00:02:43.93\00:02:47.40 If the Bible is the message of God to us, clearly there are 00:02:47.40\00:02:52.77 some misunderstandings out there because you've got one Bible, 00:02:52.80\00:02:57.11 the Bible says one Lord, one truth, one baptism, 00:02:57.14\00:03:00.21 there's one Jesus. 00:03:00.24\00:03:01.84 And yet you have hundreds of major denominations that say 00:03:01.88\00:03:06.65 they're Christian, they'll read the passages and they come up 00:03:06.68\00:03:09.58 with different ideas. 00:03:09.62\00:03:10.95 Why does that happen? 00:03:10.99\00:03:12.45 Jean: Well, you know, I think one of the key things that's 00:03:12.49\00:03:14.29 brought to view is context. 00:03:14.32\00:03:16.06 We need to recognize that the Bible is written in a particular 00:03:16.09\00:03:18.89 context, and we need to see what the Bible says about a 00:03:18.93\00:03:21.33 particular subject through its entirety. 00:03:21.36\00:03:23.93 We don't want to build a doctrine on just one verse. 00:03:23.97\00:03:26.47 And that sort of leads into our memory text that we're going to 00:03:26.50\00:03:29.47 be talking about, Deuteronomy chapter 31, verse 26. 00:03:29.50\00:03:32.97 And this is coming from the New King James version, it says, 00:03:33.01\00:03:35.58 "Take the book of the law and put it beside the Ark of the 00:03:35.61\00:03:38.61 Covenant of the Lord your God, that it might there be a witness 00:03:38.65\00:03:42.25 against you." 00:03:42.28\00:03:43.82 Now, a little bit of the context, this is God speaking to 00:03:43.85\00:03:45.89 Moses when Moses was instructed to build the tabernacle. 00:03:45.92\00:03:49.06 And the most holy place of the sanctuary or the tabernacle 00:03:49.09\00:03:52.99 contained the Ark of the Covenant. 00:03:53.03\00:03:54.60 And there were some things that were put in the ark, and then 00:03:54.63\00:03:56.93 there things that were put next to the ark. 00:03:56.97\00:03:59.50 The things in the ark, you got the Ten Commandments written on 00:03:59.53\00:04:02.04 two tables of stone. 00:04:02.07\00:04:03.54 We've got the rod that budded, Aaron's rod. 00:04:03.57\00:04:07.28 We've got a bowl of manna inside the ark. 00:04:07.31\00:04:11.41 But on the outside of the ark in sort of a--you might say a 00:04:11.45\00:04:14.72 little bag or a pocket of some kind was the law. 00:04:14.75\00:04:18.15 And when it talks about the law, Pastor Doug, we're not just 00:04:18.19\00:04:20.29 talking about the Ten Commandments here. 00:04:20.32\00:04:22.96 When it says, "Put the law next to the ark," what is that law? 00:04:22.99\00:04:27.30 Doug: Well, some have wondered, "Was this just the 00:04:27.30\00:04:29.03 book of Deuteronomy?" 00:04:29.06\00:04:30.60 that actually where you find this verse. 00:04:30.63\00:04:32.97 And we do have that story in where Josiah during the--Hilkiah 00:04:33.00\00:04:39.34 the priest was cleaning out the sanctuary and they found 00:04:39.37\00:04:42.71 the book of Moses, the book of the law. 00:04:42.74\00:04:45.31 They wondered, was this the book of Deuteronomy? 00:04:45.35\00:04:47.25 Did it include the whole Torah, the five books of Moses 00:04:47.28\00:04:50.12 beginning with Genesis? 00:04:50.15\00:04:51.49 It's hard to say. 00:04:51.52\00:04:53.02 In both cases, the quotes that were taken were from 00:04:53.05\00:04:55.56 Deuteronomy, and so it may have been that specifically 00:04:55.59\00:05:00.23 Deuteronomy, which was the repeating of the law, the 00:05:00.26\00:05:02.33 summary of their experience, that was to be put there as a 00:05:02.36\00:05:05.53 witness against them. 00:05:05.57\00:05:07.37 Paul refers that in Colossians too, when he said, 00:05:07.40\00:05:10.01 "There was a law that was nailed to the cross that was witnessed 00:05:10.04\00:05:13.01 against them." 00:05:13.04\00:05:14.84 And-- 00:05:14.88\00:05:16.18 Jean: I think it also--Paul says handwritten oracles. 00:05:16.21\00:05:18.15 Doug: Yeah. 00:05:18.18\00:05:19.98 Jean: So, it was handwritten, it didn't include the Ten 00:05:20.02\00:05:21.42 Commandments, which was God written. 00:05:21.45\00:05:23.12 Doug: And that was in the ark, the handwritten part that 00:05:23.15\00:05:24.85 contained the levitical laws and the ordinances was in a pocket 00:05:24.89\00:05:28.86 outside the ark. 00:05:28.89\00:05:30.43 But yeah, and so, you know, it's so important for us to 00:05:30.46\00:05:33.63 understand how to approach the Bible. 00:05:33.66\00:05:35.70 God wants the truth to be understood. 00:05:35.73\00:05:37.97 I think one reason there's so much misunderstanding is because 00:05:38.00\00:05:42.00 the truth of God's Word sets people free. 00:05:42.04\00:05:45.31 And so, if there is any document that the devil is seeking to 00:05:45.34\00:05:49.48 confuse and confound, it is the Scriptures. 00:05:49.51\00:05:52.88 And so, the devil's got so many people out there 00:05:52.91\00:05:55.02 that are wolves. 00:05:55.05\00:05:56.52 You know, Paul said, "Be careful because after my departure, 00:05:56.55\00:06:00.22 grievous wolves will come in among you." 00:06:00.26\00:06:02.99 And that they'd be teaching things to draw away disciples 00:06:03.02\00:06:05.76 after themselves. 00:06:05.79\00:06:07.23 And we've seen a lot of the misinterpretations of the Bible, 00:06:07.23\00:06:10.70 all right, they come from, you know, cultish leaders that are 00:06:10.73\00:06:13.10 trying to--they've got an agenda. 00:06:13.13\00:06:16.10 But if you read the Bible for what it's--let me throw 00:06:16.14\00:06:19.41 in a story real quick. 00:06:19.44\00:06:20.78 This helps illustrate it. 00:06:20.81\00:06:22.48 So, I'm living up in the mountains, I'm reading the 00:06:22.51\00:06:24.11 Bible, don't know much about Christianity. 00:06:24.15\00:06:28.18 I'm reading pretty much by myself. 00:06:28.22\00:06:30.65 I learned the Sabbath truth, I learned the truth about the 00:06:30.69\00:06:33.09 state of the dead, and so I haven't committed my life 00:06:33.12\00:06:38.43 to the Lord yet. 00:06:38.46\00:06:39.83 I'm wondering about these things. 00:06:39.86\00:06:41.40 I'm going to church on Sunday, but I've learned 00:06:41.43\00:06:43.26 the Sabbath truth. 00:06:43.30\00:06:44.63 But I'm convicted every Sunday, I said, "This is not the seventh 00:06:44.67\00:06:47.00 day." 00:06:47.04\00:06:48.54 While this is happening, I'm driving down the road 00:06:48.57\00:06:51.07 selling sandwiches. 00:06:51.11\00:06:53.78 I work for a company, they're out of business now, 00:06:53.81\00:06:56.01 called Darsan. 00:06:56.04\00:06:57.71 We sold premade sandwiches to the 7-Elevens. 00:06:57.75\00:07:00.55 And I'm delivering sandwiches in the desert. 00:07:00.58\00:07:02.75 There's this African-American gentleman walking down this 00:07:02.78\00:07:05.72 desert highway by himself with a bag, and it's 100 degrees out. 00:07:05.75\00:07:10.66 So, I pull over and I say, "Would you like a ride?" 00:07:10.69\00:07:14.13 He says, "Absolutely." 00:07:14.20\00:07:15.73 He hops in and he goes, "Praise the Lord," because it's an air 00:07:15.76\00:07:17.73 conditioned van. 00:07:17.77\00:07:19.57 And I said, "Are you a Christian?" 00:07:19.60\00:07:21.34 He said, "Yes." He said, "Are you?" 00:07:21.37\00:07:22.90 I said, "Yes." He said, "Praise the Lord." 00:07:22.94\00:07:25.64 And we don't drive for 60 seconds before he says, "Do you 00:07:25.67\00:07:30.15 know what day the Sabbath is?" 00:07:30.18\00:07:32.21 Well, that's an awful odd question to ask me right while 00:07:32.25\00:07:35.38 I'm driving down the road and I am convicted about keeping 00:07:35.42\00:07:38.79 the Sabbath day. 00:07:38.82\00:07:40.62 I said, "Yeah." 00:07:40.66\00:07:42.62 He said, "Well, what day do you go to church?" 00:07:42.66\00:07:44.09 I said, "Sunday." 00:07:44.13\00:07:45.86 He said, "You know what day the Sabbath is?" 00:07:45.89\00:07:47.56 I said, "Saturday." 00:07:47.60\00:07:49.06 He said, "Praise the Lord." 00:07:49.10\00:07:50.93 And I started talking to this guy, and I was so intrigued 00:07:50.97\00:07:53.90 by--he knew all the things I'd been studying. 00:07:53.94\00:07:57.31 So, I said, "Are you a Seventh Day Adventist?" 00:07:57.34\00:08:00.51 He said, "A what?" 00:08:00.54\00:08:02.11 I said, "Seventh Day Adventist." 00:08:02.14\00:08:04.31 He said, "Never heard of them." 00:08:04.35\00:08:06.28 And I stopped, we stopped and I bought him lunch, 00:08:06.31\00:08:08.85 we talked together. 00:08:08.88\00:08:10.75 He had a bag full of books that he had been reading on prophecy, 00:08:10.79\00:08:14.59 and he had been reading the same books, he'd been reading like 00:08:14.62\00:08:16.49 Daniel and the Revelation and these different things. 00:08:16.52\00:08:19.39 The Lord was leading him down the same path, but he's reading 00:08:19.43\00:08:21.86 the Bible and coming to the same conclusions. 00:08:21.90\00:08:24.67 And I got--I was really convicted and convinced that day 00:08:24.70\00:08:27.64 that if people are seeking--Jesus said if you're 00:08:27.67\00:08:29.74 seeking and you're open, He will give you the understanding. 00:08:29.77\00:08:33.41 He said, "If any man is willing to do My will, he will know of 00:08:33.44\00:08:36.48 the doctrine whether it be of God." 00:08:36.51\00:08:38.48 And so, we don't have to worry about everybody say, 00:08:38.51\00:08:40.82 "Well, you've got your truth, I've got my truth." 00:08:40.85\00:08:42.58 There is one absolute truth. 00:08:42.62\00:08:43.99 God is trying to tell us something in the Bible. 00:08:44.02\00:08:46.25 It can be understood. 00:08:46.29\00:08:47.92 Don't let the confusion in Christianity discourage you. 00:08:47.96\00:08:51.33 Jean: Amen. 00:08:51.36\00:08:52.83 Talking about that, some of those who are watching, you 00:08:52.86\00:08:54.63 might have some questions. 00:08:54.66\00:08:56.06 And we're going to try and take some live questions in our 00:08:56.10\00:08:57.97 lesson study time today. 