¤¤¤ 00:00:01.46\00:00:10.21 Doug Batchelor: Hello, to our friends who are listening 00:00:36.73\00:00:39.67 and watching from around the world in all different parts of 00:00:39.70\00:00:43.37 the country. 00:00:43.41\00:00:44.97 We're very thankful that you've tuned in for our "Sabbath School 00:00:45.01\00:00:47.38 Study Hour" this morning, and we have a very important lesson. 00:00:47.41\00:00:50.41 It is the last lesson in this quarter study on the Scriptures 00:00:50.45\00:00:53.62 and--but before we get to that, we want to tell you that we do 00:00:53.65\00:00:57.82 have a free offer, and the free offer is--because today's lesson 00:00:57.85\00:01:02.76 is talking about walking in the Word and not just reading it, 00:01:02.79\00:01:06.13 but obeying it, we're going to talk about obedience. 00:01:06.16\00:01:09.20 We have a free offer, and you will really be blessed by this, 00:01:09.23\00:01:11.33 and not only should you read this, you may want to order this 00:01:11.37\00:01:14.24 because there's a lot of Christians out there that think 00:01:14.27\00:01:16.44 that obedience is legalism, and this will answer that question, 00:01:16.47\00:01:19.47 and that's the title: "Is Obedience Legalism?" 00:01:19.51\00:01:23.24 And it is a beautifully illustrated study guide. 00:01:23.28\00:01:26.18 It's got colored pages. 00:01:26.21\00:01:27.82 It's easy to read. 00:01:27.85\00:01:29.48 You want a free copy of this? 00:01:29.52\00:01:31.12 You can call the number, 866-788-3966, or that's 00:01:31.15\00:01:36.76 866-Study-More, and another way you can get it is you can 00:01:36.79\00:01:41.20 actually look at it online, and so, if you want to download it 00:01:41.23\00:01:44.13 and read it that way, then simply text 40544, and what you 00:01:44.17\00:01:49.34 text is "SH041." 00:01:49.37\00:01:52.74 And so text "SH041" to 40544, and then you can read it right 00:01:52.77\00:01:59.68 there online. 00:01:59.71\00:02:02.18 Of course, this is only for North America and U.S. 00:02:02.22\00:02:04.69 territories if you're calling, but we want you to take 00:02:04.72\00:02:07.26 advantage of that. 00:02:07.29\00:02:09.42 Something else I think I should mention is, because this is our 00:02:09.46\00:02:10.79 last study in our quarter on Scripture, that means we're 00:02:10.83\00:02:14.73 getting ready to go into a new study, and so I'm really looking 00:02:14.73\00:02:17.43 forward to this. 00:02:17.47\00:02:18.83 We're going to be talking about "Making Friends for God: The Joy 00:02:18.87\00:02:22.14 of Sharing in His Mission." 00:02:22.17\00:02:24.44 You know, these studies are incredible that we've been doing 00:02:24.47\00:02:28.24 this quarter. 00:02:28.28\00:02:30.01 There's three secrets to victory in the Christian life. 00:02:30.05\00:02:33.85 Prayer--we've been studying prayer in recent 00:02:33.88\00:02:37.32 quarterlies--reading the Bible, and sharing your faith. 00:02:37.35\00:02:41.92 You know, there are three pieces of furniture that were in the 00:02:41.96\00:02:45.09 holy place of the sanctuary. 00:02:45.13\00:02:47.03 There was the bread: That's the Bible. 00:02:47.03\00:02:49.13 There was the light: That is the witnessing, sharing your faith. 00:02:49.16\00:02:52.93 There's the altar of incense: That's a symbol for prayer. 00:02:52.97\00:02:56.10 Those are the secret weapons to living a vital, victorious 00:02:56.14\00:02:59.87 Christian life. 00:02:59.91\00:03:02.34 So take advantage of the free offer. 00:03:02.38\00:03:05.08 You'll want to talk to your local church and find out how 00:03:05.11\00:03:08.52 you can get the Sabbath School quarterly. 00:03:08.55\00:03:10.75 I know a lot of people right now are still not meeting in person. 00:03:10.79\00:03:13.62 A lot of churches are beginning to phase into in-person 00:03:13.66\00:03:16.26 meetings, and some of the cities, not quite yet. 00:03:16.29\00:03:19.73 And so you can get this online. 00:03:19.76\00:03:21.96 And so you can go to the Sabbath School website, and you can 00:03:22.00\00:03:26.43 study the lesson online. 00:03:26.47\00:03:28.34 So before we dive into our study for today, we should begin with 00:03:28.37\00:03:31.97 a word of prayer. 00:03:32.01\00:03:35.31 Father in heaven, we just are so thankful for the promise that, 00:03:35.34\00:03:37.71 if we turn to you and we pray for the Holy Spirit, that the 00:03:37.75\00:03:42.08 Holy Spirit will come and give us wisdom and understanding. 00:03:42.12\00:03:45.19 Right now, Lord, as we listen as I teach and speak, we pray the 00:03:45.22\00:03:49.56 Holy Spirit will take charge of this presentation in every 00:03:49.59\00:03:52.66 aspect so that the power of the Word might be seen and felt in 00:03:52.69\00:03:56.30 people's hearts and lives. 00:03:56.33\00:03:58.73 And we thank You. 00:03:58.77\00:04:00.74 We claim this promise and pray in Jesus' name, amen. 00:04:00.77\00:04:04.11 "Living by the Word of God." 00:04:04.14\00:04:06.78 We've been talking about all the different nuances of how to 00:04:06.81\00:04:09.21 study the Word of God, and now we're going to be talking about 00:04:09.24\00:04:11.71 "Living by the Word of God." 00:04:11.75\00:04:13.95 You know, the devil came to Jesus in the wilderness, and he 00:04:13.98\00:04:16.18 said, "If You're the Son of God, turn these stones into bread." 00:04:16.22\00:04:21.32 And Jesus said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread 00:04:21.36\00:04:25.59 alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth 00:04:25.63\00:04:29.30 of God.'" 00:04:29.33\00:04:31.67 The Lord does not want us just to be looking at the Word. 00:04:31.70\00:04:33.67 He wants us to be living by the Word. 00:04:33.70\00:04:36.50 The Word of God is for us to follow, for us to live by, and 00:04:36.54\00:04:41.04 that's what we're going to study today. 00:04:41.08\00:04:43.68 We spent the last 12 lessons talking about a lot of different 00:04:43.71\00:04:46.78 aspects and facets of how to study the Bible and the 00:04:46.82\00:04:50.72 hermeneutics of the Bible and understanding the Bible and 00:04:50.75\00:04:53.32 approaching the Scriptures, and the history of the Scriptures. 00:04:53.36\00:04:56.29 Now we're boiling it all down and talking about the most 00:04:56.32\00:04:59.16 important thing. 00:04:59.19\00:05:01.23 Everything else we've talked about in the past does not 00:05:01.26\00:05:03.43 matter if you don't live by the Word. 00:05:03.47\00:05:06.47 So if you understand how to dissect the Word but you're not 00:05:06.50\00:05:09.20 following the Word, it's all in vain. 00:05:09.24\00:05:11.91 That's why we have this memory verse, and it's from James 1:22, 00:05:11.94\00:05:16.38 "But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving 00:05:16.41\00:05:21.18 your own selves." 00:05:21.22\00:05:23.62 So God wants us to be doers of the Word. 00:05:23.65\00:05:26.45 Now, I've got a lot of Scripture that we're going to be talking 00:05:26.49\00:05:29.16 about today, and so you may want to get some notes out, and I 00:05:29.19\00:05:33.40 want to remind our friends that, when the teachers are up here 00:05:33.43\00:05:37.00 teaching, we often have our own personal notes that we're adding 00:05:37.03\00:05:40.14 to the lesson notes. 00:05:40.17\00:05:42.24 We know that you've already got the study guide. 00:05:42.27\00:05:44.41 Some of you have the teacher's version of the study guide 00:05:44.44\00:05:46.84 and--but then the teachers of these recorded programs also 00:05:46.88\00:05:50.55 have our personal notes, and the folks say, "Where'd you get that 00:05:50.58\00:05:53.42 illustration or that verse? 00:05:53.45\00:05:55.82 I want that to help me with my lesson." 00:05:55.85\00:05:58.09 You can get those online. 00:05:58.12\00:06:00.09 So if you go to the Amazing Facts website under the section 00:06:00.12\00:06:01.82 where it talks about Sabbath School, you can go to 00:06:01.86\00:06:03.96 the bottom. 00:06:03.99\00:06:05.73 It'll say "notes." 00:06:05.76\00:06:07.56 And so we like to make those available as well. 00:06:07.60\00:06:09.86 So, first of all, if you look in 1 John 1, verse 7, it says, "But 00:06:09.90\00:06:12.77 if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship 00:06:12.80\00:06:16.97 one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses 00:06:17.01\00:06:21.18 us from all sin." 00:06:21.21\00:06:23.78 We read in earlier studies, "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and 00:06:23.81\00:06:27.52 a light unto my path." 00:06:27.55\00:06:30.25 That light is not for just looking at. 00:06:30.29\00:06:32.79 It is for walking in. 00:06:32.82\00:06:34.99 Another verse, John 12:35, "Then Jesus said to them, 'A little 00:06:35.02\00:06:39.76 while longer the light is with you. 00:06:39.79\00:06:42.73 Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. 00:06:42.76\00:06:47.27 He who walks in darkness does not know where he's going.'" 00:06:47.30\00:06:51.17 Again, Jesus said, "Walk while you have the light." 00:06:51.21\00:06:53.71 I remember C.D. Brooks used to tell a story, in his 00:06:53.74\00:06:56.18 evangelistic meetings, about two boys that were out playing 00:06:56.21\00:06:59.31 in a park one day, and they were having a great time, and pretty 00:06:59.35\00:07:02.72 soon they got tired, and they laid back on the grass on this 00:07:02.75\00:07:05.72 beautiful sunny day, and one of them started thinking about the 00:07:05.75\00:07:09.02 sun that was above him, how bright it was in his face, and 00:07:09.06\00:07:11.53 he knew it was hard to look into the sun. 00:07:11.56\00:07:14.00 And, you know, boys like--they like to be a little 00:07:14.03\00:07:16.53 competitive sometime. 00:07:16.56\00:07:18.60 So one boy said to his friend--they're both lying back 00:07:18.63\00:07:20.70 on the grass. 00:07:20.74\00:07:22.54 He said, "I'll bet you I can stare at the sun longer 00:07:22.57\00:07:24.14 than you." 00:07:24.17\00:07:26.11 It's like, sometimes kids say, "I think I can hold my breath 00:07:26.14\00:07:27.88 longer than you." 00:07:27.91\00:07:29.84 And his friend said, "I bet you can't." 00:07:29.88\00:07:31.71 And so they said, "All right, well, close your eyes, count to 00:07:31.75\00:07:35.25 three," and they're going to stare right into the middle of 00:07:35.28\00:07:37.62 the sun and see who can do it the longest. 