00:01:30.22\00:01:31.99 This particular quarterly is called "Present Truth in the 00:01:32.02\00:01:34.92 Book of Deuteronomy," some of you are saying. 00:01:34.96\00:01:38.23 The ones that have already got a quarterly, they faithfully 00:01:38.26\00:01:40.26 studied over the last week. 00:01:40.30\00:01:41.63 They know exactly what it's called. 00:01:41.66\00:01:43.37 So nice to have you here. 00:01:43.40\00:01:44.73 If you haven't studied, make sure that you pay attention 00:01:44.77\00:01:46.37 because there's lots to be able to absorb as we look at one of 00:01:46.40\00:01:48.70 the most important books in the Old Testament, the book of 00:01:48.74\00:01:52.51 Deuteronomy, written by Moses himself. 00:01:52.54\00:01:55.41 So this is a new quarterly. 00:01:55.44\00:01:57.05 We're looking at lesson number one, a "Preamble to 00:01:57.08\00:01:59.61 Deuteronomy," as we look at the context of this particular 00:01:59.65\00:02:01.92 very powerful book. 00:02:01.95\00:02:03.52 And, again, we are glad that you are here to be able to join us 00:02:03.55\00:02:06.69 and study together. 00:02:06.72\00:02:08.12 Before we invite our musicians forward to be This is important question has been asked by 00:02:26.01\00:02:27.44 Christians for centuries. 00:02:27.48\00:02:29.01 It's still asked today. 00:02:29.04\00:02:30.35 It's an important answer to be 00:10:18.05\00:10:19.71 Father in heaven, as we stop, we pause for a moment in reflection 00:10:19.75\00:10:23.55 of the music in which we have just received, that we might 00:10:23.59\00:10:26.49 worship You in prayer and now also in study. 00:10:26.52\00:10:30.33 I want to pray that You will be with our teacher, Pastor Doug 00:10:30.36\00:10:32.76 Batchelor, as he brings to us the Word of 00:10:47.01\00:10:49.71 Doug Batchelor: Thank you, Pastor Shawn. 00:10:51.71\00:10:53.42 Morning, everybody. 00:10:53.45\00:10:55.12 Good to see you here. 00:10:55.15\00:10:56.79 I want to welcome those that are not only here in the Granite Bay 00:10:56.82\00:10:58.82 Hilltop building, I want to welcome our friends that are 00:10:58.85\00:11:01.26 watching on "Amazing Facts" television or Facebook or 00:11:01.29\00:11:04.86 YouTube or one of the hundreds of different ways now. 00:11:04.89\00:11:09.00 The program seemed to fragment and multiply, and we're always 00:11:09.03\00:11:12.27 thankful for that. 00:11:12.30\00:11:13.94 Today I'm excited. 00:11:13.97\00:11:15.34 I specifically asked--today I decided I'm either going to 00:11:15.37\00:11:18.94 preach or teach, and I wanted to teach because this is the first 00:11:18.97\00:11:22.04 lesson in the book of Deuteronomy that we're covering 00:11:22.08\00:11:25.95 today, and I don't know if I've ever shared with you, but 00:11:25.98\00:11:29.28 Deuteronomy is probably one of my favorite books in the Bible. 00:11:29.32\00:11:32.75 Favorite book in the New Testament, Luke, 00:11:32.79\00:11:35.09 since you asked. 00:11:35.12\00:11:36.66 Favorite book in the Old Testament, Deuteronomy. 00:11:36.69\00:11:39.76 And maybe you'll understand why a little bit better 00:11:39.79\00:11:42.46 as we proceed. 00:11:42.50\00:11:44.73 So this book of Deuteronomy is really foundational to 00:11:44.77\00:11:49.84 understanding so much in the Bible, and our title for our 00:11:49.87\00:11:53.58 lesson today--this is lesson number one--is "Preamble to 00:11:53.61\00:11:59.18 Deuteronomy," and the memory verse is from 1 John 4, verse 8. 00:11:59.21\00:12:04.95 If you got your Bibles, you can look that up, and if you want, 00:12:04.99\00:12:07.09 you can say it with me. 00:12:07.12\00:12:08.56 It's a short verse. 00:12:08.59\00:12:09.89 I bet most of you know if by heart already. 00:12:09.92\00:12:11.23 1 John 4, verse 8, "He who does not love does not know God, 00:12:11.26\00:12:17.63 for God is love." 00:12:17.67\00:12:20.50 And we talked in our message last week about the priority of 00:12:20.54\00:12:23.97 knowing God. 00:12:24.01\00:12:25.91 And it says, of course, that love is the essence of God. 00:12:25.94\00:12:31.85 That quintessential essence of God is love. 00:12:31.88\00:12:35.95 It doesn't say God is loving, though He is. 00:12:35.98\00:12:39.79 It doesn't say that God can be lovable, though He can. 00:12:39.82\00:12:43.06 It's saying His essence is, if you were to define Him, love. 00:12:43.09\00:12:48.63 When you look at the Ten Commandments, the first four 00:12:48.66\00:12:50.63 deal with our love relationship with God. 00:12:50.67\00:12:53.80 Last six deal with our love relationship with 00:12:53.84\00:12:55.77 our fellow man. 00:12:55.80\00:12:57.31 But it all springs from love. 00:12:57.34\00:12:59.01 Anyway, with that, I want to dive into our study of 00:12:59.04\00:13:04.11 Deuteronomy with a little disclaimer. 00:13:04.15\00:13:08.28 We got a lot of folks out there that watch "Sabbath School Study 00:13:08.32\00:13:11.25 Hour," and some of you are teachers, and if I don't get all 00:13:11.29\00:13:17.36 the way through the lessons, the teachers kindly chastise me. 00:13:17.39\00:13:21.83 And I'm telling you in advance, it may happen again today. 00:13:21.86\00:13:26.13 I'll do my best, but there's so much I want to say, I may not 00:13:26.17\00:13:28.90 get to all the categories, so please be patient with me, and 00:13:28.94\00:13:33.24 "I will pay thee all" at some point. 00:13:33.27\00:13:37.65 All right, Deuteronomy. 00:13:37.68\00:13:39.48 The name Deuteronomy, it comes from a couple of Greek words. 00:13:39.51\00:13:43.12 It means the second or repeating of the law. 00:13:43.15\00:13:46.79 In Hebrew, Deuteronomy is "Devarim," and it means 00:13:46.82\00:13:51.69 "the words." 00:13:51.73\00:13:53.29 The reason for that--if you got your Bibles, I'm hoping--open 00:13:53.33\00:13:55.56 your Bibles to Deuteronomy chapter 1. 00:13:55.60\00:13:59.43 It is the fifth book of Moses in the Pentateuch. 00:13:59.47\00:14:03.04 Pentateuch, five books. 00:14:03.07\00:14:05.24 It may be the sixth book if Moses wrote Job first, which 00:14:05.27\00:14:10.31 most scholars believe Job was probably the first book that was 00:14:10.35\00:14:13.11 written, but in the Pentateuch of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, 00:14:13.15\00:14:17.42 Numbers, Deuteronomy--Deuteronomy is 00:14:17.45\00:14:19.59 the fifth book. 00:14:19.62\00:14:21.86 Deuteronomy transpires in a short period of time. 00:14:21.89\00:14:24.99 Oh, I was going to read something to you. 00:14:25.03\00:14:26.33 Look at Deuteronomy chapter 1. 00:14:26.36\00:14:28.90 It says, "These are the words." 00:14:28.93\00:14:31.27 That's where you get the Hebrew word for the book of 00:14:31.30\00:14:34.27 Deuteronomy." 00:14:34.30\00:14:35.67 Now, sometimes they called it "Devarim," and sometimes it was 00:14:35.70\00:14:39.34 "Mishneh Torah." 00:14:39.37\00:14:40.98 That means a repeating of the law. 00:14:41.01\00:14:43.14 And, of course, in Greek, it's Deuteronomy. 00:14:43.18\00:14:46.08 Now, sometimes I wish that they had found a shorter title for 00:14:46.11\00:14:49.32 the book because I've still not learned how to spell that. 00:14:49.35\00:14:53.25 Now, the Book of Deuteronomy is called the repeating of the law, 00:14:53.29\00:14:56.73 but it is not an addition to the law. 00:14:56.76\00:14:59.66 In other words, Moses spends some time reviewing 00:14:59.69\00:15:02.56 God's leading. 00:15:02.60\00:15:04.23 In the Book of Deuteronomy, he actually expands a little bit. 00:15:04.27\00:15:07.40 Even in the Ten Commandments that are given in Deuteronomy, 00:15:07.44\00:15:11.37 you'll see that Moses does a little bit of commentary and 00:15:11.41\00:15:14.24 expansion, but there's no conflict between what he says in 00:15:14.28\00:15:18.58 Deuteronomy and the other books. 00:15:18.61\00:15:20.95 Deuteronomy--well, let me--you know what I'm going to do now? 00:15:20.98\00:15:23.28 I'm going to give you the what, the where, the who, the why, and 00:15:23.32\00:15:27.59 the when of Deuteronomy before we dive into it. 00:15:27.62\00:15:31.03 Talking a little bit about the "what." 00:15:31.06\00:15:33.80 Deuteronomy is divided really into three sections. 