00:06:08.73\00:06:10.83 Study Hour" here at the Granite Bay Church. 00:06:10.87\00:06:13.30 And as we mentioned in our introduction, 00:06:13.34\00:06:15.44 we're looking at Daniel chapter 8 is going to be the main focus 00:06:15.47\00:06:18.71 of our study this morning. 00:06:18.74\00:06:21.44 It's actually lesson number 9 in your lesson quarterly, 00:06:21.48\00:06:24.58 but it actually focuses on Daniel chapter 8, 00:06:24.61\00:06:27.12 very important study today. 00:06:27.15\00:06:29.35 But before we get to our study, let's just begin with a word 00:06:29.38\00:06:31.59 of prayer. 00:06:31.62\00:06:33.56 Dear Father, once again we are grateful that we have this 00:06:33.59\00:06:35.59 opportunity to gather together in your house and open your Word 00:06:35.62\00:06:37.59 and study a very important prophecy, 00:06:37.63\00:06:40.16 something that is in particular relevant for us and for the time 00:06:40.20\00:06:43.13 in which we are living. 00:06:43.16\00:06:45.40 We do ask that the Holy Spirit would come and guide our hearts 00:06:45.43\00:06:47.54 and our minds. 00:06:47.57\00:06:49.40 Help us to understand these very important prophetic truths, 00:06:49.44\00:06:51.84 for we ask this in Jesus's name, amen. 00:06:51.87\00:06:56.64 Well, we're looking at lesson number 9, 00:06:56.68\00:06:58.98 and it's entitled "From Contamination to Purification." 00:06:59.01\00:07:03.18 And we have a memory verse. 00:07:03.22\00:07:05.62 And if you have your lesson quarterlies or your Bibles, 00:07:05.65\00:07:07.86 you can turn to our memory text, it is Daniel chapter 8 and 00:07:07.89\00:07:12.46 verse 14. 00:07:12.49\00:07:14.46 It's a famous, well-known verse in Scripture, 00:07:14.50\00:07:17.37 especially to Adventists. 00:07:17.40\00:07:19.37 Daniel the 8th chapter and verse 14, it says, 00:07:19.40\00:07:22.84 "And he said unto me for 2,300 days, 00:07:22.87\00:07:26.68 'Then the sanctuary shall be cleansed.'" 00:07:26.71\00:07:30.98 Daniel 8, verse 14. 00:07:31.01\00:07:33.18 Now, we'll be getting to this cleansing of the sanctuary here 00:07:33.21\00:07:34.95 in just a few moments, but by way of an introduction as we 00:07:34.98\00:07:38.12 lead into to our study, we're going to be looking at Daniel 00:07:38.15\00:07:41.06 chapter 8. 00:07:41.09\00:07:42.86 Now, Daniel chapter 8 reveals the fact that there is an 00:07:42.89\00:07:46.93 attempt to undermine the work that Jesus does for us in the 00:07:46.96\00:07:51.97 heavenly sanctuary. 00:07:52.00\00:07:54.00 Now, the Bible makes it clear that Jesus is our high priest 00:07:54.04\00:07:57.27 ministering in the heavenly sanctuary, Hebrews chapter 8, 00:07:57.31\00:07:59.84 verse 1 and 2. 00:07:59.87\00:08:01.91 The Bible tells us that Jesus is the new and living way into the 00:08:01.94\00:08:05.21 presence of the Father, that's Hebrews chapter 10. 00:08:05.25\00:08:09.08 The Bible tells us that Jesus is the one mediator between God and 00:08:09.12\00:08:13.76 man, that's 1 Timothy 2, verse 5. 00:08:13.79\00:08:16.96 He's also the author and the finisher of our faith, 00:08:16.99\00:08:20.70 and you read about that in Hebrews 12. 00:08:20.73\00:08:23.10 And John 14:6, He's the only means of salvation. 00:08:23.13\00:08:27.07 So, the Bible makes it clear that Jesus is our High Priest. 00:08:27.10\00:08:30.91 He's our mediator, He's the one that represents us before 00:08:30.94\00:08:33.78 the Father. 00:08:33.81\00:08:35.61 Salvation comes in and through Christ. 00:08:35.64\00:08:37.81 But in Daniel chapter 8, we are introduced to an entity that 00:08:37.85\00:08:42.05 tries to usurp the position of Jesus as high priest 00:08:42.08\00:08:47.12 and mediator. 00:08:47.16\00:08:48.79 And that's really the focus of our study in Daniel chapter 8. 00:08:48.82\00:08:54.03 Now, Daniel chapter 8 is divided up into four parts. 00:08:54.10\00:08:58.40 The first, which is from verse 1 through to verse 12, 00:08:58.43\00:09:01.60 describes what Daniel saw in vision. 00:09:01.64\00:09:05.64 And then you've got verse 12 and 13 that tell you what Daniel 00:09:05.67\00:09:09.71 heard, and that's where our memory text came from in 00:09:09.74\00:09:12.35 verse 14. 00:09:12.38\00:09:14.48 Then in verse 15 through to verse 25, 00:09:14.52\00:09:17.05 you have the interpretation of the vision that Daniel had seen, 00:09:17.09\00:09:21.56 that's the angel Gabriel that comes to explain the meaning of 00:09:21.59\00:09:24.09 the symbols. 00:09:24.13\00:09:25.96 And then in verse 26 and 27, you've got the explanation or 00:09:25.99\00:09:30.33 the interpretation given by Gabriel interrupted. 00:09:30.37\00:09:35.20 And then, of course, you read about the last part of that in 00:09:35.24\00:09:38.11 Daniel chapter 9, when Gabriel comes back to give a clear 00:09:38.14\00:09:41.21 understanding of the 2,300 days. 00:09:41.24\00:09:44.45 So, we're not going to be getting into Daniel 9, 00:09:44.48\00:09:46.82 but we are going to be looking at Daniel chapter 8 00:09:46.85\00:09:48.92 this morning. 00:09:48.95\00:09:51.02 So, with that as the background, we're going to begin. 00:09:51.05\00:09:53.72 And if you have your Bibles, you can turn to it, 00:09:53.76\00:09:56.06 it's Daniel chapter 8, and we're going to start reading here in 00:09:56.09\00:09:58.99 verse 2. 00:09:59.03\00:10:01.16 Daniel chapter 8, verse 2, and this is what it says. 00:10:01.20\00:10:05.23 Daniel is describing what he sees in vision, 00:10:05.27\00:10:07.37 "I saw in vision, and it so happened while I was looking 00:10:07.40\00:10:10.84 that I was in Shushan." 00:10:10.87\00:10:12.97 Now, as you'll remember, Daniel was in Babylon, 00:10:13.01\00:10:15.48 but here it's nearing the end of the Babylonian reign, 00:10:15.51\00:10:19.51 and Medo-Persia is soon to conquer Babylon. 00:10:19.55\00:10:21.88 Shushan was about 230 miles east of the city of Babylon. 00:10:21.92\00:10:27.29 It served as the summer palace for some of the Babylonian kings 00:10:27.32\00:10:31.73 as well as the Persian kings that came later on. 00:10:31.76\00:10:34.56 So he says, "I was in Shushan, the citadel." 00:10:34.56\00:10:38.17 The word "citadel" is just fortified palace, 00:10:38.20\00:10:41.24 and that's where it was located. 00:10:41.27\00:10:42.94 "Which is in the province of Elam, 00:10:42.97\00:10:44.34 and I saw in the night visions that I was by the river Ulai." 00:10:44.37\00:10:49.58 Now, Ulai was an artificial canal that was connecting two 00:10:49.61\00:10:53.08 rivers, and it was used primarily for irrigation. 00:10:53.11\00:10:57.42 Now, where did the four living creatures that we studied 00:10:57.45\00:11:00.29 previously in Daniel chapter 7, where did they come from? 00:11:00.32\00:11:04.49 The four living creatures came from the--the four beasts came 00:11:04.53\00:11:06.56 from the sea, right? 00:11:06.59\00:11:10.43 And what does water represent in Bible prophecy? 00:11:10.47\00:11:13.57 People, multitudes, and nations. 00:11:13.60\00:11:15.54 It's interesting to note that what we read in Daniel chapter 8 00:11:15.57\00:11:18.67 also takes place close to water. 00:11:18.71\00:11:21.84 Daniel sees these visions and he's by the river. 00:11:21.88\00:11:26.58 In Daniel 7, these creatures come out of the sea. 00:11:26.61\00:11:29.45 So again, it represents multitudes and nations. 00:11:29.48\00:11:32.15 All right, looking then at verse 3, it says, 00:11:32.19\00:11:34.39 "Then I lifted up my eyes and I saw there standing beside the 00:11:34.42\00:11:37.03 river, there was a ram that had two horns." 00:11:37.06\00:11:41.06 Now, the ram with the two horns represents Medo-Persia, 00:11:41.10\00:11:44.07 as we'll find out in just a few moments. 00:11:44.10\00:11:45.97 Of course, animals in Bible prophecy represents kingdoms 00:11:46.00\00:11:49.77 or nations. 00:11:49.80\00:11:51.77 We have this ram, it's got two horns, 00:11:51.81\00:11:54.41 the two horns represent the two parts of the kingdom, 00:11:54.44\00:11:57.45 the Medes and the Persians. 00:11:57.48\00:11:59.88 It's also interesting to note that in Daniel chapter 7, 00:11:59.91\00:12:03.65 the animals that's described coming up from the sea are what 00:12:03.69\00:12:06.89 we would refer to as wild animals or unclean animals. 00:12:06.92\00:12:11.66 But the animals described in Daniel chapter 8 would be 00:12:11.69\00:12:15.30 considered clean animals. 00:12:15.33\00:12:17.57 You've got a ram, you've got a goat. 00:12:17.60\00:12:20.17 Now, rams and goats were very important to the sanctuary and 00:12:20.20\00:12:23.44 to the sacrificial system. 00:12:23.47\00:12:25.77 In Daniel chapter 7, you have a lion, an unclean animal, a bear, 00:12:25.81\00:12:30.28 a leopard, and then a dragon-like beast. 00:12:30.31\00:12:33.05 So, in Daniel chapter 8, the focus is on the sanctuary and on 00:12:33.08\00:12:37.92 something relating to the plan of redemption or the plan 00:12:37.95\00:12:40.92 of salvation. 