00:07:37.65\00:07:40.56 And they said, "One, two, three," and they opened their 00:07:40.59\00:07:42.82 eyes, and they stared right into the sun, deliberately, not 00:07:42.86\00:07:45.99 realizing that all that radiation was doing damage to 00:07:46.03\00:07:49.50 their iris, and pretty soon they said they can't handle 00:07:49.53\00:07:55.97 it anymore. 00:07:56.00\00:07:57.77 Well, they didn't realize it--what was going on. 00:07:57.81\00:08:00.31 Then later that day, their eyes got red and swollen. 00:08:00.34\00:08:03.04 They woke up the next morning. 00:08:03.08\00:08:05.15 They were just aching, and they had headaches, and their eyes 00:08:05.18\00:08:07.28 were just about swollen shut. 00:08:07.32\00:08:09.65 Parents took the boys to the doctor, and the doctor looked at 00:08:09.68\00:08:12.12 them, and they told the doctor what they had done. 00:08:12.15\00:08:14.32 He put some ointment on their eyes, and he wrapped them up and 00:08:14.36\00:08:17.29 said, "Keep the bandages on for a few days." 00:08:17.33\00:08:20.03 And by a miracle of God's grace, after a few days, he took off 00:08:20.06\00:08:23.67 the bandages. 00:08:23.70\00:08:25.47 The swelling had gone down. 00:08:25.50\00:08:27.10 The redness had gone away, and they could still see. 00:08:27.14\00:08:29.20 They were young enough where they were healing. 00:08:29.24\00:08:31.21 And then the doctor sat them down. 00:08:31.24\00:08:33.01 He told him a very important lesson. 00:08:33.04\00:08:34.91 He said, "Boys never forget: The light is not for looking at. 00:08:34.94\00:08:36.95 It is for walking in." 00:08:36.98\00:08:39.28 A lot of people come to church, and they like to hear the 00:08:39.31\00:08:42.25 sermon, and they like to look at the light, and they like to 00:08:42.28\00:08:45.85 dissect and argue about theology, but they don't ever 00:08:45.89\00:08:49.42 walk in the light. 00:08:49.46\00:08:51.73 All of the light in the world, if you understand, you know, 00:08:51.76\00:08:55.53 everything in the Bible, if you've got a library full of 00:08:55.56\00:08:57.77 Bibles, if you've got all kinds of theological books, but sin is 00:08:57.80\00:09:01.10 still controlling your life, it's of no avail. 00:09:01.14\00:09:04.34 God doesn't want us to look at the light. 00:09:04.37\00:09:06.61 He wants us to walk in the light. 00:09:06.64\00:09:08.84 And the Bible says, if you walk in the light as He is in the 00:09:08.88\00:09:12.51 light, the blood of His Son cleanses us from all sin. 00:09:12.55\00:09:17.49 And so--and that's the first one we read. 00:09:17.52\00:09:20.06 The blood of Jesus Christ, 1 John 1:7, "His Son cleanses us 00:09:20.09\00:09:24.19 from all sin." 00:09:24.23\00:09:26.06 Also, 2 Peter 1, verse 19, "And so we have this prophetic word 00:09:26.09\00:09:31.70 confirmed, which you do well to heed--" 00:09:31.73\00:09:35.47 "Heed" means "to follow," "to listen to," "as a light that 00:09:35.50\00:09:39.41 shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning 00:09:39.44\00:09:43.61 star rises in your heart." 00:09:43.65\00:09:46.65 You know, one of the other things about light is, if you 00:09:46.68\00:09:48.78 are walking in the light, God increases the light. 00:09:48.82\00:09:53.52 You know, just this last week, I was hiking with my son, up in 00:09:53.56\00:10:00.63 the mountains, and we were actually hiking at night, and it 00:10:00.66\00:10:04.50 was really nice when the moon came up. 00:10:04.53\00:10:08.27 You know, as the sun was going down, things just kept getting 00:10:08.30\00:10:11.54 darker and darker, but we weren't at our destination yet, 00:10:11.57\00:10:14.88 so we kept hiking, but, fortunately, after the sun went 00:10:14.91\00:10:18.01 down, soon the moon rose--and it was almost a full moon-over the 00:10:18.05\00:10:21.88 ridge, and as it got higher, it got brighter and brighter, and 00:10:21.92\00:10:25.09 it was so nice that your eyes tend to adjust. 00:10:25.12\00:10:29.22 And pretty soon, we could see even in the dark. 00:10:29.26\00:10:32.09 Never had to actually pull out our flashlights, walking in 00:10:32.13\00:10:34.63 the moonlight. 00:10:34.66\00:10:36.46 Well, when you walk in the light that God gives you, it 00:10:36.50\00:10:38.67 gets brighter. 00:10:38.70\00:10:40.87 Now, some people, they've had light revealed to them, and they 00:10:40.90\00:10:43.74 never step out in faith to walk in the light, and then the light 00:10:43.77\00:10:47.34 goes out. 00:10:47.38\00:10:49.31 If we are not walking in the light that God gives us, pretty 00:10:49.34\00:10:53.15 soon we might not believe the light. 00:10:53.18\00:10:55.35 We may not see the light or understand the light anymore. 00:10:55.38\00:10:58.09 The best time to do God's will is when He reveals His will 00:10:58.12\00:11:02.19 to you. 00:11:02.22\00:11:03.89 I've seen this happen. 00:11:03.93\00:11:05.63 Let me explain it a little more clearly. 00:11:05.66\00:11:07.40 I've seen this happen in so many evangelistic meetings: A person 00:11:07.46\00:11:09.33 is coming. 00:11:09.36\00:11:11.23 They're hearing the Bible truths for the first time, and they're 00:11:11.27\00:11:13.60 thinking, "Wow, I never understood this before. 00:11:13.64\00:11:15.87 This is amazing." 00:11:15.90\00:11:17.67 And their lives are being changed, and they're feeling 00:11:17.71\00:11:20.28 great joy of knowing the truth, but then there's some conviction 00:11:20.31\00:11:22.74 about the sin in their life, and they realize that they need to 00:11:22.78\00:11:25.58 make some changes, and they keep coming, and finally, you 00:11:25.61\00:11:28.75 know--and often they're making changes, but then sometimes a 00:11:28.78\00:11:31.89 certain truth is presented, and they'll say, "Whoa, I'm not 00:11:31.92\00:11:35.66 doing that. 00:11:35.69\00:11:38.09 That's some pet sin in my life. 00:11:38.13\00:11:39.93 That's precious to me. 00:11:39.96\00:11:41.50 No way in the world am I ever changing that." 00:11:41.53\00:11:43.73 And the enthusiasm and the joy and the excitement they had 00:11:43.77\00:11:47.50 about learning the truth, you watch the lights start to fade 00:11:47.54\00:11:50.57 from their eyes. 00:11:50.61\00:11:52.81 And I've gone to visit people before, and they say, "You know, 00:11:52.84\00:11:55.38 Pastor, like, I don't understand. 00:11:55.41\00:11:57.15 When I first came to these meetings, I was so excited, and 00:11:57.18\00:11:59.11 I heard God's voice, and He was leading me and speaking to me, 00:11:59.15\00:12:01.42 and all these changes, and now it seems like it stopped." 00:12:01.45\00:12:04.25 And I'd say, well, brother, sister, did something come up 00:12:04.29\00:12:07.22 that you stopped listening to? 00:12:07.26\00:12:10.63 Was there some point of truth that you just said, "I'm not 00:12:10.66\00:12:12.79 going to accept that"? 00:12:12.83\00:12:14.76 Said, "Well, yeah, you know, when the evangelist talked about 00:12:14.83\00:12:16.73 this or that, I said, 'No, I could never do that.'" 00:12:16.77\00:12:19.23 I said, "Well, when you stop walking in the light, then the 00:12:19.27\00:12:23.41 light starts to get dim." 00:12:23.44\00:12:25.87 You've got to keep doing what the Bible says, which is a very 00:12:25.91\00:12:28.61 important point we're going to get to now, dealing with the 00:12:28.64\00:12:32.81 subject of living the Word of God in the Holy Spirit. 00:12:32.85\00:12:37.19 What does it mean to live out the Word of God in the 00:12:37.22\00:12:39.42 Holy Spirit? 00:12:39.45\00:12:41.16 John 14:26, "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father 00:12:41.19\00:12:45.89 will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring 00:12:45.93\00:12:49.93 to your remembrance all things that I have said to you." 00:12:49.96\00:12:53.94 Ho, I've got so much I could say about this. 00:12:53.97\00:12:55.70 You know, I used to go to a charismatic church before I was 00:12:55.74\00:12:59.67 a Seventh-Day Adventist Christian. 00:12:59.71\00:13:03.41 A lot of dear Christian people, lovely people, but they made a 00:13:03.45\00:13:06.35 big issue of speaking in tongues, and they would tell me, 00:13:06.38\00:13:12.05 "Doug, you've got to learn how to speak in tongues, and if you 00:13:12.09\00:13:14.36 don't speak in tongues, you don't have the Holy Spirit." 00:13:14.39\00:13:16.59 Of course, you know, I didn't know everything I know now, but 00:13:16.62\00:13:18.89 I, just, I didn't think that was right. 00:13:18.93\00:13:20.90 I said, "I don't see what you're talking about in the Bible." 00:13:20.93\00:13:23.70 And--but at the same time, I was learning the Sabbath truth, and 00:13:23.73\00:13:27.74 so I'd go to my charismatic pastor and say, "What about the 00:13:27.77\00:13:30.14 Ten Commandments?" 00:13:30.17\00:13:32.57 And they'd say, "Well, we're not under the law now. 00:13:32.61\00:13:34.38 We're under grace." 00:13:34.41\00:13:36.54 I'd say, "Well, but it says here," this and this and this, 00:13:36.58\00:13:39.88 and I'd show them all the Scriptures that say, you know, 00:13:39.91\00:13:42.18 "God's law doesn't pass away. 00:13:42.22\00:13:44.15 It's for eternal," and they'd say, "Well, I know that that's 00:13:44.19\00:13:46.76 what the Bible says, but that's the letter. 00:13:46.79\00:13:48.82 We're not being led by the letter of the law. 00:13:48.86\00:13:51.93 We're being led by the Spirit." 