Well hello, everybody, once again. 00:00:13.91\00:00:16.01 Time flies, doesn't it? 00:00:17.01\00:00:18.78 We are going to study topic number seven today 00:00:19.68\00:00:24.62 of ten that we are planning to present. 00:00:25.02\00:00:27.56 And the title of our study today is, 00:00:27.86\00:00:31.09 The Tongues of Pentecost. 00:00:31.29\00:00:33.60 And basically, we're going to take a look at Acts 2 00:00:33.80\00:00:38.03 where we find a description of the outpouring 00:00:38.87\00:00:41.04 of the Holy Spirit. 00:00:41.07\00:00:42.40 But before we do, what do we want to do? 00:00:42.50\00:00:45.97 We want to pray to ask for the Lord's wisdom. 00:00:46.34\00:00:49.11 And so please bow your heads with me as we pray. 00:00:49.14\00:00:52.01 Our Father and our God, once again we come before Your throne 00:00:52.85\00:00:56.22 with boldness, because we come in the name of Jesus. 00:00:57.09\00:01:00.16 We come to plead with You to send Your Holy Spirit 00:01:00.79\00:01:04.16 through the ministry of the angels to give us understanding. 00:01:04.19\00:01:07.96 Help us to understand, Lord, the true meaning 00:01:08.33\00:01:11.23 of what took place on the day of Pentecost. 00:01:11.43\00:01:14.34 We know that there are many delusions and deceptions 00:01:14.74\00:01:17.27 out there, even in the Christian world. 00:01:17.31\00:01:19.37 And we want to know what Your will is, 00:01:19.67\00:01:22.68 and what really happened on the day of Pentecost, 00:01:22.71\00:01:25.21 and for what purpose. 00:01:25.25\00:01:26.58 And so we ask for divine guidance. 00:01:26.82\00:01:28.85 And we know that You will answer, because we ask it 00:01:29.18\00:01:31.42 in the precious name of Jesus. 00:01:31.45\00:01:33.42 Amen. 00:01:33.62\00:01:34.96 Six months before Jesus began His ministry, 00:01:37.23\00:01:40.56 God called John the Baptist to preach in the wilderness 00:01:41.80\00:01:45.70 to prepare the way for the coming of the Messiah. 00:01:45.73\00:01:49.40 And the message that John preached is found in 00:01:50.24\00:01:54.44 several gospels, but I particularly want to read 00:01:54.48\00:01:58.38 the description of his message as it is given 00:01:58.41\00:02:01.55 in Matthew 3:11. 00:02:01.58\00:02:04.99 And there are other verses that present other aspects of his 00:02:05.02\00:02:08.49 message, but for our purposes we're going to read verse 11. 00:02:08.52\00:02:12.43 It says there, and John is speaking... 00:02:13.06\00:02:16.00 "...but He who is coming after me..." 00:02:22.34\00:02:25.14 That is Jesus the Messiah. 00:02:25.34\00:02:27.08 Now there are three items that I want us to remember 00:02:40.49\00:02:43.59 from this particular verse. 00:02:43.63\00:02:44.96 Because we're going to find these three concepts 00:02:44.99\00:02:48.13 in other verses as we study along. 00:02:48.83\00:02:51.13 First of all, I want us to remember the word, "baptize." 00:02:51.50\00:02:56.47 That word will recur again in connection with Pentecost. 00:02:56.57\00:03:00.94 I want us to remember the expression 00:03:00.98\00:03:04.25 or the name, "Holy Spirit." 00:03:04.28\00:03:06.35 And I want us to remember also, "fire." 00:03:06.75\00:03:11.45 Because I want you to see that what John the Baptist 00:03:11.89\00:03:15.26 was predicting was not only the coming of the Messiah, 00:03:15.29\00:03:19.29 but He was predicting what was going to take place 00:03:19.49\00:03:22.46 on the day of Pentecost. 00:03:22.50\00:03:24.37 These three concepts that we find in this verse 00:03:24.97\00:03:28.87 have to do with something that happened 00:03:28.90\00:03:31.81 on the day of Pentecost. 00:03:31.84\00:03:33.78 Baptize, Holy Spirit, and fire; don't forget those words. 00:03:33.81\00:03:39.81 Now I want us to go to Luke 24:44-49. 00:03:40.12\00:03:46.39 Luke 24, and let's actually start reading at verse 46. 00:03:46.82\00:03:53.26 Luke 24:46 00:03:53.29\00:03:56.97 Here, we find Jesus in the upper room 00:03:57.40\00:04:01.10 the day of the resurrection, or the evening of the resurrection 00:04:01.14\00:04:04.31 more specifically. 00:04:04.34\00:04:05.67 And there are several concepts that I want us to notice here. 00:04:05.77\00:04:08.64 This is taking place forty days before the ascension of Christ. 00:04:08.68\00:04:13.78 That's an important detail. 00:04:13.82\00:04:15.55 And it's happening about fifty days before 00:04:15.78\00:04:18.75 the day of Pentecost. 00:04:18.79\00:04:20.12 And I want you to notice the elements that we find here 00:04:20.32\00:04:23.43 in Luke 24 beginning with verse 46. 00:04:23.46\00:04:26.80 "Then He said to them, 'Thus it is written, 00:04:26.83\00:04:30.53 and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer 00:04:31.00\00:04:34.10 and to rise from the dead on the third day...'" 00:04:34.14\00:04:36.81 So you notice, it speaks about the suffering of Jesus 00:04:36.84\00:04:39.61 and rising the third day. 00:04:39.64\00:04:41.64 And notice this, "...and that repentance 00:04:42.28\00:04:45.81 and remission of sins..." 00:04:46.01\00:04:48.32 Remember those two concepts. 00:04:48.65\00:04:50.22 "...that repentance and remission of sins 00:04:50.42\00:04:53.22 should be..." What? 00:04:53.25\00:04:54.59 "...should be preached..." 00:04:54.66\00:04:56.49 So the central message of this passage 00:04:56.52\00:04:59.43 is the preaching of a message. 00:04:59.46\00:05:03.60 And so it says, "...and that repentance and remission of sins 00:05:03.63\00:05:07.00 should be preached in His name..." Where? 00:05:07.04\00:05:10.61 "...to all nations, beginning..." Where? 00:05:10.87\00:05:15.08 "...beginning at Jerusalem. 00:05:15.38\00:05:17.18 And you are witnesses of these things." 00:05:17.48\00:05:19.95 In other words, "You're suppose to go out and proclaim this. 00:05:19.98\00:05:22.75 Proclaim repentance and the forgiveness of sins. 00:05:23.12\00:05:25.79 You're the ones who have been chosen to preach this." 00:05:25.82\00:05:28.49 And then notice verse 49. 00:05:28.76\00:05:30.83 "Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you." 00:05:30.99\00:05:34.90 This is going to take place fifty days after this appearance 00:05:35.33\00:05:39.37 of Jesus to His disciples. 00:05:39.40\00:05:40.97 So it says, "Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; 00:05:41.00\00:05:44.47 but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are 00:05:44.84\00:05:50.25 endued with power from on high." 00:05:50.28\00:05:53.88 Now let's summarize the key points that we find 00:05:54.65\00:05:57.42 in this passage which we need to understand 00:05:57.45\00:05:59.95 in order to comprehend what will happen on the day of Pentecost. 00:05:59.99\00:06:02.99 First of all, there's preaching, repentance, 00:06:03.43\00:06:07.40 and remission of sins. 00:06:07.43\00:06:08.76 We're going to find that on the day of Pentecost once again. 00:06:08.80\00:06:11.27 We find that the preaching will begin where? 00:06:11.67\00:06:14.87 It will begin at Jerusalem. That's right. 00:06:15.24\00:06:17.84 And the message then is to go where? 00:06:18.21\00:06:20.58 To all the nations. 00:06:21.11\00:06:23.24 And who were to be the witnesses that would preach the message? 00:06:23.28\00:06:26.78 The apostles, right? 00:06:27.05\00:06:28.42 Those to whom Jesus is speaking. 00:06:28.45\00:06:30.42 But before they go out to preach in Jerusalem 00:06:30.55\00:06:33.49 and take the message to the whole world, 00:06:33.52\00:06:36.16 they are to wait in Jerusalem to receive what? 00:06:36.46\00:06:40.63 To receive the power. 00:06:40.66\00:06:42.00 Are the elements clear? 