prophecies in the Bible as well.

Well, under the first section,
we're going to take a minute and

talk about this.

We have something that's called
historicism and prophecy, and
00:03:28.47\00:03:30.77
it's really important at this
stage in the lesson to take a

moment and explain that when you
read the Bible, for more--most
00:03:34.48\00:03:38.88
Christians there are
three real perspectives.
00:03:38.91\00:03:42.85
There's three modes or sciences
of interpretation that are
00:03:42.88\00:03:46.76
usually used by
various denominations.
00:03:46.79\00:03:50.19
One is called historicism.
00:03:50.23\00:03:53.60
There's the
historicist view of prophecy.
00:03:53.63\00:03:56.36
One is preterism
and one is futurism.
00:03:56.40\00:04:00.94
Let's take a minute and
just talk about what that is.
00:04:00.97\00:04:03.20
The historicist and this is,
you know, what this section is
00:04:03.24\00:04:07.01
dedicated to, this is a group of
people who take the prophecies
00:04:07.04\00:04:11.61
and we believe they go from the
time of the prophet's utterance
00:04:11.65\00:04:15.05
and it's a continuous line
of prophecies up 'til the final
00:04:15.08\00:04:20.29
fulfillment, often being the
Second Coming of the Lord or the
00:04:20.32\00:04:23.66
earth made new and heaven.
00:04:23.69\00:04:26.63
Then you get preterism and I'll
come back and we'll say more
00:04:26.66\00:04:31.17
about historicism in a minute.
00:04:31.20\00:04:32.90
Preterism, you can tell from the
word, "pre," it often takes the
00:04:32.93\00:04:36.34
prophecies and it believes the
prophecies of Daniel, they're
00:04:36.37\00:04:39.97
all fulfilled and, you know,
the evil king was Antiochus
00:04:40.01\00:04:45.65
Epiphanes and when you get
to the prophecies of Revelation,
00:04:45.68\00:04:48.98
they think the Antichrist power
was Nero, and that all of the
00:04:49.02\00:04:52.62
prophecies of Revelation met
their fulfillment by 100 AD, and
00:04:52.65\00:04:56.49
so the preterists
say it's all in the past.
00:04:56.52\00:04:59.29
Now, they accept that, you know,
the Resurrection and the Second
00:04:59.33\00:05:02.26
Coming and these
things have not happened yet.
00:05:02.30\00:05:04.47
And then you've got futurism.
00:05:04.50\00:05:06.67
Now, I should mention,
futurism is a fairly new
00:05:06.70\00:05:09.44
interpretation prophecy.
00:05:09.47\00:05:11.87
Actually, both preterism
and futurism are less than 500
00:05:11.91\00:05:15.48
years old.
00:05:15.51\00:05:17.58
They're fairly new views
of how to interpret prophecy.
00:05:17.61\00:05:20.38
Futurism was really born
from out of the Reformation.
00:05:20.42\00:05:26.05
As the different reformers,
and I should mention that people
00:05:26.09\00:05:29.99
like Luther, Calvin,
Thomas Cranmer, John Knox, Roger
00:05:30.03\00:05:35.00
Williams, Cotton Mather,
Jonathan Edwards, John Wesley,
00:05:35.03\00:05:38.13
Spurgeon, and many more, they
believed in the historicist view
00:05:38.17\00:05:42.14
of interpretation.
00:05:42.17\00:05:44.07
But because Luther and others,
in using the historicist view,
00:05:44.11\00:05:47.84
they looked at the papacy as the
little-horn power, millions were
00:05:47.88\00:05:54.15
flocking out of Romanism
into the Reformation movement.
00:05:54.18\00:05:59.19
The Jesuits basically engaged a
couple of priests to write what
00:05:59.22\00:06:05.33
they called a
counter interpretation.
00:06:05.36\00:06:08.10
And their names
were Manuel Lacunza.
00:06:08.13\00:06:11.37
He lived actually 1731 to 1801.
00:06:11.40\00:06:15.40
Then before him
was Francisco Ribera.
00:06:15.44\00:06:18.04
He's really the main source,
a Catholic Jesuit, and he wrote
00:06:18.07\00:06:22.01
from 1537 he lived 'til 1591.
00:06:22.04\00:06:25.55
And basically, they took most
of Revelation from Revelation
00:06:25.58\00:06:30.22
chapter 4 where it says:
"I heard a trumpet and a voice
00:06:30.25\00:06:33.15
said, 'Come up hither.'"
00:06:33.19\00:06:34.96
They say that trumpet is a
secret Rapture and that's--the
00:06:34.99\00:06:37.79
people--and everything from
Revelation 4 on, they say, is in
00:06:37.83\00:06:40.80
the future.
00:06:40.83\00:06:42.86
Well, that
eliminates a lot of Revelation.
00:06:42.90\00:06:44.77
And so, now here's the
interesting part of the story.