00:13:51.96\00:13:54.23 And they almost made it sound like that, if they felt in their 00:13:54.30\00:13:56.30 heart the Holy Spirit was telling them something different 00:13:56.33\00:13:58.77 than the Bible said, that that was the--that this feeling of 00:13:58.80\00:14:02.27 the Spirit in their heart was to trump, the very plain reading of 00:14:02.30\00:14:06.41 the Word. 00:14:06.44\00:14:08.91 And Jesus said, "No, no, the Holy Spirit is going to bring to 00:14:08.94\00:14:11.28 your remembrance what I have said." 00:14:11.31\00:14:14.25 And so the purpose of the Holy Spirit is not to ever say 00:14:14.28\00:14:16.65 something different from what Jesus said. 00:14:16.69\00:14:19.29 The Holy Spirit is going to accentuate and highlight and 00:14:19.32\00:14:21.86 help you remember what Jesus said. 00:14:21.89\00:14:25.03 And in the same way, there's been so many times that I'm 00:14:25.06\00:14:28.30 either preaching a sermon, or we were answering questions on the 00:14:28.33\00:14:32.57 radio--you know, when we do the "Bible Answers Live" program, we 00:14:32.60\00:14:35.27 don't know ahead of time what questions are coming in. 00:14:35.30\00:14:38.34 I mean, people, they take the--we have volunteers that 00:14:38.37\00:14:41.34 take the calls, and they'll put a little note in there and say, 00:14:41.38\00:14:43.95 "There's a question on baptism," or the Trinity, so we only know 00:14:43.98\00:14:46.51 a moment or two ahead this is what this person is going 00:14:46.55\00:14:48.85 to ask. 00:14:48.88\00:14:50.69 We haven't had time to look it up, so right when we take their 00:14:50.72\00:14:52.75 call, we're saying, "Lord, help us remember where these 00:14:52.79\00:14:55.02 Scriptures are." 00:14:55.06\00:14:57.03 And some of them are pretty tough questions, and we pray, 00:14:57.06\00:14:59.86 "Lord bring to our remembrance what we've studied." 00:14:59.89\00:15:03.77 And so many times the Lord answers that prayer. 00:15:03.80\00:15:07.37 Most of the time he answers that prayer. 00:15:07.40\00:15:09.87 Now, what God does not do, the Holy Spirit does not bring to 00:15:09.90\00:15:13.17 your remembrance what you've never read, and so, if you want 00:15:13.21\00:15:17.18 to have the Holy Spirit bring to your remembrance the Word of 00:15:17.21\00:15:19.78 Jesus, you need to first read the Word of Jesus. 00:15:19.81\00:15:23.15 So it's a good idea, every Christian ought to, over the 00:15:23.18\00:15:26.86 course of every year, every two years, read through the Bible 00:15:26.89\00:15:29.99 all the way through, even the parts where you say, "Well, 00:15:30.03\00:15:33.03 it's just--" 00:15:33.06\00:15:34.73 going through the measurements of the sanctuary, or they're 00:15:34.76\00:15:36.60 going through a genealogy, let your eyes at least scan over it. 00:15:36.63\00:15:39.10 It's going to get easier. 00:15:39.13\00:15:40.70 You'll understand more, and you make it possible then for God to 00:15:40.74\00:15:43.10 honor that promise to bring it to your remembrance. 00:15:43.14\00:15:45.47 So the Holy Spirit will help you in your understanding of the 00:15:45.51\00:15:49.14 Word and in remembering the Word. 00:15:49.18\00:15:52.01 John 16:13, "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, 00:15:52.05\00:15:57.52 He will guide you into all truth, for He will not speak on 00:15:57.55\00:16:00.92 His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He 00:16:00.96\00:16:04.83 will tell you of things to come." 00:16:04.86\00:16:06.90 There's another verse that tells us the Holy Spirit is not going 00:16:06.93\00:16:09.30 to tell you something separate from the Word. 00:16:09.33\00:16:11.70 He doesn't speak on His own authority. 00:16:11.73\00:16:13.64 Holy Spirit is going to honor Christ, who is the living Word. 00:16:13.67\00:16:16.44 There's a great quote, and it's in your lesson in Selected 00:16:16.47\00:16:20.38 Messages, Book 1, page 411, "No one is able to explain the 00:16:20.41\00:16:25.48 Scriptures without the aid of the Holy Spirit. 00:16:25.51\00:16:28.58 But when you take up the Word of God with a humble, teachable 00:16:28.62\00:16:31.65 heart, the angels of God will be by your side to impress you with 00:16:31.69\00:16:35.76 evidences of the truth." 00:16:35.79\00:16:38.63 Sometimes the way the Holy Spirit works is through angels 00:16:38.66\00:16:41.33 actually speaking to us. 00:16:41.36\00:16:44.00 John 7:17, one of the most important criteria to walk in 00:16:44.03\00:16:48.64 the Word and to understand the Word is be willing to do what 00:16:48.67\00:16:52.37 the Word says. 00:16:52.41\00:16:54.98 "If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning 00:16:55.01\00:16:58.45 the doctrine--" 00:16:58.48\00:17:00.68 that means the teaching-- "whether it is from God or 00:17:00.72\00:17:03.39 whether I speak on My own authority." 00:17:03.42\00:17:06.05 Single most important thing to understand some Bible truth is 00:17:06.09\00:17:08.39 make up your mind and say, "Whatever it says, I'm willing 00:17:08.42\00:17:11.73 to do it. 00:17:11.76\00:17:13.63 I'm willing to do what God is saying in His Word." 00:17:13.66\00:17:15.46 And then God becomes responsible. 00:17:15.50\00:17:17.50 I mean, we need to search, then God's responsible to show us. 00:17:17.53\00:17:20.77 But we do need to, you know, make an effort to search. 00:17:20.80\00:17:24.37 Hosea says, "My people are destroyed for lack of 00:17:24.41\00:17:28.18 knowledge," then he goes on to say, "because you have 00:17:28.21\00:17:31.75 rejected knowledge." 00:17:31.78\00:17:34.62 Some people are destroyed, not because they don't understand, 00:17:34.65\00:17:37.42 but they never made an effort to know. 00:17:37.45\00:17:39.82 And so you've got to actually seek, Jesus said, and then 00:17:39.85\00:17:43.02 you'll find. 00:17:43.06\00:17:44.86 He doesn't force everything on you. 00:17:44.89\00:17:46.83 He doesn't force the truth on us. 00:17:46.86\00:17:48.76 If we're hungry for the truth, "He that hunger and thirsts 00:17:48.80\00:17:50.73 after righteousness, he will be filled." 00:17:50.77\00:17:53.23 Notice, not just hungering for the truth, but "righteousness" 00:17:53.27\00:17:56.00 means "walking in the truth," being a doer of the Word. 00:17:56.04\00:18:01.88 Charles Wesley said, "All of my requests are lost in one, 00:18:01.91\00:18:07.22 Father, Thy will be done." 00:18:07.25\00:18:09.88 Charles, of course, is that great hymn writer, brother of 00:18:09.92\00:18:12.19 John Wesley. 00:18:12.22\00:18:14.29 "All of my requests are lost in one central request, Father, Thy 00:18:14.32\00:18:17.89 will be done." 00:18:17.93\00:18:19.93 He means, "Thy will be done in my life." 00:18:19.96\00:18:21.96 Greatest most important prayer of Jesus was "Not My will. 00:18:22.00\00:18:25.13 Thy will be done." 00:18:25.17\00:18:27.04 In the Lord's Prayer, "Our Father, which in heaven, 00:18:27.07\00:18:29.37 hallowed be Thy name. 00:18:29.40\00:18:30.81 Thy will be done." 00:18:30.84\00:18:32.61 Thy will be--what? 00:18:32.64\00:18:34.31 Be done. 00:18:34.34\00:18:35.98 Now, that's what I'm going to talk about for the next 00:18:36.01\00:18:37.55 few minutes. 00:18:37.58\00:18:39.21 God wants us to not be hearers of the Word only, deceiving our 00:18:39.25\00:18:41.35 own selves, but he wants us to be doers of the Word. 00:18:41.38\00:18:45.42 It's a very small word, "do," D-O. 00:18:45.45\00:18:49.26 It's a very powerful word, and that word separates the saved 00:18:49.29\00:18:52.96 from the lost. 00:18:52.99\00:18:54.73 Now, people say, "Pastor Doug, what you do has nothing to do 00:18:54.76\00:18:59.30 with your salvation." 00:18:59.33\00:19:01.50 I hear that all the time. 00:19:01.54\00:19:03.17 That is categorically not true. 00:19:03.20\00:19:05.44 They say, "Well, you only need to believe." 00:19:05.47\00:19:07.34 Believing is doing something. 00:19:07.38\00:19:09.21 Yeah, you got to believe. 00:19:09.24\00:19:10.71 Jesus said, "This is the work, that they believe." 00:19:10.75\00:19:12.25 There is a work. 00:19:12.28\00:19:13.88 We need to believe. 00:19:13.92\00:19:15.52 So what separates the lost from the saved is something you do. 00:19:15.55\00:19:18.05 You got to do something about Jesus, and it starts there, and 00:19:18.09\00:19:21.62 then you need to be doing something about His Word. 00:19:21.66\00:19:24.76 It's a lie, it's a misconception that you don't have to 00:19:24.79\00:19:27.66 do anything. 00:19:27.66\00:19:29.36 You do need to do something. 00:19:29.40\00:19:30.93 Jesus says, "Come unto Me." 00:19:30.97\00:19:32.50 That means you need to get up and come. 00:19:32.53\00:19:34.57 There's an action involved in being a Christian. 00:19:34.60\00:19:36.84 So let's talk about this and find out if that's just Pastor 00:19:36.87\00:19:38.91 Doug's idea or is this what Jesus taught. 00:19:38.94\00:19:41.81 Look here, for instance, in Luke 6:46. 00:19:41.84\00:19:45.01 "Why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord,' and do not the things 00:19:45.05\00:19:49.62 which I say?" 00:19:49.65\00:19:51.65 God wants us to do what He says. 00:19:51.69\00:19:53.62 If we're saying, 'Lord, Lord,' you know, we're very religious, 00:19:53.66\00:19:56.32 we're using His name, we're praying in His name, but we're 00:19:56.36\00:19:58.63 not doing what He says, he said, "Why do you do that?" 00:19:58.66\00:20:04.30 Matthew 7, Jesus makes it even more clear here. 00:20:04.33\00:20:07.34 Matthew 7, verse 21, "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, 00:20:07.37\00:20:11.07 Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he that does the 00:20:11.11\00:20:14.64 will of My Father in heaven. 00:20:14.68\00:20:18.48 Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not 00:20:18.51\00:20:22.45 prophesied in Your name? 00:20:22.48\00:20:24.15 We've cast out devils in Your name. 00:20:24.19\00:20:25.92 We've done many wonders in Your name.' 00:20:25.95\00:20:28.26 And I will declare to them, 'I never knew you. 00:20:28.29\00:20:30.59 Depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness." 00:20:30.63\00:20:33.66 They were living lawless lives, but they were very religious. 00:20:33.70\00:20:36.53 Don't forget, the people who crucified Jesus were very 00:20:36.56\00:20:39.07 religious, and they even--they wanted to hasten His death so 00:20:39.10\00:20:43.41 they could run home after killing the Messiah to keep 00:20:43.44\00:20:46.44 the Sabbath. 