00:08:58.00\00:08:59.40 If you have a question, just go ahead and make a comment on 00:08:59.43\00:09:01.54 Facebook, and they'll be emailing those comments to us, 00:09:01.57\00:09:04.77 and we'll try to take some of them. 00:09:04.81\00:09:06.51 Pastor Doug, we have a question that just came in, it kind of 00:09:06.54\00:09:08.58 ties in with the story that you told. 00:09:08.61\00:09:10.48 Here is somebody that is looking to know what the Bible teaches, 00:09:10.51\00:09:13.65 and Lorraine is asking, "Is there a specific time when 00:09:13.68\00:09:17.29 Sabbath begins and ends?" 00:09:17.32\00:09:19.72 Doug: Yeah, now using what we learn in this lesson, 00:09:19.75\00:09:22.56 how do you figure it out? 00:09:22.59\00:09:23.99 Do you flip a coin? 00:09:24.03\00:09:25.36 Do you do a survey of different churches? 00:09:25.39\00:09:27.30 What does the Bible say? 00:09:27.36\00:09:29.16 The Bible's very clear, it says, "From even unto even," that's 00:09:29.20\00:09:32.50 sundown to sundown, "you shall celebrate your Sabbaths," 00:09:32.53\00:09:34.84 all right? 00:09:34.87\00:09:36.17 So, that's one verse. 00:09:36.20\00:09:37.84 Then you go in the New Testament, it says, "And after 00:09:37.87\00:09:40.81 the Sabbath, after the sun had set, then they brought all the 00:09:40.84\00:09:44.85 sick to Jesus to be healed." 00:09:44.88\00:09:46.35 Because even then, they were concerned about His healing 00:09:46.38\00:09:49.15 on the Sabbath. 00:09:49.18\00:09:50.89 So, the Sabbath begins and ends not at 12 midnight, that's Roman 00:09:50.92\00:09:53.96 timing, not at sunrise. 00:09:53.99\00:09:57.43 But when the sun goes down, that was when they marked 00:09:57.46\00:09:59.33 the beginning and the end of the day. 00:09:59.36\00:10:01.43 And in Genesis, it says, "The evening and the morning." 00:10:01.46\00:10:05.60 Jean: Right, so the first--the dark part of the day 00:10:05.63\00:10:07.90 was the first part, and the light part of the day was the 00:10:07.94\00:10:10.57 second part of the 24-hour period. 00:10:10.61\00:10:13.21 Usually, we think of it the other way. 00:10:13.24\00:10:14.68 We think the light part first, but no, the day began at sunset. 00:10:14.71\00:10:17.78 So, from the Bible, the Sabbath is Friday evening at sunset, and 00:10:17.81\00:10:22.65 it goes all the way through till Saturday evening at sunset. 00:10:22.68\00:10:25.39 That would be the biblical Sabbath. 00:10:25.42\00:10:27.02 Now, in our lesson, we're talking about how 00:10:27.06\00:10:28.79 to interpret the Bible. 00:10:28.82\00:10:30.43 And it's interesting to note that there are about 6,000 00:10:30.46\00:10:34.10 languages that are in the world today. 00:10:34.10\00:10:37.40 And of these, the Bible has been translated in its entirety into 00:10:37.43\00:10:41.54 about 600 of these languages. 00:10:41.57\00:10:44.07 The New Testament has been translated into more than 00:10:44.11\00:10:46.41 2,5000 languages. 00:10:46.44\00:10:48.78 Now, when we say 6,000 languages, it doesn't mean that 00:10:48.81\00:10:51.21 that's the only language that those people understand. 00:10:51.25\00:10:54.58 Many of those who speak some of these 6,000 languages, they 00:10:54.62\00:10:57.85 might have a second language that they understand. 00:10:57.89\00:11:01.09 So the Bible, for the most part, is available in all of the main 00:11:01.12\00:11:04.49 languages that are spoken around the world. 00:11:04.53\00:11:06.86 Doug: Karen and I were in New Guinea, I think we've been 00:11:06.90\00:11:08.50 there twice now. 00:11:08.53\00:11:10.07 And of those 6,000 languages, 800 of them are in New Guinea. 00:11:10.10\00:11:14.90 All the people are divided by very steep mountains and 00:11:14.94\00:11:17.94 valleys, and they just spent generations kind of developing 00:11:17.97\00:11:20.54 their own variations. 00:11:20.58\00:11:22.51 But they understand each other by speaking 00:11:22.54\00:11:24.21 a certain pigeon English. 00:11:24.25\00:11:26.38 And so, the Scriptures are translated in a language that 00:11:26.41\00:11:31.75 most New Guineans understand. 00:11:31.79\00:11:34.66 Jean: Now, of course, we take the Bible for granted. 00:11:34.69\00:11:36.16 Today in English, I don't know how many translations and 00:11:36.19\00:11:38.43 versions there might be in the English language, but it wasn't 00:11:38.46\00:11:41.33 always the case. 00:11:41.36\00:11:42.90 Matter of fact, just less than 1,000 years ago, 600, 700 years 00:11:42.93\00:11:46.63 ago, it was difficult for the average person to find a copy 00:11:46.67\00:11:50.34 of the Bible in Europe. 00:11:50.37\00:11:52.11 But really thanks to the Reformation, the printing press, 00:11:52.14\00:11:55.34 and just the explosion of missionary activity that we see 00:11:55.38\00:11:58.75 especially in the early 1800s, the Bible now is available just 00:11:58.78\00:12:01.85 about to anyone who is wanting to discover truth, wanting to 00:12:01.88\00:12:05.65 seek the Lord through reading His Word. 00:12:05.69\00:12:08.06 And we can be grateful for that, really the Reformation had an 00:12:08.09\00:12:10.83 important part to play in the translating of the Bible in all 00:12:10.86\00:12:15.46 these different languages. 00:12:15.50\00:12:17.50 Doug: That's right. Oh, go ahead. 00:12:17.53\00:12:19.60 Jean: Yeah, just lead to our next section here, if you're 00:12:19.63\00:12:21.44 following along with your lesson, we're looking at Sunday. 00:12:21.47\00:12:23.57 And Sunday's lesson is "Understanding the Scriptures." 00:12:23.61\00:12:26.37 We have a key passage of Scripture in 2 Timothy 00:12:26.41\00:12:29.08 chapter 3, verse 16. 00:12:29.11\00:12:30.71 And it says, "All Scripture is given by the inspiration 00:12:30.75\00:12:33.52 of God." 00:12:33.55\00:12:34.98 Now, Pastor Doug, some people have asked, what does this 00:12:35.02\00:12:36.45 inspiration mean? 00:12:36.48\00:12:38.19 I think the word "inspiration" there means God-breathed. 00:12:38.22\00:12:40.66 Doug: Yeah. 00:12:40.69\00:12:42.22 Yeah, the Lord through the Spirit, He gave life to His 00:12:42.26\00:12:46.66 Word, and using human instrumentalities who might 00:12:46.70\00:12:50.30 incorporate their vocabulary and experience, but the message was 00:12:50.33\00:12:53.54 the message of God He gave through them. 00:12:53.57\00:12:56.44 Jean: It almost seems like the same breath of life that 00:12:56.47\00:12:58.97 brought life to Adam when God formed him out of the clay, that 00:12:59.01\00:13:02.44 same breath, that spirit is present in the Word of God. 00:13:02.48\00:13:05.91 That as we read, there is life found in it. 00:13:05.95\00:13:08.32 So, 2 Timothy says all Scripture is given by the inspiration of 00:13:08.35\00:13:10.92 God. 00:13:10.95\00:13:12.39 It's profitable for doctrine, that would be of teaching. 00:13:12.42\00:13:14.66 It is for reproof, telling us where we are going wrong. 00:13:14.69\00:13:18.53 Also for correction, how do we get on the right path. 00:13:18.56\00:13:21.06 And for instruction in righteousness or right doing. 00:13:21.10\00:13:24.23 And then I like verse 17, "That the man or the woman of God may 00:13:24.27\00:13:26.97 be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." 00:13:27.00\00:13:30.27 Sometimes, Pastor Doug, people say, "Well, how do you know that 00:13:30.31\00:13:33.34 everything in the Bible--maybe there's some important parts 00:13:33.38\00:13:36.14 that are missing that's not in the Bible that we really need?" 00:13:36.18\00:13:39.25 Well, this verse says everything we need spiritually to be 00:13:39.28\00:13:42.25 complete, to be a fully mature Christian, is found in the 00:13:42.28\00:13:46.65 Scripture, is found in the Bible. 00:13:46.69\00:13:48.42 Doug: Yeah, I always like to keep it simple. 00:13:48.46\00:13:51.73 And I love the Bible verses that keep it simple. 00:13:51.76\00:13:54.86 It's like in Micah, where he says, "He's shown the old man 00:13:54.93\00:13:57.43 what is good, and what does the Lord require of thee? 00:13:57.47\00:14:00.34 Do justly, love mercy, walk humbly with your God." 00:14:00.37\00:14:04.77 Well, there's three things, you can break it down to two things. 00:14:04.81\00:14:07.94 Love the Lord with all your heart, love your neighbor. 00:14:07.98\00:14:12.15 If we have the principles right, then everything else goes right. 00:14:12.18\00:14:15.88 But the Bible then breaks things down. 00:14:15.92\00:14:17.82 The love your God, love your neighbor, Ten Commandments. 00:14:17.85\00:14:20.92 But then you start going through the laws in Leviticus and in 00:14:20.96\00:14:25.29 Exodus, it goes into more detail about what does it mean to love 00:14:25.33\00:14:28.60 God and to love your neighbor. 00:14:28.63\00:14:30.40 And it says, "Well, if you're--even if your enemy's ox 00:14:30.43\00:14:32.77 wanders off, bring it back. 00:14:32.80\00:14:34.54 That's how you love your neighbor." 00:14:34.57\00:14:36.07 And so, it continues to get broader, wider, more detail, 00:14:36.10\00:14:39.74 more specific. 00:14:39.77\00:14:41.58 And you know, Jesus, the Sermon on the Mount, of course He goes 00:14:41.61\00:14:44.35 into beautiful detail. 00:14:44.38\00:14:46.15 And what He's really doing is Christ is expounding on the 00:14:46.18\00:14:50.02 principles of Moses's law using the principles of love. 00:14:50.05\00:14:54.79 You know, he said, "You've heard it say, you know, 00:14:54.82\00:14:58.86 you're not to kill. 00:14:58.89\00:15:00.56 So, I say don't even be angry with your brother without 00:15:00.60\00:15:02.96 a cause," you know? 00:15:03.00\00:15:04.47 Jean: Commit murder in your heart, yeah. 00:15:04.50\00:15:06.10 Doug: And so, the Scriptures just continue with the main 00:15:06.13\00:15:07.64 principle, love, God is love. 00:15:07.67\00:15:09.74 And it continues to fan out like that. 00:15:09.77\00:15:12.21 Jean: Now, we do have a question that Jean has emailed 00:15:12.24\00:15:15.11 to us, and the question is regarding the book of Job. 00:15:15.14\00:15:18.58 And she asks, "Is the book of Job literal or is it a parable?" 