Let's face it, it's not always easy to understand 00:00:11.91\00:00:14.91 everything you read in the Bible. 00:00:14.91\00:00:16.88 With over 700,000 words contained in 66 books, 00:00:16.88\00:00:20.55 the Bible can generate a lot of questions. 00:00:20.55\00:00:23.18 To get biblical straightforward answers, 00:00:23.18\00:00:25.52 call into Bible Answers Live, 00:00:25.52\00:00:27.32 a live nationwide call-in radio program 00:00:27.32\00:00:29.96 where you can talk to Pastor Doug Batchelor 00:00:29.96\00:00:32.33 and ask him your most difficult Bible questions. 00:00:32.33\00:00:34.83 For times and stations in your area 00:00:34.83\00:00:36.97 or to listen to answers online, 00:00:36.97\00:00:38.87 visit Bal.AmazingFacts.org. 00:00:38.87\00:00:44.14 Friends, are you afraid of heights? 00:00:55.68\00:00:57.32 If so, you might want to look away right now. 00:00:57.32\00:01:00.39 One of the most famous attractions 00:01:00.39\00:01:02.06 in the San Francisco Bay area 00:01:02.06\00:01:03.89 is the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. 00:01:03.89\00:01:06.66 While this world famous bridge was named 00:01:06.66\00:01:08.70 as one of the seven wonders of the modern world. 00:01:08.70\00:01:11.27 Few people know the story of the brave men 00:01:11.27\00:01:13.30 who were involved in its construction 00:01:13.30\00:01:15.17 and also known as the Half Way to Hell Club. 00:01:15.17\00:01:19.14 Designed by a group of visionary engineers 00:01:19.14\00:01:21.51 at 4,200 feet from end to end, the Golden Gate Bridge 00:01:21.51\00:01:24.91 was at one time the longest suspension bridge in the world. 00:01:24.91\00:01:28.98 During its construction from 1933 to 1937, 00:01:28.98\00:01:32.75 the Golden Gate Bridge 00:01:32.75\00:01:33.99 had one of the best safety construction records 00:01:33.99\00:01:36.16 of any project during that time. 00:01:36.16\00:01:38.56 Keep in mind, they would factor in 00:01:38.56\00:01:40.43 and calculate that one man would die 00:01:40.43\00:01:42.63 for every million dollars that was spent. 00:01:42.63\00:01:44.67 So with a budget of $35 million, 00:01:44.67\00:01:47.24 they knew that loss of life would be unacceptable. 00:01:47.24\00:01:50.11 This is why the chief engineer Joseph B Strauss 00:01:50.11\00:01:53.07 was absolutely adamant 00:01:53.07\00:01:54.34 about using the most rigorous safety precautions 00:01:54.34\00:01:57.18 that it ever been used in bridge building. 00:01:57.18\00:01:59.58 He had a local manufacturer of safety equipment, 00:01:59.58\00:02:02.32 designed special headgear that he insisted be worn 00:02:02.32\00:02:04.89 on every job. 00:02:04.89\00:02:05.99 This became the prototype for the modern hard hat 00:02:05.99\00:02:08.76 worn for the first time ever, 00:02:08.76\00:02:10.56 but the safety precautions went even farther. 00:02:10.56\00:02:13.16 Strauss provided a special hand and face cream 00:02:13.16\00:02:15.76 to protect their skin from the cold biting wind 00:02:15.76\00:02:18.67 and glare free goggles to protect their eyes. 00:02:18.67\00:02:21.44 In addition, they also ate a special diet 00:02:21.44\00:02:23.97 to help ward off dizziness 00:02:23.97\00:02:25.64 when they were working at those epic heights. 00:02:25.64\00:02:27.81 But the most conspicuous safety precaution 00:02:27.81\00:02:30.35 was a gigantic net 00:02:30.35\00:02:31.91 that was suspended from end to end 00:02:31.91\00:02:33.82 under the entire construction area 00:02:33.82\00:02:35.98 of the Golden Gate Bridge. 00:02:35.98\00:02:37.99 In fact, during construction, 00:02:37.99\00:02:40.29 this net saved the lives of 19 men 00:02:40.29\00:02:43.46 who later became known as the Half Way to Hell Club. 00:02:43.46\00:02:47.23 Now you need to keep in mind, these were some of the most 00:02:47.23\00:02:49.26 dangerous construction conditions 00:02:49.26\00:02:50.97 you can imagine. 00:02:50.97\00:02:52.33 The wind was constantly blowing. 00:02:52.33\00:02:54.87 They were walking around on iron 00:02:54.87\00:02:56.74 that sometimes had ice from the freezing fog. 00:02:56.74\00:02:59.91 In places, they were over 700 feet above the icy waters. 00:02:59.91\00:03:04.95 Yet, the men coming from all walks of life 00:03:04.95\00:03:07.08 were willing to take these risks 00:03:07.08\00:03:09.05 because it was during The Great Depression 00:03:09.05\00:03:11.25 and they would get paid up to $11 a day 00:03:11.25\00:03:13.79 which was a fortune back then. 00:03:13.79\00:03:16.39 One of the other benefits of the net 00:03:16.39\00:03:18.93 was they discovered that the men 00:03:18.93\00:03:20.36 were much more courageous 00:03:20.36\00:03:21.63 even though they were walking high on those slippery surfaces 00:03:21.63\00:03:24.90 because they knew there was a mechanism 00:03:24.90\00:03:26.53 to protect them if they should fall, 00:03:26.53\00:03:28.67 this gave them the confidence and the courage to press on 00:03:28.67\00:03:31.57 and get the bridge built in record time. 00:03:31.57\00:03:33.94 You know, friends, as Christians 00:03:33.94\00:03:35.34 we have a great work to do. 00:03:35.34\00:03:37.01 The Bible tells us that we get to participate with Jesus 00:03:37.01\00:03:40.22 in building a bridge that connects heaven and earth, 00:03:40.22\00:03:43.49 and there are dangers along the way. 00:03:43.49\00:03:45.42 The devil would like to paralyze us with fear 00:03:45.42\00:03:47.96 that we might fall or make a mistake, 00:03:47.96\00:03:50.16 but we know that Jesus has provided a safety net for us 00:03:50.16\00:03:53.33 and we don't have to be afraid. 00:03:53.33\00:03:54.76 We can press on with confidence 00:03:54.76\00:03:56.56 because the promise is in the Book of Jude 24, 00:03:56.56\00:03:59.30 he is able to keep us from falling. 00:03:59.30\00:04:01.94 But sometimes we make mistakes, 00:04:01.94\00:04:03.87 still don't be discouraged, friends, 00:04:03.87\00:04:05.74 if you read in 1 John 2:1, the Bible says, 00:04:05.74\00:04:09.28 "If we fall, if we sin, 00:04:09.28\00:04:11.38 we have an advocate with the Father Jesus Christ." 00:04:11.38\00:04:14.22 So let's press on together and build that bridge 00:04:14.22\00:04:16.52 with Christ. 00:04:16.52\00:04:17.59 Hello, and welcome to yet another edition 00:04:50.02\00:04:51.79 of the Sabbath School Study Hour. 00:04:51.79\00:04:53.32 My name is Shawn Brummund, and it is always my pleasure 00:04:53.32\00:04:56.12 to be able to introduce one of my favorite studies 00:04:56.12\00:04:58.73 which is the Sabbath School Study Hour. 00:04:58.73\00:05:01.26 I want to extend a special welcome to all those 00:05:01.26\00:05:04.17 who are watching not only across America 00:05:04.17\00:05:06.17 but from the different countries across the world, 00:05:06.17\00:05:08.47 we are just so thankful 00:05:08.47\00:05:09.57 that you have decided to join us, 00:05:09.57\00:05:11.27 and I know that you are going to be blessed and enriched 00:05:11.27\00:05:14.51 because of the study that we'll be looking at here 00:05:14.51\00:05:16.71 today in the Granite Bay Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:05:16.71\00:05:20.15 right here in Sacramento, California, 00:05:20.15\00:05:22.88 United States of America. 00:05:22.88\00:05:25.05 I am going to be introducing here 00:05:25.05\00:05:27.66 our special book that we've been looking at 00:05:27.66\00:05:29.46 for the last several weeks now 00:05:29.46\00:05:31.06 as we're finishing up this quarterly 00:05:31.06\00:05:32.63 by the end of September, 00:05:32.63\00:05:34.23 and it's entitled the Book of Acts. 00:05:34.23\00:05:36.63 Now today we're going to be looking at a very special study 00:05:36.63\00:05:39.10 and a very special topic. 00:05:39.10\00:05:40.84 Powerful topic in which Paul is finding himself 00:05:40.84\00:05:43.94 on his third and final missionary 00:05:43.94\00:05:46.71 tour or trip as we might want to call it, 00:05:46.71\00:05:50.21 and so there's just a whole lot of powerful things 00:05:50.21\00:05:52.31 that are happening there, and I look forward to studying 00:05:52.31\00:05:54.98 and finding what we will discover together. 00:05:54.98\00:05:58.62 Before we invite our singers out together though, 00:05:58.62\00:06:00.96 I want to offer you our special free gift that we always offer 00:06:00.96\00:06:04.59 every Sabbath School Study Hour, 00:06:04.59\00:06:06.06 and 00:06:21.44\00:06:25.21 Now for those of you 00:06:25.21\00:06:26.31 who are more digitally oriented, 00:06:26.31\00:06:27.92 and you would like to have a copy 00:06:27.92\00:06:29.42 of that particular gift offer, we do offer it through text. 00:06:29.42\00:06:35.12 And so you can actually receive that 00:06:35.12\00:06:36.79 in digital download on your phone, 00:06:36.79\00:06:38.49 all we're going through 00:06:57.78\00:06:59.61 not only today but in the next month 00:06:59.61\00:07:01.95 or so as we continue to study the Book of Acts, 00:07:01.95\00:07:04.35 we want to offer that 00:07:04.35\00:07:05.45 with a digital download as well. 00:07:05.45\00:07:07.72 Again, you can go on your phone, your laptop, 00:07:07.72\00:07:09.46 and other digital devices and simply go to 00:07:23.20\00:07:25.67 of the Book of Acts and the quarterly study 00:07:25.67\00:07:27.38 that we're looking at. 00:07:27.38\00:07:28.48 Now if you're one of those people 00:07:28.48\00:07:29.91 that likes to have a paper copy, 00:07:29.91\00:07:32.21 that we always encourage you to find your closest local 00:07:32.21\00:07:34.68 Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:07:34.68\00:07:36.38 and as you go to visit them on a Saturday morning, 00:07:36.38\00:07:39.59 you'll find different services taking place 00:07:39.59\00:07:42.06 and 99% of the time they'll have 00:07:42.06\00:07:44.86 a extra 00:08:05.08\00:08:10.29 O words with heav'nly comfort fraught 00:08:10.29\00:08:16.56 Whate'er I do, where'er I be 00:08:16.56\00:08:23.03 Still 'tis God's hand that leadeth me 00:08:23.03\00:08:30.11 He leadeth me, He leadeth me 00:08:30.11\00:08:35.61 By His own hand He leadeth me 00:08:35.61\00:08:42.22 His faithful foll'wer I would be 00:08:42.22\00:08:47.62 For by His hand He leadeth me 00:08:47.62\00:08:55.03 Sometimes 'mid scenes of deepest gloom 00:08:55.03\00:09:00.30 Sometimes where Eden's bowers bloom 00:09:00.30\00:09:06.68 By waters still, o'er troubled sea 00:09:06.68\00:09:13.15 Still 'tis His hand that leadeth me 00:09:13.15\00:09:20.22 He leadeth me, He leadeth me 00:09:20.22\00:09:25.53 By His own hand He leadeth me 00:09:25.53\00:09:31.70 His faithful foll'wer I would be 00:09:31.70\00:09:37.01 For by His hand He leadeth me 00:09:37.01\00:09:44.18 And when my task on earth is done 00:09:44.18\00:09:49.45 When by Thy grace the vict'ry's won 00:09:49.45\00:09:55.79 E'en death's cold wave I will not flee 00:09:55.79\00:10:02.30 Since God through Jordan leadeth me 00:10:02.30\00:10:09.24 He leadeth me, He leadeth me 00:10:09.24\00:10:14.61 By His own hand He leadeth me 00:10:14.61\00:10:21.12 His faithful foll'wer I would be 00:10:21.12\00:10:26.79 For by His hand He leadeth me 00:10:26.79\00:10:34.63 At this time, Pastor Brummund will have our opening prayer. 