00:09:07.21\00:09:10.38 And I don't know that there is anything much deeper than trying 00:09:10.41\00:09:13.31 to fathom the aspects of the character of the Holy Spirit, 00:09:13.35\00:09:19.02 that sometimes it seems like we're just engaging 00:09:19.05\00:09:22.39 in theological dialogue that doesn't have 00:09:22.42\00:09:26.03 much practical significance. 00:09:26.06\00:09:27.86 Can any of you relate to that? 00:09:27.86\00:09:29.86 I see a few heads nodding, and maybe a few other people looking 00:09:29.90\00:09:33.40 very quizzically at me because this is a 00:09:33.44\00:09:36.74 very practical subject, it is. 00:09:36.77\00:09:38.57 But sometimes, we can get so abstract that we lose 00:09:38.61\00:09:42.14 the power of the message. 00:09:42.18\00:09:44.71 With that in mind, let's look at our memory verse because I think 00:09:44.75\00:09:47.52 the memory verse brings our focus to some of the most 00:09:47.55\00:09:51.32 practical things about the Holy Spirit. 00:09:51.35\00:09:56.12 The memory verse is quoted in the quarterly from the New 00:09:56.16\00:09:59.89 American Standard Bible, which is a very literal translation, 00:09:59.93\00:10:04.27 very good translation, New American Standard version. 00:10:04.30\00:10:07.67 John 14, verse 26, and I welcome you to join with me as we read 00:10:07.70\00:10:12.14 this together if you've got your quarterly. 00:10:12.17\00:10:14.54 Go ahead with me, John 14:26, "But the helper, 00:10:14.58\00:10:19.38 the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name, 00:10:19.41\00:10:24.59 he will teach you all things and bring to your 00:10:24.62\00:10:28.36 remembrance all that I said to you." 00:10:28.39\00:10:33.09 So, this passage in John 14 is actually one of the 00:10:33.13\00:10:36.77 central passages that deal with the identity and 00:10:36.80\00:10:40.47 the work of the Holy Spirit. 00:10:40.50\00:10:42.60 And we don't want to get bogged down so much in the personality 00:10:42.64\00:10:45.61 of the Holy spirit, although that is incredibly important, 00:10:45.64\00:10:48.48 but we want to look a little bit more at why that is significant. 00:10:48.51\00:10:52.35 Why is it of concern to us? 00:10:52.38\00:10:54.88 Those of you that have the quarterly, 00:10:54.92\00:10:57.35 and I'll remind you if you're joining us by way of either live 00:10:57.39\00:11:02.36 stream or recorded message, you can actually download this 00:11:02.39\00:11:06.56 lesson, as Pastor Ross mentioned, 00:11:06.59\00:11:09.20 right on the Amazing Facts website. 00:11:09.23\00:11:11.80 But I'm actually referring to what I think is one of the most 00:11:11.83\00:11:16.27 succinct ways of crystalizing the importance of understanding 00:11:16.30\00:11:19.64 the personality of the Holy Spirit. 00:11:19.67\00:11:21.28 It's actually from Thursday's lesson. 00:11:21.31\00:11:24.61 And it's the second paragraph there in Thursday's lesson. 00:11:24.65\00:11:28.25 It says it in these words, "If we think of the Holy spirit only 00:11:28.28\00:11:33.05 as a mysterious divine power, our thoughts will be, 00:11:33.09\00:11:38.36 'How can I have more of the Holy Spirit?' 00:11:38.39\00:11:42.46 But if we think of the Holy Spirit as a diving person, 00:11:42.50\00:11:46.20 we will ask, 'How can the Holy Spirit have more of me?'" 00:11:46.23\00:11:52.64 Do you see that vast difference there? 00:11:52.67\00:11:54.54 The Holy Spirit is not just a power, 00:11:54.58\00:11:57.08 an essence that we want to hold onto or have so that we can be 00:11:57.11\00:12:01.38 energized in the Christian walk. 00:12:01.42\00:12:03.59 The Holy Spirit is a person who wants to live in us. 00:12:03.62\00:12:08.92 With that in mind, let's go back to this passage in John that the 00:12:08.96\00:12:13.40 memory verse called their attention to. 00:12:13.43\00:12:16.33 Actually, someone has another reading for us, 00:12:16.36\00:12:19.00 we're going to read from John 14:16 to 18. 00:12:19.03\00:12:22.04 Who has that passage for us? 00:12:22.07\00:12:23.94 John 14:16 to 18, and there's a microphone that they're 00:12:23.97\00:12:29.81 getting for our readers. 00:12:29.84\00:12:32.35 But we're going to give a little bit of the context. 00:12:32.38\00:12:34.38 Turn your Bibles to John 14. 00:12:34.42\00:12:37.82 Of course, these are some of the closing days, 00:12:37.85\00:12:41.19 closing hours in fact, of Jesus' life before his crucifixion. 00:12:41.22\00:12:45.13 And in John 14, the chapter begins with those beautiful 00:12:45.16\00:12:48.50 words, "Let not your heart be troubled. 00:12:48.53\00:12:52.43 You believe in God, believe also in me. 00:12:52.47\00:12:56.84 In my Father's house are many mansions. 00:12:56.87\00:12:58.97 If it were not so, I would've told you. 00:12:59.01\00:13:01.31 I go to prepare a place for you." 00:13:01.34\00:13:04.51 So, here Jesus is, he's approaching the cross, 00:13:04.55\00:13:08.68 and he knows his disciples will be shaken in their faith. 00:13:08.72\00:13:12.65 Now, here's the question, just to pause for a minute 00:13:12.69\00:13:14.19 and try to make this relevant. 00:13:14.22\00:13:16.39 Was it just the disciples at the cross who would have to deal 00:13:16.42\00:13:21.23 with challenges to their faith? 00:13:21.26\00:13:23.03 Or do modern day believers, you and I, 00:13:23.06\00:13:26.97 have challenges to our faith too? 00:13:27.00\00:13:30.61 It's a stupid question, of course. 00:13:30.64\00:13:32.44 You know, we all have challenges, 00:13:32.47\00:13:33.88 right, in our Christian walk. 00:13:33.91\00:13:35.78 And so, here Jesus is saying, as the disciples are anticipating 00:13:35.81\00:13:39.95 this great crisis in their faith, 00:13:39.98\00:13:42.25 that their hearts should not be what? 00:13:42.28\00:13:45.22 Troubled, "Let not your heart be troubled." 00:13:45.25\00:13:48.22 And Jesus gives them a number of assurances 00:13:48.26\00:13:51.19 in John 14, 15, and 16. 00:13:51.23\00:13:54.56 And among those assurances is that, 00:13:54.56\00:13:56.97 although he was going away, he was going to do what? 00:13:57.00\00:14:02.20 That's right, he was going to comfort them, 00:14:02.24\00:14:04.34 he was going to prepare a place for them, 00:14:04.37\00:14:06.17 and he was going to come again, all those things. 00:14:06.21\00:14:08.68 And so, central to this message, this encouraging message, 00:14:08.71\00:14:12.85 Jesus gives these words that we find now in verse 16 to 18 of 00:14:12.88\00:14:18.59 John chapter 14, and we have someone to read that for us. 00:14:18.62\00:14:23.89 female: "And I will ask the Father, 00:14:23.93\00:14:25.79 and he will give you another helper. 00:14:25.83\00:14:27.86 So, with you--so he will be with you forever, 00:14:27.93\00:14:31.63 even the Spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive because 00:14:31.67\00:14:35.64 it neither sees him nor knows him. 00:14:35.67\00:14:38.44 But you know him, for he dwells with you and will be with you." 00:14:38.47\00:14:44.38 And 18, "And I will not leave you comfortless. 00:14:44.41\00:14:47.78 I will come to you." 00:14:47.82\00:14:50.32 David: Okay, so part of Jesus' answer to the longing of 00:14:50.35\00:14:54.42 the hearts of the disciples and to the anticipation that he 00:14:54.46\00:14:58.13 had of their coming discouragement was that he 00:14:58.16\00:15:01.83 was going to send another comforter. 00:15:01.86\00:15:05.80 It was very interesting the construct of the Greek. 00:15:05.83\00:15:09.57 And in your lesson on Sunday, it actually draws some insights 00:15:09.60\00:15:15.88 from the Greek wording. 