welcome to another edition 00:00:35.56\00:00:37.50 of the Sabbath School Study Hour. 00:00:37.53\00:00:39.13 My name is Pastor Shawn Brummund, 00:00:39.17\00:00:40.60 and I have the privilege of welcoming and opening 00:00:40.64\00:00:43.87 our session here with prayer. 00:00:43.91\00:00:45.94 But before we open with prayer, we want to talk a little bit 00:00:45.97\00:00:48.11 about the Quarterly. 00:00:48.14\00:00:49.61 Today we're going to be looking at the Quarterly we've been 00:00:49.64\00:00:51.61 studying, which is "The Promise: God's Everlasting Covenant." 00:00:51.65\00:00:55.82 And we're looking at lesson number seven. 00:00:55.85\00:00:58.09 So, if you have a copy of the Quarterly, make sure that you 00:00:58.12\00:01:00.29 have it with you. 00:01:00.32\00:01:01.79 If you have your Bible--if you don't have your Bible with you, 00:01:01.82\00:01:03.53 make sure that you go and grab it. 00:01:03.56\00:01:05.46 This is going to be an in-depth Bible study, once again. 00:01:05.49\00:01:08.60 And I also want to invite you to take advantage of our free gift 00:01:08.63\00:01:13.03 offer that we have this morning, which is, "Written in Stone," 00:01:13.07\00:01:18.81 which is one of my favorite study guides, 00:01:18.84\00:01:20.94 "Written in Stone," 00:01:20.98\00:01:22.84 and you can just simply dial 1-866-788-3966. 00:01:22.88\00:01:27.92 Again, that's 1-866-788-3966. 00:01:27.95\00:01:32.29 And when you do get an answer, make sure that you ask 00:01:32.32\00:01:34.52 for Offer #111. 00:01:34.56\00:01:37.79 That's just a little bit easier today. 00:01:37.83\00:01:39.43 The number is 111. 00:01:39.46\00:01:41.06 Now, if you want a digital copy, and you are in the US, you can 00:01:41.10\00:01:44.57 also text the code SH098, and you want to be able 00:01:44.60\00:01:49.70 to dial that to 40544. 00:01:49.74\00:01:54.71 So, please take advantage of that, 00:01:54.74\00:01:56.38 if you've never studied this before. 00:01:56.41\00:01:57.88 I know that it'll be definitely worth your time 00:01:57.91\00:01:59.75 and investment in that. 00:01:59.78\00:02:02.18 So, before we invite our musician out, we want--actually, 00:02:02.22\00:02:05.72 we're going to invite our musician out first, 00:02:05.75\00:02:07.39 and then we're going to open with prayer. 00:02:07.42\00:02:09.09 Nice to have you. that gave us life and continues to sustain 00:06:18.41\00:06:22.08 our lives by Your grace. 00:06:22.11\00:06:24.75 As we come to You this morning, we want to pray that Your 00:06:24.78\00:06:26.72 Holy Spirit will be with us. 00:06:26.75\00:06:28.25 We claim the promise, Lord Jesus, that You gave to Your 00:06:28.28\00:06:30.85 first disciples and extended to us, that when we ask for it with 00:06:30.89\00:06:36.26 sincerity, that You will give us the Holy Spirit, that Your 00:06:36.29\00:06:39.59 presence will truly abide with us and dwell in our minds, 00:06:39.63\00:06:44.23 in our hearts, and that You will be our teacher, 00:06:44.27\00:06:49.30 that You will help us to be able to learn all things in concern 00:06:49.34\00:06:53.14 to what You want us to know. 00:06:53.17\00:06:55.91 Father, we thank You for your Bible. 00:06:55.94\00:06:57.48 And as we open it today, we want to pray, God, 00:06:57.51\00:06:59.11 that You will truly help us to be able to understand it better, 00:06:59.15\00:07:03.35 that we might be able to see You for all that You are. 00:07:03.39\00:07:06.22 Please bless our teacher, Pastor Doug Batchelor, today. 00:07:06.25\00:07:09.42 And Lord, we thank You for him and for his ministry, 00:07:09.46\00:07:13.26 and we count on being blessed once again. 00:07:13.29\00:07:15.73 We pray it all in Christ's name, amen. 00:07:15.76\00:07:19.13 Doug Batchelor: Happy Sabbath. 00:07:21.20\00:07:22.80 congregation: Happy Sabbath. 00:07:22.84\00:07:24.21 Doug: Good to see each of you. 00:07:24.24\00:07:25.61 Now, they reminded me in the studio, they said, you know, 00:07:25.64\00:07:27.11 a lot of times when this program airs on various satellite 00:07:27.14\00:07:30.01 networks, it is not on Sabbath, because a lot of teachers watch 00:07:30.05\00:07:32.91 it in advance, and so they might be watching it on Thursday. 00:07:32.95\00:07:36.52 And so I'm supposed to say, "Good morning." 00:07:36.55\00:07:38.85 And so whatever time it is you're watching it, 00:07:38.89\00:07:41.22 of course, it's Sabbath here during this time. 00:07:41.26\00:07:43.73 And wow, we're living in some fascinating times, and I'm just 00:07:43.76\00:07:50.13 so thankful that as much as the world changes, 00:07:50.17\00:07:52.40 the Word of God does not change. 00:07:52.43\00:07:55.70 Flowers fade, and the heavens and the earth might pass away 00:07:55.74\00:07:59.91 before the Word of God passes away. 00:07:59.94\00:08:01.74 We're going to be talking today, continuing in our study dealing 00:08:01.78\00:08:04.95 with the promise, talking about the covenants of salvation 00:08:04.98\00:08:08.05 that God made with His people. 00:08:08.08\00:08:09.82 And our lesson today is lesson number seven. 00:08:09.85\00:08:12.49 It's the "Covenant at Sinai." 00:08:12.52\00:08:15.76 And we have a memory verse, and the memory verse is 00:08:15.79\00:08:19.16 from Exodus 19, verse 4. 00:08:19.19\00:08:22.80 It says, "You have seen what I did to the Egyptians and how 00:08:22.83\00:08:26.20 I bore you on eagle's wings and brought you to myself. 00:08:26.23\00:08:31.07 You know, the story of the Exodus is the story of 00:08:31.11\00:08:33.41 salvation, and it is just a wonderful analogy. 00:08:33.44\00:08:38.08 It's a living metaphor of how God saves us, brings us from 00:08:38.11\00:08:43.18 that slavery to sin into the promised land. 00:08:43.22\00:08:46.45 We're going to talk a little bit about that later in the lesson. 00:08:46.49\00:08:49.19 I want to greet those who are worshiping with us online. 00:08:49.22\00:08:53.46 We know we have folks that are watching on a couple of 00:08:53.50\00:08:55.76 different Facebook channels, on YouTube, on satellite, 00:08:55.80\00:09:00.20 and we know you're here. 00:09:00.24\00:09:01.84 We also have some members, there's some members 00:09:01.87\00:09:03.64 that can't attend locally. 00:09:03.67\00:09:05.54 They're part of our online members. 00:09:05.57\00:09:07.48 And we have members in other countries that have no local 00:09:07.51\00:09:09.34 church that they can worship with, and so we want to welcome 00:09:09.38\00:09:13.11 you, as well, those of you who are part 00:09:13.15\00:09:15.65 of the Granite Bay online group. 00:09:15.68\00:09:17.59 In our first section dealing with the subject 00:09:17.62\00:09:20.39 of "On Eagles' Wings." 00:09:20.42\00:09:23.69 And this is based upon a couple of scriptures in the Bible. 00:09:23.73\00:09:27.40 Now, you realize the Ten Commandments--what chapter? 00:09:27.46\00:09:31.07 I'll repeat what you say. 00:09:31.10\00:09:32.87 Where do you find the Ten Commandments? 00:09:32.90\00:09:35.37 Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5, and Jesus gives a partial list 00:09:35.40\00:09:42.61 in Mark chapter 10, and there's other places 00:09:42.64\00:09:44.68 in the New Testament. 00:09:44.71\00:09:46.38 But you find your complete list there in Exodus 20. 00:09:46.41\00:09:49.55 So, in Exodus 19, the Lord is leading up to the giving 00:09:49.58\00:09:53.62 or delivery of the Ten Commandments, 00:09:53.66\00:09:55.32 and that's why we're studying this. 00:09:55.36\00:09:57.13 He's telling you, really, what the prerequisites are 00:09:57.16\00:10:00.16 for the covenant. 00:10:00.20\00:10:01.70 God reminds them how He took care of them as an eagle 00:10:01.73\00:10:05.63 protects its young. 00:10:05.67\00:10:07.20 And these are the passages here. 00:10:07.24\00:10:08.47 Exodus 19, verse 4, "You've seen what I did to the Egyptians and 00:10:08.50\00:10:11.87 how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself." 00:10:11.91\00:10:18.01 Now, when you say eagle in America, 00:10:18.05\00:10:21.02 what's our national symbol? 00:10:21.05\00:10:23.99 But it's a bald eagle. 00:10:24.02\00:10:25.89 Now, the eagle that they had in Palestine 00:10:25.92\00:10:28.82 was not that same eagle. 00:10:28.86\00:10:30.26 Now, I think we've got an eagle we're going to put up 00:10:30.29\00:10:32.13 on the screen here, or two. 00:10:32.16\00:10:33.90 One says, "I bore you on eagles' wings." 00:10:33.93\00:10:35.56 There's a bald eagle, but it's not a baby eagle on his back. 00:10:35.60\00:10:38.80 Someone snapped this picture of a crow. 00:10:38.83\00:10:41.57 Looked like--it looks like he's hitchhiking 00:10:41.60\00:10:44.07 on the back of an eagle. 00:10:44.11\00:10:46.78 Now, you've probably seen before where crows and eagles kind of 00:10:46.81\00:10:49.71 harass each other in the air, mostly the crows 00:10:49.74\00:10:52.05 harassing the eagles. 00:10:52.08\00:10:53.92 It looks to me like they're not necessarily friends, but this 00:10:53.95\00:10:57.22 crow is just sort of like landing on the back of the eagle 00:10:57.25\00:11:00.22 to mock him a little bit. 00:11:00.26\00:11:02.62 The behavior of eagles bearing their young on their backs 00:11:02.66\00:11:08.90 is very rarely a witness, and there have been a few 00:11:08.93\00:11:13.47 ornithologists--Karen, and I had a next door neighbor across 00:11:13.50\00:11:17.97 the street for 20-something years who was 00:11:18.01\00:11:19.91 a world famous ornithologist. 00:11:19.94\00:11:21.81 And I used to take advantage of Ed Harper and ask him questions. 