This Jesuit interpretation
of prophecy was adopted by Darby
00:06:47.60\00:06:51.91
and then Scofield included
Darby's interpretation in the
00:06:51.94\00:06:59.78
Scofield Bible.
00:06:59.81\00:07:01.35
That really made it popular.
00:07:01.38\00:07:02.92
He included it in
his notes of revelation.
00:07:02.95\00:07:05.25
He had adopted it.
00:07:05.29\00:07:06.99
Then people like Hal Lindsey,
40 years ago, they read that and
00:07:07.02\00:07:10.39
they put it in their bestselling
books called "The Late Great
00:07:10.43\00:07:13.53
Planet Earth" and "Satan is
Alive and Well on Planet Earth."
00:07:13.56\00:07:16.36
That was read by evangelicals
everywhere and all of a sudden
00:07:16.40\00:07:19.37
you see that even Billy Graham's
preaching went from historicism
00:07:19.40\00:07:23.14
to futurism.
00:07:23.17\00:07:25.84
And it just shifted so that now,
by far, the left-behind books,
00:07:25.87\00:07:30.81
the left-behind movies,
evangelicals who haven't
00:07:30.85\00:07:34.12
understood Revelation,
they've pretty much embraced the
00:07:34.15\00:07:36.25
futuristic view of prophecy.
00:07:36.28\00:07:38.22
Jean: And we can also see that,
Pastor Doug, by a de-emphasis of
00:07:38.25\00:07:41.22
the Protestant position on,
well, the little-horn power of
00:07:41.26\00:07:45.96
Daniel chapter 7, talking
about the beast of Revelation
00:07:45.99\00:07:48.66
chapter 13.
00:07:48.70\00:07:50.60
You know, the early Reformers
all identified this as the Roman
00:07:50.63\00:07:53.77
power, the papal power, but
of course, today, even in the
00:07:53.80\00:07:57.17
evangelical world, in the
Protestant world, many people
00:07:57.21\00:07:59.87
have forgotten the roots,
the foundation, of why they
00:07:59.91\00:08:03.61
are Protestant.
00:08:03.65\00:08:05.45
But if you look at what
the Bible says, you know, and
00:08:05.48\00:08:07.38
remember we let the
Bible interpret itself.
00:08:07.42\00:08:09.22
If you look at the pattern
that's established in Scripture,
00:08:09.25\00:08:11.19
there's no room for a preterist
view or a futuristic view.
00:08:11.22\00:08:14.49
The Bible itself teaches
a historicist view of Bible
00:08:14.52\00:08:18.99
prophecy, and probably one
of the clearest foundations of
00:08:19.03\00:08:22.06
this, at least, one of the main
foundations to understanding
00:08:22.10\00:08:25.07
this, is Daniel chapter 2.
00:08:25.10\00:08:27.44
It's a passage that we know:
Nebuchadnezzar the king has a
00:08:27.47\00:08:29.60
dream and in his dream he sees
this giant image made of these
00:08:29.64\00:08:33.11
various metals.
00:08:33.14\00:08:34.98
Daniel then explains the meaning
of this dream to the king and he
00:08:35.01\00:08:38.05
uses the historicist method.
00:08:38.08\00:08:40.32
In other words, he says, "You
are the head of gold and after
00:08:40.35\00:08:42.48
you will come another kingdom,
represented by the chest and
00:08:42.52\00:08:44.69
arms of silver, belly and thighs
of brass is the third kingdom.
00:08:44.72\00:08:48.09
The legs of iron
is the fourth kingdom.
00:08:48.12\00:08:50.39
And then it talks about
the kingdom being divided up.
00:08:50.43\00:08:53.19
The feet of iron and clay, and
then of course, the stone that
00:08:53.23\00:08:55.80
comes and strikes the image.
00:08:55.83\00:08:57.67
That is the establishment of
Christ's kingdom, that is the
00:08:57.70\00:08:59.87
Second Coming.
00:08:59.90\00:09:01.70
Well, Daniel is very clear,
not only in Daniel chapter 2 but
00:09:01.74\00:09:03.61
it's repeating Daniel chapter
7 and then again in Daniel
00:09:03.64\00:09:07.58
chapter 8.
00:09:07.61\00:09:09.14
So we have three
times that Daniel himself--
00:09:09.18\00:09:10.91
Doug: And even Daniel 10
through 12 is still using the
00:09:10.95\00:09:12.31
historicist method.
00:09:12.35\00:09:13.72
Jean: So Daniel himself, he's
saying, "This is the way you
00:09:13.75\00:09:15.95
need to interpret these
symbols and prophecies."
00:09:15.98\00:09:18.55
There is no thousand-year gap
