Music... 00:00:03.26\00:00:26.09 Welcome to the Series that we've entitled: 00:00:26.12\00:00:29.19 The Sanctuary, Salvation and our Savior. 00:00:29.22\00:00:32.23 My name is David Shin 00:00:32.26\00:00:33.60 and I'm honored to have you join us 00:00:33.63\00:00:35.50 as we journey through the sanctuary... 00:00:35.53\00:00:37.60 to discover the relevance to our practical Christian lives 00:00:37.63\00:00:41.30 as well as understanding the work and ministry 00:00:41.34\00:00:43.71 of Jesus Christ. 00:00:43.74\00:00:45.07 Today, I'd like to begin by talking about Jack Lalane... 00:00:45.14\00:00:49.58 Jack LaLane was a health enthusiast and a nutritionist 00:00:49.61\00:00:54.02 and these are some of the notable feats 00:00:54.05\00:00:56.92 that he was able to accomplish. 00:00:56.95\00:00:58.32 At the age of 42, he set the world record for pushups 00:00:58.35\00:01:03.02 by doing over 1,000 in 23 minutes. 00:01:03.06\00:01:08.60 At the age of 60, he swam from Alcatraz to Fisherman's wharf, 00:01:08.63\00:01:14.54 a distance of 2.4 kilometers... 00:01:14.57\00:01:16.64 he wore handcuffs and also towed a 1,000-pound boat 00:01:16.67\00:01:22.04 but that was not all, 00:01:22.08\00:01:23.58 at the age of 70, he swam a 1.5-mile section 00:01:23.61\00:01:29.12 of Long Beach Harbor by towing 70 people 00:01:29.15\00:01:32.85 in 70 boats while handcuffed and shackled... 00:01:32.89\00:01:36.16 this was in celebration of his 70th birthday 00:01:36.19\00:01:39.93 and he towed these 70 individuals in 70 boats... 00:01:39.96\00:01:43.63 I can't imagine... and this is a photograph 00:01:43.67\00:01:46.30 of Jack LaLane when he was over 90, 00:01:46.33\00:01:50.27 I hope to look like that when I'm 70 or even 50... 00:01:50.31\00:01:53.27 there he is with his muscles and cut and so forth... 00:01:53.34\00:01:56.28 now, we marvel at individuals like Jack LaLane 00:01:56.31\00:02:00.75 because it seems like he defies the aging process 00:02:00.78\00:02:05.25 but there's something about aging and even death 00:02:05.32\00:02:09.76 that we can delay but we can never avoid 00:02:09.79\00:02:16.06 and this is a result of sin. 00:02:16.10\00:02:18.27 Sin has not only affected our characters and our morality, 00:02:18.30\00:02:23.54 but it's also affected our physical nature. 00:02:23.57\00:02:27.94 We were never meant to die, 00:02:27.98\00:02:29.88 we were never meant to age, 00:02:29.91\00:02:31.75 we were never meant to deteriorate 00:02:31.78\00:02:33.92 and Jack LaLane... 00:02:33.95\00:02:35.72 even though he was able to delay the aging process, 00:02:35.75\00:02:39.32 he was not able to avoid it. 00:02:39.35\00:02:41.92 Now, on the screen, I have this graph 00:02:41.96\00:02:45.86 that depicts the ages of individuals 00:02:45.89\00:02:49.53 in the book of Genesis, 00:02:49.56\00:02:50.90 have you ever read the... the chronology 00:02:50.93\00:02:53.07 or the... the lineage in the book of Genesis? 00:02:53.10\00:02:56.24 these individuals... their lives were not measured 00:02:56.27\00:02:59.87 in decades... but rather, it was measured in centuries. 00:02:59.91\00:03:05.38 When you look at the age of Adam, 00:03:05.41\00:03:08.98 he lived over 900 years of age... 00:03:09.05\00:03:12.62 930 to be exact... 