00:11:21.84\00:11:25.35 When I had Amazing Facts about birds, 00:11:25.38\00:11:27.42 he always knew everything about birds. 00:11:27.45\00:11:29.35 And there's really no journal or documentation of eagles bearing 00:11:29.38\00:11:32.45 their babies on their backs. 00:11:32.49\00:11:35.32 There is one report of an ornithologist traveling in 00:11:35.36\00:11:38.86 another country that saw an eagle dive under its young on 00:11:38.89\00:11:42.40 its first flight, when it realized it was not getting its 00:11:42.43\00:11:45.67 wings and caught it on its back and got it lifted up again, 00:11:45.70\00:11:50.61 and it fluttered down eventually and learned how to fly. 00:11:50.64\00:11:52.87 But that's very rare. 00:11:52.91\00:11:55.21 So, what does this mean? 00:11:55.24\00:11:56.98 He bore you on His back as eagles. 00:11:57.01\00:11:58.31 By the way, the eagles that you find in Israel 00:11:58.35\00:12:01.82 are not the American eagle. 00:12:01.85\00:12:03.22 It's the imperial eagle. 00:12:03.25\00:12:05.12 I think we have a picture of that. 00:12:05.15\00:12:06.59 There it is. 00:12:06.62\00:12:08.19 And you would also find those in Sinai. 00:12:08.22\00:12:10.03 It's also a majestic-looking bird. 00:12:10.06\00:12:12.43 When you think about the eagles in the Bible, keep in mind, 00:12:12.46\00:12:16.93 what was the ensign on the Roman standard? 00:12:16.97\00:12:21.67 An eagle. 00:12:21.70\00:12:23.47 That's interesting, because Moses told the children of 00:12:23.51\00:12:25.71 Israel that, "If you turn away from me, and you do not obey me, 00:12:25.74\00:12:30.15 and you worship other gods, and do not keep my commandments, 00:12:30.18\00:12:32.65 I'll send another nation from afar, whose language you do not 00:12:32.68\00:12:35.62 understand and they will swoop down on you like an eagle." 00:12:35.65\00:12:39.99 And when the Romans came and surrounded Jerusalem 00:12:40.02\00:12:42.02 with their standards, and they had eagles on them. 00:12:42.06\00:12:44.99 So, I thought that was interesting. 00:12:45.03\00:12:47.86 But let me read to you Deuteronomy chapter 32 before I 00:12:47.93\00:12:51.70 go too far with the eagles here. 00:12:51.73\00:12:53.64 Deuteronomy 32, verse 10 through 12. 00:12:53.67\00:12:57.37 "He found him in a desert land and in the wasteland a howling 00:12:57.41\00:13:01.54 wilderness; He encircled him, He instructed him," talking about 00:13:01.58\00:13:05.51 God with His people, "He kept him as the apple of His eye," 00:13:05.55\00:13:09.85 meaning the focus of your pupil. 00:13:09.88\00:13:13.02 "And as an eagle stirs up its nest, hovers over its young, 00:13:13.05\00:13:20.33 spreading out its wings, taking them up, 00:13:20.36\00:13:23.97 carrying them on its wings." 00:13:24.00\00:13:26.00 Here you have it again. 00:13:26.03\00:13:27.50 God's talking about an eagle carrying them on its wings. 00:13:27.54\00:13:32.11 And he says, "So the Lord led him, and there was 00:13:32.14\00:13:36.28 no foreign god with him." 00:13:36.31\00:13:39.28 You know, we have several pictures of the tenderness 00:13:39.31\00:13:41.98 of God in the Bible, and it uses birds. 00:13:42.02\00:13:45.89 You know, Jesus wept over Jerusalem. 00:13:45.92\00:13:48.29 And he says in Matthew 23:37, "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the 00:13:48.32\00:13:52.49 one who kills the prophets and stones those 00:13:52.53\00:13:55.03 who are sent to her. 00:13:55.06\00:13:56.70 How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen 00:13:56.73\00:14:00.47 gathers her chicks under her wings, 00:14:00.50\00:14:03.20 but you were not willing." 00:14:03.24\00:14:04.87 Now, I've seen this many times. 00:14:04.91\00:14:06.37 I was walking through the woods one time, and I came upon a 00:14:06.41\00:14:10.61 quail, and its chicks had just hatched out there on the dirt 00:14:10.65\00:14:15.92 road, and they were off in the distance. 00:14:15.95\00:14:17.79 I was a little bit away, but I could see them. 00:14:17.82\00:14:20.39 And the little chicks were all scattered around. 00:14:20.42\00:14:22.39 They looked like insects, they were so small. 00:14:22.42\00:14:24.63 And they're pecking away, getting their first meals after 00:14:24.66\00:14:26.93 they hatched out, and the mother saw me, and she clucked, 00:14:26.96\00:14:31.73 and they all scurried under her wings, 00:14:31.77\00:14:33.80 and she spread her wings over them. 00:14:33.84\00:14:35.94 And then they got off into the grass, and then she came 00:14:35.97\00:14:38.97 towards me and started flapping around like she was wounded, 00:14:39.01\00:14:42.08 wanting me to chase her. 00:14:42.11\00:14:45.61 Have any of you ever seen this before? 00:14:45.65\00:14:47.78 Yeah, they will act like they're wounded to direct you away from 00:14:47.82\00:14:51.52 where the nest is or where the young are. 00:14:51.55\00:14:54.09 And so--I don't know why people call chickens, chickens. 00:14:54.12\00:14:56.96 They're sometimes very brave when it comes 00:14:56.99\00:15:00.20 to their babies, right? 00:15:00.23\00:15:01.70 That just isn't fair. 00:15:01.73\00:15:03.20 And so God uses this picture of taking us under His wings. 00:15:03.23\00:15:07.84 We sing that song, "Under His wings, I am safely abiding." 00:15:07.87\00:15:11.91 And so it's a picture of God's loving protection 00:15:11.94\00:15:14.58 and sacrificial protection for us. 00:15:14.61\00:15:17.15 It says, "As an eagle stirs up its nest." 00:15:17.18\00:15:20.45 You know, when an eagle first builds its nest, and it lays its 00:15:20.48\00:15:24.62 egg, it's got a lot of down and soft materials 00:15:24.65\00:15:28.09 that it's collected in the nest. 00:15:28.12\00:15:30.29 And as the little fledglings begin to grow and start getting 00:15:30.33\00:15:33.43 developed, and they're stretching their wings, 00:15:33.46\00:15:36.90 and eagles--I forget what-- 00:15:36.93\00:15:40.57 I think 20% of eagles do not survive their first flight. 00:15:40.60\00:15:44.47 I think that's what the percentage is. 00:15:44.51\00:15:46.61 After all that time in feeding and rearing them, they are not 00:15:46.64\00:15:49.61 like some birds that if they miss out on their first flight, 00:15:49.64\00:15:52.51 they'll just flop on the ground. 00:15:52.55\00:15:54.32 Do you know an owl, if it messes up on its first flight, 00:15:54.35\00:15:56.28 it climbs the tree with its talons. 00:15:56.32\00:15:58.85 It can climb right back up to the nest. 00:15:58.89\00:16:01.56 But eagles, they can't do that. 00:16:01.59\00:16:03.53 Sometimes they nest way up on these rocky crags. 00:16:03.56\00:16:05.93 And if they don't make it through the first flight and 00:16:05.96\00:16:07.66 figure out how to use their wings, they're in trouble. 00:16:07.73\00:16:09.90 So, what the mother does, she makes the nest uncomfortable, 00:16:09.93\00:16:13.77 while their wings are developing, and they get up, 00:16:13.80\00:16:15.50 and they just stretch their muscles, and they flap, 00:16:15.54\00:16:18.97 and they might catch a breeze and hover above the nest, 00:16:19.01\00:16:20.94 and they flop back down on it. 00:16:20.98\00:16:22.94 So, most of the time, they've sort of gotten the hang of 00:16:22.98\00:16:25.55 aerodynamics before they launch out, 00:16:25.58\00:16:27.72 because their first flight is pretty scary. 00:16:27.75\00:16:32.62 Any of you ever gone hang gliding before? 00:16:32.65\00:16:36.73 I have. 00:16:36.76\00:16:38.49 I still own two hang gliders. 00:16:38.53\00:16:40.00 I haven't used them in a long time. 00:16:40.03\00:16:41.80 But our boys used to-- we'd go hang gliding. 00:16:41.83\00:16:44.23 Now it's pretty dangerous with people. 00:16:44.27\00:16:45.97 Most people have given it up, but I remember 00:16:46.00\00:16:48.67 the first time I jumped off a hill. 00:16:48.70\00:16:50.31 I was with an instructor, and he said, "Trust your wings; 00:16:50.34\00:16:55.68 it'll hold you." 00:16:55.71\00:16:57.28 And boy, I was so scared because I knew as soon as I launched off 00:16:57.31\00:17:00.42 this hill, there was, you know, a thousand feet below me. 00:17:00.45\00:17:04.82 If anything failed, that was the end of Doug. 00:17:04.85\00:17:07.72 And one of the hardest things--but I had to do it 00:17:07.76\00:17:11.43 because my 13-year-old son was watching at the time. 00:17:11.46\00:17:14.86 And I thought, "He's going to think dad's a chicken." 00:17:14.93\00:17:17.87 But that first flight, that was pretty scary. 00:17:17.90\00:17:22.00 You feel like a pterodactyl has captured you. 00:17:22.04\00:17:24.57 You jump out and something's holding you up from behind. 00:17:24.61\00:17:27.64 But that's too much about eagles, sorry, all right? 00:17:27.68\00:17:33.28 Eagles are a symbol of God, because they're also strong. 00:17:33.31\00:17:36.92 Isaiah 40:31, "Those who wait upon the Lord 00:17:36.95\00:17:40.36 shall renew their strength. 00:17:40.39\00:17:42.26 They will mount up with wings like eagles. 00:17:42.29\00:17:44.46 They will run and not be weary. 00:17:44.49\00:17:46.26 They shall walk and not faint." 00:17:46.29\00:17:49.26 And then in Ezekiel 1, verse 10, it says "For as the likeness--" 00:17:49.30\00:17:53.00 Another place where God is compared--or one of the aspects 00:17:53.03\00:17:55.74 of His character is compared to an eagle. 00:17:55.77\00:17:57.87 You see both in Ezekiel and in Revelation, the four creatures 00:17:57.91\00:18:00.91 around the throne of God. 00:18:00.94\00:18:02.38 What are they? 00:18:02.41\00:18:04.65 You've got a man, got a calf, got a lion and an eagle. 