00:10:37.63\00:10:40.47 Father in heaven, 00:10:43.51\00:10:44.77 we are so thankful to be able to stop, 00:10:44.77\00:10:46.54 and to be able to talk to You, and to know that 00:10:46.54\00:10:48.78 Your Spirit will come to us when we ask You to be with us, 00:10:48.78\00:10:51.95 and to teach us, and to enlighten us in the way 00:10:51.95\00:10:54.92 that You know that we need. 00:10:54.92\00:10:56.58 God, we thank You so much for Your Book of Acts 00:10:56.58\00:10:58.75 that You have given to us in Your Holy Bible. 00:10:58.75\00:11:01.06 We pray God in heaven that You'll enlighten us, 00:11:01.06\00:11:03.26 that You'll strengthen our faith, 00:11:03.26\00:11:04.49 and to help us to understand Your plan for our life 00:11:04.49\00:11:07.23 that much better. 00:11:07.23\00:11:08.63 Please be with Pastor Doug as he speaks, 00:11:08.63\00:11:10.73 and be with his heart, and with his mind, 00:11:10.73\00:11:12.37 today as well. 00:11:12.37\00:11:13.64 In Jesus' name we pray these things, God. 00:11:13.64\00:11:15.90 Amen. 00:11:15.90\00:11:17.97 Our lesson for today is lesson number 10, 00:11:17.97\00:11:20.68 it's the Third Missionary Journey of Paul, 00:11:20.68\00:11:23.24 we have a memory verse. 00:11:23.24\00:11:24.88 And the memory verse is from Acts 20:24. 00:11:24.88\00:11:28.95 And I would appreciate if you can say it with me, 00:11:28.95\00:11:31.85 Acts 20:24 here, and your lesson 00:11:31.85\00:11:34.56 is from the New Revised Standard Version. 00:11:34.56\00:11:36.12 You ready? 00:11:36.12\00:11:37.99 "I do not count my life of any value to myself, 00:11:37.99\00:11:42.36 if only I may finish my course and the ministry 00:11:42.36\00:11:46.17 that I received from the Lord Jesus, 00:11:46.17\00:11:48.57 to testify to the good news of God's grace." 00:11:48.57\00:11:52.71 You know if we stop right here, 00:11:52.71\00:11:54.01 if you were to memorize that verse, 00:11:54.01\00:11:55.54 and made it sort of a motto for your life, 00:11:55.54\00:11:57.98 the lesson would not be in vain. 00:11:57.98\00:12:00.55 For Paul to say, "I don't count my life, 00:12:00.55\00:12:03.99 the only thing that matters is that I might be faithful 00:12:03.99\00:12:06.92 and that I could tell others the gospel." 00:12:06.92\00:12:09.16 That's what he's saying here. 00:12:09.16\00:12:10.89 Wouldn't that be a great place to come 00:12:10.89\00:12:12.23 to in your Christian experience where you could have that? 00:12:12.23\00:12:15.06 That experience where he said, "Not I but Christ, 00:12:15.06\00:12:17.77 I'm crucified with Christ, the only thing that matters 00:12:17.77\00:12:20.17 is that I'm faithful to do whatever God wants me to do 00:12:20.17\00:12:23.24 and reflecting the gospel." 00:12:23.24\00:12:25.01 That's a great scripture reading for us to memorize. 00:12:25.01\00:12:27.81 All right, now we're on Paul's third missionary journey, 00:12:27.81\00:12:31.68 and maybe I'll begin... 00:12:31.68\00:12:33.01 And I should tell you what our assignment is today. 00:12:33.01\00:12:35.82 We're going to do our best to try to cover 00:12:35.82\00:12:38.12 Acts 18:24 00:12:38.12\00:12:43.22 through Acts 21:15. 00:12:43.22\00:12:47.83 You heard the story about the hunters 00:12:47.83\00:12:49.20 that were out in the woods hunting. 00:12:49.20\00:12:51.70 And one had a rifle, one had a shotgun, 00:12:51.70\00:12:55.20 and they came to the edge of the woods 00:12:55.20\00:12:57.21 where it opened up into a great meadow, 00:12:57.21\00:12:59.17 and they looked down into the meadow below 00:12:59.17\00:13:00.94 and there were 10 deer. 00:13:00.94\00:13:03.61 And the hunter that had the shotgun said, 00:13:03.61\00:13:06.18 "Don't move if I shoot now, I can hit them all." 00:13:06.18\00:13:11.09 And his friend said, 00:13:11.09\00:13:12.29 "You probably will hit them all, 00:13:12.29\00:13:13.52 but we won't take anything home." 00:13:13.52\00:13:15.86 He said, "If you could hold still, 00:13:15.86\00:13:17.69 let me shoot, I'll hit one, and we'll take it home." 00:13:17.69\00:13:21.16 Of course, you'll understand the difference 00:13:21.16\00:13:22.56 between a shotgun that sprays everywhere 00:13:22.56\00:13:24.77 and a rifle that has one bullet. 00:13:24.77\00:13:27.60 Well, you know, what the challenge is for me 00:13:27.60\00:13:28.97 as a Sabbath school teacher is people say, 00:13:28.97\00:13:32.34 Karen talked to me about it this morning, 00:13:32.34\00:13:34.28 they say, 00:13:34.28\00:13:35.38 "You're not covering the whole lesson." 00:13:35.38\00:13:37.68 And I say, "Well, there's so much to cover 00:13:37.68\00:13:39.35 that I just have to do a fly over, 00:13:39.35\00:13:40.95 and it's like firing a little buckshot at everything, 00:13:40.95\00:13:43.35 you know, you kind of hit a little bit everything, 00:13:43.35\00:13:45.15 but you don't take anything home 00:13:45.15\00:13:46.86 or I got to slow down trying cover something well." 00:13:46.86\00:13:48.99 So which way do you want it, friends, 00:13:48.99\00:13:50.23 rifle or shotgun today? 00:13:50.23\00:13:51.89 Rifle. You want rifle. 00:13:51.89\00:13:54.30 That make some of the teachers that are watching mad 00:13:54.30\00:13:56.10 because they watch my lesson 00:13:56.10\00:13:57.17 before they teach, and they say, 00:13:57.17\00:13:58.27 "You never even got to Wednesday and Thursday!" 00:13:58.27\00:14:01.40 Well, I'll do my best. Let's see what happens. 00:14:01.40\00:14:02.84 I just wasted time, didn't I? 00:14:02.84\00:14:04.57 Okay, well... 00:14:04.57\00:14:07.74 It's so hard to decide. 00:14:07.74\00:14:08.88 Let's go... 00:14:08.88\00:14:09.91 And I just want to read a little introduction 00:14:09.91\00:14:11.61 because we're talking about his third journey, 00:14:11.61\00:14:13.18 but we sort of need to wrap up his second journey. 00:14:13.18\00:14:16.18 Go to Acts 18, and you can go to verse 18, he's in Corinth. 00:14:16.18\00:14:21.99 Now we never did read this last week. 00:14:21.99\00:14:24.56 So Paul, Acts 18:18. 00:14:24.56\00:14:26.19 "So Paul remained a good while, 00:14:26.19\00:14:27.83 and then he took leave of the brethren 00:14:27.83\00:14:29.40 and sailed for Syria, 00:14:29.40\00:14:30.90 and Priscilla and Aquila are with him. 00:14:30.90\00:14:33.57 And he had his hair cut off in Cenchreae, 00:14:33.57\00:14:36.07 and he had taken a vow." 00:14:36.07\00:14:37.87 This is first of two times he does that. 00:14:37.87\00:14:40.41 And he comes to Ephesus. 00:14:40.41\00:14:42.08 Now he's in Ephesus, 00:14:42.08\00:14:43.41 we're going to go back to Ephesus in a minute, 00:14:43.41\00:14:45.55 and he left them there. 00:14:45.55\00:14:46.61 But he himself entered the synagogue 00:14:46.61\00:14:49.15 and reason with the Jews. 00:14:49.15\00:14:50.62 When they asked him to stay longer with them, 00:14:50.62\00:14:53.19 he did not consent, he took leave of them saying, 00:14:53.19\00:14:56.32 "I must by all means 00:14:56.32\00:14:57.86 keep the coming feast in Jerusalem, 00:14:57.86\00:15:00.30 but I will return again to you God willing," 00:15:00.30\00:15:03.16 and he sailed from Ephesus. 00:15:03.16\00:15:04.30 So on this third journey, 00:15:04.30\00:15:05.43 he does go back to Ephesus straight away. 00:15:05.43\00:15:08.77 And when he had landed in Caesarea and gone up 00:15:08.77\00:15:11.01 and greeted the church, he went down to Antioch, 00:15:11.01\00:15:14.04 and after he had spent some time there, 00:15:14.04\00:15:15.71 he had gone to Jerusalem, then he goes to Antioch. 00:15:15.71\00:15:18.28 And after he had spent some time there, 00:15:18.28\00:15:19.75 he departed and he went over to the region 00:15:19.75\00:15:21.68 of Galatia and Phrygia, in order to strengthen 00:15:21.68\00:15:24.49 all of the disciples. 00:15:24.49\00:15:26.69 Now it takes a little detour here, 00:15:26.69\00:15:28.69 and it introduces someone 00:15:28.69\00:15:30.46 who is to become a champion in the gospel 00:15:30.46\00:15:33.36 by the name of Apollos. 00:15:33.36\00:15:35.86 Now, I'm in Acts 18:24, 00:15:35.86\00:15:39.07 "A certain Jew, named Apollos, born in Alexandria..." 00:15:39.07\00:15:43.67 I want to give somebody upfront warning, 00:15:43.67\00:15:45.11 you're going to have a verse for me in a minute. 00:15:45.11\00:15:46.31 Okay, 1 Corinthians, you have that. 00:15:46.31\00:15:49.04 "A certain Jew name Apollos, born in Alexandria, 00:15:49.04\00:15:51.51 an eloquent man and mighty in the scriptures, 00:15:51.51\00:15:54.72 he came to Ephesus." 00:15:54.72\00:15:56.25 Now Paul is in Ephesus, he's gone back there, 00:15:56.25\00:15:58.19 he also sees Paul there. 00:15:58.19\00:16:00.59 "This man having been instructed 00:16:00.59\00:16:02.92 in the way of the Lord being fervent in spirit, 00:16:02.92\00:16:06.59 he spoke and he taught accurately 00:16:06.59\00:16:08.46 the things of the Lord though he knew 00:16:08.46\00:16:10.77 only the baptism of John." 00:16:10.77\00:16:12.70 Now this concept of only understanding 00:16:12.70\00:16:15.47 the baptism of John comes up twice 00:16:15.47\00:16:17.34 in the next few passages. 00:16:17.34\00:16:18.91 You'll also see it in Acts 19. 00:16:18.91\00:16:22.68 Let me just see if I can give you the picture. 00:16:22.68\00:16:25.31 Who is the greatest of the prophets 00:16:25.31\00:16:26.65 according to Jesus? 00:16:26.65\00:16:28.48 John the Baptist. 00:16:28.48\00:16:30.19 He was... 00:16:30.19\00:16:31.19 His ministry were short, but it was powerful. 00:16:31.19\00:16:35.66 The teachings of John, the call to repentance... 00:16:35.66\00:16:38.93 And what was John's message? 00:16:38.93\00:16:41.26 "Repent for kingdom of heaven is at hand, 00:16:41.26\00:16:44.97 so that I baptize you with water..." 00:16:44.97\00:16:46.57 What's the rest of that? 00:16:46.57\00:16:48.77 "But there's another one coming 00:16:48.77\00:16:50.81 who shoes I'm not worthy to wear. 00:16:50.81\00:16:53.27 He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire, 00:16:53.27\00:16:55.68 I am the voice of one preparing the way of the Lord. 00:16:55.68\00:16:59.21 I'm here to announce the coming of the Messiah. 