begin at 7 p.m. 00:02:36.85\00:02:39.72 Pacific Time on Friday. 00:02:39.75\00:02:42.19 Doug: Yeah, I was excited when I just pulled into 00:02:42.22\00:02:44.09 the church parking lot that I saw on either side 00:02:44.13\00:02:45.99 of the entrance, it's got an advertisement, 00:02:46.03\00:02:48.40 "Revelation Now!" 00:02:48.43\00:02:50.67 And we're going to be presenting a global in Revelation 00:03:06.58\00:03:09.85 and how it relates to what's going on in the 00:03:09.88\00:03:13.15 world today and how people can be ready for that. 00:03:13.19\00:03:15.82 And you can happening with 00:03:39.48\00:03:41.75 the pandemic and the social unrest and the 00:03:41.78\00:03:45.52 political polarization and the fires and the floods 00:03:45.55\00:03:48.99 and the economy. 00:03:49.02\00:03:51.16 People are wondering what in the world is going on. 00:03:51.19\00:03:53.86 And so this is a great time to share the gospel. 00:03:53.90\00:03:56.26 We won't always have the freedom we have now. 00:03:56.30\00:03:58.27 Invite your friends to go to revelationnow. 00:03:58.30\00:04:00.90 It'll also be on 3ABN and AFTV as well as streaming 00:04:00.94\00:04:04.74 through the Internet. 00:04:04.77\00:04:06.81 Jean: Okay, so that's Friday, October 23, is 00:04:06.84\00:04:09.91 when that begins. 00:04:09.94\00:04:11.75 Well, Pastor Doug, should we take a look at our lesson? 00:04:11.78\00:04:13.78 It's an important one. 00:04:13.82\00:04:15.68 We do have a memory verse and the memory verse comes 00:04:15.72\00:04:17.82 from Mark chapter 10, verse 52, and the words of 00:04:17.85\00:04:20.66 Jesus: "Then Jesus said to him, 'Go your way; your 00:04:20.69\00:04:22.62 faith has made you well.' 00:04:22.66\00:04:24.83 And immediately he received his sight and he followed Jesus on 00:04:24.86\00:04:27.66 the road." 00:04:27.66\00:04:29.66 Doug: Now that story's going to come up a little 00:04:29.70\00:04:31.40 later in the lesson. 00:04:31.43\00:04:33.23 It's where Jesus heals Bartimaeus but, in the 00:04:33.27\00:04:35.14 first section here, and we're learning, of course, 00:04:35.17\00:04:37.37 lessons about the Master. 00:04:37.41\00:04:39.34 Now, we'll be going to Genesis because we believe 00:04:39.37\00:04:42.21 Jesus does not appear really for the first time 00:04:42.24\00:04:45.38 in the New Testament; you find Christ even in the 00:04:45.41\00:04:48.42 Old Testament. 00:04:48.45\00:04:50.05 These are called Christophanies where God, 00:04:50.09\00:04:52.42 the Son, was speaking to man in the Old Testament. 00:04:52.45\00:04:55.39 And, you know, all things that were made were made 00:04:55.42\00:04:58.83 by Him, being Jesus, and that would include Adam and Eve. 00:04:58.86\00:05:01.40 But you see right at the beginning when Adam and 00:05:01.43\00:05:05.80 Eve sinned, the response of what they did, or I 00:05:05.83\00:05:09.67 should say Jesus' response to sin was one of compassion. 00:05:09.70\00:05:13.24 Their response was shame and blame and they ran. 00:05:13.27\00:05:17.31 And you can see here in Genesis chapter 3 and I'll 00:05:17.35\00:05:20.55 read verses 8 through 10: "And they heard the sound 00:05:20.58\00:05:23.82 of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of 00:05:23.85\00:05:26.25 the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from 00:05:26.29\00:05:29.36 the presence of the Lord among the trees in the garden. 00:05:29.39\00:05:32.86 And then the Lord called to Adam and said, 'Where are you?' 00:05:32.89\00:05:36.53 And he said, 'Well, I heard your voice in the 00:05:36.56\00:05:40.07 garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I 00:05:40.10\00:05:42.14 hid myself.'" 00:05:42.17\00:05:43.74 Now, when God asks Adam, "Where are you?" it's not that God 00:05:43.77\00:05:46.81 really didn't know. 00:05:46.84\00:05:50.01 You can read, I think it's Psalm 137, you know, 00:05:50.05\00:05:52.78 "Where shall I flee from Your presence?" 00:05:52.81\00:05:55.18 We can't hide from God. 00:05:55.22\00:05:57.19 Reminds me of when I play hide-and-seek with the 00:05:57.22\00:05:58.99 kids in the house when they were little and, you 00:05:59.02\00:06:02.09 know, I'd say, "Here I come," and you'd go and 00:06:02.12\00:06:04.46 I'd see their feet sticking out from behind 00:06:04.49\00:06:06.80 the curtains and say, "Where are you?" 00:06:06.83\00:06:09.23 You know, I knew where they were. 00:06:09.26\00:06:11.43 But, you know, God sometimes asks these 00:06:11.47\00:06:14.17 rhetorical questions. 00:06:14.20\00:06:16.04 You've disobeyed, where has it brought you? 00:06:16.07\00:06:18.41 is really what He's asking. 00:06:18.44\00:06:20.61 And it's interesting that the first question that 00:06:20.64\00:06:23.31 God asks in the Bible is "Where are you?" 00:06:23.35\00:06:25.88 And--'cause man ran from God. 00:06:25.91\00:06:28.22 When you get to the New Testament the first 00:06:28.25\00:06:30.59 question that is asked in the Gospel is the wise men 00:06:30.62\00:06:33.32 looking for Jesus, they say, "Where is He?" 00:06:33.36\00:06:36.56 And the first question in the Bible is when the 00:06:36.59\00:06:39.79 devil questions God's Word: "Hath God said?" 00:06:39.83\00:06:43.87 And so when we doubt God's Word, it can lead to sin 00:06:43.90\00:06:46.80 and it separates us from God. 00:06:46.84\00:06:50.37 Jean: You know, Pastor Doug, just those three 00:06:50.41\00:06:52.94 little interesting facts that you brought up about 00:06:52.97\00:06:54.91 the first questions in the Bible, the Bible begins by 00:06:54.94\00:06:57.45 describing a problem but then we find a solution in 00:06:57.48\00:07:00.25 the New Testament, and the solution to the problem 00:07:00.28\00:07:02.88 is Jesus. 00:07:02.92\00:07:04.75 He's the solution to the problem. 00:07:04.79\00:07:06.79 Now, Isaiah chapter 59, verse 2, emphasizes why 00:07:06.82\00:07:09.02 sin is such a problem. 00:07:09.06\00:07:11.39 We read there, "But your iniquities have separated 00:07:11.43\00:07:14.00 you from your God, and your sins have hidden His 00:07:14.00\00:07:16.87 face from you so that He will not hear." 00:07:16.90\00:07:20.44 So part of the problem with sin is it separates 00:07:20.47\00:07:22.80 us from God. 00:07:22.84\00:07:24.61 God is a holy God, sin cannot dwell in the 00:07:24.64\00:07:26.57 presence of God and so we find Adam and Eve running, 00:07:26.61\00:07:29.08 hiding from God, and yet despite their sin, God 00:07:29.11\00:07:31.68 comes to look for them. 00:07:31.71\00:07:33.52 God is the one who initiates this reunion. 00:07:33.55\00:07:35.85 He's the one coming to look for them, and that's 00:07:35.88\00:07:38.09 the way it's been throughout human history. 00:07:38.12\00:07:39.89 God has been reaching out, calling us to come back to Him. 00:07:39.92\00:07:43.53 Doug: Yeah, and sin actually separates not 00:07:43.56\00:07:45.89 just us from God. 00:07:45.93\00:07:47.86 Sin separates from each other. 00:07:47.93\00:07:49.83 I know you've done some marriage counseling. 00:07:49.86\00:07:51.83 In almost every case the friction is caused by sin 00:07:51.87\00:07:55.34 and selfishness, typically pride, which is the sort 00:07:55.37\00:07:58.81 of the mother of all sins, and sin not only separates 00:07:58.84\00:08:02.44 us from God, sin separates us from each other. 00:08:02.48\00:08:05.78 Sin separates us from us. 00:08:05.81\00:08:08.12 You know, a lot of people have shame and guilt. 00:08:08.15\00:08:10.79 They, you know, try to run away from themselves 00:08:10.82\00:08:13.02 because they don't want to live with themselves. 00:08:13.05\00:08:15.82 And--but Jesus, His love is reconciling. 00:08:15.86\00:08:20.43 It does the opposite of sin. 00:08:20.46\00:08:22.50 It reconnects us with God which is the beginning to 00:08:22.53\00:08:25.23 reconnecting with each other and even finally 00:08:25.27\00:08:28.24 feeling joy and peace that we are forgiven, we're 00:08:28.27\00:08:30.61 new creatures. 00:08:30.64\00:08:32.64 We're united with ourselves, you might say. 00:08:32.67\00:08:34.48 Jean: So the Bible gives us this hope. 00:08:34.51\00:08:37.35 It talks about the first Adam which, of course, is 00:08:37.38\00:08:39.35 the father of all and through his disobedience, 00:08:39.38\00:08:41.92 through his sin, death comes because all have 00:08:41.95\00:08:46.05 sinned and then we get to the New Testament. 00:08:46.09\00:08:48.89 We read about a second Adam and Paul, in 00:08:48.92\00:08:51.19 particular, illustrates this for us, how that 00:08:51.23\00:08:53.83 through the second Adam, Christ, we 00:08:53.86\00:08:55.90 find forgiveness. 00:08:55.93\00:08:57.73 So the first Adam brings death, but the second Adam 00:08:57.77\00:08:59.77 brings life and peace. 00:08:59.80\00:09:01.70 Doug: Why don't you look up--I didn't have it in 00:09:01.74\00:09:03.61 my notes. 00:09:03.64\00:09:05.21 You know, the first prophecy in the Bible, it 00:09:05.24\00:09:07.01 talks about that reconciliation. 00:09:07.04\00:09:08.68 Genesis 3:15, I believe it's Genesis 3:15, where 00:09:08.71\00:09:10.98 He talks about, you know, the curse and the enmity. 00:09:11.01\00:09:15.65 Jean: And it's God talking to the devil in the form 00:09:15.68\00:09:18.95 of the serpent. 