00:15:15.91\00:15:19.25 Now, I do have some seminary Greek behind me, 00:15:19.28\00:15:22.55 but I don't want that to cloud anything because I really don't 00:15:22.58\00:15:27.62 feel I have any mastery of the Greek language. 00:15:27.66\00:15:30.56 And so, I'm there with all of you if you like to refer to the 00:15:30.59\00:15:33.40 Greek, and you look in one of those lexicons, 00:15:33.43\00:15:36.06 one of the--kind of like a dictionary to try to get all the 00:15:36.10\00:15:38.63 nuances, to get all the flavors of a given Greek word. 00:15:38.67\00:15:43.37 Now, in Greek, there are more than--there is more than one 00:15:43.41\00:15:46.98 word for another. 00:15:47.01\00:15:50.88 There is the word "allos" which refers to another, 00:15:50.91\00:15:55.08 usually another of the same kind. 00:15:55.12\00:15:58.19 And then there's the word "heteros," which refers to 00:15:58.22\00:16:01.96 another of a different kind. 00:16:01.99\00:16:05.53 Now, if you're a Greek scholar, you'd perhaps want to say, 00:16:05.56\00:16:08.96 "Well, it's not that simple." 00:16:09.00\00:16:10.37 And I'm not saying it is, but there are these different 00:16:10.40\00:16:12.83 nuances in the Greek. 00:16:12.87\00:16:14.74 And some of you might be scratching your head, 00:16:14.77\00:16:16.07 "Well, how could there be differences in another?" 00:16:16.10\00:16:18.47 Let me give you an illustration. 00:16:18.51\00:16:19.84 This morning, I was at the breakfast table, 00:16:19.87\00:16:22.44 and this did not happen because we weren't eating toast, 00:16:22.48\00:16:25.88 but it could've happened. 00:16:25.91\00:16:27.68 And someone could've said, "Do you want 00:16:27.72\00:16:29.42 another piece of toast?" 00:16:29.45\00:16:31.89 Right? 00:16:31.92\00:16:33.62 That means, do I want another piece like the 00:16:33.66\00:16:35.86 one I've already had? 00:16:35.89\00:16:37.59 That is the word "allos." 00:16:37.63\00:16:39.29 So, it's another of the same type. 00:16:39.33\00:16:42.73 Now, on the other hand, the "heteros" another, that could 00:16:42.76\00:16:46.53 be illustrated by let's say I'm going to pick up a rental car. 00:16:46.57\00:16:51.47 Can some of you relate to this? 00:16:51.51\00:16:53.11 I travel a fair amount, and I'm often picking up rental cars, 00:16:53.14\00:16:55.78 and it depends who I'm renting with and whether you have a 00:16:55.81\00:16:58.15 special relationship with that rental car company. 00:16:58.18\00:17:01.65 But sometimes they'll say, "Okay, 00:17:01.68\00:17:03.59 you can go down to section A in the lot, 00:17:03.62\00:17:06.45 and you can pick any car there." 00:17:06.49\00:17:08.76 Okay, that's all--you know, you paid for that, 00:17:08.79\00:17:10.66 any car in section A. 00:17:10.69\00:17:12.33 So, I go over to section A and let's say there's only one car. 00:17:12.36\00:17:16.56 And maybe there's six of us and it's a Prius, okay? 00:17:16.60\00:17:22.17 Now, I like Priuses. 00:17:22.20\00:17:23.84 But I say, "Six people are not going to fit in that car." 00:17:23.87\00:17:27.68 And so, I walk over to the attendant and I say, 00:17:27.71\00:17:29.91 "Don't you have another car? 00:17:29.94\00:17:31.48 There's six of us. 00:17:31.51\00:17:32.88 All that's out there is a Prius, that white Prius over there." 00:17:32.91\00:17:36.65 Now, would the guy likely say to me, 00:17:36.69\00:17:38.22 "Oh, yes, there is another car over there. 00:17:38.25\00:17:41.76 There's a blue Prius." You think he'd say that? 00:17:41.79\00:17:46.90 "He might," you say. 00:17:46.93\00:17:48.30 Well, but if I said it's too small a car and I ask for 00:17:48.33\00:17:51.13 another one, what am I really asking for? 00:17:51.17\00:17:54.90 Yes, I'm asking--yeah, I'm asking for another of 00:17:54.94\00:17:57.27 a different type. 00:17:57.31\00:17:58.67 And sometime chimed in I'm looking for a Suburban. 00:17:58.71\00:18:01.48 Well, maybe, maybe not. But you understand the point. 00:18:01.51\00:18:04.05 So, you can ask for another car, wanting a different one. 00:18:04.08\00:18:07.95 So, the Greek actually has these nuances. 00:18:07.98\00:18:10.62 And so, when Jesus' words are being--now listen carefully, 00:18:10.65\00:18:14.86 his words are being translated by John. 00:18:14.89\00:18:19.26 Because you may be aware Jesus did not speak in Greek. 00:18:19.29\00:18:22.80 He spoke in Aramaic. 00:18:22.83\00:18:25.83 And Aramaic, like Hebrew, is like English, 00:18:25.87\00:18:28.40 it just has one word for another. 00:18:28.44\00:18:31.04 But John, under the influence of the Holy Spirit, 00:18:31.07\00:18:33.58 as he's translating the intent of Jesus' words as we read them 00:18:33.61\00:18:37.61 here in John 14, which is translated from John's original 00:18:37.65\00:18:43.18 manuscript that was in Greek, this word "allos" is used. 00:18:43.22\00:18:48.02 So, when Jesus is saying he will send another comforter, 00:18:48.06\00:18:52.56 it is the allos, it is another like me. 00:18:52.59\00:18:56.90 So, if we want to understand the Holy Spirit, 00:18:56.93\00:18:59.77 the nature of the Holy Spirit, where can we look to get a 00:18:59.80\00:19:03.04 glimpse of the nature of the Holy Spirit? 00:19:03.07\00:19:06.61 We can look at Jesus himself. 00:19:06.64\00:19:08.98 So, the Holy Spirit is another comforter of the 00:19:09.01\00:19:11.78 same type like Jesus. 00:19:11.81\00:19:14.58 And so, it's already giving us this sense that the Holy Spirit 00:19:14.62\00:19:18.02 is not some ethereal force, but the Holy Spirit is a person, 00:19:18.05\00:19:23.83 is a physical comforter. 00:19:23.86\00:19:25.89 Jesus could say that I'm sending you another comforter. 00:19:25.93\00:19:30.43 Verse 18 in some translations says, 00:19:30.47\00:19:33.87 "I will not leave you orphans. 00:19:33.90\00:19:36.60 I will come to you." 00:19:36.64\00:19:39.84 Now, some might read this and say, 00:19:39.87\00:19:41.71 "Well, this is a reference to the Second Coming." 00:19:41.74\00:19:44.45 But I would suggest to you most literally in the context, 00:19:44.48\00:19:48.58 Jesus is speaking of coming to us in the person 00:19:48.62\00:19:52.19 of the Holy Spirit. 00:19:52.22\00:19:54.62 So, the Holy Spirit, as we read through John 14, 00:19:54.66\00:19:57.93 15, and 16, we get these insights that the Holy Spirit is 00:19:57.96\00:20:01.70 a divine person, it is a--it or he is a member of the Godhead. 00:20:01.73\00:20:07.17 Now, some of you say, "Well, you know, 00:20:07.20\00:20:08.57 you got to be careful whether you refer to the Holy Spirit as 00:20:08.60\00:20:10.57 an it or a he because that, you know, 00:20:10.61\00:20:12.87 carries with it different definitions." 00:20:12.91\00:20:15.18 You say, "In my Bible, it always says the Holy Spirit, he." 00:20:15.21\00:20:19.35 And that's interesting too. 00:20:19.38\00:20:21.18 Look at these very verses we just read in John 16 through 18. 00:20:21.22\00:20:27.59 I'm actually reading from the New King James version, 00:20:27.62\00:20:33.70 and you see this reference in verse 16. 00:20:33.73\00:20:36.36 Jesus said, "I will pray the Father and he will give you 00:20:36.40\00:20:38.80 another helper, that he may abide with you 00:20:38.83\00:20:41.90 forever, the Spirit of truth. 00:20:41.94\00:20:43.84 It neither sees him nor knows him." 00:20:43.87\00:20:45.74 There in those verses, there is actually a neuter 00:20:45.77\00:20:49.61 article being used. 00:20:49.64\00:20:51.51 Now you say, "Wait a minute, what's going on here?" 00:20:51.55\00:20:54.18 So, you know, in English, we have he, she, and it. 00:20:54.22\00:20:59.95 And the article that goes along with that. 00:21:00.06\00:21:04.66 You know, you see, well, it's obvious what gender. 