a word of prayer.

This morning, I want to
talk to you about types,
00:03:06.78\00:03:13.36
shadows, symbols, patterns,
00:03:13.39\00:03:20.56
models, and examples.
00:03:20.60\00:03:24.33
Those are all words that are
used to describe the things that
00:03:24.37\00:03:28.90
are happening in the Old
Testament that are pointing to a
00:03:28.94\00:03:34.11
greater reality
in the New Testament.
00:03:34.14\00:03:38.38
In the book of John,
it tells us that the Jews
00:03:38.41\00:03:42.82
were persecuting Jesus.
00:03:42.85\00:03:47.49
They were
giving Him a hard time.
00:03:47.52\00:03:50.09
And it shows us there were
two very important reasons.
00:03:50.13\00:03:53.36
The first was because
He was doing some things
00:03:53.40\00:03:57.97
on the Sabbath
that they didn't like.
00:03:58.00\00:04:00.27
It wasn't that He was breaking
the commandments of God,
00:04:00.30\00:04:03.47
it was that He was breaking
their rules and traditions that
00:04:03.51\00:04:06.84
they had added
to the law of God.
00:04:06.88\00:04:10.85
And He also was claiming to
be equal with the Father, and so
00:04:10.88\00:04:15.15
they were persecuting Him.
00:04:15.18\00:04:16.85
And as a result of that, you
have your Bibles open to John
00:04:16.89\00:04:20.09
chapter 5, in verse
39, Jesus said to them,
00:04:20.12\00:04:25.13
"You search the Scriptures daily
because in them you think you
00:04:25.16\00:04:30.63
have life but these are
they that testify of Me."
00:04:30.67\00:04:35.57
Now, let me say it just
a little bit different way.
00:04:35.60\00:04:40.48
Jesus was hidden in
the Old Testament but He
00:04:40.51\00:04:46.05
is revealed in
the New Testament.
00:04:46.08\00:04:49.28
In other words, Jesus was
hidden behind all of the types,
00:04:49.32\00:04:54.32
the patterns, the
symbols, the shadows,
00:04:54.36\00:04:57.13
the models, the examples.
00:04:57.16\00:04:58.99
He was hidden behind all of
those things, but all of those
00:04:59.03\00:05:02.90
things were brought
out and brought to light
00:05:02.93\00:05:06.20
in the New Testament.
00:05:06.23\00:05:09.97
I want to give to you this
morning a definition of a type.
00:05:10.01\00:05:15.11
This is a biblical definition.
00:05:15.14\00:05:17.35
A type is a divinely
purposed illustration of truth.
00:05:17.38\00:05:24.32
Now, let me pause for a moment
and let that just sink in.
00:05:24.35\00:05:27.49
A type is a divinely
purposed illustration of truth.