00:20:46.47\00:20:48.28 Now, I'm a Sabbath keeper, and I believe in a lot of the things 00:20:48.31\00:20:50.85 that the religious leaders believed in. 00:20:50.88\00:20:53.05 They believed in prayer, they believed in tithing. 00:20:53.08\00:20:55.12 They believed in fasting, that's all good. 00:20:55.15\00:20:57.62 Those things won't save you. 00:20:57.65\00:20:59.75 It's like that proud Pharisee who prayed. 00:20:59.79\00:21:02.36 He said, "Oh, this praying is good." 00:21:02.39\00:21:05.26 He says, "I fast, and I pay tithe," and he went to 00:21:05.29\00:21:07.23 the temple. 00:21:07.23\00:21:09.10 He did all those things, but he did not go home justified. 00:21:09.13\00:21:11.87 So there needs to be a life where you put Christianity 00:21:11.90\00:21:16.07 into action. 00:21:16.10\00:21:18.77 Mark 3, verse 32 through 35, "And the multitude were sitting 00:21:18.81\00:21:23.45 around Jesus, and they said to Him, 'Look, Your mother and Your 00:21:23.48\00:21:26.92 brothers are outside, and they're looking for You.' 00:21:26.95\00:21:29.62 But He answered, and He said to them, 'Who is My mother? 00:21:29.65\00:21:32.75 Who are My brothers?' 00:21:32.79\00:21:34.79 And He looked around the circle of those who sat about Him, and 00:21:34.82\00:21:36.86 He said, 'Here are My mother and My brothers. 00:21:36.89\00:21:40.36 For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and 00:21:40.40\00:21:45.80 My mother.'" 00:21:45.83\00:21:48.34 How important was doing the will of God to Jesus? 00:21:48.37\00:21:51.07 Matthew 7, verse 24, "Therefore whoever hears these words of 00:21:51.11\00:21:54.88 Mine, and--you know the next word? 00:21:54.91\00:21:58.08 "--does them, they are likened to a wise man who builds his 00:21:58.11\00:22:01.88 house on the rock, and the rain descends, and the flood comes 00:22:01.92\00:22:05.15 down, and the wind blows, and it beats on the house, but it does 00:22:05.19\00:22:08.12 not fall, because it's founded on the rock. 00:22:08.16\00:22:10.99 But whoever hears these sayings of Mine," talking 00:22:11.03\00:22:14.00 about the Bible, putting it into practice, "and does not 00:22:14.03\00:22:16.90 do them, he's like the foolish man who built his house on 00:22:16.93\00:22:20.44 the sand--" 00:22:20.47\00:22:22.20 And you know the rest of the story. 00:22:22.24\00:22:24.11 The wind blows, and the flood comes, and the rain descends, 00:22:24.14\00:22:25.87 and that house implodes and collapses and blows away because 00:22:25.91\00:22:28.58 it was founded on the sand. 00:22:28.61\00:22:30.75 The difference between the wise man and the fool is not 00:22:30.78\00:22:33.42 the Word. 00:22:33.45\00:22:35.15 They both hear the Word. 00:22:35.18\00:22:36.92 The difference between the wise man and the fool is one does it. 00:22:36.95\00:22:39.42 One does not do it. 00:22:39.45\00:22:41.86 And so God wants us to not just hear the word. 00:22:41.89\00:22:45.09 He wants us to finally put it into practice. 00:22:45.13\00:22:47.93 You know, there's a lot of people that come to church, and 00:22:47.96\00:22:50.70 they are impressed by the truth, and they make a decision, and 00:22:50.73\00:22:52.93 they get baptized, and they start following the Lord, but 00:22:52.97\00:22:56.30 they've got that sin in their life that bothers them, and 00:22:56.34\00:22:59.71 that's good that it bothers them. 00:22:59.74\00:23:02.04 The dangerous thing is sometimes those people are still in the 00:23:02.08\00:23:04.48 church 20 years later, and they're going through all the 00:23:04.51\00:23:07.28 motions of religion. 00:23:07.32\00:23:08.95 They sometimes hold religious office in the church, and 00:23:08.98\00:23:10.85 they've got that same sin, but it just doesn't bother them 00:23:10.89\00:23:13.82 anymore, and that's the most dangerous thing. 00:23:13.86\00:23:17.29 They've made up their mind that somehow God didn't really mean 00:23:17.33\00:23:19.76 what He said in His Word, that we don't really have to do what 00:23:19.79\00:23:22.90 the Word says. 00:23:22.93\00:23:24.87 And Jesus said that's fatal. 00:23:24.90\00:23:28.27 "Many will come to Me in that day--" 00:23:28.30\00:23:30.67 He's talking about the great judgment day, "and they'll say, 00:23:30.71\00:23:32.54 'Lord, Lord.' 00:23:32.57\00:23:34.11 He says, 'I don't know you. 00:23:34.14\00:23:35.71 You didn't do what I said.'" 00:23:35.74\00:23:37.31 They know His name, they're religious, they've probably read 00:23:37.35\00:23:39.08 the Bible, but they didn't do His Word. 00:23:39.11\00:23:41.32 You know--where is it? 00:23:41.35\00:23:44.09 In 1 John, chapter 2, "Love not the world," verse 15, "neither 00:23:44.12\00:23:49.72 the things that are in the world, for if any man loves the 00:23:49.76\00:23:52.19 world, the love of the Father is not in him. 00:23:52.23\00:23:54.66 For all that's in the world, the lust of the flesh, lust of the 00:23:54.73\00:23:57.53 eyes, and the pride of life, is of the world and not of 00:23:57.57\00:24:00.57 the Father. 00:24:00.60\00:24:02.47 And the world is passing away, and the lust thereof," 00:24:02.50\00:24:04.31 notice this, "but he that does the will of God will 00:24:04.34\00:24:09.68 abide forever." 00:24:09.71\00:24:11.55 God is looking for people that will hear His Word and do it. 00:24:11.58\00:24:15.58 You know, one of the great appeals that Moses makes in 00:24:15.62\00:24:17.72 Deuteronomy, he says, "Oh, that My people would fear Me and keep 00:24:17.75\00:24:23.32 all of My commandments always, that it might be well with them 00:24:23.36\00:24:27.03 and their children forever." 00:24:27.03\00:24:29.30 He wants us to be keepers. 00:24:29.33\00:24:31.37 He wants us to be doers of His Word. 00:24:31.40\00:24:33.60 That's what it means when it says, "Living by the Word of 00:24:33.64\00:24:36.14 God," putting it into practice. 00:24:36.17\00:24:38.41 Now, don't be discouraged as I talk, friends, because probably 00:24:38.44\00:24:40.81 anyone who's listening right now is thinking, "Well, Pastor Doug, 00:24:40.84\00:24:43.88 you know, I'm not following everything I know." 00:24:43.91\00:24:46.25 Well, it's a growing process. 00:24:46.28\00:24:49.18 Are you making progress in following, in doing? 00:24:49.22\00:24:54.89 You need to be growing and saying, "I'm doing this now, and 00:24:54.92\00:24:57.69 I'm doing this now," and some things, it takes a while to 00:24:57.73\00:24:59.89 learn how to do it, but becoming comfortable being a non-doer 00:24:59.93\00:25:05.77 is fatal. 00:25:05.80\00:25:08.24 That's the thing, I guess, I'm trying to say. 00:25:08.27\00:25:10.31 All right, a few more verses, Matthew--no, let me see here. 00:25:10.34\00:25:14.98 I'm going to go with Romans 2:13, "For not the hearers of 00:25:15.01\00:25:18.85 the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law 00:25:18.88\00:25:23.18 will be justified." 00:25:23.22\00:25:25.35 No, wait a second. 00:25:25.39\00:25:27.32 But doesn't Paul say that we're not under the law--we're 00:25:27.36\00:25:29.16 under grace? 00:25:29.19\00:25:30.93 Yeah, and Paul said that too. 00:25:30.96\00:25:32.69 Paul's the one who said, Romans 13, "Not the hearers of the law 00:25:32.73\00:25:34.36 are just, but the doers." 00:25:34.36\00:25:36.06 When Paul says that you're not under the law, when you accept 00:25:36.10\00:25:38.63 the sacrifice of Christ, you're no longer under the penalty of 00:25:38.67\00:25:41.27 the law, but he says, "Do we continue in sin, law-breaking, 00:25:41.30\00:25:44.24 that grace may abound? 00:25:44.27\00:25:46.41 God forbid." 00:25:46.44\00:25:48.28 Those of us who love the Lord, we are more obligated now to be 00:25:48.31\00:25:50.88 doers of the word. 00:25:50.91\00:25:53.28 Vance Havner, the famous Baptist evangelist, he said, "The vision 00:25:53.31\00:25:57.39 must be followed by the venture. 00:25:57.42\00:26:00.92 It's not enough to stare up the steps. 00:26:00.96\00:26:03.96 We must step up the stairs." 00:26:03.99\00:26:06.49 A lot of people spend their Christian life staring at the 00:26:06.53\00:26:09.26 steps, and they study the steps, and they evaluate the steps, and 00:26:09.30\00:26:12.47 they argue about the steps. 00:26:12.50\00:26:14.50 They don't ever go up the steps. 00:26:14.54\00:26:16.81 And this is what we're talking about today. 00:26:16.84\00:26:19.51 In Matthew chapter 21, verse 28, "But what do you think?" 00:26:19.54\00:26:23.71 Jesus said. 00:26:23.75\00:26:25.35 This is one of his parables. 00:26:25.38\00:26:27.28 "A certain man had two sons, and he came and he said to the first 00:26:27.32\00:26:29.42 one, 'Son, go work today in my vineyard.' 00:26:29.45\00:26:32.62 And he said, 'I will not,' but afterward, he regretted it, and 00:26:32.65\00:26:37.36 he went. 00:26:37.39\00:26:39.29 Then he came to the second son. 00:26:39.33\00:26:41.20 He said likewise. 00:26:41.23\00:26:43.10 He answered and said, 'I go, sir,' but he did not go." 00:26:43.13\00:26:44.93 And then Jesus asks this, just, very simple question: "Which of 00:26:44.97\00:26:48.07 the two sons did the will of his Father?" 00:26:48.10\00:26:53.51 They said, "The first one." 00:26:53.54\00:26:55.51 The first, he said, "I'm not going to," but he repented 00:26:55.54\00:26:57.45 later, and he did. 00:26:57.48\00:26:59.58 He finally did it. 00:26:59.61\00:27:01.98 They said, "The first one." 00:27:02.02\00:27:04.05 And Jesus said, "Assuredly I say to you, the tax collectors and 00:27:04.09\00:27:06.32 the harlots will enter the kingdom of God before you, for 00:27:06.35\00:27:08.42 John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not 00:27:08.46\00:27:11.36 believe him. 00:27:11.39\00:27:13.43 But the tax collectors and the harlots believed him. 00:27:13.46\00:27:15.46 They repented of their sins. 00:27:15.50\00:27:17.33 And you sought, and afterward, you did not relent and 00:27:17.37\00:27:19.87 believe him." 00:27:19.90\00:27:21.87 Even after you saw the great revival among the publicans and 00:27:21.90\00:27:23.74 the tax collectors and the sinners, they didn't repent. 00:27:23.77\00:27:27.14 Oswald Chambers said, "God doesn't want our success. 