Study Hour," 00:00:37.73\00:00:40.37 coming to you here from the Amazing Facts offices 00:00:40.40\00:00:42.27 in Sacramento, California. 00:00:42.30\00:00:43.94 We'd like to welcome our online members and our other church 00:00:43.97\00:00:46.94 members that are joining us that can't actually meet with us 00:00:46.98\00:00:49.78 in person because of this virus. 00:00:49.81\00:00:51.91 We'd also like to welcome those joining us across the country 00:00:51.95\00:00:54.45 and around the world on social media. 00:00:54.48\00:00:57.52 Well, before we get to our lesson, 00:00:57.55\00:00:59.39 Pastor Doug, let's start with a word of prayer. 00:00:59.42\00:01:01.56 Dear Father, we thank You again that we have this opportunity 00:01:01.59\00:01:03.89 to open up Your Word and study a very important subject, 00:01:03.93\00:01:07.60 talking about Genesis and the beginning, creation. 00:01:07.60\00:01:10.10 Father, we ask Your blessing. 00:01:10.13\00:01:11.73 Be with us here, also those who are joining us 00:01:11.77\00:01:13.47 around the country in Jesus's name, amen. 00:01:13.50\00:01:17.17 Doug Batchelor: Amen. 00:01:17.21\00:01:18.71 Jean: Our lesson today continues in our study of, 00:01:18.74\00:01:20.81 "How to Interpret the Scripture." 00:01:20.84\00:01:22.44 Today, we're on lesson number nine, 00:01:22.48\00:01:24.05 which is entitled, "Creation: Genesis as Foundation Part Two." 00:01:24.08\00:01:28.42 Last week, we did part one, and this is sort of a build on that. 00:01:28.45\00:01:31.39 And Pastor Doug, I like our free offer that we have, 00:01:31.42\00:01:34.19 it's entitled "How Evolution Flunked the Science Test." 00:01:34.22\00:01:37.09 And this, of course, is for anyone who would call and ask. 00:01:37.13\00:01:40.10 The number is 866-788-3966, and you can ask 00:01:40.13\00:01:44.63 for offer number 169. 00:01:44.67\00:01:47.20 Or if you like, we can send you a digital copy of the book 00:01:47.24\00:01:50.81 if you would text the code SH037 to the number 40544. 00:01:50.84\00:01:57.75 You'll be able to read the book, 00:01:57.78\00:01:59.41 "How Science Flunked the Science--" 00:01:59.45\00:02:01.95 Sorry, "How Evolution Flunked the Science Test." 00:02:01.98\00:02:04.15 Well, Pastor Doug, an important lesson today. 00:02:04.99\00:02:07.92 Doug: Yes sir, we're going to be talking again 00:02:07.96\00:02:09.79 about the evidence you see in the Bible in Genesis 00:02:09.82\00:02:13.80 in particular that the world was created. 00:02:13.83\00:02:17.33 And actually, we've got Scriptures going 00:02:17.37\00:02:18.97 all through the Bible. 00:02:19.00\00:02:20.84 And we have a memory verse, and the memory verse 00:02:20.87\00:02:22.67 is Psalm 19, verse 1, "The heavens declare 00:02:22.70\00:02:25.94 the glory of God and the firmament shows His handiwork." 00:02:25.97\00:02:30.48 So, we can see the glory of God in the things that He's made. 00:02:30.51\00:02:33.88 Now, sometimes when you tell a person that you're a Christian 00:02:33.92\00:02:39.72 and that you believe the Bible is literally, 00:02:39.75\00:02:42.36 it seems like there's almost an attitude of pity that comes 00:02:42.39\00:02:48.16 from people in the world. 00:02:48.20\00:02:50.80 And I used to be this way 'cause I used to be an evolutionist. 00:02:50.83\00:02:53.94 I was not always a Christian, I was either agnostic or atheist, 00:02:53.97\00:02:57.01 and I thought to myself, "Who in the world could believe 00:02:57.04\00:03:00.74 these stories of Noah and the ark, and Adam and Eve, 00:03:00.78\00:03:05.68 and the tower of Babel?" 00:03:05.71\00:03:07.12 And I said, "These are obviously fairytales." 00:03:07.15\00:03:10.22 And it wasn't until I started reading the Bible for myself 00:03:10.25\00:03:12.75 that I realized that it really is a cohesive truth. 00:03:12.79\00:03:17.13 And then I started to evaluate the teaching of evolution, 00:03:17.16\00:03:22.06 and I started realizing evolution takes a lot more faith 00:03:22.10\00:03:26.17 to believe in than biblical creation. 00:03:26.20\00:03:29.57 The idea that you could get all of this organization and design 00:03:29.60\00:03:32.71 and interworking systems and symbiotic relationships 00:03:32.74\00:03:36.14 by accident. 00:03:36.18\00:03:38.31 And even as you listen to the evolutionists do their nature 00:03:38.35\00:03:41.18 programs on television, when they talk about 00:03:41.22\00:03:43.52 the millions and the billions of years, 00:03:43.55\00:03:45.29 they talk about the magic of mother nature. 00:03:45.32\00:03:48.39 So, they're ascribing supernatural to nature because 00:03:48.42\00:03:52.16 they say, "You know, there is some kind of magical force. 00:03:52.19\00:03:55.00 And isn't mother nature wonderful how she does 00:03:55.03\00:03:57.43 these things?" 00:03:57.47\00:03:58.77 And so, they clearly know there's some intelligence 00:03:58.80\00:04:01.34 behind creation, but they refuse to believe the biblical account. 00:04:01.37\00:04:05.11 Jean: You know, I'm reminded of watching one of those nature 00:04:05.14\00:04:07.24 programs, Pastor Doug, and the commentator was talking 00:04:07.28\00:04:09.81 about how miraculous it is that you can have life 00:04:09.84\00:04:13.11 and how you have the DNA that is so central to life, 00:04:13.15\00:04:16.99 and how the cells split and just the marvel of this, 00:04:17.02\00:04:19.52 and all of the complex design involved in nature. 00:04:19.55\00:04:23.76 And at the end of talking about this, he says, 00:04:23.79\00:04:26.16 "And how amazing, it's almost impossible 00:04:26.19\00:04:28.10 to believe that we are here, but here we are, 00:04:28.13\00:04:32.20 so it must've happened." 00:04:32.23\00:04:34.40 So, the whole idea of God is just pushed out of the minds 00:04:34.44\00:04:37.14 because people are unwilling to acknowledge God. 00:04:37.17\00:04:41.24 Because if you acknowledge God as the Creator, 00:04:41.28\00:04:43.38 well, then also there is a responsibility 00:04:43.41\00:04:45.25 that we have towards Him as our Creator. 00:04:45.28\00:04:48.35 Doug: Yeah, there really is an all out effort in much 00:04:48.38\00:04:53.15 of modern science today to expunge anything that smacks 00:04:53.19\00:04:59.76 of the religious or the supernatural in creation, 00:04:59.79\00:05:04.40 even though it is so obvious all around us that something 00:05:04.43\00:05:08.54 like that happened. 00:05:08.57\00:05:10.17 But you know, it notes in the lesson that many 00:05:10.21\00:05:14.21 of the greatest scientists in history were believers in God. 00:05:14.24\00:05:19.41 And you got Gregor Mendel, who of course developed 00:05:19.45\00:05:23.28 the theory of genetics. 00:05:23.32\00:05:25.69 Arthur Compton, Isaac Newton, George Washington Carver, 00:05:25.72\00:05:30.19 Blaise Pascal, Samuel Morse, the Wright Brothers, 00:05:30.23\00:05:34.36 Michael Faraday, and I could go on and on talking 00:05:34.40\00:05:36.93 about the great scientists and inventors, and they said, 00:05:36.97\00:05:39.37 "Oh, absolutely there has to be a God." 00:05:39.40\00:05:41.60 And so, it's really not fair that much of the educational 00:05:41.64\00:05:45.87 world today, they alienate or they push the outside 00:05:45.91\00:05:50.65 or the fringe. 00:05:50.68\00:05:52.25 Any scientist, they say, "We're not going to let you 00:05:52.28\00:05:54.75 in our circle. 00:05:54.78\00:05:56.12 You can't teach at our universities." 00:05:56.15\00:05:57.82 If you say you believe in biblical creation, 00:05:57.85\00:06:00.26 you're blackballed. 00:06:00.29\00:06:02.46 And it's--there's an obvious effort on the part. 00:06:02.49\00:06:07.10 And the sad thing is some of these institutions 00:06:07.13\00:06:09.03 like Oxford and Yale and Harvard, 00:06:09.06\00:06:12.60 they began as Christian institutions, 00:06:12.63\00:06:16.24 but something happened along the way. 00:06:16.27\00:06:18.87 With Darwin and "The Origin of Species," there was a shift. 00:06:18.91\00:06:22.58 And with the French Revolution, they said, 00:06:22.61\00:06:24.58 "We're in the age of reason now." 00:06:24.61\00:06:26.58 Even though the French Revolution sort of turned 00:06:26.61\00:06:28.35 into bloodshed and imploded, the idea age of reason now 00:06:28.38\00:06:33.02 sort of took over. 00:06:33.05\00:06:34.96 Jean: Right. 00:06:34.99\00:06:36.56 Well, we do have questions that are coming in, 00:06:36.59\00:06:37.89 and we want to remind you if you have a question related 00:06:37.93\00:06:39.46 to creation or maybe what does the Bible say about origins, 00:06:39.49\00:06:43.43 we'd be happy to take a look at that. 00:06:43.47\00:06:45.43 And if you have a question, just type it there on Facebook 00:06:45.47\00:06:47.77 in the comment section. 00:06:47.80\00:06:49.30 Pastor Doug, we have Franklin, who's asking, 00:06:49.34\00:06:51.11 "Was Eve created on the same day that Adam was created?" 00:06:51.14\00:06:56.24 Doug: Yes. 00:06:56.28\00:06:57.71 Sometimes it confuses people 'cause it talks about Adam 00:06:57.75\00:06:59.45 being made in chapter 1. 00:06:59.48\00:07:02.15 And then later, it goes back and it talks about 00:07:02.18\00:07:04.65 the details of Eve's creation. 00:07:04.69\00:07:07.29 God made all of His creatures in the first six days 00:07:07.32\00:07:10.73 male and female. 00:07:10.76\00:07:12.56 It talks about the Sabbath in Genesis chapter 2, 00:07:12.59\00:07:15.56 but then it backs up and it explains in detail 00:07:15.60\00:07:18.07 how God created Eve. 00:07:18.10\00:07:20.44 Keep in mind that in much of the Bible, 00:07:20.47\00:07:22.84 God begins with headlines, then He backs up 00:07:22.87\00:07:25.81 and He gives the fine print. 00:07:25.84\00:07:27.54 We do this in newspapers all the time. 00:07:27.58\00:07:29.01 You give the big headline story, sometimes the headline will 00:07:29.04\00:07:31.15 contain some of the main story, but then they back up 00:07:31.18\00:07:35.58 and give you the details in the fine print. 00:07:35.62\00:07:37.92 Headline, in the beginning God created the heavens 00:07:37.95\00:07:40.12 and the earth. 00:07:40.16\00:07:41.46 Details, you go through the first six days. 00:07:41.49\00:07:44.19 Then it gives you more details of the sixth day, when God-- 00:07:44.23\00:07:48.23 why God came about to make Eve. 00:07:48.26\00:07:52.13 Says, you know, Adam named the animals. 00:07:52.17\00:07:53.94 And someone thinks, "How can he name all the millions of species 00:07:53.97\00:07:56.34 and categories of animals in one day? 00:07:56.37\00:07:58.81 That would take more than a day." 00:07:58.84\00:08:00.44 I'm sure he just named the main categories of them. 00:08:00.48\00:08:03.21 And he noticed that the bull had the cow 00:08:03.24\00:08:06.78 and the goose had the-- is it the gander? 