Music... 00:00:01.36\00:00:25.39 Welcome back to our Series that we've entitled, 00:00:25.42\00:00:28.09 The Sanctuary, Salvation and our Savior 00:00:28.12\00:00:31.29 and we've been studying the relevance of the sanctuary 00:00:31.33\00:00:34.83 to understanding our own Christian experience 00:00:34.86\00:00:37.13 and walk with Jesus Christ 00:00:37.17\00:00:38.80 also, how the sanctuary reveals what Jesus has done... 00:00:38.83\00:00:42.64 is doing... 00:00:42.70\00:00:44.04 and will do. 00:00:44.07\00:00:45.41 The Bible tells us in the book of Psalms... Psalm 77 verse 13, 00:00:45.44\00:00:49.34 "Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary... " 00:00:49.41\00:00:54.05 in other words, if we want to understand the workings of God 00:00:54.08\00:00:58.15 in the plan of salvation, 00:00:58.19\00:00:59.65 we must look at the sanctuary. 00:00:59.69\00:01:02.02 The sanctuary is our model... 00:01:02.06\00:01:04.29 it's our lens for understanding the work and the ministry 00:01:04.33\00:01:07.73 of Jesus Christ. 00:01:07.76\00:01:09.30 The Bible tells us that Jesus is the Lamb of God 00:01:09.33\00:01:13.94 who takes away the sins of the world. 00:01:13.97\00:01:18.27 The Bible tells us in John chapter 1 verse 29, 00:01:18.31\00:01:21.11 "The next day John saw Jesus coming toward Him, and said, 00:01:21.14\00:01:25.31 'Behold, The Lamb of God 00:01:25.35\00:01:26.68 who takes away the sin of the world!'" 00:01:26.72\00:01:30.45 In other words, Jesus' ministry and life 00:01:30.49\00:01:34.16 can be typified by understanding the function of the lamb 00:01:34.19\00:01:39.29 in the ceremonies and the rituals 00:01:39.33\00:01:41.80 of the Old Testament sanctuary 00:01:41.83\00:01:44.27 and if the Jews had just understood 00:01:44.30\00:01:47.40 John's introduction of Jesus Christ, 00:01:47.44\00:01:50.47 as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, 00:01:50.51\00:01:54.44 they would not have missed the Messiah. 00:01:54.48\00:01:57.48 You see, the sanctuary is more than a doctrine, 00:01:57.51\00:02:00.25 the sanctuary is actually a lens an interpretive key... 00:02:00.28\00:02:05.75 a framework for understanding 00:02:05.79\00:02:08.42 the work and the ministry of Jesus Christ. 00:02:08.46\00:02:10.89 John is using the sanctuary more than just a doctrine... 00:02:10.93\00:02:15.36 he's using it as a hermeneutical key, 00:02:15.40\00:02:18.03 in other words, an interpretive key 00:02:18.07\00:02:20.64 for understanding the work and the ministry of Jesus Christ 00:02:20.67\00:02:24.37 and it's because the Jews did not use the sanctuary 00:02:24.41\00:02:28.51 as their interpretive key, that they missed the Messiah. 00:02:28.54\00:02:32.21 Now, the Jews believed in the sanctuary. 00:02:32.25\00:02:34.35 As a matter of fact, 00:02:34.38\00:02:35.72 the Jews would have died for their sanctuary 00:02:35.75\00:02:38.39 but they were not using the sanctuary 00:02:38.42\00:02:41.12 as their interpretive key 00:02:41.16\00:02:42.96 to understand the work of the Messiah. 00:02:42.99\00:02:45.09 They were using culture, they were using politics, 00:02:45.13\00:02:48.13 they were using anything but the sanctuary 00:02:48.16\00:02:50.57 to understand the work and the ministry of Jesus Christ 00:02:50.60\00:02:53.07 and here John is using the sanctuary 00:02:53.10\00:02:56.54 as his hermeneutical lens, as his reference point 00:02:56.57\00:02:59.77 for understanding the work and the ministry of Jesus, 00:02:59.81\00:03:02.98 and could it be today 00:03:03.01\00:03:04.61 that we're replacing the sanctuary lens... 00:03:04.68\00:03:07.75 the sanctuary framework for culture... 