00:27:27.18\00:27:32.48 He wants us. 00:27:32.51\00:27:34.32 He doesn't demand our achievements. 00:27:34.35\00:27:36.15 He demands our obedience. 00:27:36.18\00:27:38.12 It's only by obedience that we understand the teachings 00:27:38.15\00:27:41.32 of God." 00:27:41.36\00:27:43.59 Someone else said, "There are times when I've deceived myself 00:27:43.63\00:27:45.59 into thinking, talking about the will of God is a substitute for 00:27:45.63\00:27:48.90 doing it." 00:27:48.93\00:27:51.13 That reminds me of the story in the Bible where Samuel the 00:27:51.17\00:27:53.47 prophet says to king Saul, "I want you to go fight against the 00:27:53.50\00:27:57.11 Amalekites, that enemy nation, and I want you to annihilate 00:27:57.14\00:28:00.81 them and their cattle, and everything they've got, their 00:28:00.84\00:28:04.75 donkeys their sheep--everything. 00:28:04.78\00:28:06.95 And so Saul goes, and he fights against them, and he's 00:28:06.98\00:28:11.79 victorious in the battle, but he thinks, "Well, you know, that 00:28:11.82\00:28:14.96 might be a little extreme to annihilate all these 00:28:14.99\00:28:17.29 really--boy, they've got some really quality camels and 00:28:17.33\00:28:19.69 donkeys and sheep and goats and don't the people deserve the 00:28:19.73\00:28:24.37 spoils of war? 00:28:24.40\00:28:26.40 So they come back from the battle, and King Saul sees 00:28:26.43\00:28:30.31 Samuel the prophet, and he said, "How're you doing?" 00:28:30.34\00:28:34.84 "Blessed of the Lord. 00:28:34.88\00:28:36.71 I've followed the commandment of the Lord. 00:28:36.75\00:28:38.45 I defeated the Amalekites." 00:28:38.48\00:28:40.02 And he didn't even kill the king. 00:28:40.05\00:28:41.58 He's bringing the king back as a captive to show off. 00:28:41.62\00:28:43.69 And Samuel says, "If you've obeyed the commandment of the 00:28:43.72\00:28:46.76 Lord, then what is the bleating of the sheep and the lowing of 00:28:46.79\00:28:49.66 the oxen that I hear in my ears?" 00:28:49.69\00:28:52.16 "Oh, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, all the cattle? 00:28:52.19\00:28:54.20 Oh, yeah, we didn't kill them." 00:28:54.23\00:28:56.06 The people wanted to sacrifice them to the Lord. 00:28:56.10\00:28:58.63 Basically, they didn't want to continue sacrificing their own 00:28:58.67\00:29:01.70 cattle, so to save themselves, they stole the ones that they 00:29:01.74\00:29:05.64 were supposed to annihilate, and that's when Samuel said, "To 00:29:05.67\00:29:09.94 obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat 00:29:09.98\00:29:15.48 of rams. 00:29:15.52\00:29:17.35 For rebellion is the sin of witchcraft." 00:29:17.39\00:29:19.99 And so, when people say, "Well, God didn't really--He's not real 00:29:20.02\00:29:23.09 specific about doing some of these little things--" 00:29:23.12\00:29:27.30 God means what He says. 00:29:27.30\00:29:29.43 His words, especially, you know, the commandments of God, they're 00:29:29.46\00:29:32.53 not suggestions. 00:29:32.57\00:29:34.87 It's kind of like--even for those who are religious, you 00:29:34.90\00:29:36.91 think of Uzzah the priest--and they were given very clear 00:29:36.94\00:29:40.44 instructions on how to transport the ark, and the priests were 00:29:40.48\00:29:43.88 not supposed to lay hands on it, but because they did not obey 00:29:43.91\00:29:47.05 instructions and they were moving the ark on an ox cart 00:29:47.08\00:29:50.09 instead of the priests carrying it, and the oxen stumbled and 00:29:50.12\00:29:53.69 the wagon wiggled, and Uzzah put out his hand to steady the ark 00:29:53.72\00:29:57.19 and he put his hand on the holy ark of God, he died, and people 00:29:57.23\00:30:00.33 think God is very severe. 00:30:00.36\00:30:03.16 God told them what to do and what not to do, and they just 00:30:03.20\00:30:06.43 disobeyed, and they thought God is not particular in 00:30:06.47\00:30:08.87 little things. 00:30:08.90\00:30:11.01 God means what He says, and in the great judgment day, if our 00:30:11.04\00:30:13.51 sins are not forgiven, we will give an account for everything 00:30:13.54\00:30:15.74 that we've done. 00:30:15.78\00:30:18.18 And that's why He'll forgive our past sins our bad doing, but 00:30:18.21\00:30:20.82 then, when we repent, He wants us to now be doers of the Word. 00:30:20.85\00:30:24.89 "Man shall live by every word that proceeds from the mouth 00:30:24.92\00:30:28.56 of God." 00:30:28.59\00:30:30.63 I'm enjoying this lesson because I think it's a subject that's 00:30:30.66\00:30:32.39 really neglected. 00:30:32.43\00:30:34.46 All right, moving along here, Philippians 2, verse 12, and it 00:30:34.50\00:30:42.00 says here, "Therefore, my beloved, as you have always 00:30:42.04\00:30:46.34 obeyed, not in my presence always, but much more in my 00:30:46.37\00:30:49.28 absence, work out your own salvation with fear 00:30:49.31\00:30:52.38 and trembling. 00:30:52.41\00:30:54.38 For it is God who works in you." 00:30:54.42\00:30:56.32 You don't have to worry about obeying in your own strength. 00:30:56.35\00:30:58.25 God will give you the power and the ability to obey. 00:30:58.29\00:31:00.86 "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. 00:31:00.89\00:31:02.82 For it is God who works in you both to will and to do His 00:31:02.86\00:31:06.53 good pleasure." 00:31:06.56\00:31:08.83 Now, I want to pause there just for a moment. 00:31:08.86\00:31:12.13 I think it's a wonderful thing that, when you read the Word of 00:31:12.17\00:31:15.74 God and as you follow the Holy Spirit, there's power that 00:31:15.77\00:31:19.97 changes you. 00:31:20.01\00:31:22.31 You're transformed. 00:31:22.34\00:31:24.35 There's a new heart that's given you. 00:31:24.38\00:31:26.88 Your will is changed by the will of God. 00:31:26.92\00:31:30.15 And so he says, "It's God who works in you both to will and to 00:31:30.19\00:31:34.29 do His good pleasure. 00:31:34.32\00:31:36.59 Do all things without complaining and disputing, that 00:31:36.62\00:31:39.49 you might become blameless and harmless children of God, 00:31:39.53\00:31:42.33 without fault, in the midst of a crooked and a perverse 00:31:42.36\00:31:45.13 generation, among whom as you shine as lights in the world--" 00:31:45.17\00:31:48.97 Christians ought to be different in the world, be advertising for 00:31:49.00\00:31:52.17 Jesus, "holding fast the word--" 00:31:52.21\00:31:56.24 here's where the Word comes in-- "holding fast the word of life, 00:31:56.28\00:31:59.55 so that I might rejoice in the day of Christ, that I've not run 00:31:59.58\00:32:03.05 in vain, or labored in vain." 00:32:03.08\00:32:05.22 Paul means in teaching you the Word. 00:32:05.25\00:32:07.86 Deuteronomy 4, verse 4--notice what did Paul said. 00:32:07.89\00:32:10.79 Paul had said, "Holding fast the word of life." 00:32:10.83\00:32:13.13 If you look in Deuteronomy 4, verse 4, it says, "But you who 00:32:13.16\00:32:18.17 held fast to the Lord your God are alive today." 00:32:18.20\00:32:23.07 You know, Moses talks about cleaving unto the truth, 00:32:23.10\00:32:26.94 holding fast. 00:32:26.98\00:32:28.81 I think the word there for "cleave" is "to be glued" to 00:32:28.84\00:32:31.61 the Lord. 00:32:31.65\00:32:33.31 They used to make this glue out of the hooves of the goats or 00:32:33.35\00:32:35.42 the horses back then, and it's using this ancient term that "We 00:32:35.45\00:32:39.49 are glued to the Lord." 00:32:39.52\00:32:42.09 We go where Jesus goes. 00:32:42.12\00:32:43.76 We cleave to Him. 00:32:43.79\00:32:45.39 We hold fast to His word. 00:32:45.43\00:32:47.46 And God uses every kind of term and analogy He can to try to 00:32:47.50\00:32:51.57 illustrate how closely we are to cleave to Him that we might be 00:32:51.60\00:32:56.40 able to obey. 00:32:56.44\00:32:58.51 So then we're into the section, "Learning from Jesus." 00:32:58.54\00:33:01.01 Very important point: Do not wait until you understand 00:33:01.04\00:33:06.18 everything before you obey what you do understand. 00:33:06.21\00:33:10.35 Some people, they just say, "You know, one of these days, some 00:33:10.39\00:33:16.09 things are still not clear," and so they don't make their 00:33:16.12\00:33:19.63 commitment to Christ. 00:33:19.66\00:33:21.90 If you wait until you understand everything before you obey, you 00:33:21.93\00:33:24.67 never will obey. 00:33:24.70\00:33:26.84 If there are some things that you do understand, follow the 00:33:26.87\00:33:29.74 things you do understand. 00:33:29.77\00:33:31.81 By the way, I think it's a principle of truth in life, 00:33:31.84\00:33:35.44 every element of truth you obey, you will receive a corresponding 00:33:35.48\00:33:39.48 blessing for that truth that you obey. 00:33:39.51\00:33:42.28 I know a people who--they pay tithe. 00:33:42.32\00:33:45.55 There are other areas in their life, they are not Christians, 00:33:45.59\00:33:48.09 but they are convicted about tithe. 00:33:48.12\00:33:50.16 They get the blessings and the promises that God gives to those 00:33:50.19\00:33:52.73 who pay tithe because they obey that commandment. 00:33:52.76\00:33:56.20 I know people--they may have other areas in their life where 00:33:56.23\00:33:59.67 they're disobedient, but they honor their father and mother. 00:33:59.70\00:34:03.10 There's a promise that goes with that, "that your days may be 00:34:03.14\00:34:05.41 long upon the land which the Lord your God gives you." 00:34:05.44\00:34:08.04 I do think that God, in some respects, there are certain 00:34:08.08\00:34:11.51 promises that He will never detach from obeying, and you 00:34:11.55\00:34:15.88 will receive those promises because it's just cause 00:34:15.92\00:34:18.79 and effect. 00:34:18.82\00:34:20.72 And so follow whatever truth you do know--you'll be blessed. 00:34:20.76\00:34:23.29 That'll increase your faith and say, "Maybe I ought to follow 00:34:23.32\00:34:25.96 everything, and I'll have all the blessings that God wants me 00:34:25.99\00:34:28.66 to have." 00:34:28.70\00:34:31.23 As a Christian, you're a follower of Jesus. 