public evangelism. 00:02:29.94\00:02:32.28 Right now, with all that's happening in the world 00:02:32.31\00:02:34.25 with the natural disasters and the pandemics 00:02:34.28\00:02:37.32 and the social and political unrest, people are wondering, 00:02:37.35\00:02:41.26 "What in the world is going on?" 00:02:41.29\00:02:42.59 Well, the Bible has those answers, 00:02:42.62\00:02:44.83 and you've got 00:03:49.06\00:03:51.39 and get into today's study. 00:03:51.43\00:03:53.56 Loving Lord, we just thank You again for the gift You gave us 00:03:53.60\00:03:56.90 in Your Word and the gift You gave us in Jesus 00:03:56.93\00:04:00.24 who is the living Word. 00:04:00.27\00:04:02.00 And as we focus our attention on Him today and His example 00:04:02.04\00:04:05.81 to us as a teacher, I pray that we can all be edified 00:04:05.84\00:04:09.04 and learn and follow. 00:04:09.08\00:04:10.81 And we pray this in Jesus's name, amen. 00:04:10.85\00:04:14.52 All right, well, today we're dealing with the subject 00:04:14.55\00:04:16.85 in our lesson on education. 00:04:16.89\00:04:19.12 We're looking at Jesus as the great educator, 00:04:19.15\00:04:21.59 and we have a memory verse that comes to us from 2 Corinthians 00:04:21.62\00:04:24.66 4, verse 6, and it says, "For this is God who commanded light 00:04:24.69\00:04:29.43 to shine out of darkness, who has shone forth in our hearts 00:04:29.46\00:04:33.47 to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory 00:04:33.50\00:04:35.94 of God in the face of Jesus Christ." 00:04:35.97\00:04:40.68 The only way that you and I can behold the Father is really 00:04:40.71\00:04:43.11 as it is reflected in the life and teachings of Jesus. 00:04:43.14\00:04:46.88 Jesus came as a reflection of the Father, 00:04:46.92\00:04:49.95 and I should probably begin by just laying out some simple 00:04:49.98\00:04:54.36 but important truths. 00:04:54.39\00:04:55.69 Christ came principally for three reasons. 00:04:55.72\00:04:57.86 One, He came to show us what the Father is like, 00:04:57.89\00:05:01.26 and we'll get into those 00:05:01.30\00:05:02.60 Scriptures more in just a moment. 00:05:02.63\00:05:04.23 Two, He came as--to give us an example 00:05:04.27\00:05:07.34 that we should live as He lived. 00:05:07.37\00:05:09.47 He teaches us not only about what God is like. 00:05:09.50\00:05:12.14 He teaches us how we should live for and love each other. 00:05:12.17\00:05:16.98 And the third reason, He came as a sacrifice, 00:05:17.01\00:05:19.41 our substitute, to die in our place, 00:05:19.45\00:05:22.32 and each of us then must accept Him as our sacrifice, 00:05:22.35\00:05:26.89 and then we study Him as our example and our demonstration 00:05:26.92\00:05:31.19 of who the Father is. 00:05:31.23\00:05:32.63 So, with that in mind, let's talk a little bit about how 00:05:32.66\00:05:36.03 was Jesus a great teacher. 00:05:36.06\00:05:37.57 How did He teach? What was His method? 00:05:37.60\00:05:40.67 Well, for one thing--this is not in your lesson, 00:05:40.70\00:05:42.94 but I thought I wanted to start out with this. 00:05:42.97\00:05:46.21 Jesus astonished His students. 00:05:46.24\00:05:51.15 You know, I think it's so important 00:05:51.18\00:05:53.28 for teachers out there. 00:05:53.31\00:05:55.28 Keep your students engaged. Yeah, keep their attention. 00:05:55.32\00:06:00.06 That doesn't mean you need to resort to silly antics to do it, 00:06:00.09\00:06:04.26 unless there's a good lesson in it, 00:06:04.29\00:06:06.53 but I struggled through school, I've just got to tell you. 00:06:06.56\00:06:09.53 And one of the big problems I had when I was in school 00:06:09.56\00:06:12.37 is every now and then I had some boring teachers, 00:06:12.40\00:06:16.27 and, you know, I learned to hold my breath 00:06:16.30\00:06:19.31 for four minutes and ten seconds. 00:06:19.34\00:06:22.11 You can do it. 00:06:22.14\00:06:23.48 People who hold the records, I think it's like 16 minutes. 00:06:23.51\00:06:25.81 People can hold their breath much longer than that, 00:06:25.85\00:06:27.48 but most people, after a minute, they're ready to pass out. 00:06:27.52\00:06:30.49 But I can hold my breath for four minutes and ten seconds, 00:06:30.52\00:06:34.29 and one of the ways I learned doing 00:06:34.32\00:06:36.02 that is I was so bored in class. 00:06:36.06\00:06:38.83 There was this big Wes clock on the wall. 00:06:38.86\00:06:41.20 I'd wait for it to get to where it buzzed me on to the next 00:06:41.23\00:06:43.67 class so I could get through the school day I was enduring, 00:06:43.70\00:06:48.20 and I'd just see--I'd hyperventilate and see how long 00:06:48.24\00:06:51.17 I could hold my breath, just for something to do. 00:06:51.21\00:06:53.44 I'd count the ceiling tiles because sometimes 00:06:53.48\00:06:55.94 the teachers were so difficult to listen to. 00:06:55.98\00:06:58.91 You know, if you're going to be a teacher, be interesting. 00:06:58.95\00:07:00.72 The Bible says Jesus astonished His students, 00:07:00.75\00:07:05.29 and one way that you do that is when people hear the truth 00:07:05.32\00:07:07.99 for the first time it's amazing. 00:07:08.02\00:07:09.92 That's why I like the name "Amazing Facts." 00:07:09.96\00:07:12.19 Right away, people say, "I want to hear something amazing. 00:07:12.23\00:07:14.36 I want to be amazed." 00:07:14.36\00:07:15.76 And the word "astonished" here, it actually means 00:07:15.80\00:07:18.57 in the original--it means shocked, amazed, struck. 00:07:18.60\00:07:23.30 And when they heard Him teach--let me give you 00:07:23.34\00:07:26.21 a few verses that help illustrate this. 00:07:26.24\00:07:29.41 Luke 4:32, "And they were astonished at His teaching, 00:07:29.44\00:07:34.08 for His Word was with authority." 00:07:34.12\00:07:36.48 Jesus taught with conviction. 00:07:36.52\00:07:38.62 You know, sometimes you hear people teach, 00:07:38.65\00:07:40.36 and they go, "Well, you know, it could mean this, 00:07:40.39\00:07:43.02 and it could mean that. 00:07:43.06\00:07:44.36 Nobody really knows exactly what it means." 00:07:44.39\00:07:45.99 And that doesn't leave you with anything definitive to hang 00:07:46.03\00:07:49.03 your faith on, so there needs to be a teaching with conviction. 00:07:49.06\00:07:52.90 You read similar verse after He gives the Sermon 00:07:52.93\00:07:55.50 on the Mount in Matthew chapter 7. 00:07:55.54\00:07:57.81 Jesus says in verse 28, "And so it was, 00:07:57.84\00:08:00.91 when Jesus had ended these sayings, 00:08:00.94\00:08:03.38 the people were astonished at His teaching, 00:08:03.41\00:08:06.68 for He taught them as one having authority, 00:08:06.72\00:08:09.42 not as the scribes." 00:08:09.45\00:08:11.32 No, the scribes didn't teach with authority. 00:08:11.35\00:08:13.66 I think that if you're going to be a teacher, 00:08:13.69\00:08:15.56 a Bible teacher, if you're teaching on any kind of subject, 00:08:15.59\00:08:20.50 don't be wishy-washy about it. 00:08:20.53\00:08:22.00 Teach with authority. Teach with conviction. 00:08:22.03\00:08:24.93 Put yourself in what you're teaching so that people know 00:08:24.97\00:08:29.37 that you really believe what it is that you're actually saying. 00:08:29.40\00:08:33.21 So, He taught them, and they were astonished 00:08:33.24\00:08:36.04 because it was so unusual. 00:08:36.08\00:08:37.71 Another reason we know that Jesus was an interesting 00:08:37.75\00:08:40.38 teacher, how many times was it that Christ taught all day long? 00:08:40.42\00:08:45.09 And the Bible tells us that He said, 00:08:45.12\00:08:46.86 "Look, we need to send the people away to eat, 00:08:46.89\00:08:49.29 because they haven't eaten all day." 00:08:49.32\00:08:50.93 They'd sit and listen to Him for hours, 00:08:50.96\00:08:52.53 and yet most churches where I preach or teach, 00:08:52.56\00:08:56.20 I know if I go a little long I can see the body language 00:08:56.23\00:08:59.57 of the people out there listening. 00:08:59.60\00:09:01.04 And they start kind of looking around, 00:09:01.07\00:09:02.80 and they start--they try to--you know, 00:09:02.84\00:09:04.81 and I've done it before myself. 00:09:04.84\00:09:06.14 They try to find graceful ways to look at their watch 00:09:06.17\00:09:07.88 without looking like they're looking at their watch, 00:09:07.91\00:09:10.35 and so they kind of take their hand and slip it 00:09:10.38\00:09:12.15 upon their sleeve, and look down, wondering, 00:09:12.18\00:09:15.08 "How long is this going to be? 00:09:15.12\00:09:16.75 Well, he's going long. 00:09:16.79\00:09:18.09 Dinner is going to be cold when we get home." 00:09:18.12\00:09:24.26 But Jesus's teaching was so engaging, 00:09:24.29\00:09:26.73 people lost track of time. 00:09:26.76\00:09:29.30 You've probably heard some good storytellers before. 00:09:29.33\00:09:33.67 That they can just keep you on the edge of your seat 00:09:33.70\00:09:35.50 indefinitely, or you maybe heard a good sermon or something 00:09:35.54\00:09:40.28 where you just can't wait to hear more in a series. 00:09:40.31\00:09:44.38 Well, when we teach we want to follow the pattern of Jesus 00:09:44.41\00:09:47.68 and be an interesting teacher. 00:09:47.72\00:09:50.52 That means you may need to look around for some sermon 00:09:50.55\00:09:53.25 illustrations that provide windows into the subject, 00:09:53.29\00:09:56.56 help people to see what you're saying. 