Now, I read somewhere 00:01:02.41\00:01:08.18 that saccharin is carcinogenic, 00:01:08.21\00:01:09.99 if I get rid of cigarettes what's gonna 00:01:11.69\00:01:14.08 happen if I eat all this saccharin. 00:01:14.11\00:01:15.64 Well, I wouldn't worry too much about it, 00:01:18.55\00:01:22.15 because you won't be chewing gum 00:01:24.12\00:01:25.45 probably all the rest of your life, 00:01:25.48\00:01:27.52 but it's interesting how we look at some 00:01:28.56\00:01:31.81 things in completely different light than 00:01:31.84\00:01:34.86 we look at other things. For instance, 00:01:34.89\00:01:39.06 I remember several years ago, 00:01:41.46\00:01:42.88 it was thanksgiving and we had this scare 00:01:44.08\00:01:49.65 with the cranberries, does anybody remember that, 00:01:49.68\00:01:51.71 the cranberry scare at Thanksgiving. 00:01:52.70\00:01:54.93 Anyhow I always had some cranberries 00:01:56.65\00:01:59.31 with my Thanksgiving dinner. 00:01:59.34\00:02:00.63 So, I went to the store and I asked for 00:02:00.66\00:02:02.68 cranberries. I read the report, 00:02:02.71\00:02:04.97 you know what the report basically showed, 00:02:05.96\00:02:07.17 there had been one study done on rabbits 00:02:07.20\00:02:10.16 and if you translated it into humans basically 00:02:11.30\00:02:13.84 if you ate about 2 pounds of cranberries 00:02:13.87\00:02:16.43 a day for twenty years you might get this 00:02:16.46\00:02:18.87 cancer of your thyroid. Okay, you got it, 00:02:18.90\00:02:22.74 so I went to the store and I said do you have 00:02:24.00\00:02:25.08 any cranberries I figured I could wash them, 00:02:25.11\00:02:27.27 clean them up and have them onetime you 00:02:27.30\00:02:29.28 know, not two pounds, not twenty years just 00:02:29.31\00:02:33.10 for Thanksgiving dinner. And lady looked at me 00:02:33.13\00:02:35.89 as if I was crazy. She says don't you know 00:02:35.92\00:02:38.58 they cause cancer? I said I haven't ever. 00:02:38.61\00:02:44.22 I was a cancer surgeon then you see, I said, 00:02:44.25\00:02:46.12 I haven't seen anybody dying of cranberry 00:02:46.15\00:02:49.07 cancer yet. But I said you're still selling all 00:02:49.10\00:02:54.46 those cigarettes there. And I see people dying 00:02:54.49\00:02:58.13 of those all the time, isn't it interesting. 00:02:58.16\00:03:00.74 You know they have this idea that if anything 00:03:02.09\00:03:04.66 causes cancer, no matter what the doses is, 00:03:04.69\00:03:07.12 you know that saccharin bit probably a 00:03:07.15\00:03:09.46 thousand times a dose than anybody would get 00:03:09.49\00:03:11.69 from chewing gum, so they put that little 00:03:11.72\00:03:14.17 warning on there. But it's interesting that 00:03:14.20\00:03:17.78 they maybe getting, in some countries, 00:03:17.81\00:03:20.25 somebody handed me this tonight it's sort 00:03:20.28\00:03:22.43 of interesting, maybe you saw it in a paper. 00:03:22.46\00:03:23.99 Cigarette soon may carry a death message 00:03:25.17\00:03:27.56 in Sweden, did anybody see that? 00:03:27.59\00:03:29.22 Anyhow they're thinking of putting some little 00:03:30.79\00:03:32.42 stories on each pack of cigarettes, 00:03:32.45\00:03:34.75 how would you feel if you got your cigarettes 00:03:34.78\00:03:36.11 and it said something like this. 00:03:36.14\00:03:37.31 Stephen took his first puff in primary school, 00:03:38.14\00:03:40.79 at 20 he smoked a package a day. 00:03:40.82\00:03:42.36 Twenty years later he felt quite healthy but 00:03:43.33\00:03:45.55 one afternoon he suddenly collapsed 00:03:45.58\00:03:47.15 at work. He died before the day was over, 00:03:47.18\00:03:49.84 the reason, heart attack, he was forty years old. 00:03:49.87\00:03:52.82 How would like to have a different story on 00:03:53.74\00:03:55.36 every pack of cigarettes. That's what they're 00:03:55.39\00:03:57.52 thinking of doing in Sweden, 00:03:57.55\00:04:01.14 so I thought that was kind of interesting; 00:04:01.17\00:04:03.55 I appreciate someone sharing that with me. 00:04:03.58\00:04:07.85 But it's also interesting, you know everyone 00:04:08.74\00:04:10.94 is concerned against air pollution, 00:04:10.97\00:04:13.60 you heard that didn't you? What am I going 00:04:13.63\00:04:16.44 to do about the air in New York, in Michigan? 