00:16:59.21\00:17:03.22 There's one who stands among you." 00:17:03.22\00:17:05.62 So they thought the Messiah was going to be, you know, 00:17:05.62\00:17:07.62 just some glorious king, but they remembered, 00:17:07.62\00:17:08.89 "You know, David was one of us, and he became a great king." 00:17:08.89\00:17:12.03 And then finally Jesus comes to the Jordan, 00:17:12.03\00:17:13.80 He's baptized, John the Baptist says, 00:17:13.80\00:17:15.96 "Behold." Now he says that several times. 00:17:15.96\00:17:18.27 So John introduced Jesus, John preach repentance, 00:17:18.27\00:17:21.17 Johnson said, "Prepare the way of the Lord," 00:17:21.17\00:17:22.84 John said, "I baptize you with water, 00:17:22.84\00:17:24.67 but there's a better baptism coming, 00:17:24.67\00:17:26.94 a Holy Spirit fire baptism 00:17:26.94\00:17:28.64 that will come through the Messiah." 00:17:28.64\00:17:31.28 So a lot of people were converted, 00:17:31.28\00:17:32.98 this is all of Judah and Jerusalem 00:17:32.98\00:17:34.82 went out to the Jordan, they were baptized with John. 00:17:34.82\00:17:36.69 There was a great awakening that happened 00:17:36.69\00:17:39.35 through the ministry and the teaching of John. 00:17:39.35\00:17:40.96 The great return to the Bible, and they'd heard that 00:17:40.96\00:17:46.09 Jesus was introduced, 00:17:46.09\00:17:47.46 but they hadn't really heard a lot about the teachings 00:17:47.46\00:17:50.13 of the apostles and of Jesus. 00:17:50.13\00:17:52.17 They didn't have email back then, 00:17:52.17\00:17:54.10 they didn't have printing presses back then. 00:17:54.10\00:17:56.94 The only way these things traveled was by foot, 00:17:56.94\00:18:00.24 you know, some things went by letter 00:18:00.24\00:18:01.48 but these gospels had not been written yet. 00:18:01.48\00:18:03.55 Okay, so Apollos believed in John, 00:18:03.55\00:18:06.11 he even believed that Jesus was a Messiah 00:18:06.11\00:18:08.05 that had been introduced, but he didn't understand 00:18:08.05\00:18:11.19 a lot of the teachings about how do you prove 00:18:11.19\00:18:13.89 that Jesus is Messiah, and so... 00:18:13.89\00:18:16.36 But he's an eloquent man, 00:18:16.36\00:18:18.06 and it says he's taught in the way of the Lord. 00:18:18.06\00:18:19.69 You might be interested to know the word 00:18:19.69\00:18:21.76 there which says, he had been instructed 00:18:21.76\00:18:23.30 in the way of the Lord that comes from where... 00:18:23.30\00:18:25.77 You know what a catechism is? 00:18:25.77\00:18:27.10 We think of catechism where we think Catholic Church 00:18:27.10\00:18:29.14 is not a bad word, it actually in the Greek here 00:18:29.14\00:18:32.24 it's katekhizo or something, but it's very similar, 00:18:32.24\00:18:34.48 it means to be taught. 00:18:34.48\00:18:36.28 Typically, a catechism is teaching through questions 00:18:36.28\00:18:38.71 and answers which is not a bad way to teach, 00:18:38.71\00:18:41.85 which is why the Catholic say, "If you give us your children, 00:18:41.85\00:18:44.62 they'll be Catholics for life." 00:18:44.62\00:18:46.52 Because they teach them through question and answer, 00:18:46.52\00:18:48.39 and they indoctrinate them. 00:18:48.39\00:18:50.23 Well, that principle, train up a child in the way he should go 00:18:50.23\00:18:52.83 is true in many respects. 00:18:52.83\00:18:55.60 And that's why we need to teach the children 00:18:55.60\00:18:58.10 questions and answers, 00:18:58.10\00:18:59.20 get them to think for themselves, 00:18:59.20\00:19:00.77 get them rooted in the truth, not in the counterfeit. 00:19:00.77\00:19:04.24 Amen? 00:19:04.24\00:19:05.54 And so anyway that's the word that was used. 00:19:05.54\00:19:07.38 And so Apollos is mighty in the scriptures, 00:19:07.38\00:19:10.78 but he knew only the baptism of John. 00:19:10.78\00:19:13.62 So he began to speak boldly in the synagogue 00:19:13.62\00:19:17.79 and when Aquila and Priscilla heard him, 00:19:17.79\00:19:20.09 without embarrassing him, they took him aside. 00:19:20.09\00:19:22.36 Now if you got to correct a person, 00:19:22.36\00:19:23.59 do you do it publicly? 00:19:23.59\00:19:25.93 They say, "You know, 00:19:25.93\00:19:27.03 you're mighty in the scriptures, 00:19:27.03\00:19:28.76 you know, we can tell you love the Lord, 00:19:28.76\00:19:30.27 and God is using you, but can we share 00:19:30.27\00:19:32.10 a little Bible study with you? 00:19:32.10\00:19:33.94 There's something maybe you don't know yet 00:19:33.94\00:19:35.84 we'd like to share with you." 00:19:35.84\00:19:37.07 They take him aside, 00:19:37.07\00:19:38.34 they start talking more about Jesus, 00:19:38.34\00:19:40.08 and the baptism of the Spirit, and what the different parables 00:19:40.08\00:19:43.28 and teachings of Christ. 00:19:43.28\00:19:45.38 And he embraced it all. 00:19:45.38\00:19:47.62 Because, you know, John had announced 00:19:47.62\00:19:49.75 that Jesus was the Messiah. 00:19:49.75\00:19:51.99 "And so he became a mighty preacher 00:19:51.99\00:19:53.89 there in Ephesus, 00:19:53.89\00:19:55.49 and they taught him the way of God more accurately, 00:19:55.49\00:20:00.53 and when he desired to cross to Achaia, 00:20:00.53\00:20:02.73 to the brethren, they wrote, exhorting the disciples 00:20:02.73\00:20:05.87 that they should receive him, and he arrived, 00:20:05.87\00:20:08.50 and he greatly helped those who had believed through grace, 00:20:08.50\00:20:12.04 for he vigorously refuted the Jews, 00:20:12.04\00:20:14.64 publicly showing from the scriptures 00:20:14.64\00:20:16.71 that Jesus is the Christ." 00:20:16.71\00:20:18.28 So how should we be presenting the truth, from the scriptures? 00:20:18.28\00:20:22.32 Now did the Jews believe the scriptures? 00:20:22.32\00:20:24.89 They did. 00:20:24.89\00:20:25.99 So here we are Seventh-day Adventist Christians, 00:20:25.99\00:20:28.56 the Lord's given us the three angles' message. 00:20:28.56\00:20:30.49 There are a lot of God's people in other churches. 00:20:30.49\00:20:32.99 Amen? Amen. 00:20:32.99\00:20:34.76 Some of them are mighty in the Word, 00:20:34.76\00:20:36.40 but they don't understand 00:20:36.40\00:20:37.90 the whole three angles' message, 00:20:37.90\00:20:39.00 maybe they don't know 00:20:39.00\00:20:40.10 or understand the state of the dead, 00:20:40.10\00:20:41.60 or they don't understand 00:20:41.60\00:20:42.64 that the Sabbath is still intact. 00:20:42.64\00:20:44.77 And in love we ought to go to them, 00:20:44.77\00:20:47.01 and study with them, 00:20:47.01\00:20:48.54 and teach them the Word of God more perfectly, right? 00:20:48.54\00:20:51.68 From what? The scriptures. 00:20:51.68\00:20:53.88 So there's a great revival that followed 00:20:53.88\00:20:55.68 because what Apollos did. 00:20:55.68\00:20:56.72 Now Apollos, he end ups, as far as we can tell, 00:20:56.72\00:20:59.85 he ends up being recognized in the same capacity 00:20:59.85\00:21:03.12 as an apostle. 00:21:03.12\00:21:05.36 And he really grew strong, at least he was an evangelist. 00:21:05.36\00:21:08.76 You're going to read a verse 00:21:08.76\00:21:09.83 just to give a little more insight on that. 00:21:09.83\00:21:12.43 1 Corinthians 3:5, 6. 00:21:12.43\00:21:16.30 "Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, 00:21:16.30\00:21:19.64 but ministers through whom you believed, 00:21:19.64\00:21:21.98 as the Lord gave to each one? 00:21:21.98\00:21:24.08 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase." 00:21:24.08\00:21:29.38 Now who is one of the greatest apostles 00:21:29.38\00:21:32.25 in the New Testament? 00:21:32.25\00:21:33.89 Well, Paul writes almost 50% of the New Testament. 00:21:33.89\00:21:37.13 Paul is one of the greatest evangelists. 00:21:37.13\00:21:38.69 I mean, we're talking now about 00:21:38.69\00:21:39.86 the third missionary journey of Paul, 00:21:39.86\00:21:41.33 there was actually four. 00:21:41.33\00:21:42.90 There may have been others we don't know about. 00:21:42.90\00:21:44.27 We don't know if he made it to Spain, 00:21:44.27\00:21:45.93 history is unclear about that. 00:21:45.93\00:21:49.14 Incredible evangelist from town to town, 00:21:49.14\00:21:51.81 raising up churches right and left. 00:21:51.81\00:21:53.34 You know, our church struggles to raise up a church. 00:21:53.34\00:21:56.28 I mean, our denomination at large not so much overseas 00:21:56.28\00:21:59.45 as in North America, it's getting more difficult. 00:21:59.45\00:22:01.45 We praise God, this is a church plant. 00:22:01.45\00:22:04.55 And God willing as we continue to grow, 00:22:04.55\00:22:06.79 we can plant churches in Folsom and other places. 00:22:06.79\00:22:09.12 Amen? 00:22:09.12\00:22:10.76 But Paul was a mighty... 00:22:10.76\00:22:12.09 So when they start comparing to the Corinthians, 00:22:12.09\00:22:14.50 two of the greatest evangelists, 00:22:14.50\00:22:17.27 just the fact that you would be listed with Paul 00:22:17.27\00:22:20.87 really says a lot about Apollos. 00:22:20.87\00:22:23.47 They saw the great work that had been done 00:22:23.47\00:22:25.44 by Apollos in Corinth and other places, and he was... 00:22:25.44\00:22:29.34 And you'll find his name mentioned many times 00:22:29.34\00:22:31.18 through the writings of Paul, 00:22:31.18\00:22:32.85 he ended up becoming just a real. 00:22:32.85\00:22:34.55 I mean, you got Billy Sunday, you got Dwight Moody, 00:22:34.55\00:22:36.82 you got Billy Graham. 00:22:36.82\00:22:37.85 You know, this is a few really great evangelists 00:22:37.85\00:22:40.22 we think of in the English world. 00:22:40.22\00:22:43.73 Apollos ends up becoming one of them. 00:22:43.73\00:22:45.29 So I just wanted you to understand 00:22:45.29\00:22:46.39 the statue of this man, and how powerful, 00:22:46.39\00:22:48.80 and eloquent he really was. 00:22:48.80\00:22:50.33 Acts 19, trying to continue, 00:22:50.33\00:22:53.47 not just do the whole shotgun thing. 00:22:53.47\00:22:55.94 "And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth." 00:22:55.94\00:22:57.97 And Apollos was doing a great revival at Corinth. 00:22:57.97\00:23:00.84 "That Paul, having passed through the upper coast, 00:23:00.84\00:23:03.14 he comes to Ephesus. 00:23:03.14\00:23:04.51 And finding some disciples, he says to them, 00:23:04.51\00:23:07.65 'Did you receive the Holy Spirit 00:23:07.65\00:23:08.95 when you believed?' 00:23:08.95\00:23:10.32 So they said to him, 00:23:10.32\00:23:11.52 We've not heard whether there is any Holy Spirit.' 