00:09:18.99\00:09:20.66 He says, "I'll put enmity between you and the 00:09:20.69\00:09:22.49 woman," the woman being the church, "and between 00:09:22.52\00:09:24.89 your seed and her seed. 00:09:24.93\00:09:27.10 He shall bruise your head and you shall bruise His heel." 00:09:27.13\00:09:30.97 Doug: So here you've got the first prophecy that 00:09:31.00\00:09:32.90 the seed of the woman, this promised seed, that 00:09:32.93\00:09:35.37 woman that brings forth the man-child there in 00:09:35.40\00:09:37.44 Revelation, He is going to be the solution for the 00:09:37.47\00:09:40.11 problem began by the first Adam. 00:09:40.14\00:09:44.05 Christ is going to be the second Adam, you know, in 00:09:44.08\00:09:47.22 the same way that children often come in the image of 00:09:47.25\00:09:49.65 their parents, Jesus, in a sense, was a type of Adam 00:09:49.68\00:09:52.79 but He's the second Adam. 00:09:52.82\00:09:56.66 And maybe I'll read Romans 5 and this is a lengthy 00:09:56.69\00:10:00.10 passage but it's very important, a lot of good 00:10:00.13\00:10:02.16 theology in here. 00:10:02.20\00:10:04.10 Romans chapter 5, verse 12 to 19, Paul is writing 00:10:04.13\00:10:07.07 here: "Therefore just as through one man," Adam, 00:10:07.10\00:10:10.27 "sin entered the world, and death came through 00:10:10.31\00:10:13.41 sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all 00:10:13.44\00:10:16.61 sinned--(For until the law sin was in the world, but 00:10:16.64\00:10:20.08 sin is not imputed where there's no law.)" 00:10:20.12\00:10:23.69 In other words, the law had to exist if sin existed, so, 00:10:23.72\00:10:26.12 all the way back at the beginning when God said to 00:10:26.15\00:10:28.92 Cain, you know, "Sin lies at your door," must have 00:10:28.96\00:10:32.26 been a sin to murder way back there in the beginning. 00:10:32.29\00:10:35.06 "(Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to 00:10:35.10\00:10:38.20 Moses, even over those who had not sinned according 00:10:38.23\00:10:41.34 to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who 00:10:41.37\00:10:43.77 is a type,)" here Paul says Adam is a type, "(of 00:10:43.81\00:10:47.34 Him who was to come,)" meaning Christ. 00:10:47.38\00:10:49.51 It's interesting that Adam fell in the Garden, Jesus 00:10:49.54\00:10:55.22 overcame in the desert. 00:10:55.25\00:10:58.62 Just, I mean, Adam fell into sin surrounded by 00:10:58.65\00:11:01.16 every good thing to eat. 00:11:01.19\00:11:03.39 He didn't need to eat the forbidden fruit. 00:11:03.43\00:11:05.39 Jesus resisted when He was surrounded by rocks and 00:11:05.43\00:11:08.86 dirt and the hunger and the thirst and fasting. 00:11:08.90\00:11:13.47 "(But the free gift is not like the offense. 00:11:13.50\00:11:17.11 For if by one man's offense many died,)" the 00:11:17.14\00:11:20.98 sin of Adam, "(much more the grace of God and the 00:11:21.01\00:11:24.51 gift of God--and the gift by grace of the one Man, 00:11:24.55\00:11:27.48 Jesus Christ, abounded to many.)" 00:11:27.52\00:11:30.35 And, you know, I just love this truth that if anybody out there 00:11:30.39\00:11:32.92 knows that because of the sin of Adam we've got problems, 00:11:32.95\00:11:35.79 as real as that is, it is just as real because of 00:11:35.82\00:11:39.73 the holiness of Jesus we can have victory. 00:11:39.76\00:11:42.93 And so he's saying, "Look, if you believe that 00:11:42.96\00:11:44.90 because of Adam's sin, it's caused a problem, 00:11:44.93\00:11:47.20 then don't disbelieve that because of Jesus' victory, 00:11:47.24\00:11:50.61 we can have victory." 00:11:50.64\00:11:53.44 In the same way, "(Christ abounded to many. 00:11:53.48\00:11:57.48 And the gift is not like that which came through 00:11:57.51\00:11:59.68 the one who sinned. 00:11:59.71\00:12:01.68 For the judgment which came from one offense 00:12:01.72\00:12:03.49 resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which 00:12:03.52\00:12:06.12 came from many offenses resulted in justification. 00:12:06.15\00:12:09.29 For if by one man's offense,)" that of Adam, 00:12:09.32\00:12:13.70 "(death reigned through the one, much more those 00:12:13.73\00:12:17.33 who receive abundance of grace and the gift of 00:12:17.37\00:12:19.97 righteousness will reign in life through the One, 00:12:20.00\00:12:23.20 Jesus Christ.) 00:12:23.24\00:12:24.97 Therefore, as through one man's offense judgment came to all 00:12:25.01\00:12:27.48 men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man's 00:12:27.51\00:12:32.18 righteousness--through his righteous act the free 00:12:32.21\00:12:35.48 gift came to all, resulting in justification in life. 00:12:35.52\00:12:39.05 For as by one man's disobedience many were 00:12:39.09\00:12:41.62 made sinners, so also by one Man's obedience many 00:12:41.66\00:12:45.03 may be made righteous." 00:12:45.06\00:12:47.76 And I love that verse because I think--I have no 00:12:47.76\00:12:51.00 doubt, I fully believe, because of Adam's sin I've 00:12:51.03\00:12:53.84 got a problem. 00:12:53.87\00:12:55.70 I ought to have the same faith because of Jesus' 00:12:55.74\00:12:57.37 righteousness I can have the victory. 00:12:57.41\00:12:59.24 Jean: You know, Pastor Doug, it's interesting, 00:12:59.27\00:13:01.08 the defeat begins in a garden, when Adam and Eve sinned. 00:13:01.11\00:13:03.35 The victory begins in a garden when Jesus prayed, 00:13:03.38\00:13:06.61 "Not my will; thy will be done." 00:13:06.65\00:13:08.82 And of course, the cross, the eternal home of the 00:13:08.85\00:13:11.75 redeemed, puts us back in a garden but a garden 00:13:11.79\00:13:14.49 restored in the New Jerusalem. 00:13:14.52\00:13:16.62 Doug: Yeah, and it was on the sixth day that Adam 00:13:16.66\00:13:19.33 goes to sleep, his side is opened up and God takes 00:13:19.36\00:13:22.46 out a rib and, as a result of that, then the 00:13:22.50\00:13:27.70 church--His bride is born, I should say. 00:13:27.74\00:13:31.14 And then Christ on the sixth day of the week, His 00:13:31.17\00:13:33.61 side is opened up. 00:13:33.64\00:13:35.68 A flow of blood and water come out, and the church 00:13:35.71\00:13:37.71 is born, His bride. 00:13:37.75\00:13:39.71 And so there's a lot of interesting parallels 00:13:39.75\00:13:41.52 between the first and the second Adam that you can 00:13:41.55\00:13:43.49 find in the Bible. 00:13:43.52\00:13:45.22 Jean: Now, Pastor Doug, you mentioned a little 00:13:45.25\00:13:47.19 earlier how that Jesus gained the victory when He 00:13:47.22\00:13:48.96 was tempted by the devil in the wilderness. 00:13:48.99\00:13:50.96 And there are some parallels between that and 00:13:50.99\00:13:53.73 how Adam fell and how Christ overcame in the 00:13:53.76\00:13:56.97 three areas of temptation. 00:13:57.00\00:13:59.60 Doug: Yeah, and you know, there's that verse in 00:13:59.63\00:14:02.17 1 John chapter 2, verse 16, starting with verse 15: 00:14:02.20\00:14:06.54 "Love not the world, neither the things that 00:14:06.57\00:14:08.28 are in the world. 00:14:08.31\00:14:09.91 If any man loves the world, the love of the 00:14:09.94\00:14:11.58 Father's not in him. 00:14:11.61\00:14:13.31 For all that's in the world," here's verse 16, 00:14:13.35\00:14:15.18 "the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and 00:14:15.22\00:14:17.55 the pride of life, is of the world. 00:14:17.59\00:14:20.02 And the world passes away, and the lust thereof: but 00:14:20.06\00:14:21.99 he that does the word of God abides for ever." 00:14:22.02\00:14:23.86 So those three things, sin is divided in three 00:14:23.89\00:14:26.06 principal categories here: lust of the flesh, the 00:14:26.09\00:14:29.16 lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, those are 00:14:29.20\00:14:31.47 the same--those are the areas where Adam fell, it 00:14:31.50\00:14:34.84 says--and Eve: "The tree was good for food," you 00:14:34.87\00:14:38.27 get the lust of the flesh, "pleasant to the eyes," 00:14:38.31\00:14:40.64 you get the lust of the eyes, "it'll be desirable 00:14:40.68\00:14:43.21 to make you wise. 00:14:43.24\00:14:44.88 You'll be like God," the pride of life. 00:14:44.91\00:14:47.02 It's, you know, worship, you'll be like God. 00:14:47.05\00:14:49.58 Then Jesus in the desert, He overcomes in those same 00:14:49.62\00:14:53.09 areas and you can read this, of course, in Luke 4 00:14:53.12\00:14:56.39 and in Matthew chapter 3. 00:14:56.42\00:14:58.39 It says: "Command these stones to become bread," 00:14:58.43\00:15:00.30 and there's the lust of the flesh, and He had victory. 00:15:00.33\00:15:02.30 The devil showed Him all the kingdoms of the world 00:15:02.33\00:15:04.57 in their glory, the beauty of it, lust of the eyes. 00:15:04.60\00:15:07.90 Jesus resisted, he had victory. 00:15:07.94\00:15:09.94 "Throw Yourself down from here," the pride of life, 00:15:09.97\00:15:12.71 "You'll be," you know, "demonstrating Your power." 00:15:12.74\00:15:15.11 He resisted that temptation. 00:15:15.14\00:15:16.91 He had victory. 00:15:16.95\00:15:18.88 So in all the categories where Adam and Eve fell, 00:15:18.91\00:15:20.92 Jesus overcame so that we could be overcomers. 00:15:20.95\00:15:23.92 Jean: Absolutely, for those of you who are 00:15:23.95\00:15:26.59 joining us live, I know there are folks who are 00:15:26.62\00:15:28.72 watching on Facebook and you might have a Bible 00:15:28.76\00:15:30.89 question, maybe related to the subject that we're 00:15:30.93\00:15:32.89 talking about. 00:15:32.93\00:15:34.73 If you would like to go ahead and just type in 00:15:34.73\00:15:36.46 your Bible question there on Facebook and we have 00:15:36.50\00:15:38.20 Santiago that'll be sending the questions to 00:15:38.23\00:15:40.07 me and we'll try and get some of these questions in 00:15:40.10\00:15:42.07 between our study. 00:15:42.10\00:15:43.91 And Pastor Doug, we have Jordan who is actually 00:15:43.94\00:15:46.07 asking, his question is: "Why are there so many 00:15:46.11\00:15:48.61 religions in the world?" 00:15:48.64\00:15:50.95 Doug: Well, good. 00:15:50.98\00:15:52.85 A good question. 00:15:52.88\00:15:55.18 You know, of all the different religions, you 00:15:55.22\00:15:57.25 get, you know, major religions are 00:15:57.29\00:15:59.35 Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, you've got, you 00:15:59.39\00:16:04.66 know, Sikhism and, oh, the religion in China, 00:16:04.69\00:16:10.73 Confucism* but I'm thinking of Anitism and-- 00:16:10.77\00:16:13.07 Jean: Buddhism. 00:16:13.10\00:16:15.57 Doug: Buddhism, Anatinia*. 00:16:15.60\00:16:17.97 No religion is more divided than Christianity. 