Hey, Karen. 00:00:28.99\00:00:30.33 And are here to bring you 00:00:30.36\00:00:31.79 another episode of Stones of Remembrance. 00:00:31.83\00:00:34.96 The program where we visit and chat with one of your 00:00:35.00\00:00:37.27 favorite authors and look at some of their life experiences 00:00:37.30\00:00:40.84 that have helped to shape them 00:00:40.87\00:00:42.40 and the message that we find in their books. 00:00:42.44\00:00:45.34 So often as we pause through life's deep waters, 00:00:45.37\00:00:47.61 just as Joshua did, we can across some 00:00:47.64\00:00:50.55 unexpected blessings that will determine 00:00:50.58\00:00:53.15 the future direction of our lives. 00:00:53.18\00:00:55.72 But before I introduce you today's guest, 00:00:55.75\00:00:57.75 I'd like to share something with you from God's word. 00:00:57.79\00:01:00.86 It's found in Habakkuk 2:2. 00:01:00.89\00:01:05.26 "Then the Lord answered me and said, 00:01:05.29\00:01:07.50 'Record the vision and make it plain 00:01:07.53\00:01:09.96 that the one who reads it may run.'" 00:01:10.00\00:01:14.00 I'd like to welcome Seth Pierce to our program today. 00:01:14.04\00:01:17.47 Hi, Seth. Hi. 00:01:17.51\00:01:18.84 Thank you for joining us. Thank you for having me. 00:01:18.87\00:01:20.41 We're so glad that you're with us today. 00:01:20.44\00:01:23.35 Seth, you are the head pastor in a church in Washington. 00:01:23.38\00:01:28.78 Correct. 00:01:28.82\00:01:30.15 Tell us a little bit more about yourself. 00:01:30.19\00:01:32.05 Where did you study, what do you have? 00:01:32.09\00:01:34.49 I studied at Union College. 00:01:34.52\00:01:37.03 I did my undergraduate degree there, 00:01:37.06\00:01:38.73 and then I interned pastor for two years 00:01:38.76\00:01:40.90 in Wichita, Kansas, went to seminary, 00:01:40.93\00:01:42.80 did the Master of Divinity up there. 00:01:42.83\00:01:44.70 Came back to under Omaha and pastored 00:01:44.73\00:01:46.43 for three and a half years and then by that time, 00:01:46.47\00:01:49.57 you know, my wife and I had three children and life was-- 00:01:49.60\00:01:53.11 oh, we had two children and life was very full 00:01:53.14\00:01:54.71 and then we received a call to go to Washington 00:01:54.74\00:01:56.68 where we had our third child and now pastoring. 00:01:56.71\00:01:59.15 It's been almost four years out there. 00:01:59.18\00:02:01.32 That, that's awesome. Thank you. 00:02:01.35\00:02:03.39 Um, you are an author. 00:02:03.42\00:02:08.82 Um, Pacific Press has published your books. 00:02:08.86\00:02:11.16 I think you've had a devotional published as well too. 00:02:11.19\00:02:13.09 Yes. How many books? 00:02:13.13\00:02:14.46 About ten? Nine or ten. 00:02:14.50\00:02:15.90 Nine or ten books under your belt. 00:02:15.93\00:02:17.73 Pretty good. It's getting up there. 00:02:17.77\00:02:19.10 It's getting up there. That's pretty good. 00:02:19.13\00:02:21.30 And um, I think probably what you are best known for, Seth, 00:02:21.34\00:02:26.81 is writing for children and for young people. 00:02:26.84\00:02:30.15 That is a special gift, a special calling. 00:02:30.18\00:02:33.25 Yeah, yeah. It's, it's interesting. 00:02:33.28\00:02:36.35 I never started out wanting to write 00:02:36.38\00:02:39.45 specifically for children or youth. 00:02:39.49\00:02:42.56 Just... opportunities sort of showed up. 00:02:42.59\00:02:45.26 I remember being in seminary, in my last semester 00:02:45.29\00:02:47.13 and receiving a call from Pacific Press. 00:02:47.16\00:02:49.23 They had read book which was Review and Herald 00:02:49.26\00:02:51.77 called "Pride and Seek," 00:02:51.80\00:02:53.13 which is where my story book growing up, 00:02:53.17\00:02:55.84 an Adventist preacher's kid and becoming Pentecostal 00:02:55.87\00:02:57.87 and coming back to the Adventist Church. 00:02:57.91\00:02:59.81 And the, one of the editors' children 00:02:59.84\00:03:02.64 liked the book a lot and wanted me to uh, 00:03:02.68\00:03:05.48 write a book on the fundamental beliefs and initially, 00:03:05.51\00:03:09.08 it was a supposed to be 500 words per chapter 00:03:09.12\00:03:12.19 and I had to think about it about six months to write it. 00:03:12.22\00:03:13.86 I thought, great, it's a good opportunity 00:03:13.89\00:03:15.62 and then as time went on, I found out that 00:03:15.66\00:03:17.26 I had only two months to write it 00:03:17.29\00:03:18.63 and the chapters needed to be much longer. 00:03:18.66\00:03:20.40 So they increased the length and shortened the deadline. 00:03:20.43\00:03:23.06 And by God's grace, 00:03:23.10\00:03:24.47 I wrote the book in two and a half months. 00:03:24.50\00:03:26.84 Um, just tried to keep it simple 00:03:26.87\00:03:28.20 and write for an audience as if they had never picked up 00:03:28.24\00:03:31.31 scripture before and that book not only sold well among youth, 00:03:31.34\00:03:36.91 but also young adults, and even adults. 00:03:36.95\00:03:38.65 And since then it has been published 00:03:38.68\00:03:40.22 in other languages and... 00:03:40.25\00:03:41.82 And what was that book? "What We Believe for Teens." 00:03:41.85\00:03:44.22 "What We Believe for Teens." Yes, I know that. 00:03:44.25\00:03:46.45 That went on to become a bestseller. 00:03:46.49\00:03:48.19 Yes. 00:03:48.22\00:03:49.56 I have a friend too, who lives in South Africa, 00:03:49.59\00:03:51.49 and I was chatting with her on the phone one day 00:03:51.53\00:03:53.66 and we were speaking about that book and she said to me, 00:03:53.70\00:03:56.56 "Karen, we use that book 00:03:56.60\00:03:58.93 in our adult Bible study group at church, 00:03:58.97\00:04:02.10 our baptismal class." 