Welcome back... 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 before the Break, we made the observation 00:00:02.73\00:00:05.40 that justification is pardon from sin 00:00:05.43\00:00:09.47 and sanctification is power over sin. 00:00:09.50\00:00:13.48 Now, sometimes we get into this argument of either or... 00:00:13.51\00:00:17.45 justification or sanctification is a power or pardon... 00:00:17.48\00:00:21.35 but here's a case where it's not either/or 00:00:21.38\00:00:25.05 it's actually both/and... 00:00:25.09\00:00:26.99 just like we use the analogy, 00:00:27.02\00:00:28.86 "Is it more important to be born or to grow?" 00:00:28.89\00:00:31.49 It's actually both... 00:00:31.53\00:00:33.23 now, I want to use this illustration 00:00:33.26\00:00:35.76 from planetary motion. 00:00:35.80\00:00:37.73 In the year 1605, Johannes Kepler was studying 00:00:37.80\00:00:43.14 planetary motion 00:00:43.17\00:00:44.74 and he noticed that the planets were orbiting the sun 00:00:44.77\00:00:49.04 not in a perfect circle 00:00:49.08\00:00:52.25 but it was actually what we would call an ellipse. 00:00:52.28\00:00:55.78 Johannes Kepler was studying planetary motion 00:00:55.82\00:00:59.02 and the numbers did not add up 00:00:59.05\00:01:01.59 and prior to that, everyone assumed 00:01:01.62\00:01:04.69 that the planetary motions were in a perfect circle, 00:01:04.73\00:01:08.23 but he came to the conclusion 00:01:08.26\00:01:10.40 that it was actually something that we call an ellipse. 00:01:10.43\00:01:13.84 Now, what is the difference between an ellipse and a circle? 00:01:13.87\00:01:18.37 Well, it's very simple actually when you look at it, 00:01:18.41\00:01:21.41 a circle centers on one central point 00:01:21.44\00:01:25.81 while an ellipse centers on two. 00:01:25.88\00:01:29.32 Now, I have on the screen an illustration of this 00:01:29.35\00:01:32.45 and you can have two central points 00:01:32.52\00:01:35.82 and draw a circle around it 00:01:35.86\00:01:38.49 and that is what an ellipse looks like, 00:01:38.53\00:01:40.80 and this is the way 00:01:40.83\00:01:42.16 that our planets actually stay in balance... 00:01:42.20\00:01:45.50 not centering on one central point 00:01:45.53\00:01:48.80 but actually centering on two. 00:01:48.84\00:01:51.47 Now, if this is the way our solar system stays in balance, 00:01:51.51\00:01:56.18 I believe that this is an analogous way 00:01:56.21\00:01:58.65 for us to understand 00:01:58.68\00:02:00.02 that this is a way of keeping our theology 00:02:00.05\00:02:02.78 in balance as well. 00:02:02.82\00:02:04.15 In other words, rather than focusing on one central point 00:02:04.19\00:02:08.29 like justification and pardon, 00:02:08.32\00:02:10.39 to the exclusion of power and sanctification, 00:02:10.43\00:02:14.66 we must look at these not as a circle as it were, 00:02:14.70\00:02:18.87 but rather, take an elliptical approach 00:02:18.90\00:02:22.24 saying that both are to be essential 00:02:22.27\00:02:25.54 to the Christian experience. 00:02:25.57\00:02:27.04 You get into problems when you start to say, 00:02:27.08\00:02:29.81 "It's justification to the negation of sanctification... " 00:02:29.84\00:02:33.68 and you also get into the problem 00:02:33.72\00:02:36.35 when you emphasize sanctification 00:02:36.38\00:02:38.99 to the negation... or to the neglect of justification. 00:02:39.02\00:02:42.89 You need both. 00:02:42.92\00:02:44.26 Now, there are certain tensions in Christian theology... 00:02:44.29\00:02:47.53 one of them has to do with Christology... 