between, for example, the belly
00:09:18.59\00:09:22.56
and thighs of brass
and the legs of iron.
00:09:22.59\00:09:27.23
Matter of fact, Rome immediately
follows Greece and Greece, of
00:09:27.30\00:09:32.60
course, follows Medo-Persia,
so the gap theory or the gap
00:09:32.63\00:09:35.77
teaching which you need to apply
with a futuristic interpretation
00:09:35.80\00:09:38.57
of Bible prophecy is not
supported in the Scripture
00:09:38.61\00:09:41.91
itself, it's just not there.
00:09:41.94\00:09:44.15
Doug: Yes, Daniel gives an
unbroken panorama of history
00:09:44.18\00:09:49.25
from his time 'til the
kingdom of Christ is set up in
00:09:49.28\00:09:52.29
the earth.
00:09:52.32\00:09:54.46
And you see
that in Revelation 2.
00:09:54.49\00:09:56.06
They both use a series of
prophecies where they back up
00:09:56.09\00:09:57.53
and they retell.
00:09:57.56\00:09:59.36
But each prophecy gives--it's an
unbroken sequence and, you know,
00:09:59.39\00:10:03.67
this last week that many
futurists take--they say, "Well,
00:10:03.70\00:10:07.94
there's this last
seven years of Tribulation."
00:10:07.97\00:10:09.90
They break that off of
Daniel chapter 9, the 490-year
00:10:09.94\00:10:14.71
prophecy, and they've got it
floating away from the rest of
00:10:14.74\00:10:18.31
the prophecy and they really
can't give any reason for that,
00:10:18.35\00:10:20.95
where everything else in
the book tells us it's this
00:10:20.98\00:10:23.49
sequence, it's uninterrupted.
00:10:23.52\00:10:25.45
Jean: Yes, absolutely, and it's
important for us to remember
00:10:25.49\00:10:27.19
that because there's a lot
of confusion and all kinds of
00:10:27.22\00:10:29.89
strange interpretations of
Scripture when you take the
00:10:29.92\00:10:33.29
symbols in Revelation and
Daniel and you apply it to some
00:10:33.33\00:10:36.33
futuristic power.
00:10:36.36\00:10:38.40
It could really
represent anything.
00:10:38.43\00:10:40.44
And that's one of the dangers of
the futuristic interpretation.
00:10:40.47\00:10:43.04
It's also important for us to
know, Pastor Doug, that when we
00:10:43.07\00:10:45.71
study Bible prophecy we want
to use the historicist method
00:10:45.74\00:10:49.48
because--and that's what we find
even Daniel using, but it's also
00:10:49.51\00:10:53.18
important that we recognize that
there are certain time elements
00:10:53.21\00:10:57.29
or keys to unlock time prophecy.
00:10:57.32\00:10:59.72
And that's what's brought to
light in the next section of our
00:10:59.75\00:11:03.36
lesson but just before we do
that we also need to remember
00:11:03.39\00:11:06.49
that Bible prophecy isn't really
there for us to try and guess
00:11:06.53\00:11:10.70
what's going to happen in the
future but, rather, Jesus said,
00:11:10.73\00:11:13.37
"When these things come to
pass your faith will be," I'm
00:11:13.40\00:11:15.64
paraphrasing, "your
faith will be encouraged," in
00:11:15.67\00:11:17.91
the Scriptures.
00:11:17.94\00:11:19.31
Doug: Yes, two times there
in John 13, verse 19, and John
00:11:19.34\00:11:22.24
14:29, Jesus said, "I told
you before that when it comes to
00:11:22.28\00:11:26.55
pass then you'll know."
00:11:26.58\00:11:28.48
So how do we know the
historicist's view is the right
00:11:28.52\00:11:31.22
view, is we look
back and we see it works.
00:11:31.25\00:11:34.72
It's like my teacher used
to say, "Use the multiplication
00:11:34.76\00:11:38.69
table," and I thought, "Why?"
00:11:38.73\00:11:40.80
She said, "It works.
00:11:40.83\00:11:42.60
It's been proven."
00:11:42.63\00:11:44.43
And so the historicist view,
you can look back and say, "This
00:11:44.47\00:11:46.67
is--it all happened."
00:11:46.70\00:11:48.74
Most Adventist evangelists,
somewhere in their first few
00:11:48.77\00:11:50.97
presentations, they do Daniel
2 and the reason is it is so
00:11:51.01\00:11:53.84
effective in proving the
validity of the Bible 'cause you
00:11:53.88\00:11:57.41
can look in the history book,
you look at the Bible, you say,