00:23:11.52\00:23:13.89 " You know, every Jew and even the gentiles 00:23:13.89\00:23:17.83 understood there was a spirit, 00:23:17.83\00:23:19.26 so they're speaking a little bit 00:23:19.26\00:23:22.13 in exaggeration here, hyperbole you might say. 00:23:22.13\00:23:25.37 And they said, 00:23:25.37\00:23:26.37 "Well, no there's been no teaching on this, 00:23:26.37\00:23:27.54 what are you talking about?" 00:23:27.54\00:23:28.64 "He says, 00:23:28.64\00:23:29.70 'Into what then were you baptized?' " 00:23:29.70\00:23:32.01 Remember, there's both baptisms, 00:23:32.01\00:23:33.41 Jesus said, 00:23:33.41\00:23:34.71 "Unless you are born of the water," 00:23:34.71\00:23:37.05 John's baptism, "and the Spirit," 00:23:37.05\00:23:39.58 Jesus' baptism, "you cannot enter the kingdom." 00:23:39.58\00:23:43.65 You need both baptisms, right? 00:23:43.65\00:23:46.05 And they said, "Well, we've heard about 00:23:46.05\00:23:47.09 the baptism or repentance of John, 00:23:47.09\00:23:48.92 but what is this the Holy Spirit 00:23:48.92\00:23:50.63 being poured out?" 00:23:50.63\00:23:51.69 They didn't know much about Jesus. 00:23:51.69\00:23:54.20 "Paul said, 'Indeed John baptized 00:23:54.20\00:23:55.80 with a baptism of repentance 00:23:55.80\00:23:57.33 saying that the people should believe on Him 00:23:57.33\00:23:59.93 who would come after him, that is on Jesus,"' 00:23:59.93\00:24:02.07 who John announced. 00:24:02.07\00:24:03.94 "When they heard this, they were baptized 00:24:03.94\00:24:06.24 in the name of the Lord Jesus." 00:24:06.24\00:24:07.84 And I want to pause right here. 00:24:07.84\00:24:09.38 People often ask, "Pastor Doug, 00:24:09.38\00:24:11.51 is there ever a time for rebaptism? 00:24:11.51\00:24:15.32 Is it ever appropriate to be rebaptized? 00:24:15.32\00:24:17.32 I was baptized as a child." 00:24:17.32\00:24:19.35 You know, 00:24:19.35\00:24:20.46 maybe they were baptized as a baby, 00:24:20.46\00:24:21.82 you should be rebaptized 00:24:21.82\00:24:22.92 because the Bible doesn't support infant baptism 00:24:22.92\00:24:25.83 because before you're baptized, 00:24:25.83\00:24:27.13 you need to believe with all your heart, 00:24:27.13\00:24:29.56 baby can't really do that, you need to be repenting, 00:24:29.56\00:24:32.40 baby, what's he gonna repent off, 00:24:32.40\00:24:34.57 and you need to be taught, it's hard to teach a baby. 00:24:34.57\00:24:39.81 And so when you look at the criteria 00:24:39.81\00:24:41.31 of what is needed for baptism, babies shouldn't be baptized. 00:24:41.31\00:24:45.51 But when a child gets old enough to understand 00:24:45.51\00:24:47.35 the claims of the gospel, to believe, to be taught, 00:24:47.35\00:24:50.49 they have their own personal relationship 00:24:50.49\00:24:52.15 with Jesus, 00:24:52.15\00:24:53.25 this may happen at different times. 00:24:53.25\00:24:55.29 People say, "How old should a child be 00:24:55.29\00:24:57.36 before they're baptized?" 00:24:57.36\00:24:59.29 I've seen children that maybe were nine years old 00:24:59.29\00:25:01.73 that were ready 00:25:01.73\00:25:03.00 because they just had a spiritual maturity about them 00:25:03.00\00:25:04.77 and a personal relationship with Jesus. 00:25:04.77\00:25:07.60 You go to Europe, 00:25:07.60\00:25:08.97 I know we have some of our friends here 00:25:08.97\00:25:10.54 from Eastern Europe, and they say, 00:25:10.54\00:25:12.24 "Sixteen, twenty-one, 00:25:12.24\00:25:13.34 we don't baptize until they get older." 00:25:13.34\00:25:14.71 Is that right? 00:25:14.71\00:25:16.11 Yeah, I see some nods there. 00:25:16.11\00:25:17.95 And so it varies. 00:25:17.95\00:25:21.72 Someone... 00:25:21.72\00:25:22.78 James White was once 00:25:22.78\00:25:23.89 taking some children to the river to be baptized 00:25:23.89\00:25:26.35 during a camp meeting, and they said, 00:25:26.35\00:25:28.12 "Elder White, 00:25:28.12\00:25:29.46 don't you think those children 00:25:29.46\00:25:30.56 are a little young for baptism?" 00:25:30.56\00:25:33.09 And he said, "Well, let me ask you a question, 00:25:33.09\00:25:34.40 do you think these children are old enough to be lost." 00:25:34.40\00:25:36.56 They said, "Yes." 00:25:36.56\00:25:37.97 He said, 00:25:37.97\00:25:39.03 "Then they're old enough to be saved." 00:25:39.03\00:25:41.30 So the idea is they need to be able to understand, 00:25:41.30\00:25:45.01 you know, what's right and wrong. 00:25:45.01\00:25:46.17 And what that exact age of accountability is... 00:25:46.17\00:25:49.01 You've got to be careful about fixing a point, 00:25:49.01\00:25:51.41 you know, as a sort of a rough meter you might say, 00:25:51.41\00:25:54.58 "How old was Jesus when he was bar mitzvah, 00:25:54.58\00:25:57.19 and he went to the temple?" 00:25:57.19\00:25:58.29 He was 12. 00:25:58.29\00:25:59.55 So that's sort of a ballpark. 00:25:59.55\00:26:00.76 But some are ready earlier, some are ready later. 00:26:00.76\00:26:03.29 If a person has a mental deficiency, 00:26:03.29\00:26:05.16 they may never be ready, you know what I mean? 00:26:05.16\00:26:08.10 And so it's just... 00:26:08.10\00:26:11.23 You understand. 00:26:11.23\00:26:12.30 So there is a time for rebaptism. 00:26:12.30\00:26:14.77 Three reasons you should be rebaptized. 00:26:14.77\00:26:17.51 One is you and I baptized biblically, 00:26:17.51\00:26:20.94 I baptized as a baby. 00:26:20.94\00:26:23.85 Two, if you were baptized 00:26:23.85\00:26:26.85 and you've backslidden in a big way, 00:26:26.85\00:26:29.52 baptism's like marriage... 00:26:29.52\00:26:31.25 You know, if you're married to someone 00:26:31.25\00:26:32.49 and you divorce them legally, you got to get remarried. 00:26:32.49\00:26:35.62 Now that doesn't mean 00:26:35.62\00:26:36.83 if married people have an argument, 00:26:36.83\00:26:38.09 they've got to get remarried. 00:26:38.09\00:26:40.10 Some people say, "Pastor Doug, 00:26:40.10\00:26:41.56 I slipped and fell, I should be rebaptized." 00:26:41.56\00:26:43.80 Not necessarily because some of you 00:26:43.80\00:26:45.40 get baptized every week. 00:26:45.40\00:26:48.10 And so, you know, you say, "Well, what's the appropriate?" 00:26:48.10\00:26:51.44 You know, if a person turns their back on the Lord, 00:26:51.44\00:26:53.34 they turn from the church, and they go out in the world, 00:26:53.34\00:26:56.61 if they're returning, 00:26:56.61\00:26:58.85 there might be a need for rebaptism. 00:26:58.85\00:27:02.78 And a person comes to me, and they're getting rebaptized 00:27:02.78\00:27:04.89 for the fifth time, there's something wrong, 00:27:04.89\00:27:06.15 they don't understand it. 00:27:06.15\00:27:08.59 And then the third reason for rebaptism 00:27:08.59\00:27:10.36 falls in the category of Acts 19 00:27:10.36\00:27:12.46 where these Ephesian believers... 00:27:12.46\00:27:15.36 There was just the whole truth... 00:27:15.36\00:27:16.60 They were baptized by immersion, 00:27:16.60\00:27:18.03 correct baptism, 00:27:18.03\00:27:20.90 but John the Baptist, right ministry did it, 00:27:20.90\00:27:24.84 but there's so much they didn't understand. 00:27:24.84\00:27:28.31 And when they finally learned all this truth about Jesus 00:27:28.31\00:27:30.78 that they had missed, 00:27:30.78\00:27:32.11 they were baptized into the entire truth. 00:27:32.11\00:27:34.42 I remember hearing about a Baptist minister 00:27:34.42\00:27:37.55 went to an evangelistic meeting 00:27:37.55\00:27:38.82 and then after hearing the entire series, 00:27:38.82\00:27:41.82 he accepted the Sabbath truth, and he went to the pastor 00:27:41.82\00:27:43.96 and said, "You know, I think, I should be rebaptized." 00:27:43.96\00:27:45.79 Pastor said, "Now you're Baptist." 00:27:45.79\00:27:47.23 He said, "Right." 00:27:47.23\00:27:48.30 He says, "You baptized by immersion." 00:27:48.30\00:27:49.36 "Right." 00:27:49.36\00:27:50.53 He said, "Well, you technically were baptized correctly, 00:27:50.53\00:27:54.54 you could join the church by profession of faith." 00:27:54.54\00:27:57.47 He said, "Well, I was baptized into nine commandments, 00:27:57.47\00:27:59.74 I want to get baptized into all ten. 00:27:59.74\00:28:02.18 And so that would be this kind of case. 00:28:02.18\00:28:04.58 Now there's something else that happened here 00:28:04.58\00:28:06.28 when they rebaptized. 00:28:06.28\00:28:07.35 Read on. 00:28:07.35\00:28:08.72 It says here that Paul rebaptized them, 00:28:08.72\00:28:12.59 I'm in verse 5, "In the name of the Lord, 00:28:12.59\00:28:17.03 and he laid hands on them 00:28:17.03\00:28:18.59 and the Holy Spirit came upon them, 00:28:18.59\00:28:21.40 and they spoke with tongues, and they prophesied." 00:28:21.40\00:28:24.57 Now that does not mean they babbled. 00:28:24.57\00:28:26.63 What does the word prophesied mean 00:28:26.63\00:28:28.44 when Paul uses the word? 00:28:28.44\00:28:30.71 It means to preach. 00:28:30.71\00:28:33.81 It means teaching the Word, preaching the Word. 00:28:33.81\00:28:35.68 Prophesying does not... 00:28:35.68\00:28:36.85 Sometimes we think of a prophet like Elijah 00:28:36.85\00:28:38.71 or somebody foretelling the future. 00:28:38.71\00:28:40.62 John the Baptist was a great prophet, 00:28:40.62\00:28:42.58 isn't that right? 00:28:42.58\00:28:44.15 Tell me a, you know... 00:28:44.15\00:28:46.19 I guess the only prophecy John the Baptist made 00:28:46.19\00:28:48.02 was about Jesus as one coming after me, 00:28:48.02\00:28:50.06 but John didn't really foretell the future. 00:28:50.06\00:28:53.23 He was a teacher of repentance. 00:28:53.23\00:28:56.03 The Bible says Philip had four daughters 00:28:56.03\00:28:58.37 that did prophesied. 00:28:58.37\00:28:59.87 That doesn't mean they went around 00:28:59.87\00:29:01.00 foretelling the future. 00:29:01.00\00:29:02.07 It means the four daughters of this evangelist 00:29:02.07\00:29:04.41 were also doing evangelism. 00:29:04.41\00:29:06.31 They were teaching. 00:29:06.31\00:29:07.74 And so when these men were speaking in tongues, 00:29:07.74\00:29:12.01 what were they saying? 00:29:12.01\00:29:13.31 They were prophesying. 00:29:13.31\00:29:14.38 They were teaching in other languages. 00:29:14.38\00:29:16.72 Whenever you have the speaking of tongues in the Bible, 00:29:16.72\00:29:18.89 there's three examples. 00:29:18.89\00:29:20.16 I told you this before but some, I'm sure, 00:29:20.16\00:29:21.76 were not here. 00:29:21.76\00:29:23.26 Acts 2, what's the other one? 00:29:23.26\00:29:26.03 Acts 10 and Acts 19. 00:29:26.03\00:29:28.53 This is the last example of speaking in tongues 00:29:28.53\00:29:31.77 in the Bible. 00:29:31.77\00:29:33.17 I'm not talking about where Paul talks about speaking 00:29:33.17\00:29:35.17 in tongues in 1 Corinthians 14. 