00:15:33.83\00:15:38.70 It was probably delivered over a period of, oh, 00:15:38.73\00:15:42.57 maybe three weeks. 00:15:42.60\00:15:45.11 We're not sure. 00:15:45.14\00:15:47.04 It's sort of the last message of Moses to the people, and he's 00:15:47.08\00:15:50.58 renewing the covenant. 00:15:50.61\00:15:53.31 You've got verses 1 through--or chapters 1 through 4 of 00:15:53.35\00:15:56.35 Deuteronomy that are dealing with what you would call 00:15:56.38\00:15:59.82 the review. 00:15:59.85\00:16:01.32 He's reviewing God's history and how He led them. 00:16:01.36\00:16:04.93 Then, as you get to chapter 5, he repeats the Ten Commandments. 00:16:04.96\00:16:07.96 You know, the two principle places where you're going to 00:16:07.96\00:16:09.83 find the Ten Commandment, Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy chapter 5. 00:16:09.86\00:16:15.44 And then from chapter 5 to 26, you've got the requirements. 00:16:15.47\00:16:19.31 Well, first you've got the review, then you have the 00:16:19.34\00:16:21.64 requirements, and then, if you go to chapter 27 through the end 00:16:21.68\00:16:25.35 of the book-- 34 chapters in Deuteronomy. 00:16:25.38\00:16:27.82 There you've got the review. 00:16:27.85\00:16:30.09 He's talking--not the review. Sorry--the road ahead. 00:16:30.12\00:16:32.69 So he's talking about the review, the requirements, 00:16:32.72\00:16:36.26 and the road ahead. 00:16:36.29\00:16:38.19 It's broken up nicely into those segments. 00:16:38.23\00:16:40.93 There are 34 chapters. 00:16:40.96\00:16:42.63 It takes about 2.5 hours to read the book of Deuteronomy. 00:16:42.66\00:16:46.74 Deuteronomy is basically--it's a big sermon of Moses renewing 00:16:46.77\00:16:51.81 the covenant. 00:16:51.84\00:16:53.41 Now, why does he need to renew the covenant? 00:16:53.44\00:16:56.61 Well, when they left Egypt, how long ago was that? 00:16:56.64\00:17:00.38 Forty years earlier. 00:17:00.42\00:17:03.28 What has happened to virtually every adult from the time they 00:17:03.32\00:17:07.22 left Egypt to this point in history? 00:17:07.26\00:17:10.89 They've all died. 00:17:10.93\00:17:12.43 Everybody 20 years old and upward has died. 00:17:12.46\00:17:16.20 How old was the oldest person when Moses gives Deuteronomy 00:17:16.23\00:17:18.40 that had left Egypt? 00:17:18.43\00:17:21.90 Fifty-nine or sixty, right? 00:17:21.94\00:17:24.61 Forty plus twenty. 00:17:24.64\00:17:26.51 Am in the right ballpark? 00:17:26.54\00:17:28.61 So you've got a very interesting dynamic here. 00:17:28.64\00:17:30.38 You've got a nation where there is no senior citizens. 00:17:30.41\00:17:35.35 Well, not too many--except three. 00:17:35.38\00:17:38.62 Aaron has died when Deuteronomy is given. 00:17:38.65\00:17:41.02 Miriam has died. 00:17:41.06\00:17:42.96 Moses is alive, and Joshua and Caleb. 00:17:42.99\00:17:48.40 Everybody else is young. 00:17:48.43\00:17:50.17 And most of the people--you know, God told them, "Be 00:17:50.20\00:17:52.27 fruitful and multiply," and they did. 00:17:52.30\00:17:54.40 You read the beginning of Exodus, it says the people grew, 00:17:54.44\00:17:57.07 they grew, they multiplied, they grew exceedingly, and it's 00:17:57.11\00:18:00.38 really emphasizing that the nation exploded. 00:18:00.41\00:18:03.45 That also happened in the wilderness. 00:18:03.48\00:18:06.08 God protected them from disease. 00:18:06.11\00:18:07.95 God gave them food every day. 00:18:07.98\00:18:10.35 I mean, a lot of things--they take out the infants in other 00:18:10.39\00:18:14.42 cultures--they weren't grappling with, and so you've got this 00:18:14.46\00:18:16.96 explosion of young people, whole new generation, and they don't 00:18:16.99\00:18:22.10 know everything or remember everything. 00:18:22.13\00:18:23.83 Many are born during the wilderness wanderings. 00:18:23.87\00:18:26.37 They don't remember the plagues that fell on Egypt. 00:18:26.40\00:18:29.04 They need to hear it again. 00:18:29.07\00:18:31.71 In fact, if you read in Deuteronomy chapter 6, the Lord 00:18:31.74\00:18:37.15 says, "These words that I command you this day shall be 00:18:37.18\00:18:38.68 in your heart. 00:18:38.71\00:18:40.08 You shall teach them diligently to your children when you lay 00:18:40.12\00:18:42.85 down, when you rise up, when you go out, when you come in." 00:18:42.88\00:18:46.12 And so Moses, knowing that he was about to out, he wanted to 00:18:46.15\00:18:49.76 repeat and remind them of God's leading, that they would not 00:18:49.79\00:18:54.30 repeat the history of unbelief of their fathers. 00:18:54.30\00:18:58.87 And so this is a very important renewal of the covenant that is 00:18:58.90\00:19:02.67 happening here. 00:19:02.70\00:19:04.54 Where does this happen? 00:19:04.57\00:19:06.14 Well, in the first few words here it says, "He spoke to them 00:19:06.17\00:19:08.61 in the wilderness, in the plain, opposite Suph, between Paran and 00:19:08.64\00:19:13.75 Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, Dizahab. 00:19:13.78\00:19:18.29 It's 11 days's journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir 00:19:18.32\00:19:22.62 to Kadesh Barnea." 00:19:22.66\00:19:24.09 And so this is happening in the plain on the east side 00:19:24.13\00:19:26.80 of Jordan. 00:19:26.83\00:19:28.40 It's what we would call today the modern Hashemite Kingdom, 00:19:28.43\00:19:31.10 or the country of Jordan. 00:19:31.13\00:19:32.70 They are on the east side of the Jordan River, great plain there. 00:19:32.73\00:19:36.00 Now, how many people are there? 00:19:36.04\00:19:38.94 Well, we don't know exactly, but we can extrapolate. 00:19:38.97\00:19:41.88 The Bible does tell us there were 600,000 that were 00:19:41.91\00:19:46.72 qualified to fight. 00:19:46.75\00:19:48.72 You had to be 20 years old or older to fight in a battle. 00:19:48.75\00:19:52.55 We know all of the older ones had died off, but there's, like, 00:19:52.59\00:19:54.72 600,000 people. 00:19:54.76\00:19:56.66 How many women and children would there be? 00:19:56.69\00:19:59.83 And so conservative estimates are there's, like, two 00:19:59.86\00:20:02.20 million-or-plus people that are gathered here on this plain. 00:20:02.23\00:20:08.64 That's where it happened. Who? 00:20:08.67\00:20:11.71 Moses is speaking, now, is he speaking to all of Israel? 00:20:11.74\00:20:16.01 Well, it says here--read right there. 00:20:16.04\00:20:18.25 "These are the words that Moses spoke to all Israel." 00:20:18.28\00:20:20.82 But if you've got two million people, and you don't have 00:20:20.85\00:20:23.55 artificial PA, can you really address two million people? 00:20:23.59\00:20:28.72 One of the greatest preachers in history, who had the most 00:20:28.76\00:20:30.59 booming voice was George Whitefield, and he was legendary 00:20:30.63\00:20:35.00 for having a voice that he could talk to 10,000 people at once 00:20:35.03\00:20:39.20 without a PA system. 00:20:39.23\00:20:41.94 And Benjamin Franklin reports in his autobiography that he did a 00:20:41.97\00:20:45.27 test, because he had heard about Whitefield's voice--they were 00:20:45.31\00:20:47.78 actually friends and exchanged quite a few letters--that, one 00:20:47.81\00:20:50.48 day, when he was preaching in Philadelphia, Franklin--you 00:20:50.51\00:20:53.82 know, he's always a scientist--he paced off how far 00:20:53.85\00:20:57.12 away he could go, and I think he got at least half a mile away, 00:20:57.15\00:21:00.76 and you could still hear him, which is extraordinary. 00:21:00.79\00:21:04.13 It helps if you're up on an elevated spot, and even if Moses 00:21:04.16\00:21:07.40 was standing on the mountainside and talking to the people in the 00:21:07.46\00:21:10.13 plain, it'd be very difficult for two million people to hear. 00:21:10.17\00:21:15.34 So when it says, "He spoke to Israel," what they often do--it 00:21:15.37\00:21:18.67 says in other places--they spoke to the heads of the families. 00:21:18.71\00:21:23.98 And so--and then they would, you know, subsequently relate this 00:21:24.01\00:21:27.45 thing to the teachings to their families. 