00:06:42.03\00:06:43.37 It's very important that we have these points clear, 00:06:43.40\00:06:45.67 because we're going to face them again 00:06:45.70\00:06:48.00 when we get to the day of Pentecost. 00:06:48.04\00:06:49.80 Now let's move forward a little bit to what occurred 00:06:50.21\00:06:53.51 forty days later. 00:06:53.54\00:06:55.14 This is happening right before the ascension of Christ, 00:06:55.91\00:06:59.15 forty days after the passage that we just read. 00:06:59.18\00:07:01.98 Now I want you to notice that John the Baptist 00:07:02.52\00:07:05.59 is mentioned here in this passage by Jesus. 00:07:05.62\00:07:10.13 This is very, very important. 00:07:10.16\00:07:11.79 Because I want you to see that the gift that was given 00:07:12.26\00:07:15.16 on the day of Pentecost was the same gift that 00:07:15.20\00:07:17.60 John the Baptist spoke about. 00:07:17.63\00:07:19.30 So there's a link between John the Baptist 00:07:19.40\00:07:22.10 speaking about baptism, and speaking about Holy Spirit, 00:07:22.14\00:07:24.74 and speaking about fire, and what Jesus said 00:07:24.77\00:07:27.58 right before His ascension. 00:07:27.61\00:07:29.21 Now notice what we find in Acts 1:4-5. 00:07:29.24\00:07:32.91 "And being assembled together with them, 00:07:33.48\00:07:36.18 He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem..." 00:07:36.55\00:07:39.89 Did we already read that in Luke 24? 00:07:39.92\00:07:42.49 The same thing, right? 00:07:42.59\00:07:43.93 "...but to wait for the Promise of the Father..." 00:07:44.13\00:07:47.63 Is that the same thing He had said in the upper room? 00:07:47.66\00:07:49.80 Absolutely. 00:07:49.83\00:07:51.17 "'...which', He said, 'you have heard from Me.'" 00:07:51.20\00:07:54.10 Now notice that He's going to refer to John the Baptist. 00:07:54.44\00:07:57.11 This is the same gift that John the Baptist spoke about. 00:07:57.21\00:08:00.08 This is a very important detail. 00:08:00.11\00:08:01.74 So verse 5 says, "For John truly baptized with water, 00:08:01.94\00:08:07.55 but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit 00:08:07.75\00:08:12.05 not many days from now." 00:08:12.15\00:08:14.09 Let me ask you, did John the Baptist talk about 00:08:15.02\00:08:17.23 being baptized with the Holy Spirit 00:08:17.26\00:08:19.69 in the message that we found in Matthew 3:11? 00:08:19.93\00:08:23.00 Absolutely. We find two of the elements here. 00:08:23.23\00:08:25.43 And on the day of Pentecost, 00:08:25.73\00:08:27.14 we're going to find tongues of fire. 00:08:27.17\00:08:28.50 So we're going to find all three elements that John the Baptist 00:08:28.54\00:08:31.51 announced we find taking place on the day of Pentecost. 00:08:31.54\00:08:34.48 So my question is, was John speaking about the outpouring 00:08:34.51\00:08:38.08 of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost 00:08:38.11\00:08:39.88 when he preached in the wilderness? 00:08:39.91\00:08:41.32 Absolutely. 00:08:41.42\00:08:42.75 Now let's summarize what we find in Acts 1:4-5. 00:08:42.78\00:08:46.25 First of all, Jesus says, "Don't depart from Jerusalem." 00:08:46.59\00:08:49.89 Secondly, He says, "Wait for the promise of the Father." 00:08:50.39\00:08:54.73 Which is the promise of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. 00:08:54.76\00:08:57.23 Jesus makes a specific reference to whom? 00:08:58.10\00:09:00.94 To John the Baptist. 00:09:00.97\00:09:02.30 This is the same gift that John the Baptist spoke about. 00:09:02.34\00:09:05.17 And there are two key words that John used which Jesus uses. 00:09:05.61\00:09:09.14 And those key words are, baptism and Holy Spirit. 00:09:09.18\00:09:13.15 And we know that on the day of Pentecost, 00:09:13.21\00:09:15.42 there were tongues of fire. 00:09:15.52\00:09:16.85 So you have the three elements of Matthew 3:11 in Acts 1. 00:09:16.89\00:09:22.26 Now let's ask the question, what was the purpose 00:09:22.79\00:09:26.59 of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit 00:09:26.63\00:09:28.63 on the day of Pentecost? 00:09:28.66\00:09:30.77 Was it to give the apostles a spiritual high? 00:09:30.87\00:09:34.64 Did it have the purpose of showing that they were saved? 00:09:34.84\00:09:40.01 Was it a sign that, you know, now they were saved 00:09:40.21\00:09:43.24 because they had the Holy Spirit and they spoke in tongues? 00:09:43.28\00:09:46.85 Absolutely not. 00:09:46.88\00:09:48.22 The purpose of this gift was to have power 00:09:48.45\00:09:52.89 to proclaim the message. 00:09:52.92\00:09:54.49 Beginning in Jerusalem, and going to the nations. 00:09:54.52\00:09:57.59 In other words, the task is evangelism. 00:09:57.79\00:10:00.60 And the Holy Spirit is the power to fulfill 00:10:00.86\00:10:04.60 the evangelistic task. 00:10:04.70\00:10:06.30 I want you to notice this very clearly in Acts 1:8. 00:10:06.33\00:10:11.04 Remember that this is the same context of verses 4 and 5 00:10:11.44\00:10:14.18 that we just read. 00:10:14.21\00:10:15.54 Jesus is about to ascend. 00:10:15.58\00:10:16.91 In fact, in verse 9, the very next verse, 00:10:16.95\00:10:19.68 Jesus ascends to heaven. 00:10:19.71\00:10:21.32 Now notice what it says in Acts 1:8. 00:10:21.35\00:10:24.45 "But you shall receive power... 00:10:24.89\00:10:29.12 ... when the Holy Spirit has come upon you." 00:10:30.63\00:10:33.16 So notice, "You shall receive..." 00:10:33.19\00:10:35.63 So the first thing we have is that they're going to receive. 00:10:35.66\00:10:37.97 "You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit 00:10:38.00\00:10:41.07 has come upon you." 00:10:41.10\00:10:42.44 And what is the purpose of the power? 00:10:42.47\00:10:44.07 Notice the verse says, "You shall be..." What? 00:10:44.71\00:10:48.31 Had Jesus said that in Luke 24? 00:10:48.91\00:10:51.11 Is that one of the elements, that, "you are My witnesses"? 00:10:51.15\00:10:53.45 Absolutely. 00:10:53.48\00:10:54.82 So it says, "You shall be My witnesses..." 00:10:54.85\00:10:57.42 And now notice the sequence. 00:10:57.45\00:10:58.95 "...in Jerusalem, in all Judea, and Samaria..." 00:10:59.12\00:11:03.79 And where? 00:11:03.83\00:11:05.16 "...and unto the end of the earth." 00:11:05.19\00:11:07.60 Now it's important for us to realize that before 00:11:08.56\00:11:12.23 the Holy Spirit could be poured out, 00:11:12.27\00:11:14.40 before the message could be preached, 00:11:14.84\00:11:17.07 Jesus had to perform certain works on earth 00:11:17.51\00:11:21.01 which needed to be proclaimed. 00:11:21.44\00:11:22.98 First of all, we've studied that Jesus needed 00:11:23.75\00:11:25.91 to live a perfect life. 00:11:25.95\00:11:27.48 Because no human being can offer the law perfection. 00:11:27.88\00:11:30.92 And the law requires perfection. 00:11:30.95\00:11:33.02 Secondly, Jesus had to die for the sins of the world. 00:11:33.46\00:11:38.33 Because if He didn't die, we would all have to die. 00:11:38.63\00:11:42.16 So in other words, Jesus had to live a perfect life 00:11:42.46\00:11:45.43 and He had to die for sin before the Holy Spirit 00:11:45.53\00:11:49.94 could be poured out in power for the disciples 00:11:49.97\00:11:52.21 to proclaim the message. 00:11:52.24\00:11:53.58 Because the purpose of the message was for the apostles 00:11:53.61\00:11:56.78 to say, and we're going to see this in a few moments, 00:11:56.81\00:11:59.28 "Listen, Jesus lived the perfect life that the 00:11:59.61\00:12:02.82 law requires from us. 00:12:02.85\00:12:04.45 And Jesus paid the debt for sin. 00:12:04.65\00:12:07.16 And if you repent and you receive Jesus as your Savior, 00:12:07.46\00:12:12.49 you confess your sins, then you will receive remission 00:12:12.53\00:12:16.70 or forgiveness of sins through His name." 00:12:16.73\00:12:19.20 In other words, they could not proclaim the message 00:12:19.37\00:12:22.00 with the power until Jesus had performed what the message is. 00:12:22.04\00:12:26.37 Are you understanding what I'm saying? 