Welcome back... 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 before the break, we took a look at a sacrifice 00:00:02.73\00:00:05.17 in Leviticus chapter 1 00:00:05.20\00:00:06.84 and it was the sacrifice that was the burnt offering 00:00:06.87\00:00:11.07 in which the entire animal was burned on the altar 00:00:11.11\00:00:15.78 and we noted that this was a sweet aroma to the Lord. 00:00:15.84\00:00:19.55 As a matter of fact, there is another part in the Bible 00:00:19.61\00:00:23.28 that describes this same offering 00:00:23.35\00:00:25.79 in Leviticus chapter 1 verse 12 through 13, 00:00:25.82\00:00:28.36 "And he shall cut it in pieces with its head... its fat... 00:00:28.39\00:00:31.09 the priest shall lay them in order on the wood 00:00:31.13\00:00:34.20 that is on the fire upon the altar: 00:00:34.23\00:00:35.83 But he shall wash the entrails and the legs with water: 00:00:35.86\00:00:39.53 then the priest shall bring it and burn it on the altar: 00:00:39.57\00:00:43.24 it is a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, 00:00:43.27\00:00:47.88 a sweet aroma to the Lord. " 00:00:47.94\00:00:51.45 The different parts of the animal 00:00:51.51\00:00:53.31 were placed in order on the altar... 00:00:53.35\00:00:55.12 the head... the inward parts... 00:00:55.15\00:00:57.05 the legs and one scholar noted that these parts represent 00:00:57.09\00:01:01.89 the different parts of the human entity. 00:01:01.92\00:01:04.43 The head represents the mind and the intellect... 00:01:04.46\00:01:07.60 the inward represents the will and the emotions... 00:01:07.63\00:01:10.70 the legs indicate the walk... 00:01:10.73\00:01:12.87 which represents the conduct and the lifestyle. 00:01:12.90\00:01:16.14 In other words, the significance of this particular offering 00:01:16.17\00:01:21.11 was that the person bringing the animal 00:01:21.14\00:01:24.78 and placing the animal upon the altar... 00:01:24.81\00:01:28.38 and the entire animal... the head... the inward parts 00:01:28.42\00:01:32.49 and the legs were burned up upon the altar 00:01:32.55\00:01:35.42 which was a sweet aroma to the Lord 00:01:35.46\00:01:37.59 typified this idea 00:01:37.63\00:01:40.46 that the sinner was placing himself on the altar. 00:01:40.50\00:01:44.93 It was a symbol of total surrender to God. 00:01:44.97\00:01:49.04 Not one part of the animal was left back 00:01:49.10\00:01:52.64 and it was the response of the individual 00:01:52.67\00:01:56.14 saying, "Lord, because of what you have done for me, 00:01:56.21\00:01:59.98 I will give you all of me. " 00:02:00.02\00:02:03.82 Now, in our human relationships 00:02:03.85\00:02:07.56 especially our most intimate human relationships 00:02:07.59\00:02:11.96 like marriage... 00:02:11.99\00:02:13.46 we go to weddings all the time 00:02:13.50\00:02:17.57 and I do not find individuals that are there 00:02:17.60\00:02:21.87 weeping and mourning because this is a terrible event 00:02:21.90\00:02:26.27 in which the husband and the wife 00:02:26.31\00:02:28.51 unreservedly give themselves 100% to the other person, 00:02:28.54\00:02:34.25 you don't see people say, "Oh, what a travesty... 00:02:34.28\00:02:37.22 this person is surrendering all to the other individual 00:02:37.25\00:02:40.52 for the rest of their life... " 00:02:40.56\00:02:42.19 radical thing... marriage is 00:02:42.22\00:02:43.83 because in saying, "Yes" to the person 00:02:43.86\00:02:46.39 you are saying "No" to everyone else, 00:02:46.43\00:02:48.93 you are giving all of yourself 00:02:48.96\00:02:50.47 and marriage in its most ideal form 00:02:50.53\00:02:53.97 is so beautiful 00:02:54.00\00:02:55.84 because you have the giving of all to each other. 