00:18:04.68\00:18:10.39 You see this both in Ezekiel chapter 1 00:18:10.42\00:18:13.09 and in Revelation chapter 4. 00:18:13.12\00:18:15.62 The first living creature was like a lion. 00:18:15.66\00:18:17.46 The second was like a calf. 00:18:17.49\00:18:19.06 The third had the face of a man. 00:18:19.09\00:18:20.56 The fourth was like a flying eagle-- 00:18:20.60\00:18:22.06 not just an eagle. 00:18:22.10\00:18:23.60 What kind of eagle? 00:18:23.63\00:18:25.00 A flying eagle. 00:18:25.03\00:18:26.40 Why does God use an eagle as-- 00:18:26.43\00:18:29.07 those four creatures all are giving different aspects-- 00:18:29.10\00:18:31.74 you realize Revelation is full of symbols. 00:18:31.77\00:18:33.54 These are symbolic prophecies. 00:18:33.58\00:18:35.34 They're giving aspects of God's character. 00:18:35.38\00:18:38.35 And some have wondered if Matthew is the lion, the Gospel 00:18:38.38\00:18:42.82 of Matthew is the lion, and Luke is the man, 00:18:42.85\00:18:46.22 and John is the sacrifice. 00:18:46.25\00:18:48.62 He is the calf. 00:18:48.66\00:18:50.49 And Mark is the eagle. 00:18:50.53\00:18:52.39 Mark is that fast gospel. 00:18:52.43\00:18:55.40 Eagles are known for their speed. 00:18:55.43\00:18:57.07 They're known for their sight. 00:18:57.10\00:18:58.90 They can see things so far or so far away. 00:18:58.93\00:19:02.97 And when God said, "I bore you," speaking of Israel, "I bore you 00:19:03.00\00:19:06.34 like an eagle does his young," saving them from Egypt. 00:19:06.37\00:19:10.55 Something else about an eagle is they could fly so high and so 00:19:10.58\00:19:13.92 far that there's no mountain, there's no army, no river, 00:19:13.95\00:19:17.12 no ocean is an obstacle. 00:19:17.15\00:19:19.45 No mater what the obstacles were for the children of Israel, God 00:19:19.49\00:19:22.16 removed all obstacles and delivered them from slavery. 00:19:22.19\00:19:25.56 So, there's nothing that can keep God 00:19:25.59\00:19:27.36 from saving us from slavery. 00:19:27.40\00:19:30.17 And eagles have incredible vision as well. 00:19:30.20\00:19:33.64 So, he uses this analogy. 00:19:33.67\00:19:36.10 You can also look here in Deuteronomy 1:29. 00:19:36.14\00:19:41.08 It says in verse 29, "Then I said to you, 00:19:41.11\00:19:45.45 'Do not be terrified or afraid of them. 00:19:45.48\00:19:47.98 The Lord your God who goes before you, He will fight for 00:19:48.02\00:19:51.32 you, according to all that Ge did for you in Egypt before your 00:19:51.35\00:19:54.76 eyes in the wilderness, where ye saw how the Lord your God 00:19:54.79\00:19:58.73 carried you as a man carries his son, in all the way 00:19:58.76\00:20:04.13 that you went, until you came to this place." 00:20:04.17\00:20:07.47 You know, there's a real challenging age in the 00:20:07.50\00:20:11.61 development of a child, where they're not crawling anymore. 00:20:11.64\00:20:16.85 They just start to walk, but they're not walking fast enough 00:20:16.88\00:20:19.11 to keep up with the parents. 00:20:19.15\00:20:21.05 And you've either gotta, you know, hold your hand down, 00:20:21.08\00:20:22.78 unless they grab hold of your finger, 'cause they can't get 00:20:22.82\00:20:24.42 their hand around your whole hand. 00:20:24.45\00:20:26.52 And you've gotta walk slow, or you've gotta pick them up 00:20:26.55\00:20:29.02 and carry them. 00:20:29.06\00:20:31.16 And sometimes, you know, especially if you're going 00:20:31.19\00:20:34.36 across the street, they'll see a parent pick up their child 00:20:34.40\00:20:37.17 and carry them. 00:20:37.20\00:20:38.57 They said, "Look, I'm not taking any chances." 00:20:38.60\00:20:40.17 And when there's danger, 00:20:40.20\00:20:41.50 the parent picks up the child and carries them. 00:20:41.54\00:20:43.64 And this is what God is saying. 00:20:43.67\00:20:45.17 He's got this picture of parental love. 00:20:45.21\00:20:47.88 And so this is what is being highlighted there under Sunday. 00:20:47.91\00:20:51.51 Also, Psalm 103, verse 13, "As a father pities his children, 00:20:51.55\00:20:57.49 so the Lord pities those who fear Him, 00:20:57.52\00:21:00.22 for He knows our frame. 00:21:00.26\00:21:02.09 He remembers that we are dust." 00:21:02.12\00:21:04.19 God is so patient and so merciful. 00:21:04.23\00:21:06.26 Has He been patient with you? 00:21:06.29\00:21:08.06 Is He patient with me? 00:21:08.10\00:21:10.40 I just thank God for His patience. 00:21:10.43\00:21:13.60 So, under Monday, it says, "A Pattern for Salvation." 00:21:13.64\00:21:18.27 Exodus 6:6, "Therefore say to the children of Israel, 00:21:18.31\00:21:22.61 'I am the Lord. 00:21:22.64\00:21:24.28 I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. 00:21:24.31\00:21:27.15 I will rescue you from their bondage, and I will redeem you 00:21:27.18\00:21:31.25 with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. 00:21:31.29\00:21:34.72 And I will take you as my people. 00:21:34.76\00:21:36.89 I will be your God. 00:21:36.93\00:21:38.69 Then you will know that I am the Lord your God, who brings you 00:21:38.73\00:21:41.06 out from under the burdens of the Egyptians." 00:21:41.10\00:21:44.40 You know, this was all foretold. 00:21:44.43\00:21:46.63 God had told Abraham hundreds of years earlier-- 00:21:46.67\00:21:50.37 it's very interesting. 00:21:50.41\00:21:51.81 Abraham went down to Egypt because there was a famine. 00:21:51.84\00:21:56.51 And he brought his wife, and he was afraid to tell the Egyptians 00:21:56.54\00:22:02.12 his relationship with his wife, because Sarah was so beautiful 00:22:02.15\00:22:05.89 that he thought that maybe they'd kill him and take her 00:22:05.92\00:22:09.46 to be part of the harem of the Pharaoh. 00:22:09.49\00:22:12.79 And so what happened is God told Abraham, he said, 00:22:12.83\00:22:17.83 "Your descendants are going to be slaves in a strange land and 00:22:17.87\00:22:23.37 they will afflict them 400 years, and then I will 00:22:23.41\00:22:26.34 visit them with plagues. 00:22:26.37\00:22:28.44 And after that, they will come out with great abundance. 00:22:28.48\00:22:31.48 What happened to Abraham? 00:22:31.51\00:22:33.18 Plagues fell on the Pharaoh when he took Sarah into his house. 00:22:33.21\00:22:38.49 And no one ever touched her, but he did take Sarah 00:22:38.52\00:22:40.79 into his house. 00:22:40.82\00:22:42.42 Plagues fell on the house of Pharaoh, and then Pharaoh sent 00:22:42.46\00:22:44.56 Abraham away with great wealth. 00:22:44.59\00:22:46.29 He gave him possessions and treasures 'cause God spoke 00:22:46.33\00:22:48.36 to him, and he saw this was a prophet of God, 00:22:48.40\00:22:51.23 and he sent him away. 00:22:51.27\00:22:53.10 What happened to the Israelites? 00:22:53.13\00:22:55.14 Plagues fell on the Egyptians, and it says they spoiled 00:22:55.17\00:22:59.04 the Egyptians. 00:22:59.07\00:23:00.68 God sent them away with great wealth. 00:23:00.71\00:23:02.24 So, did you catch that? 00:23:02.28\00:23:03.78 What happened to Abraham in his personal experience happened 00:23:03.81\00:23:07.35 to his descendants later. 00:23:07.38\00:23:10.09 Now, this is also going to come up in our lesson, because in the 00:23:10.12\00:23:12.72 same way that God called Israel out of Egypt--it says, 00:23:12.75\00:23:18.73 "Out of Egypt I've called my son." 00:23:18.76\00:23:20.96 Did Jesus go down to Egypt when He was a young baby? 00:23:20.96\00:23:25.87 And was He called out of Egypt back into the promised land 00:23:25.90\00:23:28.57 when Herod died? 00:23:28.60\00:23:30.11 He was. 00:23:30.14\00:23:31.57 So, the Bible refers to that as sort of an allegory of what had 00:23:31.61\00:23:34.04 happened to the people. 00:23:34.08\00:23:35.64 "I've called my son out of Egypt." 00:23:35.68\00:23:37.05 All right, going to Monday and looking at Exodus 6, it says, 00:23:37.08\00:23:42.52 "Therefore say to the children of Israel, 'I am the Lord. 00:23:42.55\00:23:45.69 I'll bring you out from the burdens of the Egyptians. 00:23:45.72\00:23:47.99 I'll rescue you." 00:23:48.02\00:23:49.62 This is talking about, again, the salvation from the bondage. 00:23:49.66\00:23:53.23 What happened there is a pattern of how God saves us. 00:23:53.26\00:23:57.77 Look at Romans 15, verse 4. 00:23:57.80\00:24:00.34 "For whatever things were written before are written for 00:24:00.37\00:24:03.20 our learning, that we through the patience and the comfort 00:24:03.24\00:24:06.51 of the scriptures might have hope." 00:24:06.54\00:24:09.68 Everything that's written in the Bible is written 00:24:09.71\00:24:11.58 for our understanding. 00:24:11.61\00:24:13.58 I remember reading in Luke chapter 24, when Jesus is 00:24:13.62\00:24:18.82 talking to the disciples on the road to Emmaus, 00:24:18.85\00:24:22.49 and they don't know it's Jesus. 00:24:22.52\00:24:24.26 He visits them after the resurrection, and they're 00:24:24.29\00:24:26.13 walking along, and they're talking about how terrible 00:24:26.16\00:24:29.03 the weekend had been. 00:24:29.06\00:24:30.67 Messiah had been executed, and the body is missing, 00:24:30.70\00:24:34.47 and Jesus listens to them complain. 00:24:34.50\00:24:38.64 And He finally says, "Oh, fools and slow of heart to believe, 00:24:38.67\00:24:42.04 all the prophets have spoken, 'Ought not the Christ to have 00:24:42.08\00:24:45.48 suffered these things and entered into glory?' 