Happy Sabbath. 00:05:53.08\00:05:56.38 Glad that you're with us both online 00:05:56.38\00:05:58.72 and of course here at Granite Bay. 00:05:58.72\00:06:01.72 I was doing some research. 00:06:01.72\00:06:03.46 Did you realize that 00:06:03.46\00:06:04.86 there are roughly 00:06:04.86\00:06:06.33 a half of million people 00:06:06.33\00:06:11.93 living in the United States that were immigrants in 1780? 00:06:11.93\00:06:17.57 Now you realize of course we had to hold 00:06:17.57\00:06:18.91 the Native American population 00:06:18.91\00:06:20.44 which added a whole bunch more. 00:06:20.44\00:06:21.61 But actually immigrants, I'm speaking of those 00:06:21.61\00:06:23.14 who came over, 00:06:23.14\00:06:24.58 a roughly a half of million, that will be 500,000. 00:06:24.58\00:06:28.72 Of those 500,000, 00:06:28.72\00:06:30.19 roughly 50,000 came involuntarily. 00:06:30.19\00:06:36.39 You know what that means. 00:06:36.39\00:06:38.29 They came, no, not as slaves, they came as prisoners. 00:06:38.29\00:06:41.76 I'm not quite sure all the details with that 00:06:41.76\00:06:43.40 but have to do some more. 00:06:43.40\00:06:44.87 And then the remaining 450,000 roughly one half of them 00:06:44.87\00:06:50.67 came as an indentured servant. 00:06:50.67\00:06:53.17 I just wanted to share a little bit about that, 00:06:53.17\00:06:55.04 it mean I had to realize that that half of those 00:06:55.04\00:06:58.88 who came voluntarily actually came 00:06:58.88\00:07:01.52 as an indentured servant. 00:07:01.52\00:07:02.98 That was before 1750. 00:07:02.98\00:07:05.75 Now the reason was often to pay your passage, 00:07:05.75\00:07:08.69 you want to come over to the new world 00:07:08.69\00:07:10.33 and so you were hoping that someone would pay your way 00:07:10.33\00:07:13.43 and so you would promise to work 00:07:13.43\00:07:14.66 five years for them 00:07:14.66\00:07:16.77 if they would pay your way over. 00:07:16.77\00:07:19.03 Sometimes it was a businessman who was living in, 00:07:19.03\00:07:22.04 say in Virginia, New York, Massachusetts would say, 00:07:22.04\00:07:26.34 I would bring my relatives' children over 00:07:26.34\00:07:29.68 and they're going to work for me 00:07:29.68\00:07:31.11 for five years or ten years whatever the agreement was 00:07:31.11\00:07:34.28 and then they will have their, you know, 00:07:34.28\00:07:35.68 their freedom over here. 00:07:35.68\00:07:37.69 Fifty percent almost of those who came here before 1750, 00:07:37.69\00:07:41.62 this was a somewhat of their experience. 00:07:41.62\00:07:44.83 Now, of course, if it was your uncle 00:07:44.83\00:07:46.23 who paid your passage over, 00:07:46.23\00:07:47.30 your life might have been little bit easier. 00:07:47.30\00:07:50.13 But there were a lot 00:07:50.13\00:07:51.43 who didn't have that kind of experience. 00:07:51.43\00:07:53.00 In fact, probably more or the majority 00:07:53.00\00:07:54.20 of the indentured servants 00:07:54.20\00:07:55.27 were not coming from that perspective. 00:07:55.27\00:07:58.77 There was no control over 00:07:58.77\00:08:00.04 how many hours a week you worked. 00:08:00.04\00:08:02.71 There was no control on what age 00:08:02.71\00:08:04.65 you had to be to do certain things. 00:08:04.65\00:08:07.48 And there was no guarantee 00:08:07.48\00:08:10.65 that someone might say, you know what? 00:08:10.65\00:08:13.09 It was not uncommon that 00:08:13.09\00:08:14.46 maybe someone would get pregnant 00:08:14.46\00:08:15.89 in the middle of their indenturedness. 00:08:15.89\00:08:17.89 I can use that term, 00:08:17.89\00:08:18.96 I don't know if that's the correct term. 00:08:18.96\00:08:20.03 But they got pregnant in the midst of it 00:08:20.03\00:08:21.20 and he said, 00:08:21.20\00:08:22.20 "Okay, well, you can go through the pregnancy, 00:08:22.20\00:08:23.87 have the baby and we're just gonna add 00:08:23.87\00:08:25.17 two years to yours term, 00:08:25.17\00:08:26.47 that way you can fulfill your obligation to us." 00:08:26.47\00:08:29.67 So this is the thinking of indentured servant. 00:08:29.67\00:08:31.37 Now, why are we discussing, 00:08:31.37\00:08:32.44 why am I bringing up indentured servant 00:08:32.44\00:08:33.94 when I'm about to discuss Romans 7? 00:08:33.94\00:08:36.68 There's a reason for it. 00:08:36.68\00:08:37.98 You turn your Bibles with me to Romans 7, 00:08:37.98\00:08:40.02 we're gonna look at verses 1 through 6. 00:08:40.02\00:08:43.42 Romans 7:1-6. 00:08:43.42\00:08:46.92 While you're turning there, I like to state a few thoughts 00:08:46.92\00:08:48.92 that might be helpful. 00:08:48.92\00:08:50.66 When you fulfilled your obligation 00:08:50.66\00:08:53.23 as an indentured servant you were free. 00:08:53.23\00:08:56.36 It's simple. 00:08:56.36\00:08:58.30 When you fulfilled your obligation 00:08:58.30\00:09:00.30 as an indentured servant you were free. 00:09:00.30\00:09:03.20 So fulfillment of the obligation 00:09:03.20\00:09:05.51 gave freedom from that obligation. 00:09:05.51\00:09:09.04 Is that confusing or did that make sense? 00:09:09.04\00:09:11.55 Fulfillment of the obligation gave you freedom 00:09:11.55\00:09:14.22 from the obligation. 00:09:14.22\00:09:15.92 So no longer you're under that obligation 00:09:15.92\00:09:17.79 because you're free from it 'cause it's been fulfilled. 00:09:17.79\00:09:21.02 A very important point. 00:09:21.02\00:09:23.36 Do you realize, you and I 00:09:23.36\00:09:26.53 as a result of sin have an obligation. 00:09:26.53\00:09:31.37 It's a terrible obligation. 00:09:31.37\00:09:34.07 Romans 6:23 and we were... 00:09:34.07\00:09:37.77 Actually Romans 3:23, I jumped ahead of myself. 00:09:37.77\00:09:40.24 Says, "The wages of sin is death." 00:09:40.24\00:09:43.41 The obligation of us 00:09:43.41\00:09:46.01 is not that of an indentured servant. 00:09:46.01\00:09:49.22 We are not free until we die 00:09:49.22\00:09:51.42 which is the obligation of a slave. 00:09:51.42\00:09:52.82 Does that make sense? 00:09:52.82\00:09:54.02 You see the difference. 00:09:54.02\00:09:56.36 We have an obligation. 00:09:56.36\00:09:58.36 And the only way we can be free from that obligation 00:09:58.36\00:10:02.20 is when that obligation is fulfilled. 00:10:02.20\00:10:05.37 And that obligation was filled, praise God 00:10:05.37\00:10:07.97 in the death of our Savior, Jesus Christ. 00:10:07.97\00:10:10.77 He fulfilled an obligation for us 00:10:10.77\00:10:13.27 that if we accept it, 00:10:13.27\00:10:14.71 we can reap the benefits of freedom 00:10:14.71\00:10:17.05 from that obligation. 00:10:17.05\00:10:19.31 That stood out as something positive 00:10:19.31\00:10:20.62 because Romans 7 has its tendencies 00:10:20.62\00:10:22.92 that would not be terribly positive 00:10:22.92\00:10:24.12 as we go through it. 00:10:24.12\00:10:25.19 Romans 7, what verses we are turning to? 00:10:25.19\00:10:30.09 1-7. 00:10:30.09\00:10:31.36 1-6, excuse me. 00:10:31.36\00:10:33.90 "Know ye not, brethren, 00:10:33.90\00:10:36.23 for I speak to them that know the law, 00:10:36.23\00:10:38.77 how that the law hath dominion over a man 00:10:38.77\00:10:42.97 as long as he lives?" 00:10:42.97\00:10:45.41 You know when I first started reading this, 00:10:45.41\00:10:47.44 that stuck out in my mind just a little bit. 00:10:47.44\00:10:51.81 Haven't we just read that somewhere 00:10:51.81\00:10:53.78 about dominion, remember last week? 00:10:53.78\00:10:56.42 Romans 6, when we are looking at Romans 6:14 says, 00:10:56.42\00:11:00.59 "For sin shall not have dominion over you, 00:11:00.59\00:11:03.59 for you are not under the law but under grace." 00:11:03.59\00:11:06.19 Now I'm seeing here in Romans 7, 00:11:06.19\00:11:08.53 "Know ye not, brethren, for I speak to them 00:11:08.53\00:11:10.00 that know the law, how that the..." 00:11:10.00\00:11:12.70 What has dominion here? 00:11:12.70\00:11:14.30 "The law has dominion." 