Let's bow our heads for a word of prayer. 00:04:39.27\00:04:41.38 Dear Father in heaven, we thank You once again that we're able 00:04:41.41\00:04:43.55 to gather together and open up Your Word and study a very 00:04:43.58\00:04:45.61 important subject. 00:04:45.65\00:04:47.05 Matter of fact, we're going to be talking about this special 00:04:47.08\00:04:49.68 day today, talking about the Sabbath. 00:04:49.72\00:04:51.65 And so we do pray that Your Holy Spirit to come and guide 00:04:51.69\00:04:54.12 our hearts and minds. 00:04:54.16\00:04:55.59 And we ask this all in Jesus's name, amen. 00:04:55.62\00:04:58.69 Now, as mentioned, we're going to be studying an important 00:04:58.73\00:05:01.00 subject dealing with the Sabbath today, 00:05:01.03\00:05:03.53 it's lesson number three in our lesson quarterly. 00:05:03.57\00:05:05.37 I'd like to invite Pastor Doug to come forward, 00:05:05.40\00:05:07.27 it's a great subject, and we thought, 00:05:07.30\00:05:09.57 well, let's share teach on our subject of the Sabbath today. 00:05:09.60\00:05:13.61 So, Pastor Doug? 00:05:13.64\00:05:15.11 Doug Batchelor: Amen, thank you, Pastor Ross. 00:05:15.14\00:05:16.61 And welcome, everybody. 00:05:16.64\00:05:17.95 We're glad that you're joining us here. 00:05:17.98\00:05:19.88 Pastor Ross and I have been gone a couple of weeks in Michigan 00:05:19.91\00:05:22.82 taping a new series of programs for kids. 00:05:22.85\00:05:26.55 And we had a great experience while we were there, 00:05:26.59\00:05:28.22 but it's good to be back home. 00:05:28.26\00:05:30.19 Want to welcome those who might be watching on satellite, 00:05:30.23\00:05:33.53 3ABN, Hope Channel, Roku, Facebook, 00:05:33.56\00:05:36.43 and of course our friends here. 00:05:36.46\00:05:38.23 We have an extended church family out there, 00:05:38.27\00:05:40.40 and we're getting into this study of "The Least of These." 00:05:40.44\00:05:46.41 And in particular, our study today is really about some 00:05:46.44\00:05:49.11 different aspects of the Sabbath. 00:05:49.14\00:05:51.38 And if you look in the lesson, 00:05:51.41\00:05:55.75 we have a memory verse, the memory verse comes to us from 00:05:55.78\00:05:58.19 Mark chapter 2, verse 27. 00:05:58.22\00:06:00.52 And you can say this with me, most of us know this, 00:06:00.56\00:06:03.49 Mark chapter 2 verse 27, "The Sabbath--" 00:06:03.53\00:06:07.60 All right, well I mean, let's start all over again. 00:06:07.66\00:06:09.96 We can try to do that together. 00:06:10.00\00:06:11.63 "And He said to them, 'The Sabbath was made for man and not 00:06:11.67\00:06:17.01 man for the Sabbath." 00:06:17.04\00:06:19.54 That's a very important verse, and you'll see a little later on 00:06:19.57\00:06:22.28 in our lesson why that's so important. 00:06:22.31\00:06:24.48 You know, Pastor Ross, I thought it might be a good idea to 00:06:24.51\00:06:27.32 establish before we dive into the lesson, 00:06:27.35\00:06:29.22 many people think that the Sabbath is something that God 00:06:29.25\00:06:33.49 created at Mount Sinai and gave to the children of Israel. 00:06:33.52\00:06:36.86 But the Bible tells us the Sabbath appears when first? 00:06:36.89\00:06:42.06 Right, creation. 00:06:42.10\00:06:43.73 But you'd be surprised, people argue, 00:06:43.77\00:06:45.53 they say, "Well, God created the Sabbath back there on the 00:06:45.57\00:06:48.97 seventh day, but he didn't really ask anyone to keep it 00:06:49.00\00:06:52.44 until you get to Genesis." 00:06:52.47\00:06:54.41 Or rather until you get to Exodus chapter 20, 00:06:54.44\00:06:57.35 is that true? 00:06:57.38\00:06:59.08 So, what are the Scriptures that you use to reinforce that? 00:06:59.11\00:07:03.18 Well, got a few here, I don't know if you want 00:07:03.22\00:07:05.35 to dive in with any of them. 00:07:05.39\00:07:06.99 Jean: Sure, absolutely. 00:07:07.02\00:07:08.26 I think one of the key ones is Genesis chapter 2 and verse 3, 00:07:08.29\00:07:10.36 and there we find three very important words 00:07:10.39\00:07:13.36 talking about the Sabbath. 00:07:13.40\00:07:15.10 It says, "Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, 00:07:15.13\00:07:19.03 because in it He rested from all the work which 00:07:19.07\00:07:21.97 God had created made." 00:07:22.00\00:07:24.14 So, here we find God blessing a day, 00:07:24.17\00:07:26.88 God sanctifying a day, and God resting on that day, 00:07:26.91\00:07:30.61 setting this day apart from the rest of the days of the week. 00:07:30.65\00:07:34.18 Doug: Now, it's hard to imagine that God has made 00:07:34.22\00:07:36.99 man on what day of the week? 00:07:37.02\00:07:40.42 Sixth day. 00:07:40.46\00:07:41.76 And then after man is made, He makes something for man. 00:07:41.79\00:07:45.09 Now, what was our memory verse? 00:07:45.13\00:07:47.30 The Sabbath was made for the Jews. 00:07:47.30\00:07:50.47 No, see, God makes man, mankind, Adam and Eve. 00:07:50.50\00:07:56.04 And then the next day, He makes a day, 00:07:56.07\00:07:58.87 and he sanctifies that day, makes it holy, 00:07:58.91\00:08:01.81 and God rests that day. 00:08:01.84\00:08:03.48 Wouldn't it be hard to believe that God rests that day, 00:08:03.51\00:08:06.68 He sanctified that day, and He didn't expect 00:08:06.72\00:08:09.12 Adam and Eve to do that with Him? 00:08:09.15\00:08:10.95 Say, 'You guys do whatever you want, I'm resting today. 00:08:10.99\00:08:13.79 I'm going to keep this day holy, but you don't have to." 00:08:13.82\00:08:16.29 But that's actually what some people argue. 00:08:16.32\00:08:18.99 Jean: You know, something else that's interesting, 00:08:19.03\00:08:21.20 if you compare the two institutions that we are first 00:08:21.23\00:08:23.70 introduced to in Genesis chapter 1 verse--chapter 1 and chapter 00:08:23.73\00:08:27.34 2, not only is the Sabbath introduced in the first few 00:08:27.37\00:08:30.51 verses of Genesis chapter 2, but in Genesis chapter 1, 00:08:30.54\00:08:34.04 verse 28, you have marriage that's introduced. 00:08:34.08\00:08:37.38 And it's interesting to note that God blessed not only the 00:08:37.41\00:08:40.68 Sabbath, but he also blessed marriage. 00:08:40.72\00:08:42.92 Same word in the original Hebrew, 00:08:42.95\00:08:44.82 blessed for marriage and blessed for the Sabbath. 00:08:44.85\00:08:47.12 And I don't think anyone would argue that marriage is just, 00:08:47.16\00:08:50.56 you know, for the Jew or that somehow marriage blessing came 00:08:50.59\00:08:54.93 to an end when sin entered. 00:08:54.96\00:08:57.47 Thus the Sabbath is not just for a particular group of people, 00:08:57.50\00:09:00.44 it is really for mankind. 00:09:00.47\00:09:02.47 Same blessing, same word used is used for both 00:09:02.50\00:09:05.81 the Sabbath and marriage. 00:09:05.84\00:09:07.21 Doug: Amen. 00:09:07.24\00:09:08.54 So, we read that the Sabbath was made for man 00:09:08.58\00:09:10.48 way back in the Garden of Eden. 00:09:10.51\00:09:12.05 Can someone think of something else that was made for man? 00:09:12.08\00:09:16.58 Woman, it is not good that a man should be alone. 00:09:16.62\00:09:19.22 So, if you think we no longer need the Sabbath, 00:09:19.25\00:09:21.49 we probably also no longer need women. 00:09:21.52\00:09:23.16 They were both part of God's original plan, 00:09:23.19\00:09:26.39 isn't that right? 00:09:26.43\00:09:27.93 For man. 00:09:27.96\00:09:29.70 And you know, while we're on that subject, 00:09:29.73\00:09:31.77 as Pastor Ross mentioned, these are two 00:09:31.80\00:09:33.57 sacred institutions from Eden. 00:09:33.60\00:09:35.30 Is God working to destroy those sacred institutions 00:09:35.34\00:09:39.37 in the last days? 00:09:39.41\00:09:41.71 Is God attacking marriage? 00:09:41.74\00:09:43.81 No, no, no, it's Satan. 00:09:43.85\00:09:45.91 It's Satan attacking marriage. 00:09:45.95\00:09:48.15 Yeah, so Satan is attacking the institutions of God, 00:09:48.18\00:09:50.69 marriage and what else? 00:09:50.72\00:09:53.32 The Sabbath in the last days. 00:09:53.36\00:09:55.09 And so that--it shouldn't surprise us that you're 00:09:55.12\00:09:56.93 going to see that. 00:09:56.96\00:09:58.33 And one other thing is when you say the Sabbath was made 00:09:58.36\00:10:00.76 for man, the word "man" there is the word 00:10:00.80\00:10:03.23 "Anthropos," and it means humanity, mankind. 00:10:03.26\00:10:07.04 That's why the Bible says, "Even the sons of the stranger that 00:10:07.07\00:10:11.34 join themselves to the Lord that keep the Sabbath from polluting 00:10:11.37\00:10:14.31 it, I'll make them joyful in my house of prayer." 00:10:14.34\00:10:17.48 And so, this is something that's for all people and all time. 00:10:17.51\00:10:20.72 You want to read Genesis 26, Pastor Ross? 00:10:20.75\00:10:25.59 Jean: Yes, Genesis chapter--are you referring to Genesis-- 00:10:25.62\00:10:30.03 Doug: Twenty-six, verse five. It's the second verse in-- 00:10:30.06\00:10:33.16 Jean: Oh, there it is. I see it right in my notes. 00:10:33.19\00:10:34.96 Talking about Abraham, it says, "Because Abraham obeyed My 00:10:35.00\00:10:37.53 voice and kept My charge, My commandments, 00:10:37.57\00:10:39.93 My Statutes, and My laws." 00:10:39.97\00:10:42.27 So, we're going from creation with Adam and Eve, 00:10:42.30\00:10:44.21 moving forward in history, and now we're coming to Abraham. 00:10:44.24\00:10:46.78 And here it tells us specifically that Abraham obeyed 00:10:46.81\00:10:49.64 God and kept His commandments. 