Music... 00:00:01.36\00:00:25.85 Welcome to the Series that we've entitled: 00:00:26.62\00:00:29.39 The Sanctuary, Salvation and our Savior. 00:00:29.42\00:00:32.16 My name is David Shin 00:00:32.19\00:00:33.53 and I'm honored to have you join us in this study 00:00:33.56\00:00:36.90 as we re-discover the significance of the sanctuary 00:00:36.93\00:00:40.47 in understanding the work of Jesus Christ... 00:00:40.50\00:00:43.04 past, present and future. 00:00:43.10\00:00:46.04 Now, for today's presentation, 00:00:46.07\00:00:47.84 I want to read from 1st Peter chapter 2 verse 2, 00:00:47.91\00:00:51.61 the Bible says, 00:00:51.65\00:00:52.98 "Like newborn babies crave pure spiritual milk, 00:00:53.01\00:00:57.95 so that by it, you may grow up in your salvation. " 00:00:57.99\00:01:02.89 Here the apostle Peter is using the metaphor 00:01:02.92\00:01:07.33 of physical birth and growth to describe an analogous way 00:01:07.36\00:01:15.10 the way that we also are born spiritually and grow. 00:01:15.14\00:01:19.11 Notice that in this text, there are two distinct periods 00:01:19.14\00:01:23.55 that are there by implication, 00:01:23.58\00:01:25.68 there is Christian birth 00:01:25.71\00:01:27.62 and then there is Christian growth. 00:01:27.68\00:01:30.75 Now, in the physical world, 00:01:30.79\00:01:32.82 it's important to be born obviously 00:01:32.85\00:01:35.69 because if you're never born, you don't exist 00:01:35.72\00:01:37.76 but after you're born, 00:01:37.79\00:01:39.83 it's important to grow after birth. 00:01:39.86\00:01:43.43 Now, we have in my home... we just had... two years ago 00:01:43.47\00:01:48.20 a baby boy... he's two right now... 00:01:48.24\00:01:51.57 hard to believe 00:01:51.61\00:01:53.21 and all of the focus in the pregnancy and rightfully so, 00:01:53.27\00:01:58.11 was on his birth. 00:01:58.15\00:01:59.78 We went through classes, 00:01:59.81\00:02:01.72 we went and prepared our bag 00:02:01.75\00:02:04.99 there was so much of the emphasis on birth 00:02:05.05\00:02:07.76 and then when the birth of my son came, 00:02:07.79\00:02:10.46 there was this realization that came over my sleep-deprived 00:02:10.49\00:02:16.43 consciousness 00:02:16.46\00:02:17.80 that this baby needed continual daily care. 00:02:17.83\00:02:23.14 In other words, birth was one thing 00:02:23.17\00:02:26.31 but care and growth after birth was another thing 00:02:26.37\00:02:29.94 and we'd go to the Pediatrician on a regular basis 00:02:29.98\00:02:33.52 and they would weigh and measure the baby 00:02:33.58\00:02:35.45 because if the baby is not growing, 00:02:35.48\00:02:38.82 there is something wrong. 00:02:38.85\00:02:40.66 In an analogous way, the Christian experience 00:02:40.69\00:02:45.19 is about birth and growth as well 00:02:45.23\00:02:47.63 and I believe there are many Christians that have been born 00:02:47.66\00:02:50.83 but are no longer growing. 00:02:50.87\00:02:52.90 In other words, metaphorically speaking, 00:02:52.93\00:02:55.67 they're still in diapers. 00:02:55.70\00:02:57.54 They have not grown as a Christian 00:02:57.61\00:03:00.64 and so much of Christianity today is emphasized on the birth 00:03:00.68\00:03:04.51 and praise God for that 00:03:04.58\00:03:06.05 but the Bible points out that it's important to grow 00:03:06.08\00:03:09.98 after birth as well 00:03:10.02\00:03:12.25 as we're seen here in 1st Peter 2 verse 2 00:03:12.29\00:03:15.76 "That you may grow up in your salvation. " 00:03:15.79\00:03:19.19 Now, here is a model of the sanctuary 00:03:19.23\00:03:21.86 that we've been referencing, 00:03:21.90\00:03:23.23 this is a bird's eye view of Moses' sanctuary 00:03:23.26\00:03:26.57 and you come into the Courtyard 00:03:26.60\00:03:30.01 and that is where we are born again as a Christian. 00:03:30.04\00:03:35.44 You accept Jesus as your Savior, 00:03:35.48\00:03:37.75 He comes into your heart... 00:03:37.78\00:03:39.21 you come to the Laver where you are baptized 00:03:39.25\00:03:42.55 and then, after that, 00:03:42.58\00:03:44.99 God says, "I want you to walk with me into the Holy Place 00:03:45.02\00:03:49.82 where you can grow after you have been born. 00:03:49.86\00:03:53.73 You see, in the Courtyard, you are born as a Christian... 