If a man dies, shall he live again? 00:00:01.72\00:00:04.46 What does it mean to be absent from the body 00:00:07.12\00:00:09.79 and present with the Lord? 00:00:09.82\00:00:13.54 Did Jesus go with a thief to paradise on Good Friday? 00:00:13.57\00:00:18.95 Did the souls of dead people 00:00:18.98\00:00:21.37 really cry out from below the altar? 00:00:21.40\00:00:24.07 Pastor Bohr answers these questions 00:00:25.63\00:00:27.46 and more in the amazing series. 00:00:27.49\00:00:30.31 Shall we bow our heads for prayer? 00:00:35.02\00:00:36.18 Father in heaven, what a joy it is to be in Your presence. 00:00:38.35\00:00:42.83 We are so thankful that You have given us Your word 00:00:42.86\00:00:46.52 which is a sure guide in a world 00:00:46.55\00:00:49.15 that seems to be spinning out of control. 00:00:49.18\00:00:53.08 Father, we ask that as we study today 00:00:53.11\00:00:55.76 about two very important words in the Old and New Testament 00:00:55.79\00:01:00.25 that Your Holy Spirit will be with us 00:01:00.28\00:01:02.77 open our minds and our hearts to receive the seed of truth. 00:01:02.80\00:01:06.75 I thank you, Lord, 00:01:06.78\00:01:07.94 for the privilege of speaking your truth. 00:01:07.97\00:01:11.19 I ask Lord that you will give me divine wisdom 00:01:11.22\00:01:14.27 for I ask it in the precious name 00:01:14.30\00:01:16.46 of Jesus our Lord and Savior. Amen. 00:01:16.49\00:01:20.21 Today, we are going to study two very important words 00:01:22.46\00:01:27.31 one in the Old Testament and another in the New Testament. 00:01:27.34\00:01:32.59 However before we get into the study of these two words 00:01:32.62\00:01:36.21 before I tell you what they are I would like to say 00:01:36.24\00:01:39.95 that the New Testament authors had a very frustrating time 00:01:39.98\00:01:46.98 trying to transmit correct ideas about the state of the dead 00:01:47.01\00:01:52.90 and I will explain the reason why. 00:01:52.93\00:01:55.33 The word spirit the word soul and the word Hades, 00:01:55.36\00:02:01.22 which is one of the words that we are going to study tonight, 00:02:01.25\00:02:04.11 were very prevalent and common 00:02:04.14\00:02:06.56 in the world in which the New Testament authors wrote. 00:02:06.59\00:02:10.82 The only problem is those words 00:02:10.85\00:02:13.92 had a different connotation in Greek philosophy. 00:02:13.95\00:02:17.30 You see the word Psyche, the word Pneuma, the word Hades 00:02:17.33\00:02:23.18 were very commonly used by the Greeks 00:02:23.21\00:02:25.66 to express an immortal soul 00:02:25.69\00:02:27.90 and to express a place of eternal burning. 00:02:27.93\00:02:31.61 Now the New Testament authors had to use the same terminology 00:02:31.64\00:02:35.40 because they were writing in Greek. 00:02:35.43\00:02:38.39 However, the words that they used 00:02:38.42\00:02:42.03 were the same as the words in the Greek world 00:02:42.06\00:02:45.05 but the connotation was not the connotation 00:02:45.08\00:02:47.89 of the Greek language, the connotation was 00:02:47.92\00:02:51.55 that of the equivalent Hebrew words in the Old Testament. 00:02:51.58\00:02:56.53 In other words we are not to understand the word Psyche, 00:02:56.56\00:03:00.78 the word Pneuma, and the word Hades. 00:03:00.81\00:03:03.80 In the light of the way it was understood 00:03:03.83\00:03:06.76 by the people in Christ day as a result of Greek philosophy 00:03:06.79\00:03:11.11 these words are to be understood 00:03:11.14\00:03:13.39 according to the Hebrew equivalent in the Old Testament. 