00:02:47.56\00:02:50.00 the study of Christ 00:02:50.03\00:02:51.37 and there's two tensions 00:02:51.40\00:02:53.07 that theologians have been haggling over 00:02:53.10\00:02:55.74 and arguing over for centuries, 00:02:55.77\00:02:58.24 going all the way back to the beginning of Christianity 00:02:58.27\00:03:00.48 in the first century... 00:03:00.51\00:03:02.04 and the idea that they battled over 00:03:02.11\00:03:05.21 was whether Jesus was human or divine 00:03:05.25\00:03:07.98 and they would go back and forth... 00:03:08.02\00:03:10.72 one group would come and say, 00:03:10.75\00:03:12.25 "Jesus is human but He was not divine. " 00:03:12.29\00:03:15.56 Another group would come and say, 00:03:15.59\00:03:17.43 "He was divine but He wasn't really human. " 00:03:17.46\00:03:21.30 Now, if you camp out in either one of these, 00:03:21.33\00:03:25.13 whether you say, "Jesus was human 00:03:25.17\00:03:26.74 to the neglect of His divinity" 00:03:26.77\00:03:28.27 or whether He was divine to the neglect of His humanity, 00:03:28.30\00:03:31.31 you have what you call heresy... 00:03:31.34\00:03:34.54 in other words, when you emphasize one central point 00:03:34.58\00:03:38.51 to the negation of the other one, 00:03:38.55\00:03:39.88 you have an imbalanced theological framework 00:03:39.91\00:03:43.39 and what I contend here is that the actual way of approaching 00:03:43.42\00:03:48.22 things like Christology, 00:03:48.26\00:03:49.76 where you look at the humanity and divinity of Jesus Christ, 00:03:49.82\00:03:52.93 it's not either/or 00:03:52.99\00:03:54.76 it's both/and 00:03:54.80\00:03:56.26 and there's a mystery in 00:03:56.30\00:03:58.53 the divinity and the humanity of Jesus Christ 00:03:58.57\00:04:00.97 that we need to be comfortable with, 00:04:01.00\00:04:02.60 and say, "Look, we won't understand 00:04:02.67\00:04:04.77 even when we get to heaven all the dynamics I believe 00:04:04.84\00:04:09.14 of the mystery of Godliness, of how God became a man... 00:04:09.18\00:04:13.35 and here is another tension in Scripture 00:04:13.38\00:04:16.45 that is brought up beautifully 00:04:16.48\00:04:17.85 in the Courtyard and the Holy Place 00:04:17.89\00:04:19.62 it's not justification or sanctification... 00:04:19.65\00:04:23.02 in actuality it is both 00:04:23.09\00:04:25.76 We need to take an elliptical approach to the gospel 00:04:25.79\00:04:29.90 and this keeps us centered and balanced in our theology. 00:04:29.93\00:04:34.00 Here's a quotation from "Steps to Christ" page 63, 00:04:34.04\00:04:37.07 "Our only ground of hope is in the righteousness of Christ 00:04:37.11\00:04:42.88 imputed to us, 00:04:42.91\00:04:45.05 and in that wrought by His Spirit 00:04:45.08\00:04:47.92 working in and through us. " 00:04:47.95\00:04:50.75 Now, what is she talking about here? 00:04:50.79\00:04:52.49 The righteousness of Christ imputed to us is justification. 00:04:52.52\00:04:57.23 That is our "Born Again" experience. 00:04:57.26\00:04:59.66 The righteousness of Christ, working by His Spirit 00:04:59.69\00:05:03.50 in and through us 00:05:03.53\00:05:05.53 is actually sanctification. 00:05:05.57\00:05:07.70 That is Christian growth 00:05:07.74\00:05:09.87 and notice, she brings so beautifully these two together, 00:05:09.90\00:05:13.74 by-the-way, if there's a book that you should read 00:05:13.78\00:05:16.85 and I do... every single year, 00:05:16.91\00:05:18.41 it is the book, "Steps to Christ" 00:05:18.45\00:05:19.91 because it brings out the beauties of the gospel 00:05:19.95\00:05:23.22 in very plain, simple language that we can understand. 00:05:23.25\00:05:28.06 So we come into the Courtyard, we are born again... 