00:15:18.61\00:15:23.92 Doug: Well, we think the book of Job is literal because it 00:15:23.95\00:15:27.02 gives the very specific names. 00:15:27.06\00:15:31.29 These individuals lived in the area of Edom and you do find 00:15:31.33\00:15:35.76 their names appearing other times in the genealogy of Esau. 00:15:35.80\00:15:41.30 So, we have every reason--and the context of the story, 00:15:41.34\00:15:45.47 the specifics. 00:15:45.51\00:15:47.28 Now, there's incredible poetry in the way that Job is written. 00:15:47.31\00:15:50.41 Job was probably the first book that was written by Moses. 00:15:50.45\00:15:54.25 And, but it really--the whole great controversy is in the book 00:15:54.28\00:15:57.55 of Job, so I don't think it's just a parable. 00:15:57.59\00:16:01.89 There are certain allegory lessons in Job, but it's a real 00:16:01.92\00:16:04.89 story, just like there's an allegory in the experience 00:16:04.93\00:16:07.73 of Joseph. 00:16:07.76\00:16:09.06 Joseph really lived, but Joseph's life was somewhat an 00:16:09.10\00:16:11.73 allegory of Christ, sold by his brothers, yet he forgave. 00:16:11.77\00:16:16.71 The experience of Job shows the battle between Christ and Satan, 00:16:16.74\00:16:21.28 where you've got a person's heart is the battleground. 00:16:21.31\00:16:24.58 And so, it's a very real story, but there's a lot 00:16:24.61\00:16:26.98 of lessons in there. 00:16:27.02\00:16:28.78 Jean: Do we have any idea, Pastor Doug, as to the timeframe 00:16:28.82\00:16:31.59 when the story of Job might've taken place? 00:16:31.62\00:16:33.72 Doug: Based on how long Job lived, you look at Abraham's, 00:16:33.76\00:16:38.09 you know, father lived about 200 years. 00:16:38.13\00:16:41.16 And Job, he probably lived just shortly after the time of Esau 00:16:41.20\00:16:45.83 because you've got Isaac is living 185 years. 00:16:45.87\00:16:49.54 It talks about the length of their lives in the wording, 00:16:49.57\00:16:52.47 the vocabulary. 00:16:52.51\00:16:54.91 You know, probably he's living I'm guessing 100, 150 years 00:16:54.94\00:17:01.28 after Esau is pretty close. 00:17:01.32\00:17:04.25 Jean: Close to the time that Israel was or the children of 00:17:04.29\00:17:06.55 Israel were in Egypt, sometime during there. 00:17:06.59\00:17:08.66 Doug: And so, Moses may have gotten some of that story 00:17:08.69\00:17:10.39 from his father-in-law. 00:17:10.43\00:17:11.83 Jean: Yeah, yeah, very interesting. 00:17:11.86\00:17:13.93 All right, so when we're talking about the Bible, we find that 00:17:13.96\00:17:16.16 the Bible gives us three clear emphasis or guidelines. 00:17:16.20\00:17:19.93 First, it witnesses to us of God's work, what God has done 00:17:19.97\00:17:23.04 throughout human history. 00:17:23.07\00:17:25.44 It reveals to us the way of salvation. 00:17:25.47\00:17:27.88 I think that's the most important part of the Bible, 00:17:27.91\00:17:30.31 shows us how we can be saved. 00:17:30.35\00:17:31.95 It also thirdly then instructs us in the ways of righteousness. 00:17:31.98\00:17:35.48 How do we live as Christians? 00:17:35.52\00:17:36.99 How do we live a life that brings honor and glory to God? 00:17:37.02\00:17:39.92 So, these are the three main themes that you can find 00:17:39.95\00:17:42.42 throughout the Bible. 00:17:42.46\00:17:43.99 It talks about God's dealing with nations 00:17:44.03\00:17:45.89 and individuals in history. 00:17:45.93\00:17:47.66 It talks about how it can be saved and how we can live a 00:17:47.66\00:17:50.40 righteous life. 00:17:50.43\00:17:51.90 Doug: Yeah, absolutely. 00:17:51.93\00:17:53.34 One of my favorite verses in the Bible, well, if you go to 00:17:53.37\00:17:57.41 Deuteronomy chapter 32, here, you know, 00:17:57.44\00:18:00.84 Moses is at the end of his life. 00:18:00.88\00:18:02.54 He's written at this point the book of Job, Exodus, Leviticus, 00:18:02.58\00:18:07.42 Genesis, Numbers, Deuteronomy. 00:18:07.45\00:18:09.58 I got my order wrong there, but he's got--you got those six 00:18:09.62\00:18:11.49 books. 00:18:11.52\00:18:12.89 He's about to die, he's going to climb a mountain and die, 00:18:12.92\00:18:15.06 God has told him. 00:18:15.09\00:18:16.46 And he says in chapter 32, "Set your heart on all the words that 00:18:16.49\00:18:21.86 I testify among you today, that you shall command your children 00:18:21.90\00:18:26.23 to be careful to observe them, all the words of this law." 00:18:26.27\00:18:30.64 And that word there means the Torah. 00:18:30.67\00:18:32.57 "For it is not a futile thing for you because it is your life. 00:18:32.61\00:18:37.11 By these words you will prolong your days in the land you cross 00:18:37.15\00:18:40.32 over Jordan to possess." 00:18:40.35\00:18:42.12 This is a life and death issue that they understood. 00:18:42.15\00:18:44.99 You can't do them if you don't understand them. 00:18:45.02\00:18:46.99 So, understanding the teaching of the Bible, 00:18:47.02\00:18:49.09 rightly interpreting the Bible is life and death. 00:18:49.12\00:18:51.69 And then I love--and this isn't in the lesson, but it's one of 00:18:51.73\00:18:54.60 my favorite verses in the Bible, Deuteronomy 5:29. 00:18:54.63\00:18:58.83 It says, "Oh." 00:18:58.87\00:19:00.44 I like that word, "Oh." 00:19:00.47\00:19:02.47 It's kind of like John 3:16, "So, God so loved the world." 00:19:02.50\00:19:06.54 And here God says, "Oh, that they had such a heart in them 00:19:06.57\00:19:10.85 that they would fear Me and keep all of My commandments always, 00:19:10.88\00:19:15.42 that it might be well with them and their children forever." 00:19:15.45\00:19:19.45 It says, "Forever that they might love Me, keep My 00:19:19.49\00:19:22.82 commandments," not some of them, "all of them for their good and 00:19:22.86\00:19:26.26 their children." 00:19:26.29\00:19:27.66 And that's really what He said also in Deuteronomy 32. 00:19:27.73\00:19:29.90 Jean: Now, a lot of the Old Testament has to do 00:19:29.93\00:19:31.47 with the nation of Israel. 00:19:31.50\00:19:32.87 And people have wondered, well, why do we have so much about 00:19:32.90\00:19:34.97 Israel? 00:19:35.00\00:19:36.47 You got the whole Old Testament, you got the prophets speaking to 00:19:36.50\00:19:38.57 Israel primarily, and it just seems like a focus on a nation. 00:19:38.61\00:19:43.18 Well, I think Paul gives us a very good answer to this in 00:19:43.21\00:19:46.38 Romans chapter 3, verse 1 to 2. 00:19:46.41\00:19:48.92 And he's talking to the Gentile believers, but he's also talking 00:19:48.95\00:19:52.89 to some Jewish believers. 00:19:52.92\00:19:54.22 He says, "What advantage then has the Jew? 00:19:54.26\00:19:56.02 Or what profit has circumcision?" 00:19:56.06\00:19:58.13 Then he says in verse 2, Romans 3, "Much in every way, chiefly 00:19:58.16\00:20:03.06 because to them were committed the oracles of God." 00:20:03.10\00:20:06.00 So, why do we find so much emphasis on Israel 00:20:06.03\00:20:08.37 in the Old Testament? 00:20:08.40\00:20:09.70 Well, God was giving His will, his Word 00:20:09.74\00:20:12.64 through the Jewish nation. 00:20:12.67\00:20:13.98 They were to be His missionaries to take the gospel 00:20:14.01\00:20:16.31 to the whole world. 00:20:16.34\00:20:17.81 Now, of course, the New Testament times that God has a 00:20:17.85\00:20:20.35 spiritual Israel, those who believe in Christ, they become 00:20:20.38\00:20:23.25 part of spiritual Israel. 00:20:23.28\00:20:24.62 What is our mission today? 00:20:24.65\00:20:26.15 Well, similar to the mission of those living before Christ came, 00:20:26.19\00:20:29.76 that is to prepare the world now for the second coming of Jesus. 00:20:29.79\00:20:33.80 In the Old Testament, they were to prepare the world 00:20:33.83\00:20:35.73 for the first coming. 00:20:35.76\00:20:37.17 Our work now is to prepare the world for the second coming. 00:20:37.20\00:20:39.83 Doug: Jesus makes a stunning statement when He's talking 00:20:39.87\00:20:42.50 to the woman at the well. 00:20:42.54\00:20:44.41 She starts to argue with him about, "Well, you know, should 00:20:44.44\00:20:47.91 we worship on Mount Gerizim?" 00:20:47.94\00:20:49.48 And the Samaritans believed in the five books of Moses. 00:20:49.51\00:20:52.58 And Moses had said, "When you enter the Promised Land, 00:20:52.61\00:20:54.98 you're to go to Mount Gerizim and declare the blessings 00:20:55.02\00:20:57.05 and the cursings." 00:20:57.09\00:20:58.39 Mount Ebal, Mount Gerizim. 00:20:58.42\00:20:59.79 And so, they thought, "We've got Scripture for this." 00:20:59.82\00:21:01.82 And you know, Jesus of course said, "Well, it's Jerusalem." 00:21:01.86\00:21:05.16 Because in Samuel, that was the place that was chosen 00:21:05.19\00:21:09.06 for David to build the temple. 00:21:09.10\00:21:11.37 And Jesus said, "Salvation is of the Jews." 00:21:11.40\00:21:15.44 In other words, the Jewish nation, God had given to them to 00:21:15.47\00:21:18.97 be the guardians of the oracles of truth. 00:21:19.01\00:21:21.14 It didn't mean God was saving every Jew. 00:21:21.18\00:21:23.51 Certainly there was good and bad in every people. 00:21:23.55\00:21:26.15 God told Israel, "I'm not saving you because you're better 00:21:26.18\00:21:28.25 than other nations." 00:21:28.28\00:21:29.58 He said, "In fact, you're a stubborn and 00:21:29.62\00:21:31.09 a stiff-necked people." 00:21:31.12\00:21:32.42 He probably would've said that if He had saved 00:21:32.45\00:21:34.96 Scandinavians or Australians. 00:21:34.99\00:21:36.76 It doesn't matter who it was, human hearts are the same 00:21:36.79\00:21:39.76 pretty much everywhere. 00:21:39.79\00:21:41.30 But He needed to take a nation. 00:21:41.33\00:21:42.76 He chose Abraham because of his faithfulness, his descendants. 