00:12:26.41\00:12:27.88 And so there could be no outpouring of the Holy Spirit 00:12:27.91\00:12:31.21 without Jesus living His perfect life and dying 00:12:31.25\00:12:34.42 for the sins of the world. 00:12:34.58\00:12:35.92 Because that was the content of the preaching of the apostles. 00:12:35.95\00:12:38.79 So to give the power without any content to the preaching 00:12:38.82\00:12:42.69 would be absolutely useless. 00:12:42.89\00:12:44.83 What I want you to notice here especially 00:12:45.03\00:12:47.50 is that the Holy Spirit was poured out for the purpose 00:12:47.83\00:12:52.90 of giving them power to witness. 00:12:53.34\00:12:56.20 In other words, it was not to give them a spiritual high. 00:12:56.67\00:13:00.14 It was not given to them for self-edification. 00:13:00.61\00:13:03.91 The purpose of the power was so that they would be enabled 00:13:04.18\00:13:08.75 to preach that Jesus had lived, Jesus had died, 00:13:08.78\00:13:12.02 and Jesus had ascended to heaven. 00:13:12.05\00:13:14.06 He was the Intercessor in heaven and you could come to Him 00:13:14.09\00:13:17.13 and claim what He did while He was on earth. 00:13:17.16\00:13:19.59 That was the purpose of the power of the Holy Spirit. 00:13:19.63\00:13:22.63 Witness. 00:13:22.66\00:13:24.00 By the way, Jesus had already announced this 00:13:24.03\00:13:27.17 before the day of Pentecost during His ministry. 00:13:27.37\00:13:30.47 I don't know if you remember, but a few lectures ago 00:13:30.81\00:13:33.24 we studied about John 7:37-39. 00:13:33.27\00:13:36.78 It's a very interesting passage. 00:13:36.98\00:13:38.71 You remember that we studied the rock episodes? 00:13:39.31\00:13:42.98 When the water came out of the rock? 00:13:43.02\00:13:44.79 The two rock episodes of the Old Testament. 00:13:44.82\00:13:46.96 Notice what we find in John 7:37-39. 00:13:47.22\00:13:51.39 This is at the Feast of Tabernacles, 00:13:51.49\00:13:53.29 the last day of the feast. 00:13:53.33\00:13:54.66 The eighth day. 00:13:54.70\00:13:56.03 "On the last day, that great day of the feast, 00:13:56.63\00:14:00.44 Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone thirsts, 00:14:00.47\00:14:05.04 let him come to Me and drink." 00:14:05.34\00:14:08.01 And then He says this, "He who believes in Me..." 00:14:08.81\00:14:12.15 Do you need to repent and confess your sins 00:14:13.62\00:14:16.32 in order to believe in Jesus and receive Jesus as your Savior? 00:14:16.75\00:14:20.79 Of course you do. 00:14:21.12\00:14:22.46 So Jesus says, "He who believes in Me, 00:14:22.49\00:14:25.49 as the Scripture has said," now listen carefully, 00:14:25.59\00:14:28.46 "out of his heart will flow rivers of living water." 00:14:28.86\00:14:33.23 So in other words, when you drink the water, 00:14:34.60\00:14:37.17 which is a symbol of the Holy Spirit, 00:14:37.21\00:14:38.54 when you receive the Holy Spirit, you become a fountain 00:14:38.57\00:14:41.84 to give the blessing to other people. 00:14:41.94\00:14:44.65 And so what is the purpose of drinking the water 00:14:44.91\00:14:47.08 or receiving the power? 00:14:47.12\00:14:48.45 It's so that you can share the message that you have received. 00:14:48.48\00:14:52.35 The same thing we found in the case of the Samaritan woman. 00:14:53.19\00:14:56.26 Notice John 4:13-14. 00:14:56.29\00:15:00.06 John 4:13-14 00:15:00.10\00:15:02.36 "Jesus answered and said to her, 'Whoever drinks 00:15:02.86\00:15:06.47 of this water,'" that is, from Jacob's well, 00:15:06.50\00:15:09.20 "will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water 00:15:09.54\00:15:13.61 that I shall give..." 00:15:13.64\00:15:15.51 Notice, future. 00:15:16.41\00:15:17.75 "...the water that I shall give will never thirst. 00:15:17.78\00:15:22.02 But the water that I shall give him..." 00:15:22.12\00:15:24.25 See, first of all, you drink. 00:15:24.29\00:15:25.79 "The water that I shall give him will become in him a..." What? 00:15:25.82\00:15:31.23 "...a fountain of water springing up 00:15:31.26\00:15:33.86 into everlasting life." 00:15:33.90\00:15:35.26 So once again, you drink the water, 00:15:35.46\00:15:38.03 you receive the power of the Spirit, 00:15:38.07\00:15:40.14 and then you become a witness. 00:15:40.24\00:15:42.74 You share the power. 00:15:42.77\00:15:44.11 You become a fountain of blessing to other people. 00:15:44.14\00:15:46.44 Are you following me or not? 00:15:46.47\00:15:47.81 So what is the purpose of the power that people receive 00:15:48.08\00:15:51.65 in the Holy Spirit? 00:15:52.65\00:15:53.98 The purpose is not self-edification. 00:15:54.02\00:15:56.08 The purpose is not to have a spiritual high. 00:15:56.18\00:15:58.59 The purpose is to empower you to what? 00:15:58.62\00:16:02.56 To witness. 00:16:02.92\00:16:04.26 And by the way, going back to John 7:37-39, 00:16:04.29\00:16:08.30 we know Jesus was speaking about the Holy Spirit. 00:16:08.33\00:16:10.47 That when you drink the Holy Spirit, 00:16:10.50\00:16:11.83 you become a fountain of blessing. 00:16:11.87\00:16:13.40 Because in verse 39, it says, "But this He spake 00:16:13.44\00:16:16.30 concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him 00:16:16.34\00:16:20.18 would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, 00:16:20.21\00:16:22.98 because Jesus was not yet glorified." 00:16:23.18\00:16:25.45 But then when Jesus was glorified, when He ascended 00:16:25.48\00:16:28.58 to the right hand of His Father, 00:16:28.62\00:16:30.12 then the Holy Spirit was poured out. 00:16:30.15\00:16:33.12 And the apostles received power so that they could 00:16:33.15\00:16:36.09 witness to other people. 00:16:36.12\00:16:37.59 Now let's take a look at the geographical extension 00:16:38.36\00:16:41.40 of the message. 00:16:41.43\00:16:42.76 Acts 1:8 gives us the sequence of the message, 00:16:43.03\00:16:47.84 how the message was going to proceed 00:16:47.87\00:16:50.31 as the apostles preached. 00:16:50.34\00:16:51.91 You remember Jesus said, "First of all, 00:16:51.94\00:16:53.68 you're going to stay..." Where? 00:16:53.71\00:16:55.21 "You're going to stay in Jerusalem for the power, 00:16:55.48\00:16:57.65 and then you're going to be witnesses 00:16:57.68\00:16:59.01 to Me beginning..." Where? 00:16:59.05\00:17:00.38 Beginning in Jerusalem. 00:17:00.68\00:17:02.32 Now let's read that verse once again and notice the places. 00:17:02.35\00:17:05.52 Ever growing concentric circles of where the message 00:17:05.72\00:17:08.62 was to be proclaimed. 00:17:08.66\00:17:09.99 It says in Acts 1:8... 00:17:10.03\00:17:11.96 Do you notice that it begins in Jerusalem; 00:17:32.41\00:17:34.45 you have a small circle. 00:17:34.48\00:17:35.82 Then it goes to Judea, which is a region. 00:17:35.92\00:17:38.75 And then it goes to Samaria that is beyond that. 00:17:38.85\00:17:42.09 And then it goes to the ends of the earth, 00:17:42.12\00:17:44.46 the largest concentric circle. 00:17:44.49\00:17:46.26 It goes to the whole world after that. 00:17:46.29\00:17:48.96 Now it's interesting to notice that the gift of tongues 00:17:49.83\00:17:52.53 was initially given to the apostles in the upper room. 00:17:52.57\00:17:56.00 But it's also interesting that the people who heard the message 00:17:56.94\00:18:01.48 of Peter, and we're going to study this, who heard the 00:18:01.51\00:18:03.75 message of Peter on the day of Pentecost 00:18:03.78\00:18:06.21 did not receive the gift of tongues. 