And there are a lot of these
divinely purposed illustrations
00:05:33.60\00:05:38.47
that God gives to point to a
greater reality, and so there's
00:05:38.50\00:05:42.87
a lot of ways that He did this.
00:05:42.90\00:05:44.81
There--one way is that
a type can be a person.
00:05:44.84\00:05:51.01
If you do a study of
Joseph, you will discover that
00:05:51.05\00:05:55.75
he was a type of Christ.
00:05:55.78\00:05:58.39
The Bible also tells us
that Adam was a type of Christ.
00:05:58.42\00:06:02.32
In fact, in Romans
chapter 5, verse 14,
00:06:02.36\00:06:04.53
it says this: "Nevertheless,
death reigned from Adam to
00:06:04.56\00:06:08.80
Moses, even over those who
had not sinned according to the
00:06:08.83\00:06:13.00
likeness of the
transgression of Adam,
00:06:13.03\00:06:15.37
who was a type of
Him who was to come."
00:06:15.40\00:06:19.57
And so here we see
Adam was a type of Christ.
00:06:19.61\00:06:24.01
He's the type but
Christ is the anti-type.
00:06:24.05\00:06:28.28
And he was
pointing us to Christ.
00:06:28.32\00:06:32.99
And so a type can be a person.
00:06:33.02\00:06:35.26
A type can also be an event.
00:06:35.29\00:06:39.63
In 1 Corinthians chapter 10,
the apostle Paul says that the
00:06:39.66\00:06:44.10
Israelites in their
wilderness wanderings,
00:06:44.13\00:06:47.67
they were under the cloud,
they passed through the sea,
00:06:47.70\00:06:52.94
they were baptized into
Moses, they ate spiritual food,
00:06:52.97\00:06:57.81
and they drank spiritual drink.
00:06:57.85\00:06:59.81
Those were all events
that were pointing forward
00:06:59.85\00:07:04.09
to a greater reality.
00:07:04.12\00:07:06.82
And so a type can be a
person, it can be an event,
00:07:06.86\00:07:10.99
it can also be a thing.
00:07:11.03\00:07:14.96
In Hebrews chapter
10, verse 19 and 20,
00:07:15.00\00:07:17.57
it says: "Therefore, brethren,
having boldness to enter the
00:07:17.60\00:07:20.37
Holiest by the blood of Jesus,
by a new and living way which He
00:07:20.40\00:07:24.71
consecrated for us, through
the veil, that is, His flesh."
00:07:24.74\00:07:29.98
Here we see that the veil is
a thing, and it is the curtain
00:07:30.01\00:07:36.18
that separated the holy
from the Most Holy Place, right?
00:07:36.22\00:07:39.72
But it tells us that the veil
symbolized, it was a pattern,
00:07:39.75\00:07:44.69
it was as--it was a
type of the flesh of Christ.
00:07:44.73\00:07:49.60
You'll remember that
Jesus said, "I am the way,
00:07:49.63\00:07:53.44
the truth, and the life," right?
00:07:53.47\00:07:54.84
You had to go through the
curtain to get into the Most
00:07:54.87\00:07:58.71
Holy Place, just
like you've got to go
00:07:58.74\00:08:00.68
through Christ to get to heaven.
00:08:00.71\00:08:02.01
So it was pointing
to a greater reality.
00:08:02.04\00:08:06.45
And so, a type can be
a person, it can be an
00:08:06.48\00:08:08.98
event, it can be a thing.
00:08:09.02\00:08:10.92
It could also be an institution.
00:08:10.95\00:08:14.56
God had instituted the
sacrificial system, and notice
00:08:14.59\00:08:18.63
what it says in Hebrews 9, verse
11 and 12: "But Christ came as
00:08:18.66\00:08:24.60
High Priest of the
good things to come,
00:08:24.63\00:08:27.17
with the greater and more
perfect tabernacle not made with
00:08:27.20\00:08:30.84
hands, that is,
not of this creation.
00:08:30.87\00:08:33.48
Not with the blood
of goats and calves,
00:08:33.51\00:08:35.28
but with His own blood He
entered the Most Holy Place once
00:08:35.31\00:08:38.58
and for all, having
obtained eternal redemption."
00:08:38.61\00:08:42.58
The Jewish economy was built
around the sacrificial system.
00:08:42.62\00:08:47.79
It was an institution, and it
was all designed to be a type.
00:08:47.82\00:08:52.86
It was pointing us from that
earthly tabernacle to a greater
00:08:52.89\00:08:58.17
tabernacle, the heavenly, and
it was pointing us from those
00:08:58.20\00:09:02.27
priests who offered the
sacrifices in that system to the
00:09:02.30\00:09:07.08
greater priest, Jesus
Christ, our high priest,
00:09:07.11\00:09:10.75
in that heavenly temple.
00:09:10.78\00:09:12.95
And so a type can be a
person, it can be an event,
00:09:12.98\00:09:15.38
it can be a thing, it
can be an institution.
00:09:15.42\00:09:18.32
It can also be
ceremonial in nature.
00:09:18.35\00:09:21.26
In 1 Corinthians
chapter 5, verse 7,
00:09:21.29\00:09:23.43
it says: "Therefore
purge out the old leaven,
00:09:23.46\00:09:26.23
that you may be a new lump,
since you truly are unleavened.
00:09:26.26\00:09:30.83
For indeed Christ, our Passover,
was sacrificed for us."
00:09:30.87\00:09:35.77
So you'll remember that in the
Old Testament there were five
00:09:35.80\00:09:39.27
festivals that the
Jews kept every year,
00:09:39.31\00:09:42.58
and one of those
was the Passover.
00:09:42.61\00:09:44.61
And it was a ceremony that they
had every year to remind them of
00:09:44.65\00:09:50.62
God bringing
them out of bondage.
00:09:50.65\00:09:52.99
But we see here that it was
pointing us not to those lambs
00:09:53.02\00:09:57.36
that were sacrificed
every day, but rather,
00:09:57.39\00:10:00.43
it was pointing us
to a greater sacrifice.
00:10:00.46\00:10:03.53
It was pointing us to the
Lamb of God that would take
00:10:03.57\00:10:07.27
away the sins of the world.
00:10:07.30\00:10:10.27
In other words, Jesus
was hidden in the types,
00:10:10.31\00:10:14.58
in the shadows, in the
patterns, in the symbols,
00:10:14.61\00:10:17.55
in the models,
and in the examples.
00:10:17.58\00:10:20.72
And that's why Jesus
could say, in John chapter 5,
00:10:20.75\00:10:24.22
verse 39, "You search the
Scriptures daily because you
00:10:24.25\00:10:27.56
think in them
that you have life,
00:10:27.59\00:10:29.19
but they testify of Me."
00:10:29.22\00:10:32.96
So, let's look at a couple
of scriptural examples of this.
00:10:32.99\00:10:37.37
Turn with me in your
Bibles to Hebrews chapter 10.
00:10:37.40\00:10:41.50
Hebrews chapter 10, and I've
got to move along quickly, so
00:10:41.54\00:10:46.37
forgive me if I
get ahead of you.
00:10:46.41\00:10:48.18
Hebrews chapter 10,
look with me in verse 1.
00:10:48.21\00:10:52.75
The apostle Paul
says to the Hebrews,
00:10:52.78\00:10:54.85
he's saying to us, "For the
law, having a shadow of the good
00:10:54.88\00:11:00.86
things to come, and not
the very image of the things,
00:11:00.89\00:11:05.23
can never with these same
sacrifices which they offer
00:11:05.26\00:11:08.73
continually, year by year, make
00:11:08.76\00:11:11.00
those who approach perfect."
00:11:11.03\00:11:13.10
What's Paul saying here?
00:11:13.13\00:11:14.87
He's simply saying that all
of those sacrifices that were
00:11:14.90\00:11:19.11
accomplished day
after day, year after year,
00:11:19.14\00:11:22.41
they couldn't save anyone.
00:11:22.44\00:11:25.61
They were simply a type
pointing to the One who could.
00:11:25.65\00:11:31.02
They're pointing to the Lamb
of God that was slain from the
00:11:31.05\00:11:35.52
foundations of the world.
00:11:35.56\00:11:37.96
And so he's saying,
simply, those things were a type
00:11:37.99\00:11:41.60
pointing to a greater reality.
00:11:41.63\00:11:44.50