00:21:42.80\00:21:45.93 They would be the ones to be the recipients, the guardians of the 00:21:45.97\00:21:49.80 Word, and that they would then declare that Word and announce 00:21:49.84\00:21:54.48 the Messiah when he came. 00:21:54.51\00:21:56.38 And at Pentecost, really it was Jews announcing the Messiah 00:21:56.41\00:21:59.81 to Jews, who then took it to every nation. 00:21:59.85\00:22:01.95 Jean: Right. 00:22:01.98\00:22:03.42 And we have a question that came in, it's a little off the 00:22:03.45\00:22:04.85 subject, but it's kind of an interesting question, 00:22:04.89\00:22:06.86 so I'm going to ask it. 00:22:06.89\00:22:08.19 Venus is asking, "What is the significance of Aaron's walking 00:22:08.22\00:22:11.26 stick in the ark of the--in the ark of God or the Ark 00:22:11.29\00:22:14.73 of the Covenant?" 00:22:14.73\00:22:16.20 Why did God instruct Aaron to put his walking stick or Moses 00:22:16.23\00:22:18.90 to put Aaron's walking stick in the ark, 00:22:18.93\00:22:21.37 where the Ten Commandments is? 00:22:21.40\00:22:22.74 You can't think of anything more holy or sacred than the Ten 00:22:22.77\00:22:25.31 Commandments, but what is Aaron's rod doing there? 00:22:25.34\00:22:28.24 Doug: You know, the patriarch of a clan, they were the kings, 00:22:28.28\00:22:33.58 the nomads back then. 00:22:33.62\00:22:36.18 And the staff was really the authority, 00:22:36.22\00:22:39.45 it was sometimes used for discipline. 00:22:39.49\00:22:42.59 You'll remember that when Judah wanted to give a pledge to Tamar 00:22:42.62\00:22:46.86 that he was going to send the money, he gave his staff, 00:22:46.90\00:22:49.40 which was a big mistake. 00:22:49.43\00:22:51.97 And whenever they did a miracle in the days of Noah--or Moses 00:22:52.00\00:22:57.17 and Aaron, they threw down the staff. 00:22:57.21\00:22:59.01 It represented authority. 00:22:59.04\00:23:00.78 Well, one day, some leaders, I think it was Naboth and Abirim, 00:23:00.81\00:23:03.95 they were challenging the authority of Moses. 00:23:03.98\00:23:06.82 And he said, "I want the 12 leaders of Israel 00:23:06.85\00:23:09.88 to bring their staffs." 00:23:09.92\00:23:11.22 Well, these were the patriarchs of each tribe. 00:23:11.25\00:23:14.42 And God did a miracle for--they brought their staffs and put 00:23:14.46\00:23:18.46 them in the--in the tabernacle. 00:23:18.49\00:23:20.36 And overnight, the staff of Aaron, it put forth shoots, 00:23:20.40\00:23:27.07 leaves, blossoms, and bore almonds in 24 hours. 00:23:27.10\00:23:31.51 And here this dead stick came to life and bore fruit. 00:23:31.54\00:23:35.84 They all recognized that is a miracle. 00:23:35.88\00:23:37.41 And they all had unique insignias on their staff of 00:23:37.45\00:23:40.65 their tribes. 00:23:40.68\00:23:42.12 And so, it was a symbol of authority. 00:23:42.15\00:23:44.22 And that's why it says, "Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me," 00:23:44.25\00:23:47.46 Psalm 23. 00:23:47.49\00:23:48.96 So, the rod of Moses or Aaron, it's interchangeable. 00:23:48.99\00:23:52.29 Being put inside the ark, it meant that God speaks through 00:23:52.33\00:23:57.00 and he designates leadership. 00:23:57.03\00:23:58.87 Jean: Yes, and of course Aaron was the priest, 00:23:58.90\00:24:01.54 the levitical priest, it was in the family. 00:24:01.57\00:24:04.61 And that was part of the controversy that arose. 00:24:04.64\00:24:06.68 It says, "Well, why are you just the one that does the work 00:24:06.71\00:24:09.01 of the priest?" 00:24:09.04\00:24:10.55 Doug: We're also holy. Jean: We're also holy. 00:24:10.58\00:24:12.25 We're a whole nation of holy people. 00:24:12.28\00:24:14.05 And God said, "No, I've chosen the tribe of Levi to do a 00:24:14.08\00:24:15.68 special work in the priesthood." 00:24:15.72\00:24:17.12 It's also interesting that you have a dead stick that in the 00:24:17.15\00:24:19.89 sanctuary suddenly buds and brings forth fruit. 00:24:19.92\00:24:23.96 Likewise spiritually, without Christ, we're dead. 00:24:23.99\00:24:27.73 But connected to Christ, we're able to produce fruit, 00:24:27.76\00:24:30.80 and that would be the fruit of the Spirit. 00:24:30.83\00:24:32.53 Doug: Come alive, that's right. 00:24:32.57\00:24:33.90 Jean: A life that brings glory to God. 00:24:33.94\00:24:35.57 Monday, the title of the lesson there is entitled 00:24:35.60\00:24:37.67 "Words and Their Meaning." 00:24:37.71\00:24:39.11 And for us to correctly understand the words in the 00:24:39.14\00:24:41.64 Bible, it's helpful for us to study their usage in other parts 00:24:41.68\00:24:45.28 of the Bible. 00:24:45.31\00:24:46.78 Doug: Yeah, and looking where--I think it was Dr. Leslie 00:24:46.82\00:24:51.15 Harding who taught for years at the Andrews Seminary. 00:24:51.19\00:24:55.46 He said one of the best ways to understand how to interpret 00:24:55.49\00:24:58.03 a word in the Bible is look at the first time 00:24:58.06\00:25:01.00 the word is introduced. 00:25:01.03\00:25:02.56 It sort of becomes a template for other times 00:25:02.60\00:25:05.13 you find those words. 00:25:05.17\00:25:06.47 So, that's one principle. 00:25:06.50\00:25:08.00 And then compare it with other verses where the word is used. 00:25:08.04\00:25:10.81 Now, I think you've got some examples there for we're going 00:25:10.84\00:25:12.87 to look at the word "mercy" and then "shalom." 00:25:12.91\00:25:14.78 Why don't you take mercy and I'll do shalom? 00:25:14.81\00:25:17.05 Jean: Yeah, the word "mercy." 00:25:17.08\00:25:18.41 Of course, we find it throughout the Bible, but just a couple of 00:25:18.45\00:25:20.65 passages that give us a broader understanding of God's mercy, 00:25:20.68\00:25:24.35 1 Kings chapter 3, verse 6. 00:25:24.39\00:25:26.19 Solomon is praying and he said, "You show great mercy to 00:25:26.22\00:25:29.29 Your servant David, my father." 00:25:29.32\00:25:30.93 And that, of course, is at the dedication of the temple. 00:25:30.96\00:25:33.90 And you can see in the life of David how God revealed His mercy 00:25:33.93\00:25:37.90 time and time again when David would make a mistake and he'd 00:25:37.93\00:25:40.44 repent, God would show mercy. 00:25:40.47\00:25:42.00 And God used him in a mighty way to build up the nation of Israel 00:25:42.04\00:25:46.31 and to prepare for the building of the sanctuary. 00:25:46.34\00:25:49.08 You've got Psalm 66, verse 20, "Blessed be God, who has not 00:25:49.11\00:25:52.38 turned away my prayer, nor His mercy from me." 00:25:52.41\00:25:56.45 You know, Pastor Doug, I think one of the most favorite phrases 00:25:56.48\00:25:59.12 or most common phrases that's found in the Psalms 00:25:59.15\00:26:01.89 is the phrase "his mercy abides forever." 00:26:01.92\00:26:04.89 His mercy abides forever. 00:26:04.93\00:26:06.59 So, God is a God of mercy, and we can see that even 00:26:06.63\00:26:08.80 in Old Testament times. 00:26:08.83\00:26:10.30 And then Micah chapter 7, verse 20, "You will give truth to 00:26:10.33\00:26:13.20 Jacob and mercy to Abraham, which He has sworn to your 00:26:13.23\00:26:17.81 fathers from days of old." 00:26:17.84\00:26:19.67 So, there we find God giving mercy to those who trust in Him, 00:26:19.71\00:26:23.21 those who follow His commandments. 00:26:23.24\00:26:26.28 Doug: Yeah, and that's I think the key that you said, 00:26:26.31\00:26:27.95 followed His commandments. 00:26:27.98\00:26:29.28 In those verses you read, 1 Kings 3:6, it says, 00:26:29.32\00:26:32.95 "Mercy in truth." 00:26:32.99\00:26:35.36 You go to Psalm 57, verse 3, it says, "He'd send His mercy 00:26:35.39\00:26:39.69 and His truth." 00:26:39.73\00:26:41.26 And then you just read another one where it talked about--it's 00:26:41.30\00:26:43.70 Micah 7, it said, "Mercy to Abraham and truth, truth to 00:26:43.73\00:26:47.50 Jacob and mercy to--" So, one way God connects His mercy 00:26:47.54\00:26:51.47 is the Word of truth. 00:26:51.51\00:26:53.58 He's showing mercy and truth. 00:26:53.61\00:26:55.58 I said I'd let you teach and I jumped in, 00:26:55.61\00:26:57.41 I couldn't help myself. 00:26:57.45\00:26:59.11 Jean: No, that's good. Doug: I'm sorry. 00:26:59.15\00:27:01.02 And then we've got a famous word. 00:27:01.05\00:27:02.62 You know, people around the word know the word "shalom." 00:27:02.65\00:27:06.12 And I heard someone say once that one of the best ways to 00:27:06.15\00:27:10.39 understand shalom for the Jew is to understand aloha 00:27:10.43\00:27:13.46 for the Hawaiian. 00:27:13.50\00:27:15.13 So, aloha was it's hello, it's goodbye, it's love. 00:27:15.16\00:27:20.14 And now shalom is a little different, of course, than that, 00:27:20.17\00:27:22.50 but it is a word that has many meanings. 00:27:22.54\00:27:25.41 When you greet someone you say shalom. 00:27:25.44\00:27:28.08 And when you say goodbye, you say shalom. 00:27:28.11\00:27:30.95 Jerusalem is named City of Peace, Jeru-Shalom. 00:27:30.98\00:27:36.95 You've got even Absalom was the son of peace. 00:27:36.99\00:27:41.12 Solomon, his name is similar also to the word "shalom." 00:27:41.16\00:27:45.73 It was--it was a greeting of blessing that was incorporated. 00:27:45.76\00:27:49.73 And when God said--and this is very famous, many people know 00:27:49.76\00:27:52.90 the levitical blessing. 00:27:52.93\00:27:54.90 You find if in Numbers 6:24 through 26, said, "This is the 00:27:54.94\00:27:58.77 blessing to put on my people. 00:27:58.81\00:28:00.64 The Lord bless you and keep you. 00:28:00.68\00:28:02.48 The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you. 00:28:02.51\00:28:06.25 The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace." 00:28:06.28\00:28:10.42 And it ends with that word "shalom." 00:28:10.45\00:28:13.32 And the Lord--Psalm 29:11, "The Lord will give strength 00:28:13.36\00:28:16.66 to His people. 00:28:16.69\00:28:17.99 The Lord will bless His people with peace." 00:28:18.03\00:28:20.06 Now, for the Jew who spent many years wandering, they never 00:28:20.10\00:28:24.90 could settle down it seems like, and then they were slaves 00:28:24.93\00:28:27.87 for years. 