00:21:27.48\00:21:31.32 But probably the 70 elders and the heads of the families and 00:21:31.35\00:21:34.29 the tribes were at the forefront in the best seats where they 00:21:34.32\00:21:38.33 could hear and see what Moses was saying, why? 00:21:38.36\00:21:42.00 As I mentioned, he's renewing the covenant, and they needed to 00:21:42.03\00:21:44.23 hear it again, when? 00:21:44.27\00:21:45.93 This happens about 1406 B.C. 00:21:45.97\00:21:50.07 That's about the year that Joshua also led the children of 00:21:50.11\00:21:54.71 Israel into the Promised Land, and it contains an account of 00:21:54.74\00:21:58.65 what happened in the wilderness from the first day--it gives you 00:21:58.68\00:22:00.65 the dates here. 00:22:00.68\00:22:02.05 It says, "From the first day of the 11th month of the 40th year, 00:22:02.08\00:22:05.55 wandering in the wilderness after the departure from Egypt." 00:22:05.59\00:22:10.16 And the book of Deuteronomy concludes with the death 00:22:10.19\00:22:12.79 of Moses. 00:22:12.83\00:22:14.20 It actually talks about 30 days of mourning following 00:22:14.23\00:22:17.47 Moses's death. 00:22:17.50\00:22:19.13 And so it's interesting that, in the 40th year, you've got this 00:22:19.17\00:22:22.10 book that covers about 40 days. 00:22:22.14\00:22:24.71 So God always does things in a fascinating way. 00:22:24.74\00:22:28.91 All right, and then I want you to turn with me in the 00:22:28.94\00:22:32.58 Bible--this is one of the most important books in the Bible. 00:22:32.61\00:22:35.32 Turn with me in Deuteronomy chapter 27. 00:22:35.35\00:22:38.29 I want to read something to you. 00:22:38.32\00:22:40.22 I'm going to read Deuteronomy 27, verses 1 through 8. 00:22:40.26\00:22:46.33 Deuteronomy is something of a summary of the covenant that 00:22:46.36\00:22:49.86 they used as their constitution. 00:22:49.90\00:22:52.93 So you think about the most important documents in America, 00:22:52.97\00:22:57.17 and you're going to think of the Bill of Rights and the 00:22:57.21\00:22:59.74 Constitution, Declaration of Independence. 00:22:59.77\00:23:01.88 Probably one of the most important books for the nation 00:23:01.91\00:23:03.88 of Israel was the book of Deuteronomy. 00:23:03.91\00:23:06.15 Notice what it says here. 00:23:06.18\00:23:07.62 In verse 1, chapter 27 in Deuteronomy, "Now Moses, with 00:23:07.65\00:23:11.52 the elders of Israel, commanded the people, saying, 'Keep the 00:23:11.55\00:23:15.79 commandments which I command you today. 00:23:15.82\00:23:18.59 And it shall be, on the day when you cross over the Jordan to the 00:23:18.63\00:23:22.30 land which the Lord your God is giving you, that you will set up 00:23:22.33\00:23:25.87 for yourself large stones--'" and this was to happen between 00:23:25.90\00:23:29.44 the mountains of Ebal and in the area of Ephraim-- 00:23:29.47\00:23:35.38 "and whitewash them with lime. 00:23:35.41\00:23:38.21 And you'll write on them all the words of this law--" 00:23:38.25\00:23:41.65 and he's talking about the book of Deuteronomy-- "when you've 00:23:41.68\00:23:44.29 crossed over, that you may enter the land which the Lord your God 00:23:44.32\00:23:47.56 is giving you, 'in a land flowing with milk and honey,' 00:23:47.59\00:23:50.66 just as the Lord God your God, the God of your fathers 00:23:50.69\00:23:54.00 promised you. 00:23:54.03\00:23:55.40 Therefore, it shall be when you have crossed over the Jordan on 00:23:55.43\00:23:58.60 that Mount Ebal, you shall set up these stones that I command 00:23:58.63\00:24:02.30 you today, and you'll whitewash them with lime." 00:24:02.34\00:24:05.51 They basically had a form of primitive concrete back then, 00:24:05.54\00:24:08.84 and they were going to mix that up. 00:24:08.88\00:24:10.41 You know, they've been builders in Egypt. 00:24:10.45\00:24:12.05 They knew the best technology-- "whitewash them with lime, and 00:24:12.08\00:24:15.55 there you shall build an altar to the Lord your God, 00:24:15.58\00:24:17.79 an altar of stones. 00:24:17.82\00:24:19.22 You'll not use an iron tool on them." 00:24:19.25\00:24:20.59 Don't make any image. 00:24:20.62\00:24:21.99 "You shall build them with whole stones the altar of 00:24:22.02\00:24:24.26 the Lord your God. 00:24:24.29\00:24:25.63 Offer burnt offerings on it to the Lord your God. 00:24:25.66\00:24:28.10 You'll offer peace offerings, and shall eat there, and rejoice 00:24:28.13\00:24:31.10 before the Lord your God." 00:24:31.13\00:24:32.47 Notice verse 8, "And you shall write very plainly on the stones 00:24:32.50\00:24:38.64 all the words of this law." 00:24:38.67\00:24:41.01 There in the middle of the land, the Mount Ebal, the opposite on 00:24:41.04\00:24:44.88 the Mount--what are the two mountains of blessing 00:24:44.91\00:24:47.95 and cursing? 00:24:47.98\00:24:50.95 Is it--okay, blank, brain cramp, it'll come back. 00:24:50.99\00:24:57.06 On these two mountains--they had the mountain of blessing, which 00:24:57.09\00:24:59.33 is where they put the stones, and then they had the other 00:24:59.36\00:25:01.50 mountain where the people would stand. 00:25:01.53\00:25:05.17 And they were to put these stones and write on--can you 00:25:05.20\00:25:09.27 imagine being the guy, and they say, "We need a scribe." 00:25:09.30\00:25:12.37 "Okay." 00:25:12.41\00:25:13.78 "And we want you to write out the book of Deuteronomy 00:25:13.81\00:25:16.88 in stone." 00:25:16.91\00:25:19.75 Like I said, it takes two and a half hours, but this was 00:25:19.78\00:25:22.18 so important. 00:25:22.22\00:25:23.55 They wanted to have a big wall, and on this wall the 00:25:23.59\00:25:27.29 constitution of their covenant with the Lord in the middle of 00:25:27.32\00:25:30.23 the Promised Land. 00:25:30.26\00:25:31.96 I think that's very significant. 00:25:31.99\00:25:33.36 Something else I want you to notice. 00:25:33.40\00:25:34.73 Go to Deuteronomy chapter 17, verse 18. 00:25:34.76\00:25:38.23 Moses is giving some instructions. 00:25:38.27\00:25:39.77 Deuteronomy 17, verse 18, "Also it shall be that when he, the 00:25:39.80\00:25:46.37 king that you've chosen--" see, back in the book of Samuel, when 00:25:46.41\00:25:49.64 the people asked for a king, and Samuel said, "You know, God is 00:25:49.68\00:25:53.18 your King," God always knew they would ultimately do that because 00:25:53.21\00:25:55.85 he gives a law here about it. 00:25:55.88\00:25:57.89 He says, "When you pick a king from among your people," it 00:25:57.92\00:26:01.16 says, "and he sits on the throne of the kingdom, he shall write 00:26:01.19\00:26:05.23 for himself a copy of this law in a book, from before one of 00:26:05.26\00:26:12.57 the priests in the Levites. 00:26:12.60\00:26:14.57 And it shall be with him, and he shall read it all the days of 00:26:14.60\00:26:18.97 his life, that he might learn to fear the Lord his God and be 00:26:19.01\00:26:22.28 careful to observe all the words of this law 00:26:22.31\00:26:25.71 and these statutes--" 00:26:25.75\00:26:27.85 now, how many of you remember the story where the 00:26:27.88\00:26:30.52 priests were cleaning out the temple of the Lord during 00:26:30.55\00:26:33.05 the time of Josiah? 00:26:33.09\00:26:35.26 And it says, "We found the book." 00:26:35.29\00:26:37.66 You know what book they found? 00:26:37.69\00:26:39.96 They found the book of the law that was supposed to be read 00:26:40.00\00:26:41.96 before the king, and Hilkiah the priest found it. 00:26:42.00\00:26:46.17 He went in and said, "We have found the book of the law." 00:26:46.20\00:26:48.67 He reads it to King Josiah, who weeps and tears his clothes. 00:26:48.70\00:26:52.01 He thought, "If I'd only had this before." 00:26:52.04\00:26:55.18 So you find that the Book of Deuteronomy was to sort of be 00:26:55.21\00:26:58.81 a constitution for them. 00:26:58.85\00:27:00.68 It was in the middle of the land. 00:27:00.72\00:27:02.15 It was supposed to be read before the king, and now to top 00:27:02.18\00:27:05.69 things off, you go to the New Testament. 00:27:05.72\00:27:08.92 In the temptation of Christ in the wilderness, you read in 00:27:08.96\00:27:12.29 Matthew chapter 4, devil comes, and he says, "If you're the Son 00:27:12.33\00:27:15.83 of God, turn these stones into bread." 