Well welcome to presentation number eight 00:00:14.41\00:00:17.81 in the series on, The Secrets of Pentecost. 00:00:18.41\00:00:21.25 We have a very exciting subject to study today. 00:00:21.82\00:00:24.55 The title is, The Tongues of Men and Angels. 00:00:24.95\00:00:28.89 What are the languages of angels? 00:00:29.76\00:00:31.99 Well, we're going to take a look and see. 00:00:32.03\00:00:34.10 But before we do, we want to ask for the Lord's presence, 00:00:34.36\00:00:38.13 as we always do before we open His Word. 00:00:38.17\00:00:40.60 So let's bow our heads for a word of prayer. 00:00:41.07\00:00:43.44 Our loving Father, we come before Your throne, 00:00:45.07\00:00:48.34 as we have every session before, to plead for the 00:00:48.38\00:00:53.11 presence of Your Holy Spirit through the ministry 00:00:53.15\00:00:55.08 of the angels. 00:00:55.12\00:00:56.45 We are going to study very important things. 00:00:57.35\00:00:59.55 Things that are misunderstood to a great degree 00:01:00.52\00:01:04.69 in the Christian world. 00:01:04.73\00:01:06.06 And we want to understand things as You would have them 00:01:06.63\00:01:09.76 understood from Your Holy Word. 00:01:09.80\00:01:11.77 Remove preconceived notions, remove obstacles from our 00:01:12.43\00:01:16.94 minds and hearts, that we might be able to hear Your voice 00:01:16.97\00:01:20.91 speaking to us. 00:01:20.94\00:01:22.28 We thank You, Father for the privilege of approaching 00:01:22.78\00:01:25.01 Your throne in prayer. 00:01:25.05\00:01:26.38 And we know that You have heard this prayer 00:01:26.92\00:01:29.02 because we come before Your throne in the mighty 00:01:29.58\00:01:32.35 and powerful name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. 00:01:32.39\00:01:35.69 Amen. 00:01:35.99\00:01:37.33 We'd like to begin our study today by turning in our Bibles 00:01:39.36\00:01:42.83 to Matthew 28:19-20. 00:01:42.86\00:01:47.30 Now these are words that Jesus spoke immediately before 00:01:48.07\00:01:52.34 His ascension to heaven. 00:01:52.37\00:01:53.94 And so let's read there in Matthew 28:19-20 00:01:54.68\00:01:59.91 where Jesus gives the great commission to His disciples. 00:02:00.35\00:02:04.12 It says there... 00:02:04.89\00:02:06.22 So where are the disciples supposed to go? 00:02:11.19\00:02:13.40 To all of the nations to make disciples. 00:02:14.03\00:02:16.60 And then what are they supposed to do? 00:02:16.70\00:02:18.57 So the great commission involves preaching, doesn't it? 00:02:37.22\00:02:40.49 Jesus is saying, "I want you to go out 00:02:41.09\00:02:43.43 and I want you to preach the gospel to all of the nations." 00:02:43.46\00:02:47.20 Now in Mark 16, there is a passage which is 00:02:47.73\00:02:52.33 parallel to this one. 00:02:52.37\00:02:53.97 In other words, it's taking place in the same time frame 00:02:54.34\00:02:57.81 as Matthew 28. 00:02:57.84\00:02:59.34 Only, it adds details that we don't find in Matthew 28. 00:03:00.18\00:03:04.31 So let's read that passage. 00:03:04.61\00:03:05.98 Mark 16 and beginning with verse 15, 00:03:06.01\00:03:09.95 and we'll read through verse 18. 00:03:09.98\00:03:12.22 So what is the mission that Jesus gives to His disciples? 00:03:20.60\00:03:23.77 To go into all of the world and preach the 00:03:24.27\00:03:26.94 gospel to every creature. 00:03:26.97\00:03:28.34 In other words, the purpose of the giving of the Holy Spirit 00:03:28.37\00:03:32.74 is to empower the disciples to preach the gospel. 00:03:32.77\00:03:36.28 And then notice that when they preach, 00:03:36.78\00:03:38.81 there are going to be believers. 00:03:38.85\00:03:40.22 So it's speaking about those who hear the message. 00:03:49.42\00:03:51.76 And then it says in verse 17, "And these signs..." 00:03:52.16\00:03:56.20 Remember that word, because we're going to come back to it 00:03:56.77\00:03:58.93 in our next study. 00:03:58.97\00:04:00.30 This is right before the ascension of Christ. 00:04:12.61\00:04:14.55 Now some people have misunderstood this 00:04:21.52\00:04:23.29 and they have church where they pick up snakes on purpose. 00:04:23.32\00:04:26.66 This is saying, if by accident a snake bites you, 00:04:26.93\00:04:30.27 you know, and it's a poisonous snake, you're not going to die. 00:04:30.30\00:04:33.23 And some people, some Christians, even drink poison. 00:04:33.47\00:04:36.94 They say, "Well, because God gave the promise that 00:04:36.97\00:04:38.74 if I drink poison, it's not going to hurt me." 00:04:38.77\00:04:40.38 Well the fact is, that's presumption. 00:04:40.88\00:04:42.74 It's saying, if by accident or somebody plans to kill you 00:04:43.28\00:04:46.11 by putting something poisonous in your drink, 00:04:46.15\00:04:48.42 God is going to overrule. 00:04:48.62\00:04:49.95 But it's not giving you license to pick up snakes 00:04:49.98\00:04:52.52 and to drink poison stuff. 00:04:52.55\00:04:54.02 And so it continues saying... 00:04:54.66\00:04:55.99 These are all spiritual gifts, aren't they? 00:05:07.14\00:05:09.10 Tongues, the gift of healing, the gift of exorcism. 00:05:09.14\00:05:13.17 In other words, God is going to give gifts to those 00:05:13.24\00:05:16.78 who believe and receive the gospel of Christ. 00:05:16.81\00:05:19.58 Now in summary, three key points that I want us 00:05:19.91\00:05:22.35 to notice in this passage. 00:05:22.38\00:05:23.72 Number one, the mission is to preach the gospel 00:05:23.75\00:05:27.09 in the whole world. 00:05:27.12\00:05:28.46 Number two, the purpose of preaching the gospel 00:05:28.56\00:05:31.73 is so that people will believe and will be baptized. 00:05:31.83\00:05:35.13 And those who believe and are baptized 00:05:35.60\00:05:39.07 will receive the gift of tongues. 00:05:39.17\00:05:42.00 It doesn't say everyone will receive the gift of healing. 00:05:42.04\00:05:44.94 It doesn't say everyone will receive the gift of exorcism. 00:05:45.07\00:05:48.14 It doesn't say everyone will receive the gift of tongues. 00:05:48.31\00:05:51.28 The Holy Spirit, we're going to find, gives the gifts 00:05:51.55\00:05:54.38 according to the need of the time according to what the 00:05:54.48\00:05:57.65 Holy Spirit wills, not what human beings will. 00:05:57.69\00:06:01.26 Now we need to ask the question, when Mark 16 says 00:06:01.82\00:06:07.16 that those who believe will speak with new tongues, 00:06:07.20\00:06:10.77 what does that mean, "new tongues"? 00:06:11.60\00:06:13.90 Well let me tell you what the Bible versions do. 00:06:13.94\00:06:16.30 The New Century Version, as well as many others, 00:06:16.94\00:06:20.38 translate the word, "tongues," there as, "new languages." 00:06:20.68\00:06:24.88 In other words, the word that is used there is, "glóssa," 00:06:25.28\00:06:28.25 where we get the word, "glossolalia," from. 00:06:28.28\00:06:30.75 Which means, to speak in tongues. 00:06:30.85\00:06:32.42 And so many Bible versions, they don't say believers will 00:06:32.75\00:06:37.26 speak new tongues. 00:06:37.29\00:06:38.63 They say that they will speak new languages. 00:06:38.66\00:06:40.93 And that's precisely what Jesus means, by the way. 00:06:40.96\00:06:43.80 We're going to notice that. 00:06:43.83\00:06:45.17 And a slim minority of Bible versions, such as for example, 00:06:45.43\00:06:50.44 the Good News Translation and Today's English Version, 00:06:50.47\00:06:53.88 they say that people will speak in strange tongues. 00:06:54.14\00:06:59.48 Now that is a mistranslation, because it does not 00:06:59.81\00:07:03.25 say, "strange tongues." 00:07:03.28\00:07:04.85 It simply says, "glóssais." 00:07:04.89\00:07:06.89 In other words, they will speak in tongues, in new tongues. 00:07:06.99\00:07:10.49 To say that they are strange tongues is an interpretation. 00:07:10.79\00:07:14.70 It is not a translation. 00:07:14.80\00:07:16.16 Unless by that you mean that they're strange 00:07:16.43\00:07:19.27 to the person who is speaking them because 00:07:19.30\00:07:20.97 they've never spoken that language before. 00:07:21.00\00:07:22.90 Now the question then is, for whom are these tongues new? 00:07:23.54\00:07:27.88 Are they new for the people who are speaking them? 00:07:28.81\00:07:32.81 Or are they new in the sense that they're not spoken 00:07:33.01\00:07:35.75 anywhere on planet earth? 