00:08:06.82\00:08:11.05 And the rooster had his chicken, and something was 00:08:11.09\00:08:14.66 missing in his life. 00:08:14.69\00:08:16.29 And God wanted him to notice that vacuum so that 00:08:16.32\00:08:19.03 he would be especially excited when He filled it. 00:08:19.06\00:08:21.56 But that was still all on the sixth day. 00:08:21.60\00:08:24.07 Jean: All right, well, then one of the question 00:08:24.10\00:08:25.63 that people raise when they talk about creationists, 00:08:25.67\00:08:28.94 they say, "Well, you know, they believe myths as far as origin." 00:08:28.97\00:08:32.17 And they quote, for example and say, 00:08:32.21\00:08:34.28 'Don't you believe the earth is flat? 00:08:34.31\00:08:37.08 Doesn't the Bible teach flat earth?'" 00:08:37.11\00:08:39.28 And then they might even quote a verse 00:08:39.31\00:08:40.98 in Revelation chapter 1, verse-- 00:08:41.02\00:08:43.12 or Revelation chapter 7, verse 1 that talks about 00:08:43.15\00:08:45.99 the four angels holding the four winds of the earth. 00:08:46.02\00:08:49.26 They say, "There you go, four corners of the earth. 00:08:49.29\00:08:51.49 Would the earth be flat?" 00:08:51.53\00:08:53.83 Doug: Well, we even use this kind of phraseology today. 00:08:53.86\00:08:55.90 I think Jesus used the same wording in Matthew 24 talking 00:08:55.93\00:08:59.10 about the Second Coming, how his angels would go 00:08:59.13\00:09:02.17 to collect the redeemed. 00:09:02.20\00:09:03.97 Says, "He'll send his angels with the sound of a trumpet. 00:09:04.01\00:09:06.31 They will gather together His elect from the four winds, 00:09:06.34\00:09:10.11 from one end of heaven to the other." 00:09:10.15\00:09:11.88 The four winds being-- and it mentions 00:09:11.91\00:09:13.68 the four winds also in Revelation 7. 00:09:13.72\00:09:15.62 It's just talking about four corners of the earth. 00:09:15.65\00:09:18.99 We use that language today. 00:09:19.02\00:09:21.62 We'll say, you know, 00:09:21.66\00:09:23.02 "Somebody went to the four corners of the earth." 00:09:23.06\00:09:24.43 Well, we don't believe earth has corners. 00:09:24.46\00:09:26.76 We use a lot of metaphors when we talk about the world, 00:09:26.80\00:09:29.63 that doesn't mean that we take them literally. 00:09:29.66\00:09:32.40 In the Bible, it says, "When the sun went down," 00:09:32.43\00:09:35.80 and you got an example here. 00:09:35.84\00:09:37.37 Oh, I forget where I put it. 00:09:37.41\00:09:41.14 It talks about the sun going down, 00:09:41.18\00:09:43.48 but we don't believe that the sun goes down or the sun rises, 00:09:43.51\00:09:48.35 we know the earth is turning. 00:09:48.38\00:09:50.22 We might say that, you know, we feel something in our heart. 00:09:50.25\00:09:54.02 Well, we may not really feel it in the pump, 00:09:54.06\00:09:57.09 you're feeling it in your mind, but we use these metaphors. 00:09:57.13\00:09:59.73 God says, "Write My Word in your heart." 00:09:59.76\00:10:01.70 David said, "What have these sheep done? 00:10:01.73\00:10:04.60 Don't punish these sheep." 00:10:04.63\00:10:05.93 He's talking about the people. 00:10:05.97\00:10:07.27 Well, David knew it's a metaphor for people. 00:10:07.30\00:10:08.64 Everyone reading it knows it, so yeah, 00:10:08.67\00:10:10.34 the Bible used common metaphors, it doesn't mean that 00:10:10.37\00:10:12.81 they scientifically believed that the earth had four square, 00:10:12.84\00:10:16.08 you know, big flat piece of land with four squares on it. 00:10:16.11\00:10:19.68 Jean: Well, of course, when it talks about 00:10:19.71\00:10:21.38 the four winds of heaven, 00:10:21.42\00:10:22.75 we're not talking about four corners of a flat earth. 00:10:22.78\00:10:26.15 Rather we're talking about the four points of the compass. 00:10:26.19\00:10:28.22 And of course, they were aware of that, 00:10:28.26\00:10:29.66 north, south, east, and west. 00:10:29.69\00:10:31.33 And that's four divisions of the earth. 00:10:31.36\00:10:33.73 You can say, "I'm going to the east, or the west, 00:10:33.76\00:10:35.43 the north, or the south." 00:10:35.46\00:10:36.77 And so, when the Bible speaks of the four winds 00:10:36.80\00:10:38.23 or the four corners, it's really just talking about 00:10:38.27\00:10:40.24 the four points of the compass, and it's talking about it 00:10:40.27\00:10:42.94 being universal. 00:10:42.97\00:10:44.51 You know, it's interesting in Daniel, 00:10:44.54\00:10:46.37 you read about a wind that strove upon the great sea, 00:10:46.41\00:10:49.48 and these four creatures came up. 00:10:49.51\00:10:51.15 Well, these creatures, these beasts represent nations, 00:10:51.18\00:10:53.55 the winds striving on the great sea. 00:10:53.58\00:10:55.68 These four winds represent the four points of the compass. 00:10:55.72\00:10:57.92 So, there are some symbolism that we find in the Bible, 00:10:57.95\00:11:01.96 and we need to study it and understand it 00:11:01.99\00:11:04.66 as to what it means, this symbolic application. 00:11:04.69\00:11:07.10 Doug: Even when you talk about the four winds, 00:11:07.13\00:11:08.90 there's supernatural wisdom there. 00:11:08.93\00:11:10.77 The Bible says, "God will separate us 00:11:10.80\00:11:13.44 from our sins as far as the east is from the west." 00:11:13.47\00:11:17.54 Well, they must've known that the earth revolves east to west, 00:11:17.57\00:11:21.31 and there is no end to east and west. 00:11:21.34\00:11:22.94 And the Bible talks about the king of the north 00:11:22.98\00:11:24.35 and the king of the south. 00:11:24.38\00:11:25.68 There is a place where they have their thrones. 00:11:25.71\00:11:27.68 There's an end to the North Pole, 00:11:27.72\00:11:29.35 there's an end to the South Pole. 00:11:29.38\00:11:30.82 God did not say, "I'm going to separate your sins 00:11:30.85\00:11:32.42 as far as the north is from the south," 00:11:32.45\00:11:34.36 because that would've had a limit. 00:11:34.39\00:11:36.86 But God said, "I'm separating your sins as far as 00:11:36.89\00:11:39.33 the east is to the west." 00:11:39.36\00:11:40.73 You can go east forever and ever and never get to east. 00:11:40.76\00:11:43.43 But if you go north, you will eventually get 00:11:43.47\00:11:44.77 to the North Pole. 00:11:44.80\00:11:46.10 And if you take another step, you start hitting south. 00:11:46.13\00:11:48.14 So, even in the Bible, it makes a distinction 00:11:48.17\00:11:51.24 between north and south and east and west that we recognize 00:11:51.27\00:11:54.34 in the rotation of the earth. 00:11:54.38\00:11:56.18 Jean: Now, if you ask a Bible scholar, 00:11:56.21\00:11:58.18 "What was the oldest book that we have in the Bible?" 00:11:58.21\00:12:01.32 you know, we think Genesis, but there could be a book 00:12:01.35\00:12:04.35 that was written by Moses, we believe, but was actually 00:12:04.39\00:12:07.32 older than the book of Genesis, possibly the book of Job. 00:12:07.36\00:12:11.59 And it is interesting in the book of Job, 00:12:11.63\00:12:13.76 we do find some statements that is made that show us that there 00:12:13.80\00:12:18.17 is far more to an understanding of the earth than is credited 00:12:18.20\00:12:23.71 to people living back in those days. 00:12:23.74\00:12:26.34 Doug: Yeah, you've got a couple of examples. 00:12:26.37\00:12:28.51 You can look, for instance, in Job chapter 26, verse 10, 00:12:28.54\00:12:31.98 "He drew a circle on the horizon on the face of the waters." 00:12:32.01\00:12:36.38 I've been to sea many times, I've been way out in the middle 00:12:36.42\00:12:39.85 of the ocean, and you can see, especially if you have 00:12:39.89\00:12:42.29 a high crow's nest, you can see the circle of the earth. 00:12:42.32\00:12:47.03 And they noticed that when tall ships were sailing away, 00:12:47.03\00:12:51.00 it seemed like they were shrinking as they went 00:12:51.03\00:12:54.17 around the curvature. 00:12:54.20\00:12:56.27 If you had good eyes, you could spot that on a clear day, 00:12:56.30\00:12:58.94 on a flat sea. 00:12:58.97\00:13:00.54 And now there are people, and I don't want to be unkind, 00:13:00.58\00:13:04.21 but there are people who you would normally think are normal, 00:13:04.25\00:13:06.75 educated people, amazingly enough even today 00:13:06.78\00:13:08.88 that believe the earth is flat. 00:13:08.92\00:13:11.75 And I don't want to be unkind, but it is not, it is round. 00:13:11.79\00:13:17.46 And I've been up in my dad's Learjet years ago. 00:13:17.49\00:13:22.63 The Learjet flies higher than a typical commercial jet. 00:13:22.66\00:13:25.33 And when you're at 45,000 feet, you can see, 00:13:25.37\00:13:28.04 clearly see the curve of the earth. 00:13:28.07\00:13:30.51 It is not a big conspiracy of NASA and all the governments 00:13:30.54\00:13:33.31 and pilots of the world to try to keep people in darkness 00:13:33.34\00:13:36.18 about the earth being flat. 00:13:36.21\00:13:37.65 I don't know what the advantage would be. 00:13:37.68\00:13:39.48 But the earth is round. 00:13:39.51\00:13:40.88 You can also read in Job 26:7, 00:13:40.92\00:13:45.25 "He stretches out the earth over empty space. 00:13:45.29\00:13:47.99 He hangs it upon nothing." 00:13:48.02\00:13:50.09 Well, all of the ancient myths said, 00:13:50.13\00:13:52.66 "Well, the earth is on the back of the tortoise 00:13:52.69\00:13:55.23 or it's on the shoulders of Atlas." 00:13:55.26\00:13:57.30 And they had all these myths that the earth was sitting 00:13:57.33\00:14:00.60 on something, but the Bible says, 00:14:00.64\00:14:02.34 "The earth is hung upon nothing." 00:14:02.37\00:14:04.04 It's out in space, and they looked up 00:14:04.07\00:14:05.61 just as they saw the planets hanging upon nothing. 00:14:05.64\00:14:07.98 And then you can also read in Isaiah chapter 40, verse 22, 00:14:08.01\00:14:12.75 "Who sits above the circle of the earth," speaking of God. 00:14:12.78\00:14:16.89 "And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers who stretches out 00:14:16.92\00:14:19.32 the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out 00:14:19.35\00:14:22.16 like a tent to dwell in." 00:14:22.19\00:14:23.73 There's some more metaphors. 00:14:23.76\00:14:25.06 But they did use the metaphor of a circle. 00:14:25.09\00:14:26.80 Jean: You know, I find that verse interesting. 00:14:26.83\00:14:28.36 Isaiah 40, verse 22 specifically says, 00:14:28.40\00:14:30.50 "The circle of the earth." 