00:27:15.86\00:27:18.50 Christ responds, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread 00:27:18.53\00:27:24.07 alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth 00:27:24.11\00:27:27.21 of the Lord.'" 00:27:27.24\00:27:29.08 What book was Jesus quoting? 00:27:29.11\00:27:31.81 Deuteronomy. 00:27:31.85\00:27:33.38 Well, the devil goes for strike two, and he says--the devil then 00:27:33.42\00:27:39.92 tempts Him, and he leads Him up to the temple, and he says, "If 00:27:39.95\00:27:43.66 You're the Son of God, jump off, for it is written, 00:27:43.69\00:27:46.26 'His angels will bear--'" 00:27:46.29\00:27:47.76 and he's quoting Psalm 91 or misquoting Psalm 91. 00:27:47.76\00:27:50.63 "They'll bear You in Your hands lest You dash your foot 00:27:50.67\00:27:52.90 against a stone." 00:27:52.93\00:27:54.87 And he leaves out the part that says, "And keeps You 00:27:54.90\00:27:56.50 in all Your ways." 00:27:56.54\00:27:59.31 And Jesus says, "It is written," Matthew 4:7, "You shall not 00:27:59.34\00:28:03.14 tempt the Lord your God." 00:28:03.18\00:28:06.25 And then the devil says, "Bow down and worship me, and I'll 00:28:06.28\00:28:10.12 give You all these kingdoms. 00:28:10.15\00:28:11.62 You don't need to die." 00:28:11.65\00:28:13.66 And Jesus says, "Away with you, Satan, for it is written, 'You 00:28:13.69\00:28:17.03 shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.'" 00:28:17.06\00:28:20.63 Now, all three times Jesus was tempted, 00:28:20.66\00:28:23.13 He returned to Scripture. 00:28:23.16\00:28:25.30 What Scripture did He return to? 00:28:25.33\00:28:28.10 Deuteronomy 8:3, "So He humbled you and allowed you to hunger 00:28:28.14\00:28:32.57 and thirst--hunger, and He fed you with manna that you did not 00:28:32.61\00:28:36.11 know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that 00:28:36.14\00:28:39.28 man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that 00:28:39.31\00:28:42.28 proceeds from the mouth of God." 00:28:42.32\00:28:44.49 That's Deuteronomy. 00:28:44.52\00:28:46.35 You read Deuteronomy 6:16, "You shall not tempt the Lord your 00:28:46.39\00:28:49.99 God as you tempted Him in Massah." 00:28:50.03\00:28:53.09 You read in Deuteronomy 6:13-14, "You shall fear the name of the 00:28:53.13\00:28:58.33 Lord your God and serve Him, and take oaths in His name. 00:28:58.37\00:29:02.54 You shall not go after other gods--" that's why Jesus said, 00:29:02.57\00:29:05.41 "You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only 00:29:05.44\00:29:07.11 shall you serve." 00:29:07.14\00:29:08.74 All three times Jesus was tempted, what book 00:29:08.78\00:29:11.65 does he resort to? 00:29:11.68\00:29:13.45 Deuteronomy. 00:29:13.48\00:29:14.95 Now, I could be wrong, but I think it's safe to say Jesus had 00:29:14.98\00:29:18.02 probably memorized this book, and so I just kind of want to 00:29:18.05\00:29:21.62 give you a little backdrop. 00:29:21.66\00:29:23.56 As you start studying the book of Deuteronomy, you're studying 00:29:23.59\00:29:26.29 basically the foundation document of the Old Testament. 00:29:26.33\00:29:30.63 Now, you can read in Deuteronomy 31--actually, I want to go to 00:29:30.67\00:29:35.34 Deuteronomy verse 30. 00:29:35.37\00:29:37.41 Deuteronomy is a book of prophecy. 00:29:37.44\00:29:40.74 I don't know if you've ever thought of it that way, but it's 00:29:40.78\00:29:43.55 not just a history book, it's a prophetic book. 00:29:43.58\00:29:47.12 For example, Deuteronomy 30:1-3, "Now it will come to pass, when 00:29:47.15\00:29:51.29 all these things come upon you, the blessings and the cursing--" 00:29:51.32\00:29:54.46 you can read about that in Deuteronomy 28-- "which I've set 00:29:54.49\00:29:57.56 before you, and you call them to mind among all the nations where 00:29:57.59\00:30:00.53 the Lord your God drives you, and you return to the Lord your 00:30:00.56\00:30:03.63 God and obey His voice, according to all that I command 00:30:03.67\00:30:06.57 you today, you and your children, with all of your 00:30:06.60\00:30:10.51 heart, with all of your soul, the Lord God will bring you back 00:30:10.54\00:30:13.61 from captivity, and have compassion on you, and gather 00:30:13.64\00:30:16.81 you again from all the nations where the Lord your God 00:30:16.85\00:30:20.05 has scattered you." 00:30:20.08\00:30:21.55 Well, what's in here? 00:30:21.58\00:30:23.05 Moses is saying, "You're going to play the harlot with 00:30:23.08\00:30:25.52 other gods. 00:30:25.55\00:30:27.39 You're going to be conquered. 00:30:27.42\00:30:28.82 You're going to be carried off to captivity. 00:30:28.86\00:30:30.53 When you return to Me in your land of captivity and you pray 00:30:30.56\00:30:32.76 to Me, I will forgive you, and I'll bring you back, not just 00:30:32.79\00:30:35.50 from the nation but from all of the nations." 00:30:35.53\00:30:38.80 Now, did God do that? 00:30:38.83\00:30:41.47 Did that all happen? 00:30:41.50\00:30:43.51 Anyone that knows a modicum of history knows how Israel has 00:30:43.54\00:30:46.31 been carried off twice now, not only scattered and carried off 00:30:46.34\00:30:49.88 by the Babylonians, but then conquered by the Romans and 00:30:49.91\00:30:52.31 scattered in many nations and brought back again. 00:30:52.35\00:30:55.65 And so Moses, of course, was a prophet. 00:30:55.68\00:30:58.95 Nobody will contest that. 00:30:58.99\00:31:00.42 You look in Deuteronomy 31, verse 16, "And the Lord said to 00:31:00.46\00:31:05.53 Moses, 'Behold, you will rest with your fathers, and this 00:31:05.56\00:31:09.10 people will rise up and play the harlot with the gods of 00:31:09.13\00:31:12.23 foreigners of the land, which they go to be among them, and 00:31:12.27\00:31:15.84 they'll forsake Me and break My covenant that I've 00:31:15.87\00:31:18.31 made with them." 00:31:18.34\00:31:19.71 I wonder, you know, "God, why did you tell that to Moses 00:31:19.74\00:31:22.31 just before he died? 00:31:22.34\00:31:23.78 But, anyway, God said this was what's going to happen. 00:31:23.81\00:31:27.85 Also one of the most vivid prophecies of Jesus is found 00:31:27.88\00:31:31.79 in the Book of Deuteronomy. 00:31:31.82\00:31:33.62 Look in Deuteronomy 18, verse 15, "The Lord your God will 00:31:33.66\00:31:37.63 raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, 00:31:37.66\00:31:41.26 from your brethren. 00:31:41.30\00:31:42.86 Him you shall hear, according to all that you desired of the Lord 00:31:42.90\00:31:46.57 your God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, 'Let us 00:31:46.60\00:31:50.24 not hear again the voice of the Lord God anymore. 00:31:50.27\00:31:52.51 Let us not see this great fire anymore, lest we die.' 00:31:52.54\00:31:57.41 And the Lord said to me, 'What they have spoken is good. 00:31:57.45\00:32:00.38 I will raise up for them a Prophet--'" in other words, God 00:32:00.42\00:32:03.32 was saying--they were saying to the Lord, "We can't bear to talk 00:32:03.35\00:32:07.62 to you face-to-face after Mount Sinai." 00:32:07.66\00:32:10.56 God says, "I will give you a Mediator. 00:32:10.59\00:32:12.83 I'll speak to Him, and He will speak to you." 00:32:12.86\00:32:15.30 Jesus is the ultimate Mediator in that God became a man. 00:32:15.33\00:32:18.97 He says, "The Lord God will raise up a prophet 00:32:19.00\00:32:21.14 for you like me." 00:32:21.17\00:32:22.54 Moses the prophet, the priest, the lawgiver, the judge. 00:32:22.57\00:32:27.04 Jesus is our prophet, our priest, our lawgiver, our judge. 00:32:27.08\00:32:31.11 Moses was the savior born, you know, there in interesting 00:32:31.15\00:32:35.85 circumstances as a baby. 00:32:35.88\00:32:38.29 Born among the slaves, but he was not a slave. 00:32:38.32\00:32:40.29 Jesus was born among sinners, but He was not a sinner. 00:32:40.32\00:32:43.12 There are many, many ways where Jesus is a type of Moses. 00:32:43.16\00:32:46.46 And the disciples, many times, when they spoke to Jesus--or 00:32:46.49\00:32:52.50 John the Baptist, they said, "Are you Elijah?" 00:32:52.53\00:32:55.70 This is Mark 6:15. 00:32:55.74\00:32:57.37 "Are you Elijah?" 00:32:57.41\00:32:59.11 He said, "Or are you the prophet?" 