00:03:07.78\00:03:10.62 for another philosophical framework 00:03:10.65\00:03:13.46 for understanding the work and the ministry of Christ 00:03:13.49\00:03:15.59 and perhaps God is calling us back 00:03:15.62\00:03:18.26 to use the sanctuary to understand 00:03:18.29\00:03:20.93 what Jesus has done... 00:03:20.96\00:03:22.30 is doing... 00:03:22.33\00:03:23.67 and will do. 00:03:23.70\00:03:25.03 We noted in an earlier presentation 00:03:25.07\00:03:26.70 that not only did Jesus fulfill the work and the ministry 00:03:26.74\00:03:30.51 as the lamb but also as our High Priest in heaven. 00:03:30.54\00:03:36.38 This is the other entity in the sanctuary 00:03:36.41\00:03:39.65 and the Bible tells us in Hebrews chapter 8 00:03:39.68\00:03:42.88 verses 1 through 5... 00:03:42.92\00:03:44.52 "Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: 00:03:44.55\00:03:47.56 We have such a High Priest, who is seated 00:03:47.59\00:03:51.53 at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, 00:03:51.56\00:03:54.86 a Minister of the sanctuary, 00:03:54.90\00:03:57.40 and of the true tabernacle 00:03:57.43\00:03:59.83 which the Lord erected and not man. " 00:03:59.87\00:04:03.34 So, Jesus did not only fulfill the function of the Lamb, 00:04:03.37\00:04:08.18 but according to Paul, Jesus is fulfilling right now 00:04:08.21\00:04:12.98 the function of the high priest, 00:04:13.01\00:04:15.55 not on earth but in heaven. 00:04:15.58\00:04:17.99 In other words, here Paul is using 00:04:18.02\00:04:21.22 the interpretive key of the sanctuary 00:04:21.29\00:04:24.43 to understand not only the work and the ministry of Jesus Christ 00:04:24.49\00:04:27.93 here on earth 00:04:27.96\00:04:29.30 as the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, 00:04:29.33\00:04:31.30 but also, to help us to understand 00:04:31.33\00:04:34.04 what Jesus is doing right now in heaven. 00:04:34.07\00:04:36.77 What is Jesus doing right now in heaven? 00:04:36.81\00:04:39.47 Here Paul tells us that He is our High Priest in heaven 00:04:39.51\00:04:43.35 ministering in not an earthly sanctuary 00:04:43.38\00:04:47.05 but in an heavenly sanctuary 00:04:47.08\00:04:49.15 that was not constructed by Moses, 00:04:49.18\00:04:52.09 but was constructed by God. 00:04:52.12\00:04:54.92 This is an important point that we cannot miss. 00:04:54.96\00:04:57.36 The sanctuary is our framework... 00:04:57.39\00:05:00.03 it's our lens like eye glasses 00:05:00.06\00:05:02.60 to help us to understand what Jesus has done 00:05:02.66\00:05:05.93 is doing... 00:05:05.97\00:05:07.34 and will do. 00:05:07.37\00:05:08.70 Jesus performed the function of the lamb at the cross... 00:05:08.74\00:05:11.14 Jesus is performing right now according to Paul 00:05:11.17\00:05:14.48 the function of the High Priest in heaven. 00:05:14.51\00:05:17.51 Now, there is another quotation here on the screen 00:05:17.55\00:05:21.05 that I want to take our attention to 00:05:21.08\00:05:22.92 and it's from one of my favorite books, 00:05:22.98\00:05:24.65 it's the book, "The Great Controversy" 00:05:24.69\00:05:26.32 page 423 and it says, "The subject of the sanctuary 00:05:26.35\00:05:30.29 was the key which unlocked the mystery 00:05:30.33\00:05:33.83 of the disappointment of 1844. 