the gift of tongues,

of tongues will be given

We want to begin our
study in Genesis 1:28.

In the previous two
verses, verses 26 and 27,

God has created male and female.

And now He's going to give
Adam and Eve some instructions.

And those instructions
are found in verse 28

where it says this,
"Then God blessed them,
00:02:05.02\00:02:08.12
and God said to them,
'Be fruitful and multiply;
00:02:08.16\00:02:12.63
fill the earth and subdue
it; have dominion over the
00:02:13.03\00:02:17.27
fish of the sea,
over the birds of the air,
00:02:17.30\00:02:20.14
and over every living
thing that moves on the earth.'"

Now the particular
phrase that I want to focus on,
00:02:24.31\00:02:26.74
as we begin our
study, is where God said,
00:02:26.78\00:02:29.24
"fill the earth."
00:02:29.44\00:02:31.15
You see, it was not God's
plan that man should aggregate
00:02:31.45\00:02:34.98
in one location on the planet.
00:02:35.02\00:02:37.52
It was God's plan that
human beings spread out
00:02:37.75\00:02:42.09
over all of the earth
and populate the earth
00:02:42.12\00:02:44.93
in its entirety.
00:02:44.96\00:02:46.29
And we're going to
see that that's a very
00:02:46.33\00:02:47.83
important detail.
00:02:47.86\00:02:49.53
God's plan was that as
Adam and Eve should multiply
00:02:50.07\00:02:54.20
through procreation,
that you would have a race
00:02:54.40\00:02:58.11
of righteous people
populating the entire earth.
00:02:58.21\00:03:01.74
But as we know, sin
marred God's original plan.
00:03:02.08\00:03:06.28
Adam and Eve both
ate from the tree of the
00:03:06.72\00:03:09.98
knowledge of good and evil.
00:03:10.02\00:03:11.35
And as a result, the infection,
the virus of sin, penetrated
00:03:11.62\00:03:15.69
the human race.
00:03:15.72\00:03:17.06
And because of this,
the earth did begin to fill.
00:03:17.23\00:03:20.80
But it filled, not
with a righteous race,
00:03:21.06\00:03:24.03
but it filled with a
wicked and sinful race.
00:03:24.07\00:03:27.97
But there was good news.
00:03:28.07\00:03:29.57
And the good news was
that God promised to send
00:03:29.60\00:03:33.14
a Redeemer to the earth.
00:03:33.17\00:03:35.08
He promised to send the Messiah.
00:03:35.11\00:03:37.31
And we find that beautiful
promise very early in the Bible
00:03:37.55\00:03:41.38
in Genesis 3:15.
00:03:41.42\00:03:43.89
My favorite verse
in the whole Bible.
00:03:43.92\00:03:46.25
A while back I did a 52
part series just on Genesis,
00:03:46.55\00:03:49.92
all of the message of
God in the book of Genesis.
00:03:49.96\00:03:52.26
And this was the
central verse of our study.
00:03:52.43\00:03:55.30
And so I want
to read this verse.

It has several important
elements that I'm going to

underline as we begin our study.

Here, God is
speaking to the serpent.
00:04:03.00\00:04:05.44
And when I say, to the serpent,
I'm not talking about the snake.
00:04:05.47\00:04:08.31
I'm talking about the
devil who used the serpent
00:04:08.34\00:04:11.25
as his medium.
00:04:11.28\00:04:12.65
It says there in
Genesis 3:15, God is speaking...
00:04:13.01\00:04:16.18
And then what is going to
be the result of this enmity
00:04:30.57\00:04:33.44
or this battle between
the serpent and the woman,
00:04:33.47\00:04:36.87
and the serpent's
seed and the woman's seed?
00:04:36.91\00:04:39.31
There's no doubt
about what's going to happen
00:04:39.54\00:04:41.64
because the last
part of the verse says...
00:04:41.68\00:04:43.65
Other versions say,
"You shall bruise His heel,
00:04:48.55\00:04:52.02
and He shall crush your head."
00:04:52.05\00:04:55.26
Obviously, a wound in
the head is much more serious
00:04:55.76\00:04:58.86
than a wound in the heel.
00:04:58.89\00:05:00.23
God is saying, "I'm going to
send the Messiah to the world.
00:05:00.26\00:05:02.83
He's going to
do battle with you.
00:05:03.00\00:05:04.70
He's going to crush your head,
but you are going to wound Him.