00:32:59.14\00:33:02.74 They used to say, "Are you that prophet that we're looking for?" 00:33:02.78\00:33:06.72 They didn't have a name for him, but they heard that Elijah was 00:33:06.75\00:33:09.28 coming back, but there was this enigmatic prophet that Moses 00:33:09.32\00:33:13.69 talked about that was nameless. 00:33:13.72\00:33:15.89 So they always called him "that prophet." 00:33:15.92\00:33:18.69 And so they knew this great prophet like Moses was coming. 00:33:18.73\00:33:23.03 All right, that was my introduction. 00:33:23.06\00:33:26.40 I hope it was edifying. 00:33:26.43\00:33:27.80 As I teach other lessons along the way, I'll be able to delve 00:33:27.84\00:33:32.24 into some more. 00:33:32.27\00:33:34.28 Now let's go to the first section under Sunday, 00:33:34.31\00:33:37.18 "Love to be Loved." 00:33:37.21\00:33:40.45 The word "love" is found 25 times in the book of 00:33:40.48\00:33:42.95 Deuteronomy. 00:33:42.98\00:33:44.35 People often say to me, "Oh, the Old Testament is all law, 00:33:44.39\00:33:48.09 law, law. 00:33:48.12\00:33:49.49 Jesus is love, love, love." 00:33:49.52\00:33:51.03 But, in fact, there's a lot of love in the Old Testament. 00:33:51.06\00:33:54.10 I don't know if I'll have time to read them all, but you read 00:33:54.13\00:33:56.90 in Deuteronomy 6, verse 4, "Hear, O Israel--" this is 00:33:56.93\00:34:00.17 called the great Mishnah-- "the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 00:34:00.20\00:34:05.07 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and your 00:34:05.11\00:34:08.44 soul and your strength." 00:34:08.48\00:34:09.84 That's the great commandment, Jesus said. 00:34:09.88\00:34:12.15 Deuteronomy 7, verse 8, "Because the Lord loves you, and because 00:34:12.18\00:34:16.55 He would keep his oath that He swore to your fathers, the Lord 00:34:16.58\00:34:19.99 has brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you 00:34:20.02\00:34:22.89 from the house of bondage--" not just talks about us loving God. 00:34:22.92\00:34:25.89 It says God loves us. 00:34:25.93\00:34:28.10 In Deuteronomy 7:13, "And He will love you and bless you and 00:34:28.13\00:34:32.33 multiply you. 00:34:32.37\00:34:34.00 He'll also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your 00:34:34.04\00:34:36.27 grain--" he talks about God will love us. 00:34:36.30\00:34:39.47 And then Deuteronomy 30, this is the end of the book or near the 00:34:39.51\00:34:42.28 end: "That you may love the Lord your God and obey His voice--" 00:34:42.31\00:34:46.98 so the idea of loving God and keeping His commandments, do you 00:34:47.02\00:34:50.42 just find that in John chapter 14, or is Jesus actually quoting 00:34:50.45\00:34:54.99 the teachings of Moses? 00:34:55.02\00:34:58.16 "Love and obey God." 00:34:58.19\00:35:00.06 In fact, in the Ten Commandments, do you 00:35:00.10\00:35:02.26 find the word "love"? 00:35:02.30\00:35:06.13 Come on, that's not a hard question, yes. 00:35:06.17\00:35:10.57 "Showing mercy unto thousands of them that love Me and keep My 00:35:10.61\00:35:12.87 commandments." 00:35:12.91\00:35:14.74 And so love is the foundation, it's the heart of the law. 00:35:14.78\00:35:17.18 Now what is our problem? 00:35:17.21\00:35:21.18 Our problem is sin, what is sin? 00:35:21.22\00:35:24.02 Sin is selfishness. 00:35:24.05\00:35:27.16 You want to find an easy way to define "sin"? 00:35:27.19\00:35:29.42 Whenever I'm thinking sinful thoughts, I'm thinking selfish 00:35:29.46\00:35:31.53 thoughts. 00:35:31.56\00:35:33.36 Sin always springs from selfishness. 00:35:33.40\00:35:36.16 Our problem is God created us where if--God is love, right? 00:35:36.20\00:35:39.77 We all agree? 00:35:39.80\00:35:41.34 God made man in His image. 00:35:41.37\00:35:45.97 Man was made loving, and then, because of sin, the compass 00:35:46.01\00:35:51.28 needle, God skewed 180 degrees. 00:35:51.31\00:35:54.62 Instead of our thinking of loving God and loving others as 00:35:54.65\00:35:56.99 we love ourself, we love ourself first. 00:35:57.02\00:36:01.56 And because of that selfishness, every other sin flows from that. 00:36:01.59\00:36:05.69 So when we're praying for salvation, we're praying for 00:36:05.73\00:36:07.66 loving hearts. 00:36:07.73\00:36:09.10 What's the new birth? 00:36:09.13\00:36:11.07 "I'll put a new heart within you." 00:36:11.10\00:36:13.70 Instead of being motivated by selfishness, 00:36:13.74\00:36:15.44 we're motivated by love. 00:36:15.47\00:36:17.67 So where did this problem begin? 00:36:17.71\00:36:20.48 It's a perversion of love. 00:36:20.51\00:36:23.81 Instead of our being now in God's image, we took on the 00:36:23.85\00:36:26.85 image of a new master, Satan, who rebels, was the highest of 00:36:26.88\00:36:32.72 God's angels, and he began to think those selfish thoughts, 00:36:32.75\00:36:36.96 wondering why he was not God, why he did not have all the 00:36:36.99\00:36:39.46 power of God, and you can read about this in Isaiah 14, "How 00:36:39.49\00:36:44.30 you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning. 00:36:44.33\00:36:47.70 How you are cut down to the ground, you who weakened the 00:36:47.74\00:36:50.14 nations. 00:36:50.17\00:36:51.97 For you said in your heart--" something happened 00:36:52.01\00:36:53.64 in his heart-- "I'll ascend into heaven. 00:36:53.68\00:36:56.68 I will exalt my throne--I want my glory--above the stars 00:36:56.71\00:37:00.12 of God. 00:37:00.15\00:37:01.82 I'll also sit on the mount of the congregation, the heavenly 00:37:01.85\00:37:04.52 throne, on the farthest sides of the north. 00:37:04.55\00:37:07.52 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds--" maybe nebula 00:37:07.56\00:37:10.39 clouds-- "I'll be like the Most High." 00:37:10.43\00:37:13.90 So Satan was desiring the place of God, "I, I, I, I, I." 00:37:13.93\00:37:18.67 And God is about love, love, love. 00:37:18.70\00:37:21.24 And so God created a beautiful angel that of his own free will 00:37:21.27\00:37:25.51 chose to not live for the glory of God but to decide to live 00:37:25.54\00:37:28.81 for his own glory. 00:37:28.84\00:37:30.88 And we've all been contaminated with that selfishness 00:37:30.91\00:37:33.82 and that sin. 00:37:33.85\00:37:35.38 During worship at "Amazing Facts" this week, I asked the 00:37:35.42\00:37:37.52 question, "If you see a group photograph, and you're in the 00:37:37.55\00:37:39.59 group, where do you first look?" 00:37:39.62\00:37:43.16 If you're honest, do you say, "Oh, so-and-so looks really 00:37:43.19\00:37:46.49 good, and they look really--" first thing you do is you go 00:37:46.53\00:37:49.03 over that picture, and you look for yourself. 00:37:49.06\00:37:52.00 It's because we've got a broken compass needle, and it always 00:37:52.03\00:37:55.10 points to self. 00:37:55.14\00:37:57.81 So, of course, there was a war in heaven. 00:37:57.84\00:38:01.01 We're leading up to Deuteronomy now. 00:38:01.04\00:38:03.04 There was a rebellion. Satan was cast to the earth. 00:38:03.08\00:38:05.91 This earth now has taken on a different master, and 00:38:05.95\00:38:10.82 Satan--even Jesus calls the devil, "the prince 00:38:10.85\00:38:13.42 of this world." 00:38:13.46\00:38:15.09 That's why Satan said, "I'll give it back to You. 00:38:15.12\00:38:16.59 You don't have to die if You worship me." 00:38:16.62\00:38:18.66 So Christ came to redeem the world in a legitimate way by 00:38:18.69\00:38:22.33 paying the price for our sin and transforming our hearts, 00:38:22.36\00:38:26.43 re-creating us in His own image. 00:38:26.47\00:38:30.07 That's the new birth, where God then gives us, once again, 00:38:30.11\00:38:33.84 His own mind. 00:38:33.88\00:38:35.71 The mind of Christ is in us. 00:38:35.74\00:38:37.61 Well, following--you get the fall of the human race. 00:38:37.65\00:38:41.62 Now we've got the fall and the flood. 00:38:41.65\00:38:43.69 So God creates man. 00:38:43.72\00:38:46.49 Satan there, in the Garden of Eden, he tempts Adam and Eve to 00:38:46.52\00:38:49.92 surrender their freedom. 00:38:49.96\00:38:51.99 The Bible says in Romans 6, "Whoever you obey, that's whose 00:38:52.03\00:38:54.83 servant you are, whoever you obey." 00:38:54.83\00:38:57.40 And when they chose to obey what the devil said, instead of what 00:38:57.43\00:39:00.67 God said, they surrendered the dominion that God had given them 00:39:00.70\00:39:04.11 of this world, to the arch deceiver, and the devil and his 00:39:04.14\00:39:08.18 angels were ultimately restricted to this planet. 