00:07:35.78\00:07:37.52 I believe, in the light of what we've studied in our 00:07:37.89\00:07:39.69 previous session, they are languages which are spoken 00:07:39.72\00:07:42.96 somewhere on planet earth but which the preacher did not 00:07:42.99\00:07:45.96 previously know, which the preacher received 00:07:45.99\00:07:48.56 by a miraculous intervention of God. 00:07:48.60\00:07:51.43 Incidentally, in Acts 2:4, and verse 41, and verse 44, 00:07:51.93\00:07:58.11 we find the identical ideas that we just read in Mark 16. 00:07:58.71\00:08:03.71 You have the idea of receiving the Holy Spirit, 00:08:04.25\00:08:07.05 you have the idea of speaking in new tongues, 00:08:07.58\00:08:10.92 you have the idea of unbelievers believing 00:08:11.25\00:08:14.22 when they hear the Word spoken in their own language, 00:08:14.26\00:08:17.53 and you also have the idea of those who believe 00:08:17.79\00:08:20.90 being baptized and receiving the Holy Spirit. 00:08:20.93\00:08:24.00 So we know that what Mark 16 is referring to 00:08:24.03\00:08:28.17 is the same gift that took place on the day of Pentecost. 00:08:28.27\00:08:31.54 And we've already studied that on the day of Pentecost, 00:08:31.64\00:08:34.24 those were not unknown tongues in the sense of gibberish, 00:08:34.48\00:08:38.58 a language that is spoken nowhere on planet earth, 00:08:38.68\00:08:41.02 but it refers to languages which those who spoke did not 00:08:41.05\00:08:44.99 know before, which the Holy Spirit gave them 00:08:45.02\00:08:47.36 the capacity to speak. 00:08:47.39\00:08:49.39 Now let's review what the purpose of the 00:08:50.43\00:08:52.59 gift of tongues is. 00:08:52.63\00:08:54.13 What is the purpose according to the passage in Mark? 00:08:54.63\00:08:57.70 It's for preaching the gospel to every creature, isn't it? 00:08:58.03\00:09:00.94 Isn't that the purpose of the gift of tongues 00:09:01.20\00:09:03.20 also according to Acts 1? 00:09:03.24\00:09:05.44 Let's read again what Jesus said in Acts 1:8. 00:09:05.84\00:09:10.95 It's so clear that the gift of the Holy Spirit 00:09:10.98\00:09:14.15 and the gift of tongues is given for witnessing. 00:09:14.18\00:09:17.35 It is given for evangelism. 00:09:17.55\00:09:19.45 It is not given so that a person can speak in a tongue 00:09:19.65\00:09:22.76 that is spoken nowhere on planet earth. 00:09:22.79\00:09:24.83 That's not practical, that's not going to win any souls, 00:09:24.96\00:09:27.43 because they're not going to understand 00:09:27.46\00:09:29.06 what the speaker is saying. 00:09:29.10\00:09:30.43 And so notice what Jesus said in Acts 1:8. 00:09:30.97\00:09:35.04 Notice the purpose of the power. 00:09:44.48\00:09:45.81 So the purpose of the gift of tongues is to witness. 00:09:58.89\00:10:01.90 Now did you notice the sequence of places where 00:10:02.23\00:10:07.07 the disciples were suppose to witness? 00:10:07.10\00:10:09.30 It says that they were suppose to witness in Jerusalem, 00:10:09.67\00:10:12.47 in Judea, Samaria, and then to the end of the earth. 00:10:12.77\00:10:16.75 By the way, this verse gives you the basic structure 00:10:16.95\00:10:20.52 of the book of Acts. 00:10:20.55\00:10:21.88 Let me just go through the book of Acts in broad strokes 00:10:22.95\00:10:26.49 so that you can see that this one verse gives you 00:10:26.52\00:10:29.26 the sequence or the movement of the gospel 00:10:29.29\00:10:32.16 in the entire book of Acts. 00:10:32.19\00:10:33.76 In Mark 16:15-17 where Jesus speaks of new tongues, 00:10:34.66\00:10:39.43 Jesus is in the upper room in Mark 16. 00:10:40.64\00:10:44.44 Actually, He's not in the upper room. 00:10:44.47\00:10:45.87 He's actually right before the ascension 00:10:45.91\00:10:48.71 with the disciples upon the Mount of Olives. 00:10:49.08\00:10:52.78 But then in Acts chapter 2 through chapter 7 you find 00:10:52.81\00:10:57.39 that the events are taking place in Jerusalem. 00:10:57.69\00:11:01.52 Remember, Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, 00:11:02.16\00:11:04.09 to the ends of the earth. 00:11:04.13\00:11:05.46 And so, from Acts 2 through chapter 7, 00:11:05.49\00:11:09.23 you have events that are transpiring in Jerusalem. 00:11:09.26\00:11:11.73 And of course, Acts 7 speaks about the stoning of Stephen. 00:11:11.93\00:11:15.20 But this is all happening in Jerusalem. 00:11:16.20\00:11:18.77 Then in Acts 8:1-2, which we're not going to read, 00:11:19.27\00:11:22.61 we're told that the disciples were dispersed to Judea 00:11:23.01\00:11:29.12 because of the persecution in Jerusalem. 00:11:29.32\00:11:31.39 So in Acts 8:1-2, the gospel has gone to Judea 00:11:31.42\00:11:34.69 because the disciples are persecuted 00:11:34.72\00:11:37.49 and they have to spread out. 00:11:37.53\00:11:39.73 Then if you go to Acts 8:4-25, the disciples are actually 00:11:40.36\00:11:46.40 preaching in Samaria. 00:11:46.43\00:11:48.07 Notice the sequence: Jerusalem, then Judea chapter 8:1-2, 00:11:48.10\00:11:52.91 then Samaria. 00:11:53.07\00:11:54.81 And it's interesting to notice in Acts 8:6-7 00:11:55.18\00:11:59.75 when the gospel goes to Samaria, two signs are mentioned 00:11:59.78\00:12:03.79 that the apostles were actually performing. 00:12:03.82\00:12:07.36 One was casting out demons, 00:12:07.39\00:12:09.92 and the other one was healing people. 00:12:10.13\00:12:12.86 Are those two of the gifts that Jesus had mentioned in Mark 16? 00:12:13.06\00:12:16.87 Absolutely. 00:12:17.07\00:12:18.40 Now when you get to Acts 9, you have the conversion 00:12:18.47\00:12:23.91 of Saul of Tarsus. 00:12:23.94\00:12:25.41 So I want you to notice the sequence here. 00:12:25.64\00:12:27.78 In Mark 16:15-17, Jesus is about to ascend to heaven, 00:12:28.28\00:12:35.48 and He speaks these words; that His followers will 00:12:35.65\00:12:38.39 speak in new tongues. 00:12:38.42\00:12:39.79 Acts 2 through 7, the events are taking place in Jerusalem. 00:12:40.06\00:12:43.39 Acts 8:1-2, the events are taking place in Judea. 00:12:43.69\00:12:47.13 Acts 8:4-25, the events are taking place in Samaria. 00:12:47.50\00:12:52.40 And then in Acts 9, you have the conversion of Saul of Tarsus. 00:12:52.87\00:12:56.77 Now why would the conversion of Saul of Tarsus 00:12:57.27\00:12:59.87 be particularly significant? 00:13:00.08\00:13:02.48 Because Saul of Tarsus was going to take the gospel 00:13:02.98\00:13:05.75 to the utter most ends of the earth 00:13:05.78\00:13:08.35 on his missionary journeys. 00:13:08.38\00:13:09.85 Right? 00:13:09.92\00:13:11.25 Which is what happens in the rest of the book of Acts. 00:13:11.29\00:13:14.16 In Acts 10 and 11, the gospel goes to Caesarea. 00:13:14.46\00:13:18.89 In Acts 18, the gospel goes to Corinth. 00:13:19.46\00:13:23.63 In Acts 19, the gospel goes to Ephesus. 00:13:23.97\00:13:27.40 And of course, there are many other places 00:13:27.44\00:13:29.14 where the apostle Paul took the message as well. 00:13:29.17\00:13:31.61 So do you see that the structure of the book of Acts 00:13:31.87\00:13:35.61 is found in this one verse? 00:13:35.64\00:13:37.28 The message begins in Jerusalem. 00:13:37.68\00:13:40.52 Actually, when Jesus is about to ascend to heaven 00:13:40.55\00:13:43.69 He speaks of the new tongues. 00:13:43.72\00:13:45.15 Then the message goes to Jerusalem, 00:13:45.29\00:13:47.66 then it goes to Judea, then it goes to Samaria, 00:13:47.69\00:13:50.56 and eventually it goes to the ends of the earth, 00:13:50.73\00:13:55.13 as Jesus had predicted. 00:13:55.16\00:13:57.03 Now I want to read you a couple of statements 00:13:57.57\00:14:00.04 from the spirit of prophecy on the gift of tongues 00:14:00.07\00:14:02.70 on the day of Pentecost. 00:14:02.74\00:14:04.07 One of these I've read before, but the other one I have not. 00:14:04.31\00:14:07.81 The first one from, Desire of Ages, 821, 00:14:07.84\00:14:10.45 I have not read in a previous lecture. 00:14:10.55\00:14:12.21 The second one I have. 00:14:12.25\00:14:13.58 But I want to read it again because it tells us 00:14:13.62\00:14:16.02 what the gift of tongues, of speaking in new tongues, was. 00:14:16.05\00:14:20.06 It says there in, Desire of Ages, 821... 00:14:20.09\00:14:22.62 The spoke the languages without an accent. 00:15:07.00\00:15:10.04 That's amazing. 