00:21:04.69\00:21:08.33 But in other languages, even nouns have a gender. 00:21:08.36\00:21:16.77 So, you might say, "The book." 00:21:16.81\00:21:19.74 And in German, that may be a neuter or a neutral gender. 00:21:19.77\00:21:26.98 You may say, "The school." 00:21:27.02\00:21:29.28 In German, it may be a feminine gender. 00:21:29.32\00:21:32.75 So, you say, "Well, you know, what's the significance 00:21:32.79\00:21:34.89 of all this?" 00:21:34.92\00:21:36.49 Well, look at these verse for a minute. 00:21:36.52\00:21:38.86 Sometimes when the Holy Spirit is referred to, 00:21:38.89\00:21:41.80 that which is translated he is a neuter or neutral gender. 00:21:41.83\00:21:46.70 But in other places, it's very definitely a masculine gender. 00:21:46.74\00:21:51.77 And why I'm sharing this with you is just because we see he in 00:21:51.81\00:21:56.68 the translation of the New Testament, 00:21:56.71\00:21:58.68 don't try to make that definitive as to whether the 00:21:58.71\00:22:03.49 Holy Spirit is a person or a thing. 00:22:03.52\00:22:05.89 I think the evidence is very clear. 00:22:05.92\00:22:07.39 We're going to look at a number of those evidences this morning, 00:22:07.42\00:22:10.29 and we've been looking at them already in our study. 00:22:10.33\00:22:13.09 But be careful that we don't just try to take the English 00:22:13.13\00:22:16.03 language translation and try to make that the gold standard by 00:22:16.06\00:22:23.34 which we try to judge the language. 00:22:23.37\00:22:25.71 Now, are you starting to feel like I am already? 00:22:25.74\00:22:27.48 You're saying, "This is all very theoretical." 00:22:27.51\00:22:29.84 I mean, how does this become practical for us? 00:22:29.88\00:22:32.85 Let's look at some specific examples that I think make 00:22:32.88\00:22:35.75 it very practical. 00:22:35.78\00:22:37.25 And these, by the way, in the Greek are all using the 00:22:37.29\00:22:39.99 masculine gender for he referring to the Holy Spirit. 00:22:40.02\00:22:43.89 Look with me at John chapter 16, verse 8. 00:22:43.93\00:22:47.46 So, we're focusing in on John. 00:22:47.50\00:22:48.93 And this is, by the way, one of the passages that's highlighted 00:22:48.96\00:22:51.83 throughout the lesson. 00:22:51.87\00:22:53.27 So, we're picking up some of these references to what 00:22:53.30\00:22:56.97 the Holy Spirit's work is. 00:22:57.01\00:22:59.77 John 16, beginning with verse 8, it says, 00:22:59.81\00:23:04.01 "And when he," the Holy Spirit, it's referring to Jesus speaking 00:23:04.05\00:23:08.22 of the Holy Spirit, "when he has come, 00:23:08.25\00:23:10.69 he will convict the world of sin, 00:23:10.72\00:23:13.49 and of righteousness, and of judgment." 00:23:13.52\00:23:17.36 And it's very interesting as you read on in John 16, 00:23:17.39\00:23:22.63 it says, "The conviction of sin will come because they do not 00:23:22.66\00:23:27.04 believe in me of righteousness because I go to my Father and 00:23:27.07\00:23:31.94 you see me no more, and of judgment because the ruler 00:23:31.97\00:23:35.51 of this world is judged." 00:23:35.54\00:23:39.08 Even though we may sometimes think the work of the Holy 00:23:39.11\00:23:42.02 Spirit is a more stern work, I mean, 00:23:42.05\00:23:45.65 most of us don't like to be convicted, do we? 00:23:45.69\00:23:49.32 Well, I mean, we do but we don't, right? 00:23:49.36\00:23:52.46 You don't usually--you usually come to church, 00:23:52.49\00:23:55.13 most people tell me they come to church because 00:23:55.16\00:23:57.13 they want a blessing. 00:23:57.17\00:23:58.67 And you know how I know that? 00:23:58.70\00:24:00.17 Because there's people that come to churches all the time, 00:24:00.20\00:24:03.00 not this one, no one's ever been here and come out after the 00:24:03.04\00:24:05.57 service and told me this, but I've been to other places in the 00:24:05.61\00:24:09.58 country, or I'll meet someone here at Granite Bay, 00:24:09.61\00:24:12.45 and they'll say, "Dr. DeRose, I'm here because the church 00:24:12.48\00:24:15.08 I was going to, I was just not getting blessed there." 00:24:15.12\00:24:18.72 Have you heard that one before? 00:24:18.75\00:24:21.22 So, we come to God usually looking for what? 00:24:21.26\00:24:24.79 Looking for a blessing. 00:24:24.83\00:24:26.49 We don't usually come--no one's ever said to me, 00:24:26.53\00:24:28.96 "Well, I've come to this church because the other church I was 00:24:29.00\00:24:32.17 in, the pastor never convicted us. 00:24:32.20\00:24:34.30 He was never--" 00:24:34.34\00:24:35.70 Well, maybe I have heard things like that. 00:24:35.74\00:24:37.14 But most of us, it's not that we want more conviction, 00:24:37.17\00:24:40.24 even though it's so often what we most need, isn't it? 00:24:40.28\00:24:43.55 And that's the work of the Holy Spirit. 00:24:43.58\00:24:44.88 It is a loving work. 00:24:44.91\00:24:47.58 In fact, if you're not convinced that someone loves you, 00:24:47.62\00:24:51.52 if they try to convict you of something, 00:24:51.55\00:24:53.66 how well do you receive it? 00:24:53.69\00:24:56.73 Not well at all. 00:24:56.76\00:24:58.09 The Holy Spirit is given this name, 00:24:58.13\00:24:59.49 and I know we've looked at it previously. 00:24:59.53\00:25:02.03 In the Greek, it comes from two words, "para kaleo." 00:25:02.06\00:25:05.90 We sometimes call him the paraclete or the parakletos. 00:25:05.93\00:25:10.74 That literally means the one called alongside of. 00:25:10.77\00:25:15.74 So, Jesus is saying, "Just like I walk alongside you, 00:25:15.78\00:25:19.75 my disciples, the Holy Spirit will come to 00:25:19.78\00:25:22.62 walk alongside you." 00:25:22.65\00:25:23.99 We're getting this sense of a personal Holy Spirit 00:25:24.02\00:25:27.76 that has a personality. 00:25:27.79\00:25:29.49 Let's look at a few other examples of this. 00:25:29.52\00:25:31.26 Let's go back to John 15. 00:25:31.29\00:25:35.53 In John 15, we see this other powerful reason why 00:25:35.56\00:25:39.97 the Holy Spirit was given. 00:25:40.00\00:25:42.54 And some of this--some of these are recurring themes 00:25:42.57\00:25:45.84 over these first few weeks. 00:25:45.87\00:25:47.48 But I think it's especially important in the context of John 00:25:47.51\00:25:50.45 14 through 16. 00:25:50.48\00:25:52.21 In John 15, verse 26, it says--again, 00:25:52.25\00:25:55.45 Jesus is the one speaking. 00:25:55.48\00:25:57.29 "But when the helper, when the comforter, 00:25:57.32\00:25:59.39 when the parakletos comes, whom I shall send to you from the 00:25:59.42\00:26:03.53 Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, 00:26:03.56\00:26:07.96 he will testify of me. 00:26:07.96\00:26:10.47 And you will also bear witness because you have been with 00:26:10.50\00:26:13.90 me from the beginning." 00:26:13.94\00:26:16.97 So, the Spirit testifies of me, are you catching the language? 00:26:17.01\00:26:22.61 Convicting, testifying, these human attributes that are 00:26:22.64\00:26:27.28 given to the Holy Spirit. 00:26:27.32\00:26:29.75 And who is the Holy Spirit pointing to? 00:26:29.78\00:26:33.69 Jesus, right? 00:26:33.72\00:26:35.69 So, if we're connecting better with the Holy Spirit, 00:26:35.72\00:26:38.26 we will see Jesus more clearly, we will see Jesus more clearly. 00:26:38.29\00:26:42.83 Let's look at one more example from John. 00:26:42.86\00:26:47.17 Let's look at John 16 again. 00:26:47.20\00:26:50.44 John 16, verse 13 and 14, and that's continuing the thought 00:26:50.47\00:26:56.58 that we saw there in chapter 15. 