00:28:27.90\00:28:29.50 Their longing of their heart was to settle down, every man to be 00:28:29.54\00:28:32.24 under his vine and his fig tree, to have springs of water, 00:28:32.27\00:28:36.38 and to live in peace. 00:28:36.41\00:28:38.28 And so, it's a picture of heaven, but it's also a picture 00:28:38.31\00:28:41.68 of the peace. 00:28:41.72\00:28:43.02 Jesus is called the prince of peace. 00:28:43.05\00:28:45.25 And Isaiah 9:6, "Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given. 00:28:45.29\00:28:51.06 The government will be on His shoulder. 00:28:51.09\00:28:52.89 His name will be called wonderful counselor, the mighty 00:28:52.93\00:28:56.40 God, the everlasting Father, the prince of peace." 00:28:56.43\00:29:01.10 So, Jesus is the essence, he embodies that peace. 00:29:01.14\00:29:05.41 And one more thing while we're talking about words, 00:29:05.44\00:29:08.44 when you're--you know, big word is love when 00:29:08.48\00:29:11.68 we're talking about words. 00:29:11.71\00:29:13.35 And I think just in the Greek, not even going to the Hebrew, 00:29:13.38\00:29:16.75 there are four words that are used for love. 00:29:16.79\00:29:20.16 And you've got eros, and that's more like a romantic love, 00:29:20.19\00:29:24.49 it's where we get the word "erotic." 00:29:24.53\00:29:26.03 It was a romantic love. 00:29:26.06\00:29:27.66 Phileo, and that meant a brotherly love, where you 00:29:27.66\00:29:31.83 have--you know, it was William Penn, he established 00:29:31.87\00:29:35.90 Philadelphia, he wanted it to be the city of brotherly love. 00:29:35.94\00:29:39.47 Then you have storge, that meant an unconditional or a family, a 00:29:39.51\00:29:43.35 familial love. 00:29:43.38\00:29:45.21 And then the famous one is the agape, the sacrificial, the 00:29:45.25\00:29:49.15 emphatic love, where you're feeling for another one, 00:29:49.18\00:29:54.89 a self-sacrificing love. 00:29:54.92\00:29:56.73 Now, you had the example there in John-- 00:29:56.76\00:29:59.53 Jean: Yeah, it's an amazing example that you find in John 00:29:59.56\00:30:01.86 chapter 21 of how in the original Greek, 00:30:01.90\00:30:05.10 different words are used for love. 00:30:05.13\00:30:07.44 It's a fairly well known story. 00:30:07.47\00:30:09.20 This is after the resurrection, where Jesus met with the 00:30:09.24\00:30:11.14 disciples by the sea of Galilee. 00:30:11.17\00:30:13.84 And Peter, along with all the other disciples, are there. 00:30:13.88\00:30:17.01 And after that had breakfast together, Jesus asked Peter--and 00:30:17.05\00:30:20.28 this is John chapter 21, verse 15. 00:30:20.32\00:30:23.02 Jesus said to Peter, "Simon son of Jonah, do you love Me more 00:30:23.05\00:30:26.32 than these?" 00:30:26.35\00:30:27.66 Now, you'll remember Peter had said before the crucifixion, 00:30:27.69\00:30:30.39 "Though all men shall desert Thee, I'll never leave You. 00:30:30.43\00:30:33.43 I'm ready to die for You." 00:30:33.46\00:30:34.83 Now, of course, you know what happened. 00:30:34.83\00:30:36.26 Peter did deny Jesus, so Jesus says, "Peter, do you love Me 00:30:36.30\00:30:39.57 more than these?" more than the other disciples. 00:30:39.60\00:30:42.20 Now, the word that Jesus uses here for "do you love Me?" 00:30:42.24\00:30:46.07 he uses the word "agape." 00:30:46.11\00:30:48.11 And as you say, Pastor Doug, that is the love of God. 00:30:48.14\00:30:50.55 That is this unselfish, self-sacrificing love. 00:30:50.58\00:30:54.25 Peter responds to what Jesus says and says, "Yes Lord, you 00:30:54.28\00:30:58.05 know that I love You." 00:30:58.09\00:30:59.72 But he doesn't use the word "agape," he uses the word for 00:30:59.75\00:31:02.22 brotherly love, philos. 00:31:02.26\00:31:04.39 And it's kind of interesting that each time Jesus asked, he 00:31:04.43\00:31:08.03 said, "Do you agape Me?" 00:31:08.06\00:31:10.03 Peter responded and said, "Lord, I philos Thee. 00:31:10.07\00:31:12.73 I, you know, brotherly love. 00:31:12.77\00:31:14.20 The best human love that I can have, I give to You. 00:31:14.24\00:31:17.71 But my love does not come close to Your love for me." 00:31:17.74\00:31:21.14 And Jesus asked twice, "Peter, do you agape Me?" 00:31:21.18\00:31:24.68 And Peter says, "I philos You." 00:31:24.71\00:31:27.18 And then the third time, Jesus says, "Do you philos Me?" 00:31:27.22\00:31:30.29 Peter says, "Yes Lord, I philos You." 00:31:30.32\00:31:31.89 So, it's as if Jesus is trying to draw Peter's understanding 00:31:31.92\00:31:35.42 to His love. 00:31:35.46\00:31:37.53 "And do you know how much I love you?" 00:31:37.56\00:31:39.46 is in essence what Jesus is saying. 00:31:39.49\00:31:40.86 So, you can find that by looking at the original words, and it 00:31:40.90\00:31:43.77 just brings a whole lot more meaning to the Word of God. 00:31:43.80\00:31:46.67 Doug: Yeah. 00:31:46.70\00:31:48.00 And just jump in if you get a question from someone. 00:31:48.04\00:31:51.07 In the next section, it talks about repetition, word patterns, 00:31:51.11\00:31:55.34 and meanings. 00:31:55.38\00:31:57.11 And it's very helpful to know that there was no punctuation in 00:31:57.15\00:32:01.22 the Hebrew. 00:32:01.25\00:32:02.98 So, when you're reading--as well as the Greek, actually. 00:32:03.02\00:32:06.02 And so, they had different ways of creating emphasis starting 00:32:06.05\00:32:09.79 and stopping. 00:32:09.82\00:32:11.33 There's no problem if you understand and you read Hebrew 00:32:11.36\00:32:12.96 to know what the text is saying. 00:32:12.99\00:32:15.66 But one of the ways, you know, we when we say something--and 00:32:15.70\00:32:18.90 it's interesting today where everybody texting everybody, 00:32:18.93\00:32:21.90 we've kind of created a whole new language. 00:32:21.94\00:32:23.47 But you know, instead of saying, "This is so funny, I just 00:32:23.51\00:32:28.54 couldn't help myself," you just say LOL, that means 00:32:28.58\00:32:31.28 I laughed out loud. 00:32:31.31\00:32:32.81 And so, we've got these abbreviations. 00:32:32.85\00:32:35.12 Or you just put an exclamation mark. 00:32:35.15\00:32:37.29 You might just say exclamation mark and we know 00:32:37.32\00:32:39.72 that's emphasis. 00:32:39.75\00:32:42.42 One of the ways they would emphasize something is through 00:32:42.46\00:32:44.79 the repetition of words. 00:32:44.83\00:32:47.03 And maybe you could read, for instance, Genesis 1:26, 00:32:47.03\00:32:50.37 Pastor Ross. 00:32:50.40\00:32:51.77 Jean: You know, before I read that, just you're reminding me 00:32:51.80\00:32:53.10 of something. 00:32:53.13\00:32:54.54 Today, we speak with texting and different--like you said, 00:32:54.57\00:32:56.57 different things mean different things. 00:32:56.60\00:32:58.01 LOL is supposed to be laugh out loud, but I guess a teenage girl 00:32:58.04\00:33:02.21 was texting her mother and telling her about something sad 00:33:02.24\00:33:05.75 that had occurred. 00:33:05.78\00:33:07.08 And the mother responded with LOL. 00:33:07.12\00:33:08.98 And the daughter said, "Mom, that's not the 00:33:09.02\00:33:10.42 appropriate response." 00:33:10.45\00:33:12.12 Well, the mother thought LOL was love--lots of love, thank you. 00:33:12.15\00:33:18.43 Yeah, lots of love. 00:33:18.46\00:33:19.86 And the daughter's saying laugh out loud. 00:33:19.89\00:33:21.43 So, if you don't understand the context, you can get yourself in 00:33:21.46\00:33:23.77 trouble, you can be misunderstood. 00:33:23.80\00:33:26.40 And of course, knowing the right meaning of the words 00:33:26.43\00:33:28.90 and the context in the Bible also makes a difference. 00:33:28.94\00:33:31.37 Doug: Oh yeah, big difference. 00:33:31.41\00:33:32.77 Jean: Now, in Genesis chapter 1, verse 27-- 00:33:32.81\00:33:35.41 Doug: Twenty-six and twenty-seven, yeah. 00:33:35.44\00:33:37.71 Jean: Twenty-six? 00:33:37.75\00:33:39.05 Talks about God created man in his own image. 00:33:39.08\00:33:40.88 "In the image of God created him, male and female 00:33:40.92\00:33:42.95 He created them." 00:33:42.98\00:33:44.65 Now, the word there for man is Adam. 00:33:44.69\00:33:47.06 And of course, that's the name of the first man 00:33:47.09\00:33:49.29 that was created. 00:33:49.32\00:33:50.76 But we find Adam also meaning man or mankind, as well as the 00:33:50.79\00:33:55.36 individual Adam, which is kind of interesting. 00:33:55.40\00:33:58.13 Then you also brought up about Adam being connected 00:33:58.17\00:34:00.80 to the ground or the earth. 00:34:00.84\00:34:02.64 Doug: Yeah, it's a similar word for in Hebrew Edom, where, 00:34:02.67\00:34:06.07 you know, the Edomites, it was this red porridge 00:34:06.11\00:34:10.71 that was given. 00:34:10.75\00:34:12.05 And Edom and Adam--and some people say, 00:34:12.08\00:34:13.85 "What race was Adam?" 00:34:13.88\00:34:16.15 And I heard one scholar say, well, he was Indian. 00:34:16.18\00:34:20.49 I said, "Well, how do you say that?" 00:34:20.52\00:34:21.96 He said, "Well, red, yellow, black, and white." 00:34:21.99\00:34:23.76 You know, they used to say the American Indians were red. 00:34:23.79\00:34:25.46 Well, they weren't really red, they used to put some clay on 00:34:25.49\00:34:27.66 them that made them look that way. 00:34:27.66\00:34:29.66 But the word really is red or ruddy. 00:34:29.70\00:34:33.20 And it says that about David, it says he was ruddy. 00:34:33.23\00:34:35.80 And that word there meant that he kind of had a rosy 00:34:35.84\00:34:39.84 or glowing complexion. 00:34:39.87\00:34:41.31 So, who knows? 00:34:41.34\00:34:43.31 Adam might have been kind of a magenta or I don't know. 00:34:43.35\00:34:48.85 Jean: But you have Adam meaning mankind, 00:34:48.88\00:34:50.85 also the name of an individual. 00:34:50.89\00:34:52.22 Now, that's kind of significant. 