00:05:33.86\00:05:36.83 It opened to view a complete system of truth, 00:05:36.87\00:05:41.47 connected and harmonious. " 00:05:41.50\00:05:43.94 Now, in a future presentation, 00:05:43.97\00:05:46.34 we'll unpack exactly what this is talking about 00:05:46.37\00:05:48.78 but in the Advent movement, the great disappointment of 1844 00:05:48.81\00:05:53.11 people assumed that the sanctuary was the earth 00:05:53.18\00:05:56.18 and that Jesus was going to be coming in 1844... 00:05:56.22\00:05:59.19 later on they discovered or I should say, rediscovered... 00:05:59.22\00:06:02.86 this idea that there is no reference in Scripture 00:06:02.89\00:06:07.23 to the earth being the sanctuary 00:06:07.26\00:06:09.70 rather, the Bible points out 00:06:09.76\00:06:12.13 that the sanctuary exists in heaven 00:06:12.17\00:06:15.37 so the cleansing of the sanctuary in heaven 00:06:15.40\00:06:18.37 and this idea and the motif of the sanctuary 00:06:18.41\00:06:21.44 opened to view a complete system of truth, 00:06:21.48\00:06:24.35 we go on in this quotation, 00:06:24.38\00:06:25.78 "Showing that God's hand 00:06:25.81\00:06:27.15 had directed the great Advent Movement 00:06:27.18\00:06:29.12 and revealing present duty 00:06:29.15\00:06:30.92 as it brought to light the position 00:06:30.95\00:06:33.19 and work of His people. " 00:06:33.22\00:06:34.86 In 1844... in the subsequent year, 00:06:34.89\00:06:37.29 people discovered this idea 00:06:37.33\00:06:38.99 that Jesus was engaging in the final work 00:06:39.03\00:06:42.66 of the Day of Atonement in heaven on our behalf. 00:06:42.73\00:06:47.14 So, let's back it up here, 00:06:47.17\00:06:48.70 according to the Bible 00:06:48.74\00:06:50.21 John the Baptist used the sanctuary 00:06:50.24\00:06:53.04 as the interpretive key for understanding 00:06:53.07\00:06:55.24 the work of Jesus Christ on earth. 00:06:55.28\00:06:56.85 It was this hermeneutical lens, the interpretive key 00:06:56.88\00:06:59.75 for understanding the work in Jesus Christ... 00:06:59.81\00:07:01.72 the work of Jesus Christ at the cross 00:07:01.78\00:07:04.42 and then in Hebrews chapter 8, 00:07:04.45\00:07:07.32 Paul uses the sanctuary lens again 00:07:07.36\00:07:11.63 as a hermeneutical lens 00:07:11.66\00:07:13.19 to understand the working ministry 00:07:13.23\00:07:14.76 of Jesus Christ in heaven 00:07:14.80\00:07:16.87 and then in 1844 and the subsequent years, 00:07:16.90\00:07:21.94 the great Advent movement 00:07:21.97\00:07:23.61 used the sanctuary as the interpretive key 00:07:23.67\00:07:27.14 of Jesus fulfilling the work of God in heaven 00:07:27.18\00:07:30.38 in the cleaning of the heavenly sanctuary. 00:07:30.45\00:07:33.58 So, the sanctuary motif... the sanctuary doctrine... 00:07:33.62\00:07:37.82 is actually a lens... 00:07:37.85\00:07:39.99 a key for understanding the work and the ministry 00:07:40.06\00:07:43.93 of Jesus Christ... past... present... and future 00:07:43.96\00:07:47.76 and there's a danger if we're not using the sanctuary lens 00:07:47.83\00:07:51.93 we will use another lens... we will use popular culture... 00:07:51.97\00:07:56.04 we'll use the teachers and the doctors of Theology of the day 00:07:56.10\00:08:00.14 which will replace this important hermeneutic. 00:08:00.18\00:08:03.85 Now, what is the cost of not using the sanctuary? 00:08:03.88\00:08:07.52 The Jews did not use the sanctuary lens 00:08:07.55\00:08:10.19 as a hermeneutical reference point 00:08:10.22\00:08:12.52 for understanding the Messiah, 00:08:12.55\00:08:13.89 and what was the result? 00:08:13.92\00:08:15.26 They rejected God in the flesh. 