00:10:49.68\00:10:52.55 Well, the commandments must've been known to Abraham in order 00:10:52.58\00:10:55.62 for him to obey them. 00:10:55.65\00:10:57.09 Doug: Yeah, people think that the commandments and the laws 00:10:57.12\00:10:59.92 and the statutes all came from Moses. 00:10:59.95\00:11:03.56 Who lived first, Abraham or Moses? 00:11:03.59\00:11:06.26 So, God evidently had statutes, commandments, 00:11:06.29\00:11:09.66 and laws that predated. 00:11:09.70\00:11:11.70 Now what--we know what the commandments are, 00:11:11.73\00:11:13.60 Ten Commandments. 00:11:13.64\00:11:14.97 Was it--was murder a sin before Mount Sinai, 00:11:15.00\00:11:18.31 before the Ten Commandments were given? 00:11:18.34\00:11:20.48 Where do we see that? 00:11:20.51\00:11:22.44 Cain and Abel, God said, "Sin is at your door." 00:11:22.48\00:11:25.11 Was adultery a sin before the Ten Commandments were given? 00:11:25.15\00:11:30.79 Where do we see that? 00:11:30.82\00:11:32.82 Joseph, remember he said, "How can I sin, 00:11:32.85\00:11:35.36 take my master's wife?" 00:11:35.39\00:11:37.06 Adultery, they knew adultery was a sin. 00:11:37.09\00:11:38.53 And the Sabbath was also still there, 00:11:38.56\00:11:40.80 but we've got to look at some other verses that 00:11:40.83\00:11:43.10 I think help illustrate that. 00:11:43.13\00:11:44.83 If you go for instance to Exodus 5. 00:11:44.87\00:11:47.50 Well, I'm going to start with Exodus 4. 00:11:47.54\00:11:50.71 So, this is after the call of Moses to bring the children 00:11:50.74\00:11:54.68 of Israel out of Egypt, and God says, 00:11:54.71\00:11:57.31 "Then Moses and Aaron went and gathered--" This is Exodus 4:29, 00:11:57.35\00:12:02.08 "Then Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders 00:12:02.12\00:12:05.35 of the children of Israel, and Aaron spoke all the words that 00:12:05.39\00:12:08.89 the Lord had spoken to Moses." 00:12:08.92\00:12:11.33 Now, why does Aaron speak and not Moses? 00:12:11.36\00:12:14.46 Moses has been away. 00:12:14.46\00:12:16.93 What language are the Israelites speaking in Egypt? 00:12:16.97\00:12:21.74 Probably Egyptian and Hebrew. 00:12:21.77\00:12:24.21 And so, what's happened to Moses's Egyptian after 40 years 00:12:24.24\00:12:29.48 of not speaking it? 00:12:29.51\00:12:31.15 Probably a little rusty. 00:12:31.18\00:12:32.78 And so, that's why he said, "I'm slow of tongue." 00:12:32.81\00:12:34.92 God said, "Well, don't worry, your brother, 00:12:34.95\00:12:37.45 he'll speak for you." 00:12:37.49\00:12:38.79 And so, this is why Aaron is being the spokesman 00:12:38.82\00:12:40.46 now to the people. 00:12:40.49\00:12:41.86 He's saying, "All the words the Lord had spoken to Moses. 00:12:41.89\00:12:44.53 Then he did the signs in the sight of all the people." 00:12:44.56\00:12:46.80 What else do you think they probably did there? 00:12:46.83\00:12:48.93 They said, "God is going to move in your behalf. 00:12:48.96\00:12:51.27 He's going to act for you. 00:12:51.30\00:12:53.13 You need to humble yourself, return to the Lord, 00:12:53.17\00:12:54.47 stop worshipping the gods of the Egyptians, 00:12:54.50\00:12:56.64 worship Jehovah." 00:12:56.67\00:12:58.11 And part of that would've included the Sabbath. 00:12:58.14\00:13:00.68 Now, how do we know that? 00:13:00.71\00:13:02.18 Pastor Ross, why don't you share with them what 00:13:02.21\00:13:04.48 happens in Exodus 5? 00:13:04.51\00:13:06.05 Jean: Reading from Exodus chapter 5 beginning verse 4, 00:13:06.08\00:13:08.45 it says, "Then the king of Egypt said to them, 00:13:08.48\00:13:10.72 'Moses and Aaron, why do you take the people from their work? 00:13:10.75\00:13:14.89 Get back to your labor.' 00:13:14.92\00:13:16.66 And Pharaoh said, 'Look, the people of the land are many 00:13:16.69\00:13:21.00 now, and you make them rest from their labors.'" 00:13:21.03\00:13:25.27 So, that's of course Pharaoh now complaining because Moses 00:13:25.30\00:13:28.17 and Aaron, they've spoken to the people, 00:13:28.20\00:13:30.24 and evidently the people are choosing to rest. 00:13:30.27\00:13:33.01 Well, that kind of ties in with the Sabbath. 00:13:33.04\00:13:35.84 Doug: Yeah, matter of fact, the word there--I don't know if 00:13:35.88\00:13:38.28 any of you have interlinear Bibles or you might be reading 00:13:38.31\00:13:41.25 your Bible on iPad or phone, you click on that word "rest" there 00:13:41.28\00:13:45.12 and it is the word "Shabbat." 00:13:45.15\00:13:47.02 So, specifically what the Pharaoh said to Moses and Aaron, 00:13:47.06\00:13:50.63 "You are making the people Sabbath. 00:13:50.66\00:13:54.20 And tell them to get back to work." 00:13:54.20\00:13:56.80 And so, it's pretty clear that they had returned to this. 00:13:56.83\00:14:01.17 Now, if that's not enough for you, 00:14:01.20\00:14:04.14 get your credit cards out 'cause we're going 00:14:04.17\00:14:06.17 to double your offer. 00:14:06.21\00:14:07.74 If you go to Exodus chapter 16, and this is under the section 00:14:07.78\00:14:10.85 where it says manna enough. 00:14:10.88\00:14:13.55 What chapter are the Ten Commandments given? 00:14:13.58\00:14:16.38 Exodus 20. 00:14:16.42\00:14:18.02 So, before you ever get to Exodus 20, 00:14:18.05\00:14:19.72 you read this in Exodus 16, verse 18. 00:14:19.75\00:14:22.69 It says that God told them, "Look, they're hungry. 00:14:22.72\00:14:26.26 I'll rain bread down from heaven for you. 00:14:26.29\00:14:28.26 I will do it six days a week. 00:14:28.30\00:14:30.23 You can get twice as much on the Sabbath." 00:14:30.27\00:14:32.60 And he says in verse 18, "So when they measured it by--" 00:14:32.63\00:14:37.17 Exodus 16, verse 18. 00:14:37.21\00:14:39.44 So yeah, they got twice as much on the preparation day. 00:14:39.47\00:14:43.91 "So when they measured it by omers, 00:14:43.95\00:14:46.25 he who had gathered much had nothing left over, 00:14:46.28\00:14:48.82 and he who had gathered a little had no lack. 00:14:48.85\00:14:51.09 Every man had gathered according to each one's need." 00:14:51.12\00:14:53.15 So, before we get into the manna in detail, 00:14:53.19\00:14:55.99 just notice the placement of this, it's Exodus 16. 00:14:56.02\00:14:58.79 And when they continued going out and looking for food, 00:14:58.83\00:15:02.40 God said, "How long will you break My commandments?" 00:15:02.43\00:15:07.10 And so, it was a commandment of God before they got to--and he 00:15:07.14\00:15:10.91 didn't say, "How long will you break your commandments?" 00:15:10.94\00:15:12.54 It's not a Jewish law, it says, "My commandments." 00:15:12.57\00:15:14.64 Notice it's not called the Sabbath of the Jews, 00:15:14.68\00:15:17.31 it's called the Sabbath of the Lord. 00:15:17.35\00:15:19.45 And then further evidence that the Sabbath existed before Mount 00:15:19.48\00:15:23.95 Sinai, what's the first few words of the 00:15:23.99\00:15:26.79 Sabbath commandment, Exodus 20, verse 8? 00:15:26.82\00:15:30.19 Remember. 00:15:30.23\00:15:31.53 Why would God tell them to remember something that 00:15:31.56\00:15:33.43 had never existed prior? 00:15:33.46\00:15:34.93 Why would God tell them to keep something that 00:15:34.96\00:15:38.03 had never existed prior? 00:15:38.07\00:15:40.17 He said, "Look, I made it holy, keep it holy." 00:15:40.20\00:15:42.10 And he's pointing back to when he made it holy right in the 00:15:42.14\00:15:45.21 commandment, he goes back to Genesis, creation. 00:15:45.24\00:15:49.04 Jean: Now, talking about the manna situation, 00:15:49.08\00:15:51.01 every day manna rained down, they would 00:15:51.05\00:15:52.91 gather it in the morning. 00:15:52.95\00:15:54.85 But then God of course told them they wouldn't get manna on the 00:15:54.88\00:15:57.59 Sabbath, they'd have to get a double portion Friday. 00:15:57.62\00:16:00.19 And you read in Exodus chapter 16 that there was some in the 00:16:00.22\00:16:03.63 camp of Israel that for some reason thought that God was 00:16:03.66\00:16:07.13 joking and they didn't get double supply on Friday, 00:16:07.20\00:16:09.30 and they wandered out of the camp on Sabbath to try and 00:16:09.33\00:16:13.94 gather up manna, and there was no manna available. 00:16:13.97\00:16:17.31 And then God said some rather interesting things 00:16:17.34\00:16:19.61 to the children of Israel through Moses. 00:16:19.64\00:16:21.44 This is of course before Exodus 20, 00:16:21.48\00:16:23.61 before those Ten Commandments, before the fourth commandment 00:16:23.65\00:16:26.48 is actually mentioned. 00:16:26.51\00:16:28.02 It talks about how God is saying that they do not keep My laws. 00:16:28.05\00:16:30.85 So, they were aware of the Sabbath even before Mount Sinai. 00:16:30.89\00:16:35.46 Doug: Mm-hmm, absolutely. 00:16:35.49\00:16:36.86 Now, I don't want to rush past the manna section without 00:16:36.89\00:16:38.63 reminding you, what time of day did the manna fall? 00:16:38.66\00:16:43.97 Early in the morning. 00:16:44.00\00:16:45.30 And what happened if they failed to go out and get it? 00:16:45.33\00:16:49.27 The sun came up and it sort of melted. 00:16:49.30\00:16:52.94 What does that manna represent? 00:16:52.97\00:16:57.21 Jesus said that "Moses gave you not that bread, 00:16:57.25\00:16:59.31 but I am the bread that came down from heaven." 00:16:59.35\00:17:01.68 The Word of God is that bread. 