If a man dies shall he leave again? 00:00:01.71\00:00:07.14 What does it mean to be absent 00:00:07.17\00:00:09.01 from the body and present with the Lord? 00:00:09.04\00:00:13.44 Did Jesus go with the thief to Paradise on Good Friday? 00:00:13.47\00:00:19.71 Did the souls of dead people 00:00:19.74\00:00:21.47 really cry out from below the altar? 00:00:21.50\00:00:25.64 Pastor Bohr answers these questions 00:00:25.67\00:00:27.52 and more in the amazing series. 00:00:27.55\00:00:35.23 Shall we bow our heads for prayer? 00:00:35.26\00:00:38.42 Father in Heaven, we thank You so much 00:00:38.45\00:00:42.27 for the awesome privilege of being here today. 00:00:42.30\00:00:46.02 We thank You Father, for Your Holy Sprit 00:00:46.05\00:00:48.59 and we ask that as we study the concluding message 00:00:48.62\00:00:53.52 on the State of the Dead, that Your Holy Sprit 00:00:53.55\00:00:55.38 will guide our thoughts and soften our hearts 00:00:55.41\00:00:58.47 that we might be able to hear Your voice. 00:00:58.50\00:01:02.00 I ask Father, that You will take away 00:01:02.03\00:01:04.00 all preconceived ideas and you will help us 00:01:04.03\00:01:07.25 to see truth as it is in Jesus. 00:01:07.28\00:01:10.36 And we thank You Father, for hearing and answering 00:01:10.39\00:01:12.74 our prayer for we ask it in Jesus name, Amen. 00:01:12.77\00:01:19.12 The title of our study for today is, 00:01:19.15\00:01:21.38 "Immortality of the Soul or Resurrection of the Dead." 00:01:21.41\00:01:27.33 And little bit later on I'm going to explain 00:01:27.36\00:01:29.79 to you reason why I gave this lecture 00:01:29.82\00:01:32.84 this particular title, I'd like to begin 00:01:32.87\00:01:36.29 by inviting you to turn in your Bibles 00:01:36.32\00:01:38.41 with me to Genesis 1:5. 00:01:38.44\00:01:41.63 And as you're looking for Genesis 1:5 allow me to say 00:01:41.66\00:01:45.60 that the Book of Genesis makes it very, very clear 00:01:45.63\00:01:49.45 that God created time and matter. 00:01:49.48\00:01:56.43 God is the originator of time and matter. 00:01:56.46\00:02:01.66 Now notice Genesis 1:5 where time is spoken of. 00:02:01.69\00:02:06.86 God creating time with respect to this earth. 00:02:06.89\00:02:10.46 It says there "God called the light Day, 00:02:10.49\00:02:15.03 and the darkness he called Night. 00:02:15.06\00:02:18.77 So the evening and the morning were the first day." 00:02:18.80\00:02:22.62 So you see God made the day of 24 hours, 00:02:22.65\00:02:25.70 the day that is composed of the light portion 00:02:25.73\00:02:29.50 which is called day and the dark portion which is called night. 00:02:29.53\00:02:34.25 God was the creator of time. 00:02:34.28\00:02:37.87 Let's notice another text in Genesis Chapter 1 00:02:37.90\00:02:41.58 where we are told that the different time 00:02:41.61\00:02:44.08 measurements were created by God. 00:02:44.11\00:02:46.46 Genesis 1:14 it says here, 00:02:46.49\00:02:54.45 "Then God said, 'Let there be lights in the firmament 00:02:54.48\00:02:58.79 of the heavens to divide the day from the night, 00:02:58.82\00:03:04.25 and let them be for sings and seasons 00:03:04.28\00:03:08.40 and for days and years.'" 00:03:08.43\00:03:12.30 So you'll notice that God created the time measurements. 00:03:12.33\00:03:16.58 Days, years, seasons. 00:03:16.61\00:03:20.62 In other words time measurements were created by God, 00:03:20.65\00:03:24.30 God is the originator of time. 00:03:24.33\00:03:27.06 You're gonna see why I'm emphasizing 00:03:27.09\00:03:29.13 this so strongly as we begin our study. 00:03:29.16\00:03:33.37 Now there's another thing which is very clear 00:03:33.40\00:03:36.03 in the first two chapters of Genesis 00:03:36.06\00:03:38.72 and that is that God also was the creator 00:03:38.75\00:03:42.25 of matters--of matter, material substance. 00:03:42.28\00:03:46.32 Notice Genesis 2:7, were its speaking 00:03:46.35\00:03:49.67 about the origin of man. 00:03:49.70\00:03:51.54 And by the way I could also verses 00:03:51.57\00:03:53.97 where the creation of tree 00:03:54.00\00:03:56.01 and where the creation of animals are mentioned. 00:03:56.04\00:03:59.08 Those are the things composed of material substance 00:03:59.11\00:04:04.77 but I'm only gonna read about man and woman. 00:04:04.80\00:04:07.97 Genesis 2:7, "And the Lord God 00:04:08.00\00:04:12.01 formed man of the dust of the ground, 00:04:12.04\00:04:15.52 and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, 00:04:15.55\00:04:18.82 and man became a living being." 00:04:18.85\00:04:22.27 So what is man composed of? Dust. 00:04:22.30\00:04:25.89 Who created man? 00:04:25.92\00:04:27.55 God created man. 00:04:27.58\00:04:29.07 So did God use matter to create man? 00:04:29.10\00:04:32.36 He most certainly did. 00:04:32.39\00:04:34.40 Notice about the creation of woman 00:04:34.43\00:04:36.71 in Genesis 2:21, 23, Genesis 2:21, 23. 00:04:36.74\00:04:44.60 It says there, "And the Lord God 00:04:44.63\00:04:47.71 caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, 00:04:47.74\00:04:50.77 and he slept, and He took one of his ribs, 00:04:50.80\00:04:55.13 and closed up the" notice, "flesh in its place. 00:04:55.16\00:05:00.24 Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man 00:05:00.27\00:05:05.06 He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. 00:05:05.09\00:05:09.80 And Adam said: 'This is now bone of my bones 00:05:09.83\00:05:14.61 And flesh of my flesh. 00:05:14.64\00:05:18.17 She shall be called Woman, 00:05:18.20\00:05:19.87 because she was taken out of Man.'" 00:05:19.90\00:05:22.87 Did Adam and Eve both have flesh and bones? 00:05:22.90\00:05:28.58 Yes, the Bible tells us that Adam was made of dust. 00:05:28.61\00:05:32.88 So a very important aspect of the story 00:05:32.91\00:05:37.07 of creation in Genesis 1 is that God was the creator 00:05:37.10\00:05:41.95 of both time and material substance. 00:05:41.98\00:05:47.19 Now I want to read the conclusion 00:05:47.22\00:05:49.45 of the creation story in Genesis 1:31. 00:05:49.48\00:05:53.76 Genesis 1:31 you see God not only made time and matter 00:05:53.79\00:05:58.06 but the Bible tells us that what God made 00:05:58.09\00:06:01.04 was not only good but was very good. 00:06:01.07\00:06:05.91 Notice Genesis 1:31, "Then God saw everything 00:06:05.94\00:06:11.19 that He had made, and indeed it was" what? 00:06:11.22\00:06:16.62 "Very good. So the evening 00:06:16.65\00:06:20.17 and the morning were the sixth day." 00:06:20.20\00:06:23.11 So let me ask you, is time good? 00:06:23.14\00:06:26.82 Obviously, yes. 00:06:26.85\00:06:28.35 Is matter good? 00:06:28.38\00:06:31.21 Absolutely, because God created both 00:06:31.24\00:06:34.66 and we're told in the creation story that what God made 00:06:34.69\00:06:38.75 during the six days of creation was not only good but very good. 00:06:38.78\00:06:44.34 Time and matter are very good. 00:06:44.37\00:06:47.24 However God had said that in order for man 00:06:47.27\00:06:52.93 continue living, in order for time 00:06:52.96\00:06:57.69 not to deteriorate and degenerate matter 00:06:57.72\00:07:02.03 it was necessary for man to continue eating 00:07:02.06\00:07:05.75 from the tree that God put 00:07:05.78\00:07:07.00 in the garden-- from the tree of life. 00:07:07.03\00:07:09.89 And we're also told that man could not eat 00:07:09.92\00:07:13.20 from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 00:07:13.23\00:07:16.08 Let's read first of all about the tree 00:07:16.11\00:07:18.06 of the knowledge of good and evil. 00:07:18.09\00:07:19.63 Genesis 2:16, 17. Genesis 2:16, 17, 00:07:19.66\00:07:26.67 "And the Lord God commanded the man, 00:07:26.70\00:07:29.22 saying, 'Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat 00:07:29.25\00:07:34.06 but of the tree of the knowledge 00:07:34.09\00:07:36.49 of good and evil you shall not eat, 00:07:36.52\00:07:39.07 for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.'" 00:07:39.10\00:07:45.66 The sentence was pronounced the very day 00:07:45.69\00:07:48.77 that Adam and Eve ate from the tree. 00:07:48.80\00:07:51.49 God said, "The day you eat of it that day you will die." 00:07:51.52\00:07:57.36 So God placed a condition. 00:07:57.39\00:07:59.29 He said if you want to continue living 00:07:59.32\00:08:02.33 forever you have to abstain from eating 00:08:02.36\00:08:06.54 from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. 