00:08:15.29\00:08:18.53 You see, not using the sanctuary as a framework 00:08:18.59\00:08:22.10 can lead to a costly existential or experiential result. 00:08:22.13\00:08:29.50 Not using this hermeneutical lens 00:08:29.54\00:08:32.07 can actually cause you to misinterpret 00:08:32.11\00:08:35.18 the work and the ministry of Jesus Christ on our behalf. 00:08:35.24\00:08:39.58 Now, as we go to the screen here, 00:08:39.61\00:08:41.58 this is a quotation from one of my professors 00:08:41.62\00:08:44.45 Fernando Canali, Professor Emeritus of Theology 00:08:44.49\00:08:47.32 at Andrews Theological Seminary 00:08:47.36\00:08:48.96 and he exhorts all leaders to use the sanctuary 00:08:49.02\00:08:52.19 as the interpretive key for understanding Christ. 00:08:52.26\00:08:55.13 Notice what he says, "Leaders, Administrators, 00:08:55.16\00:08:58.03 Pastors and Scholars 00:08:58.07\00:08:59.83 should be going back to Scripture 00:08:59.87\00:09:02.47 and using the sanctuary doctrine as the hermeneutical key 00:09:02.50\00:09:07.58 to understand the complete and harmonious system 00:09:07.61\00:09:12.08 of Biblical truth. " 00:09:12.11\00:09:14.48 Here's a scholar exhorting 00:09:14.52\00:09:16.82 people on every level of ministry... 00:09:16.89\00:09:19.95 Leaders, Administrators, Church Officers 00:09:19.99\00:09:22.99 to use the sanctuary as their hermeneutical reference point 00:09:23.02\00:09:27.10 for understanding the work and the ministry of Jesus Christ. 00:09:27.13\00:09:31.13 We are living in an age today 00:09:31.17\00:09:33.77 where people not only do not believe in the existence 00:09:33.80\00:09:37.84 of the sanctuary, 00:09:37.87\00:09:39.21 but we're living in an age 00:09:39.24\00:09:40.81 where people that even believe in the doctrine of the sanctuary 00:09:40.84\00:09:45.11 are not using it as their hermeneutical reference point 00:09:45.18\00:09:49.18 for understanding the work and the ministry of Jesus Christ. 00:09:49.22\00:09:53.86 Now, when we look at the sanctuary model, 00:09:53.92\00:09:56.83 you'll see that there is movement that is implied 00:09:56.86\00:10:02.26 by the very sanctuary structure 00:10:02.30\00:10:04.57 as we noted in our previous presentation 00:10:04.60\00:10:07.17 there is one access point into the sanctuary... 00:10:07.24\00:10:10.21 you come into the courtyard 00:10:10.24\00:10:12.17 and by implication, God wants to draw you 00:10:12.21\00:10:14.68 into the Holy Place 00:10:14.71\00:10:16.24 and into the Most-Holy-Place experience with Him. 00:10:16.28\00:10:19.58 Adam and Eve were here in the Most Holy Place... 00:10:19.61\00:10:22.85 a face-to-face encounter with God... 00:10:22.88\00:10:25.39 eyeball to eyeball... 00:10:25.45\00:10:27.09 a conversation with God because of sin, 00:10:27.12\00:10:29.52 the entire human race was placed outside of the gate 00:10:29.56\00:10:33.56 and God wants to bring us back. 00:10:33.60\00:10:36.46 The sanctuary idea... 00:10:36.50\00:10:38.27 the sanctuary notion 00:10:38.30\00:10:40.04 is this idea of God bringing us back 00:10:40.07\00:10:43.47 to that face-to-face relationship with God. 00:10:43.51\00:10:47.14 The theme of the sanctuary in actuality 00:10:47.18\00:10:50.75 is all about restoration. 00:10:50.78\00:10:54.55 It is God wanting to bring us back. 00:10:54.58\00:10:58.99 Now, this is one of my favorite quotations from book "Education" 00:10:59.02\00:11:01.92 the book "Education" points out 00:11:01.96\00:11:04.13 that the purpose of the plan of salvation, 00:11:04.16\00:11:07.83 is to restore in man the image of his Maker... 