00:09:56.59\00:09:59.36 If you quote--and I do this a lot, I know. 00:09:59.39\00:10:01.70 If you just quote one verse after another, 00:10:01.73\00:10:03.87 people's eyes can tend to glaze over. 00:10:03.90\00:10:05.90 But if you create pictures for them to see while 00:10:05.93\00:10:09.14 you're teaching, a lot of people think in pictures. 00:10:09.17\00:10:11.41 Help them to see what you're saying. 00:10:11.44\00:10:14.68 Seeing is a very important part of teaching the gospel. 00:10:14.71\00:10:18.71 The Bible tells us that Paul saw the Lord, 00:10:18.75\00:10:22.58 that Zacchaeus wanted to see the Lord. 00:10:22.62\00:10:25.69 That the thief crucified with Christ, 00:10:25.72\00:10:27.42 that was saved, he saw the Lord, and so we need to be able 00:10:27.46\00:10:30.69 to help people see the message. 00:10:30.73\00:10:33.03 You're looking in Matthew chapter 13, verse 54. 00:10:33.06\00:10:37.77 "When He had come into His own country, 00:10:37.80\00:10:39.83 He taught them in the synagogue," taught them 00:10:39.87\00:10:42.00 in their synagogue, "so they were astonished, 00:10:42.04\00:10:45.41 and they said, 'Where did this man get this wisdom 00:10:45.44\00:10:47.84 and these mighty works?'" 00:10:47.88\00:10:50.81 Astonished again. 00:10:50.85\00:10:52.38 Look in John chapter 7, verse 45. 00:10:52.41\00:10:55.18 "Then the officers came to the chief priests and the Pharisees, 00:10:55.22\00:10:58.32 who said to them, 'Why have you not brought Him?'" 00:10:58.35\00:11:00.86 See, the chief priests and Pharisees sent the temple guard, 00:11:00.89\00:11:03.46 and they said, "Go arrest Him." 00:11:03.49\00:11:05.16 They didn't want to do it themselves because 00:11:05.19\00:11:06.66 they were afraid of the mob, so they sent the temple guard. 00:11:06.70\00:11:09.60 Well, the temple guard stood on the outside of the crowd, 00:11:09.63\00:11:11.83 and they listened to Jesus teach. 00:11:11.87\00:11:13.17 They thought, "We'll arrest Him at the end of His sermon." 00:11:13.20\00:11:16.07 But as they were listening, 00:11:16.10\00:11:17.41 they just could not bring themselves to arrest Him. 00:11:17.44\00:11:19.21 Why? 00:11:19.24\00:11:20.54 They said, "Why haven't you arrested Him?" 00:11:20.58\00:11:22.11 They said, "No man ever spoke like this man," and so there 00:11:22.14\00:11:27.52 was definitely something powerful about the teachings 00:11:27.55\00:11:30.15 of Jesus, and, of course, 00:11:30.19\00:11:31.69 we have those teachings in the gospel. 00:11:31.72\00:11:34.02 I sure wish I could hear an audio tape and, 00:11:34.06\00:11:37.03 of course, I understood Aramaic, but I wish I could hear 00:11:37.06\00:11:40.43 an audiotape of Jesus and hear His voice, 00:11:40.46\00:11:44.73 hear the inflection, hear the melody, 00:11:44.77\00:11:47.40 hear the resonance of how He taught, 00:11:47.44\00:11:49.84 because, you know, a lot of what happens when you're teaching 00:11:49.87\00:11:53.41 is not just the words. 00:11:53.44\00:11:55.01 It's in the tone. 00:11:55.04\00:11:56.44 It's even the body language, what's happening visually 00:11:56.48\00:12:00.75 when a person's teaching that says a lot. 00:12:00.78\00:12:03.42 And I look forward in heaven to asking my angel to take me 00:12:03.45\00:12:05.79 to the video library so I can say, "I want to see the videos 00:12:05.82\00:12:10.19 of Jesus teaching and how He could keep thousands of people 00:12:10.23\00:12:13.90 spellbound all day long, hanging on every word." 00:12:13.93\00:12:17.63 Even the children were not distracted. 00:12:17.67\00:12:19.97 They were keyed in on what He was saying. 00:12:20.00\00:12:23.47 "Never a man spoke like this man." 00:12:23.51\00:12:26.01 All right, so one of the principal things that Jesus 00:12:26.04\00:12:28.48 did as a teacher is He came to reveal the Father, 00:12:28.51\00:12:31.91 and when we are teaching, of course, 00:12:31.95\00:12:36.05 we want to be revealing Christ, and in revealing Christ 00:12:36.08\00:12:39.79 we're revealing the Father. 00:12:39.82\00:12:41.59 In John chapter 1, verse 18, "No one has seen God at any time. 00:12:41.62\00:12:48.66 The only begotten Son, who's in the bosom of the Father, 00:12:48.70\00:12:52.17 He has declared Him." 00:12:52.20\00:12:53.87 Now, the reason this issue is so important 00:12:53.90\00:12:57.24 is because the world doesn't know God. 00:12:57.27\00:13:02.18 Eternal life comes from knowing God. 00:13:02.21\00:13:05.61 The Bible tells us, "This is life eternal," John chapter 17, 00:13:05.65\00:13:08.88 "that they might know thee, the only true God, 00:13:08.92\00:13:11.65 and Jesus Christ whom You've sent." 00:13:11.69\00:13:13.56 What will Jesus say to the lost? 00:13:13.59\00:13:15.92 "I don't know you." 00:13:15.96\00:13:17.69 And the world has a terrible misconception of God. 00:13:17.73\00:13:20.50 Now, there is--some people view God as a policeman up in the sky 00:13:20.53\00:13:27.60 with a billy club, and He's waiting for us to do something 00:13:27.64\00:13:30.04 wrong so He can thump us. 00:13:30.07\00:13:31.91 Or they view Him like an angry Greek god that is just watching 00:13:31.94\00:13:36.01 so that He can be entertained by zapping us with lightning, 00:13:36.04\00:13:39.15 or sending us through trial and tragedy so that it could 00:13:39.18\00:13:42.75 entertain Him and keep Him interested. 00:13:42.78\00:13:45.05 Or then there's the opposite extreme. 00:13:45.09\00:13:47.32 Some think that God is sort of a heavenly Santa Claus, 00:13:47.36\00:13:50.59 like a grandfather that you can do no wrong. 00:13:50.63\00:13:53.93 They don't see Him as a just King. 00:13:53.96\00:13:56.33 And even in the church, there's a lot of people out there 00:13:56.36\00:13:58.73 that have terrible misconceptions of God. 00:13:58.77\00:14:01.24 Not understanding who God is, yeah, 00:14:01.27\00:14:05.24 it can lead to not knowing Him and not being ready 00:14:05.27\00:14:08.31 for His coming. 00:14:08.34\00:14:09.91 We need to know who He is. 00:14:09.94\00:14:12.11 Jesus came to clear up the misconceptions about who God is, 00:14:12.15\00:14:18.79 to show us in word and in deed and in action what God is like. 00:14:18.82\00:14:25.23 You know, sometimes I'm frustrated because I meet 00:14:25.26\00:14:28.13 people, and they say, "You know, I like the God 00:14:28.16\00:14:31.00 of the New Testament, but I don't care much 00:14:31.03\00:14:32.63 for the God of the Old Testament." 00:14:32.67\00:14:34.87 And I'm always amazed by that because I say, 00:14:34.90\00:14:36.91 "They're the same God." 00:14:36.94\00:14:38.91 They say, "Oh, well, in the Old Testament you've got plagues 00:14:38.94\00:14:41.78 and blood and fire. 00:14:41.81\00:14:43.38 In the New Testament you got Jesus's love 00:14:43.41\00:14:45.45 and mercy and forgiveness." 00:14:45.48\00:14:47.08 And I say, "Wait a second now. 00:14:47.12\00:14:48.88 In the Old Testament you've got God's love." 00:14:48.92\00:14:51.52 He says, "My mercies are new every day. 00:14:51.55\00:14:53.99 I love you with an everlasting love." 00:14:54.02\00:14:56.49 And in the New Testament, go to Revelation, 00:14:56.52\00:14:58.83 you got blood and fire and plagues, 00:14:58.86\00:15:00.90 and so it is the same God. 00:15:00.93\00:15:03.63 That's why Jesus said--well, let me read it to you here. 00:15:03.67\00:15:07.17 Revealing the Father. 00:15:07.20\00:15:08.50 John 14, verse 6, and I'll be reading through verse 11. 00:15:08.54\00:15:12.57 "I am the way, the truth, and the life. 00:15:12.61\00:15:15.68 No one comes to the Father except through Me. 00:15:15.71\00:15:18.71 If you had known Me--" 00:15:18.75\00:15:20.48 Notice the emphasis on "knowing Me." 00:15:20.52\00:15:22.25 "If you had known Me, you would have known My Father," 00:15:22.28\00:15:25.49 so that's the key right now. 00:15:25.52\00:15:26.82 If we know Jesus, you will know the Father, 00:15:26.86\00:15:28.59 'cause They're the same. 00:15:28.62\00:15:29.92 Christ is a mirror image. They are one of the Father. 00:15:29.96\00:15:33.93 "If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; 00:15:33.96\00:15:36.67 and from now on you know Him because you've seen Him." 00:15:36.70\00:15:40.90 And they don't know what He's saying. 00:15:40.94\00:15:42.30 Christ is saying, "If you've seen Me, 00:15:42.34\00:15:43.64 you've seen the Father." 00:15:43.67\00:15:44.97 "Philip said to Him, 'Lord, show us the Father, 00:15:45.01\00:15:47.84 and it's sufficient for us.'" 00:15:47.88\00:15:49.78 Now, there's nothing wrong really with what Philip's 00:15:49.81\00:15:52.68 saying, because after all, what did Moses say? 00:15:52.71\00:15:55.62 What was that audacious prayer of Moses? 00:15:55.65\00:15:59.22 He said, "Lord, let me see Your glory." 00:15:59.25\00:16:01.89 And God said, "Well, no man can see My face and live." 00:16:01.92\00:16:05.49 And so, for those in the Bible where it says they saw the Lord, 00:16:05.53\00:16:08.73 they probably did not look into the unveiled, 00:16:08.76\00:16:11.27 undiminished glory of God the Father, 00:16:11.30\00:16:14.14 because people have seen the glory of the Son, 00:16:14.17\00:16:17.31 but no man has seen the unveiled glory of the Father. 00:16:17.34\00:16:19.87 There are times when Michael, Christ in His pre-incarnate 00:16:19.91\00:16:26.82 position, he appeared, when Joshua knelt down before 00:16:26.85\00:16:31.85 the commander of the Lord, and when Jacob wrestled, 00:16:31.89\00:16:34.86 and when Manoah and his wife, the parents of Samson, 00:16:34.89\00:16:38.39 they said, "We've seen God. 00:16:38.43\00:16:39.73 We're going to die." 00:16:39.76\00:16:41.06 Well, they probably saw God the Son, 00:16:41.10\00:16:42.53 who veiled His glory in some way, 00:16:42.56\00:16:45.00 but no man has seen the Father at any time. 00:16:45.03\00:16:48.77 The best we can do is to look at the Father through Christ. 