00:39:08.21\00:39:11.41 Prior to this, I think that they roamed through the cosmos and 00:39:11.45\00:39:13.88 tried to get other worlds to follow them. 00:39:13.92\00:39:16.42 Satan had gotten one-third of the angels. 00:39:16.45\00:39:18.22 He thought he might get another, maybe, unfallen intelligent 00:39:18.25\00:39:20.79 beings, but there were none except this beautiful new planet 00:39:20.82\00:39:24.93 where people were made in God's image, and Satan took this as 00:39:24.96\00:39:28.06 his headquarters. 00:39:28.10\00:39:29.73 This is now the beachhead where Satan is carrying out the great 00:39:29.76\00:39:31.97 controversy on this planet. 00:39:32.00\00:39:34.34 You can see what happened to the world in the days of Noah, when 00:39:34.37\00:39:39.24 the sons of God, children of Seth, who still worshiped God, 00:39:39.27\00:39:44.61 they stayed separate from his brother Cain and their 00:39:44.65\00:39:48.32 descendants, who were living purely selfish, 00:39:48.35\00:39:51.09 hedonistic lives. 00:39:51.12\00:39:53.19 When the children of Seth, in their shopping at the mall, they 00:39:53.22\00:39:56.79 saw the daughters of men, the daughters of Cain, 00:39:56.83\00:39:59.46 that they were fair. 00:39:59.49\00:40:00.96 The distinction was lost because the sons of God began to 00:40:00.96\00:40:04.03 intermarry with the daughters of men. 00:40:04.07\00:40:05.93 Some people think this is talking about aliens or angels 00:40:05.97\00:40:09.37 marrying with humans, and they're just totally missing 00:40:09.40\00:40:12.14 the language in the Bible. 00:40:12.17\00:40:13.58 Bible says--what? 00:40:13.61\00:40:15.61 "Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us that 00:40:15.64\00:40:18.51 we should be called sons of God." 00:40:18.55\00:40:20.55 When we are saved, the Bible calls us "sons and daughters 00:40:20.58\00:40:22.62 of God." 00:40:22.65\00:40:23.99 It is used for angels in other places, but it's used 00:40:24.02\00:40:25.92 for people. 00:40:25.95\00:40:27.29 So these are the children of Seth, intermarried with the 00:40:27.32\00:40:29.72 children of Cain. 00:40:29.76\00:40:31.36 They lost their spiritual holiness and identity, and then 00:40:31.39\00:40:35.06 it says, "The thoughts of men's hearts were only 00:40:35.10\00:40:38.23 evil continually. 00:40:38.27\00:40:39.77 Violence filled the world." 00:40:39.80\00:40:41.70 God then declared something that's heartbreaking. 00:40:41.74\00:40:43.84 It made God sorry that he made man, and he said, "I'm going to 00:40:43.87\00:40:47.14 wipe them all out." 00:40:47.18\00:40:49.34 But he said, "I love them, so I'll save a remnant, and from 00:40:49.38\00:40:53.42 them, I'll repopulate the world, and we'll try it again." 00:40:53.45\00:40:58.02 So you got the story of Noah and that he finds grace in the Lord. 00:40:58.05\00:41:04.59 Well, not too long after Noah, he discovers wine, and we have 00:41:04.63\00:41:08.30 problems again. 00:41:08.33\00:41:10.27 And then you got the Tower of Babel, and they sort of try and 00:41:10.30\00:41:12.50 develop a man-made religion on the earth, salvation by works. 00:41:12.53\00:41:17.34 "In case God floods the world, we'll build a tower to heaven." 00:41:17.37\00:41:20.31 And God confounds that and scatters them. 00:41:20.34\00:41:23.21 Well, then God says, "I'm going to call another remnant," and he 00:41:23.24\00:41:27.38 finds a faithful man, a man that he believes has a heart after 00:41:27.42\00:41:30.65 his heart. 00:41:30.69\00:41:32.09 His name is Abraham. 00:41:32.12\00:41:35.39 And that's in section three. 00:41:35.42\00:41:37.96 And God says in Genesis 12:1, "The Lord says to Abram--" his 00:41:37.99\00:41:42.16 name isn't Abraham yet-- "Get out of your country, from your 00:41:42.20\00:41:47.30 family, and from your father's house, to a land that I will 00:41:47.34\00:41:50.57 show you, and I will make you a great nation. 00:41:50.61\00:41:55.41 I will bless you and make your name great, 00:41:55.44\00:41:57.38 and you shall be a blessing. 00:41:57.41\00:41:59.28 And I'll bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who 00:41:59.31\00:42:01.92 curses you, and in you all the families of the earth 00:42:01.95\00:42:05.92 will be blessed." 00:42:05.95\00:42:07.59 And He's talking about bless with the ultimate blessing. 00:42:07.62\00:42:09.86 Now, what is the ultimate blessing? 00:42:09.89\00:42:12.29 God, through Abraham, God the Son would come, and Jesus would 00:42:12.33\00:42:18.57 be born, the Messiah. 00:42:18.60\00:42:20.94 And through Jesus, salvation would come, not just through one 00:42:20.97\00:42:23.64 race of people, but to all people whosoever will. 00:42:23.67\00:42:27.74 All the nations of the world would be blessed through Christ. 00:42:27.78\00:42:30.25 It's amazing that the disciples did not understand until A.D. 00:42:30.28\00:42:35.05 34, that the Gospel was not just for Jews, but Jesus was meant to 00:42:35.08\00:42:39.95 save everybody because it's even in the Old Testament. 00:42:39.99\00:42:43.02 So you read in Galatians chapter 3, verse 7--I know I'm bouncing 00:42:43.06\00:42:46.90 around, trying to cover as much of this as I can. 00:42:46.93\00:42:50.60 "Therefore know that only those who are sons of Abraham--" I'll 00:42:50.63\00:42:55.74 say that again: "Therefore know that only those who are sons of 00:42:55.77\00:42:59.01 faith are sons of Abraham. 00:42:59.04\00:43:02.81 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the 00:43:02.84\00:43:05.78 Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, 00:43:05.81\00:43:09.82 saying, 'In you all the nations will be blessed.' 00:43:09.85\00:43:13.56 So then those who are of faith are blessed 00:43:13.59\00:43:16.83 with believing Abraham." 00:43:16.86\00:43:18.99 Now, Jesus made it pretty clear, John the Baptist made it clear, 00:43:19.03\00:43:24.13 "Think not to say unto yourself that we are children of Abraham, 00:43:24.17\00:43:27.67 so God has to save us." 00:43:27.70\00:43:29.57 And it's a tragedy when I encounter people--you know, I've 00:43:29.60\00:43:32.97 got a Jewish family. 00:43:33.01\00:43:34.94 Many of them are indifferent about looking for God. 00:43:34.98\00:43:37.78 They think they've got a one-way ticket to heaven 00:43:37.81\00:43:39.58 because they're Jewish. 00:43:39.61\00:43:41.32 I don't know any other way to say it. 00:43:41.35\00:43:42.72 They're very secular, but they think, "We're the chosen people, 00:43:42.75\00:43:45.35 and God's going to save us. 00:43:45.39\00:43:47.46 And our ancestors suffered so much, that we kind of go to 00:43:47.49\00:43:50.73 heaven without passing 'Go.'" 00:43:50.76\00:43:52.29 And it's really sad because the Bible is clear, Jesus said to 00:43:52.33\00:43:57.10 the religious leaders, "You're not sons of Abraham. 00:43:57.13\00:44:00.77 You're sons of your father the devil." 00:44:00.80\00:44:03.97 Children do the works of their parents, and the Bible says, 00:44:04.01\00:44:08.01 "Many will come from the east and west and sit down in the 00:44:08.04\00:44:11.25 kingdom with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and the children of the 00:44:11.28\00:44:14.72 kingdom--" meaning the natural children of the kingdom-- 00:44:14.75\00:44:17.39 "will be in outer darkness where there is weeping 00:44:17.42\00:44:19.45 and gnashing of teeth." 00:44:19.49\00:44:21.16 You and I can learn from that also because don't think to say 00:44:21.19\00:44:23.39 to yourself, "Wow, I've been in this church 00:44:23.43\00:44:24.86 for four generations." 00:44:24.89\00:44:26.26 You ever heard anyone brag about how many generations their 00:44:26.29\00:44:27.83 family's been in the church? 00:44:27.86\00:44:29.20 Huh? 00:44:29.23\00:44:30.70 Do you get extra credit for that? 00:44:30.73\00:44:33.17 No, God has no grandchildren. 00:44:33.20\00:44:36.17 Everybody must be born again. 00:44:36.20\00:44:38.97 You must be a child of God yourself. 