00:04:02.14\00:04:03.47 Yeah. And she said it is phenomenal. 00:04:03.51\00:04:05.97 So, you know, as a writer, 00:04:06.01\00:04:08.51 you write what God calls you to write 00:04:08.54\00:04:10.85 and you leave it with Him 00:04:10.88\00:04:12.25 and He just does magnificent things with it. 00:04:12.28\00:04:15.45 Oh, yeah. 00:04:15.48\00:04:16.82 It's fun to watch and to hear the stories 00:04:16.85\00:04:18.19 or letters or emails that come in 00:04:18.22\00:04:20.12 'cause you have no idea when you're writing. 00:04:20.16\00:04:21.49 You kind of get in the middle of a project, 00:04:21.52\00:04:22.86 you think is this, does this even make any sense? 00:04:22.89\00:04:24.59 They won't even like this at all. 00:04:24.63\00:04:25.96 Maybe my mom will buy a copy, maybe that's about it. 00:04:25.99\00:04:28.33 And then you start receiving feedback this way, 00:04:28.36\00:04:31.00 positive or read this at my baptismal class or you know, 00:04:31.03\00:04:34.04 I read this book, you know, every year. 00:04:34.07\00:04:36.44 One of the coolest compliments I get is from parents who say, 00:04:36.47\00:04:38.84 "My kid has slept with that book 00:04:38.87\00:04:40.98 and the pages are dog eared and we almost need 00:04:41.01\00:04:43.21 to buy another copy because it's so roughly. 00:04:43.24\00:04:44.58 They keep re-reading it, that's pretty amazing to hear. 00:04:44.61\00:04:46.98 As you are working though the major script for this book, 00:04:47.02\00:04:50.69 what were some things in your mind about 00:04:50.72\00:04:52.92 how young people struggle with articulating their faith 00:04:52.95\00:04:57.03 that you were able to bring out in 00:04:57.06\00:04:58.39 "What We Believe for Teens?" 00:04:58.43\00:04:59.76 I think, not shying away from the hard questions. 00:04:59.79\00:05:04.20 You know, you don't want to get, 00:05:04.23\00:05:05.57 you don't want to get sidetracked but I think 00:05:05.60\00:05:07.54 trying to get the big picture, I think that's, 00:05:07.57\00:05:09.40 that's the biggest thing. 00:05:09.44\00:05:10.77 I think Adventists are prolific producers of text. 00:05:10.81\00:05:15.01 You know, we buy an awful lot material 00:05:15.04\00:05:17.05 and can we write intellectual 00:05:17.08\00:05:18.98 cerebral with a lot of stuff and it's easy to drown in that. 00:05:19.01\00:05:22.68 You know, and sometimes, you know, as a cliche, it goes, 00:05:22.72\00:05:25.72 "You can't see the forest for the trees." 00:05:25.75\00:05:28.16 And so really reminding myself as I want to do that project. 00:05:28.19\00:05:31.13 It's a big picture, big picture. 00:05:31.16\00:05:32.49 Lots of stories, you know, and connecting it to 00:05:32.53\00:05:34.56 everyday life and um, and again, 00:05:34.60\00:05:36.77 it's been an amazing thing to watch. 00:05:36.80\00:05:38.70 Not only kids connect with it, but to hear about adults 00:05:38.73\00:05:41.20 are reading it, um, yeah, it's been, 00:05:41.24\00:05:44.44 it's been an interesting journey to watch 00:05:44.47\00:05:46.27 the life of the book and how it's impacted people. 00:05:46.31\00:05:48.84 'Cause the truth is, no matter how we get there, 00:05:48.88\00:05:50.95 there's still a part of us that longs to be a kid 00:05:50.98\00:05:53.55 and see things through a kid's eyes. 00:05:53.58\00:05:55.65 Yeah, that's great. 00:05:55.68\00:05:57.55 Seth, you also wrote the Peter Paul Pappenfuss series, 00:05:57.59\00:06:02.29 which was a real character of a kid. 00:06:02.32\00:06:05.19 So I have to ask you this question, 00:06:05.23\00:06:07.83 what were you like at that age? 00:06:07.86\00:06:10.07 Yeah, that's the biggest question I get from those books 00:06:10.10\00:06:11.60 'cause it's not about you, you know, 00:06:11.63\00:06:14.67 I had people who knew me as a kid. 00:06:14.70\00:06:17.04 I think this character is this person, is it that person? 00:06:17.07\00:06:19.34 And I have to tell them, "Oh, it's sort of based on 00:06:19.37\00:06:21.21 a compilation of several real people and real instances 00:06:21.24\00:06:24.51 that's woven into a fictional narrative but rings true, 00:06:24.55\00:06:28.05 you know, with life and it's, you know, 00:06:28.08\00:06:29.62 it features of preacher's kid in fifth grade, 00:06:29.65\00:06:30.99 it's sort of a first person narrative. 00:06:31.02\00:06:32.42 And one of the books that influenced the tone of the book 00:06:32.45\00:06:36.79 when I was growing up 00:06:36.83\00:06:38.29 and developing a passion for reading. 00:06:38.33\00:06:39.66 I love Judy Blume's books, 00:06:39.69\00:06:41.43 'Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing', 00:06:41.46\00:06:42.96 you know, things like that which-- 00:06:43.00\00:06:44.33 it's a first person perspective of a fourth grade boy 00:06:44.37\00:06:47.57 who has a little brother and that was me 00:06:47.60\00:06:48.97 and so I really identified with the, 00:06:49.00\00:06:50.81 just the silly antics that happened with, 00:06:50.84\00:06:53.11 when you were a kid and... 00:06:53.14\00:06:54.48 The real-life stuff. 00:06:54.51\00:06:55.84 Yeah, the real-life stuff, and so um, 00:06:55.88\00:06:57.28 when I was working on those books and conceptualizing them, 00:06:57.31\00:07:00.55 I noticed that in the Adventist publishing world 00:07:00.58\00:07:03.92 there wasn't a lot of books for young boys, 00:07:03.95\00:07:05.99 lot of Adventist girl stories and horror stories but nothing, 00:07:06.02\00:07:09.42 you know, that boy 10 to 12 or 13 can really connect with, 00:07:09.46\00:07:14.16 and so I thought I would try this 00:07:14.20\00:07:16.06 and because I grew as a preacher's kid 00:07:16.10\00:07:17.43 and knew some of the struggles and challenges, 00:07:17.47\00:07:21.04 or try to make it as real as possible 00:07:21.07\00:07:22.47 and keep the humor, you know, in there. 