00:12:40.96\00:12:42.42 You'll see that unfold as we go. 00:12:42.46\00:12:44.39 So, the imagery that we find in chapter 8 is sanctuary imagery, 00:12:44.43\00:12:48.00 sanctuary language. 00:12:48.03\00:12:49.33 Now, of course, our memory text in verse 14 of Daniel 8 talks 00:12:49.36\00:12:52.70 about the cleansing of the sanctuary. 00:12:52.73\00:12:54.64 So, you can see that, that, all of the images here are 00:12:54.67\00:12:57.41 connected together. 00:12:57.44\00:12:59.27 Okay, then it says that this ram had two horns and the larger 00:12:59.31\00:13:04.05 horn came up last. 00:13:04.08\00:13:05.98 This is the last part of verse 3. 00:13:06.01\00:13:08.68 Even though the Medes came before the Persians, 00:13:08.72\00:13:11.25 the Persians, which came up later, grew to dominance. 00:13:11.29\00:13:14.79 And so, that's the horn that is larger and comes up. 00:13:14.82\00:13:18.19 Then we look at verse 4, it says, 00:13:18.23\00:13:19.93 "I saw the ram pushing westward and northward and southward so 00:13:19.96\00:13:24.20 that no animal could stand before him." 00:13:24.23\00:13:26.74 This is a description of Medo-Persia. 00:13:26.77\00:13:29.14 It expanded from the east, it expanded to the west. 00:13:29.17\00:13:33.11 Cyrus, who was the general that led the conquest of Medo-Persia, 00:13:33.14\00:13:36.95 he conquered Babylon, he conquered Syria, in Asia Minor. 00:13:36.98\00:13:40.98 He pressed up towards the north to conquer Armenia all the way 00:13:41.02\00:13:45.19 up to the Caspian Sea region, and south all the way down to 00:13:45.22\00:13:49.09 Egypt and Ethiopia. 00:13:49.12\00:13:51.09 So, Medo-Persia comes from the east, 00:13:51.13\00:13:52.73 and it's moving towards the west, 00:13:52.76\00:13:54.73 and it's conquering this land. 00:13:54.76\00:13:56.36 And the middle of verse 4 says, "Nor was there any that could 00:13:56.40\00:13:59.87 deliver from his hand, but he did according to his will, 00:13:59.90\00:14:02.67 and he became great." 00:14:02.70\00:14:04.81 The Medo-Persian empire conquered and occupied more land 00:14:04.84\00:14:08.64 than Babylon. 00:14:08.68\00:14:10.11 So, notice you have Babylon followed by Medo-Persia, 00:14:10.15\00:14:12.81 Medo-Persia controls more land than Babylon, 00:14:12.85\00:14:15.38 but then Medo-Persia falls to Greece, 00:14:15.42\00:14:18.02 and Greece controls more land than Persia did. 00:14:18.05\00:14:21.32 And then Rome controls even more land and territory than Greece. 00:14:21.36\00:14:25.06 So, each time these kingdoms that arise, 00:14:25.09\00:14:27.66 they have more power and they control more territory, 00:14:27.66\00:14:31.63 and that's the pattern that we can see established. 00:14:31.67\00:14:33.90 Now, of course, we don't have to guess as to who this power is 00:14:33.94\00:14:38.71 because the angel Gabriel comes and explains the meaning of 00:14:38.74\00:14:41.48 the symbol. 00:14:41.51\00:14:43.21 And if you look in verse 20, Daniel chapter 8, verse 20, 00:14:43.24\00:14:45.85 the angel Gabriel comes and it's very clear as to who the ram is. 00:14:45.88\00:14:50.52 Verse 20 says, "The ram which you saw having the two horns are 00:14:50.55\00:14:54.02 the kings of Medo-Persia." 00:14:54.06\00:14:56.12 No question about that. 00:14:56.16\00:14:57.63 So, here we see a parallel beginning to develop between 00:14:57.66\00:15:00.80 what we looked at in Daniel 7 and what we've read in Daniel 00:15:00.83\00:15:04.27 chapter 2. 00:15:04.30\00:15:06.30 It's important for us to remember the context of these 00:15:06.33\00:15:08.44 visions in the book of Daniel. 00:15:08.47\00:15:10.37 Daniel chapter 2 is, you know, Nebuchadnezzar has a dream. 00:15:10.41\00:15:13.84 And in the dream, he sees this giant image made of these 00:15:13.88\00:15:16.54 different metals. 00:15:16.58\00:15:18.28 And each of these metals represent a different kingdom. 00:15:18.31\00:15:21.18 The head of gold in Daniel chapter 2 represents the kingdom 00:15:21.22\00:15:24.12 of Babylon. 00:15:24.15\00:15:25.89 The chest and arms of silver represent what kingdom? 00:15:25.92\00:15:29.12 Medo-Persia. 00:15:29.16\00:15:31.33 And then, of course, you've got the belly and the thighs of 00:15:31.36\00:15:32.83 brass, representing Greece; the legs of iron, representing Rome; 00:15:32.86\00:15:36.43 the feet of iron and clay representing Western Europe even 00:15:36.46\00:15:39.80 as we know it today. 00:15:39.83\00:15:41.37 And then the stone that comes and strikes the image upon 00:15:41.40\00:15:43.10 its feet. 00:15:43.14\00:15:44.91 Now, if you can just picture this giant image in Daniel 00:15:44.94\00:15:47.71 chapter 2, and then you parallel that to Daniel chapter 7, 00:15:47.74\00:15:52.08 you'll notice the kingdoms are described, 00:15:52.11\00:15:54.35 but using different symbols. 00:15:54.38\00:15:56.45 Instead of the head of gold that you find in Daniel chapter 2, 00:15:56.48\00:15:59.32 Babylon in Daniel 7 is represented as a lion that has 00:15:59.35\00:16:03.99 eagle's wings. 00:16:04.03\00:16:05.46 And we studied this last week. 00:16:05.49\00:16:07.60 Medo-Persia in Daniel 2 is the chest and the arms of silver. 00:16:07.60\00:16:11.13 In Daniel 7, it's represented as a bear that is raised up on one 00:16:11.17\00:16:15.90 side and he has three ribs in his mouth. 00:16:15.94\00:16:18.84 Now, we mentioned this last week, 00:16:18.87\00:16:20.44 the arms of the image of Daniel 2, there are two arms, 00:16:20.48\00:16:24.25 and there's two parts. 00:16:24.28\00:16:26.48 Medo-Persia consists of two parts, 00:16:26.51\00:16:29.25 the Medes and the Persians. 00:16:29.28\00:16:30.99 And just like the right arm is typically stronger than the 00:16:31.02\00:16:34.42 left, so the Persians were stronger than the Medes. 00:16:34.46\00:16:37.03 Thus the bear was raised up on the one side. 00:16:37.06\00:16:40.40 And then you've got the kingdom of Greece represented by the 00:16:40.43\00:16:43.03 belly and the thighs of brass in Daniel chapter 2. 00:16:43.06\00:16:46.00 And now, we find in Daniel chapter 7 that's the leopard 00:16:46.03\00:16:49.34 with four heads and four wings. 00:16:49.37\00:16:52.31 Rome are the legs of iron in Daniel 2. 00:16:52.34\00:16:55.84 In Daniel 7, it is a nondescript beast that has ten horns, 00:16:55.88\00:17:01.52 and a little horn that comes up, and he has iron teeth. 00:17:01.55\00:17:04.99 So, you can see the parallel here. 00:17:05.02\00:17:06.79 Now, Daniel chapter 8, nothing is said about Babylon because 00:17:06.82\00:17:10.49 Babylon was at the point of being conquered by Medo-Persia 00:17:10.53\00:17:13.76 when the vision was given to Daniel in Daniel chapter 8. 00:17:13.80\00:17:16.90 So, the vision begins in Daniel 8, not with Babylon, 00:17:16.93\00:17:20.97 but with Medo-Persia. 00:17:21.00\00:17:22.60 So, this ram with two horns the angel tells us is Medo-Persia. 00:17:22.64\00:17:27.41 Well, what power conquered Medo-Persia? 00:17:27.44\00:17:30.51 Well, we know it was the power of Greece. 00:17:30.55\00:17:33.45 The Greeks conquered the Medes. 00:17:33.48\00:17:35.32 And so, we find here in verse 5, it introduces us to another 00:17:35.35\00:17:38.95 symbol, and it is the he goat. 00:17:38.99\00:17:41.66 Daniel chapter 8 beginning then in verse 5, it says, 00:17:41.69\00:17:45.79 "And as I was considering, suddenly a male goat," 00:17:45.83\00:17:49.53 that would be the kingdom of Greece, "came from the west." 00:17:49.56\00:17:53.77 So, if you think of the map of the Mediterranean, 00:17:53.80\00:17:56.57 Medo-Persia came from the east conquering towards the west, 00:17:56.60\00:18:01.41 but Greece would be to the west conquering to the east. 00:18:01.44\00:18:06.72 So, this power came from the west, this is Greece. 00:18:06.75\00:18:09.95 And it says, "It came across from the west across the surface 00:18:09.98\00:18:13.72 of the whole earth without touching the ground," 00:18:13.76\00:18:16.93 representing the speed with which Alexander the 00:18:16.96\00:18:19.89 Great conquered. 00:18:19.93\00:18:21.40 It says, "The goat had a notable horn between its eyes." 00:18:21.43\00:18:25.87 Now, the Bible tells us what this notable horn is, 00:18:25.90\00:18:28.57 it says it's the first king, and we know that from history as 00:18:28.60\00:18:30.97 being Alexander the Great, he was a great military prodigy. 00:18:31.01\00:18:34.81 He was able to understand and come up with some great 00:18:34.84\00:18:37.81 military strategies. 00:18:37.85\00:18:39.81 So, this notable horn is Alexander the Great. 00:18:39.85\00:18:42.08 He launched his first attack against Persia in 334 BC. 00:18:42.12\00:18:47.56 And in essence, by 330, just four years later, 00:18:47.59\00:18:50.73 he had pretty much fully conquered the Persian Empire. 