00:05:28.09\00:05:32.19 we are justified... 00:05:32.23\00:05:34.56 and then God brings us into the Holy Place 00:05:34.60\00:05:38.47 into a growing relationship with Him 00:05:38.50\00:05:41.40 and as we noted earlier, it's not about how far you get, 00:05:41.47\00:05:45.97 it's about being in the process 00:05:46.01\00:05:48.88 and you come to that first article of furniture... 00:05:48.91\00:05:52.15 you receive the assurance of salvation... 00:05:52.18\00:05:54.35 and then God says, I want you to walk with me... 00:05:54.38\00:05:57.02 I want you to grow with me... 00:05:57.05\00:05:58.65 I want you to go through a process of sanctification 00:05:58.69\00:06:01.69 this process which is of a lifetime 00:06:01.72\00:06:06.16 to grow up in Christ as a Christian. 00:06:06.19\00:06:08.73 Proverbs chapter 4 verse 18 says, 00:06:08.76\00:06:11.23 "The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, 00:06:11.27\00:06:15.60 shining ever brighter till the full light of day. " 00:06:15.64\00:06:19.97 Here, in Proverbs, the Bible brings out 00:06:20.01\00:06:23.24 that the Christian experience is like the sun... 00:06:23.28\00:06:26.92 the sunrise. 00:06:26.95\00:06:28.35 Now, when the sun comes up, 00:06:28.38\00:06:30.59 it doesn't immediately go to the height of noon, 00:06:30.62\00:06:33.62 it is gradual... 00:06:33.66\00:06:35.62 there is a process... 00:06:35.66\00:06:37.16 this has implications for a Christian experience, 00:06:37.19\00:06:40.33 in other words, when you become a Christian, 00:06:40.36\00:06:43.47 you are born again 00:06:43.50\00:06:46.07 and there is this process of growth 00:06:46.13\00:06:49.34 and it is a process... 00:06:49.37\00:06:51.47 just as though a baby's born into the world, 00:06:51.51\00:06:53.84 he doesn't learn how to walk immediately, 00:06:53.88\00:06:56.14 he doesn't learn how to talk immediately, 00:06:56.18\00:06:58.41 it is a growth path of maturity 00:06:58.45\00:07:01.65 and just as you watch... 00:07:01.68\00:07:03.59 or you can't watch grass grow... 00:07:03.62\00:07:06.25 it's a painful process... not a good investment of your time, 00:07:06.29\00:07:09.16 many times, our own growth is imperceptible. 00:07:09.22\00:07:13.70 We don't even know that we are growing 00:07:13.76\00:07:15.96 but we're growing in grace 00:07:16.00\00:07:17.33 and in knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 00:07:17.37\00:07:19.90 So, as you are born again, 00:07:19.93\00:07:22.27 many times, there will be this unconscious... 00:07:22.30\00:07:25.61 you're not even aware that you're changing... 00:07:25.64\00:07:28.84 but as you look back on your Christian experience, 00:07:28.91\00:07:31.28 you will notice that there has been growth... 00:07:31.31\00:07:34.05 there has been development... 00:07:34.08\00:07:35.55 there has been this trajectory of movement. 00:07:35.58\00:07:38.55 Now, I have this graph here on the screen 00:07:38.59\00:07:41.49 to illustrate justification and sanctification 00:07:41.52\00:07:44.73 and notice that birth is a point, 00:07:44.76\00:07:47.80 just like when you're born into this world, 00:07:47.83\00:07:49.70 there is a birth day... 00:07:49.73\00:07:51.37 there's a point in which your life began. 00:07:51.40\00:07:53.87 That is justification in Christian birth. 00:07:53.94\00:07:57.04 After birth... there is Christian growth. 00:07:57.07\00:08:00.11 Now I have it in a trajectory headed toward a certain point, 00:08:00.14\00:08:05.11 but in reality, the Christian experience 00:08:05.15\00:08:07.78 can be kind of more like the New York Stock Exchange, 00:08:07.82\00:08:10.79 it kind of goes up and down, 00:08:10.82\00:08:13.05 but it's the trend of the life 00:08:13.09\00:08:15.22 that is the most important thing. 