00:07:22.50\00:07:25.74 And the response was pretty amazing and diverse too. 00:07:25.77\00:07:30.35 Kids really liked it. 00:07:30.38\00:07:31.71 There were some concerned adults about it. 00:07:31.75\00:07:34.48 You know, they thought maybe this character 00:07:34.52\00:07:35.85 is a little too rough around the edges 00:07:35.88\00:07:37.22 and one of the guiding philosophies 00:07:37.25\00:07:39.25 while I was working on the book, 00:07:39.29\00:07:40.62 if you look at Ellen White growing up, 00:07:40.66\00:07:43.36 and the books that she read in the Methodist church library, 00:07:43.39\00:07:46.33 they feature these flawless children, 00:07:46.36\00:07:48.03 and one of the things that led to her spiritual depression 00:07:48.06\00:07:50.10 as a kid is reading these stories that I can, 00:07:50.13\00:07:51.97 I can never be like these kids and it was an incredible source 00:07:52.00\00:07:55.57 of discouragement for her. 00:07:55.60\00:07:56.94 And so, I wanted to keep the kids real 00:07:56.97\00:07:59.31 and tell it a bit slower, character arc, where they, 00:07:59.34\00:08:03.18 you know, they are better by the end of the book 00:08:03.21\00:08:04.91 but they are not perfect yet, 00:08:04.95\00:08:06.28 they are still rustling with the issues of life 00:08:06.31\00:08:07.65 and it's been amazing to have pastoral families. 00:08:07.68\00:08:12.05 So, I thank you so much making our, 00:08:12.09\00:08:14.06 the pastoral family look normal 00:08:14.09\00:08:15.52 and really sharing the struggles, you know, 00:08:15.56\00:08:17.33 we have and it means a lot to our kids and stuff, 00:08:17.36\00:08:19.43 that's been pretty cool to see. 00:08:19.46\00:08:20.96 That is awesome, that is awesome. 00:08:21.00\00:08:23.13 Thank you, Seth. 00:08:23.16\00:08:24.60 Um, a lot of our viewers are parents and grandparents 00:08:24.63\00:08:29.87 and I think one of the things I appreciate in your books 00:08:29.90\00:08:35.44 is your underlying passion that comes through 00:08:35.48\00:08:37.65 for helping kids to connect them with Jesus. 00:08:37.68\00:08:40.38 Um, 00:08:40.42\00:08:42.38 where did you first encounter Jesus in your own life? 00:08:42.42\00:08:47.29 I think it's a series of encounters. 00:08:47.32\00:08:50.16 Um, obviously growing up as a pastor's kid, 00:08:50.19\00:08:51.86 you are exposed, you know, 00:08:51.89\00:08:53.23 to a lot of opportunities to connect with Jesus. 00:08:53.26\00:08:55.26 I was baptized when I was 11 00:08:55.30\00:08:56.97 and I had a tremendous experience, 00:08:57.00\00:09:00.54 a good experience growing up as a preacher's kid. 00:09:00.57\00:09:02.17 Sometimes, there's horror stories, 00:09:02.20\00:09:04.11 you have a terrible experience, I never did. 00:09:04.14\00:09:06.27 Uh, but you know, my family wasn't perfect 00:09:06.31\00:09:08.24 and my parents got a divorce when I was eight. 00:09:08.28\00:09:10.81 You know, dad left the ministry and there was sort of 00:09:10.85\00:09:13.05 a extended period of spiritual searching 00:09:13.08\00:09:15.45 and trying to figure out who I was, 00:09:15.48\00:09:18.92 do I want to be a Christian and at the same time, you know, 00:09:18.95\00:09:21.79 there was this incredible arrogance. 00:09:21.82\00:09:23.46 You know, I'm a preacher's kid, I'm a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:09:23.49\00:09:24.96 I know everything. 00:09:24.99\00:09:26.33 I don't need to go to church, you know, and uh... 00:09:26.36\00:09:28.43 I've got the inside track. I've got the inside track. 00:09:28.46\00:09:30.30 I grew up here. You know, I've got it. 00:09:30.33\00:09:31.67 You know, I was born into it, you know, that kind of thing. 00:09:31.70\00:09:34.50 And when I was in High School, I dated a girl whose condition 00:09:34.54\00:09:38.37 was you need to come to church with me on Sunday, 00:09:38.41\00:09:40.58 you know, otherwise you can't date me. 00:09:40.61\00:09:42.08 I figured that's a small price to pay, 00:09:42.11\00:09:43.45 so I showed up on Sunday 00:09:43.48\00:09:45.51 and it was a large, charismatic, mega church 00:09:45.55\00:09:47.85 and I remember I was judging those people, you know. 00:09:47.88\00:09:49.78 I mean as soon as I saw somebody, you know, 00:09:49.82\00:09:51.99 raising their hands and singing out loud, 00:09:52.02\00:09:53.96 I thought these people are going to hell. 00:09:53.99\00:09:55.52 There's no way you can be this happy and demonstrative, 00:09:55.56\00:09:57.79 you know, and be a Christian. 00:09:57.83\00:10:00.16 You know, I grew up in Northern Minnesota, 00:10:00.20\00:10:02.50 you know, we just don't do that, 00:10:02.53\00:10:05.43 you know, we are not that demonstrative. 00:10:05.47\00:10:08.40 And you know, through, you know, 00:10:08.44\00:10:10.21 making a long story short, God really broke through 00:10:10.24\00:10:12.94 a lot of my spiritual pride and I had 00:10:12.97\00:10:14.88 a conversion experience in the Pentecostal Church, 00:10:14.91\00:10:18.35 you know, and it was, it was very real 00:10:18.38\00:10:22.32 and it very much life changing. 