00:18:50.76\00:18:55.63 Verse 6 says, "Then he came to the ram that had the two horns, 00:18:55.66\00:19:00.04 which I'd seen standing before the river, 00:19:00.07\00:19:01.97 and ran at him with fury and power." 00:19:02.00\00:19:06.01 So, here he's referencing the power and the conquest of 00:19:06.04\00:19:10.01 the Greeks. 00:19:10.05\00:19:11.91 Verse 7 says, "And I saw him confronting the ram, 00:19:11.95\00:19:14.32 and he was moved with rage against him, 00:19:14.35\00:19:16.82 and attacked the ram and broke his two horns. 00:19:16.85\00:19:19.95 And there was no power in the ram to withstand him, 00:19:19.99\00:19:22.36 but he cast him down to the ground and trampled upon him, 00:19:22.39\00:19:25.53 and there was no one that could deliver out of his hand." 00:19:25.56\00:19:28.96 So again, this is a reference to the Greeks and Alexander 00:19:29.00\00:19:31.90 the Great. 00:19:31.93\00:19:33.50 Probably one of the more decisive battles that occurred 00:19:33.54\00:19:36.00 took place in 331, October the 1st, 331, 00:19:36.04\00:19:40.98 known as the Battle of Arbela. 00:19:41.01\00:19:43.55 The Persians had gathered together sort of their last 00:19:43.58\00:19:45.91 stand against Alexander and his forces. 00:19:45.95\00:19:49.05 They had about 200,000 soldiers in the Persian army. 00:19:49.08\00:19:53.96 In addition to the footmen, they had their horses, 00:19:53.99\00:19:56.86 and they had chariots, they even had elephants that were prepared 00:19:56.89\00:20:01.16 for battle. 00:20:01.20\00:20:02.60 And they would take these elephants into war. 00:20:02.63\00:20:04.87 So, 200,000 soldiers is what was on the side of the Persians, 00:20:04.90\00:20:08.44 Alexander the Great had, well, about, let me see, 00:20:08.47\00:20:12.91 he had a total of 47,000 men. 00:20:12.94\00:20:16.18 So, 200,000 Persians and 47,000 Greeks. 00:20:16.21\00:20:21.55 Well, in the battle, these were all footmen, 00:20:21.58\00:20:24.39 Alexander didn't have horses or chariots. 00:20:24.42\00:20:26.62 But based on his military ability to figure out battles 00:20:26.65\00:20:31.16 and his strategy and the speed with which his men could move, 00:20:31.19\00:20:34.60 at the end of the battle, which of course the Greeks won, 00:20:34.63\00:20:37.97 the Persians had lost 50,000 men in the battle 00:20:38.00\00:20:42.27 and the Greeks had lost 500. 00:20:42.30\00:20:45.07 And that was the deciding battle, 00:20:45.11\00:20:46.94 which really gave the upper hand to Alexander the Great. 00:20:46.98\00:20:50.18 And of course, the Greeks conquered Medo-Persia. 00:20:50.21\00:20:53.21 Now, as to the identity of this he goat, 00:20:53.25\00:20:55.95 the Bible tells us clearly in verse 21, Daniel chapter 8, 00:20:55.98\00:20:59.59 verse 21, it says, "And the male goat is the kingdom of Greece, 00:20:59.62\00:21:03.73 and the large horn that is between his eyes is the 00:21:03.76\00:21:05.96 first king." 00:21:05.99\00:21:07.86 So, no question as to who this goat represents, 00:21:07.86\00:21:09.96 it represents Greece, and the big horn between its eyes is 00:21:10.00\00:21:13.44 Alexander the Great. 00:21:13.47\00:21:15.44 Now, we come to the next symbol that we find, 00:21:15.47\00:21:17.41 and that's these four horns that we read about, 00:21:17.44\00:21:20.58 starting in verse 8. 00:21:20.61\00:21:22.41 If you have your Bibles and following along, 00:21:22.44\00:21:24.91 we're looking in Daniel chapter 8, beginning in verse 8. 00:21:24.95\00:21:27.55 And it says, "Therefore, the male goat grew very great. 00:21:27.58\00:21:31.02 But when he had become strong, the large horn was broken." 00:21:31.05\00:21:35.62 This prophecy indicates that Alexander the Great, 00:21:35.66\00:21:38.63 that he would fall while his empire was at the height of 00:21:38.66\00:21:41.76 its power. 00:21:41.80\00:21:43.83 And this is, of course, exactly what happened. 00:21:43.87\00:21:45.27 At the age of 32 while back at Babylon, 00:21:45.30\00:21:48.17 Alexander the Great fell ill, some think it's the result of a 00:21:48.20\00:21:51.87 drinking spree that he had gone on, 00:21:51.91\00:21:53.98 a fever that he had picked up, and he died at the age of 32. 00:21:54.01\00:22:00.38 His kingdom then was divided up amongst his four generals. 00:22:00.42\00:22:03.99 And you notice the rest of the verse there, it says, 00:22:04.02\00:22:06.32 "And in the place of it, that is this notable horn," 00:22:06.35\00:22:09.02 Alexander the Great, "four notable ones came up towards the 00:22:09.06\00:22:12.86 four winds of heaven." 00:22:12.89\00:22:15.56 So, when Alexander the Great died, 00:22:15.60\00:22:17.13 his kingdom was divided up amongst his four generals. 00:22:17.17\00:22:20.50 And you have Ptolemy, one of the generals, 00:22:20.54\00:22:23.07 who took control of Egypt and Palestine. 00:22:23.10\00:22:26.41 Cassander took control of Macedonia, 00:22:26.44\00:22:29.21 Lysimachus took over Turkey and a large part of Asia Minor, 00:22:29.24\00:22:33.58 and Seleucus had the northern Syria, 00:22:33.62\00:22:36.32 Mesopotamian eastern part of the empire. 00:22:36.35\00:22:39.82 Thus the kingdom of Greece was divided into four, 00:22:39.85\00:22:42.76 just as the prophecy says. 00:22:42.79\00:22:45.29 Now, as to the meaning of these symbols, 00:22:45.33\00:22:47.40 again we don't have to guess, the angel Gabriel gives 00:22:47.46\00:22:50.07 the explanation. 00:22:50.10\00:22:51.43 And you'll find in verse 22, Daniel chapter 8, verse 22, 00:22:51.47\00:22:54.54 the angel says, "As for the broken horn and the four that 00:22:54.57\00:22:58.34 stood up in its place, four kingdoms shall arise out of this 00:22:58.37\00:23:01.88 nation, but not in its power." 00:23:01.91\00:23:05.31 And so, when Alexander the Great died, his kingdom is divided up. 00:23:05.35\00:23:08.75 Now, we get to a very interesting symbol, 00:23:08.78\00:23:11.82 it's the little horn power that we read about now in Daniel 00:23:11.85\00:23:14.96 chapter 8. 00:23:14.99\00:23:16.79 And this starts in verse 9. 00:23:16.83\00:23:18.33 So, what does it say about this little horn power? 00:23:18.36\00:23:20.50 And most of what this chapter talks about is the little 00:23:20.53\00:23:24.03 horn power. 00:23:24.07\00:23:25.50 So, we begin in verse 9, it says, "And out of one of them." 00:23:25.53\00:23:29.30 Now, I want to just spend a few moments on this, 00:23:29.34\00:23:31.34 there is some confusion as to who the them is in this verse. 00:23:31.37\00:23:36.78 Is it referring to the four winds, 00:23:36.81\00:23:39.58 or is it referring to the four horns? 00:23:39.61\00:23:42.15 Now remember, the kingdom was divided up into four parts, 00:23:42.18\00:23:45.62 but it says, "Out of one of them," 00:23:45.65\00:23:47.89 talking about the four points of the compass, the four winds. 00:23:47.92\00:23:51.29 Let me back up just to make sure you understand. 00:23:51.33\00:23:53.50 If you notice over here where it says in verse 8, 00:23:53.53\00:23:58.50 it says four notable, this is the end of verse 8, 00:23:58.53\00:24:02.10 "And in its place, there were four notable horns that came up 00:24:02.14\00:24:05.27 towards the four winds of heaven." 00:24:05.31\00:24:08.81 So, you have four horns and you have four winds. 00:24:08.84\00:24:12.01 Then it says, "And out of one of them arose a little horn." 00:24:12.05\00:24:16.42 So, the question is, is it referring to the four horns or 00:24:16.45\00:24:19.22 is it referring to the four winds? 00:24:19.25\00:24:20.66 Why is that important? 00:24:20.69\00:24:22.16 Well, because the next power that we're going to be looking 00:24:22.19\00:24:23.93 at, the little horn power, represents the kingdom of Rome. 00:24:23.96\00:24:26.73 Rome did not really grow out of one of the four divisions of the 00:24:26.76\00:24:31.30 Grecian empire. 00:24:31.33\00:24:32.67 Rome, of course, came way over from the west and it conquered 00:24:32.70\00:24:36.04 towards the east. 00:24:36.07\00:24:37.44 So, it's brought some confusion. 00:24:37.47\00:24:39.31 Actually, some people have come up with some interesting views 00:24:39.34\00:24:41.61 as to try and identify who this little horn power is. 00:24:41.64\00:24:44.85 But if you look at the actual Hebrew in which this passage was 00:24:44.88\00:24:48.12 written, the different Hebrew words are either masculine or 00:24:48.15\00:24:52.52 feminine, or in a neuter form. 00:24:52.55\00:24:55.42 And when it's talking about these four them that we find in 00:24:55.46\00:24:59.09 verse 9, it's actually given in the masculine form. 00:24:59.13\00:25:03.80 Now, horns are always given in the feminine form, 00:25:03.83\00:25:07.77 winds are always given in the masculine form. 00:25:07.80\00:25:10.77 Horns can also sometimes be used in the feminine form, 00:25:10.81\00:25:13.07 but--or winds can be either, but horns are always in the 00:25:13.11\00:25:16.64 feminine form. 00:25:16.68\00:25:18.21 So, when it says them, it's in the masculine form, 00:25:18.25\00:25:21.58 it's relating to the winds and not the horns just from the 00:25:21.62\00:25:25.69 grammatical study of the text itself. 