00:04:16.47\00:04:20.77 Well , I don't know much about New York 00:04:20.80\00:04:23.01 air but I do know something about 00:04:23.04\00:04:24.53 Michigan air. The one pack a day smoker, 00:04:24.56\00:04:30.66 you got this now, one pack a day smoker 00:04:32.36\00:04:33.91 gets six hundred times the particulate 00:04:34.94\00:04:40.23 pollution in his lungs that the nonsmoker 00:04:40.26\00:04:43.47 will get from air that meets Michigan clean 00:04:43.50\00:04:45.66 airs standards. Now, I admit you may not 00:18:36.20\00:18:38.78 want to look like a blimp and all of that. 00:18:38.81\00:18:41.84 But don't use the excuse that this is as 00:18:42.49\00:18:44.53 dangerous as my smoking because 00:18:44.56\00:18:47.90 every statistic tells us that that's not so, okay. 00:18:48.45\00:18:51.99 Now, why do people have a tendency to gain 00:18:53.17\00:18:57.57 weight once they stop smoking? 00:18:57.60\00:18:58.94 Well there's several reasons. You're right, 00:19:01.07\00:19:05.74 hand to mouth he says, well you're used to 00:19:05.77\00:19:09.29 putting a cigarette in your mouth right, 00:19:09.32\00:19:11.07 and getting some pleasure from it. 00:19:12.62\00:19:13.84 You don't have cigarettes anymore so 00:19:15.59\00:19:17.11 what's the next best substitute? Food, 00:19:17.69\00:19:20.13 food, not only that but the food tastes better 00:19:21.68\00:19:26.35 than it ever tasted, because the sense 00:19:26.38\00:19:30.34 of taste along with the sense of smell and several 00:19:30.37\00:19:34.51 other sensations are now returning to the smoker. 00:19:34.54\00:19:37.06 I had one participant say to me one night you 00:19:37.85\00:19:42.48 wouldn't believe it's about this night, 00:19:42.51\00:19:44.41 fourth night something like it. 00:19:44.44\00:19:45.79 He said you wouldn't believe I had asparagus 00:19:45.82\00:19:47.89 last night I thought that was just a green 00:19:47.92\00:19:49.53 vegetable you ate because it was green but 00:19:49.56\00:19:51.83 he said that had the most, most exotic, 00:19:51.86\00:19:54.99 esoteric flavors I'd forgotten that asparagus 00:19:55.02\00:19:58.28 tasted like anything at all, isn't that interesting. 00:19:58.31\00:20:01.06 And now you see, you're used to putting 00:20:02.17\00:20:04.12 something in your mouth, you're used to 00:20:04.15\00:20:05.67 getting pleasure from it and here you have 00:20:05.70\00:20:07.70 all this delicious food. You have a second 00:20:07.73\00:20:10.68 honeymoon with food. I mean really good stuff, 00:20:10.71\00:20:16.09 alright. There is another reason that people 00:20:17.78\00:20:20.22 tend to gain weight when they stop smoking. 00:20:20.25\00:20:22.32 Part of it is that their basal metabolic rate 00:20:23.63\00:20:26.40 tends to slow down. So, that while you're 00:20:27.24\00:20:31.34 sitting around you're actually losing, 00:20:31.37\00:20:33.53 using less calories so that it takes a while 00:20:34.45\00:20:39.72 for that to get back and readjust itself. 00:20:39.75\00:20:42.35 In addition to that it hasn't been well 00:20:44.32\00:20:47.12 studied but I believe it's true, I believe one 00:20:47.15\00:20:50.51 of the big reasons people have a tendency 00:20:50.54\00:20:52.37 to gain weight once they stopped smoking, 00:20:52.40\00:20:54.18 is that their heart is burning many less calories. 00:20:54.91\00:20:58.16 In general when a person stops smoking his 00:20:59.71\00:21:01.49 blood pressure drops about 10 points. 