00:26:56.61\00:26:58.38 John chapter 16, verses 13 and 14, 00:26:58.41\00:27:02.25 "However, when he the Spirit of truth has come, 00:27:02.28\00:27:04.69 he will guide you into all truth, for he will 00:27:04.72\00:27:09.82 not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears 00:27:09.86\00:27:14.00 he will speak and he will tell you things to come. 00:27:14.00\00:27:18.23 He will glorify me, for he will take of what is mine 00:27:18.27\00:27:22.77 and declare it to you." 00:27:22.80\00:27:26.21 So again, very interesting language. 00:27:26.24\00:27:29.71 So, these personal attributes of the Spirit, 00:27:29.74\00:27:31.95 but the Spirit is uplifting Jesus. 00:27:31.98\00:27:34.62 And so, if we're going to be more connected with the Holy 00:27:34.65\00:27:36.95 Spirit, we are going to see Jesus more clearly. 00:27:36.99\00:27:42.02 Well, with that in mind, we want to look at some more of the 00:27:42.06\00:27:44.49 works of the Holy Spirit, just like the Holy Spirit guided Dr. 00:27:44.53\00:27:47.96 Koenig and guided him to people who are going through adversity, 00:27:47.96\00:27:52.30 we want to start looking at some of these examples, 00:27:52.33\00:27:54.84 further examples of the personhood of the Holy Spirit. 00:27:54.87\00:27:57.44 And not just looking at the theological aspect, 00:27:57.47\00:28:01.01 not just realizing he is a real person, 00:28:01.04\00:28:03.58 but also realizing how he works, how he points to Jesus, 00:28:03.61\00:28:06.92 how he ministers to our hearts. 00:28:06.95\00:28:08.65 Someone has for us a passage in Acts chapter 16. 00:28:08.68\00:28:12.42 It's Acts 16, verses 6 and 7. 00:28:12.45\00:28:14.89 And before we go there, I invite you to turn in 00:28:14.92\00:28:17.19 your Bibles to Acts 16. 00:28:17.23\00:28:18.93 Because this is a very inspiring passage. 00:28:18.96\00:28:22.20 It's a passage that's actually set in the context of 00:28:22.23\00:28:28.67 division in the early church. 00:28:28.70\00:28:32.14 Acts chapter 15 is a story of that great divide and how it 00:28:32.17\00:28:36.21 was--how it was actually crossed, 00:28:36.24\00:28:39.05 how it was bridged by the Jerusalem council. 00:28:39.08\00:28:43.89 So, there was this controversy about whether Christians, 00:28:43.92\00:28:47.79 converts, Gentile converts had to be made like Jews physically 00:28:47.82\00:28:52.59 and undergo the rite of circumcision, 00:28:52.63\00:28:54.36 as well as other of the Mosaic laws. 00:28:54.36\00:28:57.10 There was a big controversy. And that was settled in Acts 15. 00:28:57.13\00:29:01.30 As Acts 15 is closing on a note of unity, 00:29:01.34\00:29:05.01 we read another story of division, where Paul is getting 00:29:05.04\00:29:08.88 ready to go on his second missionary journey. 00:29:08.91\00:29:12.08 He talks with Barnabas. 00:29:12.11\00:29:13.75 Barnabas' name means son of encouragement. 00:29:13.78\00:29:17.22 And wants to go on that second what we call missionary journey. 00:29:17.25\00:29:22.82 But they get into some conflict over the gospel writer, 00:29:22.86\00:29:28.40 he would later be a gospel writer, and that's John Mark. 00:29:28.43\00:29:31.63 We sometimes just call him Mark. 00:29:31.67\00:29:33.54 Barnabas wants to give Mark another chance. 00:29:33.57\00:29:35.70 he had bailed out on the evangelistic team of Paul and 00:29:35.74\00:29:38.71 Barnabas during their first missionary journey. 00:29:38.74\00:29:41.88 Barnabas, actually his cousin, wants to give Mark another 00:29:41.91\00:29:45.71 chance, Paul doesn't, and they are divided over it. 00:29:45.75\00:29:50.15 So, that's the background as we come to Acts 16. 00:29:50.19\00:29:55.06 Paul is now traveling with Silas, and he is determined 00:29:55.09\00:29:59.46 to fulfill his God-given call to take 00:29:59.49\00:30:02.46 the gospel to the Gentiles. 00:30:02.50\00:30:04.60 Let's read what happens in Acts chapter 16, 00:30:04.63\00:30:08.20 verse 6 and 7. 00:30:08.24\00:30:10.17 We have someone reading for us. 00:30:10.21\00:30:12.67 male: "And they went through the region of Phrygia and 00:30:12.71\00:30:15.21 Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit 00:30:15.24\00:30:18.48 to speak the Word in Asia. 00:30:18.51\00:30:20.72 And when they had come to Mysia, they attempted to go into 00:30:20.75\00:30:24.35 Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. 00:30:24.39\00:30:28.96 David: Now, interesting, isn't it? 00:30:28.99\00:30:31.26 Do you see these human characteristics of 00:30:31.29\00:30:33.03 the Holy Spirit? 00:30:33.06\00:30:34.86 Forbidding, not allowing, not permitting, 00:30:34.93\00:30:38.63 are you following along with that? 00:30:38.67\00:30:40.40 Now, to me, it's interesting the context, 00:30:40.44\00:30:43.47 and I think this gives me great encouragement. 00:30:43.51\00:30:45.47 And I think it should you as well. 00:30:45.51\00:30:48.08 You say, "Well, Dr. DeRose, how do you know? 00:30:48.11\00:30:49.88 You say you think it gives you great encouragement, 00:30:49.91\00:30:52.31 don't you know whether it encourages you or not?" 00:30:52.35\00:30:55.65 Well, what's going on in this story? 00:30:55.68\00:30:58.22 If you actually study what's happening in Acts 16, 00:30:58.25\00:31:01.56 Paul is sent on a detour of some 600 miles. 00:31:01.59\00:31:08.90 He's been called to preach the gospel to the Gentiles, 00:31:08.93\00:31:11.80 and when he gets to a place where he wants to preach, 00:31:11.83\00:31:14.20 what did it say? 00:31:14.24\00:31:17.34 It said, "The Holy Spirit forbade them." 00:31:17.37\00:31:22.14 Goes to another place, the Holy Spirit will not 00:31:22.18\00:31:24.68 allow them to preach. 00:31:24.71\00:31:26.08 Now, here's a question for you. 00:31:26.11\00:31:28.25 If you think you know what God has called you to do, 00:31:28.28\00:31:32.19 does that necessarily mean God will always bless you to 00:31:32.22\00:31:36.59 do just what you think you need to do to fulfill 00:31:36.62\00:31:40.60 what he's called you to do? 00:31:40.63\00:31:43.53 And I know that was a mouthful, so let me ask it practically. 00:31:43.57\00:31:47.70 Let's say you're called to be a mother in the home. 00:31:47.74\00:31:52.57 Some would make a case that that is the highest calling. 00:31:52.61\00:31:57.51 And I would be hard pressed to disagree with you. 00:31:57.55\00:32:01.52 So, you're called to be a mother in the home, 00:32:01.55\00:32:03.65 and let's say you've got five children all under six, okay? 00:32:03.69\00:32:10.26 And you pray to God for help. I'm sure you do need it. 00:32:10.29\00:32:16.97 But does that mean that God will help you in just the 00:32:17.00\00:32:19.43 way you think you need it? 00:32:19.47\00:32:21.90 Not necessarily. 00:32:21.94\00:32:23.91 And it doesn't mean that God's forgotten you. 00:32:23.94\00:32:26.81 When the Holy Spirit kept closing doors--and we get--as 00:32:26.84\00:32:31.15 you read through Acts, you have this very sense of a personal 00:32:31.18\00:32:34.68 Holy Spirit just guiding the disciples just 00:32:34.72\00:32:38.39 exactly what they should do. 00:32:38.42\00:32:40.46 And I can imagine Paul could've been tempted to sin 00:32:40.49\00:32:44.19 against the Holy Spirit. 00:32:44.23\00:32:45.59 Now, you know, one of the ways you sin against the Holy Spirit 00:32:45.63\00:32:48.00 is you say, "This is not the Holy Spirit convicting me. 00:32:48.03\00:32:50.70 Here, I want to preach the gospel. 00:32:50.73\00:32:52.03 How would the Holy Spirit tell me not to preach the gospel? 00:32:52.07\00:32:55.84 Can you explain that one?" But it was the Holy Spirit. 