00:08:06.57\00:08:09.91 Now the question is did Adam and Eve eat from the knowledge 00:08:09.94\00:08:13.34 of--tree of knowledge of good and evil? 00:08:13.37\00:08:15.57 Of course, we all know that they did. 00:08:15.60\00:08:17.45 Let's read about it in Genesis 3:6. 00:08:17.48\00:08:21.15 Genesis 3:6 and most of it is review for us 00:08:21.18\00:08:24.29 but we're setting the stage for something very important 00:08:24.32\00:08:27.87 that you're gonna notice in a few moments. 00:08:27.90\00:08:29.70 Genesis 3:6, "So when the woman saw 00:08:29.73\00:08:33.52 that the tree was good for food, 00:08:33.55\00:08:35.74 that it was pleasant to the eyes, 00:08:35.77\00:08:37.74 and a tree desirable to make one wise, 00:08:37.77\00:08:40.67 she took of its fruit and ate. 00:08:40.70\00:08:43.52 She also gave to her husband with her," and he what? 00:08:43.55\00:08:48.76 "And he ate." Let me ask you 00:08:48.79\00:08:51.06 were they now under the sentence of death? 00:08:51.09\00:08:54.73 They most certainly were. 00:08:54.76\00:08:56.32 By the way they had to continue eating from the tree of life. 00:08:56.35\00:08:59.56 In our first lecture of this series we studied 00:08:59.59\00:09:01.58 about the tree of life and we notice 00:09:01.61\00:09:03.64 that it wasn't enough for them to eat just once. 00:09:03.67\00:09:06.34 They had to continue eating from the tree 00:09:06.37\00:09:09.41 on regular basis because it was like a battery charger. 00:09:09.44\00:09:13.82 But the Bible tells us that when they ate 00:09:13.85\00:09:15.83 from the tree of the knowledge 00:09:15.86\00:09:17.23 of good and evil they we bared 00:09:17.26\00:09:19.67 from eating of the tree of life. 00:09:19.70\00:09:21.12 And as a result the matter which they had degenerated 00:09:21.15\00:09:26.02 deteriorated, got old, got wrinkled and ultimately 00:09:26.05\00:09:31.01 what happened to it? It died. 00:09:31.04\00:09:34.28 Notice Genesis 2:22-24 on the importance of partaking 00:09:34.31\00:09:39.03 of the tree of life in order to continue 00:09:39.06\00:09:41.63 living a full and abundant life. 00:09:41.66\00:09:43.82 It says, "Then the Lord God said, 00:09:43.85\00:09:45.69 'Behold, the man has become like one of Us, 00:09:45.72\00:09:47.85 to know good and evil. 00:09:47.88\00:09:49.24 And now, lest he put out his hand 00:09:49.27\00:09:51.74 and take also of the tree of life, 00:09:51.77\00:09:53.86 and eat, and live forever.' 00:09:53.89\00:09:55.26 Therefore the Lord God sent him out 00:09:55.29\00:09:58.05 of the Garden of Eden to till the ground from 00:09:58.08\00:10:00.36 which he was taken. 00:10:00.39\00:10:01.67 So He drove out the man, and He placed cherubim 00:10:01.70\00:10:05.03 at the east of the Garden of Eden, 00:10:05.06\00:10:06.68 and a flaming sword which turned every way, 00:10:06.71\00:10:09.56 to guard the way to the tree of life." 00:10:09.59\00:10:16.52 Let me ask you then was man now going to degenerated 00:10:16.55\00:10:21.69 and deteriorate until the moment of death 00:10:21.72\00:10:26.41 because he ate from the forbidden tree 00:10:26.44\00:10:28.80 and he could not eat from the tree of life? 00:10:28.83\00:10:32.15 Yes, he was gonna degenerated and he was going to die. 00:10:32.18\00:10:36.26 Would that have happened if Adam and Eve 00:10:36.29\00:10:38.31 had chosen not to eat from the tree of knowledge 00:10:38.34\00:10:40.75 good and evil and if they continued 00:10:40.78\00:10:42.65 eating from the tree of life? 00:10:42.68\00:10:44.04 No. time would not have 00:10:44.07\00:10:46.44 deteriorated matter, matter would have continually 00:10:46.47\00:10:50.33 have been regenerated and renewed 00:10:50.36\00:10:53.23 by eating from the tree of life. 00:10:53.26\00:10:55.48 But the Bible tells us that because of sin 00:10:55.51\00:10:58.47 now time acted upon matter and as time 00:10:58.50\00:11:03.43 passed matter deteriorated, wrinkled, 00:11:03.46\00:11:07.69 became sick and ultimately died. 00:11:07.72\00:11:11.23 Notice Romans 5:12 tells us very clearly 00:11:11.26\00:11:14.88 that the reason why death came 00:11:14.91\00:11:18.34 into the world was because of sin. 00:11:18.37\00:11:20.76 It's not because time and matter were evil. 00:11:20.79\00:11:24.67 The reason why is because sin acted 00:11:24.70\00:11:27.83 now upon time and matter and as result degeneration 00:11:27.86\00:11:31.87 came and ultimately death. 00:11:31.90\00:11:34.32 Romans 5:12 says, "Therefore, just as through 00:11:34.35\00:11:37.62 one man sin entered the world, 00:11:37.65\00:11:40.47 and death through sin, and thus death spread 00:11:40.50\00:11:45.06 to all men, because all" what? 00:11:45.09\00:11:48.00 "Because all sinned." 00:11:48.03\00:11:50.14 And of course in the next chapter 00:11:50.17\00:11:51.99 we find that famous verse for the wages of sin is what? 00:11:52.02\00:11:57.52 Death. Now there is an undeniable fact of life 00:11:57.55\00:12:02.25 as we know it in this world now and that is that with 00:12:02.28\00:12:06.49 the passing of time matter 00:12:06.52\00:12:10.44 deteriorates and begins to ruin. 00:12:10.47\00:12:16.71 In other words as time passes by the human body 00:12:16.74\00:12:21.83 begins to wrinkle, the human body gets old, 00:12:21.86\00:12:27.38 the human body gets sick and ultimately 00:12:27.41\00:12:30.72 the human body what? Dies. 00:12:30.75\00:12:34.54 Let me ask you, was that the original plan of God? 00:12:34.57\00:12:38.01 Absolutely not. 00:12:38.04\00:12:39.89 The original plan was that man 00:12:39.92\00:12:41.75 should live for ever and by eating 00:12:41.78\00:12:44.13 from the tree of life matter would regenerate and rejuvenate 00:12:44.16\00:12:49.67 on a consistent basis and man will be filled 00:12:49.70\00:12:52.76 with joy and happiness forever. 00:12:52.79\00:12:55.79 That was God's plan. 00:12:55.82\00:12:57.44 But then sin came into the equation. 00:12:57.47\00:12:59.71 And because of sin--this is very important--because 00:12:59.74\00:13:02.75 of sin time acts upon matter and matter 00:13:02.78\00:13:07.69 deteriorates and degenerates. 00:13:07.72\00:13:12.30 Now allow me to talk a little bit about the believes 00:13:12.33\00:13:16.43 of the Greek philosophers, philosophers 00:13:16.46\00:13:19.95 such as Socrates and Plato. 00:13:19.98\00:13:23.57 You see the Greek Philosophers 00:13:23.60\00:13:25.42 had no special revelation from God. 00:13:25.45\00:13:27.83 They did not have the Bible but they were keen observers 00:13:27.86\00:13:34.11 and they could see that with the passing of time 00:13:34.14\00:13:37.99 the body wrinkled, the body got sick, 00:13:38.02\00:13:43.82 the body got old and the body eventually died. 00:13:43.85\00:13:49.42 And they could see that time acting 00:13:49.45\00:13:52.08 upon matter degenerated the material body 00:13:52.11\00:13:55.74 and eventually lead to death. 00:13:55.77\00:13:58.78 They also observed something else 00:13:58.81\00:14:01.52 and that is that the body was the source 00:14:01.55\00:14:05.58 of all types of evil passions as well as virtues. 00:14:05.61\00:14:11.99 You know, they saw that the body would lead 00:14:12.02\00:14:14.51 to all kind's basest crimes and the basest immorality. 00:14:14.54\00:14:19.85 And so basically the Greek philosophers 00:14:19.88\00:14:22.59 concluded that time was evil and matter was evil. 00:14:22.62\00:14:30.01 And if some how man could escape the realm of time 00:14:30.04\00:14:37.00 into timelessness and man could escape the realm of matter 00:14:37.03\00:14:42.08 to realm where there is no matter--as a result 00:14:42.11\00:14:47.17 you would not have these conflicting base passions 00:14:47.20\00:14:51.93 and of course time would not act upon matter 00:14:51.96\00:14:55.25 and man would not get old and he would not die. 00:14:55.28\00:15:00.33 Allow me to read you some statements 00:15:00.36\00:15:02.34 from certain Greek philosophers 00:15:02.37\00:15:04.30 so that you can see the problem that they had, 00:15:04.33\00:15:08.22 the conflict that they had as they observed 00:15:08.25\00:15:11.50 the behavior of man, the bodily functions of man. 00:15:11.53\00:15:15.43 You know, most of the sins are sins of the flesh so called. 00:15:15.46\00:15:19.17 They could see these sins of the flesh. 00:15:19.20\00:15:21.04 They said, it's because the body is evil 00:15:21.07\00:15:23.09 and because time acts upon the body. 00:15:23.12\00:15:26.74 For example, Ovid once said, "I see the better things, 00:15:26.77\00:15:33.35 and I agree with them, but I follow the worse." 