00:15:10.87\00:15:12.21 Now the second statement, as I mentioned I already read, 00:15:12.67\00:15:15.64 Acts of the Apostles, pages 39-40. 00:15:15.68\00:15:19.21 Speaking about the gift of tongues that was given 00:15:20.75\00:15:23.02 to the apostles, it says... 00:15:23.05\00:15:24.69 What is meant by, "fluency"? 00:15:33.86\00:15:35.60 Naturally, easily. Right? 00:15:36.36\00:15:38.50 Remember what happened at Babel? 00:15:53.78\00:15:55.38 The tongues were confused because God didn't want 00:15:55.92\00:15:57.95 evil to consolidate, to centralize, in one place. 00:15:57.99\00:16:01.22 So God says, "I'll make it very difficult for evil 00:16:01.26\00:16:03.56 to consolidate and to form a global system against God. 00:16:03.59\00:16:07.10 So I'll spread them out in different languages, 00:16:07.13\00:16:09.63 in different tongues, different cultures, 00:16:09.73\00:16:11.63 so that they don't get along and so you don't have a 00:16:11.67\00:16:14.84 united rebellion against my kingdom." 00:16:14.87\00:16:16.44 Of course, that created a problem on the day of Pentecost. 00:16:16.47\00:16:19.71 Because the apostles could only speak Aramaic, 00:16:19.74\00:16:21.91 and there were many languages there. 00:16:21.94\00:16:23.88 And so God says, "I'm going to undo what happened at Babel. 00:16:23.91\00:16:27.05 I'm going to give My servants the capacity 00:16:27.08\00:16:28.98 to speak those languages." 00:16:29.02\00:16:30.39 And so she continues saying... 00:16:30.82\00:16:32.59 What was it they were going to speak? 00:16:56.34\00:16:58.18 They were going to speak gibberish, right? 00:16:58.21\00:16:59.78 Words that nobody could understand. 00:16:59.88\00:17:01.38 Of course not. 00:17:01.42\00:17:02.75 A sign, if you please. 00:17:18.70\00:17:20.04 Those are my words there. 00:17:20.07\00:17:21.40 So was this a sign to unbelievers that God 00:17:26.17\00:17:29.24 had worked powerfully for them? 00:17:29.28\00:17:31.01 That's an important point. 00:17:31.25\00:17:32.58 Because tomorrow, 1 Corinthians 14, 00:17:32.61\00:17:34.22 we're going to see that the gift of tongues is for unbelievers. 00:17:34.32\00:17:37.92 Now notice what it continues saying. 00:17:37.95\00:17:39.59 But now we need to ask the question about Corinth. 00:18:00.68\00:18:04.05 For some reason, you know, people say, "Okay, we accept 00:18:04.45\00:18:08.02 the idea that in Acts 2 the gift was languages. 00:18:08.05\00:18:11.45 And we accept that in Acts 10 the gift was languages. 00:18:11.55\00:18:14.89 And we accept that in Acts 19 it was languages. 00:18:15.19\00:18:18.56 But in 1 Corinthians 14 that was a different kind of language. 00:18:18.79\00:18:24.30 That was an angelic language that is spoken 00:18:24.33\00:18:26.37 nowhere on planet earth." 00:18:26.40\00:18:27.94 What they're saying is that the gift in 1 Corinthians 14 00:18:28.07\00:18:31.57 is different than the gift that God gave 00:18:31.61\00:18:35.08 in all of these other places. 00:18:35.11\00:18:36.81 Now there are three main views. 00:18:36.85\00:18:38.45 Let me summarize those three main views 00:18:38.48\00:18:40.62 about what was happening in the church of Corinth. 00:18:40.85\00:18:43.79 View number one is the idea that the gift of tongues 00:18:44.09\00:18:48.36 in Corinth was a genuine gift that was unrelated 00:18:48.39\00:18:54.36 to the gift that God gave in Acts 2. 00:18:54.40\00:18:56.63 In other words, the idea is that the Corinthians were speaking 00:18:57.30\00:19:01.60 an angelic language. 00:19:01.64\00:19:03.37 Not a language of the nations like happened in Acts 2. 00:19:04.01\00:19:07.08 In other words, it was a genuine gift, 00:19:07.11\00:19:08.88 but it was the gift of speaking in an angelic language, 00:19:09.31\00:19:11.85 not a language that was spoken somewhere on planet earth. 00:19:11.88\00:19:14.68 There's a second view. 00:19:15.18\00:19:16.55 And that is, that the Corinthians were speaking 00:19:16.85\00:19:19.55 in a language that is spoken nowhere on planet earth, 00:19:19.75\00:19:23.12 but that this was a counterfeit. 00:19:23.39\00:19:25.66 In other words, they were speaking gibberish, 00:19:26.36\00:19:28.50 but this was not a true gift of the Holy Spirit. 00:19:28.86\00:19:31.37 This was actually a counterfeit. 00:19:31.47\00:19:34.27 And number three, there was the view that the gift 00:19:34.80\00:19:38.27 that was given in Corinth is the identical gift 00:19:38.31\00:19:42.04 that was given in the book of Acts. 00:19:42.08\00:19:44.21 In other words, it's not a different gift. 00:19:44.41\00:19:46.61 It is the same. 00:19:46.65\00:19:47.98 It's languages that are spoken somewhere on planet earth. 00:19:48.02\00:19:51.29 Are you understanding the three points of view? 00:19:51.32\00:19:53.29 First point of view is that it was a genuine gift 00:19:53.86\00:19:57.23 that the Corinthians had, but it wasn't the same gift as Acts 2. 00:19:57.33\00:20:01.26 It wasn't languages, it was an angelic language. 00:20:01.30\00:20:03.77 But it was a true gift. 00:20:03.80\00:20:05.13 The second view is that they were speaking gibberish, 00:20:05.50\00:20:08.34 a language that is spoken nowhere on planet earth, 00:20:08.37\00:20:10.87 but it was a counterfeit. 00:20:11.07\00:20:14.04 It was a false gift. 00:20:14.08\00:20:15.74 And the third view is that the gift in Corinth was the same 00:20:15.94\00:20:20.52 as in Acts 2. 00:20:20.55\00:20:21.88 It was the ability to speak real languages that are spoken 00:20:21.92\00:20:25.99 somewhere on planet earth. 00:20:26.02\00:20:28.42 Now was the gift of Acts 2 a different gift 00:20:28.89\00:20:32.89 than 1 Corinthians 14? 00:20:32.93\00:20:34.96 Was, in other words, the gift in Acts 2 the ability to speak 00:20:35.66\00:20:39.40 languages that are spoken somewhere in the world, 00:20:39.43\00:20:41.80 whereas 1 Corinthians 14 the gift is the gift to speak 00:20:42.00\00:20:45.61 some angelic tongue that is spoken nowhere on planet earth? 00:20:45.64\00:20:49.51 That's the question that we need to ask. 00:20:50.05\00:20:51.65 Now let me give you some very important details. 00:20:51.68\00:20:54.32 The word, "tongues," in 1 Corinthians 14, 00:20:54.88\00:20:58.05 which is the word, "glóssa," is identical to the word 00:20:58.45\00:21:02.39 that is used in all of the passages 00:21:02.42\00:21:04.93 that we've already studied. 00:21:04.96\00:21:06.29 It's identical to the word that is used in Mark 16:17 00:21:06.70\00:21:10.30 where Jesus said that they will speak in new tongues. 00:21:10.33\00:21:12.53 It is identical to the word that is used in 00:21:12.93\00:21:15.34 Acts 2, Acts 10, and Acts 19. 00:21:15.37\00:21:18.67 In other words, in 1 Corinthians a different word is not used. 00:21:19.37\00:21:21.74 It's the same word for, "tongues." 00:21:21.78\00:21:23.55 Secondly, the expression, "speaking in tongues," 00:21:24.05\00:21:27.95 appears in only five places in the New Testament. 00:21:28.58\00:21:31.99 The expression, "speaking in tongues." 00:21:32.02\00:21:34.02 It is used in Mark 16:17, 00:21:34.36\00:21:37.23 it is used in Acts 2, Acts 10, Acts 19, 00:21:37.53\00:21:41.96 and 1 Corinthians 12 through 14. 00:21:42.00\00:21:44.37 Would that lead you to believe that the gift in 00:21:44.40\00:21:46.47 1 Corinthians 12 through 14 is the same gift that you find 00:21:46.50\00:21:50.44 in Mark 16:17, Acts 2, Acts 10, and Acts 19 00:21:50.47\00:21:54.84 if the same expression is used? 00:21:54.88\00:21:56.78 Absolutely. 00:21:57.11\00:21:58.45 Now additionally to this, if the apostle Paul 00:21:58.78\00:22:02.95 was speaking about a counterfeit gift there in the 00:22:02.98\00:22:07.32 church of Corinth, that they were speaking gibberish 00:22:07.36\00:22:10.16 and that this gibberish was actually a counterfeit gift 00:22:10.36\00:22:13.19 of the Holy Spirit, one wonders why the apostle Paul, 00:22:13.23\00:22:17.10 in 1 Corinthians 12 through 14, would refer to tongues 00:22:17.17\00:22:20.40 as a gift of the Holy Spirit. 00:22:20.44\00:22:22.30 And one would also wonder why the apostle Paul would say in 00:22:23.10\00:22:26.34 1 Corinthians 14 that all of us should desire this gift. 00:22:26.37\00:22:30.71 If it was a counterfeit, why would he say that 00:22:30.75\00:22:32.58 we should desire this gift? 00:22:32.61\00:22:34.02 Furthermore, the apostle Paul says that he spoke in tongues 00:22:34.32\00:22:37.92 more than everyone, he says in 1 Corinthians 14. 