00:34:52.25\00:34:53.66 When we go to the New Testament, you read in Romans chapter 5, 00:34:53.69\00:34:57.06 verse 5, "But the free gift is not like the offense, for if by 00:34:57.09\00:35:00.20 one man's offense," that would be Adam, "many die, so much more 00:35:00.23\00:35:04.37 the grace of God and the gift by one man, Jesus Christ." 00:35:04.40\00:35:08.40 And Jesus is called the second Adam. 00:35:08.44\00:35:10.71 So, in the first Adam comes death because of sin. 00:35:10.74\00:35:14.28 In the second Adam, we have life in Jesus. 00:35:14.31\00:35:17.58 Doug: Right. 00:35:17.61\00:35:18.98 And going back and talking more about the context of how you 00:35:19.01\00:35:21.18 read those things, if you look for instance in--when it talks 00:35:21.22\00:35:25.09 in Genesis about God created man in his own image, in the image 00:35:25.12\00:35:29.82 of God created him, male and female created He them." 00:35:29.86\00:35:33.03 So, you're looking at God as making them, plural. 00:35:33.06\00:35:37.57 So the word "Adam" there means humanity, mankind. 00:35:37.60\00:35:42.27 But then it says, "This is the genealogy of Adam in the day 00:35:42.30\00:35:46.61 that God created man. 00:35:46.64\00:35:48.41 He made him in the likeness of God. 00:35:48.44\00:35:50.65 He created them male and female," so that's still talking 00:35:50.68\00:35:54.22 about Adam means humanity. 00:35:54.25\00:35:56.25 This is Genesis 5:1. 00:35:56.28\00:35:57.82 Then it says, "And Adam lived 130 years, 00:35:57.85\00:36:01.02 and he begat his first son." 00:36:01.06\00:36:05.39 Adam there, does it mean humanity? 00:36:05.43\00:36:07.60 Or well, it could be Adam and Eve because they're both the 00:36:07.60\00:36:09.70 same age, aren't they? 00:36:09.73\00:36:11.23 But then later it says that he lived 930 years and he died. 00:36:11.27\00:36:15.40 Now, it's probably talking about the individual Adam. 00:36:15.44\00:36:19.31 So, that's why it's so important to read the context. 00:36:19.34\00:36:23.01 Going back to the repetition that you emphasize things, 00:36:23.04\00:36:26.01 you'll notice that when--the verse you just read, it says God 00:36:26.05\00:36:30.79 created, created, created. 00:36:30.82\00:36:33.99 And this is back in Genesis chapter 1. 00:36:34.02\00:36:36.83 Says, "Let Us make man in our image. 00:36:36.86\00:36:40.50 And so, God created him. 00:36:40.53\00:36:42.26 In the image of God He created him, male and female 00:36:42.30\00:36:44.40 He created them." 00:36:44.43\00:36:46.13 If we ever have any doubts about the origin of humanity, 00:36:46.17\00:36:48.77 the Jew is saying God created, God created, 00:36:48.80\00:36:52.94 God created in His own image. 00:36:52.97\00:36:55.28 So, it's really an insult to Bible truth to say that, you 00:36:55.31\00:37:00.32 know, man evolved from some primordial soup because then 00:37:00.35\00:37:06.19 you're calling God, you know, a rock or primordial soup. 00:37:06.22\00:37:09.99 God in a fiat way created man, and it's very important. 00:37:10.03\00:37:14.83 Jean: Now, talking about repetition, in the original 00:37:14.83\00:37:17.13 language, they didn't have capitalized or exclamation mark. 00:37:17.17\00:37:20.87 But if they wanted to emphasize something, as you said, 00:37:20.90\00:37:23.61 Pastor Doug, they would repeat it. 00:37:23.64\00:37:25.44 Probably one of the most beautiful verses that you find 00:37:25.47\00:37:27.84 in the Old Testament is Isaiah chapter 6, verse 3. 00:37:27.88\00:37:31.21 It's talking about these angels who are in the very presence 00:37:31.25\00:37:33.95 of God. 00:37:33.98\00:37:35.58 And they have six wings. 00:37:35.62\00:37:37.22 With two wings they cover their feet, with two wings they cover 00:37:37.25\00:37:39.39 their faces, with two wings they fly. 00:37:39.42\00:37:41.22 And their constant cry is, "Holy, holy, holy, Lord of 00:37:41.26\00:37:45.46 hosts, the earth is filled with your glory." 00:37:45.49\00:37:47.66 Here are the angels saying, "Holy, holy, holy," in the very 00:37:47.66\00:37:50.80 presence of God. 00:37:50.83\00:37:52.20 Some have seen in that holy for the Father, holy for the Son, 00:37:52.23\00:37:55.27 holy for the Holy Spirit, sort of a triune holiness that we 00:37:55.30\00:38:00.04 find described in the Bible. 00:38:00.08\00:38:01.48 So, it's emphasis. 00:38:01.51\00:38:02.88 And of course, often you read Jesus saying, "Verily, verily," 00:38:02.91\00:38:06.08 if you're looking at the King James version. 00:38:06.11\00:38:08.18 Or, "Verily, verily I say unto you." 00:38:08.22\00:38:10.05 Again, it's providing emphasis by repeating. 00:38:10.09\00:38:13.29 Doug: If a child is walking down a path and the parent says, 00:38:13.32\00:38:18.53 "Be careful. Child, be careful." 00:38:18.56\00:38:21.80 But if the parent says, "Be careful, be careful," they're 00:38:21.83\00:38:26.27 going, "Oh, that repetition." 00:38:26.30\00:38:28.40 If the parent says, "Be careful, be careful, be careful," 00:38:28.44\00:38:33.01 kid's going, "Oh." 00:38:33.04\00:38:34.54 I mean, so we even understand that repetition and emphasis can 00:38:34.58\00:38:39.28 be just, you know, increasing the intensity. 00:38:39.31\00:38:42.58 So, when the angels say God is holy, but when they say He is 00:38:42.62\00:38:45.69 holy, holy, and then they say He is holy, holy, holy, the three 00:38:45.72\00:38:51.83 really was like an eternal emphasis. 00:38:51.86\00:38:55.10 That it's compete and full as it can be, the holiness of God. 00:38:55.13\00:39:00.90 Jean: Pastor Doug, we've got a question that's come 00:39:00.94\00:39:02.27 in from Nancy. 00:39:02.30\00:39:03.77 And you're talking about the importance of reading something 00:39:03.81\00:39:05.24 in its context, she's asking, "What about Mark 7, where Jesus 00:39:05.27\00:39:09.81 purged all meat? 00:39:09.84\00:39:11.85 What does this mean?" 00:39:11.88\00:39:13.45 I guess she has a friend that's saying, well, we can eat 00:39:13.48\00:39:14.98 anything now because of Mark chapter 7, where Jesus purged 00:39:15.02\00:39:18.49 all meat, where He says don't call anything unclean, or it's 00:39:18.52\00:39:21.89 not that which goes into the mouth that defiles the man. 00:39:21.92\00:39:25.53 Doug: Yeah, this is a verse that has been misunderstood, and 00:39:25.56\00:39:28.20 it's actually unfortunate that the--they're probably looking at 00:39:28.23\00:39:31.60 the New International Version. 00:39:31.63\00:39:33.97 The translators there--and one of the things we've learned as 00:39:34.00\00:39:36.67 we've been studying how to interpret the Scriptures, Bible 00:39:36.71\00:39:39.87 readers come to the Scripture with certain presuppositions, 00:39:39.91\00:39:43.55 with certain bias. 00:39:43.58\00:39:46.68 And some people have a bias, an assumption when they come to 00:39:46.72\00:39:49.28 reading the New Testament. 00:39:49.32\00:39:51.59 And they assume that, yeah, Jesus declared all foods clean. 00:39:51.62\00:39:54.96 This was what you call a parenthetical statement, where 00:39:54.99\00:39:58.43 it actually is saying when Jesus said, "It's not what goes in 00:39:58.46\00:40:02.46 your mouth that defiles you, but what comes out." 00:40:02.50\00:40:06.80 Because what goes in your mouth is eliminated in the ditch, 00:40:06.84\00:40:11.81 purging all meats. 00:40:11.84\00:40:13.64 There's a certain purging influence 00:40:13.68\00:40:16.34 of the digestive system. 00:40:16.38\00:40:17.88 Jesus is talking about if you eat food without ceremonially 00:40:17.91\00:40:22.35 washing your hands, that is not what defiles a person. 00:40:22.38\00:40:26.79 He said it's not what goes in your mouth, but what comes out 00:40:26.82\00:40:28.72 of your mouth. 00:40:28.76\00:40:30.29 And the words that you speak, reflecting what's in your heart, 00:40:30.33\00:40:33.86 that's what's defiling. 00:40:33.90\00:40:35.33 If a child eats without washing their hands, most of us have 00:40:35.36\00:40:38.60 somehow survived childhood, where that often happened. 00:40:38.63\00:40:42.30 He said that's not what defiles a heart. 00:40:42.34\00:40:44.64 So, no particular food is ever mentioned. 00:40:44.67\00:40:48.28 The NIV translators took a great liberty here, they took a 00:40:48.31\00:40:51.35 parenthetical statement, where it said, 00:40:51.38\00:40:53.15 "Thus purging all foods." 00:40:53.18\00:40:55.45 They then translate that in saying this, 00:40:55.48\00:40:58.09 Jesus declared all foods clean. 00:40:58.12\00:41:00.09 I have had friends from other denominations, they will freely 00:41:00.12\00:41:02.92 admit that is not in the Greek. 00:41:02.96\00:41:05.79 So, it's not even in the original text. 00:41:05.83\00:41:07.40 It is a very unfortunate liberty that the translators took there. 00:41:07.46\00:41:12.67 That is not found in the original text. 00:41:12.70\00:41:15.10 You don't find it in the King James, New King James, 00:41:15.14\00:41:17.77 New American Standard. 00:41:17.81\00:41:19.34 But it's confused a lot of people. 00:41:19.37\00:41:20.84 And what's the verse again? 00:41:20.88\00:41:22.48 female: It's in verse 20. 00:41:22.51\00:41:24.18 Doug: It's verse 20, yeah, 19 and 20 is where you're going to 00:41:24.21\00:41:25.91 find that in Mark chapter 7. 00:41:25.95\00:41:28.38 Jean: All right, thank you, Pastor Doug. 00:41:28.42\00:41:29.75 We have another question that somebody has sent in. 00:41:29.78\00:41:31.89 And again, we thank you for all of the questions that's come in. 00:41:31.92\00:41:34.22 This person is asking, is tithe and offering only applied 00:41:34.26\00:41:38.23 to money? 00:41:38.26\00:41:39.89 Do we pay tithes and offerings only for money? 00:41:39.93\00:41:42.30 Doug: Another good place where we can apply 00:41:42.33\00:41:43.83 the Bible hermeneutics. 00:41:43.87\00:41:45.80 When Jesus--or when Malachi says, God in his Word, in 00:41:45.83\00:41:51.04 chapter 3 of Malachi, he says, "Bring all the tithe into the 00:41:51.07\00:41:55.34 storehouse, that there may be food in my house." 