00:25:25.72\00:25:28.22 So, when he says, "From one of them arose a little horn," 00:25:28.26\00:25:31.49 the them there is not the four horns, 00:25:31.53\00:25:33.76 but from one of the four points of the compass, 00:25:33.80\00:25:36.10 one of the four winds. 00:25:36.13\00:25:38.13 Now, with that, it makes perfect sense when we talk about Rome 00:25:38.17\00:25:42.10 coming up because Rome didn't really arise from one of the 00:25:42.14\00:25:45.44 four horns, but it did arise from one of the four points of 00:25:45.47\00:25:47.61 the compass. 00:25:47.64\00:25:49.18 It actually came from the west and then moved to the east. 00:25:49.21\00:25:51.88 And you'll see why that's important here in just a 00:25:51.91\00:25:54.02 few minutes. 00:25:54.05\00:25:55.52 We're going to be talking about Antiochus Epiphanes and some of 00:25:55.55\00:25:57.55 the misunderstanding about that. 00:25:57.59\00:26:00.12 So it says, "From one of them," that would be one of the four 00:26:00.16\00:26:02.26 points of the compass, "came a little horn, 00:26:02.29\00:26:05.26 which grew exceedingly great towards the south, 00:26:05.29\00:26:08.03 towards the east, and towards the glorious land." 00:26:08.06\00:26:12.07 So, if you're picturing in your mind the Mediterranean and Rome, 00:26:12.10\00:26:16.40 which came up in Italy, it did grow towards the west, 00:26:16.44\00:26:21.41 or it came from the west, but it expanded towards the east, 00:26:21.44\00:26:24.28 towards the south, that would be Egypt, 00:26:24.31\00:26:26.61 and towards the pleasant land, that would be Palestine 00:26:26.65\00:26:30.05 or Israel. 00:26:30.09\00:26:31.75 And that's exactly what happened, 00:26:31.79\00:26:33.36 Rome did expand in that direction. 00:26:33.39\00:26:35.52 And then verse 10 says, "And it grew up to the host of heaven." 00:26:35.56\00:26:39.23 And verse 24 calls it the mighty and the holy people. 00:26:39.26\00:26:42.13 "And it cast down some of the hosts and some of the stars to 00:26:42.16\00:26:45.87 the ground, and trampled upon them." 00:26:45.90\00:26:48.30 This, of course, is a reference to the persecution that came 00:26:48.34\00:26:50.71 against the Jews by the Romans, and even to some degree speaks 00:26:50.74\00:26:54.94 of the persecution that came against Christ. 00:26:54.98\00:26:57.65 Remember Jesus was crucified on a Roman cross, 00:26:57.68\00:27:00.55 and that's what's brought to view here a little later 00:27:00.58\00:27:02.55 as well. 00:27:02.58\00:27:04.22 Verse 11 says, "He even exalted himself to the Prince of 00:27:04.25\00:27:06.69 the Host." 00:27:06.72\00:27:08.52 Now, who do you suppose the Prince of the Host would be? 00:27:08.56\00:27:11.43 That would be Jesus. 00:27:11.46\00:27:12.99 And it says, "By him the daily sacrifice was taken away and the 00:27:13.03\00:27:16.80 place of his sanctuary was cast down." 00:27:16.83\00:27:20.44 Now, when we're talking about Rome, 00:27:20.47\00:27:22.04 we're talking about this little horn power, 00:27:22.07\00:27:23.44 we're describing Rome both in its pagan phase and also in its 00:27:23.47\00:27:27.48 papal phase. 00:27:27.51\00:27:29.14 Remember Medo-Persia, it had two arms in Daniel chapter 2, 00:27:29.18\00:27:32.91 representing the Medes and the Persians? 00:27:32.95\00:27:34.85 And the legs in Daniel 2, there were two legs representing pagan 00:27:34.88\00:27:39.15 Rome and papal Rome. 00:27:39.19\00:27:41.12 The little horn power in Daniel chapter 8 describes both pagan 00:27:41.16\00:27:45.16 Rome and what pagan Rome would do, 00:27:45.19\00:27:47.60 as well as what papal Rome would do because papal Rome is really 00:27:47.60\00:27:50.87 an extension of pagan Rome. 00:27:50.90\00:27:53.07 So, when it talks about raising himself against the Prince of 00:27:53.10\00:27:55.74 the Hosts, it's talking not only about pagan Rome persecuting and 00:27:55.77\00:27:59.61 crucifying Christ, but it's also talking about something that 00:27:59.64\00:28:02.38 papal Rome would do as time goes on. 00:28:02.41\00:28:05.31 And we'll see how that comes together in just a minute. 00:28:05.35\00:28:08.08 Okay, verse 12, Daniel chapter 8, verse 12, it says, 00:28:08.12\00:28:10.72 "Because of transgression, an army was given over to the horn 00:28:10.75\00:28:13.86 to oppose the daily sacrifices. 00:28:13.89\00:28:16.16 And he cast the truth to the ground, 00:28:16.19\00:28:18.49 and he did all of this and prospered." 00:28:18.53\00:28:21.16 Now, verse 12 is referring to the papal power more than the 00:28:21.20\00:28:24.73 pagan power. 00:28:24.77\00:28:26.33 And we'll explain what the daily sacrifices is and how it was 00:28:26.37\00:28:29.00 cast down to the ground here in just a minute. 00:28:29.04\00:28:31.24 Now, as an explanation of this little horn power, 00:28:31.27\00:28:34.18 if we go to verse 23 of the same chapter, Daniel chapter 8, 00:28:34.21\00:28:38.01 verse 23, this is what the angel says. 00:28:38.05\00:28:40.98 He says, "In the latter time of their kingdom," 00:28:41.02\00:28:43.15 that is the division of the four parts of the Grecian 00:28:43.18\00:28:46.25 empire, "when transgression has reached their fullness, 00:28:46.29\00:28:49.92 a king shall arise having fierce features, 00:28:49.96\00:28:52.53 who's understanding sinister schemes." 00:28:52.56\00:28:55.70 Verse 24, "His power shall be mighty, 00:28:55.73\00:28:57.93 but not by his own power. 00:28:57.97\00:28:59.73 He shall destroy fearfully, and shall prosper and thrive. 00:28:59.77\00:29:04.11 He shall destroy the mighty and also the holy people." 00:29:04.14\00:29:08.08 Verse 25 says, "Through his cunning, 00:29:08.11\00:29:10.28 he shall cause the seed to prosper under his rule, 00:29:10.31\00:29:13.11 and he shall exalt himself in his heart. 00:29:13.15\00:29:16.22 He shall destroy many in their prosperity. 00:29:16.25\00:29:19.22 He shall even rise against the Prince of Princes, 00:29:19.25\00:29:21.99 but he shall be broken without human means." 00:29:22.02\00:29:26.33 So, who then is this little horn power? 00:29:26.36\00:29:28.76 I've mentioned it, it's referring to Rome both in its 00:29:28.80\00:29:31.57 pagan form as well as its papal form. 00:29:31.60\00:29:34.64 Now, I'd like to look at some characteristics that we find of 00:29:34.67\00:29:37.77 this little horn power, and maybe they could put this on the 00:29:37.81\00:29:40.01 screen for us, identifying marks of the little horn power of 00:29:40.04\00:29:43.24 Daniel chapter 8. 00:29:43.28\00:29:45.05 First of all, in verse 9, it says, 00:29:45.08\00:29:46.75 "It grew exceedingly great." 00:29:46.78\00:29:49.55 So this power, Rome, would be greater than Greece, 00:29:49.58\00:29:52.12 greater than Medo-Persia, and greater than Babylon. 00:29:52.15\00:29:54.72 And of course, that refers to Rome. 00:29:54.76\00:29:56.56 Point number two, it would rise towards the south, the east, 00:29:56.59\00:29:59.76 and the glorious land. 00:29:59.79\00:30:01.66 Rome arose in the west and conquered south and east. 00:30:01.70\00:30:05.20 It had fierce features. 00:30:05.23\00:30:07.74 Rome was fierce and war-like. 00:30:07.77\00:30:11.27 It exalted himself in his heart. 00:30:11.31\00:30:14.08 Rome was proud and arrogant. 00:30:14.11\00:30:15.78 Now, this is not only referring to the Roman emperors, 00:30:15.81\00:30:17.71 but as we see, it also refers to the papal power and the popes 00:30:17.75\00:30:21.02 during the 1260 years of papal supremacy. 00:30:21.05\00:30:25.39 Verse 5 says, "He shall destroy the mighty and the holy people," 00:30:25.42\00:30:28.59 that's verse 24. 00:30:28.62\00:30:30.79 Rome is a persecuting power of God's true people. 00:30:30.83\00:30:34.36 Again, that's referring to pagan Rome and the papacy. 00:30:34.40\00:30:37.30 Verse 11 says, "He shall exalt himself as high as the Prince of 00:30:37.33\00:30:40.94 the Host." 00:30:40.97\00:30:42.74 This is clearly a reference to the papal power. 00:30:42.77\00:30:45.41 "And it will cast down Christ's truth and the sanctuary," 00:30:45.44\00:30:49.11 that's verse 11 and 12. 00:30:49.14\00:30:51.01 That would pervert the truth of the sanctuary and the high 00:30:51.05\00:30:54.02 priestly ministry of Jesus, and that's what we find happened 00:30:54.05\00:30:57.09 during the time of papal supremacy. 00:30:57.12\00:30:59.85 Point number 8, "By him the daily sacrifice was taken away," 00:30:59.89\00:31:03.22 and that's verse 11. 00:31:03.26\00:31:04.93 Took away the original gospel provisions that we find in 00:31:04.96\00:31:09.43 Scripture, and that again is the papal power. 