00:15:33.38\00:15:39.52 Seneca that great Roman writer said, 00:15:39.56\00:15:45.20 "Men love and hate their vices at the same time." 00:15:45.23\00:15:51.61 Sounds similar to what the Apostle Paul 00:15:51.64\00:15:53.50 said in Romans 7:19 where he says, 00:15:53.53\00:15:56.13 "For the good that I would to do, I do not, 00:15:56.16\00:15:58.88 but the evil which I would not do that I do." 00:15:58.91\00:16:03.72 And then in Romans 7:20 the Apostle says, 00:16:03.75\00:16:07.80 "Now if I do what I would not, it is no more I that do it, 00:16:07.83\00:16:12.64 but sin that dwelleth in me." 00:16:12.67\00:16:15.43 So they could see this controversy, 00:16:15.46\00:16:17.39 this conflict between virtue and vice. 00:16:17.42\00:16:21.35 And they said, if we could get out 00:16:21.38\00:16:23.35 of the realm of time and matter there would no longer 00:16:23.38\00:16:26.63 be any vice because there would no longer be any body 00:16:26.66\00:16:29.89 and there would be no longer time. 00:16:29.92\00:16:31.63 So there ideal was to escape time and to escape matter. 00:16:31.66\00:16:36.41 By the way the wisdom of Salmon also stated 00:16:36.44\00:16:40.15 "A perishable body weighs down the soul 00:16:40.18\00:16:43.90 and this earthly tent burdens the thoughtful mind." 00:16:43.93\00:16:51.66 Now how did the Greek philosophers 00:16:51.69\00:16:54.74 resolve this problem? 00:16:54.77\00:16:56.47 How did they see man escaping the realm of time 00:16:56.50\00:17:01.50 and the realm of matter to be able to enter a realm 00:17:01.53\00:17:05.86 where there is no time and no matter 00:17:05.89\00:17:07.94 and therefore no death? 00:17:07.97\00:17:10.49 They reached the conclusion that man 00:17:10.52\00:17:14.06 had within himself an immortal soul that was timeless 00:17:14.09\00:17:21.78 and that was not linked in any way with the body. 00:17:21.81\00:17:26.45 In fact they came to the conclusion that time 00:17:26.48\00:17:30.14 was evil and that the material body was evil. 00:17:30.17\00:17:34.07 Allow me to read you some statements 00:17:34.10\00:17:36.30 from great thinkers who had this concept. 00:17:36.33\00:17:40.54 By the way there was an orphic jingle back in ancient times 00:17:40.57\00:17:46.29 that went like this "soma-sema." 00:17:46.32\00:17:51.15 By the way that means in Greek the body 00:17:51.18\00:17:54.28 is a sepulcher, the body is tomb. 00:17:54.31\00:17:58.30 You know, there was a jingle 00:17:58.33\00:17:59.41 that they constantly used. 00:17:59.44\00:18:01.27 For example, Epictetus, a great philosopher said 00:18:01.30\00:18:05.70 "I am ashamed to have a body 00:18:05.73\00:18:08.74 I am a poor soul shackled to a corpse." 00:18:08.77\00:18:14.25 Marcus Aurelius said this, "Disdain the flesh: 00:18:14.28\00:18:20.03 blood and bones and network, 00:18:20.06\00:18:23.49 a twisted skein of nerves, veins, arteries." 00:18:23.52\00:18:27.94 Then he says, I wish I didn't have 00:18:27.97\00:18:29.65 any of these physical characteristics. 00:18:29.68\00:18:32.94 The great thinker and philosopher Plato 00:18:32.97\00:18:35.59 said this "No man can be a lover 00:18:35.62\00:18:38.88 of wisdom and a lover of the body." 00:18:38.91\00:18:43.91 And finally Philo of Alexandria who was Jew 00:18:43.94\00:18:47.44 but he had contaminated with the Greek way of thinking 00:18:47.47\00:18:51.09 said "The body is a prison and a corpse." 00:18:51.12\00:18:57.86 So they believed that the material body was evil 00:18:57.89\00:19:01.59 and the time was evil. 00:19:01.62\00:19:04.19 And therefore some how the soul could leave 00:19:04.22\00:19:07.22 the body and enter in its true existence in the realm 00:19:07.25\00:19:10.89 were there was no time and there was no matter. 00:19:10.92\00:19:13.35 Therefore, time would not act upon matter to cause death 00:19:13.38\00:19:17.30 and all of these sins of the flesh would disappear 00:19:17.33\00:19:20.87 because the guilty part it was the flesh. 00:19:20.90\00:19:25.15 Now you can imagine the frustration 00:19:25.18\00:19:26.84 of the Apostle Paul discussing these things 00:19:26.87\00:19:29.39 with the Greeks philosophers on Mars Hill. 00:19:29.42\00:19:34.99 Way over there in Greece you can still visit the Areopagus 00:19:35.02\00:19:38.74 where the Apostle Paul met with these Greek philosophers. 00:19:38.77\00:19:41.85 Go with me to Acts 17:18. 00:19:41.88\00:19:45.15 Acts 17:18 describes this encounter of the Apostle Paul 00:19:45.18\00:19:50.80 with philosophers who were Stoics and Epicureans. 00:19:50.83\00:19:55.77 It says there, "Then certain Epicurean 00:19:55.80\00:19:59.85 and Stoic philosophers encountered him. 00:19:59.88\00:20:04.35 And some said, 'What does this babbler want to say?' 00:20:04.38\00:20:10.96 Others said, 'He seems to be a proclaimer 00:20:10.99\00:20:14.21 of foreign gods,' because he preached 00:20:14.24\00:20:17.98 to them Jesus and" what? 00:20:18.01\00:20:21.12 "Jesus and the resurrection." 00:20:21.15\00:20:26.92 There was no doctrine that would be more absurd 00:20:26.95\00:20:30.56 and ridicules in the mind of the Greek philosopher 00:20:30.59\00:20:34.29 then the idea of the resurrection of the body. 00:20:34.32\00:20:36.59 Who would ever want to keep the body, 00:20:36.62\00:20:38.89 was there a concept. 00:20:38.92\00:20:40.53 In fact notice Acts 17:32. 00:20:40.56\00:20:44.33 Acts 17:32, when the Apostle Paul 00:20:44.36\00:20:47.60 finishes his discussion we're told, 00:20:47.63\00:20:50.66 "And when they heard of the resurrection 00:20:50.69\00:20:52.81 of the dead," what did they do? 00:20:52.84\00:20:55.75 "Some mocked, while others said, 00:20:55.78\00:20:59.41 'We will hear you again on this matter.'" 00:20:59.44\00:21:05.03 So there was this conflict 00:21:05.06\00:21:07.00 this controversy in the ancient world. 00:21:07.03\00:21:10.03 There was the Biblical concept, 00:21:10.06\00:21:11.85 the time is good and matter is good. 00:21:11.88\00:21:15.73 There was that Greek concept, 00:21:15.76\00:21:17.14 the time is evil and matter is evil. 00:21:17.17\00:21:20.92 The biblical concept is that time and matter originally 00:21:20.95\00:21:25.80 were created good by God but as a result of sin time 00:21:25.83\00:21:29.98 degenerates matter and leads to death. 00:21:30.01\00:21:33.07 The Greek philosophers not having the Bible, 00:21:33.10\00:21:36.14 not having a clear concept of sin could not explain 00:21:36.17\00:21:39.60 why time deteriorates matter. 00:21:39.63\00:21:41.98 And therefore they came up this idea that man 00:21:42.01\00:21:44.67 is inside himself an immortal soul and that when a person dies 00:21:44.70\00:21:49.17 the soul flies out of the body into a sphere 00:21:49.20\00:21:52.17 where there is no time, no space. 00:21:52.20\00:21:54.42 Therefore there is no evil, there is not this controversy 00:21:54.45\00:21:58.18 between virtues and vices, 00:21:58.21\00:22:00.31 between the sins of the flesh and holiness. 00:22:00.34\00:22:05.06 This idea is totally contrary to the biblical idea. 00:22:05.09\00:22:10.91 In fact, if you go with me to John 1:14. 00:22:10.94\00:22:15.63 John 1:14, you know, you read this verse to a Greek 00:22:15.66\00:22:21.88 and he would say "you're totally insane." 00:22:21.91\00:22:25.85 Notice what it says there. 00:22:25.88\00:22:28.00 "And the Word" who has been 00:22:28.03\00:22:29.76 identified as the God. 00:22:29.79\00:22:31.19 "And the Word was made" was what? 00:22:31.22\00:22:34.25 Flesh, have mercy. 00:22:34.28\00:22:37.28 Flesh you got be kidding me. 00:22:37.31\00:22:39.32 The philosophers would say 00:22:39.35\00:22:40.70 "That God wanted to become flesh." 00:22:40.73\00:22:42.81 No, you leave the flesh 00:22:42.84\00:22:45.19 and then you go you become a God. 00:22:45.22\00:22:47.61 But not a God taking flesh, flesh is evil. 00:22:47.64\00:22:51.57 And coming into time in the fullness of time 00:22:51.60\00:22:55.57 the Messiah comes and he takes 00:22:55.60\00:22:57.58 fleshly body absurd they would say. 00:22:57.61\00:23:00.76 So it says, "And the Word 00:23:00.79\00:23:02.07 was made flesh and dwelt among us, 00:23:02.10\00:23:05.41 and we beheld His glory, 00:23:05.44\00:23:06.75 the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, 00:23:06.78\00:23:09.66 full of grace and truth." 00:23:09.69\00:23:12.90 And then of course, you have the description 00:23:12.93\00:23:14.81 of Jesus after the resurrection. 