00:11:14.30\00:11:16.24 Now they are almost been used, 00:11:16.24\00:11:19.77 they are not the same in anyway shape or form, 00:11:19.77\00:11:22.44 but sometimes you get the feel that 00:11:22.44\00:11:23.95 Paul is using these anonymously. 00:11:23.95\00:11:25.38 He is not. 00:11:25.38\00:11:27.65 But in Romans 6, 00:11:27.65\00:11:29.65 I'm getting freedom from what? 00:11:29.65\00:11:32.25 Sin. 00:11:32.25\00:11:34.32 Romans 7, 00:11:34.32\00:11:35.59 I'm getting freedom from what? 00:11:35.59\00:11:37.13 Yes, kind of, right? 00:11:40.96\00:11:43.63 So let's go. 00:11:43.63\00:11:45.97 "Know ye not, brethren, 00:11:45.97\00:11:47.44 for I speak to them that know the law." 00:11:47.44\00:11:49.14 He is speaking to those 00:11:49.14\00:11:50.21 who are familiar with the Jewish system. 00:11:50.21\00:11:52.04 "How that the law have dominion over a man 00:11:52.04\00:11:54.24 as long as he lives?" 00:11:54.24\00:11:55.51 And then verse 2 and 3 is a great illustration. 00:11:55.51\00:11:58.65 "For the woman which hath an husband 00:11:58.65\00:12:02.02 is bound by the law to her husband 00:12:02.02\00:12:04.09 so long as he lives, 00:12:04.09\00:12:05.65 but if the husband be dead, 00:12:05.65\00:12:07.72 she is loosed from the law of her husband. 00:12:07.72\00:12:10.63 So then if, while her husband lives, 00:12:10.63\00:12:13.63 she be married to another man, 00:12:13.63\00:12:15.73 she shall be called an adulteress: 00:12:15.73\00:12:18.63 but if her husband be dead, she is" what? 00:12:18.63\00:12:21.47 She is free from what? 00:12:21.47\00:12:23.37 "That law. 00:12:23.37\00:12:24.54 So that she is no adulterous 00:12:24.54\00:12:26.21 though she be married to another man. 00:12:26.21\00:12:28.28 Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become..." 00:12:28.28\00:12:32.68 What's the next word? 00:12:32.68\00:12:33.72 "Dead." 00:12:33.72\00:12:34.82 Dead and this gonna be our focus. 00:12:34.82\00:12:36.12 We'll try to explain this 00:12:36.12\00:12:37.19 as we finish reading the section. 00:12:37.19\00:12:38.89 "Ye also become dead to" what? 00:12:38.89\00:12:42.06 "The law by the body of Christ, 00:12:42.06\00:12:45.29 that you should be married to another, 00:12:45.29\00:12:47.50 even to him who is raised from the dead, 00:12:47.50\00:12:49.93 that we should bring forth fruit unto God." 00:12:49.93\00:12:52.77 Then verse 5 and 6. 00:12:52.77\00:12:54.77 "For when we were in the flesh, 00:12:54.77\00:12:56.81 the motions of sins or the passions of sins, 00:12:56.81\00:13:01.91 which were by or through the law, 00:13:01.91\00:13:04.55 did work in our members or body 00:13:04.55\00:13:07.15 to bring forth fruit unto death." 00:13:07.15\00:13:09.85 "But now, we are..." 00:13:09.85\00:13:12.15 What's that next word? 00:13:12.15\00:13:14.29 Delivered. "Delivered. 00:13:14.29\00:13:16.29 Set free from the law 00:13:16.29\00:13:19.93 that being dead wherein we were held, 00:13:19.93\00:13:24.00 that we should serve in newness of spirit, 00:13:24.00\00:13:27.40 and not in oldness of letter." 00:13:27.40\00:13:31.14 I want to take some time 00:13:31.14\00:13:32.24 just to unpack those first six verses 00:13:32.24\00:13:34.38 because they are a key I think 00:13:34.38\00:13:35.61 to understanding the rest of chapter 7. 00:13:35.61\00:13:39.71 But I'm gonna do it backwards, is that okay? 00:13:39.71\00:13:42.22 We are not going to start in verse 1, 00:13:42.22\00:13:43.59 I'm gonna start in verse 6. 00:13:43.59\00:13:45.75 Let's look at verse 6. 00:13:45.75\00:13:47.32 And we ask a few questions as I go through verse 6. 00:13:47.32\00:13:51.09 What happens? 00:13:54.56\00:13:55.86 But now we are... 00:13:55.86\00:13:58.03 I'm looking at verse 6, 00:13:58.03\00:13:59.13 "But now we are delivered from the law." 00:13:59.13\00:14:03.41 Why the word delivered? 00:14:03.41\00:14:07.38 Why would we use the word delivered? 00:14:07.38\00:14:09.34 It means set free. Yes. 00:14:09.34\00:14:12.98 So now we are set free from the law. 00:14:12.98\00:14:16.99 And then it says this next part, 00:14:16.99\00:14:18.89 found it fascinating, 00:14:18.89\00:14:20.39 that being dead, or another way is seen is 00:14:20.39\00:14:23.56 being dead to that "wherein we were held. 00:14:23.56\00:14:28.53 "Being dead to that wherein we were held." 00:14:28.53\00:14:31.20 What were we held? 00:14:31.20\00:14:32.53 What was holding us? 00:14:32.53\00:14:34.00 The law was. 00:14:34.00\00:14:36.00 I'm being set free from the law because the law was holding me 00:14:36.00\00:14:39.87 or can I say it in this way, was holding me captive. 00:14:39.87\00:14:43.91 Is that a picture here? 00:14:43.91\00:14:45.81 So the law was holding me captive 00:14:45.81\00:14:49.72 and I'm being delivered from that law 00:14:49.72\00:14:52.99 that's holding me captive. 00:14:52.99\00:14:55.46 I find that interesting. 00:14:55.46\00:14:59.83 Are you being held captive by the law? 00:14:59.83\00:15:03.93 Are you...? I may rephrase it. 00:15:03.93\00:15:06.07 Are you under condemnation of the law? 00:15:06.07\00:15:10.21 Are you guilty? 00:15:10.21\00:15:12.44 You see the picture that's being laid out here. 00:15:12.44\00:15:15.54 There it says that we... 00:15:15.54\00:15:17.38 It says but now we are delivered from, 00:15:17.38\00:15:18.65 praise God, right? 00:15:18.65\00:15:22.25 "That we should serve in newness of spirit, 00:15:22.25\00:15:27.42 and not in oldness of letter." 00:15:27.42\00:15:31.49 I'm not allowed to talk about that yet 00:15:35.23\00:15:36.56 according to my notes, sorry. 00:15:36.56\00:15:38.37 So let's go back to verse 2 and 3. 00:15:38.37\00:15:40.50 Keep your point there. 00:15:40.50\00:15:41.80 The point is, we are delivered from the law 00:15:41.80\00:15:46.31 because we were held in bondage to the law, why? 00:15:46.31\00:15:49.34 Because we were guilty. Isn't that right? 00:15:49.34\00:15:51.01 Once you've broken the law, 00:15:51.01\00:15:52.18 you are now a servant to that law. 00:15:52.18\00:15:54.58 Actually you are servant to sin and held bondage by the law, 00:15:54.58\00:15:57.15 and we put those two separately, okay. 00:15:57.15\00:15:59.15 Let's go back to verse 2 and 3. 00:15:59.15\00:16:01.02 Verse 2 and 3, the marriage analogy 00:16:01.02\00:16:02.86 that Paul is using here in verse 2 and 3, fascinating. 00:16:02.86\00:16:06.73 "For the woman which hath an husband 00:16:06.73\00:16:08.96 is bound by the law 00:16:08.96\00:16:12.57 to her husband so long as he lives, 00:16:12.57\00:16:14.70 but if the husband be dead, 00:16:14.70\00:16:15.74 she is loosed from the law of her husband." 00:16:15.74\00:16:17.71 In other words, she is married to her husband 00:16:17.71\00:16:22.58 and she is forced to stay married to him, 00:16:22.58\00:16:25.11 as long as he lives. 00:16:25.11\00:16:28.08 Pray for my wife. 00:16:28.08\00:16:30.99 Right? 00:16:30.99\00:16:32.05 I'd say pray for me 00:16:32.05\00:16:33.09 but you're not allowed to say that 00:16:33.09\00:16:34.16 when you are a speaker. 00:16:34.16\00:16:35.66 So pray for my wife. Amen? 00:16:35.66\00:16:38.46 I am bound to her, 00:16:38.46\00:16:39.63 she is bound to me because of what? 00:16:39.63\00:16:42.73 The law. That's the way it is. 00:16:42.73\00:16:45.00 We made a covenant with each other 00:16:45.00\00:16:47.84 and it's a binding covenant, 00:16:47.84\00:16:49.80 and we are staying connected. 00:16:49.80\00:16:51.67 That's the picture. 00:16:51.67\00:16:52.77 Now goes to verse 3, 00:16:52.77\00:16:55.41 and we'll not continue with the analogy 00:16:55.41\00:16:56.81 of myself at this point. 00:16:56.81\00:16:58.61 "So then if, while her husband lives, 00:16:58.61\00:17:00.95 she be married to another man, 00:17:00.95\00:17:02.32 she shall be called an adulteress." 00:17:02.32\00:17:04.02 If a wife spends time with someone 00:17:04.02\00:17:06.22 who is not her husband is considered adultery, 00:17:06.22\00:17:09.26 but when the husband dies 00:17:09.26\00:17:11.39 she can spend time with another man 00:17:11.39\00:17:13.29 and it's not considered adultery anymore 00:17:13.29\00:17:15.03 unless he is married. 