"The Bible was right."
00:12:00.35\00:12:02.05
Jean: All right, well, we've
got some questions coming in.

The falling away he's talking
about is not a falling away in

that's what you read about

Antichrist power that began in a
special way in 538 or even began

during the conversion of
Constantine, where there was a

great compromise that came into
the church where they started to

co-mingle paganism with
Christianity and the religion
00:13:03.91\00:13:07.45
became
corrupted from the inside.

Jean: Of course, that's an
important theme that you find in
00:13:10.65\00:13:13.19
Daniel chapter 7, is this
falling away from the truth of
00:13:13.22\00:13:15.89
God's Word by this religious,
political power that rules for

1260 days and we'll probably
talk about that a little later.

Another question that's come
in, Pastor Doug, is "Who are the

Israelites today,
according to the Bible?"

Who are the Israelites today?

Doug: Yes, and this is a
very--it's a sensitive subject

because if you say that it's
not all literal Israel, people

accuse you of what they call
"replacement theology," meaning

there's no role for Israel,
they've all been replaced now by

the church.

We believe that the Bible
teaches if you are Christ's, you

are Abraham's seed.

Now, that means that if a Jew
does not accept Jesus, they are

not saved by virtue of
having Hebrew genetics.

Christ is, the Bible tells us,
God is not a regarder of people.

He's--looks on the heart.

He is not a Jew
which is worn outwardly.

He is a Jew
which is worn inwardly.

Now, Jew or Gentile, and even
Paul said, you know, "Salvation

comes to the Jew first and the
Gentile on those that believe."

