news as 00:06:10.00\00:06:13.10 we read in Daniel about the promise for those who love You, 00:06:13.13\00:06:16.64 that You're going to come again, and You're going to resurrect 00:06:16.67\00:06:19.51 those who trust in You. 00:06:19.54\00:06:21.61 So bless our study time today, for we ask this in Jesus' 00:06:21.64\00:06:24.61 name, amen. 00:06:24.65\00:06:27.05 Our lesson today is going to be brought to us by Pastor Doug. 00:06:27.08\00:06:30.39 Doug Batchelor: Morning, welcome, we're glad you're here 00:06:33.02\00:06:34.96 this Sabbath. 00:06:34.99\00:06:36.42 I want to welcome also those who are studying with us. 00:06:36.46\00:06:39.06 We have a lot of people around the world who are some of our 00:06:39.09\00:06:41.93 online members. 00:06:41.96\00:06:43.37 They don't have a local church they can attend, and I want to 00:06:43.40\00:06:45.90 welcome you as well as those who are just joining us on Facebook, 00:06:45.93\00:06:48.80 or some of them watching on satellite television, and we 00:06:48.84\00:06:51.94 have a class that is all around the world, and it's always just 00:06:51.97\00:06:57.25 so thankful as we travel and meet the people that are 00:06:57.28\00:06:59.31 studying with us. 00:06:59.35\00:07:01.05 Just a couple of weeks ago, Karen and I were in Nashville 00:07:01.08\00:07:04.09 and in Chattanooga, and met a lot of our friends there, 00:07:04.12\00:07:07.96 as well. 00:07:07.99\00:07:09.49 Got out of Nashville just before the hurricanes came through, or 00:07:09.52\00:07:12.73 the tornado, I should say, came through, and need to be praying 00:07:12.76\00:07:17.00 for those folks. 00:07:17.03\00:07:18.60 We have an exciting lesson today, dealing with the subject 00:07:18.63\00:07:22.00 of Daniel, and we're talking about the last chapter in 00:07:22.04\00:07:24.97 Daniel, Daniel chapter 12. 00:07:25.01\00:07:26.84 It's lesson 13. 00:07:26.88\00:07:28.84 Keep in mind, there's 12 chapters in Daniel all through 00:07:28.88\00:07:32.15 this quarterly because we had one chapter for an introduction. 00:07:32.18\00:07:34.58 The lesson has always been one ahead of the chapter. 00:07:34.62\00:07:38.79 So we're on lesson 13, covering Daniel chapter 12, a great, 00:07:38.82\00:07:42.86 great chapter. 00:07:42.89\00:07:45.99 And there's a memory verse from Daniel 12, verse 3. 00:07:46.03\00:07:49.53 We'd like to invite you to say it with us. 00:07:49.56\00:07:51.77 Daniel, chapter 12, verse 3, and this is from the New King 00:07:51.80\00:07:54.07 James Version. 00:07:54.10\00:07:55.77 Are you ready? 00:07:55.80\00:07:58.24 "Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the 00:07:58.27\00:08:00.78 firmament, and those who turn many to righteousness like the 00:08:00.81\00:08:04.75 stars forever and ever." 00:08:04.78\00:08:08.15 That's one of my favorite verses. 00:08:08.18\00:08:10.69 You know, if you're an evangelist, you like to 00:08:10.72\00:08:13.46 encourage people to turn others to righteousness. 00:08:13.49\00:08:17.26 Now, you know what I'd like to do, there's 13 verses in this 00:08:17.29\00:08:20.13 chapter, I want to read through it. 00:08:20.16\00:08:22.76 And then we're going to back up, and we're going to study it. 00:08:22.80\00:08:24.90 This is a very important chapter. 00:08:24.93\00:08:26.87 It's sort of a culmination of the book of Daniel, and it is 00:08:26.90\00:08:31.91 somewhat of a controversial chapter because there are more 00:08:31.94\00:08:34.74 time prophecies in this chapter than any other short passage of 00:08:34.78\00:08:40.08 Scripture, and so there's been a lot of discussion about that, 00:08:40.12\00:08:44.49 and we'll get to that at the end so--but there's so much good 00:08:44.52\00:08:47.89 material ahead of time. 00:08:47.92\00:08:49.42 So we're going to read these verses. 00:08:49.46\00:08:51.16 I'll just read through it for you, and then we'll back up, and 00:08:51.19\00:08:52.93 we'll study them point by point. 00:08:52.96\00:08:54.93 Chapter 12, Daniel, verse 1: "'At that time Michael shall 00:08:54.96\00:09:01.57 stand up, the great prince who stands watch over the sons of 00:09:01.60\00:09:05.51 your people, and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never 00:09:05.54\00:09:09.18 been since there was a nation, even to that time. 00:09:09.21\00:09:12.78 And at that time your people shall be delivered, every one 00:09:12.81\00:09:16.69 who is found written in the book. 00:09:16.72\00:09:19.15 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall 00:09:19.19\00:09:22.49 awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and 00:09:22.52\00:09:26.43 everlasting contempt, and those who are wise will shine like the 00:09:26.46\00:09:30.23 brightness of the firmament, and those who turn many to 00:09:30.27\00:09:33.17 righteousness like the stars forever and ever. 00:09:33.20\00:09:35.97 But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until 00:09:36.00\00:09:39.64 the time of the end. 00:09:39.67\00:09:41.44 Many will run to and fro, and knowledge will increase.' 00:09:41.48\00:09:45.58 Then I, Daniel, looked, and there stood two others, one on 00:09:45.61\00:09:49.55 this side of the riverbank and the other on the other side of 00:09:49.58\00:09:53.12 the riverbank. 00:09:53.15\00:09:55.26 And one said to the man clothed in linen, who was above the 00:09:55.29\00:09:57.79 waters of the river, 'How long shall be the fulfillment of 00:09:57.83\00:10:00.96 these wonders?' 00:10:01.00\00:10:02.80 Then I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters 00:10:02.83\00:10:06.03 of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand 00:10:06.07\00:10:09.30 to heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever, that it shall be 00:10:09.34\00:10:13.21 for a time, times, and half a time, when the power of the holy 00:10:13.24\00:10:18.25 people has been completely shattered, all these things 00:10:18.28\00:10:21.62 shall be finished.' 00:10:21.65\00:10:23.85 Although I heard, I did not understand. 00:10:23.89\00:10:26.35 Then I said, 'My lord, what shall be the end of 00:10:26.39\00:10:28.29 these things?' 00:10:28.32\00:10:30.29 And he said, 'Go your way, Daniel, for the words are closed 00:10:30.33\00:10:33.29 up and sealed till the time of the end. 00:10:33.33\00:10:36.30 Many will be purified, made white, and refined, but the 00:10:36.33\00:10:40.17 wicked will do wickedly, and none of the wicked will 00:10:40.20\00:10:42.77 understand, but the wise will understand. 00:10:42.80\00:10:45.57 And from the time that the daily sacrifice is taken away, and the 00:10:45.61\00:10:49.61 abomination of desolation is set up, there shall be 1,290 days. 00:10:49.64\00:10:55.12 Blessed is he who waits, and comes to the 1,335 days. 00:10:55.15\00:11:01.62 But you, go your way till the end, for you shall rest, and 00:11:01.66\00:11:06.06 will arise to your inheritance at the end of the days,'" or it 00:11:06.09\00:11:09.33 says "arise in your lot," if you've got the King James 00:11:09.36\00:11:11.80 Version, "At the end of your days." 00:11:11.83\00:11:13.54 Okay, there you have it. 00:11:13.57\00:11:16.07 Now, we're going to go through these verses one by one, and 00:11:16.10\00:11:18.01 we'll get as far as we can, but at least we can say we finished 00:11:18.04\00:11:20.44 the book of Daniel, amen? 00:11:20.48\00:11:23.04 I would like to read, just read through it with you. 00:11:23.08\00:11:25.18 First of all, "at that time," at what time? 00:11:25.21\00:11:32.09 To understand what he's talking about when he says "at that 00:11:32.12\00:11:34.46 time," you've got to go back, and you go to chapter 11, and in 00:11:34.49\00:11:39.29 verse 40 of chapter 11, you'll notice it says, "And at the time 00:11:39.33\00:11:43.33 of the end the king of the South shall attack him," or push 00:11:43.37\00:11:47.44 against him, "and the king of the North shall come against him 00:11:47.47\00:11:50.21 like a whirlwind, with chariots, horsemen, and many ships, and he 00:11:50.24\00:11:53.38 will enter the countries and overwhelm and pass through. 00:11:53.41\00:11:57.28 He'll also enter the Glorious Land." 00:11:57.31\00:11:59.48 So when it says, "at that time," is talking about at the time of 00:11:59.51\00:12:01.92 the end. 00:12:01.95\00:12:04.29 Now, the phrase, "the time of the end" is mentioned five 00:12:04.32\00:12:06.89 times, I think it's called "the end of time" or "the time of 00:12:06.92\00:12:09.36 the end" in the book of Daniel. 00:12:09.39\00:12:11.46 So Daniel is a prophecy book that deals with the time of the 00:12:11.49\00:12:15.06 end, it's mentioned several times in the book, and it 00:12:15.10\00:12:18.27 takes--the prophecies in Daniel typically go from the time of 00:12:18.30\00:12:22.37 Daniel, when he has the prophecy, up until the end of 00:12:22.40\00:12:26.21 time, and God's kingdom is restored. 00:12:26.24\00:12:28.64 Keep in mind, the book of Daniel is written in the context of one 00:12:28.68\00:12:31.78 of the sons or grandsons of Hezekiah of the royal seed. 00:12:31.81\00:12:37.45 They have been displaced, the temple's been destroyed, they've 00:12:37.49\00:12:40.29 been conquered, they're carried off into another kingdom, and 00:12:40.32\00:12:43.32 the theme in the book is "When will God's kingdom 00:12:43.36\00:12:45.03 be restored?" 