But before we do,
what do we want to do?

many delusions and deceptions

And we want to
know what Your will is,

and what really happened
on the day of Pentecost,

and for what purpose.

And so we ask
for divine guidance.

And we know that You

in the precious name of Jesus.

Six months before
Jesus began His ministry,

God called John the Baptist
to preach in the wilderness

to prepare the way for
the coming of the Messiah.

And the message that
John preached is found in

several gospels, but I
particularly want to read

the description of
his message as it is given

in Matthew 3:11.

And there are other verses that
present other aspects of his

message, but for our purposes
we're going to read verse 11.

John is speaking...

"...but He who is

That is Jesus the Messiah.

Now there are three items
that I want us to remember

find these three concepts

First of all, I want us to
remember the word, "baptize."

Because I want you to see
that what John the Baptist

was predicting was not
only the coming of the Messiah,

but He was predicting
what was going to take place

on the day of Pentecost.

These three concepts
that we find in this verse

have to do with
something that happened

on the day of Pentecost.

Baptize, Holy Spirit, and

that I want us to notice here.

So you notice, it speaks
about the suffering of Jesus

Remember those two concepts.

the key points that we find

we have these points clear,

little bit to what occurred

before the ascension of Christ,

Now I want you to
notice that John the Baptist

that the gift that was given

John the Baptist spoke about.

So there's a link
between John the Baptist

speaking about baptism,
and speaking about Holy Spirit,

and speaking about
fire, and what Jesus said

right before His ascension.

Now notice what we

two of the elements here.

elements that John the Baptist

Now let's summarize
what we find in Acts 1:4-5.

question, what was the purpose

of the outpouring
of the Holy Spirit

apostles a spiritual high?

Did it have the purpose of
showing that they were saved?

Was it a sign that, you
know, now they were saved

because they had the Holy Spirit
and they spoke in tongues?

Absolutely not.

The purpose of this
gift was to have power

to proclaim the message.

Beginning in Jerusalem,
and going to the nations.

In other words,
the task is evangelism.

And the Holy Spirit
is the power to fulfill

the evangelistic task.

I want you to notice
this very clearly in Acts 1:8.

Remember that this is the
same context of verses 4 and 5

Jesus is about to ascend.

In fact, in verse

Jesus ascends to heaven.

So the first thing we have is
that they're going to receive.

purpose of the power?

Now it's important for
us to realize that before

the Holy Spirit
could be poured out,

Jesus had to perform
certain works on earth

which needed to be proclaimed.

First of all, we've
studied that Jesus needed

to live a perfect life.

Because no human being
can offer the law perfection.

And the law requires perfection.

Secondly, Jesus had to
die for the sins of the world.

Because if He didn't
die, we would all have to die.

So in other words, Jesus
had to live a perfect life

and He had to die for
sin before the Holy Spirit

could be poured out in
power for the disciples

to proclaim the message.

Because the purpose of the
message was for the apostles

to say, and we're going
to see this in a few moments,

"Listen, Jesus lived
the perfect life that the

law requires from us.

And Jesus paid the debt for sin.

And if you repent and you
receive Jesus as your Savior,

you confess your sins,
then you will receive remission

or forgiveness of
sins through His name."

could not proclaim the message

with the power until Jesus had
performed what the message is.

outpouring of the Holy Spirit

His perfect life and dying

is that the Holy Spirit

to give them a spiritual high.

them for self-edification.

The purpose of the power was
so that they would be enabled

to preach that Jesus
had lived, Jesus had died,

He was the Intercessor in
heaven and you could come to Him

and claim what He did
while He was on earth.

That was the purpose of
the power of the Holy Spirit.

By the way, Jesus had
already announced this

Pentecost during His ministry.

not yet glorified."

glorified, when He ascended

the geographical extension

And so they were able to
speak with fluency the languages

of the different nations
that were represented there.

But now I want you
to notice Acts 2:12-13.

Once again, we're
told that those who were

present were bewildered.

And some of them
started giving an explanation.

In other words, "They're drunk,"
is what they were saying.

Now the apostle Peter,
when he heard these people say,

They've drunk too much.

And therefore, they're
just speaking gibberish,"

stood up and he says,

an explanation here."

And you find it
in verses 14 and 15.

the third hour of the day,

is nine o'clock in the morning.

In other words, this is a
fulfillment of Bible prophecy.

And so he actually quotes

and he's explaining
exactly what was happening

on earth at that time.

What was happening is
that the prophecy of Joel

was being fulfilled
before their very eyes.

And then Peter, after
using the passage of Joel

to explain what was
happening there on earth,

he began to tell the story
of Jesus, the different stages

of the story of Jesus.

He mentioned the life of
service that Jesus lived.

He mentioned the fact that
Jesus died, or Jesus was killed.

And then he speaks about the
resurrection of Jesus Christ.

So once again, it's His life,
His death, and His resurrection.

Notice what he's preaching.

to prove this from Scripture."

another passage to prove that

predicted that the Messiah

two prophecies once again.

Joel is going to be fulfilled,

because that's
speaking about Me.

Oh, and you need to remember
also the prophecy that we find

also Psalm 132:11 where it says

that the Messiah would
come from the loins of David."

And so Peter, on the
day of Pentecost, is using

all of this Scripture
from the Old Testament

to sustain his sermon.

In other words, it's a biblical
sermon that he's preaching.

entertaining the people.

truth about what Jesus is doing

So what we need to do
is that we need to repent,