00:29:35.17\00:29:37.67 The example of speaking in tongues is three examples. 00:29:37.67\00:29:40.61 All three examples, 00:29:40.61\00:29:41.81 there are multiple language groups present. 00:29:41.81\00:29:45.01 Purpose for tongues is that 00:29:45.01\00:29:46.68 you might communicate the gospel 00:29:46.68\00:29:48.35 in the languages of people present 00:29:48.35\00:29:50.05 that they may not understand. 00:29:50.05\00:29:51.55 These are Ephesians believers Paul and others with him 00:29:51.55\00:29:54.92 spoke different languages. 00:29:54.92\00:29:56.52 They heard what they were saying. 00:29:56.52\00:29:57.99 What were they saying? They were prophesying. 00:29:57.99\00:29:59.76 They were teaching in these other tongues. 00:29:59.76\00:30:02.26 And around Ephesus, there were many languages 00:30:02.26\00:30:04.37 that were spoken in the Roman Empire 00:30:04.37\00:30:06.30 or local tribal languages. 00:30:06.30\00:30:07.77 There was Latin, there was a Greek, 00:30:07.77\00:30:09.27 and Paul spoke Hebrew. 00:30:09.27\00:30:10.84 So is that clear? Okay. 00:30:10.84\00:30:13.88 Anyway, and it's also interesting 00:30:13.88\00:30:16.31 that tells us there were 12 of them in all. 00:30:16.31\00:30:19.81 Now do you think he mentions that by accident? 00:30:19.81\00:30:24.12 Or is this just sort of one of the Bible ways of saying 00:30:24.12\00:30:26.99 the gospel now is going from 12 Jewish apostles, 00:30:26.99\00:30:31.59 the Holy Spirit is now being poured 00:30:31.59\00:30:33.06 on 12 gentile apostles? 00:30:33.06\00:30:36.70 See what's happening? 00:30:36.70\00:30:37.87 They are being baptized with the Holy Spirit, 00:30:37.87\00:30:40.20 just like at Pentecost, 00:30:40.20\00:30:41.37 you got the 12 in the upper room 00:30:41.37\00:30:44.41 that are preaching about 120 in the upper room, 00:30:44.41\00:30:46.01 but you have 12 apostles, and there's another 12. 00:30:46.01\00:30:49.11 And the God is kind of saying the church now 00:30:49.11\00:30:51.95 is exploding among the gentiles. 00:30:51.95\00:30:53.95 It's not just for the Jews. 00:30:53.95\00:30:56.42 All right. 00:30:56.42\00:30:57.52 Now another interesting story, 00:30:57.52\00:30:58.95 I just don't want to rush past this. 00:30:58.95\00:31:00.69 Acts 19:13, 00:31:00.69\00:31:03.59 "Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists..." 00:31:03.59\00:31:08.66 Any exorcists present? 00:31:08.66\00:31:10.17 There was a movie a few years ago 00:31:13.70\00:31:14.97 that became very popular called "The Exorcist" 00:31:14.97\00:31:18.44 about, you know, 00:31:18.44\00:31:19.47 Catholic priests that specialize 00:31:19.47\00:31:20.91 in casting out devils. 00:31:20.91\00:31:22.71 And for a while, 00:31:22.71\00:31:23.81 there were some Protestant churches 00:31:23.81\00:31:25.18 that became involved, and we get those 00:31:25.18\00:31:27.35 who specialize in casting out demons. 00:31:27.35\00:31:30.12 I always find that's a dubious practice 00:31:30.12\00:31:32.69 that anyone who is a minister that says, 00:31:32.69\00:31:35.62 "That's my special gift 'cause I cast out devils." 00:31:35.62\00:31:38.76 I don't think you ever ought to go looking for it. 00:31:38.76\00:31:41.23 Jesus did say the disciples, the Holy Spirit 00:31:41.23\00:31:43.83 will come upon you, 00:31:43.83\00:31:44.93 and you will be able to cast out devils, 00:31:44.93\00:31:47.67 but I don't think you ever hang out your shingle 00:31:47.67\00:31:49.40 and say, "You know, demons or us, 00:31:49.40\00:31:51.24 we cast out devils or anything like that." 00:31:51.24\00:31:54.21 So here are these young men are going out, 00:31:54.21\00:31:55.74 they are Jewish exorcist, 00:31:55.74\00:31:56.85 "Took it upon themselves 00:31:56.85\00:31:58.01 to call on the name of the Lord Jesus 00:31:58.01\00:31:59.61 over those who had evil spirits, 00:31:59.61\00:32:01.28 and they would say, 00:32:01.28\00:32:02.55 "We exorcise you by Jesus who Paul preaches." 00:32:02.55\00:32:06.42 That's sort of like, you know, 00:32:06.42\00:32:07.49 a second-hand exorcism, I suppose. 00:32:07.49\00:32:10.36 "And there were seven sons of Sceva, 00:32:10.36\00:32:12.26 a Jewish chief priest, who did so." 00:32:12.26\00:32:15.66 Another interesting number, how many sons? 00:32:15.66\00:32:18.43 Just went from 12 to 7. 00:32:18.43\00:32:20.34 These things have spiritual significance. 00:32:20.34\00:32:23.94 And these are from the Jewish priests. 00:32:23.94\00:32:26.34 "And the evil spirits answered and said, 00:32:26.34\00:32:27.94 'Jesus I know and Paul I know, but who are you?' 00:32:27.94\00:32:32.21 And the man in whom the evil spirit 00:32:32.21\00:32:34.28 was leapt on them and overpowered them 00:32:34.28\00:32:37.12 and prevailed against them, 00:32:37.12\00:32:38.85 so they fled out of the house naked and wounded." 00:32:38.85\00:32:42.72 That's very interesting. 00:32:42.72\00:32:44.99 You've got these seven sons of a Jewish priest 00:32:44.99\00:32:47.30 who are trying to cast out devils, 00:32:47.30\00:32:48.70 and it's like they're using the old method. 00:32:48.70\00:32:51.20 And the devil say, 00:32:51.20\00:32:52.60 "You know, you can't just call out Jesus' name, 00:32:52.60\00:32:55.94 like you're saying open sesame or abracadabra 00:32:55.94\00:32:58.17 and some magic word." 00:32:58.17\00:33:00.21 You ever heard people do that? 00:33:00.21\00:33:02.24 They think if they just call up the name of Jesus 00:33:02.24\00:33:05.31 without knowing Christ or what it means 00:33:05.31\00:33:06.88 to praying His name in His character 00:33:06.88\00:33:09.65 or having a relationship with Him, 00:33:09.65\00:33:10.99 that there's some magic in the word. 00:33:10.99\00:33:12.92 The Bible doesn't teach that. 00:33:12.92\00:33:14.72 There's authority in the name of God. 00:33:14.72\00:33:16.39 It's especially in the character of God. 00:33:16.39\00:33:19.46 And so if you're just calling out this name, 00:33:19.46\00:33:22.30 they have no relationship, did not surrendered to Jesus, 00:33:22.30\00:33:24.60 and the demons say, "Oh, yeah, we know Paul, 00:33:24.60\00:33:27.97 and we know Jesus, but who are you?" 00:33:27.97\00:33:32.31 And the devil is one demon possessed man overpowers 00:33:32.31\00:33:36.54 seven young men, beats him up, wounds them, 00:33:36.54\00:33:40.68 strips them, and they flee naked. 00:33:40.68\00:33:44.02 Now this is, again, 00:33:44.02\00:33:45.12 filled with spiritual significance 00:33:45.12\00:33:46.49 because what happened to Adam and Eve 00:33:46.49\00:33:50.09 after they wrestled with the devil? 00:33:50.09\00:33:52.63 Did they end up wounded and naked, 00:33:52.63\00:33:54.73 spiritually wounded and naked? 00:33:54.73\00:33:57.57 What did the devil do to that man 00:33:57.57\00:33:59.03 in Acts 5 that was filled with a legion of demons? 00:33:59.03\00:34:02.94 Was he wounding himself a naked? 00:34:02.94\00:34:07.61 And you can find just through the Bible 00:34:07.61\00:34:10.25 when that man fell among thieves, 00:34:10.25\00:34:12.65 the devil was the thief in that story, 00:34:12.65\00:34:14.65 the Good Samaritan story, they stripped him. 00:34:14.65\00:34:18.49 The devil strips us of all righteousness 00:34:18.49\00:34:21.76 and he wounds us with sin, 00:34:21.76\00:34:24.69 and it's through Christ coming along, 00:34:24.69\00:34:26.33 He heals us and He binds up our wounds. 00:34:26.33\00:34:28.40 And so, it also I think is significant, 00:34:28.40\00:34:30.57 it says these are seven sons of a priest. 00:34:30.57\00:34:34.27 It's like they're trying to pour the new wine 00:34:34.27\00:34:37.01 in old wine skins of Judaism, and there was no power there. 00:34:37.01\00:34:41.41 They had a form of religion without power. 00:34:41.41\00:34:43.91 There are a lot of churches out there 00:34:43.91\00:34:45.05 that are taking the name of Jesus, 00:34:45.05\00:34:46.41 and they don't know Jesus. 00:34:46.41\00:34:48.95 Hey, you've read that prophecy in Isaiah 4 where it says, 00:34:48.95\00:34:54.36 "In that day, seven women will take hold of one man, 00:34:54.36\00:34:56.99 saying, 'We will eat our own bread, 00:34:56.99\00:34:59.53 and we will wear our own apparel, 00:34:59.53\00:35:01.26 only let us be called by your name 00:35:01.26\00:35:03.26 to take away our reproach." 00:35:03.26\00:35:05.10 Kind of like a picture of a lot of churches and the last name, 00:35:05.10\00:35:07.17 they want to use the name of Jesus, 00:35:07.17\00:35:09.44 but they don't want the righteousness of Christ, 00:35:09.44\00:35:11.34 they don't want the teachings of Christ, 00:35:11.34\00:35:12.74 they got their own bread, their own Bible, 00:35:12.74\00:35:14.74 they got their own apparel, their own righteousness, 00:35:14.74\00:35:17.05 but they want His name 00:35:17.05\00:35:18.71 that describes a lot of churches in the last days. 00:35:18.71\00:35:21.12 All right, so they're not able to cast off the devil. 00:35:21.12\00:35:24.19 One more thing, there's so much here. 00:35:24.19\00:35:27.09 I just, you know... 00:35:27.09\00:35:28.12 I just want you to share my frustration. 00:35:28.12\00:35:32.33 It's just hard to rush through this stuff. 00:35:32.33\00:35:34.03 It's so rich. 00:35:34.03\00:35:37.33 The devil said, "Paul, I know." 00:35:37.33\00:35:41.24 But he said to these seven young men, 00:35:41.24\00:35:42.90 "Who are you?" 00:35:42.90\00:35:45.84 Are there some workers for God that the devil knows? 00:35:45.84\00:35:49.94 Why does the devil know... 00:35:49.94\00:35:51.75 Why did the devil know who Paul was? 00:35:51.75\00:35:55.55 Paul was just invading his territory. 00:35:55.55\00:35:58.02 Now the devil, is he all-knowing? 00:35:58.02\00:36:00.19 Now God knows everybody, doesn't He? 00:36:00.19\00:36:01.99 But the devil and his demons, they don't know everybody. 00:36:01.99\00:36:03.73 They're not omniscient. They don't know everything. 00:36:03.73\00:36:06.39 But there are some that the devil knows. 00:36:06.39\00:36:07.83 The devil knows the ones that are taking his people. 00:36:07.83\00:36:13.64 And Paul was a real threat to the devil. 00:36:13.64\00:36:16.94 And, now how many of you would like to pray 00:36:16.94\00:36:18.61 that the devil knows who you are? 00:36:18.61\00:36:20.01 You don't want to raise your hand, do you? 00:36:22.31\00:36:24.18 You kind of, do you say, 00:36:24.18\00:36:25.25 "Yeah, I want to cause the devil trouble, 00:36:25.25\00:36:26.51 but I don't want his special attention, 00:36:26.51\00:36:28.25 but I do want the Lord to be pleased, 00:36:28.25\00:36:29.85 but I don't want the devil to..." 00:36:29.85\00:36:31.25 You don't know how do I this. 00:36:31.25\00:36:33.25 All right, moving on, go to Acts 19:21 00:36:33.25\00:36:37.53 and someone's going to read for me a minute in Romans 5. 