00:17:01.72\00:17:03.08 "Man doesn't live by bread alone, but by every word." 00:17:03.12\00:17:04.92 What about morning devotions? 00:17:04.95\00:17:08.46 What happens if we wait until the troubles of 00:17:08.49\00:17:10.69 the day crowd in on us? 00:17:10.73\00:17:13.13 Can we lose that time to feed our souls in the morning? 00:17:13.16\00:17:17.20 There's a precious time I think early in the day to commit 00:17:17.23\00:17:19.83 yourself to the Lord and eat that manna. 00:17:19.87\00:17:24.61 A great while before it was day, Jesus rose up 00:17:24.64\00:17:28.24 and he went out to pray. 00:17:28.28\00:17:29.78 I think it's important to take--to gather the manna. 00:17:29.81\00:17:31.65 And something else that's in the lesson I think is interesting, 00:17:31.68\00:17:34.38 we briefly mentioned 'cause it's talking about manna enough. 00:17:34.42\00:17:37.92 He told them how much to gather. 00:17:37.95\00:17:42.36 Some of them, they thought, 00:17:42.39\00:17:43.89 "Well, we don't know if it's going to go away. 00:17:43.93\00:17:45.23 We better gather more." 00:17:45.26\00:17:46.56 It seemed like no matter what God said, 00:17:46.59\00:17:47.86 there was always somebody that didn't really 00:17:47.93\00:17:50.23 believe what Moses said. 00:17:50.27\00:17:52.10 And so they said, "Oh, we're not going to have enough," 00:17:52.13\00:17:54.74 so they gathered extra. 00:17:54.77\00:17:56.34 The Bible says but when they finally meted it out, 00:17:56.37\00:17:58.04 they didn't have any extra. 00:17:58.07\00:17:59.57 Some thought, "Well, I'll leave more for others because I don't 00:17:59.61\00:18:01.54 want to take too much." 00:18:01.58\00:18:03.04 They had the same amount. 00:18:03.08\00:18:04.88 That's where it said, "He who gathered less had nothing over. 00:18:04.91\00:18:07.65 He who had gathered little had no lack. 00:18:07.68\00:18:09.92 Every man had gathered according to one's need." 00:18:09.95\00:18:12.15 Paul refers to this in 2 Corinthians 8, verse 13. 00:18:12.19\00:18:16.99 He's talking about sharing. 00:18:17.03\00:18:21.03 And he says, "For I do not mean that others should be eased 00:18:21.06\00:18:25.30 and you burdened." 00:18:25.33\00:18:27.00 I'm not saying you should work real hard and others just are 00:18:27.04\00:18:29.07 taken care of by the church. 00:18:29.10\00:18:30.81 "But there be an equality, that now at this time, 00:18:30.84\00:18:34.71 your abundance might supply their lack, 00:18:34.74\00:18:36.75 that their abundance may also supply your lack, 00:18:36.78\00:18:39.28 that there might be an equality. 00:18:39.31\00:18:41.32 As it is written, he who gathered much had nothing left 00:18:41.35\00:18:44.52 over, and he who gathered little had no gains." 00:18:44.55\00:18:46.59 So, here Paul is quoting from Exodus 16 in this passage. 00:18:46.62\00:18:51.96 But on Friday, what happened? 00:18:51.99\00:18:56.63 They were supposed to gather what we call the preparation 00:18:56.67\00:18:58.93 date, twice as much. 00:18:58.97\00:19:00.50 Every other day of the week if they hoarded it, 00:19:00.54\00:19:02.84 what happened the next day? 00:19:02.87\00:19:05.27 It stunk. 00:19:05.31\00:19:06.81 Now, you notice first of all God told them not to gather too 00:19:06.84\00:19:09.14 much, they didn't listen, some gathered too much. 00:19:09.18\00:19:10.98 Then God said, "Now, don't keep it overly, nothing--" 00:19:11.01\00:19:13.65 They didn't listen, some kept it over and it stunk. 00:19:13.68\00:19:16.22 Then God said, "Don't go out Sabbath looking for it," but 00:19:16.25\00:19:19.59 some went out looking for it. 00:19:19.62\00:19:21.99 And he said, "How long will you refuse to keep My commandments?" 00:19:22.02\00:19:25.96 One more thing, Pastor Ross, about the people who went out. 00:19:25.99\00:19:28.83 Now, I just mention this because, 00:19:28.86\00:19:30.80 you know, there are a few doctrines of devils out there. 00:19:30.83\00:19:33.64 And I've even heard some Sabbath-keeping ministers tell 00:19:33.67\00:19:36.97 people, they quote this phrase if you look in Exodus chapter 16 00:19:37.01\00:19:41.74 and in verse 29, he says, "See, the Lord has given you the 00:19:41.78\00:19:46.21 Sabbath, therefore he gives you on the sixth 00:19:46.25\00:19:48.32 day bread for two days. 00:19:48.35\00:19:50.09 Let every man remain in his place, 00:19:50.12\00:19:52.79 let no one go out of his place on the seventh day." 00:19:52.82\00:19:55.56 I've heard pastors take that verse and say you're not 00:19:55.59\00:19:58.09 supposed to go to church. 00:19:58.13\00:19:59.73 It says, "No man is supposed to go out of his place 00:19:59.76\00:20:01.86 on the seventh day." 00:20:01.90\00:20:03.50 That's not at all what it's talking about. 00:20:03.53\00:20:05.20 They were going out and gathering wood and they were 00:20:05.23\00:20:08.37 going out looking for manna. 00:20:08.40\00:20:10.07 He said, "Don't go out foraging on the Sabbath looking for manna 00:20:10.11\00:20:13.07 or looking for wood to build a fire. 00:20:13.11\00:20:14.78 You're supposed to have kindled your fire before sundown." 00:20:14.81\00:20:17.95 You notice it was not a sin for them to have a fire. 00:20:17.98\00:20:21.05 You could have a fire. 00:20:21.08\00:20:22.52 They were not to kindle a fire 'cause there was a lot of work 00:20:22.55\00:20:24.79 involved back then in kindling a fire. 00:20:24.82\00:20:26.69 Well, now you turn a knob. 00:20:26.72\00:20:28.16 He said get your fire going, don't kindle a fire. 00:20:28.19\00:20:30.56 They weren't told that they had to shiver all through the 00:20:30.59\00:20:32.69 Sabbath those cold winters in the desert. 00:20:32.73\00:20:35.93 They weren't to be kindling it. 00:20:35.96\00:20:38.40 And so, in our house in the wintertime, 00:20:38.43\00:20:40.14 we get the fire going before Sabbath. 00:20:40.17\00:20:41.90 We keep it going through the Sabbath, you understand? 00:20:41.94\00:20:46.41 That's very important. 00:20:46.44\00:20:47.74 So, you're going to hear people say, 00:20:47.78\00:20:49.14 I've actually heard it, you're not supposed to go out of your 00:20:49.18\00:20:51.58 home on the Sabbath, you just keep it at home. 00:20:51.61\00:20:53.52 Now, most of our Sabbath-keepers know better, 00:20:53.55\00:20:55.85 but I've actually heard that twisted. 00:20:55.88\00:20:58.32 And I've heard people say it's a sin to have a fire on a Sabbath. 00:20:58.35\00:21:04.39 And I remember hearing Jimmy Swaggart saying, 00:21:04.43\00:21:05.73 "Everybody who tries to keep the Sabbath when they drive to 00:21:05.76\00:21:08.66 church, they're hypocrites 'cause every time your spark 00:21:08.70\00:21:11.00 plug fires in your engine, you're kindling a 00:21:11.03\00:21:12.83 fire on the Sabbath day. 00:21:12.87\00:21:14.44 You are breaking the Sabbath when you drive to church." 00:21:14.47\00:21:17.07 So, you hear some really strange things on the range out there. 00:21:17.11\00:21:21.74 Jean: And of course, there's all kinds of traditions that 00:21:21.78\00:21:23.71 came with time, and Jesus addressed these when he was on 00:21:23.75\00:21:25.81 the earth because the Pharisees added all of these manmade 00:21:25.85\00:21:28.98 traditions and regulations to the Sabbath where it really 00:21:29.02\00:21:32.22 became a burden to the people. 00:21:32.25\00:21:34.26 That's not what the Sabbath is about. 00:21:34.29\00:21:36.36 It's not manmade traditions or regulations, 00:21:36.39\00:21:38.26 it's simply taking the Word of God as it is. 00:21:38.29\00:21:41.46 It's interesting to note at the end of that experience, 00:21:41.50\00:21:43.26 where God speaks to Moses about the children of Israel going out 00:21:43.30\00:21:45.73 to gather manna on the Sabbath, finally it 00:21:45.77\00:21:47.84 says they learnt their lesson. 00:21:47.87\00:21:49.84 This is verse 30 of Exodus chapter 16, 00:21:49.87\00:21:52.91 it says, "So the people rested on the seventh day." 00:21:52.94\00:21:55.01 They have learned sort of the hard way. 00:21:55.04\00:21:57.31 First of all, they went out to gather manna or some of them 00:21:57.35\00:21:59.85 went out to try and get, you know, 00:21:59.88\00:22:02.12 twice as much during the week and not on Friday, 00:22:02.15\00:22:05.52 and finally they learnt the lesson. 00:22:05.55\00:22:07.62 "All right, God means what He says. 00:22:07.66\00:22:09.29 Sabbath is indeed a blessing." 00:22:09.32\00:22:11.46 Now, there's a number of miracles associated with the 00:22:11.49\00:22:13.19 Sabbath and manna. 00:22:13.23\00:22:14.56 What happened if they got manna twice as much during the other 00:22:14.56\00:22:18.87 days of the week other than Friday morning? 00:22:18.90\00:22:21.27 It spoiled. 00:22:21.30\00:22:22.64 Whereas on Friday, a miracle occurred that the food not only 00:22:22.67\00:22:26.14 lasted on Friday, but it also lasted through the Sabbath. 00:22:26.17\00:22:28.88 And then another miracle on Sabbath, 00:22:28.91\00:22:30.81 there was no manna. 00:22:30.85\00:22:32.18 So, God made it pretty clear to the children of Israel which day 00:22:32.21\00:22:35.08 of the week was his day, and that day was a day of worship, 00:22:35.12\00:22:38.42 a day of rest, a day of blessing. 00:22:38.45\00:22:40.56 Doug: Amen. 00:22:40.59\00:22:41.92 While we're diffusing some of the misconceptions, 00:22:41.96\00:22:44.36 the idea that you're just supposed to stay in your tent. 00:22:44.39\00:22:47.30 Now, someone's going to read for me a verse in Leviticus 23:3, 00:22:47.36\00:22:50.80 is that you, Vicky? 