00:34:31.27\00:34:33.30 How thoroughly did Jesus obey? 00:34:33.34\00:34:35.54 Christ obeyed in every area of His life. 00:34:35.57\00:34:37.97 Now, look at the example of Christ, how I used the Word, 00:34:38.01\00:34:41.11 Luke 4, this is the great temptation of Christ. 00:34:41.14\00:34:43.98 Luke 4:13--I'm sorry, Luke 4:3-13, "And the devil comes to 00:34:44.01\00:34:49.62 Him in the wilderness, and he says, If you're the Son of God, 00:34:49.65\00:34:52.35 command this stone to become bread.'" 00:34:52.39\00:34:54.79 And we read this already. 00:34:54.82\00:34:56.49 "Jesus said, 'It is written, "Man shall not live by bread 00:34:56.52\00:34:59.16 alone, but by every word of God."' 00:34:59.19\00:35:01.80 Then the devil, taking them up on a high mountain, said to Him, 00:35:01.83\00:35:05.27 'All authority is given me, and I'll give it to You and the 00:35:05.30\00:35:08.60 glory of it.' 00:35:08.64\00:35:10.47 He said, 'It's been delivered to me, and I give it to whoever 00:35:10.51\00:35:13.61 I wish. 00:35:13.64\00:35:15.24 Therefore if You will worship me, all will be Yours. 00:35:15.28\00:35:17.91 You don't need to die for the sins of the world, I'll give You 00:35:17.95\00:35:19.81 the world.' 00:35:19.85\00:35:21.28 Jesus answered and said, 'Get behind Me, Satan. 00:35:21.32\00:35:23.32 It is written, "You shall worship the Lord your God and 00:35:23.35\00:35:25.62 Him only shall you serve."' 00:35:25.65\00:35:28.06 Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, and set Him on the 00:35:28.09\00:35:30.43 pinnacle of the temple and said, 'If You are the Son of God, 00:35:30.46\00:35:32.99 throw Yourself down from here. 00:35:33.03\00:35:35.33 For it is written, "He'll give His angels charge over You to 00:35:35.36\00:35:37.80 keep You, and in their hands, they'll bear You up lest You 00:35:37.83\00:35:40.44 dash Your foot against the stone."' 00:35:40.47\00:35:43.54 And Jesus answered and said, 'It is written, you shall not tempt 00:35:43.57\00:35:46.44 the Lord your God.'" 00:35:46.47\00:35:48.84 Now, notice, all three temptations, 00:35:48.88\00:35:50.51 Jesus said, "It is written, it is written, it is written." 00:35:50.55\00:35:52.88 By the way, which one of the apostles, Matthew, Mark, Luke, 00:35:52.91\00:35:56.38 John, was a witness to the temptations of Christ? 00:35:56.42\00:36:01.36 None of them. 00:36:01.39\00:36:03.53 It says, "He was led by the Spirit into the wilderness." 00:36:03.56\00:36:06.46 Christ was alone. 00:36:06.49\00:36:08.33 So how did the apostles learn about Jesus' battle with 00:36:08.36\00:36:10.43 the devil? 00:36:10.47\00:36:12.33 He must've told them about it--was probably not too long 00:36:12.37\00:36:14.97 after He called the apostles. 00:36:15.00\00:36:16.97 He said, you know, "Here's what I've experienced," and they 00:36:17.01\00:36:20.41 recorded this. 00:36:20.44\00:36:21.74 How did Jesus meet every temptation? 00:36:21.78\00:36:23.65 He told the disciples, "I fought every temptation with the Word 00:36:23.68\00:36:26.08 of God." 00:36:26.11\00:36:28.05 It is written, it is written, it is written. 00:36:28.08\00:36:30.52 Matthew 11, verse 10, "For this is he of whom it is written, 00:36:30.55\00:36:34.92 'Behold, I sent My messenger before Your face, who will 00:36:34.96\00:36:38.66 prepare Your way before You.'" 00:36:38.69\00:36:41.33 When He identified John the Baptist, He said, "He's the one 00:36:41.36\00:36:43.53 because it is written." 00:36:43.57\00:36:45.80 John 5:39, "You search the Scriptures, for in them you 00:36:45.83\00:36:48.47 think you have eternal life. 00:36:48.50\00:36:50.51 These are they that testify of Me." 00:36:50.54\00:36:53.07 The whole essence of the Bible is about Jesus. 00:36:53.11\00:36:55.88 And this is one of my favorite subjects. 00:36:55.91\00:36:57.81 I could use another three hours right now to teach this. 00:36:57.85\00:37:00.75 I wrote a book called "Shadows of Light: Seeing Christ in All 00:37:00.78\00:37:04.85 the Bible," and when you read through the Bible and you look 00:37:04.89\00:37:07.92 at the stories of the Bible, I mean, there's very plain 00:37:07.96\00:37:11.43 Scriptures like this where Jesus said, "Search the Scriptures. 00:37:11.46\00:37:13.93 These are they that testify of Me." 00:37:13.96\00:37:16.53 "In the volume of the book, it is written of Me." 00:37:16.56\00:37:19.30 Moses and the prophets--He went from Moses and the prophets in 00:37:19.33\00:37:24.74 Luke chapter 24, and showed them from the Scriptures that He was 00:37:24.77\00:37:28.34 the Messiah. 00:37:28.38\00:37:30.38 But I see that--Jesus, in the story of Joseph. 00:37:30.41\00:37:34.15 I see Jesus in the story of Adam. 00:37:34.18\00:37:37.39 Even Paul makes an analogy of Jesus being the second Adam. 00:37:37.42\00:37:42.52 I think it's interesting. 00:37:42.56\00:37:44.43 Adam goes to sleep on the sixth day. 00:37:44.46\00:37:46.96 God opens his side, takes out a rib and gives him a wife. 00:37:47.00\00:37:51.23 On the sixth day of the week, Jesus goes to sleep. 00:37:51.27\00:37:53.47 His side is opened with the spear. 00:37:53.50\00:37:55.50 Through that stream of blood and water, the church is born, 00:37:55.54\00:37:57.64 His bride. 00:37:57.67\00:37:59.67 There's just so many analogies between--Noah and Christ. 00:37:59.71\00:38:02.91 Noah found grace. 00:38:02.94\00:38:05.55 It's through Noah all the world is saved. 00:38:05.58\00:38:07.55 Through--I mentioned Joseph. 00:38:07.58\00:38:09.75 You know, Joseph is betrayed for the price of a slave by his own 00:38:09.78\00:38:12.35 brothers, and he forgives them, and he feeds the whole world 00:38:12.39\00:38:16.32 bread, which is a symbol for the Word of God, and 00:38:16.36\00:38:19.19 forgives everybody. 00:38:19.23\00:38:21.23 I see Jesus in the story of David. 00:38:21.26\00:38:23.53 Matter of fact, the three most outstanding Old Testament 00:38:23.57\00:38:25.80 characters that are types of Christ--Joseph, David, Moses, 00:38:25.83\00:38:31.61 but there are many others. 00:38:31.64\00:38:33.58 I mean, Moses, you know, he's a great savior. 00:38:33.61\00:38:36.68 He's a great type of Christ. 00:38:36.71\00:38:38.75 And Moses was a great law-giver. 00:38:38.78\00:38:41.72 Christ is the great law-giver, and there's so many analogies. 00:38:41.75\00:38:44.89 And so, when you read through the Scriptures, the New and the 00:38:44.92\00:38:48.32 Old Testament, you're finding the story of Jesus. 00:38:48.36\00:38:50.99 Even examples in the New Testament. 00:38:51.03\00:38:53.26 In the life of John the Baptist, you see parallels to Christ. 00:38:53.29\00:38:55.83 In the life of Stephen--Stephen is unjustly tried by 00:38:55.86\00:38:59.23 the Sanhedrin. 00:38:59.27\00:39:01.37 He prays for the forgiveness of those who are executing him. 00:39:01.40\00:39:04.41 He's taken out of the city like Jesus. 00:39:04.44\00:39:07.11 The Bible talks about the clothes were laid down at the 00:39:07.14\00:39:09.78 feet of Paul. 00:39:09.81\00:39:11.71 There were clothes laid down. 00:39:11.75\00:39:13.85 They argued over clothes when they crucified Jesus, and you 00:39:13.88\00:39:16.28 start looking, and you see Stephen went through the same 00:39:16.32\00:39:19.05 experience of Christ, three and a half years after Jesus, which 00:39:19.09\00:39:23.46 is how long Jesus also taught. 00:39:23.49\00:39:25.93 And so even in the New Testament, you can see types and 00:39:25.96\00:39:28.86 shadows and analogies of Jesus. 00:39:28.90\00:39:31.77 And so we learn from Christ and His example here. 00:39:31.80\00:39:35.00 Deuteronomy, 9, verse 23, believing and obedience goes 00:39:35.04\00:39:41.81 hand in hand. 00:39:41.84\00:39:44.01 "Likewise, when the Lord sent you from Kadish Barnea, saying, 00:39:44.05\00:39:46.51 'Go up and possess the land that I've given you,' then you 00:39:46.55\00:39:49.68 rebelled against the commandment of the Lord, and you did not 00:39:49.72\00:39:52.25 believe Him nor obey His voice." 00:39:52.29\00:39:55.62 When they don't obey the Word, it's because they don't believe, 00:39:55.66\00:39:58.49 and you can read in Hebrews 13--I'm sorry, Hebrews 3, verse 00:39:58.53\00:40:02.86 18 and 19, "And to whom did He swear that they would not enter 00:40:02.90\00:40:07.67 His rest, but those who did not obey? 00:40:07.70\00:40:11.17 So we see they could not enter because of unbelief." 00:40:11.21\00:40:14.44 Disobedience is really unbelief, and without belief, you cannot 00:40:14.48\00:40:17.05 be saved. 00:40:17.08\00:40:19.51 Faith is one of the most misunderstood and mis-taught 00:40:19.55\00:40:21.75 subjects in Christianity today. 00:40:21.78\00:40:24.72 People think that you can have the faith of devils and go to 00:40:24.75\00:40:27.29 heaven, that all you have to do is say you believe that Jesus 00:40:27.32\00:40:29.86 died for you on the cross and that you believe that He died 00:40:29.89\00:40:32.63 for sin--and the devil knows all of that. 00:40:32.66\00:40:35.06 Christian saving-faith is a faith where you believe and you 00:40:35.10\00:40:38.93 act upon that faith. 00:40:38.97\00:40:41.30 If I tell you that a tornado is going to come--you're sitting 00:40:41.34\00:40:44.64 here in the room--a tornado is going to come in five minutes 00:40:44.67\00:40:48.74 and totally demolish this building, do you say, "Amen, 00:40:48.78\00:40:51.88 Pastor, like, we believe you," and you don't get up and move? 00:40:51.91\00:40:53.98 You don't believe me. 00:40:54.02\00:40:56.18 So, Jesus, when He talks about it, "Whosoever believeth in Him 00:40:56.22\00:40:58.85 will not perish but have everlasting life," yes, it does 00:40:58.89\00:41:01.99 start with a simple calling out to Jesus, believing He can save 00:41:02.02\00:41:07.23 you, but then that belief goes on by believing He can save you 00:41:07.23\00:41:11.47 from sin, not just the past penalty, but He can save you 00:41:11.50\00:41:15.40 from the power, the present power of sin, and ultimately the 00:41:15.44\00:41:18.91 presence of sin in heaven. 