00:16:48.80\00:16:53.11 I remember several times-- you ever seen an eclipse? 00:16:53.14\00:16:56.28 Well, you can't stare into the sun in an eclipse. 00:16:56.31\00:16:59.18 It's very bad for your eyes. 00:16:59.21\00:17:00.98 You can injure your eyes. 00:17:01.02\00:17:02.48 But I remember even as a kid in New York City, 00:17:02.52\00:17:05.65 we had a comparatively clear day, 00:17:05.69\00:17:07.49 and there was an eclipse, and we went to Central Park. 00:17:07.52\00:17:09.52 And our teacher told us how to make a pinhole in a piece 00:17:09.56\00:17:15.00 of cardboard, and then we had a piece of paper, 00:17:15.03\00:17:20.04 and we let the light of the sun shine through that pinhole 00:17:20.07\00:17:23.84 on the piece of paper. 00:17:23.87\00:17:25.17 Held it at a certain distance, and you could see the moon 00:17:25.21\00:17:28.91 moving across the sun through that little pinhole. 00:17:28.94\00:17:33.05 We couldn't look directly into the undiminished glory 00:17:33.08\00:17:35.65 of the sun, or we couldn't handle it. 00:17:35.68\00:17:37.75 You'd be injured. 00:17:37.79\00:17:39.09 But we can look through the reflection, 00:17:39.12\00:17:41.69 and this is sort of what Jesus did. 00:17:41.72\00:17:43.22 He came kind of like--when I used to weld--I used to do a lot 00:17:43.26\00:17:48.26 of welding, and when you use an arc welder it's a very bright 00:17:48.30\00:17:52.00 light, and it will hurt your eyes. 00:17:52.03\00:17:53.80 And so, they got a special lens you wear on your helmet. 00:17:53.84\00:17:56.44 The helmet is partly to keep the sparks 00:17:56.47\00:17:57.87 from burning off your hair. 00:17:57.91\00:17:59.31 No, that's not what happened to mine, 00:17:59.34\00:18:00.81 but you've got the sparks, keeps you from burning you. 00:18:00.84\00:18:03.48 But then, there's that little tinted--it's like hyper-powered 00:18:03.51\00:18:06.31 sunglass that shields your eyes. 00:18:06.35\00:18:09.42 You can look at it, but you have to look at it through 00:18:09.45\00:18:11.75 this special filter, or it will just burn your eyes. 00:18:11.79\00:18:14.96 Christ came to basically filter down the glory of God 00:18:14.99\00:18:19.09 so we could see God. 00:18:19.13\00:18:20.46 We could handle it. 00:18:20.50\00:18:21.76 That's why Paul says when it gets--you finally do get 00:18:21.80\00:18:24.37 to heaven in your glorified body and your glorified eyes, 00:18:24.40\00:18:27.94 says then we will see His face. 00:18:27.97\00:18:30.41 And that's why Paul says the eye has not seen, 00:18:30.44\00:18:33.01 the ear has not heard the things that God has prepared for those 00:18:33.04\00:18:36.04 that love Him, because in our earthly condition 00:18:36.08\00:18:38.08 we couldn't handle the glory. 00:18:38.11\00:18:39.65 So, "God so loved the world He sent His only begotten Son, 00:18:39.68\00:18:44.75 that whoever believes in Him might not perish, 00:18:44.79\00:18:47.02 but have everlasting life." 00:18:47.06\00:18:48.39 We can see what God is like through Jesus, 00:18:48.42\00:18:52.89 so Philip says, "Lord, show us the Father." 00:18:52.93\00:18:55.00 Like Moses, "I want to see Your glory." 00:18:55.03\00:18:58.27 And Jesus said, "Have I been with you this long 00:18:58.30\00:19:01.20 and you've not known Me, Philip?" 00:19:01.24\00:19:03.61 He calls him by name. There's tenderness there. 00:19:03.64\00:19:06.27 "He who has seen Me has seen the Father; 00:19:06.31\00:19:09.78 so how can you say, 'Show us the Father'? 00:19:09.81\00:19:12.38 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, 00:19:12.41\00:19:14.98 and the Father is in Me? 00:19:15.02\00:19:16.65 The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own 00:19:16.69\00:19:19.52 authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. 00:19:19.55\00:19:24.06 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me, 00:19:24.09\00:19:28.43 or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves." 00:19:28.46\00:19:32.57 When we are moved by the Spirit, when we look at the Son, 00:19:32.60\00:19:36.20 we are seeing the Father, because the Father, 00:19:36.24\00:19:38.34 the Son, and the Spirit, hear, O Israel, 00:19:38.37\00:19:41.08 the Lord our God is one. 00:19:41.11\00:19:42.74 They are perfectly united. 00:19:42.78\00:19:44.38 They're interconnected, and so their characters-- 00:19:44.41\00:19:47.35 there's no conflict in their characters. 00:19:47.38\00:19:49.78 And so, when the Spirit speaks to us, 00:19:49.82\00:19:51.42 when Jesus speaks to us, when we behold Them, 00:19:51.45\00:19:53.89 we see the Father. 00:19:53.92\00:19:55.26 And then, He says, "Believe that I'm in the Father, 00:19:55.29\00:19:57.76 the Father in Me, or believe Me for the sakes 00:19:57.79\00:20:00.80 of the works themselves." 00:20:00.83\00:20:03.37 Look in 2 Corinthians 4:6, and this is, of course, 00:20:03.40\00:20:07.00 our memory verse. 00:20:07.04\00:20:08.47 "For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, 00:20:08.50\00:20:12.94 who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge 00:20:12.97\00:20:17.65 of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ." 00:20:17.68\00:20:21.72 There's a light of God that shines 00:20:21.75\00:20:24.12 in our hearts through Christ. 00:20:24.15\00:20:25.65 We can actually experience the Father in our hearts. 00:20:25.69\00:20:29.76 And if you look in Colossians 1:15, 00:20:29.79\00:20:32.59 "He is the image of the invisible God, 00:20:32.63\00:20:35.53 the firstborn over all creation," still talking about 00:20:35.56\00:20:40.97 the image of the invisible God. 00:20:41.00\00:20:42.50 The firstborn over all creation. Jesus is the image of God. 00:20:42.54\00:20:46.54 Now, we're not supporting idolatry or making images, 00:20:46.57\00:20:50.88 but Christ is the reflection of what God is like. 00:20:50.91\00:20:54.78 And if you look at it in Hebrews chapter 1, 00:20:54.82\00:20:57.15 verse 2 and 3, it says, "God has in these last days spoken 00:20:57.19\00:21:02.56 to us by His Son, whom He's appointed heir of all things, 00:21:02.59\00:21:07.66 through whom also He made the worlds." 00:21:07.73\00:21:09.90 That's an interesting verse, 00:21:09.93\00:21:11.23 'cause it says He not only made all things, 00:21:11.27\00:21:13.03 He made other worlds, it's plural there. 00:21:13.07\00:21:16.67 "Who being the brightness of His glory and the express image 00:21:16.71\00:21:21.41 of His person--" 00:21:21.44\00:21:24.01 And so Jesus is the express image 00:21:24.05\00:21:26.21 of the person of God. 00:21:26.25\00:21:28.35 So, when you talk about the Holy Spirit, 00:21:28.38\00:21:30.85 He's a little difficult to describe. 00:21:30.89\00:21:32.45 Holy Spirit's got--you know, He's sometimes portrayed 00:21:32.49\00:21:37.19 as fire, wind, dove, water, these ethereal forces. 00:21:37.23\00:21:43.50 And so, when I say picture Jesus, 00:21:43.53\00:21:46.43 you get a picture in your mind, and depending on the paintings 00:21:46.47\00:21:49.17 that you saw when you were growing up, 00:21:49.20\00:21:50.94 probably one of those will drop into your mental picture. 00:21:50.97\00:21:54.51 When I say picture the Father, typically people picture 00:21:54.54\00:21:57.78 the Father with a body with arms and legs and a head 00:21:57.81\00:22:01.92 and eyes and a mouth, often a beard. 00:22:01.95\00:22:04.39 I've never heard anybody say, "I pictured God the Father, 00:22:04.42\00:22:07.26 and He didn't have a beard." 00:22:07.29\00:22:08.96 It's just hard to picture God the Father shaving, you know? 00:22:08.99\00:22:11.83 So, He's got a beard, and He's often sitting on His throne, 00:22:11.86\00:22:16.13 not so much walking around, but He's got a body. 00:22:16.16\00:22:19.13 And so, Christ is the express image of the Father. 00:22:19.17\00:22:22.17 We do believe that we were made in the image of God, 00:22:22.20\00:22:24.57 and we were made with bodies, and there's probably 00:22:24.61\00:22:27.48 a lot of similarity between our body and that of Adam 00:22:27.51\00:22:30.95 and that of God, and so Christ is a reflection of that. 00:22:30.98\00:22:35.48 "Express image of His person, and upholding--" 00:22:35.52\00:22:37.59 Still in Hebrews chapter 1, verse 2 and 3, and it says, 00:22:37.62\00:22:43.16 "Upholding all things by the word of His power, 00:22:43.19\00:22:46.16 when He had by Himself purged our sins. 00:22:46.19\00:22:49.10 He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high." 00:22:49.13\00:22:53.80 And then, if you look in John 12, verse 44. 00:22:53.84\00:22:56.91 "Then Jesus cried out and said, 'He who believes in Me is not 00:22:56.94\00:23:01.28 in Me but in Him who sent Me. 00:23:01.31\00:23:03.51 And he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me." 00:23:03.55\00:23:07.62 How could that be more clear? 00:23:07.65\00:23:09.65 That if you see Jesus, you're seeing the Father. 00:23:09.68\00:23:12.75 Sometimes people have a misconception, 00:23:12.79\00:23:14.69 talking about the misconceptions about God, 00:23:14.72\00:23:17.13 that God is the angry judge. 