00:14:30.53\00:14:32.50 You know, I had an experience, Pastor Doug. 00:14:32.53\00:14:34.14 There is a gentleman that we played racquetball with, 00:14:34.17\00:14:36.74 and he's a Muslim. 00:14:36.77\00:14:38.54 And I was talking to him, I asked him 00:14:38.57\00:14:40.44 if he's ever studied the Bible before. 00:14:40.48\00:14:42.11 He said no. 00:14:42.14\00:14:43.45 He asked me if I ever studied the Koran, 00:14:43.48\00:14:44.78 I said no. 00:14:44.81\00:14:46.11 He said, "Well, I'll tell you what. 00:14:46.15\00:14:47.45 If you study the Koran with me for half an hour, 00:14:47.48\00:14:49.62 then we'll study the Bible together for half an hour." 00:14:49.65\00:14:52.29 I said, "Okay, that's fair." 00:14:52.32\00:14:53.69 So, in our Bible study, we'd get together, 00:14:53.72\00:14:55.72 and we'd take a look at different passages in the Koran, 00:14:55.76\00:14:57.89 and then we look at passage in the Bible. 00:14:57.93\00:14:59.46 And I said, "Well, one of the things we need to do 00:14:59.49\00:15:00.90 is establish the trustworthiness of the Scriptures. 00:15:00.93\00:15:04.57 Is there enough internal evidence in the Koran 00:15:04.60\00:15:08.14 to prove that it is trustworthy?" 00:15:08.17\00:15:10.07 And I spoke about prophecy in the Bible, and so on. 00:15:10.11\00:15:12.74 He said, "Oh yeah, you can trust the Koran." 00:15:12.77\00:15:14.51 I said, "Why is that?" 00:15:14.54\00:15:15.84 He says, "Well, here it is." 00:15:15.88\00:15:17.18 And he found a verse that says in the Koran that the earth 00:15:17.21\00:15:19.48 is shaped like an egg. 00:15:19.51\00:15:21.38 And he says, "Well, back when the Koran was written, 00:15:21.42\00:15:23.42 people didn't know that the earth was round." 00:15:23.45\00:15:25.59 Well, I couldn't help but turn to this verse 00:15:25.62\00:15:27.82 in Isaiah chapter 40, verse 22, where it says, 00:15:27.86\00:15:30.26 "He sits above the circle of the earth." 00:15:30.29\00:15:32.43 And I asked him, "Does the earth look more like an egg 00:15:32.46\00:15:34.83 or does it look more like a circle?" 00:15:34.86\00:15:37.67 He smiled and said, "Well, I guess it is more of a circle." 00:15:37.70\00:15:40.07 And I said, "Well, you find this verse in Isaiah long 00:15:40.10\00:15:42.77 before the Koran was ever written." 00:15:42.80\00:15:45.44 So, if you look at the evidence in the Word of God, 00:15:45.47\00:15:48.24 it helps to establish its inspiration. 00:15:48.28\00:15:50.48 Something very practical, another one that we have 00:15:50.51\00:15:53.42 in Job chapter 28, verse 25, he talks about 00:15:53.45\00:15:56.42 the wind having weight. 00:15:56.45\00:15:58.59 And of course, that's something that it's new to science 00:15:58.62\00:16:01.56 relatively speaking. 00:16:01.59\00:16:03.93 People back 1,000, 2,000 years ago 00:16:03.96\00:16:05.86 didn't understand the significance 00:16:05.89\00:16:07.36 of the weight of the air. 00:16:07.40\00:16:10.00 Doug: I don't think it was until the 18th or 19th century 00:16:10.03\00:16:12.77 that they discovered that, you know, air pressure, 00:16:12.80\00:16:16.14 that weight actually-- wind actually has 00:16:16.17\00:16:19.24 or air has weight to it. 00:16:19.27\00:16:21.34 And yet it says here that way back in the book of Job, 00:16:21.38\00:16:24.28 probably the oldest book in the Bible, 00:16:24.31\00:16:26.15 the winds had weight. 00:16:26.18\00:16:28.02 So, throughout the Bible, you can see 00:16:28.05\00:16:30.05 that there are metaphors. 00:16:30.09\00:16:31.82 Jesus says, for instance, in Matthew 15, 00:16:31.85\00:16:34.06 "For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, 00:16:34.09\00:16:36.96 adulteries, fornications, theft out of the heart." 00:16:36.99\00:16:40.56 He's talking about the mind, doesn't come out of the pump. 00:16:40.60\00:16:42.96 And they knew that in the Bible because they knew if he got hit 00:16:43.00\00:16:45.90 on the head, you didn't think clearly, 00:16:45.93\00:16:47.87 you didn't think with your pump, you thought with your brain. 00:16:47.90\00:16:51.24 But it still says, "Hide thy Word in your heart." 00:16:51.27\00:16:54.51 And then it says, "As a man thinketh in his heart." 00:16:54.54\00:16:56.61 And so, just because the Bible uses metaphors, 00:16:56.64\00:16:58.71 it's a very scientific book. 00:16:58.75\00:17:02.42 Look at all the sanitation laws. 00:17:02.45\00:17:05.29 You know, the way they brought many of the plagues, 00:17:05.32\00:17:07.82 ancient pandemics to a halt is by following 00:17:07.86\00:17:10.83 the sanitation laws. 00:17:10.86\00:17:12.43 And I don't think we talked about this last week, 00:17:12.46\00:17:14.20 but when they had the 1918 and 1919 Spanish Flu 00:17:14.23\00:17:19.60 during the part of the time that it went through Europe, 00:17:19.63\00:17:22.40 they discovered a lot of the Jewish communities 00:17:22.44\00:17:24.57 were not infected because they were practicing the laws 00:17:24.61\00:17:27.71 of sanitation and contagion that are found in Leviticus. 00:17:27.74\00:17:31.55 So, it's still a good scientific book. 00:17:31.58\00:17:34.12 Jean: All right, Pastor Doug, we're getting a lot of questions 00:17:34.15\00:17:36.18 coming in from Facebook, and this is a good question. 00:17:36.22\00:17:38.39 It says, "How did people spread all across the world 00:17:38.42\00:17:42.96 after the tower of Babel?" 00:17:42.99\00:17:47.10 Doug: Well, when you read in Genesis chapter 11, 00:17:47.13\00:17:49.70 it tells us that all the world was of one language 00:17:49.73\00:17:52.90 and one people, and they were defying the command of God 00:17:52.93\00:17:57.57 to go and scatter, and be fruitful, and fill the earth. 00:17:57.61\00:18:00.41 They thought, "Well, we need to stick together." 00:18:00.44\00:18:02.24 And probably some of the leaders thought, 00:18:02.28\00:18:04.28 "We'll have more power if we have more people 00:18:04.31\00:18:06.01 who can serve us." 00:18:06.05\00:18:07.85 And so, they were defying the command of God. 00:18:07.88\00:18:09.72 They also did not trust God would not destroy 00:18:09.75\00:18:11.92 the world with a flood. 00:18:11.95\00:18:13.76 So, they were building this tower, 00:18:13.79\00:18:15.69 Tower of Babel for the glory of man. 00:18:15.72\00:18:17.56 And God confused their languages, 00:18:17.59\00:18:19.39 they could not communicate, and the work descended 00:18:19.43\00:18:22.50 in strife and bloodshed. 00:18:22.53\00:18:24.13 And those that could communicate kind of broke off in different 00:18:24.17\00:18:27.00 bands, and they began to scatter and spread out 00:18:27.04\00:18:29.60 as God has told them. 00:18:29.64\00:18:31.51 And they went to the different corners of the earth. 00:18:31.54\00:18:34.81 You know, one of the reasons we believe the Bible is true 00:18:34.84\00:18:37.21 is actually linguistics. 00:18:37.25\00:18:39.68 Because those who study the languages of the world can track 00:18:39.71\00:18:42.68 the migration of man around the planet through languages. 00:18:42.72\00:18:48.06 There are clearly similarities between the languages 00:18:48.09\00:18:50.33 of the Native American Indians with one another, 00:18:50.36\00:18:53.46 and the DNA connects them with Mongolia, 00:18:53.50\00:18:57.43 and they find links in the language 00:18:57.47\00:18:58.97 with the people of Mongolia. 00:18:59.00\00:19:00.70 And you just wrap around the world and this is true 00:19:00.74\00:19:03.51 in Africa, the different African tribes maybe with the exception 00:19:03.54\00:19:06.61 of the bushmen, they have their similarities 00:19:06.64\00:19:08.91 in their pronunciation and their languages. 00:19:08.94\00:19:11.25 And the same thing, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, 00:19:11.28\00:19:13.95 they can sort of understand each other. 00:19:13.98\00:19:15.78 So, they track the migration of languages around the world 00:19:15.82\00:19:18.52 and they can also prove that we all came from common ancestors. 00:19:18.55\00:19:21.79 Jean: Another question that we have, 00:19:21.82\00:19:23.53 "When were the dinosaurs on the earth, 00:19:23.56\00:19:26.39 and what about the ice age?" 00:19:26.43\00:19:29.80 Doug: All right, well, dinosaurs is a word, 00:19:29.83\00:19:32.47 "thunder lizards" that we talk about. 00:19:32.50\00:19:35.17 They were large reptiles and that are extinct, 00:19:35.20\00:19:38.74 and we have large reptiles today. 00:19:38.77\00:19:40.91 You know, there's certain iguanas and there's Komodo 00:19:40.94\00:19:43.35 dragons and--but everything was much bigger before the flood. 00:19:43.38\00:19:48.98 They not only had reptiles that were enormous 00:19:49.02\00:19:51.82 and things probably lived longer. 00:19:51.85\00:19:53.82 Humans lived longer, why would we not think the animals lived 00:19:53.86\00:19:56.09 much longer back then? 00:19:56.12\00:19:57.76 The oxygen levels in the environment was much better 00:19:57.79\00:20:01.03 and everything lived longer. 00:20:01.06\00:20:03.16 They had--they got skeletons of beaver that are 13 feet tall. 00:20:03.20\00:20:08.84 How would you like to run into a 13-foot tall beaver? 00:20:08.87\00:20:10.94 They got these giant sloth skeletons. 00:20:10.97\00:20:13.04 Again, they're like 9 or 13 feet tall. 00:20:13.07\00:20:15.81 The mastodons and the wooly mammoths, 00:20:15.84\00:20:18.21 much bigger than the elephants today. 00:20:18.25\00:20:20.72 And so mammals, reptiles, they were all much bigger. 00:20:20.75\00:20:24.49 After the environment changed, many of them just did not grow. 00:20:24.52\00:20:28.79 Many of them were rendered extinct. 00:20:28.82\00:20:31.19 You can read there, it says, "Nimrod was a mighty hunter." 00:20:31.23\00:20:34.66 Mighty hunters don't hunt mice. 00:20:34.73\00:20:36.97 He probably went after some of these big creatures, 00:20:37.00\00:20:39.23 and they rendered them extinct through hunting them all done, 00:20:39.27\00:20:42.94 making a reputation. 00:20:42.97\00:20:44.54 So, after the flood, some of the bigger dinosaurs 00:20:44.57\00:20:47.61 or those who would be a threat, they didn't have a chance 00:20:47.64\00:20:50.98 to live as long and get as big, and they died, 00:20:51.01\00:20:53.72 and the big ones died off in the flood. 00:20:53.75\00:20:56.08 Jean: What about the ice age? When did that occur? 00:20:56.12\00:20:58.29 Doug: Well, there's a lot of changes in the environment 00:20:58.32\00:21:00.72 shortly after the flood. 00:21:00.76\00:21:02.22 I mean, you can even read where it says, 00:21:02.26\00:21:03.69 "God made a mighty wind to blow." 00:21:03.73\00:21:06.19 And then the Bible talks about in the days of Peleg, 00:21:06.23\00:21:08.73 the earth was divided. 