Go to Hebrews
chapter 8 and look with me,
00:11:46.00\00:11:48.50
starting in verse 4.
00:11:48.54\00:11:51.37
The Bible says: "For
if He were on earth,"
00:11:51.41\00:11:54.71
that's talking about Jesus.
00:11:54.74\00:11:56.91
"If He were on earth,
He would not be a priest,
00:11:56.95\00:12:00.48
since there are priests who
offer the gifts according to the
00:12:00.52\00:12:03.15
law; who serve the copy and
shadow of the heavenly things,
00:12:03.18\00:12:08.79
as Moses was divinely
instructed when he was
00:12:08.82\00:12:11.39
about to make the tabernacle.
00:12:11.43\00:12:12.99
For He said, 'See that you
make all things according to the
00:12:13.03\00:12:15.76
pattern shown
you on the mountain.'
00:12:15.80\00:12:18.07
But now He has obtained
a more excellent ministry,
00:12:18.10\00:12:21.44
inasmuch as He also was the
Mediator of a better covenant,
00:12:21.47\00:12:24.91
which was
established on better promises."
00:12:24.94\00:12:27.61
So here we see Paul telling
us once again that earthly
00:12:27.64\00:12:31.71
tabernacle was
pointing to a greater reality,
00:12:31.75\00:12:34.65
and those priests were
pointing to a greater reality,
00:12:34.68\00:12:38.35
and that is Christ.
00:12:38.39\00:12:40.06
He is the Anti-type.
00:12:40.09\00:12:42.06
He's the One that all
of those were pointing to.
00:12:42.09\00:12:44.76
But if He were here on
earth, He could not be a priest.
00:12:44.79\00:12:48.06
Why?
00:12:48.10\00:12:49.40
Because the Levitical law
required that they be Levites
00:12:49.43\00:12:53.10
and He was from
the tribe of Judah.
00:12:53.13\00:12:55.64
And so, it wasn't pointing
to them, but they were pointing
00:12:55.67\00:13:00.68
to a greater
ministry, and He came after the
00:13:00.71\00:13:04.25
order of Melchizedek,
a higher priesthood.
00:13:04.28\00:13:07.45
And so they were
pointing to those things.
00:13:07.48\00:13:11.42
Now, let me just
point you to another one.
00:13:11.45\00:13:14.12
You don't need to go
there but just listen
00:13:14.16\00:13:16.69
to 1 Timothy
chapter 1, verse 16.
00:13:16.73\00:13:19.46
Paul says, "However, for
this reason I obtained mercy,
00:13:19.49\00:13:24.57
that in me first Jesus Christ
might show all longsuffering,
00:13:24.60\00:13:29.84
as a pattern to those
who are going to believe
00:13:29.87\00:13:34.21
on Him for everlasting life."
00:13:34.24\00:13:36.64
What's Paul saying here?
00:13:36.68\00:13:38.35
He's simply
saying, "I'm a blasphemer.
00:13:38.38\00:13:41.92
I'm a murderer."
00:13:41.95\00:13:43.62
In one place, he says, "I am the
worst of all sinners," right?
00:13:43.65\00:13:47.99
But he says, "I'm a
pattern, I'm a type of those
00:13:48.02\00:13:51.63
who were going to be saved."
00:13:51.66\00:13:53.09
And who is
that? Everyone, right?
00:13:53.13\00:13:56.30
No one is beyond
the reach of God.
00:13:56.33\00:13:59.13
Paul says, "I'm the
worst and if I can be saved,
00:13:59.17\00:14:02.20
you can be saved too."
00:14:02.24\00:14:03.61
We must surrender our
hearts to him and allow him to
00:14:03.64\00:14:07.94
do in us those things
that we can't do in ourself.
00:14:07.98\00:14:12.01
In Colossians
chapter 2, verse 16 and 17,
00:14:12.05\00:14:14.75
it says: "So let no one
judge you in food or drink or
00:14:14.78\00:14:17.82
regarding a festival or a
new moon or Sabbaths which are a
00:14:17.85\00:14:21.66
shadow of the things to come
but the substance is of Christ."
00:14:21.69\00:14:26.86
Here, once again, Paul is saying
that ceremonial service where
00:14:26.90\00:14:31.53
oftentimes the priests ate and
they drank of the sacrifices or
00:14:31.57\00:14:36.17
the offerings that
were given, he says those
00:14:36.20\00:14:38.87
things were a shadow.
00:14:38.91\00:14:41.11
Those things were a type.
00:14:41.14\00:14:43.31
And he also adds in there, the
new moons and the Sabbath and
00:14:43.35\00:14:46.72
the festivities, those five
festivals that they celebrated
00:14:46.75\00:14:51.05
every year, often they had a
Sabbath associated with them.
00:14:51.09\00:14:55.59
And so there was
sometimes a Sabbath
00:14:55.62\00:14:58.53
rest in the middle of the week.
00:14:58.56\00:14:59.86
So this is not talking about
the weekly seventh-day Sabbath,
00:14:59.89\00:15:03.83
but it is talking
about those festivals.
00:15:03.87\00:15:06.74
And he says,
"Those things are shadows
00:15:06.77\00:15:09.47
of a better thing to come.
00:15:09.50\00:15:11.04
And so, that's why we
don't keep those anymore because
00:15:11.07\00:15:14.94
those things were fulfilled.
00:15:14.98\00:15:16.51
They were
shadows, they were types
