Welcome back... 00:00:01.36\00:00:02.70 before the break, we noted that in Scripture 00:00:02.73\00:00:05.10 the Bible points out that when Adam and Eve sinned, 00:00:05.13\00:00:08.27 they had an immediate sense of their nakedness. 00:00:08.30\00:00:11.21 What was their response? 00:00:11.24\00:00:12.91 They attempted to cover themselves in fig leaves 00:00:12.94\00:00:17.78 this sense of nakedness and shame was immediately there 00:00:17.81\00:00:21.15 and they went around and they found these fig leaves, 00:00:21.18\00:00:24.45 I don't know how they did it... it must have been very difficult 00:00:24.49\00:00:26.69 and they covered themselves 00:00:26.72\00:00:28.06 and God's response to their nakedness was immediate, 00:00:28.09\00:00:31.79 the Bible indicates that they were given these coats of skin 00:00:31.83\00:00:37.93 to cover their nakedness. 00:00:37.97\00:00:40.44 Now, any time you make coats of skin 00:00:40.47\00:00:43.71 this implies that there was an animal that had to die 00:00:43.74\00:00:48.74 in order for the skins to be provided. 00:00:48.78\00:00:52.18 So, God covers their nakedness but there's an implied sacrifice 00:00:52.21\00:00:58.95 right there at the beginning. 00:00:58.99\00:01:00.66 And scholars and theologians believe 00:01:00.69\00:01:03.63 that this is the first place that the sacrificial service 00:01:03.66\00:01:08.10 was instituted... 00:01:08.13\00:01:09.46 because the very coats of skin, 00:01:09.50\00:01:11.83 the very coverings that Adam and Eve wore out of the garden 00:01:11.87\00:01:16.14 were provided by the death of an animal 00:01:16.17\00:01:20.61 and I believe that it was a lamb 00:01:20.64\00:01:23.14 that was providing that covering 00:01:23.21\00:01:25.65 and that covering represented the robe of righteousness... 00:01:25.68\00:01:30.69 the robe of Christ's righteousness 00:01:30.72\00:01:33.79 that covers us and covers our shame. 00:01:33.82\00:01:36.56 Now, you'll notice what the Bible says 00:01:36.59\00:01:39.23 in Genesis chapter 3 verse 24, God placed on the east side 00:01:39.26\00:01:43.93 of the garden of Eden 00:01:43.97\00:01:45.67 cherubim's and a flaming sword flashing back and forth. 00:01:45.70\00:01:51.57 Notice that the Bible says 00:01:51.61\00:01:53.98 that as Adam and Eve were led outside of the Garden of Eden, 00:01:54.04\00:01:58.55 that the Garden of Eden... the gate 00:01:58.58\00:02:01.38 or the entrance to the Garden of Eden 00:02:01.42\00:02:04.22 was on the east side. 00:02:04.25\00:02:07.22 Now, you notice, in our bird's eye view of the Mosaic Sanctuary 00:02:07.26\00:02:10.99 that we've been referencing this entire time 00:02:11.03\00:02:13.06 that the east side is exactly 00:02:13.09\00:02:17.00 where the entrance to the sanctuary was, 00:02:17.07\00:02:19.53 and here you have the entrance to Eden 00:02:19.60\00:02:22.07 also being on the east side 00:02:22.10\00:02:24.11 and here you have other sanctuary imagery 00:02:24.14\00:02:26.34 that's coming in... 00:02:26.37\00:02:27.71 Cherubim... and the flaming sword flashing back and forth 00:02:27.74\00:02:31.65 and scholars have also noted that this flaming sword... 00:02:31.68\00:02:36.28 this glory is typified by the Shekinah Glory of God 00:02:36.32\00:02:40.86 typified also in the Ark of the Covenant 00:02:40.89\00:02:43.39 where you have cherubim covering and hovering 00:02:43.43\00:02:45.66 over the glory of God, 00:02:45.69\00:02:47.46 this is sanctuary language 00:02:47.50\00:02:49.20 and there are on the east side of the Garden, 00:02:49.23\00:02:52.53 is this gate that is there, 00:02:52.60\00:02:54.50 now, this is from the book, 00:02:54.54\00:02:56.40 "Patriarchs and Prophet" page 62, 00:02:56.44\00:02:58.74 "At the cherubim-guarded gate of Paradise 00:02:58.77\00:03:02.48 the divine glory was revealed. 00:03:02.51\00:03:04.65 Hither came Adam and his sons to worship God. 00:03:04.68\00:03:07.98 At the cherubim-guarded gate of Paradise 00:03:08.02\00:03:11.39 the glory of God was revealed 00:03:11.42\00:03:14.99 and hither came the first worshipers. " 00:03:15.02\00:03:19.29 When you read the Bible, 00:03:19.33\00:03:20.83 you can see that this was the place of worship 00:03:20.86\00:03:26.67 that is implied by Scripture. 