00:21:08.76\00:21:10.50 We don't know if that means the earth was separated 00:21:10.53\00:21:12.47 by the tribes or there was still tectonic shifting happening 00:21:12.50\00:21:16.20 at that time and volcanoes. 00:21:16.24\00:21:18.34 And I think that a lot of changes were happening 00:21:18.37\00:21:22.48 after the flood. 00:21:22.51\00:21:24.41 Probably the ice age came shortly after that. 00:21:24.45\00:21:27.58 And it did not last thousands of years, 00:21:27.62\00:21:30.52 it all happened rather quickly. 00:21:30.55\00:21:32.45 Jean: Okay, now something else interesting is, 00:21:32.49\00:21:34.06 you can study different cultures around the world. 00:21:34.09\00:21:36.32 And just like you mentioned, there's a similarity 00:21:36.36\00:21:38.19 in language. 00:21:38.23\00:21:39.53 A lot of the cultures have a similarity 00:21:39.56\00:21:41.36 in origins or creation. 00:21:41.40\00:21:44.40 So, you look at some of the stories that are out there, 00:21:44.43\00:21:46.74 there are some similarities even with the biblical account 00:21:46.77\00:21:49.80 that we read in Genesis with some of these legends 00:21:49.84\00:21:52.41 or these pagan ideas as to how we got to the earth. 00:21:52.44\00:21:55.94 Doug: Yeah, and what the skeptics like to say is Moses 00:21:55.98\00:21:59.85 was just picking up some of the local legends and modified them, 00:21:59.88\00:22:03.75 or they changed for Hebrews and they put them in there. 00:22:03.79\00:22:06.15 But while there are similarities, for example, 00:22:06.19\00:22:08.76 you got Adam and Eve, and Eve eats the forbidden tree, 00:22:08.79\00:22:12.33 and all this evil comes into the world. 00:22:12.36\00:22:14.10 Well, the Greeks had the story of Pandora's box. 00:22:14.10\00:22:17.90 I think I got some different excerpts of these. 00:22:17.93\00:22:20.24 In Pandora's box, you've got the first woman made from clay, 00:22:20.27\00:22:23.07 that's not quite right according to the Bible. 00:22:23.10\00:22:26.44 The gods gave her a box or jar, told her not to open it. 00:22:26.47\00:22:29.31 Well, it was the fruit. 00:22:29.34\00:22:31.35 And the tree you should not eat from. 00:22:31.38\00:22:33.58 Pandora was trying to tame her curiosity, but in the end, 00:22:33.62\00:22:36.72 she could not hold herself anymore. 00:22:36.75\00:22:38.52 She opened the box and all of the illness, 00:22:38.55\00:22:40.52 hardship that the gods had hidden in the box 00:22:40.56\00:22:42.79 started coming out. 00:22:42.82\00:22:44.53 Well, when we disobeyed, the devil moved into the world. 00:22:44.56\00:22:46.93 It's a very different story. 00:22:46.96\00:22:48.80 The sophistication and the spirituality 00:22:48.83\00:22:50.90 and the reality of God's version makes a lot more sense. 00:22:50.93\00:22:54.74 The Greeks had a flood story. 00:22:54.77\00:22:57.04 And when Zeus, the king of the gods, 00:22:57.07\00:22:59.61 resolved to destroy all humanity by a flood, 00:22:59.64\00:23:01.88 Deucalion constructed an ark, which according to one version 00:23:01.91\00:23:06.18 he and his wife rode out the flood and landed 00:23:06.21\00:23:08.48 on Mount Parnassus according to the flood story found first 00:23:08.52\00:23:14.46 in the Roman poet Ovid's "Metamorphoses" book one. 00:23:14.49\00:23:17.69 And then they offered a sacrifice. 00:23:17.73\00:23:19.69 You've got man and woman survive, 00:23:19.73\00:23:21.86 the gods are angry, they offer sacrifice. 00:23:21.90\00:23:24.93 Well, it's similar to the story of Noah. 00:23:24.97\00:23:27.17 Then you got Plato writing about Atlantis, 00:23:27.20\00:23:30.34 where you've got these super people. 00:23:30.37\00:23:32.04 Well, before the flood, they were bigger, stronger, 00:23:32.07\00:23:33.84 they live longer, they had probably more they could do. 00:23:33.88\00:23:37.05 They lived in a paradise, but--and they were once noble 00:23:37.08\00:23:40.48 and moral people, as Adam and Eve and the children of Seth. 00:23:40.52\00:23:45.49 But when they began to intermarry with Cain, 00:23:45.52\00:23:47.29 the whole world became corrupt. 00:23:47.32\00:23:49.62 This is similar to the story of Plato. 00:23:49.66\00:23:51.36 And the gods became angry because the people 00:23:51.39\00:23:54.23 were morally bankrupt. 00:23:54.30\00:23:55.83 And as a punishment, there was a great cataclysm 00:23:55.86\00:23:59.37 and they were swallowed up in the ocean. 00:23:59.40\00:24:02.10 You get your flood story there. 00:24:02.14\00:24:03.87 One of the more interesting ancient myths that sounds 00:24:03.91\00:24:06.31 very biblical is the Hawaiian's version, 00:24:06.34\00:24:08.71 it stayed pretty close to the true. 00:24:08.74\00:24:10.98 There was this man named Nui instead of Noah, 00:24:11.01\00:24:14.78 who built an ark, he built a big boat, 00:24:14.82\00:24:17.82 and he escaped the great flood. 00:24:17.85\00:24:20.29 And he landed his vessel on top of Mauna Kea on the Big Island. 00:24:20.32\00:24:24.73 Nui mistakenly thought that he had-- 00:24:24.76\00:24:26.96 was on the moon and he made sacrifices to it. 00:24:27.00\00:24:29.23 Kane the creator god descended on the earth in a rainbow 00:24:29.26\00:24:33.57 and explained Nui's mistake. 00:24:33.60\00:24:36.14 So, you got the sacrifice, the rainbow, the boat, 00:24:36.17\00:24:39.57 the flood, the name. 00:24:39.61\00:24:41.24 Jean: The mountain. 00:24:41.28\00:24:42.68 Doug: And the mountain, yeah. 00:24:42.71\00:24:44.05 It's all very interesting that many of these-- 00:24:44.08\00:24:46.08 and the American Indians, I used to work on the reservation, 00:24:46.11\00:24:48.55 very similar story about the gods were angry 00:24:48.58\00:24:51.45 with the wickedness of man, washed the world with the flood, 00:24:51.49\00:24:53.49 and so--and then, even the Mesopotamians, 00:24:53.52\00:24:57.63 they had the epic of Gilgamesh, their version of it. 00:24:57.66\00:25:01.53 But you know, it's a lot more bizarre, 00:25:01.56\00:25:05.80 less believable than the Bible version. 00:25:05.83\00:25:08.27 Jean: All right, so we do find a number of stories in different 00:25:08.30\00:25:10.91 cultures, myths, but the more accurate or the most accurate 00:25:10.94\00:25:14.51 description of what happened is found in Genesis. 00:25:14.54\00:25:17.81 Doug: Yeah. 00:25:17.85\00:25:19.28 Jean: It is inspired counsel. 00:25:19.31\00:25:20.68 It is clear, it is biblical, it makes sense, it fits in. 00:25:20.72\00:25:23.05 A question that's coming, Pastor Doug, 00:25:23.08\00:25:25.39 is does the Bible mention anything about dinosaurs? 00:25:25.42\00:25:28.56 And if so, where? 00:25:28.59\00:25:30.43 Doug: Well, the closest thing I think we can get to is, 00:25:30.46\00:25:33.19 you've got--well, there's verses about the behemoth. 00:25:33.23\00:25:37.10 And then you've got the leviathan. 00:25:37.13\00:25:39.60 And leviathan seems like a great dragon. 00:25:39.63\00:25:42.27 And some believe it's a metaphor for the devil. 00:25:42.30\00:25:44.97 I'm inclined to believe that in Job, 00:25:45.01\00:25:46.78 I think leviathan's a metaphor for the devil. 00:25:46.81\00:25:48.74 But they probably did recognize they were great dragons. 00:25:48.78\00:25:52.41 Something else that's interesting, 00:25:52.45\00:25:53.98 Pastor Ross, is we know from the fossil record there were 00:25:54.02\00:25:56.85 some of these enormous flying reptiles. 00:25:56.89\00:25:59.52 And one of them, and I can't remember the name of this, 00:25:59.55\00:26:02.59 a pterodactyl or paradactyl, but it was as big as a Cessna 182. 00:26:02.62\00:26:08.66 It was huge, I mean its wingspan. 00:26:08.70\00:26:10.83 And it was a flying dragon. 00:26:10.87\00:26:13.00 They had like tails and all in-- around the world in all 00:26:13.03\00:26:17.97 the cultures, they've got these histories of flying dragons. 00:26:18.01\00:26:21.51 And so, it's probably 'cause some of the people did live 00:26:21.54\00:26:25.01 contemporaneously with flying reptiles. 00:26:25.05\00:26:29.72 Jean: You know, we do have a verse that you mention here 00:26:29.75\00:26:31.72 about behemoth, and I found it in Job, 00:26:31.75\00:26:33.76 Job chapter 40, verse 15. 00:26:33.79\00:26:35.56 It says, "Look now at behemoth, which I made along with you. 00:26:35.59\00:26:39.19 He eats grass like an ox. 00:26:39.23\00:26:41.46 See now his strength is in his hips 00:26:41.50\00:26:43.13 and his power is his stomach muscles." 00:26:43.16\00:26:45.53 Verse 17 is interesting, it says, 00:26:45.57\00:26:47.60 "He moves his tail like a cedar. 00:26:47.64\00:26:49.90 The sinew of his thighs are tightly knit, 00:26:49.94\00:26:52.77 his bones are like beams of bronze." 00:26:52.81\00:26:55.51 He talks about how that he lives amongst the reeds down 00:26:55.54\00:27:00.72 by the marshy area. 00:27:00.75\00:27:02.62 Here we have a description of this massive animal, 00:27:02.65\00:27:05.75 some might think, well, maybe this is a description 00:27:05.79\00:27:08.42 of an elephant. 00:27:08.46\00:27:09.96 But of course, the elephant doesn't have a tale 00:27:09.99\00:27:12.03 like a cedar. 00:27:12.06\00:27:13.40 Doug: This sounds like a brontosaurus or something 00:27:13.43\00:27:15.20 that would-- vegetarian in the swamp. 00:27:15.23\00:27:17.13 Jean: That's right. 00:27:17.17\00:27:18.87 So, it is interesting, we do have that reference 00:27:18.90\00:27:20.30 in Job chapter 40, verse 15. 00:27:20.34\00:27:22.24 And as we mentioned before, Job's probably one 00:27:22.27\00:27:24.17 of the oldest books written by Moses, 00:27:24.21\00:27:26.68 but the story took place a long time even before Moses. 00:27:26.71\00:27:30.91 Doug: And we got to keep in mind that Job, 00:27:30.95\00:27:34.02 he may have lived at the time when Shem was still alive, 00:27:34.05\00:27:36.62 who had lived before the flood. 00:27:36.65\00:27:38.65 And so, or at least one generation away, 00:27:38.69\00:27:40.59 they had firsthand accounts of what some of these 00:27:40.62\00:27:42.76 great prehistoric creatures looked like. 00:27:42.79\00:27:45.19 Jean: Now, the next section in the lesson talks about 00:27:45.23\00:27:47.30 Genesis versus paganism. 00:27:47.36\00:27:49.50 And it is interesting in Genesis chapter 1, verse 14, 00:27:49.53\00:27:52.73 where it talks about God creating the sun and the moon. 00:27:52.77\00:27:55.07 It doesn't specifically say the sun and the moon. 00:27:55.10\00:27:58.44 Could there be a reason for that? 00:27:58.47\00:28:00.51 Was that something that was worshipped by the Egyptians? 