00:08:15.26\00:08:17.29 It's the trajectory... it's not the occasional misdeeds 00:08:17.33\00:08:22.03 it is the trend of the life. 00:08:22.06\00:08:25.00 Furthermore, you can never come to the place 00:08:25.03\00:08:28.17 in your Christian experience, 00:08:28.20\00:08:29.54 where you say, "Look, I've arrived, I'm perfect... " 00:08:29.57\00:08:33.41 quite the contrary... 00:08:33.44\00:08:35.14 if you think that you've arrived... 00:08:35.18\00:08:37.15 if you think that you're perfect... 00:08:37.18\00:08:39.08 if you think that you're all mature and full grown... 00:08:39.11\00:08:41.85 that actually shows you 00:08:41.88\00:08:43.35 that you're further back from the process 00:08:43.39\00:08:46.52 than you actually are, 00:08:46.55\00:08:47.89 because the closer you get to Christ, 00:08:47.92\00:08:50.33 the more sinful you will feel. 00:08:50.39\00:08:53.40 Now, this is not to say 00:08:53.43\00:08:54.76 that you'll dwell on your own sinfulness, 00:08:54.80\00:08:57.00 but the closer you come to Christ, 00:08:57.03\00:08:59.17 you will have a sense of your unworthiness 00:08:59.20\00:09:02.77 as you focus on Him, 00:09:02.80\00:09:04.44 so, you have Christian birth which is a point 00:09:04.47\00:09:07.38 you have Christian growth which is the work of a lifetime. 00:09:07.41\00:09:11.88 I believe that we will be continually growing 00:09:11.91\00:09:15.82 even in heaven. 00:09:15.85\00:09:17.19 Now, this is not to say that we'll be sinful in heaven, 00:09:17.22\00:09:19.52 but there will be development in heaven. 00:09:19.55\00:09:22.36 I believe that's what makes heaven fun. 00:09:22.39\00:09:25.03 You will always be growing, you will always be developing, 00:09:25.06\00:09:28.76 you will always be coming more and more like Jesus 00:09:28.80\00:09:32.43 in character because even as God is infinite, 00:09:32.47\00:09:35.70 you can never come to the place where you say 00:09:35.77\00:09:38.97 that you've arrived. 00:09:39.01\00:09:40.71 That was one of my favorite quotes from the book, 00:09:40.74\00:09:43.11 "Christ's Object Lessons" Page 65, 00:09:43.14\00:09:45.05 "At every stage of development our life may be perfect 00:09:45.08\00:09:48.98 yet if God's purpose for us is fulfilled, 00:09:49.02\00:09:52.62 there will be continual advancement. 00:09:52.65\00:09:56.93 Sanctification is the work of a lifetime. " 00:09:56.96\00:10:00.93 In other words, as long as you are alive, 00:10:00.96\00:10:04.10 as long as you are walking in Christ, 00:10:04.13\00:10:07.20 you will always be growing, 00:10:07.24\00:10:09.97 it doesn't matter if you've been a Christian for 50, 60, 70 years 00:10:10.01\00:10:13.51 you should still be growing in Christ. 00:10:13.58\00:10:17.31 In other words, you can never come to the place 00:10:17.35\00:10:20.82 in your Christian experience, 00:10:20.85\00:10:22.45 where you say, "I've arrived... 00:10:22.48\00:10:24.05 I'm there... I don't need to grow anymore" 00:10:24.09\00:10:26.99 quite the contrary... 00:10:27.02\00:10:28.62 you will always be growing in Christ 00:10:28.66\00:10:31.69 as long as you are alive. 00:10:31.73\00:10:33.06 "The closer you come to Jesus, 00:10:33.09\00:10:35.03 the more faulty you'll appear in your own eyes, 00:10:35.06\00:10:37.13 for your vision will be clear, 00:10:37.17\00:10:38.83 and your imperfections will be seen 00:10:38.90\00:10:41.47 in distinct contrast with His perfect character. 