00:02:55.90\00:02:59.57 The most intimate relationship this side of heaven 00:02:59.61\00:03:03.11 that we can have amongst ourselves is marriage 00:03:03.14\00:03:06.65 and why is that? 00:03:06.68\00:03:08.02 Because of total giving of yourself 00:03:08.05\00:03:10.82 to the other individual. 00:03:10.89\00:03:12.62 Oh, God is no different... 00:03:12.65\00:03:14.32 God wants to have a relationship with us 00:03:14.36\00:03:18.03 and this relationship... we cannot expect 00:03:18.06\00:03:21.66 to be any less than our human relationships 00:03:21.70\00:03:25.27 ideally speaking in terms of marriage. 00:03:25.30\00:03:28.74 When we think of our relationship with God, 00:03:28.77\00:03:31.07 God says, "Look, I give you all... " 00:03:31.14\00:03:33.58 and the freewill response of the individual 00:03:33.61\00:03:36.48 is to give all in return to God 00:03:36.51\00:03:40.12 because of the love of God that has touched our hearts. 00:03:40.15\00:03:43.12 This is what motivates the individual. 00:03:43.15\00:03:45.55 Now, the important thing about this offering 00:03:45.59\00:03:48.22 was that it was not mandatory, 00:03:48.26\00:03:50.39 in other words, it was voluntary. 00:03:50.43\00:03:52.53 The person was not forced to bring this animal 00:03:52.56\00:03:55.60 and bring it before the Lord, 00:03:55.63\00:03:56.97 the person came 00:03:57.00\00:03:58.33 because their hearts were overflowing with love 00:03:58.37\00:04:01.47 which means that every sacrifice we give to God, 00:04:01.50\00:04:04.64 really comes from this motivation of saying, 00:04:04.67\00:04:07.71 "Lord, I surrender all to you because I've been touched 00:04:07.74\00:04:11.45 by the love of God. " 00:04:11.48\00:04:12.81 The is from the book, "The Sanctuary Service" page 90, 00:04:12.85\00:04:16.08 "The offeror placed himself symbolically on the altar, 00:04:16.12\00:04:19.35 his entire life wholly devoted to God. " 00:04:19.39\00:04:23.02 Sanctuary Service, page 90, 00:04:23.06\00:04:24.66 And he was saying, "All that I am is Christ. " 00:04:24.69\00:04:29.13 Romans chapter 12 verse 1 says, 00:04:29.16\00:04:31.60 "I beseech you, therefore, brethren, 00:04:31.63\00:04:34.54 by the mercies of God, 00:04:34.57\00:04:36.64 that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, 00:04:36.67\00:04:40.74 holy, acceptable to God, 00:04:40.78\00:04:43.21 which is your reasonable service. " 00:04:43.24\00:04:46.21 So, this idea or this notion of giving ourselves to God 00:04:46.25\00:04:50.92 as a sacrifice typified in the burnt offering 00:04:50.99\00:04:53.76 is not just a New Testament motif... 00:04:53.79\00:04:56.12 it's actually... or I should say, 00:04:56.16\00:04:58.19 it's not an Old Testament motif, 00:04:58.23\00:05:00.60 it is a New Testament idea as well 00:05:00.63\00:05:02.93 because Paul here says that in response to the love of God, 00:05:02.96\00:05:07.30 we give our bodies... 00:05:07.34\00:05:09.67 and notice what he says, "As a living sacrifice. " 00:05:09.70\00:05:14.01 Notice the word on the screen, it says, 00:05:14.04\00:05:17.18 "I beseech you, therefore... " 00:05:17.21\00:05:19.18 up to this point, Paul has been elaborating 00:05:19.21\00:05:22.88 and establishing the grace and the mercies of God 00:05:22.98\00:05:27.46 That's why he says, "Therefore... " 00:05:27.49\00:05:29.29 now whenever you see the word, "Therefore" 00:05:29.32\00:05:30.96 they say, "Ask what it's there for... " 00:05:30.99\00:05:32.56 in other words, it's a concluding statement. 