00:28:00.54\00:28:03.58 Doug: Well, that's interesting, yeah, absolutely. 00:28:03.61\00:28:06.18 It tells us that God made the lights in the heaven, 00:28:06.21\00:28:09.15 a greater light and a lesser light. 00:28:09.18\00:28:11.19 And God was very clear, He said, "When you're tempted to look 00:28:11.22\00:28:15.36 to the sun and the moon and say, 'You are our gods,'" that 00:28:15.39\00:28:20.56 that would be a sin. 00:28:20.60\00:28:23.16 Matter of fact, even Job said that it would be a sin 00:28:23.20\00:28:26.47 to look to the celestial elements and pray to them. 00:28:26.50\00:28:30.41 And then he goes on to say that if I should kiss my own hand 00:28:30.44\00:28:34.41 and worship myself, we should be worshipping God and not-- 00:28:34.44\00:28:37.88 it's worshipping the creation instead of the Creator 00:28:37.91\00:28:41.52 is idolatry. 00:28:41.55\00:28:43.18 And so, God avoids that in Genesis deliberately. 00:28:43.22\00:28:46.15 Jean: And then we also have accounts given in Genesis, 00:28:46.19\00:28:48.69 Genesis chapter 2, verse 7, it says, 00:28:48.72\00:28:50.53 "God formed man out of the dust of the ground," 'cause breathed 00:28:50.56\00:28:53.80 into him the breath of life, man became a living being. 00:28:53.83\00:28:56.13 It's interesting when you look at the elements that 00:28:56.16\00:28:59.00 going to a human body, it's the same elements 00:28:59.03\00:29:02.20 that we find in the earth. 00:29:02.24\00:29:04.31 Doug: Yeah, it's kind of humbling to consider 00:29:04.34\00:29:07.21 that if you boil us down to our chemical components, 00:29:07.24\00:29:12.08 we're not worth much more than a bag of fertilizer 00:29:12.11\00:29:14.88 because that's what we all turn into when we die. 00:29:14.92\00:29:17.72 And you get a little bit of water and salt and potassium 00:29:17.75\00:29:21.16 and just earth. 00:29:21.19\00:29:23.69 And so, it's really a humble beginning. 00:29:23.73\00:29:28.23 Jean: Now, Billy's asking a question that's come in, 00:29:28.26\00:29:30.03 he says, "You know, it seems as though 00:29:30.07\00:29:32.27 the Bible supports slavery." 00:29:32.30\00:29:33.97 He says he has a hard time answering this question when 00:29:34.00\00:29:37.01 people challenge him about the trustworthiness of the Bible. 00:29:37.04\00:29:40.88 "Does the Bible support slavery? 00:29:40.91\00:29:43.18 And if so, how do we explain that today?" 00:29:43.21\00:29:46.11 Doug: If you want to know what God's original plan is, 00:29:46.15\00:29:48.98 you look at the garden of Eden. 00:29:49.02\00:29:50.42 God did not have slavery in the garden of Eden. 00:29:50.45\00:29:52.69 Slavery, like divorce and like death of animals, 00:29:52.72\00:29:56.06 all came as a result of sin. 00:29:56.09\00:29:58.13 These were never part of God's perfect plan. 00:29:58.16\00:30:00.80 And it is true God made laws to protect the slaves. 00:30:00.83\00:30:06.03 God made laws to protect a family 00:30:06.07\00:30:09.60 where there were multiple wives. 00:30:09.64\00:30:11.54 It's not because it was His plan, 00:30:11.57\00:30:12.94 it's because men were often all killed off in battle, 00:30:12.97\00:30:15.34 and the only way a woman could get married and have children is 00:30:15.38\00:30:18.01 if they had polygamy. 00:30:18.05\00:30:19.91 And God had laws about if you're going to eat meat, 00:30:19.95\00:30:23.12 eat the clean meat. 00:30:23.15\00:30:24.45 It was never God's plan for man to kill animals and eat them. 00:30:24.49\00:30:27.12 So, he made these laws because of the hardness of our heart. 00:30:27.16\00:30:30.13 But clearly it's not God's plan for one person 00:30:30.16\00:30:34.30 to own another person. 00:30:34.30\00:30:36.00 Jean: And of course, we see examples of that even 00:30:36.03\00:30:37.50 in the New Testament, where Jesus mentioned it's because 00:30:37.53\00:30:40.54 of the hardness of your hearts that God allowed these things. 00:30:40.57\00:30:43.14 And of course, if you look at the rules given in 00:30:43.17\00:30:45.64 the Old Testament with reference to somebody that owns a slave, 00:30:45.67\00:30:48.51 there were opportunities for the slave to go free if he chooses, 00:30:48.54\00:30:52.18 depending upon where he's from. 00:30:52.21\00:30:53.85 And there was certain rules as to how you were 00:30:53.88\00:30:55.45 to treat the slaves. 00:30:55.48\00:30:56.79 So, it was quite different than the pagan nations 00:30:56.82\00:30:59.39 that were surrounding Israel at the time. 00:30:59.42\00:31:01.12 Doug: Yeah, absolutely. 00:31:01.16\00:31:02.46 And part of the Sabbath command, you needed 00:31:02.49\00:31:04.26 to let your slave rest. 00:31:04.29\00:31:05.69 Jean: Right, even on the Sabbath. 00:31:05.73\00:31:07.10 Well, that brings us to the subject of marriage then. 00:31:07.13\00:31:10.23 Of course, we read in Genesis chapter 2, verse 18, 00:31:10.27\00:31:12.77 talks about--it says, "God said it is not good 00:31:12.80\00:31:15.60 that man should be alone." 00:31:15.64\00:31:17.01 It's verse 18, "I'll make a helper comparable to him." 00:31:17.04\00:31:19.27 When you talk about marriage, Pastor Doug, 00:31:19.31\00:31:21.58 other than the biblical account that we find in Genesis, 00:31:21.61\00:31:24.25 how does evolution support the idea of why there is male and 00:31:24.28\00:31:30.62 female, not just men and woman, but you look at all animal life 00:31:30.65\00:31:35.12 and even plant life, you've got male and female. 00:31:35.16\00:31:38.93 Doug: You know, there are certain conundrums that 00:31:38.96\00:31:41.56 evolutionists, honest ones, will admit that they cannot solve. 00:31:41.60\00:31:45.93 They cannot find a scenario in the scheme of evolution that 00:31:45.97\00:31:50.24 would necessitate the evolution, that would explain how creatures 00:31:50.27\00:31:56.78 would evolve with two separate genders that could not procreate 00:31:56.81\00:32:04.25 without an act of cooperation and affection. 00:32:04.29\00:32:07.52 And then they say, "Well, but it's much more beneficial 00:32:07.56\00:32:09.69 for the mixture of genes to do this." 00:32:09.72\00:32:12.23 You don't need separate genders. 00:32:12.26\00:32:14.23 Why not have like, you know, snails or I forget 00:32:14.30\00:32:18.10 what they call it where you got one gender, 00:32:18.13\00:32:19.63 it could be either one. 00:32:19.67\00:32:21.00 Every snail is hermaphroditic, or whatever they call it. 00:32:21.04\00:32:24.41 Yeah, earthworm, why aren't all creatures like that? 00:32:24.44\00:32:26.78 They could still exchange their genes. 00:32:26.81\00:32:28.74 But you know, it's a mystery. 00:32:28.78\00:32:31.61 There's so many mysteries in nature when you think about it. 00:32:31.65\00:32:35.08 And what a mystery that, I mean, woman, you know, 00:32:35.12\00:32:40.19 God made His creation in order of complexity. 00:32:40.22\00:32:43.26 First He makes the basic elements, 00:32:43.29\00:32:45.06 you know, and the water and the land, 00:32:45.09\00:32:46.80 and then the vegetation, and then the more complex animals. 00:32:46.83\00:32:49.20 You've got the birds and the fish, and then He makes man. 00:32:49.23\00:32:52.77 And the most complex of all, He makes woman 00:32:52.80\00:32:54.97 as the final part of creation. 00:32:55.00\00:32:56.47 And not too many will disagree with that, 00:32:56.50\00:32:58.94 the complexity of woman. 00:32:58.97\00:33:01.31 But to think about a woman's body has got several processes 00:33:01.34\00:33:06.41 that a man's body just does not have. 00:33:06.45\00:33:08.85 You know, men do not lactate, we do not ovulate, 00:33:08.88\00:33:10.95 we do not gestate and give birth. 00:33:10.99\00:33:15.06 And it is such a miracle that these distinctions 00:33:15.09\00:33:18.79 in the body are so unique. 00:33:18.83\00:33:22.30 And God explains that they were made to be separate, 00:33:22.33\00:33:25.63 unique creatures, and they are that from birth in the garden 00:33:25.67\00:33:29.17 of Eden, that was His plan. 00:33:29.20\00:33:30.87 Jean: Now, somebody's asking a question about this, she says, 00:33:30.91\00:33:33.68 "If both marriage and the Sabbath were created 00:33:33.71\00:33:36.41 before sin, why is it in Matthew 22, verse 30, 00:33:36.44\00:33:39.98 Jesus seems to indicate that there won't be marriage 00:33:40.02\00:33:42.42 in heaven?" 00:33:42.45\00:33:44.35 Doug: Well, God tells us that-- 00:33:44.39\00:33:45.92 Well, we are ultimately married to the Lord. 00:33:45.95\00:33:47.72 In Genesis, the Bible ends with our coming to a marriage supper. 00:33:47.76\00:33:50.29 It's interesting, Jesus's ministry begins 00:33:50.33\00:33:52.53 with first miracle at a marriage feast. 00:33:52.56\00:33:54.93 Then you get to Revelation and we're all invited 00:33:54.96\00:33:57.27 to the marriage supper of the Lamb. 00:33:57.30\00:33:59.03 So, we are married to the Lord. 00:33:59.07\00:34:01.10 And the Bible says, "Husbands, love your wife 00:34:01.14\00:34:03.14 as Christ loves the church." 00:34:03.17\00:34:04.81 But one of the principle purposes for marriage, 00:34:04.84\00:34:07.54 God said, "Go forth, be fruitful." 00:34:07.58\00:34:09.71 And King James says replenish. 00:34:09.74\00:34:12.21 The more accurate word is fill the earth. 00:34:12.25\00:34:15.08 Replenish leaves people with the idea that it was filled once 00:34:15.12\00:34:17.65 and it has to be refilled. 00:34:17.69\00:34:20.02 And so, the earth is going to be populated with the redeemed. 00:34:20.06\00:34:23.09 And God did not intend for people to indefinitely 00:34:23.12\00:34:27.40 through eternity continue to. 00:34:27.40\00:34:29.20 You'd have a big old family. 00:34:29.23\00:34:31.73 And this is why the Mormons, they believe there's marriage 00:34:31.77\00:34:33.44 in heaven, and that you're going to continue needing to make 00:34:33.47\00:34:35.67 new worlds to house all the kids that you have. 00:34:35.70\00:34:39.54 But some people think, "I don't know, 00:34:39.57\00:34:42.04 how am I going to be happy in heaven if there's no marriage? 00:34:42.08\00:34:44.65 Or does that mean that my wife and I get to heaven 00:34:44.68\00:34:47.28 and we get our divorce papers from God?" 00:34:47.32\00:34:49.78 You want to live with your spouse through eternity 00:34:49.82\00:34:52.42 and you love each other, you'll be free to do that. 00:34:52.45\00:34:54.79 Jean: Well, we know that in heaven, 00:34:54.82\00:34:56.12 the Bible says we shall know, even as we are now known, 00:34:56.16\00:34:59.03 so there'll still be family relations. 