00:03:26.74\00:03:28.37 Even when Cain and Abel came to offer their sacrifices, 00:03:28.40\00:03:31.67 according to Patriarchs and Prophets, 00:03:31.71\00:03:33.31 this was the place that Adam and Eve and his descendants 00:03:33.34\00:03:37.25 would come to worship God. 00:03:37.31\00:03:38.81 The entrance to the Garden of Eden. 00:03:38.85\00:03:42.25 Now, remember that we've noted that the sanctuary 00:03:42.28\00:03:46.42 is about how God wants to bring us back to Eden. 00:03:46.45\00:03:50.56 God wants to bring us all the way back into the Courtyard... 00:03:50.59\00:03:54.43 into the Holy Place... into the Most Holy Place... 00:03:54.46\00:03:57.53 and this was the place that the first worshipers 00:03:57.57\00:04:00.57 came to worship back after the fall. 00:04:00.64\00:04:04.71 Patriarchs and Prophets goes on, 00:04:04.74\00:04:06.81 "Here their altars were reared, and their offerings presented. 00:04:06.84\00:04:10.01 It was here that Cain and Abel had brought their sacrifices 00:04:10.05\00:04:13.18 and God had condescended to communicate with them. " 00:04:13.21\00:04:19.59 Patriarchs and Prophets here is using sanctuary language again 00:04:19.65\00:04:23.66 to describe the interaction of Adam and Eve and his descendants 00:04:23.73\00:04:27.70 before the flood, when the garden gate was still there. 00:04:27.73\00:04:30.87 Here is a picture of Cain and Abel worshipping 00:04:30.90\00:04:34.10 and worship is going to be a central issue again 00:04:34.14\00:04:37.27 in the end of time 00:04:37.31\00:04:38.64 and notice that Cain brought a lamb... 00:04:38.67\00:04:42.31 I should say Abel brought a lamb 00:04:42.34\00:04:44.58 while Cain brought fruit. 00:04:44.61\00:04:47.12 The sacrificial service did not originate with Moses. 00:04:47.15\00:04:52.12 It originated back in Eden... 00:04:52.15\00:04:54.62 all of these sacrificial services and the lamb dying 00:04:54.66\00:04:59.49 pointed forward to Jesus Christ. 00:04:59.53\00:05:02.03 Now, when Cain and Abel were worshiping there, 00:05:02.06\00:05:05.73 there was a conflict that arose, 00:05:05.80\00:05:08.10 there was true worship and there was also false worship. 00:05:08.14\00:05:12.14 True worshipers brought the lamb 00:05:12.17\00:05:14.84 and here Cain did not bring a lamb... 00:05:14.88\00:05:17.15 he brought his own offering to God 00:05:17.18\00:05:19.08 and there was a conflict that arose 00:05:19.11\00:05:20.98 and Cain killed Abel. 00:05:21.02\00:05:24.29 After Cain kills Abel, God comes down 00:05:24.32\00:05:27.99 to have a conversation with Cain 00:05:28.02\00:05:30.53 and notice what God says to Cain after he has killed Abel. 00:05:30.56\00:05:35.96 In Genesis chapter 4 verse 17, the Bible says, 00:05:36.00\00:05:39.63 "If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up 00:05:39.70\00:05:45.67 and if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. " 00:05:45.74\00:05:51.71 Now, when I first read this text, 00:05:51.75\00:05:54.98 I thought that sin metaphorically 00:05:55.02\00:05:58.19 was crouching at the door. 00:05:58.22\00:06:00.26 Ah... I could not understand how sin could crouch 00:06:00.29\00:06:04.56 but I thought maybe this was a metaphor. 00:06:04.59\00:06:07.30 Later on, Bible scholars have discovered 00:06:07.33\00:06:10.00 that this term "sin" can also be in the Hebrew 00:06:10.03\00:06:15.07 interpreted as sin offering 00:06:15.10\00:06:17.71 and I've come to the conclusion as has other Bible scholars 00:06:17.74\00:06:21.91 like Richard Davidson who is Old Testament Professor 00:06:21.94\00:06:24.48 at Andrews Theological Seminary, 00:06:24.51\00:06:26.35 has come to the conclusion 00:06:26.41\00:06:28.18 that this should actually be "sin offering. " 00:06:28.22\00:06:32.09 Now, let's read it again because it makes a lot more sense, 00:06:32.12\00:06:34.76 "If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up 00:06:34.79\00:06:37.39 and if you do not do well, 00:06:37.43\00:06:39.43 a sin offering is crouching at the door. " 00:06:39.46\00:06:44.67 Now, this is a quotation from Richard Davidson, 00:06:44.70\00:06:47.04 he says, "Recent studies of this verse, 00:06:47.07\00:06:49.77 provide evidence from the original Hebrew 00:06:49.80\00:06:52.47 that the word "Hatat" 00:06:52.51\00:06:54.18 which can either mean "sin" or "sin offering" 00:06:54.21\00:06:57.38 should better be translated as "sin offering" 00:06:57.41\00:07:00.55 and not "sin" in this verse 00:07:00.58\00:07:02.78 and the word "Pethach"... door opening. 