00:16:18.01\00:16:21.04 And I think the reason is that you try to hide a 00:16:21.08\00:16:24.28 diamond in broken glass, and the devil has 00:16:24.31\00:16:27.55 surrounded the diamond of truth in Christianity with 00:16:27.58\00:16:31.49 a lot of broken glass to just camouflage it. 00:16:31.52\00:16:35.12 And people, how many times do we know of people that 00:16:35.16\00:16:37.09 will say, "Well, look at if--why would I be a Christian? 00:16:37.13\00:16:40.73 Look at what the Christians do? 00:16:40.76\00:16:42.56 You know, if you look at them evangelists on 00:16:42.60\00:16:44.57 television that are begging for everyone's 00:16:44.60\00:16:46.84 money and brandishing their, you know, golden 00:16:46.87\00:16:50.17 Rolexes and, you know, everything's gilded on 00:16:50.21\00:16:54.14 their set and they're wanting us to buy them a new jet." 00:16:54.18\00:16:57.31 And so there's so much hypocrisy in Christianity 00:16:57.35\00:17:01.78 and there's so much scandal in Christianity 00:17:01.82\00:17:04.42 and there are so many confusing bizarre 00:17:04.45\00:17:06.45 doctrines in Christianity, people look at all the 00:17:06.49\00:17:08.52 broken glass and they say, "Who wants to be a Christian?" 00:17:08.56\00:17:10.89 because they're not looking at the diamond, 00:17:10.93\00:17:12.69 they're not looking at the real thing. 00:17:12.73\00:17:14.93 And so I think that's one reason is the devil's 00:17:14.96\00:17:16.63 trying to create division. 00:17:16.67\00:17:18.87 I think another reason: Jesus said to the 00:17:18.90\00:17:21.17 disciples, "All men will know you're My disciples 00:17:21.20\00:17:23.30 by your love for one another." 00:17:23.34\00:17:25.44 So Christ said, "The world will know that you are 00:17:25.47\00:17:27.71 Mine by your love for one another." 00:17:27.74\00:17:29.94 The devil heard that and he thought, "Well, if 00:17:29.98\00:17:31.65 they're going to know that Christ is true by their 00:17:31.68\00:17:33.38 love for one another, I need to frustrate that 00:17:33.42\00:17:35.48 plan by having them all divided and fighting." 00:17:35.52\00:17:39.32 So instead of the church being united and people 00:17:39.35\00:17:41.59 seeing that, the devil sought to fragment 00:17:41.62\00:17:44.49 Christianity more than any religion to turn people 00:17:44.53\00:17:47.30 away from it. 00:17:47.30\00:17:49.30 Jean: Okay, we have another question that's 00:17:49.33\00:17:50.97 come from Shawnda and she writes: "Why is Jesus 00:17:51.00\00:17:53.70 called an angel in the Old Testament if He is God?" 00:17:53.74\00:17:58.87 Doug: Well, when we say the word "angel," some 00:17:58.91\00:18:02.11 people automatically think of one of these 00:18:02.14\00:18:04.25 seraphim-like, cherubim-like creatures 00:18:04.28\00:18:06.41 with wings and that are messengers and they're 00:18:06.45\00:18:09.48 ministering servants. 00:18:09.52\00:18:11.45 The word "angel" actually means messenger and Christ 00:18:11.49\00:18:14.56 is called the Archangel and that just means the 00:18:14.59\00:18:18.36 greatest messenger or the chief of the angels. 00:18:18.39\00:18:21.96 It doesn't mean He isn't God. 00:18:22.00\00:18:24.27 And so in the Old Testament, sometimes 00:18:24.30\00:18:26.23 Christ appeared as the Angel of God or the 00:18:26.27\00:18:30.04 messenger of God, and the reason you know He's God, 00:18:30.07\00:18:33.78 when He appears to Joshua, Joshua sees this 00:18:33.81\00:18:37.55 majestic-like warrior standing with His sword 00:18:37.58\00:18:41.38 drawn and he says, "Are You for our enemies or are 00:18:41.42\00:18:45.05 You for us?" 00:18:45.09\00:18:46.69 And He says, "But neither. 00:18:46.72\00:18:48.69 I'm coming as the General of God's Armies." 00:18:48.72\00:18:51.66 And He says, "Put your shoes off your feet for 00:18:51.69\00:18:53.83 the place you're standing is holy ground." 00:18:53.86\00:18:56.56 And Joshua gets down to worship and so you don't 00:18:56.60\00:19:00.14 worship anyone but God. 00:19:00.17\00:19:01.84 That's what the commandments say. 00:19:01.87\00:19:03.57 And so, this messenger who is sometimes called 00:19:03.61\00:19:05.81 Michael, the Archangel, He has the--He comes as a 00:19:05.84\00:19:09.64 messenger of God. 00:19:09.68\00:19:11.51 Jesus brought the greatest message to our world. 00:19:11.55\00:19:13.68 Jean: Okay, maybe one more question before we get 00:19:13.72\00:19:15.55 back to the lesson. 00:19:15.58\00:19:17.39 Vaughn is asking-- Devaughn: "Is the 00:19:17.42\00:19:20.22 time of probation now?" 00:19:20.26\00:19:22.92 Doug: Are we now living in the time of, well, yes, 00:19:22.96\00:19:25.26 when you say "probation," not close of probation. 00:19:25.29\00:19:28.70 Everybody in your life has a probationary period, 00:19:28.73\00:19:31.80 that's the time you're alive. 00:19:31.83\00:19:34.14 As long as your probation personally hasn't closed, 00:19:34.17\00:19:36.54 this is your time to know and accept Jesus. 00:19:36.57\00:19:40.18 Has the close if probation happened? 00:19:40.21\00:19:42.11 No, when that happens you're going to start 00:19:42.14\00:19:45.21 seeing the seven last plagues fall. 00:19:45.25\00:19:47.55 So, no, there is still time but you don't know 00:19:47.58\00:19:49.85 when your probation might close, you know. 00:19:49.88\00:19:52.42 There are people who lived a little while after their 00:19:52.45\00:19:54.92 probation closed, after Judas went out and Jesus 00:19:54.96\00:19:57.19 washed his feet, it says he went out and Satan 00:19:57.23\00:20:00.26 entered him. 00:20:00.30\00:20:02.06 His probation had closed at that point. 00:20:02.10\00:20:03.97 When Saul went to the witch and he grieved away 00:20:04.00\00:20:06.67 the spirit, his probation had closed. 00:20:06.70\00:20:08.84 And so, there's a time when you can even still be 00:20:08.87\00:20:12.44 alive, like the people outside the ark. 00:20:12.47\00:20:15.34 For seven days the sun kept shining, but the door 00:20:15.38\00:20:17.85 had shut, before the flood came. 00:20:17.88\00:20:20.15 Their probation had closed. 00:20:20.18\00:20:21.92 So, you know, I don't--you don't want to push God's mercy. 00:20:21.95\00:20:24.29 Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your heart. 00:20:24.32\00:20:26.96 Jean: Okay, well then, moving on with our 00:20:26.99\00:20:30.03 quarterly, with our lesson for today, Monday's lesson 00:20:30.06\00:20:33.19 is entitled "On the Run," and we have the story of 00:20:33.23\00:20:35.76 Jacob who, after he deceived his father, how 00:20:35.80\00:20:38.13 that he had to flee because of the threats of 00:20:38.17\00:20:40.60 his brother, and he's wandering there in the 00:20:40.64\00:20:43.34 wilderness and it's nighttime and you can just 00:20:43.37\00:20:46.14 imagine how he must feel. 00:20:46.17\00:20:48.04 Here he has not only, you know, made his brother 00:20:48.08\00:20:50.98 mad, but he has deceived his father whom he 00:20:51.01\00:20:53.95 respected and now he's separated from his mother 00:20:53.98\00:20:56.89 whom he loved and he's all alone. 00:20:56.92\00:20:59.89 He's got nothing, and he realizes all of this is 00:20:59.92\00:21:02.26 because of my sin. 00:21:02.29\00:21:04.53 Now, probably, he had been repenting, you know, as he 00:21:04.56\00:21:07.36 was leaving home, asking for forgiveness, he had a 00:21:07.40\00:21:10.03 humble heart, but then God shows in a very special 00:21:10.07\00:21:12.87 way His grace and His forgiveness that night 00:21:12.90\00:21:16.34 when Jacob lies down and goes to sleep in a place 00:21:16.37\00:21:19.71 called Beersheba. 00:21:19.74\00:21:21.88 Doug: Yeah, Jacob, he deceived his father and he 00:21:21.91\00:21:26.41 stole his brother's birthright and then they 00:21:26.45\00:21:28.95 knew that Esau was saying to his friends, "As soon 00:21:28.98\00:21:32.75 as my father's dead, I'm going to kill him," and 00:21:32.79\00:21:34.99 they thought, "You know--" 00:21:35.02\00:21:37.96 Isaac actually thought he was going to die much 00:21:37.99\00:21:39.39 sooner than he did. 00:21:39.43\00:21:41.56 He blessed his sons. 00:21:41.60\00:21:43.26 He says, you know, "The day of my departure's 00:21:43.30\00:21:44.80 come," and he blessed his sons. 00:21:44.83\00:21:46.53 Well, he lived another 40 years. 00:21:46.57\00:21:48.10 He didn't--no, he outlived his wife, actually. 00:21:48.14\00:21:50.14 But--so Jacob's leaving home under pretense of, 00:21:50.17\00:21:51.97 you know, going to marry a girl and he actually was 00:21:52.01\00:21:54.28 going to find a girl who believed in Jehovah. 00:21:54.31\00:21:57.01 His parents were so grieved that Esau had 00:21:57.05\00:21:59.28 married the local Canaanite pagan girls that 00:21:59.31\00:22:01.98 going across the country to a relative sort of, 00:22:02.02\00:22:05.55 he's looking for refuge from his brother's wrath, 00:22:05.59\00:22:08.59 he feels isolated. 00:22:08.62\00:22:10.63 Now, we can read about it here in Genesis chapter 00:22:10.66\00:22:12.59 28, verse 10: "And Jacob went out from Beersheba, 00:22:12.63\00:22:15.96 and he went towards Haran." 00:22:16.00\00:22:17.97 That's on the other side of the Euphrates. 00:22:18.00\00:22:20.27 "And he came to a certain place, and he stayed there 00:22:20.30\00:22:22.30 all night," we later know this is Bethel, "because 00:22:22.34\00:22:25.11 the sun had set; and he took one of the stones of 00:22:25.14\00:22:27.68 that place, and put it at his head and he lay down 00:22:27.71\00:22:29.94 at that place to sleep. 00:22:29.98\00:22:32.91 And then he dreamed, and behold a ladder was set up 00:22:32.95\00:22:35.08 on earth, and its top reached to heaven: and 00:22:35.12\00:22:38.39 there the angels of God were ascending and 00:22:38.42\00:22:40.62 descending on it. 00:22:40.66\00:22:42.59 And, behold, the Lord stood above it, and said, 00:22:42.62\00:22:44.29 I am the Lord God of Abraham your father, and 00:22:44.33\00:22:46.13 the God of Isaac: the land on which you lie, I will 00:22:46.16\00:22:49.70 give to you and your descendants. 