00:23:17.16\00:23:19.36 He's up in heaven, He's sitting at His judicial bar, 00:23:19.39\00:23:21.86 and He's got a great big wooden mallet in His hand, 00:23:21.90\00:23:25.07 and He's just waiting to slam the mallet down and say, 00:23:25.10\00:23:27.20 "Guilty, guilty, execute him." 00:23:27.24\00:23:30.04 And Jesus is the loving God. 00:23:30.07\00:23:31.61 He's up there, and He spreads out His nail-pierced hands. 00:23:31.64\00:23:33.88 He's pleading with the Father, "Father, please don't be angry. 00:23:33.91\00:23:36.54 Forgive them for My sake." 00:23:36.58\00:23:38.01 "Oh, all right, if you insist." 00:23:38.05\00:23:39.81 And so, it's almost got the picture of God the Father 00:23:39.85\00:23:42.35 is the angry one, and God the Son is the one who's 00:23:42.38\00:23:46.45 the merciful one pleading for us, 00:23:46.49\00:23:48.36 but that's the wrong picture. 00:23:48.39\00:23:50.03 Jesus said God so loved the world He sent His son, 00:23:50.06\00:23:54.40 and Jesus said the Father Himself loves you, 00:23:54.46\00:23:58.50 so Jesus is a reflection of the love of God for us. 00:23:58.53\00:24:01.87 And not only is God a good judge. 00:24:01.90\00:24:04.54 He is a just King and a Judge. 00:24:04.57\00:24:06.74 Jesus is also going to be a judge, 00:24:06.78\00:24:09.54 and the Bible talks about the wrath of the Lamb. 00:24:09.58\00:24:12.58 So, people often focus on just the mercy of Jesus 00:24:12.61\00:24:16.05 and the justice of the Father, but you've got the justice 00:24:16.08\00:24:18.79 of Jesus and the mercy of the Father. 00:24:18.82\00:24:20.42 You've got both of Them because They're the same. 00:24:20.46\00:24:22.99 They both have all those characteristics of being loving, 00:24:23.02\00:24:26.83 longsuffering, meek, merciful, just. 00:24:26.86\00:24:31.67 There is judgment, there is wrath, 00:24:31.70\00:24:34.67 and there's ultimate punishment. 00:24:34.70\00:24:37.31 They both have all those characteristics that you see, 00:24:37.34\00:24:40.88 and Jesus came to reflect that. 00:24:40.91\00:24:43.78 And you read, of course, in John, 00:24:43.81\00:24:45.71 the Gospel of John, chapter 1, verse 14, 00:24:45.75\00:24:48.22 "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, 00:24:48.25\00:24:51.69 and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten 00:24:51.72\00:24:55.66 of the Father, full of grace and truth." 00:24:55.69\00:24:59.06 And so, we see that God the Father is full of grace 00:24:59.09\00:25:01.80 and truth, and that's reflected in Jesus, God the Son. 00:25:01.83\00:25:06.94 You know, there's a good quote in the book "Education" 00:25:06.97\00:25:10.47 by E.G. White on the subject. 00:25:10.51\00:25:12.44 It says, "Everything Jesus did in His life 00:25:12.47\00:25:15.21 on Earth had a single purpose: 00:25:15.24\00:25:18.11 the revelation of God for the uplifting of humanity." 00:25:18.15\00:25:22.98 In a little bit we're going to be doing that "Revelation Now" 00:25:23.02\00:25:25.29 program, and the first words in the book of Revelation are 00:25:25.32\00:25:28.99 "the revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him." 00:25:29.02\00:25:33.90 And so, the whole book begins by saying, 00:25:33.93\00:25:35.90 "This is a revelation of Christ, and Christ is a revelation 00:25:35.93\00:25:38.77 of the Father," and so says that there in that quote. 00:25:38.80\00:25:44.67 You know, there's a touching story 00:25:44.71\00:25:48.24 that's given in the lesson. 00:25:48.28\00:25:50.81 When Billy Graham was going through a hospital, 00:25:50.85\00:25:52.68 it was a field hospital during one of the overseas wars, 00:25:52.71\00:25:56.65 and came to visit the troops, 00:25:56.69\00:25:58.65 and he's getting a tour with a general. 00:25:58.69\00:26:01.09 And they pass by one particular soldier who is in very grave 00:26:01.12\00:26:06.39 condition, and he must stay on his stomach, 00:26:06.43\00:26:09.70 and he's in a metal contraption. 00:26:09.73\00:26:11.13 And he's been severely injured, and he's kind of in traction, 00:26:11.17\00:26:14.70 and he can only look down below the canvas that's holding him. 00:26:14.74\00:26:21.64 And when he hears that the general is walking by, 00:26:21.68\00:26:24.78 he said, "General, I'd like to see your face." 00:26:24.81\00:26:26.78 He said, "I'd like to see who it is I've been fighting for." 00:26:26.82\00:26:29.55 Well, the only way the general could talk to him was he had 00:26:29.58\00:26:31.65 to get on his hands and knees and scooted underneath 00:26:31.69\00:26:34.56 the soldier's contraption that was holding him 00:26:34.59\00:26:38.46 and looked up into his face. 00:26:38.49\00:26:39.83 And Billy Graham said he saw a tear fall from the soldier's 00:26:39.86\00:26:43.10 eyes on the face of the general. 00:26:43.13\00:26:45.30 He stayed under there, and he talked to the soldier. 00:26:45.33\00:26:48.47 And Jesus did that. 00:26:48.50\00:26:50.67 He showed compassion on us, and He got down 00:26:50.71\00:26:53.54 so that we could see His face. 00:26:53.58\00:26:55.44 You know, someday we'll be in heaven. 00:26:55.48\00:26:57.18 We'll see the face of the Father. 00:26:57.21\00:26:58.81 God Himself will be with us. 00:26:58.85\00:27:00.22 We've been separated from God by sin, 00:27:00.25\00:27:02.58 but that's the purpose of the plan of salvation. 00:27:02.62\00:27:05.95 When you read about Michael in the Bible, 00:27:05.99\00:27:07.62 the archangel, people wonder, "Who is he? 00:27:07.66\00:27:10.03 Is he the same as Gabriel, just a different angel?" 00:27:10.06\00:27:14.00 People often get confused about this and, 00:27:14.00\00:27:16.23 you know, in the church, some of the churches, 00:27:16.26\00:27:17.97 they say you got a angel called Michael, 00:27:18.00\00:27:19.70 and you got an angel called Gabriel. 00:27:19.73\00:27:21.04 Then, you got an angel called Raphael. 00:27:21.07\00:27:22.67 Raphael is not mentioned in the Bible, 00:27:22.70\00:27:24.27 but in the Catholic Church they've got Raphael thrown 00:27:24.31\00:27:26.34 in there somehow. 00:27:26.37\00:27:27.68 But Michael in the Bible is called the archangel. 00:27:27.71\00:27:31.11 Most of the Protestant theologians believe 00:27:31.15\00:27:33.15 this is really--this is the captain of the Lord's army. 00:27:33.18\00:27:37.39 It is a pre-incarnation name for Christ. 00:27:37.42\00:27:40.99 No, Jesus is not an angel. We don't believe that. 00:27:41.02\00:27:43.36 We believe Jesus is the perfect Son of God. 00:27:43.39\00:27:47.50 He is equal with the Son of God, but the word "angel" 00:27:47.56\00:27:50.80 simply means "messenger," and the primary messenger 00:27:50.83\00:27:54.30 to our Earth is Christ that God sent. 00:27:54.34\00:27:58.01 And now, let me give you some proof for that. 00:27:58.04\00:28:00.81 1 Thessalonians chapter 4, "The Lord Himself will descend 00:28:00.84\00:28:04.25 from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel," 00:28:04.28\00:28:07.42 the Lord with the voice of the archangel. 00:28:07.45\00:28:10.15 The Bible tells us in Daniel chapter 12, 00:28:10.19\00:28:12.52 "At that time Michael will stand up, 00:28:12.55\00:28:15.09 the great prince that stands for the children of thy people." 00:28:15.12\00:28:17.93 Who is our great Prince of princes that stands 00:28:17.96\00:28:20.10 on our behalf? 00:28:20.13\00:28:21.40 That's Christ. 00:28:21.43\00:28:22.73 You read in the book of Jude, verse 9. 00:28:22.76\00:28:24.10 It says then Michael, when disputing with the devil over 00:28:24.13\00:28:27.10 the body of Jesus, he comes to resurrect Moses-- 00:28:27.14\00:28:31.01 not the body of Jesus, the body of Moses. 00:28:31.04\00:28:34.11 He comes to resurrect Moses. 00:28:34.14\00:28:36.14 And he says, "The Lord rebuke thee." 00:28:36.18\00:28:37.88 Same words that Jesus spoke to the devil in the wilderness, 00:28:37.91\00:28:41.28 and so he comes to resurrect. 00:28:41.32\00:28:42.72 Jesus is the resurrection. 00:28:42.75\00:28:44.35 So, when you look at the characteristics of Michael 00:28:44.39\00:28:47.99 in the Bible, the few times he appears, 00:28:48.02\00:28:49.66 he is usually--it's a term that describes 00:28:49.69\00:28:52.59 the pre-incarnate Christ, the great messenger of God. 00:28:52.63\00:28:56.60 And then you go to Revelation, 00:28:56.63\00:28:57.97 and you got the head of all evil. 00:28:58.00\00:29:00.44 It says the dragon. 00:29:00.47\00:29:01.80 Now, the dragon is a symbolic name for the devil. 00:29:01.84\00:29:04.54 It's a symbolic name in Revelation. 00:29:04.57\00:29:06.44 He fights Michael, and his angels fight. 00:29:06.47\00:29:09.28 Well, if the word "dragon" is a symbolic name, 00:29:09.31\00:29:11.65 we shouldn't be surprised if the word "Michael" is a symbolic 00:29:11.68\00:29:14.95 name for the greatest power of good, which is Christ. 00:29:14.98\00:29:19.45 So, yes, many of the Protestant scholars believe that--people 00:29:19.49\00:29:23.69 like Adam Clarke and Matthew Henry and others-- 00:29:23.73\00:29:25.99 they believe Michael is just really a name 00:29:26.03\00:29:28.00 for the pre-incarnate Jesus. 00:29:28.03\00:29:31.60 In Matthew 11, verse 27, "All things have been delivered to Me 00:29:31.63\00:29:36.04 by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father," 00:29:36.07\00:29:40.08 meaning no one on Earth really knows the Son, 00:29:40.11\00:29:42.44 except the Father. 00:29:42.48\00:29:44.05 "Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, 00:29:44.08\00:29:47.05 and the one to whom the Son will reveal Him." 00:29:47.08\00:29:51.62 And so, Jesus came to reveal the Father to us. 00:29:51.65\00:29:55.82 How do we get that revelation? 