00:03:13.42\00:03:17.50 And of course the equivalent of the word Pneuma 00:03:17.53\00:03:20.86 is Ruach and Neshama. 00:03:20.89\00:03:23.69 The equivalent of the word Psyche is Nephesh 00:03:23.72\00:03:26.84 and we are going to notice that the equivalent of the word Hades 00:03:26.87\00:03:30.11 in the Old Testament is Sheol. 00:03:30.14\00:03:32.16 So basically we need to understand 00:03:32.19\00:03:35.42 that the background to these New Testament words 00:03:35.45\00:03:38.36 is not to be found in the way 00:03:38.39\00:03:40.24 they were used in Greek Philosophy, 00:03:40.27\00:03:42.29 it is to be found in the way in which the equivalent words 00:03:42.32\00:03:46.29 were used in the Hebrew language. 00:03:46.32\00:03:49.27 Now, with this in mind I would like to say that 00:03:49.30\00:03:52.37 we are going to study two key words in the Bible. 00:03:52.40\00:03:57.55 One is in the Old Testament 00:03:57.58\00:03:59.71 and the other is in the New Testament. 00:03:59.74\00:04:02.31 Let's take a look first of all 00:04:02.34\00:04:03.90 at the Hebrew word Sheol, that's S-H-E-O-L. 00:04:03.93\00:04:11.06 The Hebrew word Sheol appears approximately 61 times 00:04:11.09\00:04:16.75 or 60 plus times in the Old Testament. 00:04:16.78\00:04:20.86 In the King James Version it is translated 00:04:20.89\00:04:23.79 with the word, grave 30 times. 00:04:23.82\00:04:27.40 It is translated with the word, hell 31 times, 00:04:27.43\00:04:33.26 and a handful of times in the King James Version 00:04:33.29\00:04:37.37 of the Old Testament it is translated, pit. 00:04:37.40\00:04:41.47 The key verses that we want to notice are the 61 times 00:04:41.50\00:04:46.06 where in the King James the word Sheol, 00:04:46.09\00:04:48.78 is translated as grave or as hell. 00:04:48.81\00:04:53.50 Now in the overwhelming majority of the cases 00:04:53.53\00:04:57.32 where the King James translates the word Sheol as hell, 00:04:57.35\00:05:01.77 the King James could have just as well 00:05:01.80\00:05:04.32 translated grave instead of hell. 00:05:04.35\00:05:07.67 We are going to notice that uniformly 00:05:07.70\00:05:09.60 through out the Old Testament this word Sheol 00:05:09.63\00:05:12.84 should really be translated grave or sepulcher. 00:05:12.87\00:05:18.12 But for some strange reason the King James translators 00:05:18.15\00:05:21.44 decided that they were translate 30 references as grave 00:05:21.47\00:05:27.85 and 31 references as hell, 00:05:27.88\00:05:30.24 when really all of the references 00:05:30.27\00:05:32.44 should be translated as grave or sepulcher. 00:05:32.47\00:05:36.59 Now what I would like to do is go through several texts 00:05:36.62\00:05:39.59 that we find in the Old Testament 00:05:39.62\00:05:41.32 where the word Sheol is used and we are going to-- 00:05:41.35\00:05:46.48 we are going to read first of all text 00:05:46.51\00:05:48.98 where the King James translates 00:05:49.01\00:05:51.53 the word Sheol with the word grave. 00:05:51.56\00:05:55.03 Let's got to 1 Samuel 2:6, 1 Samuel 2:6. 00:05:55.06\00:06:02.71 Remember that this is-- 00:06:02.74\00:06:05.48 where the King James translates the word Sheol as grave. 00:06:05.51\00:06:10.94 It says there 00:06:10.97\00:06:13.23 and notice the synonymous parallelism. 