00:12:45.06\00:12:47.66 And it goes beyond the kingdom of Israel, after 70 years being 00:12:47.66\00:12:50.33 restored, goes on to the ultimate restoration under the 00:12:50.37\00:12:54.14 Son of God. 00:12:54.17\00:12:56.20 So he's also in verse 1 of chapter 12. 00:12:56.24\00:12:59.91 "The time of the end," speaking about that time where you've got 00:12:59.94\00:13:02.58 the battle between the king of the North and South--I know that 00:13:02.61\00:13:04.95 was covered last week, and most Adventist scholars agree, and, 00:13:04.98\00:13:10.35 actually, most of the Protestant reformers agree the King of the 00:13:10.39\00:13:13.56 North is talking about that little horn power, and it's the 00:13:13.59\00:13:17.33 confederacy of the apostate Christianity, both Protestant, 00:13:17.36\00:13:21.56 Catholic charismatic, that will join together, and then there's 00:13:21.60\00:13:25.00 this battle against the King of the South. 00:13:25.03\00:13:27.87 There's some disagreement about who the King of the South is. 00:13:27.90\00:13:30.64 I've heard everything from, you know, the Ottoman Empire, to 00:13:30.67\00:13:34.71 atheism, to Islam. 00:13:34.74\00:13:36.78 Personally, I'm more inclined to think it's Islam. 00:13:36.81\00:13:39.35 I've got good friends that believe it's atheism, but since 00:13:39.38\00:13:42.78 the fall of Communism and since things are even changing in 00:13:42.82\00:13:45.89 China now, where Christianity and religion is spreading once 00:13:45.92\00:13:50.59 again, I think it may be something else so--but we won't 00:13:50.63\00:13:53.63 delve into that. 00:13:53.66\00:13:56.53 So here we are, these final events, the time of the end, and 00:13:56.56\00:13:59.40 he said, "Michael will stand up." 00:13:59.43\00:14:03.27 All right, two things here--Michael. 00:14:03.30\00:14:05.51 Some of you heard when we talked in chapter 10 about Michael, but 00:14:05.54\00:14:09.21 some people are watching that missed a lot, and I just want 00:14:09.24\00:14:13.68 to review. 00:14:13.72\00:14:15.75 "Michael" is one of the pre-incarnation names 00:14:15.78\00:14:18.79 for Christ. 00:14:18.82\00:14:20.66 Christ is the everlasting Son of God. 00:14:20.69\00:14:22.29 He is not an angel. 00:14:22.32\00:14:23.86 People hear me say, "Michael the archangel is Jesus." 00:14:23.89\00:14:25.89 They go, "You don't think Jesus is the Son of God," or "You 00:14:25.93\00:14:28.26 don't think Jesus is eternal." 00:14:28.30\00:14:30.27 No, no, no. 00:14:30.30\00:14:31.83 It's the other way around. 00:14:31.87\00:14:33.37 The word "angel" simply means "messenger." 00:14:33.40\00:14:34.74 "Michael" means "who is as God." 00:14:34.77\00:14:36.37 "Archangel" means "highest messenger." 00:14:36.40\00:14:38.74 So who is the highest messenger that is as God? 00:14:38.77\00:14:42.74 That's Jesus. 00:14:42.78\00:14:44.75 And you look at the evidence in the Bible, and you're going to 00:14:44.78\00:14:47.02 see, well, it tells us that Michael resurrects Moses. 00:14:47.05\00:14:49.88 In Jude verse 9, who is the resurrection of life? 00:14:49.92\00:14:52.59 Christ. 00:14:52.62\00:14:54.46 You read in 1 Thessalonians 4, "The Lord Himself will descend 00:14:54.49\00:14:57.56 from heaven with a shout and the voice of the archangel." 00:14:57.59\00:15:00.26 The Lord Himself, voice of the archangel. 00:15:00.30\00:15:03.26 So who is the one descending from heaven? 00:15:03.30\00:15:05.57 Christ. 00:15:05.60\00:15:08.14 He's got the greatest messenger. 00:15:08.17\00:15:10.71 You read where it tells us that Joshua takes his shoes off his 00:15:10.74\00:15:13.17 feet as he bows before the commander of the Lord's armies, 00:15:13.21\00:15:16.41 and many think that was what they call a "Christophany," 00:15:16.44\00:15:20.62 where Jesus appears to humans, but he says he's commander of 00:15:20.65\00:15:24.59 the Lord's armies, another term for Michael, but he's taking off 00:15:24.62\00:15:27.79 his shoes because he's worshiping, and you only 00:15:27.82\00:15:29.36 worship God. 00:15:29.39\00:15:30.83 You with me? 00:15:30.86\00:15:32.33 And so when you look at the evidence for Michael that 00:15:32.36\00:15:33.83 appears through the Bible, and it says, "The great prince that 00:15:33.86\00:15:36.90 stands for the children of thy people," intercedes, stands for 00:15:36.93\00:15:39.60 the behalf. 00:15:39.63\00:15:41.24 Who is that? 00:15:41.27\00:15:42.87 That's Christ. 00:15:42.90\00:15:44.84 Now, just so you--I've heard people say, "Well, this is some 00:15:44.87\00:15:46.31 weird Seventh Day Adventist teaching." 00:15:46.34\00:15:47.84 No, friend, sorry. 00:15:47.88\00:15:49.34 It is a Protestant teaching. 00:15:49.38\00:15:51.18 Melanchthon, Luther's partner, insisted Michael is Christ. 00:15:51.21\00:15:54.85 He called, in the New Testament, and archangel. 00:15:54.88\00:15:57.85 He is none other than Christ, the Son of God, an uncreated 00:15:57.89\00:16:01.06 angel who is one, and it says in Daniel 10:13, that means who is 00:16:01.09\00:16:05.39 "chief of all the princes." 00:16:05.43\00:16:07.86 That's what that means. 00:16:07.93\00:16:09.53 John Gill, he says in his commentary, "Superior to angels, 00:16:09.56\00:16:13.77 in nature, name, and office, he came to 'help' Gabriel, not as a 00:16:13.80\00:16:17.74 creature, but as the Lord of hosts." 00:16:17.77\00:16:20.38 "Michael is commonly--" this is John Wesley. 00:16:20.41\00:16:22.78 "Michael is commonly supposed to mean Christ." 00:16:22.81\00:16:25.25 One more evidence for that, when you go to Revelation chapter 12, 00:16:25.28\00:16:27.72 Michael and his angels fought against the dragon and 00:16:27.75\00:16:31.89 his angels. 00:16:31.92\00:16:34.46 Well, who is the dragon? 00:16:34.49\00:16:37.29 Dragon is a symbolic name for the chief of evil, the devil. 00:16:37.33\00:16:39.93 If that's true, then why would we doubt that Michael is a 00:16:39.96\00:16:42.10 symbolic name for the chief of good, God the Son? 00:16:42.13\00:16:45.87 And so I think there's lots of evidence for that. 00:16:45.90\00:16:49.00 Please request the free booklet if you've got questions on that 00:16:49.04\00:16:51.51 because there's a lot more Scripture. 00:16:51.54\00:16:54.11 The free booklet is on "Who is Michael the Archangel?" 00:16:54.14\00:16:57.38 "Michael will stand up." 00:16:57.41\00:16:59.68 Now, what does "stand up" mean? 00:16:59.71\00:17:01.98 Well, a couple things. 00:17:02.02\00:17:03.99 There's a judgment that takes place in the book of Daniel. 00:17:04.02\00:17:06.99 When a judge sits down--you know, when the judge first 00:17:07.02\00:17:09.22 enters a court room, the bailiff often says, "All rise," out 00:17:09.26\00:17:12.29 of respect. 00:17:12.33\00:17:14.20 And when he's seated, then the people are seated. 00:17:14.20\00:17:16.53 You can read in Daniel that the thrones were set in place. 00:17:16.56\00:17:19.83 The court was seated. 00:17:19.87\00:17:22.07 There's a judgment that takes place. 00:17:22.10\00:17:23.67 When the judge stands up, is he listening to evidence anymore? 00:17:23.71\00:17:27.78 He issues his verdict, then he stands up. 00:17:27.81\00:17:29.54 Judgment is over. 00:17:29.58\00:17:31.65 So there's one aspect. 00:17:31.68\00:17:33.82 You can also say in the Bible that, when a king was roused to 00:17:33.85\00:17:37.72 stand, it meant he was getting ready to go into battle, and he 00:17:37.75\00:17:43.36 was going to defend his people. 00:17:43.39\00:17:45.86 Some of you had fathers that, you know, kids were goofing off 00:17:45.89\00:17:48.93 in the house, and he was sitting down, you know, enjoying dinner 00:17:48.96\00:17:51.77 and watching the program, and he'd say, "Don't make me 00:17:51.80\00:17:54.70 get up." 00:17:54.74\00:17:56.60 Anyone have a father like that? 00:17:56.64\00:17:58.87 "If I get up, if I have to go through the trouble of getting 00:17:58.91\00:18:01.64 up, there's going to be consequences." 00:18:01.68\00:18:05.78 And so when God rises, something's going to happen. 00:18:05.81\00:18:11.12 That's what's happening here. 00:18:11.15\00:18:13.25 And I'll give you a couple of verses for that you can read 00:18:13.29\00:18:15.76 where it says in Revelation, chapter 1, verse 5, "And from 00:18:15.79\00:18:23.33 Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the first 00:18:23.37\00:18:26.37 begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of 00:18:26.40\00:18:29.24 the earth." 00:18:29.27\00:18:30.81 So it says, "Michael, our prince." 00:18:30.84\00:18:32.41 "And to him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His 00:18:32.44\00:18:34.64 own blood." 00:18:34.68\00:18:36.51 Go to Isaiah 3:13, "The Lord stands up to plead. 00:18:36.54\00:18:39.51 "The Lord stands to judge His people." 00:18:39.55\00:18:43.59 And "judge" means "execute judgment." 00:18:43.62\00:18:46.25 Revelation 14:1, "Then I looked, and behold, a Lamb standing on 00:18:46.29\00:18:49.96 Mount Zion, and with Him 144,000, having their Father's 00:18:49.99\00:18:54.63 name written in their forehead." 