00:24:45.51\00:24:48.75 And then beginning at Moses and all the prophets, He expounded 00:24:48.78\00:24:52.22 unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning Himself." 00:24:52.25\00:24:56.49 All the scriptures the things concerning Jesus. 00:24:56.52\00:25:00.66 How much Bible was written when Christ was alive? 00:25:00.70\00:25:05.73 Just the Old Testament, right? 00:25:05.77\00:25:07.84 So, when Jesus is talking about Himself in all of 00:25:07.87\00:25:11.57 the scriptures, what scriptures is He using? 00:25:11.61\00:25:14.58 Genesis to Malachi. 00:25:14.61\00:25:16.71 Can you find Jesus in the Old Testament? 00:25:16.75\00:25:20.15 Is the gospel only in the New Testament, 00:25:20.18\00:25:22.38 or do you find the gospel in the Old Testament? 00:25:22.42\00:25:25.45 Were they saved by works in the Old Testament, but were saved 00:25:25.49\00:25:28.06 by faith in the New Testament? 00:25:28.09\00:25:30.29 No, nobody is saved by works. 00:25:30.33\00:25:32.99 Everybody--Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him 00:25:33.03\00:25:36.00 for righteousness. 00:25:36.03\00:25:37.57 Abraham was righteous not by works but by faith. 00:25:37.60\00:25:40.07 Everybody is saved by faith. 00:25:40.10\00:25:41.70 Read Hebrews. 00:25:41.74\00:25:43.17 When Paul writes the book of Hebrews, and he's got this 00:25:43.20\00:25:45.27 chronicle of how the great patriarchs were saved by faith, 00:25:45.31\00:25:48.98 does he mention any New Testament characters? 00:25:49.01\00:25:52.71 He's highlighting all these Old Testament characters. 00:25:52.75\00:25:54.62 They were all saved by faith. 00:25:54.65\00:25:55.95 Everybody is saved by Jesus. 00:25:55.98\00:25:57.92 They were saved back then looking forward in faith 00:25:57.95\00:26:00.49 to the cross. 00:26:00.52\00:26:02.12 We are saved by faith, looking back to the cross. 00:26:02.16\00:26:04.39 Everybody is saved by the cross. 00:26:04.43\00:26:06.56 So, the story of the Exodus is an allegory of how God saves us. 00:26:06.59\00:26:12.13 1 Corinthians chapter 10, verse 1. 00:26:12.17\00:26:15.10 If you have your Bibles, you might want to turn to this one. 00:26:15.14\00:26:17.31 Sometimes I read you a real quick scripture, and by the time 00:26:17.34\00:26:19.37 I'm done, then you find it, but you'll have time 00:26:19.41\00:26:21.08 to find this one. 00:26:21.11\00:26:23.75 "Moreover," 1 Corinthians 10, start with the first verse. 00:26:23.78\00:26:28.18 "Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be aware that our 00:26:28.22\00:26:31.75 fathers," Paul is writing to the Jews, "were under the cloud, 00:26:31.79\00:26:36.26 and they all passed through the sea." 00:26:36.29\00:26:38.36 Now, Paul is talking about the cloud of glory that shaded them 00:26:38.39\00:26:41.83 during the day. 00:26:41.86\00:26:43.43 It was a pillar of fire at night. 00:26:43.47\00:26:45.07 And they went through the sea, the Red Sea. 00:26:45.10\00:26:47.44 All were baptized into Moses. 00:26:47.47\00:26:50.87 Anyone ever say, "Come follow Jesus 00:26:50.91\00:26:52.67 and be baptized into Moses?" 00:26:52.71\00:26:54.48 Who was ever baptized into Moses? 00:26:54.51\00:26:56.41 He's saying when they went through the Red Sea, it was 00:26:56.44\00:26:58.41 a symbol of being baptized into Moses, into his teachings, 00:26:58.45\00:27:01.45 into following him, the way we are baptized into Christ, 00:27:01.48\00:27:04.85 into His teachings, into following Him. 00:27:04.89\00:27:07.09 See the analogies that Paul was making here? 00:27:07.12\00:27:10.06 "They were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea." 00:27:10.09\00:27:13.86 Cloud and sea. 00:27:13.90\00:27:15.43 There's a pillar of fire at night, and they went 00:27:15.46\00:27:17.67 through the sea. 00:27:17.70\00:27:19.20 We must be born of the water. 00:27:19.23\00:27:20.80 We must be born of the Spirit. 00:27:20.84\00:27:23.64 The pillar of fire is born of the fire. 00:27:23.67\00:27:27.08 The Red Sea is a symbol of being baptized in the water. 00:27:27.11\00:27:29.64 We need both baptisms, or you cannot enter 00:27:29.68\00:27:31.78 the kingdom of heaven. 00:27:31.81\00:27:34.82 "And they passed through the sea." 00:27:34.85\00:27:37.15 All were baptized into Moses, and the cloud, and the sea. 00:27:37.19\00:27:39.62 They all ate the spiritual food, and they drank 00:27:39.65\00:27:41.99 that same spiritual drink. 00:27:42.02\00:27:43.86 "For they drank of that spiritual rock that followed 00:27:43.89\00:27:45.86 them, and that rock was Christ." 00:27:45.89\00:27:48.26 Now, was Jesus masquerading as a rock in the Old Testament? 00:27:48.30\00:27:51.27 Or is Paul simply saying that rock is a symbol of Christ? 00:27:51.30\00:27:57.31 The bread that came down from heaven, we don't have to guess. 00:27:57.34\00:28:00.41 Jesus said, "Moses didn't give you that bread. 00:28:00.44\00:28:02.54 I gave you that bread. 00:28:02.58\00:28:04.08 I am the bread that came down from heaven. 00:28:04.11\00:28:06.01 They ate manna, and they're dead now. 00:28:06.05\00:28:07.72 But if you want to eat a bread that will last forever, you must 00:28:07.75\00:28:10.89 eat my flesh and drink my blood, or you have no life in you." 00:28:10.92\00:28:13.89 So, Jesus gave us so many examples of how He 00:28:13.92\00:28:16.79 is the bread of life. 00:28:16.83\00:28:18.39 Can you say amen? 00:28:18.43\00:28:20.00 "Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word," 00:28:20.03\00:28:21.96 and Christ is the Word that proceeds from the mouth of God. 00:28:22.00\00:28:25.40 And so here Paul is showing us how to read the story 00:28:25.43\00:28:27.97 of the Exodus, that it's really an allegory of salvation. 00:28:28.00\00:28:32.81 I'm not done. 00:28:32.84\00:28:34.34 Go to verse 4. 00:28:34.38\00:28:36.01 "And they all drank the same--" 1 Corinthians 10, verse 4-- 00:28:36.04\00:28:38.85 "they drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank 00:28:38.88\00:28:40.92 of that spiritual rock that followed them. 00:28:40.95\00:28:43.15 That rock was Christ. 00:28:43.18\00:28:44.79 But with most of them, God was not well-pleased." 00:28:44.82\00:28:48.99 Now, there are a lot of them that were saved from Egypt, 00:28:49.02\00:28:51.26 but they didn't make it to the promised land, 00:28:51.29\00:28:53.90 because they lost faith along the way. 00:28:53.93\00:28:57.90 "With most of them, God was not pleased." 00:28:57.93\00:28:59.63 Is everybody that says they're a Christian really a Christian? 00:28:59.67\00:29:03.84 Do you think it is the majority, or the minority of people who 00:29:03.87\00:29:07.51 claim to be Christians that are real Christians? 00:29:07.54\00:29:11.45 Show of hands, how many of you think it is the minority 00:29:11.48\00:29:13.78 of people who claim to be Christians? 00:29:13.82\00:29:17.12 You're right. 00:29:17.15\00:29:18.82 I hope that doesn't make you lose faith that you can make it. 00:29:18.85\00:29:21.59 You can't, but Jesus is pretty clear many go in the wide gate, 00:29:21.62\00:29:27.03 few go in the straight gate, and because people 00:29:27.03\00:29:31.10 are not searching for it. 00:29:31.13\00:29:33.67 All these things-- look at verse 6. 00:29:33.70\00:29:36.67 I want to read back to verse 5. 00:29:36.71\00:29:38.41 "Most of them God was not well pleased. 00:29:38.44\00:29:40.01 Their bodies were scattered in the wilderness, 00:29:40.04\00:29:41.74 meaning they died along the way. 00:29:41.78\00:29:43.38 Now, these things became our examples to the intent that we 00:29:43.41\00:29:47.88 should not lust after evil things, as they lusted, 00:29:47.92\00:29:50.82 that we do not become idolators, as were some of them. 00:29:50.85\00:29:53.99 As it is written, the people sat down to eat and drink, 00:29:54.02\00:29:56.19 and they rose up to play. 00:29:56.22\00:29:58.23 Nor let us commit sexual immorality 00:29:58.26\00:30:00.13 as some of them did." 00:30:00.16\00:30:01.76 They had problems with other gods, they had problems with 00:30:01.80\00:30:03.47 evil, they had problems with sexual immorality. 00:30:03.50\00:30:06.13 Those things would never appear in the church today, right? 00:30:06.17\00:30:10.74 And it says, "In that day, 23,000 fell. 00:30:10.77\00:30:14.58 Nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them were also tempted, 00:30:14.61\00:30:17.45 and were destroyed by serpents." 00:30:17.48\00:30:19.45 Talking about the book of Numbers. 00:30:19.48\00:30:21.32 "Nor complain, as some of them murmured and complained, 00:30:21.35\00:30:23.65 and they were destroyed by the destroyer. 00:30:23.69\00:30:26.59 Now, all of these things happened to them as examples, 00:30:26.62\00:30:31.69 and they are written for our admonition upon whom the ends 00:30:31.73\00:30:34.56 of the ages have come." 00:30:34.60\00:30:36.20 And if that was true then, how much more have the ends 00:30:36.23\00:30:38.03 of the age has come now? 00:30:38.07\00:30:39.37 So, can we look at the Exodus experience and find out some 00:30:39.40\00:30:43.24 lessons to keep us out of trouble today? 00:30:43.27\00:30:46.47 First of all, Moses comes, and he says to Pharaoh, 00:30:46.51\00:30:50.48 "Let my people go." 00:30:50.51\00:30:52.11 Who does Moses represent? 00:30:52.15\00:30:54.62 That's easy. 00:30:54.65\00:30:55.95 They were baptized into Moses. 00:30:55.98\00:30:57.29 He's a type of Christ. 00:30:57.32\00:30:58.79 The Pharaoh. 00:30:58.82\00:31:00.62 Do you have to think very long? 00:31:00.66\00:31:02.16 Who does he represent? 