You are going
to wound His heel."

Now I want us to
go to Genesis 3:21

where we have a description
of how God was going to
00:05:13.71\00:05:17.55
resolve the problem
through the Messiah.

We know that there
was going to be enmity,
00:05:19.65\00:05:21.22
but how was God going
to resolve the problem?
00:05:21.42\00:05:24.15
If you remember,
when Adam and Eve sinned
00:05:24.52\00:05:27.39
the first result of
their sin was that they
00:05:27.42\00:05:29.99
found themselves naked.
00:05:30.03\00:05:31.36
Right?
00:05:31.39\00:05:32.73
And they tried to cover
themselves with fig leaves.
00:05:32.76\00:05:35.53
Which means that they
tried to cover themselves
00:05:35.73\00:05:37.77
with their own righteousness.
00:05:37.80\00:05:39.13
They tried to cover
the nakedness of their sin
00:05:39.17\00:05:42.20
through their own righteousness.
00:05:42.50\00:05:44.21
But God did something very
interesting with Adam and Eve.

God showed them
that their nakedness,
00:05:48.14\00:05:50.45
that the nakedness of sin,
was not going to be covered
00:05:50.48\00:05:52.95
by garments made by them.
00:05:53.15\00:05:55.28
It was going to be
covered in a different way.

Genesis 3:21 explains
how the Messiah was going to

crush the serpents head.

He was going to
crush the serpents head

in a very strange way.

It says there in Genesis 3:21...

So notice here several details.

It says that God
made for Adam and Eve

tunics of skin,
and clothed them.
00:06:30.95\00:06:35.42
Now what needs to
happen in order for you

to get the skin of an animal?
00:06:38.19\00:06:39.59
You have to kill the
animal, that's right.
00:06:40.50\00:06:43.06
And so we find
here God's announcement
00:06:43.16\00:06:46.70
that a lamb, an
immaculate sinless lamb,
00:06:46.74\00:06:52.21
was going to be slain, and he
was going to cover in this way
00:06:52.24\00:06:56.95
the nakedness of man's sin.
00:06:56.98\00:06:59.38
And undoubtedly, Satan was
observing what was happening,
00:06:59.81\00:07:03.69
he was observing
this sacrifice and saying,
00:07:03.72\00:07:06.05
"Hmmm, sin caused nakedness.
00:07:06.09\00:07:09.42
And now this animal, this
lamb, immaculate lamb, is slain.
00:07:09.46\00:07:15.86
And God has taken the
skins of the lamb and He has
00:07:15.90\00:07:19.13
covered the
nakedness of Adam and Eve,
00:07:19.17\00:07:21.34
the nakedness of sin."
00:07:21.37\00:07:22.77
And so the devil is
now puzzling over how God
00:07:22.80\00:07:26.47
is going to resolve the
sin problem, specifically.
00:07:26.51\00:07:30.91
And so the devil very
soon, he's a quick learner,
00:07:31.41\00:07:34.58
he says, "I know now
what God is going to do.
00:07:34.62\00:07:37.85
He's going to send a Seed
to the world born of a woman,
00:07:38.09\00:07:42.32
and He is going to, through
this Seed born of the woman,
00:07:42.69\00:07:48.50
He's going to die.
00:07:49.16\00:07:50.50
He's going to live an immaculate
life and He's doing to die.
00:07:50.87\00:07:53.67
And in this way, the
nakedness of man's sin
00:07:53.70\00:07:56.94
is going to be covered."
00:07:57.07\00:07:59.07
And so the devil made
up his mind that he was not
00:07:59.17\00:08:01.94
going to allow the promise
of Genesis 3:15 to be fulfilled.
00:08:01.98\00:08:06.18
He said, "If I allow that
Seed to come, then the Seed
00:08:06.21\00:08:10.65
is going to crush my
head because He is going to
00:08:10.69\00:08:13.09
come and live a
perfect life in place of man.
00:08:13.12\00:08:15.72
And He's going to
die in place of man.
00:08:15.76\00:08:17.99
And I'm going
to lose my kingdom.
00:08:18.03\00:08:19.53
So I cannot allow that
Seed to come to the world."
00:08:19.56\00:08:23.60
And so the devil
implemented plan A.
00:08:23.87\00:08:26.47
And plan A was to
try and kill the Seed.
00:08:26.80\00:08:31.54
He said, "If I can kill
the Seed, then there will be
00:08:32.11\00:08:35.38
no salvation.
00:08:35.41\00:08:36.78
And of course, the first
fulfillment of Genesis 3:15
00:08:37.08\00:08:40.75
is in the story
of Cain and Abel.
00:08:40.78\00:08:43.39
It's in the very next chapter.
00:08:44.15\00:08:46.05
It's in chapter 4 of Genesis.
00:08:46.09\00:08:48.39
And there you see a development
of the theme of Genesis 3:15.