00:06:13.26\00:06:15.75 "The Lord kills and makes alive, 00:06:15.78\00:06:21.59 He brings down to the grave and brings up." 00:06:21.62\00:06:25.74 Do you see the synonymous parallelism there? 00:06:25.77\00:06:27.90 The second line repeating 00:06:27.93\00:06:29.31 the same thought of the first line. 00:06:29.34\00:06:31.13 Once again, "The Lord kills and makes alive, 00:06:31.16\00:06:34.57 He brings down to the grave" 00:06:34.60\00:06:36.58 that's the word Sheol "and brings up." 00:06:36.61\00:06:39.48 There the King James translators 00:06:39.51\00:06:41.54 have translated correctly the word Sheol as grave. 00:06:41.57\00:06:45.51 And by the way all of the texts that I am reading 00:06:45.54\00:06:47.81 are from the New King James unless I mention otherwise. 00:06:47.84\00:06:52.60 Now let's go to Psalm 49:14,15, Psalm 49:14,15, 00:06:52.63\00:06:59.55 another verse where the King James 00:06:59.58\00:07:01.53 translates grave, the word Sheol. 00:07:01.56\00:07:04.38 It says there in Psalm 49:14 00:07:04.41\00:07:07.75 "Like sheep they are laid in the grave," 00:07:07.78\00:07:11.60 that's the word Sheol. 00:07:11.63\00:07:13.24 "Like sheep they are laid in the grave, 00:07:13.27\00:07:16.21 death shall feed on them." 00:07:16.24\00:07:18.51 So what happens in the grave, you are what? 00:07:18.54\00:07:20.99 You are dead, that's right, "Death shall feed on them, 00:07:21.02\00:07:25.45 the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning, 00:07:25.48\00:07:28.80 and their beauty shall be consumed in the grave, 00:07:28.83\00:07:32.08 far from their dwelling. 00:07:32.11\00:07:34.69 But God will redeem my soul" 00:07:34.72\00:07:38.06 it's the word Nephesh we studies this word already. 00:07:38.09\00:07:41.11 "God will redeem my soul," that is my life 00:07:41.14\00:07:43.82 "from the power of the--" what? 00:07:43.85\00:07:45.73 "From the power of the grave," there is the word Sheol again, 00:07:45.76\00:07:48.65 "from the power of the grave, for He shall receive me." 00:07:48.68\00:07:53.01 So you will noticed here that 00:07:53.04\00:07:54.98 God is going to redeem his life from where? 00:07:55.01\00:07:58.30 From the grave not from hell, not from a place of a burning 00:07:58.33\00:08:02.59 but from the grave where we are told here 00:08:02.62\00:08:05.62 that death feeds upon them. 00:08:05.65\00:08:08.67 So the King James has translated correctly here 00:08:08.70\00:08:11.37 the word Sheol it means grave. 00:08:11.40\00:08:14.75 Notice Psalm 89:48. 00:08:14.78\00:08:17.37 We are gonna read several text 00:08:17.40\00:08:18.67 because I don't want you to think 00:08:18.70\00:08:20.34 that I am just taking a sampling of text 00:08:20.37\00:08:22.81 that are convenient to my point of view. 00:08:22.84\00:08:25.39 We could actually read all of them 00:08:25.42\00:08:27.39 and you would see that in all of them the word Sheol 00:08:27.42\00:08:31.02 could actually be translated grave or sepulcher. 00:08:31.05\00:08:34.68 Psalm 89:48 00:08:34.71\00:08:38.59 "What man can live and not see death? 00:08:38.62\00:08:44.68 Can he deliver his life" 00:08:44.71\00:08:47.05 by the way that's the word nephesh again. 00:08:47.08\00:08:49.61 It could be translated Soul. 00:08:49.64\00:08:51.31 "Can he deliver his life from the power of the grave?" 00:08:51.34\00:08:56.73 Do you notice the synonymous parallelism again? 00:08:56.76\00:08:59.47 The word grave is coupled with which word? 00:08:59.50\00:09:02.76 It is coupled with the word, death. 