00:22:50.83\00:22:52.37 All right, why don't you get ready for that? 00:22:52.40\00:22:54.14 I'm going to read to you Ezekiel 44:24, 00:22:54.17\00:22:57.44 "And they shall keep My laws, My statutes, 00:22:57.47\00:23:00.94 and all My appointed meetings, and they 00:23:00.98\00:23:04.98 shall hallow My Sabbaths." 00:23:05.01\00:23:06.95 So, is staying home on the Sabbath day keeping 00:23:06.98\00:23:10.59 the Sabbath day? 00:23:10.62\00:23:12.15 What does he call it? A meeting. 00:23:12.19\00:23:15.32 And you go ahead read your verse, 00:23:15.36\00:23:16.79 this I think will help nail that truth down. 00:23:16.83\00:23:18.46 Vicky: Leviticus 23:3, "Six days shall your work be done, 00:23:18.49\00:23:23.87 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of solemn rest, 00:23:23.90\00:23:27.00 a holy convocation. 00:23:27.04\00:23:28.70 You shall do no work on it. 00:23:28.74\00:23:30.47 It is the Sabbath of the Lord in all your dwellings." 00:23:30.51\00:23:32.81 Doug: That word "convocation" means assembly. 00:23:32.84\00:23:37.71 It was a time for them to convene. 00:23:37.75\00:23:40.05 It's where we get convention. 00:23:40.08\00:23:41.85 They were to come together and worship. 00:23:41.88\00:23:43.82 And I just read to you Ezekiel. 00:23:43.85\00:23:45.32 He said, "My appointed meetings." 00:23:45.35\00:23:46.65 They were to meet together before the Lord. 00:23:46.69\00:23:48.99 Of course, Jesus went to the synagogue. 00:23:49.02\00:23:50.99 You know what the synagogue means? 00:23:51.03\00:23:52.36 The gathering. 00:23:52.39\00:23:53.70 They would gather together. 00:23:53.73\00:23:55.00 He stood up to read the Scriptures. 00:23:55.03\00:23:56.33 So, I say that because Sabbath is a day for recreation, 00:23:56.36\00:24:01.27 some rest, but I know a lot of people that say, 00:24:01.30\00:24:04.01 "Instead of going to church and gathering together in worship," 00:24:04.04\00:24:06.47 they say, "I'm going to spend it, 00:24:06.51\00:24:08.28 you know, in my RV up by the lake." 00:24:08.31\00:24:10.45 And they say, "I'm going to spend it--you know, 00:24:10.48\00:24:13.65 I'm just going to camp by myself and be one with God." 00:24:13.68\00:24:15.92 And you know, I'm not trying to condemn people that do that, 00:24:15.95\00:24:18.32 but technically part of the Sabbath command is a holy 00:24:18.35\00:24:20.96 convocation, it is a time for us, 00:24:20.99\00:24:24.53 yes, to go to church, to come together, 00:24:24.56\00:24:26.90 to worship him. 00:24:26.93\00:24:28.20 There's something that happens when we 00:24:28.23\00:24:29.53 corporately come together. 00:24:29.56\00:24:31.07 Jean: And even in the New Testament, 00:24:31.10\00:24:32.40 we find that same principle where Paul writes the believers 00:24:32.43\00:24:34.77 and says, "Let us not forsake the assembling 00:24:34.80\00:24:37.11 of ourselves together." 00:24:37.14\00:24:38.81 And says, "Especially as we see that day approaching." 00:24:38.84\00:24:41.24 So, it's pretty clear that there was a gathering of believers 00:24:41.28\00:24:44.48 and that would be on the Sabbath to worship, 00:24:44.51\00:24:46.68 even in the New Testament. 00:24:46.72\00:24:48.08 That Paul is encouraging believers together 00:24:48.12\00:24:49.92 to gather to worship. 00:24:49.95\00:24:51.29 Doug: Now, they didn't have to gather. 00:24:51.32\00:24:52.65 I mean, you could gather days other than the Sabbath, 00:24:52.69\00:24:54.52 but certainly if there was an appointed day, 00:24:54.56\00:24:56.56 it would've been the holy day. 00:24:56.59\00:24:58.16 Thank you very much. 00:24:58.19\00:24:59.56 And I think--why don't we move on to the second here, 00:24:59.59\00:25:02.06 where it talks about two reasons for the Sabbath. 00:25:02.10\00:25:04.80 And Pastor Ross, you want to read the verses 00:25:04.83\00:25:07.64 there in Ezekiel? 00:25:07.67\00:25:09.00 Jean: Yes, Ezekiel chapter 20, 00:25:09.04\00:25:10.41 beginning in verse 12. 00:25:10.44\00:25:11.81 We're looking for reasons for keeping the Sabbath. 00:25:11.84\00:25:13.91 It says, "Moreover, so I gave them My Sabbaths to be a sign 00:25:13.94\00:25:17.01 between them and Me, that they might know that I am the Lord 00:25:17.05\00:25:20.88 that sanctifies them." 00:25:20.92\00:25:22.62 Now, it seems to note that the word used here 00:25:22.65\00:25:24.95 in Ezekiel 20:12 is sanctify. 00:25:24.99\00:25:27.52 The word used in Genesis chapter 2 with referencing the Sabbath 00:25:27.56\00:25:31.66 also is sanctified, means to set apart for a holy use. 00:25:31.69\00:25:35.66 So, the Sabbath is set apart from the rest of the week 00:25:35.70\00:25:39.37 for a special holy use. 00:25:39.40\00:25:41.34 Likewise the believer in Christ is to be set apart from the rest 00:25:41.37\00:25:45.37 of the world, those who don't believe. 00:25:45.41\00:25:48.44 We are set apart for a holy use. 00:25:48.48\00:25:50.75 Thus the Sabbath becomes a sign that we are set apart for God. 00:25:50.78\00:25:54.92 We are Christians, we believe the 00:25:54.95\00:25:56.75 Bible; we are following Christ. 00:25:56.79\00:25:58.82 Doug: Amen, now, someone is going to read 00:25:58.85\00:26:00.46 for us in just a moment Exodus 31:17. 00:26:00.49\00:26:03.63 Here's where we're talking about what does it mean about a sign? 00:26:03.66\00:26:08.16 I'm going to read first Deuteronomy 6, 00:26:08.20\00:26:11.27 verse 8, speaking of the commandments. 00:26:11.30\00:26:14.40 Now, God gives the Ten Commandments, 00:26:14.44\00:26:16.17 two chapters they're given in their entirety. 00:26:16.20\00:26:17.94 You know where they are? 00:26:17.97\00:26:21.08 Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5. 00:26:21.11\00:26:25.45 In the New Testament, Jesus gives half of the 00:26:25.48\00:26:28.15 Ten Commandments in one utterance when the 00:26:28.18\00:26:30.82 rich young ruler comes to Him. 00:26:30.85\00:26:32.59 But you don't have anywhere in the New Testament where they're 00:26:32.62\00:26:34.59 given all ten in sequence. 00:26:34.62\00:26:36.42 Here it says, "You shall bind them for a sign on your hand. 00:26:36.46\00:26:40.96 They will be frontlets between your eyes." 00:26:40.96\00:26:43.50 Where does the mark of a beast--the beast appear? 00:26:43.53\00:26:47.94 The hand and in the forehead. 00:26:47.97\00:26:49.30 Well, here it makes it sound that is the law of God 00:26:49.34\00:26:52.51 the mark of the beast? 00:26:52.54\00:26:54.68 Where's the seal of God appear? Forehead. 00:26:54.71\00:26:59.51 In Ezekiel 9, it talks about God will put a mark in the foreheads 00:26:59.55\00:27:04.05 of those who sigh and cry for all the sins, 00:27:04.09\00:27:06.42 and they're the saved. 00:27:06.45\00:27:07.76 In Ezekiel 9, the ones with the mark are the saved. 00:27:07.79\00:27:10.63 Just keep in mind in the forehead and in the hand means 00:27:10.66\00:27:12.79 in your thoughts and in your actions. 00:27:12.83\00:27:16.20 In the Hebrew mind, it--and the people who do not have the law 00:27:16.23\00:27:19.90 of God in their hands and in their head in the last days will 00:27:19.93\00:27:22.30 have the mark of the beast in their hands and their head. 00:27:22.34\00:27:24.34 But it was a sign. 00:27:24.37\00:27:26.24 And so, one of those signs in the middle of God's law, 00:27:26.27\00:27:28.41 I always like to illustrate this point, 00:27:28.44\00:27:32.91 I think it's very valid. 00:27:32.95\00:27:34.95 Sabbath is unique from the other Ten Commandments. 00:27:34.98\00:27:37.99 It is unique in that it is the longest of the Ten Commandments. 00:27:38.02\00:27:42.12 It's unique in that it is in the middle of the law. 00:27:42.16\00:27:45.16 It's unique in that it is dealing with the 00:27:45.19\00:27:48.63 dimension of time. 00:27:48.66\00:27:50.60 It is a commandment that says what you are to do 00:27:50.63\00:27:53.70 and you're not to do. 00:27:53.74\00:27:55.07 Some commandments simply say, "Thou shalt not." 00:27:55.10\00:27:57.07 The Sabbath says, "Thou shalt work. 00:27:57.11\00:27:59.71 Thou shalt not work on this day." 00:27:59.74\00:28:04.38 It's also unique in that it's the only commandment where you 00:28:04.41\00:28:07.72 find the word "holy." 00:28:07.75\00:28:09.52 And I think that's interesting because the temple in the Holy 00:28:09.55\00:28:13.62 Land, in the holy city, on the holy mount, 00:28:13.66\00:28:16.32 in the Holy of Holies, in the holy ark has the word "holy" one 00:28:16.36\00:28:19.93 time and it's the Sabbath command. 00:28:19.96\00:28:22.16 In the Sabbath command, you've got the seal of God. 00:28:22.20\00:28:24.90 A seal had the name, the title, the territory. 00:28:24.93\00:28:27.67 In this command, it says, "The Lord created heavens and earth." 00:28:27.70\00:28:32.54 His name, His title, creator, His territory, 00:28:32.57\00:28:35.68 heaven and earth. 00:28:35.71\00:28:37.18 It's a unique command that the devil especially hates. 00:28:37.21\00:28:40.52 And it's a sign. 00:28:40.55\00:28:42.22 Jean: Just to add to that sign, 00:28:42.25\00:28:43.55 not only is it a sign that it is the Lord that sanctifies us as 00:28:43.59\00:28:46.39 we're reading Ezekiel chapter 20, 00:28:46.42\00:28:48.36 verse 12, in Ezekiel 20:20 it tells us that not only is the 00:28:48.39\00:28:52.09 Sabbath a sign that the Lord sanctifies us, 00:28:52.13\00:28:54.60 but it's also a sign that God created us. 00:28:54.63\00:28:57.57 So, the Sabbath serves as a sign not only that we are God's, 00:28:57.60\00:29:00.94 but it also reminds us that God made us. 00:29:00.97\00:29:03.47 We are made in His image. 