00:31:09.46\00:31:11.93 "Practiced and prospered till the time of the end." 00:31:11.97\00:31:14.64 This power would continue right up till the last days, 00:31:14.67\00:31:18.11 longer than any other power in history. 00:31:18.14\00:31:21.28 We know that the papacy ruled from 538 till 1798, 00:31:21.31\00:31:25.05 1260 years of supremacy, which is much longer than any of the 00:31:25.08\00:31:29.58 other kingdoms or powers that we have described in Daniel 2, 00:31:29.62\00:31:33.46 Daniel 7, and Daniel chapter 8. 00:31:33.49\00:31:36.42 Now, one of the questions that people have when talking about 00:31:36.46\00:31:39.13 this little horn power, they ask, "Well, 00:31:39.16\00:31:42.63 could this little horn represent Antiochus Epiphanes?" 00:31:42.66\00:31:46.37 Let me explain a little bit about who Antiochus 00:31:46.40\00:31:48.97 Epiphanes is. 00:31:49.00\00:31:50.91 If you look at the verse, it says, 00:31:50.94\00:31:53.24 "Out of one of them arise a little power, a king," 00:31:53.27\00:31:57.08 and the them is the horns. 00:31:57.11\00:31:59.68 People began to look around the divisions of the Grecian empire 00:31:59.71\00:32:02.65 after Alexander the Great died, and they looked for a king or a 00:32:02.68\00:32:05.99 power that would arise from one of those four divisions. 00:32:06.02\00:32:09.19 And they tried to identify that power as the little horn, 00:32:09.22\00:32:12.83 thus moving the focus away from pagan Rome and even moving away 00:32:12.86\00:32:17.30 from the papal power. 00:32:17.33\00:32:19.27 And one of the suggestions that has been made is, well, 00:32:19.30\00:32:21.50 this little horn power, could it be Antiochus Epiphanes? 00:32:21.54\00:32:24.87 Now, he was a king that did arise from one of the four 00:32:24.91\00:32:27.61 divisions of the Grecian empire, but he does not fit into 00:32:27.64\00:32:32.21 the prophecy. 00:32:32.25\00:32:34.38 And we'll see here a few points on the screen. 00:32:34.42\00:32:36.05 First of all, Antiochus Epiphanes did not become 00:32:36.08\00:32:38.92 exceedingly great as the prophecy says he would have 00:32:38.95\00:32:42.36 to be. 00:32:42.39\00:32:43.83 Matter of fact, there's not much said about Antiochus Epiphanes. 00:32:43.86\00:32:47.00 Alexander the Great is far greater than he. 00:32:47.03\00:32:50.23 And of course, you have the various other powers like 00:32:50.27\00:32:53.34 Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, much greater than Antiochus 00:32:53.37\00:32:56.24 Epiphanes. 00:32:56.27\00:32:57.64 So no, he did not become exceedingly great. 00:32:57.67\00:32:59.54 Number two says he did not rule in the latter time, 00:32:59.57\00:33:02.74 nor the end of the Seleucid kingdom as the 00:33:02.78\00:33:05.58 prophecy requires. 00:33:05.61\00:33:07.58 Verse 23 says, "He shall rule till the latter time." 00:33:07.62\00:33:11.05 This king obviously did not rule even to the end of the Grecian 00:33:11.09\00:33:15.19 empire, nor does he have any reference to today. 00:33:15.22\00:33:19.03 Number three, those who teach that Antiochus Epiphanes is the 00:33:19.06\00:33:22.10 little horn power take the 2,300 days literal instead 00:33:22.13\00:33:26.00 of prophetic. 00:33:26.03\00:33:28.00 It says of 2,300 days in verse 14, 00:33:28.04\00:33:31.01 then shall the sanctuary be cleansed. 00:33:31.04\00:33:33.17 So, if they're going to apply this to this king, they say, 00:33:33.21\00:33:35.58 "Well, you've got to take this time period literal, 00:33:35.61\00:33:38.28 not prophetic." 00:33:38.31\00:33:39.75 But even in taking it literal, it doesn't fit 00:33:39.78\00:33:41.85 with Antiochus Epiphanes. 00:33:41.88\00:33:43.85 If taken literally, it would be about six years. 00:33:43.89\00:33:46.82 Antiochus Epiphanes was not born until 215 BC, 00:33:46.86\00:33:50.29 some 242 years later, so he doesn't even fit with the 2300 00:33:50.33\00:33:56.10 year time period. 00:33:56.13\00:33:58.47 Verse 4 or point number four says the little horns still 00:33:58.50\00:34:01.60 exists at the time of the end. 00:34:01.64\00:34:03.77 And of course, Antiochus died in 164 BC. 00:34:03.81\00:34:08.34 It does not exist till the end of time. 00:34:08.38\00:34:10.08 The little horn was to become exceedingly great in the 00:34:10.11\00:34:12.51 southeast and in Palestine, according to verse 9. 00:34:12.55\00:34:16.08 Although Antiochus Epiphanes did rule Palestine for a while, 00:34:16.12\00:34:19.42 he did not rule in Egypt, which is to the south, 00:34:19.45\00:34:22.46 nor in Macedonia, which is to the east. 00:34:22.49\00:34:26.93 The next point says, "The little horn throws down the place of 00:34:26.96\00:34:30.03 God's sanctuary," according to verse 11. 00:34:30.07\00:34:33.57 Antiochus Epiphanes did not destroy the temple in Jerusalem, 00:34:33.60\00:34:36.67 he did profane it. 00:34:36.71\00:34:38.74 Apparently, there was a rebellion amongst the Jews, 00:34:38.77\00:34:41.11 and he marched into the temple in Jerusalem and he offered a 00:34:41.14\00:34:43.85 pig on the altar, so he definitely profaned the temple 00:34:43.88\00:34:49.18 and made many of the Jews upset. 00:34:49.22\00:34:51.19 But he did not destroy Jerusalem, 00:34:51.22\00:34:53.15 nor did he cast down the sanctuary, the temple. 00:34:53.19\00:34:56.12 That, of course, did not happen until 70 AD by the Romans, 00:34:56.16\00:35:00.10 who finally destroyed the temple as well as the city 00:35:00.13\00:35:03.16 of Jerusalem. 00:35:03.20\00:35:06.20 Point number seven, Christ applies the abominations of 00:35:06.23\00:35:09.57 desolation, which we read about in Daniel 9, 00:35:09.60\00:35:13.01 to the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. 00:35:13.04\00:35:17.01 This is a rather important point. 00:35:17.05\00:35:19.55 And maybe if you have your Bibles, you can just turn to it. 00:35:19.58\00:35:22.72 Matthew chapter 24, this is this famous passage where Jesus is 00:35:22.75\00:35:26.72 talking to the disciples, and he refers to the abomination of 00:35:26.76\00:35:30.46 desolation spoken of by Daniel the prophet. 00:35:30.49\00:35:33.23 And it's important for us to understand this because there 00:35:33.26\00:35:34.93 are a number of modern interpretations of Daniel 00:35:34.93\00:35:38.17 chapter 8, and they apply the abominations of desolation to 00:35:38.20\00:35:41.44 Antiochus Epiphanes, who sacrificed the pig on the altar. 00:35:41.47\00:35:45.37 But this is not what Jesus did. 00:35:45.41\00:35:47.31 Jesus applies the abomination of desolation not to a historical 00:35:47.34\00:35:52.21 occurrence, but rather to something that was to be in the 00:35:52.25\00:35:54.95 future from his time. 00:35:54.98\00:35:57.19 And here you find in Matthew chapter 24, 00:35:57.22\00:36:00.46 this is when the disciples came and asked Jesus, 00:36:00.49\00:36:02.36 "When shall these things be, when will Jerusalem be 00:36:02.39\00:36:04.33 destroyed, and what are the signs of Your second coming?" 00:36:04.36\00:36:08.03 And Jesus responds in verse 15, and He says, "Therefore, 00:36:08.06\00:36:11.17 when you see," this is Matthew 24:15, 00:36:11.20\00:36:13.87 "when you see the abomination of desolation," there it is, 00:36:13.90\00:36:17.41 "spoken of by Daniel the prophet, 00:36:17.44\00:36:20.41 'Stand in the holy place. 00:36:20.44\00:36:22.64 Whoever reads, let him understand. 00:36:22.68\00:36:24.45 Then let those who are in Judea flee into the mountains.'" 00:36:24.48\00:36:29.28 So, is Jesus talking about the abomination of desolation as a 00:36:29.32\00:36:32.19 historical event that already occurred before His time? 00:36:32.22\00:36:36.29 Or does Jesus still put it in the future? 00:36:36.32\00:36:39.33 He puts it in the future. 00:36:39.36\00:36:41.33 He says, "When you see the abomination of desolation stand 00:36:41.36\00:36:43.37 in the holy place." 00:36:43.40\00:36:45.23 Jesus can't be referring to Antiochus Epiphanes, 00:36:45.27\00:36:47.00 who died 100 years before Christ. 00:36:47.04\00:36:50.34 He must be referring to a future event. 00:36:50.37\00:36:52.71 Now, verse 16 says, "Let them that--let them or those that be 00:36:52.74\00:36:56.71 in Judea flee to the mountains." 00:36:56.75\00:36:59.61 Now, you want to keep that in mind and take a look at another 00:36:59.65\00:37:02.65 verse where Jesus is talking about the same event in Luke 00:37:02.68\00:37:06.49 chapter 21. 00:37:06.52\00:37:08.09 So, turn in your Bibles to Luke chapter 21 and we're going to 00:37:08.12\00:37:10.13 look here at verse 20. 00:37:10.16\00:37:12.96 Jesus says when you see the abomination of desolation 00:37:12.99\00:37:15.93 stand in the holy place, then flee to the mountains. 00:37:15.96\00:37:19.23 Now, he words it differently in Luke chapter 21, verse 20. 00:37:19.27\00:37:24.97 Starting in verse 20, we'll read through to verse 22. 