And essentially what happened,
I'll never forget that night,

it was 1996,

a year earlier the Lord
had miraculously healed me

after a year of
suffering from vertigo

and He had taught me to
claim His promises in a way

that I was affirming them
and praying them back to Him.

And I had just
had a wonderful year

of growing closer to
the Lord through His word,

through praying His word

and the week before I
went to see my sister,

it had been insane.

It was so hectic, that I hadn't
taken time to really do that.

So I got into the car
and it was a six hour drive.

deserted state highways

central part of Texas

And so I didn't really,

it didn't require
any concentration.

And as soon as I got

my soul was
thirsting for the Lord.

that I had been too busy

and I was praying

and just giving Him

it was really a
worship experience

the line I began then,

prayer and communication

uninterrupted for six hours.

And it was so interesting
because just as I was...

I was just drawing
closer and closer to the Lord

and I can sense He was
drawing closer to me, you know.

really no interruptions

the land mark that let me know

that I was just
outside of Roswell, New Mexico,

I've just, I haven't
felt this close to You ever.

And I said, "Father,

And I'm praying and I said,

"Oh, Lord, I want

and it was just so intense,

suddenly it was just

was doing that night.

I was really seeking His face.

Now I mentioned in the book

that I've never
again prayed for six hours.

I've never had that...
that was one time experience,

I wanted to ask you, Shelley,

was the fasted trip

I'd jokingly say
that car was on autopilot,

I was definitely
in control of the car,

but it was just
such a joyful experience

that experience again.

And you would think,

could do that again."

But that would
be the wrong thing,

if you are ever
seeking God for an experience,

I think it's wrong.

I think that those
kind of things happen

here and there in our lives

that they're very
special gifts from God.

But I'm not an
overly emotional person.

I wasn't
seeking that experience,

it was just a gift from God.

And what a sweet
gift. Yes, it was.

Now one thing,

as you mention about the prayers

that, up until this
time, because of busyness,

you hadn't spend that time
with God like you needed to.

But on some cases,

maybe we don't
spend time with God

because we're fearful.

Why is it that you think

that we could be apprehensive

of going deeper
into the presence of God?

I think that many people,

with the very strange

and distorted image of the Lord.

I really did I was taught

I had to be
perfect to be loved by God.

I grew up in a
dysfunctional environment.

I had a love affair with Jesus

but as far as
seeking the Father,

I thought God was
just watching over me.

Ready to get you.

Ready to get me,
exactly, you know.

And I think that,

to develop a
passion for God's presence,

what we have to do
is understand His love

His love and His character

Here I'd had this beautiful year

But then, I took a consulting
job in Houston, Texas.

And for 18 months I was on
the road with this business.

And I mean, I was
on the road, 12, 12--

We were working 12 hour days
but it was seven days a week.

I mean, it was a startup company

and they had me
traveling all over.

And so obviously, I
couldn't go to church

because I'm on the road

and I'm giving
seminars and symposiums.

And I was
reasoning with the Lord,

that oh, Lord, this
is only for a short time

that I'm forsaking the assembly.

Don't worry; I'm

And I got to that
point where I was reading

the obligatory chapter
of my Bible every night.

But I wasn't
spending time in the word.

And my prayers
were just little short,

it's kind of like
fast food prayers.

You know, it's just a little
short drive through prayers

where the five minutes of prayer

and you think
okay, that's enough.

And so what happened
after 18 months of that is that.

I was lower than a--

spiritually, I was so
low on the totem pole.

And I remember one
day I got in the car,

I was driving to Sam's
and that was from this--

we were living in Central Texas.

It was an hour long
drive and as I got in the car

which is one of my
favorite prayer closets,

I'm going down the road.

And I'm praying and I said

"Lord, how can I
be so close to You

that, I feel Your heart beat,

and then find myself in
such a backslidden condition?

I don't understand it.

And God so clearly, I mean,
it was an hour prayer there

and I didn't get an answer

'cause I mean, I was
praying earnestly for that hour.

Then I went into
Sam's, did my shopping.