00:03:53.76\00:03:58.03 in the Holy Place, you grow as a Christian. 00:03:58.07\00:04:02.70 Now, I want to mention something very quickly here, 00:04:02.74\00:04:05.14 it's not about how far you get, 00:04:05.17\00:04:07.94 it's about being in the process. 00:04:07.98\00:04:10.71 Now, when you look at the thief on the cross, 00:04:10.75\00:04:12.95 the thief on the cross didn't get very far, 00:04:13.01\00:04:15.18 he wasn't even baptized... 00:04:15.22\00:04:16.55 he made it to the first article of furniture... 00:04:16.58\00:04:18.85 he accepted Jesus as His Savior 00:04:18.89\00:04:20.72 and he died a few hours later. 00:04:20.76\00:04:22.19 Now, I believe on the cross, 00:04:22.22\00:04:23.56 he was growing but he didn't get very far. 00:04:23.59\00:04:26.36 You see, it's not about the destination, 00:04:26.39\00:04:29.13 it's about being in the process, 00:04:29.16\00:04:32.43 however, as long as you are alive as a Christian, 00:04:32.47\00:04:37.54 you should be growing... you should be in the process... 00:04:37.57\00:04:41.44 so, in the Courtyard, you accept Jesus, 00:04:41.48\00:04:43.88 you are covered... you're cleansed... 00:04:43.91\00:04:46.25 you're born again and then you come to the Holy Place 00:04:46.28\00:04:50.25 and God says, "I want you to journey with me.. 00:04:50.29\00:04:52.22 I want you to grow with me... 00:04:52.25\00:04:54.09 I want you to be transformed in character with me... " 00:04:54.12\00:04:58.26 and this is where we experience something called 00:04:58.29\00:05:01.20 "Sanctification. " 00:05:01.23\00:05:02.63 Now, we use these terms, 00:05:02.66\00:05:04.00 "Sanctification and Justification" 00:05:04.03\00:05:06.94 but they're synonymous with Christian birth 00:05:06.97\00:05:10.54 and Christian growth. 00:05:10.57\00:05:12.31 Justification is like Christian birth. 00:05:12.34\00:05:15.94 Sanctification is like Christian growth. 00:05:15.98\00:05:19.48 Now, as we've noted, this is an important point to look at 00:05:19.51\00:05:25.32 when we look at the sanctuary, 00:05:25.35\00:05:26.69 remember God's intention in the sanctuary 00:05:26.72\00:05:28.32 is to bring us all the way back 00:05:28.36\00:05:30.09 and He does this in three distinct stages 00:05:30.13\00:05:32.83 and we're studying Stage Two today, 00:05:32.86\00:05:35.43 we are justified in the Courtyard, 00:05:35.46\00:05:38.00 we are covered 00:05:38.03\00:05:39.37 and then we are sanctified in the Holy Place, 00:05:39.40\00:05:43.14 this is where we experience Christian growth, 00:05:43.17\00:05:46.94 we are justified in the Courtyard... 00:05:46.98\00:05:49.64 we are born again... 00:05:49.71\00:05:51.15 we are sanctified in the Holy Place... 00:05:51.18\00:05:53.68 this is where God wants us to grow in grace 00:05:53.72\00:05:56.92 and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 00:05:56.95\00:06:01.32 So we come in... we accept Jesus... 00:06:01.36\00:06:03.59 we're baptized at the Laver 00:06:03.63\00:06:05.19 and there's three articles of furniture in the Holy Place, 00:06:05.23\00:06:08.63 the Table of Shewbread... 00:06:08.66\00:06:10.00 the Altar of Incense 00:06:10.03\00:06:11.37 and the Lampstand 00:06:11.40\00:06:12.73 typifying in our own Christian experience, 00:06:12.77\00:06:16.81 Bible Study, Ministry and Prayer as well. 00:06:16.84\00:06:21.04 These are important considerations 00:06:21.08\00:06:23.21 in our Christian experience to help us grow in grace... 