00:18:06.25\00:18:08.35 Those who preached the message on the day of Pentecost 00:18:08.95\00:18:12.32 received the power of the Holy Spirit 00:18:12.35\00:18:13.99 and received the gift of tongues. 00:18:14.02\00:18:15.69 But those who accepted the message, there is no 00:18:15.92\00:18:19.29 record of them receiving the gift of tongues. 00:18:19.39\00:18:22.20 I want us to remember that, because there's a very special 00:18:22.23\00:18:24.53 reason why the apostles and those who were present 00:18:24.57\00:18:27.84 in the upper room received the power of the Holy Spirit 00:18:27.87\00:18:31.04 and the gift of tongues, but those who heard their message 00:18:31.07\00:18:34.04 and received the message, they received the Holy Spirit 00:18:34.08\00:18:36.51 when they were baptized, but they did not receive 00:18:36.54\00:18:38.68 the gift of tongues, for a very specific reason. 00:18:38.71\00:18:41.32 Now how many people were present in the upper room 00:18:41.68\00:18:44.49 on the day of Pentecost? 00:18:44.52\00:18:45.95 Acts 1:15 tells us how many were present. 00:18:46.25\00:18:50.39 There weren't only the twelve there. 00:18:50.59\00:18:52.56 There were many more than the twelve. 00:18:52.59\00:18:54.83 It says there in Acts 1:15... 00:18:55.03\00:18:57.37 So there weren't only twelve there. 00:19:08.68\00:19:10.25 There were many others who, on the day of Pentecost, 00:19:10.28\00:19:13.21 received the Holy Spirit, 00:19:13.25\00:19:14.58 and the gift of tongues specifically. 00:19:14.62\00:19:16.85 Now let's read Acts 2:1-4 which describes the outpouring 00:19:17.25\00:19:23.49 of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. 00:19:23.53\00:19:25.59 It says in Acts 2:1, "When the day of Pentecost 00:19:25.76\00:19:30.53 had fully come..." 00:19:30.57\00:19:32.20 That means that Pentecost took place at the exact time 00:19:33.10\00:19:36.67 when the fifty days between the resurrection 00:19:36.71\00:19:39.27 and the day of Pentecost took place. 00:19:39.31\00:19:40.64 To the very hour, we're going to notice. 00:19:40.68\00:19:42.54 So it says... 00:19:42.58\00:19:43.91 Had John the Baptist predicted fire? 00:20:02.93\00:20:05.30 Yes he had. 00:20:05.33\00:20:06.67 "And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit..." 00:20:13.78\00:20:16.31 Is that something that John the Baptist had preached? 00:20:16.34\00:20:18.75 Absolutely. 00:20:18.78\00:20:20.12 So who gave the gift of the Holy Spirit? 00:20:29.86\00:20:31.96 The Holy Spirit did. The gift of tongues. 00:20:33.13\00:20:35.70 And we noticed that the angels were involved, right? 00:20:35.73\00:20:38.47 It was really the Holy Spirit through the ministration 00:20:38.50\00:20:40.87 of the angels. 00:20:40.90\00:20:42.24 Now the question is, why did God impart the gift of tongues 00:20:42.37\00:20:45.97 when He gave the Holy Spirit to the apostles 00:20:46.01\00:20:48.01 and those who were gathered in the upper room? 00:20:48.04\00:20:49.94 Was it for them to have a spiritual high? 00:20:50.48\00:20:53.88 Or for them to self-edify their own spiritual experience? 00:20:53.92\00:20:58.05 Absolutely not. 00:20:58.09\00:20:59.42 There was a practical reason why on the day of Pentecost 00:20:59.65\00:21:02.66 God gave the gift of tongues. 00:21:02.69\00:21:04.59 Notice Acts 2:5-8. 00:21:04.89\00:21:07.20 We're going to work our way through this chapter. 00:21:07.23\00:21:08.93 We're going to study the whole chapter, 00:21:08.96\00:21:10.30 at least in broad strokes. 00:21:10.33\00:21:12.00 Acts 2:5-8 00:21:12.10\00:21:14.57 That is, the sound of the mighty rushing wind. 00:21:26.25\00:21:28.42 "...because everyone heard them..." 00:21:33.59\00:21:35.49 That is, those who were gathered, not only the twelve, 00:21:35.76\00:21:38.19 but those who were gathered in the upper room. 00:21:38.23\00:21:40.10 "...because everyone heard them..." 00:21:40.20\00:21:42.53 Doing what? 00:21:44.40\00:21:45.73 "...speak in his own language." 00:21:46.27\00:21:49.44 Now was this the gift of hearing tongues, 00:21:50.64\00:21:52.77 or was this the gift of speaking in tongues? 00:21:52.81\00:21:55.34 It was the gift of speaking in tongues. 00:21:55.78\00:21:58.11 It's not that the apostles were speaking their language 00:21:58.15\00:22:01.08 and the others were hearing in their language. No. 00:22:01.28\00:22:03.92 This was the gift of tongues spoken. 00:22:04.09\00:22:08.16 Not understanding tongues, but speaking in tongues. 00:22:08.32\00:22:11.33 And so it says in verse 6... 00:22:11.36\00:22:12.93 They probably spoke Aramaic. 00:22:28.34\00:22:30.08 So they're saying, "Aren't these individuals 00:22:30.28\00:22:32.21 persons who speak in Aramaic?" 00:22:32.25\00:22:34.65 Let me ask you, were those languages that were known 00:22:48.00\00:22:50.87 in different parts of the world? 00:22:50.90\00:22:52.53 Sure. 00:22:52.83\00:22:54.17 You certainly would not say that you're born with the 00:22:54.87\00:22:57.34 gift of speaking gibberish. 00:22:57.37\00:22:59.11 Right? 00:22:59.54\00:23:00.88 When they say they're "speaking in the languages 00:23:00.91\00:23:03.35 in which we were born," basically they're saying, 00:23:03.38\00:23:05.98 "the language of the nation that we are from." 00:23:06.01\00:23:08.15 Right? 00:23:08.35\00:23:09.68 Now, why would that happen? 00:23:09.72\00:23:11.42 Why would God give them the ability to speak 00:23:11.45\00:23:14.26 the languages of the nations in which people were born? 00:23:14.29\00:23:17.39 We need to read verses 9-11. There's the explanation. 00:23:17.63\00:23:20.70 It says that present there were what? 00:23:20.93\00:23:24.50 What did they speak? 00:23:50.99\00:23:52.33 "...the wonderful works of God." 00:23:52.63\00:23:55.16 Would they understand what the wonderful works of God were 00:23:56.30\00:23:59.50 if they were speaking gibberish that nobody understood? 00:23:59.53\00:24:02.30 Of course not. 00:24:02.34\00:24:03.67 They were speaking in languages that were known 00:24:03.74\00:24:06.71 in different parts of the world. 00:24:06.74\00:24:08.71 And the purpose of the gift of tongues on the day of Pentecost 00:24:09.14\00:24:12.15 was that there were many nations that had gathered there 00:24:12.18\00:24:15.15 because it was the feast of Pentecost. 00:24:15.18\00:24:17.19 And all men twelve years and older had to go 00:24:17.22\00:24:19.85 to the feast of Pentecost. 00:24:19.89\00:24:21.39 And so having all of the people from all of these nations, 00:24:21.59\00:24:24.93 it was necessary to share the good news about Jesus. 00:24:25.06\00:24:28.20 And therefore, God gave the apostles the capacity 00:24:28.36\00:24:31.83 to speak in the languages of these nations 00:24:31.87\00:24:34.07 so that they could share the good news about Jesus Christ. 00:24:34.10\00:24:37.64 Ellen White, in the book, Acts of the Apostles, page 39, 00:24:38.11\00:24:41.48 has this very interesting statement. 00:24:41.71\00:24:43.45 See, it was a symbol. 00:25:13.78\00:25:15.11 Do you remember Jeremiah said that he felt a fire in 00:25:21.45\00:25:23.52 his bones to share the message of God? 00:25:23.55\00:25:25.89 Well, the fire represents the zeal with which they presented 00:25:25.92\00:25:29.06 the message of Jesus Christ. 00:25:29.09\00:25:30.73 And so they were able to speak with fluency the languages 00:25:31.09\00:25:36.56 of the different nations that were represented there. 00:25:36.60\00:25:39.30 But now I want you to notice Acts 2:12-13. 00:25:39.63\00:25:43.94 Once again, we're told that those who were 00:25:43.97\00:25:46.17 present were bewildered. 00:25:46.21\00:25:47.54 And some of them started giving an explanation. 00:25:47.71\00:25:50.95 It says in Acts 2:12... 