00:18:54.66\00:18:57.43 So--and it tells us that He's a great prince that stands for the 00:18:57.47\00:19:01.84 sons of our people. 00:19:01.87\00:19:03.47 He's the intercessor. 00:19:03.51\00:19:05.91 Look in Romans 8:34, "Who is he who condemns? 00:19:05.94\00:19:09.54 It is Christ who died, and furthermore is risen, who is 00:19:09.58\00:19:13.35 even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession 00:19:13.38\00:19:17.49 for us." 00:19:17.52\00:19:18.85 So Jesus is that great prince that stands for the sons of the 00:19:18.89\00:19:22.46 people, something like a defense attorney who represents and 00:19:22.49\00:19:25.66 intercedes on our behalf. 00:19:25.69\00:19:27.66 You've probably seen paintings before where Jesus is portrayed. 00:19:27.66\00:19:30.93 Harry Anderson has a nice painting like this. 00:19:30.97\00:19:33.07 Jesus is portrayed, and all you see is the light from God. 00:19:33.10\00:19:35.37 You don't see the throne of God. 00:19:35.40\00:19:37.31 You see the light from the throne of the Father, shining 00:19:37.34\00:19:39.44 on Christ. 00:19:39.47\00:19:41.34 There's some shadows in the background, and Jesus is 00:19:41.38\00:19:43.41 spreading out His hands before the Father. 00:19:43.45\00:19:44.81 You've probably seen paintings like this. 00:19:44.85\00:19:46.31 He's interceding. 00:19:46.35\00:19:47.72 He is standing as our mediator, our Paraclete, our intercessor 00:19:47.75\00:19:51.45 with the Father. 00:19:51.49\00:19:53.99 You look in Hebrews 7:25, "Therefore He is also to save to 00:19:54.02\00:19:58.86 the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always 00:19:58.89\00:20:03.47 lives to make intercession for them." 00:20:03.50\00:20:07.14 Now, right now, because of Jesus, probation is not closed. 00:20:07.17\00:20:11.11 The door of mercy is open, and we can boldly come before the 00:20:11.14\00:20:16.41 throne of God. 00:20:16.44\00:20:17.88 There's no more veil that separates us from God. 00:20:17.91\00:20:20.15 In Christ, the veil is taken away. 00:20:20.18\00:20:22.75 We go to the Father Himself. 00:20:22.78\00:20:25.19 We pray directly to the Father through Christ. 00:20:25.22\00:20:28.32 We do not have to go through a priest. 00:20:28.36\00:20:30.59 We do not have to go through an earthly mediator. 00:20:30.63\00:20:33.83 We have a friend in heaven, he's a heavenly mediator. 00:20:33.86\00:20:36.83 This is one of the great battles of the Reformation. 00:20:36.87\00:20:39.70 You know, the church was saying, "You got to go through the 00:20:39.73\00:20:41.70 priests to get to God." 00:20:41.74\00:20:43.77 And Luther and others, says, "No, we can now come boldly 00:20:43.81\00:20:45.97 before the throne through Christ." 00:20:46.01\00:20:49.14 What a privilege that we can go directly to God. 00:20:49.18\00:20:52.68 And you can, again, read that verse in Daniel 7, verse 10, "A 00:20:52.71\00:20:56.28 fiery stream issued and came forth from before Him. 00:20:56.32\00:20:59.09 Thousands of thousands ministered to Him. 00:20:59.12\00:21:01.69 Ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him, and the court 00:21:01.72\00:21:05.59 was seated, and the books were opened." 00:21:05.63\00:21:07.66 So you've got this judgment taking place earlier in Daniel. 00:21:07.66\00:21:10.97 When you get to the last chapter, He stands up. 00:21:11.00\00:21:14.17 Judgment's over. 00:21:14.20\00:21:16.10 All through the book of Daniel, the people of God are being 00:21:16.14\00:21:17.87 oppressed by various kingdoms. 00:21:17.91\00:21:20.14 Michael stands up. 00:21:20.18\00:21:21.88 He girds His armor on, mounts His horse. 00:21:21.91\00:21:24.38 You see Him in Revelation, coming as the Word of God, going 00:21:24.41\00:21:27.88 forth to conquer. 00:21:27.92\00:21:29.58 And so--and to defend and to deliver his people. 00:21:29.62\00:21:32.02 So this is what's happening here in the first verses, and notice 00:21:32.05\00:21:36.16 what else it says. 00:21:36.19\00:21:38.79 "And then shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since 00:21:38.83\00:21:42.76 there was a nation, even to that time. 00:21:42.80\00:21:46.67 And at that time your people will be delivered, every one who 00:21:46.70\00:21:50.11 is found written in the book." 00:21:50.14\00:21:52.27 Wow, there's a lot there. 00:21:52.31\00:21:54.54 First of all, "time of trouble." 00:21:54.58\00:21:57.01 There's times of trouble. 00:21:57.05\00:21:58.75 How many of you have gone through a time of trouble? 00:21:58.78\00:22:01.02 Most of us, right? 00:22:01.05\00:22:02.95 Varying degrees, and you look at the news--and, boy, we just came 00:22:02.98\00:22:07.52 back from Australia, and they had fire and rain, just 00:22:07.56\00:22:11.23 everything burning up, and then it was flooding. 00:22:11.26\00:22:14.10 You think about World War I and the troubles in the trenches of 00:22:14.10\00:22:16.90 France and Germany. 00:22:16.93\00:22:18.53 It was terrible. 00:22:18.57\00:22:20.44 Think about the Civil War. 00:22:20.47\00:22:22.40 You know, America lost more people during battles in the 00:22:22.44\00:22:24.81 Civil War than the entire World War II. 00:22:24.84\00:22:28.11 I mean, just the bloodshed was--the carnage was 00:22:28.14\00:22:30.35 unbelievable, "time of trouble." 00:22:30.38\00:22:33.58 You think about the Holocaust and World War II. 00:22:33.62\00:22:37.62 Think about the tsunami in 2004, 260,000 people perish in 00:22:37.65\00:22:42.62 two days. 00:22:42.66\00:22:44.29 I mean, there has been some time of trouble, but when it talks 00:22:44.33\00:22:48.43 about this "time of trouble," it's not isolated to this place 00:22:48.46\00:22:51.97 or that place. 00:22:52.00\00:22:53.84 It's talking about a universal time of trouble, and it can't be 00:22:53.87\00:22:57.61 compared to anything before. 00:22:57.64\00:22:59.64 It says, "unlike anything." 00:22:59.67\00:23:02.21 Now, keep in mind, when you talk about the "time of trouble," 00:23:02.24\00:23:05.88 Jesus refers to this. 00:23:05.91\00:23:07.78 Let me read what Jesus says, and then I'll elaborate a 00:23:07.82\00:23:09.32 little bit. 00:23:09.35\00:23:10.75 Matthew 24, verse 15, if you got your Bibles, "Therefore when you 00:23:10.79\00:23:14.92 see the 'abomination of desolation,' spoken of by Daniel 00:23:14.96\00:23:17.59 the prophet, stand in the holy place." 00:23:17.63\00:23:21.66 Now, when we get to the dates in this study, I'll talk more about 00:23:21.70\00:23:25.50 that, but Jesus--first of all, does Jesus think that Daniel was 00:23:25.53\00:23:28.60 a prophet? 00:23:28.64\00:23:30.51 So we're real safe believing that Daniel is inspired by God 00:23:30.54\00:23:33.41 because Jesus said he was. 00:23:33.44\00:23:35.61 Otherwise, you've got to throw out the whole Bible. 00:23:35.64\00:23:37.88 In that case, what are you doing here? 00:23:37.91\00:23:39.91 So the whole purpose of studying this is because we believe the 00:23:39.95\00:23:42.65 Word of God is true. 00:23:42.68\00:23:44.22 Jesus said Daniel's a prophet, and he says the "'abomination of 00:23:44.25\00:23:48.36 desolation,' whoever reads, let him understand." 00:23:48.39\00:23:51.76 Now, this is a parenthetical statement. 00:23:51.79\00:23:53.50 People wonder, "Did Jesus say this?" 00:23:53.53\00:23:56.33 Did Matthew, writing it, say this? 00:23:56.36\00:23:59.23 Did a scribe insert it? 00:23:59.27\00:24:01.27 They're saying--you're supposed to pray. 00:24:01.30\00:24:03.30 Why does he say, "Let him who reads, understand"? 00:24:03.34\00:24:05.31 Because we just read in chapter 12, he says, "The wise 00:24:05.34\00:24:07.38 will understand." 00:24:07.41\00:24:08.78 He said not everyone will understand, and they may not 00:24:08.81\00:24:10.45 understand till the time of the end. 00:24:10.48\00:24:13.28 The time of the end, it'll be opened up. 00:24:13.31\00:24:15.22 So there's a prayer inserted in this statement, "Let the 00:24:15.25\00:24:17.62 wise understand." 00:24:17.65\00:24:20.02 "Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains." 00:24:20.06\00:24:24.33 Of course, it depends on where you are. 00:24:24.36\00:24:26.63 "Let those who are on their housetop go not down to take 00:24:26.66\00:24:29.56 anything out of his house." 00:24:29.60\00:24:31.50 This is going to be such a bad time. 00:24:31.53\00:24:33.10 You better head for the hills, like Lot running from Sodom. 00:24:33.13\00:24:36.30 He said, "Don't even look back." 00:24:36.34\00:24:38.61 "Let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes." 00:24:38.64\00:24:41.91 There's an urgency. 00:24:41.94\00:24:44.11 "But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are 00:24:44.15\00:24:47.18 nursing babies in--" make a note of this-- "those who are nursing 00:24:47.22\00:24:49.88 babies in those days, and pray that your flight be not be in 00:24:49.92\00:24:52.45 winter--" he's talking about fleeing. 00:24:52.49\00:24:55.46 Not a flight on an airplane. 00:24:55.49\00:24:58.19 "Not in winter or on the Sabbath." 00:24:58.23\00:25:00.66 He still knew God's people would be keeping the Sabbath. 