00:22:49.73\00:22:51.70 Also, your descendants will be as the dust of the 00:22:51.73\00:22:54.00 earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west, 00:22:54.04\00:22:57.34 and to the east, and the north, and the south: and 00:22:57.37\00:22:59.87 in you and in your seed all the families of the 00:22:59.91\00:23:02.11 earth will be blessed." 00:23:02.14\00:23:03.98 Meaning, the Messiah would come through the line of Jacob. 00:23:04.01\00:23:06.25 "Behold, I am with you and I will keep you wherever 00:23:06.28\00:23:08.32 you go and I'll bring you back to this land," and he 00:23:08.35\00:23:11.12 did keep him and bring him back, "for I will not leave 00:23:11.15\00:23:14.39 you until I have done what I have spoken for you. 00:23:14.42\00:23:17.09 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, Surely," 00:23:17.13\00:23:19.56 now this is a very vivid dream and he knows it's a 00:23:19.59\00:23:23.47 vision from God. 00:23:23.50\00:23:25.40 "Surely, the Lord is in this place and I did not know it. 00:23:25.43\00:23:27.64 And he was afraid and said, How awesome is this place. 00:23:27.67\00:23:30.27 And it is none other than the house of God." 00:23:30.31\00:23:33.27 That's where we get the word "Bethel." 00:23:33.31\00:23:35.31 "And this is the gate of heaven." 00:23:35.34\00:23:37.91 And it's interesting that the word "Babylon" means 00:23:37.95\00:23:41.38 gate of heaven, which is the counterfeit of Bethel 00:23:41.42\00:23:45.42 being the gate of heaven. 00:23:45.45\00:23:47.76 But, of course, Babylon is, I think that's the 00:23:47.79\00:23:49.96 Chaldean or a different language for it. 00:23:49.99\00:23:52.29 So he thinks that God's abandoned him, and God 00:23:52.33\00:23:56.00 comes to him and says, "Because you've humbled 00:23:56.03\00:23:58.20 yourself and you've turned to Me and you've repented 00:23:58.23\00:24:00.17 of your sin, I'm not abandoning you but you 00:24:00.20\00:24:02.30 wanted the blessing. 00:24:02.34\00:24:04.14 You wanted the blessing of the firstborn. 00:24:04.17\00:24:06.01 I told your mother that you were going--the 00:24:06.04\00:24:07.68 youngest was going to get it. 00:24:07.71\00:24:09.51 You didn't need to deceive your brother to get it. 00:24:09.54\00:24:11.48 You should have trusted Me." 00:24:11.51\00:24:13.25 But He still forgives him and He says, "I'm going to 00:24:13.28\00:24:14.88 bless you. 00:24:14.92\00:24:16.72 The Messiah will come through your line." 00:24:16.75\00:24:19.09 Jean: And of course, if you look at that story, 00:24:19.12\00:24:20.89 like all the stories in the Bible, you get an 00:24:20.92\00:24:22.66 illustration of the gospel. 00:24:22.69\00:24:24.46 Here, you have Jacob sinning against his father 00:24:24.49\00:24:26.49 and yet his father still blesses him. 00:24:26.53\00:24:29.83 And he needed to repent in order to receive that blessing. 00:24:29.86\00:24:32.90 So we have sinned against our heavenly Father and 00:24:32.93\00:24:35.87 yet He still blesses us and, in order for us to 00:24:35.90\00:24:38.81 receive the inheritance that He wants to give us, 00:24:38.84\00:24:41.54 we have to repent, as Jacob did. 00:24:41.58\00:24:43.91 So, you know, there are so many stories in the Bible 00:24:43.95\00:24:46.25 that illustrate the grace of God and His love for 00:24:46.28\00:24:48.28 us, for people. 00:24:48.32\00:24:50.05 Doug: And even, you know, even when he did that 00:24:50.09\00:24:51.92 dastardly thing of stealing his brother's 00:24:51.95\00:24:53.89 blessing, there is a great analogy there of the gospel. 00:24:53.92\00:24:56.62 The way that he gets the blessing from the father, 00:24:56.66\00:24:58.79 he puts on the robes of the elder brother and he 00:24:58.83\00:25:01.80 covers himself with a sacrifice, it's a lamb, 00:25:01.83\00:25:06.23 and he's got the lamb on his hands and on his neck, 00:25:06.27\00:25:09.94 and his brother's clothes, and basically the father, 00:25:09.97\00:25:12.61 who is blind, gives him the brother's blessing 00:25:12.64\00:25:15.84 based on the brother's robe and the smell of the brother. 00:25:15.88\00:25:19.15 And, you know, we, because we put on Christ's robe of 00:25:19.18\00:25:22.65 righteousness and because of the sacrifice of the 00:25:22.68\00:25:24.92 Lamb, the Father closes His eyes to our sin and He 00:25:24.95\00:25:27.36 blesses us. 00:25:27.39\00:25:29.32 So, even though he shouldn't have done what 00:25:29.36\00:25:31.46 he did, there's still an analogy in there. 00:25:31.49\00:25:33.83 Jean: And we get the blessing of our older 00:25:33.86\00:25:35.83 brother, Christ. 00:25:35.86\00:25:37.60 Doug: Yeah, exactly, he's the elder brother that 00:25:37.63\00:25:39.60 gives us that blessing. 00:25:39.63\00:25:41.50 Jean: Great analogy. 00:25:41.54\00:25:43.41 Somebody sent in a question, Pastor Doug. 00:25:43.44\00:25:45.24 It's a good question. 00:25:45.27\00:25:46.98 Jeremy's asking: "Do you think that all religions 00:25:47.01\00:25:48.94 focus on the same God but just have different beliefs?" 00:25:48.98\00:25:51.91 Doug: No, you know, I believe that God is good 00:25:51.95\00:25:56.18 to many people in many religions. 00:25:56.22\00:25:58.35 I don't want anyone to think that, you know, God 00:25:58.39\00:26:00.86 does not hear the prayers of anybody but one 00:26:00.89\00:26:02.72 particular church, 'cause Jesus said, "The Lord 00:26:02.76\00:26:05.36 sends His sunshine in the rain on the just and the 00:26:05.39\00:26:08.16 unjust," and even one of the apostles, I forget the 00:26:08.20\00:26:13.50 verse that it tells us that people everywhere who 00:26:13.54\00:26:17.74 do what's right and they call unto Him, that He 00:26:17.77\00:26:20.64 hears them. 00:26:20.68\00:26:22.94 And so, you know, God is a loving God but there is 00:26:22.98\00:26:25.78 only one true God and a lot of religions in the 00:26:25.81\00:26:28.02 world have a very distorted picture of God. 00:26:28.05\00:26:30.92 You think about some of those terrible pagan 00:26:30.95\00:26:32.95 religions that would even offer their children in 00:26:32.99\00:26:35.12 the fire and so they had a very corrupted picture of 00:26:35.16\00:26:37.79 God and that's--they're not worshiping the same 00:26:37.83\00:26:39.96 God when they're worshiping a God like that. 00:26:40.00\00:26:43.37 Jean: And you probably wonder why the devil has 00:26:43.40\00:26:45.23 been trying to misrepresent God, so there 00:26:45.27\00:26:48.80 is something about worshiping a God that is 00:26:48.84\00:26:50.74 being misrepresented. 00:26:50.77\00:26:52.57 The devil's trying to misrepresent the character 00:26:52.61\00:26:54.34 and the qualities of God so there must be something 00:26:54.38\00:26:56.68 about knowing what the God is like. 00:26:56.71\00:26:59.21 The Bible tells us to know God is to love Him. 00:26:59.25\00:27:01.55 And you're not going to love a God that, you know, 00:27:01.58\00:27:05.19 hates you or tortures you. 00:27:05.22\00:27:07.42 And even in Christianity, there are many who believe 00:27:07.46\00:27:09.52 that God is going to torture the wicked 00:27:09.56\00:27:12.06 throughout endless ages and it creates a false 00:27:12.09\00:27:14.46 picture of what God's like. 00:27:14.50\00:27:16.56 Totally different than the God of the Bible. 00:27:16.60\00:27:18.80 Doug: Even in the time of Christ, when Jesus came, 00:27:18.83\00:27:20.60 He came to show them what the Father is like and He 00:27:20.64\00:27:22.97 said He came unto His own and His own received Him not. 00:27:23.00\00:27:25.41 They didn't know Him. 00:27:25.44\00:27:27.61 And so they didn't, even the Jews. 00:27:27.64\00:27:29.61 Jesus said, "Look, if you were God's children, then 00:27:29.64\00:27:33.21 you would believe Me 'cause I've been sent by God." 00:27:33.25\00:27:35.52 And He said, "You have a whole different picture of 00:27:35.55\00:27:37.72 God than the truth. 00:27:37.75\00:27:40.32 I came to show you what He's really like." 00:27:40.36\00:27:42.46 Jean: That reminds me of a statement that I think 00:27:42.49\00:27:44.59 both of us got in a email yesterday which 00:27:44.63\00:27:47.23 illustrates the love of God, and it's just a 00:27:47.30\00:27:51.80 beautiful statement that comes from "Testimonies," Volume 5. 00:27:51.83\00:27:54.40 Maybe I'll just read it, Pastor Doug, 'cause it is encouraging. 00:27:54.44\00:27:58.07 "Testimonies," Volume page--" 00:27:58.11\00:28:00.51 Testimonies," Volume 5, page 740. 00:28:00.54\00:28:03.28 It says: "All of the paternal love which has 00:28:03.31\00:28:05.75 come down from generation to generation through the 00:28:05.78\00:28:07.88 channel of human hearts, all of the springs of 00:28:07.92\00:28:10.19 tenderness, which have opened to the souls of 00:28:10.22\00:28:12.49 men, are but as a tiny rill to the boundless 00:28:12.52\00:28:15.82 ocean when compared to the infinite and exhaustless 00:28:15.86\00:28:19.86 love of God. 00:28:19.89\00:28:21.73 Tongue cannot utter it, pain cannot portray it. 00:28:21.76\00:28:24.23 You may meditate upon it every day of your life. 00:28:24.27\00:28:27.97 You may search the Scriptures diligently in 00:28:28.00\00:28:30.27 order to understand it. 00:28:30.31\00:28:32.07 You may summon every power and capability that God 00:28:32.11\00:28:33.94 has given you in the endeavor to comprehend the 00:28:33.98\00:28:36.51 love and the compassion of the heavenly Father. 00:28:36.54\00:28:40.12 And yet," it says, "there is an infinity beyond. 00:28:40.15\00:28:45.79 You may study that love for ages and you can never 00:28:45.82\00:28:48.56 be fully--you can never fully comprehend the 00:28:48.59\00:28:50.69 length and the breadth, the depth and the height 00:28:50.73\00:28:52.73 of the love of God in giving His Son to die for 00:28:52.76\00:28:55.33 the world. 00:28:55.36\00:28:57.13 Eternity itself can never fully reveal it, yet as we 00:28:57.17\00:29:00.10 study the Bible and meditate upon the life of 00:29:00.14\00:29:02.40 Christ and the plan of redemption, these great 00:29:02.44\00:29:04.97 themes will open to our understanding more and more." 00:29:05.01\00:29:07.61 Doug: We'll spend eternity trying to comprehend the 00:29:07.64\00:29:09.54 love of God and we'll never plumb the depths. 