00:29:03.51\00:29:04.81 The true joy and happiness that a person can have is when we 00:29:04.84\00:29:07.21 recognize that God is our creator and 00:29:07.24\00:29:09.68 we worship Him as such. 00:29:09.71\00:29:11.15 The big issue in the last days if you read the book 00:29:11.18\00:29:13.82 of Revelation revolves around worship. 00:29:13.85\00:29:15.75 Who do we worship? 00:29:15.78\00:29:17.25 Do we worship the beast power of the last days, 00:29:17.29\00:29:19.15 or do we worship the creator? 00:29:19.19\00:29:21.29 Depending upon who we worship, well, 00:29:21.32\00:29:23.22 that depends whether we get the seal of God 00:29:23.26\00:29:25.49 or the mark of the beast. 00:29:25.53\00:29:27.13 So, worship is an important thing, 00:29:27.13\00:29:29.06 and the Sabbath is connected to worship. 00:29:29.10\00:29:32.17 Doug: Yeah, amen. 00:29:32.20\00:29:33.50 So, it's a sign of him creating us or recreating 00:29:33.54\00:29:36.81 us and sanctifying. 00:29:36.84\00:29:39.51 All of us need to be recreated, that's the new heart. 00:29:39.54\00:29:42.81 Old things are passed away, all things are made new. 00:29:42.84\00:29:45.28 And it's a sign that He can sanctify us. 00:29:45.31\00:29:49.35 He takes what is once sinful and He makes us holy. 00:29:49.38\00:29:52.92 Every Sabbath, we remember that. 00:29:52.95\00:29:54.82 Would we have the same problems we have in our culture today 00:29:54.86\00:29:57.59 with people believing that we've all evolved with no purpose if 00:29:57.63\00:30:00.56 we had been keeping the Sabbath? 00:30:00.60\00:30:04.90 I think the neglect of the Sabbath has made people forget 00:30:04.93\00:30:11.07 that He's the creator. 00:30:11.11\00:30:12.57 Says, "Keep the Sabbath, for in six days the Lord created." 00:30:12.61\00:30:17.25 He wants us to remember that. 00:30:17.28\00:30:18.75 All right, we're going to go on now with the day--Sabbath 00:30:18.78\00:30:22.28 is a day of equality. 00:30:22.32\00:30:25.09 And it starts out here, Pastor Ross, 00:30:25.12\00:30:27.99 I don't know if you want to read Deuteronomy 5, 00:30:28.02\00:30:29.82 verse 12 and 15 and-- 00:30:29.86\00:30:31.46 Jean: Yes, Deuteronomy chapter 5, beginning in verse 12, 00:30:31.49\00:30:34.83 it says, "Observe the Sabbath day to keep it holy as the Lord 00:30:34.86\00:30:38.47 God commanded you. 00:30:38.50\00:30:39.87 Six days you should labor and do all your work, 00:30:39.90\00:30:42.27 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. 00:30:42.30\00:30:45.11 In it, you should do no work, you, 00:30:45.14\00:30:47.51 nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, 00:30:47.54\00:30:51.05 nor your female servant, nor your ox, 00:30:51.08\00:30:53.21 nor your donkey, nor your cattle, 00:30:53.25\00:30:55.98 nor the stranger who is within your gates, 00:30:56.02\00:30:58.19 that your male servant and your female servant 00:30:58.22\00:31:00.86 may rest as well as you. 00:31:00.89\00:31:03.12 And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, 00:31:03.16\00:31:05.99 and the Lord Your God brought you out from there by a mighty 00:31:06.03\00:31:09.66 hand and by an outstretched arm. 00:31:09.70\00:31:12.07 Therefore the Lord Your God commanded you to keep 00:31:12.10\00:31:14.14 the Sabbath day." 00:31:14.17\00:31:16.24 Doug: Now, some read the Sabbath commandment 00:31:16.27\00:31:19.11 in Deuteronomy 5 and they say, "See, 00:31:19.14\00:31:21.01 this proves the Sabbath was only for the Jews." 00:31:21.04\00:31:23.58 He said, "See, I'm commanding you to keep it because 00:31:23.61\00:31:25.75 you were a slave." 00:31:25.78\00:31:27.25 Do you notice there's a difference between the rendering 00:31:27.28\00:31:29.75 of the Sabbath commandment in Deuteronomy from 00:31:29.78\00:31:32.45 what you find in Exodus? 00:31:32.49\00:31:34.56 In Deuteronomy, Moses is--the whole book of Deuteronomy is 00:31:34.59\00:31:37.96 Moses's closing sermon before he dies to the people of Israel. 00:31:37.99\00:31:41.53 It's sort of his last appeal. 00:31:41.56\00:31:43.80 He's paraphrasing and expounding on their experience. 00:31:43.83\00:31:47.00 So, here he stops and he expounds on the Sabbath. 00:31:47.04\00:31:49.74 He's not adding to it, he's telling them why it's especially 00:31:49.77\00:31:54.08 important for them to let their servants rest. 00:31:54.11\00:31:57.91 He said, "Don't forget you were a slave. 00:31:57.95\00:32:01.52 You need to let your servants rest." 00:32:01.55\00:32:03.92 And not only was it a day for equality for the servants, 00:32:03.95\00:32:07.59 he said, "Your children shall rest." 00:32:07.62\00:32:11.19 You know, one thing before I leave the idea of the servants, 00:32:11.23\00:32:15.90 any of you been to Israel? 00:32:15.93\00:32:18.33 Some of you have. 00:32:18.37\00:32:19.67 Did you notice that some of the elevators are 00:32:19.70\00:32:21.47 called Shabbat elevators? 00:32:21.50\00:32:23.41 In some of the hotels and places you stay, 00:32:23.44\00:32:25.64 they got what they call an elevator and then they 00:32:25.67\00:32:27.38 got a Shabbat elevator. 00:32:27.41\00:32:28.74 You know why? 00:32:28.78\00:32:30.21 Because for the Orthodox Jews, it was so important to them, 00:32:30.25\00:32:33.15 they don't want to even push a button. 00:32:33.18\00:32:35.98 They've got automated lights on the Sabbath. 00:32:36.02\00:32:38.72 If they go into an elevator and it's not a Sabbath elevator, 00:32:38.75\00:32:44.73 they will stand there and wait for a Gentile to come in 00:32:44.76\00:32:47.86 and push a floor. 00:32:47.93\00:32:49.36 Sabbath elevators, as soon as you go in, 00:32:49.40\00:32:51.20 it stops on every floor. 00:32:51.23\00:32:53.07 How many of you know what I'm saying is true? 00:32:53.10\00:32:55.34 When I first heard that, I thought, 00:32:55.37\00:32:56.81 "You're kidding me." 00:32:56.84\00:32:58.41 So they thought, "Push the button, that's work." 00:32:58.44\00:33:01.94 That to me was-- 00:33:01.98\00:33:03.31 Jean: But the irony in that, Pastor Doug, 00:33:03.35\00:33:04.95 is you could wait for a Gentile to come and press the button, 00:33:04.98\00:33:07.38 you'd be okay, but you're not supposed to press the button. 00:33:07.42\00:33:10.25 Whereas the Sabbath commandment says not only are you to rest on 00:33:10.29\00:33:13.05 the Sabbath, but your servants are to rest and even the 00:33:13.09\00:33:16.02 stranger that is within your gates. 00:33:16.06\00:33:18.56 So, that would be the Gentiles. 00:33:18.59\00:33:20.03 So, in their manmade traditions, even today they still to some 00:33:20.06\00:33:23.26 degree set aside the commandments given by God. 00:33:23.30\00:33:26.33 Doug: Yeah, and if your servant is supposed to rest, 00:33:26.37\00:33:28.64 with that in mind, what does that say about Sabbath-keepers 00:33:28.67\00:33:32.64 that decide, "We're not going to prepare our food in advance, 00:33:32.67\00:33:35.24 we're just going to all go out to dinner"? 00:33:35.28\00:33:38.68 Aren't you kind of like hiring someone to cook 00:33:38.71\00:33:40.38 for you and serve you? 00:33:40.42\00:33:42.55 Because you didn't for whatever reason want to make 00:33:42.58\00:33:45.05 preparations in advance. 00:33:45.09\00:33:46.92 So, I'd have a problem with that. 00:33:46.96\00:33:48.59 But it's not only servants that are protected in this 00:33:48.62\00:33:50.26 commandment, what else? 00:33:50.29\00:33:52.83 Your animals. 00:33:52.86\00:33:54.46 It says that your ox and your donkey, 00:33:54.46\00:33:57.40 and now is an ox a clean animal? 00:33:57.43\00:34:01.20 Yes, is a donkey a clean animal? 00:34:01.24\00:34:03.30 So, it's basically saying male, female, 00:34:03.34\00:34:06.01 son, daughter, male servant, female servant, 00:34:06.04\00:34:08.81 animals, clean animals, unclean animal, 00:34:08.84\00:34:12.61 any beast of burden. 00:34:12.65\00:34:13.98 Now, keep in mind back in Bible times, 00:34:14.02\00:34:15.85 some of those animals, they were--they were burdened down 00:34:15.88\00:34:20.72 with loads, they were pulling plows. 00:34:20.76\00:34:22.66 And God said they even must rest. 00:34:22.69\00:34:26.29 Now, there's some exceptions. 00:34:26.33\00:34:28.46 You know, in the early days of our church, 00:34:28.50\00:34:32.00 if you wanted to get to church, you had to either walk 20 miles 00:34:32.03\00:34:35.47 or you had to hook up the buggy to the horse and ride. 00:34:35.50\00:34:39.97 And so, you know, there--sometimes there 00:34:40.01\00:34:42.24 was the practicality of it. 00:34:42.28\00:34:43.88 But as far as possible, the regular beasts of burden were 00:34:43.91\00:34:45.98 being told that they should rest on the Sabbath day. 00:34:46.01\00:34:50.22 And someone's going to read a verse for us about that. 00:34:50.25\00:34:53.89 Proverbs 12:10, and just reminds us that--and it's not only 00:34:53.92\00:35:01.20 the--your son and your daughter and your servants 00:35:01.23\00:35:04.23 and your animals. 00:35:04.27\00:35:05.60 It says, "And the stranger within your gates." 00:35:05.63\00:35:08.20 Now, within your gates means within your home, 00:35:08.24\00:35:11.34 within your whatever your dominion is, 00:35:11.37\00:35:13.74 they should be resting and keeping it. 00:35:13.78\00:35:15.08 But go ahead, read Proverbs for us please. 