00:34:59.06\00:35:01.46 And like you said, if you spend your whole life bonding 00:35:01.50\00:35:04.43 with someone here on this earth and you're married, you know, 00:35:04.47\00:35:08.64 wouldn't you be able to enjoy and both saved, 00:35:08.67\00:35:11.01 wouldn't you be able to enjoy heaven and eternity 00:35:11.04\00:35:13.58 with your spouse? 00:35:13.61\00:35:15.28 Doug: Yeah, absolutely. 00:35:15.31\00:35:16.61 I'm going to enjoy going around heaven with Karen 00:35:16.64\00:35:18.45 and looking things over. 00:35:18.48\00:35:20.22 But one of the words in Jesus's statement that people 00:35:20.25\00:35:22.62 misunderstand, it's He says, "There will be no marriage." 00:35:22.65\00:35:26.35 The word "marriage" there, it's the act, 00:35:26.39\00:35:27.89 the verb of marrying. 00:35:27.92\00:35:29.22 There'll be no new marriages. 00:35:29.26\00:35:31.56 Now, when David gets to heaven, I don't know who he'll be 00:35:31.59\00:35:33.86 married to, or Solomon even more confusing, 00:35:33.90\00:35:36.36 but Adam will probably still be married to Eve. 00:35:36.40\00:35:39.90 Jean: Right. 00:35:39.93\00:35:41.34 Well, that brings our next section in our lesson, 00:35:41.37\00:35:42.97 it's talking about creation in time. 00:35:43.00\00:35:44.67 Now, this is one of the things that people look 00:35:44.71\00:35:47.18 at Bible-believing Christians and say, 00:35:47.21\00:35:49.51 "How can you believe that the earth is only 6,000 years old? 00:35:49.54\00:35:54.38 Where do we find 6,000 year old earth in the Bible? 00:35:54.42\00:35:58.65 How do we know that the Bible speaks of the earth 00:35:58.69\00:36:00.72 being about 6,000 years?" 00:36:00.76\00:36:02.39 Doug: Well, when you talk about the earth being 6,000 00:36:02.42\00:36:04.76 years old, it may have been floating around in our solar 00:36:04.79\00:36:08.90 system or our corner of the Milky Way for a long time 00:36:08.93\00:36:13.47 in its chaotic void shape, you know? 00:36:13.50\00:36:16.30 That, I think that's unclear. 00:36:16.34\00:36:18.27 It is clear that He organized things in a special way. 00:36:18.31\00:36:21.01 And when God says on the fourth day He made the stars 00:36:21.04\00:36:23.95 and the greater lights and the lesser lights, 00:36:23.98\00:36:25.98 that may be the greater lights and lesser lights of our 00:36:26.01\00:36:29.55 Milky Way galaxy, which would be about 200 billion blazing suns. 00:36:29.58\00:36:33.86 Doesn't mean that all the flickering lights 00:36:33.89\00:36:36.42 that you see out there, many of them galaxies, 00:36:36.46\00:36:38.56 were created six days-- 6,000 years ago. 00:36:38.59\00:36:42.33 But when you start looking at the dates that God gives in 00:36:42.36\00:36:44.73 the Bible, and we'll get in our next section more to chronology, 00:36:44.77\00:36:48.27 but the dates that are given in the Bible, 00:36:48.30\00:36:50.07 they are six literal days, 24 hours, successive periods. 00:36:50.11\00:36:53.71 And then it tells us the ages of Adam, 00:36:53.74\00:36:57.91 and Seth, and Enos, on through Enoch, 00:36:57.95\00:37:01.85 through Noah, and Abraham. 00:37:01.88\00:37:03.65 And you've got a chronology. 00:37:03.69\00:37:05.02 And you can do some rough math, and there's some gaps here 00:37:05.05\00:37:08.09 and there like with the sons of Noah, 00:37:08.12\00:37:10.69 doesn't say how old they were. 00:37:10.73\00:37:13.29 Were all they triplets? 00:37:13.33\00:37:14.60 It just kind of gives--you know, I think it says he lived 00:37:14.63\00:37:16.03 600 years, and that's Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 00:37:16.06\00:37:19.13 Well, was it all that year? 00:37:19.17\00:37:21.30 Did he--I mean, so there's some gaps here and there, 00:37:21.34\00:37:24.84 but they're not big ones. 00:37:24.87\00:37:26.57 And so, when you just add up the chronology, 00:37:26.61\00:37:29.98 we've got an age for the earth, or at least for the time of Adam 00:37:30.01\00:37:33.82 that goes back about 6,000 years. 00:37:33.85\00:37:36.58 Jean: You know, maybe I want to just add to that, 00:37:36.62\00:37:37.92 there are people that are trying to calculate 00:37:37.95\00:37:40.06 the exact age of the earth. 00:37:40.09\00:37:41.99 And one of the things you got to bear in mind is when you start 00:37:42.02\00:37:44.93 doing that, adding up all the different ages 00:37:44.96\00:37:47.03 of the patriarchs, the Bible doesn't tell you the year 00:37:47.03\00:37:49.43 and the month or even the day that they had their son. 00:37:49.46\00:37:54.17 It'll say in the 60th year or so and so's life, he had his son. 00:37:54.20\00:37:58.94 Well, you got 12 months there, you don't have the beginning 00:37:58.97\00:38:01.54 of that 60th year or maybe it's near the end. 00:38:01.58\00:38:03.11 So, there is an area that we don't know. 00:38:03.14\00:38:05.95 And if you add up all those bits, 00:38:05.98\00:38:07.62 we don't know what that is. 00:38:07.65\00:38:09.05 Roughly 6,000 years, but we can't nail down a specific day 00:38:09.08\00:38:12.82 and say, "All right, today, the earth is 6,000 years old." 00:38:12.85\00:38:15.46 Doug: That's important this day and age 'cause some people 00:38:15.49\00:38:16.96 are trying to use that to pick a date for the Second Coming. 00:38:16.99\00:38:19.63 Jean: Right. 00:38:19.66\00:38:21.43 Doug: And you need to be careful about that. 00:38:21.46\00:38:23.77 I was going to say something else now. 00:38:23.80\00:38:25.63 Jean: Well, let me ask you this, 00:38:25.67\00:38:27.00 you mentioned about creating time, 00:38:27.04\00:38:28.44 or at least seemingly time. 00:38:28.47\00:38:30.84 When God created the garden of Eden and He created 00:38:30.87\00:38:33.71 the tree of life, one of the questions is, 00:38:33.74\00:38:35.74 did He create tiny little shrubs that it's still growing 00:38:35.78\00:38:38.08 to giant trees, or were these full-grown trees? 00:38:38.11\00:38:41.72 When He made the animals, were they tiny little, 00:38:41.75\00:38:44.25 you know, bear cubs, or did He make big grizzly bears? 00:38:44.29\00:38:47.46 Doug: Yeah, that was really what I was going to say 00:38:47.49\00:38:49.82 and I forgot about, is that when we're talking about the age 00:38:49.86\00:38:52.09 of the earth, some people say, "Well, when they date the rocks, 00:38:52.13\00:38:54.83 they come out to billions of years." 00:38:54.86\00:38:56.50 And they say, "When they date the stars," we know the speed 00:38:56.53\00:38:59.20 of light is a constant, 186,000 miles per second roughly. 00:38:59.23\00:39:03.67 And they say, "These calculus tells us these galaxies and suns 00:39:03.71\00:39:06.88 are billions of miles of lightyears away. 00:39:06.91\00:39:11.35 That means that they could never have been created 6,000 years 00:39:11.38\00:39:15.12 ago or their light would never have-- 00:39:15.15\00:39:17.12 wouldn't even be reaching us yet." 00:39:17.15\00:39:18.75 Well, we forget that the belly button factor. 00:39:18.79\00:39:21.89 And what I mean by that is that when God made Adam, 00:39:21.92\00:39:25.06 did he have a belly button? 00:39:25.09\00:39:27.23 Why would he need one? God made Adam full-grown. 00:39:27.23\00:39:30.63 He made trees. 00:39:30.67\00:39:32.27 When you cut down a tree in the garden of Eden, 00:39:32.30\00:39:33.94 did it have rings in it? 00:39:33.97\00:39:35.40 There are rings typically, dendrochronology, 00:39:35.44\00:39:37.47 you use it for dating the-- you know, 00:39:37.51\00:39:39.17 one ring roughly per year, a season. 00:39:39.21\00:39:41.08 Well, seasons were different in the garden of Eden, 00:39:41.11\00:39:43.61 but they probably had rings. 00:39:43.65\00:39:45.31 And so, man was made from the factory with prewired knowledge. 00:39:45.35\00:39:50.49 Adam knew how to walk and talk, bears were full grown. 00:39:50.52\00:39:52.42 The garden of Eden was not full of puppies and kitties. 00:39:52.45\00:39:56.09 They all came later. 00:39:56.12\00:39:58.43 And they were full-grown creatures. 00:39:58.46\00:40:00.36 God made the world with maybe some built-in age. 00:40:00.40\00:40:02.63 He made the world with the light already en route 00:40:02.66\00:40:06.23 so we'd enjoy it. 00:40:06.27\00:40:08.10 And so, people forget that God can create, He's powerful. 00:40:08.14\00:40:11.11 He can create things with some evidence of time built in. 00:40:11.14\00:40:14.11 Jean: And I think that's important to remember, 00:40:14.14\00:40:16.81 God created Adam and Eve with the ability 00:40:16.85\00:40:18.58 to communicate right away. 00:40:18.61\00:40:20.45 They didn't have to learn the language. 00:40:20.48\00:40:22.05 And God created everything they needed to have a wonderful life, 00:40:22.08\00:40:25.42 which required, like you say, creating certain things 00:40:25.45\00:40:28.62 more advanced in time. 00:40:28.66\00:40:30.63 A little baby's born now, they can't speak, 00:40:30.66\00:40:33.46 they don't understand. 00:40:33.50\00:40:34.76 So, Adam and Eve were created, I don't know, 00:40:34.83\00:40:36.46 the perfect age, whatever that might be. 00:40:36.50\00:40:38.40 Doug: Sixty-three. 00:40:38.43\00:40:39.97 Jean: Yeah, whatever that age might be. 00:40:40.00\00:40:43.00 All right, so we have a question that's coming from Benjamin, 00:40:43.04\00:40:45.11 he's 11 years old. 00:40:45.14\00:40:46.44 It's a good question, he says, 00:40:46.47\00:40:47.78 "Joseph, you know, kept God's commandments, 00:40:47.81\00:40:49.91 but when Joseph was in Egypt, how did he keep the Sabbath?" 00:40:49.94\00:40:54.45 We're not even sure if he did keep the Sabbath in Egypt. 00:40:54.48\00:40:56.52 At least, you know, that's what Benjamin's asking. 00:40:56.55\00:40:59.55 Doug: Well, you know, it seems that Joseph 00:40:59.59\00:41:01.49 was aware of the commandments. 00:41:01.52\00:41:03.43 He certainly was not willing to break the commandment 00:41:03.46\00:41:05.33 about idolatry. 00:41:05.36\00:41:06.80 Even the ancient Egyptians we believe did have a day of rest. 00:41:06.83\00:41:10.10 Whether they kept the day of the sun, the first day, some-- 00:41:10.13\00:41:12.50 I think in Hislop's book on Babylon, it says, 00:41:12.53\00:41:15.77 "The Babylonians got Sunday worship from the Egyptians. 00:41:15.80\00:41:19.21 I don't know that. 00:41:19.24\00:41:20.88 So, they still believed in giving their servants 00:41:20.91\00:41:24.98 a day of rest. 00:41:25.01\00:41:26.55 And I don't find it hard to believe that if Joseph was 00:41:26.58\00:41:30.85 a faithful servant if he said, "Can I please have this day 00:41:30.89\00:41:33.29 to worship my God?" 00:41:33.32\00:41:34.62 they may have honored that. 00:41:34.66\00:41:35.96 We don't know, so let's not assume that he disobeyed. 