00:29:55.86\00:29:58.06 Through constant association with Him. 00:29:58.09\00:30:00.63 We'll be talking about this later in our sermon today 00:30:00.66\00:30:03.10 when we talk about abiding in Christ. 00:30:03.13\00:30:05.93 John 5:37, "And the Father Himself, 00:30:05.97\00:30:09.97 who sent Me, has testified of Me. 00:30:10.01\00:30:13.41 And you have neither heard His voice at any time, 00:30:13.44\00:30:16.58 nor seen His form." 00:30:16.61\00:30:17.91 Now, there again you've got those verses that remind us 00:30:17.95\00:30:20.85 no man has seen God the Father, but Jesus, 00:30:20.88\00:30:24.05 who is the Son, He came to reveal Him. 00:30:24.09\00:30:26.99 And Christ is the revelation, of course, of God. 00:30:27.02\00:30:31.53 John 17, verse 20, "I do not pray for these alone, 00:30:31.56\00:30:36.93 but also for those who will believe in Me 00:30:36.97\00:30:38.90 through their word; that they may be one, 00:30:38.93\00:30:41.60 as You, Father, are in Me--" 00:30:41.64\00:30:43.74 Now, there is an important truth, 00:30:43.77\00:30:45.47 that God the Father was in Christ, 00:30:45.51\00:30:48.18 reconciling the world to Himself. 00:30:48.21\00:30:50.21 "You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; 00:30:50.25\00:30:53.28 that they also may be one in Us, that the world might believe 00:30:53.31\00:30:57.09 that You sent Me." 00:30:57.12\00:30:58.35 Now, how important is it for us to understand who the Father is? 00:30:58.39\00:31:01.89 Says that "the world might believe that You sent Me." 00:31:01.92\00:31:05.76 It's through seeing the Father in the Son, knowing who God is. 00:31:05.79\00:31:10.20 "And the glory that You gave Me I have given them, 00:31:10.23\00:31:13.50 that they may be one just as We are one." 00:31:13.54\00:31:16.30 That's a pretty tall order. 00:31:16.34\00:31:18.01 The oneness that the Father and the Son experience, 00:31:18.04\00:31:21.04 through the Holy Spirit in us we can experience with God 00:31:21.08\00:31:24.01 the Father and the Son. 00:31:24.05\00:31:25.55 Wow, don't you want that experience? 00:31:25.58\00:31:28.75 "I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, 00:31:28.78\00:31:34.79 and that the world may know that You have sent Me, 00:31:34.82\00:31:37.99 and that You've loved them and You've loved Me." 00:31:38.03\00:31:40.06 So just picture for a second here. 00:31:40.10\00:31:41.36 You've got this raspberry juice, 00:31:41.40\00:31:45.83 and you've got this blueberry juice. 00:31:45.87\00:31:48.84 And you pour the raspberry juice into the blueberry juice, 00:31:48.87\00:31:51.77 and now you've got a new berry cocktail when you have those 00:31:51.81\00:31:54.24 two things, the Father and the Son in one. 00:31:54.28\00:31:56.61 But then, you take the water, that's us, 00:31:56.64\00:31:59.61 and you pour it in, and all of a sudden it takes on 00:31:59.65\00:32:02.92 all the characteristics of the raspberries and the blueberries. 00:32:02.95\00:32:06.35 And so, you've got God in Christ, 00:32:06.39\00:32:08.46 and then They are together. 00:32:08.49\00:32:10.49 They are one, but when we are 00:32:10.53\00:32:11.89 in Christ we are also in the Father. 00:32:11.93\00:32:14.30 We get in the mixture. 00:32:14.36\00:32:15.56 We get all the sweetness and the nutrients of that relationship. 00:32:15.60\00:32:20.57 So, there's another great quote from the book "Education," page 00:32:20.60\00:32:24.91 74 through 76, and it said, 00:32:24.94\00:32:27.91 "Christ came to restore this knowledge. 00:32:27.94\00:32:30.48 He came to set aside the false teachings by which those 00:32:30.51\00:32:34.08 who claim to know God had misrepresented Him. 00:32:34.12\00:32:37.52 And He came to manifest the nature of His law and to reveal 00:32:37.55\00:32:41.39 His own character-- in His own character 00:32:41.42\00:32:43.96 the beauty of holiness." 00:32:43.99\00:32:46.26 Christ came to tell something about the beauty 00:32:46.29\00:32:48.03 and the holiness of God and His character. 00:32:48.06\00:32:51.37 All right, moving on. 00:32:51.40\00:32:54.54 We're going to talk now about reading the Master's-Teacher's 00:32:54.57\00:32:58.44 mind, reading into the mind of the Master Teacher. 00:32:58.47\00:33:02.38 If you look in Philippians chapter 2, verse 5, 00:33:02.41\00:33:05.41 "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ 00:33:05.45\00:33:08.78 Jesus, who, being in the form of God, 00:33:08.82\00:33:12.42 did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 00:33:12.45\00:33:15.86 but made Himself of no reputation." 00:33:15.89\00:33:18.23 So, He said, you know, He was fully equal with God. 00:33:18.26\00:33:21.26 He's in the form of God. 00:33:21.30\00:33:23.30 Wasn't robbery for him to compare himself with God. 00:33:23.33\00:33:25.87 He said, "Before Abraham was, I am." 00:33:25.90\00:33:28.64 He said that He is like the self-existent One. 00:33:28.67\00:33:32.27 But, "He made Himself of no reputation, 00:33:32.31\00:33:36.54 taking the form of a bondservant, 00:33:36.58\00:33:38.38 and coming in the likeness of men." 00:33:38.41\00:33:40.68 So, having the Teacher's mind. 00:33:40.72\00:33:42.12 When we have Christ in us, while we might have an experience 00:33:42.15\00:33:46.45 of God, we're not to act like God in being domineering, 00:33:46.49\00:33:50.63 but we're to have a spirit of meekness as Jesus did. 00:33:50.66\00:33:53.96 Jesus came. He said, 00:33:54.00\00:33:55.26 "Look, I'm your teacher. 00:33:55.30\00:33:56.63 I'm your Lord and Master, yet I'm kneeling down. 00:33:56.67\00:33:58.57 I'm washing your feet, so if I, your Lord and Master, 00:33:58.60\00:34:01.64 have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet." 00:34:01.67\00:34:05.04 Said, "I did not come to rule." 00:34:05.07\00:34:07.04 Jesus did not come to domineer. 00:34:07.08\00:34:09.74 He didn't come to boss us around. 00:34:09.78\00:34:11.11 He said, "I've come as one to serve," and so we should 00:34:11.15\00:34:14.58 be servants as Jesus was. 00:34:14.62\00:34:16.75 And then something else that we learn about Jesus 00:34:16.79\00:34:19.49 is the style of His teaching. 00:34:19.52\00:34:20.99 Jesus was what you would call-- 00:34:21.02\00:34:24.26 He used the Socratic method of teaching. 00:34:24.29\00:34:27.86 Now, that phrase most of you know. 00:34:27.86\00:34:29.73 The Socratic method of teaching is based on that ancient Greek 00:34:29.76\00:34:33.64 philosopher Socrates, who was famous 00:34:33.67\00:34:36.94 for teaching his students by asking questions. 00:34:36.97\00:34:40.58 And from all we read about Socrates, 00:34:40.61\00:34:42.41 he was a good man. 00:34:42.44\00:34:43.98 He basically died for not accepting the pantheon of Greek 00:34:44.01\00:34:47.68 gods, and he said we should spend our time 00:34:47.72\00:34:51.22 in seeking after God, our lives. 00:34:51.25\00:34:54.06 And, you know, they made him drink hemlock, 00:34:54.09\00:34:56.39 but he was famous for teaching his students by asking the right 00:34:56.42\00:35:01.13 questions to draw out answers and teaching them to think 00:35:01.16\00:35:04.70 for themselves and how to arrive at the right conclusions. 00:35:04.73\00:35:08.47 Now, it's not that Jesus learned this from Socrates, 00:35:08.50\00:35:11.01 but I think probably the Spirit of God, 00:35:11.04\00:35:13.44 of Christ taught this to Socrates, 00:35:13.48\00:35:16.54 because all knowledge comes from God, really. 00:35:16.58\00:35:19.31 But Jesus used this method of asking questions to teach 00:35:19.35\00:35:23.89 and let me give you an example. 00:35:23.92\00:35:26.52 And he started young in doing this. 00:35:26.55\00:35:28.49 Luke chapter 2, verse 45, "So when they didn't find Him--" 00:35:28.52\00:35:32.39 They're coming--this is after--Jesus was 12 years old. 00:35:32.43\00:35:36.03 He went to the Passover with His family, 00:35:36.06\00:35:38.43 and when the Passover was over all the family 00:35:38.47\00:35:41.17 got in the procession, started heading back north, 00:35:41.20\00:35:43.20 up towards Nazareth. 00:35:43.24\00:35:44.97 And in the process, after a couple of days, 00:35:45.01\00:35:46.81 they noticed, "We haven't seen Jesus." 00:35:46.84\00:35:48.64 Oh, He was 12, you know, and He's pretty responsible, 00:35:48.68\00:35:51.11 and they weren't worried about Him, 00:35:51.15\00:35:52.48 but after two days they didn't see Him, 00:35:52.51\00:35:53.85 then they really started to fret. 00:35:53.88\00:35:55.52 They turned around, they backtracked, 00:35:55.55\00:35:57.22 and they couldn't find Him anywhere. 00:35:57.25\00:35:58.59 And they asked everybody and finally they all went back 00:35:58.62\00:36:00.92 to the place where they last saw Him in the temple. 00:36:00.96\00:36:04.73 And there He was, and it says, "Now when after three days they 00:36:04.76\00:36:10.63 found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, 00:36:10.67\00:36:14.60 both listening to them and," here's this precocious 00:36:14.64\00:36:19.91 12-year-old genius, "asking them questions." 00:36:19.94\00:36:24.78 And He was probably asking questions that would evoke 00:36:24.81\00:36:27.85 answers, and He was teaching somewhat through these 00:36:27.88\00:36:30.32 questions, because as a 12-year-old you wouldn't 00:36:30.35\00:36:32.05 want to dare say, "Listen up, sit up, pay attention, 00:36:32.09\00:36:34.16 I'm going to teach you, you Pharisees, something," 00:36:34.19\00:36:36.73 so He did it meekly in the form of a question. 