00:36:37.53\00:36:43.16 And it says, 00:36:43.16\00:36:45.47 "These things were accomplished..." 00:36:45.47\00:36:46.87 Well, actually, let me see, I want to read... 00:36:49.84\00:36:51.47 Yeah. 00:36:55.41\00:36:56.71 okay, Acts 19:21, 00:36:59.95\00:37:02.72 so it says, "These things were accomplished 00:37:02.72\00:37:04.89 that Paul purposed in the Spirit, 00:37:04.89\00:37:06.29 he had passed through Macedonia and Acacia 00:37:06.29\00:37:08.52 to go to Jerusalem saying, 00:37:08.52\00:37:10.29 'After I've been there, I must also see Rome."' 00:37:10.29\00:37:13.33 And so it doesn't say exactly why he's going to Rome here 00:37:13.33\00:37:16.30 in Acts 19, but we find out in Romans, 00:37:16.30\00:37:18.70 and in 1 Corinthians 16 why he's going to Rome. 00:37:18.70\00:37:22.27 If you look in 1 Corinthians 16:1, 00:37:22.27\00:37:25.17 "Now concerning the collection for the saints 00:37:25.17\00:37:27.14 as I've given orders to the churches of Galatia, 00:37:27.14\00:37:29.18 so you must also do, on the first day of the week, 00:37:29.18\00:37:31.91 let each one of you lay by him something, 00:37:31.91\00:37:34.75 in storing up as God may prosper him 00:37:34.75\00:37:37.05 that there be no collections when I come." 00:37:37.05\00:37:38.85 This is not a church offering. 00:37:38.85\00:37:39.99 He says that you don't have an offering when I come, 00:37:39.99\00:37:42.79 and I'll come to you whatever you give, 00:37:42.79\00:37:45.56 you might approve by your letters, 00:37:45.56\00:37:46.96 I will send and bear your gifts to Jerusalem. 00:37:46.96\00:37:49.43 They were bringing a special gift 00:37:49.43\00:37:51.93 from Ephesus down to Jerusalem if it is fitting. 00:37:51.93\00:37:55.17 Go and read your verse for us. 00:37:55.17\00:37:58.04 Romans 15: 25-26, 00:37:58.04\00:38:00.88 "But now I am going to Jerusalem 00:38:00.88\00:38:03.04 to minister to the saints, 00:38:03.04\00:38:05.25 for it be pleased those from Macedonia and Achaia 00:38:05.25\00:38:08.72 to make a certain contribution for the poor among the saints 00:38:08.72\00:38:12.22 who are in Jerusalem." 00:38:12.22\00:38:14.42 So it's pretty clear, they're bringing a gift down. 00:38:14.42\00:38:17.43 Now during this third journey, 00:38:17.43\00:38:19.96 and I think we've got a map up on the screen. 00:38:19.96\00:38:21.76 I'm going to pop up there real quick. 00:38:21.76\00:38:22.96 And I know some of the towns 00:38:22.96\00:38:25.23 are going to be small in your map, 00:38:25.23\00:38:26.67 so I'll just give it to you here. 00:38:26.67\00:38:28.37 This journey sort of begins in the Antioch, 00:38:28.37\00:38:30.87 and he makes his way through Tarsus, 00:38:30.87\00:38:32.54 which is where Paul used to live, Derbe, 00:38:32.54\00:38:34.74 Lystra, Iconium, Pisidia. 00:38:34.74\00:38:37.58 He stops in Laodicea, 00:38:37.58\00:38:39.15 and then he goes directly to Ephesus. 00:38:39.15\00:38:41.12 He promised them he'd come back. 00:38:41.12\00:38:42.88 He spends time there in Ephesus. 00:38:42.88\00:38:46.12 Makes his way up through Smyrna, Pergamus, 00:38:46.12\00:38:48.79 goes to Chios, crosses over into Macedonia, 00:38:48.79\00:38:52.63 and that's where he spends time in Philippi, Thessalonica, 00:38:52.63\00:38:57.03 Berea, circles down, goes to visit Corinth again, 00:38:57.03\00:39:01.54 goes around Athens, has an adventure there, 00:39:01.54\00:39:04.21 and ends up making his way back. 00:39:04.21\00:39:06.31 He's bringing a gift to the believers 00:39:06.31\00:39:08.54 back in Jerusalem, 00:39:08.54\00:39:09.81 goes back down through Mitylene, 00:39:09.81\00:39:15.35 Miletus, Chios, Patra, and stops in Tyre, 00:39:15.35\00:39:21.32 makes his way back up to Jerusalem. 00:39:21.32\00:39:23.36 So this is a big circuitous trip 00:39:23.36\00:39:25.96 he takes going through Macedonia, 00:39:25.96\00:39:28.30 spends significant time in Ephesus on that trip. 00:39:28.30\00:39:32.67 Anyway, they have some problems in Ephesus. 00:39:32.67\00:39:35.50 You go to Acts 19:21. 00:39:35.50\00:39:40.14 "When these things were accomplished, 00:39:40.14\00:39:41.84 Paul purposed in the Spirit 00:39:41.84\00:39:43.14 that when he had passed through Macedonia and Acacia 00:39:43.14\00:39:46.65 to go to Jerusalem saying, 00:39:46.65\00:39:48.45 'After I've been there, I must see Rome.' " 00:39:48.45\00:39:49.88 We just read that. 00:39:49.88\00:39:51.15 So he sent into Macedonia 00:39:51.15\00:39:52.62 two of those who ministered to him, 00:39:52.62\00:39:55.02 Timothy and Erastus, 00:39:55.02\00:39:56.83 but he himself stayed in Asia for a time. 00:39:56.83\00:40:00.96 And about that time, there arose a great commotion 00:40:00.96\00:40:04.13 about the way, for certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, 00:40:04.13\00:40:08.10 who made silver shrines of Diana, 00:40:08.10\00:40:11.11 he brought no small profit to the craftsman, 00:40:11.11\00:40:13.14 he called them together with the workers 00:40:13.14\00:40:14.84 of a similar occupation and said, 'Men...'" 00:40:14.84\00:40:17.28 They had a union meeting is what it was. 00:40:17.28\00:40:19.51 "You know that we have our prosperity 00:40:19.51\00:40:20.92 by this trade. 00:40:20.92\00:40:22.02 Moreover, you see and hear that not only at Ephesus 00:40:22.02\00:40:24.92 but throughout almost all of Asia, this Paul...'" 00:40:24.92\00:40:28.59 Not only did the devil know who he was 00:40:28.59\00:40:30.83 but all the silversmiths. 00:40:30.83\00:40:32.49 They were making and selling idols 00:40:32.49\00:40:33.86 throughout Asia knew he was. 00:40:33.86\00:40:35.66 "Throughout almost all of Asia, Paul has persuaded 00:40:35.66\00:40:39.20 and turned many away saying that they are not gods 00:40:39.20\00:40:43.81 which are made with hands.'" 00:40:43.81\00:40:45.14 Now was that a special Christian teaching? 00:40:45.14\00:40:46.68 Is that also a Jewish teaching? 00:40:46.68\00:40:49.14 That's Ten Commandments, don't make idols. 00:40:49.14\00:40:52.25 Paul was just doing what the Jews 00:40:52.25\00:40:53.45 should have been doing all those years 00:40:53.45\00:40:55.32 that they were in Asia. 00:40:55.32\00:40:56.85 That's not very popular, is it? 00:40:59.29\00:41:00.72 To go through a culture and tell them, you know, 00:41:00.72\00:41:02.22 "Those silver gods you guys make, 00:41:02.22\00:41:04.96 they're not gods." 00:41:04.96\00:41:07.20 I mean, one of the politically correct thing be to do, 00:41:07.20\00:41:10.60 you know, we don't want to upset them. 00:41:10.60\00:41:13.07 But Paul was a bold preacher. 00:41:13.07\00:41:14.87 And he was more concerned about offending God 00:41:14.87\00:41:17.01 than offending man. 00:41:17.01\00:41:18.77 And so he was telling them those are worthless idols. 00:41:18.77\00:41:21.21 He was saying what Isaiah said. 00:41:21.21\00:41:23.21 And so much so that the market began to fall out 00:41:23.21\00:41:26.21 in the idol business. 00:41:26.21\00:41:28.35 And Demetrius said, 00:41:28.35\00:41:29.38 "Look, we've got to have a meeting. 00:41:29.38\00:41:30.49 We're going to rally and turn this thing around. 00:41:30.49\00:41:32.05 This guy is wrecking our business." 00:41:32.05\00:41:36.06 "Not only is this trade of ours in danger 00:41:36.06\00:41:38.09 of falling into disrepute," 00:41:38.09\00:41:40.03 as it should, 00:41:40.03\00:41:42.16 "And also the temple of the great goddess Diana," 00:41:42.16\00:41:44.83 Artemus, 00:41:44.83\00:41:46.00 "May be despised in her magnificence destroyed 00:41:46.00\00:41:48.97 whom all of Asia and the world worship." 00:41:48.97\00:41:51.94 That's another example of hyperbole in the Bible. 00:41:51.94\00:41:54.41 "Now when they heard this, they were full of wrath 00:41:54.41\00:41:55.88 and cried out." 00:41:55.88\00:41:57.01 And they also have this big get together, 00:41:57.01\00:41:59.31 and they gather in the theater, and they say, 00:41:59.31\00:42:01.22 "Great is Diana of the Ephesians." 00:42:01.22\00:42:02.95 They have a pep rally. 00:42:02.95\00:42:04.29 "So the whole city was filled with confusion, 00:42:04.29\00:42:06.39 and they rushed in to..." 00:42:06.39\00:42:08.26 "And they seized the altar with one accord, 00:42:08.26\00:42:09.99 having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, 00:42:09.99\00:42:12.86 the Macedonians, Paul's traveling companions. 00:42:12.86\00:42:15.73 And when Paul wanted to go in to the people, 00:42:15.73\00:42:18.27 the disciples would not allow him." 00:42:18.27\00:42:21.87 Paul, whenever he saw crowd, said, 00:42:21.87\00:42:23.44 "Let me add them. Let me add them. 00:42:23.44\00:42:25.61 Now that's evangelist for you. 00:42:25.61\00:42:26.84 You know, when they're torturing you, 00:42:26.84\00:42:27.98 he wants to convert the torturers. 00:42:27.98\00:42:30.88 Evangelists gets hit by a car, in the ambulance, 00:42:30.88\00:42:33.15 he wants to convert the paramedics. 00:42:33.15\00:42:36.05 Paul was being torn limb from limb in the temple 00:42:36.05\00:42:39.25 and the Romans rescued him. 00:42:39.25\00:42:40.59 Paul says to the Romans, 00:42:40.59\00:42:41.62 "Can I preach to them? I got a crowd." 00:42:41.62\00:42:44.19 And I kind of know the feeling. 00:42:44.19\00:42:45.36 Whenever I see a crowd, I think, 00:42:45.36\00:42:46.49 "Oh, man, where's the microphone." 00:42:46.49\00:42:48.90 You know, you want to preach. 00:42:48.90\00:42:51.03 And so he wants to go and they said, 00:42:51.03\00:42:52.13 "Paul, they will kill you in there. 00:42:52.13\00:42:54.37 They're all mad. 00:42:54.37\00:42:55.94 This whole rally is 00:42:55.94\00:42:57.01 because you are wrecking their business, 00:42:57.01\00:42:58.64 and you want to go preach to them?" 00:42:58.64\00:43:00.71 "Yeah, but I want to tell them why idols are so bad." 00:43:00.71\00:43:02.68 "These are the idol makers. 00:43:02.68\00:43:04.01 You sure you want to go in there?" 00:43:04.01\00:43:06.25 And they probably were wise 00:43:06.25\00:43:10.05 in telling Paul not to do that. 00:43:10.05\00:43:13.52 And they had this big commotion, 00:43:13.52\00:43:15.09 I don't have time to read it all. 00:43:15.09\00:43:16.19 For two hours, they're shouting, 00:43:16.19\00:43:17.83 'Great is Diana of the Ephesians.'" 00:43:17.83\00:43:20.10 And finally, you get one of the officials 00:43:20.10\00:43:24.10 in the community says... 00:43:24.10\00:43:25.27 He calms everyone down, he says, "What's going on here? 00:43:25.27\00:43:28.04 What kind of uproar is this? 00:43:28.04\00:43:29.10 This is the Romanly governed community. 