00:25:00.70\00:25:02.80 Now listen to what Jesus said, verse 21, Matthew 24, "For then 00:25:02.83\00:25:06.00 there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the 00:25:06.03\00:25:10.54 beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever 00:25:10.57\00:25:14.88 shall be. 00:25:14.91\00:25:16.31 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be 00:25:16.34\00:25:20.42 saved," and the word "flesh" there doesn't just mean human. 00:25:20.45\00:25:23.69 It means no life. 00:25:23.72\00:25:25.52 They used to call--same word used for animal flesh would 00:25:25.55\00:25:28.09 be saved. 00:25:28.12\00:25:29.52 "But for the elect's sake those days will be shortened." 00:25:29.56\00:25:32.89 So that's pretty powerful. 00:25:32.93\00:25:34.60 Jesus is saying, "Yeah, Daniel meant what he said when he said 00:25:34.63\00:25:36.53 there's going to be a time of trouble such as there never has 00:25:36.56\00:25:38.60 been but--" and there's a time period connected with the time 00:25:38.63\00:25:42.67 of trouble. 00:25:42.70\00:25:45.34 The time of times and the dividing of time, three and a 00:25:45.37\00:25:48.61 half, 42 months, 1,260 days, the day and year is prophecy. 00:25:48.64\00:25:53.05 Typically that time period is a time of persecution. 00:25:53.08\00:25:57.29 It was during a time of trouble that it did not rain for 1,260 00:25:57.32\00:26:02.32 days in Elijah's time, right? 00:26:02.36\00:26:05.53 Jezebel was killing the prophets. 00:26:05.56\00:26:08.00 They're hiding in caves. 00:26:08.03\00:26:10.73 They're fleeing for their lives. 00:26:10.77\00:26:13.20 There was another three-and-a-half-year period of 00:26:13.23\00:26:15.14 time during the time of Christ's ministry, and during the time, 00:26:15.17\00:26:19.04 He had to hide. 00:26:19.07\00:26:20.64 They said, "You go to Jerusalem, they'll kill you." 00:26:20.68\00:26:22.21 They took up stones. 00:26:22.24\00:26:23.61 They wanted to throw Him off a cliff. 00:26:23.65\00:26:25.31 It was a time of persecution and rejection. 00:26:25.35\00:26:27.95 Then you've got that time at the end of three and a half years 00:26:27.98\00:26:30.39 when the disciples are in Jerusalem. 00:26:30.42\00:26:31.82 Stephen is killed--first martyr. 00:26:31.85\00:26:34.42 Another three-and-a-half-year time period. 00:26:34.46\00:26:38.19 Then you've got the three and a half years of the Dark Age. 00:26:38.23\00:26:41.63 Now, this is a time of trouble historically. 00:26:41.66\00:26:44.53 In Matthew 24, Jesus is answering three questions: "What 00:26:44.57\00:26:47.97 will be the sign of your coming?" 00:26:48.00\00:26:50.24 "The destruction of Jerusalem, the end of the world?" 00:26:50.27\00:26:53.61 He commingles his answer. 00:26:53.64\00:26:56.14 What happened to the Jews--if you've read the book, "Great 00:26:56.18\00:26:58.58 Controversy," it begins with a fall of Jerusalem. 00:26:58.61\00:27:01.28 What happens to the Jews is a preamble for the last days. 00:27:01.32\00:27:05.12 The great time of trouble that the Jews went through when 00:27:05.15\00:27:09.86 Jerusalem was destroyed was terrible. 00:27:09.89\00:27:12.03 You read about that. 00:27:12.06\00:27:14.66 That also prefigures a historic time of trouble from 538 to 1798 00:27:14.73\00:27:18.77 when the woman fled into the wilderness, and the dragon tried 00:27:18.80\00:27:22.34 to destroy her because he couldn't get to the man-child. 00:27:22.37\00:27:26.91 You still with me? 00:27:26.94\00:27:28.81 One thousand two hundred and sixty years where estimates 00:27:28.84\00:27:32.11 between 30 and 50 million Christians and Jews were killed 00:27:32.15\00:27:34.75 because of their faith by the political, religious government 00:27:34.78\00:27:39.62 of that time. 00:27:39.65\00:27:41.89 But then there's--it talks about at the end of that time, the sun 00:27:41.92\00:27:44.63 is darkened, the moon turns to blood, the stars fall 00:27:44.66\00:27:47.03 from heaven. 00:27:47.03\00:27:48.83 Those things happened historically, but those things 00:27:48.86\00:27:50.77 happen again in quick succession near the end of time. 00:27:50.80\00:27:54.37 You still with me? 00:27:54.40\00:27:55.84 Because it also says, "The heavens depart as the scroll, 00:27:55.87\00:27:58.07 and every island and mountain has moved out of its place." 00:27:58.11\00:28:01.31 That hasn't happened yet, so quickly--clearly, it happens 00:28:01.34\00:28:03.75 again in quick succession near the end of time. 00:28:03.78\00:28:06.48 But just before the end, there is a time of trouble. 00:28:06.51\00:28:10.32 Now, that time of trouble is connected with the 00:28:10.35\00:28:13.42 beast's power. 00:28:13.46\00:28:15.12 You cannot buy or sell, and you might divide it into two parts. 00:28:15.16\00:28:18.93 The first part, there's going to be a great persecution. 00:28:18.96\00:28:22.23 Probation is not closed yet, but during this time of great 00:28:22.26\00:28:26.03 darkness and persecution, when you can't buy or sell, 00:28:26.07\00:28:28.70 Christians will be sharing in great power. 00:28:28.74\00:28:32.37 When they're being tried, you'll be brought before kings 00:28:32.41\00:28:34.44 and rulers. 00:28:34.48\00:28:35.84 How long is that time? 00:28:35.88\00:28:37.48 Not sure. 00:28:37.51\00:28:39.05 Some thought, "Well, maybe that'll be three and a 00:28:39.08\00:28:40.62 half years," we don't know for sure. 00:28:40.65\00:28:42.05 But there's a small time of trouble, but once there is a 00:28:42.08\00:28:45.45 death decree, and once probation closes, you've got the--and it's 00:28:45.49\00:28:50.96 in the mother of all times of trouble, which is the seven last 00:28:50.99\00:28:53.33 plagues that you find in Revelation chapter 15 and 16, 00:28:53.36\00:28:58.33 and if you read through that, I think you'll agree, "Yeah, 00:28:58.37\00:29:01.57 that's got to be the worst." 00:29:01.60\00:29:03.77 "Men are scorched with great heat. 00:29:03.81\00:29:05.71 The oceans have turned to blood. 00:29:05.74\00:29:07.18 The fresh waters have turned to blood." 00:29:07.21\00:29:08.94 That's where most of the people in the world live. 00:29:08.98\00:29:10.95 You know, most of the people in the world, as of about four 00:29:10.98\00:29:12.81 years ago, are now in urban areas, where, before, they used 00:29:12.85\00:29:15.32 to be in the country. 00:29:15.35\00:29:17.25 The cities--and soon 60% of the world's population will be in 00:29:17.29\00:29:20.22 the cities, and 90% of the world's cities are by the oceans 00:29:20.26\00:29:24.93 or rivers. 00:29:24.96\00:29:27.30 Very few cities are not by an ocean or a river, right? 00:29:27.36\00:29:30.27 Including Sacramento and others. 00:29:30.30\00:29:33.37 They turn to blood. 00:29:33.40\00:29:35.84 Darkness on the seat of the beast. 00:29:35.87\00:29:37.31 "Noisome, grievous sores." 00:29:37.34\00:29:38.71 People are in--I mean, they're gnawing their tongues from pain, 00:29:38.74\00:29:41.64 and it's unimaginable, that great time of trouble. 00:29:41.68\00:29:45.61 I'm not worried about that part because the Bible promises, 00:29:45.65\00:29:49.28 Psalm 91, during that great time of trouble, "Only with your eyes 00:29:49.32\00:29:53.42 will you see and behold the punishment of the wicked." 00:29:53.46\00:29:57.19 "No plague will come near your dwelling. 00:29:57.23\00:29:59.89 A thousand may fall in your hand, ten thousand at your right 00:29:59.93\00:30:01.96 side," I'm misquoting this slightly, but you know, 00:30:02.00\00:30:04.20 Psalm 91. 00:30:04.23\00:30:05.80 So, you see, and it's happening around you. 00:30:05.83\00:30:07.30 You're seeing it happen around you. 00:30:07.34\00:30:08.70 I don't believe the secret rapture that we leave before 00:30:08.74\00:30:10.41 this time of trouble. 00:30:10.44\00:30:12.57 "But no plague will come nigh your dwelling." 00:30:12.61\00:30:14.64 Did God protect the children of Israel during that great time of 00:30:14.68\00:30:17.28 trouble before the exodus? 00:30:17.31\00:30:19.51 Is the Lord going to come and get us out of this world? 00:30:19.55\00:30:23.25 There'll be a mass exodus when the Lord descends from 00:30:23.28\00:30:25.72 heaven, right? 00:30:25.75\00:30:27.59 We're here during those seven last plagues, but He preserves 00:30:27.62\00:30:30.79 us during that. 00:30:30.83\00:30:32.69 There were ten plagues that fell on Egypt. 00:30:32.73\00:30:35.06 The first three plagues, the Israelites experience the 00:30:35.10\00:30:37.93 suffering along with the Egyptians, but God protected 00:30:37.97\00:30:41.00 them through the seven last plagues that fell on Egypt. 00:30:41.04\00:30:45.64 So there's a lesson there, and he'll protect us through the 00:30:45.67\00:30:48.11 seven last plagues. 00:30:48.14\00:30:49.88 So there's a great time of trouble. 00:30:49.91\00:30:51.95 Says, "Every one who's delivered is--who is written in the book." 00:30:51.98\00:30:54.42 What book do you think that is? 00:30:54.45\00:30:56.85 The Book of the Lamb, the Book of Life, and is your name 00:30:56.89\00:31:00.89 written there? 00:31:00.92\00:31:03.26 The Bible says, "Those who think often upon the Lord and talk 00:31:03.29\00:31:06.03 about Him, they pray," says, "I will not take their names out of 00:31:06.06\00:31:09.56 My book that I've written." 