00:05:32.59\00:05:34.33 You have, "premise... premise... premise... therefore... " 00:05:34.36\00:05:37.20 so in chapters preceding this chapter... chapter 12, 00:05:37.27\00:05:41.20 Paul has spent an exorbitant amount of time 00:05:41.24\00:05:44.94 talking about the mercies of God... 00:05:44.97\00:05:47.44 the love of God... 00:05:47.48\00:05:48.81 the grace of God... 00:05:48.84\00:05:50.18 and then he says, 00:05:50.21\00:05:51.55 "In light of all the mercies of God, 00:05:51.58\00:05:54.38 I want you to present your bodies a living sacrifice. " 00:05:54.42\00:05:58.65 In other words, when you're touched by the love of God... 00:05:58.69\00:06:02.89 when you're just filled with that heartfelt response 00:06:02.92\00:06:08.76 to what He has done for you, 00:06:08.80\00:06:10.33 you say, "Lord, I give myself as a living sacrifice. " 00:06:10.37\00:06:14.70 This is what's typified in the Altar of Burnt Offering 00:06:14.74\00:06:18.51 or the Burnt Offering Sacrifice on the brazen altar 00:06:18.54\00:06:21.54 and notice what Paul says at the end of this verse, 00:06:21.58\00:06:24.51 "You present yourselves a living sacrifice, 00:06:24.58\00:06:27.45 holy acceptable to God... " 00:06:27.52\00:06:29.62 and in the last part he says, "which is reasonable. " 00:06:29.68\00:06:34.22 In other words, this is not unreasonable, 00:06:34.26\00:06:36.73 this is not something that is incomprehensible, 00:06:36.76\00:06:40.13 this is not something that's irrational, 00:06:40.16\00:06:42.26 Paul says, "In light of everything 00:06:42.30\00:06:44.43 that God has done for you, 00:06:44.47\00:06:45.90 when you give yourself back to Him 00:06:45.93\00:06:48.47 and say, "Lord, all that I am... all that I have is Christ... " 00:06:48.50\00:06:52.37 Paul says, "Look, this is reasonable... 00:06:52.44\00:06:55.41 this is rational... 00:06:55.44\00:06:56.95 this is something that makes sense 00:06:56.98\00:06:59.38 in light of everything that God has done for us. " 00:06:59.41\00:07:01.48 Now, in Leviticus chapter 2, 00:07:01.52\00:07:03.89 there's another sacrifice that the Bible mentions 00:07:03.92\00:07:06.59 and it is the meal or the food or the grain offering 00:07:06.62\00:07:09.26 and the Bible says, 00:07:09.29\00:07:10.63 "When anyone brings a grain offering to the Lord, 00:07:10.66\00:07:12.89 their offering is to be of the finest flour... 00:07:12.93\00:07:15.30 they are to pour olive oil on it, 00:07:15.33\00:07:17.83 put incense on it 00:07:17.87\00:07:19.20 and take it to Aaron's sons... the priests... 00:07:19.23\00:07:21.30 "The priest shall take a handful of flour and oil, 00:07:21.34\00:07:24.31 together with the incense... " 00:07:24.34\00:07:26.88 This was a meal offering 00:07:26.91\00:07:28.54 and they were to burn it as a portion 00:07:28.58\00:07:31.21 on the altar... 00:07:31.25\00:07:32.58 the food offering... an aroma pleasing to the Lord, 00:07:32.61\00:07:34.95 the rest of the grain offering belongs to Aaron and his sons. 00:07:34.98\00:07:38.72 It is a most holy part of the food offerings 00:07:38.75\00:07:42.12 presented to the Lord. 00:07:42.16\00:07:43.49 "By this burnt offering... " according to Leslie Hardinge 00:07:43.53\00:07:46.49 "the worshipper affirmed 'all that I am is Christ's' 00:07:46.53\00:07:50.67 and then on the basis of this dedication, 00:07:50.83\00:07:53.34 further declared through his meal offering 00:07:53.40\00:07:55.90 'all that I have is Christ's. '" 00:07:55.94\00:07:58.57 Now, the unique thing that connects 00:07:58.61\00:08:00.54 Leviticus chapter 1 and 2 00:08:00.58\00:08:02.61 is... chapter 1, you are placing yourself symbolically 00:08:02.64\00:08:06.82 on the altar. 00:08:06.85\00:08:08.18 In chapter 2, you are giving up your possessions... 