00:10:41.50\00:10:44.11 Be not discouraged, 00:10:44.14\00:10:46.11 this is an evidence that Satan's delusions 00:10:46.14\00:10:49.71 are losing their power. " 00:10:49.74\00:10:51.81 You can never come to the place where you say, 00:10:51.88\00:10:54.65 "Look, I am sinless... 00:10:54.68\00:10:56.08 I've grown so much that I don't need sanctification 00:10:56.12\00:11:00.69 and Christian growth anymore. " 00:11:00.72\00:11:02.06 Quite the contrary, the closer you come to Jesus, 00:11:02.09\00:11:06.19 the more keenly will you sense your unworthiness. 00:11:06.23\00:11:10.53 This is the paradox of how sanctification works 00:11:10.57\00:11:14.80 because even though you're becoming 00:11:14.84\00:11:16.97 more and more like Jesus in character, 00:11:17.01\00:11:19.21 in your own heart... in your own sense... 00:11:19.27\00:11:21.41 you recognize that it is not your righteousness 00:11:21.44\00:11:25.15 but it's the righteousness of Christ. 00:11:25.21\00:11:27.88 You see, the more you become like Jesus, 00:11:27.92\00:11:30.52 the less pride and sufficiency take up residence 00:11:30.55\00:11:35.32 in your own heart and in your own life. 00:11:35.36\00:11:37.83 When you look at the illustration 00:11:37.86\00:11:40.70 of how Jesus dealt with this woman caught in adultery, 00:11:40.73\00:11:44.83 can you imagine what that felt like 00:11:44.87\00:11:46.94 as these rough men took this woman 00:11:46.97\00:11:49.00 and dragged her before Jesus and set her before Jesus 00:11:49.04\00:11:53.27 and said, "What are you going to do with this woman?" 00:11:53.44\00:11:55.51 And Jesus looked at those men and said, 00:11:55.54\00:11:59.31 "He who has no sin among you, may he cast the first stone. " 00:11:59.35\00:12:02.88 And the Bible tells us that one by one 00:12:02.92\00:12:05.05 beginning with the oldest to the last... 00:12:05.09\00:12:07.19 they all departed from that place 00:12:07.22\00:12:09.06 and the Bible says... 00:12:09.09\00:12:10.43 it was just Jesus and that woman standing there. 00:12:10.46\00:12:14.46 Notice what Jesus said to that woman 00:12:14.50\00:12:16.90 that was caught in the very act of adultery 00:12:16.93\00:12:19.60 and here you see the beauty of the gospel in what He said, 00:12:19.63\00:12:22.97 He said, "Neither do I condemn you, 00:12:23.00\00:12:27.08 go and sin no more. " 00:12:27.11\00:12:30.38 Right there in that phrase, you have pardon... 00:12:30.41\00:12:33.95 "Neither do I condemn you" 00:12:34.02\00:12:35.68 and then you have power, "go and sin no more... " 00:12:35.72\00:12:40.29 and that is the exact way that Jesus relates to us. 00:12:40.32\00:12:44.83 Have you sinned? 00:12:44.86\00:12:46.23 I have... 00:12:46.26\00:12:47.93 I have things in my life that I'm not proud of 00:12:47.96\00:12:50.50 and I'm so thankful that I can come to Jesus 00:12:50.53\00:12:53.03 just the way that I am 00:12:53.07\00:12:54.90 and Jesus looks at me, just like He did with that woman 00:12:54.94\00:12:58.31 and says, "Neither do I condemn you, 00:12:58.37\00:13:02.21 "go and sin no more. " 00:13:02.24\00:13:05.71 The way that Jesus relates to this woman 00:13:05.75\00:13:08.38 is the way that Jesus relates with us. 00:13:08.42\00:13:11.02 Won't you come to Him today? 00:13:11.05\00:13:12.69 Won't you accept Him as Savior and Lord of your life? 00:13:12.72\00:13:16.36 Won't you accept the provision and the righteousness 00:13:16.39\00:13:20.00 that Jesus has provided for us? 00:13:20.03\00:13:21.76 I appeal to you to accept Him today. 00:13:21.80\00:13:24.50 Let us study again 00:13:24.53\00:13:25.93 as we look at the sanctuary, salvation and our Savior. 00:13:25.97\00:13:29.97