00:22:37.95\00:22:40.56 If it was a counterfeit gift, would he say, 00:22:40.66\00:22:43.19 "Oh, I speak in counterfeit gifts more than anyone." 00:22:43.22\00:22:45.96 Of course not. 00:22:45.99\00:22:47.33 And so these indications show that the gift that was given 00:22:47.36\00:22:51.23 in Corinth was the same gift that was given in Ephesus, 00:22:51.27\00:22:56.97 in Caesarea, in Jerusalem, and of which Jesus spoke 00:22:57.01\00:23:01.04 in Mark 16:17. 00:23:01.08\00:23:04.48 Now there's an additional reason why I believe that in 00:23:04.88\00:23:07.98 1 Corinthians 14, you're dealing with the same gift 00:23:08.02\00:23:10.59 that you find in the book of Acts. 00:23:10.62\00:23:12.12 And that is that there are only two verses in the Bible 00:23:13.15\00:23:16.49 that use a combination of three words. 00:23:16.79\00:23:19.69 Now in the Old Testament, in the Septuagint... 00:23:20.30\00:23:22.93 You know, that's the Greek translation 00:23:22.96\00:23:24.40 of the Old Testament. 00:23:24.43\00:23:25.77 ...you find in Genesis 11:7 these three words... 00:23:26.07\00:23:30.21 And I want to read Genesis 11:7 as it appears in the Septuagint, 00:23:30.81\00:23:35.71 as it appears in the Greek translation 00:23:35.74\00:23:37.45 of the Old Testament. 00:23:37.48\00:23:38.81 And the reason I do this is because Corinthians 00:23:38.85\00:23:42.25 is written in Greek. 00:23:42.28\00:23:43.65 So you have to read the Old Testament text in Greek 00:23:43.89\00:23:46.79 in order to compare it with the New Testament text in Greek. 00:23:46.82\00:23:50.23 Are you following me or not? 00:23:50.26\00:23:51.59 And so it says in Genesis 11:7... 00:23:51.73\00:23:55.36 "...language..." 00:24:00.24\00:24:01.57 It's the word, "glóssa," where we get the word, 00:24:01.60\00:24:03.41 "glossolalia," from. 00:24:03.44\00:24:04.84 "...that they may not understand..." 00:24:05.27\00:24:07.68 That's the second word. 00:24:07.78\00:24:09.11 The word, "akouó," in Greek. 00:24:09.14\00:24:11.45 "...one another's speech..." 00:24:11.48\00:24:13.92 Which is the word, "phóné." 00:24:13.95\00:24:15.68 So in Genesis 11:7, it speaks about confusing the language, 00:24:15.95\00:24:22.92 "glóssa," that they may not understand, "akouó," 00:24:22.96\00:24:26.46 one another's speech, "phóné." 00:24:26.66\00:24:29.06 As I mentioned, there's only one other verse in the Bible 00:24:29.46\00:24:32.20 that uses the combination of those three words. 00:24:32.23\00:24:34.47 And it's found in 1 Corinthians 14:2, 00:24:34.70\00:24:38.37 which we will study in detail, Lord willing, 00:24:38.41\00:24:41.38 in our first session tomorrow. 00:24:41.58\00:24:43.14 It says there in 1 Corinthians 14:2, 00:24:43.41\00:24:46.18 here the apostle Paul is speaking, 00:24:46.21\00:24:47.82 "For he who speaks..." 00:24:47.92\00:24:49.75 That's the word, "phóné," in Greek. 00:24:49.85\00:24:52.15 "...in a tongue..." That's the word, "glóssa." 00:24:54.59\00:24:57.83 "...for no one understands..." That's the word, "akouó." 00:25:00.23\00:25:03.60 So if this combination of words in Genesis 11:7 00:25:08.80\00:25:13.07 refers to languages of the world, and in 1 Corinthians 14:2 00:25:13.11\00:25:18.01 the same three words are used in the same verse, 00:25:18.05\00:25:21.08 one would have to conclude that it's the same gift. 00:25:21.18\00:25:23.82 Are you with me or not? 00:25:23.85\00:25:25.25 Now, did the Babel builders speak real languages? 00:25:25.55\00:25:29.76 Of course they spoke real languages. 00:25:30.23\00:25:31.93 Did they know those languages before? 00:25:32.09\00:25:34.30 The ones who spoke them, did they know those 00:25:35.93\00:25:37.63 languages before? 00:25:37.67\00:25:39.00 No. 00:25:39.17\00:25:40.50 Instantaneously, they were given the ability to speak 00:25:40.54\00:25:44.21 a different language than they knew before, right? 00:25:44.24\00:25:47.04 They all spoke the same language before. 00:25:47.14\00:25:49.64 And so when they got the gift of tongues, you know, 00:25:49.71\00:25:52.01 one was speaking French, another was speaking English, 00:25:52.05\00:25:54.18 another was speaking Spanish, 00:25:54.22\00:25:55.55 another Japanese, another Korean. 00:25:55.58\00:25:57.12 They were speaking all the languages of the world, 00:25:57.22\00:25:59.35 but they were real languages. 00:25:59.45\00:26:01.26 And one group could not understand the other group 00:26:01.29\00:26:04.19 because they spoke in different languages. 00:26:04.39\00:26:06.53 I believe that what was happening in Corinth 00:26:07.06\00:26:09.46 is that the Corinthians were returning 00:26:09.66\00:26:11.97 to what happened at Babel. 00:26:12.07\00:26:13.54 They were speaking real languages, but they were 00:26:13.87\00:26:16.64 speaking these languages in church where nobody understood 00:26:16.67\00:26:19.77 the language that they were speaking. 00:26:19.81\00:26:21.58 Are you understanding what I'm saying? 00:26:21.68\00:26:23.28 In other words, you go to a church where the language 00:26:23.58\00:26:26.85 is Latin, and here they're rattling off Japanese. 00:26:26.88\00:26:30.05 Well you know, people cannot understand that language. 00:26:30.49\00:26:34.49 Right? 00:26:34.52\00:26:35.86 They can't understand it, but is it a language 00:26:35.89\00:26:37.79 that is spoken somewhere in the world? 00:26:37.83\00:26:39.79 Of course it's a language that's spoken somewhere in the world. 00:26:39.83\00:26:42.46 So what was happening in Corinth is that everyone in the church 00:26:42.50\00:26:46.43 was speaking in the tongue that God had given them. 00:26:46.47\00:26:49.00 And incidentally, when God gave the gift of tongues, 00:26:49.04\00:26:51.74 it remained with people for life. 00:26:51.77\00:26:53.91 The gift of tongues was not that God gave the apostles 00:26:54.64\00:26:57.71 the ability to speak in a language, and then after 00:26:57.75\00:27:00.52 they shared the gospel they forgot the language. No. 00:27:00.55\00:27:02.88 It was given to them for life. 00:27:02.92\00:27:04.92 Which is very important to realize because if it was 00:27:06.49\00:27:09.12 given for life, that means that when the Corinthians 00:27:09.16\00:27:11.09 received the gift, you know, here they go to church 00:27:11.13\00:27:14.50 and you have who knows how many, fifty of them, 00:27:14.80\00:27:18.13 rattling off a tongue that nobody can understand 00:27:18.17\00:27:21.17 even though they're languages. 00:27:21.20\00:27:22.80 Nobody can understand because the people 00:27:22.90\00:27:24.57 don't speak those languages. 00:27:24.61\00:27:25.94 Are you with me or not? 00:27:25.97\00:27:27.31 In other words, what they were doing was that they were 00:27:27.34\00:27:29.48 abusing the gift of tongues that God had given. 00:27:29.51\00:27:32.78 And the gift of tongues in Corinth was not like the gift 00:27:32.88\00:27:37.15 that Kenneth Copeland used recently in that meeting 00:27:37.19\00:27:40.72 with all the Pentecostal leaders where Tony Palmer 00:27:40.76\00:27:44.46 was there, you know, sharing a message from the pope. 00:27:44.49\00:27:47.06 You know, nobody could understand what 00:27:47.23\00:27:49.20 Kenneth Copeland was saying. 00:27:49.23\00:27:50.57 I don't think even God was understanding 00:27:51.27\00:27:52.90 what he was saying. 00:27:52.93\00:27:54.27 You know, there was no interpreter. 00:27:54.77\00:27:56.64 And even if there was an interpreter, how do you know 00:27:57.31\00:27:59.91 that the interpreter was really interpreting what 00:27:59.94\00:28:02.18 Kenneth Copeland was saying and not inventing some message? 00:28:02.21\00:28:05.11 Are you following me or not? 00:28:05.28\00:28:06.61 That is not the gift of tongues. 00:28:07.02\00:28:08.82 It's not speaking a language that is spoken nowhere 00:28:09.08\00:28:11.52 on planet earth that no one can understand. 00:28:11.55\00:28:13.66 It is a language, but the Corinthians were speaking 00:28:13.86\00:28:16.93 in different tongues that people could not understand 00:28:16.96\00:28:19.66 just to show off the gift that they had received. 