00:09:02.79\00:09:05.51 "What man can live and not see death? 00:09:05.54\00:09:09.75 Can he deliver his life from the power of the grave?" 00:09:09.78\00:09:14.30 So once again grave is linked with the word death. 00:09:14.33\00:09:20.05 Notice Ecclesiastes 9:10, Ecclesiastes 9:10. 00:09:20.08\00:09:27.40 This is a very well know verse. 00:09:27.43\00:09:29.20 It's used very frequently by Seventh-day Adventist 00:09:29.23\00:09:31.49 when we are talking about the state of the dead 00:09:31.52\00:09:33.21 it says there, "Whatever your hand finds to do, 00:09:33.24\00:09:37.55 do it with your might, for there is no work or device 00:09:37.58\00:09:43.31 or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going." 00:09:43.34\00:09:49.93 In Sheol where you are going. 00:09:49.96\00:09:52.06 Once again the King James translates correctly grave 00:09:52.09\00:09:54.83 but notice that in the grave 00:09:54.86\00:09:56.64 there is no work no device no knowledge and no wisdom. 00:09:56.67\00:10:01.50 Turn with me now to Isaiah 38:10, 00:10:01.53\00:10:05.23 Isaiah 38:10 and I want you to notice 00:10:05.26\00:10:09.80 how once again the word Sheol is referring to the place 00:10:09.83\00:10:15.77 that people go to when their life is shorten by death. 00:10:15.80\00:10:20.02 It says there "I said, 'In the prime of my life 00:10:20.05\00:10:25.31 I shall go to the gates of Sheol'" 00:10:25.34\00:10:28.01 I want you to remember the word gates 00:10:28.04\00:10:29.33 that's important its linked with the word Sheol. 00:10:29.36\00:10:32.34 And by the way the word Sheol here 00:10:32.37\00:10:34.78 is translated the grave in the King James Version. 00:10:34.81\00:10:38.40 "I said, 'In the prime of my life 00:10:38.43\00:10:40.09 I shall go to the gates of Sheol." 00:10:40.12\00:10:42.84 Now what does that mean to go to the gates of Sheol? 00:10:42.87\00:10:45.15 Notice the explanation. 00:10:45.18\00:10:46.75 "I am deprived of the remainder of my years." 00:10:46.78\00:10:51.55 What does that mean to go to Sheol? 00:10:51.58\00:10:53.09 It means that you are deprived of the remainder of your years. 00:10:53.12\00:10:56.96 In other words you life is shortened 00:10:56.99\00:11:00.03 by the experience of death. 00:11:00.06\00:11:02.75 Notice Isaiah 38:18. 00:11:02.78\00:11:05.83 We are right there so we should be able to read this quickly. 00:11:05.86\00:11:08.38 It says in Isaiah 38:18. 00:11:08.41\00:11:10.95 "For Sheol" this is the New King James 00:11:10.98\00:11:13.43 that actually transliterate the word 00:11:13.46\00:11:16.23 "For Sheol cannot thank You, death cannot praise You, 00:11:16.26\00:11:22.75 those who go down to the pit cannot hope for Your truth." 00:11:22.78\00:11:27.92 Three ideas linked here. 00:11:27.95\00:11:29.90 The word Sheol, the word death and the word pit. 00:11:29.93\00:11:34.81 And you will notice that those who are going to Sheol 00:11:34.84\00:11:36.87 or the grave cannot thank God, they cannot praise God, 00:11:36.90\00:11:42.04 and those who go down to the pit cannot hope for Gods truth. 00:11:42.07\00:11:48.22 Notice Psalms 6:5, Psalms 6:5. 00:11:48.25\00:11:54.21 Once again you have the same idea 00:11:54.24\00:11:56.61 of death being linked with Sheol 00:11:56.64\00:12:00.16 or being linked with the grave. 00:12:00.19\00:12:02.42 It says there in Psalms 6:5, 00:12:02.45\00:12:04.65 "For in death there is no remembrance of You." 00:12:04.68\00:12:09.27 And then notice the synonymous parallelism 00:12:09.30\00:12:12.09 in the second part of the verse. 