00:31:09.60\00:31:12.03 And so if you have a relationship with the Lord, 00:31:12.07\00:31:14.37 you're following the Lord to the best of your ability, then 00:31:14.40\00:31:18.81 you've committed your life to Him. 00:31:18.84\00:31:20.51 You're trusting in His salvation. 00:31:20.54\00:31:21.91 Your name is entered into the Book of Life. 00:31:21.94\00:31:24.11 All right, so that's verses 1, that we looked at there. 00:31:24.15\00:31:30.82 I'm going to read something to you from "Prophets and Kings" 00:31:30.85\00:31:32.32 278, "We are standing on the threshold of a crisis of 00:31:32.35\00:31:35.46 the ages. 00:31:35.49\00:31:38.23 In quick succession the judgments of God will follow one 00:31:38.26\00:31:40.40 another, fire, flood, earthquake, with war 00:31:40.43\00:31:43.40 and bloodshed." 00:31:43.43\00:31:45.50 Once those angels release their grip, the Bible says right now 00:31:45.53\00:31:48.14 those four angels are holding back the winds of strife. 00:31:48.17\00:31:50.27 Why? 00:31:50.31\00:31:52.47 Waiting for the servants of God to be sealed in their forehead. 00:31:52.51\00:31:55.28 Do you and I get to participate in helping others learn the 00:31:55.31\00:31:58.48 message so they can receive the seal? 00:31:58.51\00:32:00.98 Yeah, so by our ministry, we can help hasten that day. 00:32:01.02\00:32:04.85 All right, verse 2, "Many of those who sleep in the dust of 00:32:04.89\00:32:08.79 the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, some to shame 00:32:08.82\00:32:12.46 and everlasting contempt." 00:32:12.49\00:32:15.23 Now, Jesus tells us that there's two resurrections. 00:32:15.26\00:32:18.40 You've got the resurrection of the just, you've got the 00:32:18.43\00:32:21.17 resurrection of the lost, but this is making it sound like, at 00:32:21.20\00:32:24.17 the end of that time, both resurrections are happening. 00:32:24.21\00:32:25.71 Why? 00:32:25.74\00:32:27.64 Is there a special group resurrected when Jesus comes 00:32:27.68\00:32:31.45 that is lost? 00:32:31.48\00:32:33.78 We know the dead in Christ rise. 00:32:33.82\00:32:36.38 All right, listen to what it says here in Revelation chapter 00:32:36.42\00:32:39.29 1, verse 7: "Behold, He's coming in the clouds, and every eye 00:32:39.32\00:32:43.43 will see Him--" talking about when He comes next-- "even those 00:32:43.46\00:32:47.50 who pierced Him." 00:32:47.56\00:32:49.96 How can those who pierced Him--when He was on the cross, 00:32:50.00\00:32:52.50 He was pierced. 00:32:52.53\00:32:54.24 His hands were pierced. 00:32:54.27\00:32:56.84 His side was pierced. 00:32:56.87\00:32:59.14 His brow was pierced with thorns. 00:32:59.17\00:33:01.54 The people that were responsible for His execution, not just the 00:33:01.58\00:33:04.15 soldiers themselves, but the priests that put them up to it, 00:33:04.18\00:33:06.61 Pilate will be there and Caiaphas. 00:33:06.65\00:33:09.25 They're going to be raised to see Him come in glory. 00:33:09.28\00:33:11.65 This is called a special resurrection. 00:33:11.69\00:33:14.36 Some people struggle with these exceptions. 00:33:14.39\00:33:16.69 You know, it's true that "It's appointed unto men once to die, 00:33:16.73\00:33:21.06 after that, the judgment," but there's a couple of exceptions. 00:33:21.10\00:33:24.37 Enoch did not die. 00:33:24.40\00:33:27.27 Elijah did not die, right? 00:33:27.30\00:33:29.67 I mean, God's allowed to make exceptions because He's God. 00:33:29.70\00:33:32.21 And so, yes, most of the people, the righteous are raised, 00:33:32.24\00:33:34.94 first resurrection. 00:33:34.98\00:33:36.78 There'll be a few wicked raised. 00:33:36.81\00:33:38.31 Let me give you another verse. 00:33:38.35\00:33:39.71 Matthew 26, Jesus is talking to the high priest when he said, "I 00:33:39.75\00:33:42.18 adjure thee under an oath, "'Are you the Christ?' 00:33:42.22\00:33:45.12 Jesus responds, 'It is as you said. 00:33:45.15\00:33:48.86 Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son 00:33:48.89\00:33:52.59 of Man sitting at the right hand of power, and coming in the 00:33:52.63\00:33:55.90 clouds of heaven.'" 00:33:55.93\00:33:58.50 Caiaphas would be raised to see that Jesus is the Messiah. 00:33:58.53\00:34:02.47 And so there are going to be some who were especially 00:34:02.50\00:34:04.94 involved in the trial and execution of Christ that they're 00:34:04.97\00:34:08.54 going to have that resurrection. 00:34:08.58\00:34:11.08 But for the majority, the wicked, their resurrection takes 00:34:11.11\00:34:15.75 place at the end of the 1,000 years. 00:34:15.78\00:34:17.92 It says, "Blessed and holy is he that has part in the first 00:34:17.95\00:34:19.92 resurrection," Revelation chapter 20. 00:34:19.95\00:34:23.53 The rest of the dead--if the dead in Christ rise first, who 00:34:23.56\00:34:26.63 are the rest of the dead? 00:34:26.66\00:34:28.83 The wicked. 00:34:28.86\00:34:31.03 They come forth after the thousand years are finished. 00:34:31.07\00:34:33.77 John 5:28 and 29, "Do not marvel at this, for the hour is coming 00:34:33.80\00:34:38.71 in which all that are in the graves will hear His voice and 00:34:38.74\00:34:41.48 come forth, those that have done good, to the resurrection of 00:34:41.51\00:34:44.61 life, those who have done evil--" now, notice, aren't we 00:34:44.65\00:34:47.88 saved by faith? 00:34:47.92\00:34:50.05 But here, Jesus makes it sound like we're judged by works. 00:34:50.09\00:34:53.36 That's what the Bible says: You are saved by faith. 00:34:53.39\00:34:56.83 You are judged by works. 00:34:56.86\00:34:59.19 Your works show if you have a saving faith. 00:34:59.23\00:35:02.20 That's not that hard. 00:35:02.23\00:35:04.87 And a lot of people say, "Lord, Lord," and they don't do what 00:35:04.90\00:35:07.07 God calls them to do, and He says, "Don't call me 'Lord, 00:35:07.10\00:35:08.97 Lord.' You don't really trust Me." 00:35:09.00\00:35:11.51 All right, and, of course, the wicked are raised to the 00:35:11.54\00:35:13.54 resurrection of condemnation. 00:35:13.58\00:35:15.88 Now we're going to Daniel 12, verse 3: "Those who are wise 00:35:15.91\00:35:20.05 will shine like the brightness of the firmament, and those who 00:35:20.08\00:35:23.28 turn many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever." 00:35:23.32\00:35:27.29 And he's gone from dust, "Those who sleep in the dust of the 00:35:27.32\00:35:30.99 earth shall awake." 00:35:31.03\00:35:34.00 So it tells us that, when Michael stands up, not long 00:35:34.03\00:35:36.40 after that, there's a resurrection, so we are 00:35:36.43\00:35:38.63 definitely talking about the time of the end. 00:35:38.67\00:35:40.64 We agreed? 00:35:40.67\00:35:42.77 And then it's also telling us that "Those who are wise--" what 00:35:42.80\00:35:47.34 is "wisdom"? 00:35:47.38\00:35:48.91 We're going to talk about the Queen of Sheba in our 00:35:48.94\00:35:50.58 message today. 00:35:50.61\00:35:52.08 "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." 00:35:52.11\00:35:55.55 So these are the God-fearing people, "And those who turn many 00:35:55.58\00:36:00.92 to righteousness like the stars forever and ever." 00:36:00.96\00:36:05.36 "He that wins souls is wise." 00:36:05.39\00:36:09.03 You know, David prays in Psalm 51, "Take not Your Holy Spirit 00:36:09.06\00:36:12.47 from me," "Then sinners will be converted to You." 00:36:12.50\00:36:16.64 We must be Spirit-filled, and what's our goal when we are 00:36:16.67\00:36:19.44 Spirit-Filled? 00:36:19.47\00:36:21.98 Jesus said, "Wait in Jerusalem. 00:36:22.01\00:36:24.91 You'll receive the promise of the Holy Spirit, and you will be 00:36:24.95\00:36:27.05 My witnesses." 00:36:27.08\00:36:28.88 We will be turning others to righteousness. 00:36:28.92\00:36:30.85 The mission of every Christian should be you come to Christ, 00:36:30.89\00:36:32.99 and then you go for Christ. 00:36:33.02\00:36:35.09 You love the Lord with all your heart, and because of that, you 00:36:35.12\00:36:37.36 then love your neighbor, and you share the Gospel, using your 00:36:37.39\00:36:38.93 different gifts. 00:36:38.96\00:36:42.60 Daniel 11:33, it says, "And those of the people who 00:36:42.63\00:36:49.67 understand shall instruct many, yet for many days, they'll fall 00:36:49.70\00:36:55.24 by the sword and by flame and by captivity and plundering." 00:36:55.28\00:36:58.88 Says there's going to be a people who will be wise. 00:36:58.91\00:37:01.48 They're understanding, but they are a persecuted people. 00:37:01.52\00:37:05.12 And Matthew chapter 13, verse 43, "Then the righteous will 00:37:05.15\00:37:10.56 shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. 00:37:10.59\00:37:13.50 He who has ears, let him hear." 00:37:13.53\00:37:18.20 Jesus says, you know, He's called us to be that light on 00:37:18.23\00:37:20.20 the hill, to be witnesses. 00:37:20.24\00:37:22.10 Go to verse 4, Daniel 12, verse 4: "But you, O Daniel, shut up 00:37:22.14\00:37:27.08 the words, and seal the book until the time of the end. 00:37:27.11\00:37:30.01 Many will run to and fro, and knowledge will increase." 00:37:30.05\00:37:33.05 Well, as an evangelist, we like to teach this literally. 00:37:33.08\00:37:35.18 People are running to and fro more now than they ever have, 00:37:35.22\00:37:37.55 and technology has increased now more than ever before. 