00:03:12.65\00:03:14.39 Adam lived to that age. 00:03:14.42\00:03:16.16 Methuselah lived to the ripe old age... 00:03:16.19\00:03:19.39 the longest man that ever lived recorded in Scripture, 00:03:19.43\00:03:22.60 969 years of age... 00:03:22.63\00:03:26.97 this is a remarkable time period and then you have Noah there... 00:03:27.00\00:03:31.14 he lived 950 years of age. 00:03:31.17\00:03:34.91 The Bible indicates that Noah did not start having children 00:03:34.94\00:03:39.11 until the year 500... 00:03:39.18\00:03:41.42 until he was age 500... 00:03:41.45\00:03:43.22 this is remarkable... 00:03:43.25\00:03:44.95 imagine how much productivity you can have in your life 00:03:44.99\00:03:48.92 but when you look at the graph, 00:03:48.96\00:03:51.39 you can see that after the flood, 00:03:51.43\00:03:53.63 the timeline or the age of individuals 00:03:53.66\00:03:58.30 takes a precipitous decline. 00:03:58.33\00:04:01.50 For instance, you can see that Abraham lives 175 years of age. 00:04:01.54\00:04:07.08 Now, that's still a long time but compared to 969, 00:04:07.11\00:04:10.81 that is dramatically different 00:04:10.85\00:04:13.21 and then, you get down to Jacob who lives 147 00:04:13.25\00:04:17.02 and by the time you get to the time of David... 00:04:17.09\00:04:20.82 David died in his 70s. 00:04:20.86\00:04:22.92 Now, what happened? 00:04:22.96\00:04:24.93 you can see that the vital force of man after the fall 00:04:24.99\00:04:29.66 begins a decline and so, after Eden was lost, 00:04:29.73\00:04:35.00 there was not only a deterioration of our morality 00:04:35.04\00:04:38.94 and our spirituality and our mental capability, 00:04:38.97\00:04:42.78 there was also a deterioration of our physical nature. 00:04:42.81\00:04:46.61 sin had a dramatic affect on creation as well. 00:04:46.65\00:04:51.15 Our earth... our planet... 00:04:51.19\00:04:53.15 it is not the way that God created it, 00:04:53.19\00:04:55.32 even the way that animals relate to each other 00:04:55.36\00:04:57.86 has been dramatically shifted and changed. 00:04:57.89\00:05:00.70 When we look at the plan of salvation, 00:05:00.73\00:05:04.17 through the lens of the sanctuary... 00:05:04.20\00:05:06.07 through this framework, 00:05:06.10\00:05:07.57 we can see that God wants to bring us back to Eden. 00:05:07.60\00:05:11.77 Eden was lost and God wants to restore Eden 00:05:11.84\00:05:15.84 and this is where Adam and Eve were in Edenic perfection. 00:05:15.88\00:05:19.35 In the Most-Holy-Place experience, 00:05:19.38\00:05:21.52 face-to-face communion with God that was lost 00:05:21.55\00:05:24.45 and through the sanctuary 00:05:24.52\00:05:26.59 we are shown how God wants to bring us back... 00:05:26.62\00:05:29.36 He wants to bring us back into the Courtyard 00:05:29.39\00:05:32.06 that is where we experience pardon and justification... 00:05:32.09\00:05:36.30 He brings us into the Holy Place... 00:05:36.33\00:05:39.03 that is where we experience power and sanctification 00:05:39.07\00:05:43.17 and then He brings us into the last phase... 00:05:43.20\00:05:46.44 the Most-Holy-Place experience, 00:05:46.47\00:05:48.11 and that is where we experience glorification. 00:05:48.14\00:05:52.01 In other words, in the last phase 00:05:52.05\00:05:54.72 where God brings us from the Courtyard into the Holy Place... 