Do you remember
that in Genesis 3:15

we have enmity, right?
00:08:56.40\00:08:57.90
We have a woman, right?
00:08:58.30\00:08:59.93
We have a serpent.

We have a seed of the
serpent and a Seed of the woman.

Now do we have this in
the story of Cain and Abel?

We most certainly do.

Who is the woman?
00:09:11.05\00:09:12.38
The woman is Eve.
00:09:12.58\00:09:13.92
Is the serpent there?
00:09:14.08\00:09:15.58
Well, he's not overtly there,
but if you go to 1 John 3:12,
00:09:15.62\00:09:20.42
it says that Cain
was of the wicked one.
00:09:20.62\00:09:24.09
So that means that
there was someone behind Cain.
00:09:24.39\00:09:27.56
He was of the wicked one.
00:09:27.60\00:09:28.93
And so the serpent is involved.

Do you have a
righteous seed in this story?

Yes, it's Abel.

Do you have a
wicked seed of the serpent?

Yes, Cain.

And do you have
enmity in this story?

Absolutely.

All of the elements
of Genesis 3:15 are found

in the story of Cain and Abel.

You see, I believe that
the devil thought that perhaps
00:09:47.02\00:09:51.05
Abel was the promised Seed.
00:09:51.09\00:09:53.09
And he said, "If I
can wipe out this seed,
00:09:53.12\00:09:56.19
there will be no
plan of salvation."
00:09:56.22\00:09:58.99
And so he wiped him out.
00:10:00.30\00:10:01.80
But God did
something very interesting
00:10:02.60\00:10:04.63
after Cain killed Abel.
00:10:04.67\00:10:06.50
We find in Genesis
4:25 that God's plan
00:10:06.80\00:10:10.24
was not going to be frustrated.
00:10:10.27\00:10:11.91
It says there in Genesis 4:25...
00:10:12.07\00:10:14.24
And now she's going to
explain why she called him Seth.
00:10:20.05\00:10:23.55
You see, the devil
said, "Problem solved.
00:10:33.19\00:10:36.67
Abel is gone."
00:10:36.70\00:10:38.03
So God says, "I'll send
another seed born of the woman."
00:10:38.13\00:10:41.74
And so God sent Seth.
00:10:41.77\00:10:43.27
And soon the devil begins
to discover that God is not
00:10:43.30\00:10:48.34
introducing the Seed
into the world through
00:10:48.38\00:10:50.55
these preliminary seeds.
00:10:50.58\00:10:52.05
Soon the devil
realizes that what God is doing
00:10:52.31\00:10:55.22
is He's preserving a genealogy.
00:10:55.25\00:10:57.95
He's preserving a list
of righteous descendants
00:10:57.99\00:11:00.89
from which eventually
the Messiah will come.
00:11:00.92\00:11:03.86
So he says, "These
seeds, these preliminary seeds,
00:11:04.23\00:11:07.26
are not 'the' Seed.
00:11:07.30\00:11:08.80
These preliminary
seeds are a way in which God
00:11:08.83\00:11:11.97
eventually will introduce
the Messiah into the world."
00:11:12.00\00:11:15.37
And so the devil said,
"It does no good for me to
00:11:15.40\00:11:18.64
kill one seed, because
God raises up another seed.
00:11:18.67\00:11:21.64
And so there has to be a better
way of keeping this promise
00:11:21.68\00:11:25.31
from being fulfilled."
00:11:25.35\00:11:26.68
And so the devil goes to plan B.
00:11:27.08\00:11:29.02
And plan B was not
to kill these seeds,
00:11:29.98\00:11:35.79
but to mingle them, or to
mix or blend the two seeds
00:11:36.02\00:11:41.03
so that the righteous
seed would lose its identity.