00:17:15.03\00:17:16.06 Right? 00:17:16.06\00:17:18.53 It goes on and says... 00:17:18.53\00:17:21.07 Yeah, so that's a picture that's being laid out here. 00:17:21.07\00:17:26.11 Paul is trying to give us an understanding 00:17:26.11\00:17:28.28 that death brings freedom. 00:17:28.28\00:17:33.85 There is more that he is sharing, 00:17:33.85\00:17:34.92 but I want to emphasize that part 00:17:34.92\00:17:36.32 'cause that's the part I'm gonna emphasize 00:17:36.32\00:17:37.35 in this lesson. 00:17:37.35\00:17:38.42 Death brings what? 00:17:38.42\00:17:40.52 Freedom. 00:17:40.52\00:17:42.59 There is not freedom from a law. 00:17:42.59\00:17:45.73 Let me split it this way, 00:17:45.73\00:17:46.83 the bondage or the control of the law 00:17:46.83\00:17:49.16 or the being put in prison by that law 00:17:49.16\00:17:51.93 because you are being forced to do a certain thing. 00:17:51.93\00:17:54.20 You and I don't like saying force, do we? 00:17:54.20\00:17:56.37 Because the reality is I chose to be married. 00:17:56.37\00:18:00.04 It was a choice, 00:18:00.04\00:18:01.04 I'm very thankful for that choice. 00:18:01.04\00:18:03.78 But the reality is 00:18:03.78\00:18:05.25 I couldn't get out of it if I wanted to. 00:18:05.25\00:18:07.78 Spiritually speaking, 00:18:07.78\00:18:09.85 but that's okay because I chose to do that. 00:18:09.85\00:18:13.42 Do you realize so many things that we look at is freedom 00:18:13.42\00:18:16.16 are really not freedom, they are bondage. 00:18:16.16\00:18:17.83 And so many things we look at bondage really aren't bondage, 00:18:17.83\00:18:19.69 it's freedom. 00:18:19.69\00:18:20.90 Hope I confused you. 00:18:20.90\00:18:23.00 Really honestly 00:18:23.00\00:18:26.30 when we choose to put our self into something 00:18:26.30\00:18:29.20 that is bondage, 00:18:29.20\00:18:30.27 is it then bondage if we chose it? 00:18:30.27\00:18:34.88 Anyhow I digress. 00:18:34.88\00:18:37.98 Verse 4, "Wherefore, my brethren, 00:18:37.98\00:18:43.05 ye also are become dead to the law." 00:18:43.05\00:18:46.79 And this is the phrase that I really wanted us to focus on 00:18:46.79\00:18:49.72 because that's the first section here 00:18:49.72\00:18:51.26 in your quarterly. 00:18:51.26\00:18:52.63 "We are become dead to the law by the body of" who? 00:18:52.63\00:18:58.53 "We have become dead to the law by the body of Christ. 00:18:58.53\00:19:02.17 What does it mean to become dead to the law? 00:19:05.17\00:19:06.88 We already discussed that in verse 6, 00:19:06.88\00:19:08.81 it means to be delivered from the law. 00:19:08.81\00:19:13.28 Does the law become dead? 00:19:13.28\00:19:16.75 No. 00:19:16.75\00:19:17.95 Do we become dead? Yes. 00:19:17.95\00:19:20.46 How? 00:19:20.46\00:19:24.09 How do we become dead? 00:19:24.09\00:19:25.53 Biblically speaking you just read this last week. 00:19:25.53\00:19:28.13 How do you and I become dead? 00:19:28.13\00:19:30.30 Romans 6. 00:19:30.30\00:19:34.14 Yes, how do I become dead to sin? 00:19:34.14\00:19:35.94 Baptism. Yes, thank you, ma'am. 00:19:35.94\00:19:38.84 Baptism, I should say it 00:19:38.84\00:19:40.08 so those of you who are watching can hear it. 00:19:40.08\00:19:41.88 Romans 6:3 and 4 says, 00:19:41.88\00:19:47.85 "Know ye not, that so many of us 00:19:47.85\00:19:49.52 as were baptized into Jesus Christ 00:19:49.52\00:19:51.29 were baptized into" what? 00:19:51.29\00:19:52.75 "His death. 00:19:52.75\00:19:53.82 Therefore we are buried with him 00:19:53.82\00:19:55.29 by baptism into death." 00:19:55.29\00:19:58.39 That like as Christ was raised up from the dead 00:19:58.39\00:20:00.10 by the glory of the Father, 00:20:00.10\00:20:01.03 even so we also should walk in newness of life. 00:20:01.03\00:20:05.00 So I am dead when I'm connected with Christ, 00:20:05.00\00:20:09.60 He died so therefore I died. 00:20:09.60\00:20:14.01 His death then becomes mine. 00:20:14.01\00:20:17.85 And that is the beauty of Christianity. 00:20:17.85\00:20:20.02 His death becomes mine. 00:20:20.02\00:20:22.35 That's how I can experience life. 00:20:22.35\00:20:27.59 The Bible continues on 00:20:27.59\00:20:29.52 in this passage had a few more things 00:20:29.52\00:20:31.23 are being dead, verse 6 of Romans 6 00:20:31.23\00:20:35.23 "Knowing this, that our old man is" what? 00:20:35.23\00:20:40.10 Crucified with who? 00:20:40.10\00:20:42.94 With Him. 00:20:42.94\00:20:44.94 The way you and I die is by dying with Him. 00:20:44.94\00:20:49.41 Accepting His death on our behalf 00:20:49.41\00:20:53.11 and, yes, dying with Him. 00:20:53.11\00:20:56.48 It is only through death 00:20:56.48\00:20:58.42 that you and I can experience life. 00:20:58.42\00:21:01.42 Is the only way. 00:21:01.42\00:21:03.29 That's why you see in Romans 7 where we were just at, 00:21:03.29\00:21:06.96 and it says in verse 6, 00:21:06.96\00:21:09.86 "We should serve in newness of spirit, 00:21:09.86\00:21:11.73 and not oldness of letter." 00:21:11.73\00:21:13.64 That only takes place when there is a resurrection. 00:21:13.64\00:21:16.84 There's got to be a resurrection. 00:21:16.84\00:21:19.04 There's got to be a death, 00:21:19.04\00:21:20.64 there has to be a resurrection. 00:21:20.64\00:21:24.25 Let's continue, 00:21:24.25\00:21:26.82 verse 4 continued and said this, 00:21:26.82\00:21:31.09 "That you should be married to another" 00:21:31.09\00:21:32.75 so we die with Christ, 00:21:32.75\00:21:35.92 and then we can be remarried. 00:21:35.92\00:21:37.29 It's kind of interesting typically. 00:21:37.29\00:21:38.93 Okay, here's this scenario before, husband wife, 00:21:38.93\00:21:43.16 husband dies, wife can get remarried. 00:21:43.16\00:21:47.50 This is different, husband wife, 00:21:47.50\00:21:50.81 husband dies so he can be remarried. 00:21:50.81\00:21:53.14 Yeah, are you confused? 00:21:57.95\00:22:00.72 Spiritually that's what we are talking about here. 00:22:00.72\00:22:03.85 What we saw before in 2 and 3 is 00:22:03.85\00:22:05.99 the dead person now is gone 00:22:05.99\00:22:08.89 and alive person has freedom, 00:22:08.89\00:22:11.26 but in this case, we die and we have freedom. 00:22:11.26\00:22:17.73 Do you see that? 00:22:17.73\00:22:19.47 We die to the law 00:22:19.47\00:22:23.00 and now have freedom to remarry. 00:22:23.00\00:22:27.08 Who? 00:22:27.08\00:22:28.48 Jesus Christ, and I love the way 00:22:28.48\00:22:31.31 inspiration puts it here. 00:22:31.31\00:22:34.55 "That we should bring forth fruit unto God." 00:22:34.55\00:22:39.75 New marriage produces new fruit. 00:22:39.75\00:22:43.73 I know that's really deep, 00:22:46.56\00:22:48.26 heavy biological statement right there. 00:22:48.26\00:22:51.40 But new marriage produces new fruit. 00:22:51.40\00:22:55.57 We don't like to think about this 00:22:55.57\00:22:57.11 but this is a reality. 00:22:57.11\00:22:59.54 If you lost your spouse and you remarried, 00:22:59.54\00:23:04.95 your children would be different. 00:23:04.95\00:23:08.82 If you had new children 00:23:08.82\00:23:10.39 with the spouse that you got remarried to, 00:23:10.39\00:23:12.65 does it make sense? 00:23:12.65\00:23:14.49 It's the same thing in our lives, 00:23:14.49\00:23:17.46 when we are married 00:23:17.46\00:23:19.33 and actually Romans use the word 00:23:19.33\00:23:20.60 bondage to the law, the fruit isn't that good. 00:23:20.60\00:23:25.17 But when you and I remarry to Christ, 00:23:25.17\00:23:27.70 we have new fruit. 00:23:27.70\00:23:29.84 Is this a new phrase for Romans 7? 00:23:29.84\00:23:31.77 No, it's not. Go back to Romans 6. 00:23:31.77\00:23:35.24 Romans 6, 7 and 8, if you want to understand 7, 00:23:35.24\00:23:38.15 you have to understand 6, you have to understand 8, 00:23:38.15\00:23:40.18 they are together, internally connected. 