00:05:54.78\00:05:58.49 into the Most Holy place, 00:05:58.52\00:05:59.99 He will restore us back to the nature of Adam before the fall. 00:06:00.02\00:06:07.86 Not only in terms of our physical nature, 00:06:07.90\00:06:12.20 but in terms of the environment as well. 00:06:12.23\00:06:16.37 Adam and Eve lived in a perfect environment 00:06:16.40\00:06:20.48 and God in glorification would restore that back. 00:06:20.51\00:06:24.85 So, here we have the summary, 00:06:24.88\00:06:26.75 the Court is where we experience justification, 00:06:26.78\00:06:29.88 the removal of sin's penalty. 00:06:29.92\00:06:31.99 The Holy Place is where we experience sanctification... 00:06:32.02\00:06:35.52 the removal of sin's power 00:06:35.56\00:06:37.53 and in the Most Holy Place, 00:06:37.56\00:06:39.43 that's where we experience glorification 00:06:39.46\00:06:41.76 which will be the subject of our topic today 00:06:41.80\00:06:45.03 and that is the removal of sin's presence. 00:06:45.07\00:06:48.27 So, you can see in the sanctuary, 00:06:48.30\00:06:50.24 even as we see three distinct compartments... 00:06:50.27\00:06:53.48 the Courtyard... the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place, 00:06:53.51\00:06:55.68 God has three stages of bringing us back. 00:06:55.71\00:06:58.91 Justification... sanctification and glorification. 00:06:58.95\00:07:03.79 In Romans chapter 8 verse 30, the Bible says, 00:07:03.82\00:07:07.66 "And those whom He predestined, He also called; 00:07:07.72\00:07:12.29 and those whom He called, He also justified; 00:07:12.33\00:07:17.17 and those whom He justified, He also glorified. " 00:07:17.20\00:07:22.04 Now, the interesting thing about this text 00:07:22.07\00:07:24.94 is that Paul here omits "sanctification. " 00:07:24.97\00:07:27.81 He includes "justification" 00:07:27.84\00:07:30.28 and then mentions "glorification" 00:07:30.35\00:07:33.11 and people are like, "Hey, where is sanctification in this mix? 00:07:33.15\00:07:36.08 Is Paul not believing in sanctification? 00:07:36.15\00:07:38.12 You can see in other parts of his gospels 00:07:38.15\00:07:40.12 or in his epistles, I should say, 00:07:40.16\00:07:42.02 where he mentions "sanctification" 00:07:42.06\00:07:43.83 so, Paul was a believer in sanctification 00:07:43.89\00:07:46.29 and theologians believe 00:07:46.36\00:07:47.96 that the reason why Paul transitioned from justification 00:07:48.00\00:07:51.43 to sanctification 00:07:51.47\00:07:52.83 is because sanctification actually begins 00:07:52.87\00:07:56.37 the glorification process. 00:07:56.40\00:07:59.07 In other words, 00:07:59.11\00:08:00.44 the transformation of our characters 00:08:00.48\00:08:03.08 to becoming more and more like Jesus 00:08:03.11\00:08:06.31 is a part of the glorification process 00:08:06.35\00:08:09.52 that God has in store for us. 00:08:09.55\00:08:11.22 The book "Education" says on page 15, 00:08:11.25\00:08:13.66 "To restore in man the image of his Maker, 00:08:13.69\00:08:17.33 to bring him back to the perfection 00:08:17.36\00:08:19.86 in which he was created. 00:08:19.89\00:08:21.23 To promote the development of body, mind, and soul, 00:08:21.26\00:08:24.10 that the divine purpose in His creation 00:08:24.13\00:08:26.43 might be realized... 00:08:26.47\00:08:27.87 this was to be the work of redemption. " 00:08:27.90\00:08:31.17 In other words, God wants to bring us all the way back 00:08:31.21\00:08:35.84 and this process of restoration would actually be incomplete 00:08:35.88\00:08:40.15 if God pardoned and gave us power 00:08:40.22\00:08:43.75 but He left us with our physical natures. 