00:25:50.98\00:25:53.21 In other words, "They're drunk," is what they were saying. 00:26:06.19\00:26:09.03 Now the apostle Peter, when he heard these people say, 00:26:09.76\00:26:12.37 "Ah, they're dunk. They've drunk too much. 00:26:12.40\00:26:15.17 And therefore, they're just speaking gibberish," 00:26:15.20\00:26:17.31 the apostle Peter stood up and he says, 00:26:17.41\00:26:20.41 "I have to make an explanation here." 00:26:20.44\00:26:22.11 And you find it in verses 14 and 15. 00:26:22.14\00:26:24.68 Now question, what is the third hour of the day, 00:26:45.77\00:26:48.34 biblically speaking? 00:26:48.37\00:26:49.70 The third hour of the day is nine o'clock in the morning. 00:26:50.01\00:26:54.38 And what hour of the day was the Holy Spirit poured out? 00:26:55.81\00:26:58.45 At nine a.m. 00:26:59.15\00:27:00.48 And it took place exactly fifty days after Jesus 00:27:01.08\00:27:04.59 presented the first fruits. 00:27:04.62\00:27:05.95 Remember we studied the first fruits to the Father? 00:27:05.99\00:27:08.22 So at what time of the day did Jesus present the first fruits? 00:27:08.26\00:27:11.13 It was exactly fifty days earlier. 00:27:11.46\00:27:13.56 So it must have been at nine o'clock in the morning. 00:27:13.60\00:27:16.16 And right before nine o'clock in the morning 00:27:16.20\00:27:18.73 He met with Mary Magdalene and He said, "Don't latch onto Me, 00:27:18.93\00:27:22.70 because I have to ascend to My Father." 00:27:22.74\00:27:24.57 He had an appointment at nine o'clock in the morning 00:27:24.61\00:27:27.14 to meet with His Father in heaven 00:27:27.18\00:27:28.61 to make sure that His Father accepted His sacrifice. 00:27:28.64\00:27:31.71 And so now Peter has to explain what's happening. 00:27:31.88\00:27:34.48 And so we're not going to read the verses, but in Acts 2:16-21, 00:27:34.75\00:27:39.69 Peter quotes the prophecy from Joel 2:28-32. 00:27:40.09\00:27:44.26 He says, "This is exactly what the prophet Joel spoke about." 00:27:44.29\00:27:47.43 In other words, this is a fulfillment of Bible prophecy. 00:27:47.46\00:27:50.17 And so he actually quotes this long passage from Joel 2 00:27:50.50\00:27:54.77 and he's explaining exactly what was happening 00:27:54.87\00:27:58.24 on earth at that time. 00:27:58.27\00:27:59.61 What was happening is that the prophecy of Joel 00:27:59.64\00:28:02.24 was being fulfilled before their very eyes. 00:28:02.28\00:28:05.38 And then Peter, after using the passage of Joel 00:28:05.65\00:28:08.78 to explain what was happening there on earth, 00:28:08.82\00:28:11.95 he began to tell the story of Jesus, the different stages 00:28:12.29\00:28:16.26 of the story of Jesus. 00:28:16.29\00:28:17.79 He mentioned the life of service that Jesus lived. 00:28:18.29\00:28:22.30 He mentioned the fact that Jesus died, or Jesus was killed. 00:28:22.56\00:28:26.27 And then he speaks about the resurrection of Jesus Christ. 00:28:26.57\00:28:29.94 So once again, it's His life, His death, and His resurrection. 00:28:29.97\00:28:33.01 Notice what he's preaching. 00:28:33.04\00:28:34.38 Could he preach that unless Jesus had 00:28:34.78\00:28:37.11 done those things first? 00:28:37.15\00:28:38.55 No. You see, Jesus lives His life, He dies, He resurrects, 00:28:38.61\00:28:42.88 and then He pours out the Holy Spirit. 00:28:42.92\00:28:45.02 And He says to the apostles, "You go preach what I did." 00:28:45.05\00:28:47.66 Now notice Acts 2:22-24 where Peter is talking about 00:28:47.99\00:28:52.49 the ministry of Jesus. 00:28:52.53\00:28:53.86 So he speaks about His life. 00:29:07.54\00:29:09.04 See, His life, His death. 00:29:21.96\00:29:23.99 And then, "...whom God..." What? 00:29:24.03\00:29:25.79 So he says, "Jesus lived a life of service, 00:29:33.80\00:29:36.71 Jesus died, and Jesus resurrected from the dead." 00:29:36.74\00:29:40.04 And then Peter says, "I've got to prove this from Scripture." 00:29:40.34\00:29:44.08 Notice he's used Joel 2. 00:29:44.11\00:29:45.95 Now he's going to use another passage to prove that 00:29:46.25\00:29:48.72 the Old Testament had already predicted that the Messiah 00:29:48.92\00:29:51.82 was going to live, He was going to die, 00:29:51.85\00:29:53.42 and He was going to resurrect. 00:29:53.46\00:29:54.79 And that passage is in Acts 2:25-28, 00:29:54.82\00:29:57.69 and it comes from Psalm 16:8-10. 00:29:57.79\00:30:01.16 It says there... 00:30:01.66\00:30:03.00 That is, concerning the Messiah. 00:30:04.60\00:30:06.20 This is Jesus speaking prophetically. 00:30:22.08\00:30:23.89 Or as the NIV says, "You will not leave me in the grave..." 00:30:27.42\00:30:30.59 So Peter is quoting Psalm 16 and he's saying, 00:30:41.37\00:30:44.77 "I have proof that the Messiah was going to live, 00:30:44.81\00:30:47.74 He was going to die, and He was going to resurrect. 00:30:47.78\00:30:49.84 It was predicted by David in Psalm 16." 00:30:49.88\00:30:52.38 So he's using Scripture as proof for what he's saying. 00:30:52.41\00:30:56.35 And then I want you to notice Acts 2:29-33. 00:30:56.92\00:31:00.89 He's spoken about the life of Jesus, the death of Jesus, 00:31:00.92\00:31:04.19 the resurrection of Jesus. 00:31:04.23\00:31:05.59 Now he's going to say, "Oh, but there's something else 00:31:05.69\00:31:07.63 that happened after the resurrection." 00:31:07.66\00:31:09.30 Notice beginning with verse 29. 00:31:09.40\00:31:11.60 In other words, this psalm can't apply to David 00:31:22.31\00:31:24.45 because David didn't resurrect. 00:31:24.48\00:31:25.81 David is dead. 00:31:25.91\00:31:27.25 And then he continues saying... 00:31:27.55\00:31:29.18 Do you notice the next step? 00:31:43.23\00:31:44.70 Life, death, resurrection... 00:31:45.03\00:31:47.54 ...and ascension to the right hand of God 00:31:47.94\00:31:50.01 to sit on His throne. 00:31:50.04\00:31:51.37 Verse 31... 00:31:51.41\00:31:52.74 Now here comes a very important point. 00:32:09.86\00:32:11.76 So what was happening in the upper room was a signal 00:32:26.54\00:32:30.38 that Christ had what? 00:32:30.48\00:32:32.08 That Christ had ascended to heaven, 00:32:32.31\00:32:34.35 He had sat at the right hand of God, 00:32:34.38\00:32:36.75 and He had begun His ministry of intercession 00:32:36.79\00:32:40.16 or mediation in the heavenly Sanctuary. 00:32:40.19\00:32:42.66 And of course, Peter, he knows that people are going to say, 00:32:43.29\00:32:45.79 "Well, where do you get that from?" 00:32:45.83\00:32:47.30 And so Peter quotes two prophecies once again. 00:32:47.53\00:32:51.17 See, how did Peter know about these prophecies? 00:32:51.27\00:32:54.47 Do you remember that Jesus spent forty days on this earth, 00:32:54.90\00:32:57.44 we've studied this, speaking to the apostles about the things 00:32:57.47\00:33:00.68 pertaining to the kingdom of God? 00:33:00.71\00:33:02.54 I'm sure that Jesus explained all these prophecies 00:33:02.64\00:33:05.21 to the apostles and said, "Hey, Joel is going to be fulfilled, 00:33:05.25\00:33:08.98 Joel 2 is going to be fulfilled on the day of Pentecost. 00:33:09.02\00:33:11.69 Oh by the way, Peter, you need to use also Psalm 16, 00:33:11.72\00:33:14.49 because that's speaking about Me. 00:33:14.52\00:33:15.89 Oh, and you need to remember also the prophecy that we find 00:33:15.99\00:33:20.40 in Psalm 110:1; 'Sit at My right hand until I make 00:33:20.43\00:33:25.87 Your enemies Your footstool.' 00:33:25.90\00:33:27.30 And you need to remember also Psalm 132:11 where it says 00:33:27.67\00:33:31.07 that the Messiah would come from the loins of David." 00:33:31.11\00:33:34.01 And so Peter, on the day of Pentecost, is using 00:33:34.11\00:33:37.05 all of this Scripture from the Old Testament 00:33:37.08\00:33:38.91 to sustain his sermon. 