00:37:25.01\00:37:28.61 Luke chapter 21, starting in verse 20, Jesus says, 00:37:28.64\00:37:31.88 "But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, 00:37:31.91\00:37:35.98 then know that its desolation is near." 00:37:36.02\00:37:38.92 Notice the word there desolation, 00:37:38.95\00:37:40.99 paralleling with Matthew 24, the abomination of desolation? 00:37:41.02\00:37:44.23 Verse 21, "Then let those who be in Judea flee to the mountains, 00:37:44.26\00:37:47.50 let those who are in the midst of her depart, 00:37:47.50\00:37:49.86 and let those who are in the country enter her--or not 00:37:49.90\00:37:53.94 enter her." 00:37:53.97\00:37:55.84 Verse 22, "For these are the days of vengeance, 00:37:55.87\00:37:58.44 that all things which are written may be fulfilled." 00:37:58.47\00:38:02.81 Now, in Matthew 24, Jesus says it's something 00:38:02.84\00:38:05.15 that Daniel wrote. 00:38:05.18\00:38:07.25 And when he says, "When you see this abomination of desolation, 00:38:07.28\00:38:09.75 flee to the mountains," clearly here Jesus is not talking about 00:38:09.78\00:38:12.29 a historical event, he's talking about a future event from 00:38:12.32\00:38:14.62 his time. 00:38:14.66\00:38:16.02 When you see armies surrounding Jerusalem, 00:38:16.06\00:38:17.73 that occurred in 70 AD, it brought the destruction 00:38:17.76\00:38:20.73 of Jerusalem. 00:38:20.76\00:38:22.13 So, from Christ's own words, you can't apply this abomination of 00:38:22.16\00:38:25.53 desolation or this little horn power to Antiochus Epiphanes. 00:38:25.57\00:38:29.54 It has to be the Roman power, pagan Rome followed then by 00:38:29.57\00:38:33.94 papal Rome. 00:38:33.98\00:38:35.81 So, hopefully you understand that because, as mentioned, 00:38:35.84\00:38:37.38 it is a popular teaching today that the little horn is not Rome 00:38:37.41\00:38:41.55 or the papacy, but it's Antiochus Epiphanes. 00:38:41.58\00:38:45.32 All right, the next question we want to consider then is, 00:38:45.35\00:38:48.19 what is meant by the daily sacrifice? 00:38:48.22\00:38:52.03 It says, "The little horn power would remove the daily 00:38:52.06\00:38:53.96 sacrifice." 00:38:54.00\00:38:55.76 If you have your Bibles, look now at verse 11. 00:38:55.80\00:38:57.77 Talking about this little horn power and it says this, 00:38:57.80\00:39:03.30 "He even exalted himself as high as the Prince of the Host." 00:39:03.34\00:39:07.14 Who's the Prince of the Host? 00:39:07.18\00:39:09.14 Jesus. 00:39:09.18\00:39:10.88 "And by him," that is the little horn power, 00:39:10.91\00:39:13.15 "the daily sacrifices were taken away and the place of his 00:39:13.18\00:39:17.39 sanctuary was cast down." 00:39:17.42\00:39:19.75 Now, one of the things that the Roman power would do, 00:39:19.79\00:39:22.66 the papacy in particular, would cast down the sanctuary and the 00:39:22.69\00:39:28.96 daily sacrifices. 00:39:29.00\00:39:30.77 Verse 12, "Because transgression, an 00:39:30.80\00:39:32.93 army was given over to the horn to oppose the daily 00:39:32.97\00:39:35.47 sacrifices, and he cast the truth down to the ground, 00:39:35.50\00:39:39.37 and he did all of this and he prospered." 00:39:39.41\00:39:42.04 Again, we're talking about the papal power. 00:39:42.08\00:39:44.05 Verse 13, "Then I heard one speaking to the other, 00:39:44.08\00:39:49.32 of one of the holy ones who said, 00:39:49.35\00:39:51.92 'How long will be the vision concerning the daily sacrifices 00:39:51.95\00:39:55.66 and the transgression of desolation to be given both the 00:39:55.69\00:39:59.19 sanctuary and the host to be trampled underfoot?'" 00:39:59.23\00:40:03.03 So, what then are the daily sacrifices? 00:40:03.06\00:40:05.47 Got to understand that remember the context of Daniel chapter 8 00:40:05.50\00:40:08.14 is in sanctuary language or imagery. 00:40:08.17\00:40:11.04 In the Old Testament sanctuary, a daily sacrifice is offered, 00:40:11.07\00:40:14.64 a lamb was brought in the morning and in the evening, 00:40:14.68\00:40:17.11 and it represented the atonement or forgiveness 00:40:17.15\00:40:20.78 through a substitute. 00:40:20.82\00:40:22.92 It pointed to Jesus, the Lamb of God that would take away the 00:40:22.95\00:40:25.35 sins of the world. 00:40:25.39\00:40:26.92 So, when it says the little horn power would try and do away 00:40:26.96\00:40:30.63 with the daily sacrifice, it's referring to what this horn 00:40:30.66\00:40:34.30 power would do to try and remove an understanding of the ministry 00:40:34.30\00:40:39.40 of Jesus of his sacrifice for us on Calvary. 00:40:39.43\00:40:43.67 He's talking about the papal power. 00:40:43.71\00:40:45.54 It would misrepresent the gospel and the work that Jesus is doing 00:40:45.57\00:40:49.21 for us. 00:40:49.24\00:40:51.05 Hebrews chapter 8 makes it very clear as to where the sanctuary 00:40:51.08\00:40:54.45 is today and what Jesus is doing as our high priest. 00:40:54.48\00:40:58.15 Hebrews chapter 8, verse 1 says, "Now this is the main point of 00:40:58.19\00:41:01.59 the things that we are saying. 00:41:01.62\00:41:03.53 We have such a high priest who is seated at the right hand of 00:41:03.56\00:41:06.23 the throne of the majesty of the heavens, 00:41:06.26\00:41:09.73 a minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle, 00:41:09.76\00:41:12.50 which the Lord erected, not man." 00:41:12.53\00:41:15.30 So, in Hebrews, it tells us that Jesus is in heaven and He's 00:41:15.34\00:41:18.87 ministering in the heavenly sanctuary, not the earthly. 00:41:18.91\00:41:22.28 Number 3, verse 3 of Hebrews 8 says, 00:41:22.31\00:41:25.01 "For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts 00:41:25.05\00:41:27.85 and sacrifices, therefore it was necessary that this one also has 00:41:27.88\00:41:31.89 something to offer. 00:41:31.92\00:41:34.32 For if He was on the earth, He would not be a priest, 00:41:34.36\00:41:36.73 since there are priests who offer gifts according to the 00:41:36.76\00:41:38.69 law, who serve as a copy and a shadow of the heavenly things, 00:41:38.73\00:41:42.63 as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make 00:41:42.66\00:41:45.67 the tabernacle. 00:41:45.70\00:41:47.44 For he said, 'See that thou make all things according to the 00:41:47.47\00:41:50.47 pattern that was showed you in the mount.'" 00:41:50.51\00:41:53.21 Verse 6 says, "But now He has obtained a more excellent 00:41:53.24\00:41:56.34 ministry in as much as He is also the mediator of a better 00:41:56.38\00:42:00.25 covenant, which was established on better promises." 00:42:00.28\00:42:04.22 So, Hebrews chapter 8 makes it very clear that there is a 00:42:04.25\00:42:06.96 heavenly sanctuary. 00:42:06.99\00:42:08.79 Jesus is a high priest who ministers for us, 00:42:08.82\00:42:11.43 and it's his sacrifice that brings salvation. 00:42:11.46\00:42:14.60 The little horn power would try to misrepresent what Jesus is 00:42:14.63\00:42:20.47 doing in heaven, would take the truth of his sacrifice and his 00:42:20.50\00:42:25.51 atonement and cast it down to the ground. 00:42:25.54\00:42:29.48 Misrepresented, that's what's being described here. 00:42:29.51\00:42:32.71 So, how did this daily sacrifice get taken away? 00:42:32.75\00:42:37.49 How did the papacy remove this daily sacrifice? 00:42:37.52\00:42:40.89 First of all, we noticed that there 00:42:40.92\00:42:42.66 was a counterfeit sanctuary. 00:42:42.69\00:42:44.96 The Roman Catholic church on earth has usurped the place of 00:42:44.99\00:42:48.70 Christ's true tabernacle in heaven. 00:42:48.73\00:42:51.40 In other words, the Roman church says that salvation is found in 00:42:51.43\00:42:54.67 the church. 00:42:54.70\00:42:56.64 And if you're outside the church, 00:42:56.67\00:42:59.04 you don't have access to salvation, 00:42:59.07\00:43:01.41 thus you have excommunication. 00:43:01.44\00:43:03.68 When the church would banish someone from the church, 00:43:03.71\00:43:07.05 in essence they were saying, "You don't have salvation." 00:43:07.08\00:43:10.39 Well, where is our sanctuary, where we find salvation today? 00:43:10.42\00:43:14.46 It's not on the earth, it's not the church, but it's in heaven, 00:43:14.49\00:43:17.79 where Jesus ministers as the high priest. 00:43:17.83\00:43:20.13 Point number two, a counterfeit sacrifice. 00:43:20.16\00:43:22.70 The sacrifice of the mass has been given to usurp the place of 00:43:22.73\00:43:26.30 Christ's true, once for all sacrifice, 00:43:26.33\00:43:29.84 His atoning sacrifice on Calvary. 00:43:29.87\00:43:31.71 There is a counterfeit priesthood, where you 00:43:31.74\00:43:33.91 have human priests who can't forgive sins. 00:43:33.94\00:43:37.71 Who only can forgive sins? 00:43:37.75\00:43:39.28 That's Jesus. 00:43:39.31\00:43:40.82 So, we go directly to Jesus to obtain forgiveness, 00:43:40.85\00:43:43.02 we don't go to a human priest. 