00:06:23.24\00:06:26.31 in our knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 00:06:26.35\00:06:29.35 Now, here on the screen, 00:06:29.38\00:06:30.85 I have some synonyms for Justification and Sanctification 00:06:30.89\00:06:35.92 to help us to better understand 00:06:35.96\00:06:38.33 the distinction between these two. 00:06:38.36\00:06:40.63 So, I'm going to go through them here very quickly, 00:06:40.66\00:06:42.60 Justification is like birth... becoming alive, 00:06:42.63\00:06:47.10 Sanctification is like growth and thriving alive, 00:06:47.14\00:06:50.84 Justification... we accept Jesus as our Savior, 00:06:50.91\00:06:54.54 Sanctification... we accept Jesus as Lord, 00:06:54.61\00:06:58.35 Justification is God's declaration, 00:06:58.38\00:07:02.08 Sanctification is our transformation, 00:07:02.12\00:07:05.75 Justification is the reinstatement of status, 00:07:05.79\00:07:09.62 Sanctification is character transformation, 00:07:09.66\00:07:13.43 Justification is our title for heaven, 00:07:13.46\00:07:16.67 Sanctification is our fitness for heaven, 00:07:16.70\00:07:19.63 Justification is what God thinks of us, 00:07:19.67\00:07:22.90 Sanctification is what we think of God, 00:07:22.94\00:07:26.11 Justification is God's imputed righteousness, 00:07:26.14\00:07:30.81 Sanctification is God's imparted righteousness, 00:07:30.85\00:07:35.48 Justification is like getting married, 00:07:35.52\00:07:38.49 Sanctification is like staying married. 00:07:38.55\00:07:41.46 Justification is pardon, Sanctification is power, 00:07:41.49\00:07:46.33 Justification is the objective gospel... what God does for you, 00:07:46.36\00:07:51.93 Sanctification is the subjective gospel... what God does in us. 00:07:51.97\00:07:57.51 So, here are some other ways of understanding 00:07:57.54\00:08:00.94 God's plan of restoration, 00:08:00.98\00:08:02.68 Justification is the born-again experience, 00:08:02.71\00:08:05.51 and Sanctification is the growth experience after birth. 00:08:05.55\00:08:10.89 Now, which one is more important? 00:08:10.92\00:08:13.29 I would say, "Both. " 00:08:13.32\00:08:15.22 Many times in the Christian community, 00:08:15.29\00:08:17.63 we get into these either/or scenarios, 00:08:17.66\00:08:20.06 Is it Justification? Is it Sanctification? 00:08:20.10\00:08:22.46 Is it Law or Grace? 00:08:22.50\00:08:24.07 either/or... 00:08:24.10\00:08:25.43 but in the Hebrew mind, 00:08:25.47\00:08:27.34 they took a very holistic approach... 00:08:27.37\00:08:30.21 they said... it was not either/or 00:08:30.24\00:08:33.04 it's both/and... 00:08:33.07\00:08:34.58 and in this case, it's not justification 00:08:34.61\00:08:37.68 or sanctification, 00:08:37.71\00:08:39.58 it is justification and sanctification. 00:08:39.61\00:08:44.05 Now, some people want to give a discount on the sanctuary, 00:08:44.09\00:08:47.06 they want to dwell in one compartment of the sanctuary, 00:08:47.09\00:08:50.83 but, here we can see that God's plan is restorative... 00:08:50.86\00:08:54.53 he wants to bring us back. 00:08:54.56\00:08:56.53 Now, it's important to note 00:08:56.56\00:08:58.43 that justification precedes sanctification 00:08:58.47\00:09:01.84 in the same way that you're born and then you grow 00:09:01.87\00:09:05.57 so, this is important for us to recognize 00:09:05.61\00:09:08.34 that first we come into the Courtyard 00:09:08.41\00:09:11.11 and we experience justification, 00:09:11.15\00:09:13.31 then we experience sanctification as well. 00:09:13.35\00:09:16.72 Now, in 1st Corinthians chapter 6 verse 11, 00:09:16.75\00:09:20.36 the Bible says, "Some of you were washed, 00:09:20.42\00:09:23.99 you were sanctified, 00:09:24.03\00:09:26.49 you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. " 00:09:26.53\00:09:31.73 So, here we have Paul using justification and sanctification 00:09:31.77\00:09:36.94 in the same phrase. 00:09:36.97\00:09:39.77 They are both essential for our Christian experience. 00:09:39.81\00:09:43.24 Justification is pardon from sin, 00:09:43.28\00:09:47.12 and Sanctification is power over sin. 00:09:47.15\00:09:50.45 We need both in our Christian experience. 00:09:50.49\00:09:53.76 What if I told a drug addict that was hooked on Heroin 00:09:53.79\00:09:57.73 and I said, "Look, I have good news and bad news, 00:09:57.76\00:09:59.56 the good news is that you are pardoned, 00:09:59.59\00:10:03.06 all the record of your drug abuse is immediately erased... 00:10:03.10\00:10:07.57 Jesus has washed them away 00:10:07.60\00:10:09.24 and when Jesus looks at you, He no longer sees you... 00:10:09.27\00:10:11.97 He sees the righteous record of Jesus Christ. 