00:44:39.01\00:44:41.54 You can't say, "Well, my dad was a preacher," and that's somehow 00:44:41.58\00:44:44.31 going to give you extra points. 00:44:44.35\00:44:46.41 It doesn't work that way. 00:44:46.45\00:44:48.28 Bible tells us that "They that believe are 00:44:48.32\00:44:53.05 the children of Abraham. 00:44:53.09\00:44:55.36 He is not a Jew which is one outwardly in the flesh, he is a 00:44:55.39\00:44:59.76 Jew which is one inwardly." 00:44:59.79\00:45:02.83 And, you know, every Jew or Gentile can be saved, but we 00:45:02.86\00:45:06.00 must all be grafted into the stock of Christ, and so this is 00:45:06.03\00:45:10.74 one of the very important teachings that we encounter. 00:45:10.77\00:45:13.94 So, the Lord saved the nation of Israel, he called Abraham, he 00:45:13.98\00:45:17.05 put him strategically in the land specifically for the 00:45:17.08\00:45:21.05 purpose of being the crossroads to the world. 00:45:21.08\00:45:26.19 I mean, you know, God couldn't put them everywhere all at once, 00:45:26.22\00:45:28.59 so he picked this humble nation, started with, wasn't a nation, 00:45:28.62\00:45:31.56 family, picked a man with no children, says, 00:45:31.59\00:45:35.56 "I'm gonna give you this land. 00:45:35.60\00:45:37.53 This land is at the intersection of Africa, Asia, and Europe, 00:45:37.57\00:45:42.77 it's a bridge," they had no airplanes back then. 00:45:42.80\00:45:45.74 And when Jesus comes to that land and the gospel explodes at 00:45:45.77\00:45:49.28 Pentecost, it's gonna be on the road--the Roman roads that had 00:45:49.31\00:45:53.75 been built that are gonna take the gospel quickly to the world 00:45:53.78\00:45:57.59 and ultimately over the oceans to every corner of the planet. 00:45:57.62\00:46:02.92 And then let me jump--I've got a couple of sections left and just 00:46:02.96\00:46:07.50 a few minutes, so let me jump over here. 00:46:07.50\00:46:11.67 And then you can hear the covenant is repeated at Sinai, 00:46:11.70\00:46:14.27 now, keep in mind, Deuteronomy covers the period from the 00:46:14.30\00:46:18.71 Exodus, it doesn't start with Genesis. 00:46:18.74\00:46:20.91 Deuteronomy covers the period following the Exodus up to the 00:46:20.94\00:46:25.15 death of Moses 40 years later, and then of course there are 00:46:25.18\00:46:28.45 prophecies about what they could expect in the future. 00:46:28.48\00:46:31.55 So, the covenant he talks about, Deuteronomy 4, he reminds them 00:46:31.59\00:46:35.52 of the repeating of the covenant at Sinai. 00:46:35.56\00:46:38.89 "Or did God every try to go and take for himself a nation from 00:46:38.93\00:46:42.30 the midst of another nation? 00:46:42.33\00:46:44.10 By trials and by signs and by wonders, by war, by a mighty 00:46:44.13\00:46:48.44 hand and an oustretched arm, by great terrors according to all 00:46:48.47\00:46:52.84 the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes." 00:46:52.87\00:46:55.54 He said, this has never happened in history before, never 00:46:55.58\00:46:57.65 happened since. 00:46:57.68\00:47:00.18 "To you it was shown that you might know that the Lord himself 00:47:00.22\00:47:04.62 is God, and there is none other besides him." 00:47:04.65\00:47:08.46 He wanted to emphasize that to him, because all the other 00:47:08.49\00:47:11.33 surrounding nations both in Egypt and when they would 00:47:11.36\00:47:15.00 ultimately go to Canaan, they believed in multiple 00:47:15.03\00:47:17.33 different gods. 00:47:17.37\00:47:19.50 Some nations had many gods like the Greeks, some had, you know, 00:47:19.53\00:47:23.30 one or two pagan gods that they worship, and he said, "Don't 00:47:23.34\00:47:27.54 forget, there's one God, he made everything, he's not just the 00:47:27.58\00:47:30.98 god of the rivers or the oceans or the birds or different 00:47:31.01\00:47:34.38 things, he's the God that made everything." 00:47:34.42\00:47:37.12 So, Moses wanted to emphasize that on them. 00:47:37.15\00:47:40.62 He said, "You see what I did to the Egyptians," and this is 00:47:40.66\00:47:44.36 under the section "Apostacy and Punishment. 00:47:44.39\00:47:47.30 He reminds them, "Don't turn from God, it doesn't end well, 00:47:47.36\00:47:52.70 there is justice with God." 00:47:52.73\00:47:55.87 You know, Paul talks about, "Behold the mercy and severity 00:47:55.90\00:48:00.04 of God," we see both, you can't really have one 00:48:00.08\00:48:03.81 without the other. 00:48:03.85\00:48:05.65 "You've seen what I did to the Egyptians and how I bore you on 00:48:05.68\00:48:08.58 eagle's wings, and I brought you to myself. 00:48:08.62\00:48:12.15 Now therefore if indeed you will obey my voice and keep my 00:48:12.19\00:48:15.32 covenant, then you will be a special treasure to me above all 00:48:15.36\00:48:20.03 people, for all the earth is mine, not just 00:48:20.06\00:48:23.97 the Promised Land." 00:48:24.00\00:48:25.47 So, God is calling his people to keep him as supreme 00:48:25.50\00:48:30.44 in their lives. 00:48:30.47\00:48:32.11 He says, "Obey me, if you love me, keep my commandments," and 00:48:32.14\00:48:35.44 Jesus is pretty clear, Matthew 5:19, "Whosoever therefore will 00:48:35.48\00:48:39.88 break one of the least of these commandments," he's talking 00:48:39.91\00:48:42.38 about the law and the prophets that Moses wrote, "and teach men 00:48:42.42\00:48:45.35 so, he will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but 00:48:45.39\00:48:49.22 whoever does them and teaches them will be called great." 00:48:49.26\00:48:52.39 Some people think that Jesus came to do away the law of 00:48:52.43\00:48:54.56 Moses, did he do that? 00:48:54.56\00:48:57.63 Did Jesus come to do away the law of Moses? 00:48:57.67\00:49:01.94 He said, "Think not that I have come to do away with the law and 00:49:01.97\00:49:06.64 the prophets, I did not come to destroy, but to fulfill." 00:49:06.68\00:49:11.15 Now, we all understand that there was a big transference, 00:49:11.18\00:49:14.05 that a lot of the ceremonial laws, Christ then fulfilled 00:49:14.08\00:49:16.38 those, but the idea that, you know, the principles of the 00:49:16.42\00:49:20.16 covenant, the foundation, and what was the foundation for the 00:49:20.19\00:49:23.09 covenant, written in stone, it's the Ten Commandments. 00:49:23.12\00:49:26.93 Jesus said, "Don't think that," and yet how many of you have 00:49:26.96\00:49:29.53 heard Christian leaders say, oh, it doesn't matter. 00:49:29.56\00:49:32.73 Isn't that sad? 00:49:32.77\00:49:34.27 Well, we are out of time, and I wanna remind our 00:50:41.30\00:50:44.34 announcer: "Amazing Facts" changed lives. 00:50:50.01\00:50:53.58 male speaker 1: I met my ex-wife, and her family were 00:50:57.85\00:51:00.32 real big into drugs, and it started out with them wanting me 00:51:00.36\00:51:03.93 to go to the doctor to help get them drugs, and, you know, I'm 00:51:03.96\00:51:07.50 noticing, they're going to the doctor, they're coming back 00:51:07.56\00:51:09.56 with, like, 60 pills, and they're selling these pills for, 00:51:09.60\00:51:12.27 like, $1,000, and I'm thinking, wow, this is a lot of money I'm 00:51:12.30\00:51:16.64 giving these people, so I'm just gonna start selling it myself. 00:51:16.67\00:51:20.04 My problem with that was that we had all this money, but we was 00:51:20.08\00:51:24.35 absolutely miserable. 00:51:24.38\00:51:26.05 She would go out and sleep with other guys to get drugs, and 00:51:26.08\00:51:30.02 that ended my marriage, but during this time I have to get a 00:51:30.05\00:51:33.76 job to build back up to where I was at to open my shop again, so 00:51:33.79\00:51:37.49 I get a job at Food City, and when I get this job at Food 00:51:37.53\00:51:40.93 City, there's my wife now, Rebecca, she's a cashier there, 00:51:40.96\00:51:45.53 and when I walk in, she's the most beautiful girl I've ever 00:51:45.57\00:51:48.14 seen in my life. 00:51:48.17\00:51:50.07 I was like, man, I could never have a girl like that, wow, 00:51:50.11\00:51:53.44 she's so beautiful. 