00:36:36.76\00:36:40.00 "And all who heard Him were astonished." 00:36:40.03\00:36:42.16 There you've got His astonished teaching again. 00:36:42.20\00:36:44.23 "All who heard Him were astonished at His understanding 00:36:44.27\00:36:47.07 and His answers." 00:36:47.10\00:36:48.74 So, He's not only asking, he's answering. 00:36:48.77\00:36:51.17 "And when they saw Him, his parents were amazed, 00:36:51.21\00:36:53.21 said, 'Son, why have You done this to us? 00:36:53.24\00:36:55.18 Look, Your father and I have sought You 00:36:55.21\00:36:57.21 sorrowing, anxiously.' 00:36:57.25\00:36:58.98 He said to them, 'Why did you seek Me? 00:36:59.01\00:37:01.12 Did you not know I must be about My Father's business?'" 00:37:01.15\00:37:04.02 There He is again, here reflecting the teaching 00:37:04.05\00:37:06.86 and the business of the Father. 00:37:06.89\00:37:09.19 "But they did not understand the statement 00:37:09.22\00:37:11.39 which He made to them." 00:37:11.43\00:37:13.60 Jesus taught with questions. 00:37:13.63\00:37:16.26 This is part of a good education. 00:37:16.30\00:37:17.80 Matthew 16, verse 13 through 16. 00:37:17.83\00:37:21.27 You know, when I teach-- I do evangelism, 00:37:21.30\00:37:24.44 and I'm probably more of a teacher than a preacher. 00:37:24.47\00:37:27.51 And, of course, depends on what your concept is. 00:37:27.54\00:37:29.58 I know there are some pastors that--they 00:37:29.61\00:37:32.85 kind of romp around the stage and yell and scream 00:37:32.88\00:37:36.48 and wave their arms, and they call that preaching, 00:37:36.52\00:37:41.26 but I think I like to use questions. 00:37:41.29\00:37:44.46 And if you've ever been to one of our evangelistic programs, 00:37:44.49\00:37:47.86 I started using lessons with a question-and-answer format right 00:37:47.86\00:37:51.23 when I entered into evangelism, because if you just sit 00:37:51.27\00:37:54.20 there and drone on you lose people's attention. 00:37:54.24\00:37:56.24 But every time you ask someone a question, 00:37:56.27\00:37:59.34 you grab their attention. 00:37:59.37\00:38:00.78 We're kind of trained by our social lives that when someone 00:38:00.81\00:38:03.38 asks us a question, you've got to redirect your attention 00:38:03.41\00:38:06.38 and tune back in, and so Jesus often did this. 00:38:06.41\00:38:09.72 He asked questions. 00:38:09.75\00:38:11.85 And Matthew chapter 16, verse 13, 00:38:11.89\00:38:14.46 "When they came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, 00:38:14.49\00:38:16.99 He said to His disciples, 'Who do men say that I, 00:38:17.03\00:38:20.23 the Son of Man, am?' 00:38:20.26\00:38:22.60 They said, 'Well, some say John the Baptist, 00:38:22.63\00:38:24.43 some say Elijah, others say Jeremiah 00:38:24.47\00:38:26.10 or one of the prophets.' 00:38:26.13\00:38:27.60 He said, 'But who do you say that I am?'" 00:38:27.64\00:38:29.54 Again, another question. 00:38:29.57\00:38:31.41 "Simon Peter answered and said, 'You're the Christ, 00:38:31.44\00:38:33.68 the Son of the living God.'" 00:38:33.71\00:38:35.21 Was Jesus asking because He didn't know? 00:38:35.24\00:38:37.08 He knows all things. He knew the answer. 00:38:37.11\00:38:38.75 He was asking to draw out their thinking. 00:38:38.78\00:38:41.88 Did they really know who He was? 00:38:41.92\00:38:44.35 And sometimes you need to articulate it. 00:38:44.39\00:38:46.59 He got them to say it. 00:38:46.62\00:38:48.72 In Luke 20, verse 24, Jesus said, "'Show Me a denarius. 00:38:48.76\00:38:54.10 Whose image and inscription does it have?' 00:38:54.10\00:38:56.60 They said, 'Caesar's.'" 00:38:56.63\00:38:58.17 Again, He's going to teach them by asking questions. 00:38:58.20\00:39:01.20 Luke 10:36. 00:39:01.24\00:39:02.60 And I could use a lot of examples of this. 00:39:02.64\00:39:04.81 He said, "So which of these three do you think was neighbor 00:39:04.84\00:39:08.18 to him that fell among thieves?" 00:39:08.21\00:39:09.91 He tells the parable of the Good Samaritan. 00:39:09.94\00:39:12.25 He closes with a question to get them to think. 00:39:12.28\00:39:16.12 They had a hard time admitting that it was the Samaritan 00:39:16.15\00:39:18.95 that was the neighbor. 00:39:18.99\00:39:21.42 Luke 7:42, "And when they had nothing with which to repay, 00:39:21.46\00:39:25.93 he freely forgave them both. 00:39:25.96\00:39:27.40 Tell Me, which of them will love them more?" 00:39:27.40\00:39:30.07 And He poses this question to Simon. 00:39:30.10\00:39:32.50 He's teaching with questions, that's Socratic method. 00:39:32.53\00:39:36.64 Now, let's talk a little bit about--well, wait. 00:39:36.67\00:39:39.27 I want to tell you a story talking about Jesus 00:39:39.31\00:39:42.34 as the Master Teacher. 00:39:42.38\00:39:44.51 I remember hearing this story-- I believe it's true-- 00:39:44.55\00:39:47.78 about years ago, there was a missionary that was going 00:39:47.82\00:39:53.12 to some islands in the Hebrides, and the boat he was on, 00:39:53.15\00:40:01.53 it was caught in a storm, and it was turned over, capsized. 00:40:01.56\00:40:08.80 Well, he was separated from the other three missionaries 00:40:08.84\00:40:11.44 that he was traveling with, 00:40:11.47\00:40:13.31 and they somehow made it into the lifeboat. 00:40:13.34\00:40:16.54 He got a piece of driftwood. 00:40:16.58\00:40:18.28 He ends up floating for a day and a half, 00:40:18.31\00:40:20.72 nearly dying of thirst. 00:40:20.75\00:40:22.08 He's washed up on this island. 00:40:22.12\00:40:23.42 In the process of being washed up on this atoll island, 00:40:23.45\00:40:26.99 he's beaten on the coral by the waves as he comes in. 00:40:27.02\00:40:30.53 He tries with his hands and his feet to walk on the coral 00:40:30.56\00:40:33.80 without cutting himself up too badly, 00:40:33.83\00:40:35.33 and he terribly scars his hands and his feet 00:40:35.36\00:40:37.77 and his side and his head. 00:40:37.80\00:40:40.57 He gets to the island, and he collapses. 00:40:40.60\00:40:43.57 The natives see him, and they're not threatened because 00:40:43.61\00:40:45.31 he's obviously very weak, and they kind of give him 00:40:45.34\00:40:47.84 some coconut water and nurse him back to health, 00:40:47.88\00:40:50.45 and he ends up living with them. 00:40:50.48\00:40:54.08 Takes a while. He learns the language. 00:40:54.12\00:40:56.05 He doesn't have his missionary materials, 00:40:56.08\00:40:58.25 he doesn't have his Bible, but he does his best to show them 00:40:58.29\00:41:01.66 what Jesus was like. 00:41:01.69\00:41:03.79 And so, he has some knowledge of medicine. 00:41:03.83\00:41:06.39 He healed some of their sicknesses. 00:41:06.43\00:41:08.60 He prays for them and many of them are made well. 00:41:08.63\00:41:11.03 As much as he learns their language, 00:41:11.07\00:41:12.80 he tries to demonstrate what the gospel is. 00:41:12.83\00:41:16.24 Well, he lives with them for several years, 00:41:16.27\00:41:18.34 and he goes and he visits the different villages 00:41:18.37\00:41:20.58 that are on this island. 00:41:20.61\00:41:23.01 So, ten years later a boat with three missionaries paddles up 00:41:23.04\00:41:27.95 to this island. 00:41:27.98\00:41:29.32 Lo and behold, it's his companions that had launched 00:41:29.35\00:41:31.95 on this original mission trip with him, 00:41:31.99\00:41:34.66 that were separated in the shipwreck. 00:41:34.69\00:41:36.39 They had ended up landing on another island and after some 00:41:36.42\00:41:38.99 successful work there now 00:41:39.03\00:41:40.36 they're going to outlying islands. 00:41:40.40\00:41:42.26 They come to this island, 00:41:42.30\00:41:44.07 and they've got a translator with them. 00:41:44.10\00:41:46.10 And they assemble the villagers, and the villagers all eagerly 00:41:46.13\00:41:48.80 come down to the shore, and they say, 00:41:48.84\00:41:50.14 "We're going to teach you about the true God." 00:41:50.17\00:41:53.48 And they've got these picture scrolls. 00:41:53.51\00:41:55.88 They've got two or three pictures that they use to try 00:41:55.91\00:41:59.31 to teach about Jesus and the plan of salvation 00:41:59.35\00:42:01.95 with the translator. 00:42:01.98\00:42:03.28 Well, it so happens their friend, 00:42:03.32\00:42:04.65 he's in another village on the other side of the island. 00:42:04.69\00:42:07.39 They don't know that he's there. 00:42:07.42\00:42:09.36 He doesn't know that they're on the same island. 00:42:09.39\00:42:12.79 Well, as they begin to teach about Jesus, 00:42:12.83\00:42:15.30 they finally come to the picture that shows the cross. 00:42:15.33\00:42:18.60 And they're all listening. 00:42:18.63\00:42:19.93 They're going, "Yes, yes, yes," in their native tongue, 00:42:19.97\00:42:22.50 and they seem very interested as they sit with their legs crossed 00:42:22.54\00:42:25.37 on the shore, and they're looking entranced. 00:42:25.41\00:42:28.78 And then, they say, "And Jesus died." 00:42:28.81\00:42:33.98 And these men become very disturbed. 00:42:34.02\00:42:36.28 "And they put Him in a grave." 00:42:36.32\00:42:38.92 And they got really upset, and they began to jabber and chant. 00:42:38.95\00:42:42.32 And the translator says, "They seem very upset. 00:42:42.36\00:42:45.03 They say you're liars." 00:42:45.06\00:42:46.39 And they say, "Well, why do they say that we're liars?" 