00:23:40.18\00:23:42.55 I really wish that I was teaching next week. 00:23:42.55\00:23:45.45 Whoever teaches next week, God bless them. 00:23:45.45\00:23:47.82 They have all the fun part, now this is fun too 00:23:47.82\00:23:50.29 because we have a chance to see who we really are. 00:23:50.29\00:23:52.09 What Jesus can be to us, amen? 00:23:52.09\00:23:54.20 But let's continue, Romans 6, which verse did we mentioned? 00:23:54.20\00:23:59.13 6:22. 00:23:59.13\00:24:02.27 Let's go back to 6:22, we were in 7:4 right now 00:24:02.27\00:24:05.41 and we looked at 7:5, 00:24:05.41\00:24:06.94 we looked about the new fruit, right? 00:24:06.94\00:24:09.04 Actually that was verse 4, 00:24:09.04\00:24:12.21 "We bring forth fruit unto God." 00:24:12.21\00:24:13.35 Let's go back to 6:22, it says, 00:24:13.35\00:24:16.18 "But now being made free from sin, 00:24:16.18\00:24:19.85 and become servants to" whom? 00:24:19.85\00:24:21.89 "God, you have your fruit unto holiness, 00:24:21.89\00:24:23.83 and the end everlasting life." 00:24:23.83\00:24:25.23 So in Romans 7 we are using the marriage symbol. 00:24:25.23\00:24:28.93 In Romans 6 they are using a servant symbol. 00:24:28.93\00:24:33.17 But Romans 6, it says 00:24:33.17\00:24:34.60 when you become a servant to God, 00:24:34.60\00:24:36.37 Romans 7, when you say, 00:24:36.37\00:24:37.44 when you become married to Christ, 00:24:37.44\00:24:40.24 you have what kind of fruit? 00:24:40.24\00:24:43.21 Fruit unto holiness, or righteousness, 00:24:43.21\00:24:48.38 it's a new fruit. 00:24:48.38\00:24:50.69 I propose friends that 00:24:50.69\00:24:51.82 this is the whole issue of Romans 7, 00:24:51.82\00:24:55.69 who you are married to? 00:24:55.69\00:24:58.39 And what it looks like? 00:24:58.39\00:25:00.96 You know, in Romans 7 starting with verse 7, 00:25:00.96\00:25:02.93 actually verse 8 we are going to start to digress. 00:25:02.93\00:25:05.37 We're going to be looking at some things that had happened 00:25:05.37\00:25:07.24 that are not pleasant. 00:25:07.24\00:25:09.14 But in that digression 00:25:09.14\00:25:10.71 it's only simply a recapping of what we saw 00:25:10.71\00:25:12.87 in verses 1 through 6, this remarriage. 00:25:12.87\00:25:15.61 God wants us to have food unto holiness, 00:25:15.61\00:25:18.98 and it's impossible, friends, by yourself. 00:25:18.98\00:25:22.98 In fact, it's impossible of your self. 00:25:22.98\00:25:27.16 There is in you nothing that is good. 00:25:27.16\00:25:31.33 In fact, I will share a phrase with you 00:25:31.33\00:25:33.73 that we'll close up with. 00:25:33.73\00:25:37.43 Desire without power to acquire 00:25:37.43\00:25:42.84 is wretchedness. 00:25:42.84\00:25:45.64 Desire without power to acquire 00:25:45.64\00:25:49.64 is wretchedness. 00:25:49.64\00:25:50.71 Remember that because that's Romans 7. 00:25:50.71\00:25:52.55 That's the Romans 7 man 00:25:52.55\00:25:54.65 and we must realize that picture 00:25:54.65\00:25:56.32 as we come back to it, okay. 00:25:56.32\00:25:57.82 Let's look at verse 5, Romans 7:5, 00:26:02.26\00:26:08.76 "For when we were in the flesh the passions of sins, 00:26:08.76\00:26:13.10 which were by the law, 00:26:13.10\00:26:14.94 did work in our body or members 00:26:14.94\00:26:17.07 to bring forth fruit unto death." 00:26:17.07\00:26:18.94 So you're going to have fruit. 00:26:18.94\00:26:21.31 This is a fruit, a new fruit when you marry with Christ, 00:26:21.31\00:26:23.31 this is the old fruit, fruit that leads to death. 00:26:23.31\00:26:25.91 Is it possible to have fruit unto death? 00:26:30.92\00:26:35.02 Which I said so, 6:20, 00:26:35.02\00:26:38.46 I'm connecting 6 and 7 real quick. 00:26:38.46\00:26:40.90 I won't do this much longer but I'm gonna do little bit 00:26:40.90\00:26:42.66 just to show you the connection. 00:26:42.66\00:26:43.77 6:20, "When you were the servants of sin, 00:26:43.77\00:26:46.97 you were free from" what? 00:26:46.97\00:26:48.47 "Righteousness." 00:26:48.47\00:26:49.54 You know this by memory probably, verse 21, 00:26:49.54\00:26:51.71 what's the next phrase? 00:26:51.71\00:26:54.11 What's the next word? 00:26:54.11\00:26:55.21 "What fruit had you then in the things 00:26:55.21\00:26:58.08 whereof you are now ashamed? 00:26:58.08\00:26:59.15 For the end of those things is death." 00:26:59.15\00:27:00.82 When you are the servant of sin, 00:27:00.82\00:27:03.02 you have fruit to death. 00:27:03.02\00:27:05.99 When you are a servant of God, 00:27:05.99\00:27:08.56 you have a fruit unto righteousness. 00:27:08.56\00:27:10.26 That's Romans 6. 00:27:10.26\00:27:11.93 Now in Romans 7:4, 00:27:11.93\00:27:14.60 it tells me that when I'm married to Christ, 00:27:14.60\00:27:17.40 I have fruit unto God. 00:27:17.40\00:27:19.57 And verse 5 tells me that when I'm in the flesh, 00:27:19.57\00:27:24.67 I have fruit unto death. 00:27:24.67\00:27:30.05 Now I ask you a question. 00:27:30.05\00:27:33.92 What does it mean to be in the flesh 00:27:33.92\00:27:35.75 based upon what I just told you? 00:27:35.75\00:27:37.82 Actually based upon the word just teaching us. 00:27:37.82\00:27:40.32 Let me repeat it. 00:27:44.19\00:27:45.56 When I'm a servant to sin, I have fruit unto death. 00:27:45.56\00:27:50.03 When I'm a servant unto God, 00:27:50.03\00:27:52.27 I have fruit unto righteousness. 00:27:52.27\00:27:54.10 Romans 6. 00:27:54.10\00:27:55.57 Romans 7, when I'm a servant, I'm married to Christ, 00:27:55.57\00:27:59.41 I have fruit unto God. 00:27:59.41\00:28:01.84 When I'm in the flesh, I have fruit unto death. 00:28:01.84\00:28:08.45 Being in the flesh is synonymous 00:28:08.45\00:28:11.15 to being a servant to sin. 00:28:11.15\00:28:14.09 It's the same thing. 00:28:14.09\00:28:16.09 I know that sounds simple but we must grasp that 00:28:16.09\00:28:18.66 because that's an understanding of Romans 7. 00:28:18.66\00:28:21.43 If you want to be a servant... 00:28:21.43\00:28:24.07 If you have fruit that is to sin, 00:28:24.07\00:28:26.23 a fruit is unto death 00:28:26.23\00:28:27.57 is because you are a servant of sin 00:28:27.57\00:28:29.10 or you are fleshly. 00:28:29.10\00:28:31.21 Fleshly does not inherit the kingdom of God, it cannot. 00:28:31.21\00:28:37.05 It's impossible by the way. 00:28:37.05\00:28:41.85 Desire without power to acquire 00:28:41.85\00:28:46.19 is wretchedness. 00:28:46.19\00:28:50.06 Ever feel wretched? 00:28:50.06\00:28:53.09 You don't have to raise your hand, 00:28:53.09\00:28:54.13 I'll raise mine. 00:28:54.13\00:28:56.03 I've been there. 00:28:56.03\00:28:58.00 Because when I had longed for something 00:28:58.00\00:29:00.94 and I can't get it 00:29:00.94\00:29:02.34 and it's impossible for me to get it, 00:29:02.34\00:29:05.11 that's a wretched feeling. 00:29:05.11\00:29:06.64 Desire without ability or power to acquire. 00:29:09.71\00:29:12.25 Okay. 00:29:12.25\00:29:13.45 Let's go on verse 6. 00:29:13.45\00:29:15.92 Let's finish up verse 6. 00:29:15.92\00:29:17.75 I notice my time and so I'm going to continue. 00:29:17.75\00:29:20.26 Verse 6 says, "For now we are delivered from the law, 00:29:20.26\00:29:23.09 that being death wherein we were held." 00:29:23.09\00:29:26.26 And we talked about that, 00:29:26.26\00:29:27.50 I'm going to continue to the last part of this phrase, 00:29:27.50\00:29:29.63 "That we should serve in newness of spirit 00:29:29.63\00:29:34.00 and not in oldness of letter." 00:29:34.00\00:29:37.61 I would like to emphasize, 00:29:37.61\00:29:39.97 it is impossible to serve after you die 00:29:39.97\00:29:44.38 unless there is a resurrection. 00:29:44.38\00:29:46.28 If I go to a funeral 00:29:50.29\00:29:52.35 and I see a person who is dead lying there. 00:29:52.35\00:29:57.53 There's no way that they would ever serve. 00:29:57.53\00:30:01.20 That make sense? 00:30:01.20\00:30:02.80 It's impossible for them to serve. 00:30:02.80\00:30:05.17 How can a dead person serve? 00:30:05.17\00:30:06.63 Can a dead person get up and get you water? 