00:37:37.59\00:37:42.49 Nobody argues that. 00:37:42.52\00:37:44.93 That, to me, is, I think, it just--it's 00:37:44.96\00:37:46.33 certainly unprecedented. 00:37:46.36\00:37:47.73 I don't think this is the primary thing Daniel is talking 00:37:47.76\00:37:49.26 about here. 00:37:49.30\00:37:51.30 No question, we are living in the day when knowledge--I mean, 00:37:51.33\00:37:54.00 just think about the coalesce, concentrated knowledge you've 00:37:54.04\00:37:59.34 got in your smartphone. 00:37:59.37\00:38:02.01 How dependent has the world become on their smartphone? 00:38:02.04\00:38:06.15 I played racquetball with a guy a few weeks ago and he's got 00:38:06.18\00:38:08.32 this big lump in his pocket, and I said, "Don't you want to put 00:38:08.35\00:38:10.09 your wallet somewhere else?" 00:38:10.12\00:38:11.92 He's, "Oh, no, that's my phone." 00:38:11.95\00:38:13.32 I said, "You're playing racquetball with your phone?" 00:38:13.36\00:38:14.72 He said, "Yeah, I'm counting my heartbeats and my steps." 00:38:14.76\00:38:17.23 I mean, people use their phones for everything now, and they got 00:38:17.26\00:38:20.53 an app for everything, and if you had shown that to the 00:38:20.56\00:38:23.50 apostles, they would've thought you were possessed by an 00:38:23.53\00:38:25.47 evil spirit. 00:38:25.50\00:38:27.34 Just think about the knowledge now that we have at 00:38:27.37\00:38:29.77 our fingertips. 00:38:29.80\00:38:32.24 But what is He really talking about? 00:38:32.27\00:38:34.54 What does it mean to run to and fro? 00:38:34.58\00:38:36.44 Zechariah 4:10, "They are the eyes of the Lord, which run to 00:38:36.48\00:38:40.85 and fro throughout the whole earth," running to and fro often 00:38:40.88\00:38:43.89 in searching. 00:38:43.92\00:38:46.52 Didn't just mean travel. 00:38:46.55\00:38:48.76 It is true, "National Geographic" tells us we're 00:38:48.79\00:38:50.83 living in an age now where people are traveling more and 00:38:50.86\00:38:53.70 farther from home than any other time in history, but running to 00:38:53.73\00:38:57.87 and fro means searching. 00:38:57.90\00:38:59.83 Look in Amos 8, verse 12: "They'll wander from sea to sea, 00:38:59.87\00:39:03.10 and from north to east, they'll run to and fro, seeking, to and 00:39:03.14\00:39:06.11 fro, seeking the word of the Lord, but not find it." 00:39:06.14\00:39:10.58 So what's going to happen in the last days? 00:39:10.61\00:39:12.28 Well, what's the concern of Daniel in the chapter? 00:39:12.31\00:39:14.68 He said, "People don't understand." 00:39:14.72\00:39:17.35 Several times, Daniel has a vision, then later, the angel 00:39:17.39\00:39:19.59 helps him understand, and now he said, "I don't understand," he 00:39:19.62\00:39:22.52 said, "but the wise will understand." 00:39:22.56\00:39:24.16 How are they going to understand? 00:39:24.19\00:39:25.96 "They will run to and fro, running to and fro--" where? 00:39:25.99\00:39:29.10 From Genesis to Revelation. 00:39:29.13\00:39:32.80 They're going through the Word of God. 00:39:32.83\00:39:34.70 They're seeking, and they're discovering what the 00:39:34.74\00:39:36.94 prophecies mean. 00:39:36.97\00:39:38.41 They're discovering more about the truth. 00:39:38.44\00:39:40.94 This is the greatest knowledge that God speaks of in His Word. 00:39:40.98\00:39:43.78 So, "Shut up the words. 00:39:43.81\00:39:46.98 Seal the book till the time of the end." 00:39:47.02\00:39:48.72 It's going to be sealed. 00:39:48.75\00:39:50.35 God says, you know, "Well, it won't be until the time of 00:39:50.39\00:39:51.85 the end." 00:39:51.89\00:39:53.32 They understand. 00:39:53.36\00:39:54.79 Why? 00:39:54.82\00:39:56.32 Was God trying to hide it? 00:39:56.36\00:39:57.83 Well, it was more relevant at the end, for one thing. 00:39:57.86\00:39:59.33 Another reason, the Bibles had been taken away from people 00:39:59.36\00:40:00.83 until Gutenberg, and they just didn't have it. 00:40:00.86\00:40:02.76 The two witnesses were clothed in sackcloth for how long? 00:40:02.80\00:40:07.30 One thousand two hundred and sixty years. 00:40:07.34\00:40:10.41 So the Word of God was hidden, but after that time period, 00:40:10.44\00:40:13.24 Bible societies were formed, Bibles, the printing became a 00:40:13.27\00:40:17.28 lot easier, and it was distributed widely, and people 00:40:17.31\00:40:20.68 began to run to and fro through--I'll tell you 00:40:20.72\00:40:22.48 what, friends. 00:40:22.52\00:40:24.02 I can run to and fro through the Word of God now in my lifetime. 00:40:24.05\00:40:28.19 Going from paper to digital, it's amazing how quick I can 00:40:28.22\00:40:31.16 search things and find them now. 00:40:31.19\00:40:33.56 I can't imagine going back to my "Strong's Concordance," I'm 00:40:33.60\00:40:35.03 sorry, thumbing through all that microscopic print for one word, 00:40:35.06\00:40:39.37 and then say, "No, that's not it," and then in, thumbing 00:40:39.40\00:40:41.10 through another one, lines and lines of every word in 00:40:41.14\00:40:44.11 the Bible. 00:40:44.14\00:40:45.51 That's if you had "The Exhaustive," there's a reason 00:40:45.54\00:40:47.58 they called it "The Exhaustive Strong's Concordance." 00:40:47.61\00:40:52.35 Now "People are running to and fro, and knowledge 00:40:52.38\00:40:54.12 is increased." 00:40:54.15\00:40:55.58 Go to verse 5 and 6: "Then I, Daniel, looked, and there stood 00:40:55.62\00:40:59.45 two others, on the riverbank, one on one side of the river, 00:40:59.49\00:41:03.09 and another on the other. 00:41:03.12\00:41:04.79 And he said to the man clothed in linen," now, you notice, 00:41:04.83\00:41:07.23 this starts, you go to chapter 10. 00:41:07.23\00:41:09.03 It says they're by the Tigris River. 00:41:09.06\00:41:11.77 The whole vision, from chapter 10 through 12, is one vision. 00:41:11.80\00:41:14.24 So he's returning to this, the riverbank vision, and one angel 00:41:14.27\00:41:18.94 says to the man clothed in linen, who is above the 00:41:18.97\00:41:21.14 river--so you've got this--either Gabriel or someone 00:41:21.18\00:41:24.75 who is a Christ above the river, and they're saying, "How long 00:41:24.78\00:41:28.82 till the fulfillment of these wonders?" 00:41:28.85\00:41:30.95 So the context of what you're going to hear about the time 00:41:30.99\00:41:33.42 prophecies is in response to a question. 00:41:33.46\00:41:35.96 These wonders is not just talking about the prophecies of 00:41:35.99\00:41:39.09 chapter 10, 11, and 12. 00:41:39.13\00:41:42.60 These wonders is talking about the battle between the kingdoms 00:41:42.63\00:41:45.77 that you see from chapter 1 to chapter 12. 00:41:45.80\00:41:49.54 The whole book of Daniel and all the prophecies are all revolving 00:41:49.57\00:41:51.77 around who is the real King. 00:41:51.81\00:41:55.74 Isn't that right? 00:41:55.78\00:41:57.55 Nebuchadnezzar ends up saying, "Lord, you're King," and 00:41:57.58\00:42:00.45 Nebuchadnezzar bows after the image is interpreted, saying, 00:42:00.48\00:42:05.29 "Your God is the God of gods." 00:42:05.32\00:42:07.26 Darius says, "Your God is King." 00:42:07.29\00:42:09.72 So through the whole book, it's like, is Persia in charge, is 00:42:09.76\00:42:11.86 Babylon in charge, or is God in charge? 00:42:11.89\00:42:14.56 Is it the Greeks, is it the Romans, is it the little horn? 00:42:14.60\00:42:17.20 Who is the real King? 00:42:17.23\00:42:19.07 That's the whole theme through the book of Daniel, and the 00:42:19.10\00:42:20.84 ultimate answer is, of course, Jesus, Michael, stands up. 00:42:20.87\00:42:24.74 He is the King of kings. 00:42:24.77\00:42:27.24 And he said, "How long shall be the fulfillment of 00:42:27.28\00:42:28.98 these wonders?" 00:42:29.01\00:42:31.11 Now, this is so important to understand because God often 00:42:31.15\00:42:35.45 gives the final verses. 00:42:35.48\00:42:37.65 He says, "Time of trouble, every one written in the book of life 00:42:37.69\00:42:40.66 be saved. 00:42:40.69\00:42:42.59 You'll shine forever." 00:42:42.62\00:42:44.33 Then God goes back and gives more detail. 00:42:44.36\00:42:45.89 He's going back to these visions that had been covered, many of 00:42:45.93\00:42:47.73 the visions about the kingdoms, and you go to Daniel 12, verse 00:42:47.76\00:42:52.17 7, "I heard the man clothed in linen, who was above the waters 00:42:52.20\00:42:55.10 of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand 00:42:55.14\00:42:57.81 to the heavens, and he swore by Him who lives forever, that it 00:42:57.84\00:43:01.01 shall be for a time, times, and half a time, when the power of 00:43:01.04\00:43:05.81 the holy people has been completely shattered, and all 00:43:05.85\00:43:09.52 these things shall be finished." 00:43:09.55\00:43:11.22 In other words, the finishing of the shattering of the power of 00:43:11.25\00:43:14.59 God's people. 00:43:14.62\00:43:16.16 They were persecuted, scattered, and shattered for 1,260 years, 00:43:16.19\00:43:19.23 then the beast receives a deadly wound. 00:43:19.26\00:43:23.40 And then this is all happening in the backdrop of a great 00:43:23.43\00:43:25.67 Reformation, and Bibles being printed, and the 00:43:25.70\00:43:28.34 Great Awakening. 