00:10:22.35\00:10:24.85 I had some things in my life that need to get cleaned up 00:10:24.89\00:10:26.79 and it just was a complete 180 for me. 00:10:26.82\00:10:30.59 And as I, you know, grew in that setting 00:10:30.63\00:10:32.53 and returned into scripture and studied and prayed 00:10:32.56\00:10:34.83 and got involved in another 00:10:34.86\00:10:36.20 Adventist Church at the same time. 00:10:36.23\00:10:37.57 I eventually was reconvicted on the Adventist message 00:10:37.60\00:10:40.87 and made a decision to go to 00:10:40.90\00:10:43.20 Union College and study for ministry. 00:10:43.24\00:10:45.47 Well, that's awesome. 00:10:45.51\00:10:47.84 Now I know that you are a sought after speaker, um, 00:10:47.88\00:10:52.05 across the country and internationally as well. 00:10:52.08\00:10:54.68 What do you hear from parents or from kids when you travel? 00:10:54.72\00:10:59.45 What kind of feedback do they give you on your books? 00:10:59.49\00:11:02.22 Um, they like, they like the humor, 00:11:02.26\00:11:05.59 they like the stories. 00:11:05.63\00:11:07.66 Um, you know, one thing, I think it's important. 00:11:07.70\00:11:09.83 You know, we have this incredible theology 00:11:09.86\00:11:13.47 and its incredible message 00:11:13.50\00:11:14.84 and there's so many facets to it 00:11:14.87\00:11:16.34 and sometimes if we are not careful, 00:11:16.37\00:11:17.71 we kind of dump it on people and again, 00:11:17.74\00:11:19.84 you can get, you can drown in it, 00:11:19.87\00:11:21.44 you know, because there's so much 00:11:21.48\00:11:22.81 and so I think by connecting our stories and metaphors 00:11:22.84\00:11:26.11 and humorous events that are true to life, 00:11:26.15\00:11:30.19 it just helps them connect with the message 00:11:30.22\00:11:32.62 and they also like the realness of it. 00:11:32.65\00:11:36.73 You know, you are not skirting around the hard questions 00:11:36.76\00:11:40.60 even being willing to admit that I don't know. 00:11:40.63\00:11:42.23 Is there some questions I have that I don't know, 00:11:42.26\00:11:43.87 you know, and that's okay, you know. 00:11:43.90\00:11:47.34 And yeah, and so I think just the realness of it 00:11:47.37\00:11:50.67 and I think my willingness to share a lot of my 00:11:50.71\00:11:52.17 personal stories and struggles, within the books that I write. 00:11:52.21\00:11:56.91 You know, I don't write of a place of now 00:11:56.95\00:11:58.91 I've got this all figured out and you know, 00:11:58.95\00:12:00.62 and let me just tell you know everything. 00:12:00.65\00:12:02.35 It's, you know, we're on this string together 00:12:02.38\00:12:03.99 and there's things that I'm wrestling within, so are you. 00:12:04.02\00:12:06.25 And you can, and you can resonate sometimes 00:12:06.29\00:12:08.39 with the assumption that we have as Adventist 00:12:08.42\00:12:11.59 sometimes that you are born into the church, 00:12:11.63\00:12:15.86 you should know. 00:12:15.90\00:12:17.63 You should know Daniel, 00:12:17.67\00:12:19.00 you should understand a Revelation, 00:12:19.03\00:12:20.80 you should understand a sanctuary. 00:12:20.84\00:12:22.50 Yeah, and that was something when I was studying, 00:12:22.54\00:12:24.77 I remember pitching this idea to you at 00:12:24.81\00:12:26.17 General Conference session, I think it was the last 00:12:26.21\00:12:28.71 General Conference session thing where has anyone 00:12:28.74\00:12:30.18 ever a tackled a prophecy series for teens 00:12:30.21\00:12:32.85 and I didn't really, really, we were chatting about those 00:12:32.88\00:12:34.48 two a little while ago. 00:12:34.52\00:12:36.05 I don't really think through without, 00:12:36.08\00:12:37.42 the work that would entail doing that, and um, you know, 00:12:37.45\00:12:40.76 that may not be a great idea for somebody else to do 00:12:40.79\00:12:43.96 and that was the project unfolded, you know, 00:12:43.99\00:12:46.13 started doing a lot of reading and studying, you know, 00:12:46.16\00:12:49.30 re-reading, you know, materials I got in seminary, 00:12:49.33\00:12:51.37 re-reading, you know, scripture and really looking 00:12:51.40\00:12:53.67 at the prophesies and there's the huge breadth of knowledge 00:12:53.70\00:12:58.11 and materials that we have as Adventists 00:12:58.14\00:13:00.31 and one of the things that I found, 00:13:00.34\00:13:02.71 in addition to an incredible amount of truth, 00:13:02.74\00:13:05.08 was we assumed that people know what we are talking about. 00:13:05.11\00:13:08.12 We do an awful lot. 00:13:08.15\00:13:09.48 We just sort of assume that everyone kind of knows 00:13:09.52\00:13:10.85 this and they don't. 00:13:10.89\00:13:12.22 And I found several places where the content was good 00:13:12.25\00:13:15.09 in the material I was reading but they would make jumps, 00:13:15.12\00:13:16.89 just kind of assuming that the reader would follow. 00:13:16.93\00:13:19.73 And so part of the task was to step backwards and say, 00:13:19.76\00:13:22.46 I want to start this thing from scratch as if this person 00:13:22.50\00:13:24.67 has never cracked open scripture, you know, 00:13:24.70\00:13:27.07 and we are going to start from the very beginning. 00:13:27.10\00:13:28.44 Right. And I just to want to say to our viewers, 00:13:28.47\00:13:31.47 if you've read any of Seth's books, 00:13:31.51\00:13:33.17 you'll know that he has a gift for taking very difficult 00:13:33.21\00:13:36.44 ideas and concepts and presenting them in a way 00:13:36.48\00:13:39.71 that makes them so easy to understand, 00:13:39.75\00:13:42.25 which is really perfect when it comes to writing 00:13:42.28\00:13:44.69 about prophecy, right? 00:13:44.72\00:13:46.79 Um, because they are not easy always... 00:13:46.82\00:13:49.06 No, they are not. ...to understand. 