00:31:02.19\00:31:03.69 He's the devil. 00:31:03.73\00:31:05.09 We all still together? 00:31:05.13\00:31:06.70 I know it's early, okay? 00:31:06.73\00:31:09.60 Does the Pharaoh want to let go of them? 00:31:09.63\00:31:12.30 No. 00:31:12.33\00:31:14.07 Does the devil want to let go of you? 00:31:14.10\00:31:15.64 No. 00:31:15.67\00:31:17.47 Does Moses tell the children of Israel, 00:31:17.51\00:31:19.14 "I'll make a covenant with you. 00:31:19.17\00:31:20.74 Keep the Ten Commandments, and I will save you out of Egypt"? 00:31:20.78\00:31:26.45 What happens first? 00:31:26.48\00:31:27.88 The Ten Commandments, or the lamb? 00:31:27.92\00:31:30.89 Is it the Law or the lamb? 00:31:30.92\00:31:33.12 He says, "First sacrifice this lamb. 00:31:33.15\00:31:34.99 Then we'll begin a journey to Mount Sinai." 00:31:35.02\00:31:38.56 Were they saved from Egypt because they were obedient? 00:31:38.59\00:31:43.03 Or were they saved from Egypt because of the blood 00:31:43.06\00:31:44.90 of the lamb? 00:31:44.93\00:31:46.47 Some people think you're saved because you keep 00:31:46.50\00:31:48.27 the Ten Commandments. 00:31:48.30\00:31:49.80 No, you keep the Ten Commandments 00:31:49.84\00:31:51.31 because He saved you first. 00:31:51.34\00:31:52.81 That is so important to get that right. 00:31:52.84\00:31:55.18 Because if you're waiting until you keep the Ten Commandments, 00:31:55.21\00:31:57.78 before you accept Jesus, you're never going to get there. 00:31:57.81\00:32:02.75 That's like telling a person to clean up before 00:32:02.78\00:32:04.62 they take a bath. 00:32:04.65\00:32:06.39 That doesn't make any sense. 00:32:06.42\00:32:08.26 First, they were--they took the Passover lamb. 00:32:08.29\00:32:12.09 They applied the blood of the lamb. 00:32:12.13\00:32:14.00 God said, "Now pack up. 00:32:14.03\00:32:15.50 We're beginning a journey." 00:32:15.53\00:32:16.97 The journey begins with the sacrifice of the lamb. 00:32:17.00\00:32:20.44 After they left Egypt, they went through the Red Sea. 00:32:20.47\00:32:23.34 He brings them to Israel, the promised land? 00:32:23.37\00:32:25.47 No, they head south. 00:32:25.51\00:32:28.28 They go to Mount Sinai. 00:32:28.31\00:32:29.78 And there's some debate about where that is. 00:32:29.81\00:32:31.41 I'm personally more inclined to think it's a mountain more in 00:32:31.45\00:32:34.42 Saudi Arabia than it was right there in the Sinai Peninsula, 00:32:34.45\00:32:38.15 because the New Testament says in Arabia. 00:32:38.19\00:32:41.12 And when it says that Elijah went 40 days and 40 nights to 00:32:41.16\00:32:44.29 get to Mount Sinai, it would not have taken him that long to get 00:32:44.33\00:32:46.83 to the popular Sinai location, but it would've taken him much 00:32:46.86\00:32:53.00 longer to get to the one in Saudi Arabia. 00:32:53.03\00:32:55.14 Anyway, we won't go there, but we'll love you either way, 00:32:55.17\00:32:59.24 whatever you believe on that one. 00:32:59.27\00:33:01.14 Either way, He took them to Mount Sinai, right? 00:33:01.18\00:33:04.68 And it was not north. 00:33:04.71\00:33:07.82 And He says, "If you love me--" 00:33:07.85\00:33:09.35 How do the Ten Commandments begin? 00:33:09.38\00:33:10.92 What's the first commandment? 00:33:10.95\00:33:15.62 People always start with the actual commandment. 00:33:15.66\00:33:18.03 They don't include the preamble. 00:33:18.06\00:33:19.49 The preamble is something that God wrote. 00:33:19.53\00:33:21.76 It says, "God spake all these words, saying--" 00:33:21.80\00:33:24.33 Now you begin to write. 00:33:24.37\00:33:25.90 This is where the writing begins. 00:33:25.93\00:33:27.44 This is where the commandment begins. 00:33:27.47\00:33:28.90 "I am the Lord your God that brought you out of the land 00:33:28.94\00:33:31.71 of Egypt, out of the house of bondage." 00:33:31.74\00:33:34.54 What is God saying there? 00:33:34.58\00:33:36.78 "I am the God who saved you." 00:33:36.81\00:33:39.05 Then He's implying, "If you love me, here are my commandments." 00:33:39.08\00:33:43.22 You see Jesus on the cross dying for your sins. 00:33:43.25\00:33:45.52 You see how much He saves you. 00:33:45.55\00:33:46.92 He gives you bread from heaven. 00:33:46.96\00:33:48.42 He provides your needs, water from a rock, defeats you 00:33:48.46\00:33:50.49 from your enemies. 00:33:50.53\00:33:51.93 He did all those things for them before they ever made it 00:33:51.96\00:33:53.56 to Mount Sinai. 00:33:53.60\00:33:55.26 Then He brings them to Mount Sinai, and He says, "I've shown 00:33:55.30\00:33:57.30 you, I've born you on eagles' wings, I've shown you my love. 00:33:57.33\00:34:00.14 I want to make a covenant. 00:34:00.17\00:34:01.60 I will be your God if you'll be my people. 00:34:01.64\00:34:03.10 Do you trust me? 00:34:03.14\00:34:04.51 Do you know I love you? 00:34:04.54\00:34:06.07 Will you love me and obey me?" 00:34:06.11\00:34:07.91 The phrase, "Love God and keep his commandments," 00:34:07.94\00:34:10.21 do you realize that is in the Ten Commandments? 00:34:10.25\00:34:14.28 In the commandment about idolatry, showing mercy unto 00:34:14.32\00:34:17.12 thousands of them that love Him and keep His commandments. 00:34:17.15\00:34:20.46 So, it tells you right there that is the key to keeping the 00:34:20.49\00:34:22.69 Ten Commandments, amen? 00:34:22.72\00:34:25.26 So, everything that happened to them are an allegory. 00:34:25.29\00:34:29.60 Now, were they saved by keeping the Law? 00:34:29.63\00:34:35.37 No. 00:34:35.40\00:34:37.11 Did they go into the promised land breaking it? 00:34:37.14\00:34:40.74 No. 00:34:40.78\00:34:42.41 While they were not saved from Egypt by keeping the Law, they 00:34:42.44\00:34:44.81 did not go into the promised land if they persisted 00:34:44.85\00:34:47.55 in breaking it. 00:34:47.58\00:34:50.65 So, people say, "Well, are you saying that I must obey 00:34:50.69\00:34:52.69 the law to be saved?" 00:34:52.72\00:34:54.62 You're saved because of the grace of Jesus. 00:34:54.66\00:34:57.29 But if you are saved by the grace of Jesus, you will obey. 00:34:57.33\00:34:59.69 If you persist in disobedience after God gives you your 00:34:59.73\00:35:02.70 wilderness time to learn to obey, He cannot bring you into 00:35:02.73\00:35:07.14 heaven deliberately sinning. 00:35:07.17\00:35:09.07 If the devil was kicked out for sinning, he is not going 00:35:09.10\00:35:11.34 to bring you in sinning. 00:35:11.37\00:35:13.48 That's what the Bible says. 00:35:13.51\00:35:15.14 You sinned and you were cast out. 00:35:15.18\00:35:17.51 So, the purpose of the plan of salvation, 00:35:17.55\00:35:20.05 "You will call His name Jesus," for He will what? 00:35:20.08\00:35:24.22 Save His people from-- in their sins? 00:35:24.25\00:35:27.72 From their sins. 00:35:27.76\00:35:29.26 Do you want to be saved in your sin? 00:35:29.29\00:35:31.26 Or don't you want to be saved from your sin? 00:35:31.29\00:35:32.86 My sin is a problem. 00:35:32.89\00:35:34.36 I want to saved from my sin, not in my sin. 00:35:34.36\00:35:37.20 But a lot of churches are teaching it 00:35:37.23\00:35:38.93 that He just kind of saves us. 00:35:38.97\00:35:40.47 We just bundle our sins with who we are. 00:35:40.50\00:35:42.24 We thank Him for His grace, and we're going to heaven that way. 00:35:42.27\00:35:45.21 Now I think there needs to be a transformation in the life, 00:35:45.24\00:35:48.11 but it must happen because of the blood of the Lamb, 00:35:48.14\00:35:51.68 because of love for the Lord. 00:35:51.71\00:35:53.31 See how the story helps us understand the theology 00:35:53.35\00:35:57.29 of how that works. 00:35:57.32\00:35:59.22 Timothy 2, verse 6, "God, who gave Himself a ransom for all, 00:35:59.25\00:36:05.09 to be testified in due time." 00:36:05.13\00:36:07.60 In Mark 10:44 and 45, "And whoever of you desires to be 00:36:07.60\00:36:11.60 first shall be slave of all. 00:36:11.63\00:36:14.17 For even the Son of Man did not come to serve, but to serve 00:36:14.20\00:36:17.44 and to give His life a ransom for many." 00:36:17.47\00:36:19.91 So, it's a question of who we want to serve. 00:36:19.94\00:36:22.74 Do we want to serve the Lord? 00:36:22.78\00:36:24.65 Or do we want to serve the devil? 00:36:24.68\00:36:26.65 Now, think about it. 00:36:26.68\00:36:28.28 When a person says, "It's tough being a Christian, I think I'd 00:36:28.32\00:36:30.82 like to give up," did the children of Israel ever say, 00:36:30.85\00:36:33.62 "We want to go back to Egypt"? 00:36:33.66\00:36:36.79 You and I looking back on that right now, we think, "Why in the 00:36:36.83\00:36:40.10 world would you want to go back and worship the Pharaoh's gods 00:36:40.13\00:36:43.83 and serve the pharaoh and make his bricks, buildings and work 00:36:43.87\00:36:49.37 in the clay pits of Egypt? 00:36:49.40\00:36:51.24 Why would you want that?" 00:36:51.27\00:36:52.94 It's amazing that here they are on their way 00:36:52.97\00:36:54.91 to the promised land. 00:36:54.94\00:36:56.51 God's feeding them with miracle bread every day. 00:36:56.54\00:36:58.48 They got water out of a rock. 00:36:58.51\00:37:00.18 His very presence is in their midst. 00:37:00.22\00:37:01.98 And they said, "We want to go back to Egypt." 00:37:02.02\00:37:04.69 And yet we know people who say, "I'm tired of following Jesus. 00:37:04.72\00:37:07.46 The Christian life is hard." 00:37:07.49\00:37:09.02 Well, I'll tell you, friends, it is hard. 00:37:09.06\00:37:10.43 Life is hard. 00:37:10.46\00:37:11.96 It is a lot harder to be lost than to be saved. 