00:23:14.84\00:23:17.14 Notice Luke 24:39. Luke 24:39, 00:23:17.17\00:23:23.69 Jesus says after the resurrection, 00:23:23.72\00:23:25.85 "Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. 00:23:25.88\00:23:32.66 Handle Me and see, for a spirit 00:23:32.69\00:23:36.77 have not flesh and bones as you see that I have." 00:23:36.80\00:23:44.76 For a Greek philosopher, that would be absurd. 00:23:44.79\00:23:47.35 You mean, when He came out of the tomb, 00:23:47.38\00:23:49.14 He actually had a body of flesh and bones? 00:23:49.17\00:23:52.57 Because their idea was to escape the body. 00:23:52.60\00:23:57.15 It becomes worse. 00:23:57.18\00:23:59.19 1 John 4:3, 1 John 4:3, would be totally absurd 00:23:59.22\00:24:05.04 to the Greek mind of that time. 00:24:05.07\00:24:08.10 It says, "And every spirit that does not confess 00:24:08.13\00:24:10.89 that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh--" 00:24:10.92\00:24:14.14 That Jesus Christ has come how? 00:24:14.17\00:24:16.32 "In the flesh is not of God. 00:24:16.35\00:24:19.13 And this is the spirit of the Antichrist 00:24:19.16\00:24:21.32 which you have heard was coming 00:24:21.35\00:24:22.90 and is now already in the world." 00:24:22.93\00:24:25.78 Notice, if you don't believe 00:24:25.81\00:24:27.19 it that the Christ came in the flesh, 00:24:27.22\00:24:30.17 you're a member of the Antichrist system, 00:24:30.20\00:24:32.42 is what John is saying which would be absurd 00:24:32.45\00:24:35.77 to the Greek way of thinking. 00:24:35.80\00:24:38.00 It becomes even worse than that. 00:24:38.03\00:24:40.14 Notice Romans 8:3. 00:24:40.17\00:24:42.73 Romans 8:3, when Jesus came, 00:24:42.76\00:24:45.27 he didn't come in any old kind of holy flesh, 00:24:45.30\00:24:48.07 we're told there in Romans 8:3, "For what the law 00:24:48.10\00:24:52.46 could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, 00:24:52.49\00:24:56.44 God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, 00:24:56.47\00:25:03.11 on account of sin, He condemned sin," How? 00:25:03.14\00:25:07.37 "He condemned sin in the flesh." 00:25:07.40\00:25:12.16 So let me ask you 00:25:12.19\00:25:13.22 in the Biblical concept, is flesh evil? 00:25:13.25\00:25:16.51 Is matter evil? No. 00:25:16.54\00:25:19.16 Is time evil? No. 00:25:19.19\00:25:22.67 Why then this time act upon 00:25:22.70\00:25:24.88 matter and degenerate matter, it is because of what? 00:25:24.91\00:25:28.93 Sin. But if somehow you can get rid of sin, 00:25:28.96\00:25:32.50 you could get rid of this vicious cycle of time 00:25:32.53\00:25:35.88 acting upon matter because you could once again 00:25:35.91\00:25:38.64 eat from the tree of life. 00:25:38.67\00:25:41.11 Are you understanding what I'm saying? 00:25:41.14\00:25:42.48 The hope of the Christian is not in the immortality of the soul, 00:25:42.51\00:25:45.69 the hope of the Christian is in the resurrection of dead, 00:25:45.72\00:25:49.20 in receiving a new body, an immortal body, 00:25:49.23\00:25:52.50 an incorruptible body. 00:25:52.53\00:25:54.14 There still will be time, there still will be matter, 00:25:54.17\00:25:57.25 but there will no longer be sin. 00:25:57.28\00:26:00.68 That's what the Greek philosophers 00:26:00.71\00:26:02.13 could not understand. 00:26:02.16\00:26:03.91 In fact, I want you to notice in Romans 8:23, 00:26:03.94\00:26:08.61 Romans 8:23, the Apostle Paul speaks about 00:26:08.64\00:26:12.74 the redemption of the body. 00:26:12.77\00:26:15.26 He says "Not only that but we also have, 00:26:15.29\00:26:19.08 who have the first fruits of the spirit, 00:26:19.11\00:26:21.11 even we ourselves grown within ourselves," 00:26:21.14\00:26:26.35 eagerly waiting for a soul to depart the body 00:26:26.38\00:26:29.35 and go to a timeless and matter less existence. 00:26:29.38\00:26:32.22 That's not what it says, right? 00:26:32.25\00:26:34.15 It says, "We're grown within ourselves 00:26:34.18\00:26:37.09 eagerly waiting for the adoption" for what? 00:26:37.12\00:26:40.10 "For the redemption of the body." 00:26:40.13\00:26:45.27 The Greeks would say redemption of what? 00:26:45.30\00:26:47.71 Of the body? 00:26:47.74\00:26:49.79 That material substance upon which time 00:26:49.82\00:26:52.25 acts and it degenerates? 00:26:52.28\00:26:54.13 You see they could not understand, 00:26:54.16\00:26:55.98 they didn't had all of the Revelation, 00:26:56.01\00:26:59.05 that the problem was not with time and matter, 00:26:59.08\00:27:01.42 the problem was with sin that leads time 00:27:01.45\00:27:04.86 to degenerate matter and having no access 00:27:04.89\00:27:07.36 to the Tree of Life, matter could not be 00:27:07.39\00:27:09.92 regenerated and renewed. 00:27:09.95\00:27:11.97 Are you understanding what I'm saying? 00:27:12.00\00:27:13.53 Now is there gonna be matter 00:27:13.56\00:27:15.70 in the new heavens and the new earth? 00:27:15.73\00:27:17.94 Absolutely. Go with me to Revelation 22:1, 2. 00:27:17.97\00:27:22.12 Revelation 22:1, 2, speaking about the holy city, 00:27:22.15\00:27:26.18 it says, "And he showed me a pure river 00:27:26.21\00:27:27.78 of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding 00:27:27.81\00:27:31.11 from the throne of God and of the Lamb." 00:27:31.14\00:27:33.30 Is there gonna be water there? 00:27:33.33\00:27:34.75 That's what it says. 00:27:34.78\00:27:36.28 "In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, 00:27:36.31\00:27:39.27 was the tree of life," also there are gonna 00:27:39.30\00:27:40.61 be tree there too "which bore twelve fruits." 00:27:40.64\00:27:43.89 Oh, there's gonna be fruit there also. 00:27:43.92\00:27:45.98 "Each tree yielding its fruit every" what? 00:27:46.01\00:27:51.05 So is there gonna be time there? 00:27:51.08\00:27:52.58 Of course, every month. 00:27:52.61\00:27:54.61 "And the leaves of the tree 00:27:54.64\00:27:56.24 were for the healing of the nations." 00:27:56.27\00:27:59.74 Now let's go to Isaiah 66:22, 23, 00:27:59.77\00:28:02.97 once again you're gonna find that there, 00:28:03.00\00:28:04.44 there'll be matter and there'll be time 00:28:04.47\00:28:08.08 but it will be freed from what? 00:28:08.11\00:28:10.43 It will be freed from sin. 00:28:10.46\00:28:13.15 Notice Isaiah 66:22, 23. 00:28:13.18\00:28:16.84 It says there, "For as the new heavens 00:28:16.87\00:28:19.88 and the new earth Which I will make shall remain 00:28:19.91\00:28:23.46 before Me, says the Lord, 00:28:23.49\00:28:25.14 so shall your descendants and your name remain. 00:28:25.17\00:28:28.61 And it shall come to pass that from one New Moon to another." 00:28:28.64\00:28:31.54 Are there gonna be months there? 00:28:31.57\00:28:33.35 Of course, there are. 00:28:33.38\00:28:34.46 "From one New Moon to another 00:28:34.49\00:28:35.94 and from one Sabbath to another." 00:28:35.97\00:28:37.91 Is there gonna to be a week there? Absolutely. 00:28:37.94\00:28:40.98 "And from Sabbath, from one Sabbath to another." 00:28:41.01\00:28:44.63 Is there gonna be matter there? 00:28:44.66\00:28:46.19 Notice, "all," what? 00:28:46.22\00:28:48.96 "Flesh shall come to worship before Me, says the Lord." 00:28:48.99\00:28:54.06 And of course the bible says that we will eat 00:28:54.09\00:28:55.86 from the tree of life and our material substance 00:28:55.89\00:28:59.05 will be renewed every time that we eat from the tree of life. 00:28:59.08\00:29:04.60 Let's read about that moment of redemption of the body. 00:29:04.63\00:29:07.64 1 Corinthians 15:51-54, listen, 00:29:07.67\00:29:12.94 the great hope of the Apostle Paul 00:29:12.97\00:29:15.72 was not in having an immortal soul 00:29:15.75\00:29:18.21 that would fly off at the moment of death. 00:29:18.24\00:29:20.74 The Apostle Paul debated with the Greek philosophers. 00:29:20.77\00:29:24.83 He did not agree with the ideas of the Greek philosophers. 00:29:24.86\00:29:27.89 In fact, the bible tells us that they mocked, 00:29:27.92\00:29:30.94 they couldn't understand how the Apostle Paul would say, 00:29:30.97\00:29:33.83 that the hope of the Christian 00:29:33.86\00:29:35.17 was in the resurrection of the body, 00:29:35.20\00:29:36.92 it was not in an immortal soul that man 00:29:36.95\00:29:39.86 would have within himself. 00:29:39.89\00:29:41.52 1 Corinthians 15:51, "Behold, I tell you a mystery, 00:29:41.55\00:29:46.03 We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed 00:29:46.06\00:29:48.98 in a moment in the twinkling of an eye, 00:29:49.01\00:29:51.27 at the last trumpet. 