00:41:35.99\00:41:38.16 Jean: Right. 00:41:38.19\00:41:39.49 And you know, if you look at the account given in Genesis, 00:41:39.53\00:41:41.26 at least during the time that he was with Potiphar 00:41:41.30\00:41:43.30 before the situation occurred with Potiphar's wife, 00:41:43.33\00:41:45.50 he was a very trusted servant, even to the point where Potiphar 00:41:45.53\00:41:49.17 didn't know how much he had. 00:41:49.20\00:41:51.37 Everything was taken care of by Joseph. 00:41:51.41\00:41:53.31 So, I'm sure Potiphar recognized Joseph as being faithful. 00:41:53.34\00:41:57.65 And if Joseph had asked, "I'd like to take this day off," 00:41:57.68\00:42:00.78 quite possible he received that. 00:42:00.82\00:42:02.95 Okay, well, another reason why we have chronology in the Bible, 00:42:02.98\00:42:05.99 and this is probably one of the important reasons not only 00:42:06.02\00:42:08.89 to give us time, but it also guides us in the fulfillment 00:42:08.92\00:42:13.16 of a promise of a Messiah, of a Savior that would come. 00:42:13.19\00:42:17.03 And I think that's a big part of what chronology is, 00:42:17.07\00:42:19.90 especially if you start going into the New Testament, 00:42:19.93\00:42:21.90 and you begin to see some of the chronology found 00:42:21.94\00:42:24.24 in Matthew and in Luke chapter 3. 00:42:24.27\00:42:26.44 Doug: Yeah, I remember when I first was reading 00:42:26.47\00:42:28.68 Luke chapter 3, and it started with a chronology of Jesus. 00:42:28.71\00:42:32.05 Now in Luke, Luke is tracing in the chronology of Jesus 00:42:32.08\00:42:35.55 through Mary's father-in-law. 00:42:35.58\00:42:39.82 I should say Joseph's father-in-law through Mary. 00:42:39.85\00:42:42.92 Matthew traces it through Joseph's family. 00:42:42.96\00:42:46.06 And Luke being a physician, he knew that the genetic connection 00:42:46.09\00:42:53.60 with Jesus was through Mary, and so he wanted 00:42:53.64\00:42:56.14 to trace it that way. 00:42:56.17\00:42:57.64 But it goes all the way from Jesus back to Adam, 00:42:57.67\00:43:01.61 and it is so moving when it says Jesus, 00:43:01.64\00:43:04.01 and this is Luke 3:23, "Jesus Himself began His ministry being 00:43:04.05\00:43:07.12 about 30 years of age, being as was supposed the son of Joseph, 00:43:07.15\00:43:10.82 the son of Heli, the son of Matthat, 00:43:10.85\00:43:12.62 the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, 00:43:12.65\00:43:14.82 the son of Janna, the son of Joseph, 00:43:14.86\00:43:16.96 the son of Mattathiah, the son of Amos, 00:43:16.99\00:43:19.93 the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, 00:43:19.96\00:43:21.53 the son of Naggai, the son of Maath, 00:43:21.56\00:43:24.43 the son of Mattathiah, the son of Semei, 00:43:24.47\00:43:27.07 the son of Joseph, the son of Judah." 00:43:27.10\00:43:28.94 And I'm going to verse 38 now, "The son of Enos, 00:43:28.97\00:43:32.31 the son of Seth, the son of Adam, 00:43:32.34\00:43:33.98 the son of God." 00:43:34.01\00:43:35.91 Now, so one of the important things about the genealogy is 00:43:35.94\00:43:38.41 it's connecting Jesus all the way with God. 00:43:38.45\00:43:42.68 It connects us with God. 00:43:42.72\00:43:44.52 We did not evolve from ancestors that were dragging 00:43:44.55\00:43:47.92 their knuckles around on the ground. 00:43:47.96\00:43:50.03 We're connected directly with God. 00:43:50.06\00:43:51.96 Something else, and even the time that we keep, 00:43:51.99\00:43:54.46 Pastor Ross, you know, we can look up in the stars and 00:43:54.46\00:43:58.03 we can see there's astronomical reasons for all of the 00:43:58.07\00:44:01.80 ancient civilizations to have a calendar with roughly 365, 00:44:01.84\00:44:06.68 360 days in the year 'cause that's how long it takes 00:44:06.71\00:44:09.68 for the earth to go around the sun, cycle of the seasons. 00:44:09.71\00:44:12.71 We can see why they would have a month with approximately 00:44:12.75\00:44:15.72 27 days, 30 days. 00:44:15.75\00:44:19.12 It's a lunar cycle dictates the months, 00:44:19.15\00:44:21.89 that's where we get the word "month," from moon. 00:44:21.92\00:44:24.33 And we can see a day would have 24 hours because 00:44:24.36\00:44:27.13 that's how long it takes to rotate. 00:44:27.13\00:44:28.96 But the whole world keeps a seven day week. 00:44:29.00\00:44:32.00 Where in the sun, moon, and stars do you get 00:44:32.03\00:44:33.94 a seven day week? 00:44:33.97\00:44:35.47 Only place you can trace the seven day week is to the Bible. 00:44:35.50\00:44:38.51 And yet, the whole world recognizes the seven day week. 00:44:38.54\00:44:41.11 Jean: And I think even in some of the languages 00:44:41.14\00:44:42.44 of the world, there is a reference to the Sabbath, 00:44:42.48\00:44:46.08 for example, in Spanish, the seventh day of the week. 00:44:46.11\00:44:48.18 We call it in English Saturday, but in Spanish Sabado. 00:44:48.22\00:44:51.62 Doug: Russian, Subbota. 00:44:51.65\00:44:53.15 And about 145 languages of the world, 00:44:53.19\00:44:55.52 the word for the seventh day or Saturday is Sabbath 00:44:55.56\00:44:59.23 because we all sprang from the same origins. 00:44:59.26\00:45:02.43 Jean: Our last section that we have in our lesson is, 00:45:02.46\00:45:04.77 "How did Jesus and New Testament writers feel about the creation 00:45:04.80\00:45:09.34 account that we find in Genesis? 00:45:09.37\00:45:11.34 Did they recognize it as being trustworthy?" 00:45:11.37\00:45:14.18 Doug: Yeah, there's--and this is one of the reasons that you 00:45:14.21\00:45:18.11 really can't say, "I believe the Bible," and not believe biblical 00:45:18.15\00:45:21.12 creation because you have to continually apologize for the 00:45:21.15\00:45:24.62 New Testament writers that said that they believed in creation. 00:45:24.65\00:45:29.52 And just a couple of examples. 00:45:29.56\00:45:31.19 First of all, you can't believe Jesus. 00:45:31.23\00:45:33.16 Jesus says in Matthew chapter 19, verse 4 and 5, 00:45:33.19\00:45:36.50 "And He answered them and said, 00:45:36.53\00:45:38.27 'Have you not read that He that made them in the beginning 00:45:38.30\00:45:41.04 made them male and female?'" 00:45:41.07\00:45:43.10 So, He points back, says that man and woman 00:45:43.14\00:45:45.51 were made in the image of God, fiat creation. 00:45:45.54\00:45:48.61 "'For this reason, a man will leave his father and mother, 00:45:48.64\00:45:51.01 be joined his wife, the two become one flesh.'" 00:45:51.05\00:45:52.98 He's quoting the first two chapters of Genesis here. 00:45:53.01\00:45:56.75 And then in Luke chapter 11, verse 51, 00:45:56.79\00:46:01.82 Christ is talking about the judgement that was going to come 00:46:01.86\00:46:04.03 upon the unbelievers that were rejecting Jesus. 00:46:04.06\00:46:06.63 And He said, "From the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, 00:46:06.66\00:46:11.13 who perished between the altar and the temple, yes, 00:46:11.17\00:46:13.94 I say it shall be required of this generation." 00:46:13.97\00:46:16.20 And Jesus is referring back to Cain, 00:46:16.24\00:46:19.37 who killed Abel as not a fictitious story, 00:46:19.41\00:46:22.71 said it's a real story. 00:46:22.74\00:46:24.45 And the reason He says it's a real story, 00:46:24.48\00:46:26.25 He said that God has made a note of it, and the judgement 00:46:26.28\00:46:30.32 for that evil deed is going to come upon that generation. 00:46:30.35\00:46:33.69 So, why would God bring judgement for a fairytale 00:46:33.72\00:46:36.26 on a generation? 00:46:36.29\00:46:37.86 He looks upon what happened to Abel as real. 00:46:37.89\00:46:40.46 Jean: And then you got Paul, we have it recorded 00:46:40.50\00:46:42.60 in Acts chapter 14, verse 15 where Paul speaks about God 00:46:42.63\00:46:46.50 creating the heavens, the earth, the sea, and all things in them. 00:46:46.53\00:46:49.27 And actually, he was speaking to Pagans there, 00:46:49.30\00:46:51.31 and he's talking about God being the one who created all things. 00:46:51.34\00:46:54.51 And of course, he had the account Genesis chapter 1. 00:46:54.54\00:46:56.98 Doug: Yeah, and he's going against-- 00:46:57.01\00:46:58.81 Paul knew what the pagans believed. 00:46:58.85\00:47:00.48 Raised in Tarsus and he knew they had all kinds 00:47:00.52\00:47:03.69 of bizarre accounts. 00:47:03.72\00:47:05.25 The Pagans were also aware of the Jewish belief in one God who 00:47:05.29\00:47:08.86 spoke everything into existence, and so he's not shocking them 00:47:08.89\00:47:12.63 by that statement. 00:47:12.66\00:47:14.03 And you can read Jude verse 11, Jean. 00:47:14.10\00:47:16.43 Jean: Yes, Jude chapter-- verse 11, Jude 1, it says, 00:47:16.46\00:47:19.10 "Woe to them, for they have gone after the way 00:47:19.13\00:47:21.20 of Cain and have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, 00:47:21.24\00:47:25.07 and perished in rebellion of Korah.'" 00:47:25.11\00:47:27.21 So, there we have Cain, Balaam, Korah, 00:47:27.24\00:47:30.18 these are Old Testament characters that we read about. 00:47:30.21\00:47:33.38 Doug: Yeah, and of course, Cain back there 00:47:33.42\00:47:35.72 in the garden of Eden, chapter 4 of Genesis. 00:47:35.75\00:47:38.25 And then even if you jump to Revelations chapter 22, 00:47:38.29\00:47:40.79 it tells us, "In the middle of its street on either side of 00:47:40.82\00:47:44.06 the river was the tree of life that bore 12 fruits each year, 00:47:44.09\00:47:49.00 each yielding its fruit every month. 00:47:49.03\00:47:51.90 And the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations." 00:47:51.93\00:47:54.64 By the way, that's similar to the last chapters of Ezekiel, 00:47:54.67\00:47:58.41 where it says there's this tree of life or trees of life, 00:47:58.44\00:48:02.34 and their leaves are for medicine. 00:48:02.38\00:48:04.45 And--but the tree of life, the truth about that goes 00:48:04.48\00:48:07.68 all the way back to the garden of Eden. 00:48:07.72\00:48:10.42 And not only in Revelation chapter 22, 00:48:10.45\00:48:13.02 but I think Revelation 2 also, he mentions the tree of life. 00:48:13.05\00:48:16.56 Jean: Now, of course, we want to remind those who are 00:48:16.59\00:48:18.29 joining us about our free offer that we have for today, 00:48:18.33\00:48:20.16 this is just a great little book, it's called, Amazing Facts, changed lives. 00:49:31.77\00:49:34.27 Steve Johnson: I was heading south on Interstate 5. 00:49:41.98\00:49:44.65 This commercial came on KFBK radio about a Revelation seminar 00:49:44.68\00:49:49.48 by Amazing Facts. 