00:42:46.43\00:42:47.86 They say, "He's not dead. 00:42:47.86\00:42:49.86 He's on the other side of the island." 00:42:49.90\00:42:52.67 Their friend had been living so much like Jesus among them, 00:42:52.70\00:42:55.54 that when the other missionaries came and began to talk to them 00:42:55.57\00:42:58.27 about Jesus, they immediately said, 00:42:58.31\00:42:59.71 "Oh, we know who that is. 00:42:59.74\00:43:01.68 This is our friend, this missionary that has been living 00:43:01.71\00:43:05.78 among us, who's been healing and teaching and loving us." 00:43:05.81\00:43:09.48 He had lived like Christ so much 00:43:09.52\00:43:11.92 that they mistook him for Christ. 00:43:11.95\00:43:13.99 That's what we're supposed to do, 00:43:14.02\00:43:15.32 is as Jesus came to reflect the Father-- 00:43:15.36\00:43:17.93 He says, "As the Father sent Me, so send I you." 00:43:17.96\00:43:21.80 We are to go, then, and we are to reflect God. 00:43:21.83\00:43:24.53 Doug: Yeah, right, here's a question from social media. 00:43:24.57\00:43:26.80 They're asking, "Can we have the same relationship 00:43:26.84\00:43:29.74 with the Father that Jesus had?" 00:43:29.77\00:43:32.27 Well, to say it would be identical would be probably 00:43:32.31\00:43:34.84 presumptuous, but through the Spirit, 00:43:34.88\00:43:37.98 in the same way that we're connected with Christ or Christ 00:43:38.01\00:43:41.08 is connected with the Father, we can be connected with Jesus. 00:43:41.12\00:43:44.59 And Jesus actually says there in John 17, 00:43:44.62\00:43:47.69 "As I am in the Father and the Father is in Me," 00:43:47.72\00:43:49.92 so we are to be in Christ. 00:43:49.96\00:43:52.53 He wants us to have that Spirit-filled experience. 00:43:52.56\00:43:56.30 And isn't that your longing? 00:43:56.33\00:43:57.57 I mean, the greatest longing of my life is to have Christ in me, 00:43:57.60\00:44:01.64 the hope of glory, amen? 00:44:01.67\00:44:03.64 That's what we're all yearning for and longing for. 00:44:03.67\00:44:06.44 Well, I've got a little left and a little time. 00:44:06.47\00:44:08.81 It says, "Jesus is the master teacher and reconciliation." 00:44:08.84\00:44:13.05 Colossians 1:19 through verse 22, 00:44:13.08\00:44:16.55 "For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should 00:44:16.58\00:44:21.26 dwell, and that by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, 00:44:21.29\00:44:27.30 by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, 00:44:27.36\00:44:29.86 having made peace through the blood of His cross. 00:44:29.90\00:44:33.13 And you, who were once alienated and enemies in your mind 00:44:33.17\00:44:36.50 by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled--" 00:44:36.54\00:44:39.51 in spite of how wicked we might have been, He can reconcile us-- 00:44:39.54\00:44:42.84 "in the body of His flesh through His death, 00:44:42.88\00:44:45.45 to present you holy, and blameless, 00:44:45.48\00:44:48.38 and above reproach in His sight." 00:44:48.42\00:44:51.15 Yeah, He can make us one with Him in reconciliation. 00:44:51.19\00:44:55.02 And then, if you look in 2 Corinthians 5:16, 00:44:55.06\00:44:57.76 "Therefore, from now on, we regard no one 00:44:57.79\00:45:00.26 according to the flesh. 00:45:00.30\00:45:01.73 Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, 00:45:01.76\00:45:04.47 and yet now we know Him thus no longer. 00:45:04.50\00:45:08.47 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, 00:45:08.50\00:45:10.37 he's a new creation; old things have passed away; 00:45:10.41\00:45:13.44 behold, all things have become new. 00:45:13.48\00:45:15.94 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself 00:45:15.98\00:45:19.91 through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of 00:45:19.95\00:45:22.88 reconciliation, that is, God was in Christ reconciling the world 00:45:22.92\00:45:27.19 to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, 00:45:27.22\00:45:30.46 and He's committed to us a word of reconciliation." 00:45:30.49\00:45:33.46 So, reconciling means, you know, if people are separated. 00:45:33.50\00:45:37.50 A pastor, if he's doing marriage counseling, 00:45:37.53\00:45:39.30 tries to bring reconciliation. 00:45:39.33\00:45:41.67 We were separated from God by our sin. 00:45:41.70\00:45:43.84 Christ came to reconcile us to the Father. 00:45:43.87\00:45:46.68 We, as priests of God, are to be reconciling the world to Christ. 00:45:46.71\00:45:51.91 We do similar work. 00:45:51.95\00:45:53.31 Doug: Question from social media. 00:45:53.35\00:45:55.18 "Is Jesus still teaching us now through the Holy Spirit?" 00:45:55.22\00:45:59.12 Yeah, Christ said, "It's expedient for you that I go 00:45:59.15\00:46:01.86 away, that the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, 00:46:01.89\00:46:04.79 might come, and He will lead you into all truth," 00:46:04.83\00:46:08.30 so it is--the Holy Spirit, of course, is glorifying Christ. 00:46:08.33\00:46:12.27 It says, "He, the Spirit, will bring to your remembrance all 00:46:12.30\00:46:15.80 things that I've said." 00:46:15.84\00:46:17.44 And, of course, some of the last words of Jesus is, 00:46:17.47\00:46:19.57 "I will be with you always, even unto the end." 00:46:19.61\00:46:23.28 Well, then, we go to the last section. 00:46:23.31\00:46:24.88 It talks about the Master's-Teacher's first pupils, 00:46:24.91\00:46:28.62 and then here we read about 00:46:28.65\00:46:30.22 the wonderful story of the shepherds who came. 00:46:30.25\00:46:33.46 Now, Christ is--you know, you kind of have to push the idea 00:46:33.49\00:46:37.13 that He personally is teaching, but when He first came into 00:46:37.16\00:46:40.66 the world during the incarnation, people were taught 00:46:40.70\00:46:43.80 by what they saw of Jesus, 00:46:43.83\00:46:46.07 not so much the words He spoke, because he's a child, 00:46:46.10\00:46:48.60 but when He entered the world in that humble state, 00:46:48.64\00:46:52.41 and the angel said to the shepherd, 00:46:52.44\00:46:53.78 "You'll find the babe. 00:46:53.81\00:46:55.38 This is the sign to you: He'll be in a manger." 00:46:55.41\00:46:57.95 Oh, it's a trough for feeding animals. 00:46:57.98\00:47:00.38 It could be wood or it could be stone, 00:47:00.42\00:47:02.68 but I always thought it was interesting that Jesus, 00:47:02.72\00:47:04.89 who is the bread of life, was born in Bethlehem, 00:47:04.92\00:47:09.19 which is the House of Bread, and He came to give us that bread. 00:47:09.22\00:47:14.20 And He's put in a trough that's made for providing bread 00:47:14.20\00:47:17.27 for animals, so it says bread, bread, bread. 00:47:17.30\00:47:20.34 Jesus is the bread of life. 00:47:20.37\00:47:22.87 And then, of course, it's also when He comes to the temple. 00:47:22.90\00:47:27.11 His humility speaks when He was dedicated as a baby, 00:47:27.14\00:47:30.55 the simple, humble way that He came into our world. 00:47:30.58\00:47:33.62 And the wise men came, and they bowed down, 00:47:33.65\00:47:36.22 and they worshiped Him. 00:47:36.25\00:47:37.62 They just worshiped this child king, 00:47:37.65\00:47:39.72 and so He was even teaching by his example when He first 00:47:39.75\00:47:42.59 entered the world as this innocent little infant, 00:47:42.62\00:47:47.13 and He says we must receive the gospel the same way. 00:47:47.13\00:47:49.96 Well, friends, I'm looking at the clock. 00:47:50.00\00:47:51.80 watch "Revelation Now," where I'll be 00:49:20.82\00:49:23.93 explaining the relevance of Bible prophecy for today. 00:49:23.96\00:49:27.76 announcer: Beginning October 23. 00:49:27.83\00:49:29.50 Visit revelationnow.com. 00:49:29.53\00:49:31.53 announcer: Amazing facts. 00:49:35.74\00:49:37.17 Changed lives. 00:49:37.21\00:49:39.84 Charlie Green: My life was in turmoil. 00:49:43.68\00:49:45.95 My wife and I were fighting all the time. 00:49:45.98\00:49:48.12 I got away from everything and everybody. 00:49:48.15\00:49:50.75 I don't know. 00:49:50.79\00:49:52.12 I just always had this emptiness in my heart I wanted filled. 00:49:52.15\00:49:55.52 I just felt like I went my whole life, 00:49:55.56\00:49:57.43 you know, just searching for something. 00:49:57.46\00:49:59.39 And when my father died and that ruined me a lot. 00:49:59.43\00:50:03.50 My father didn't believe in suicide, 00:50:03.53\00:50:05.23 and I didn't want to live, but rather than disrespect him 00:50:05.27\00:50:09.47 I decided I would just become so mean and someone else would do 00:50:09.50\00:50:12.17 it to me and I wouldn't have to, so I joined the army thinking, 00:50:12.21\00:50:15.48 "What better place to get killed than in the army?" 00:50:15.51\00:50:17.91 And while I was in the army, my daughter got injured. 00:50:17.95\00:50:20.62 She was in an accident, and she was blind and paraplegic, 00:50:20.65\00:50:26.52 and it's just like I felt the whole world 00:50:26.55\00:50:29.09 was coming down on me. 00:50:29.12\00:50:30.46 And one morning, I just really got mad, 00:50:30.49\00:50:33.09 and I gave God a cussing like you wouldn't believe. 00:50:33.13\00:50:36.00 I said, "I'm not Moses. I'm not Abraham, you know? 00:50:36.03\00:50:39.13 I don't--but I put my sandals on just like they do, 00:50:39.17\00:50:42.87 and I'm a man. 00:50:42.90\00:50:44.24 I don't want to know why this is happening to me. 00:50:44.27\00:50:46.11 I just want to know it's happening for a reason. 