00:28:19.69\00:28:23.23 Now let me share with you some of the 00:28:23.47\00:28:25.00 characteristics of Corinth. 00:28:25.03\00:28:27.17 Corinth became a Roman colony in the year 44 BC. 00:28:28.04\00:28:33.17 It was a major junction between the eastern 00:28:33.78\00:28:37.55 and the western Mediterranean. 00:28:37.58\00:28:39.55 In other words, people from the eastern and western 00:28:39.58\00:28:41.58 Mediterranean all passed through the city of Corinth. 00:28:41.62\00:28:45.05 It was also a bridge of trade between northern 00:28:45.32\00:28:48.89 and southern Greece. 00:28:48.92\00:28:50.43 It had a population of approximately 200,000, 00:28:50.93\00:28:54.80 which was composed of Romans, Greeks, Jews, 00:28:55.20\00:28:59.07 and people from many other nations. 00:28:59.10\00:29:01.67 We know that the apostle Paul spent a year and a half 00:29:02.07\00:29:04.91 in Corinth during his second missionary journey. 00:29:04.94\00:29:07.98 Corinth was one of the most immoral cities of antiquity. 00:29:08.81\00:29:12.88 A terribly immoral city in the continent of Europe. 00:29:13.15\00:29:17.45 It was a metropolitan and cosmopolitan center. 00:29:17.62\00:29:21.46 And the gift of tongues was necessary in order to reach 00:29:21.76\00:29:25.46 all of the language groups that passed through that city. 00:29:25.49\00:29:29.20 Are you understanding the reason for the 00:29:29.73\00:29:31.37 gift of tongues in Corinth? 00:29:31.40\00:29:32.80 It was a place where there were so many nations 00:29:33.20\00:29:36.37 and so many languages that it was necessary to give the 00:29:36.74\00:29:39.67 church members the ability to speak those languages 00:29:39.71\00:29:42.64 so that they could share the gospel. 00:29:42.74\00:29:45.08 Now Corinth was a messy church. 00:29:45.38\00:29:48.38 Actually, there were several churches in Corinth. 00:29:48.42\00:29:50.59 Some of the problems that the church in Corinth had 00:29:51.19\00:29:53.96 were factions or clique in the church. 00:29:54.06\00:29:56.99 There were jealousies and quarreling, 00:29:57.33\00:29:59.39 as you read the books. 00:29:59.49\00:30:00.83 There was one case of incest that was being committed 00:30:00.96\00:30:04.40 by one of the church members. 00:30:04.43\00:30:05.90 Some of them were participating in prostitution. 00:30:06.13\00:30:09.10 They were suing one another in court. 00:30:09.30\00:30:11.77 They were criticizing people who ate meat 00:30:12.21\00:30:15.68 that had been offered to idols. 00:30:15.71\00:30:17.58 Some of them were celebrating orgies. 00:30:17.88\00:30:20.55 They were abusing the Lord's Supper. 00:30:20.75\00:30:22.88 Some of them were denying that Jesus resurrected. 00:30:23.45\00:30:26.39 They were saying that the resurrection was spiritual. 00:30:26.42\00:30:28.99 And they were also misusing and abusing the gift of tongues 00:30:29.29\00:30:34.10 in the church of Corinth. 00:30:34.46\00:30:36.13 Now let's ask some questions about 00:30:36.63\00:30:39.30 1 Corinthians 12 through 14. 00:30:39.33\00:30:41.30 We're not only going to study chapter 14, 00:30:41.47\00:30:43.37 we're going to take a look at chapter 12 and 13 because 00:30:43.41\00:30:45.71 tongues are also mentioned in those chapters. 00:30:45.74\00:30:48.54 And let's just ask a series of questions about 00:30:48.84\00:30:52.45 1 Corinthians 12, 13, and 14. 00:30:52.48\00:30:54.88 Here are the questions. 00:30:54.92\00:30:56.25 Number one, must everyone speak in tongues? 00:30:56.38\00:31:00.52 Number two, is the gift of tongues the most important gift? 00:31:01.79\00:31:07.23 Number three, is the gift of tongues for personal edification 00:31:08.00\00:31:13.84 or a sign of spirituality? 00:31:13.87\00:31:16.24 Number four, is the gift of tongues the ability to speak 00:31:17.14\00:31:21.48 the languages of the nations of the world 00:31:21.51\00:31:23.95 or is it an unknown tongue that is not spoken anywhere 00:31:24.18\00:31:28.55 in the world? 00:31:28.58\00:31:29.92 And finally, what conditions must exist in order 00:31:30.05\00:31:34.62 to receive the gift of tongues? 00:31:34.66\00:31:37.06 Those are the questions that we're going to try to answer 00:31:37.09\00:31:39.43 as we take a look at 1 Corinthians 12 through 14. 00:31:39.46\00:31:43.47 Now I want to mention that there are four lists 00:31:44.00\00:31:47.24 of spiritual gifts in the writings of the apostle Paul. 00:31:47.44\00:31:50.41 Four lists. 00:31:50.44\00:31:51.77 There is one gift only that is mentioned in all four lists. 00:31:52.54\00:31:56.34 That's the gift of prophecy. 00:31:56.38\00:31:58.01 Tongues are only mentioned in two of the four lists. 00:31:58.71\00:32:02.22 Now I want us to take a look at these four lists 00:32:02.48\00:32:05.75 to see if tongues is the most important, 00:32:05.79\00:32:07.96 if everybody needs to speak in tongues, etc, 00:32:07.99\00:32:10.23 to see if we can find answers to our questions. 00:32:10.26\00:32:12.83 1 Corinthians 12:8-11 has the first list of spiritual gifts. 00:32:12.93\00:32:18.17 Here, the apostle Paul says... 00:32:18.47\00:32:20.24 And we're going to emphasize certain points. 00:32:20.27\00:32:23.04 "But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one 00:32:23.07\00:32:26.81 for their personal edification..." 00:32:27.44\00:32:29.11 No, no, no, no. That's not what it says. 00:32:29.94\00:32:31.68 For what? 00:32:31.71\00:32:33.05 "...for the profit of all." 00:32:33.08\00:32:34.42 Let me ask you, if I was preaching here in Papiamento, 00:32:34.45\00:32:38.62 which is a dialect from the Netherlands Antilles, 00:32:38.92\00:32:42.16 would that be for the profit of all? 00:32:42.26\00:32:44.13 Now if I knew Papiamento, would that benefit me? 00:32:44.69\00:32:47.36 Of course it would benefit me because I would understand 00:32:47.80\00:32:49.90 perfectly what I'm saying. 00:32:49.93\00:32:51.27 But it wouldn't benefit you at all. 00:32:51.63\00:32:53.30 It certainly would not profit you. 00:32:53.34\00:32:55.24 So the apostle Paul is saying, "The manifestation of the Spirit 00:32:55.34\00:32:58.71 is given to each one for the profit of all." 00:32:58.74\00:33:01.24 Not for your profit, not for your self-edification, 00:33:01.28\00:33:03.75 not for a spiritual high for you. 00:33:03.95\00:33:06.05 But for the profit of all. 00:33:06.08\00:33:07.42 Now notice... 00:33:07.72\00:33:09.05 Now let's notice some details about this passage. 00:33:43.28\00:33:45.85 Where are tongues mentioned in this list? 00:33:46.79\00:33:49.56 They are mentioned last. 00:33:50.23\00:33:52.43 The gift of tongues and the interpretation of tongues 00:33:53.06\00:33:56.00 are last on the list. 00:33:56.03\00:33:58.57 Furthermore, we noticed that none of these gifts are for 00:33:59.17\00:34:02.97 personal self-edification or to experience 00:34:03.00\00:34:05.77 a personal spiritual high. 00:34:05.81\00:34:07.28 All of them, as we noticed, are for the benefit 00:34:07.48\00:34:10.88 of the whole church. 00:34:10.91\00:34:12.25 And verse 11 explains that the Holy Spirit decides 00:34:12.75\00:34:16.99 who gets which gift. 00:34:17.02\00:34:19.75 We are not to seek the gifts. 00:34:19.85\00:34:22.19 The Holy Spirit gives the gifts that He knows that the 00:34:22.22\00:34:24.83 church needs at any given moment of time 00:34:24.86\00:34:28.66 as He sees necessary. 00:34:28.70\00:34:30.93 And the reason why I mention this is because there are many 00:34:31.30\00:34:34.00 charismatics who actually feel guilty because they don't 00:34:34.04\00:34:37.07 speak in tongues, and they do their utmost 00:34:37.11\00:34:39.91 to receive the gift of tongues and to speak in tongues. 00:34:39.94\00:34:42.71 And they feel guilty, they feel like they're not even saved, 00:34:42.74\00:34:45.81 if they can't speak in tongues. 00:34:45.85\00:34:47.18 Because they're told that everybody has to have 00:34:47.28\00:34:49.85 the gift of tongues. 00:34:49.88\00:34:51.22 Now let's go to list number two. 00:34:51.49\00:34:53.32 It's found in 1 Corinthians 12:28-31. 00:34:53.82\00:34:58.73 Here, the apostle Paul says, "And God has appointed..." 00:34:59.43\00:35:02.86 Who has appointed? 