00:10:12.01\00:10:14.28 But, I have bad news as well. 00:10:14.31\00:10:17.08 The bad news is, even though your record is cleansed, 00:10:17.11\00:10:21.38 that there is no power to cure you from your addiction. 00:10:21.42\00:10:25.65 In other words, it is an incomplete gospel, 00:10:25.69\00:10:29.42 this... this person is going to be a heroin addict 00:10:29.49\00:10:32.39 for the rest of his life. 00:10:32.46\00:10:33.80 Now, that is not a complete gospel 00:10:33.83\00:10:36.80 and I praise the Lord that in God's plan of salvation, 00:10:36.83\00:10:41.27 He not only cleanses us from the past record of sins, 00:10:41.30\00:10:45.51 but He also... in the present... 00:10:45.54\00:10:48.28 in our struggle with our addictions and our habits, 00:10:48.31\00:10:52.38 and our sinful tendencies, He also gives us power 00:10:52.41\00:10:56.42 to overcome those sins in your life, 00:10:56.45\00:10:59.55 now, if you areas in your life that you want forgiveness for, 00:10:59.59\00:11:03.53 absolutely. 00:11:03.56\00:11:04.99 Do you have areas in your life presently 00:11:05.03\00:11:07.76 that you not only want forgiveness for 00:11:07.80\00:11:10.47 but you want power to overcome those areas of your life. 00:11:10.50\00:11:16.10 Now, the good news of the gospel 00:11:16.14\00:11:18.47 is that not only does God forgive us, 00:11:18.54\00:11:22.94 He also provides power in the present... 00:11:22.98\00:11:26.88 the beauty of the gospel is that Jesus Christ 00:11:26.92\00:11:30.49 can give you the victory over your drug abuse. 00:11:30.52\00:11:34.06 The beauty of the gospel is that Jesus can give you the victory 00:11:34.09\00:11:40.50 over lying... cheating... and lustful thoughts... 00:11:40.53\00:11:44.70 every addiction... 00:11:44.73\00:11:46.90 every sin that are like chains that enslave us, 00:11:46.94\00:11:51.61 God can give us the victory. 00:11:51.64\00:11:54.34 Now, when I came to Jesus 00:11:54.38\00:11:57.01 and accepted Him as my personal Savior 00:11:57.05\00:11:59.21 and was baptized, 00:11:59.25\00:12:00.58 I came up out of the water 00:12:00.62\00:12:02.35 and I naturally assumed that the next day 00:12:02.38\00:12:06.12 I would not have to deal with those sinful tendencies 00:12:06.15\00:12:09.86 and those neuro pathways that I had been developing for years 00:12:09.89\00:12:13.03 after baptism 00:12:13.06\00:12:14.40 and I woke up the next day and I realized 00:12:14.43\00:12:17.63 that those inclinations and those tendencies 00:12:17.67\00:12:20.84 were still there... 00:12:20.87\00:12:22.70 in other words, baptism is not a Lobotomy. 00:12:22.77\00:12:26.74 A Lobotomy is where a part of your brain was removed... 00:12:26.78\00:12:29.98 God does not come down and erase those tendencies, 00:12:30.01\00:12:34.42 rather, He gives you power to develop new habits 00:12:34.45\00:12:39.25 and new tendencies 00:12:39.29\00:12:41.16 and there is grace and assurance through the journey. 00:12:41.19\00:12:45.83 This is the beauty of the gospel. 00:12:45.86\00:12:47.90 You have the assurance of salvation, 00:12:47.93\00:12:49.90 Jesus said... come to Me just the way that I am 00:12:49.93\00:12:51.83 and you're saved in Him 00:12:51.87\00:12:53.64 and if you were to die today, you can have the assurance 00:12:53.67\00:12:56.47 of eternal life 00:12:56.50\00:12:57.84 and the gospel not only is pardoned, 00:12:57.87\00:13:01.54 but it's power for the present 00:13:01.58\00:13:03.55 and Jesus says, "Walk with me... 00:13:03.58\00:13:05.48 you may stumble and fall 00:13:05.51\00:13:06.85 but I'm right here to catch you if you do 00:13:06.88\00:13:09.28 and I'm going to give you the victory 00:13:09.32\00:13:11.89 to live a Christ centered and victorious life by His grace. " 00:13:11.92\00:13:17.86 We're going to take a short break right now 00:13:17.89\00:13:19.93 and when we come back, we will continue our study 00:13:20.00\00:13:23.03 of how Jesus helps us to be born 00:13:23.06\00:13:26.20 and also to grow up in Him. 00:13:26.23\00:13:29.30