00:29:51.30\00:29:52.61 For the trumpet will sound, 00:29:52.64\00:29:53.95 and the dead will be raised" how? 00:29:53.98\00:29:55.82 "Incorruptible and we shall be changed. 00:29:55.85\00:29:58.50 For this corruptible must put on incorruption 00:29:58.53\00:30:01.12 and this mortal must put on immortality. 00:30:01.15\00:30:04.27 So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, 00:30:04.30\00:30:07.48 and this mortal has put on immortality, 00:30:07.51\00:30:09.98 then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, 00:30:10.01\00:30:12.89 'Death is swallowed up in victory.'" 00:30:12.92\00:30:16.76 Let's read also Philippians 3:20, 21 00:30:16.79\00:30:20.71 where we're told that we are gonna 00:30:20.74\00:30:22.66 have a body similar to the body of Jesus. 00:30:22.69\00:30:25.40 We're gonna be in the image and likeness of Jesus. 00:30:25.43\00:30:28.26 Did Jesus have a real body when He resurrected? 00:30:28.29\00:30:31.02 Did He have flesh and bones and blood? 00:30:31.05\00:30:33.85 He most certainly did. 00:30:33.88\00:30:35.11 And that we will have in the earth made new. 00:30:35.14\00:30:38.99 Notice Philippians 3:20, 21, 00:30:39.02\00:30:41.75 "For our citizenship is in heaven, 00:30:41.78\00:30:44.82 from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, 00:30:44.85\00:30:48.85 the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform 00:30:48.88\00:30:52.86 our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, 00:30:52.89\00:30:59.74 according to the working by which He is able 00:30:59.77\00:31:02.72 even to subdue all things to Himself." 00:31:02.75\00:31:07.37 And yet today, many Christians harbor 00:31:07.40\00:31:11.43 the view of the Greek philosophers. 00:31:11.46\00:31:15.27 Their hope at least to a degree 00:31:15.30\00:31:19.10 is that if I should die at the moment of death, 00:31:19.13\00:31:23.39 I have another me inside of me that is immortal 00:31:23.42\00:31:28.40 that flies out of the body goes up to heaven 00:31:28.43\00:31:31.97 where Jesus is, that is if I was righteous 00:31:32.00\00:31:35.32 during my life and I accept the Jesus Christ 00:31:35.35\00:31:38.11 as my Savior and that soul lives up 00:31:38.14\00:31:41.13 there independently of the body. 00:31:41.16\00:31:45.48 Where did Christendom get such a doctrine? 00:31:45.51\00:31:49.35 From nowhere in the bible. 00:31:49.38\00:31:52.07 You will never find in the Bible the expression immortal spirit, 00:31:52.10\00:31:55.58 you will never find the expression, 00:31:55.61\00:31:57.02 immortal soul, you will never find that the soul or the spirit 00:31:57.05\00:32:00.83 can be conscious after the moment of death, 00:32:00.86\00:32:03.21 it's just assumed because Greek philosophy 00:32:03.24\00:32:07.11 brought into the Christian church 00:32:07.14\00:32:09.84 in the early centuries the idea 00:32:09.87\00:32:12.23 that the soul of man is immortal. 00:32:12.26\00:32:15.02 It came in directly from Greek philosophy. 00:32:15.05\00:32:20.95 Now let me share with you some serious implications 00:32:20.98\00:32:25.56 if we believe that man has an immortal soul. 00:32:25.59\00:32:29.93 And I'm gonna go through these quickly. 00:32:29.96\00:32:32.10 First of all, if we believe that man has an immortal soul 00:32:32.13\00:32:37.92 that even God cannot destroy. 00:32:37.95\00:32:41.38 Because they believe also that if a person 00:32:41.41\00:32:43.67 was wicked during their lifetime, 00:32:43.70\00:32:45.60 they're gonna burn forever in the fires of hell. 00:32:45.63\00:32:50.03 So in other words, they have immortality, 00:32:50.06\00:32:52.18 it's immortality in misery but it's still immortality. 00:32:52.21\00:32:57.54 First serious implication of the idea of the immortality 00:32:57.57\00:33:00.97 of the soul is that it gives the glory to man 00:33:01.00\00:33:05.86 which belongs only to God. 00:33:05.89\00:33:09.52 You see the Bible makes it clear that only God has immortality. 00:33:09.55\00:33:15.91 You see that immortality of God 00:33:15.94\00:33:17.96 is one of his incommunicable attributes. 00:33:17.99\00:33:20.42 It belongs only to Him according to the Bible 00:33:20.45\00:33:24.17 just like His omissions, His omnipotence, 00:33:24.20\00:33:27.17 His omnipresence, His immortality belongs to Himself. 00:33:27.20\00:33:30.84 And to give it to man, steals the glory 00:33:30.87\00:33:34.44 that belongs from God--to God 00:33:34.47\00:33:36.35 and attributes that glory to man. 00:33:36.38\00:33:39.36 And the bible tells us in Revelation 14:7 00:33:39.39\00:33:41.90 that in the last days, a message is going 00:33:41.93\00:33:44.47 to be proclaimed that says, "Fear God and give glory 00:33:44.50\00:33:48.00 to Him for the hour of His judgment is come." 00:33:48.03\00:33:52.21 Second serious implication, the doctrine of the immortality 00:33:52.24\00:33:56.95 of the soul makes God a liar 00:33:56.98\00:33:59.23 and makes the devil a truth teller. 00:33:59.26\00:34:02.88 You're saying now how's that? 00:34:02.91\00:34:04.85 God told Adam and Eve, if you eat from this tree, 00:34:04.88\00:34:09.25 you will surely live forever in misery. 00:34:09.28\00:34:13.25 That's not what he said. 00:34:13.28\00:34:15.33 He said "If you eat from this tree, 00:34:15.36\00:34:17.92 you will, not only die." 00:34:17.95\00:34:20.56 He says "you will surely die." 00:34:20.59\00:34:23.69 By the way in the Hebrews it says, 00:34:23.72\00:34:24.75 "You'll die by death." 00:34:24.78\00:34:27.68 I don't know of any other way of dying. 00:34:27.71\00:34:29.66 But what God is saying is you can take it to the bank 00:34:29.69\00:34:33.59 if you eat from this tree, you will die. 00:34:33.62\00:34:35.44 The devil comes and he says, you will not surely die. 00:34:35.47\00:34:39.55 So who was telling the truth? 00:34:39.58\00:34:41.44 If you have an immortal soul, the devil was telling the truth. 00:34:41.47\00:34:45.28 If when you die, you go to the grave 00:34:45.31\00:34:49.14 and then at the resurrection you go to heaven, 00:34:49.17\00:34:51.93 through life that Jesus gives you and you go to burn 00:34:51.96\00:34:56.03 like we studied in our last lecture and eventually, 00:34:56.06\00:34:59.16 are reduced to ashes, then God is proven true 00:34:59.19\00:35:02.63 because you are not eternal, 00:35:02.66\00:35:04.57 you are not immortal within yourself. 00:35:04.60\00:35:07.26 So in other words, "This doctrine makes God a liar 00:35:07.29\00:35:10.02 and it makes the devil a truth teller." 00:35:10.05\00:35:13.74 Implication number three, "If man has an immortal soul, 00:35:13.77\00:35:18.32 why would Jesus have to die to give me 00:35:18.35\00:35:21.32 what I already have?" 00:35:21.35\00:35:24.38 This is a very serious implication. 00:35:24.41\00:35:27.53 Because if you have an immortal soul 00:35:27.56\00:35:29.69 why would Jesus have to come to this earth to die 00:35:29.72\00:35:33.94 to give you immortality if you already possess it. 00:35:33.97\00:35:37.72 Are you understanding what I'm saying? 00:35:37.75\00:35:39.60 The doctrine of the immortality of the soul 00:35:39.63\00:35:42.35 makes the death of Jesus on the cross unnecessary. 00:35:42.38\00:35:47.60 Further more, the doctrine of the immortality 00:35:47.63\00:35:51.02 of the soul generally makes people feel like 00:35:51.05\00:35:55.20 it's not that important to take care of your body 00:35:55.23\00:35:59.12 because ultimately your body is just the prison 00:35:59.15\00:36:02.06 for your real self which is your soul. 00:36:02.09\00:36:05.42 And therefore you have to take good care of your soul 00:36:05.45\00:36:08.28 and what will you do with your body doesn't make 00:36:08.31\00:36:10.53 much difference because ultimately, 00:36:10.56\00:36:12.43 God is gonna give you a new one anyway. 00:36:12.46\00:36:16.83 That flies in the face of what the Bible has to say. 00:36:16.86\00:36:19.69 It says you are the temple of the Holy Spirit 00:36:19.72\00:36:23.38 that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit 00:36:23.42\00:36:26.86 and whoever destroys the body temple God 00:36:26.89\00:36:29.56 will destroy him for God's temple you are, you are holy 00:36:29.59\00:36:33.40 because you are His temple. 00:36:33.43\00:36:35.32 If therefore you eat or you drink 00:36:35.35\00:36:37.25 or whatever you do, do all to what? 00:36:37.28\00:36:40.16 To the glory of God. 00:36:40.19\00:36:42.88 Allow me to read you a statement from Ellen White. 