00:41:18.94\00:41:21.54 And so this is the kind of faith, a faith that Jesus can 00:41:21.58\00:41:24.78 really save you from your sins, not in your sins. 00:41:24.81\00:41:27.32 You can come to Him in your sins and ask for mercy and 00:41:27.35\00:41:31.32 justification, and then He saves you from your sins 00:41:31.35\00:41:34.09 through sanctification. 00:41:34.12\00:41:36.19 So there needs to be a following, a living of the Word 00:41:36.22\00:41:39.76 that happens in the life. 00:41:39.79\00:41:43.50 All right, moving on here, who is it? 00:41:43.53\00:41:45.63 Dwight L. Moody said, "Never think that Jesus' commands are a 00:41:45.67\00:41:49.40 trifle, nor dare to trifle with anything He has commanded." 00:41:49.44\00:41:53.54 "Obedience is the key that unlocks the door to every 00:41:53.58\00:41:57.75 profound spiritual experience." 00:41:57.78\00:42:01.08 "Obedience," and this is Samuel Dickey Gordon said, "Obedience 00:42:01.12\00:42:03.72 is the eye of the Spirit. 00:42:03.75\00:42:06.86 Failure to obey dims and dulls the spiritual understanding." 00:42:06.89\00:42:11.33 When we know what God wants, and we neglect to obey, our 00:42:11.36\00:42:14.20 spiritual understanding can get dull. 00:42:14.20\00:42:16.83 If you want your spiritual insights to be sharpened and 00:42:16.87\00:42:19.50 clarified, walk in the light that you have. 00:42:19.53\00:42:23.47 Remember, the light is not for looking at. 00:42:23.51\00:42:25.44 It's for walking in. 00:42:25.47\00:42:27.44 1 John 2:17, "The world is passing away, and the lust, but 00:42:27.48\00:42:30.41 everyone who does the will of God will abide forever." 00:42:30.45\00:42:33.31 Oswald Chambers said--I know I'm going fast. 00:42:33.35\00:42:36.65 It's because I got so much to share with you, friends. 00:42:36.69\00:42:40.09 Oswald Chambers says, "Obedience to God will mean that some other 00:42:40.12\00:42:44.26 time--that at some time or other you enter into desolation." 00:42:44.29\00:42:48.76 Yes, there are challenges when you obey. 00:42:48.80\00:42:51.40 Jesus went into the wilderness, and He was tempted, but He came 00:42:51.43\00:42:53.57 out victorious. 00:42:53.60\00:42:57.01 What about Jesus versus Scripture? 00:42:57.04\00:43:00.71 Are the words of Jesus more important than maybe some of the 00:43:00.74\00:43:03.38 other parts of the Bible in the Old Testament? 00:43:03.41\00:43:06.11 I mean, why do Bibles have red letter? 00:43:06.15\00:43:08.12 If it's all the Word of God, why isn't it all red? 00:43:08.15\00:43:10.69 I know they got a new Bible now. 00:43:10.72\00:43:12.99 It's got the words of God in the Old Testament are in blue, and, 00:43:13.02\00:43:16.09 of course, the words of Jesus in the New Testament are red. 00:43:16.12\00:43:19.96 And I think it sometimes helps us identify who's speaking. 00:43:20.00\00:43:22.73 Notice what Jesus says, John 5:45, "Do not think that I 00:43:22.76\00:43:27.14 accuse you before the Father. 00:43:27.17\00:43:30.01 There is one who accuses you--Moses, in whom you trust. 00:43:30.04\00:43:33.71 For if you believe Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote 00:43:33.74\00:43:37.68 about Me." 00:43:37.71\00:43:39.51 There is no conflict between the words of Jesus and Moses. 00:43:39.55\00:43:42.15 Some people say, "Well, that's the Old Covenant, and now we've 00:43:42.18\00:43:44.62 got the New Covenant." 00:43:44.65\00:43:46.49 The Bible tells us that it's all the Word of God. 00:43:46.52\00:43:48.76 The New Covenant is the same law of Moses, written in our 00:43:48.79\00:43:51.89 hearts--same principles. 00:43:51.93\00:43:54.63 Moses 5:20--Matthew 5:21, "You've heard that it was said 00:43:54.66\00:43:59.47 by those of old, 'You shall not murder, and whoever murderers 00:43:59.50\00:44:03.00 will be in danger of the judgment.' 00:44:03.04\00:44:04.81 But I say to you--" 00:44:04.84\00:44:06.88 Now, is Moses saying that his--or is Jesus saying 00:44:06.91\00:44:08.81 His words trump Moses, that it eclipses Moses? 00:44:08.84\00:44:11.15 "But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother 00:44:11.18\00:44:15.15 without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. 00:44:15.18\00:44:18.79 And whoever says to his brother, 'Raca,' shall be in danger of 00:44:18.82\00:44:21.82 the council. 00:44:21.86\00:44:23.39 But whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be in danger of hellfire." 00:44:23.43\00:44:25.49 So is Christ saying that his word is less--or more important 00:44:25.53\00:44:30.23 than the Old Testament? 00:44:30.27\00:44:33.34 Matthew 5:27, "You have heard it said by those of old, 'You shall 00:44:33.37\00:44:36.00 not commit adultery.'" 00:44:36.04\00:44:37.84 That's one of the Ten Commandments. 00:44:37.87\00:44:39.97 Jesus said, "But I say to you--" 00:44:40.01\00:44:41.84 now, is Christ going to say it's okay to commit adultery? 00:44:41.88\00:44:44.11 No, he said, "I say to you whoever looks on a woman to lust 00:44:44.15\00:44:46.31 after her has already committed adultery in his heart." 00:44:46.35\00:44:49.02 Jesus is not taking and nullifying the words of Moses. 00:44:49.05\00:44:52.49 Jesus is magnifying the words of Moses. 00:44:52.52\00:44:56.26 So when he said, "But I say to you," he's making it bold. 00:44:56.29\00:45:00.26 He's underscoring, he's highlighting. 00:45:00.30\00:45:02.96 Proof for that, the prophecy about the coming Messiah said, 00:45:03.00\00:45:08.17 Isaiah 42:21, "The Lord is well pleased for His 00:45:08.20\00:45:10.77 righteousness' sake. 00:45:10.81\00:45:13.04 He will exalt the law and make it honorable." 00:45:13.07\00:45:15.88 I think one version says, "He will magnify the law and make 00:45:15.91\00:45:19.11 it honorable." 00:45:19.15\00:45:21.02 So Jesus did not come to do away with. 00:45:21.05\00:45:23.08 He said, "Do not think I've come to destroy the law or 00:45:23.12\00:45:25.09 the prophets. 00:45:25.12\00:45:26.99 I didn't come to destroy, but fulfill." 00:45:27.02\00:45:29.79 Now, quiet times with God--got a couple of minutes to talk 00:45:29.82\00:45:31.49 about that. 00:45:31.53\00:45:33.33 One of the ways that we're going to have the power and the 00:45:33.36\00:45:34.96 strength of the spirit is you must spend time with God. 00:45:35.00\00:45:37.60 You will become like Jesus. 00:45:37.63\00:45:39.30 You will love Jesus as you commune with Jesus. 00:45:39.33\00:45:42.37 To know God is to love Him. 00:45:42.40\00:45:44.41 You cannot obey Him if you do not know Him. 00:45:44.44\00:45:45.77 You will not know Him if you don't take time to know Him. 00:45:45.81\00:45:50.15 You need to spend time with Him every day in prayer, in reading 00:45:50.18\00:45:53.11 His Word, even the days you don't feel like it. 00:45:53.15\00:45:56.08 Even the days you feel you're too busy, you must be religious 00:45:56.12\00:45:58.65 about it, that's right. 00:45:58.69\00:46:00.56 It needs to be a priority with you. 00:46:00.59\00:46:02.99 Psalm 119, verse 147, "I rise before the dawning of the 00:46:03.02\00:46:09.16 morning, and I cry for help. 00:46:09.20\00:46:11.07 I hope in your word." 00:46:11.10\00:46:12.70 Look into the Word early in the day. 00:46:12.73\00:46:14.44 This is when the children of Israel ate the manna. 00:46:14.47\00:46:16.04 Psalm 119, verse 148, "My eyes are awake through night watches, 00:46:16.07\00:46:21.64 that I might meditate on Your word." 00:46:21.68\00:46:24.25 Meditating on the Word even in the night, rising in 00:46:24.28\00:46:27.35 the morning. 00:46:27.38\00:46:29.18 When you lay down, when you rise up, surround yourself with the 00:46:29.22\00:46:31.49 Word of God. 00:46:31.52\00:46:33.72 Psalm 46, verse 10, "Be still and know that I am God." 00:46:33.76\00:46:37.09 There's a time to be quiet and enjoy our time with God. 00:46:37.13\00:46:40.80 Psalm 62, verse 1 and 2, and verse 5, "Truly my soul silently 00:46:40.83\00:46:46.33 waits for God." 00:46:46.37\00:46:48.34 You've heard of quiet time with God. 00:46:48.37\00:46:50.61 "From Him comes my salvation. 00:46:50.64\00:46:52.67 He only is my rock and my salvation. 00:46:52.71\00:46:54.84 He is my defense, I'll not be moved." 00:46:54.88\00:46:56.88 My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is 00:46:56.91\00:47:01.75 come from Him." 00:47:01.78\00:47:03.82 Even Jesus told the apostles, "Come aside by yourself to a 00:47:03.85\00:47:06.29 deserted place and rest a while." 00:47:06.32\00:47:09.36 Spend time in nature, communing with God. 00:47:09.39\00:47:11.66 It's one of my favorite things to do is just--is to get out and 00:47:11.69\00:47:14.56 get as far away from civilization as I can and just 00:47:14.56\00:47:18.27 spend some time quietly with God. 00:47:18.30\00:47:21.94 And, for me, "quietly with God" might mean sitting on the top of 00:47:21.97\00:47:25.81 a 450-horsepower quad, but I get out in nature, and that's how 00:47:25.84\00:47:30.31 I'm spending my quiet time with God. 00:47:30.35\00:47:32.65 No, but, really, you get out there, and you're surrounded 00:47:32.68\00:47:35.18 with the things of God, and you can stop, and you can pray, and 00:47:35.22\00:47:38.35 it is quiet, and you can see God in nature, and it's--there's 00:47:38.39\00:47:41.36 something majestic, something awesome about that, but we need 00:47:41.39\00:47:45.36 that quiet time. 00:47:45.39\00:47:47.50 And then, the last point--I only have a moment to talk about 00:47:47.50\00:47:52.33 this: Memory in song. 00:47:52.37\00:47:54.70 Commit the Word to memory. 00:47:54.74\00:47:57.04 That's how God's Holy Spirit will bring it back. 00:47:57.07\00:47:59.37 Psalm 119, verse 11, "Your word I've hid in my heart that I 00:47:59.41\00:48:01.41 might not sin." 00:48:01.44\00:48:03.65 And one way we do this is by singing the words of God. 00:48:03.68\00:48:06.88 "Now therefore, I write down this song," 00:48:06.92\00:48:10.19 Moses says in Deuteronomy 31:19, "write down this song 00:48:10.22\00:48:14.16 for yourselves, and teach it to the children of Israel. 00:48:14.19\00:48:17.46 Put it in their mouths." 00:48:17.49\00:48:19.16 They were to teach the Word of God in song to their children. 