00:35:02.90\00:35:04.23 So am I suppose to say, "Lord, give me tongues," 00:35:04.50\00:35:07.17 and the Lord gives me tongues? No. 00:35:07.47\00:35:08.84 The Lord gives the gift of tongues when He sees 00:35:08.97\00:35:11.51 that it's necessary, not simply because I want it. 00:35:11.54\00:35:14.38 Now is there a hierarchy of gifts here? 00:35:18.48\00:35:20.82 Yes there is. 00:35:20.85\00:35:22.18 Where does he put tongues? 00:35:37.63\00:35:39.07 Last on the list. 00:35:39.63\00:35:41.47 And then verse 29 he asks the question, 00:35:41.94\00:35:44.71 "Are all apostles?" 00:35:44.91\00:35:46.91 What would the answer be to that? 00:35:47.31\00:35:48.64 What answer is the apostle Paul looking for? 00:35:48.68\00:35:50.55 No. 00:35:50.88\00:35:52.21 "Are all prophets?" No. 00:35:52.88\00:35:55.42 "Do all speak with tongues?" 00:36:04.83\00:36:06.53 What would the answer be? 00:36:06.56\00:36:07.90 No. 00:36:07.93\00:36:09.26 "Do all interpret tongues?" Of course not. 00:36:09.30\00:36:12.43 Do you notice, once again, that he puts the gift of tongues 00:36:12.47\00:36:16.10 last on the list, and the interpretation of tongues 00:36:16.14\00:36:19.04 last on the list? 00:36:19.14\00:36:20.48 And he's establishing a hierarchy of gifts, 00:36:20.51\00:36:22.98 because he says, first, second, third, and then after that. 00:36:23.01\00:36:26.55 So he's prioritizing the gifts by their importance. 00:36:26.78\00:36:30.29 And then he says in verse 31... 00:36:30.82\00:36:32.69 And of course, the more excellent way 00:36:39.93\00:36:41.46 is found in chapter 13, which is the way of love. 00:36:41.50\00:36:45.43 Love is the greatest gift of the Holy Spirit. 00:36:45.47\00:36:47.97 So summarizing, there is a hierarchy of gifts 00:36:48.00\00:36:51.87 denoted by the words, first, second, third, and after that. 00:36:52.17\00:36:57.05 Second, last on the list is the gift of tongues. 00:36:57.48\00:37:02.08 All did not receive the gift of tongues, 00:37:02.48\00:37:05.55 according to the apostle Paul. 00:37:05.59\00:37:07.29 Third, the entire argument of 1 Corinthians 12, 00:37:08.12\00:37:12.16 if you read the whole chapter, is that there is one body 00:37:12.19\00:37:15.76 with many members, and each member has a different gift 00:37:15.80\00:37:20.34 for the benefit of the body. 00:37:20.44\00:37:21.77 What good is it for everybody to have the same gift? 00:37:22.10\00:37:24.51 That's like your whole body being a head. 00:37:24.97\00:37:28.14 Or your whole body being a foot. 00:37:28.54\00:37:30.25 Or your whole body being an arm. 00:37:30.65\00:37:32.38 There are different gifts given to different individuals 00:37:32.85\00:37:35.98 for the benefit of the entire body. 00:37:36.02\00:37:37.89 The ideal of God is not that everybody have the same gift, 00:37:37.99\00:37:42.02 the gift of tongues. 00:37:42.06\00:37:43.76 Now the apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians 13:8 00:37:44.66\00:37:48.26 that tongues will cease. 00:37:48.36\00:37:49.96 So it's not one of the most important gifts. 00:37:50.23\00:37:52.47 Now let's go to list number three. 00:38:03.21\00:38:05.78 It's not found in 1 Corinthians. 00:38:06.21\00:38:07.68 It's found in Ephesians 4:11-13. 00:38:07.72\00:38:10.92 Here, the apostle Paul says, "And He Himself gave..." 00:38:11.55\00:38:16.16 Who gave? 00:38:16.19\00:38:17.53 Once again, it's the Lord, isn't it? 00:38:17.56\00:38:18.89 And I continue reading. 00:38:29.37\00:38:30.71 "So that they can show how spiritual they are, 00:38:30.74\00:38:33.98 and they can experience self-edification." 00:38:34.01\00:38:37.31 No, that's not what it says. 00:38:38.05\00:38:39.51 What is the purpose of these gifts? 00:38:39.55\00:38:42.05 Not yourself. 00:38:49.96\00:38:51.29 For the edifying of the body of Christ. 00:38:51.33\00:38:52.99 Tongues is not even mentioned on this list. 00:39:02.77\00:39:05.81 And the gift is given for the good of the body. 00:39:06.68\00:39:09.14 It is for equipping the saints for ministry 00:39:09.24\00:39:11.78 and not merely for personal edification. 00:39:11.81\00:39:15.92 Now let's go to list number four. 00:39:16.55\00:39:18.42 It's found in Romans 12:4-8. 00:39:18.95\00:39:22.96 Once again, tongues is not mentioned in the list. 00:39:22.99\00:39:26.80 It says there in Romans 12:4... 00:39:27.10\00:39:29.63 So if everybody spoke in tongues, would they have 00:39:38.67\00:39:40.74 the same function? 00:39:40.78\00:39:42.11 Of course they would. 00:39:42.14\00:39:43.48 So he says... 00:39:43.51\00:39:44.85 "Having then gifts..." What? 00:39:59.39\00:40:01.46 Ah, differing. 00:40:02.36\00:40:03.70 So does everybody have the same gift? 00:40:03.73\00:40:05.53 No, it says, "Having then gifts differing 00:40:05.57\00:40:08.74 according to the grace that is given to us..." 00:40:08.77\00:40:11.41 Does everybody have the same gift? 00:40:31.93\00:40:33.60 No. 00:40:33.83\00:40:35.16 There are many gifts in the church. 00:40:35.33\00:40:37.33 And the Holy Spirit gives out these gifts according to the 00:40:37.80\00:40:41.17 need of the body; the needs of the church. 00:40:41.20\00:40:44.54 I want to underline, once again, a very important fact. 00:40:44.97\00:40:49.01 And that is that the word, "tongues," and the expression, 00:40:49.38\00:40:53.82 "speaking in tongues," is identical in Mark 16:17, 00:40:53.85\00:41:00.46 in all of the passages in the book of Acts, and in 00:41:00.59\00:41:03.56 1 Corinthians 12 through 14. 00:41:03.59\00:41:05.93 This would seem to clearly indicate that the gift in 00:41:06.26\00:41:09.56 1 Corinthians 12 through 14 is the same gift 00:41:09.60\00:41:13.03 that we find in Mark 16:17, as well as in all of the passages 00:41:13.07\00:41:18.01 that we find in the book of Acts. 00:41:18.04\00:41:20.64 Somebody might say though, "Pastor Bohr, have you ever 00:41:21.58\00:41:25.21 read 1 Corinthians 13:1-2 where it speaks about 00:41:25.25\00:41:28.98 the language of angels, tongues of angels?" 00:41:29.02\00:41:32.75 Well, let's read 1 Corinthians 13:1-2. 00:41:33.05\00:41:36.59 Because many charismatics today say, "Oh no, the apostle Paul 00:41:36.62\00:41:40.40 says that we're suppose to speak in the language 00:41:40.43\00:41:42.83 or the tongues of angels. 00:41:42.86\00:41:44.60 That's the language that's spoken nowhere on planet earth. 00:41:44.63\00:41:47.34 It's a heavenly language," is what they say. 00:41:47.37\00:41:50.31 Well, let's take a look at this. 00:41:50.74\00:41:52.44 1 Corinthians 13:1-2 00:41:52.47\00:41:54.44 Here, the apostle Paul says... 00:41:54.94\00:41:56.64 There's one word which is a very important word 00:42:22.60\00:42:25.01 in these two verses. 00:42:25.04\00:42:26.64 It's the word, "though." 00:42:27.08\00:42:29.24 What does the word, "though," indicate? 00:42:29.71\00:42:32.05 It is a conditional statement. 00:42:32.68\00:42:34.78 The apostle Paul is not saying that the Corinthians 00:42:35.62\00:42:38.35 were speaking in the language of angels. 00:42:38.45\00:42:40.69 He's saying, "If I could speak the language 00:42:40.72\00:42:44.43 of men and angels..." 00:42:44.46\00:42:45.79 "If I could have the gift of prophecy..." 00:42:46.06\00:42:48.80 "If I could know all mystery and all knowledge..." 00:42:49.00\00:42:51.50 Let me ask you, is it really possible for us to know 00:42:51.53\00:42:53.57 all mysteries and all knowledge? 00:42:53.60\00:42:55.20 No, it's a hypothetical statement. 00:42:55.40\00:42:57.74 The apostle Paul is not saying that the Corinthians 00:42:57.97\00:43:00.18 spoke an angelic language. 00:43:00.21\00:43:01.78 He's saying, "If I could do that, if I had all knowledge, 00:43:01.94\00:43:06.28 and if I spoke in the language that the angels speak in, 00:43:06.31\00:43:10.49 but I don't have love, it would be like nothing." 00:43:10.59\00:43:14.12 He's not saying that we're suppose to speak 00:43:14.22\00:43:16.36 in the language of angels. 00:43:16.39\00:43:17.73 He's saying, if we could. 00:43:17.76\00:43:19.49 So it's a hypothetical statement. 00:43:20.10\00:43:22.06 It's not a statement of reality. 00:43:22.10\00:43:24.93 But let's dwell for a few moments about the idea 00:43:25.37\00:43:29.10 concerning the language of angels. 00:43:29.30\00:43:32.67 Do we ever find in Scripture an angel speaking 00:43:33.58\00:43:36.98 in an unknown tongue? 00:43:37.01\00:43:38.48 Can you mention one example in the Bible where an angel 00:43:39.71\00:43:43.42 came and spoke in a language that human beings 00:43:43.45\00:43:45.75 could not understand? 