00:15:16.54\00:15:19.81
that were pointing
to something greater.
00:15:19.85\00:15:21.68
And that's why in 1
Corinthians chapter 10,
00:15:21.72\00:15:24.22
verse 11, Paul says, "All of
these things happened to them as
00:15:24.25\00:15:29.26
examples and they were written
for our admonition upon which
00:15:29.29\00:15:33.60
the ends of the ages have come."
00:15:33.63\00:15:35.63
So let's think
about this for a minute.
00:15:35.66\00:15:38.47
The Old Testament saints
couldn't understand how a
00:15:38.50\00:15:44.51
reigning Messiah could also
suffer the ignominious death
00:15:44.54\00:15:50.41
that Isaiah and
others were pointing to.
00:15:50.45\00:15:54.65
And so, they couldn't get it.
00:15:54.68\00:15:58.82
They couldn't understand it.
00:15:58.85\00:16:00.22
And they couldn't understand
the significance of that death.
00:16:00.26\00:16:04.26
Let me give you
an example of this.
00:16:04.29\00:16:06.90
You remember when Jesus was
walking with His disciples and
00:16:06.93\00:16:11.33
He said to them, "Who
do people say that I am?"
00:16:11.37\00:16:13.80
And they said,
"Elijah," and "Moses," and,
00:16:13.84\00:16:18.31
you know, "the
prophet who was to come."
00:16:18.34\00:16:20.48
But Jesus said to
them, "Who do you say I am?"
00:16:20.51\00:16:23.51
And you'll
remember what Peter said.
00:16:23.55\00:16:25.55
Peter said, "You are the Christ,
the Son of the living God."
00:16:25.58\00:16:29.58
And Jesus said to
him, "Blessed are you,
00:16:29.62\00:16:31.95
Simon Bar-Jonah, because flesh
and blood did not reveal this to
00:16:31.99\00:16:35.69
you, but My Father in heaven."
00:16:35.72\00:16:37.23
He's essentially saying,
"Peter, you've got it right."
00:16:37.26\00:16:39.93
But then you'll
remember that right after that,
00:16:39.96\00:16:42.83
Jesus told him that He
was going to be crucified.
00:16:42.86\00:16:46.27
And you
remember what Peter said?
00:16:46.30\00:16:48.57
"Oh, no, not You, Lord.
00:16:48.60\00:16:50.67
We won't let
that happen," right?
00:16:50.71\00:16:53.11
And you'll remember
what Jesus said to him:
00:16:53.14\00:16:55.11
"Get behind Me, Satan.
00:16:55.14\00:16:56.44
You don't have the
things of God in mind."
00:16:56.48\00:16:58.11
Peter couldn't wrap his mind
around how the King of kings
00:16:58.15\00:17:03.22
and Lord of lords
could be sacrificed.
00:17:03.25\00:17:06.09
He couldn't see it.
00:17:06.12\00:17:08.79
You see, they had the
Levitical law of sacrifices,
00:17:08.82\00:17:13.26
but they didn't realize that
all of those sacrifices were a
00:17:13.29\00:17:17.53
shadow of
something greater to come,
00:17:17.57\00:17:21.27
of a greater
sacrifice that God had intended.
00:17:21.30\00:17:25.11
But you and I today, in
the light that is shed upon the
00:17:25.14\00:17:30.35
cross, we can understand much
more clearly what those Jewish
00:17:30.38\00:17:36.52
sacrifices meant,
what they were pointing to.
00:17:36.55\00:17:40.96
So let me see if I can
try and explain this to you.
00:17:40.99\00:17:45.63
This lectern is here, and I want
you to imagine for a moment that
00:17:45.66\00:17:50.73
there is light
shining on it from here.
00:17:50.77\00:17:54.17
But if I am standing over here,
then I am standing in the shadow
00:17:54.20\00:17:59.81
of the lectern, right?
00:17:59.84\00:18:01.24
And as I look at the shadow and
I'm trying to figure out what is
00:18:01.28\00:18:06.78
that a shadow of,
what does that mean,
00:18:06.82\00:18:09.48
as I'm looking at the
lectern, it's dark and dim.
00:18:09.52\00:18:12.89
I can't tell exactly what it is.
00:18:12.92\00:18:15.16
But if I come over here,
and I look at it from the light,
00:18:15.19\00:18:20.13
I can look at it
and I can say, "Oh,
00:18:20.16\00:18:21.76
I can see all the details.
00:18:21.80\00:18:23.10
That's a lectern."
00:18:23.13\00:18:24.43
And now, when I go back
and I look at the shadow,
00:18:24.47\00:18:27.44
now I can understand,
"Oh, that's what--that's
00:18:27.47\00:18:31.07
what that is."
00:18:31.11\00:18:32.41
But the Old
Testament Christians,
00:18:32.44\00:18:34.91
they didn't have
that perspective.
00:18:34.94\00:18:37.31
They were looking at it
in the shadow of the cross,
00:18:37.35\00:18:41.92
and so they couldn't understand
it like we could today.
00:18:41.95\00:18:46.79
Well, by now, friends, there
might be someone here who's
00:18:46.82\00:18:50.13
thinking to
themselves, "That's great,
00:18:50.16\00:18:51.89
Pastor Rod, but what does that
have to do with rest in Christ,
00:18:51.93\00:18:56.53
because that's what our study
is about this quarter," right?