In Genesis chapters 4 and
5 we have two genealogies.

In chapter 4 we have
the genealogy of Cain.
00:11:49.57\00:11:52.21
That's the list of
descendants of Cain.

And by the way, there are
three women, three wicked women,
00:11:53.98\00:11:56.68
mentioned in the
genealogy of Cain.
00:11:56.71\00:11:58.81
These are the
daughters of men, incidentally.
00:11:59.28\00:12:01.82
And then in Genesis 5 we have
the list of descendants of Seth.
00:12:02.15\00:12:06.69
And then in chapter 6, at the
very beginning of the chapter,
00:12:07.49\00:12:10.46
we have the sons of God
and the daughters of men.
00:12:10.66\00:12:14.50
So in context, the sons of
God are the descendants of Seth
00:12:14.90\00:12:19.67
who continues
the righteous seed.
00:12:19.70\00:12:21.60
And the daughters of men
are the women that are mentioned
00:12:21.90\00:12:24.77
in the genealogy of Cain.
00:12:24.81\00:12:26.71
They are of the wicked.

And so the devil says, "What
I need to do is I need to mingle
00:12:29.04\00:12:32.51
these two seeds so that the
righteous seed is swallowed up
00:12:32.55\00:12:36.22
by the wicked seed so
that the righteous seed
00:12:36.25\00:12:38.29
disappears from the earth."

Let's go to Genesis 6:1-2,
and then we'll jump to verse 5.

And you'll notice
how the devil's plan

really was quite successful.

but quite successful.

It says there in Genesis 6:1...

Remember, in context,
the sons of God are the

descendants of Seth;
of the righteous seed.

It says, "...the sons of
God saw the daughters of men..."

The daughters of men are the
women in the genealogy of Cain.

Let me ask you something.

Do you think that all the
daughters of God were ugly?

Do you think there
were also daughters of God?
00:13:26.43\00:13:28.57
Of course there
were daughters of God.