00:43:29.10\00:43:31.51 We have laws. 00:43:31.51\00:43:32.77 If the silversmith have something against others, 00:43:32.77\00:43:35.64 the courts are open. 00:43:35.64\00:43:36.98 File a claim, they can do it in an orderly matter. 00:43:36.98\00:43:40.88 See, there's no excuse for this raucous concourses riot." 00:43:40.88\00:43:45.32 And he speaks very reasonably. 00:43:45.32\00:43:48.59 You know, Romans had some good laws. 00:43:48.59\00:43:50.63 Matter of affect, even some of the American laws 00:43:50.63\00:43:53.50 are based on Greco-Roman laws. 00:43:53.50\00:43:56.06 We've got a Senate, we've got a Congress, right? 00:43:56.06\00:43:58.70 And so, he settles them all down. 00:43:58.70\00:44:02.64 They had a representative government, 00:44:02.64\00:44:04.14 they had courts, 00:44:04.14\00:44:05.51 and he dismisses the assembly, but it turned into a riot 00:44:05.51\00:44:10.88 because of Paul's preaching. 00:44:10.88\00:44:11.95 All right, journeys in Greece. 00:44:11.95\00:44:13.72 We're going to move on, chapter 20. 00:44:13.72\00:44:16.45 And. 00:44:16.45\00:44:18.22 If you look in... 00:44:18.22\00:44:20.42 We're talking about Troas now. 00:44:20.42\00:44:22.26 Acts 20:7, let's jump here to Eutychus. 00:44:22.26\00:44:25.56 This is a great story, 00:44:25.56\00:44:28.80 "And now on the first day of the week, 00:44:28.80\00:44:30.27 when the disciples came together to break bread..." 00:44:30.27\00:44:32.40 Now what does that mean? 00:44:32.40\00:44:33.87 First day of the week, that's Sunday, huh? 00:44:33.87\00:44:36.57 Disciples come together to have a communion service. 00:44:36.57\00:44:39.21 There you got it. 00:44:39.21\00:44:40.44 Saturday has been changed to Sunday. 00:44:40.44\00:44:43.81 This is the verse I often hear when people say, 00:44:43.81\00:44:46.92 "We can prove, the apostles were keeping 00:44:46.92\00:44:48.78 the Sunday as a day of worship." 00:44:48.78\00:44:50.62 Because here you have it, the disciples came together 00:44:50.62\00:44:52.72 on the first day of the week to break bread. 00:44:52.72\00:44:54.92 Keep reading. 00:44:54.92\00:44:56.16 I've heard pastors just read that one spot and they stop. 00:44:56.16\00:44:59.46 "Paul, ready to depart the next day..." 00:44:59.46\00:45:03.57 It says he continued his messaged until midnight. 00:45:03.57\00:45:06.00 Now first of all, let me ask you this, 00:45:06.00\00:45:07.80 during this meeting, is it day or night? 00:45:07.80\00:45:10.47 Night. 00:45:10.47\00:45:11.54 When does the day begin biblically? 00:45:11.54\00:45:14.84 When the sun goes down. 00:45:14.84\00:45:16.21 So when it says, 00:45:16.21\00:45:17.31 "They got together on the first day of the week, 00:45:17.31\00:45:20.12 they have an evening meeting. 00:45:20.12\00:45:21.38 They've been together all day Sabbath. 00:45:21.38\00:45:23.75 They gather that Sunday evening 00:45:23.75\00:45:25.85 'cause why Paul is going to leave the next day, 00:45:25.85\00:45:28.69 it's his last chance to build them up 00:45:28.69\00:45:31.13 before he leaves, 00:45:31.13\00:45:32.19 they're also going to break bread, 00:45:32.19\00:45:33.50 but isn't that a communion service? 00:45:33.50\00:45:35.33 No. 00:45:35.33\00:45:36.63 Go ahead and read for us, Dan, Acts 2:46. 00:45:36.63\00:45:41.24 I know I didn't give the cameras a chance 00:45:41.24\00:45:43.30 to track in on you but... 00:45:43.30\00:45:44.47 Acts 2:46, 00:45:44.47\00:45:46.47 "So continuing daily with one accord in the temple 00:45:46.47\00:45:49.54 and breaking bread from house to house, 00:45:49.54\00:45:52.05 they ate their food with gladness 00:45:52.05\00:45:53.58 and simplicity of heart." 00:45:53.58\00:45:55.48 Breaking bread, they ate their food, 00:45:55.48\00:45:58.52 not all breaking bread is a religious ceremony. 00:45:58.52\00:46:00.69 The Bible uses the word breaking bread, 00:46:00.69\00:46:02.59 talking about eating. 00:46:02.59\00:46:04.16 Jesus broke bread with the disciples on the road 00:46:04.16\00:46:06.83 to Emmaus, that story. 00:46:06.83\00:46:08.33 They were just eating together, not every time 00:46:08.33\00:46:10.43 they eat was it a religious ceremony. 00:46:10.43\00:46:12.53 It just means they're going to break bread. 00:46:12.53\00:46:14.30 Keep reading here, go back to the Eutychus story, 00:46:14.30\00:46:17.01 It says, "There were many lamps with them in the upper chamber 00:46:17.01\00:46:20.31 where they were gathered together. 00:46:20.31\00:46:22.11 And in the window, sat a certain young man 00:46:22.11\00:46:24.01 named Eutychus who was sinking into a deep sleep, 00:46:24.01\00:46:28.22 and he was overcome by sleep as Paul continued speaking." 00:46:28.22\00:46:31.49 Now that could be either a sermon about not sleeping 00:46:31.49\00:46:34.09 during church, he could fall out the window 00:46:34.09\00:46:35.62 or it could be a lesson to ministers 00:46:35.62\00:46:37.26 not to preach too long or people will fall asleep 00:46:37.26\00:46:39.69 and fall out the window. 00:46:39.69\00:46:42.40 Either way, there's a lesson there. 00:46:42.40\00:46:45.17 And Paul went down, 00:46:45.17\00:46:46.60 "He fell out the window, he's taken up dead." 00:46:46.60\00:46:48.00 He dies. 00:46:48.00\00:46:49.57 "And Paul went down and fell on him 00:46:49.57\00:46:51.21 and embraced him and said, 00:46:51.21\00:46:52.37 'Do not trouble yourselves for his life is in him.'" 00:46:52.37\00:46:55.01 Paul embraced him just like when Elijah to Elisha embraced 00:46:55.01\00:47:00.82 two different times. 00:47:00.82\00:47:01.98 They each embraced a boy, they touched the boy 00:47:01.98\00:47:04.09 that had died, and they were resurrected. 00:47:04.09\00:47:06.32 And Paul does... 00:47:06.32\00:47:07.42 He's got the same power of Elijah and the Elisha. 00:47:07.42\00:47:10.36 And this greatly encouraged the church there, 00:47:10.36\00:47:13.13 that was in Chios. 00:47:13.13\00:47:14.60 But Paul went down, he fell on him, 00:47:14.60\00:47:16.77 "And they came up, and they broke bread." 00:47:16.77\00:47:18.07 Here, they're breaking bread again. 00:47:18.07\00:47:19.80 They had eaten, and he talked a long while 00:47:19.80\00:47:21.87 even till daybreak, and he departed. 00:47:21.87\00:47:24.44 And they brought the young man alive, 00:47:24.44\00:47:26.07 and they were not a little comforted." 00:47:26.07\00:47:27.28 It mentions a young man at the end of the story, 00:47:27.28\00:47:29.41 why is this story in the Bible? 00:47:29.41\00:47:30.98 Is this story there to tell us, 'This is the story 00:47:30.98\00:47:33.88 where they inaugurate a new day as a Sabbath." 00:47:33.88\00:47:37.69 It's not at all what it's saying. 00:47:37.69\00:47:38.75 That's a dishonest interpretation of the verse. 00:47:38.75\00:47:41.12 It's saying they had been together all day Sabbath, 00:47:41.12\00:47:43.59 after the first day of the week began in the evening, 00:47:43.59\00:47:46.39 Paul is making his final presentation to him, 00:47:46.39\00:47:49.16 it's what we would call Saturday night. 00:47:49.16\00:47:52.17 They're just coming together 00:47:52.17\00:47:53.34 to have an evening meal of vespers, 00:47:53.34\00:47:55.94 doesn't say it's a religious service. 00:47:55.94\00:47:57.34 And you know what? 00:47:57.34\00:47:58.51 It doesn't matter even if it was a religious service. 00:47:58.51\00:48:00.88 What day of the week was the first communion? 00:48:00.88\00:48:04.98 Was it Sabbath? 00:48:04.98\00:48:06.41 Was it Friday? 00:48:06.41\00:48:07.55 It's Thursday. 00:48:07.55\00:48:09.02 So is there anything in the Bible that says 00:48:09.02\00:48:10.95 that if you break bread, it has to be on the Sabbath? 00:48:10.95\00:48:14.02 No, it could be any day of the week. 00:48:14.02\00:48:16.02 So to use this verse to say, "This is the inauguration 00:48:16.02\00:48:18.63 of a new Sabbath," 00:48:18.63\00:48:20.30 is, I think, a very weak and it's frankly 00:48:20.30\00:48:22.50 a very dishonest text to use. 00:48:22.50\00:48:24.77 This story is in the Bible to tell us Eutychus died, 00:48:24.77\00:48:28.04 Paul resurrected him. 00:48:28.04\00:48:29.14 It ends by saying they were not a little comforted 00:48:29.14\00:48:31.97 that the young boy survived. 00:48:31.97\00:48:33.68 Amen? 00:48:33.68\00:48:34.74 I mean, what a... 00:48:34.74\00:48:35.98 I mean, you think about God 00:48:35.98\00:48:37.08 speaking the Sabbath from the mountain, 00:48:37.08\00:48:38.91 "Remember the Sabbath day," and they say, 00:48:38.91\00:48:40.52 "Yeah, this is the place 00:48:40.52\00:48:41.58 where you find Him changing it." 00:48:41.58\00:48:43.95 That'd be a very mild way to change 00:48:43.95\00:48:46.12 one of the commandments of God, 00:48:46.12\00:48:47.79 sort of a fleeting reference like this. 00:48:47.79\00:48:50.09 So that's not what this is talking about. 00:48:50.09\00:48:52.36 All right, I got time for maybe a little bit more. 00:48:52.36\00:48:55.26 Miletus, Acts 20:15, 00:48:55.26\00:48:58.70 "And we sail from there, on the next day, 00:48:58.70\00:49:00.40 we came up opposite Chios. 00:49:00.40\00:49:03.77 The following day, we arrived at Samos 00:49:03.77\00:49:05.91 and stayed at Trogyllium, and the next day, 00:49:05.91\00:49:08.94 we came to Miletus. 00:49:08.94\00:49:10.21 For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus 00:49:10.21\00:49:13.75 so he would not have to spend time in Asia, 00:49:13.75\00:49:16.05 for he was hurrying to be at Jerusalem, 00:49:16.05\00:49:18.02 if possible, on the day of Pentecost. 00:49:18.02\00:49:20.39 He's hastening back to Jerusalem, 00:49:20.39\00:49:22.46 he wants to be there 00:49:22.46\00:49:23.63 not only because he's bringing relief to the saints, 00:49:23.63\00:49:26.39 there was a famine also in Jerusalem. 00:49:26.39\00:49:28.00 There was great poverty, the saints were struggling, 00:49:28.00\00:49:31.03 he's bringing an offering with him. 00:49:31.03\00:49:33.27 And he also wants to be there for obviously Pentecost. 00:49:33.27\00:49:37.54 When was the Holy Spirit poured out? 00:49:37.54\00:49:40.58 Pentecost. What happened to Pentecost? 00:49:40.58\00:49:42.78 Devout Jews out of every nation under heaven were there, 00:49:42.78\00:49:45.95 what a great opportunity to preach to the devout Jews 00:49:45.95\00:49:48.78 that had come to Jerusalem for all over the Roman Empire, 00:49:48.78\00:49:51.39 indeed from Africa and Ethiopia, they'd come up, 00:49:51.39\00:49:54.46 and he's said, "Oh, man, 00:49:54.46\00:49:55.52 it'd be a great time to be there 00:49:55.52\00:49:56.59 and have an evangelistic meeting." 