00:30:06.63\00:30:10.07 No. 00:30:10.07\00:30:11.14 Would a dead person mow your lawn? 00:30:11.14\00:30:16.24 You are not sure. Well, let me tell you, no, no. 00:30:16.24\00:30:19.15 We just had Halloween this week, 00:30:19.15\00:30:20.45 I want to clarify, right, it's not happening. 00:30:20.45\00:30:23.95 Dead people don't have ability to accomplish anything, 00:30:23.95\00:30:28.42 unless there is what? 00:30:28.42\00:30:31.29 A resurrection. 00:30:31.29\00:30:32.53 You must have a resurrection or you don't have service. 00:30:32.53\00:30:36.23 Is that clear? 00:30:36.23\00:30:38.03 No resurrection, no service. 00:30:38.03\00:30:40.44 You must have a resurrection to have service. 00:30:40.44\00:30:42.77 So when you see this walking in newness of life, 00:30:42.77\00:30:45.11 oh, it's exciting, but what does it mean? 00:30:45.11\00:30:49.54 Can I go back to my last time? 00:30:49.54\00:30:51.55 Roman 6. Romans 6. 00:30:51.55\00:30:54.02 Do you see a resurrection anywhere last week 00:30:54.02\00:30:55.72 when we studied Romans 6? 00:30:55.72\00:30:58.92 I did. Yes. 00:30:58.92\00:31:01.36 Romans 6:4, 00:31:01.36\00:31:03.69 "Therefore we are buried with him 00:31:03.69\00:31:05.69 by baptism into death, that like as Christ was..." 00:31:05.69\00:31:10.83 What's that word? 00:31:10.83\00:31:12.30 "Raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, 00:31:12.30\00:31:14.74 even so we also should walk in newness of life." 00:31:14.74\00:31:17.54 Then it says in verse 5, 00:31:17.54\00:31:18.61 "For if we have been planted together 00:31:18.61\00:31:20.21 in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in" what? 00:31:20.21\00:31:25.11 "The likeness of his resurrection." 00:31:25.11\00:31:27.52 When there's a resurrection, there is good service. 00:31:27.52\00:31:33.66 Without a resurrection, there is no service. 00:31:33.66\00:31:37.66 You must have a resurrection. 00:31:37.66\00:31:39.96 Dying is not enough, resurrection is essential. 00:31:39.96\00:31:46.07 "If he be not raised, then our hope is in vain." 00:31:46.07\00:31:49.77 1 Corinthians, amen? 00:31:49.77\00:31:52.27 Okay. 00:31:52.27\00:31:54.41 With all of that theory, how does it apply to me today? 00:31:54.41\00:31:58.55 You might turn with me to Colossians 3. 00:31:58.55\00:32:03.65 Colossians 3. 00:32:03.65\00:32:06.55 Some of you are making the application in your mind 00:32:06.55\00:32:08.72 but if you don't mind I'm gonna take that liberty 00:32:08.72\00:32:10.69 as a teacher here to make the application myself. 00:32:10.69\00:32:13.90 Colossians 3 and starting with verse 1, 00:32:13.90\00:32:20.84 "If ye then be raised or risen with Christ, 00:32:20.84\00:32:26.57 resurrected with Christ, 00:32:26.57\00:32:28.74 seek those things that are above, 00:32:28.74\00:32:31.68 where Christ sits on the right hand of God. 00:32:31.68\00:32:34.15 Set your affection" where? 00:32:34.15\00:32:37.19 "Not on things that are below or on the earth" Why? 00:32:37.19\00:32:42.09 "For ye are dead." 00:32:42.09\00:32:45.96 And your life is set with Christ in God. 00:32:45.96\00:32:48.46 This is the call to be dead and to be raised or risen 00:32:48.46\00:32:54.40 or resurrected with Christ. 00:32:54.40\00:32:57.51 "If you then be risen with Christ, 00:32:57.51\00:32:58.87 seek those things that are above." 00:32:58.87\00:33:00.64 My friends, in our lives, 00:33:00.64\00:33:06.55 we can try to do a lot of things. 00:33:06.55\00:33:10.65 If you simply try to get rid of the bad out of your life, 00:33:10.65\00:33:16.32 you will never be successful. 00:33:16.32\00:33:20.03 If you simply try to get rid of the bad in your life, 00:33:20.03\00:33:23.00 you will never be successful. 00:33:23.00\00:33:24.03 Let me put it this way. 00:33:24.03\00:33:25.17 If you simply try to mortify 00:33:25.17\00:33:27.54 as it says in King James Version, 00:33:27.54\00:33:28.90 or kill the bad things in your life, 00:33:28.90\00:33:31.87 you will never have success in your Christian experience. 00:33:31.87\00:33:35.24 I'm not going to do it 00:33:35.24\00:33:36.31 because these flowers are pretty. 00:33:36.31\00:33:37.75 But I like to pull them out of vase right now. 00:33:37.75\00:33:40.98 Let me show you something, if I had a tree up here, 00:33:40.98\00:33:43.18 little small tree and it was planted 00:33:43.18\00:33:47.09 in a nice potted plant and you have the tree coming up 00:33:47.09\00:33:50.56 and you have all those branches, 00:33:50.56\00:33:51.63 I say, I wanted to get rid of that tree. 00:33:51.63\00:33:53.90 And if I go to that tree and I simply start 00:33:53.90\00:33:56.33 killing the branches, cutting them off 00:33:56.33\00:33:59.87 and throwing them away. 00:33:59.87\00:34:01.57 Have I killed the tree? 00:34:01.57\00:34:04.21 No, the tree is still going to be alive. 00:34:04.21\00:34:06.51 Even though I have done my very best to kill it, 00:34:06.51\00:34:09.01 there is still going to be a life in it. 00:34:09.01\00:34:11.31 It's just a reality of it. 00:34:11.31\00:34:15.48 The only way to get rid of the tree 00:34:15.48\00:34:18.82 is to get rid of the roots, and then there must be what? 00:34:18.82\00:34:23.49 A new life. 00:34:23.49\00:34:25.13 Got to get rid of the old tree, got to get a new tree. 00:34:25.13\00:34:27.96 Get rid of your old trees 00:34:27.96\00:34:29.86 and then ask God to do something in your life. 00:34:29.86\00:34:32.97 If you simply spend your time mortifying 00:34:32.97\00:34:35.54 and don't allow God to do a resurrection in you, 00:34:35.54\00:34:38.21 you will never have success in your Christian experience. 00:34:38.21\00:34:41.58 For simply trying to mortify the old 00:34:41.58\00:34:45.08 and don't allow the resurrection of the new, 00:34:45.08\00:34:47.62 there will not be true life in you. 00:34:47.62\00:34:52.22 Death without a resurrection is not service. 00:34:52.22\00:34:56.19 There must be a resurrection for there to be a service. 00:34:56.19\00:34:59.03 All right, I've beaten that horse too long. 00:34:59.03\00:35:00.66 Okay. 00:35:00.66\00:35:02.60 Are you ready? 00:35:02.60\00:35:05.60 Romans 6:16, 00:35:05.60\00:35:11.14 these are so intricately connected, 00:35:11.14\00:35:13.78 it says, "Know ye not that to whom ye yield yourselves 00:35:13.78\00:35:16.48 servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey, 00:35:16.48\00:35:18.75 whether of sin unto death, 00:35:18.75\00:35:19.78 or of obedience unto righteousness?" 00:35:19.78\00:35:21.05 Right? 00:35:21.05\00:35:22.32 Very simple, you're one or the other. 00:35:22.32\00:35:24.62 You do not have a choice. 00:35:24.62\00:35:26.12 You're a indentured servant or you're indentured servant, 00:35:26.12\00:35:28.72 where do you want to be? 00:35:28.72\00:35:29.99 You're a slave or you're slave, 00:35:29.99\00:35:31.76 which side you want to be a slave on? 00:35:31.76\00:35:33.50 That's just a reality. 00:35:33.50\00:35:34.73 You're married to one or you're married to the other. 00:35:34.73\00:35:36.53 Sorry. 00:35:36.53\00:35:37.60 Isn't it interesting how Paul connects 00:35:37.60\00:35:38.83 the marriage and slavery? 00:35:38.83\00:35:40.07 Maybe explain some of his other comments. 00:35:40.07\00:35:41.40 Anyhow, lets... I digress. 00:35:41.40\00:35:45.27 But this is where you're stuck. 00:35:45.27\00:35:48.58 You're either married to one or married to the other. 00:35:48.58\00:35:50.51 Slave to one, slave to the other. 00:35:50.51\00:35:51.68 You and I don't have the chance to say, 00:35:51.68\00:35:53.45 I'm free from both. 00:35:53.45\00:35:55.72 There is either one or the other. 00:35:55.72\00:35:57.65 I can't... 00:35:57.65\00:35:58.79 I'll speak for myself, I want to be married to Christ. 00:35:58.79\00:36:02.29 Amen. 00:36:02.29\00:36:03.43 I want to be a slave to Christ. 00:36:03.43\00:36:06.26 I know that comes with obligations, 00:36:06.26\00:36:08.13 sometimes I don't like quite frankly, 00:36:08.13\00:36:10.97 and you know what? 00:36:10.97\00:36:12.23 I trust Him, so I don't care. 00:36:12.23\00:36:14.97 Does it make sense? 