00:08:08.22\00:08:12.52 or of your food and placing it on the altar. 00:08:12.55\00:08:15.02 Leviticus chapter 1 was saying, "All that I am is Christ's... " 00:08:15.06\00:08:20.06 and Leviticus chapter 2 was saying, 00:08:20.10\00:08:22.90 "All that I have is Christ's. " 00:08:22.96\00:08:25.83 This is an important distinction to make. 00:08:25.87\00:08:28.30 In other words, it's one thing to say, 00:08:28.34\00:08:30.71 "Lord, all that I am is Christ's 00:08:30.74\00:08:33.31 but you can't have anything that I have... " 00:08:33.34\00:08:35.14 no, the second part logically follows the first part. 00:08:35.18\00:08:39.45 In other words, if you accept Jesus as your Savior, 00:08:39.51\00:08:43.72 it indicates that all of your possessions 00:08:43.79\00:08:46.79 belong to Him as well. 00:08:46.82\00:08:49.06 Jesus is Savior and Lord of your life. 00:08:49.09\00:08:53.03 Matthew chapter 22 verse 37, you have this idea 00:08:53.06\00:08:57.67 of loving God with all your heart... 00:08:57.70\00:09:00.10 with all your soul... 00:09:00.14\00:09:02.27 and with all of your might. 00:09:02.30\00:09:05.44 This is reasonable... this is rational... 00:09:05.47\00:09:07.78 in our relationships with one another, 00:09:07.81\00:09:10.05 we expect... especially in the marriage relationship 00:09:10.08\00:09:13.35 even in the secular world, 00:09:13.42\00:09:14.75 we want the total heart of the other individual 00:09:14.78\00:09:19.39 in response to our love. 00:09:19.42\00:09:21.42 Jim Elliot, a missionary to South America, 00:09:21.46\00:09:24.56 who died as a martyr, notice what he said, 00:09:24.59\00:09:27.66 "Father, let me be weak 00:09:27.70\00:09:29.66 that I may lose my clutch on everything temporal. 00:09:29.70\00:09:33.40 My life, my reputation, my possessions, 00:09:33.44\00:09:37.07 Lord, let me loose the tension of the grasping hand. 00:09:37.11\00:09:40.94 How often I have released a grasp 00:09:40.98\00:09:43.55 only to retain what I prized 00:09:43.61\00:09:46.05 releasing all that I may be released... 00:09:46.08\00:09:48.62 so let me release my grasp. " 00:09:48.65\00:09:53.05 I found, in my Christian experience, 00:09:53.09\00:09:56.29 there are certain areas of my life 00:09:56.32\00:09:59.43 that I find a whole lot easier to let go of than others. 00:09:59.46\00:10:03.90 Do you find it the same way? 00:10:04.23\00:10:05.57 Do you find that there are areas of your life 00:10:05.60\00:10:07.14 that you're like, "Lord, you can have it all... " 00:10:07.17\00:10:08.94 and then other areas of your life, 00:10:08.97\00:10:10.34 you're like, "No Lord, I want to have a little bit more control 00:10:10.37\00:10:12.91 of this area of this life... " 00:10:12.94\00:10:14.28 and here, Jim Elliot, who died as a missionary 00:10:14.31\00:10:16.95 to South America says, 00:10:16.98\00:10:18.31 "Lord, let me loose my grasp on these things. " 00:10:18.35\00:10:22.08 Now, this is not to say that God is calling us to go out there 00:10:22.15\00:10:25.32 right now to sell everything that we have, 00:10:25.35\00:10:27.06 but what it is saying is to hold on to entities 00:10:27.09\00:10:31.29 whether they be physical or... or things in our own lives 00:10:31.33\00:10:34.23 hold on to them loosely... 00:10:34.26\00:10:37.07 so that if God ever calls us to surrender... 00:10:37.10\00:10:40.20 specially our possessions... 00:10:40.24\00:10:41.70 we can say, "Lord, whatever it is you want me to do, 00:10:41.74\00:10:45.04 I will do... " 00:10:45.07\00:10:46.41 and this is a prayer that we can pray. 00:10:46.44\00:10:48.48 Clifford Goldstein in his book, "Bestseller" 00:10:48.51\00:10:52.51 describes how his dream was to be a novelist. 