00:49:56.59\00:49:58.33 So he's trying to get there to witness and to celebrate 00:49:58.33\00:50:02.50 the Passover as well as to bring relief. 00:50:02.50\00:50:06.43 And, you know, 00:50:06.43\00:50:08.34 one of the most beautiful passages, 00:50:08.34\00:50:09.77 Dan, and you need to read this, 00:50:09.77\00:50:11.77 Acts 20:17-37. 00:50:11.77\00:50:16.24 I'll just read this to you, and I'll close with it. 00:50:16.24\00:50:18.75 He makes his last appeal. 00:50:18.75\00:50:20.22 From Miletus, he sent to Ephesus, 00:50:20.22\00:50:22.12 and he called for the elders of the church, 00:50:22.12\00:50:24.52 and when they came to him, he said, 'You know, 00:50:24.52\00:50:27.16 from the first day that I came to Asia, 00:50:27.16\00:50:29.06 in what manner I always lived among you, 00:50:29.06\00:50:31.89 serving the Lord with all humility 00:50:31.89\00:50:33.43 and many tears and trials, 00:50:33.43\00:50:34.73 which happened to me by the plotting of the Jews, 00:50:34.73\00:50:36.83 how I kept back nothing that was helpful 00:50:36.83\00:50:39.47 but proclaimed it to you, and taught publicly 00:50:39.47\00:50:42.10 and from house to house, 00:50:42.10\00:50:43.67 testifying to the Jews and the Greeks, 00:50:43.67\00:50:45.61 repentance towards God in faith towards our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:50:45.61\00:50:49.31 And see, now I go bound in spirit to Jerusalem 00:50:49.31\00:50:53.18 not knowing the things that will happen to me there, 00:50:53.18\00:50:55.18 except that the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, 00:50:55.18\00:50:58.99 saying that chains and tribulations await me.'" 00:50:58.99\00:51:02.89 Paul said, "I'm going to Jerusalem 00:51:02.89\00:51:04.23 even though I know what's going to happen to me." 00:51:04.23\00:51:06.33 Did Jesus say the same thing? 00:51:06.33\00:51:09.06 Did the disciples tried to talk Paul out of going to Jerusalem? 00:51:09.06\00:51:13.87 But he said, "There's nothing that can turn me away." 00:51:13.87\00:51:15.94 Did Peter try to talk Jesus out of going to Jerusalem? 00:51:15.94\00:51:19.77 And Jesus said, "Get behind Me, 00:51:19.77\00:51:21.08 Satan this is part of God's plan." 00:51:21.08\00:51:23.35 See, Paul knew God wanted him to go. 00:51:23.35\00:51:25.41 It was through his arrest 00:51:25.41\00:51:26.61 and his tribulations in Jerusalem, 00:51:26.61\00:51:28.18 he ended up going to Rome, 00:51:28.18\00:51:30.52 a number of miracles happened along the way. 00:51:30.52\00:51:32.65 There were many converts, 00:51:32.65\00:51:33.79 a whole island of Malta was converted through Paul. 00:51:33.79\00:51:36.83 He went to Rome, he ultimately preached 00:51:36.83\00:51:38.33 to Caesar's household. 00:51:38.33\00:51:39.86 He knew that God wanted this to happen. 00:51:39.86\00:51:41.90 He did more in prison through his trials... 00:51:41.90\00:51:44.73 Most of the letters you and I read, 00:51:44.73\00:51:45.93 Paul wrote in jail. 00:51:45.93\00:51:47.74 And so God had worked out all out. 00:51:47.74\00:51:49.67 Anyway, there's a lot more I could say about that, 00:51:49.67\00:51:51.34 but I got through 80% of the lesson. 00:51:51.34\00:51:54.91 So with that, I want to remind you, 00:51:54.91\00:51:56.24 we do have a special gift, 00:51:56.24\00:51:58.21 and it's called Three Steps to Heaven, 00:51:58.21\00:52:00.35 offer number 102. 00:52:00.35\00:52:01.92 If you like a 00:52:50.57\00:52:51.83 Visit aftv.org. 00:52:51.83\00:52:55.64 I'm here in the beautiful island nation of Fiji. 00:53:07.12\00:53:09.78 It's filled with exotic animals, 00:53:09.78\00:53:12.02 beautiful vegetation, and spectacular scenery. 00:53:12.02\00:53:15.46 The people here are some of the nicest in the world, 00:53:15.46\00:53:18.03 but it hasn't always been that way. 00:53:18.03\00:53:19.96 This was once known as the cannibal island. 00:53:19.96\00:53:24.17 The Fijian warriors were some of the fiercest 00:53:24.17\00:53:26.30 in the South Pacific and greatly feared. 00:53:26.30\00:53:28.40 You can understand why. 00:53:28.40\00:53:29.90 This is one of the weapons that they used 00:53:29.90\00:53:32.31 for breaking the neck of their adversaries. 00:53:32.31\00:53:35.14 And long before they were killing any missionaries, 00:53:35.14\00:53:37.18 they were fighting with 00:53:37.18\00:53:38.28 and killing and eating each other. 00:53:38.28\00:53:40.32 The fact is you go 00:53:40.32\00:53:41.42 to the different tourist locations 00:53:41.42\00:53:42.72 on the island, they'll sell you remakes 00:53:42.72\00:53:45.92 of some of the forks they used 00:53:45.92\00:53:47.59 for eating human brains. 00:53:47.59\00:53:51.06 In fact, there was one cannibal chief, 00:53:51.06\00:53:53.16 Ratu Udre Udre during the 1800s, 00:53:53.16\00:53:55.90 that is in the Guinness Book of World Records 00:53:55.90\00:53:57.80 for having killed and eaten the most victims. 00:53:57.80\00:54:00.84 He brags that every time he killed someone, 00:54:00.84\00:54:02.44 he set a stone side. 00:54:02.44\00:54:04.17 By the end of his life, 00:54:04.17\00:54:05.31 he had a pretty big pile of stones. 00:54:05.31\00:54:07.34 It's estimated, he ate somewhere 00:54:07.34\00:54:08.88 in the neighborhood of 900 people. 00:54:08.88\00:54:11.85 Oh, my. 00:54:11.85\00:54:14.52 You know, the Fijians were not the only ones 00:54:14.52\00:54:16.25 that had a monopoly on cannibalism. 00:54:16.25\00:54:18.32 In fact, the Bible says 00:54:18.32\00:54:19.55 that we are all capable of being cannibals. 00:54:19.55\00:54:22.69 Galatians 5:15 says, 00:54:22.69\00:54:24.39 "If we bite and devour one another, 00:54:24.39\00:54:26.39 we may end up consuming one another." 00:54:26.39\00:54:28.40 That's talking about destroying people's reputation 00:54:28.40\00:54:30.90 by mean gossip. 00:54:30.90\00:54:32.53 One famous missionary named Pattin, 00:54:32.53\00:54:34.57 when he was preparing to go to the Cannibal Isles, 00:54:34.57\00:54:37.07 his friends and family begged him not to go. 00:54:37.07\00:54:39.44 They said, 'You'll be eaten." 00:54:39.44\00:54:40.98 He said, "It doesn't matter to me if I die and I'm eaten 00:54:40.98\00:54:43.48 by worms or if God wills that I'm eaten by cannibals 00:54:43.48\00:54:46.45 as long as I'm doing the will of God." 00:54:46.45\00:54:48.68 Well, he went to the Cannibal Isles 00:54:48.68\00:54:50.59 and brought many to Christ and died peacefully 00:54:50.59\00:54:52.95 in his old age. 00:54:52.95\00:54:54.19 Some of the ancient cannibal cultures believed 00:54:54.19\00:54:56.32 that when you killed 00:54:56.32\00:54:57.36 and when you devoured your enemy, 00:54:57.36\00:54:58.86 you would somehow take within you 00:54:58.86\00:55:00.36 their spiritual strengths or powers. 00:55:00.36\00:55:02.70 But that's really absurd, 00:55:02.70\00:55:04.37 but there is a kind of cannibalism 00:55:04.37\00:55:06.50 endorsed in scripture. 00:55:06.50\00:55:07.74 That's right. 00:55:07.74\00:55:08.80 Jesus said in John 6:53, 00:55:08.80\00:55:11.67 "Except you eat My flesh and drink My blood, 00:55:11.67\00:55:14.71 you have no life in you." 00:55:14.71\00:55:16.18 And you don't need these tools to do it. 00:55:16.18\00:55:18.15 What you need is to read His Word 00:55:18.15\00:55:20.25 and learn about His life, 00:55:20.25\00:55:21.58 accept by faith His sacrifice in your place, 00:55:21.58\00:55:24.05 and you can have a new heart and be a new creature. 00:55:24.05\00:55:26.79 You can even do it right now. 00:55:26.79\00:55:28.66 Did you know that Noah was present 00:55:36.53\00:55:38.23 at the birth of Abraham? 00:55:38.23\00:55:39.93 Okay, maybe he wasn't in the room, 00:55:39.93\00:55:42.50 but he was alive and probably telling stories 00:55:42.50\00:55:45.04 about his floating zoo. 00:55:45.04\00:55:47.08 From the creation of the world 00:55:47.08\00:55:48.64 to the last day events of Revelation, 00:56:04.96\00:56:06.86 On several occasions, scientists have demonstrated 00:56:18.57\00:56:21.88 that people, and even creatures, 00:56:21.88\00:56:23.58 can struggle with the depression 00:56:23.58\00:56:25.21 when exposed to continual darkness. 00:56:25.21\00:56:27.92 This can be seen every year in the winter months 00:56:27.92\00:56:29.92 in the Arctic regions. 00:56:29.92\00:56:32.62 The beautiful village of Rjukan, Norway 00:56:32.62\00:56:34.79 is situated in a deep valley where mountains 00:56:34.79\00:56:37.46 block the sun's rays for about six months every year. 00:56:37.46\00:56:40.70 This, of course, keeps the 3,400 residents 00:56:40.70\00:56:43.40 in a state of shade 00:56:43.40\00:56:44.83 and sometimes depressing darkness throughout the winter. 00:56:44.83\00:56:48.34 Then the town leaders got a bright idea 00:56:48.34\00:56:50.61 to help illuminate their village 00:56:50.61\00:56:51.94 during the murky months. 00:56:51.94\00:56:54.04 In October, 2013, Rjukan installed on array 00:56:54.04\00:56:58.21 of three gigantic 550 square foot mirrors 00:56:58.21\00:57:02.22 on the nearby mountain, a 1,000 feet above the town. 00:57:02.22\00:57:06.42 The computer control and solar-powered mirrors 00:57:06.42\00:57:09.42 track the sun through the winter months 00:57:09.42\00:57:11.69 and reflect that giant beam of sunshine 00:57:11.69\00:57:14.46 down to the Town Square brightening their lives. 00:57:14.46\00:57:18.00 If you visit Rjukan in the winter months today, 00:57:18.00\00:57:20.90 you can often see the people gathered or sitting on benches 00:57:20.90\00:57:23.84 around the Town Square bathing in the reflected sun shining. 00:57:23.84\00:57:28.24 Like those mirrors on the mountain, 00:57:28.24\00:57:30.31 the Bible says that 00:57:30.31\00:57:31.35 Christians are to reflect the light of Jesus 00:57:31.35\00:57:33.52 who is the light of the world into this dark planet. 00:57:33.52\00:57:36.48 Matthew 5:14 says, 00:57:36.48\00:57:38.32 "You are the light of the world. 00:57:38.32\00:57:39.99 A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 00:57:39.99\00:57:42.76 Nor do we light a lamp and put it under a basket, 00:57:42.76\00:57:45.49 but on a lampstand, 00:57:45.49\00:57:46.90 and it illuminates everybody in the house. 00:57:46.90\00:57:49.76 Let your light so shine before men 00:57:49.76\00:57:52.07 that they may see your good works 00:57:52.07\00:57:53.77 and glorify your Father in Heaven." 00:57:53.77\00:57:56.27 So, friends, use today 00:57:56.27\00:57:58.04 to brighten the life of someone else 00:57:58.04\00:58:00.14 by reflecting Jesus. 00:58:00.14\00:58:01.31