00:32:55.87\00:33:00.94 And he listened to the Holy Spirit's voice. 00:33:00.98\00:33:02.84 And if you read through Acts 16, you'll see something interesting 00:33:02.88\00:33:06.41 often missed, that in the context of Acts 16 is where Luke 00:33:06.45\00:33:11.99 joins Paul's missionary team. 00:33:12.02\00:33:15.26 The physician Luke joins up with them, 00:33:15.29\00:33:17.59 and it's only because they went on a detour some 600 miles. 00:33:17.63\00:33:23.40 And by the way, that's also why the gospel then was taken into 00:33:23.43\00:33:26.57 Greece from what we would say was modern day 00:33:26.60\00:33:29.87 Turkey or Asia Minor. 00:33:29.90\00:33:31.97 So, here's my point as we're 00:33:32.01\00:33:33.34 looking at the Holy Spirit's work. 00:33:33.38\00:33:34.74 Yes, we want to realize the Holy Spirit's a person, 00:33:34.78\00:33:37.75 but as we look at how the Holy Spirit works, 00:33:37.78\00:33:40.72 the emphasis in the Bible is often not on who the Holy Spirit 00:33:40.75\00:33:44.69 is, but on what he does. 00:33:44.72\00:33:47.39 Do you follow along with that? 00:33:47.42\00:33:49.09 And so, we don't want to lose sight of what 00:33:49.12\00:33:51.66 the Holy Spirit does. 00:33:51.69\00:33:53.93 And he guides us, he personally guides us. 00:33:53.96\00:33:56.30 And when the Holy Spirit sometimes is most powerfully 00:33:56.33\00:33:58.90 guiding us, we're saying, "Where's God? 00:33:58.93\00:34:03.94 Am I hearing right?" 00:34:03.97\00:34:06.64 Don't you think Paul had to ask that question? 00:34:06.68\00:34:09.98 I mean, what's the matter? 00:34:10.01\00:34:11.38 I mean, here every place I'm going, the doors are closing. 00:34:11.41\00:34:13.98 Do you realize how far 600 miles is? 00:34:14.02\00:34:17.65 I mean, how long does it take us today to travel 600 miles? 00:34:17.69\00:34:21.99 Ten, twelve hours. 00:34:22.02\00:34:23.93 How long did it take then? 00:34:23.96\00:34:25.33 What was the day's journey considered in the 00:34:25.36\00:34:26.76 days of the apostles? 00:34:26.80\00:34:30.30 About 20 miles. 00:34:30.33\00:34:33.40 So, this is a detour of 30 days of travel. 00:34:33.44\00:34:39.07 And they didn't travel every day. 00:34:39.11\00:34:40.41 I mean, you read the apostle's practice, 00:34:40.44\00:34:41.88 and on the Sabbath they were meeting with fellow believers 00:34:41.91\00:34:44.81 wherever they were, right? 00:34:44.85\00:34:46.82 So, even if they were traveling 6 days a week, 00:34:46.85\00:34:48.92 I mean, this is weeks. 00:34:48.95\00:34:51.42 Have you been praying for weeks about something? 00:34:51.45\00:34:54.62 Maybe the Holy Spirit's been convicting you, 00:34:54.66\00:34:57.99 and you're wondering why things aren't being answered 00:34:58.03\00:35:01.70 the way you want. 00:35:01.73\00:35:03.47 Maybe you're like Dr. Koenig, you're confused about where 00:35:03.50\00:35:06.87 you're supposed to be. 00:35:06.90\00:35:08.24 And God is trying to lead you in a position where you 00:35:08.27\00:35:12.27 will be the most fulfilled. 00:35:12.31\00:35:14.21 So, it's true of the apostles, it's true of modern day saints, 00:35:14.24\00:35:17.58 and it's true whether you're in the home, 00:35:17.61\00:35:19.55 or whether you're a leading researcher in the medical world. 00:35:19.58\00:35:22.38 The Holy Spirit is wanting to guide you. 00:35:22.42\00:35:29.09 Let's look at some more examples in the book of Acts. 00:35:29.12\00:35:32.06 I told you there were some young adults studying together in my 00:35:32.09\00:35:35.50 home, some of my--couple of my children are home from college. 00:35:35.53\00:35:39.90 One is always home, he hasn't left for college yet. 00:35:39.93\00:35:42.84 Number of their friends were over, 00:35:42.87\00:35:44.51 and we were studying some of these things. 00:35:44.54\00:35:46.34 As we were talking about the personality of the Holy Spirit, 00:35:46.37\00:35:49.44 one of the passages that we looked at in 00:35:49.48\00:35:51.21 last week's lesson came up. 00:35:51.25\00:35:53.21 By the way, it's mentioned again this week. 00:35:53.25\00:35:55.62 And one of those young adults said, 00:35:55.65\00:35:58.15 "Hey, this is just powerful. 00:35:58.19\00:36:00.16 This just clinches it." 00:36:00.19\00:36:01.52 And you say, "Well, we've already looked at it." 00:36:01.56\00:36:04.16 By the way, how many times can you look at a verse before it 00:36:04.19\00:36:08.53 gets just really old and boring? 00:36:08.56\00:36:12.70 Okay, well, some of you are giving what I think is a good 00:36:12.73\00:36:14.80 answer, and that's never. 00:36:14.84\00:36:18.07 We can look at old truth and appreciate it anew, can't we? 00:36:18.11\00:36:22.91 Go with me to Acts 5, and it's really just a powerful passage. 00:36:22.94\00:36:28.62 I know Pastor Doug did a great job highlighting this for us 00:36:28.65\00:36:32.29 last Sabbath when we studied together. 00:36:32.32\00:36:35.29 But since it so resonated with my focus group last night, 00:36:35.32\00:36:39.06 I said, "Well, we can't just gloss over it today." 00:36:39.09\00:36:41.70 Acts chapter 5 is this story of Ananias and Sapphira. 00:36:41.73\00:36:47.47 You remember this story, they sell a piece of property. 00:36:47.50\00:36:50.61 And then, in collusion, they decide they're going to lie to 00:36:50.64\00:36:54.81 the early church and say they sold it for less than they did. 00:36:54.84\00:36:59.58 So, they'll get the credit for laying all the proceeds at the 00:36:59.61\00:37:02.38 feet of the apostles, when really they 00:37:02.42\00:37:04.42 were keeping some behind. 00:37:04.45\00:37:07.82 In Acts 5, after Ananias is caught in this duplicity, 00:37:07.86\00:37:14.36 Peter says to him, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart 00:37:14.40\00:37:19.20 to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back a part of the 00:37:19.23\00:37:24.77 price of the land for yourself? 00:37:24.81\00:37:27.58 While it remained, was it not your own? 00:37:27.61\00:37:30.08 And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? 00:37:30.11\00:37:33.25 Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? 00:37:33.28\00:37:36.32 You have not lied to men, but to God." 00:37:36.35\00:37:41.96 You know, one of the most illuminating ways to understand 00:37:41.99\00:37:46.43 Scripture is look at parallelism in the Bible. 00:37:46.46\00:37:51.13 Psalms has a lot of parallelism, where it may say, 00:37:51.17\00:37:55.64 you know, "Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord. 00:37:55.67\00:37:58.74 Happy is the man who makes the Lord his strength." 00:37:58.77\00:38:01.84 You see similar words, but they give different 00:38:01.88\00:38:04.78 shades of meaning. 00:38:04.81\00:38:06.18 The parallelism in this verse is it first says in 00:38:06.21\00:38:09.72 verse 3 that Ananias lied to who? 00:38:09.75\00:38:12.85 That's right, he lied to the Holy Spirit. 00:38:12.89\00:38:15.26 Who does it say he lied to in verse 4? 00:38:15.29\00:38:19.46 He lied to God. 00:38:19.49\00:38:20.86 And so, although we often use that to connect the Holy Spirit 00:38:20.90\00:38:24.80 to being a member of the Godhead, and that's correct, 00:38:24.83\00:38:27.50 it also is helping to establish his personhood, right? 00:38:27.54\00:38:32.57 So, the Holy Spirit is this divine person who lifts up 00:38:32.61\00:38:36.04 Jesus, who ministers to us, who guides us, who comes beside us, 00:38:36.08\00:38:41.18 someone who is a personal guide and a comforter. 00:38:41.22\00:38:46.79 Well, we're going to look at another Scripture in just a 00:38:46.82\00:38:49.09 moment from the book of Acts. 00:38:49.12\00:38:51.26 But before we do, we're going to look at some of Paul's writings. 