00:43:28.37\00:43:29.77 1798, God raises up a new country that becomes--speaks 00:43:29.80\00:43:34.04 like a lamb. 00:43:34.08\00:43:35.71 It becomes the seat of international missions and also 00:43:35.74\00:43:40.12 becomes the largest military power in the world. 00:43:40.15\00:43:42.02 Starts out protecting religious freedom. 00:43:42.05\00:43:45.99 And so it's reaching down to our day here. 00:43:46.02\00:43:50.09 Notice also, this angel raises his hands. 00:43:50.13\00:43:53.56 I'm watching my clock because I want to get into the time. 00:43:53.60\00:43:56.26 In verse 5 and 6, "The angel who I saw--" this is Revelation 10:5 00:43:56.30\00:44:00.10 and 6. 00:44:00.14\00:44:01.87 Notice, "Standing on the sea and the dry land, raises up his hand 00:44:01.90\00:44:04.11 to heaven, swears by Him who lives forever and ever, who 00:44:04.14\00:44:06.54 created the heaven and the earth and the things that are in it, 00:44:06.57\00:44:09.54 and the sea and the things that are in it, that there should be 00:44:09.58\00:44:13.01 delay time no longer," no longer delay in these prophecies 00:44:13.05\00:44:16.72 being fulfilled. 00:44:16.75\00:44:18.32 This is a parallel of Daniel chapter 12, verse 7, 00:44:18.35\00:44:20.99 Revelation 10. 00:44:21.02\00:44:23.02 Angel bowing, lifting his hand there by the rivers. 00:44:23.06\00:44:25.03 A lot of comparisons. 00:44:25.06\00:44:27.40 All right, Chapter 12, verse 8 and 10, "Although--" Daniel 12:8 00:44:27.40\00:44:32.30 and 10, "Although I heard, I did not understand." 00:44:32.33\00:44:35.34 Notice the big struggle, "I don't understand." 00:44:35.37\00:44:38.77 "Then I said, 'My Lord, what shall be the end of 00:44:38.81\00:44:40.24 these things?' 00:44:40.28\00:44:42.18 He said, 'Go your way, Daniel, for the words are closed and 00:44:42.21\00:44:45.21 sealed till the time of the end.'" 00:44:45.25\00:44:48.32 "Don't worry, don't fret, Daniel, it's going to happen 00:44:48.35\00:44:50.29 after you're gone." 00:44:50.32\00:44:53.19 "Many shall be purified and made white, and refined, but the 00:44:53.22\00:44:56.59 wicked will do wickedly, and none of the wicked will 00:44:56.62\00:44:59.03 understand, but the wise will understand." 00:44:59.06\00:45:01.60 I love this verse because He says, "many." 00:45:01.63\00:45:03.93 You know, so often, Jesus says, "It's the many who are on the 00:45:03.97\00:45:06.17 wide road. 00:45:06.20\00:45:07.87 Before it's over, many will be purified and made white." 00:45:07.90\00:45:09.70 I want to be one of those many, don't you? 00:45:09.74\00:45:11.64 And He says, "The many are the ones who fear the Lord. 00:45:11.67\00:45:13.54 They're the wise. 00:45:13.58\00:45:15.54 They will understand." 00:45:15.58\00:45:17.11 Says there's going to be a group of people in the end that will 00:45:17.15\00:45:19.08 be purified, made white, and they will understand from 00:45:19.11\00:45:21.62 running to and fro and searching the Word of God. 00:45:21.65\00:45:24.35 These prophecies will come to light. 00:45:24.39\00:45:26.29 You know, this is The Great Advent Awakening that happened 00:45:26.32\00:45:29.89 about 150 years ago, a little more than that. 00:45:29.92\00:45:34.00 Now, they go through trials, and it says in 1 Peter 1:7, "That 00:45:34.00\00:45:39.10 the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than 00:45:39.13\00:45:42.90 gold that perishes, though it's tested by fire, be found to 00:45:42.94\00:45:45.71 praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ." 00:45:45.74\00:45:48.88 All right, now Daniel chapter 12, verse 11 and 12, and here's 00:45:48.91\00:45:53.55 the prophesy numbers people wonder about. 00:45:53.58\00:45:57.49 "From the time that the daily sacrifice is taken away, and the 00:45:57.52\00:46:01.36 abomination of desolation is set up, there'll be 1,290 days." 00:46:01.39\00:46:06.53 Wait, wait, I thought it always says 60. 00:46:06.56\00:46:08.56 Now we're jumping to 90. 00:46:08.60\00:46:10.77 That's adding 30 days. 00:46:10.80\00:46:12.93 "Blessed is he--" by the way, that was one month in the 00:46:12.97\00:46:14.67 lunar calendar. 00:46:14.70\00:46:16.97 "Blessed is he who waits, and comes to the 1,335 days." 00:46:17.01\00:46:20.54 Now we got three time periods. 00:46:20.58\00:46:22.74 Marsha, go ahead, put that chart up on the screen for me for our 00:46:22.78\00:46:25.68 local audience, and you can put the feed out to those that 00:46:25.71\00:46:29.02 are watching. 00:46:29.05\00:46:30.39 Three time periods given in this one chapter: 1,260, 00:46:30.42\00:46:32.79 1,290, 1,335. 00:46:32.82\00:46:34.76 Traditionally, most Adventist scholars believe you stay with a 00:46:34.79\00:46:39.96 historic view on this prophecy. 00:46:40.00\00:46:43.43 You've got the beginning, really, of the little horn power 00:46:43.47\00:46:48.87 and the abomination of desolation. 00:46:48.90\00:46:50.61 Now, for the Jews, an abomination of desolation was 00:46:50.64\00:46:53.68 when you brought an idol and idolatry into the house of God. 00:46:53.71\00:46:58.71 They called it the abomination of the heathen whenever they 00:46:58.75\00:47:02.05 got--Solomon did it when his wives got him to bring idols in. 00:47:02.08\00:47:04.72 Manasseh did it, they brought idols, and they called it the 00:47:04.75\00:47:07.62 abomination, with the conversion of Clovis, who was one of the 00:47:07.66\00:47:12.56 first barbarian kings, at 508. 00:47:12.59\00:47:16.30 He is the king that was also instrumental in bringing down 00:47:16.33\00:47:19.67 these three other horns, the Visigoths, the Heruli, the 00:47:19.70\00:47:22.84 Ostrogoths, that were Aryans. 00:47:22.87\00:47:25.64 They did not believe in the Triune God. 00:47:25.67\00:47:28.58 They believed that Jesus was created. 00:47:28.61\00:47:31.55 And Clovis, in his conversion, he set up a combination of 00:47:31.58\00:47:35.42 church and state. 00:47:35.45\00:47:38.12 Thirty years later, Justinian, the Roman emperor, he went the 00:47:38.15\00:47:42.22 next step in 538, and he said, "I am going to issue an edict 00:47:42.26\00:47:48.26 making the bishop of Rome the new ruler of the church." 00:47:48.30\00:47:52.70 No longer with a capital in Jerusalem, now it's being moved 00:47:52.73\00:47:54.94 to Rome. 00:47:54.97\00:47:56.54 That's where the seat of the little horn was. 00:47:56.57\00:47:58.04 Bible says that the dragon gave him his power, 00:47:58.07\00:48:00.38 his seat and great authority, his throne. 00:48:00.41\00:48:03.58 And both those dates, one is 1290, one is 1260, they both 00:48:03.61\00:48:07.78 reached to 1798. 00:48:07.82\00:48:10.52 That's when the beast receives a deadly wound. 00:48:10.55\00:48:13.32 That's when he makes an end of shattering the power of the 00:48:13.36\00:48:17.13 people of God. 00:48:17.16\00:48:19.16 And then you've got the 1335. 00:48:19.19\00:48:21.23 It says, "Blessed is he that comes to the 1335--" 00:48:21.26\00:48:24.97 Why is he blessed? 00:48:25.00\00:48:26.87 That's the year of The Great Advent Awakening when the 00:48:26.90\00:48:28.70 prophecies of Daniel were opened. 00:48:28.74\00:48:32.14 The message of Miller, where he started to give the historic 00:48:32.17\00:48:34.81 interpretation of these prophecies, incredible light 00:48:34.84\00:48:37.25 came on the people. 00:48:37.28\00:48:38.91 They didn't have everything right, but, boy, they had a lot 00:48:38.95\00:48:40.98 of things right, and they were blessed because they're all 00:48:41.02\00:48:43.39 excited the Second Coming is taking place, and so that 00:48:43.42\00:48:45.85 happened in 1843. 00:48:45.89\00:48:48.86 Now, in fairness, I should probably say I know there are 00:48:48.89\00:48:53.53 other views on this subject, and even among our scholars. 00:48:53.56\00:48:58.57 I've been reading this week--friends, pray for me. 00:48:58.60\00:49:01.54 I tell you, there's a lot of stuff out there. 00:49:01.57\00:49:03.71 Great scholar in our church, he was a vice president, Roy Allan 00:49:03.74\00:49:06.71 Anderson, good books on prophecy, he said, "You know, 00:49:06.74\00:49:10.61 there is some mystery. 00:49:10.65\00:49:12.51 It could be the typical historic interpretation, but," he said, 00:49:12.55\00:49:15.58 "it could be that it's talking about Islam because it's 1,335 00:49:15.62\00:49:21.59 days from the call of the Hagia of--" not the Hagia, the, yeah-- 00:49:21.62\00:49:27.40 "of Muhammad until the Ottoman Empire fell." 00:49:27.40\00:49:30.23 Now, I don't agree with him, but that's one view that was put out 00:49:30.27\00:49:32.20 for years, Roy Allan Anderson. 00:49:32.23\00:49:34.84 You got a lot of the Protestant people. 00:49:34.87\00:49:38.11 They say, "Oh, this is all in the past. 00:49:38.14\00:49:39.91 It was Antiochus Epiphanes," so that doesn't work. 00:49:39.94\00:49:42.04 He was a Greek, Seleucid king who attack Jerusalem, and he 00:49:42.08\00:49:44.78 brought an abomination to the temple. 00:49:44.81\00:49:46.65 That doesn't work because the prophecies of Daniel go way 00:49:46.68\00:49:49.12 beyond the Greek Empire. 00:49:49.15\00:49:51.39 They go beyond pagan Rome, they go beyond papal Rome. 00:49:51.42\00:49:55.12 So why would it stop there, way back, with the Greeks? 