00:10:52.55\00:10:56.48 He went to a Kibbutz in Israel 00:10:56.52\00:11:00.22 and dedicated his life to writing this novel 00:11:00.26\00:11:02.99 and this is what he said, 00:11:03.02\00:11:04.36 "One night, the Lord came to me and just said to me, 00:11:04.39\00:11:07.20 'You've been playing with Me long enough, 00:11:07.23\00:11:10.17 if you want Me tonight, burn the novel... ' 00:11:10.20\00:11:12.80 and in that instant the Lord showed me 00:11:12.83\00:11:15.40 that the novel was my God 00:11:15.44\00:11:16.81 and nothing else in the world meant more to me than that book. 00:11:16.84\00:11:20.41 That book was everything to me 00:11:20.44\00:11:22.31 but then, it's fascinating 00:11:22.34\00:11:25.35 because I had this back and forth 00:11:25.38\00:11:27.62 and then finally at one point, I surrendered... 00:11:27.65\00:11:30.89 I said, 'Okay God, I want You, 00:11:30.92\00:11:33.29 I want truth more than I want this novel... ' 00:11:33.32\00:11:36.52 and once I made that choice... 00:11:36.56\00:11:38.33 I made that surrender... 00:11:38.36\00:11:40.03 all the turmoil and all the struggle... 00:11:40.10\00:11:43.13 everything lifted. 00:11:43.16\00:11:45.07 I've never been sorry. 00:11:45.10\00:11:46.94 My life radically, radically changed 00:11:46.97\00:11:49.90 and that night I became a born again believer. " 00:11:49.94\00:11:55.51 Here Clifford Goldstein is... 00:11:55.54\00:11:57.38 he's struggling because he's holding on to this novel, 00:11:57.41\00:12:00.12 this novel was his life 00:12:00.18\00:12:01.82 and he said, "Lord, I want You more than I want this novel. " 00:12:01.88\00:12:06.79 There are times in our Christian experience 00:12:06.82\00:12:09.09 when we can come to God and kind of be fakey... 00:12:09.12\00:12:11.33 we say, "Lord, everything is fine, I'm not struggling... " 00:12:11.36\00:12:14.73 but the authentic communication that we can have with God 00:12:14.76\00:12:18.10 through prayer is saying, "Lord, I love this thing, 00:12:18.13\00:12:20.84 help me to hate it. " 00:12:20.87\00:12:22.74 You see, surrender is not something 00:12:22.77\00:12:25.44 that we have to fabricate, 00:12:25.47\00:12:26.81 surrender is not something that we have to 00:12:26.84\00:12:29.18 just get from our own bootstraps 00:12:29.21\00:12:31.78 or pull ourselves by our own bootstraps 00:12:31.81\00:12:33.82 and say, "Lord, I'm going to surrender to you 00:12:33.85\00:12:35.45 and just grit it out. " 00:12:35.48\00:12:36.82 No, the reality is that even surrender 00:12:36.85\00:12:39.65 is a God-given gift. 00:12:39.69\00:12:41.06 You can say, "Lord, help me to be willing to be made willing, 00:12:41.12\00:12:45.06 change my heart because I can't change myself. 00:12:45.09\00:12:48.03 I'm holding on to this idol in my life 00:12:48.06\00:12:51.07 help me to let go. " 00:12:51.10\00:12:54.20 Won't you surrender to Jesus today? 00:12:54.24\00:12:56.71 Won't you say to Him, "Lord, help me to be willing 00:12:56.74\00:13:00.48 to be made willing. " 00:13:00.51\00:13:02.08 Won't you say, "Lord, I love this thing... 00:13:02.11\00:13:04.81 change my desires... 00:13:04.85\00:13:06.85 help me to desire. " 00:13:06.92\00:13:08.82 God is willing and able to change your heart. 00:13:08.88\00:13:12.35 He's not asking you to fabricate surrender, 00:13:12.39\00:13:15.82 He's asking you to come to Him 00:13:15.86\00:13:17.89 just the way that you are 00:13:17.93\00:13:19.26 and ask Him for the gift of surrender. 00:13:19.29\00:13:22.43 Won't you surrender to Him today? 00:13:22.46\00:13:24.77 Join us again next time as we study 00:13:24.80\00:13:27.04 the sanctuary, salvation and our Savior. 00:13:27.07\00:13:30.57