00:35:15.11\00:35:17.25 female: Proverbs 12:10, "A righteous man regards the life 00:35:17.28\00:35:20.42 of his animal, but the tender mercies of 00:35:20.45\00:35:23.15 the wicked are cruel." 00:35:23.18\00:35:24.89 Doug: I'll tell you a quick story. 00:35:24.92\00:35:29.59 Years ago, a pastor was riding through Scotland, 00:35:29.62\00:35:32.59 this is in the 1800s, and he was doing some work in the area 00:35:32.63\00:35:36.43 for a few months. 00:35:36.46\00:35:37.77 And he noticed that every Sunday, 00:35:37.80\00:35:39.10 he saw all these donkeys in this field, 00:35:39.13\00:35:41.87 but they were disappearing the rest of the week, 00:35:41.90\00:35:43.51 he never saw them. 00:35:43.54\00:35:44.84 But Sunday, they were in the field. 00:35:44.87\00:35:46.21 And he finally stopped when he saw a man was there feeding the 00:35:46.24\00:35:49.14 donkey, he says, "I'm just curious," says, 00:35:49.18\00:35:50.81 "These donkeys are here every Sunday, 00:35:50.85\00:35:53.88 but they're gone the rest of the week. 00:35:53.92\00:35:55.22 What's with that?" 00:35:55.25\00:35:56.55 He said, "Well, these donkeys work down in the coal mines, 00:35:56.58\00:35:59.29 and of course Sunday we don't work, 00:35:59.32\00:36:02.76 but we have to bring them up. 00:36:02.79\00:36:04.43 Because," he says, "if they're in the dark of the mine all week 00:36:04.46\00:36:07.00 long, they go blind from never using their eyes." 00:36:07.03\00:36:11.50 Said, "They need to come up in the light at least once a week 00:36:11.53\00:36:14.04 or they go blind." 00:36:14.07\00:36:16.30 I think it's important that we also are exposed to the light 00:36:16.34\00:36:20.64 every Sabbath day. 00:36:20.68\00:36:22.18 And so it's a sign--when he says, 00:36:22.21\00:36:24.58 "It's a sign between Me and the children of Israel forever," is 00:36:24.61\00:36:27.35 it just the sign for the children of Israel? 00:36:27.38\00:36:29.92 Or does the Bible say, "If you are Christ's," 00:36:29.95\00:36:32.72 what's the rest of that? 00:36:32.75\00:36:35.26 "Then you are Abraham's seed. 00:36:35.29\00:36:37.36 He is not a Jew which is one outwardly, 00:36:37.39\00:36:39.83 but he is a Jew which is one inwardly." 00:36:39.86\00:36:42.40 And so, every Christian is grafted into these promises 00:36:42.43\00:36:45.47 where it's a sign between God and spiritual Israel as well 00:36:45.50\00:36:50.07 as literal Israel forever. 00:36:50.11\00:36:53.68 Jean: I'd also like to mention there where it says, 00:36:53.71\00:36:55.18 "And rest and be refreshed." 00:36:55.21\00:36:58.55 We need spiritually to be refreshed once a week. 00:36:58.58\00:37:01.75 We do it every day when we have our own worships, 00:37:01.78\00:37:04.29 but there's something special, there's a double portion of a 00:37:04.32\00:37:07.46 blessing that we find on the Sabbath spiritually speaking, 00:37:07.49\00:37:10.53 where we can be refreshed. 00:37:10.56\00:37:12.19 You know, Pastor Doug, I don't know what I'd do 00:37:12.23\00:37:14.13 if it wasn't for the Sabbath. 00:37:14.20\00:37:15.60 It seems like our whole lives revolve around getting ready for 00:37:15.63\00:37:18.37 the Sabbath, and then we look forward to the Sabbath during 00:37:18.40\00:37:21.17 the busyness of the week. 00:37:21.20\00:37:22.74 And not to have the Sabbath would just be a, 00:37:22.77\00:37:24.64 you know, when do you rest? 00:37:24.67\00:37:26.24 When do you take a break? 00:37:26.27\00:37:27.58 When do you walk away from all of the busyness that seems 00:37:27.61\00:37:30.21 to crowd you all week long and just spend time 00:37:30.25\00:37:32.38 meditating with God and worshipping? 00:37:32.41\00:37:35.22 It's so important for every Christian to 00:37:35.25\00:37:37.32 have that special time. 00:37:37.35\00:37:39.79 Doug: You know, it's almost like reading "Moby Dick" 00:37:39.82\00:37:41.86 where you don't have chapters frequently enough. 00:37:41.89\00:37:44.83 You know what I'm talking about? 00:37:44.86\00:37:46.93 We need chapters where you say, "I'm going to pause here." 00:37:46.96\00:37:50.40 And every week, God says, "Okay, closing the 00:37:50.43\00:37:52.17 chapter of that week. 00:37:52.20\00:37:53.50 You can rest before you delve into another chapter." 00:37:53.54\00:37:55.44 Some of you I can hear laughing, you read "Moby Dick." 00:37:55.47\00:37:57.61 All right, why don't you read, now we're going to go into 00:37:57.64\00:38:00.18 days of healing. 00:38:00.21\00:38:01.51 And there is some disputes about this, 00:38:01.54\00:38:02.94 but the Sabbath is a time for healing. 00:38:02.98\00:38:04.61 You want to read Matthew, Pastor Ross? 00:38:04.65\00:38:06.31 Jean: Yes, so in Matthew chapter 12, 00:38:06.35\00:38:07.65 beginning in verse 9, we have an incident that occurred on 00:38:07.68\00:38:09.88 the Sabbath with Jesus. 00:38:09.92\00:38:11.32 It says starting verse 9, "Now, when He had departed from there, 00:38:11.35\00:38:14.69 He went to their synagogue, and behold, 00:38:14.72\00:38:16.89 there was a man who had a withered hand. 00:38:16.93\00:38:18.89 And they asked Him saying, 'Is it lawful 00:38:18.93\00:38:21.10 to heal on the Sabbath?' 00:38:21.13\00:38:22.56 that they might accuse Him. 00:38:22.60\00:38:24.10 Then He said to them, 'What man is there among you who has one 00:38:24.13\00:38:27.94 sheep and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath will not lay 00:38:27.97\00:38:32.84 hold of it and lift it out? 00:38:32.87\00:38:34.84 Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep? 00:38:34.88\00:38:38.45 Therefore, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.' 00:38:38.48\00:38:41.95 Then He said to the man, 'Stretch out your hand.' 00:38:41.98\00:38:44.12 And he stretched it out 00:38:44.15\00:38:45.55 and it was restored as whole as the other." 00:38:45.59\00:38:49.59 Doug: Now, some people say, 00:38:49.62\00:38:50.93 "Well, you know, Jesus healed on the Sabbath, 00:38:50.96\00:38:52.56 and so He said, 'As long as you're doing good, that's okay. 00:38:52.59\00:38:57.90 You can do whatever you think is good.'" 00:38:57.93\00:39:00.04 Now, some people have taken the ox in the 00:39:00.07\00:39:02.64 ditch and they've abused that principle. 00:39:02.67\00:39:05.61 Jesus is saying if a person is physically sick and you can heal 00:39:05.64\00:39:08.81 them, obviously you should heal them. 00:39:08.84\00:39:11.51 I know a good Sabbath-keeping dentist, 00:39:11.55\00:39:13.31 and every now and then he'll get a call from someone who wakes 00:39:13.35\00:39:15.75 up in excruciating pain with a toothache, 00:39:15.78\00:39:17.82 and they say, "Oh, can you help me?" 00:39:17.85\00:39:19.55 He says, "Absolutely." 00:39:19.59\00:39:20.96 He won't charge them, but he'll open up his dentist lab, 00:39:20.99\00:39:23.63 he'll bring them in, and try and take care of whatever 00:39:23.66\00:39:26.09 the immediate pain is. 00:39:26.13\00:39:27.73 He might have to say, "Look, this will help you relieve the 00:39:27.76\00:39:29.60 pain until I can have my crew here and we can, 00:39:29.63\00:39:32.20 you know, do a procedure, operate on another day." 00:39:32.23\00:39:35.20 But he sees that these people are suffering, 00:39:35.24\00:39:37.44 and of course Jesus would relieve their suffering if 00:39:37.47\00:39:39.51 He had it in His power. 00:39:39.54\00:39:41.04 That's different than saying, "You know, 00:39:41.08\00:39:43.48 we're going to go out on Sabbath and do service 00:39:43.51\00:39:45.71 for our neighbors. 00:39:45.75\00:39:47.05 We're going to rake their leaves." 00:39:47.08\00:39:48.98 Is that the ox in the ditch? 00:39:49.02\00:39:51.69 I hear sometimes that people say, 00:39:51.72\00:39:53.15 "Well, we're going to take the kids out doing community service 00:39:53.19\00:39:55.89 on Sabbath 'cause it's better to do good. 00:39:55.92\00:39:57.83 So, we're going to wash our neighbor's windows." 00:39:57.86\00:39:59.79 I think that's abusing what the principle is, 00:39:59.83\00:40:03.50 you know what I'm saying? 00:40:03.53\00:40:04.83 And so, I think we need to just know Jesus. 00:40:04.87\00:40:07.10 Did Jesus heal people on the Sabbath? 00:40:07.14\00:40:10.67 Was He ever in the carpenter shop on the Sabbath? 00:40:10.71\00:40:14.94 But isn't making chairs good? 00:40:14.98\00:40:17.75 See, people couldn't abuse that word 00:40:17.78\00:40:19.45 "good" 'cause everything's good. 00:40:19.48\00:40:20.78 That's not what Christ is talking about. 00:40:20.82\00:40:23.49 We have another example of healing, 00:40:23.52\00:40:25.62 now did Jesus heal people on Sabbath? 00:40:25.65\00:40:28.62 Was that to say the Sabbath should not be kept, 00:40:28.66\00:40:31.63 or were the disputes about how the Sabbath should be kept? 00:40:31.66\00:40:35.40 Jesus had a lot of disputes about how the 00:40:35.43\00:40:38.00 Sabbath should be kept. 00:40:38.03\00:40:39.80 Never did He say it should no longer be kept. 00:40:39.83\00:40:42.84 That's a very important point. 00:40:42.87\00:40:44.34 You're going to find where people are arguing, 00:40:44.37\00:40:46.01 "Well, Jesus had to--He had to fight of all the legalistic 00:40:46.04\00:40:49.48 Pharisees who were trying to make people keep the Sabbath" 00:40:49.51\00:40:52.15 No, He was fighting off the legalism of keeping it 00:40:52.18\00:40:54.42 improperly or for the wrong reasons. 