00:37:11.99\00:37:14.46 "The way of the transgressor is hard," the Bible says. 00:37:14.46\00:37:18.57 There is no rest for the wicked. 00:37:18.60\00:37:21.17 It is much harder to be lost. 00:37:21.20\00:37:23.34 Trust me. I've tried both. 00:37:23.37\00:37:25.57 It's harder to be lost, to have no peace. 00:37:25.61\00:37:29.01 It is so much better--life is tough. 00:37:29.04\00:37:30.78 It doesn't matter whether you're a Christian or an unbeliever. 00:37:30.81\00:37:32.75 There's going to be challenges, but it's a lot better 00:37:32.78\00:37:34.85 being a Christian. 00:37:34.88\00:37:36.28 Don't go back to Egypt. 00:37:36.32\00:37:37.92 So, all those things they went through, 00:37:37.95\00:37:39.45 they're lessons for us. 00:37:39.49\00:37:40.79 In Tuesday's lesson, it talks about the Sinai covenant. 00:37:40.82\00:37:44.63 Look at it. 00:37:44.66\00:37:46.09 It gives like an outline of eight things that happened there 00:37:46.13\00:37:48.26 in Exodus chapter 19 and on through 24. 00:37:48.30\00:37:52.53 It says, first they arrived at the encampment at Mount Sinai. 00:37:52.57\00:37:55.80 They had been delivered by the Lord, 00:37:55.84\00:37:57.67 and that's Exodus 19:1 and 2. 00:37:57.71\00:37:59.47 God proposes a covenant with Israel. 00:37:59.51\00:38:01.58 This is after they've been saved. 00:38:01.61\00:38:03.14 He's given them water. 00:38:03.18\00:38:04.48 He's given them bread. 00:38:04.51\00:38:06.08 He delivered them from the Amalekites who attacked them. 00:38:06.11\00:38:07.58 So, He's shown His love for them. 00:38:07.62\00:38:09.95 He's given them leadership. 00:38:09.98\00:38:12.05 Israel's response and acceptance of the covenant, 00:38:12.09\00:38:15.62 they're willing to listen. 00:38:15.66\00:38:17.83 Preparations for formally receiving the covenant-- 00:38:17.86\00:38:20.76 you know, God said, "I'm going to speak to you. 00:38:20.80\00:38:22.86 Wash yourselves. Wash your clothes. 00:38:22.90\00:38:25.67 Husbands and wives, you need to fast from intimacy." 00:38:25.70\00:38:29.44 You know, that was part of it. 00:38:29.47\00:38:31.37 And this is a special occasion. 00:38:31.41\00:38:33.07 By the way, Paul refers to that. 00:38:33.11\00:38:34.78 He said husbands and wives should not deny each other 00:38:34.81\00:38:37.21 unless they agree mutually. 00:38:37.25\00:38:40.78 And further, it should be limited, lest they're tempted. 00:38:40.82\00:38:44.85 But there was a time when God says, 00:38:44.89\00:38:46.65 "You're about to hear God speak. 00:38:46.69\00:38:49.82 You must present yourselves pure before the Lord 00:38:49.86\00:38:54.40 and not be distracted." 00:38:54.46\00:38:56.30 And then it says--so, there's a preparation for receiving 00:38:56.33\00:38:58.47 the Ten Commandments. 00:38:58.50\00:39:00.27 The proclamation of the Ten Commandments, 00:39:00.30\00:39:01.90 before God gives him the written transcript, he speaks it. 00:39:01.94\00:39:04.91 First they get the audio version. 00:39:04.94\00:39:06.94 Then they get the written version. 00:39:06.98\00:39:08.74 That's how covenants usually work. 00:39:08.78\00:39:10.38 You and I are going to make a covenant. 00:39:10.41\00:39:11.71 I'm going to buy your car. 00:39:11.75\00:39:13.11 So, you come to my house. 00:39:13.15\00:39:14.75 I advertised it on Craig's List. 00:39:14.78\00:39:16.38 I say I want 6,000. 00:39:16.42\00:39:17.95 You say, "Well, Doug, there's a couple of scratches 00:39:17.99\00:39:19.59 in the bumper," and so forth. 00:39:19.62\00:39:21.22 And you say, "I'll probably give you 5,500." 00:39:21.26\00:39:23.73 And I say, "No, I'll take 57." 00:39:23.76\00:39:28.36 And you act like that's too much. 00:39:28.40\00:39:30.07 You're really actually very happy, but you don't want to pay 00:39:30.10\00:39:32.17 more than you have to. 00:39:32.20\00:39:33.67 And so finally you kick the ground and say, "Okay." 00:39:33.70\00:39:36.07 I say, "All right, let me write it up." 00:39:36.10\00:39:39.17 So first you have the verbal agreement. 00:39:39.21\00:39:41.31 No sense making a contract if you haven't got 00:39:41.34\00:39:43.35 anything verbal, right? 00:39:43.38\00:39:45.11 Anyone in the law knows that. 00:39:45.15\00:39:46.51 First get a verbal agreement, or you'll be writing all the time. 00:39:46.55\00:39:48.38 Then you write it up. 00:39:48.42\00:39:49.88 So, God announces it verbally. 00:39:49.92\00:39:51.75 Then the Ten Commandments is the covenant that they have 00:39:51.79\00:39:54.12 agreed to at this point. 00:39:54.16\00:39:56.12 So, they get a written copy of what they've agreed to 00:39:56.16\00:39:59.06 in the covenant. 00:39:59.09\00:40:01.86 So then you've got the covenants. 00:40:01.90\00:40:03.73 The principals are spelled out in Exodus 20, and the 00:40:03.77\00:40:06.84 ratification of the covenant is Exodus 24, 1 through 18. 00:40:06.87\00:40:13.14 Matter of fact, let me look at the clock here. 00:40:13.17\00:40:15.71 Ah, I don't have time to read all that. 00:40:15.74\00:40:17.75 In Deuteronomy 29:10, "All of you stand today before the Lord 00:40:17.78\00:40:22.22 your God, your leaders, and your tribes, and all your elders, 00:40:22.25\00:40:25.19 and all your officers, and all the men of Israel, 00:40:25.22\00:40:27.52 your little ones, and your wives, also, 00:40:27.56\00:40:29.22 and the stranger who is in your camp." 00:40:29.26\00:40:30.93 So, He includes everybody. 00:40:30.96\00:40:32.56 "From the one who cuts your wood to the one 00:40:32.59\00:40:34.63 who draws your water." 00:40:34.66\00:40:36.50 The wood was for fire. 00:40:36.53\00:40:37.97 The water--notice that. 00:40:38.00\00:40:39.67 Baptism in the fire, baptism in the water. 00:40:39.70\00:40:41.97 "That you might enter into covenant with the Lord God, into 00:40:42.00\00:40:44.91 His oath, which the Lord your God makes with you this day, 00:40:44.94\00:40:48.51 that He may establish you today as a people for himself, that He 00:40:48.54\00:40:52.45 might be God to you, just as He has spoken to you and just as He 00:40:52.48\00:40:56.82 has sworn to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob." 00:40:56.85\00:41:00.42 Does God still today have a covenant with Israel? 00:41:00.46\00:41:05.73 Well, it says they broke the covenant. 00:41:06.23\00:41:09.23 But didn't God renew the covenant? 00:41:09.26\00:41:11.60 Well, that's a covenant with Gentiles. 00:41:11.63\00:41:13.54 Show me that. 00:41:13.57\00:41:15.24 It says, "A new covenant I will make after those days 00:41:15.27\00:41:17.27 with the house of Israel." 00:41:17.31\00:41:19.87 So, we're all still living under the new covenant, right? 00:41:19.91\00:41:22.21 It's still based on the Ten Commandments. 00:41:22.24\00:41:24.38 Says, "My law I will put in their hearts." 00:41:24.41\00:41:27.32 And it says it's based upon better promises. 00:41:27.35\00:41:29.52 We'll get to that in just a minute. 00:41:29.55\00:41:30.85 So, looking under Wednesday, "God and Israel," you read in 00:41:30.89\00:41:34.66 Exodus 19:5 and 6, "Now therefore if you will indeed 00:41:34.69\00:41:38.79 obey my voice and keep my covenant, you will be a special 00:41:38.83\00:41:42.70 treasure to me above all people. 00:41:42.73\00:41:46.27 For all the earth is mine, and you will be to me a kingdom of 00:41:46.30\00:41:49.54 priests and a holy nation." 00:41:49.57\00:41:52.07 These are the words that you will speak 00:41:52.11\00:41:53.91 to the children of Israel." 00:41:53.94\00:41:55.48 Now, what good would we be if we were a church full of pastors, 00:41:55.51\00:41:59.85 if every one of you was a pastor? 00:41:59.88\00:42:01.98 And we all got together, and we talked about how good it is 00:42:02.02\00:42:04.02 to pastor? 00:42:04.05\00:42:05.82 What would we know about pastoring if we were all 00:42:05.85\00:42:07.52 pastors, and we just kind of pastored each other? 00:42:07.56\00:42:11.99 The idea of being a pastor is that you then go pastor sheep. 00:42:12.03\00:42:16.36 If all the shepherds get together and talk about how 00:42:16.40\00:42:18.17 wonderful it is to be shepherds, and you have no sheep-- 00:42:18.20\00:42:21.37 so when He calls them a nation of kings and priests, 00:42:21.40\00:42:23.77 what's the implication? 00:42:23.81\00:42:26.31 Israel was to be a light to the world. 00:42:26.34\00:42:29.61 They were to be priests like in the days of Solomon, 00:42:29.64\00:42:32.61 when all nations came to Israel to learn about their God. 00:42:32.65\00:42:36.08 And all the people that--see, God strategically located Israel 00:42:36.12\00:42:39.72 at a land bridge between Asia and Africa and Europe, 00:42:39.75\00:42:45.89 and all the traffic went through the land of Israel. 00:42:45.93\00:42:48.70 That's why some of the kings became very, very wealthy 00:42:48.73\00:42:51.43 from the tolls and tariffs that went through there. 00:42:51.47\00:42:54.34 That's why the Romans wanted Israel. 00:42:54.37\00:42:55.97 You think, "Why would they want that place? 00:42:56.00\00:42:57.47 Everyone is fighting over it." 00:42:57.51\00:42:58.94 It was the land bridge, and it was very important 00:42:58.97\00:43:00.94 territory--not to mention, back then it was a land flowing 00:43:00.98\00:43:03.21 with milk and honey. 00:43:03.24\00:43:04.95 So, the idea was as the nations of the world were on their 00:43:04.98\00:43:08.02 trade, and they'd come through Israel, every Israelite was 00:43:08.05\00:43:11.12 to be a priest, to tell the others about God. 00:43:11.15\00:43:15.26 And Moses said, "The other nations will see you, and 00:43:15.29\00:43:17.83 they'll say, 'What nation is there that has such just laws, 00:43:17.86\00:43:20.93 that has God in their midst?'" 