this: all of these things were

models, of something greater,

represented something physical,

but they also
represented something

spiritual, something better.

And that's how models work.

A model is not the original.

It is a shadow, it is a pattern.

But it functions as a
symbol of the original.

A model helps us
grasp the essence of the

original but it
cannot replace it.

Rather, it is there to help
us to understand the original.

So as Scripture is full of
these miniature models and these

activities and these
people and these institutions,

all of these things are pointing
to a greater heavenly reality,

and the reality is that the rest
that is being spoken of in the
00:20:16.34\00:20:22.22
Old Testament is a type pointing
to a greater rest that's going
00:20:22.25\00:20:27.86
to be revealed in
the New Testament.

So let's take a look at it.

Bibles to Exodus chapter 33.

Second book of the
Bible, Exodus, chapter 33.

And I want you to notice
what it says in verse 14.

The Bible says,
"And He," that is Jesus,
00:20:49.71\00:20:51.75
"said, 'My presence will go
with you and I will do,'" what?
00:20:51.78\00:20:59.52
"I will give you rest."
00:20:59.55\00:21:02.56
Now, let's put this in
the proper perspective.

God was bringing the children of
Israel out of Egyptian bondage,

and He had given them a land.

It was the land of Canaan.

It's referred to as what?

As the Promised
Land, right? Why?

Because God
promised to give it to them.

And now we see in this passage
that God is not only going to

give them the physical land of
Israel over there in the Middle

East, but He also wants
to give them physical rest.

But these things are types
pointing to something greater.

Now, let's go to
Numbers chapter 14.

You're in Exodus, go through
Leviticus and then into Numbers,

and we're going to
look at chapter 14,

and I want you to notice
what it says in verse 34.

It says, "According to the
number of the days in which you
00:22:01.55\00:22:04.72
spied out the land, 40 days,
for each day you shall bear your
00:22:04.75\00:22:08.29
guilt one year,
namely 40 years, and you
00:22:08.32\00:22:12.33
shall know My rejection."

Now, let's put this in
the proper perspective.

God is bringing the children
out of Egyptian bondage.

He's bringing them
to the Promised Land,

the land that He
promised to give them,

that He can give them the
rest that He promised them.

They come to the borders of
Canaan, and Moses sends 12 spies

into the land, and you'll
remember there were 10 spies
00:22:36.48\00:22:39.45
that came back and
they gave a bad report.
00:22:39.49\00:22:43.83
They said,
essentially, "It's rugged,
00:22:43.86\00:22:47.60
there are fortifications,
there are giants in the land.
00:22:47.60\00:22:51.97
We are like
grasshoppers in their sight.
00:22:52.00\00:22:54.07
We can't do it."