00:11:07.86\00:11:11.37 to bring us back to the perfection 00:11:11.40\00:11:15.10 in which he was created 00:11:15.14\00:11:16.47 to promote the development of body, mind and soul 00:11:16.50\00:11:19.31 that the Divine purpose in His creation might be realized. 00:11:19.34\00:11:22.38 This was to be the work of redemption. 00:11:22.41\00:11:26.45 You see, the plan of salvation is not just about forgiveness... 00:11:26.48\00:11:31.15 forgiveness is an essential part 00:11:31.19\00:11:33.32 and it's the first thing that you experience as a Christian, 00:11:33.36\00:11:36.39 but it's also about restoration. 00:11:36.42\00:11:39.69 God wants to bring us all the way back to Eden... 00:11:39.73\00:11:45.57 not only to the place 00:11:45.60\00:11:47.50 but to restore the person and the image of God in man. 00:11:47.54\00:11:52.21 That is the theme of the sanctuary. 00:11:52.24\00:11:55.18 God bringing us all the way back. 00:11:55.24\00:11:58.11 Now, in Eden, when Adam and Eve sinned, 00:11:58.15\00:12:02.35 there was an immediate physical change that took place, 00:12:02.38\00:12:06.32 remember the Bible indicates that they noticed 00:12:06.35\00:12:09.19 that there was a chill in the air 00:12:09.22\00:12:12.03 immediately after they ate of that forbidden fruit, 00:12:12.06\00:12:14.76 they could sense, the Bible says, 00:12:14.80\00:12:17.40 that they were naked 00:12:17.47\00:12:19.03 and what was their response to this sense of nakedness? 00:12:19.07\00:12:23.30 Immediately there was this emotional sense of shame. 00:12:23.34\00:12:27.54 Have you ever sinned before? 00:12:27.58\00:12:29.68 Have you ever made a mistake? 00:12:29.71\00:12:31.78 How do you feel after you've made that mistake? 00:12:31.81\00:12:36.05 There's an immediate emotional sense of shame. 00:12:36.08\00:12:40.02 And how do we cope with that sense of shame? 00:12:40.06\00:12:43.96 We attempt to cover ourselves 00:12:43.99\00:12:47.13 and this was the response of Adam and Eve. 00:12:47.16\00:12:49.50 They covered themselves in fig leaves 00:12:49.53\00:12:52.90 and this is the universal response when we sin, 00:12:52.93\00:12:56.20 you see, we can't look at our own ugliness. 00:12:56.27\00:12:59.51 We can't come to grips with ourselves 00:12:59.54\00:13:02.28 and so, I believe that all of us 00:13:02.31\00:13:05.01 as a coping mechanism, 00:13:05.05\00:13:06.95 try to live in the state of disillusionment. 00:13:07.02\00:13:11.35 We can't look at ourselves so we cover ourselves... 00:13:11.39\00:13:14.26 we cover our shame with fig leaves 00:13:14.39\00:13:17.26 and this is an example of us covering ourselves 00:13:17.29\00:13:20.00 with our own righteousness. 00:13:20.03\00:13:22.13 The immediate response... 00:13:22.16\00:13:24.17 the immediate feeling that we get to sin... is shame 00:13:24.20\00:13:27.84 and God is going to bring us back 00:13:27.87\00:13:30.87 and you'll notice that the first thing that God does 00:13:30.91\00:13:34.21 in the plan of salvation is that He covers us... 00:13:34.24\00:13:37.48 that's what He did for Adam and Eve. 00:13:37.51\00:13:40.18 He covered them and this was an example 00:13:40.22\00:13:42.82 of the Robe of Righteousness. 00:13:42.85\00:13:45.65 We're going to take a short break right now. 00:13:45.69\00:13:47.99 Stay with us 00:13:48.02\00:13:49.36 and when we come back we'll look at this idea 00:13:49.39\00:13:52.03 of God covering us and cleansing us. 00:13:52.09\00:13:55.73