00:43:20.96\00:43:22.83 They were to be witnesses. 00:43:22.86\00:43:24.57 That's why He said, "You're to be a nation of priests." 00:43:24.60\00:43:26.84 Now, was that just for Israel, or is that for us today?" 00:43:26.87\00:43:30.21 Well, you are Israel today, if you're a Christian. 00:43:30.24\00:43:33.48 I mean, I think God still has a special plan for the Jewish 00:43:33.51\00:43:35.71 people and Israel, but I think you are Israel. 00:43:35.74\00:43:39.95 If you are Christ's, you are Abraham's seed. 00:43:39.98\00:43:41.92 He is not a Jew which is one outwardly. 00:43:41.95\00:43:43.99 He is a Jew who is one inwardly. 00:43:44.02\00:43:46.42 And it is not circumcision in the flesh. 00:43:46.45\00:43:48.32 It is circumcision in the heart. 00:43:48.36\00:43:49.92 This is what the scripture teaches, right? 00:43:49.96\00:43:51.63 We are grafted in. 00:43:51.66\00:43:53.09 Paul says you and I are grafted into the stalk of Israel. 00:43:53.13\00:43:56.26 We're grafted into that tree. 00:43:56.30\00:43:58.30 The book we read is a book written by Jewish authors. 00:43:58.33\00:44:01.57 There are a couple of very minor exceptions. 00:44:01.60\00:44:03.97 And so the covenant that they made, 00:44:04.01\00:44:06.31 we get the benefit from that. 00:44:06.34\00:44:09.44 And so we are to be a nation of kings and priests. 00:44:09.48\00:44:12.88 And look at how Peter says it. 00:44:12.91\00:44:14.22 1 Peter 2:9, "But you are a chosen generation, a royal 00:44:14.25\00:44:17.92 priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people." 00:44:17.95\00:44:21.26 Is Peter talking to Jews or to Christians? 00:44:21.29\00:44:24.79 Christians. 00:44:24.83\00:44:26.26 We are a nation of priests. 00:44:26.29\00:44:27.76 It's the same thing God said to Moses. 00:44:27.83\00:44:29.76 This is His plan, that His church, we become priests 00:44:29.80\00:44:33.90 to the world. 00:44:33.94\00:44:35.44 I say priests, I don't mean in the sense 00:44:35.47\00:44:37.11 that you're carrying on rituals. 00:44:37.14\00:44:38.54 I mean in that you're advocates, you're teachers, you're like the 00:44:38.57\00:44:40.71 ancient Levites in that you're sharing the Word of God. 00:44:40.74\00:44:45.01 It says we are a holy nation. 00:44:45.05\00:44:49.72 You read in Revelation 1:5 and 6, 00:44:49.75\00:44:52.15 "And from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, 00:44:52.19\00:44:54.36 the firstborn from the dead, and ruler over the kings 00:44:54.39\00:44:57.03 of the earth, to Him who loved us and washed us from 00:44:57.06\00:44:59.83 our sins in His own blood and has made us kings and priests 00:44:59.86\00:45:05.13 to His God and Father. 00:45:05.17\00:45:07.60 To Him be glory and dominion forever and ever." 00:45:07.64\00:45:09.70 Is that clear? 00:45:09.74\00:45:12.17 Does that just happen when we get to heaven, or are we to be a 00:45:12.21\00:45:14.48 nation of priests now? 00:45:14.51\00:45:16.71 Romans 3, verse 19, "We know that whatever the law says, it 00:45:16.75\00:45:20.58 says to those who are under the law, that every mouth might be 00:45:20.62\00:45:23.12 stopped, and all the world might become guilty before God. 00:45:23.15\00:45:26.79 Therefore by the deeds of the law, no flesh is justified 00:45:26.82\00:45:29.92 in His sight. 00:45:29.96\00:45:31.26 For by the law is the knowledge of sin, but now the 00:45:31.29\00:45:34.76 righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being 00:45:34.83\00:45:38.30 witnessed by the law and the prophets, even the righteousness 00:45:38.33\00:45:41.87 of God through faith in Jesus Christ and on all who believe. 00:45:41.90\00:45:46.41 For there is no difference. 00:45:46.44\00:45:48.14 For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." 00:45:48.18\00:45:50.51 It doesn't matter whether you are a Jew or a Gentile. 00:45:50.55\00:45:53.15 We're all saved now by that promise, that covenant. 00:45:53.18\00:45:56.32 That's our last section, under Thursday, "Promises, Promises." 00:45:56.35\00:46:02.02 So, Moses gives the Ten Commandments. 00:46:02.06\00:46:04.86 Now first let's go to Exodus 19, verse 7. 00:46:04.89\00:46:08.66 "So Moses came, and he called the elders of the people, and he 00:46:08.70\00:46:11.50 laid before them all the words the Lord commanded him. 00:46:11.53\00:46:15.07 Then all the people answered and said, 'All the Lord has spoken, 00:46:15.10\00:46:19.14 we will do.'" 00:46:19.17\00:46:20.74 All right, so they are making a promise. 00:46:20.78\00:46:23.21 Did they keep their promise? 00:46:23.24\00:46:25.61 One of those promises says, "Do not make graven images." 00:46:25.65\00:46:28.68 While Moses is getting the Ten Commandments, 00:46:28.72\00:46:30.65 did they make a graven image? 00:46:30.69\00:46:32.85 And it said, you know, don't commit adultery, but it says 00:46:32.89\00:46:34.92 that Aaron--the people were naked. 00:46:34.96\00:46:37.79 And they had a--it says they worshiped, 00:46:37.83\00:46:39.56 and then they rose up to play. 00:46:39.59\00:46:42.30 And you leave it to your mind what happened there, 00:46:42.33\00:46:44.40 but it wasn't a traditional worship service. 00:46:44.43\00:46:50.91 Yeah, I won't say anymore. 00:46:50.94\00:46:54.94 So, the people promised, "All the Lord has said, we will do." 00:46:54.98\00:46:57.28 Now go to Exodus 24. 00:46:57.31\00:47:00.25 "Now he said to Moses, 'Come up to the Lord, you and Aaron, 00:47:00.28\00:47:02.68 Nadab, and Abihu, and the 70 elders of Israel 00:47:02.72\00:47:05.25 and worship from afar." 00:47:05.29\00:47:07.12 They weren't to come as close. 00:47:07.16\00:47:09.32 "And Moses alone shall come up near the Lord." 00:47:09.36\00:47:11.69 Moses was a mediator. 00:47:11.73\00:47:13.83 What is Jesus? 00:47:13.86\00:47:15.56 He's our mediator. 00:47:15.60\00:47:17.53 Some of you remember the old gas stoves that had three settings. 00:47:17.57\00:47:21.34 Low, high, and what? 00:47:21.37\00:47:24.31 Medium. 00:47:24.34\00:47:25.64 In the middle. 00:47:25.67\00:47:26.98 That's where you get the word medium. 00:47:27.01\00:47:28.41 It's in the middle. 00:47:28.44\00:47:29.98 And Moses is in the middle between God and the people. 00:47:30.01\00:47:32.01 Jesus is the mediator. 00:47:32.05\00:47:34.38 I love that story where Christ is transfigured. 00:47:34.42\00:47:36.62 And one day he goes from talking with the disciples 00:47:36.65\00:47:38.79 to talking to God. 00:47:38.82\00:47:40.52 Moses and Elijah and back again. 00:47:40.56\00:47:42.36 It's like Jesus is the ladder that goes between heaven 00:47:42.39\00:47:44.96 and earth, which of course, is what Jacob dreamed about. 00:47:44.99\00:47:48.50 And so he says, "Come up to the Lord. 00:47:48.53\00:47:51.03 Moses alone will come near me, but you shall not come near nor 00:47:51.07\00:47:55.04 shall the people go up with him. 00:47:55.07\00:47:57.17 So, Moses came and told the people all the words of the 00:47:57.21\00:48:00.11 Lord, and all the judgments, and all the people answered 00:48:00.14\00:48:03.51 with one voice--" 00:48:03.55\00:48:05.25 Here's the promise of the people. 00:48:05.28\00:48:07.25 They're saying, "We agree to the covenant. 00:48:07.28\00:48:09.15 All the words the Lord has said, we will do." 00:48:09.18\00:48:12.29 When I do a wedding, and the bride is there, and the groom is 00:48:12.32\00:48:15.49 there, and at some point I will look at them, 00:48:15.52\00:48:17.66 and everything gets real quiet, and they'll say, "I do." 00:48:17.69\00:48:21.40 Why? 00:48:21.43\00:48:23.10 Because there's a covenant. 00:48:23.13\00:48:24.67 And I'll look at the man, and he'll say, "I do." 00:48:24.70\00:48:27.10 And usually, hopefully they're real excited to 00:48:27.14\00:48:28.94 say, "I do," right? 00:48:28.97\00:48:30.91 If they're not happy about it, 00:48:30.94\00:48:32.61 then I ought to tell them to pause. 00:48:32.64\00:48:34.58 So, that's a covenant. 00:48:34.61\00:48:36.75 God has given the Ten Commandments, making a covenant 00:48:36.78\00:48:39.78 with the people, but the people's promises broke down. 00:48:39.81\00:48:44.85 Now we're under the same law, but better promises, 00:48:44.89\00:48:48.59 God's promise. 00:48:48.62\00:48:50.23 He says, "I will write my law in their hearts. 00:48:50.26\00:48:52.59 Same law, but instead of the people saying, "I will," 00:48:52.63\00:48:55.53 God says, "I will do it." 00:48:55.56\00:48:57.83 It's based on His promise. 00:48:57.87\00:48:59.17 Can you say amen? 00:48:59.20\00:49:00.84 All right, I have more I could say, 00:49:00.87\00:49:02.57 but the clock is disagreeing with me. 00:49:02.60\00:49:05.24 And so I important to share it with others. 00:49:53.12\00:49:56.36 ¤¤¤ 00:49:57.76\00:49:59.96 announcer: Amazing Facts, Changed Lives. 00:50:00.00\00:50:03.57 male: When I was 15, I bought my first bag of marijuana 00:50:07.40\00:50:10.31 out of curiosity. 00:50:10.34\00:50:12.11 And from the age of 15 on to 23 was a constant experimentation 00:50:12.14\00:50:18.48 with different substances. 00:50:18.51\00:50:20.75 By the time I was 23, there was not a drug I had not tried. 00:50:20.78\00:50:25.05 I had worn myself out searching for happiness. 00:50:25.09\00:50:28.22 And one day I came home tired as usual, 00:50:28.26\00:50:31.93 and I started drinking. 