You remember that, right?

Now, I want you to
put yourself in the place

of God for a moment.

Imagine God as He is listening
to this report that's being

given and they're
saying, "We can't do it."

I imagine God, at
least in His mind,

in His--and in
His heart, saying,

"But I promised
to give it to you.
00:23:17.19\00:23:20.33
I promised to give you the land.
00:23:20.36\00:23:22.66
I promised to give you rest."

But then, notice the
last part of verse 34.

He says, "And you
shall know My rejection."

That's the way it says
it in the New King James.

But I really like the way
it says it in the King James.

He says, "And you shall
know My breach of promise."

That word "breach" is
a verb meaning to hinder,

frustrate, or restrain, and
it can also be translated as

disallow, discourage,
or make of no effect.

And I want to focus
on that last definition.

To breach is to
make of no effect.

So what's God saying?

He's saying I want you to
know, I want you to understand,

what it means to make
of no effect My promise.

You see, God didn't
take away His promise,

but rather, He said, "I want you
to understand what you've done.

The children of Israel had
alienated themselves from God

and they were in opposition to
God and in order that they might

learn to cooperate with God,
He ordained that they should

experience opposition, that
they should have their plans

frustrated, and so He says, "You
are going to go back out into

the wilderness and you're going
to learn what it means to make

of no effect My promise."

Now, I want to show this to you,

Hebrews chapter 3, and I want
you to know what the apostle

Paul says to us
starting in verse 7.

He says, "Therefore, as
the Holy Spirit says: 'Today,

if you will hear His voice, do
not harden your hearts as in the

rebellion, in the day of
the trial in the wilderness,

where your fathers
tested Me, tried Me,

and saw My works 40 years.

Therefore I was
angry with that generation,

and said, "They always
go astray in their heart,

and they have
not known My ways."

So I swore in My wrath

Because they didn't put
their trust in God, He was not

going to take them into
the land that He had promised.

He was not going to give
them the rest that He promised.

That's the physical rest.

And if they didn't
receive the physical rest,

then they wouldn't
receive the anti-type,

that spiritual rest
that God had intended.

Look with me, here,
still in chapter 3 of Hebrews,

verse 16: "For who,
having heard, rebelled?

Indeed, was it not all who
came out of Egypt, led by Moses?
00:26:24.31\00:26:28.45
Now with whom was
He angry 40 years?
00:26:28.48\00:26:31.49
Was it not with
those who sinned,
00:26:31.52\00:26:33.36
whose corpses
fell in the wilderness?
00:26:33.39\00:26:35.46
And to whom did He swear that
they would not enter His rest,
00:26:35.49\00:26:39.43
but to those who did not obey?
00:26:39.46\00:26:41.60
So we see that they could not
enter in because of unbelief."

It was because
they didn't have faith.

They didn't trust God.

God promised, "I'm
going to give you the land.

I'm going to give you rest," but
because they didn't trust Him,

they were looking
to their own abilities,

their own power, and
they said, "We can't do it."
00:27:02.88\00:27:06.55
And so they were not allowed
to go into the land that God had
00:27:06.59\00:27:12.23
promised and the rest
that God had promised.
00:27:12.26\00:27:15.30
But those were
just the physical,
00:27:15.33\00:27:17.87
those were just the type, that
were pointing to something else.
00:27:17.90\00:27:21.74
And so they couldn't
enter into that either.

But you do remember that
40 years later, that Joshua
00:27:24.61\00:27:30.48
did take the children of
Israel into the land, didn't he?
00:27:30.51\00:27:34.12
He took them in and so they were
given the physical land and they
00:27:34.15\00:27:39.02
were given physical rest,
but God couldn't give them the
00:27:39.05\00:27:44.96
spiritual rest that He intended
00:27:44.99\00:27:47.96
because there
was still unbelief.
00:27:48.00\00:27:49.90
And you'll remember that there
were times when they fell into
00:27:49.93\00:27:52.97
apostasy and God had to allow
their enemies to come in and
00:27:53.00\00:27:57.21
harass them, so they couldn't
have that spiritual rest.
00:27:57.24\00:28:01.44
Now, look with me in this.
00:28:01.48\00:28:03.48
Go to chapter 4 of Hebrews
and look at starting in verse 1:
00:28:03.51\00:28:08.18
"Therefore, since a promise
remains of entering His rest,
00:28:08.22\00:28:11.92
lest--let us
fear lest any of you
00:28:11.95\00:28:14.06
seem to have come short of it.
00:28:14.09\00:28:16.06
For indeed the gospel was
preached to us as well as to
00:28:16.09\00:28:19.13
them; but the word which
they heard did not profit them,

not being mixed with
faith in those who heard it.