00:29:09.58\00:29:11.55 Jean: It reminds me of that song where it says: 00:29:11.58\00:29:13.48 "If every person was an author, and all of the--" 00:29:13.52\00:29:17.52 Doug: The love of God, yeah. 00:29:17.55\00:29:19.29 Jean: The love of God, yeah. 00:29:19.32\00:29:21.09 "All of the reeds in the world were a pen, and the 00:29:21.12\00:29:23.12 sky was your parchment." 00:29:23.16\00:29:24.89 Doug: "If we with ink the ocean--" 00:29:24.93\00:29:27.00 Jean: "Drain." 00:29:27.03\00:29:28.93 Doug: "--drain and were every stalk on earth a 00:29:28.96\00:29:30.83 quill, and were the heavens a scroll, man 00:29:30.87\00:29:33.10 would still not be able to write the love of God." 00:29:33.13\00:29:36.77 I also forgot the words too. 00:29:36.81\00:29:38.84 Jean: Yeah, it's a beautiful, beautiful hymn. 00:29:38.87\00:29:40.78 All right, well, moving right along, we've got 00:29:40.81\00:29:42.71 quite a bit to cover here. 00:29:42.74\00:29:44.68 Tuesday's lesson is entitled: "Rabbi Jesus," 00:29:44.71\00:29:47.08 and we have a parallel between Genesis chapter 1 00:29:47.12\00:29:49.48 where it says: "In the beginning God created the 00:29:49.52\00:29:52.15 heavens and the earth," and of course, John 00:29:52.19\00:29:54.42 chapter 1 that says: "In the beginning was the Word 00:29:54.46\00:29:57.26 and the Word was with God and the Word was God. 00:29:57.29\00:29:59.33 He was in the beginning with God. 00:29:59.36\00:30:00.96 All things were made through Him and without 00:30:01.00\00:30:03.26 Him was not anything made that was made." 00:30:03.30\00:30:05.40 And then verse 4 is interesting. 00:30:05.43\00:30:07.47 It says: "In Him was life and the life was the light of men." 00:30:07.50\00:30:10.31 Well, the first thing that God created was light. 00:30:10.34\00:30:12.51 Here we have that parallel in John where Jesus is 00:30:12.54\00:30:15.54 described as the light and all life is dependent upon 00:30:15.58\00:30:19.61 light, the light of the sun. 00:30:19.65\00:30:21.78 All spiritual life is dependent upon Jesus. 00:30:21.82\00:30:24.39 Doug: Yeah, and if you go on and you jump to verse 9 00:30:24.42\00:30:27.42 in that same passage, it says: "And that was the 00:30:27.46\00:30:30.29 true light that gives light to every man that 00:30:30.33\00:30:32.96 comes into the world." 00:30:32.99\00:30:34.83 Then go to verse 14: "And the Word became flesh and 00:30:34.86\00:30:37.27 dwelt among us and we beheld the glory as of the 00:30:37.30\00:30:40.30 only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth." 00:30:40.34\00:30:43.41 I went through the Gospel of John. 00:30:43.44\00:30:45.44 John is definitely the most visual of the apostles. 00:30:45.47\00:30:48.01 And just in the first chapter of John, there 00:30:48.04\00:30:50.71 are, like, 32 references to light and sight. 00:30:50.75\00:30:53.55 I mean, words like behold, light, see. 00:30:53.58\00:30:56.62 "We saw Him, come and see." 00:30:56.65\00:30:59.12 I mean, he's a very, very visual disciple and so 00:30:59.15\00:31:02.59 when Jesus said, "I am the light of the world," and 00:31:02.62\00:31:04.96 we come to Christ and we see. 00:31:04.99\00:31:07.83 Now, the reason Jesus is qualified to be Rabbi 00:31:07.86\00:31:10.57 Jesus is because he came from the presence of God. 00:31:10.60\00:31:15.94 He is the fountainhead of all knowledge and wisdom 00:31:15.97\00:31:18.84 and so who in the universe could be more qualified to 00:31:18.87\00:31:23.55 teach us than Jesus who knows everything? 00:31:23.58\00:31:26.98 Jean: The disciples said to Jesus, "Lord, show us 00:31:27.02\00:31:28.88 the Father, and it suffices us," and Jesus 00:31:28.92\00:31:30.99 said, "Have I been so long time with you, Philip, he 00:31:31.02\00:31:33.12 who has seen Me has seen the Father." 00:31:33.15\00:31:35.52 That is a--you know, when you stop and think about 00:31:35.56\00:31:37.59 that for a minute, the kindness and the love and 00:31:37.63\00:31:40.20 the healing and the blessings that were 00:31:40.23\00:31:42.66 illustrated and displayed in the life of Jesus, 00:31:42.70\00:31:45.43 that's not somehow standing in opposition to 00:31:45.47\00:31:48.50 what God is like. 00:31:48.54\00:31:50.61 That is what God the Father is like. 00:31:50.64\00:31:52.74 He is a God of love and compassion, forgiveness. 00:31:52.77\00:31:54.88 Not to say that there isn't a God of justice 00:31:54.91\00:31:57.31 because we do see in the life of Christ moments 00:31:57.35\00:32:00.08 where justice is displayed, in particular, 00:32:00.12\00:32:02.75 the cleansing of the sanctuary, that even 00:32:02.78\00:32:04.72 astounded the disciples when Jesus cleansed the sanctuary. 00:32:04.75\00:32:07.56 So, yup, we see this beautiful blend of love 00:32:07.59\00:32:09.92 and compassion, mercy and justice in the life of Christ. 00:32:09.96\00:32:12.83 Doug: Yeah, and so, you know, He is, of course, 00:32:12.86\00:32:16.36 knowledge incarnate. 00:32:16.40\00:32:18.93 He is wisdom incarnate. 00:32:18.97\00:32:21.00 Matter of fact, I think we have a couple of verses. 00:32:21.04\00:32:23.27 If you want, you can read 1 Corinthians 1:24, then 00:32:23.30\00:32:25.54 I'll read Colossians 2, verses 2 and 3. 00:32:25.57\00:32:28.28 Jean: It says: "But to those who are called, both 00:32:28.31\00:32:30.41 Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the 00:32:30.45\00:32:33.11 wisdom of God," that's 1 Corinthians 1:24. 00:32:33.15\00:32:36.75 Doug: Yeah, so Christ is the wisdom of God, is--He 00:32:36.79\00:32:39.32 wanted to show His wisdom in everything He said. 00:32:39.35\00:32:42.49 They came back--they were supposed to rest and when 00:32:42.52\00:32:45.09 the guards came back and said, "Never a man spake 00:32:45.13\00:32:47.50 like this man." 00:32:47.50\00:32:49.73 And, boy, I wish I could have been on earth back 00:32:49.76\00:32:51.93 then and seen that. 00:32:51.97\00:32:54.27 Colossians 2, verses 2 and 3: "That their hearts 00:32:54.30\00:32:56.50 might be encouraged, being knit together in love, and 00:32:56.54\00:32:58.54 attaining to all riches of the full assurance of 00:32:58.57\00:33:01.64 understanding," and notice here, "to the knowledge of 00:33:01.68\00:33:04.98 the mystery of God, both the Father, and of Christ; 00:33:05.01\00:33:08.42 in whom are hidden," now, he says, God the Father, 00:33:08.45\00:33:11.89 and Christ are God. 00:33:11.92\00:33:14.19 "In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom 00:33:14.22\00:33:18.29 and knowledge." 00:33:18.33\00:33:20.26 And so Jesus had in Him--I mean, you know, it's fun 00:33:20.30\00:33:22.90 sometimes now when you just go to Google. 00:33:22.93\00:33:25.73 I don't know how we ever lived without it. 00:33:25.77\00:33:28.07 You go to Google and you type in anything and all 00:33:28.10\00:33:30.64 of the wisdom of the world is at your fingertips in 00:33:30.67\00:33:33.98 the flash of a, you know, of a moment, and I'm 00:33:34.01\00:33:38.51 getting spoiled now. 00:33:38.55\00:33:40.68 Where I used to search my Bible software, I'm 00:33:40.72\00:33:42.68 finding Google, the search engine for the Bible in 00:33:42.72\00:33:44.69 Google, is actually pretty good and it gives you a 00:33:44.72\00:33:46.92 lot of options. 00:33:46.96\00:33:49.39 But, you know, everything you might know that can be 00:33:49.42\00:33:51.86 known, Christ had all of that in Him, all that wisdom. 00:33:51.89\00:33:54.96 And so, He is, of course, the most qualified rabbi 00:33:55.00\00:33:57.60 and teacher. 00:33:57.63\00:33:59.57 Jean: Pastor Doug, we have a question that's coming 00:33:59.60\00:34:01.77 in from Jessimi. 00:34:01.80\00:34:04.01 She asks, "What is true repentance?" 00:34:04.04\00:34:06.74 Doug: You know, true repentance is a sorrow for 00:34:06.78\00:34:09.84 sin, not just sorry that you're in trouble because 00:34:09.88\00:34:13.55 the Pharaoh repented and then he went right back to it. 00:34:13.58\00:34:17.02 He just was sorry about the judgment. 00:34:17.05\00:34:19.19 Judas repented; he went and hung himself. 00:34:19.22\00:34:20.99 That's not the right kind of repentance. 00:34:21.02\00:34:23.02 But it's a sorrow for sin, sorry that we've hurt God, 00:34:23.06\00:34:25.06 and a willingness to turn away from it. 00:34:25.09\00:34:27.56 And so someone said, "You--repentance is when 00:34:27.60\00:34:29.86 you perform a U-turn on the road of life and it 00:34:29.90\00:34:32.83 means you turn." 00:34:32.87\00:34:35.50 And so whenever the Bible says: "Repent for the 00:34:35.54\00:34:37.64 kingdom of heaven is at hand," it's talking about, 00:34:37.67\00:34:39.77 you know, humbling ourselves before God, 00:34:39.81\00:34:42.08 confessing our sins, and then asking for his power 00:34:42.11\00:34:44.65 to turn from those sins, and walking in newness of life. 00:34:44.68\00:34:48.38 Jean: The Bible says that it's God that gives us 00:34:48.42\00:34:51.72 repentance so as we turn to Him and we grow closer 00:34:51.75\00:34:54.59 to Him, our repentance will grow. 00:34:54.62\00:34:57.49 It'll be deeper and fuller. 00:34:57.53\00:34:59.76 Here's another question that Jasmine has. 00:34:59.79\00:35:02.00 It's a great question. 00:35:02.03\00:35:03.87 I don't think I've seen this one before. 00:35:03.90\00:35:06.00 It says: "Is there a correlation between the 00:35:06.03\00:35:08.10 dove Noah sent out, and the Holy Spirit descending 00:35:08.14\00:35:11.57 upon Jesus like a dove?" 00:35:11.61\00:35:14.48 Doug: Yeah, a great question. 00:35:14.51\00:35:16.61 You know, historically, the dove has been a symbol of peace. 00:35:16.64\00:35:19.15 Not too many people are attacked by doves. 00:35:19.18\00:35:22.55 They're sort of gentle birds. 00:35:22.58\00:35:24.45 They coo and they're a bird that is a bird of 00:35:24.49\00:35:26.82 sacrifice, kind of like, you know, in the mammals 00:35:26.86\00:35:29.66 you've got the lamb was a sacrifice. 