00:50:46.14\00:50:48.94 If You tell me right now that this is all for a reason, 00:50:48.98\00:50:51.88 then You can stack it on me from here to the end of time, 00:50:51.91\00:50:55.72 and I will never complain again." 00:50:55.75\00:50:59.09 And that little TV came on. 00:50:59.12\00:51:01.66 It'd been sitting there just static all night long, 00:51:01.69\00:51:04.76 and there was this minister. 00:51:04.79\00:51:06.13 He pops up and says, "Today's lesson is from the book of Job. 00:51:06.16\00:51:09.60 God only lets those suffer that He loves the most." 00:51:09.63\00:51:12.87 And I said, "Well, that's all you got to say, Lord. 00:51:12.90\00:51:14.37 I appreciate it greatly" 00:51:14.40\00:51:15.74 From that day forward, I knew that He was there, 00:51:15.77\00:51:18.21 and He was in my life and that He would help me. 00:51:18.24\00:51:22.28 I went to prison just almost immediately after that. 00:51:22.31\00:51:26.21 I was in prison for aggravated assault. 00:51:26.25\00:51:28.38 I was in one of the worst prisons 00:51:28.42\00:51:30.45 in the state of Tennessee. 00:51:30.49\00:51:31.82 It was full of gang activity. I got my throat cut, 00:51:31.85\00:51:35.42 52 stitches in my neck. 00:51:35.46\00:51:38.06 I could take these fingers and stick them all 00:51:38.09\00:51:39.53 the way throughout my mouth. 00:51:39.56\00:51:41.20 I'd gone to the library that day because it was really about 00:51:41.23\00:51:44.60 the only thing to do, but I ran across this little book called 00:51:44.63\00:51:48.07 "The Richest Caveman." 00:51:48.10\00:51:49.44 This book is hilarious, but it is great. 00:51:49.47\00:51:53.41 I'm sitting here with this big beard. 00:51:53.44\00:51:54.84 I'm thinking, "Hey, I know what it's like 00:51:54.88\00:51:56.21 to look like a caveman, but." 00:51:56.24\00:51:58.21 [laughing] 00:51:58.25\00:51:59.68 I'm not an educated person, I guess you'd say, 00:51:59.71\00:52:01.38 but I'm a simple guy. 00:52:01.42\00:52:03.05 I'm just really a simple guy. 00:52:03.08\00:52:04.65 That's what I loved about Doug Batchelor, 00:52:04.69\00:52:06.96 because this guy is just straight out as you can get. 00:52:06.99\00:52:11.86 And my wife now, we've kept contact through all these years, 00:52:11.89\00:52:15.86 and so much has gone on, and I told her, 00:52:15.90\00:52:20.87 I said, "Listen now, this is the center of my world right now." 00:52:20.90\00:52:25.97 And I said, "I really want you to be involved in it with me. 00:52:26.01\00:52:29.18 I need it." 00:52:29.21\00:52:30.55 And I said, "And you will, too, 00:52:30.58\00:52:31.91 if you ever just take hold of it." 00:52:31.95\00:52:33.25 I told my wife, I said, "Listen, I've got this Amazing Facts 00:52:33.28\00:52:36.18 Bible study going here, and this is the best way for you 00:52:36.22\00:52:40.49 to get this information." 00:52:40.52\00:52:41.86 And I think I said, "Because it's broken down, 00:52:41.89\00:52:45.03 and they give you questions and--to make you look 00:52:45.06\00:52:51.53 for these things, you know? 00:52:51.57\00:52:52.93 So, it's not anyone telling you. 00:52:52.97\00:52:54.90 You find it on your own, and they teach you 00:52:54.94\00:52:57.17 to actually use the Bible." 00:52:57.21\00:52:58.94 She was there faithfully every Wednesday, 00:52:58.97\00:53:01.98 until we decided, you know, she wanted to be baptized also. 00:53:02.01\00:53:06.98 She saw it coming around. The choice was made. 00:53:07.02\00:53:11.12 On October 4, 2014, my wife and I were baptized in the water, 00:53:11.15\00:53:16.22 at the same time, and we started our walk together, 00:53:16.26\00:53:22.10 I guess you'd say. 00:53:22.13\00:53:23.53 I went through everything that a man could possibly go through, 00:53:23.57\00:53:26.77 I guess, from marital trouble, 00:53:26.80\00:53:31.17 loss of family members, death in my family. 00:53:31.21\00:53:34.31 My children were harmed, 00:53:34.34\00:53:35.64 and my daughter was handicapped for life. 00:53:35.68\00:53:39.28 I went to prison, but still I kept my word to God that He 00:53:39.31\00:53:44.92 could stack it on me as much as He wanted 00:53:44.95\00:53:47.66 and I'd never question Him again. 00:53:47.69\00:53:49.12 And I didn't, but I could say this much: He never put nothing 00:53:49.16\00:53:54.36 on me that I couldn't handle, 00:53:54.36\00:53:56.73 and He walked with me through it all. 00:53:56.77\00:53:59.03 And I'd like to say that-- to anyone who 00:53:59.07\00:54:01.07 is in prison not to give up. 00:54:01.10\00:54:05.84 Don't lose hope. 00:54:05.87\00:54:07.31 Put your faith in the Lord and study and seek Him, 00:54:07.34\00:54:11.48 and He will seek you. 00:54:11.51\00:54:13.01 And my name is Charlie Green, and I want you to know 00:54:13.05\00:54:15.58 that you and Amazing Facts have changed my life. 00:54:15.62\00:54:19.45 い 00:54:19.75\00:54:28.70 い 00:54:28.73\00:54:30.80 い 00:54:31.03\00:54:36.07 い 00:54:36.10\00:54:41.74 Doug: What can be more irresistible than a kitten? 00:54:41.78\00:54:44.11 These guys might look cute now, but some of their ancestors 00:54:44.15\00:54:47.18 have grown into man eaters. 00:54:47.22\00:54:49.22 [roaring] 00:54:49.25\00:54:53.36 We're here in a lion park in South Africa now where 00:54:53.39\00:54:55.89 we can view these creatures in relative safety, 00:54:55.92\00:54:58.43 but there's a reason they're known as the king of beasts. 00:54:58.46\00:55:02.00 So, what is it that people find 00:55:02.03\00:55:03.33 so enchanting and frightening about lions? 00:55:03.37\00:55:05.63 Is it their speed, their claws, their sharp teeth, 00:55:05.67\00:55:09.04 or all of the above? 00:55:09.07\00:55:10.64 Might also be some of the stories about man-eating lions. 00:55:10.67\00:55:13.91 Like in 1898, right here in Africa, 00:55:13.94\00:55:16.75 they were building a bridge over the Tsavo River in Kenya, 00:55:16.78\00:55:20.25 and two brother lions terrorized 00:55:20.28\00:55:22.45 the construction process, eating 135 workers. 00:55:22.48\00:55:28.06 Did you know lions are mentioned in the Bible over 100 times, 00:55:28.09\00:55:31.69 and you can find them all the way 00:55:31.73\00:55:33.13 from Genesis to Revelation? 00:55:33.16\00:55:35.13 It's usually in reference to their ferocity 00:55:35.16\00:55:37.27 and how dangerous they are. 00:55:37.30\00:55:39.00 Of course, Samson killed a lion with his bare hands. 00:55:39.03\00:55:41.94 David killed a lion. 00:55:41.97\00:55:43.27 There are man-eating lions in the Bible. 00:55:43.30\00:55:45.34 The way that they punished criminals was by throwing 00:55:45.37\00:55:47.88 them in the lions' den, and early Christians were even 00:55:47.91\00:55:50.81 fed to lions, but, amazingly, as the Bible mentions, 00:55:50.85\00:55:54.55 not all lions are to be feared. 00:55:54.58\00:55:56.65 There have been a few friendly lions in history. 00:55:56.69\00:55:59.45 For example, in the 1950s, a couple, 00:55:59.49\00:56:02.99 George and Margaret Westbeau, who lived up at a ranch near 00:56:03.02\00:56:06.39 Seattle, Washington, adopted an abandoned lion cub. 00:56:06.43\00:56:10.57 They named it Little Tyke because they felt sorry for it, 00:56:10.60\00:56:13.50 but they discovered as they tried to feed her 00:56:13.54\00:56:16.07 she refused to eat any meat at all. 00:56:16.10\00:56:19.24 They were concerned, thinking there was no hope 00:56:19.27\00:56:21.08 for this little lioness to survive, and everybody told them 00:56:21.11\00:56:23.88 the same, because we know in the wild lions survive 00:56:23.91\00:56:26.98 on almost an entirely meat diet. 00:56:27.02\00:56:29.82 Then someone showed the Westbeaus that verse 00:56:29.85\00:56:31.95 in the Bible that talks about in heaven the animals 00:56:31.99\00:56:35.09 are vegetarians, and the lion will eat straw like the ox. 00:56:35.12\00:56:39.59 That encouraged them, and so they began to feed 00:56:39.63\00:56:42.06 Little Tyke a purely vegetarian diet. 00:56:42.10\00:56:45.20 Not only did she survive, she thrived, 00:56:45.23\00:56:48.04 growing into a lion that was over 352 pounds 00:56:48.07\00:56:51.64 and over 10 feet long. 00:56:51.67\00:56:54.01 In fact, zoologists that examined Little Tyke when 00:56:54.04\00:56:56.41 she was full-grown said they have never seen such 00:56:56.44\00:56:58.91 a perfect specimen of a lioness in their life, 00:56:58.95\00:57:02.58 a pure vegetarian. 00:57:02.62\00:57:04.59 You know, when we hear incredible stories about that, 00:57:04.62\00:57:06.79 of Little Tyke, it reminds us that God's original plan 00:57:06.82\00:57:10.26 was to make a world of total peace. 00:57:10.29\00:57:12.86 He describes it here in the Bible 00:57:12.89\00:57:14.30 in Isaiah chapter 11, verse 6. 00:57:14.36\00:57:16.56 "The wolf also will dwell with the lamb, 00:57:16.60\00:57:19.10 the leopard will lie down with the young goat, 00:57:19.13\00:57:21.44 the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; 00:57:21.47\00:57:24.14 and a little child will lead them." 00:57:24.17\00:57:26.57 Nothing is going to hurt and destroy in the new heavens 00:57:26.61\00:57:29.21 and the new earth that God is going to create. 00:57:29.24\00:57:31.38 Wouldn't you like to live in a kingdom where there's perfect 00:57:31.41\00:57:33.55 peace, where there's no more death or killing or pain? 00:57:33.58\00:57:37.49 God says that He wants you in that kingdom. 00:57:37.52\00:57:40.09 The Lamb of God made it possible for you to have 00:57:40.12\00:57:43.19 an encounter with the Lion of the tribe of Judah. 00:57:43.22\00:57:46.26 Wouldn't you like to meet Him today?