00:43:45.79\00:43:47.12 Did they? 00:43:48.42\00:43:49.76 I don't know of any. 00:43:49.79\00:43:51.13 Let me ask you, did the angels sing in a strange tongue 00:43:51.23\00:43:54.00 when Jesus was born? 00:43:54.10\00:43:55.43 Did they sing, "Glory to God in the highest," 00:43:56.36\00:43:58.23 in a tongue that nobody could understand, 00:43:58.27\00:43:59.97 in their own angelic language? 00:44:00.17\00:44:01.70 Absolutely not. 00:44:01.74\00:44:03.07 How about when the announcement was made to Zacharias about 00:44:03.27\00:44:06.61 the birth of John the Baptist? 00:44:06.64\00:44:08.14 Did the angel speak to him in an unknown tongue 00:44:08.34\00:44:11.61 that Zacharias could not understand? 00:44:11.65\00:44:13.38 Of course not. 00:44:13.72\00:44:15.05 He spoke to him in his own language. 00:44:15.08\00:44:16.72 When the angel appeared to Gabriel to explain 00:44:17.05\00:44:19.79 the 2300 day prophecy, did Gabriel speak in gibberish 00:44:19.82\00:44:24.33 that Daniel could not understand? 00:44:24.36\00:44:26.09 No, he spoke in the language of Daniel. 00:44:26.19\00:44:30.37 Now Revelation 5:11-13 speaks about a praise service 00:44:31.17\00:44:37.34 in heaven, and it's given in the language of the prophet. 00:44:37.37\00:44:41.34 Let me ask you, why would God speak to us in a language 00:44:42.04\00:44:44.98 that we can't understand? 00:44:45.01\00:44:46.48 It would be impractical for someone to speak in a language 00:44:46.92\00:44:51.25 that no one can understand when they could speak 00:44:51.29\00:44:54.69 to people in a language that they can understand. 00:44:54.79\00:44:57.86 It's senseless. 00:44:58.06\00:44:59.39 Incidentally, the angels have the gift of tongues. 00:44:59.56\00:45:02.86 Because they spoke to Peter in Greek, 00:45:04.07\00:45:06.30 they spoke to Daniel in Hebrew, 00:45:06.74\00:45:08.84 and they spoke to Ellen G. White in English. 00:45:08.87\00:45:10.87 And so the angels have the gift of tongues. 00:45:11.77\00:45:13.84 Don't they? 00:45:13.88\00:45:15.21 Because they have the capacity of speaking human languages. 00:45:15.24\00:45:18.08 Now, I'm sure that the angels have their own language. 00:45:18.18\00:45:23.39 Would you believe that the angels have their own language? 00:45:23.42\00:45:25.75 I believe that they do. 00:45:25.95\00:45:27.29 But what use would it be for the angels to speak to us 00:45:27.32\00:45:29.89 in their language? 00:45:29.92\00:45:31.26 We wouldn't be able to understand 00:45:31.29\00:45:32.63 anything they're saying. 00:45:32.66\00:45:34.00 It is undoubtedly true that the angel's speak a different 00:45:34.33\00:45:37.80 language than we do. 00:45:37.83\00:45:39.30 But in the course of time, listen carefully, 00:45:39.93\00:45:42.27 in the course of time, everything on earth 00:45:42.30\00:45:44.47 has degenerated. 00:45:44.51\00:45:45.84 Languages have degenerated. 00:45:46.07\00:45:48.54 In fact, Ellen White makes several statements 00:45:48.64\00:45:50.48 where she says that God condescends to speak 00:45:50.51\00:45:54.05 in our language, because if He spoke in His language 00:45:54.08\00:45:56.85 we wouldn't be able to understand what He's saying. 00:45:56.89\00:45:59.49 Now notice these statements. 00:46:00.72\00:46:02.06 These are remarkable statements from Ellen White. 00:46:02.09\00:46:04.36 The Faith I Live By, page 10. 00:46:04.69\00:46:08.13 She says, "The Lord speaks to human beings 00:46:09.10\00:46:11.40 in imperfect speech..." 00:46:11.43\00:46:12.77 Do you think God has a perfect language? 00:46:12.80\00:46:14.54 Do you think the angels speak a perfect language? 00:46:15.20\00:46:17.67 Of course they do. 00:46:17.87\00:46:19.21 Would we be able to understand God and the angels 00:46:19.24\00:46:21.61 if they spoke to us in the language they speak? 00:46:21.64\00:46:23.65 No. So would it be practical for the angels to speak 00:46:23.91\00:46:26.72 in their language that we can't understand? 00:46:26.75\00:46:28.75 Totally impractical. 00:46:28.98\00:46:30.32 Notice... 00:46:30.42\00:46:31.75 Now notice how God condescends. 00:46:35.79\00:46:37.83 What practical purpose would there be if the Corinthians 00:46:55.24\00:46:57.68 were speaking in an angelic language that nobody could 00:46:57.71\00:46:59.91 understand when they could really speak in a language 00:46:59.95\00:47:03.45 that everybody could understand? 00:47:03.49\00:47:05.19 It's senseless. 00:47:05.22\00:47:06.55 God does not waste words. 00:47:06.59\00:47:08.79 God is a practical God. 00:47:09.52\00:47:12.09 Now notice this other statement. 00:47:12.29\00:47:14.23 God's Amazing Grace, page 198. 00:47:14.33\00:47:18.33 It says this... 00:47:18.63\00:47:19.97 So God speaks to us in imperfect speech. 00:47:58.67\00:48:01.44 Why does He talk to us in imperfect speech? 00:48:01.48\00:48:03.55 Because if He spoke in perfect speech, we would not 00:48:03.71\00:48:06.78 be able to understand what He's saying, 00:48:06.82\00:48:08.95 and it would be useless to us in our salvation. 00:48:08.98\00:48:13.39 In another statement that we find in, Selected Messages, 00:48:13.86\00:48:16.56 volume 1 and page 20, Ellen White says... 00:48:16.59\00:48:20.20 Would it be impractical for me to speak in a language 00:48:49.92\00:48:53.40 that even God cannot understand? 00:48:53.43\00:48:55.60 Of course, it would be terribly impractical 00:48:55.63\00:48:58.20 to speak in a language that I can't understand, 00:48:58.23\00:49:01.17 that God can't understand, 00:49:01.27\00:49:02.90 and that other human beings cannot understand. 00:49:02.94\00:49:04.91 The purpose, folks, of the gift of tongues was to communicate, 00:49:05.07\00:49:09.51 to communicate the gospel of God to the world. 00:49:09.68\00:49:12.31 It was not for self-edification, to show off your high degree of 00:49:12.35\00:49:16.58 spirituality, to edify yourself. 00:49:16.62\00:49:18.95 None of those reasons. 00:49:19.05\00:49:20.39 It was given for practical reasons so that the gospel 00:49:20.42\00:49:23.63 could be shared in the language that people can understand. 00:49:23.66\00:49:27.26 One final statement, Early Writings, page 19, 00:49:27.60\00:49:31.13 where Ellen White says... 00:49:31.33\00:49:33.10 That is, in heaven. 00:49:36.04\00:49:37.37 Does Canaan have a language? 00:49:42.01\00:49:43.58 Of course Canaan has a... Heaven has a language. 00:49:44.28\00:49:46.88 But would God speak to us in the language of heaven? 00:49:47.32\00:49:49.92 Of course not. 00:49:49.95\00:49:51.29 He speaks to us in the language of earth 00:49:51.32\00:49:53.25 because He wants to get the message across. 00:49:53.49\00:49:56.29 And so she says... 00:49:56.46\00:49:57.79 So God's language is pure and perfect, 00:50:06.37\00:50:10.31 which has not been corrupted in the course of time. 00:50:11.27\00:50:14.74 If God spoke to us in the language that the angels 00:50:15.24\00:50:19.48 use in heaven, we would not be able to understand. 00:50:19.51\00:50:22.95 So God condescends to speak our language 00:50:23.39\00:50:27.26 in order to fulfill the mission of Revelation 14:6 00:50:27.29\00:50:31.39 which takes the first angel's message, 00:50:31.49\00:50:33.80 it's actually the three angels' messages, 00:50:33.83\00:50:35.33 to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people. 00:50:35.36\00:50:38.77 But God has never commanded us to speak in a language 00:50:39.27\00:50:42.87 that is spoken nowhere on planet earth. 00:50:42.90\00:50:46.17 So let's answer the questions that we formulated 00:50:46.64\00:50:49.81 at the beginning of our study today. 00:50:50.31\00:50:53.01 Must everyone speak in tongues? 00:50:54.15\00:50:57.49 The answer, the obvious answer, is no. 00:50:58.82\00:51:01.69 The apostle Paul says, "Folks, not everyone has the same gift." 00:51:01.72\00:51:05.29 It's like a body, like I was mentioning, it's like the body 00:51:06.16\00:51:09.16 being just a heart. 00:51:09.20\00:51:10.67 The whole body being a heart. 00:51:10.70\00:51:12.13 Or the whole body being lungs. 00:51:12.17\00:51:14.00 Or the whole body being a foot. 00:51:14.10\00:51:15.60 You know, it takes many different members 00:51:16.07\00:51:18.34 to make the body function. 