00:40:54.45\00:40:57.29 We have another one, Pastor Ross, in Luke. 00:40:57.32\00:40:59.19 Jean: Luke chapter 13, verse 10, 00:40:59.22\00:41:01.79 we have another Sabbath occurrence with Christ that 00:41:01.82\00:41:03.99 says, "Now He was teaching in one of the Synagogues on the 00:41:04.03\00:41:06.43 Sabbath, and behold, there was a woman who had a spirit 00:41:06.46\00:41:08.80 of infirmity for 18 years. 00:41:08.83\00:41:11.37 And she was bent over and could in no wise raise herself up. 00:41:11.40\00:41:14.80 But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to 00:41:14.84\00:41:19.14 her, 'Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.' 00:41:19.17\00:41:22.08 And He laid his hand upon her, and immediately 00:41:22.11\00:41:24.28 she was made straight and glorified God. 00:41:24.31\00:41:27.35 But the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation 00:41:27.38\00:41:30.32 because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath. 00:41:30.35\00:41:32.39 And he said to the crowd, 'There are six days on which a man 00:41:32.42\00:41:36.76 ought to work, therefore come and be healed on them, 00:41:36.79\00:41:41.00 and do not on the Sabbath day.' 00:41:41.03\00:41:43.40 Then the Lord then answered him and said, 'Hypocrite! 00:41:43.43\00:41:47.54 Does not each one of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey 00:41:47.57\00:41:51.17 from the stall and lead it away to water it? 00:41:51.21\00:41:53.84 So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham who Satan 00:41:53.88\00:41:58.01 has bound,'" think of it, "for 18 years be loosed from this 00:41:58.05\00:42:02.72 bond on the Sabbath?" 00:42:02.75\00:42:05.19 Doug: Yeah, Sabbath day is a day of blessings. 00:42:05.22\00:42:07.76 And you know, what a great day for a person to be set free is 00:42:07.79\00:42:11.06 what Jesus is saying. 00:42:11.09\00:42:13.76 And so, again you could just look--I mean, 00:42:13.80\00:42:16.87 it's hard for me to imagine the ruler of the synagogue, 00:42:16.90\00:42:19.63 how coldhearted he could be. 00:42:19.67\00:42:21.67 This woman is all bent over, she's hunched over, 00:42:21.70\00:42:23.17 maybe severe osteoporosis, I don't know what it was. 00:42:23.20\00:42:26.27 And in the presence of them all, Jesus does a mighty miracle. 00:42:26.31\00:42:29.08 They all knew her, she had had this problem 18 years, 00:42:29.11\00:42:31.31 she went to the same synagogue. 00:42:31.35\00:42:33.25 And they saw her hobble in, looking at the ground 'cause she 00:42:33.28\00:42:36.05 couldn't stand up, Jesus touches her, 00:42:36.08\00:42:37.69 and a miracle happens. 00:42:37.72\00:42:39.45 And instead of everybody just exploding in joy, 00:42:39.49\00:42:42.82 the ruler of the synagogue is wringing his hands and going, 00:42:42.86\00:42:45.39 "This is the Sabbath. 00:42:45.43\00:42:47.23 You shouldn't do this." 00:42:47.30\00:42:48.66 If I see a miracle like that, I'd just say, "Praise God." 00:42:48.70\00:42:50.90 God does miracles, He did it, and so you got to take 00:42:50.93\00:42:54.30 it up with the Lord. 00:42:54.34\00:42:55.67 But yeah, you know, the devil exposes. 00:42:55.70\00:42:59.71 And then we have what--now, there's a lot of examples, 00:42:59.74\00:43:02.78 we only have time for three. 00:43:02.81\00:43:04.25 We have another one in John 9, you want to read that? 00:43:04.28\00:43:08.02 Jean: Yes, another Sabbath miracle that Jesus performed, 00:43:08.05\00:43:10.12 it says, John chapter 9, beginning verse 14 if you're 00:43:10.15\00:43:12.79 following in your Bibles, "Now it was the Sabbath when 00:43:12.82\00:43:15.72 Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. 00:43:15.76\00:43:17.96 Then the Pharisees also asked him again how he had received 00:43:17.99\00:43:20.20 his sight, and he said to them, 'He put clay on my 00:43:20.23\00:43:22.70 eyes, and I washed and I see.' 00:43:22.73\00:43:24.50 Therefore, some of the Pharisees said, 'This man is not from God 00:43:24.53\00:43:27.97 because He does not keep the Sabbath.'" 00:43:28.00\00:43:32.64 Doug: Another example of the same misbalanced legalism, 00:43:32.67\00:43:38.38 where--and you know, finally they end up kicking this man 00:43:38.41\00:43:41.58 who's got his eyes open. 00:43:41.62\00:43:43.12 He's blind from birth, had never seen before, 00:43:43.15\00:43:46.25 he's healed, he can see, and the religious leaders even bring 00:43:46.29\00:43:51.26 in his parents, they said, "This is too--we can't 00:43:51.29\00:43:53.36 believe, this is too much. 00:43:53.40\00:43:54.66 Is this actually your son?" "This is our son." 00:43:54.73\00:43:56.30 "He was born blind?" "He was born blind." 00:43:56.33\00:43:58.47 "Well, how does he see?" 00:43:58.50\00:43:59.93 They said, "Well, don't ask us, ask him." 00:44:00.04\00:44:01.34 'Cause they were afraid to get kicked out of 00:44:01.37\00:44:02.70 the synagogue, excommunicated. 00:44:02.74\00:44:04.87 And the young man's got very good perception, 00:44:04.91\00:44:07.24 he said, "This is amazing to me that you're asking 00:44:07.28\00:44:10.71 who this man is from. 00:44:10.75\00:44:13.55 God hears the prayers of the righteous through the Lord. 00:44:13.58\00:44:18.95 Through the power of God, He has opened my eyes. 00:44:18.99\00:44:21.86 It's never been heard of since the history of man, 00:44:21.89\00:44:23.89 someone born blind should have their sight restored." 00:44:23.93\00:44:26.09 And he finally says, "Look, how He did it, 00:44:26.13\00:44:28.86 I can't tell you everything about it. 00:44:28.90\00:44:30.37 All I know is I was blind and now I see." 00:44:30.40\00:44:34.17 And they got upset at him and they ended up kicking him out 00:44:34.20\00:44:36.94 of the synagogue. 00:44:36.97\00:44:38.27 Jean: I like what he says, Pastor Doug, 00:44:38.31\00:44:39.74 they ask him again, "Now tell us, 00:44:39.77\00:44:41.31 how did this happen?" 00:44:41.34\00:44:42.64 And he says, "Well, I told you already. 00:44:42.68\00:44:43.98 Do you want me to tell you again so you can be disciples?" 00:44:44.01\00:44:46.68 Oh, they got very upset. 00:44:46.72\00:44:48.02 Doug: Yeah, that's when they kicked him out of the synagogue. 00:44:48.05\00:44:50.45 Jean: You know, it's interesting to note that the 00:44:50.49\00:44:53.09 Bible, at least in the gospels, we have seven occurrences 00:44:53.12\00:44:55.42 of Sabbath miracles that Jesus performed. 00:44:55.46\00:44:57.93 It's always nice when these things come in sevens, 00:44:57.96\00:45:00.53 the perfect number. 00:45:00.56\00:45:01.83 But the Bible records for us seven Sabbath miracles. 00:45:01.86\00:45:04.27 We've looked at a few of them, but there's some other very 00:45:04.30\00:45:06.63 significant Sabbath miracles. 00:45:06.67\00:45:08.14 It's an interesting study sometime to look up all of the 00:45:08.17\00:45:10.47 miracles Jesus performed on the Sabbath. 00:45:10.51\00:45:12.37 Doug: And this is one of the reasons Christ made that 00:45:12.41\00:45:14.58 statement that the Sabbath was made for man, 00:45:14.61\00:45:16.81 not man for the Sabbath. 00:45:16.85\00:45:18.25 God did not create the Sabbath day and then 00:45:18.28\00:45:20.52 create man to observe it. 00:45:20.55\00:45:22.02 God created man, and then created the Sabbath day 00:45:22.05\00:45:25.12 for it to be a blessing for man. 00:45:25.15\00:45:27.49 And so, they had turned the Sabbath day into a burden, 00:45:27.52\00:45:30.53 where it's supposed to be a blessing. 00:45:30.56\00:45:31.86 And He says, "You've got the whole point of it backwards." 00:45:31.89\00:45:35.30 Last section, we'll probably just have a couple minutes 00:45:35.33\00:45:37.30 to get some of this, Sabbath rest even for the land. 00:45:37.33\00:45:40.40 And maybe you want to read Leviticus 25:1 00:45:40.44\00:45:44.07 to 7 there for us. 00:45:44.11\00:45:45.41 Jean: Leviticus chapter 25, beginning in verse 1, 00:45:45.44\00:45:47.28 it says, "And the Lord spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, 00:45:47.31\00:45:49.54 saying, 'Speak to the children of Israel and say to them, 00:45:49.58\00:45:52.11 "When you come into the land that I will give you, 00:45:52.15\00:45:54.75 then the land shall keep a Sabbath to the Lord. 00:45:54.78\00:45:58.29 Six years you should sow your field, 00:45:58.32\00:46:01.56 six years you shall prune your vineyard and gather its fruit. 00:46:01.59\00:46:04.53 But the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath of solemn rest for 00:46:04.56\00:46:08.23 the land, a Sabbath to the Lord. 00:46:08.26\00:46:10.87 You shall neither sow your field nor prune your vineyard. 00:46:10.90\00:46:14.44 What grows of its own according to the harvest you may not reap, 00:46:14.47\00:46:17.97 nor gather the grapes of your unintended vine, 00:46:18.01\00:46:22.48 for it is a year of rest for the land. 00:46:22.51\00:46:24.95 And the Sabbath produce of the land shall be food for you, 00:46:24.98\00:46:27.52 for you and for your male servants, 00:46:27.55\00:46:30.32 female servants, for your hired men, 00:46:30.35\00:46:32.95 for the stranger who dwells with you, 00:46:32.99\00:46:34.76 for your livestock and for the beast that are in the land. 00:46:34.79\00:46:37.56 All its produce shall be their food."'" 00:46:37.59\00:46:41.33 Doug: Now, you know, there's no record that I can think of, 00:46:41.36\00:46:44.83 you might correct me, where it shows 00:46:44.87\00:46:46.20 them actually observing this. 00:46:46.23\00:46:48.24 Most of the time, they neglected it. 00:46:48.27\00:46:50.61 They would go out and harvest. 