00:13:49.09\00:13:50.56 The experience... especially, for the Revelation book, 00:13:50.59\00:13:52.96 it felt like somebody handing me a giant ball 00:13:52.99\00:13:54.33 of tangled Christmas lights and having to go through 00:13:54.36\00:13:57.83 and just unravel, you know, all 'cause they were so many 00:13:57.87\00:14:00.47 views and so many different, imagery, you know, 00:14:00.50\00:14:02.90 images that people use and so... 00:14:02.94\00:14:04.37 And approaches. 00:14:04.41\00:14:05.74 Yeah, different approaches, different hermeneutics, 00:14:05.77\00:14:08.11 different traditions and so it was a, you know, 00:14:08.14\00:14:10.98 trying to tend to distill it down 00:14:11.01\00:14:12.51 and say this is the central, you know, 00:14:12.55\00:14:15.88 the way that Adventist view prophecy, you know, 00:14:15.92\00:14:18.65 and allowing for few areas, you know, 00:14:18.69\00:14:21.42 like when you get to Daniel 11, for example, saying, 00:14:21.46\00:14:23.26 there's a few ways that people approach this 00:14:23.29\00:14:25.26 within the Adventist Church, you know, and here they are. 00:14:25.29\00:14:27.53 You know, and really try not to um, 00:14:27.56\00:14:30.50 be dogmatic about it but just say, look, here's a, 00:14:30.53\00:14:33.07 this book is a stepping stone for deeper study 00:14:33.10\00:14:35.10 and here's the big picture, the macro, you know, picture. 00:14:35.14\00:14:38.27 Um, and then hopefully when people read the book, 00:14:38.31\00:14:40.68 they feel that they've got a good general grasp 00:14:40.71\00:14:42.94 and they can launch often the deeper study. 00:14:42.98\00:14:44.58 Right. Yup. 00:14:44.61\00:14:45.95 So, "Prophecies of Daniel for Teens" 00:14:45.98\00:14:48.25 and "Prophecies of Revelation for Teens" 00:14:48.28\00:14:51.19 are the two books that we are going 00:14:51.22\00:14:53.05 to look at a little bit closely. 00:14:53.09\00:14:55.06 And we are going to take a moment now to take-- 00:14:55.09\00:14:57.03 to find out how you can get your copies of these books. 00:14:57.06\00:15:00.30 Watch this and we'll be right back. 00:15:00.33\00:15:01.80 Thank you. 00:15:01.83\00:15:04.77 Daniel wrote his book a long time ago and it's filled with 00:15:04.80\00:15:08.30 weird beasts and even stranger words like, 00:15:08.34\00:15:10.94 many, many -- 00:15:10.97\00:15:13.27 Can Daniel really tell us what to expect in the future? 00:15:13.31\00:15:16.51 And what about Revelation? 00:15:16.54\00:15:18.21 The symbolism can be difficult to understand. 00:15:18.25\00:15:21.18 What are the seven seals, scrolls, trumpets? 00:15:21.22\00:15:24.89 Though the animals in the book of Daniel were confusing, 00:15:24.92\00:15:28.02 the ones in Revelation are even stranger. 00:15:28.06\00:15:30.93 If you've ever asked these questions, 00:15:30.96\00:15:33.19 then these books by Seth Pierce, 00:15:33.23\00:15:35.70 the "Prophecies of Daniel for Teens" 00:15:35.73\00:15:37.53 and the "Prophecies of Revelation for Teens" 00:15:37.57\00:15:40.00 are a perfect match for you. 00:15:40.04\00:15:42.44 To get your copy of Seth's two outstanding books, 00:15:42.47\00:15:46.88 all you need to do is call 1-800-765-6955. 00:15:46.91\00:15:52.48 Stop by your local Adventist book center 00:15:52.51\00:15:55.12 or you can order online at www.AdventistBookCenter.com. 00:15:55.15\00:16:01.72 Welcome back. 00:16:05.39\00:16:06.73 We are visiting with one of your favorite authors, 00:16:06.76\00:16:08.70 Seth Pierce and we speaking to him 00:16:08.73\00:16:10.57 about his two books in particular, 00:16:10.60\00:16:12.73 "Prophecies of Daniel" and "Prophecies of Revelation," 00:16:12.77\00:16:16.81 both for teenagers. 00:16:16.84\00:16:18.17 Yes. 00:16:18.21\00:16:19.54 Seth, how would you describe um, 00:16:19.57\00:16:22.28 your approach to the topic of prophecy in these books? 00:16:22.31\00:16:25.98 You are writing to teenagers. Yes. 00:16:26.01\00:16:27.42 Are they even really interested in prophecy? 00:16:27.45\00:16:30.75 I think they are. 00:16:30.79\00:16:32.12 I think, the way we've typically approached prophecy, 00:16:32.15\00:16:37.89 you know, at least in my experience, 00:16:37.93\00:16:40.13 is it's usually during Evangelistic series 00:16:40.16\00:16:42.36 and while we advertise prophecy meetings. 00:16:42.40\00:16:45.20 And what typically happens is we will pick 00:16:45.23\00:16:47.30 certain portions of prophecy to share, you know, 00:16:47.34\00:16:49.94 with our distinctive beliefs of Seventh-day Adventist 00:16:49.97\00:16:51.91 and that's great. 00:16:51.94\00:16:53.44 But we don't really start a Chapter one of Revelation 00:16:53.48\00:16:56.81 or Chapter one of Daniel and let the narrative build 00:16:56.85\00:16:59.51 and so when you can take Revelation especially, 00:16:59.55\00:17:02.38 'cause that's not quite the narrative the Daniel 00:17:02.42\00:17:05.45 is and somehow make it chronological, 00:17:05.49\00:17:08.09 chapter by chapter and really weave it into 00:17:08.12\00:17:10.59 a narrative or a story. 00:17:10.63\00:17:12.26 They follow along, they are very interested 00:17:12.29\00:17:15.43 because they get to see the whole picture, 00:17:15.46\00:17:17.47 it's not just, you know, here's a doctrine, 00:17:17.50\00:17:18.83 here's a text, here's this truth and this truth. 00:17:18.87\00:17:21.14 It's like here's the big story, here's the big picture. 00:17:21.17\00:17:24.17 And it also allows you when you hit those doctrines, 00:17:24.21\00:17:26.68 those distinctive truths to look at different facets of it. 00:17:26.71\00:17:29.28 So, you know, if we talk about the Sabbath 00:17:29.31\00:17:30.75 or state of the dead, um, one of the things 00:17:30.78\00:17:32.91 that we can do is, as opposed to saying, 00:17:32.95\00:17:34.68 "Okay", here's several texts and things that prove that," 00:17:34.72\00:17:37.39 is, we can actually walk it back and say, 00:17:37.42\00:17:39.45 "This is how we discovered, you know, this belief. 