00:21:01.52\00:21:03.75 In addition his heart rate drops about 10 00:21:05.07\00:21:07.40 beats a minute. Now when you consider that 00:21:08.25\00:21:10.59 your heart is a big muscle and it's pumping 00:21:10.62\00:21:13.76 hundreds of gallons of blood everyday 00:21:13.79\00:21:17.03 and now it's slowed down and its smiling dub, 00:21:17.79\00:21:20.75 dub, dub, dub instead of working so hard, it's 00:21:20.78\00:21:24.71 burning less calories, you see what I'm saying. 00:21:25.28\00:21:28.93 And therefore there is a tendency to gain 00:21:29.99\00:21:34.42 a little weight. Exercise 00:28:58.65\00:29:02.70 that is the principle of weight control, 00:29:14.58\00:29:23.53 the main principle of weight control, 00:29:24.12\00:29:26.86 because as I exercise what do I burn off? 00:29:28.28\00:29:31.35 I burn off calories not only that but I kick up 00:29:32.40\00:29:37.10 my basal metabolic rate, not only that 00:29:37.61\00:29:41.59 I build some muscle now that presents 00:29:42.12\00:29:47.17 some what of a problem because I may step 00:29:47.20\00:29:50.62 on the scale and notice that I haven't lost much 00:29:50.65\00:29:55.62 weight but my belt seems to be getting tighter, 00:29:55.65\00:30:00.50 my dress size is dropping because muscle 00:30:00.98\00:30:05.44 is heavier than fat, you understand what 00:30:06.28\00:30:09.94 I'm saying, so it's possible for a person to 00:30:09.97\00:30:12.45 be nice and fit and trim, but not weigh 00:30:12.48\00:30:16.67 like a feather because they're solidly and 00:30:18.28\00:30:21.09 firmly built, they got rid of the flab do you 00:30:21.74\00:30:25.11 know what I'm saying? Some of these 00:30:25.14\00:30:26.71 football players you know they weight 300 pounds 00:30:26.74\00:30:29.02 most of that may well be muscle you see 00:30:29.05\00:30:33.01 and they can be perfectly fit, they're not, 00:30:33.58\00:30:35.57 many of them are not very fat. 00:30:36.28\00:30:38.20 So, this is the principle here. Yeah, you know I mean, 00:36:41.16\00:36:45.68 and they got stabilizers and balancers and 00:36:46.92\00:36:49.98 things to make it stay on the shelf for 00:36:50.01\00:36:51.87 six months without going rancid, 00:36:51.90\00:36:53.71 and it just isn't food, but the problem 00:36:54.95\00:37:00.08 is that as Americans by large we have develop 00:37:00.11\00:37:04.13 taste for junk food. We have developed taste 00:37:04.73\00:37:11.15 for junk food, what is junk food? 00:37:12.24\00:37:14.93 Well junk food basically is refined food and 00:37:15.53\00:37:20.18 the two main ingredients that the manufactures 00:37:20.21\00:37:23.39 like to put in food to make it taste 00:37:23.42\00:37:26.96 good is sugar, salt too. You just stop to think 00:37:34.62\00:37:41.47 about all those things that you think real good 00:37:41.50\00:37:44.04 about and tell me if they not loaded with 00:37:44.07\00:37:45.70 sugar and fat have you heard of ice-cream, 00:37:45.73\00:37:47.41 brownies, fudge bars, dough bars, 00:37:48.88\00:37:54.25 chocolate covered nuts you name it and most 00:37:55.35\00:38:01.18 of these things that we really kind of celebrate 00:38:01.21\00:38:03.98 over are loaded with sugar and fats, 00:38:04.01\00:38:07.99 and we have developed tastes for those foods. 00:38:08.60\00:38:13.24 Now, when I eat all these high sugared, 00:38:14.83\00:38:17.40 lets say we're talking about breakfast cereals 00:38:18.02\00:38:20.29 do you know there are some cereals out 00:38:20.32\00:38:21.68 there in the market that actually have more 00:38:21.71\00:38:23.61 sugar than grain in them. And do you know 00:38:23.64\00:38:27.46 that the food manufacturing industry 00:38:27.98\00:38:30.28 is out to fool you and you know how they 00:38:30.92\00:38:33.86 try to do it with sugars?