00:33:38.95\00:33:41.08 In other words, it's a biblical sermon that he's preaching. 00:33:41.12\00:33:43.69 He's not entertaining the people. 00:33:43.72\00:33:45.05 He's presenting present truth about what Jesus is doing 00:33:45.09\00:33:48.39 at that particular time. 00:33:48.42\00:33:50.03 And so he quotes, in verses 34 and 35, 00:33:50.19\00:33:53.60 he quotes Psalm 132:11 and also Psalm 110:1. 00:33:53.70\00:33:59.40 And I want you to notice what it says in verses 34 and 35. 00:33:59.60\00:34:03.41 And he's quoting Psalm 110:1. 00:34:15.18\00:34:18.69 And then the apostle Peter 00:34:19.02\00:34:20.86 reaches the climax of his sermon. 00:34:20.89\00:34:22.82 And it's found in verse 36. 00:34:23.02\00:34:25.23 You say, "Wasn't Jesus Christ before that?" 00:34:39.64\00:34:41.51 Yeah, He was Christ before that. 00:34:41.54\00:34:43.04 But do you remember when we studied about 00:34:43.65\00:34:46.72 the election of the successor of Judas that Jesus, 00:34:46.75\00:34:50.79 as Aaron was, was anointed with the oil of the Holy Spirit 00:34:50.89\00:34:54.62 when he was clothed with the garments? 00:34:54.66\00:34:56.19 Remember, he was clothed with the high priestly garments? 00:34:56.22\00:34:58.63 And the Sanctuary was anointed with oil. 00:34:58.76\00:35:01.50 And then the oil was poured on the head of Aaron, 00:35:01.60\00:35:03.80 which represents that Jesus received the gift of the 00:35:03.83\00:35:06.03 Holy Spirit to pour out upon the apostles. 00:35:06.07\00:35:08.24 And so we find that when it says that the Lord has made Jesus 00:35:08.44\00:35:13.31 Lord and Christ, or anointed, it means that Jesus has been 00:35:13.34\00:35:17.28 anointed as the High Priest in the heavenly Sanctuary. 00:35:17.31\00:35:21.28 Now when Peter finished his sermon, the question is, 00:35:21.98\00:35:24.39 what was the response of those who were present? 00:35:24.42\00:35:27.12 Apparently, Peter didn't even have to make a call. 00:35:27.42\00:35:29.86 Because we're told in verse 37, "Now when they heard this..." 00:35:30.46\00:35:34.60 That is, that Jesus had lived, He had died, He had resurrected, 00:35:34.63\00:35:38.37 He had ascended, and He was sitting at the right hand 00:35:38.40\00:35:40.94 of God, He was anointed to be the High Priest, 00:35:40.97\00:35:43.84 He was anointed to be the Advocate, or the Mediator, 00:35:43.87\00:35:46.91 or the Intercessor for those who come to Him repentant 00:35:46.94\00:35:50.38 and confessing their sins and trusting in Jesus. 00:35:50.41\00:35:53.15 Now when they hear that message, we find in verse 37... 00:35:53.25\00:35:57.29 Powerful message. 00:36:01.66\00:36:02.99 "In the light of your sermon, now that Jesus 00:36:11.50\00:36:13.94 is in the heavenly Sanctuary and He's the anointed One, 00:36:13.97\00:36:17.41 and He's poured out the Holy Spirit, 00:36:17.44\00:36:18.77 what do we need to do?" 00:36:18.81\00:36:20.41 And I want you to notice what Peter said. 00:36:21.44\00:36:23.41 It's found in verse 38. 00:36:24.48\00:36:26.28 Had Jesus already spoken those words in the upper room? 00:36:32.92\00:36:35.72 That that's what the message of the apostles needed to be? 00:36:35.96\00:36:38.79 Absolutely. 00:36:39.13\00:36:40.46 Were they going to receive the same gift of the Holy Spirit 00:36:57.61\00:36:59.91 that the apostles had received? 00:36:59.95\00:37:01.42 Yes they were. 00:37:01.78\00:37:03.12 Were they told that they should repent and be baptized? 00:37:03.39\00:37:06.35 Do you remember, that is what Jesus said in the upper room? 00:37:06.65\00:37:09.29 That they were going to be witnesses and they were 00:37:09.49\00:37:11.59 going to preach repentance and remission of sins? 00:37:11.63\00:37:14.90 So that's exactly what Peter is preaching 00:37:15.00\00:37:16.97 on the day of Pentecost. 00:37:17.00\00:37:18.33 And the people are listening, they're saying, "Oh, so Jesus 00:37:18.37\00:37:20.90 is in the heavenly Sanctuary. 00:37:20.94\00:37:22.30 He's lived His life, He's died for sin. 00:37:22.34\00:37:24.47 So what we need to do is that we need to repent, 00:37:24.57\00:37:27.61 we need to confess our sins, and we need to believe in Jesus 00:37:27.64\00:37:31.05 so that what Jesus did will be put to our account. 00:37:31.15\00:37:34.78 And so that we will be looked upon as if we had never sinned. 00:37:35.32\00:37:38.62 We need to adopt Him as our Intercessor." 00:37:39.05\00:37:41.62 And that they did. 00:37:41.89\00:37:43.22 And when they were baptized they received the Holy Spirit, 00:37:43.86\00:37:46.36 according to this. 00:37:46.39\00:37:47.73 Three thousand souls were baptized from that one sermon. 00:37:47.83\00:37:52.77 But you know what's interesting? 00:37:53.13\00:37:54.50 There is no evidence whatsoever that any of those 00:37:54.60\00:37:57.21 three thousand that were baptized and received 00:37:57.24\00:37:59.24 the Holy Spirit received the gift of tongues. 00:37:59.27\00:38:02.81 And you say, "Why not?" 00:38:04.41\00:38:06.21 For a very specific reason. 00:38:07.25\00:38:09.02 They were going to return to their nations. 00:38:09.75\00:38:13.56 And where they lived, they would not need the gift of tongues 00:38:14.52\00:38:17.66 because they could speak their native language. 00:38:17.69\00:38:20.60 It was only needed by the apostles to share the message 00:38:21.36\00:38:24.20 with them so that then they could go to the nations 00:38:24.23\00:38:26.90 and share it with the people in their nations. 00:38:26.94\00:38:29.27 And they did not need the gift of tongues to share it 00:38:29.30\00:38:31.67 with the people in their nations. 00:38:31.71\00:38:33.64 We find in Acts 2:41, and then we'll read verses 46 and 47, 00:38:34.21\00:38:39.51 the result of the sermon of Peter. 00:38:39.55\00:38:41.78 It says... 00:38:41.82\00:38:43.15 So the question is, when were these individuals saved? 00:39:10.51\00:39:12.78 Were they saved when Jesus died on the cross, 00:39:12.81\00:39:14.92 or were they saved when they accepted what 00:39:14.95\00:39:16.69 Jesus did on the cross? 00:39:16.72\00:39:18.09 When they accepted what Jesus did on the cross. 00:39:18.69\00:39:21.36 Then their sins were remitted or forgiven. 00:39:21.39\00:39:23.99 This is a very important point. 00:39:24.53\00:39:26.36 Now, why is the gift of tongues the only gift that is mentioned 00:39:26.39\00:39:31.30 in Acts 2? 00:39:31.33\00:39:32.67 You know, the Holy Spirit gives many gifts, doesn't He? 00:39:32.70\00:39:34.84 Why is the gift of tongues the only gift that is mentioned 00:39:35.17\00:39:38.61 in Acts 2? 00:39:38.64\00:39:39.97 Why didn't God give the gift of healing, 00:39:40.01\00:39:41.74 the gift of hospitality, and all of these things 00:39:41.78\00:39:44.05 to the apostles? 00:39:44.08\00:39:45.41 Listen, folks, it was because it was the gift that was 00:39:45.45\00:39:47.88 most urgently needed at that particular moment. 00:39:47.92\00:39:51.25 As it would later be needed in Caesarea, in Ephesus, 00:39:51.55\00:39:55.32 and in Corinth. 00:39:55.36\00:39:56.69 You see, on the day of Pentecost, that was 00:39:56.89\00:39:59.59 a Hebrew feast, as I mentioned before, where every man 00:39:59.63\00:40:03.03 twelve years and older had to come from any place 00:40:03.06\00:40:06.53 they lived in the world to Jerusalem to celebrate 00:40:06.57\00:40:09.17 the feast of Pentecost. 00:40:09.20\00:40:10.61 Which means that Jerusalem was bursting at the seams. 00:40:10.81\00:40:14.31 Josephus says that regularly you have over a million Jews 00:40:14.54\00:40:18.78 gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate 00:40:18.98\00:40:21.08 these harvest festivals. 