00:08:43.79\00:08:47.42 Can you imagine? 00:08:47.46\00:08:48.79 God says, "I pardon you... I give you power... 00:08:48.82\00:08:50.96 but I can't glorify you... I can't give you new bodies... 00:08:50.99\00:08:54.73 I can't restore the earth... 00:08:54.76\00:08:56.26 I can't create a new heavens and a new earth... " 00:08:56.30\00:08:58.33 no, no, no, God says, "Look, I'm going to complete 00:08:58.37\00:09:00.40 the process... 00:09:00.44\00:09:01.77 I'm going to bring you all the way back 00:09:01.80\00:09:04.84 to where Adam and Eve were before the fall... " 00:09:04.87\00:09:08.58 and it begins with our character transformation 00:09:08.61\00:09:12.28 here and now. 00:09:12.31\00:09:13.92 Glorification is an important final phase 00:09:13.95\00:09:18.35 of the process where God will bring us back. 00:09:18.39\00:09:22.79 I'm looking forward to that day. 00:09:22.82\00:09:24.73 I am tired of back aches... I'm tired of the flu... 00:09:24.76\00:09:28.83 I'm tired of people getting cancer and dying... 00:09:28.86\00:09:32.90 all of these things are a result of sin. 00:09:32.93\00:09:35.74 Aging... baldness... wrinkles... all of these things 00:09:35.77\00:09:39.87 came as a result of sin... 00:09:39.91\00:09:41.48 God never meant us to age, 00:09:41.51\00:09:43.28 God never meant us to die 00:09:43.31\00:09:45.01 but as soon as Adam and Eve ate of that forbidden fruit, 00:09:45.05\00:09:48.92 there was a change in human nature. 00:09:48.98\00:09:52.05 Our physical nature... 00:09:52.09\00:09:53.89 Adam and Eve began to die. 00:09:53.92\00:09:55.66 The planet began to wax old like a garment as the Bible says 00:09:55.69\00:10:00.40 and God's plan of salvation is to bring us back. 00:10:00.43\00:10:04.40 The first point of glorification is... 00:10:04.43\00:10:07.44 glorification is spiritual restoration... 00:10:07.47\00:10:10.37 glorification is a process that begins 00:10:10.41\00:10:13.44 with our character transformation now. 00:10:13.48\00:10:16.08 In other words, glorification is not just 00:10:16.11\00:10:18.68 "Pie in the sky by and by" 00:10:18.71\00:10:20.22 where I say, "Oh, at the second coming of Jesus... 00:10:20.25\00:10:22.32 there I will be glorified... " 00:10:22.35\00:10:24.05 but according to Scripture, 00:10:24.09\00:10:25.69 the glorification of our spiritual nature... 00:10:25.72\00:10:29.26 our character actually begins the moment that you accept Jesus 00:10:29.29\00:10:34.10 as Savior and Lord 00:10:34.13\00:10:35.66 and God says, "Look, I want to begin 00:10:35.70\00:10:37.87 this process of sanctification, glorification of your character" 00:10:37.90\00:10:42.90 how do we know this? 00:10:42.94\00:10:44.27 In 2nd Corinthians chapter 3 verse 18, the Bible says, 00:10:44.31\00:10:48.04 "But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror 00:10:48.11\00:10:52.01 the glory of the Lord, are being transformed 00:10:52.05\00:10:56.12 into the same image from glory to glory, 00:10:56.15\00:10:59.85 just as by the Spirit of the Lord. " 00:10:59.89\00:11:02.79 Notice the terminology that Paul uses 00:11:02.82\00:11:05.23 in 2nd Corinthians chapter 3 verse 18, 00:11:05.26\00:11:07.60 he says that you are going from glory to glory... 00:11:07.63\00:11:11.83 from character to character... 00:11:11.90\00:11:14.64 from transformation to transformation 00:11:14.67\00:11:17.71 and this is talking about our character. 