00:48:19.19\00:48:22.46 Numbers 21, verse 16, "From there they went to Beer, which 00:48:22.50\00:48:26.70 is a well, and the Lord said to Moses, 'Gather the people 00:48:26.74\00:48:30.94 together, and I will give them water.' 00:48:30.97\00:48:34.11 Then Israel sang this song: 'Spring up, O well. 00:48:34.14\00:48:38.38 All of you sing to it.'" 00:48:38.41\00:48:40.85 So they were to sing a song and remember 00:48:40.88\00:48:42.55 how God supplied water for them. 00:48:42.58\00:48:44.89 It's like that song, "Spring Up, O Well," and "Like the woman at 00:48:44.92\00:48:49.39 the well, I was seeking." 00:48:49.42\00:48:51.63 And so we write these songs to help us remember the Word 00:48:51.66\00:48:53.66 of God. 00:48:53.70\00:48:55.40 A lot of good hymns--one of the ways you know a good hymn, it 00:48:55.43\00:48:57.30 helps you remember the Word of God. 00:48:57.33\00:48:59.93 Ephesians 5:19, "Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns, and 00:49:00.04\00:49:03.57 spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart for 00:49:03.61\00:49:08.24 the Lord." 00:49:08.28\00:49:10.35 And then Colossians 3:16, "Let the word of Christ dwell in you 00:49:10.38\00:49:13.31 richly in all wisdom, teaching in admonishing one another in 00:49:13.35\00:49:17.12 psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in 00:49:17.15\00:49:23.56 your heart to the Lord." 00:49:23.59\00:49:25.46 These things help us remember the Word of God. 00:49:25.49\00:49:27.30 Wow, well, that's been a great quarter studying Scripture. 00:49:27.36\00:49:29.30 Next week, we're going guess, 00:51:33.42\00:51:36.39 dealing with all the temptations that you would have in a big 00:51:36.42\00:51:39.19 city, everything that you could imagine that you could run into. 00:51:39.23\00:51:42.93 Drugs, crime was always here. 00:51:42.96\00:51:47.60 When I was at a young age, I actually got into trouble with 00:51:47.64\00:51:50.54 the law, and my only out was to join the military at the time in 00:51:50.57\00:51:54.88 order to not do time. 00:51:54.91\00:51:57.81 So I left New York and traveled the world a little bit while I 00:51:57.85\00:52:01.55 was in the military. 00:52:01.58\00:52:04.02 Eventually, I came back. 00:52:04.05\00:52:06.22 Having grown up as a hip-hop kid, I eventually found myself 00:52:06.25\00:52:09.26 working in the music business, actually. 00:52:09.29\00:52:12.16 I worked at a couple major radio stations, hip-hop, reggae. 00:52:12.19\00:52:15.16 I was at all the big reggae shows, working them. 00:52:15.20\00:52:17.93 No matter what I did to try and satisfy myself, nothing 00:52:17.97\00:52:21.20 really worked. 00:52:21.24\00:52:24.17 I remember I used to play at this one club in Manhattan. 00:52:24.21\00:52:27.11 We used to play there every Friday night. 00:52:27.14\00:52:29.78 So I came home one Saturday morning after leaving the club, 00:52:29.81\00:52:33.18 and I turned on the video channel like I usually do. 00:52:33.21\00:52:36.85 So there was this guy on the video channel, talking, and he 00:52:36.89\00:52:39.72 was definitely out of place, but the things that he was saying 00:52:39.75\00:52:42.99 just totally amazed me. 00:52:43.02\00:52:46.29 I never heard anyone speak about the Bible like this before, so I 00:52:46.33\00:52:49.63 started coming home early on Saturday mornings just to catch 00:52:49.66\00:52:53.10 this show. 00:52:53.13\00:52:55.14 I found the things that he was saying, absolutely amazing to 00:52:55.17\00:52:57.27 the point where it literally made me stop and start to think 00:52:57.31\00:53:02.91 about how I was living my life. 00:53:02.94\00:53:05.38 So I found that all of these things that I have been doing to 00:53:05.41\00:53:08.35 try and find happiness were actually not making me happy at 00:53:08.38\00:53:12.09 all but were really just leaving me empty inside. 00:53:12.12\00:53:15.66 When I started reading the Bible and it started to make sense, I 00:53:15.69\00:53:19.29 started to make changes. 00:53:19.33\00:53:21.50 I even tried to keep the Sabbath, which I failed 00:53:21.53\00:53:24.07 at miserably. 00:53:24.10\00:53:26.33 So I was actually invited by Amazing Facts to go to see a 00:53:26.37\00:53:29.00 live series at one of the local churches, but after going the 00:53:29.04\00:53:33.94 first night, I ended up going another night and another night. 00:53:33.98\00:53:37.38 I stayed for the entire series. 00:53:37.41\00:53:39.85 That was the day I made a decision that changed the rest 00:53:39.88\00:53:41.98 of my life forever. 00:53:42.02\00:53:44.09 I gave my life to Christ, and everything was different 00:53:44.12\00:53:46.22 after that. 00:53:46.25\00:53:48.12 I made a decision to give up the music business, stop hanging out 00:53:48.16\00:53:50.26 at all of the clubs. 00:53:50.29\00:53:52.03 I made a decision that was eternal for me and for 00:53:52.06\00:53:54.40 my family. 00:53:54.46\00:53:56.60 I started going to church. 00:53:56.63\00:53:59.60 I got a position in church where I was actually in charge of the 00:53:59.63\00:54:02.37 personal ministries department, and the same Amazing Facts 00:54:02.40\00:54:06.64 studies that changed my life, I actually got to share them with 00:54:06.68\00:54:10.38 people and sit down with them and tell them about Jesus. 00:54:10.41\00:54:16.08 ¤¤¤ 00:54:16.12\00:54:24.53 Doug: Have you ever heard a mouse howl like a wolf? 00:54:32.20\00:54:36.04 Well, what would you expect would happen when a creature 00:54:36.07\00:54:38.37 changes its destiny from the hapless prey to mighty predator? 00:54:38.41\00:54:42.91 From the outside, they look very much like just an oversized 00:54:42.94\00:54:45.35 field mouse, cute brown fur, white on the underbelly, nice 00:54:45.38\00:54:50.69 little beady eyes, but that's where the similarities stop. 00:54:50.72\00:54:53.66 Grasshopper mice are very unusual, making them the objects 00:54:53.69\00:54:57.93 of great interest for animal researchers. 00:54:57.96\00:55:02.43 These furry little creatures are found in the harsh deserts of 00:55:02.46\00:55:05.00 North America. 00:55:05.03\00:55:07.07 They're very territorial in nature, and they will monopolize 00:55:07.10\00:55:08.87 and fend off 25 acres. 00:55:08.90\00:55:11.77 They don't build their own homes but sort of confiscate the 00:55:11.81\00:55:13.64 burrows and the homes of other creatures. 00:55:13.68\00:55:17.58 They're not called grasshopper mice because they hop around, 00:55:17.61\00:55:20.48 but it's because they eat a lot of grasshoppers. 00:55:20.52\00:55:22.55 In fact, scientists have discovered grasshopper mice are 00:55:22.58\00:55:24.72 the only mice that are purely carnivorous. 00:55:24.75\00:55:28.12 They hunt much like cats or weasels, stalking their prey in 00:55:28.16\00:55:32.66 a predatory fashion, and when they pounce, they are ferocious, 00:55:32.69\00:55:36.23 sometimes even taking on snakes and scorpions and centipedes. 00:55:36.26\00:55:40.80 When a grasshopper mouse gets into a fierce battle with a 00:55:40.84\00:55:44.67 snake or a scorpion or centipede, they may be bit or 00:55:44.71\00:55:48.68 stung several times, but what is amazing to researchers is 00:55:48.71\00:55:53.01 they've noticed, when they are bitten, they somehow shake it 00:55:53.05\00:55:55.85 off because they convert the toxin and the venom 00:55:55.88\00:55:58.09 to painkiller. 00:55:58.12\00:56:01.16 I think you can understand why this information would be of 00:56:01.19\00:56:03.29 special interest to scientists that are trying to discover new 00:56:03.32\00:56:06.93 ways for people to deal with chronic pain. 00:56:06.96\00:56:10.13 One of the most intriguing characteristics of these little 00:56:10.17\00:56:14.77 creatures is, when they're defending their territory or 00:56:14.80\00:56:19.01 celebrating a victory over some adversary, they'll throw back 00:56:19.04\00:56:21.74 their head and let out this earthshaking howl. 00:56:21.78\00:56:25.31 It's a mousy howl, check it out. 00:56:25.35\00:56:27.75 [howling] 00:56:27.78\00:56:33.62 Doug: The grasshopper mouse is not the only member 00:56:33.66\00:56:35.32 of creation that can survive encounters with 00:56:35.36\00:56:38.06 venomous predators. 00:56:38.09\00:56:41.00 In Luke 10:19, it says, "Behold, I will give you authority to 00:56:41.03\00:56:44.13 trample on serpents and scorpions and over all the power 00:56:44.17\00:56:47.64 of the enemy. 00:56:47.67\00:56:49.30 Nothing will by any means hurt you." 00:56:49.34\00:56:52.04 We don't have to be the biggest and the strongest to defeat our 00:56:52.07\00:56:54.48 enemy and let out that victory roar. 00:56:54.51\00:56:57.01 When God called David to be king, no human would've guessed 00:56:57.05\00:57:00.15 that he had it in him. 00:57:00.18\00:57:01.78 He was young and insignificant. 00:57:01.82\00:57:03.89 From the outside, he looked like there was no greatness in him, 00:57:03.92\00:57:07.16 but when God looked at his heart, he saw courage, humility, 00:57:07.19\00:57:10.56 compassion, and love. 00:57:10.59\00:57:12.49 David wasn't perfect, and he made mistakes, but through God's 00:57:12.53\00:57:15.40 power, he was able to conquer giants. 00:57:15.43\00:57:18.93 Friend, God does not intend that you live out the rest of your 00:57:18.97\00:57:21.77 life cowering and trembling like a little field mouse. 00:57:21.80\00:57:25.47 If God can take the grasshopper mouse and give him courage so 00:57:25.51\00:57:28.58 that he fights snakes and scorpions and centipedes, if God 00:57:28.61\00:57:32.35 can put in the heart of David the courage to fight giants like 00:57:32.38\00:57:35.55 Goliath, then he can give you that same courage. 00:57:35.58\00:57:39.15 The Scriptures say, "God has not given you the spirit of fear, 00:57:39.19\00:57:42.66 but of power, love, and a sound mind." 00:57:42.69\00:57:46.19 And you could have that peace in your heart when you invite the 00:57:46.23\00:57:48.93 Prince of Peace in your heart. 00:57:48.96\00:57:50.60 Why don't you do that right now? 00:57:50.63\00:57:53.17 ¤¤¤ 00:57:53.20\00:58:00.81 ¤¤¤ 00:58:02.44\00:58:11.35
