereafter. 00:11:02.09\00:11:05.33 They will stand before the throne of the eternal judge 00:11:05.36\00:11:08.36 without fault. 00:11:08.40\00:11:09.76 Their robes of character washed and made white 00:11:09.80\00:11:13.80 by Calvary's twin streams. " 00:11:13.84\00:11:17.14 I praise God for that. 00:11:17.17\00:11:18.51 I praise the Lord for His cleansing power... 00:11:18.54\00:11:22.08 that he's able to cleanse us from all unrighteousness 00:11:22.11\00:11:24.91 and when we get to heaven, 00:11:24.95\00:11:26.41 we will not be in the sea... 00:11:26.45\00:11:27.88 implying that there's no need for cleansing, 00:11:27.92\00:11:30.09 we'll be on the sea 00:11:30.12\00:11:31.95 indicating that God has brought us all the way back. 00:11:31.99\00:11:36.56 Now, when you look in Scripture, 00:11:36.59\00:11:38.79 you can see that God wants to cleanse us 00:11:38.83\00:11:43.90 and in the story of the leper in Matthew chapter 8, 00:11:43.93\00:11:48.37 the leper comes to Jesus and says, 00:11:48.40\00:11:50.84 "If you are willing, you can make me clean. " 00:11:50.87\00:11:54.68 The Bible indicates that Jesus reached out His hand 00:11:54.71\00:11:59.41 and touched him. 00:11:59.45\00:12:00.98 Notice the order that God engages with this leper... 00:12:01.02\00:12:05.02 God did not say to the leper, 00:12:05.05\00:12:07.26 "Look, be clean and then I will accept you. " 00:12:07.29\00:12:11.79 He said... or He acted by touching the leper... 00:12:11.83\00:12:16.26 an act of acceptance and then He cleansed him. 00:12:16.30\00:12:20.74 This typifies what Jesus does in the sanctuary. 00:12:20.77\00:12:25.17 We come to Him just the way that we are. 00:12:25.21\00:12:28.44 We come to the brazen Altar... we accept Jesus as our Savior, 00:12:28.48\00:12:32.38 and then He brings us to the Laver to cleanse us. 00:12:32.41\00:12:36.82 There is nothing that you can do 00:12:36.85\00:12:39.55 that will make God love you less or more... 00:12:39.59\00:12:43.93 His love for you is not based on your condition... 00:12:43.96\00:12:47.30 not based on your actions or your performance... 00:12:47.33\00:12:51.47 God's love for you is there despite our uncleanness. 00:12:51.50\00:12:55.24 In other words, the washing is not a pre-requisite 00:12:55.27\00:12:58.97 of God's acceptance, 00:12:59.04\00:13:00.58 it comes after His acceptance. 00:13:00.64\00:13:03.65 Jesus loves to have us come to Him 00:13:03.68\00:13:05.85 just the way that we are. 00:13:05.88\00:13:08.22 Won't you accept Him today? 00:13:08.25\00:13:09.98 Won't you come into the sanctuary? 00:13:10.02\00:13:12.39 Won't you accept Him as your Savior? 00:13:12.42\00:13:14.72 Won't you be washed by His Spirit at the Laver? 00:13:14.79\00:13:18.19 Won't you accept Him as your Savior and Lord? 00:13:18.23\00:13:21.30 I want to invite you to join us the next time 00:13:21.33\00:13:24.37 as we continue in our study 00:13:24.43\00:13:26.77 of the sanctuary, salvation and our Savior. 00:13:26.80\00:13:30.87