00:36:14.97\00:36:17.04 I want Him. 00:36:17.04\00:36:19.27 Romans 7:7 00:36:19.27\00:36:21.18 our next verse says, 00:36:21.18\00:36:28.08 "What shall we say then? 00:36:28.08\00:36:29.55 Is the law sin?" 00:36:29.55\00:36:30.75 And I'm glad he brings this out. 00:36:30.75\00:36:32.12 Paul under inspiration had to realize, I'm comparing, 00:36:32.12\00:36:36.16 I'm using the same phrases for law 00:36:36.16\00:36:37.96 and the first six verses here 00:36:37.96\00:36:39.26 that I used for sin in Romans 6, 00:36:39.26\00:36:41.23 maybe they're going to start thinking that, 00:36:41.23\00:36:42.43 I think, the law was sin and so here's what he says, 00:36:42.43\00:36:45.87 "Is the law sin?" 00:36:45.87\00:36:48.60 And then his answer is what. 00:36:48.60\00:36:50.91 Absolutely not or God forbid, if you have King James Version, 00:36:50.91\00:36:54.08 "No, I had not known sin but by the law, 00:36:54.08\00:36:56.88 for I had not known lust except the law had said, 00:36:56.88\00:36:58.88 thou shall not covet." 00:36:58.88\00:37:01.22 So what law is he talking about here? 00:37:01.22\00:37:04.72 He's talking about the Ten Commandments, 00:37:04.72\00:37:05.82 the moral law without a question at all. 00:37:05.82\00:37:08.32 So the moral law was good. 00:37:08.32\00:37:10.86 I've been talking about the moral law, 00:37:10.86\00:37:12.19 and the moral law is good, then why this complaint? 00:37:12.19\00:37:14.83 What is the relationship and that's the next lesson, 00:37:14.83\00:37:17.20 the next day we're looking at our Sabbath School Study. 00:37:17.20\00:37:19.53 What is the connection between the law and sin? 00:37:19.53\00:37:24.14 What is the connection? 00:37:24.14\00:37:25.24 Because it almost sounds like the law isn't good here. 00:37:25.24\00:37:27.74 Have you sensed that? 00:37:27.74\00:37:31.21 It's not what he's saying 00:37:31.21\00:37:32.91 but you get that feeling sometimes. 00:37:32.91\00:37:35.28 You want to be delivered from it, why? 00:37:35.28\00:37:38.69 What do you want to be delivered from? 00:37:38.69\00:37:40.29 Okay, are you ready for some study? 00:37:40.29\00:37:42.56 I hope so, 'cause I am. 00:37:42.56\00:37:45.03 Let's look at verse 8. 00:37:45.03\00:37:48.03 Romans 7:8 says this, 00:37:48.03\00:37:52.57 "But sin taking occasion 00:37:52.57\00:37:55.64 by the commandment, wrought or produced in me, 00:37:55.64\00:38:00.78 all manner of concupiscence 00:38:00.78\00:38:03.68 or evil desire, 00:38:03.68\00:38:08.85 for without the law, sin was dead." 00:38:08.85\00:38:11.59 Oh, there it is. 00:38:11.59\00:38:13.02 If it wasn't for the law, we wouldn't have sin. 00:38:13.02\00:38:16.39 I guess you knew that already, all right. 00:38:16.39\00:38:19.46 So why do we like the law then? 00:38:19.46\00:38:23.47 Verse 9, "For I was alive without the law once, 00:38:23.47\00:38:27.17 but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died 00:38:27.17\00:38:32.87 and the commandment which I... 00:38:32.87\00:38:34.24 Which was ordained to be alive, I found to be unto death. 00:38:34.24\00:38:38.21 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, 00:38:38.21\00:38:42.62 deceived me, and by it, kill me or slew me." 00:38:42.62\00:38:48.49 It's almost depressing, isn't it? 00:38:48.49\00:38:50.39 I find it depressing I look at it. 00:38:50.39\00:38:52.49 I'll ask you a few questions. 00:38:52.49\00:38:53.60 Who's doing the action here in verses 8 through 11? 00:38:53.60\00:38:55.96 Who or what is doing the action, 00:38:55.96\00:38:58.07 verses 8 through 11? 00:38:58.07\00:39:01.10 Is it the law doing the action or sin doing the action? 00:39:01.10\00:39:03.74 Sin. 00:39:03.74\00:39:04.74 Sin is doing the action. 00:39:04.74\00:39:05.74 Thank you, Ma'am. 00:39:05.74\00:39:08.98 I'm a teacher when I have someone 00:39:08.98\00:39:10.31 who knows all the answers, 00:39:10.31\00:39:11.35 I'll try to pick on the whole class, okay. 00:39:11.35\00:39:15.58 Thank you. 00:39:15.58\00:39:17.35 So it's sin that's doing the action, 00:39:17.35\00:39:19.39 clearly sin is doing the action. 00:39:19.39\00:39:22.29 What action is sin doing? 00:39:22.29\00:39:24.46 Let's look at verse 8, 00:39:24.46\00:39:26.16 "But sin, taking occasion by the commandment..." 00:39:26.16\00:39:29.80 You know what the word taking occasion is? 00:39:29.80\00:39:30.97 So we have another... 00:39:30.97\00:39:32.40 Opportunity. 00:39:32.40\00:39:33.74 Yeah, taking opportunity. Thank you. 00:39:33.74\00:39:35.67 "So sin taking opportunity by the commandment, 00:39:35.67\00:39:39.67 wrought or produced in me, all manner of evil desire." 00:39:39.67\00:39:44.28 So sin is doing a couple of things, 00:39:44.28\00:39:45.71 it's producing something, 00:39:45.71\00:39:49.28 it's producing in me evil desire. 00:39:49.28\00:39:53.66 Verse 9, sin is doing what? 00:39:53.66\00:39:58.79 Reviving. 00:39:58.79\00:39:59.86 Reviving, bringing life, it's becoming alive. 00:39:59.86\00:40:03.80 That's what it's doing. 00:40:03.80\00:40:04.83 Verse 10... 00:40:04.83\00:40:05.90 Verse 11, "For sin, there are several things here, 00:40:05.90\00:40:09.74 it takes occasion 00:40:09.74\00:40:12.37 by the commandment to do" what? 00:40:12.37\00:40:14.84 "To deceive me and to kill me." 00:40:14.84\00:40:18.58 So there's no question that sin's doing it. 00:40:18.58\00:40:23.39 So what's the role of the law in verses 8 through 11? 00:40:23.39\00:40:29.36 If sin's doing the action, 00:40:29.36\00:40:31.16 somehow law is being connected with it. 00:40:31.16\00:40:32.96 What is the role of the law 00:40:32.96\00:40:34.30 in this action that sin is taking? 00:40:34.30\00:40:36.30 Yes. 00:40:39.60\00:40:42.97 Think about it, sin seizes opportunity 00:40:42.97\00:40:45.94 because of the law, 00:40:45.94\00:40:48.01 sin revives because of the law, sin kills because of the law. 00:40:48.01\00:40:54.42 Wow, most people say just get rid of the law and you're okay. 00:40:54.42\00:40:58.32 And that's actually the thought 00:40:58.32\00:40:59.39 of lot of evangelical Christianity today. 00:40:59.39\00:41:01.76 We know that it can't be the answer 00:41:01.76\00:41:04.23 because he just said in verse... 00:41:04.23\00:41:06.13 Did I get there yet? 00:41:06.13\00:41:07.40 No, I haven't. Forget it. 00:41:07.40\00:41:09.13 It's coming up in next verse. 00:41:09.13\00:41:10.20 Verse 12, it says in verse 12, 00:41:10.20\00:41:11.27 "Where the law is holy and just and good." 00:41:11.27\00:41:12.97 So we know it can't be talking about that. 00:41:12.97\00:41:15.44 So we just get rid of the law and everything's okay? 00:41:15.44\00:41:17.67 No, we got to get rid of sin. 00:41:17.67\00:41:19.21 As soon as the law is revealed in one's life, 00:41:24.41\00:41:29.68 sin is also revealed. 00:41:29.68\00:41:32.15 You see that. 00:41:32.15\00:41:33.52 Soon as the law reveals itself or comes into my life, 00:41:33.52\00:41:37.69 sin is also revealed and then I run into a problem, 00:41:37.69\00:41:42.63 I'm told in the same exact book, 00:41:42.63\00:41:44.40 to the same group of people under the same inspired author 00:41:44.40\00:41:46.74 called Paul, that the wages of sin is death. 00:41:46.74\00:41:52.47 I'm also told that all have sinned. 00:41:52.47\00:41:57.48 Wow, so if all have sinned, 00:41:57.48\00:41:59.45 and come short of the glory of God. 00:41:59.45\00:42:01.05 Sorry, working through this in my mind. 00:42:05.49\00:42:08.12 If all have sinned 00:42:08.12\00:42:09.19 and come short of the glory of God 00:42:09.19\00:42:11.03 and the law comes into my life and reveals sin, 00:42:11.03\00:42:15.20 then the law is telling me that I'm worthy of death. 00:42:15.20\00:42:19.63 Do you see that? 00:42:19.63\00:42:21.97 Everyone realizes the law has had a role in their life, 00:42:21.97\00:42:25.84 and everyone realized that it has revealed sin. 00:42:25.84\00:42:28.44 So you all realized by the nature of the law, 00:42:28.44\00:42:33.11 you and I are worthy of death. 