00:07:02.82\00:07:06.49 Now, let's read the verse again... 00:07:06.52\00:07:08.39 before we do that, let's go back to this quote here 00:07:08.42\00:07:11.73 the reference to the cherubim door gate of Paradise 00:07:11.76\00:07:15.00 where sinful human beings were to bring their sacrifices 00:07:15.06\00:07:18.53 paralleling the numerous uses of Pethach 00:07:18.57\00:07:21.67 in the Torah over 40 times 00:07:21.70\00:07:24.17 describing the door of the tabernacle. 00:07:24.21\00:07:27.84 According to Bible scholars, 00:07:27.88\00:07:29.94 this reference... in Genesis chapter 4, 00:07:29.98\00:07:33.38 where it says a sin offering is crouching at the door... 00:07:33.42\00:07:38.12 what crouches? 00:07:38.15\00:07:39.89 It's an animal that crouches. 00:07:39.92\00:07:42.29 So, here God is saying that if you do not do well, 00:07:42.32\00:07:47.06 there is a sacrifice that is at the door. 00:07:47.10\00:07:51.50 In other words, God is being redemptive 00:07:51.53\00:07:55.87 in His approach to Cain. 00:07:55.90\00:07:58.97 "If you do not do well, there is a provision, 00:07:59.04\00:08:01.68 there is a sacrifice... there is a Savior... " 00:08:01.71\00:08:04.35 Genesis chapter 4 verse 7, 00:08:04.38\00:08:06.01 reading it again with the term "sin offering" 00:08:06.05\00:08:08.28 "If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? 00:08:08.35\00:08:12.35 and if you do not do well, 00:08:12.39\00:08:14.92 a sin offering is crouching at the door to Eden. " 00:08:14.96\00:08:20.50 The provision of salvation... 00:08:20.53\00:08:22.83 the provision of a sin offering was being offered to Cain 00:08:22.86\00:08:29.80 even though he had just killed Abel. 00:08:29.84\00:08:33.64 Now, let's go to the sanctuary model... 00:08:33.68\00:08:37.38 this is a bird's eye view of Moses' tabernacle 00:08:37.45\00:08:40.58 and you can see, as you come to the door 00:08:40.62\00:08:44.15 of the Altar of Burnt Offering, 00:08:44.19\00:08:46.42 that is where a sin offering was made. 00:08:46.45\00:08:50.56 In other words, not only is this a model 00:08:50.59\00:08:54.66 of the heavenly sanctuary, 00:08:54.70\00:08:56.10 but Bible scholars believe that Eden and the entrance to Eden 00:08:56.13\00:09:00.94 was the first sanctuary. 00:09:00.97\00:09:03.44 It was the place where they brought their offerings 00:09:03.47\00:09:06.11 and Cain was told, "A sin offering is there 00:09:06.14\00:09:10.41 at the door. " 00:09:10.45\00:09:12.21 In Isaiah chapter 61 verse 10, the Bible says, 00:09:12.25\00:09:15.98 "I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, 00:09:16.05\00:09:18.92 my soul shall be joyful in my God; 00:09:18.95\00:09:21.72 for He hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, 00:09:21.79\00:09:27.40 He has covered me with the robe of righteousness. " 00:09:27.43\00:09:33.03 We all need a covering. 00:09:33.07\00:09:34.80 We may not be physically naked like Adam and Eve, 00:09:34.84\00:09:39.21 but the Bible tells us in Revelation, 00:09:39.24\00:09:42.14 that all of us are spiritually naked. 00:09:42.21\00:09:45.05 We are in need of covering by Jesus Christ 00:09:45.08\00:09:49.28 and the first thing that God does, 00:09:49.32\00:09:51.89 is He covers us with His robe 00:09:51.92\00:09:54.62 just like Adam and Eve back in Edenic perfection 00:09:54.66\00:09:58.03 they noticed their nakedness, 00:09:58.06\00:09:59.93 they covered themselves with fig leaves 00:09:59.96\00:10:01.56 and God says, "No, that is not sufficient 00:10:01.60\00:10:03.13 and there has to be an animal that dies typifying Jesus Christ 00:10:03.16\00:10:07.60 in order to provide that covering. 