So why did the sons of God
think that the daughters of men
00:13:30.51\00:13:34.88
were so beautiful
and the daughters of God
00:13:34.91\00:13:36.98
weren't so beautiful?
00:13:37.01\00:13:38.35
There must have been
something external that the
00:13:38.38\00:13:41.88
daughters of men had that the
daughters of God did not have.
00:13:41.92\00:13:45.25
And if you read the
writings of the rabbis, they say
00:13:45.55\00:13:48.52
that the women
before the flood ran around
00:13:48.72\00:13:50.96
with nakedness of flesh and
they ran around with jewelry
00:13:51.09\00:13:54.26
and make-up on their faces.
00:13:54.30\00:13:56.13
That's what attracted the
attention of the sons of God.
00:13:56.30\00:14:00.67
They said, "Oh, these
daughters of God, they're blah.
00:14:00.70\00:14:05.24
But look at these daughters
of men, how beautiful they are."
00:14:05.47\00:14:08.88
But it was artificial beauty,
because it was external beauty.
00:14:08.91\00:14:12.05
And so what the devil
does is he intermingles
00:14:12.25\00:14:16.58
the righteous with the wicked,
00:14:16.62\00:14:18.19
the righteous seed so
that the righteous seed
00:14:18.22\00:14:20.19
will disappear from the earth.
00:14:20.22\00:14:21.82
In fact, notice what
we find in Genesis 6:5;
00:14:22.59\00:14:26.23
what the result
of this mingling was.
00:14:26.26\00:14:28.46
Was his plan quite successful
in mingling the two seeds?
00:14:38.94\00:14:42.61
It most certainly was.
00:14:42.71\00:14:44.31
In fact, not only were
the thoughts of his heart
00:14:44.48\00:14:48.65
only evil continually,
but those thoughts were
00:14:48.68\00:14:51.25
manifested in action.

Notice verses 11
and 12 of Genesis 6.
00:14:52.75\00:14:56.16
That was the result of
mingling the two seeds.

And you know what's interesting?

There's no doubt
whatsoever that before the flood
00:15:17.35\00:15:20.48
there must have
been millions of people
00:15:20.72\00:15:23.12
who lived upon this planet.
00:15:23.15\00:15:24.82
Between creation and the flood,
a period of 1656 years went by.
00:15:24.85\00:15:31.53
In a world where there was no
scarcity of natural resources,
00:15:31.79\00:15:34.86
in a world where there
was very little disease,
00:15:35.26\00:15:37.77
and in a world where men lived
to be almost 1000 years old.
00:15:37.80\00:15:42.00
How many children can
a 969 year old man have?
00:15:42.04\00:15:47.31
Folks, you know, when
they were 300, they were just
00:15:47.41\00:15:51.05
coming out of their teen years.
00:15:51.41\00:15:53.72
I mean, there's no doubt
whatsoever that there were
00:15:54.22\00:15:57.79
millions of
people on planet earth.
00:15:57.82\00:15:59.59
But the sobering fact
is that the Bible tells us
00:15:59.95\00:16:03.79
that only eight people
were left righteous before God.
00:16:03.83\00:16:08.30
In fact, it says that Noah was
righteous in the sight of God.
00:16:08.33\00:16:12.20
If God had not cut this
short, the entire human race
00:16:12.53\00:16:16.71
would have been demoralized
and God would not have had
00:16:16.74\00:16:19.71
anyone through whom to
bring the promised Messiah
00:16:19.74\00:16:22.81
into the world, because He
had to come from a holy line.
00:16:22.84\00:16:25.61
And so God said, "I am
going to cleanse the earth.
00:16:26.05\00:16:29.28
I'm going to wipe all of
the wickedness from the earth
00:16:29.32\00:16:32.59
so that we can start
all over again with Noah,
00:16:32.62\00:16:35.76
the righteous man."
00:16:35.79\00:16:37.13
And so God sent the flood and
wiped out the entire human race.
00:16:37.16\00:16:41.16
And Noah was the one who was
left to continue the holy line.

And so Noah and his
family come out of the ark.

And I want you to notice
what God told Noah to do.

Genesis 9:1 tells us
that God gave instructions

to Noah and his family.
00:16:57.81\00:16:59.15
In other words, God
is saying once again,

"Folks, don't
conglomerate in one place.
00:17:10.56\00:17:13.63
Spread out over all the earth."