00:51:53.48\00:51:54.88 But as I'm working with her, she's actually kind of mean to 00:51:54.91\00:51:57.58 me, and she's saying, "I don't want anything to do with you, 00:51:57.61\00:52:01.82 get away from me," but, you know, I just keeping nice to 00:52:01.85\00:52:05.09 her, and I keep trying to give her my phone number, and it's 00:52:05.12\00:52:09.16 around Christmas Eve, we'd just been dating for a little while 00:52:09.19\00:52:12.59 and moved in together, my ex-wife shows up with my three 00:52:12.63\00:52:16.26 children that I had by her, and she's like, "Here's your kids, 00:52:16.30\00:52:20.10 here's their birth certificates, here's their social security 00:52:20.14\00:52:22.27 cards, I'm done." 00:52:22.30\00:52:24.07 And we were starting a family, we have, already have 00:52:24.11\00:52:26.27 three kids. 00:52:26.31\00:52:28.04 During this time, we spent the next year watching nothing but 00:52:28.08\00:52:31.41 "Amazing Facts" on YouTube. 00:52:31.45\00:52:33.65 I didn't even know they even had a website at this time, I just 00:52:33.68\00:52:35.85 knew that this little guy on YouTube was super smart, was 00:52:35.88\00:52:39.29 teaching Bible, and I wanted to follow him, I wanted to be a 00:52:39.32\00:52:43.16 Christian, I gave my life to God now because of these truths that 00:52:43.19\00:52:46.93 I'm learning from Doug Batchelor. 00:52:46.96\00:52:49.20 Just because Doug taught it didn't make me real sure about 00:52:49.23\00:52:51.93 going to this church, I really didn't want anything to do with 00:52:51.97\00:52:54.87 it, but I call the guy up, and I'm telling him, and I'm not 00:52:54.90\00:52:58.17 very nice about it, actually, I'm telling him, "Look, we was 00:52:58.21\00:53:01.28 thinking about coming to your church," and he's really nice, 00:53:01.31\00:53:04.58 and he's like, "Well, you're more than welcome to, we'd like 00:53:04.61\00:53:07.22 to have you come." 00:53:07.25\00:53:08.68 And I'm like, "Well, hold on, I'm gonna lay down some 00:53:08.72\00:53:10.25 ground rules." 00:53:10.29\00:53:11.92 I'm telling him, I said, "Look here, I'm covered in tattoos, 00:53:11.95\00:53:14.62 and I'm a tattoo artist, and he don't say, well, you know, wow, 00:53:14.66\00:53:18.36 I didn't know all that, don't come to my church, he says, 00:53:18.39\00:53:20.63 "You're more than welcome, we would love to have you, 00:53:20.66\00:53:23.43 please come." 00:53:23.47\00:53:26.00 He asked me what I wanna do, and I said, 00:53:26.03\00:53:27.64 "Well, I want to preach." 00:53:27.67\00:53:29.77 I said, "I have all these truths, I have all this 00:53:29.80\00:53:31.97 knowledge, stuff I'd never known before, stuff, if I'd have had 00:53:32.01\00:53:35.41 when I was younger, that would've been life 00:53:35.44\00:53:37.05 changing to me." 00:53:37.08\00:53:39.11 I said, "I got to share this with the world." 00:53:39.15\00:53:41.82 I said, "I wanna preach, I wanna teach," he gives me the Book, 00:53:41.85\00:53:45.32 says, "Study that." 00:53:45.35\00:53:46.76 Well, now that I'm a Bible worker, I'm able to go reach 00:53:46.79\00:53:48.92 people that most of the normal churches wouldn't even bother 00:53:48.96\00:53:52.79 to even speak to. 00:53:52.83\00:53:54.40 I'm able to out and reach to people to who have lived the 00:53:54.46\00:53:57.47 life that I've lived, I'm able to let them know that I am like 00:53:57.50\00:54:01.64 you, I've been there, I've done that. 00:54:01.67\00:54:04.04 I wanna show you what my life is like now, I wanna teach you this 00:54:04.07\00:54:08.28 Bible, I wanna show you what Jesus can do for you, 00:54:08.31\00:54:11.65 it's not too late. 00:54:11.68\00:54:13.85 ¤¤¤ 00:54:15.75\00:54:22.92 Andrew: When I was eight years old, 00:54:32.70\00:54:34.30 I brought home a 5 foot rattlesnake, and it's gone 00:54:34.34\00:54:37.34 downhill ever since. 00:54:37.37\00:54:38.71 Rattlesnakes, sharks, cliff diving, free diving. 00:54:38.74\00:54:42.31 I wouldn't call myself an adrenaline junkie, I just 00:54:42.34\00:54:44.25 realize that the closest that I've ever been to being alive is 00:54:44.28\00:54:48.58 when I'm so close to death. 00:54:48.62\00:54:50.69 I was raised in the northern mountains of Mexico. 00:54:50.72\00:54:54.09 I learned English because there was missionary groups that were 00:54:54.12\00:54:56.46 coming from Colorado and then going to the northern mountains 00:54:56.49\00:54:59.09 of Mexico, and they were all changed, in these short term 00:54:59.13\00:55:03.53 mission trips, and they had these unbelievable experiences 00:55:03.57\00:55:06.87 and their close encounters with God, and I would share their 00:55:06.90\00:55:09.97 testimony. 00:55:10.01\00:55:11.31 I'd translate for them, and I was jealous, I was jealous 00:55:11.34\00:55:15.91 because I didn't have a testimony, I didn't have 00:55:15.94\00:55:19.85 something like that, I didn't have that life changing 00:55:19.88\00:55:21.92 experience, that close encounter with God. 00:55:21.95\00:55:25.52 I knew he was there, I just--I couldn't understand him, and I 00:55:25.55\00:55:30.09 didn't really want anything to do with him, and part of me 00:55:30.13\00:55:34.36 wanted him not to want anything to do with me. 00:55:34.36\00:55:37.63 I felt like I was unworthy of God's love. 00:55:37.67\00:55:41.87 I left Mexico to come to college. 00:55:41.90\00:55:46.47 Once I got to college, I realized how expensive college 00:55:46.51\00:55:48.68 was, and so in order to pay for college I became a commercial 00:55:48.71\00:55:53.55 salmon fisherman in Alaska, and the first time that I stepped on 00:55:53.58\00:55:57.15 a boat, I knew I was gonna be a fisherman for the rest 00:55:57.19\00:55:59.52 of my life. 00:55:59.55\00:56:01.92 I met this man in Tennessee in one of the rivers, and I found 00:56:01.96\00:56:05.19 out that he had an orphanage in Honduras. 00:56:05.23\00:56:08.30 And he said, you know, "You can come down to Honduras, you can 00:56:08.33\00:56:10.73 help us put a support video together." 00:56:10.77\00:56:13.17 And, you know, it's like, "Maybe you can get some 00:56:13.20\00:56:15.87 college credits out of it." 00:56:15.90\00:56:17.47 I said, "You know, that would be great, I would do that, I would 00:56:17.51\00:56:19.21 love to do that." 00:56:19.24\00:56:20.61 And so, I flew down to Honduras, and one of the conversations 00:56:20.64\00:56:23.81 that we had during dinner, we were talking about this and 00:56:23.85\00:56:27.28 that, and somehow I brought up rapture, and they said, "Well, 00:56:27.32\00:56:30.79 find us a place in Scripture where it talks about rapture," 00:56:30.82\00:56:33.99 and I said, "It's all over the Bible," and they said, "Is it, 00:56:34.02\00:56:37.09 really though?" 00:56:37.13\00:56:38.46 So, they gave me a DVD that said "Amazing Facts," and I remember 00:56:38.49\00:56:41.00 coming back to America and I started watching, and it said, 00:56:41.03\00:56:45.60 "Amazing Facts" presents, and Doug Batchelor started talking. 00:56:45.63\00:56:49.87 One of the things that he said is that the word rapture wasn't 00:56:49.90\00:56:52.44 in Scripture, and that was the first time that I actually heard 00:56:52.47\00:56:56.21 Pastor Batchelor speak. 00:56:56.24\00:56:58.55 And then I run into YouTube, a video series called, "Prophecy 00:56:58.58\00:57:04.49 Code," and I said, "Oh, this is gonna be good, sweet," but it 00:57:04.52\00:57:09.82 was just torture, because everything I knew was just 00:57:09.86\00:57:12.99 getting tossed out the window. 00:57:13.03\00:57:14.96 He was just using Scripture after Scripture to take away 00:57:15.00\00:57:20.80 everything and all--everything that I thought was normal and 00:57:20.84\00:57:23.34 everything that I knew about the Book of Apocalipsis. 00:57:23.37\00:57:28.18 Ever since I've learned Scriptural truth and I've seen 00:57:28.21\00:57:30.25 the light, I feel like there's been a fire rekindled in my 00:57:30.28\00:57:34.35 heart, and I have this knowledge that I wanna share with people. 00:57:34.38\00:57:39.52 It brings me peace, and I think that it does that for other 00:57:39.55\00:57:43.79 people we've managed to share with. 00:57:43.83\00:57:47.10 My name is Andrew, I am a fisherman and a dreamer, I want 00:57:47.13\00:57:51.73 to thank you for changing my life. 00:57:51.77\00:57:55.50 ¤¤¤ 00:57:57.84\00:58:01.94 ¤¤¤ 00:58:03.31\00:58:13.32 ¤¤¤ 00:58:21.06\00:58:25.43