00:35:29.69\00:35:31.69 For the poor people, the dove was a sacrifice. 00:35:31.73\00:35:34.36 And Joseph and Mary had no money so they brought 00:35:34.36\00:35:36.67 turtledoves as a sacrifice. 00:35:36.70\00:35:39.47 And so, the dove, when Noah sent it out and it 00:35:39.50\00:35:42.80 came back with an olive leaf in its mouth, around 00:35:42.84\00:35:45.67 the world that's sort of been--I think even the 00:35:45.71\00:35:48.34 United Nations uses that as an emblem of peace. 00:35:48.38\00:35:51.55 And that God, you know, that the judgment is over now. 00:35:51.58\00:35:54.22 Man is at peace with God. 00:35:54.25\00:35:56.08 You get the rainbow in the heavens. 00:35:56.12\00:35:58.05 And so, when the Holy Spirit came into Christ's 00:35:58.09\00:36:00.22 life, I believe God sends peace into the person's 00:36:00.26\00:36:02.29 life when they're baptized and there's--it's a symbol 00:36:02.32\00:36:06.09 of reconciliation as well. 00:36:06.13\00:36:08.70 Jean: Maybe one of the signs of the Holy Spirit 00:36:08.73\00:36:10.73 dwelling within the heart of a person is a peace. 00:36:10.77\00:36:13.30 The Bible speaks of a peace that passes all 00:36:13.34\00:36:15.57 understanding, and there's a joy, especially at 00:36:15.60\00:36:17.91 baptism, when somebody was baptized and they give 00:36:17.94\00:36:20.38 their life to Christ, the Holy Spirit gives them 00:36:20.41\00:36:22.78 peace and joy, and, of course, we see that 00:36:22.81\00:36:25.31 symbolized in the dove. 00:36:25.35\00:36:27.58 Symbolized by the Holy Spirit. 00:36:27.62\00:36:30.02 Our next part of our lesson then goes to 00:36:30.05\00:36:31.95 Wednesday where we're talking about--it's got an 00:36:31.99\00:36:34.09 interesting title. 00:36:34.12\00:36:35.89 It says: "A Woman Talks Back." 00:36:35.92\00:36:37.96 And we have the story here of Matthew chapter 00:36:37.99\00:36:39.86 15:21-28 and maybe I'll just read this and, Pastor 00:36:39.89\00:36:42.13 Doug, you just interrupt as you want to add. 00:36:42.16\00:36:44.27 It says: "Then Jesus went out from there and 00:36:44.30\00:36:46.43 departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 00:36:46.47\00:36:48.47 And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that 00:36:48.50\00:36:50.87 region and cried out to Him, saying, 'Have mercy 00:36:50.91\00:36:53.41 upon me, O Lord, Son of David! 00:36:53.44\00:36:55.34 My daughter is severely demon-possessed.' 00:36:55.38\00:36:57.95 But He answered her not a word. 00:36:57.98\00:37:00.35 And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, 'Send 00:37:00.38\00:37:02.18 her away, for she cries out after us.' 00:37:02.22\00:37:04.85 But Jesus answered and said, and He said, 'I am not sent 00:37:04.89\00:37:07.89 except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.' 00:37:07.92\00:37:11.09 Then she came and she worshiped Him, saying, 00:37:11.13\00:37:13.93 'Lord, help me!' 00:37:13.96\00:37:16.26 But He answered again and said, 'It is not good to 00:37:16.30\00:37:18.30 take the children's bread and throw it to the little dogs.' 00:37:18.33\00:37:20.40 She said, 'Yes, Lord, yet even the little 00:37:20.44\00:37:22.77 dogs eat the crumbs which fall from the master's table.' 00:37:22.80\00:37:24.81 Then Jesus answered her and said, 00:37:24.84\00:37:28.01 'O woman, great is your faith! 00:37:28.04\00:37:29.91 Let it be to you as you desire.' 00:37:29.94\00:37:32.88 And her daughter was healed from that very hour." 00:37:32.91\00:37:35.72 Doug: Yeah, this is a--it's a very interesting 00:37:35.75\00:37:37.82 story because people are shocked to hear Jesus say 00:37:37.85\00:37:41.89 to someone who's praying for healing for their 00:37:41.92\00:37:44.89 child--refer to them as a dog. 00:37:44.93\00:37:49.20 And that it's not right to take the children's food 00:37:49.23\00:37:52.30 and I'm only sent to the lost house of the children 00:37:52.33\00:37:54.54 of Israel, and they think, "Wow, everybody else in 00:37:54.57\00:37:57.84 the Bible that comes to Jesus and prays, He 00:37:57.87\00:38:00.24 answers their prayer." 00:38:00.28\00:38:02.74 But in our lesson today we've got a couple of 00:38:02.78\00:38:04.48 examples where God--one doesn't answer at first. 00:38:04.51\00:38:08.18 He says no at first but then He says yes, and with 00:38:08.22\00:38:10.35 Bartimaeus He doesn't answer right away. 00:38:10.39\00:38:12.65 He has to continue crying but then the answer comes. 00:38:12.69\00:38:15.32 And we'll get to that in a moment. 00:38:15.36\00:38:17.49 But first, I think, it's interesting to note Christ 00:38:17.53\00:38:20.86 is like--He comes with a ministry like Elijah's to 00:38:20.90\00:38:25.30 bring revival. 00:38:25.33\00:38:27.57 And Elijah went and stayed with a woman of Sidon and 00:38:27.60\00:38:30.91 performed a miracle, and raised her son. 00:38:30.94\00:38:35.98 Here, Jesus, this is the only time that it records 00:38:36.01\00:38:38.51 that Jesus leaves the territory of Israel. 00:38:38.55\00:38:41.25 And this woman comes and she says, you know, "Have 00:38:41.28\00:38:44.72 mercy on me, have mercy on me," and she's speaking to 00:38:44.75\00:38:47.19 Him and the disciples say, "Oh, it's a Gentile. 00:38:47.22\00:38:49.42 Send her away." 00:38:49.46\00:38:51.96 Jesus answers her the way the typical rabbi would 00:38:51.99\00:38:54.00 have done back then. 00:38:54.03\00:38:56.06 But He knows as soon as He knows the woman's there, 00:38:56.10\00:38:58.37 matter of fact, the only miracle He does up north 00:38:58.40\00:39:00.54 is to heal that woman's daughter 'cause He went to do it. 00:39:00.57\00:39:02.74 It's like when He crosses the sea and He heals the 00:39:02.77\00:39:04.51 demoniac, the only thing He did across that sea was 00:39:04.54\00:39:06.44 heal the demoniac. 00:39:06.47\00:39:08.04 He went to do that job. 00:39:08.08\00:39:09.88 He went to heal her daughter, but He tests her faith. 00:39:09.91\00:39:11.91 He answers her, though, kind of a harsh answer, 00:39:11.95\00:39:14.08 the way that the Jews would normally look upon 00:39:14.12\00:39:15.98 the Gentiles as dogs. 00:39:16.02\00:39:18.39 But she says, "Even the little dogs get the crumbs." 00:39:18.42\00:39:21.56 Now, keep in mind, Jesus later tells a parable 00:39:21.59\00:39:25.16 about the rich man and Lazarus where He said, 00:39:25.19\00:39:28.90 poor Lazarus who's the type of the Gentile, only 00:39:28.93\00:39:31.37 comfort he gets is the dogs lick his sores and 00:39:31.40\00:39:34.47 he's wanting the crumbs that fall from the rich man's table. 00:39:34.50\00:39:38.57 And the Bible tells us that Lazarus ends up in 00:39:38.61\00:39:41.41 Abraham's bosom, and the rich man, a symbol of the 00:39:41.44\00:39:44.55 Jewish nation, is outside. 00:39:44.58\00:39:47.25 Meaning, just because you're born in a 00:39:47.28\00:39:49.85 particular faith doesn't save you, and so Jesus was 00:39:49.88\00:39:53.22 using this and He's hoping the disciples will put 00:39:53.25\00:39:55.62 these things together. 00:39:55.66\00:39:57.76 Of course, He heals her and He says, "Woman--" 00:39:57.79\00:39:59.89 He answers her with the respect--and by the way, 00:39:59.93\00:40:02.26 the word "woman" there is, you know, He said to His 00:40:02.30\00:40:05.53 mother, "Woman." 00:40:05.57\00:40:07.70 The word "woman" there is madam. 00:40:07.74\00:40:09.74 It's a term of respect, believe it or not. 00:40:09.77\00:40:11.91 And "'Great is your faith. 00:40:11.94\00:40:14.04 Let it be to you as you desire,' and her daughter 00:40:14.08\00:40:16.11 was healed that very hour." 00:40:16.14\00:40:18.11 So He answers her prayer. 00:40:18.15\00:40:20.25 But He tries to illustrate this is the first miracle 00:40:20.28\00:40:22.35 He really does for a Gentile like this. 00:40:22.38\00:40:24.29 I think He also heals the Centurion's servant but it 00:40:24.32\00:40:26.59 stands out. 00:40:26.62\00:40:29.16 Jean: You know, what impresses me about the 00:40:29.19\00:40:31.63 verses, Jesus says to her, "I was sent except--I was 00:40:31.66\00:40:34.10 not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of 00:40:34.13\00:40:36.40 Israel," and then it says, "She came and she 00:40:36.43\00:40:38.63 worshiped Him." 00:40:38.67\00:40:40.44 So here is a Gentile recognizing the divinity 00:40:40.47\00:40:42.57 of Christ. 00:40:42.60\00:40:44.31 She's worshiping Jesus, even though she has not 00:40:44.34\00:40:46.14 yet received what she was asking for. 00:40:46.17\00:40:48.21 Doug: When He stops and talks to her, she sees an opening. 00:40:48.24\00:40:50.58 I just read through this in "The Desire of Ages" 00:40:50.61\00:40:52.61 and she saw that--you know, sometimes you read 00:40:52.65\00:40:54.85 the words, you go, "Well that was a harsh thing to say." 00:40:54.88\00:40:57.42 You have to see His face, you have to see His body language. 00:40:57.45\00:41:00.76 She understood there was mercy and an opening in 00:41:00.79\00:41:03.36 the way He said that. 00:41:03.39\00:41:05.29 He basically said, "Well, you know how the Jews are. 00:41:05.33\00:41:07.30 We're not supposed to take the children's food and 00:41:07.36\00:41:09.50 give it to the dogs," but He's smiling at her and 00:41:09.53\00:41:11.60 she felt welcome enough to come. 00:41:11.63\00:41:14.30 Jean: And you know, partly why this happened this way 00:41:14.34\00:41:17.17 is, I think, Jesus was giving His disciples an opportunity. 00:41:17.21\00:41:20.28 It was sort of a test. 00:41:20.31\00:41:22.14 Were they listening? 00:41:22.18\00:41:23.91 Were they looking at the life of Christ? 00:41:23.95\00:41:25.81 And unfortunately, in this case, they seemed to fail 00:41:25.85\00:41:27.58 the test because they say, "Send her away. 00:41:27.62\00:41:30.05 She cries after us." 00:41:30.09\00:41:31.92 Doug: Yeah, she's making a spectacle. 