00:40:21.22\00:40:23.05 Now when the Jews were dispersed among the nations, 00:40:23.28\00:40:28.52 they went to these nations, and in the course of time 00:40:28.56\00:40:31.69 they lost the ability to speak the Hebrew language. 00:40:31.73\00:40:35.10 You know, it's like second generation Hispanics 00:40:35.56\00:40:38.13 that come to the United States. 00:40:38.17\00:40:39.53 You know, we interviewed somebody for a job 00:40:39.83\00:40:41.54 here at Secrets Unsealed. 00:40:41.57\00:40:43.04 His name is Daniel Mesa. 00:40:43.07\00:40:44.54 And he can't even speak one word in Spanish. 00:40:44.57\00:40:46.78 It's because he's a second or third generation Hispanic 00:40:47.08\00:40:49.74 that has lost the ability to speak the language. 00:40:49.78\00:40:52.18 And so it was with those who were dispersed among the Jews. 00:40:52.75\00:40:56.85 They went to all of the nations, and in the course of time 00:40:56.89\00:40:59.62 they lost the knowledge of the language. 00:40:59.65\00:41:01.99 And so on the feast of Pentecost they come back to Jerusalem. 00:41:02.09\00:41:05.13 Peter and the others that are present there, they speak 00:41:05.46\00:41:08.10 the message of Jesus in the languages of these nations. 00:41:08.13\00:41:11.63 And then the idea was that they would go back to their nations 00:41:11.73\00:41:15.84 and share what they had heard. 00:41:15.87\00:41:17.67 I want to read this passage, 00:41:18.01\00:41:19.41 it's relatively long but it's really powerful, 00:41:19.44\00:41:22.54 from, Acts of the Apostles, pages 39 and 40. 00:41:22.58\00:41:26.05 Ellen White explains... 00:41:26.88\00:41:28.22 Where was the problem created? 00:41:53.44\00:41:55.14 At Babel. 00:41:56.14\00:41:57.48 God is going to say, "Now I'm going to solve 00:41:57.58\00:41:59.18 the Babel problem." 00:41:59.21\00:42:00.68 And so it says... 00:42:00.82\00:42:02.15 Folks, the gift of tongues is not a learned phenomenon. 00:42:50.27\00:42:54.17 People say, "Oh, you speak Spanish." 00:42:55.64\00:42:57.41 Because I speak Spanish fluently without an accent. 00:42:57.44\00:43:00.18 So they say, "You have the gift of tongues." 00:43:00.21\00:43:02.78 No, I don't have the gift of tongues. 00:43:02.81\00:43:04.58 Because I learned Spanish when I was a kid. 00:43:04.88\00:43:07.22 The gift of tongues is a miraculous instantaneous 00:43:07.72\00:43:12.09 gift that God gives to a person. 00:43:12.12\00:43:13.56 It's like the angels take a Rosetta Stone 00:43:13.76\00:43:16.29 and put it in the brain 00:43:16.32\00:43:17.66 so that you can speak the language accurately. 00:43:18.16\00:43:20.70 Even with the idioms, perfectly. 00:43:20.73\00:43:23.20 It's amazing. 00:43:23.57\00:43:24.90 Now let's talk about the gift that was given in Jerusalem 00:43:25.80\00:43:28.44 just a little while later. 00:43:28.47\00:43:30.51 I want you to notice some very interesting things here. 00:43:30.54\00:43:33.04 In Acts 4:31, the Holy Spirit is poured out several days later 00:43:33.41\00:43:39.55 upon a group in Jerusalem. 00:43:39.98\00:43:41.82 And I want you to notice Acts 4:31. 00:43:41.85\00:43:44.35 Is there any reference to those who were present 00:43:59.03\00:44:01.30 receiving the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues? 00:44:01.34\00:44:05.24 No. 00:44:05.91\00:44:07.24 You say, "Why not?" 00:44:07.28\00:44:08.61 Because the feast of Pentecost had already passed. 00:44:08.64\00:44:10.98 All of the people had gone to their nations. 00:44:11.51\00:44:13.78 This was a group in the city of Jerusalem. 00:44:14.38\00:44:16.75 They did not need to speak tongues 00:44:17.22\00:44:19.22 because they lived in Jerusalem. 00:44:19.25\00:44:20.96 And so they received the power of the Holy Spirit, 00:44:21.29\00:44:24.03 but there's no record of them receiving the gift of tongues. 00:44:24.33\00:44:27.33 Now I want you to notice how the gift was poured out in Samaria. 00:44:27.76\00:44:30.80 Incidentally, was a language spoken in Samaria 00:44:31.00\00:44:36.10 which the Jews could speak? 00:44:36.14\00:44:38.21 Of course. 00:44:38.87\00:44:40.21 Do you remember when Jesus spoke to the Samaritan woman? 00:44:40.24\00:44:42.41 Could the Samaritan woman understand Jesus? 00:44:42.44\00:44:44.71 Of course. 00:44:44.75\00:44:46.08 The Samaritans understood the language. 00:44:46.11\00:44:47.95 They understood Aramaic. 00:44:47.98\00:44:49.42 So would you expect the gift of tongues to be poured out 00:44:49.88\00:44:52.59 in Samaria? 00:44:52.92\00:44:54.26 Absolutely not. 00:44:54.32\00:44:55.66 Notice Acts 8:14-17. 00:44:55.69\00:44:58.49 Any record of them receiving the gift of tongues 00:45:24.32\00:45:26.82 when they received the Holy Spirit? 00:45:26.86\00:45:28.22 It wasn't necessary, folks. 00:45:28.26\00:45:29.89 They were Samaritans. 00:45:30.13\00:45:31.59 They could speak in the language that people could understand. 00:45:31.93\00:45:36.36 And so it was not necessary to impart to them 00:45:36.40\00:45:39.33 the gift of tongues. 00:45:39.37\00:45:40.90 But then we go to Caesarea. 00:45:41.10\00:45:43.00 Do you remember the progression? 00:45:43.34\00:45:45.27 First Jerusalem, then Judea, then Samaria, 00:45:45.31\00:45:50.05 and then to the ends of the earth. 00:45:50.35\00:45:52.11 Now notice that the gift was also poured out in Caesarea. 00:45:52.48\00:45:55.35 That's where the apostles met Cornelius. 00:45:55.38\00:45:57.42 You remember the Cornelius experience? 00:45:57.45\00:45:59.25 Now I'm not going to go through all of the story. 00:45:59.89\00:46:03.02 You know, Peter had this dream or this vision three times 00:46:03.06\00:46:06.90 of the sheet coming down with the unclean animals. 00:46:07.16\00:46:09.33 And God said, "What I have called clean, 00:46:09.36\00:46:11.37 don't you call unclean." 00:46:11.40\00:46:12.83 Of course, that sheet of unclean animals 00:46:12.93\00:46:15.30 represented the Gentiles. 00:46:15.34\00:46:16.67 A little while later, three Gentiles come to his doorstep, 00:46:16.71\00:46:20.41 whom he considered to be unclean. 00:46:20.91\00:46:22.68 And so you have three times he receives the vision. 00:46:23.14\00:46:26.08 And then he has three unclean Gentiles at his doorstep. 00:46:26.35\00:46:29.42 Unclean in his mind, anyway. 00:46:29.45\00:46:31.15 And so I want you to notice what happens, 00:46:31.45\00:46:34.62 according to Acts 10:44-47. 00:46:34.66\00:46:39.79 This is in Caesarea. 00:46:48.87\00:46:50.21 Was this the same gift of the day of Pentecost? 00:47:03.39\00:47:05.85 Was it the same gift that God imparted 00:47:06.05\00:47:07.72 on the day of Pentecost? 00:47:07.76\00:47:09.09 The word, "also," indicates yes. 00:47:09.12\00:47:11.69 It's been poured out upon the Gentiles also. 00:47:12.56\00:47:17.07 Now notice what it continues saying in verse 46. 00:47:17.10\00:47:19.53 Was it the same gift that was imparted 00:47:36.65\00:47:38.65 on the day of Pentecost? 00:47:38.69\00:47:40.02 Absolutely. 00:47:40.06\00:47:41.39 So was the gift of tongues the same gift that was imparted 00:47:41.42\00:47:44.19 on the day of Pentecost? 00:47:44.23\00:47:45.56 Absolutely. 00:47:45.59\00:47:46.93 Now, I want you to notice verses 44... 00:47:47.36\00:47:50.33 Actually, we already read 44-47. 00:47:51.43\00:47:54.44 Let's read Acts 11:15-16. 00:47:54.47\00:47:57.34 Acts 11:15-16 00:47:57.54\00:47:59.27 Here, we're going to show that this was the same gift 00:47:59.37\00:48:03.38 that John the Baptist spoke about. 00:48:03.41\00:48:04.98 It says in Acts 11:15-16... 00:48:05.08\00:48:08.48 This is Peter. 00:48:11.85\00:48:13.19 He's explaining to the brethren in Jerusalem what had happened. 