00:12:12.12\00:12:14.27 Says "For in death there is no remembrance of You. 00:12:14.30\00:12:17.13 In the grave who will give You thanks?" 00:12:17.16\00:12:22.70 And of course the question is what? 00:12:22.73\00:12:24.31 The question is answered how? 00:12:24.34\00:12:26.94 No one will give you thanks in the grave. 00:12:26.97\00:12:30.47 So once again death and grave or Sheol are coupled together. 00:12:30.50\00:12:36.38 Now go with me to Job 14:10-15. 00:12:36.41\00:12:39.81 We are still noticing verses 00:12:39.84\00:12:41.35 where the King James Version translates the word grave. 00:12:41.38\00:12:46.79 And by the way the New King James 00:12:46.82\00:12:48.30 sometimes simply transliterates the word 00:12:48.33\00:12:50.62 and puts Sheol as it appears in the Hebrew. 00:12:50.65\00:12:53.83 Notice Job 14:10-15. 00:12:53.86\00:12:56.70 Here Job is describing his experience. 00:12:56.73\00:12:59.51 "But man dies and is laid away, 00:12:59.54\00:13:04.46 Indeed he breathes his last" 00:13:04.49\00:13:07.54 what happens when a person dies? 00:13:07.57\00:13:09.00 They what? They breathe their last. 00:13:09.03\00:13:12.26 "And where is he?" Is what Job asks. 00:13:12.29\00:13:15.44 "As water disappears from the sea, 00:13:15.47\00:13:18.39 And a river becomes parched and dried up, 00:13:18.42\00:13:23.69 So man lies down" where do you lie down by the way? 00:13:23.72\00:13:28.30 In the grave of course when you die. 00:13:28.33\00:13:31.02 "So man lies down and does not rise." 00:13:31.05\00:13:34.83 Until when? "Till the heavens are no more, 00:13:34.86\00:13:39.50 they will not awake nor be roused from their sleep." 00:13:39.53\00:13:45.19 Is that the hope of resurrection 00:13:45.22\00:13:46.73 according to Job? Absolutely. 00:13:46.76\00:13:49.13 Then he says this "Oh, that You would hide me in the grave," 00:13:49.16\00:13:54.20 that's the word Sheol. 00:13:54.23\00:13:55.42 So did Job in his suffering want to go to Sheol? 00:13:55.45\00:13:59.55 Obviously he didn't want to go to hell. 00:13:59.58\00:14:03.01 He was not saying Oh, that You would hide me in the hell, 00:14:03.04\00:14:05.79 the word Sheol cannot mean hell there 00:14:05.82\00:14:08.04 because Job wouldn't want to go there. 00:14:08.07\00:14:10.21 And so it says, "Oh, that You would hide me in the grave," 00:14:10.24\00:14:13.51 that isn't Sheol "that You would conceal me 00:14:13.54\00:14:16.88 until Your wrath is past, 00:14:16.91\00:14:19.32 that you would appoint me a set time and remember me. 00:14:19.35\00:14:23.76 If a man dies, shall he live again? 00:14:23.79\00:14:27.43 All the days of my hard service I will wait, 00:14:27.46\00:14:31.02 till my change comes. 00:14:31.05\00:14:32.96 You shall call, and I will answer You; 00:14:32.99\00:14:36.55 You shall desire the work of Your hands." 00:14:36.58\00:14:40.77 Glorious passage on the resurrection 00:14:40.80\00:14:43.34 and Job actually in a suffering he is saying, 00:14:43.37\00:14:45.49 oh, Lord, if you would just hide me in Sheol. 00:14:45.52\00:14:49.36 Is he actually begging God to send him to hell? 00:14:49.39\00:14:52.05 Of course not, he is saying 00:14:52.08\00:14:53.17 I wish that you would place me where? 00:14:53.20\00:14:55.77 Resting, sleeping, he speaks about sleep, death as sleep. 