00:36:42.91\00:36:45.23 This is found in the book Counsels on Diet and Foods, 00:36:45.26\00:36:48.20 page 73, she says this, "The body is the only medium 00:36:48.23\00:36:53.90 through which the mind and the soul are developed 00:36:53.93\00:36:57.15 for the upbuilding of character. 00:36:57.18\00:37:01.34 Hence it is that the adversary of souls, 00:37:01.37\00:37:05.30 directs his temptations to the enfeebling 00:37:05.33\00:37:08.05 and degrading of the physical powers. 00:37:08.08\00:37:11.33 His success here means the surrender 00:37:11.36\00:37:15.01 to evil of the whole being. 00:37:15.04\00:37:17.29 The tendencies of our physical nature, 00:37:17.32\00:37:19.72 unless under the dominion of a higher power, 00:37:19.75\00:37:23.59 will surely work ruin and death." 00:37:23.62\00:37:29.47 You see the brain is a physical organ, 00:37:29.50\00:37:32.75 its the organ of the mind and whatever affects your body, 00:37:32.78\00:37:36.59 whatever affects your mind, affects your ability 00:37:36.62\00:37:39.32 to communicate with God. 00:37:39.35\00:37:42.32 It's not like your soul can live independently of your body. 00:37:42.35\00:37:45.68 And therefore, I have to take care of my spiritual nature. 00:37:45.71\00:37:48.53 I have to take care of my spirit and my soul. 00:37:48.56\00:37:50.54 My body doesn't make that much difference. 00:37:50.57\00:37:52.24 The fact is that the only way that you can develop 00:37:52.27\00:37:54.79 your spiritual nature is through the medium of the body. 00:37:54.82\00:37:59.00 But the immortality of the soul gives the idea 00:37:59.03\00:38:01.46 that it's the soul portion of man that's really important 00:38:01.49\00:38:04.98 that we need to cultivate and we need to take care of. 00:38:05.01\00:38:08.35 Fifth serious implication, the doctrine of the immortality 00:38:08.38\00:38:12.69 of the soul puts the hope of the second coming of Jesus 00:38:12.72\00:38:18.57 on the backburner, and deemphasize 00:38:18.60\00:38:23.22 the second coming of Jesus Christ. 00:38:23.25\00:38:25.77 You say why is that? 00:38:25.80\00:38:27.20 Well, folks, let's just think of it. 00:38:27.23\00:38:31.23 If when I die, my soul goes through a tunnel 00:38:31.26\00:38:36.44 and comes out into a state of light 00:38:36.47\00:38:39.11 or I'm in the presence of God, why would I have to be 00:38:39.14\00:38:43.02 so interested in Jesus coming back to this earth again? 00:38:43.05\00:38:48.03 You see many Christians have the hope that you know 00:38:48.06\00:38:50.86 when I die, I'm going to heaven. 00:38:50.89\00:38:52.77 So when you die, you go to heaven, 00:38:52.80\00:38:54.92 why would the hope of the resurrection 00:38:54.95\00:38:57.50 and the second coming of Jesus burn strong in your heart? 00:38:57.53\00:39:03.06 It deemphasizes the need and the importance 00:39:03.09\00:39:06.38 and the gloriousness of the second coming 00:39:06.41\00:39:08.82 and of the resurrection from the dead. 00:39:08.85\00:39:12.46 The last implication that I want to discuss 00:39:12.49\00:39:15.76 is that the doctrine of the immortality 00:39:15.79\00:39:18.10 of the soul opens the door of the church wide 00:39:18.13\00:39:22.39 to the manifestations of spiritualism. 00:39:22.42\00:39:27.66 In fact, the Book of Revelation 18:2, 3 00:39:27.69\00:39:30.82 speaking about falling Christendom 00:39:30.85\00:39:33.10 in the last days says, that Christendom 00:39:33.13\00:39:35.55 has become the habitation of devils. 00:39:35.58\00:39:39.17 And evil spirits and they're speaking about Christendom. 00:39:39.20\00:39:44.64 In other words when you believe 00:39:44.67\00:39:46.01 that the soul of man is immortal, 00:39:46.04\00:39:48.06 what would keep that soul that supposed soul 00:39:48.09\00:39:51.52 from coming back to this world to try and communicate 00:39:51.55\00:39:56.20 with those who are alive? 00:39:56.23\00:39:58.50 Are you with me? 00:39:58.53\00:40:00.31 Now you might not know this but there was a senator of Wisconsin 00:40:00.34\00:40:06.69 who in 1853, his name was N.P. Tallmadge. 00:40:06.72\00:40:11.18 He not only was a senator from Wisconsin, 00:40:11.21\00:40:13.15 he was also governor of the state for a while. 00:40:13.18\00:40:16.38 He was a spiritualist and he went and consulted 00:40:16.41\00:40:19.96 a medium and the medium brought up someone 00:40:19.99\00:40:23.60 by the name of John C. Calhoun 00:40:23.63\00:40:28.36 and so senator Tallmadge asked him, 00:40:28.39\00:40:30.85 "what is the purpose of all of these spiritualistic phenomena?" 00:40:30.88\00:40:35.53 Notice what the supposed spirit of John C. Calhoun said. 00:40:35.56\00:40:40.52 "My friend, often the question is asked what good can come 00:40:40.55\00:40:45.94 from these manifestations." 00:40:45.97\00:40:47.37 That is from spiritualism. 00:40:47.40\00:40:49.20 "I will respond. It is to unite mankind in harmony 00:40:49.23\00:40:55.58 and to convince skeptics of the immortality of the soul." 00:40:55.61\00:41:00.72 Do you notice those two purports? 00:41:00.75\00:41:02.43 To unite all of humanity in one and to convince skeptics 00:41:02.46\00:41:08.56 of the immortality of the soul. 00:41:08.59\00:41:11.13 Author Conan Doyle, the author of the famous 00:41:11.16\00:41:14.56 Sherlock Holmes novels once said this about spiritualism. 00:41:14.59\00:41:19.37 He said, "I believe that one of the ultimate results 00:41:19.40\00:41:23.68 of this movement, that's spiritualism, 00:41:23.71\00:41:26.69 will be to unite Christianity upon a common basis 00:41:26.72\00:41:32.39 so strong and, indeed self-sufficient 00:41:32.42\00:41:36.54 that the quibbles which separate the churches 00:41:36.57\00:41:38.76 today will be seen in their true light and proportion 00:41:38.79\00:41:42.21 and will be swept away or disregarded." 00:41:42.24\00:41:49.36 Now I want to read you a statement by another author 00:41:49.39\00:41:53.58 who wrote several years after this. 00:41:53.61\00:41:56.64 Her name Ellen White. 00:41:56.67\00:42:00.48 This statement is found 00:42:00.51\00:42:01.54 in the Great Controversy, pages 588 and 89. 00:42:01.57\00:42:04.31 You know what the spirits revealing was true. 00:42:04.34\00:42:06.70 It is their intention to unite all of humanity in common 00:42:06.73\00:42:10.24 and to convince skeptics that the soul of man is immortal. 00:42:10.27\00:42:14.89 Notice what Ellen White had to say, 00:42:14.92\00:42:17.11 "The line of distinction between professed Christians 00:42:17.14\00:42:19.87 and the ungodly is now hardly distinguishable." 00:42:19.90\00:42:24.05 Is that true? Absolutely. 00:42:24.08\00:42:26.78 "Church members love what the world loves 00:42:26.81\00:42:30.07 and are ready to join with them and Satan determines 00:42:30.10\00:42:34.52 to unite them in one body and thus strengthen 00:42:34.55\00:42:39.23 his cause by sweeping all into the ranks of spiritualism." 00:42:39.26\00:42:45.45 Then she says, "Papists, who boast of miracles 00:42:45.48\00:42:50.09 as a certain sign of the true church will be readily 00:42:50.12\00:42:53.51 deceived by this wonder-working power, 00:42:53.54\00:42:56.53 and Protestants, having cast away 00:42:56.56\00:42:59.42 the shield of truth, will also be deluded. 00:42:59.45\00:43:02.95 Papists, Protestants, and worldlings," 00:43:02.98\00:43:07.45 That's another word for the secular, 00:43:07.48\00:43:10.42 "will alike accept the form of godliness without the power 00:43:10.45\00:43:15.46 and they will see in this union a grand movement 00:43:15.49\00:43:21.23 for the conversion of the world and the ushering 00:43:21.26\00:43:24.43 in of the long-expected millennium." 00:43:24.46\00:43:30.42 Let me ask you, is this deception well on its way? 00:43:30.45\00:43:34.35 It most certainly is. 00:43:34.38\00:43:36.17 Allow me to share with you some of the things 00:43:36.20\00:43:37.83 that have been happening in the last couple of decades. 00:43:37.86\00:43:42.11 Any of you have ever read 00:43:42.14\00:43:43.61 the book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill? 00:43:43.64\00:43:47.63 You know, I once read that book it has certain principles 00:43:47.66\00:43:50.52 of how you can make yourself rich real quick. 00:43:50.55\00:43:52.88 You know, and I thought, wow, this is great, 00:43:52.91\00:43:54.67 all these principles that it gives and how you can get 00:43:54.70\00:43:56.84 rich and then one day, I was reading 00:43:56.87\00:43:58.65 an article in LIFE Magazine. 00:43:58.68\00:44:00.75 And in that article, it says "that book Think and Grow Rich 00:44:00.78\00:44:04.32 was dictated to Napoleon Hill from the spirit world." 