00:17:39.49\00:17:41.99 This is how this belief comes about. 00:17:42.02\00:17:43.36 This is how this belief relates to multiple facets 00:17:43.39\00:17:46.43 of human existence particularly, 00:17:46.46\00:17:48.23 in the end-times." 00:17:48.26\00:17:50.53 It's um, it's just a fuller picture, 00:17:50.57\00:17:52.83 just really let's us look at different nuances 00:17:52.87\00:17:54.47 and so it comes across as being very fresh, 00:17:54.50\00:17:57.44 even though these truths has been in scripture 00:17:57.47\00:17:58.81 the entire time. 00:17:58.84\00:18:00.18 We just get to look at it with the entire backdrop 00:18:00.21\00:18:02.88 of Daniel and Revelation. 00:18:02.91\00:18:05.41 Well, how do you deal with people who may be questioning 00:18:05.45\00:18:08.35 the approach, who say, "Oh, you have to teach it 00:18:08.38\00:18:11.22 in this specific evangelistic way?" 00:18:11.25\00:18:14.19 I liked prophecy seminars as a kid, 00:18:14.22\00:18:16.99 honestly because of the scary element that we come through 00:18:17.03\00:18:20.50 some times and you are advocating an approach 00:18:20.53\00:18:22.83 that doesn't use necessarily the perspective of fear. 00:18:22.86\00:18:26.23 Right. 00:18:26.27\00:18:27.60 You know, I think, you know, fear is always 00:18:27.64\00:18:28.97 one of those things you can get some good short term 00:18:29.00\00:18:30.34 results with fear, but you, but it doesn't last 00:18:30.37\00:18:33.78 and I think anyone who's done an Evangelistic series, 00:18:33.81\00:18:37.01 you know, any pastor who's done one, 00:18:37.05\00:18:38.38 you know that you know, you could have a really 00:18:38.41\00:18:39.75 dynamic sort of meetings and then that's great, 00:18:39.78\00:18:42.35 I've got it in my head and thank you 00:18:42.38\00:18:43.72 for the good series and then leave 00:18:43.75\00:18:45.09 and they already become a part of the community 00:18:45.12\00:18:46.52 and when you can take these prophecies 00:18:46.55\00:18:48.42 and these truths and couch them in a grand narrative 00:18:48.46\00:18:49.79 or the grand story that God 00:18:49.82\00:18:51.16 is telling you the Great Controversy. 00:18:51.19\00:18:52.76 Now they understand, "Okay, this isn't something, 00:18:52.79\00:18:54.70 some doctrine in my head. 00:18:54.73\00:18:56.06 This is, this involves me as a character 00:18:56.10\00:18:58.77 in the story that God is telling 00:18:58.80\00:19:00.60 and it's just much bigger thing than just simply 00:19:00.64\00:19:03.10 a set of doctrine. 00:19:03.14\00:19:04.47 This is a much bigger deal and I've got a role of play 00:19:04.51\00:19:06.61 and I've got, I've got a plot, you know, to carry out, 00:19:06.64\00:19:08.98 you know, in this Great Controversy story." 00:19:09.01\00:19:11.65 And so people are fascinated by that and especially 00:19:11.68\00:19:13.45 when you can start connecting doctrines 00:19:13.48\00:19:14.85 that maybe have um, been become familiar with just because, 00:19:14.88\00:19:18.99 not necessarily that they could reproduce a Bible study for it, 00:19:19.02\00:19:21.46 but they just heard it. 00:19:21.49\00:19:22.82 But when you can present new facets of it 00:19:22.86\00:19:24.66 and connect it with a story and a big picture of scripture, 00:19:24.69\00:19:28.76 um, it becomes really fascinating, you know, 00:19:28.80\00:19:30.13 for them, 'cause they get to see 00:19:30.17\00:19:31.53 how it connects to everything else. 00:19:31.57\00:19:33.23 So you are basically saying you can't scare people into Heaven? 00:19:33.27\00:19:36.44 No, it doesn't, it doesn't work. 00:19:36.47\00:19:38.71 Unfortunately, you know, you can maybe get 00:19:38.74\00:19:41.04 their attention, you know, but to have a really lasting, 00:19:41.08\00:19:43.88 you know, relationship with God, 00:19:43.91\00:19:45.85 it's, it's got to be something deeper. 00:19:45.88\00:19:47.38 I like the way that you connect that with the, um, 00:19:47.42\00:19:50.42 the mega story, the big story of The Great Controversy. 00:19:50.45\00:19:53.89 I think that's one of the blessings that we have 00:19:53.92\00:19:56.06 as Seventh-day Adventist. 00:19:56.09\00:19:57.43 We have that understanding that there's more to our story 00:19:57.46\00:20:02.83 than just what we are experiencing here 00:20:02.86\00:20:05.47 and to be able to help them connect the dots in place, 00:20:05.50\00:20:08.77 these prophecies in the context of the Great Controversy. 00:20:08.80\00:20:12.84 It's really important. Yeah. 00:20:12.87\00:20:14.21 And that's exciting, you know, when you get to see um, 00:20:14.24\00:20:16.71 different nuances, I mean, every, I mean, 00:20:16.75\00:20:18.51 think about every proof text some are really used, 00:20:18.55\00:20:21.08 it's part of the story. 00:20:21.12\00:20:22.45 These are ones where every text is part of a chapter 00:20:22.48\00:20:24.55 which is part of a book which is a part of the... 00:20:24.59\00:20:27.16 I mean, there's a whole lot in the background 00:20:27.19\00:20:29.82 going on and when you can see that, 00:20:29.86\00:20:31.56 suddenly the text becomes very fresh and exciting 00:20:31.59\00:20:34.33 and there's different nuances to explore, 00:20:34.36\00:20:36.56 different ideas, so it's pretty cool. 00:20:36.60\00:20:38.87 So, as you're threading together these prophecies, 00:20:38.90\00:20:42.10 do you make a conscious decision as a writer to um, 00:20:42.14\00:20:46.11 make sure that your reader see Jesus? 