00:49:49.52\00:49:50.99 I began--my chest began to tighten up, 00:49:51.02\00:49:53.66 I began sweating profusely. 00:49:53.69\00:49:56.12 I had difficulty in breathing. 00:49:56.16\00:49:58.73 There were this big rest area. 00:49:58.76\00:50:00.93 And at this time, I pulled into there, I thought, 00:50:00.96\00:50:02.70 "Well, maybe I'm having a heart attack." 00:50:02.73\00:50:05.17 I got out of my truck, walked into the men's restroom there, 00:50:05.20\00:50:09.10 and put cold water on my face, and then finally 00:50:09.14\00:50:11.61 things subsided. 00:50:11.64\00:50:13.24 A week later, again I heard this Amazing Facts 00:50:13.27\00:50:15.71 commercial come on the radio. 00:50:15.74\00:50:17.55 In fact, the meetings were going to start that very night. 00:50:17.58\00:50:20.02 And again, immediately I had these same symptoms. 00:50:20.05\00:50:23.69 I thought, "You know, this isn't my heart. 00:50:23.72\00:50:25.95 I have to go to that meeting." 00:50:25.99\00:50:28.22 And as I was going down to Sacramento, 00:50:28.26\00:50:29.89 I decided to park and go inside. 00:50:29.92\00:50:33.40 Well, I got in and walked into the furthermost rear seat 00:50:33.43\00:50:37.97 they had in the pew there. 00:50:38.00\00:50:40.27 And this particular evangelist, his name was Kim Kjaer. 00:50:40.30\00:50:46.51 It was like taking one layer off at a time of an onion. 00:50:46.54\00:50:50.58 He laid it out so perfectly that we could all understand it. 00:50:50.61\00:50:53.68 And I was really motivated, I couldn't believe it. 00:50:53.72\00:50:56.18 Well, I finished, I didn't miss a meeting. 00:50:56.22\00:50:58.42 In fact, on the fifth night, they had an altar call, 00:50:58.45\00:51:01.82 and my knees stood right up, and I walked forward, 00:51:01.86\00:51:05.23 and I gave my heart to Jesus Christ. 00:51:05.26\00:51:07.73 I've learned throughout this whole thing that when you-- 00:51:07.76\00:51:11.03 when you leave the devil's territory, 00:51:11.07\00:51:13.80 he gets pretty active in causing a lot of problems. 00:51:13.84\00:51:17.74 Well, I had the evangelist come out and they had prayer with me 00:51:17.77\00:51:22.04 about my business. 00:51:22.08\00:51:23.31 I would find a sick business and make it well and then market it. 00:51:23.35\00:51:28.48 I finally ended up with a business that I really enjoyed. 00:51:28.52\00:51:31.55 It was one that was building equestrian centers. 00:51:31.59\00:51:35.02 And they said to me, "Steve," he said, 00:51:35.06\00:51:37.09 "you know, if you're going to really keep the Sabbath, 00:51:37.13\00:51:39.16 you've got to shut your doors on the Sabbath." 00:51:39.19\00:51:41.56 Well, I did. 00:51:41.60\00:51:43.16 And so, I sold the business to my brother. 00:51:43.20\00:51:45.40 Took me 22 years to build that business, 00:51:45.43\00:51:48.60 and he lost it in 33 months. 00:51:48.64\00:51:51.44 My son, who was my business partner, 00:51:51.47\00:51:53.44 I'd been giving him 10% of the business every year. 00:51:53.48\00:51:56.78 He thought I'd just fallen off the bridge. 00:51:56.81\00:51:58.98 My son didn't talk to me for five and a half years. 00:52:01.15\00:52:04.15 And then a few other things happened. 00:52:04.19\00:52:06.49 So, I had an ex-employee living in my guesthouse, 00:52:06.52\00:52:09.09 he kind of watched after our place. 00:52:09.12\00:52:11.89 And he said, "Steve," he said, "there's an Allied moving van 00:52:11.93\00:52:15.00 backed up to your front door in your home." 00:52:15.03\00:52:17.93 I said, "You're kidding." 00:52:17.97\00:52:19.27 I said, "What do you mean?" 00:52:19.30\00:52:20.60 He said, "They're moving everything out of your house 00:52:20.64\00:52:23.41 into this truck, and your wife is out there supervising them." 00:52:23.44\00:52:27.71 And when I went home and opened the front door, 00:52:27.74\00:52:29.61 my voice echoed in that house. 00:52:29.64\00:52:31.48 There wasn't any furniture left anywhere. 00:52:31.51\00:52:32.98 There was one bed left in the house. 00:52:33.01\00:52:36.42 I knew my wife was upset because of my coming to this church, 00:52:36.45\00:52:40.86 but I had no idea that she would move out like this. 00:52:40.89\00:52:43.89 That was a total shock to me. 00:52:43.93\00:52:46.26 It was some time there I locked myself in the bedroom 00:52:46.29\00:52:49.00 and I began reading the Bible. 00:52:49.03\00:52:50.87 I spent about a half a year just every night getting home 00:52:50.90\00:52:54.17 and I would study. 00:52:54.20\00:52:57.37 It allowed me to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. 00:52:57.41\00:53:01.18 Well, to make a long story short, 00:53:01.21\00:53:03.21 I met Crystal, and she was a godly woman. 00:53:03.24\00:53:06.68 That was the Lord's doing, not mine. 00:53:06.72\00:53:09.25 And He was just there to let me know that, 00:53:09.28\00:53:11.45 "I'm with you all the way. 00:53:11.49\00:53:12.72 Even though you're going to have some trials and you're going to 00:53:12.75\00:53:14.89 have some hardships, I want you to know that I'll be with you." 00:53:14.92\00:53:19.06 Because no matter what I do now, He is my leader. 00:53:19.09\00:53:23.57 He's the leader of my marriage, He's the leader of everything 00:53:23.60\00:53:26.03 in my life today. 00:53:26.07\00:53:28.04 That one meeting with the Amazing Facts seminar 00:53:28.07\00:53:30.11 changed my entire life. 00:53:30.14\00:53:32.31 And to this day, I'm still on fire for God, 00:53:32.34\00:53:35.84 I'm still witnessing to my neighbors. 00:53:35.88\00:53:37.98 My name is Steve Johnson, and it's because of you 00:53:38.01\00:53:40.15 that Amazing Facts has changed my life. 00:53:40.18\00:53:43.62 ¤¤¤ 00:53:43.65\00:53:53.63 ¤¤¤ 00:53:53.66\00:54:01.27 Doug: Have you ever heard a mouse howl like a wolf? 00:54:01.30\00:54:05.17 Well, what would you expect would happen when a creature 00:54:05.21\00:54:07.54 changes its destiny from the hapless prey to mighty predator? 00:54:07.58\00:54:12.81 From the outside, they look very much like 00:54:12.85\00:54:14.62 just an oversized field mouse. 00:54:14.65\00:54:16.99 Cute brown fur, white on the underbelly, 00:54:17.02\00:54:19.25 nice little beady eyes. 00:54:19.29\00:54:21.36 But that's where the similarities stop. 00:54:21.39\00:54:23.32 Grasshopper mice are very unusual, 00:54:23.36\00:54:25.66 making them the objects of great interest for animal researchers. 00:54:25.69\00:54:30.27 These furry little creatures are found in the harsh deserts 00:54:30.30\00:54:33.84 of North America. 00:54:33.87\00:54:35.30 They're very territorial in nature, 00:54:35.34\00:54:37.04 and they will monopolize and fend off 25 acres. 00:54:37.07\00:54:40.51 They don't build their own homes, 00:54:40.54\00:54:42.08 but sort of confiscate the burrows and the homes 00:54:42.11\00:54:44.18 of other creatures. 00:54:44.21\00:54:46.68 They're not called grasshopper mice because they hop around, 00:54:46.72\00:54:48.78 but it's because they eat a lot of grasshoppers. 00:54:48.82\00:54:51.42 In fact, scientists have discovered grasshopper mice 00:54:51.45\00:54:53.92 are the only mice that are purely carnivorous. 00:54:53.96\00:54:57.09 They hunt much like cats or weasels, 00:54:57.13\00:55:00.93 stalking their pray in a predatory fashion. 00:55:00.96\00:55:03.43 And when they pounce, they are ferocious, 00:55:03.47\00:55:06.33 sometimes even taking on snakes and scorpions and centipedes. 00:55:06.37\00:55:11.44 When a grasshopper mouse gets into a fierce battle 00:55:11.47\00:55:13.94 with a snake or a scorpion or centipede, 00:55:13.98\00:55:16.04 they may be bit or stung several times. 00:55:16.08\00:55:18.61 But what is amazing to researchers is they've noticed 00:55:18.65\00:55:21.55 when they are bitten, they somehow shake it off 00:55:21.58\00:55:24.95 because they convert the toxin in the venom to painkiller. 00:55:24.99\00:55:30.03 I think you can understand why this information would be 00:55:30.06\00:55:32.69 of special interest to scientists that are trying 00:55:32.73\00:55:35.16 to discover new ways for people to deal with chronic pain. 00:55:35.20\00:55:40.40 One of the most intriguing characteristics of these 00:55:40.44\00:55:42.74 little creatures is when they're defending their territory 00:55:42.77\00:55:45.57 or celebrating a victory over some adversary, 00:55:45.61\00:55:48.91 they'll throw back their head and let out 00:55:48.94\00:55:51.21 this earthshaking howl. 00:55:51.25\00:55:54.35 It's a mousy howl, check it out. 00:55:54.38\00:55:57.12 [mouse howling] 00:55:57.15\00:56:02.92 Doug: The grasshopper mouse is not the only member of creation 00:56:02.96\00:56:05.69 that can survive encounters with venomous predators. 00:56:05.73\00:56:09.36 In Luke 10:19, it says, "Behold, I will give you authority 00:56:09.40\00:56:13.13 to trample on serpents and scorpions and 00:56:13.17\00:56:15.80 over all the power of the enemy. 00:56:15.84\00:56:18.41 Nothing will by any means hurt you." 00:56:18.44\00:56:21.34 We don't have to be the biggest and the strongest to defeat 00:56:21.38\00:56:24.25 our enemy and let out that victory roar. 00:56:24.28\00:56:26.58 When God called David to be king, 00:56:26.61\00:56:28.32 no human would have guessed that he had it in him. 00:56:28.35\00:56:30.79 He was young and insignificant. 00:56:30.82\00:56:32.99 From the outside, he looked like there was no greatness in him. 00:56:33.02\00:56:36.36 But when God looked at his heart, 00:56:36.39\00:56:38.33 He saw courage, humility, compassion, and love. 00:56:38.36\00:56:41.33 David wasn't perfect and he made mistakes, 00:56:41.36\00:56:43.73 but through God's power, he was able to conquer giants. 00:56:43.77\00:56:47.87 Friend, God does not intend that you live out the rest of 00:56:47.90\00:56:51.27 your life cowering and trembling like a little field mouse. 00:56:51.31\00:56:54.91 If God can take the grasshopper mouse and give him courage 00:56:54.94\00:56:57.35 so that he fights snakes and scorpions and centipedes, 00:56:57.38\00:57:01.12 if God can put in the heart of David the courage to fight 00:57:01.15\00:57:04.39 giants like Goliath, then He can give you that same courage. 00:57:04.42\00:57:08.69 The Scriptures say God has not given you the spirit of fear, 00:57:08.72\00:57:12.06 but of power, love, and a sound mind. 00:57:12.09\00:57:15.73 And you can have that peace in your heart when you invite 00:57:15.76\00:57:18.17 the Prince of Peace in your heart. 00:57:18.20\00:57:20.04 Why don't you do that right now? 00:57:20.07\00:57:22.10 ¤¤¤