00:44:04.35\00:44:10.38 The same with the book Jonathan Livingston Seagull 00:44:10.41\00:44:13.84 by Richard Bach, a new ager. 00:44:13.87\00:44:16.54 About the Seagull trying to reach the heights, 00:44:16.57\00:44:19.25 you know, and I thought this is a wonderful book 00:44:19.28\00:44:21.53 about the need to persevere and tell you make it. 00:44:21.56\00:44:26.14 And then one day I was reading an article in LIFE Magazine 00:44:26.17\00:44:28.87 again and I discover that Richard Bach 00:44:28.90\00:44:32.50 said that this book Jonathan Livingston Seagull 00:44:32.53\00:44:37.10 was dictated to him from the spirit world. 00:44:37.13\00:44:39.14 Then I read it again, said, "Wow, how couldn't I see 00:44:39.17\00:44:42.04 the spiritualism and the new age theology in this book." 00:44:42.07\00:44:46.56 Benny Hinn, I hate to mention the name 00:44:46.59\00:44:50.10 but he's put himself on the record. 00:44:50.13\00:44:51.89 He claims to communicate with Kathryn Kuhlman, 00:44:51.92\00:44:56.07 a dead charismatic leader. 00:44:56.10\00:44:59.12 Pat Robertson has gone on the record 00:44:59.15\00:45:00.97 saying that out of body experiences 00:45:01.00\00:45:03.21 and near death experiences are proof that man 00:45:03.24\00:45:06.61 has an immortal soul. 00:45:06.64\00:45:09.11 The tremendous emphasis on angels coming back, 00:45:09.14\00:45:13.71 you know, departed spirits 00:45:13.74\00:45:15.61 coming back this world as angels to take care 00:45:15.64\00:45:19.34 of us and to communicate with us. 00:45:19.37\00:45:20.90 For example, the program Highway to Heaven. 00:45:20.93\00:45:24.93 How about the movies, Lord of the Rings, 00:45:24.96\00:45:27.39 Harry Potter, The Sixth Sense? 00:45:27.42\00:45:30.00 I only mentioned some of them. 00:45:30.03\00:45:32.16 How about the supposed appearances 00:45:32.19\00:45:34.00 all over the world of the Virgin Mary? 00:45:34.03\00:45:37.53 How about the astrology sections in book stores? 00:45:37.56\00:45:40.72 They far outshine the sections on theology and philosophy. 00:45:40.75\00:45:45.73 How about the programs on televisions 00:45:45.76\00:45:47.78 where psychics live claim 00:45:47.81\00:45:50.39 to communicate with departed relatives? 00:45:50.42\00:45:53.60 How about new age publications that are proliferated big time? 00:45:53.63\00:45:59.70 Listen, we not only anticipate that this is what was gonna 00:45:59.73\00:46:04.39 happen by what Sir Arthur Conan Doyle said, 00:46:04.42\00:46:08.98 and this supposed spirit of Calhoun said, 00:46:09.01\00:46:12.81 we can see it today with our own eyes 00:46:12.84\00:46:15.57 the manifestation of spiritualism. 00:46:15.60\00:46:17.43 And churches who believe that the soul of man 00:46:17.46\00:46:19.63 is immortal have left the doors of the church 00:46:19.66\00:46:22.36 wide open for the spirits to come in and communicate 00:46:22.39\00:46:26.69 false doctrine such as the idea 00:46:26.72\00:46:28.98 that Sunday is the true day of rest. 00:46:29.01\00:46:31.10 And believe me, mark my word, the day is coming 00:46:31.13\00:46:34.30 when the supposed spirits of the dead, 00:46:34.33\00:46:36.40 supposed I said, are gonna come 00:46:36.44\00:46:39.01 and they're gonna get you that Sunday 00:46:39.04\00:46:41.13 is the day we're supposed to keep. 00:46:41.16\00:46:42.57 And if you believe that the dead can come back 00:46:42.60\00:46:44.88 and talk with the living, if you believe 00:46:44.91\00:46:46.64 that the soul of man is immortal, 00:46:46.67\00:46:48.53 you are wide open to accept that as truth 00:46:48.56\00:46:52.10 when it totally contradicts what the scripture says. 00:46:52.13\00:46:57.60 Modern Spiritualism originated in 1848 with 00:46:57.63\00:47:01.73 the Fox Sisters in Rochester-- near Rochester, New York. 00:47:01.76\00:47:05.59 Ellen White around that time wrote something amazing things. 00:47:05.62\00:47:09.83 You see it was only something that took place 00:47:09.86\00:47:11.96 there in New England at that time 00:47:11.99\00:47:13.76 it didn't had not proliferated worldwide. 00:47:13.79\00:47:15.81 Ellen White saw that this was going 00:47:15.84\00:47:17.59 to become a worldwide movement. 00:47:17.62\00:47:19.32 Allow me to read you a statement 00:47:19.35\00:47:21.36 that we find in the book Early Writings, page 88. 00:47:21.39\00:47:24.77 She says this, "I saw the rapidity 00:47:24.80\00:47:27.78 with which this delusion was spreading." 00:47:27.81\00:47:29.93 That is spiritualism. 00:47:29.96\00:47:32.07 "A train of cars was shown me, 00:47:32.10\00:47:34.39 going with the speed of lightning. 00:47:34.42\00:47:36.81 The angel bade me looked carefully. 00:47:36.84\00:47:39.88 I fixed my eyes upon the train. 00:47:39.91\00:47:42.39 It seemed that the whole world was on board 00:47:42.42\00:47:47.49 that there could not be one left." said the angel. 00:47:47.52\00:47:52.20 "They are binding in bundles ready to burn. 00:47:52.23\00:47:55.67 Then he showed me the conductor who appeared like 00:47:55.70\00:47:59.57 a stately fair person whom all the passengers 00:47:59.60\00:48:04.15 looked up to and reverenced. 00:48:04.18\00:48:07.70 I was perplexed," Boy, she was perplexed 00:48:07.73\00:48:10.26 what hope is there for us? 00:48:10.29\00:48:12.31 "I was perplexed, and asked my attending angel who it was. 00:48:12.34\00:48:17.59 He said it is Satan. 00:48:17.62\00:48:20.58 He is the conductor in the form of an angel of light. 00:48:20.61\00:48:24.45 He has taken the world captive. 00:48:24.48\00:48:27.16 They are given over to strong delusions, 00:48:27.19\00:48:29.73 to believe a lie that they may be damned. 00:48:29.76\00:48:33.06 This agent, the next highest in order to him, 00:48:33.09\00:48:36.54 is the engineer, and others of his agents 00:48:36.57\00:48:39.78 are employed in different offices as he may need them, 00:48:39.81\00:48:43.56 and they are all going with lightning speed to perdition." 00:48:43.59\00:48:49.59 The prophet Isaiah said "If they tell you go to the wizards 00:48:49.62\00:48:52.35 and to consult the dead who murder and peep 00:48:52.38\00:48:56.21 shall not God's people consult their God to the law 00:48:56.24\00:49:00.21 and to the testimony if they speak not according to this, 00:49:00.24\00:49:02.95 it is because there is no light in them." 00:49:02.98\00:49:06.50 Further more, Ellen White 00:49:06.53\00:49:07.79 in the book The Great Controversy 00:49:07.82\00:49:09.20 page 552 describes the power of Satan to deceive 00:49:09.23\00:49:13.26 through the medium of spiritualism. 00:49:13.29\00:49:15.86 The idea that the soul of man is immortal 00:49:15.89\00:49:17.77 and therefore that soul that supposed soul 00:49:17.80\00:49:20.99 can come back and communicate with the living. 00:49:21.02\00:49:23.13 Don't you think that the devil is doing some type 00:49:23.16\00:49:25.72 of a very rough counterfeits? 00:49:25.75\00:49:29.66 Notice what Ellen White has to say here, 00:49:29.69\00:49:31.72 "He has power to bring before men the appearance 00:49:31.75\00:49:35.98 of their departed friends." 00:49:36.01\00:49:38.44 Of course, if he can transform himself into an angel of light 00:49:38.47\00:49:40.80 why couldn't he transform himself into someone 00:49:40.83\00:49:44.15 that looks like a departed friend, piece of cake? 00:49:44.18\00:49:48.28 Notice this, he has power to bring before men 00:49:48.31\00:49:51.49 the appearance of their departed friends. 00:49:51.52\00:49:53.62 The counterfeit is perfect. 00:49:53.65\00:49:57.77 Do you know what a perfect counterfeit is? 00:49:57.80\00:49:59.93 It's when the counterfeiters make a counterfeit $100 00:49:59.96\00:50:03.27 and even the government can't distinguish it from the genuine. 00:50:03.30\00:50:09.30 She says, "The counterfeit is perfect, 00:50:09.33\00:50:12.23 the familiar look, the words, the tone, 00:50:12.26\00:50:17.31 are reproduced with marvelous distinctness. 00:50:17.34\00:50:21.46 Many are comforted with the assurance 00:50:21.49\00:50:24.19 that their loved ones are enjoying the bliss of heaven. 00:50:24.22\00:50:26.85 And without suspicion of danger, they give ear 00:50:26.88\00:50:30.27 'to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.' 00:50:30.30\00:50:34.92 And then she gives this counsel in Early Writings, page 87 00:50:34.95\00:50:38.79 about what we are supposed to do about it. 00:50:38.82\00:50:42.73 She says "I saw that the saints." 00:50:42.76\00:50:44.88 That's God's people. 