00:20:46.14\00:20:47.84 Oh, yeah. 00:20:47.88\00:20:49.21 At the end of every chapter, it says, you know, 00:20:49.24\00:20:51.95 what does it tells about Jesus? 00:20:51.98\00:20:53.35 You know, 'cause we can look at some cool history 00:20:53.38\00:20:55.02 and we can talk about some interesting theology and-- 00:20:55.05\00:20:58.69 but ultimately, if we can connect it to Christ, 00:20:58.72\00:21:02.36 you know, it's just facts, you know. 00:21:02.39\00:21:04.13 Because I think that's for parents and for grandparents, 00:21:04.16\00:21:07.36 that's what we want, isn't it? 00:21:07.40\00:21:09.06 We want to connect to our kids with Jesus 00:21:09.10\00:21:12.10 and give them a sound understanding and knowledge 00:21:12.13\00:21:15.80 base of what they believe in and why they believe that. 00:21:15.84\00:21:18.81 Yeah, I think it's especially with Revelation. 00:21:18.84\00:21:20.28 I mean, I think you see Christ throughout scripture 00:21:20.31\00:21:22.08 but Revelation, I mean, you read or at the beginning, 00:21:22.11\00:21:25.08 this is the Revelation of... 00:21:25.11\00:21:26.45 Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ. 00:21:26.48\00:21:27.82 You know, and in that sense, you know, it's not a gospel, 00:21:27.85\00:21:32.05 you know like Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, 00:21:32.09\00:21:33.66 but in other sense it is like a fifth gospel. 00:21:33.69\00:21:35.19 I mean, this is really a whole new picture of 00:21:35.22\00:21:38.43 Jesus Christ that you don't get in the four gospels 00:21:38.46\00:21:41.56 that we tend to study more. 00:21:41.60\00:21:44.60 We want to go and learn more about Jesus, 00:21:44.63\00:21:46.33 I mean, I have sermons and presentations 00:21:46.37\00:21:48.54 where I talk about what the beasts tell us about Jesus. 00:21:48.57\00:21:51.97 I mean, you consider, I mean, as scary and as some people 00:21:52.01\00:21:54.78 don't like that and they think, "Ah, let's get rid of those 00:21:54.81\00:21:56.88 beasts and let's not send flyers out." 00:21:56.91\00:21:59.51 What's interesting to me is of Jesus, 00:21:59.55\00:22:01.12 if this Book of Revelations is about Jesus 00:22:01.15\00:22:02.98 and Jesus is the one giving John the Revelation, 00:22:03.02\00:22:04.95 who's the one picking the imagery? 00:22:04.99\00:22:07.52 So Jesus obviously has purpose with the beasts, 00:22:07.56\00:22:09.76 you know, what is He revealing about Himself 00:22:09.79\00:22:11.89 by choosing the images of the beast, you know, 00:22:11.93\00:22:14.96 and so yeah, you can see Christ throughout the whole thing. 00:22:15.00\00:22:17.87 Now when-- in the preaching moment, 00:22:17.90\00:22:19.73 as pastors we know, there are parts of a sermon, 00:22:19.77\00:22:22.60 where in the middle of preaching, 00:22:22.64\00:22:24.67 you almost take a step back because you realize 00:22:24.71\00:22:26.88 God is speaking directly to you based on what 00:22:26.91\00:22:29.91 you are presenting to your congregation. 00:22:29.94\00:22:32.01 Have there been times in writing, 00:22:32.05\00:22:34.48 what we believe about Daniel and Revelation for teens 00:22:34.52\00:22:37.12 that you took a step back and said, 00:22:37.15\00:22:38.99 "Man, God is having me write this because 00:22:39.02\00:22:41.29 He's trying to teach me something." 00:22:41.32\00:22:42.76 Yeah, it was for me, yeah. 00:22:42.79\00:22:44.13 Yeah, yeah, and I think um, 00:22:44.16\00:22:46.33 there's definite moments when you, 00:22:46.36\00:22:48.70 uh, as my editors will know, you know, 00:22:48.73\00:22:51.07 there's things that end up on the scrap room 00:22:51.10\00:22:53.70 for you can't put everything in there 00:22:53.74\00:22:55.07 and sometimes when those things that I wrote down 00:22:55.10\00:22:57.01 that didn't quite make the final edit, 00:22:57.04\00:22:58.94 they were for me 'cause I mean, I had the director's cut 00:22:58.97\00:23:00.71 manuscript on my hard drive, you know. 00:23:00.74\00:23:03.45 And I'll go back and look at those notes 00:23:03.48\00:23:05.31 and it's amazing when you go through 00:23:05.35\00:23:06.68 a process of writing something like that. 00:23:06.72\00:23:10.99 Yeah, you don't, you are not unaffected by it. 00:23:11.02\00:23:15.59 I mean, you really come away with some different insights 00:23:15.62\00:23:17.73 and images and metaphors and ways to articulate um, 00:23:17.76\00:23:22.06 how you see Christ in these books 00:23:22.10\00:23:23.73 or how you see the Adventist message in these books 00:23:23.77\00:23:26.07 and that's and we now never has the time to do it 00:23:26.10\00:23:28.40 or the um, maybe the psychosis to do it, 00:23:28.44\00:23:31.31 to go sit down and write something like that 00:23:31.34\00:23:33.01 but when you work systematically on your own, 00:23:33.04\00:23:36.98 I mean, you use all the resources available to you 00:23:37.01\00:23:39.41 but when you produce your own commentary, 00:23:39.45\00:23:43.05 you know, on Revelation or Daniel, you know, 00:23:43.08\00:23:45.22 with the help of the Holy Spirit 00:23:45.25\00:23:46.59 and Scripture and study. 00:23:46.62\00:23:47.96 I mean, even if you never preached it 00:23:47.99\00:23:50.09 or you never published it, it's an incredible, um, 00:23:50.13\00:23:54.26 it's an incredible blessing to you personally, yeah. 00:23:54.30\00:23:58.63 Yeah. 00:23:58.67\00:24:00.40 What do you think parents want you 00:24:00.44\00:24:03.41 to communicate with their kids? 00:24:03.44\00:24:08.94 It depends on the parent. It depends on the kid. 00:24:08.98\00:24:13.78 I would hope, the love of Jesus, 00:24:13.82\00:24:17.15 fundamentally to know that their child matters. 