And so, yes, we believe there's
a special place for Israel, even

in prophecy
today, as they believe.

But the Gentiles are
grafted in, Paul tells us.

We are grafted in to the
stock of Israel and it's not now
00:14:34.37\00:14:37.47
circumcision in the flesh,
it's circumcision in the heart.

So if you are Christ's, you
are able to partake of all the

promises made to Abraham.
00:14:45.51\00:14:47.58
There is a spiritual component
of the Gentiles being grafted in
00:14:47.62\00:14:51.19
as well.

Jean: And that's probably
an important point to remember.

When you're studying the book of
Revelation 'cause, Pastor Doug,

correct me if I'm wrong but
I believe in Revelation there's

only two groups of people:
you're either saved and you're

an Israelite or you're
lost and you're a Gentile.

Now, of course, Revelation
is a symbolic book and we're not

saying that, you know,
obviously, literally, you have

to be a descendant of Abraham
to be saved but spiritually

speaking, Israel are those who
receive Christ, those who have

the seal of God.
00:15:16.54\00:15:18.48
So it's a symbol
that we find in the Bible.

Doug: You know, but that--I
think people are surprised to
00:15:20.45\00:15:22.25
remember that was even
true in the Old Testament.

You know, God had people
that--He had people that loved
00:15:24.22\00:15:27.86
Him that maybe
were not part of Israel.

Jesus emphasizes that but Ruth,

represents the ten divisions of
western Rome, the ten Germanic

or barbarian tribes that carved
up the territory of western

Europe that Rome controlled.

And then it talks about a
little-horn power that would

arise after these ten horns.

So after Europe was divided up
amongst these various Germanic

kingdoms, a power would arise.

saints for 1260 years.

Now, this was a very important
prophecy, especially during the

time of the Reformation because
they identified that little-horn

power as being the papal church,
the papacy that did rise up

after the
division of western Europe.

There were three tribes: the
Ostrogoths, the Vandals, and the

Heruli, that were uprooted in
order to make way for the power

of the Pope, not only to be a
religious power but now also a

political power and we have the
establishment of the Vatican and

the papacy in 538 as a power
that could also exercise civil

authority and not
just religious power.

So the Reformers identified this
and that was a big part of the

Reformation, calling people to
a renewed commitment to the Word

of God and not the
traditions of the church.

I first started studying these

prophecies, I thought why is
it comparing these world empires

But you've got to keep in mind
that the Hebrews, it's like when

Moses told the Pharisees,
he says, "These people

are shepherds."

They had sheep and goats and
bulls and they saw that it was

often the ram with the largest
rack of horns that would rule

the roost.

And so they portrayed these
powers with the different horns.

You got the ram and the
goat that are fighting together.

So knowing that those
horns don't represent any one

particular king, but kingdoms,
and one reason you know that is

when Alexander the Great died,
he was that one notable horn,

but then his four generals,
they began four kingdoms.

It wasn't just them; it
was also their posterity.

And so it just
represents these four kingdoms.

So the little horn is not
just any one particular pope.

It's talking about, really, the
papacy, that power that there

would be ruling over church and

did arise from Rome.

It would arise amongst the ten
horns and that's the divisions

And, of course, the Vatican did
arise right in the heart of the

Roman empire.

It arose after the horns.

The papacy arose to power,
really, to the height of its

strength was 538.

It was different

It was not just a political
power or a secular power.

It was also a religious power.

It didn't have its own military
but it used the militaries of

the other nations
that it controlled.

It had a look more stout than
its fellows, meaning it would

have more power, it would
rule a much wider territory.

The amazing thing about the
Vatican or the papacy, not only

did they rule in Italy, but they
ruled in France, in Germany up

until the time of the
Reformation, even in England for

a period of time, and many of
the other, Spain, Portugal, so

the papal power controlled
secular powers and the kings

would have to get the permission
of the Pope in order for them to

get married or get divorced
or sometimes even go to war.

So it was a very powerful
entity during the Dark Ages.