For we who have
believed do enter that rest,

as He has said: 'So
I swore in My wrath,

"They shall not enter My rest,"'
although the works were finished

For He has spoken in a certain
place of the seventh day in this

way: 'And God rested on
the seventh day from all of His

works'; and again in this place:
'They shall not enter My rest.'"

So here we see that they were
not able to totally enter into

the rest that
God had offered them.

Yes, they went
into the physical land,
00:29:00.24\00:29:02.27
yes, they went
into physical rest,
00:29:02.30\00:29:04.47
at least for a time, but
they couldn't enter into the
00:29:04.51\00:29:07.78
spiritual rest that God
was trying to lead them into.
00:29:07.81\00:29:13.01
And notice verse 6 and 7: "Since
therefore it remains that some
00:29:13.05\00:29:18.82
must enter it, and those to whom
it was first preached did not
00:29:18.85\00:29:23.96
enter because of disobedience,
again He designates a certain
00:29:23.99\00:29:27.93
day, saying in David,
'Today,' after such a long time,
00:29:27.96\00:29:32.43
as it has been seen: 'Today,
if you will hear His voice,
00:29:32.47\00:29:34.84
do not harden your hearts.'"
00:29:34.87\00:29:37.04
Here we see that in the days
of David, God once again renewed
00:29:37.07\00:29:43.88
His invitation to the nation
of Israel to enter into that
00:29:43.91\00:29:49.38
spiritual rest
that He had promised.
00:29:49.42\00:29:52.09
And why is it still available,
even in spite of the failures of
00:29:52.12\00:29:57.86
the nation of Israel?
00:29:57.89\00:29:59.59
Simply this:
because God said it.
00:29:59.63\00:30:02.50
And God is not a liar, right?
00:30:02.53\00:30:05.33
And those things were just types
pointing to a greater reality.
00:30:05.37\00:30:09.37
And so there was
still a spiritual
00:30:09.40\00:30:11.51
rest to be entered into.
00:30:11.54\00:30:13.84
And He invites
David and that--the people
00:30:13.88\00:30:17.01
of that time, to enter in.
00:30:17.05\00:30:18.71
Notice verse 8: "For if
Joshua had given them rest,
00:30:18.75\00:30:23.18
then He would not afterwards
have spoken of another day."
00:30:23.22\00:30:26.76
So here we see, it wasn't just
a physical rest that God was
00:30:26.79\00:30:31.26
promising, but He was promising
a spiritual rest, and the nation
00:30:31.29\00:30:36.13
of Israel had still
not entered into it.
00:30:36.16\00:30:39.47
Look at verse 9: "There
remains therefore a rest
00:30:39.50\00:30:44.81
for the people of God."
00:30:44.84\00:30:46.14
Let me say it another
way: "There remains therefore a
00:30:46.17\00:30:50.78
Sabbath rest for
the people of God."
00:30:50.81\00:30:55.05
In spite of Israel's failure,
the invitation was still there
00:30:55.08\00:31:01.29
because God is eternal.
00:31:01.32\00:31:03.76
God, when He sets
something in motion,
00:31:03.79\00:31:07.03
He doesn't retract it.
00:31:07.10\00:31:08.36
He--it's still
available to everyone today.

And so, since God's people
have not entered into that rest,

it therefore is
evident that that rest

remains still available.

Let's take a look at
it. Couple of verses here.

Go with me to Hebrews
chapter 3, and verse 1.
00:31:28.48\00:31:33.12
The Bible says:
"Therefore, holy brethren,
00:31:33.15\00:31:35.72
partakers of the heavenly
calling, consider the Apostle
00:31:35.76\00:31:39.89
and High Priest of our
confession, Jesus Christ."
00:31:39.93\00:31:42.96
Paul is simply saying
here think about Christ.
00:31:43.00\00:31:48.34
Think about the anti-type who is
in the heavenly sanctuary and He
00:31:48.37\00:31:54.14
is our heavenly
high priest and He is
00:31:54.18\00:31:56.98
ministering on our behalf.
00:31:57.01\00:31:58.98
Now go with me to
chapter 4 and look at verse 16.
00:31:59.01\00:32:03.39
Paul says, "Let us therefore
come boldly to the throne of
00:32:03.42\00:32:06.42
grace, that we may
obtain mercy and find grace
00:32:06.45\00:32:09.92
to help in time of need."

Go back to the verse
before that, verse 15:

"For we do not have a
High Priest who cannot

sympathize with our weakness,
but was in all points tempted as

we are, yet without sin."

Now, let's put
this all together.

saying those types were

There is a heavenly sanctuary,
there is a heavenly high priest,

Jesus Christ, who is
able to sympathize with us.

He was tempted just like we
are, He knows our infirmities,

He knows our weaknesses, and
we can come to Him and receive

mercy and grace
and pardon from sin.

And as we surrender our hearts
to God and ask Him to come into

our life, be
our Lord and Savior,

forgive us of our sins, He not
only cleanses us of that sin,

but He also gives us the
power to not sin anymore.