00:41:31.95\00:41:33.86 Jean: Yeah, so, of course, eventually the disciples 00:41:33.89\00:41:35.62 had to learn that Jesus was for everyone, not just 00:41:35.66\00:41:38.19 for the Jews. 00:41:38.23\00:41:40.03 Doug: Yeah. 00:41:40.06\00:41:42.06 Jean: That brings us to Thursday's lesson and this 00:41:42.10\00:41:44.33 is a great story too. 00:41:44.37\00:41:46.53 It talks about a student who gets it and Mark 00:41:46.57\00:41:49.50 chapter 8, verse 31, 33, we have Jesus actually 00:41:49.54\00:41:53.54 telling His disciples that He would die and yet Peter 00:41:53.58\00:41:57.98 says, "Lord, far be it from You. 00:41:58.01\00:42:00.62 This will not happen to You." 00:42:00.65\00:42:02.52 And Jesus has to say, "Get thee behind Me, Satan." 00:42:02.55\00:42:05.85 It's rather remarkable that here, the devil uses 00:42:05.89\00:42:08.59 Peter who just a little while earlier had said, 00:42:08.62\00:42:11.56 "You are the Christ," to try and tempt Jesus to not 00:42:11.59\00:42:14.66 follow through with what He knew was God's will. 00:42:14.73\00:42:17.33 Doug: Yeah, I think there's about eight times 00:42:17.37\00:42:19.50 in the Bible, seven or eight in the Gospels, 00:42:19.53\00:42:21.54 where Jesus said what His mission was, to go and to 00:42:21.57\00:42:23.47 die, and it tells us in Luke: "They understood," 00:42:23.51\00:42:26.44 this is Luke 18:34: "They understood none of those 00:42:26.47\00:42:29.28 things but this saying was hidden from them, and they 00:42:29.31\00:42:32.38 did not know the things that were spoken." 00:42:32.41\00:42:34.82 So here, He's got His apostles. 00:42:34.85\00:42:36.85 They're students and they're just not getting it. 00:42:36.89\00:42:39.55 But Mary Magdalene got it when she brought her gift. 00:42:39.59\00:42:43.32 He said, "She's anointed Me for My burial." 00:42:43.36\00:42:45.86 He understood He's going to die for my sin. 00:42:45.89\00:42:48.30 And He said, "She anointed Me in advance." 00:42:48.33\00:42:51.57 And Bartimaeus called Him the Son of David. 00:42:51.60\00:42:53.97 He understood who He was and I think maybe you want 00:42:54.00\00:42:56.40 to read that, Mark 10, verse 46. 00:42:56.44\00:42:59.21 Jean: It says: "Now when they came to Jericho, as 00:42:59.24\00:43:01.51 He went out of Jericho with His disciples, a 00:43:01.54\00:43:03.61 great multitude--with a great multitude, blind 00:43:03.65\00:43:05.81 Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the road begging. 00:43:05.85\00:43:09.88 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he 00:43:09.92\00:43:13.29 began to cry out and say, 'Jesus, Son of David, have 00:43:13.32\00:43:15.49 mercy on me!' 00:43:15.52\00:43:17.39 Then many warned him to be quiet; but he cried out 00:43:17.43\00:43:19.36 all the more, 'Son of David, have mercy on me!' 00:43:19.39\00:43:22.23 So Jesus stood still," kind of like what Jesus 00:43:22.26\00:43:24.70 did with that woman that had the demon-possessed daughter. 00:43:24.73\00:43:27.80 "So Jesus stood still and commanded him to be called. 00:43:27.84\00:43:30.47 Then they called the blind man, saying to him, 'Be of 00:43:30.51\00:43:33.24 good cheer. 00:43:33.27\00:43:35.04 Rise, He's calling you.' And throwing aside his 00:43:35.08\00:43:37.11 garment, he rose and he came to Jesus. 00:43:37.15\00:43:39.15 So Jesus asked him, said, 'What do you want Me to do 00:43:39.18\00:43:42.02 for you?' 00:43:42.05\00:43:43.82 The blind man said to Him, 'Rabboni, that I might 00:43:43.85\00:43:45.52 receive my sight.' 00:43:45.55\00:43:47.72 Then Jesus said to him, 'Go. 00:43:47.76\00:43:49.69 Go your way; your faith has made you well.' 00:43:49.72\00:43:51.73 And immediately he received his sight and followed 00:43:51.76\00:43:54.10 Jesus on the road." 00:43:54.13\00:43:56.20 Doug: It's interesting, He told the rich young ruler, 00:43:56.23\00:43:58.23 "Follow Me and you'll have treasure in heaven," and 00:43:58.27\00:44:03.44 he walks away. 00:44:03.47\00:44:05.24 He tells the blind man, "Go," and he follows Him. 00:44:05.27\00:44:07.34 And so the blind man has nothing but rags and he 00:44:07.38\00:44:10.21 throws aside his garment when he comes to Christ 00:44:10.25\00:44:13.25 which is a symbol of us, you know, a blind man's 00:44:13.28\00:44:15.75 garments probably aren't very pretty. 00:44:15.78\00:44:18.39 And he throws his garments aside and we cast aside 00:44:18.42\00:44:20.72 our righteousness, our self-righteousness when we 00:44:20.76\00:44:23.16 come to Christ. 00:44:23.19\00:44:25.59 And--but the rich man, he walks away with his royal robes. 00:44:25.63\00:44:28.36 He doesn't follow Him. 00:44:28.40\00:44:30.30 And it's just--it's such an incredible contrast and 00:44:30.33\00:44:32.23 you have both stories that aren't very far from each 00:44:32.27\00:44:34.54 other in the gospel. 00:44:34.57\00:44:36.81 And it's also similar to that lady where it says 00:44:36.84\00:44:39.01 they told Him he was crying out, "Be quiet." 00:44:39.04\00:44:41.74 He's saying, "Son of David, have mercy on me. 00:44:41.78\00:44:43.71 Son of David." 00:44:43.75\00:44:45.71 He calls all the louder. 00:44:45.75\00:44:47.85 Now, I think in one of the Gospels it actually says 00:44:47.88\00:44:49.68 that there's two blind men and outside of Jericho and 00:44:49.72\00:44:51.69 it's probably the same story, just that one was 00:44:51.72\00:44:54.72 more--Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, was more 00:44:54.76\00:44:58.09 outspoken, and he follows Jesus down the road. 00:44:58.13\00:45:02.13 He's got nothing but his vision but he's happy. 00:45:02.16\00:45:05.87 And you know, they say that you can give a man a 00:45:05.90\00:45:09.60 fish, and you feed him for a day. 00:45:09.64\00:45:12.27 You can teach him to fish, and you can feed him for a lifetime. 00:45:12.31\00:45:16.04 And Jesus said, "Look, I could give you a donation 00:45:16.08\00:45:19.31 'cause you're a beggar on the roadside or I can give 00:45:19.35\00:45:22.22 you your sight and then you can work." 00:45:22.25\00:45:25.09 And so, you know, He gave him what he really needed, 00:45:25.12\00:45:27.52 so he's rejoicing. 00:45:27.56\00:45:29.36 Said, "I'm not worried about a donation. 00:45:29.39\00:45:31.19 I'm interested in now I've got my sight." 00:45:31.23\00:45:33.60 Jean: Yeah, I think it also teaches us that 00:45:33.63\00:45:35.40 sometimes in order for us to realize the gift that 00:45:35.43\00:45:37.23 Christ wants to give us, we have to sort of reach 00:45:37.27\00:45:39.20 rock bottom. 00:45:39.23\00:45:41.04 You have the rich man who walked away sorrowful. 00:45:41.07\00:45:43.51 He didn't follow Jesus. 00:45:43.54\00:45:45.51 He had all these riches, whereas Bartimaeus had 00:45:45.54\00:45:47.78 nothing and the little bit that he did have, he was 00:45:47.81\00:45:50.71 willing to cast aside for Jesus. 00:45:50.75\00:45:53.48 Doug: Another important point in this story is 00:45:53.52\00:45:55.85 when he was calling out, "Son of David, have mercy 00:45:55.88\00:45:58.45 on me," the crowd told him to be quiet but it said 00:45:58.49\00:46:00.59 "Many" told him to be quiet. 00:46:00.62\00:46:03.22 They said, "You're making a spectacle," just like 00:46:03.26\00:46:05.19 the disciples said about that woman, "She's crying 00:46:05.23\00:46:07.03 after us." 00:46:07.10\00:46:08.93 So one of the things we learn about Jesus is that 00:46:08.96\00:46:11.00 Jesus is patient with people and something else 00:46:11.03\00:46:13.40 is He doesn't always answer the first time we ask. 00:46:13.44\00:46:16.04 With Bartimaeus and with that woman, they kept 00:46:16.07\00:46:19.34 crying after Him. 00:46:19.37\00:46:21.21 Sometimes people--I know our friends who are 00:46:21.24\00:46:23.31 listening may be praying about an issue, praying 00:46:23.35\00:46:25.78 for victory, praying your eyes are opened, praying 00:46:25.81\00:46:28.32 for someone else you love, and you may have to pray 00:46:28.35\00:46:30.55 for a while. 00:46:30.59\00:46:32.55 Because God doesn't answer right away does not mean 00:46:32.59\00:46:34.39 He's not going to answer and it doesn't mean He 00:46:34.42\00:46:36.39 doesn't love you. 00:46:36.42\00:46:38.43 God honors persistence, is a very important lesson here. 00:46:38.46\00:46:40.90 Jean: So when we look at Jesus the Master Teacher, 00:46:40.93\00:46:43.37 we can see different qualities and 00:46:43.40\00:46:45.27 characteristics and these qualities are the 00:46:45.30\00:46:47.47 qualities of God the Father 'cause Jesus came 00:46:47.50\00:46:50.21 to reveal what God is like, and just as Jesus 00:46:50.24\00:46:53.48 came to reveal the truth about God, so Jesus wants 00:46:53.51\00:46:56.41 His followers to reveal the truth. 00:46:56.44\00:46:59.18 And in Hebrews we find Paul speaking to the 00:46:59.21\00:47:02.38 church and he says, "You ought to be teachers by 00:47:02.42\00:47:06.09 now, but you need somebody to teach you again the 00:47:06.12\00:47:08.09 first principles of the oracles of God." 00:47:08.12\00:47:10.03 This is Hebrews chapter 5, verse 12. 00:47:10.06\00:47:12.23 So the real goal of the Christian is not just to 00:47:12.26\00:47:14.30 stay on the milk which is being unskilled in the 00:47:14.30\00:47:17.37 Word, but as Paul says, he wants us to have solid 00:47:17.40\00:47:20.50 food and grow up into the full stature of what 00:47:20.54\00:47:24.41 Christ wants us to be. 00:47:24.44\00:47:26.64 Doug: Yeah, absolutely. 00:47:26.68\00:47:28.68 And so--and not only does Paul say this here, I 00:47:28.71\00:47:30.78 think Peter also said, you know, we should desire the 00:47:30.81\00:47:33.45 sincere milk of the Word, but we shouldn't be just 00:47:33.48\00:47:36.42 eating baby pabulum all the time. 00:47:36.45\00:47:39.52 Now, there's a time for that and, you know, the 00:47:39.55\00:47:41.66 challenge for a pastor is if you've got, you know, 00:47:41.69\00:47:44.46 several people in your congregation, you're going 00:47:44.49\00:47:47.10 to have some people that are children, babies, in 00:47:47.13\00:47:49.16 their faith, they've just come to Christ, and then 00:47:49.20\00:47:51.63 you're going to have some that may be all their 00:47:51.67\00:47:53.80 lives and they want the meat, and you've got to 00:47:53.84\00:47:56.04 kind of mix up a little bit of something for 00:47:56.07\00:47:57.91 everybody when you're preaching. 