00:42:33.11\00:42:34.58 That's what it says. You and I must die. 00:42:34.58\00:42:38.75 That's why I don't like the law. 00:42:38.75\00:42:41.06 Just get rid of it, right? 00:42:41.06\00:42:43.49 So give me the mirror, 00:42:43.49\00:42:45.03 you got a mirror in your bathroom, 00:42:45.03\00:42:46.09 I don't like the way I look, if I break up the mirror 00:42:46.09\00:42:47.66 then I look better, yeah? 00:42:47.66\00:42:50.30 Problem is I don't look better, 00:42:50.30\00:42:51.53 no matter what kind of mirror I've got, right? 00:42:51.53\00:42:53.30 It's just the way I am. 00:42:53.30\00:42:55.70 So when the commandment comes to us, 00:42:55.70\00:42:58.67 we understand what sin is 00:42:58.67\00:43:00.61 and it's then that we are condemned 00:43:00.61\00:43:02.54 and worthy of death. 00:43:02.54\00:43:04.65 Commandment comes to me, I realize, I'm worthy of death. 00:43:04.65\00:43:08.18 I'm condemned and I stand guilty before God. 00:43:08.18\00:43:13.19 The commandment has power 00:43:13.19\00:43:16.16 because it reveals sin to my conscience. 00:43:16.16\00:43:23.00 And there's few things worse than a guilty conscience. 00:43:23.00\00:43:25.43 How's this for all the hope that we have today? 00:43:29.84\00:43:32.97 Can I read something to you? 00:43:32.97\00:43:35.11 The Apostle Paul, this is from fourth volume, 00:43:35.11\00:43:38.18 the Spirit of Prophecy, page 296. 00:43:38.18\00:43:41.62 The Apostle Paul in relating his experience 00:43:41.62\00:43:43.95 presents an important truth 00:43:43.95\00:43:45.92 concerning the work to be wrought in conversion. 00:43:45.92\00:43:48.49 He says, I was alive without the law once, 00:43:48.49\00:43:51.93 he felt no condemnation, but when the commandment came, 00:43:51.93\00:43:55.40 that is when the law of God was urged upon his conscience, 00:43:55.40\00:43:58.57 sin revived and I died, then he saw himself a sinner, 00:43:58.57\00:44:04.91 condemned by the divine law. 00:44:04.91\00:44:08.24 Mark, it was Paul and not the law that died. 00:44:08.24\00:44:14.18 That's a very important statement 00:44:14.18\00:44:15.75 I think here. 00:44:15.75\00:44:16.82 Again from the fourth volume 00:44:16.82\00:44:17.85 of Spirit of Prophecy page, 296, 00:44:17.85\00:44:21.12 or you find SDA Bible commentary 00:44:21.12\00:44:22.72 volume 6, page 1076. 00:44:26.23\00:44:29.06 Simply put, the law is a conveyor of truth, 00:44:29.06\00:44:36.04 and it's the truth that has that effect on us. 00:44:36.04\00:44:39.14 Let me put this way. 00:44:39.14\00:44:42.51 The results that happen when truth is conveyed 00:44:42.51\00:44:45.65 are often blamed on that truth, 00:44:45.65\00:44:50.82 but is it the truth's fault? 00:44:50.82\00:44:54.26 I'll rephrase that. 00:44:54.26\00:44:55.62 The results that happen when the truth is conveyed 00:44:55.62\00:44:59.16 are often blamed on that truth, but is it the truth's fault? 00:44:59.16\00:45:03.57 No, it's not. 00:45:03.57\00:45:05.37 It is the condition of whatever truth 00:45:05.37\00:45:07.37 is acting upon that determines 00:45:07.37\00:45:09.47 whether the truth's revealing is good or bad. 00:45:09.47\00:45:11.74 Another words, let's just say... 00:45:11.74\00:45:16.08 I've had this happen, I was in a... 00:45:18.55\00:45:20.32 I went to an Adventist academy 00:45:20.32\00:45:21.98 and I was hiding out downstairs watching TV. 00:45:21.98\00:45:25.15 Now we had a TV in our, we called it rec room, 00:45:25.15\00:45:27.99 and it was basically so the guys could watch ESPN 00:45:27.99\00:45:30.43 'cause it really what it amounted to. 00:45:30.43\00:45:31.99 And so... 00:45:31.99\00:45:33.06 'Cause the sports was, you know, 00:45:33.06\00:45:34.46 how it is sometimes in the academy? 00:45:34.46\00:45:35.63 And I remember hiding out down there 00:45:35.63\00:45:38.37 and we would, sometimes switch the channel, 00:45:38.37\00:45:43.67 you know, to get ESPN, you have to have cable, 00:45:43.67\00:45:46.17 with cable there's a lot of other channels 00:45:46.17\00:45:49.68 and we would switch to, you know, 00:45:49.68\00:45:51.58 MTV or something like that and we would be watching it, 00:45:51.58\00:45:55.02 but we always had a person 00:45:55.02\00:45:56.18 who was listening by the steps for the sound of the keys, 00:45:56.18\00:46:00.86 jangling from the dean's belt as he walked down the steps 00:46:00.86\00:46:05.69 because you wanted to know if the dean was on his way. 00:46:05.69\00:46:09.83 Now there is also another place downstairs 00:46:09.83\00:46:13.07 that was a room with the ping-pong table. 00:46:13.07\00:46:18.44 So if the MTV was on or HBO or whatever was happening 00:46:18.44\00:46:23.71 and I was in the other room playing ping-pong, 00:46:23.71\00:46:28.42 was I worried when the keys came jangling down the steps? 00:46:28.42\00:46:33.12 No, of course not. 00:46:33.12\00:46:35.96 The law had just arrived, 00:46:35.96\00:46:38.06 but it didn't bothered me an iota 00:46:38.06\00:46:39.86 'cause it wasn't revealing anything in me. 00:46:39.86\00:46:43.73 But, as did happened once, I was down there by myself, 00:46:43.73\00:46:47.67 claiming a sick day, watching the movie 00:46:47.67\00:46:53.44 and I got so caught up, 00:46:53.44\00:46:55.74 I didn't recognize my dean was watching it with me. 00:46:55.74\00:47:00.52 Talk about embarrassment. 00:47:00.52\00:47:03.69 He was a smart man, he realized, 00:47:03.69\00:47:04.92 when it's desperate you just hold your keys together 00:47:04.92\00:47:06.52 and no one hears you anyhow, right? 00:47:06.52\00:47:07.59 Just walk down the steps. 00:47:07.59\00:47:10.56 Was I condemned? Yes. 00:47:10.56\00:47:13.06 Was I under the law? Yes. 00:47:13.06\00:47:15.33 Did I feel guilty? Yes. 00:47:15.33\00:47:18.13 Was I guilty? Yes. 00:47:18.13\00:47:20.00 Because the law was revealed in the dean. 00:47:20.00\00:47:25.81 The revealing of the law is not bad, 00:47:25.81\00:47:29.31 if it's not revealing sin in us. 00:47:29.31\00:47:32.55 Does it make sense? 00:47:32.55\00:47:35.15 But the reality is, 00:47:35.15\00:47:36.18 it has revealed sin in all of us. 00:47:36.18\00:47:37.79 I'd like to... 00:47:41.46\00:47:43.02 Remember this, the parable where the Jesus gives about 00:47:44.69\00:47:46.46 the seed, the sower and the seed 00:47:46.46\00:47:49.26 and they put seed out. 00:47:49.26\00:47:51.67 The seed is the truth of God's word. 00:47:51.67\00:47:54.60 Yes. 00:47:54.60\00:47:55.94 And when it falls into fertile ground, 00:47:55.94\00:47:57.54 it has good results, yes? 00:47:57.54\00:48:00.34 And when it falls into bad ground, 00:48:00.34\00:48:01.84 it has bad results, yes? 00:48:01.84\00:48:03.65 Is it the truth's fault? 00:48:03.65\00:48:05.81 No, what is it? It's the ground's fault. 00:48:05.81\00:48:08.58 It's the nature of the soil that determines it. 00:48:08.58\00:48:13.19 I like to spend a little bit of time 00:48:13.19\00:48:19.13 as we close with the man of Romans 7... 00:48:19.13\00:48:21.86 "For I know that the law is spiritual, 00:48:25.53\00:48:28.40 but I'm carnal, sold under sin. 00:48:28.40\00:48:32.61 "For that which I do I allow not: 00:48:32.61\00:48:34.84 for what I would, that do I not, 00:48:34.84\00:48:37.01 but what I hate, that I do. 00:48:37.01\00:48:40.68 If then I do that which is, I would not. 00:48:40.68\00:48:43.32 I consent unto the law that it is good. 00:48:43.32\00:48:46.49 Now then it is no more I that do it, 00:48:46.49\00:48:48.56 but sin that dwells in me, 00:48:48.56\00:48:50.59 for I know that in me, that is in my flesh, 00:48:50.59\00:48:53.19 dwells no good things for to will is present with me, 00:48:53.19\00:48:58.87 but how to perform that which is good, I find not." 00:48:58.87\00:49:05.11 What a terrible picture, 00:49:05.11\00:49:07.41 desire without the power to acquire is wretchedness. 00:49:07.41\00:49:13.21 Just because you desire good, doesn't mean you are good. 00:49:14.78\00:49:20.96 Desire without the power to acquire is wretchedness. 