And we can rest from sinning.

But we also rest in the
merits of the blood of Christ.

His death on the
cross was our substitute.

He paid our penalty for us and
so we can rest in the work that

He has done on our behalf,
no longer trying to earn our

salvation, trying to, by our
own merits and our own goodness,

get ourselves into heaven.

But there is a spiritual
rest that is at play there.

And He's saying you can
have that spiritual rest.

Here we see that the experience
that the nation of Israel failed

to obtain is still
available to us today.

Why? Because God said it.
00:34:03.17\00:34:05.77
Because God doesn't lie.

God promised, "I'm going
to give you a heavenly Canaan.

I'm going to give
you spiritual rest."

Look at with me in Hebrews
chapter 4 at verse 1 again:

"Therefore, since a promise
remains of entering His rest,

let us fear lest any of you
seem to have come short of it."

I like that word "fear" there.

It reminds me of
that proverb that says,

"The fear of God is the
beginning of wisdom," amen?

You see, brothers and sisters,
the problem that Israel had,

the problem that
many people have today,
00:34:45.35\00:34:49.38
is we look to the types and the
symbols and the patterns and the
00:34:49.42\00:34:53.46
shadows and the
models and the examples.
00:34:53.49\00:34:56.86
We look to those things
to save us, but they can't.
00:34:56.89\00:35:02.70
They can only point
us to the One who can.
00:35:02.73\00:35:07.04
And we can't enter
into that spiritual
00:35:07.07\00:35:09.84
rest until we recognize that.
00:35:09.87\00:35:14.14
Now, let me take you
to Hebrews chapter 11.
00:35:14.18\00:35:18.05
Hebrews chapter 11 is
referred to by many people
00:35:18.08\00:35:21.62
as the Hall of Faith.
00:35:21.65\00:35:24.25
That's because it talks about
the faith of Abel and it talks
00:35:24.29\00:35:27.66
about the faith of Enoch.
00:35:27.69\00:35:33.36
It talks about
the faith of Noah.
00:35:33.40\00:35:36.97
It talks about
the faith of Abraham.
00:35:37.00\00:35:39.23
It talks about the faith
of Isaac and Jacob and Sarah.
00:35:39.27\00:35:43.14
And then notice what it
says, Hebrews 11, verse 13.
00:35:43.17\00:35:47.74
It says: "These
all died in faith,
00:35:47.78\00:35:50.88
not receiving the promise."
00:35:50.91\00:35:53.11
Now, hold on a minute.
00:35:53.15\00:35:54.85
At least Isaac and
Jacob, they had lived
00:35:54.88\00:35:57.35
in the Promised Land, right?
00:35:57.39\00:35:59.15
So obviously, the promise
is not referring to the type,
00:35:59.19\00:36:02.96
but it's
referring to the anti-type.
00:36:02.99\00:36:05.29
It's referring to a heavenly
Canaan and it's referring to a
00:36:05.33\00:36:09.60
spiritual rest that
God is offering to us.

"They all died in faith,
not having received the promise,
00:36:14.34\00:36:16.77
but having seen them
afar off were assured of them,

embraced them and confessed them
that they were strangers and

pilgrims on the earth.

For those who say
such things declare plainly

that they seek a homeland.

And truly if they had called to
mind the country from which they

had come out, they would
have had opportunity return.

But now they desire a better,
that is, a heavenly country.

ashamed to be called their God,

prepared a city for them."

You see, all of those types
and shadows and symbols and

patterns, all of
those things were pointing

to a greater reality.

They were pointing
to a heavenly Canaan.

They were pointing to
a spiritual rest that God

intends for all of us.

And brothers and
sisters, I don't know about you,

but when I look at the shadows
and the patterns and the types

and the symbols, I
long for something more.

the heavenly Canaan?

that we cannot do in ourselves.

likens God's rest at the end of

creation that He
ceased from all His works.

And it likens it to that for us.

We are to cease
from all of our works.

Stop trying to
earn our salvation.

Stop trying by our own
merits to get to heaven.

So many times, I've seen
Christians who are trying to

live the Christian
life in their own power.

We can't do it.

But we can rest in the work
that Christ has done for us.

The Sabbath is God's rest.

He rested on the seventh day as
a divine acknowledgement of the

work that He had completed.

And those
verses put it this way.

That's Hebrews
4, verse 9 and 10.

"There remains therefore a
rest for the people of God.

For he who has entered His rest

works as God did from His."

And so, according
to the Scriptures,

our Sabbath rest that we
celebrate every single week is

also a type of a greater
rest that God intends for us,

a Sabbath rest for all eternity.

He has promised us a heavenly

us a eternal rest from sin.

type and the anti-type.

For Israel, imagine as they were

fulfilled until they went

And the same is

We long for something better.

And we are not going to truly be
at rest until we get the eternal