00:47:57.94\00:48:00.04 But--and Jesus did that. 00:48:00.08\00:48:02.01 He would do parables that had incredible depth and 00:48:02.04\00:48:04.08 yet the kids would sit there and go, "I get it," 00:48:04.11\00:48:06.28 you know? 00:48:06.31\00:48:08.15 There was something real simple in it that they 00:48:08.18\00:48:12.12 something much deeper that had meat in, in the 00:48:12.15\00:48:14.29 parable as well. 00:48:14.32\00:48:16.32 And He modeled that teaching for us that we 00:48:16.36\00:48:17.86 should follow. 00:48:17.89\00:48:20.13 Jean: We'd like to remind those who are joining us 00:48:20.16\00:48:21.96 about our free offer. 00:48:22.00\00:48:23.83 It is a book living? 00:50:48.31\00:50:50.78 Doug Batchelor: Hi, friends. 00:50:50.81\00:50:52.68 This is Pastor Doug Batchelor. 00:50:52.71\00:50:55.08 Many people are wondering if the world's about to implode. 00:50:55.12\00:50:57.62 Some are fearful that global events point to a 00:50:57.65\00:50:59.59 coming crisis unlike anything we've ever witnessed. 00:50:59.62\00:51:03.02 Did you know the Bible book of Revelation 00:51:03.06\00:51:05.29 actually speaks about the days in which we're living now? 00:51:05.33\00:51:08.70 And it contains a message of hope, if we would only listen. revelationnow.com. 00:51:27.88\00:51:31.55 ¤¤¤ 00:51:31.59\00:51:36.39 male: I grew up in a church-going family. 00:51:36.42\00:51:38.99 I mean, we were at every meeting. 00:51:39.03\00:51:41.06 I sang in four of the choirs there, I directed three. 00:51:41.10\00:51:45.10 Very involved, very active. 00:51:45.13\00:51:48.47 It almost seemed like busy work sometimes, you know? 00:51:48.50\00:51:51.17 I went to Sunday school, I knew about God, I knew 00:51:51.21\00:51:55.14 about Jesus. 00:51:55.18\00:51:57.38 But I didn't have a personal relationship with 00:51:57.41\00:51:59.45 Jesus Christ. 00:51:59.48\00:52:02.08 My senior year in high school I got the news that 00:52:02.12\00:52:06.99 my father had been murdered. 00:52:07.02\00:52:10.29 Now, I played it off well. 00:52:10.33\00:52:12.43 No one really saw that I was struggling with it. 00:52:12.46\00:52:18.47 It just really felt like there was a hole that 00:52:18.50\00:52:21.20 needed to be filled and I tried to fill it with 00:52:21.24\00:52:23.87 drugs, with alcohol, with partying. 00:52:23.91\00:52:27.51 After college, I just stopped going to church altogether. 00:52:27.54\00:52:32.31 One day, on a Sunday, 'cause I didn't feel like 00:52:32.35\00:52:36.48 going to church with my mom, I thought, you know, 00:52:36.52\00:52:40.19 "I should get a little bit of Word." 00:52:40.22\00:52:43.66 She had the satellite system hooked up and I'm 00:52:43.69\00:52:45.86 flipping through channels. 00:52:45.89\00:52:48.00 And then the logo pops across, "Amazing Facts Presents." 00:52:48.03\00:52:50.40 I've listened to a lot of different ministers but 00:52:50.43\00:52:54.14 this was the first time that he's actually saying 00:52:54.17\00:52:56.97 something where I had to grab my Bible and actually 00:52:57.01\00:52:59.54 pick it up and I've never heard this before. 00:52:59.57\00:53:02.68 Let me look through and find this. 00:53:02.71\00:53:04.95 I went through all the historicals, I went 00:53:04.98\00:53:06.95 through all the study guides and I just couldn't 00:53:06.98\00:53:09.02 get enough. 00:53:09.05\00:53:10.95 And then the Sabbath came up and he's going through 00:53:10.99\00:53:13.09 the appeal and I'm just going, "Lord, I hear You. 00:53:13.12\00:53:16.09 I have to go to church." 00:53:16.12\00:53:18.23 So I show up. 00:53:18.26\00:53:20.06 It was funny, I didn't feel like I was going to 00:53:20.10\00:53:21.96 be judged, anything judgmental, anything. 00:53:22.00\00:53:25.07 And I walked in the door, and I just felt at home. 00:53:25.10\00:53:27.60 But there's still a problem. 00:53:27.64\00:53:30.54 I'm still partying. 00:53:30.57\00:53:33.24 I was still going out to the bars. 00:53:33.27\00:53:35.54 At this time, I was selling cocaine to pay my rent. 00:53:35.58\00:53:38.98 Sixteen days later, I find myself in a life or 00:53:39.01\00:53:43.18 death situation. 00:53:43.22\00:53:45.59 I had just came back from a liquor store and I 00:53:45.62\00:53:47.86 grabbed a bottle of vodka. 00:53:47.89\00:53:50.49 And there I am, high off cocaine, with my Bible in 00:53:50.53\00:53:54.10 hand, trying to do a Bible study. 00:53:54.10\00:53:57.13 And I heard an audible voice, "Just look at yourself." 00:53:57.17\00:54:04.71 And I did, and I was, like, "What am I doing?" 00:54:04.74\00:54:10.48 And I got on my knees and I said, "Lord, if You do 00:54:10.51\00:54:13.38 not take this away from me now, I'm going to kill myself." 00:54:13.42\00:54:19.35 I was going to continue this lifestyle and I was 00:54:19.39\00:54:21.62 going to end up overdosing, having a heart 00:54:21.66\00:54:24.46 attack, whatever it was. 00:54:24.49\00:54:27.03 "You have to take this away, all of it." 00:54:27.03\00:54:31.70 And that day, He lift it all up and away from me. 00:54:31.73\00:54:37.91 It was all gone. 00:54:37.94\00:54:40.08 When God does something in your life, He does it complete. 00:54:40.11\00:54:45.55 ¤¤¤ 00:54:45.58\00:54:51.85 Doug: Every now and then, in the panorama of history 00:55:15.68\00:55:17.58 we hear about individuals that go from the lowest 00:55:17.61\00:55:20.15 depths to the highest pinnacles. 00:55:20.18\00:55:22.58 They emerge from the shackles of prison to lead 00:55:22.62\00:55:25.02 and inspire a nation. 00:55:25.05\00:55:28.26 Take Joseph, for instance. 00:55:28.29\00:55:30.29 He's sold by his brothers as a slave, then falsely 00:55:30.33\00:55:32.76 accused and thrust into prison. 00:55:32.79\00:55:34.76 Yet, through a series of divine circumstances, he 00:55:34.83\00:55:37.07 miraculously goes from the prison to the palace, 00:55:37.10\00:55:40.24 ruling the ones who once imprisoned him. 00:55:40.27\00:55:42.70 Sound far-fetched? 00:55:42.74\00:55:44.51 It's happened in history more than you think. 00:55:44.54\00:55:46.91 South Africa is the home of just such a leader. 00:55:46.94\00:55:49.54 Nelson Mandela worked tirelessly to establish 00:55:49.58\00:55:52.65 peace and freedom in his country and his influence 00:55:52.68\00:55:55.25 was felt around the world. 00:55:55.28\00:55:58.19 Before freedom, there must be forgiveness. 00:55:58.22\00:56:01.02 Like Joseph, who was unjustly accused for a 00:56:01.06\00:56:03.19 crime he did not commit, Nelson Mandela was accused 00:56:03.22\00:56:06.06 of terrorism and sentenced to life in prison on 00:56:06.09\00:56:08.83 Robben Island. 00:56:08.86\00:56:10.90 He was often exposed to cruel punishment and 00:56:10.93\00:56:12.77 abuse, but even in the midst of apparent failure 00:56:12.80\00:56:15.47 and discouragement, he never lost heart, he never 00:56:15.50\00:56:17.71 gave up. 00:56:17.74\00:56:19.94 After years in prison, a growing number of 00:56:19.97\00:56:22.18 supporters rallied for his release and, eventually, 00:56:22.21\00:56:24.38 it took place. 00:56:24.41\00:56:26.45 And God used him so that he was instrumental in 00:56:26.48\00:56:28.45 helping to abolish racial segregation in the country 00:56:28.48\00:56:30.55 of South Africa. 00:56:30.59\00:56:32.79 Incredibly, he now was virtually the absolute 00:56:32.82\00:56:34.62 leader in the country that had imprisoned him. 00:56:34.66\00:56:37.23 He had all of the tools and the power at his 00:56:37.26\00:56:39.23 disposal to get even with the prison guards and 00:56:39.26\00:56:41.43 others that had mistreated him. 00:56:41.46\00:56:43.67 Instead, Mandela chose forgiveness. 00:56:43.70\00:56:46.60 It reminds me of that verse in the Bible in 00:56:46.63\00:56:48.50 Ephesians chapter 4, verse 32: "Let all bitterness, 00:56:48.54\00:56:52.31 and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and railing be put 00:56:52.34\00:56:54.88 away from you, with all malice: and be ye kind one 00:56:54.91\00:56:57.95 to another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, even 00:56:57.98\00:57:01.58 as God also in Christ forgave you." 00:57:01.62\00:57:04.89 I'm so thankful that Nelson Mandela, like 00:57:04.92\00:57:07.46 Joseph, chose to forgive those who were once his 00:57:07.49\00:57:10.23 enemies and to serve his nation with love and courage. 00:57:10.26\00:57:13.66 You can find a number of examples of this happening 00:57:13.70\00:57:15.76 in the Bible. 00:57:15.80\00:57:17.70 You have Daniel who was a captive from the land of 00:57:17.73\00:57:19.80 Judah and yet God arranged things where he becomes 00:57:19.83\00:57:22.00 the prime minister in the kingdom of Babylon. 00:57:22.04\00:57:24.37 You have Esther who was a poor orphan girl in Persia. 00:57:24.41\00:57:27.08 And yet, God worked things out where she becomes the 00:57:27.11\00:57:29.54 queen of that country. 00:57:29.58\00:57:31.75 The book of Jeremiah ends with an incredible story 00:57:31.78\00:57:33.68 of a young king named Jehoiakim who is in the 00:57:33.72\00:57:36.62 Babylonian dungeon for 37 years and then King 00:57:36.65\00:57:39.09 Evil-Merodach has mercy on him and he has a new 00:57:39.12\00:57:42.22 status, going from the prison to the palace. 00:57:42.26\00:57:44.86 This is what the Lord wants to do for you and me, friends. 00:57:44.89\00:57:47.23 He gives you the bread of life, He gives you the 00:57:47.23\00:57:49.13 robe of Jesus' righteousness. 00:57:49.16\00:57:50.87 He gives you a seat at His table. 00:57:50.90\00:57:52.63 If you accept His forgiveness and you're 00:57:52.67\00:57:54.60 willing to pass it on, you and I can live and reign 00:57:54.64\00:57:57.17 with Christ. 00:57:57.21\00:57:58.51 Wouldn't you like that experience? 00:57:58.54\00:58:00.81 ¤¤¤ 00:58:00.84\00:58:10.82 ¤¤¤ 00:58:10.85\00:58:20.83 ¤¤¤ 00:58:20.86\00:58:26.20