00:46:50.64\00:46:52.44 They would were afraid God was saying, 00:46:52.47\00:46:53.78 "I want you to live by faith that year. 00:46:53.81\00:46:55.81 Whatever grows volunteer, you can eat. 00:46:55.84\00:46:59.15 Don't go harvest it, but it's for everybody, 00:46:59.18\00:47:01.45 the man, your servants, your animals. 00:47:01.48\00:47:02.78 But you're going to rest that year from the farming. 00:47:02.82\00:47:05.85 Just trust Me." 00:47:05.89\00:47:07.66 And most years, they neglected that commandment. 00:47:07.69\00:47:12.49 The reason you know that is you look in 2 Chronicles and it says 00:47:12.53\00:47:16.03 in verse 19, I'll start with 2 Chronicles chapter 36, 00:47:16.06\00:47:20.00 verse 19, "Then they burned the house of God, 00:47:20.04\00:47:23.54 they broke down the wall of Jerusalem, 00:47:23.57\00:47:25.17 they burned all its palaces with fire, 00:47:25.21\00:47:27.14 they destroyed all its precious possessions. 00:47:27.18\00:47:29.38 And those who escaped from the sortie carried away to Babylon, 00:47:29.41\00:47:32.65 where they were to be servants to him and his sons until the 00:47:32.68\00:47:35.05 rule of the king of Persia to fulfill the Word of the Lord by 00:47:35.08\00:47:38.82 the mouth of Jeremiah until the land has enjoyed her Sabbaths. 00:47:38.85\00:47:43.19 As long as she laid desolate, she kept Sabbath 00:47:43.22\00:47:47.03 to fulfill 70 years." 00:47:47.03\00:47:48.93 So, God was saying, "Look, you would not let 00:47:48.96\00:47:51.30 the land keep Sabbath. 00:47:51.33\00:47:52.63 It's going to have an enforced Sabbath for 70 years." 00:47:52.67\00:47:56.40 Something else I think is interesting here is while the 00:47:56.44\00:47:59.44 land was desolate, it was keeping Sabbath. 00:47:59.47\00:48:02.94 What's the condition of the world when Jesus comes 00:48:02.98\00:48:05.15 back for the 1,000 years? 00:48:05.18\00:48:07.32 It's desolate, and so, the earth is keeping a 1,000 year, 00:48:07.35\00:48:11.89 a millennial Sabbath while we are living and reigning 00:48:11.92\00:48:13.79 with Christ in heaven. 00:48:13.82\00:48:16.46 Now, they also had that same law for servants as well, 00:48:16.49\00:48:19.96 Pastor Ross, in Exodus 21. 00:48:20.00\00:48:21.50 Jean: Exodus chapter 21, beginning in verse 1, 00:48:21.53\00:48:23.80 it says, "Now these are the judgments which 00:48:23.83\00:48:26.33 shall set before them. 00:48:26.37\00:48:27.70 You shall buy--if you shall buy a Hebrew servant, 00:48:27.74\00:48:30.07 he shall serve six years, and in the seventh he shall 00:48:30.11\00:48:33.54 go out free and pay nothing." 00:48:33.58\00:48:36.95 Doug: Yeah, and so, you know, all through the Bible we see 00:48:36.98\00:48:38.98 these patterns of six you work, one you rest. 00:48:39.01\00:48:43.15 They not only have a Sabbath every seventh year, 00:48:43.18\00:48:46.69 but after seven sevens, they have a special Sabbath year that 00:48:46.72\00:48:52.36 was called the year of what? 00:48:52.39\00:48:53.93 Jubilee, and so, their whole economy was 00:48:53.96\00:48:57.20 based upon believing that God would supply. 00:48:57.23\00:49:00.14 And that was a time, the Jubilee, 00:49:00.17\00:49:02.04 when they would not only release slaves, 00:49:02.07\00:49:03.67 they would forgive debts. 00:49:03.71\00:49:05.94 And all of these I think are pointing to the ultimate 00:49:05.97\00:49:08.04 Sabbath, when Jesus comes. 00:49:08.08\00:49:09.51 Now, we don't know the date of Christ's coming, 00:49:09.54\00:49:14.32 but we do know when the time is near, 00:49:14.35\00:49:16.42 and you can see a pattern in the Bible where a day with the Lord 00:49:16.45\00:49:20.46 is like 1,000 years and 1,000 years like a day. 00:49:20.49\00:49:23.66 And for 6,000 years from the time of Adam, 00:49:23.69\00:49:28.20 you add up the ages, it's approximately 6,000 years, 00:49:28.23\00:49:32.47 2,000 years from Adam to Abraham, 00:49:32.50\00:49:36.07 the age of the patriarchs, 2,000 years from Abraham to Christ was 00:49:36.10\00:49:40.14 the age of Israel, the Jews, 2,000 years from Christ to our 00:49:40.18\00:49:43.88 present day is the age of the church or spiritual Israel. 00:49:43.91\00:49:46.95 Then 1,000 years like a Sabbath we live and reign with the Lord. 00:49:46.98\00:49:50.65 We're living right about Friday afternoon right now. 00:49:50.69\00:49:55.39 But do you notice the pattern? 00:49:55.42\00:49:57.26 Six days you would--six years you would farm your land, 00:49:57.29\00:50:00.36 the seventh you'd let it rest. 00:50:00.40\00:50:01.66 For 6,000 years, Jesus sowed the seed of the gospel. 00:50:01.70\00:50:04.30 How is he pictured coming in Revelation? 00:50:04.33\00:50:06.70 To harvest. He's got a sickle. 00:50:06.74\00:50:09.57 And at the--after six years, you'd let your servant go free. 00:50:09.60\00:50:13.14 When Jesus comes, those who've been captive to the devil, 00:50:13.17\00:50:15.71 they get their glorified bodies, there's a liberation, 00:50:15.74\00:50:18.51 so all these things almost find their fulfillment in a picture 00:50:18.55\00:50:21.35 of the Second Coming. 00:50:21.38\00:50:23.02 Jean: Absolutely, we'd like to remind our friends, those 00:50:23.05\00:50:25.02 who are watching as we 00:50:25.05\00:50:26.35 near the end of our time, about [speaking foreign language] 00:52:05.32\00:52:09.29 Doug: We are all part of the family of God. 00:52:09.32\00:52:11.46 This is what you've heard each of our friends just say. 00:52:11.49\00:52:13.90 Hi, we're here in Papua New Guinea, 00:52:13.93\00:52:16.90 where the people speak over 800 different languages. 00:52:16.93\00:52:19.87 In fact, this is the most language diverse place 00:52:19.90\00:52:22.40 in the entire world. 00:52:22.44\00:52:24.57 The reason for that is because of the topography of this 00:52:24.61\00:52:28.11 country with the tall mountains, steep ravines, 00:52:28.14\00:52:31.08 deep gorges, and rushing rivers. 00:52:31.11\00:52:32.95 Over the millennia as the country was settled, 00:52:32.98\00:52:36.02 the different people and tribes were isolated by the terrain. 00:52:36.05\00:52:39.19 So, they evolved their own very distinct languages. 00:52:39.22\00:52:42.26 When people cannot communicate, sometimes 00:52:42.29\00:52:45.03 it causes misunderstandings. 00:52:45.06\00:52:46.86 So, the people in New Guinea have overcome that by speaking 00:52:46.90\00:52:49.76 a common pigeon English. 00:52:49.80\00:52:51.93 [speaking foreign language] 00:52:51.97\00:52:55.17 Doug: It's a very beautiful dialect that combines some 00:52:55.20\00:52:57.44 German, some English words, and some of the tribal words. 00:52:57.47\00:53:01.18 [speaking foreign language] 00:53:01.21\00:53:06.55 Doug: You can read in the Bible in Genesis chapter 11 00:53:06.58\00:53:08.45 there was once a time when all the world spoke one language, 00:53:08.48\00:53:12.22 but then men began to rebel against God. 00:53:12.25\00:53:14.42 They started to build a tower as a monument to manmade salvation 00:53:14.46\00:53:18.09 and manmade worship. 00:53:18.13\00:53:20.30 It's better known as the Tower of Babel. 00:53:20.33\00:53:22.66 Matter of fact, after God confused the languages, 00:53:22.70\00:53:25.60 people started babbling, which is where we get the word. 00:53:25.63\00:53:28.64 For thousands of years, this confusion of tongues caused all 00:53:28.67\00:53:32.11 kinds of problems in communication, 00:53:32.14\00:53:34.04 even wars were fought. 00:53:34.08\00:53:35.98 But then in Acts chapter 2 in the upper room, 00:53:36.01\00:53:39.11 God did something extraordinary to reverse the curse of the 00:53:39.15\00:53:42.02 confusion of tongues. 00:53:42.05\00:53:44.15 He poured out the Holy Spirit and Jesus did what he promised. 00:53:44.19\00:53:47.29 He said, "You will speak with other tongues." 00:53:47.32\00:53:50.79 Mark chapter 16, the disciples were supernaturally given the 00:53:50.83\00:53:54.36 ability to communicate in many different tongues 00:53:54.40\00:53:57.10 the good news of God. 00:53:57.13\00:53:58.77 Throughout the Bible, we learn that sin causes division. 00:53:58.80\00:54:01.57 On the other hand, God is love, and so when we're filled with 00:54:01.60\00:54:05.74 the Spirit of God, we naturally have love for one another. 00:54:05.77\00:54:08.51 This is the big command in the Bible that we 00:54:08.54\00:54:10.78 should love one another. 00:54:10.81\00:54:12.11 Jesus's prayer for his people in John 17 is, 00:54:12.15\00:54:14.62 "Father, that they may love each other and be 00:54:14.65\00:54:17.22 one even as We are one." 00:54:17.25\00:54:19.52 Paul says in the book of 1 Corinthians that we're many 00:54:19.55\00:54:22.72 different parts, but we are one body. 00:54:22.76\00:54:25.73 And so this is God's plan, that we might all be one and speak 00:54:25.76\00:54:29.63 the language of heaven. 00:54:29.66\00:54:31.33 So, if we have the Spirit of God, 00:54:31.37\00:54:33.20 we will have the love of God because love is the language 00:54:33.23\00:54:36.00 of God, and we will all be of one family. 00:54:36.04\00:54:40.04 all: God loves you! 00:54:40.08\00:54:41.74 ¤¤¤ 00:54:41.84\00:54:51.79 ¤¤¤ 00:54:51.82\00:54:55.46 Diana