00:38:51.29\00:38:55.56 And we're going to be going to Ephesians chapter 4 in just a 00:38:55.60\00:38:58.63 moment, Ephesians 4:30. 00:38:58.67\00:39:02.10 But before we do that, I want to point something out that I find 00:39:02.14\00:39:06.27 actually very interesting. 00:39:06.31\00:39:10.61 Let's look at some of Jesus' words again in 00:39:10.65\00:39:13.11 the Gospel of John. 00:39:13.15\00:39:14.48 I'm going to go to John chapter 4. 00:39:14.52\00:39:17.65 And this is a very provocative verse. 00:39:17.69\00:39:20.62 John chapter 4, Jesus speaking there to the woman at the well. 00:39:20.66\00:39:26.43 And Jesus says something that I find quite interesting in light 00:39:26.46\00:39:29.83 of some who would want to make the Holy Spirit just an essence 00:39:29.86\00:39:33.44 or just the Spirit of God, if you will. 00:39:33.47\00:39:37.67 John 4, verse 24, Jesus says this, 00:39:37.71\00:39:43.58 "God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in 00:39:43.61\00:39:49.85 Spirit and truth." 00:39:49.88\00:39:52.69 Jesus says God is what? Spirit. 00:39:52.72\00:39:55.92 So, some people when they read the Holy Spirit, 00:39:55.96\00:39:58.43 they say, "Well, that's just talking about God's Spirit. 00:39:58.46\00:40:00.60 It's not talking about a specific person or 00:40:00.63\00:40:02.76 a divine being." 00:40:02.80\00:40:05.80 And I'm trying to help us see as we go through this lesson 00:40:05.83\00:40:08.47 together that it's very clear that the attributes of 00:40:08.50\00:40:11.87 personhood, as well as divinity, rested with the Holy Spirit. 00:40:11.91\00:40:17.21 But the problem is with the logic of those who would say, 00:40:17.25\00:40:21.82 "Well, when you read the Spirit, it's just referring to God," 00:40:21.85\00:40:24.22 well, if God is a spirit, why would a Bible 00:40:24.25\00:40:27.89 writer mention the Holy Spirit? 00:40:27.92\00:40:29.76 Why not just say God? Do you see my point? 00:40:29.79\00:40:32.26 If God is a spirit, and the critics that there is a person 00:40:32.29\00:40:38.07 who is the Holy Spirit, why would the Bible writers even 00:40:38.10\00:40:41.37 need to say the Holy Spirit if they're trying to refer to 00:40:41.40\00:40:44.01 God's, quote, spirit as some essence of God when 00:40:44.04\00:40:47.81 God is a spirit? 00:40:47.84\00:40:49.91 Is that making any sense to any of you? 00:40:49.94\00:40:52.51 Well, if it's not, let me reassure you. 00:40:52.55\00:40:55.18 Because as I was reading through some of this lesson, 00:40:55.22\00:40:57.39 some of the things that were compelling evidences of the Holy 00:40:57.42\00:41:00.42 Spirit's personhood to the author were not compelling 00:41:00.46\00:41:02.96 to me at all. 00:41:02.99\00:41:05.19 And so, some of the things I may be sharing with you, 00:41:05.23\00:41:07.03 you might say, "Well, that's just not connecting." 00:41:07.10\00:41:08.56 And that's why we're trying to look at some of these real life 00:41:08.60\00:41:10.47 examples in the life of real people and real disciples 00:41:10.50\00:41:13.84 because our focus--here's the problem. 00:41:13.87\00:41:17.61 And I think we've said it almost every lesson in this quarter, 00:41:17.64\00:41:21.48 no matter who's been up here teaching. 00:41:21.51\00:41:23.75 But the Holy Spirit seems to be shrouded 00:41:23.78\00:41:26.35 in mystery deliberately. 00:41:26.38\00:41:28.78 The Holy Spirit does not call attention to himself. 00:41:28.82\00:41:32.95 The Holy Spirit is pointing to Jesus. 00:41:32.99\00:41:35.36 The Holy Spirit is coming beside us and comforting us. 00:41:35.39\00:41:38.06 And because of the humility of the Holy Spirit, 00:41:38.09\00:41:41.36 we get into trouble trying to argue about sometimes in some 00:41:41.40\00:41:46.00 circles as to whether the Holy Spirit's a person, 00:41:46.03\00:41:48.40 whether he's God. 00:41:48.44\00:41:50.27 And I would tell you, just as we're looking here, 00:41:50.31\00:41:52.41 let's look at another example in Ephesians chapter 4. 00:41:52.44\00:41:55.41 It's not just John, it's not just Luke when 00:41:55.44\00:41:57.88 he's writing the book of Acts. 00:41:57.91\00:41:59.28 We're going to look at Ephesians chapter 4 and verse 30. 00:41:59.31\00:42:02.42 We have someone to read that for us, 00:42:02.45\00:42:04.82 Ephesians chapter 4 and verse 30. 00:42:04.85\00:42:08.19 female: "And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, 00:42:08.22\00:42:11.16 by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption." 00:42:11.19\00:42:15.30 David: So, do not what? Grieve the Holy Spirit. 00:42:15.33\00:42:20.74 Look at Ephesians chapter 4 a little bit more closely. 00:42:20.77\00:42:27.38 A lot of people emphasize the comforting role of the Holy 00:42:27.41\00:42:31.65 Spirit, and that's right. 00:42:31.68\00:42:33.35 But the Holy Spirit is also a person who convicts us, right? 00:42:33.38\00:42:36.85 We saw that in John chapter 16. 00:42:36.89\00:42:39.89 So, here as Paul is writing under the inspiration of the 00:42:39.92\00:42:43.86 Holy Spirit, remember a text we looked at earlier, 00:42:43.89\00:42:46.93 that holy men of God spake as 00:42:46.96\00:42:50.50 they were moved by the Holy Spirit. 00:42:50.53\00:42:52.57 Do you remember that? 00:42:52.60\00:42:54.47 And so, Paul is writing, moved by the Holy Spirit. 00:42:54.50\00:42:58.67 And as he writes in many of his letters, 00:42:58.71\00:43:01.24 like in Ephesians, Paul in Ephesians first says, 00:43:01.28\00:43:05.11 "You've been saved by Jesus. 00:43:05.15\00:43:06.48 We're brought into heavenly places in Jesus." 00:43:06.51\00:43:09.42 But then as he writes, he starts giving moral imperatives, 00:43:09.45\00:43:13.46 calling us as to how to live. 00:43:13.49\00:43:16.49 And in Ephesians 4, one of the things he tells us not to do is 00:43:16.52\00:43:20.80 to not grieve the Holy Spirit. 00:43:20.83\00:43:25.70 Now, does that give us the feel of a person or some 00:43:25.73\00:43:30.34 kind of ethereal essence? 00:43:30.37\00:43:33.34 Yes, these are attributes of personhood. 00:43:33.38\00:43:37.01 And so, the Holy Spirit, this divine being can be grieved. 00:43:37.05\00:43:41.48 What does that mean? 00:43:41.52\00:43:44.55 Yeah, it means I can make the Holy spirit, 00:43:44.59\00:43:47.26 I can make the Godhead sad. 00:43:47.29\00:43:49.96 I can make the Holy Spirit sad, I can make Jesus sad. 00:43:49.99\00:43:53.56 How do we grieve the Holy Spirit? 00:43:53.60\00:43:57.77 We grieve the Holy Spirit by not listening, 00:43:57.80\00:44:00.84 right, when the Holy Spirit prompts us. 00:44:00.87\00:44:05.34 I told you about this interview I had with Dr. Koenig yesterday. 00:44:05.37\00:44:09.11 And he's now a committed believer, 00:44:09.14\00:44:10.85 a committed Christian. 00:44:10.88\00:44:12.98 And he was pointing out how God in his mercy shows 00:44:13.01\00:44:19.65 us the best way to live. 00:44:19.69\00:44:23.02 And we call it his commandments. 00:44:23.06\00:44:27.03 What do many people think when they hear about commandments? 00:44:27.03\00:44:33.10 That's right, they think of bondage and restriction, right? 00:44:33.13\00:44:37.77 "Oh, I don't go to church because there's 00:44:37.81\00:44:39.14 all those dos and don'ts." 00:44:39.17\00:44:41.28 Why does the Holy Spirit convict of us sin? 00:44:41.31\00:44:44.38 Is it to love us, or to make us a little bit more miserable? 00:44:44.41\00:44:49.85 What do you think? It's because he loves us. 00:44:49.88\00:44:54.29 He's trying to keep us out of trouble. 