00:41:55.38\00:41:59.21 But when they went to the feast, if they didn't want to carry 00:41:59.25\00:42:01.72 wagonloads of grain or sheep, it says you can convert that to 00:42:01.75\00:42:06.19 money and carry the money. 00:42:06.22\00:42:07.86 It was much easier and smaller, and pay your tithe when you come 00:42:07.89\00:42:10.79 to the feast using money. 00:42:10.83\00:42:12.69 So, it could be done using agricultural tithe, if they 00:42:12.73\00:42:16.23 would literally bring to the sanctuary or to the synagogue 00:42:16.26\00:42:21.27 where they happened to meet in their tribal area to help cover 00:42:21.30\00:42:23.91 the costs for the Levites. 00:42:23.94\00:42:25.67 Or they could go to the national feast, they would convert it 00:42:25.71\00:42:28.61 to money. 00:42:28.64\00:42:30.18 It could be either one. 00:42:30.21\00:42:31.88 Jean: Somebody asked--else is asking Pastor Doug about why is 00:42:31.91\00:42:34.32 there so many genealogies that we find in the Old Testament? 00:42:34.35\00:42:37.49 And they're speaking specifically here about 00:42:37.52\00:42:39.65 Chronicles, where it says so and so begat so and so. 00:42:39.69\00:42:41.56 Why is that so important? 00:42:41.59\00:42:42.99 Doug: I used to wonder that. 00:42:43.02\00:42:44.49 And I was reading through the Bible and I would just struggle 00:42:44.53\00:42:46.03 through saying these names. 00:42:46.06\00:42:47.60 And it was always embarrassing for me when I got into ministry 00:42:47.60\00:42:51.00 and I tried to read the names. 00:42:51.03\00:42:53.30 And I'll just give you a little tip while we're at that point. 00:42:53.34\00:42:57.07 I spent years listening to the Bible on tape, driving, going to 00:42:57.11\00:43:00.68 sleep at night, every night listening to Alexander Scourby, 00:43:00.71\00:43:04.98 who read the Bible with just perfect diction. 00:43:05.01\00:43:07.98 So, I don't know how he did it, but his pronunciation. 00:43:08.02\00:43:10.65 And there's a few other programs where they--the Bible readers 00:43:10.69\00:43:13.52 read with just extraordinary pronunciations, very accurate. 00:43:13.56\00:43:17.26 Hearing him say those names made it much easier for me to start 00:43:17.29\00:43:20.83 repeating those names in years that followed. 00:43:20.86\00:43:24.63 But I used to think, why all the chronologies? 00:43:24.67\00:43:27.47 Then as you start going through the different characters in the 00:43:27.50\00:43:30.81 Bible like we just talked about Job, reading the chronology of 00:43:30.84\00:43:34.24 Esau, I said, "Aha, some of these friends of Job appear 00:43:34.28\00:43:38.55 in this chronology." 00:43:38.58\00:43:39.88 And it helped you understand where the story took place, who 00:43:39.91\00:43:42.52 he's talking to, who their ancestors were. 00:43:42.55\00:43:45.09 And it tells about Jesus being the Messiah. 00:43:45.12\00:43:47.92 You look at the chronology in Luke that goes all the way from 00:43:47.96\00:43:51.63 Jesus back to Adam, it's one of the most extraordinary 00:43:51.66\00:43:54.20 in the Bible that Jesus is the Son of God. 00:43:54.23\00:43:57.47 And so, it tells that Jesus would be the Son of David. 00:43:57.50\00:44:00.97 You've got the chronology of Jesse and the tribe of Judah 00:44:01.00\00:44:04.07 because it says the Messiah would come through that. 00:44:04.11\00:44:06.57 So, a lot of it is so we can trace the chronology of the 00:44:06.61\00:44:09.91 Messiah when He came. 00:44:09.94\00:44:11.28 Jean: Absolutely. 00:44:11.31\00:44:12.68 Thursday's lesson talks about books and their messages. 00:44:12.71\00:44:15.58 And of course, you have 66 books in the Bible. 00:44:15.62\00:44:18.95 Divided up into different categories, you have prophetic 00:44:18.99\00:44:21.59 messages through some of the prophetic books 00:44:21.62\00:44:23.73 like Isaiah, Jeremiah. 00:44:23.76\00:44:26.43 There are some books that are described as being a 00:44:26.46\00:44:28.96 compilation, where you've got, for example, Psalms, 00:44:29.00\00:44:32.30 which is compilation of songs. 00:44:32.33\00:44:34.74 Then you got Ecclesiastes, a compilation 00:44:34.77\00:44:37.17 of different sayings. 00:44:37.21\00:44:39.34 You've got historical books like 1 and 2 Kings and Chronicles. 00:44:39.37\00:44:42.94 And then you've got letter books. 00:44:42.98\00:44:44.85 Many of the New Testament books are letters. 00:44:44.88\00:44:47.22 Paul wrote a lot of letters. 00:44:47.25\00:44:48.78 The book of Revelation is really a letter to the seven churches. 00:44:48.82\00:44:51.95 So, different categories of books, and that's helpful to 00:44:51.99\00:44:54.42 bear in mind when you're studying a particular book 00:44:54.46\00:44:56.49 in the Bible. 00:44:56.52\00:44:57.96 Doug: Yeah. 00:44:57.99\00:44:59.53 Now, Revelation is a letter that was deliberately given to be 00:44:59.56\00:45:01.20 read in many churches, so it's a little more comprehensive. 00:45:01.23\00:45:04.37 It's really for the church even today 00:45:04.40\00:45:06.43 'cause it's for many churches. 00:45:06.47\00:45:08.40 Whereas when Paul writes a letter to the 1 Corinthians and 00:45:08.44\00:45:12.94 he's giving special counsel for a particular problem, or in 2 00:45:12.97\00:45:17.31 Corinthians, he's talking about a problem in 1 Corinthians, 00:45:17.35\00:45:19.98 you then have to say, "What is the culture? 00:45:20.02\00:45:22.82 What's the historical context? 00:45:22.85\00:45:24.45 What's going on in that city? 00:45:24.49\00:45:26.59 What was the problem he's addressing?" 00:45:26.62\00:45:28.36 Then reading and understanding those teachings, it's important 00:45:28.39\00:45:31.43 to get the context of the town, the history, the culture. 00:45:31.46\00:45:37.23 Like you and I get questions all the time about 1 Corinthians 11, 00:45:37.27\00:45:40.74 where it talks about a woman not praying 00:45:40.77\00:45:43.20 unless her head is covered. 00:45:43.24\00:45:45.04 And people say, "Well, is that something we're to apply today, 00:45:45.07\00:45:47.91 that no Christian woman should pray publicly 00:45:47.94\00:45:50.55 unless her head is covered?" 00:45:50.58\00:45:52.08 Well, reading the context of what was happening in Corinth 00:45:52.11\00:45:54.82 at that time, we realize that was really more of a tradition. 00:45:54.85\00:45:59.09 And he's saying, you know, we need to be respectful of that 00:45:59.12\00:46:01.19 tradition in that context. 00:46:01.22\00:46:03.26 And even later in the own--in that same book, 00:46:03.29\00:46:05.93 I forget where in the chapter, what verse it is, he says, 00:46:05.96\00:46:09.53 "But we have no such tradition." 00:46:09.56\00:46:12.50 He uses the word "tradition." 00:46:12.53\00:46:14.30 Jean: Contentious, but we don't have such tradition. 00:46:14.34\00:46:16.57 So, dealing with the specific situation it sounds like that 00:46:16.60\00:46:19.87 was taking place at the church. 00:46:19.91\00:46:21.64 And maybe that's why we don't want to build a doctrine on just 00:46:21.68\00:46:23.38 simply one verse. 00:46:23.41\00:46:25.01 In the mouth of two or three witnesses. 00:46:25.05\00:46:27.22 And unfortunately, there are some people, pastor, that'll 00:46:27.25\00:46:29.08 take one verse and ignore the rest of the Bible as to what 00:46:29.12\00:46:32.59 it's saying, and they'll build a whole theology out of one verse. 00:46:32.62\00:46:35.79 And often, it's taken out of its context. 00:46:35.82\00:46:38.96 So, not only do you recognize that the Bible has different 00:46:38.99\00:46:41.96 books written for different audiences at different times, we 00:46:42.00\00:46:45.23 want to bear that in mind, but of course there are different 00:46:45.27\00:46:47.47 writers, about 36 at least that we know of, 36 different authors 00:46:47.50\00:46:52.31 that wrote different parts of the Bible. 00:46:52.34\00:46:54.78 This is interesting, Pastor Doug. 00:46:54.81\00:46:57.11 Some of the authorship is not given. 00:46:57.15\00:47:00.25 Sometimes, you read Paul, it states that Paul wrote the book. 00:47:00.28\00:47:02.95 Or in Revelation, John says he wrote the book. 00:47:02.98\00:47:05.15 But there are books in the Bible where we're not quite sure who 00:47:05.19\00:47:07.82 the person is that actually wrote the book. 00:47:07.86\00:47:10.03 And here are some examples. 00:47:10.06\00:47:12.23 For example, the book of Ruth, we're not quite sure 00:47:12.26\00:47:14.23 who wrote Ruth. 00:47:14.30\00:47:16.03 The book of Esther, you had an idea and I thought that was kind 00:47:16.06\00:47:18.33 of interesting. 00:47:18.37\00:47:19.60 Even though it doesn't say who wrote the book of Esther, but 00:47:19.63\00:47:21.57 you thought maybe Mordecai. 00:47:21.60\00:47:23.17 Doug: Mordecai would have been intimately acquainted with 00:47:23.20\00:47:24.97 the language and what happened in the palace on that occasion. 00:47:25.01\00:47:28.21 Jean: Right. 00:47:28.24\00:47:29.78 Doug: You wonder who in that story saw everything from all 00:47:29.81\00:47:31.25 perspectives, and he was probably--so, 00:47:31.28\00:47:33.15 we don't know, but. 00:47:33.18\00:47:34.72 Jean: The book of Job, even though it doesn't say 00:47:34.75\00:47:37.15 specifically in the book, I think there's enough tradition 00:47:37.19\00:47:40.92 and suggestions that that was probably written by Moses. 00:47:40.96\00:47:44.46 Doug: Stylistically, you look at the way Moses wrote 00:47:44.49\00:47:46.59 and it's very similar. 00:47:46.63\00:47:48.03 And he would've been acquainted with that story 00:47:48.06\00:47:49.40 being related to Jethro. 00:47:49.43\00:47:51.73 Jean: Mm-hmm, there's a connection there. 00:47:51.77\00:47:53.44 So, it's helpful to take into consideration. 00:47:53.47\00:47:55.04 And another amazing thing about that is you've got authors with 00:47:55.07\00:47:57.44 totally different backgrounds. 00:47:57.47\00:47:59.51 And God used fishermen, and scholars, and all kinds 00:47:59.54\00:48:03.18 of different people in giving us the Bible. 00:48:03.21\00:48:05.95 Doug: I'm so thankful. 