00:43:43.05\00:43:45.22 There is a counterfeit mediator. 00:43:45.25\00:43:47.46 Not only is Christ our mediator, but according to the papal 00:43:47.49\00:43:51.16 power, Mary is declared to, in some cases, 00:43:51.19\00:43:54.10 even be more compassionate and accessible as a mediator. 00:43:54.10\00:43:59.40 She is a co-mediator with Christ. 00:43:59.43\00:44:02.44 Point number five, there is a counterfeit vicar of Christ or 00:44:02.47\00:44:05.64 representative of Christ. 00:44:05.67\00:44:08.34 The pope has usurped the place of the Holy Spirit as the 00:44:08.38\00:44:12.05 infallible teacher of divine truth and the true successor of 00:44:12.08\00:44:16.05 Christ on the earth. 00:44:16.08\00:44:18.19 Jesus said to His disciples, "I'm going to leave you, 00:44:18.22\00:44:21.06 but I will not leave you orphans, 00:44:21.09\00:44:22.96 but I will send the Holy Spirit. 00:44:22.99\00:44:25.43 He will represent Me, He will speak of Me." 00:44:25.46\00:44:28.50 But in the papal power, the pope takes the place of the 00:44:28.53\00:44:32.63 Holy Spirit, he is the one that speaks for God or at least 00:44:32.67\00:44:35.67 claims to speak for God. 00:44:35.70\00:44:37.64 There is also a counterfeit way of salvation. 00:44:37.67\00:44:40.31 Salvation by works through prayers and penances, 00:44:40.34\00:44:43.55 this has usurped the place of salvation by God's free grace. 00:44:43.58\00:44:47.62 And of course, that was the point in particular that sparked 00:44:47.65\00:44:49.85 the Protestant Reformation. 00:44:49.88\00:44:51.89 Well, the Bible makes clear that we are saved by grace through 00:44:51.92\00:44:54.56 faith in Jesus, not through a church or not by asking 00:44:54.59\00:44:59.29 forgiveness from a priest, but we go directly to Jesus, 00:44:59.33\00:45:03.63 our high priest, who ministers for us in the 00:45:03.67\00:45:05.57 heavenly sanctuary. 00:45:05.60\00:45:07.27 So, what Daniel chapter 8 is doing, 00:45:07.30\00:45:09.17 it's identifying a power that would rule right till the very 00:45:09.20\00:45:12.31 end of time that would try to misrepresent the truth of 00:45:12.34\00:45:16.75 Christ's sacrifice and His high priestly ministry. 00:45:16.78\00:45:20.78 And that's what's been highlighted here. 00:45:20.82\00:45:23.25 But then the verse says in verse 14, "Until 2,300 days, 00:45:23.28\00:45:27.29 then the sanctuary shall be cleansed." 00:45:27.32\00:45:31.09 So, what is this cleansing of the sanctuary mean? 00:45:31.13\00:45:34.30 Well, when we talk about the cleansing of the sanctuary, 00:45:34.30\00:45:36.90 there are two parts to this cleansing work. 00:45:36.93\00:45:39.90 There is a cleansing that takes place in heaven, 00:45:39.93\00:45:43.00 as well as a cleansing that takes place on the earth. 00:45:43.04\00:45:46.68 When it talks about a cleansing in heaven, 00:45:46.71\00:45:48.41 this will be accomplished by the commencement of the great 00:45:48.44\00:45:50.91 heavenly day of atonement, when the confessed sins of God's 00:45:50.95\00:45:54.55 children are blotted out of the heavenly record. 00:45:54.58\00:45:58.42 Now, verse 14 of Daniel 8 says, "Until 2,300 days, 00:45:58.45\00:46:01.62 then the sanctuary shall be cleansed," 00:46:01.66\00:46:03.39 that announced the beginning of this heavenly ministry, 00:46:03.43\00:46:06.96 where Jesus is cleansing the record of the sins of those who 00:46:07.00\00:46:10.70 have confessed, those who have exercised faith in Jesus. 00:46:10.73\00:46:14.27 And that work is going on right now. 00:46:14.30\00:46:17.44 But in addition to the work of cleansing that takes place in 00:46:17.47\00:46:19.94 heaven in the heavenly sanctuary, 00:46:19.97\00:46:21.88 there is also a work of cleansing that takes place on 00:46:21.91\00:46:25.45 the earth. 00:46:25.48\00:46:26.82 Now, I've asked you this before, how many different types of 00:46:26.85\00:46:29.95 sanctuaries are described in the Bible? 00:46:29.98\00:46:33.89 Well, we got the obvious ones, we've got the sanctuary in 00:46:33.92\00:46:36.42 heaven, and that is the work of cleansing that Jesus is doing 00:46:36.46\00:46:39.29 for us in heaven. 00:46:39.33\00:46:41.10 But the Bible also speaks of a sanctuary on the earth during 00:46:41.13\00:46:44.07 the days of Moses. 00:46:44.10\00:46:45.90 God told Moses to build a sanctuary, 00:46:45.93\00:46:47.57 so we have the heavenly sanctuary, 00:46:47.60\00:46:49.24 we have the earthly sanctuary. 00:46:49.27\00:46:51.47 But then the Bible also speaks of Jesus being the temple of 00:46:51.51\00:46:55.38 the sanctuary. 00:46:55.41\00:46:57.25 Jesus said, "Destroy this temple and in three days, 00:46:57.28\00:46:59.31 I will raise it up again." 00:46:59.35\00:47:01.55 And He was speaking of Himself, so that would be the third. 00:47:01.58\00:47:04.19 And then the Bible also speaks of the believer as being the 00:47:04.22\00:47:07.89 temple or the sanctuary. 00:47:07.92\00:47:09.59 "Know you not that your body is the temple of the 00:47:09.62\00:47:11.39 Holy Spirit," right? 00:47:11.43\00:47:12.96 That dwells in you. 00:47:12.99\00:47:14.83 And so there's four, and then the fifth would be the church. 00:47:14.83\00:47:18.50 The Bible speaks of the church as being the sanctuary or the 00:47:18.53\00:47:21.94 temple, and we're living stones built upon Jesus, 00:47:21.97\00:47:25.37 the chief cornerstone. 00:47:25.41\00:47:27.58 So, when it talks about a work of cleansing, 00:47:27.61\00:47:29.88 not only is he referring to a cleansing of the record of sin 00:47:29.91\00:47:32.65 in heaven, but it's also referring to a work of 00:47:32.68\00:47:36.38 cleansing, a reestablishment of truth on the earth through the 00:47:36.42\00:47:40.69 church, through the believer, a cleansing in the heart and in 00:47:40.72\00:47:44.79 the life, a reflecting of the character of Jesus to the world. 00:47:44.83\00:47:50.47 So, this work of cleansing in heaven is paralleled by a work 00:47:50.50\00:47:53.77 of cleansing that takes place on the earth. 00:47:53.80\00:47:56.40 And when the work of cleansing is complete in heaven, 00:47:56.44\00:47:59.57 there will be a work of cleansing that'll be complete on 00:47:59.61\00:48:02.68 the earth. 00:48:02.71\00:48:04.28 And when Jesus is finished, this high priestly ministry, 00:48:04.31\00:48:07.22 this work of cleansing, then he says, "He that is holy, 00:48:07.25\00:48:11.09 let him be holy still. 00:48:11.12\00:48:13.29 He that is filthy, let him be filthy still." 00:48:13.32\00:48:16.06 Probation closes, and then Jesus removes his priestly robe, 00:48:16.09\00:48:20.50 puts on his kingly robe, and Jesus comes back as King of 00:48:20.53\00:48:23.43 kings and Lord of lords. 00:48:23.47\00:48:26.00 His work of high priest is finished, 00:48:26.03\00:48:28.77 and now He's coming as a king to take us home. 00:48:28.80\00:48:32.47 So, what's brought to view then in Daniel chapter 8 is not only 00:48:32.51\00:48:36.34 Medo-Persia and Greece and Rome, but it's also identifying a 00:48:36.38\00:48:41.48 power that would rule or be around all the way to the time 00:48:41.52\00:48:44.89 of the end that would try to misrepresent the sacrifice 00:48:44.92\00:48:48.32 of Jesus. 00:48:48.36\00:48:50.19 But at the same time, it says at the time of the end, 00:48:50.23\00:48:52.56 the truth of what Jesus is doing as our high priest will be 00:48:52.59\00:48:55.93 revealed, and the work of cleansing that Jesus is doing in 00:48:55.96\00:48:59.40 heaven through the antitypical day of atonement will be 00:48:59.43\00:49:02.54 experienced amongst His people on the earth, 00:49:02.57\00:49:05.77 a special work of cleansing or revival that takes place in the 00:49:05.81\00:49:10.35 hearts and the lives of believers. 00:49:10.38\00:49:13.72 So, from Medo-Persia through Greece, Rome, the papal power, 00:49:13.75\00:49:20.22 the cleansing of the sanctuary, we come to where we are today. 00:49:20.26\00:49:25.46 We are living in this final phase of Christ's high priestly 00:49:25.49\00:49:28.83 ministry, an entire panorama of history to show us where we 00:49:28.86\00:49:33.90 are today. 00:49:33.94\00:49:35.67 That's what we find in Daniel 2, Daniel 7, 00:49:35.70\00:49:38.44 and in particularly here in Daniel chapter 8. 00:49:38.47\00:49:41.01 Now, Daniel chapter 8 doesn't talk about this 2300 days as to 00:49:41.04\00:49:44.11 when it begins. 00:49:44.15\00:49:45.78 The answer to when the 2300 days begins you find in Daniel 00:49:45.81\00:49:48.68 chapter 9, and that'll be our study next week. 00:49:48.72\00:49:52.02 But just at this point, we understand what this cleansing 00:49:52.05\00:49:54.29 is all about, the cleansing of the sanctuary. 00:49:54.32\00:49:56.66 And next time, we'll find out when exactly this begins. share it with others. 00:51:09.60\00:51:13.40 announcer: Amazing Facts, changed lives. 