00:44:54.32\00:44:56.89 Now, some of you may not have problems with 00:44:56.93\00:44:59.03 getting into trouble, but I do. 00:44:59.06\00:45:02.30 And I need the Holy Spirit to guide me. 00:45:02.33\00:45:03.93 And I wish I could tell you 100% of the time when the Holy 00:45:03.97\00:45:06.57 Spirit's prompting me, I'm yielding to his voice. 00:45:06.60\00:45:14.91 We want to look at another Scripture from the pen of the 00:45:14.94\00:45:18.95 Apostle Paul, and this time we're going to 1 Corinthians. 00:45:18.98\00:45:24.09 There's a whole section in 1 Corinthians we'll 00:45:24.12\00:45:25.95 be paying more attention to it. 00:45:25.99\00:45:28.36 It's one of the places in the Bible that speaks 00:45:28.39\00:45:30.19 about spiritual gifts. 00:45:30.23\00:45:32.26 We'll look at that in detail later in our series. 00:45:32.29\00:45:37.47 But in 1 Corinthians 12, Paul gives an incredible insight into 00:45:37.50\00:45:41.54 the nature of the Holy Spirit. 00:45:41.57\00:45:42.90 And again, we're doing just what the Bible does. 00:45:42.94\00:45:45.44 We're looking at the personhood of the Holy Spirit, 00:45:45.47\00:45:47.88 but we're trying to say what practical 00:45:47.91\00:45:49.31 things are there for us? 00:45:49.34\00:45:50.78 Because we don't want to just leave having studied the Bible 00:45:50.81\00:45:53.25 saying, "Oh, the Holy Spirit's a person and he's God." 00:45:53.28\00:45:55.65 We want to leave with some encouragement that if I'm going 00:45:55.68\00:45:59.02 through difficult times, if I'm struggling just like Paul was, 00:45:59.05\00:46:02.66 the Holy Spirit may be manifestly guiding me. 00:46:02.69\00:46:05.63 He's just closing doors because I would go to the wrong place, 00:46:05.66\00:46:09.36 the place where my ministry would not be as effective. 00:46:09.40\00:46:12.70 Maybe those prayers for my children aren't being answered 00:46:12.73\00:46:16.34 as I would like them because God has a bigger plan for those 00:46:16.37\00:46:20.08 children than I have envisioned. 00:46:20.11\00:46:22.28 Are you following along? 00:46:22.31\00:46:25.75 1 Corinthians chapter 12, let's get another 00:46:25.78\00:46:27.58 insight into the Holy Spirit. 00:46:27.62\00:46:29.25 1 Corinthians 12, verse 11, someone has that for us. 00:46:29.28\00:46:33.09 male: "To each is given a manifestation of the 00:46:33.12\00:46:34.76 Spirit for the common good. 00:46:34.79\00:46:37.73 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, 00:46:37.76\00:46:41.50 and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same 00:46:41.53\00:46:44.07 Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, 00:46:44.10\00:46:47.67 to another gifts of healing by one Spirit, 00:46:47.70\00:46:50.91 to another the working of miracles, 00:46:50.94\00:46:53.24 to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish 00:46:53.27\00:46:57.68 between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, 00:46:57.71\00:47:01.65 to another the interpretation of tongues. 00:47:01.68\00:47:04.29 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit who 00:47:04.32\00:47:07.56 apportions to each one individually as he wills. 00:47:07.59\00:47:11.93 David: Now, what do you think about that? 00:47:11.96\00:47:13.36 Is that an attribute of personhood or not? 00:47:13.40\00:47:17.37 The Holy Spirit is distributing to each one 00:47:17.40\00:47:20.94 individually as he chooses. 00:47:20.97\00:47:25.04 Now, some of you might be questioning why did the Holy 00:47:25.07\00:47:27.18 Spirit not choose to give you that particular gift 00:47:27.21\00:47:31.05 you wish you had. 00:47:31.08\00:47:32.88 Have you ever wondered that? 00:47:32.91\00:47:35.12 By the way, it is normal to wonder that. 00:47:35.15\00:47:37.79 Do you know if the Holy Spirit gave you every gift you wished 00:47:37.82\00:47:40.72 you had, you would not do what the Lord 00:47:40.76\00:47:43.56 wanted you to do with your life? 00:47:43.59\00:47:45.19 Are you aware of that? Have you ever thought about it? 00:47:45.23\00:47:49.00 When you're looking at these talented musicians at Granite 00:47:49.03\00:47:51.17 Bay, and you're saying, "Oh, I wish I could 00:47:51.20\00:47:52.80 sing like that person. 00:47:52.83\00:47:54.54 I wish I could play the piano like that brother or sister," 00:47:54.57\00:47:58.81 well, you couldn't handle all those talents. 00:47:58.84\00:48:00.24 I couldn't. 00:48:00.28\00:48:02.31 No, really, I mean, it takes work to cultivate those talents 00:48:02.34\00:48:06.08 and to keep--and so, God gives each of us gifts. 00:48:06.11\00:48:09.98 By the way, according to the Bible, 00:48:10.02\00:48:11.92 who is excluded from gifts of the Spirit? 00:48:11.95\00:48:15.29 At least in the church, who is excluded 00:48:15.32\00:48:17.09 from gifts of the Spirit? 00:48:17.13\00:48:19.19 No one. 00:48:19.23\00:48:20.63 So, we all have been given spiritual gifts. 00:48:20.66\00:48:23.37 And the Holy Spirit as a divine person has given you just the 00:48:23.40\00:48:27.90 gifts that you need to fulfill the calling God's given you. 00:48:27.94\00:48:32.11 Now, that's encouraging to me. That's encouraging to me. 00:48:32.14\00:48:37.18 Well, there's other aspects of the Spirit's personhood that 00:48:37.21\00:48:40.25 also tie in with some powerful thoughts for us. 00:48:40.28\00:48:43.45 We're going to be turning in a minute to another 00:48:43.49\00:48:46.15 passage in 1 Corinthians. 00:48:46.19\00:48:48.16 It's in 1 Corinthians chapter 6, we'll be going there 00:48:48.19\00:48:50.76 in just a moment. 00:48:50.79\00:48:52.79 But before we head there, I've been telling you something about 00:48:52.83\00:48:56.36 God's plans for us. 00:48:56.40\00:48:58.37 And I might not be able to give you this full thought, 00:48:58.40\00:49:03.61 but this particular passage resonated in my mind. 00:49:03.64\00:49:08.94 I had been looking at it this week. 00:49:08.98\00:49:12.21 And let me just read it to you here. 00:49:12.25\00:49:14.75 It's from the book "Education." And it relates to our children. 00:49:14.78\00:49:21.49 And particularly it says this, "Education" page 262. 00:49:21.52\00:49:27.83 "God's purpose for the children growing up besides--beside our 00:49:27.86\00:49:34.40 hearths is wider, deeper, higher than our restricted 00:49:34.44\00:49:38.51 vision has comprehended. 00:49:38.54\00:49:40.88 From the humblest lot, those whom he has seen faithful have 00:49:40.91\00:49:44.95 in time past been called to witness for him 00:49:44.98\00:49:48.55 in the world's highest places." 00:49:48.58\00:49:53.32 And as you read through this chapter, 00:49:53.36\00:49:54.89 it's on the life work, it's speaking about how all of us 00:49:54.92\00:49:57.63 have a calling to be involved in giving the gospel to the world. 00:49:57.66\00:50:03.06 And one of the reasons I was looking at is because, 00:50:03.10\00:50:06.37 as I was thinking about John 14 through 16, 00:50:06.40\00:50:10.87 immediately afterward comes Jesus' prayer in John 17. 00:50:10.91\00:50:15.98 You don't have to turn there with me, 00:50:16.01\00:50:17.75 but in John 17, Jesus prays, he says, "Lord, I pray that those 00:50:17.78\00:50:21.62 whom you've given me will be with me where I am." 00:50:21.65\00:50:27.16 Jesus is longing to be personally with us. 00:50:27.19\00:50:31.13 And this chapter in "Education" speaks about 00:50:31.16\00:50:34.83 what sin has cost God. 00:50:34.83\00:50:38.13 Speaks about the pain that sin has brought to heaven. 00:50:38.17\00:50:42.10 And as I was thinking about the role of the Holy Spirit, you 00:50:42.14\00:50:44.64 know, the Holy Spirit is the one who personally comes beside us. 00:50:44.67\00:50:48.18 You know, Jesus can't do that anymore. 