00:11:17.74\00:11:20.71 You are being transformed into the same image 00:11:20.74\00:11:24.21 and this is where glorification ultimately begins. 00:11:24.25\00:11:28.45 In other words, 00:11:28.48\00:11:30.52 if our characters have become like Jesus 00:11:30.59\00:11:34.86 and we allow God to work His work in us 00:11:34.92\00:11:39.19 to make us more like Jesus, 00:11:39.23\00:11:40.96 we will be glorified at the second coming of Jesus. 00:11:41.00\00:11:45.50 Glorification is a surety if we allow Jesus to pardon us, 00:11:45.53\00:11:52.54 to give us power and to make us and mold us to become like Him. 00:11:52.57\00:11:57.01 Glorification actually begins right now. 00:11:57.05\00:12:01.38 As we go on, John Piper says, 00:12:01.42\00:12:04.35 "In Paul's mind the process called sanctification 00:12:04.39\00:12:06.15 in this life... 00:12:06.19\00:12:07.62 the process of transformation from one degree of holiness 00:12:07.66\00:12:11.09 to the next, 00:12:11.13\00:12:12.53 is the first stage of glorification. " 00:12:12.56\00:12:16.26 He echoes what Paul says there 00:12:16.30\00:12:18.97 where he transitions from justification 00:12:19.00\00:12:20.97 directly to glorification. 00:12:21.00\00:12:22.50 Sanctification begins the process of glorification 00:12:22.54\00:12:26.21 even now. 00:12:26.24\00:12:27.71 We come to our next point of restoration. 00:12:27.74\00:12:30.81 Glorification involves physical restoration... 00:12:30.85\00:12:34.78 glorification culminates with our physical transformation 00:12:34.82\00:12:38.59 at the second coming of Jesus. 00:12:38.62\00:12:41.06 Can you imagine what that's going to be like? 00:12:41.09\00:12:43.66 When Jesus comes the second time, the Bible says, 00:12:43.69\00:12:46.90 "The trumpet will sound and the dead will be raised 00:12:46.93\00:12:50.10 and in a moment... in a twinkling of an eye 00:12:50.13\00:12:53.64 we shall be changed. " 00:12:53.67\00:12:57.47 I'm looking forward to that day. 00:12:57.51\00:12:59.31 Can you imagine if we're laid to rest... 00:12:59.34\00:13:01.48 and we don't have the privilege of being translated 00:13:01.54\00:13:04.08 without seeing death and we're there 00:13:04.11\00:13:05.75 and we're raised in the resurrection 00:13:05.78\00:13:07.38 and then we look up 00:13:07.42\00:13:08.75 and suddenly we look at our hands 00:13:08.78\00:13:10.32 and we see new hands... 00:13:10.35\00:13:11.89 we are resurrected to immortal bodies... 00:13:11.92\00:13:16.09 and this is a part of glorification. 00:13:16.12\00:13:19.03 Glorification begins with the character 00:13:19.06\00:13:21.46 and if we allow Jesus to work in us, 00:13:21.50\00:13:23.83 He continues that process and at the second coming, 00:13:23.87\00:13:27.07 we will receive new bodies 00:13:27.14\00:13:30.34 because of the power and the majesty of Jesus Christ. 00:13:30.41\00:13:35.14 I want to be there at the second coming. 00:13:35.18\00:13:37.48 I want to be there when the clouds open 00:13:37.51\00:13:39.98 and Jesus comes again to glorify us. 00:13:40.02\00:13:41.98 We're going to take a short break 00:13:42.02\00:13:43.89 and when we come back, we will continue in our study 00:13:43.92\00:13:47.56 of glorification... 00:13:47.62\00:13:48.96 of how God brings us back to Eden restored... 00:13:48.99\00:13:52.46 the restoration of the image of God in us... 00:13:52.49\00:13:55.96 not only in spirit but in physicality. 00:13:56.00\00:13:59.27