00:51:18.61\00:51:21.98 Kip Johnston: I was raised very spoiled, very lucky, 00:51:27.22\00:51:29.95 very blessed. 00:51:29.98\00:51:31.89 I was raised in the church, actually. 00:51:31.92\00:51:33.62 As a child, God was presented to me as vindictive, 00:51:33.66\00:51:37.13 so it didn't interest me very much. 00:51:37.16\00:51:39.56 When I got much older, I was told by a friend of mine that I 00:51:39.59\00:51:42.73 wasn't even a Christian. 00:51:42.76\00:51:44.30 I said, "I'm a good person, I don't steal, I don't cheat, 00:51:44.33\00:51:46.77 I don't kill." 00:51:46.80\00:51:48.54 And it was told to me that, "No, in order to be a Christian, 00:51:48.57\00:51:51.51 you must be born again." 00:51:51.54\00:51:53.34 The next day, I went and appropriated a Bible, 00:51:53.38\00:51:55.54 I read the New Testament. 00:51:55.58\00:51:57.28 I just set the Bible down and said, "God, if you're real, 00:51:57.31\00:52:00.22 deal me in." 00:52:00.25\00:52:02.68 I went to a Christian college to study theology and about God. 00:52:02.72\00:52:06.52 But when I left college, I took a job selling Christian 00:52:06.55\00:52:09.56 literature and Bibles door to door, and I went flat broke. 00:52:09.59\00:52:13.96 I stopped in to play poker in a place in LA. 00:52:14.00\00:52:17.03 I was an instant success. 00:52:17.07\00:52:19.17 My life became poker, and I got books, and I read poker books. 00:52:19.20\00:52:22.10 I had my Bible in one hand and a poker book in the other. 00:52:22.14\00:52:24.31 I was a Christian poker player. 00:52:24.34\00:52:25.87 I thought that the Lord was blessing me. 00:52:25.91\00:52:27.38 The amount of money that I made playing poker was so big, 00:52:27.41\00:52:31.28 it would scare you. 00:52:31.31\00:52:32.78 I was very self-indulgent, I did not deny myself anything that I 00:52:32.81\00:52:35.85 thought would make me happy, but I was still empty. 00:52:35.88\00:52:39.79 I went to all the Christian churches, 00:52:39.82\00:52:42.12 gave them all a fair shot. 00:52:42.16\00:52:43.66 Some of them three months, some of them two years. 00:52:43.69\00:52:46.23 Unimpressed. 00:52:46.26\00:52:47.73 Saturday morning, I happened to be traveling from one poker 00:52:47.76\00:52:50.47 place to another, I just happened to have a little TV in 00:52:50.50\00:52:53.34 my truck, and Doug Batchelor came up on there. 00:52:53.37\00:52:57.31 And I was like, "This guy makes sense." 00:52:57.34\00:52:59.51 I knew Doug Batchelor was in Sacramento, 00:52:59.54\00:53:01.08 so I came to meet him. 00:53:01.11\00:53:03.88 I told him, I said, "I am a Christian doing God's work, 00:53:03.91\00:53:06.98 and I make a living playing poker. 00:53:07.02\00:53:08.95 And I am giving away these great converses to players, 00:53:08.98\00:53:11.99 I go to church and help the community, 00:53:12.02\00:53:13.96 and don't tell me that I'm not doing what's right." 00:53:13.99\00:53:16.46 And he said, "No, you got to get out of that casino, period." 00:53:16.49\00:53:20.70 I said, "I'm making good money." 00:53:20.73\00:53:22.86 And he says, "I know that you know what I'm telling you 00:53:22.90\00:53:24.87 is right." 00:53:24.90\00:53:26.50 And I did. 00:53:26.53\00:53:28.34 I recognized that through it all, I wasn't happy. 00:53:28.37\00:53:32.91 I said, "Lord, my life is a disaster. 00:53:32.94\00:53:35.31 I'm selfish, I'm empty. 00:53:35.34\00:53:37.78 I've tried to do what you wanted me to do so many times, 00:53:37.81\00:53:41.08 and I've always failed. 00:53:41.12\00:53:43.79 Why do I always fail? 00:53:43.82\00:53:45.75 Why do I always lose my way?" 00:53:45.79\00:53:48.06 And the Lord spoke to me, says, "You got to be involved. 00:53:51.23\00:53:57.23 You got to be involved in my work." 00:53:57.27\00:54:00.20 And that's when I said, "I need to dedicate my life fully to 00:54:00.24\00:54:02.87 God's work." 00:54:02.90\00:54:05.21 I, by the grace of God and my wife, we went to India. 00:54:05.24\00:54:10.35 Until the Lord tells me otherwise, 00:54:10.38\00:54:11.91 we're going to build orphanages in India so that children can 00:54:11.95\00:54:14.82 grow up and hear about Jesus, and they can go tell the 1.3 00:54:14.85\00:54:18.99 billion people in their country. 00:54:19.02\00:54:21.79 God had a plan for me, and now I just want to be fully dedicated 00:54:21.82\00:54:26.56 to the Lord's cause. 00:54:26.59\00:54:29.73 I am Kip Johnston, and God used Amazing Facts to change my life. 00:54:29.76\00:54:36.04 ¤¤ 00:54:38.41\00:54:43.95 Doug Batchelor: On Christmas Eve, 1971, 00:54:55.09\00:54:57.63 17-year-old Juliane Koepcke boarded LANSA flight 508 with 00:54:57.66\00:55:02.30 her mother in Lima, Peru. 00:55:02.33\00:55:04.43 They intended to join her father for Christmas at his research 00:55:04.47\00:55:07.34 station in the Amazon rainforest. 00:55:07.37\00:55:10.27 After crossing the Andes at about 21,000 feet, 00:55:10.31\00:55:13.71 their aircraft was enveloped by large, dark thunder clouds, 00:55:13.74\00:55:17.65 and it encountered severe turbulence. 00:55:17.68\00:55:19.95 Lightning was flashing everywhere and the plane was 00:55:19.98\00:55:22.02 shaken violently, which naturally terrified 00:55:22.05\00:55:24.52 the passengers. 00:55:24.55\00:55:26.59 Then a bolt of lightning struck the plane's engine and tore off 00:55:26.62\00:55:30.33 a wing. 00:55:30.36\00:55:31.99 As the doomed airliner hurdled towards the earth, 00:55:32.03\00:55:34.66 the cabin came apart, and the next thing she knew, 00:55:34.73\00:55:37.70 Juliane found herself strapped alone to a row of seats falling 00:55:37.73\00:55:41.74 and spinning silently from over 10,000 feet 00:55:41.77\00:55:44.81 above the rainforest. 00:55:44.84\00:55:46.71 She plummeted through the jungle canopy and slammed on the 00:55:46.74\00:55:49.11 forest floor. 00:55:49.14\00:55:50.95 When she awoke the next day, Juliane was amazed to realize 00:55:50.98\00:55:54.22 she had survived the two-mile fall with just a broken 00:55:54.25\00:55:57.55 collarbone and a bad gash in her arm. 00:55:57.59\00:56:00.29 After failing to find any other survivors, 00:56:00.32\00:56:03.29 Juliane relied on what her father had taught her, 00:56:03.32\00:56:05.86 that walking downstream will always lead to civilization. 00:56:05.89\00:56:09.93 So, with a bag of candy that had fallen from the plane and one 00:56:09.96\00:56:13.10 sandal, she started walking. 00:56:13.13\00:56:15.97 For ten days, Juliane hobbled, swam, or floated downstream. 00:56:16.00\00:56:20.64 Her wounds became infected and she was plagued by maggots while 00:56:20.68\00:56:23.65 having to dodge crocodiles, piranhas, 00:56:23.68\00:56:26.08 and relentless insects. 00:56:26.11\00:56:28.62 Eventually, she came to a shack, where she slept, 00:56:28.65\00:56:32.02 and she was soon discovered by Peruvian loggers. 00:56:32.05\00:56:35.12 Eventually, Juliane was united with her amazed father. 00:56:35.16\00:56:39.06 It's hard to imagine a 17-year-old girl surviving such 00:56:39.09\00:56:42.13 a fall, and then hiking alone out of the world's 00:56:42.16\00:56:45.50 largest rainforest. 00:56:45.53\00:56:47.94 You know, the Bible talks about some who survived an even 00:56:47.97\00:56:50.24 greater fall than Juliane. 00:56:50.27\00:56:52.41 In fact, according to the Scriptures, 00:56:52.44\00:56:54.31 when Adam and Eve fell in the garden of Eden, 00:56:54.34\00:56:56.68 it brought the whole human race down. 00:56:56.71\00:56:58.88 But Jesus came to redeem the world from sin. 00:56:58.91\00:57:02.28 Perhaps you're thinking to yourself, "Well, 00:57:02.32\00:57:04.35 that's okay for the world, but I've fallen too far." 00:57:04.39\00:57:08.39 Well, if the Lord can save Juliane, God can save you. 00:57:08.42\00:57:11.39 You've not gone farther than Moses, who was guilty of murder, 00:57:11.43\00:57:14.30 or David, who was guilty of adultery, or Peter, 00:57:14.36\00:57:17.00 who denied Jesus. 00:57:17.03\00:57:19.10 And all of them were saved and restored from their fall. 00:57:19.13\00:57:22.47 Or maybe you're thinking, "I've fallen too many times." 00:57:22.50\00:57:25.24 Be of good courage. 00:57:25.27\00:57:27.11 It says in Proverbs chapter 24, verse 16, 00:57:27.14\00:57:29.24 "A righteous man falls seven times and rises again." 00:57:29.28\00:57:32.81 And Jesus cast seven devils out of Mary Magdalene. 00:57:32.85\00:57:35.82 So, don't get discouraged, friend, if you've fallen, 00:57:35.85\00:57:38.32 get back up again. 00:57:38.35\00:57:39.95 The same way that He could save Juliane, 00:57:39.99\00:57:42.22 lead her from that lost condition in the rainforest, 00:57:42.26\00:57:45.06 and restore her to her father, Jesus can lead you from your 00:57:45.09\00:57:48.43 lost condition and restore you to your heavenly Father. 00:57:48.46\00:57:52.57 ¤¤ 00:57:52.60\00:57:59.11