Got back in the car
and I'm driving back

and I'm still seeking
God for how could I backslide

and He so clearly spoke to
me, with a still small voice

that 1 Kings 19:12 speaks of

and, and He said,
"Child, if you will come--

I asked and I said,
00:12:10.19\00:12:11.53
"Lord, how I can
keep from backsliding?
00:12:11.56\00:12:13.50
I mean, I'm weeping
going down the road.
00:12:13.53\00:12:15.56
If you saw me drive, you
know, one hand on the wheel,

I'm praying, I mean, whatever.
00:12:17.60\00:12:19.87
And so the Lord just
clearly spoke and said

"Child, if you will come to Me

and spend one hour
with Me each morning,

I promise you'll
never backslide again."

I thought, "Oh, You've

is the story, it's
the pattern of prayer,

it's how God taught me to pray.

affirmations, intercession

study on the sanctuary,

But I know I've seen a

haven't really seen it

I love it in Isaiah 59:16,

the Lord is
speaking and He is talking

how there is no righteousness

there's, there's, there's
all these things going on

in the land and He says,

"He saw that there was
no man, no intercessor...

and wondered that
there was no intercessor."

Can you imagine,

you, we've heard
this Scripture you know

that God's looking for
someone to stand in the gap.

But He looks down and
He sees no one's praying

and it causes God to wonder.

He's wondering two things,

one, why we don't love
people enough to pray for them

and two, why we don't
have enough faith in Him

to believe that prayers
going to make a difference.

Because so, to be an intercessor

we just have to
get to that point

where we have a love for people.

I think people who had
the gift of intercessory

prayer as you've
said or designated,

are people who have got that

empathetic
connection with others.

And so they do pray.

And they have become convinced

that God is
faithful to His promises

and that He is all powerful.

So Intercessory
prayer is not something

that God just
gives someone with,

it's something that is developed

when we
understand that He can do,

He can change
things and that we can,

if we love people
enough to pray for them.

I think one of
the biggest examples

that we see of that in Scripture

is near the end of Job.

Where, where it says

"The Lord turned away
the captivity of Job."

"And doubly blessed Him."
00:20:40.67\00:20:42.40
"When he prayed."
"For his friends."

So there's power there...

You see that's the point to
intercessory prayer is that,

you don't want
people to do it selfishly.

Right. Right, right.

But intercessors
are doubly blessed

and you know, for myself,

my sister was a
drug addict for 15 years.

And I prayed so
earnestly, I interceded

because the way I look at it
is God is a God of love and He,

as a God of love, He
longs to bless people.

But He won't force
His way upon anyone.

So it's like He puts
handcuffs of love on Himself

that He's not gonna
force His will upon you

and intercessory
prayer is the key

that unlocks those handcuffs.

So my sister wasn't
praying for herself.

She's a drug addict.

I prayed so earnestly

and I would pray
and I would claim.

Act 26:18 and I would say,

well, first I'd
pray Psalm 129:4,

"That the Lord is righteous.

He'll cut you free from
the cord of the wicked."

And I pray that
and I pray Acts 26:18

and say, "Oh,
Lord, open her eyes.

Turn her from darkness to light,

from the power of
Satan to You, Father,

that she might
find an inheritance

among those who are
sanctified by faith in You."

And then I pray
Romans 8:13 and say Lord...

which says that

"It's by the power
of the Holy Spirit,

misdeeds of the flesh."

And I'm-- it's like

"Lord, pour out
Your Spirit on her,

and let Him
bring her to that point

where she can overcome this."

And after my
sister came to her senses,

I mean, God chased her down

and she came to her senses,

He healed her immediately,
from a 15 year drug habit.

And she thanked me.
She just recently died.

And it was
extremely tough for me

but she thanked me,
at least once a week
00:22:24.31\00:22:28.04
for 28 years of her sobriety

that I had prayed for her

she would bring
it up all the time.

She said, "I knew
you were praying for me.

I knew there
were angels around me.

I should have been dead
so many different times."

So intercessory prayer
does make a difference.

a component of perseverance
in prayer there too.

far as persevering in prayer

that I will pray and

So then I
continually thank Him in prayer.

But one thing about

and I don't want to say in this,

I use this
particular prayer pattern

because it does
model the sanctuary way.

frequently in a short prayer,

but as far as,

really if you want to get
in to the presence of the Lord.

I don't hear from God

when I've got all
the filters on that

because you
know, life is so busy

and you just don't have--

It takes time to hear from God.

You've got to really get into
His presence and keep praying.

Be intentional.

praying his promises back,