00:14:55.80\00:14:59.09 I wish you would put me to sleep in the grave. 00:14:59.12\00:15:01.94 And then when You come and You call 00:15:01.97\00:15:03.92 I would answer Your voice. 00:15:03.95\00:15:06.19 Let's read one more Job 7:9 00:15:06.22\00:15:09.53 where the King James Version translates with the word grave. 00:15:09.56\00:15:14.12 Job 7:9 it says here 00:15:14.15\00:15:19.91 "As the cloud disappears and vanishes away, 00:15:19.94\00:15:25.46 so he who goes down to the grave" 00:15:25.49\00:15:29.94 that is to Sheol "does not come up." 00:15:29.97\00:15:33.81 So when you go to Sheol what happens to you? 00:15:33.84\00:15:36.12 You are like a cloud that disappears and what? 00:15:36.15\00:15:39.09 And Vanishes away, because in the grave 00:15:39.12\00:15:42.26 what happens to our body? We disintegrate. 00:15:42.29\00:15:47.07 Now let's notice a few examples 00:15:47.10\00:15:50.19 where the King James Version translates with the word hell. 00:15:50.22\00:15:54.89 By the way, I'm a great admirer of the King James Version 00:15:54.92\00:15:59.65 but I must say as I have said before 00:15:59.68\00:16:02.23 in previous lectures that when it come to the state of the dead 00:16:02.26\00:16:07.26 the New International Version is a better translation. 00:16:07.29\00:16:10.88 It's closer to the intention that God had 00:16:10.91\00:16:14.81 when he is speaking about the state of man in death. 00:16:14.84\00:16:17.67 Now that doesn't mean that 00:16:17.70\00:16:18.77 everything in the NIV is good and perfect, 00:16:18.80\00:16:21.52 because they leave out several passages, 00:16:21.55\00:16:24.34 they have mistranslations. 00:16:24.37\00:16:25.56 What I am saying is that every translation 00:16:25.59\00:16:28.38 has its pros and its cons. 00:16:28.41\00:16:30.90 But when it comes to the state of the dead 00:16:30.93\00:16:32.77 the King James actually is very confusing 00:16:32.80\00:16:36.55 when it speaks about the word Sheol 00:16:36.58\00:16:38.87 and we will also notice that it's very confusing 00:16:38.90\00:16:40.94 when it comes to the word Hades in the New Testament. 00:16:40.97\00:16:43.64 Now let's notice similar text where the King James 00:16:43.67\00:16:46.33 translates the word Sheol with hell 00:16:46.36\00:16:48.86 and you tell me if the King James translators 00:16:48.89\00:16:51.25 could have used the word grave, just as well. 00:16:51.28\00:16:53.87 Notice Psalm 116:3, Psalm 116:3 00:16:53.90\00:17:01.48 for some unexplained reason the King James translators 00:17:01.51\00:17:04.01 thought that they need to translate 00:17:04.04\00:17:05.61 the word Sheol 31 times with the word hell. 00:17:05.64\00:17:08.66 When it could have very well been translated grave. 00:17:08.69\00:17:11.68 It says in Psalm 116:3, 00:17:11.71\00:17:14.05 "The pains of death surrounded me, 00:17:14.08\00:17:19.02 and the pangs of Sheol laid hold of me, 00:17:19.05\00:17:22.75 I found trouble and sorrow." 00:17:22.78\00:17:25.94 Let me ask you could the word Sheol 00:17:25.97\00:17:27.66 have been very well translated grave there? 00:17:27.69\00:17:30.45 Of course, it's coupled once again with what word? 00:17:30.48\00:17:34.26 Death, just like the other verses. 00:17:34.29\00:17:36.30 So the King James could have said 00:17:36.33\00:17:38.28 "The pains of death surrounded me, 00:17:38.31\00:17:40.06 and the pangs of Sheol" 00:17:40.09\00:17:42.03 which it actually says hell in the King James. 