00:51:18.81\00:51:20.64 And so it takes many different spiritual gifts 00:51:20.74\00:51:23.45 for the church to function properly. 00:51:23.48\00:51:25.98 Now let's ask the second question. 00:51:27.32\00:51:29.08 Is the gift of tongues the most important gift? 00:51:29.12\00:51:32.25 No. 00:51:32.89\00:51:34.22 We noticed in the lists that the gift of tongues 00:51:34.26\00:51:36.73 is always mentioned what? 00:51:36.76\00:51:38.66 Is always mentioned last. 00:51:38.93\00:51:40.63 And the interpretation of tongues is also mentioned last. 00:51:40.66\00:51:44.57 And in two of the lists that we noticed, two of the four lists, 00:51:44.67\00:51:48.04 there was not even a mention of the gift of tongues, 00:51:48.24\00:51:51.24 not first or last. 00:51:51.34\00:51:53.27 And so the answer, is the gift of tongues the most 00:51:53.48\00:51:56.68 important gift, is no. 00:51:56.71\00:51:59.18 The next question is this: 00:52:00.25\00:52:02.02 Is the gift of tongues for personal edification 00:52:02.05\00:52:05.62 or a sign of spirituality? 00:52:05.65\00:52:07.89 No. The Corinthians thought so. 00:52:08.62\00:52:10.93 We're going to study tomorrow about 1 Corinthians 14. 00:52:10.96\00:52:13.40 We're going to study it verse by verse. 00:52:13.43\00:52:15.13 And we're going to see that the Corinthians, 00:52:15.23\00:52:16.97 they were speaking languages of the world. 00:52:17.00\00:52:19.10 Languages that were spoken somewhere in the world, 00:52:19.60\00:52:21.87 but they weren't spoken in the congregation 00:52:22.30\00:52:24.24 that they were speaking to. 00:52:24.27\00:52:25.61 And they were all speaking at the same time. 00:52:25.64\00:52:27.84 Can you imagine what it would be like if in this place 00:52:28.24\00:52:31.65 we had 200 people, and those 200 people 00:52:31.88\00:52:35.25 were each speaking in their own language? 00:52:35.35\00:52:38.12 It would be pandemonium. 00:52:38.15\00:52:39.89 It would be like at the tower of Babel revisited once again. 00:52:39.99\00:52:43.83 And so, folks, very clearly the answer to this question, 00:52:43.93\00:52:47.63 whether the gift of tongues is for personal edification 00:52:47.66\00:52:50.67 or a sign of spirituality, is no. 00:52:50.70\00:52:53.44 Why was the gift of tongues originally given? 00:52:53.47\00:52:56.27 It was given, clearly according to the different passages, 00:52:56.40\00:53:00.68 because the gospel needed to be shared in the languages 00:53:00.78\00:53:04.41 of the nations that were represented on the 00:53:04.45\00:53:06.61 day of Pentecost and the nations that would pass through these 00:53:06.65\00:53:09.85 cosmopolitan centers where the gospel needed to be preached. 00:53:09.88\00:53:14.92 Now here's another question. 00:53:15.22\00:53:16.96 Is the gift of tongues the ability to speak the languages 00:53:17.39\00:53:20.83 of the nations of the world or is it an unknown tongue 00:53:20.86\00:53:24.30 that is not spoken anywhere in the world? 00:53:24.33\00:53:27.10 The answer is that it is the ability to speak what? 00:53:27.20\00:53:31.24 To speak languages that are spoken somewhere in the world. 00:53:31.27\00:53:35.84 And I'll repeat what I said before. 00:53:35.88\00:53:38.08 I do not have the gift of tongues. 00:53:38.25\00:53:40.25 You know, I speak Spanish fluently. 00:53:41.38\00:53:43.39 And not only fluently, but I can use the idioms 00:53:43.85\00:53:46.82 and I have the idiosyncrasies. 00:53:46.86\00:53:49.22 You know, I am not only bi-lingual, 00:53:49.32\00:53:51.93 but I'm also bi-cultural. 00:53:51.96\00:53:53.46 And so people say, "Oh, you have the gift of tongues." 00:53:53.80\00:53:55.93 No I don't. 00:53:55.96\00:53:57.30 Because I learned Spanish when I was a kid. 00:53:57.63\00:54:00.27 You know, from the time I was four years old 00:54:00.50\00:54:02.20 I grew up with Spanish. 00:54:02.24\00:54:03.57 So you can't say that it was a miraculous endowment by God. 00:54:03.71\00:54:07.51 No, it was a learned phenomenon. 00:54:07.54\00:54:09.68 But the gift of tongues, folks, was not a learned phenomenon. 00:54:09.81\00:54:13.98 The gift of tongues was a supernatural, miraculous, 00:54:14.32\00:54:17.82 instantaneous gift that God gave to the apostles 00:54:18.05\00:54:21.82 to speak different languages to those who believed. 00:54:21.86\00:54:24.53 The ability, for example, to speak perfect French 00:54:24.69\00:54:28.50 when you didn't even know one word of French before. 00:54:28.96\00:54:31.67 And it's kind of like the angels, you know, they have 00:54:32.03\00:54:35.30 all of these different dictionaries, or all of these 00:54:35.34\00:54:37.14 different courses, and somehow electronically 00:54:37.17\00:54:40.11 they take the language and they plug it into their brain, 00:54:40.14\00:54:45.21 and suddenly you can talk the language and you can 00:54:45.25\00:54:47.65 identify with the culture, you can use the idioms. 00:54:47.68\00:54:50.09 And you speak it perfectly without an accent. 00:54:50.19\00:54:52.55 That was the gift of tongues that God gave that impressed 00:54:52.95\00:54:56.32 on believers and said, "These guys didn't know 00:54:56.36\00:54:58.29 these languages before. 00:54:58.33\00:54:59.66 And here they're speaking these languages. 00:54:59.76\00:55:01.50 We better listen to what they have to say." 00:55:01.53\00:55:04.03 Now the final question, what conditions must exist 00:55:05.17\00:55:09.00 in order to receive the gift of tongues? 00:55:09.14\00:55:11.87 In order for God to give the gift of tongues, 00:55:11.91\00:55:13.78 what condition must exist? 00:55:13.81\00:55:15.51 It must be what? 00:55:16.95\00:55:18.35 Well yeah, you need to cleanse your soul. 00:55:19.61\00:55:21.22 But I'm mean, under what circumstances will God 00:55:21.25\00:55:24.75 give the gift of tongues? 00:55:24.79\00:55:26.12 For what reason would He give the gift of tongues? 00:55:26.15\00:55:28.42 He gives the gift of tongues when you have a circumstance 00:55:29.36\00:55:32.53 where those who are present need to hear the Word 00:55:32.56\00:55:36.93 and they don't know the language that you know. 00:55:36.97\00:55:40.04 The gift of tongues is given for practical reasons. 00:55:41.14\00:55:44.11 It's given to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:55:44.31\00:55:46.88 It is not given for people to simply show off that they can 00:55:47.24\00:55:52.31 speak in a language that even God doesn't understand. 00:55:52.35\00:55:54.92 It's not like the "gift," in quotation marks, 00:55:55.35\00:55:58.12 that Kenneth Copeland showed in the Tony Palmer meeting, 00:55:58.15\00:56:01.82 you know, where he started rattling off, blessing the pope, 00:56:02.02\00:56:04.93 in a language that nobody could understand. 00:56:04.96\00:56:07.83 How do you know that this message is not a message 00:56:08.03\00:56:11.93 from the netherworld? 00:56:11.97\00:56:13.74 And if somebody interprets the message, how do you know 00:56:14.74\00:56:16.94 that the interpreter is not inventing some interpretation? 00:56:16.97\00:56:19.87 The fact is, folks, the only way that you can check it out 00:56:19.91\00:56:22.48 is by seeing if what the person teaches 00:56:22.71\00:56:25.11 is in harmony with God's Word. 00:56:25.15\00:56:26.61 To the law and to the testimony, if they speak not according 00:56:27.68\00:56:30.89 to this word, it is because there is no light in them. 00:56:30.92\00:56:33.46 We have to check what Kenneth Copeland or anyone else 00:56:33.56\00:56:36.06 teaches to see if it's in harmony with the Bible. 00:56:36.09\00:56:38.46 We cannot go by some supposed supernatural language 00:56:38.56\00:56:41.83 that he speaks that no one can understand, and say, 00:56:41.86\00:56:44.07 "Oh, this is a gift of the Holy Spirit." 00:56:44.10\00:56:46.23 Now you say, "But what about 1 Corinthians 14? 00:56:46.97\00:56:49.67 What about the apostle Paul saying, speaking about, 00:56:50.61\00:56:53.07 you know, when you speak in a tongue, you speak mysteries?" 00:56:53.27\00:56:55.84 And it refers there to strange tongues, etc. 00:56:56.04\00:56:59.65 How do we deal with 1 Corinthians 14? 00:56:59.68\00:57:02.05 Well, folks, that is the subject of our next study. 00:57:02.72\00:57:06.52 So I hope you don't miss it. 00:57:06.72\00:57:09.22