00:49:55.16\00:49:57.16 That doesn't make sense. 00:49:57.19\00:49:59.83 This is the one that I think makes the most sense. 00:49:59.86\00:50:02.46 There are people who then say, "Well, maybe this is a time 00:50:02.50\00:50:04.93 where you are to apply it. 00:50:04.97\00:50:07.64 They're not literal years, or days don't represent years, but 00:50:07.67\00:50:10.64 they're literal days." 00:50:10.67\00:50:12.81 And then that means that there's going to be 00:50:12.84\00:50:14.41 three-and-a-half-year time of trouble, and there'll be a 00:50:14.44\00:50:16.64 Sunday law, and then 30 days after the Sunday law, then the 00:50:16.68\00:50:19.25 plagues begin, and the plagues last 45 days, and you know what? 00:50:19.28\00:50:23.99 You'll have to wait and see. 00:50:24.02\00:50:26.76 I don't teach that because what good will a time prophecy be 00:50:26.79\00:50:31.03 once probation closes? 00:50:31.06\00:50:34.00 I mean, how's that going to redeem anybody? 00:50:34.03\00:50:36.46 The purpose of prophecy is redemptive. 00:50:36.50\00:50:38.90 It's to save people. 00:50:38.93\00:50:41.00 And so, you know, when the time comes, if that happens, it 00:50:41.04\00:50:45.67 happens, but I think we need to stick with the historic view of 00:50:45.71\00:50:48.84 these things. 00:50:48.88\00:50:50.85 The fact is the abomination of desolation, Mary worship, the 00:50:50.88\00:50:54.55 Mass, confessing your sins to a priest, believing that hell 00:50:54.58\00:51:00.66 burns forever, purgatory limbo, all of these abominations, so 00:51:00.69\00:51:05.23 truth was cast to the ground. 00:51:05.26\00:51:07.23 It all came in during this time period with the support of 00:51:07.30\00:51:09.53 church and state, and it lasted for over a millennia. 00:51:09.56\00:51:13.87 This is the stuff that history looks at. 00:51:13.90\00:51:15.84 History does not look at a headline one day 00:51:15.87\00:51:17.81 that disappears. 00:51:17.84\00:51:19.31 The Bible prophecy, rather, is looking at the big picture. 00:51:19.34\00:51:22.14 These are big-picture events that took place, and this is 00:51:22.18\00:51:26.08 what I think he's talking about. 00:51:26.11\00:51:27.85 Then we got to get to the last verse here because I want 00:51:27.88\00:51:29.58 to finish. 00:51:29.62\00:51:31.32 I know I went a minute over. 00:51:31.35\00:51:32.92 Daniel 12:13, "Go your way till the end of the days," till the 00:51:32.95\00:51:37.93 end, "for you will rest, and will arise to your inheritance," 00:51:37.96\00:51:42.76 and the word there, "your lot," you remember when Joshua divided 00:51:42.80\00:51:46.50 up the Promised Land? 00:51:46.53\00:51:48.94 It says, "He cast lots for them in Shiloh," Joshua 18:10, 00:51:48.97\00:51:51.77 "before the Lord. 00:51:51.81\00:51:53.71 He divided the land to the children of Israel." 00:51:53.74\00:51:55.48 That's the language that's used. 00:51:55.51\00:51:57.08 God is telling Daniel, says, "You are going to get your lot 00:51:57.11\00:51:59.21 in the Promised Land, you go rest." 00:51:59.25\00:52:01.05 What does "rest" mean? 00:52:01.08\00:52:02.42 "Many of them sleep in the dust of the earth." 00:52:02.45\00:52:03.99 "Daniel, you will sleep." 00:52:04.02\00:52:05.72 Now, not only does it mean Daniel will be resurrected and 00:52:05.75\00:52:07.42 he's going to get his eternal inheritance, but it means that, 00:52:07.46\00:52:10.06 in the end of these days, Daniel, his writings come 00:52:10.09\00:52:14.10 to life. 00:52:14.13\00:52:15.53 In 1843 and during that time period, there was great light 00:52:15.56\00:52:18.77 that was shed upon the writings of Daniel. 00:52:18.80\00:52:21.47 So there's a whole lot more I could say about this. 00:52:21.50\00:52:23.71 Hopefully, you found something edifying. 00:52:23.74\00:52:25.77 Sure enjoyed our study about--on the book of Daniel. 00:52:25.81\00:52:28.44 How about you? 00:52:28.48\00:52:30.21 And now we're going--don't forget. 00:54:03.37\00:54:10.65 Doug: You probably heard the expression before, "If you 00:54:10.68\00:54:12.51 don't like the weather in Texas, just wait. 00:54:12.55\00:54:15.05 It'll change." 00:54:15.08\00:54:16.45 And you've also heard, "Everything is bigger in Texas, 00:54:16.48\00:54:18.79 the ranches, the belt buckles, the cowboy hats," but the most 00:54:18.82\00:54:23.06 famous slogan about Texas is "Remember the Alamo." 00:54:23.09\00:54:27.86 ¤¤¤ 00:54:27.86\00:54:31.07 Doug: The violent battles and bravery of iconic heroes 00:54:31.10\00:54:33.44 have been the stuff of legends throughout which entire cultures 00:54:33.47\00:54:36.54 often draw their identity and pride, even long after centuries 00:54:36.57\00:54:39.97 have passed. 00:54:40.01\00:54:41.41 And in Texas, the story of the Alamo has been a rallying cry of 00:54:41.44\00:54:44.61 Texas independence for 200 years. 00:54:44.65\00:54:48.22 Doug: One reason that Texans love to brag that "Everything is 00:54:48.25\00:54:50.55 bigger in Texas," is, of course, because Texas is the largest of 00:54:50.59\00:54:54.02 the lower 48 U.S. states. 00:54:54.06\00:54:57.03 It's hard to believe that this massive state got its beginning 00:54:57.06\00:55:00.10 in a very small Christian mission during the Battle of 00:55:00.13\00:55:03.23 the Alamo. 00:55:03.26\00:55:05.10 Every year, this famous mission museum receives over two and a 00:55:05.13\00:55:08.34 half million visitors from all parts of the planet, that are 00:55:08.37\00:55:11.34 eager to get a good look at this legendary site. 00:55:11.37\00:55:14.94 The Alamo played a critical role in the Texas revolution. 00:55:14.98\00:55:18.65 In December 1835, Texans and Tejano volunteers battled 00:55:18.68\00:55:23.15 Mexican troops quartered in the city, forcing General Martin 00:55:23.18\00:55:26.32 Perfecto de Cos to surrender. 00:55:26.35\00:55:28.32 The victorious volunteers then occupied the Alamo and 00:55:28.36\00:55:31.33 strengthened its defenses. 00:55:31.36\00:55:33.63 Famous Americans like Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, and Colonel 00:55:33.66\00:55:37.10 William Travis, made this location, this ancient mission, 00:55:37.13\00:55:40.77 the beachhead, the last stand in an epic battle to win 00:55:40.80\00:55:44.74 independence of Texas from Mexico. 00:55:44.77\00:55:48.18 On February 23, 1836, the arrival of General Antonio Lopez 00:55:48.21\00:55:53.01 Santa Anna, nearly caught them by surprise. 00:55:53.05\00:55:56.69 Undaunted, the Texans and Tejanos prepared to defend 00:55:56.72\00:55:59.19 the Alamo. 00:55:59.22\00:56:00.66 For this small, ragtag group of rebels, the youngest of who was 00:56:00.69\00:56:03.59 about 16, and the oldest 75, was against a well-trained and 00:56:03.63\00:56:07.66 organized Mexican army of 6,000-plus soldiers. 00:56:07.66\00:56:11.43 It was a fierce and lopsided battle, yet the small force of 00:56:11.47\00:56:14.60 rebels was able to repel the troops for 13 days. 00:56:14.64\00:56:19.74 Legend holds that with the possibility of additional help 00:56:19.77\00:56:22.64 fading, Colonel Travis drew a line in the ground with a sword 00:56:22.68\00:56:25.95 and asked any man willing to stay and fight to step over 00:56:25.98\00:56:29.65 the line. 00:56:29.68\00:56:31.15 All except one crossed over. 00:56:31.19\00:56:33.92 The final assault came before daybreak. 00:56:33.96\00:56:36.19 On the morning of March 6, 1836, the 13th day of the siege, 00:56:36.22\00:56:40.60 cannon and small-arms fire, from inside the Alamo, beat back 00:56:40.63\00:56:45.13 several Mexican attacks. 00:56:45.17\00:56:46.97 Regrouping, Santa Anna's soldiers scaled the walls and 00:56:47.00\00:56:49.90 rushed into the compound. 00:56:49.94\00:56:52.21 The desperate struggle continued until the defenders 00:56:52.24\00:56:54.51 were overwhelmed. 00:56:54.54\00:56:56.44 By sunrise, the battle had ended, and the garrison 00:56:56.48\00:56:58.81 were slain. 00:56:58.85\00:57:00.92 Doug: You know, historians may debate some of the details 00:57:00.95\00:57:02.52 regarding the Battle of the Alamo, but none of them question 00:57:02.55\00:57:05.19 the incredible sacrifice that was made and the courage that 00:57:05.22\00:57:07.62 was displayed during that intense conflict. 00:57:07.66\00:57:10.96 They made the ultimate sacrifice, giving their lives, 00:57:10.99\00:57:14.03 and this is why the story of the Alamo is so inspiring and 00:57:14.10\00:57:16.60 so encouraging. 00:57:16.63\00:57:19.47 You know, and that's why the Bible is so inspiring, friends, 00:57:19.50\00:57:21.47 because someone was willing to make the ultimate sacrifice and 00:57:21.50\00:57:24.24 give His life so that you can have freedom and eternal life. 00:57:24.27\00:57:26.84 Don't you think you could trust your life to a friend like that, 00:57:26.88\00:57:31.05 that would give everything? 00:57:31.08\00:57:33.08 The story of the Gospel is a story of courage and hope. 00:57:33.11\00:57:35.85 It's a story of a God who will never leave you without defense 00:57:35.88\00:57:38.15 and support. 00:57:38.19\00:57:39.95 Jesus is the good news, and the Gospel is a story 00:57:39.99\00:57:43.12 worth remembering. 00:57:43.16\00:57:45.49 ¤¤¤ 00:57:45.53\00:57:50.30 ¤¤¤ 00:58:01.01\00:58:08.62