00:48:05.98\00:48:07.48 When you look at the four gospels of Jesus that God used 00:48:07.52\00:48:10.92 Matthew, a tax collector. 00:48:10.95\00:48:12.62 He used Mark, who's really Peter, a fisherman. 00:48:12.65\00:48:15.26 Mark wrote it for Peter. 00:48:15.29\00:48:16.69 You've got Luke, who's a Gentile, who's writing to an 00:48:16.73\00:48:18.83 educated leader, Theophilus. 00:48:18.86\00:48:22.00 And then John, who's that beloved disciple, evidently 00:48:22.03\00:48:24.70 related somehow to the priesthood 'cause he knew the 00:48:24.73\00:48:26.94 family in the priesthood. 00:48:26.97\00:48:28.60 And so, those perspectives really help us 00:48:28.64\00:48:30.54 know Jesus better. 00:48:30.57\00:48:32.07 Why don't you tell us about the free offer again 00:48:32.11\00:48:33.81 before we run off the air? 00:48:33.84\00:48:35.38 Jean: Yes, we want to remind you if you just joined us, our 00:48:35.41\00:48:37.48 free offer today is actually a study through the Scriptures. 00:49:00.30\00:49:03.64 announcer: Amazing facts, changed lives. 00:49:07.91\00:49:13.78 male: We were going to church every other week. 00:49:16.85\00:49:19.55 About 19 years old, things really start 00:49:19.59\00:49:21.19 to make sense for me. 00:49:21.22\00:49:22.56 I started to go to church for myself. 00:49:22.59\00:49:24.59 And the pastor wanted to study with me. 00:49:24.63\00:49:28.00 We came to the study about baptism. 00:49:28.03\00:49:30.97 And I kind of just shrugged, put my head down, 00:49:31.00\00:49:33.27 and I said, "I'm not ready." 00:49:33.30\00:49:34.84 He looked me in the eye and said, "Jason, you'll never make 00:49:34.87\00:49:39.47 yourself ready. 00:49:39.51\00:49:41.71 You know, this is something you have to do." 00:49:41.74\00:49:44.61 I put a lot of things behind me, the drinking and smoking, all 00:49:44.65\00:49:46.92 that stuff stopped. 00:49:46.95\00:49:48.32 All throughout the time when I'd been learning about God, it was 00:49:48.35\00:49:51.32 just me and God. 00:49:51.35\00:49:53.52 Comes around up to about August and I meet this girl. 00:49:53.56\00:49:58.39 About two years into the relationship, we're talking 00:49:58.43\00:50:00.83 about marriage and everything. 00:50:00.86\00:50:02.20 We didn't pray, we didn't study together, we were arguing a lot. 00:50:02.23\00:50:08.30 But we were engaged. 00:50:08.34\00:50:10.94 I started drinking again, and that was a slow downward spiral 00:50:10.97\00:50:14.68 into different things, and my devotional life started 00:50:14.71\00:50:16.48 really weaseling away. 00:50:16.51\00:50:18.81 We broke up in 2008. 00:50:18.85\00:50:20.58 It was heavy for me 'cause, again, being with somebody for 00:50:20.62\00:50:23.55 that long, it's almost like a divorce. 00:50:23.59\00:50:28.56 I started to fall back away even more. 00:50:28.59\00:50:31.76 I remember looking in the mirror, just looking at myself 00:50:31.79\00:50:33.83 and saying, "What are you doing? 00:50:33.86\00:50:36.13 How can you do this to God? 00:50:36.16\00:50:37.97 He's brought you so far." 00:50:38.00\00:50:41.34 And you know, God really heard my cry. 00:50:41.37\00:50:46.81 There was a testimony telling at my church, and there's a call, 00:50:46.84\00:50:51.15 and kids started getting up, a bunch of high school kids 00:50:51.18\00:50:53.08 started getting up for calls of baptism. 00:50:53.11\00:50:55.72 I'm back doing the PA system at this time, and I feel just like 00:50:55.75\00:50:58.62 this urge, just my heart just started ripping out of my chest. 00:50:58.65\00:51:02.66 And I just had this feeling just to go up. 00:51:02.69\00:51:05.36 I get to the front and I meet the pastor with open arms. 00:51:05.39\00:51:11.53 I realized that there's so much more to life than just living 00:51:11.57\00:51:13.94 life for myself. 00:51:13.97\00:51:16.04 And you know, falling away, it's not a necessity, but God can 00:51:16.07\00:51:21.28 work through anything in the bad to make it the good, 00:51:21.31\00:51:25.18 that's a promise He makes. 00:51:25.21\00:51:27.08 announcer: Together, we have spread the gospel much farther 00:51:37.26\00:51:40.26 than ever before. 00:51:40.30\00:51:42.40 Thank you for your support. 00:51:42.43\00:51:44.57 announcer: Amazing facts, changed lives. 00:51:52.57\00:52:00.58 female: It wasn't my choice to be a Catholic. 00:52:00.62\00:52:03.12 It was my parents' choice. 00:52:03.15\00:52:04.89 My mom, she's very, very religious. 00:52:04.92\00:52:09.49 My father, he was made the presidential trouble shooter 00:52:09.52\00:52:14.40 during the martial law. 00:52:14.46\00:52:17.67 I guess having seven kids would not be able to make my mother to 00:52:17.70\00:52:22.50 be--you know, be there for each and every one of us. 00:52:22.54\00:52:25.87 But what is really very hard for me was I was always told to be 00:52:25.91\00:52:30.08 the ugliest, to be the darkest. 00:52:30.11\00:52:32.78 You know, here in the Philippines, 00:52:32.81\00:52:34.65 you're beautiful if you're white. 00:52:34.68\00:52:37.09 But if you're brown or a little bit darker, 00:52:37.12\00:52:39.95 which I was, you're ugly. 00:52:39.99\00:52:43.93 All of us had about seven maids, one for each child. 00:52:43.96\00:52:48.63 The maids would say, "My baby," or the one she's taking care of, 00:52:48.66\00:52:53.07 "is a lot better than yours," referring to me. 00:52:53.10\00:52:57.37 I believed because I was ugly, I believed I was stupid. 00:52:57.41\00:53:00.81 I believed I was good for nothing, so I attracted all the 00:53:00.84\00:53:04.88 bad things in my life. 00:53:04.91\00:53:07.52 I had to believe that God is fair, so I said maybe that's 00:53:07.55\00:53:12.69 because I was bad in my previous lives. 00:53:12.72\00:53:17.46 So, I believe in, of course, reincarnation. 00:53:17.49\00:53:21.33 And when I was young, my mom told me 00:53:21.36\00:53:24.63 that I could really see ghosts. 00:53:24.67\00:53:27.10 I went into a lot of seance. 00:53:27.14\00:53:31.77 And there was even a time when we did a ouija board. 00:53:31.81\00:53:35.31 And then in front of me really--it really happened for 00:53:35.34\00:53:38.65 the four of us, the glass, which is a wine glass, 00:53:38.68\00:53:43.05 it just--you know, it just went up. 00:53:43.08\00:53:48.29 So, because this is my life, I do believe 00:53:48.32\00:53:50.73 that I was attracted to the wrong man. 00:53:50.76\00:53:53.90 There's anything that really happened very good was to have 00:53:53.93\00:53:57.20 my two adorable children, but I was really abused in all areas, 00:53:57.23\00:54:04.14 physically, emotionally, of course spiritually. 00:54:04.17\00:54:09.01 And you will think, "Where is God?" 00:54:09.04\00:54:17.45 I began to search, and unfortunately my church doesn't 00:54:17.49\00:54:20.69 have a Bible study. 00:54:20.72\00:54:22.69 So, I was able to go to a Baptist Bible study, and there I 00:54:22.72\00:54:27.13 had a classmate, her name is Lu. 00:54:27.13\00:54:30.90 She gave me the DVDs, and that is where I learned about Pastor 00:54:30.93\00:54:36.07 Doug and "Amazing Facts." 00:54:36.10\00:54:40.68 That Baptist church saw my eagerness, so when I started 00:54:40.71\00:54:45.78 asking for the Sabbath worship on a Saturday, they took me out. 00:54:45.81\00:54:54.06 They even got a meeting and they said that I was a stumbling 00:54:54.09\00:54:57.63 block, me and Lu, and that is how we left. 00:54:57.66\00:55:02.70 Our friends are all from the Baptist and we love them dearly, 00:55:02.73\00:55:07.17 but the truth cannot be compromised. 00:55:07.20\00:55:13.38 So, that is when we started having a Bible study, 00:55:13.41\00:55:18.21 every four o'clock at Club Filipino, 00:55:18.25\00:55:21.08 and I invite all my friends. 00:55:21.12\00:55:25.32 It pains me to think that I was really lost. 00:55:25.35\00:55:29.36 Why is it that I'd find teaching through a foreigner, 00:55:29.39\00:55:34.86 from Pastor Doug? 00:55:34.93\00:55:37.00 What if nobody gave me the message? 00:55:37.03\00:55:40.17 Because my growth happened because of the DVDs that I watch 00:55:40.20\00:55:48.31 every night, every morning. 00:55:48.34\00:55:52.05 And even my friends, who happened to have master 00:55:52.08\00:55:56.05 degree, they say, "Why are you so much better? 00:55:56.08\00:55:59.79 Maybe your teachers are good." 00:55:59.82\00:56:02.52 Yes, my teachers are from the "Amazing Facts." 00:56:02.56\00:56:06.26 I owe my salvation really to all the teachings that I've learned 00:56:06.29\00:56:11.07 from your DVDs and from your books. 00:56:11.10\00:56:14.70 ¤¤¤ 00:56:14.74\00:56:24.71 ¤¤¤ 00:56:24.75\00:56:31.22 Doug: Friends, we're out here in the Pacific Ocean, not too 00:56:31.25\00:56:33.25 far from the island of Fiji. 00:56:33.29\00:56:35.32 And we're getting ready to look at some wonders in the deep. 00:56:35.36\00:56:39.63 The Bible says God made the heaven, the earth, and the sea. 00:56:39.66\00:56:42.63 And there are things under the sea that are beautiful that many 00:56:42.66\00:56:44.90 people have never seen. 00:56:44.93\00:56:46.53 Some folks might just skim along, snorkel on the surface. 00:56:46.57\00:56:49.74 But if you want to see the real majesty of the ocean, 00:56:49.77\00:56:52.04 you've got to go deeper. 00:56:52.07\00:56:53.91 ¤¤¤ 00:56:53.94\00:57:03.92 ¤¤¤ 00:57:03.95\00:57:07.79 Doug: Because people don't have gills like fish, we have to 00:57:07.82\00:57:10.49 do something extraordinary to be able to breathe 00:57:10.53\00:57:12.99 below the surface. 00:57:13.03\00:57:14.46 And because you have to breathe all the time, we need this 00:57:14.46\00:57:16.80 special equipment. 00:57:16.83\00:57:20.84 In the same way, the Bible says a Christian needs to pray 00:57:20.87\00:57:23.27 without ceasing. 00:57:23.30\00:57:24.87 We need to always be breathing the atmosphere of heaven if 00:57:24.91\00:57:28.04 we're going to live a Christian life in this world below. 00:57:28.08\00:57:30.88 ¤¤¤