00:50:48.21\00:50:52.05 We can't look at the Scriptures. 00:50:52.08\00:50:53.88 There's a number of Bible references that indicate that 00:50:53.92\00:50:56.28 Jesus has taken human form for eternity. 00:50:56.32\00:50:59.09 He can't come beside each one of us. 00:50:59.12\00:51:01.52 And Jesus was longing in John 17 to be with each one of us. 00:51:01.56\00:51:05.53 That's going to happen in heaven, but he can't--he doesn't 00:51:05.56\00:51:09.03 have that privilege now that the Holy Spirit has. 00:51:09.06\00:51:11.50 And I was thinking about that. 00:51:11.53\00:51:13.40 Let's look at this last passage that ties some of this together. 00:51:13.44\00:51:17.51 1 Corinthians chapter 6, verse 19, 00:51:17.54\00:51:20.31 we have someone to read that for us as well, 00:51:20.34\00:51:22.31 1 Corinthians 6, verse 19. 00:51:22.34\00:51:26.18 male: "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of 00:51:26.21\00:51:28.38 the Holy Spirit within you whom you have from God? 00:51:28.42\00:51:31.82 You are not your own, for you were bought with a price, 00:51:31.85\00:51:34.82 so glorify God in your body." 00:51:34.86\00:51:38.36 David: So, our bodies are what? 00:51:38.39\00:51:40.96 Temples of the Holy Spirit. 00:51:40.96\00:51:43.60 Now, what lives in a temple? Kings? 00:51:43.63\00:51:48.04 What lived in the Old Testament sanctuary and in 00:51:48.07\00:51:51.17 the temple of Jesus' day? 00:51:51.21\00:51:53.98 Well, I mean, it was God's intent to live there. 00:51:54.01\00:51:56.18 You could say in Jesus' day the Shekinah glory was 00:51:56.21\00:51:58.65 no longer in the temple. 00:51:58.68\00:52:00.65 But the temple is the abode of the divine, right? 00:52:00.68\00:52:05.15 Even in secular non-Christian religions. 00:52:05.19\00:52:09.72 And so, our bodies become the temple not of 00:52:09.76\00:52:12.96 an essence, but of a person. 00:52:12.99\00:52:17.07 And I can't tell you that I understand how that works, 00:52:17.10\00:52:22.07 but the divine person of the Holy Spirit wants to guide us, 00:52:22.10\00:52:26.91 wants to bless us, wants to use us, 00:52:26.94\00:52:30.31 wants to give us gifts, and wants to dwell in us. 00:52:30.35\00:52:36.72 That Holy Spirit convicts of sin, though, we saw. 00:52:36.75\00:52:40.86 And when I realize my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, 00:52:40.89\00:52:43.86 does it affect the way I live? 00:52:43.89\00:52:46.46 It sure has me. 00:52:46.49\00:52:48.53 And I'll be honest with you, sometimes, 00:52:48.56\00:52:51.57 having not grown up in a particularly healthy 00:52:51.60\00:52:54.77 environment, making healthy choices, some of those 00:52:54.80\00:52:58.41 convictions of the Holy Spirit I did not at first rejoice in. 00:52:58.44\00:53:05.31 But now, I rejoice because God has blessed me. 00:53:05.35\00:53:09.78 Well, I am thankful for the ministry of the Holy Spirit. 00:53:09.82\00:53:13.02 He is a comforter to encourage us, to guide us. 00:53:13.05\00:53:15.62 He is a real person. He is God. 00:53:15.66\00:53:17.99 We'll learn more about his work in our future studies. 00:53:18.03\00:53:21.23 Before we close, we want to remind our viewers 00:53:21.26\00:53:24.10 that we have a special gift. 00:53:24.13\00:53:25.50 It's the "Amazing Facts Book of Bible Answers." 00:53:25.53\00:53:28.97 It can't be read online, but you can order it by calling 00:53:29.00\00:53:32.21 forward to learning more about the encouraging work 00:53:44.62\00:53:47.89 of the divine person of the Holy Spirit. 00:53:47.92\00:53:52.89 Doug Batchelor: Friends, would you win souls if you could? harvest is truly great, 00:54:51.22\00:54:53.29 but the laborers are few. 00:54:53.32\00:54:54.99 So, pray therefore the Lord of the harvest will send 00:54:55.02\00:54:57.13 laborers out into his harvest." 00:54:57.16\00:54:59.46 You can be one of them. 00:54:59.49\00:55:01.10 So, I'd like to encourage you to join us and be praying for the 00:55:01.13\00:55:04.23 upcoming Prophecy Encounter 00:55:16.91\00:55:26.92 [music] 00:55:29.86\00:55:34.00 Doug: Port Royal here in Jamaica was once considered 00:55:34.00\00:55:36.50 the most wicked city in the world. 00:55:36.53\00:55:38.93 They had more bars and brothels per square foot than any other 00:55:38.97\00:55:41.87 place on the planet. 00:55:41.90\00:55:43.24 It was said to be just full of cutthroats and pirates. 00:55:43.27\00:55:46.01 But during this time, the king of France, 00:55:46.04\00:55:48.51 Louis XIV, he began to persecute the Protestants and the 00:55:48.54\00:55:52.15 Huguenots in the kingdom, and many fled. 00:55:52.18\00:55:54.78 That's when Lewis Galdy and his brother Laurent 00:55:54.82\00:55:57.25 came to Port Royal. 00:55:57.29\00:56:01.22 When Lewis Galdy arrived, he was absolutely dumbfounded at 00:56:01.26\00:56:04.09 the unrestrained immorality, violence, 00:56:04.13\00:56:06.49 and extravagance that filled Port Royal. 00:56:06.53\00:56:09.13 That's why nobody was surprised when the judgment 00:56:09.16\00:56:11.70 of God finally happened. 00:56:11.73\00:56:13.47 Just before noon, June 7, 1692, there was a massive earthquake 00:56:13.50\00:56:18.04 that affected the whole island, Port Royal in particular. 00:56:18.07\00:56:21.58 Two-thirds of it slid into the sea, then came a tsunami. 00:56:21.61\00:56:25.31 Thousands perished. 00:56:25.35\00:56:26.72 Unfortunately, even Lewis Galdy was swallowed 00:56:26.75\00:56:29.55 up in the earthquake. 00:56:29.58\00:56:34.49 You know, much of Jamaica is a rock, 00:56:34.52\00:56:36.56 but Port Royal was built on the sand. 00:56:36.59\00:56:38.79 And so, when the earthquake struck, 00:56:38.83\00:56:40.83 the sand virtually liquefied, swallowing much of the city and 00:56:40.86\00:56:43.63 thousands of people. 00:56:43.67\00:56:45.20 Lewis Galdy was buried alive. 00:56:45.23\00:56:47.70 But while underground, he was still conscious, 00:56:47.74\00:56:50.47 and he prayed. 00:56:50.51\00:56:51.97 He resigned himself to his fate, prayed to the Lord, 00:56:52.01\00:56:54.51 and then another miracle happened. 00:56:54.54\00:56:56.58 There was an aftershock with volcanic activity that exploded, 00:56:56.61\00:57:00.48 blowing Lewis Galdy out of the earth hundreds of yards off into 00:57:00.52\00:57:03.95 the sea, where he had a pretty hard landing, 00:57:03.99\00:57:06.76 but he was able to swim until he was rescued. 00:57:06.79\00:57:09.49 Lewis Galdy dedicated the remaining 47 years of his life 00:57:09.52\00:57:12.96 to serving Jesus in this island, and he's even 00:57:12.99\00:57:15.63 buried here still today. 00:57:15.66\00:57:18.87 You know, the Bible tells us just before Jesus comes back, 00:57:21.84\00:57:24.21 conditions in the world will be very much like they 00:57:24.24\00:57:26.61 were in the Sodom and Port Royal. 00:57:26.64\00:57:29.24 There's going to be a tremendous earthquake, 00:57:29.28\00:57:30.91 and even islands will be swallowed up. 00:57:30.95\00:57:33.05 But God's people don't need to be afraid. 00:57:33.08\00:57:34.98 The same way the Lord took care of Lewis Galdy, 00:57:35.02\00:57:37.39 he will take care of you. 00:57:37.42\00:57:38.75 It says in Psalm 91 that you might see 1,000 fall at your 00:57:38.79\00:57:41.96 side, or 10,000 at your right hand, but only with your 00:57:41.99\00:57:45.06 eyes will you see and behold the destruction of the wicked. 00:57:45.09\00:57:47.66 He can protect you and resurrect you. 00:57:47.73\00:57:50.23 [music] 00:57:51.50\00:58:01.28 male announcer: For life-changing