00:10:07.64\00:10:10.31 Jesus covers us with His robe of righteousness. 00:10:10.34\00:10:15.08 Now, we are not to cover our own sins. 00:10:15.11\00:10:18.61 The Bible tells that he who covers his own sins 00:10:18.65\00:10:23.28 will not prosper... " 00:10:23.32\00:10:24.65 but God is the One Who only can cover 00:10:24.69\00:10:29.22 and when we come to Jesus, just the way that we are 00:10:29.26\00:10:33.19 we can receive that covering and that cleansing. 00:10:33.23\00:10:37.57 In the Courtyard we experience that justification. 00:10:37.60\00:10:41.90 Now, in the book of Matthew, there's a story 00:10:41.94\00:10:46.11 of Jesus coming down from the greatest sermon 00:10:46.17\00:10:50.28 that He ever preached 00:10:50.31\00:10:51.71 and as He comes down from the mountain, 00:10:51.75\00:10:53.35 the Bible tells us that a leper came out to meet Jesus. 00:10:53.42\00:10:58.25 Now, imagine this in your mind's eye, 00:10:58.29\00:11:00.42 a leper who has this contagious disease is coming to Jesus 00:11:00.46\00:11:04.89 and you can imagine as this crowd is following Jesus, 00:11:04.93\00:11:08.76 they part like the sea 00:11:08.80\00:11:11.13 and there, according to the gospel of Matthew, 00:11:11.17\00:11:13.57 there in front of Jesus, 00:11:13.60\00:11:16.00 is the leper and Jesus... 00:11:16.04\00:11:17.94 no one else is around... 00:11:17.97\00:11:19.81 and the man says, according to Matthew chapter 8, 00:11:19.87\00:11:22.78 "If you can... " 00:11:22.84\00:11:25.11 or "If Thou wilt... " 00:11:25.15\00:11:27.18 Thou canst make me clean. " 00:11:27.22\00:11:30.29 He's asking for cleansing. 00:11:30.32\00:11:33.25 What is Jesus going to do? 00:11:33.29\00:11:36.16 And notice according to the gospels, 00:11:36.19\00:11:38.69 the first thing that Jesus does 00:11:38.76\00:11:40.66 is, He reaches out His hand and touches him. 00:11:40.70\00:11:44.93 That touch meant a lot to that leper. 00:11:44.97\00:11:49.00 He probably had not been touched by a human being 00:11:49.04\00:11:52.67 that was clean... who knows how long 00:11:52.71\00:11:54.84 and Jesus reached out His hand and touched him. 00:11:54.88\00:11:57.15 In other words, Jesus did not say, 00:11:57.21\00:11:58.88 "Oh, you're clean... 00:11:58.91\00:12:00.42 and then I will touch you. " 00:12:00.45\00:12:03.35 Jesus said, "I will touch you... " 00:12:03.39\00:12:06.65 in other words, that implied acceptance. 00:12:06.69\00:12:09.59 That was a form of acceptance... a symbol of acceptance 00:12:09.62\00:12:14.06 just like Jesus covers us and then He cleanses us, 00:12:14.10\00:12:16.87 He doesn't cleanse us and then cover us, 00:12:16.90\00:12:18.73 He accepts us... 00:12:18.80\00:12:20.74 He covers us and then He cleanses... 00:12:20.77\00:12:23.04 and then the Bible says that Jesus said to the leper, 00:12:23.10\00:12:25.41 "I will... be thou clean. " 00:12:25.44\00:12:29.14 There's an important lesson for us 00:12:29.18\00:12:31.85 that Jesus loves to have us come to Him 00:12:31.88\00:12:36.35 just the way that we are. 00:12:36.38\00:12:38.99 He accepts us just the way that we are 00:12:39.05\00:12:43.29 but He loves us too much to leave us in that condition, 00:12:43.32\00:12:46.56 and sometimes we assume 00:12:46.59\00:12:47.93 that God is this vindictive individual 00:12:47.96\00:12:49.66 that says, "Look, I'm going to accept you after I cleanse you" 00:12:49.70\00:12:53.13 but here we see the way that Jesus relates to the leper, 00:12:53.17\00:12:56.37 is the same way that Jesus relates to you and I. 00:12:56.40\00:13:00.44 Won't you come to Him today just like that leper? 00:13:00.48\00:13:04.45 Won't you come to Him and say, 00:13:04.48\00:13:06.01 "Lord, make me clean... " 00:13:06.05\00:13:08.48 and Jesus will encircle you in the arms of His love. 00:13:08.52\00:13:13.59 Jesus will accept you... 00:13:13.62\00:13:16.52 Jesus will cleanse you... 00:13:16.56\00:13:19.39 won't you make Him the Savior of your life today? 00:13:19.43\00:13:22.83 Join us again as we study 00:13:22.86\00:13:24.77 the sanctuary, salvation and our Savior. 00:13:24.80\00:13:29.54