00:24:17.19\00:24:19.99 Yes. 00:24:20.02\00:24:21.36 And it's love and has an important part to play 00:24:21.39\00:24:23.46 in The Great Controversy that they are a character 00:24:23.49\00:24:26.39 in this great story they God is telling, and um, 00:24:26.43\00:24:29.26 they are important, you know, 00:24:29.30\00:24:30.90 and they're worth dying for, 00:24:30.93\00:24:32.47 and so they have a life that's worth living. 00:24:32.50\00:24:34.00 Unfortunately, we are out of time 00:24:34.04\00:24:36.37 in our program and happens just about every single time. 00:24:36.40\00:24:39.67 If you could, Seth, in just a few moments 00:24:39.71\00:24:41.61 looking to the camera, and maybe speak 00:24:41.64\00:24:43.75 to the young person or even the older person who, 00:24:43.78\00:24:46.55 when they think about scripture think it's too complicated 00:24:46.58\00:24:49.52 to really understand, what would you say 00:24:49.55\00:24:52.02 to try to get through to them? 00:24:52.05\00:24:54.76 That's tough. 00:24:54.79\00:24:56.83 I think first of all, um, just pray, you know, 00:24:56.86\00:24:59.93 and ask the Holy Spirit for guidance 00:24:59.96\00:25:01.70 and know that there's always more to learn. 00:25:01.73\00:25:06.23 You know, sometimes I think we take for granted, um, 00:25:06.27\00:25:08.50 that we know everything, especially when we're younger 00:25:08.54\00:25:10.87 and uh, there are incredible resources 00:25:10.91\00:25:13.68 and even though we might be young, um, 00:25:13.71\00:25:18.41 it's amazing the insight that God can give us, 00:25:18.45\00:25:20.28 you know, when we, um, submit ourselves to Him and uh, 00:25:20.32\00:25:23.52 I know He's got a messages He wants to share with everyone, 00:25:23.55\00:25:25.49 and so it's worth the time to put in and discover. 00:25:25.52\00:25:28.26 That's awesome. 00:25:28.29\00:25:29.62 You know, and, Seth, as someone who shares your book 00:25:29.66\00:25:32.53 with a lot of young people, I just want to really affirm 00:25:32.56\00:25:35.60 the gift that God has given you, 00:25:35.63\00:25:37.17 for being able to take these difficult concepts 00:25:37.20\00:25:39.83 and as we read in our scripture reading, 00:25:39.87\00:25:41.67 at the start of the program, to write it 00:25:41.70\00:25:44.11 and to make it plain, that we can give it our kids, 00:25:44.14\00:25:47.81 to our grandchildren and they can run with it. 00:25:47.84\00:25:50.31 Yes, absolutely. 00:25:50.35\00:25:51.68 And for being with and take up the challenge, 00:25:51.71\00:25:53.75 as a young man and do it. 00:25:53.78\00:25:55.72 You serve as an example as a young people 00:25:55.75\00:25:58.25 around the world and we thank you for that. 00:25:58.29\00:26:00.12 Praise the Lord. Thank you. 00:26:00.16\00:26:01.49 We've been having a conversation today with 00:26:01.52\00:26:02.86 Seth Pierce about his books, what we believe, 00:26:02.89\00:26:06.09 about Daniel and Revelation for Teens 00:26:06.13\00:26:08.26 and his story reminds us that this whole thing 00:26:08.30\00:26:11.43 about the gospel and a relationship with Jesus 00:26:11.47\00:26:14.37 and the dynamics of the Bible are not just for old people, 00:26:14.40\00:26:17.87 it's for young people too. 00:26:17.91\00:26:19.24 The message was taken around the world, 00:26:19.27\00:26:20.88 Jesus called a bunch of young men 00:26:20.91\00:26:24.88 and He empowered them to share a gospel 00:26:24.91\00:26:27.32 and that same Jesus today is still calling young men 00:26:27.35\00:26:30.55 and young women, maybe like someone as you 00:26:30.59\00:26:32.79 watching the program today 00:26:32.82\00:26:34.66 to take the gospel around the world. 00:26:34.69\00:26:36.89 This has been another episode of Stones of Remembrance. 00:26:36.93\00:26:40.70 My name is Pierre Quinn and from my co-host, Karen Pearson, 00:26:40.73\00:26:43.93 we thank you for being on this journey with us 00:26:43.97\00:26:46.87 and we'd like you to join us next time as we sit down 00:26:46.90\00:26:49.64 and have another conversation with your favorite author 00:26:49.67\00:26:52.57 and about their journey. 00:26:52.61\00:26:53.98 Take care and we'll see you next time. 00:26:54.01\00:26:55.94 "What the Bible Says About" 00:27:29.68\00:27:31.05 contains two powerful aids to Bible study. 00:27:31.08\00:27:34.08 First, there are 31 Bible studies on topics like 00:27:34.12\00:27:37.09 The Origin of Sin, Life After Death, 00:27:37.12\00:27:39.75 Angels, and the Sabbath. 00:27:39.79\00:27:41.56 Second, there's an easy to use Bible marking plan 00:27:41.59\00:27:45.26 that will help you transform your own Bible 00:27:45.29\00:27:48.10 into a virtual encyclopedia of biblical information 00:27:48.13\00:27:51.83 that you can share with others. 00:27:51.87\00:27:54.00 By using this plan, you can follow key subjects 00:27:54.04\00:27:57.37 throughout your Bible, learning and teaching 00:27:57.41\00:28:00.04 what God's word has to say about each important topic. 00:28:00.08\00:28:04.31 "What the Bible Says About" was written by 00:28:04.35\00:28:06.65 former Voice of Prophecy speaker and director, 00:28:06.68\00:28:09.12 Lonnie Melashenko. 00:28:09.15\00:28:10.69 Quantity pricing is available. 00:28:10.72\00:28:12.75 To get your copy of "What the Bible Says About," 00:28:12.79\00:28:15.96 call 1-800-765-6955. 00:28:15.99\00:28:20.00 Stop by your local Adventist book-center 00:28:20.03\00:28:22.83 or order online at www.AdventistBookCenter.com. 00:28:22.86\00:28:27.20