Because God doesn't
want man to draw together,
00:17:16.46\00:17:19.53
to conglomerate,
because that centralizes
00:17:19.63\00:17:23.37
apostasy against Him.
00:17:23.81\00:17:25.84
But you know, as early as
200 years after the flood,
00:17:26.37\00:17:29.68
men were up to the same
thing that they were up to
00:17:30.61\00:17:33.11
before the flood.
00:17:33.15\00:17:34.48
They had proliferated and
they had filled the earth,
00:17:34.88\00:17:39.19
yes, but with a wicked race.
00:17:39.22\00:17:41.69
And they came to the
point where they said,

"You know, we really
should not be spread out
00:17:44.06\00:17:46.83
over all of the earth.
00:17:46.86\00:17:48.20
We really should
build a city and a tower,
00:17:48.36\00:17:51.27
and we should all gather
together and form a capital,
00:17:51.30\00:17:55.24
a metropolis, for the world.
00:17:55.27\00:17:57.24
And so they all
gathered together in one place
00:17:57.61\00:18:00.48
with the intention
of consolidating evil,
00:18:00.51\00:18:03.65
centralizing evil,
all on the same page.
00:18:04.18\00:18:08.35
And so God said,
"This is not going to work."
00:18:08.68\00:18:10.95
And so we have the
tower of Babel episode.

Let's read about
it in Genesis 11:6-8.

of Sheba had heard about

the prosperity of Israel.

She had heard about the
righteous reign of King Solomon.

And she said, "I have to
go have an interview with him

because I have to
see what the secret

of the prosperity of Israel is."

And so she took a trip to Israel
to interview King Solomon.

captivity cured Israel

of idolatry and of
intermingling with the nations.

But then Israel shut herself
up and she considered herself

better than everybody else.

And she isolated
herself from the nations.

And so Israel, to a
great degree, failed to fulfill

God's plan of letting
people know what the secret

of Israel's prosperity
was and about the coming

The Bible says that
Jesus came to His own

received Him not.

They were totally unprepared
to receive the Messiah.

that I must fulfill.

fulfill My plan completely,

And so Jesus came and He
fulfilled what was announced

we have this immaculate lamb

then the lamb was slain?

covered the nakedness of man.

that the true Lamb of God

was going to come to the world.

to live a perfect life

as the immaculate Lamb.

And He was going to die
for the sins of the world.

And through His righteousness
He was going to cover

the sinfulness of man's nature.

And so Jesus came and He
faced the devil's temptations.

And He never failed even once.

He lived a perfect life.

He was a
spotless immaculate Lamb.

And then Jesus went
to the cross and He died.

for Jesus to have lived His life

would share how the Messiah

save the human race,

now Jesus says, "The plan
is not for the nations to come,

the plan is for you to go."

has a specific purpose.

It's focused on evangelism.

But there was a deep problem.

disciples that Jesus established

could speak only one language.

So how could they go to Corinth
and Ephesus and to other nations

How could they
proclaim the gospel?

You see, Babel
created a serious problem.

Because the purpose
of Babel was not to allow

evil to consolidate.

But in confusing the languages,
God made it apparently

very difficult for the
gospel to go to the world.

Because the nucleus
of His followers spoke

probably only Aramaic.
00:33:29.10\00:33:30.94
And so Babel created a problem.

But for God,
there are no problems.

And so God says, "I
know what I'm going to do.

I'm going to undo Babel.

I am going to undo
what happened at Babel.

And what I'm going to do is,
I'm going to give the same gift

the disciples, to My apostles.

But the purpose
is not to confuse.

that they can go to the nations

God gave the gift of tongues.

talk about the gift of tongues

can get a real spiritual high."

don't speak in tongues,

you don't have the Holy Spirit."

you don't speak in tongues,

And so people have a
guilt trip because they're not

able to speak in tongues.

And they do
everything; even they suggest

to themselves, work
themselves into a frenzy,

in order to be able
to speak in tongues.

Because the idea is, if
you don't speak in tongues,

you can't be saved.

But the tongues that
they're talking about

are not languages.

They are words that are
spoken nowhere on planet earth.

But the purpose of the gift of
tongues, folks, was not to edify

The purpose of tongues was
practical, it was evangelistic.

the ability to go to the nations

were spoken in those nations.

Now God, in His providence,
made this happen at Pentecost.

room God gave the disciples