00:50:44.91\00:50:45.94 "I saw that the saints must get a thorough understanding 00:50:45.97\00:50:50.28 of present truth which they will be obliged 00:50:50.31\00:50:53.78 to maintain from the scriptures. 00:50:53.81\00:50:58.35 They must understand the state of the dead." 00:50:58.39\00:51:01.15 That's why we're doing the series because 00:51:01.18\00:51:03.84 Christians use these verses. 00:51:03.87\00:51:05.34 What about the thief on the cross? 00:51:05.37\00:51:06.89 What about the rich man and Lazarus? 00:51:06.92\00:51:08.43 What about absent from the body 00:51:08.46\00:51:09.83 and present with the Lord? 00:51:09.86\00:51:10.89 What about the witch, the witch of Endor? 00:51:10.92\00:51:12.93 What about the souls under the altar? 00:51:12.96\00:51:14.76 What about the dead who stand before God? 00:51:14.79\00:51:16.72 What about the undying worm? 00:51:16.75\00:51:18.38 What about the unquenchable fire? 00:51:18.41\00:51:20.14 They bring up all of these texts, 00:51:20.17\00:51:21.63 we have to deal with these texts and we have to teach them 00:51:21.66\00:51:25.72 from a biblical perspective. 00:51:25.75\00:51:28.08 She continues saying "They must understand 00:51:28.11\00:51:30.48 the state of the dead for the spirits of devils 00:51:30.51\00:51:32.88 will get appear to them. 00:51:32.91\00:51:35.46 Professing to be beloved friends and relatives 00:51:35.49\00:51:39.15 who will declare to them that the Sabbath 00:51:39.18\00:51:41.87 has been changed also other unscriptural doctrines. 00:51:41.90\00:51:47.49 They will do all in their power to excite to sympathy 00:51:47.52\00:51:52.16 and will work miracles before them 00:51:52.19\00:51:55.89 to confirm what they declare." 00:51:55.92\00:52:00.43 That's the devil's plan but the beauty 00:52:00.46\00:52:03.72 of it is that if you simply say the living know 00:52:03.75\00:52:08.44 that they will die but the dead know not anything 00:52:08.47\00:52:13.81 the door to the devil's spiritualistic 00:52:13.84\00:52:16.81 manifestations is shut and closed. 00:52:16.84\00:52:21.41 Because that is impossible that the dead should communicate 00:52:21.44\00:52:24.44 with the living because the Bible says, 00:52:24.47\00:52:25.83 "That they're unconscious, they're sleeping until 00:52:25.86\00:52:28.58 the moment of the resurrection." 00:52:28.61\00:52:31.79 Now why did I call this lecture immortality 00:52:31.82\00:52:34.29 of the soul or resurrection of the dead? 00:52:34.32\00:52:37.19 Several decades ago a New Testament scholar 00:52:37.22\00:52:40.02 by the name of Oscar Coleman wrote a little booklet 00:52:40.05\00:52:45.31 that bore this title, so I'm plagiarizing the title 00:52:45.34\00:52:50.07 but I'm letting you know that I'm using it. 00:52:50.10\00:52:52.16 And in this little booklet, Oscar Coleman shared 00:52:52.19\00:52:56.83 with the scholarly world by a way highly respected scholar 00:52:56.86\00:53:00.44 in the area of New Testament. 00:53:00.47\00:53:02.72 He wrote this booklet and in it he shared 00:53:02.75\00:53:06.75 the Adventist view of the state of the dead. 00:53:06.78\00:53:09.37 He says "the Adventist view is correct." 00:53:09.40\00:53:11.70 He didn't say the Adventist view but he said, 00:53:11.73\00:53:13.72 this view of the state of the dead is correct 00:53:13.75\00:53:16.97 that the dead are dead, they're sleeping until 00:53:17.00\00:53:20.45 the moment of the resurrection. 00:53:20.48\00:53:22.22 And in his book he used an illustration. 00:53:22.25\00:53:26.00 He spoke about Socrates. 00:53:26.03\00:53:28.99 Do you know how Socrates died? 00:53:29.02\00:53:31.86 He surrounded himself 00:53:31.89\00:53:33.05 one evening with all of his disciples. 00:53:33.08\00:53:35.75 And he said to them, "You know, 00:53:35.78\00:53:37.71 I'm now going to drink this hemlock. 00:53:37.74\00:53:40.21 I'm going to drink this cup of poison. 00:53:40.24\00:53:43.12 And when I drink this cup of poison 00:53:43.15\00:53:45.79 I'm going to get rid of this old body. 00:53:45.82\00:53:50.50 That is subject to the deterioration of time 00:53:50.53\00:53:54.88 that get sick and gets old and when the body is laid aside, 00:53:54.91\00:53:59.00 my soul is gonna leave and going into a timeless fear 00:53:59.03\00:54:03.08 whether is no matter, whether is no time 00:54:03.11\00:54:06.10 and I'm gonna enter my real existence." 00:54:06.13\00:54:08.01 He says, "I wish that you would all be as courageous 00:54:08.04\00:54:12.69 as I am about to be." 00:54:12.72\00:54:16.11 You see for Socrates death was a friend. 00:54:16.14\00:54:19.83 How different was the case of Jesus 00:54:19.86\00:54:22.92 according to Oscar Coleman? 00:54:22.95\00:54:25.12 He trembled in the Garden of Gethsemane, 00:54:25.15\00:54:27.50 "Father, if You can take away this cup from me. 00:54:27.53\00:54:31.24 Let it be so nevertheless 00:54:31.27\00:54:32.83 not my will be done but Yours Father. 00:54:32.86\00:54:36.55 Jesus did not want to die." 00:54:36.58\00:54:38.92 The Bible says that death is an enemy. 00:54:38.95\00:54:41.13 Death is not a friend. 00:54:41.16\00:54:42.73 If you believe that when you die you go to heaven 00:54:42.76\00:54:44.85 then death would actually be a friend. 00:54:44.88\00:54:47.48 Some people said the Apostle Paul he wanted 00:54:47.51\00:54:49.50 to die so he could be present with the Lord 00:54:49.53\00:54:51.68 then death is not an enemy. 00:54:51.71\00:54:53.99 The Bible says that the last enemy 00:54:54.02\00:54:55.77 to be destroyed will be what? 00:54:55.80\00:54:57.73 "The last enemy to be destroyed will be death. 00:54:57.76\00:55:02.09 And so how different when Jesus surrounded Himself 00:55:02.12\00:55:04.71 with His disciples, He says, 00:55:04.74\00:55:05.90 "I just wish I didn't have to go through with this. 00:55:05.93\00:55:08.72 I wish this cup could pass from me." 00:55:08.75\00:55:11.61 And as He hung on the cross, He says, "My God, 00:55:11.64\00:55:14.51 My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?" 00:55:14.54\00:55:19.22 Totally different then the prospective 00:55:19.25\00:55:21.89 that Socrates had the night in which he drink 00:55:21.92\00:55:26.11 the hemlock and poisoned himself supposedly to deliver his soul. 00:55:26.14\00:55:32.41 Now the good news folks, is that even 00:55:32.44\00:55:36.24 if I should die and even if I should go to sleep 00:55:36.27\00:55:41.43 the Bible says, that if the spirit 00:55:41.46\00:55:45.88 that resurrected Jesus dwells in me that same spirit 00:55:45.91\00:55:50.48 that resurrected Him from the dead 00:55:50.51\00:55:52.50 will resurrect me from a dead as well. 00:55:52.53\00:55:55.42 And that is our hope. 00:55:55.45\00:55:57.49 Notice Romans 8:11, our last text. 00:55:57.52\00:56:01.58 Romans 8:11, "But if the Spirit of Him 00:56:01.61\00:56:06.52 who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, 00:56:06.55\00:56:11.10 He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life 00:56:11.13\00:56:15.21 to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you." 00:56:15.24\00:56:21.59 So even now though we live in a body that corrupts, 00:56:21.62\00:56:25.70 a body that gets old, a body that is subject 00:56:25.73\00:56:29.04 to death the Bible says "that if the Spirit 00:56:29.07\00:56:31.55 that dwelled in Jesus, dwells in us we can gain the victory over 00:56:31.58\00:56:36.43 the sins of the flesh through the Holy Spirit." 00:56:36.46\00:56:39.66 And if we should die, the Bible says, 00:56:39.69\00:56:42.36 "That our hope is found in Jesus Christ." 00:56:42.39\00:56:45.80 Jesus said, "I am the resurrection 00:56:45.83\00:56:48.50 and the life, even if anyone should die, 00:56:48.53\00:56:52.15 yet shall he," what? 00:56:52.18\00:56:53.76 "Yet shall He live." 00:56:53.79\00:56:55.30 And He doesn't say, he shall live 00:56:55.33\00:56:56.60 at the moment of death. 00:56:56.63\00:56:57.73 He says, "And I will raise him up," when? 00:56:57.76\00:57:01.55 "I will raise him up at the last day." 00:57:01.58\00:57:04.87 Folks, the hope of the Christian church 00:57:04.90\00:57:07.16 is not in the immortality of the soul, 00:57:07.19\00:57:09.75 it is in the resurrection of the dead. 00:57:09.78\00:57:11.78 What a glorious day that will be when all of God's children 00:57:11.81\00:57:15.33 will come far from the tomb when Jesus calls never to die again, 00:57:15.36\00:57:20.07 never to suffer again but to live eternally with Jesus 00:57:20.10\00:57:24.51 in that land where joy will never end. Amen. 00:57:24.54\00:57:29.14