00:48:13.22\00:48:16.42 Is this the same gift as on the day of Pentecost? 00:48:22.76\00:48:25.00 It most certainly is. 00:48:25.03\00:48:26.37 Is it the same gift that John the Baptist spoke of? 00:48:37.38\00:48:39.88 Absolutely. 00:48:39.95\00:48:41.28 So are we dealing with a gift of tongues that is gibberish? 00:48:41.32\00:48:45.12 It's not gibberish at Caesarea. 00:48:45.89\00:48:48.06 It's not gibberish in Jerusalem. 00:48:48.09\00:48:50.39 John the Baptist was not speaking about gibberish. 00:48:50.93\00:48:54.50 They were speaking about languages that were previously 00:48:54.86\00:48:58.67 unknown to the preachers which God gave them the miraculous 00:48:58.70\00:49:02.70 and supernatural ability to speak. 00:49:02.90\00:49:05.74 Now Ellen White says in, Acts of the Apostles, page 139, 00:49:06.57\00:49:09.84 why the Holy Spirit and the gift of tongues 00:49:09.88\00:49:12.05 was given at Caesarea. 00:49:12.08\00:49:13.42 She says this... 00:49:13.88\00:49:15.22 Let me tell you a few things about Caesarea. 00:49:42.44\00:49:44.68 Caesarea was the most important port between Egypt and Tyre. 00:49:44.88\00:49:50.92 Egypt in the south and Tyre in the north. 00:49:51.02\00:49:53.32 People from all nations and languages and cultures 00:49:53.39\00:49:56.79 came through that port, Caesarea. 00:49:56.83\00:49:59.76 And God gave Cornelius and his family the ability 00:50:00.16\00:50:05.47 to speak in tongues so that they could share the gospel 00:50:05.50\00:50:09.00 with all of those language groups that came through the 00:50:09.04\00:50:12.07 port of Caesarea. 00:50:12.11\00:50:13.94 Are you with me or not? 00:50:13.98\00:50:15.31 Now, let's notice the gift that was imparted at Ephesus. 00:50:15.71\00:50:19.81 Acts 19:1-6 00:50:20.15\00:50:23.15 Now notice once again the reference to John the Baptist. 00:50:45.91\00:50:49.54 So is this the same gift that they're going to receive 00:51:06.90\00:51:10.00 that John the Baptist spoke about? 00:51:10.03\00:51:11.67 Absolutely. 00:51:11.93\00:51:13.27 Notice verse 5. 00:51:13.30\00:51:14.74 Why would the gift of tongues be given in the city of Ephesus? 00:51:29.15\00:51:33.19 Well, folks, Ephesus was one of the most important 00:51:33.72\00:51:36.79 trade centers on the continent of Asia. 00:51:36.83\00:51:39.66 Once again, people from every nation, kindred, tongue, 00:51:40.70\00:51:43.70 and people came through that most important trade center. 00:51:43.73\00:51:48.47 And it was necessary for these converts to proclaim the message 00:51:48.97\00:51:54.64 in the languages of the people that came through 00:51:54.68\00:51:57.58 that important city. 00:51:57.61\00:51:59.91 Ellen White explains in, Acts of the Apostles, page 283, 00:52:00.38\00:52:04.29 about this experience. 00:52:04.65\00:52:06.09 See, they're now accepting Christ as their Savior. 00:52:18.90\00:52:21.60 Now what's the purpose? 00:52:38.85\00:52:40.19 Would they need to know many languages in order 00:52:51.03\00:52:53.77 to reach out to those distances? 00:52:53.80\00:52:55.80 Absolutely. 00:52:55.84\00:52:57.17 So God says, "I'm going to give them the gift of tongues." 00:52:57.21\00:52:59.87 Now, there's one other place where we find in the book 00:53:01.74\00:53:04.61 of Acts where the gift of the Holy Spirit was given out. 00:53:04.65\00:53:07.65 And it's mentioned also in 1 Corinthians 12 through 14, 00:53:08.05\00:53:10.99 This will be our next study. 00:53:11.02\00:53:12.65 The gift of tongues was also poured out in Corinth. 00:53:13.15\00:53:18.19 Why in Corinth? 00:53:18.76\00:53:20.16 Well, Corinth was one of the busiest seaports in Europe. 00:53:20.56\00:53:25.03 Once again, people from every language group went through 00:53:25.37\00:53:30.11 this port in Corinth, in Europe. 00:53:30.14\00:53:33.11 It was a metropolis. 00:53:33.51\00:53:36.44 It was a cosmopolitan city where people from 00:53:36.48\00:53:39.98 every nation went through. 00:53:40.02\00:53:41.72 And so God saw that it was necessary to impart to the 00:53:41.98\00:53:46.86 church of Corinth the gift of the Holy Spirit 00:53:46.89\00:53:49.59 so that they could share the message with all of the 00:53:49.79\00:53:52.13 language groups that came through the city of Corinth. 00:53:52.16\00:53:56.87 Now I'd like to read you a very interesting statement 00:53:57.83\00:54:00.97 as we close about the latter rain. 00:54:01.00\00:54:04.57 You know, what's going to happen in the end time? 00:54:05.41\00:54:07.14 Do you think God is going to awaken once again 00:54:07.18\00:54:09.74 the gift of tongues at the end of time? 00:54:09.78\00:54:12.61 Do you think it's going to be as prevalent as existed 00:54:15.75\00:54:18.62 in the days of the apostles? 00:54:18.65\00:54:19.99 We have no way of knowing specifically. 00:54:20.02\00:54:22.09 However, it's possible. 00:54:23.32\00:54:25.63 You say, "Why don't you think it's going to be as prevalent?" 00:54:26.56\00:54:29.23 Well, because the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:54:29.80\00:54:31.97 has people who speak the languages of the nations 00:54:32.00\00:54:34.47 almost in every single nation on the planet. 00:54:34.50\00:54:36.71 You see, in Jerusalem and in Ephesus and in Corinth, 00:54:37.74\00:54:42.28 the work was just getting started. 00:54:42.31\00:54:44.21 But today, the message has gone worldwide. 00:54:45.48\00:54:48.22 And there are many local people who already speak the language 00:54:48.25\00:54:51.65 of the nations. 00:54:52.02\00:54:53.36 And so it's not as necessary as it was at the very beginning 00:54:53.39\00:54:56.96 of the preaching of the gospel. 00:54:56.99\00:54:58.33 But let me read you this closing statement. 00:54:58.36\00:55:00.10 Are you looking forward to that day? 00:55:11.64\00:55:13.07 Now I believe God will awaken the gift of tongues 00:55:44.21\00:55:46.44 if it is necessary. 00:55:46.47\00:55:47.88 Now what is the condition for receiving this gift? 00:55:49.34\00:55:51.98 I'd like to end this statement which we find in, 00:55:52.41\00:55:54.58 Review and Herald, July 20, 1886, 00:55:54.62\00:55:57.45 where Ellen White gives us the condition 00:55:57.92\00:56:00.89 that we need to meet in order to receive this gift 00:56:00.92\00:56:04.76 of speaking the Word of God with power. 00:56:04.79\00:56:06.73 She says, "May the Lord help His people to cleanse 00:56:06.76\00:56:11.00 the soul temple from every defilement, and to maintain 00:56:11.03\00:56:15.90 such a close connection with Him that they may be partakers 00:56:15.94\00:56:20.54 of the latter rain when it shall be poured out." 00:56:20.58\00:56:24.81 So there is a condition for receiving latter rain power 00:56:25.41\00:56:29.02 to preach the gospel as the apostles did 00:56:29.05\00:56:31.72 when the work started. 00:56:31.75\00:56:33.12 The purpose of the latter rain is to finish the work. 00:56:33.56\00:56:36.52 The purpose of the early rain and the gift of tongues 00:56:36.93\00:56:39.59 was to get the work started. 00:56:39.63\00:56:41.40 And so God, if necessary, will awaken once again 00:56:41.93\00:56:45.73 the gift of tongues. 00:56:45.77\00:56:47.10 But if not, He will have people in every nation 00:56:47.14\00:56:50.31 who will proclaim the wonderful news about Jesus 00:56:50.34\00:56:53.88 and His salvation. 00:56:53.98\00:56:55.94 Now you're saying, "What about Corinth? 00:56:56.68\00:56:58.51 What about the tongues in Corinth?" 00:56:58.55\00:57:00.22 That's a question people always have. 00:57:00.72\00:57:02.58 Was it gibberish or was it known languages? 00:57:02.82\00:57:05.72 Don't miss the next exciting episode where we will study 00:57:06.02\00:57:09.12 1 Corinthians 14. 00:57:09.16\00:57:10.53