00:50:31.96\00:50:34.00 And as usual, after I started drinking, I started looking 00:50:34.00\00:50:38.13 for a higher buzz. 00:50:38.17\00:50:41.24 Someone came by with some Xanax. 00:50:41.27\00:50:45.07 Someone also came by with something else that I liked, 00:50:45.11\00:50:48.38 and that was cocaine. 00:50:48.41\00:50:50.41 This time, not thinking, I took the whole thing. 00:50:50.45\00:50:53.85 So, I went to bed about 5 in the afternoon. 00:50:53.88\00:50:57.15 My roommate went off to work that night. 00:50:57.19\00:50:59.82 When he came back from work the next day, though, he noticed 00:50:59.85\00:51:03.36 something was wrong 'cause I was still in bed 00:51:03.39\00:51:05.43 in the same position. 00:51:05.46\00:51:07.56 He tried to wake me up, and he couldn't wake me up. 00:51:07.60\00:51:12.13 When my parents found me, they found me curled up in the fetal 00:51:12.17\00:51:16.34 position in my hospital room, unconscious still, and I stayed 00:51:16.37\00:51:22.64 unconscious in this coma-like state for the next week. 00:51:22.68\00:51:27.22 I stayed the next month in the hospital, slowly getting better, 00:51:27.25\00:51:33.42 to where I could sit up in bed, and I had to learn 00:51:33.46\00:51:35.52 to walk again. 00:51:35.56\00:51:37.33 But my parents found this one facility out in the hills 00:51:37.36\00:51:40.06 of Tennessee. 00:51:40.10\00:51:41.96 I had to admit that I liked the place, but they were Christian. 00:51:42.00\00:51:47.10 And even worse than that, I said yes when they asked me 00:51:47.14\00:51:50.37 if I wanted to go to church that week. 00:51:50.41\00:51:52.97 Before the pastor said the benediction, I was so excited 00:51:53.01\00:51:55.78 because I was planning my escape. 00:51:55.81\00:51:58.28 And so after everybody was all in bed that night, I made sure 00:51:58.31\00:52:02.08 that they were snoring and that they were asleep. 00:52:02.12\00:52:05.55 I went into the kitchen and stole a few bananas, 00:52:05.59\00:52:08.32 got my backpack ready. 00:52:08.36\00:52:10.96 I figured I could get sober on my own. 00:52:10.99\00:52:13.76 My favorite song was, "I Did It My Way." 00:52:13.80\00:52:16.70 Of course, my definition of sober was a nice supply 00:52:16.73\00:52:22.57 of marijuana each day and alcohol on the weekends. 00:52:22.60\00:52:26.27 And of course, if I had a bad hangover, I might need some 00:52:26.31\00:52:29.01 of those relaxing pills to take. 00:52:29.04\00:52:31.51 But other than that, that would be it. 00:52:31.55\00:52:35.22 So, here I am, stranded on the street in the big city 00:52:35.25\00:52:38.12 of Houston, my bag of clothes is gone. 00:52:38.15\00:52:41.72 My cell phone was gone. 00:52:41.76\00:52:43.26 My wallet, my bus ticket's gone. 00:52:43.29\00:52:45.06 I don't have anything but the shirt on my back. 00:52:45.09\00:52:47.56 It's at that point that this man comes up to me, 00:52:47.60\00:52:50.20 this mysterious man. 00:52:50.23\00:52:52.03 He's actually very short and appears to be homeless. 00:52:52.07\00:52:55.24 And he led me to some food and even a place to stay that night. 00:52:55.27\00:52:59.67 Looking back, it is my firm conclusion that 00:52:59.71\00:53:03.38 that was an angel. 00:53:03.41\00:53:05.28 So my dad was able to come down to Houston and pick me up 00:53:05.31\00:53:08.85 and take me back up to the health retreat at Wildwood 00:53:08.88\00:53:11.82 in Tennessee. 00:53:11.85\00:53:13.66 They had a satellite. 00:53:13.69\00:53:16.36 On this channel there was a man named Doug Batchelor. 00:53:16.39\00:53:19.69 I liked what I heard. 00:53:19.73\00:53:21.56 I liked the way he explained the Bible. 00:53:21.60\00:53:23.57 It was so simple, and he also had an experience 00:53:23.60\00:53:25.77 similar to mine. 00:53:25.80\00:53:28.17 And I talked to Lou about him, and they happened to have 00:53:28.20\00:53:30.41 a whole set of cassette tapes. 00:53:30.44\00:53:33.44 I would wake up at 4 in the morning sometimes, and I would 00:53:33.48\00:53:36.91 get up, and I would watch two of those videos before breakfast. 00:53:36.95\00:53:40.85 I would sit this close to the TV watching what Doug Batchelor 00:53:40.88\00:53:44.49 was saying, just eating up every word of it. 00:53:44.52\00:53:46.89 I was so tired of hearing lies and even believing my own lies, 00:53:46.92\00:53:50.23 that it was so wonderful to find something that was solid 00:53:50.26\00:53:55.16 and that I could rely on. 00:53:55.20\00:53:57.20 And so when I got home from rehab, in my local church, 00:53:57.23\00:54:02.14 Eric Flickinger from Amazing Facts was holding 00:54:02.17\00:54:04.71 an evangelistic series. 00:54:04.74\00:54:06.78 They solidified my conviction, and it was then I made 00:54:06.81\00:54:10.98 the absolute decision to follow Jesus. 00:54:11.01\00:54:14.78 I praise the Lord Jesus Christ for Amazing Facts. 00:54:14.82\00:54:18.92 I praise God for Amazing Facts because they're so Bible based. 00:54:18.95\00:54:23.79 They send out evangelists who are willing to teach 00:54:23.83\00:54:26.46 the truth to people. 00:54:26.49\00:54:28.53 I'm thankful that they're preaching right now all over 00:54:28.56\00:54:31.93 the world, changing lives, just as they changed mine. 00:54:31.97\00:54:36.54 announcer: Together, we have spread the gospel 00:54:38.51\00:54:40.91 much farther than ever before. 00:54:40.94\00:54:43.65 Thank you for your support. 00:54:43.68\00:54:46.75 ¤¤¤ 00:54:46.78\00:54:49.95 ¤¤¤ 00:54:50.32\00:54:55.92 Casey: I would go out and go drinking, 00:54:55.96\00:54:57.96 and I just wanted to have fun. 00:54:57.99\00:54:59.96 I was working a lot at the time, going to school and just 00:55:00.06\00:55:04.07 wasn't really interested in really following God. 00:55:04.10\00:55:07.90 I would have people tell me, "Why don't you just have faith?" 00:55:07.94\00:55:10.07 if I was going through some type of trial during my life. 00:55:10.11\00:55:13.74 I didn't understand what that meant. 00:55:13.78\00:55:15.74 I would pray, but I didn't feel any less stressed about 00:55:15.78\00:55:21.35 or worried about a situation. 00:55:21.38\00:55:23.39 I didn't understand God's Word. 00:55:23.42\00:55:25.39 It seemed like it contradicted itself, 00:55:25.42\00:55:28.36 and so I struggled with that a lot. 00:55:28.39\00:55:31.19 My ex-husband and I, we had began dating. 00:55:31.23\00:55:35.23 And within seven months, we got married, which was really fast. 00:55:35.26\00:55:40.10 After we got married, he was very disrespectful, 00:55:40.14\00:55:43.94 and he was cheating a lot. 00:55:43.97\00:55:49.04 Found out he was cheating when I was pregnant with my first son. 00:55:49.08\00:55:52.41 I tried to get him help, and he checked himself 00:55:52.45\00:55:55.25 out of rehab a week later. 00:55:55.28\00:55:57.29 Living homeless in our hometown, he was saying and doing things 00:55:57.32\00:56:02.32 that he shouldn't be doing. 00:56:02.36\00:56:04.23 He was committing crimes. 00:56:04.26\00:56:06.13 It always started with alcohol and then pot or marijuana, 00:56:06.16\00:56:09.90 and then he would go to the meth. 00:56:09.93\00:56:12.20 So, it was just a really ugly chain of things, and that's why 00:56:12.23\00:56:16.77 I moved in with my sister. 00:56:16.81\00:56:18.97 We were staying with her, and her husband and I started doing 00:56:19.01\00:56:25.98 studies with my sister. 00:56:26.01\00:56:27.78 She was studying with some people, 00:56:27.82\00:56:29.35 and I joined the studies. 00:56:29.38\00:56:31.52 And I learned a lot of different things that I had never known 00:56:31.55\00:56:35.46 about the Bible, and it started opening up to me 00:56:35.49\00:56:38.23 and making sense. 00:56:38.26\00:56:40.03 So, my sister had installed the satellite, 00:56:40.06\00:56:43.97 and I found Amazing Facts. 00:56:44.00\00:56:46.47 The one thing I love about Doug Batchelor is he uses his own 00:56:46.50\00:56:50.31 life situations, and he uses really good stories to connect, 00:56:50.34\00:56:56.78 stories from the Bible or teachings. 00:56:56.81\00:57:00.65 I didn't understand why he was always bringing up the Sabbath 00:57:00.68\00:57:03.05 and why it was so important. 00:57:03.08\00:57:04.79 And I was asking my sister, "Why does he keep talking 00:57:04.82\00:57:06.89 about the Sabbath?" 00:57:06.92\00:57:09.29 And later on I found out, through studying more, and 00:57:09.32\00:57:13.70 listening to his teachings about it, the truth about the Sabbath. 00:57:13.73\00:57:18.33 I know that I started changing as a person. 00:57:18.37\00:57:20.64 I wanted to follow the truth. 00:57:20.67\00:57:22.67 I wanted to have a closer relationship with Christ 00:57:22.70\00:57:27.04 and be closer to God. 00:57:27.08\00:57:28.78 So, after doing the studies and learning the truths that I had 00:57:28.81\00:57:32.05 been learning, I decided to take that next step and give my life 00:57:32.08\00:57:36.75 to Christ through baptism. 00:57:36.79\00:57:39.39 Besides learning these messages, these truths about the Bible 00:57:39.42\00:57:43.46 through Amazing Facts, all of these wonderful people from 00:57:43.49\00:57:47.96 Amazing Facts, the way they've reached out to me, they really 00:57:48.00\00:57:51.13 showed me that they have caring hearts, that they're 00:57:51.17\00:57:54.44 Christ-like, because that's what a Christian is. 00:57:54.47\00:57:58.37 My name is Casey. 00:57:58.41\00:58:00.14 Thank you for changing my life. 00:58:00.18\00:58:03.24 ¤¤¤ 00:58:03.28\00:58:13.25 ¤¤¤ 00:58:13.29\00:58:23.26