00:49:20.96\00:49:27.60 I could desire good all day long, 00:49:27.60\00:49:30.90 I want to be good, 00:49:30.90\00:49:32.33 I don't want to have these bad thoughts, 00:49:32.33\00:49:33.94 I don't want to be angry at this person, 00:49:33.94\00:49:35.77 I don't want to be selfish, I want to be a godly man, 00:49:35.77\00:49:40.21 but my desire is not enough. 00:49:40.21\00:49:44.38 Desire is not enough. 00:49:44.38\00:49:47.75 And that is the problem with the Romans 7 man. 00:49:47.75\00:49:51.35 He has desire without power to acquire. 00:49:51.35\00:49:56.02 I think, as I share this talk, 00:49:58.86\00:50:00.96 there's tons of emotion that's involved in it, 00:50:00.96\00:50:03.67 for myself and probably for most of the people 00:50:03.67\00:50:05.57 hear this or study it. 00:50:05.57\00:50:07.97 I don't know how many people I've talked to, 00:50:07.97\00:50:09.34 look at Romans 7 and they say, 00:50:09.34\00:50:12.47 you know, Chuck, Romans 7 describes my experience 00:50:12.47\00:50:15.61 and I believe I must be okay, so therefore, 00:50:15.61\00:50:18.45 it's okay to have a Romans 7 experience. 00:50:18.45\00:50:20.75 And I believe all of us have gone through 00:50:20.75\00:50:21.85 Romans 7 experience at some point in our life. 00:50:21.85\00:50:24.59 Maybe some of you're experiencing, feeling it now. 00:50:24.59\00:50:28.32 But Romans 7 is not the end of the story, friends, 00:50:28.32\00:50:31.56 Romans 7 is simply a stage that people go through 00:50:31.56\00:50:35.66 when they see what the law reveals to them. 00:50:35.66\00:50:40.24 When the law reveals itself in your life, 00:50:40.24\00:50:43.84 then sin is revealed in your life. 00:50:43.84\00:50:46.37 And you realize who you really are. 00:50:46.37\00:50:49.88 Continues on. 00:50:49.88\00:50:52.51 Verse 19, "For the good which I would, I do not. 00:50:54.55\00:50:58.15 For the evil which I would not, that I do." 00:50:58.15\00:51:01.42 I've shared this story with you before, 00:51:01.42\00:51:05.26 but it stands... 00:51:05.26\00:51:08.63 It would be good to share now. 00:51:08.63\00:51:10.93 I remember distinctly, the determination 00:51:10.93\00:51:13.23 in my little five, six-year-old heart, 00:51:13.23\00:51:15.14 as I listened to a sermon one Sabbath morning 00:51:15.14\00:51:17.54 that I was going to never sin again. 00:51:17.54\00:51:20.61 I've determined, I wasn't going to. 00:51:20.61\00:51:22.51 And you all can smile and laugh at that 00:51:22.51\00:51:24.05 because you and I know the desire is not what? 00:51:24.05\00:51:28.92 The power to acquire. 00:51:28.92\00:51:32.25 Desires by itself is kind of... 00:51:32.25\00:51:35.82 We could be humorous when it's a five-year-old boy, 00:51:35.82\00:51:37.76 but it's not humorous when it's a 40-year-old man 00:51:37.76\00:51:39.96 or a 65-year-old lady, am I right? 00:51:39.96\00:51:43.57 It no longer is it funny anymore, 00:51:43.57\00:51:44.97 it's painful and it hurts. 00:51:44.97\00:51:46.57 I remember that decision, I remember falling apart 00:51:51.81\00:51:54.14 within about five minutes, as I got out to the parking lot 00:51:54.14\00:51:56.38 and my sister and I fought nonstop 00:51:56.38\00:51:58.05 when I was a kid. 00:51:58.05\00:52:00.08 Just fighting and all that. 00:52:00.08\00:52:01.82 And I realized then, the desire without the power to acquire 00:52:01.82\00:52:07.06 is what? 00:52:07.06\00:52:08.36 It's wretchedness. 00:52:08.36\00:52:12.29 And when I got older, it became bigger things, 00:52:12.29\00:52:14.56 not fighting with my sister, 00:52:14.56\00:52:15.70 you know what I'm talking about. 00:52:15.70\00:52:17.27 You get into scenarios and maybe you see your... 00:52:17.27\00:52:19.73 Who you really are when you've children, 00:52:19.73\00:52:21.40 I found that for myself. 00:52:21.40\00:52:22.47 I found out, man, I'm not a patient person 00:52:22.47\00:52:24.11 in any way, shape or form. 00:52:24.11\00:52:25.91 I'm hotheaded, I knew that before, 00:52:25.91\00:52:28.81 but you kind of hide it for a while 00:52:28.81\00:52:30.01 when you're single person. 00:52:30.01\00:52:31.61 And then I got married, it rose to the surface 00:52:31.61\00:52:33.21 and I pushed it back down again, 00:52:33.21\00:52:35.78 my good German genes. 00:52:35.78\00:52:37.92 I can do what I want to do. But I tell you what? 00:52:37.92\00:52:41.26 I'm not able to change Chuck Holtry. 00:52:41.26\00:52:45.36 I'm wretched without God. 00:52:45.36\00:52:51.87 Do any of you here have the power 00:52:51.87\00:52:55.07 to acquire righteousness in your self? 00:52:55.07\00:53:00.48 No. 00:53:00.48\00:53:01.61 Are you sure? Yes. 00:53:01.61\00:53:03.95 Is there not anyone here 00:53:03.95\00:53:05.11 has the power to acquire righteousness by yourself? 00:53:05.11\00:53:09.65 No. So you know what that means? 00:53:09.65\00:53:11.49 You without Christ are wretched. 00:53:11.49\00:53:16.29 Oh, wretched man that I am. 00:53:16.29\00:53:19.23 Who shall deliver me from the body of this death? 00:53:19.23\00:53:23.16 But, God has known the desire of our hearts. 00:53:23.16\00:53:30.41 He knows, He plants that desire in our hearts 00:53:30.41\00:53:34.38 and He gives us hope. 00:53:34.38\00:53:37.21 More than that, He gives us power to acquire. 00:53:37.21\00:53:42.28 And who is it found in? 00:53:42.28\00:53:44.25 It's found in Jesus Christ. 00:53:44.25\00:53:46.55 That was the answer. 00:53:46.55\00:53:48.26 Romans 7 answer, I always said was in Romans 8. 00:53:48.26\00:53:51.99 But now, I'd like to tell you, it's also in Romans 7. 00:53:51.99\00:53:56.43 Romans 7:4, 00:53:56.43\00:54:02.70 "Wherefore, my brethren, 00:54:02.70\00:54:04.14 ye also are become dead to the law 00:54:04.14\00:54:06.51 by the body of Christ, 00:54:06.51\00:54:09.04 that you should be married to another, 00:54:09.04\00:54:11.81 even to him that is raised up from the dead, 00:54:11.81\00:54:15.58 that we should bring forth fruit unto God." 00:54:15.58\00:54:21.62 It's awesome. 00:54:21.62\00:54:24.56 It's being married to Christ. 00:54:24.56\00:54:26.76 What does that look like? How does that play out? 00:54:26.76\00:54:29.20 Come back next week. 00:54:29.20\00:54:30.63 But it's being married to Christ 00:54:30.63\00:54:33.64 that gives me the freedom 00:54:33.64\00:54:35.90 from the experience of Romans 7. 00:54:35.90\00:54:39.21 He told us at the beginning of Romans 7, 00:54:39.21\00:54:40.51 then we went through Romans 7 and got all depressed. 00:54:40.51\00:54:42.98 And then at the end, in Romans 8, 00:54:42.98\00:54:44.45 we're going to see this whole picture, 00:54:44.45\00:54:45.98 what it means to live by the spirit 00:54:45.98\00:54:47.65 and not live by the flesh. 00:54:47.65\00:54:49.12 Beautiful picture. 00:54:49.12\00:54:51.32 But we must understand Romans 7. 00:54:51.32\00:54:53.25 Romans 7 is telling us the truth 00:54:53.25\00:54:54.86 that we must understand 00:54:54.86\00:54:56.49 and that is the desire to do good 00:54:56.49\00:54:59.46 without the ability or power 00:54:59.46\00:55:01.73 to acquire righteousness is wretchedness. 00:55:01.73\00:55:05.20 Our only hope is found in Jesus Christ 00:55:05.20\00:55:08.10 and that is the message of Romans 7. 00:55:08.10\00:55:12.27 Remember, we started out with the story 00:55:12.27\00:55:13.74 of indentured servant. 00:55:13.74\00:55:15.71 Yes, we talked about 00:55:15.71\00:55:18.08 how these indentured servants came and almost half 00:55:18.08\00:55:21.25 of the immigrants coming into the US 00:55:21.25\00:55:24.35 before 1750 were indentured servants. 00:55:24.35\00:55:30.69 You know, they couldn't think for themselves, 00:55:30.69\00:55:32.09 did you realize that? 00:55:32.09\00:55:34.10 Can I get married? No. Okay. 00:55:34.10\00:55:38.17 Unless you ran away, then if you ran away, 00:55:38.17\00:55:39.53 you get tracked down and brought back by the law. 00:55:39.53\00:55:42.50 Right? 00:55:42.50\00:55:44.31 Can I go and take a vacation?