00:17:42.06\00:17:45.42 I'm reading from the New King James 00:17:45.45\00:17:47.09 "has laid hold of me and I found trouble and sorrow." 00:17:47.12\00:17:50.64 Very well the word Sheol could have been 00:17:50.67\00:17:52.91 translated grave there by the King James Version. 00:17:52.94\00:17:56.68 Proverb 7:27, Proverb 7:27. 00:17:56.71\00:18:01.67 I want you to notice the synonymous parallelism 00:18:01.70\00:18:05.79 that we have here in this verse. 00:18:05.82\00:18:08.10 It says there in Proverb 7:27, "Her house" 00:18:08.13\00:18:12.67 speaking about the evil woman, 00:18:12.70\00:18:14.46 the evil and the wicked woman, says, 00:18:14.49\00:18:16.47 "Her house is the way to hell," 00:18:16.50\00:18:21.06 even the New King James translates hell here. 00:18:21.09\00:18:24.04 "Her house is the way to hell," 00:18:24.07\00:18:26.94 better translation would be what? The grave. 00:18:26.97\00:18:30.51 "Descending to the chambers of" what? "Death." 00:18:30.54\00:18:34.67 So once again Sheol is coupled with death. 00:18:34.70\00:18:39.43 It could have very well been translated that 00:18:39.46\00:18:41.69 "Her house is the way to the grave, 00:18:41.72\00:18:46.13 descending to the chambers of death." 00:18:46.16\00:18:48.80 There is no need to link this with hell, or to link it fire. 00:18:48.83\00:18:53.40 Notice Proverbs 5:5, Proverbs 5:5. 00:18:53.43\00:18:59.39 And I want you to underline, 00:18:59.42\00:19:01.24 the synonymous parallelism again. 00:19:01.27\00:19:04.04 It says there speaking about the strange woman 00:19:04.07\00:19:06.90 who tries to entice men into sin. 00:19:06.93\00:19:09.39 It says, "Her feet go down to death, 00:19:09.42\00:19:15.25 her steps lay hold of hell." 00:19:15.28\00:19:20.78 Once again death and Sheol are linked together, 00:19:20.81\00:19:24.67 would it be proper to translate this 00:19:24.70\00:19:26.91 "Her feet go down to death, her step lay hold of the grave." 00:19:26.94\00:19:34.85 Yes, once again the two ideas are I linked together. 00:19:34.88\00:19:38.72 By the way do you notice that feet go down to death 00:19:38.75\00:19:41.53 is the same as her steps lay hold of hell. 00:19:41.56\00:19:44.66 It is a synonymous parallelism. 00:19:44.69\00:19:47.55 Notice Proverbs 15:24, Proverbs 15:24 00:19:47.58\00:19:53.53 and here we have antithetical parallelism. 00:19:53.56\00:19:56.96 Another words, what is said in the first line 00:19:56.99\00:19:58.89 the opposite is said in the second line. 00:19:58.92\00:20:02.11 It says there in Proverbs 15:24, 00:20:02.14\00:20:04.75 "The way of life winds upward for the wise, 00:20:04.78\00:20:11.57 that he may turn away" from where "from hell below". 00:20:11.60\00:20:18.12 Could that have been translated form the grave below? 00:20:18.15\00:20:22.22 Of course, the contrast is between above and below. 00:20:22.25\00:20:26.48 The contrast is not between heaven and hell. 00:20:26.51\00:20:30.94 And so it says, "The way of life winds upward for the wise, 00:20:30.97\00:20:36.95 that he may turn away from the grave below." 00:20:36.98\00:20:41.46 Notice Isaiah 28:15, Isaiah 28:15. 00:20:41.49\00:20:48.34 Again notice the synonymous parallelism in this verse. 00:20:48.37\00:20:52.65 It says in Isaiah 28:15, "Because you have said, 00:20:52.68\00:20:59.19 we have made a covenant with death, 00:20:59.22\00:21:04.00 and with Sheol we are in agreement." 00:21:04.03\00:21:11.21 The New King James transliterates Sheol 00:21:11.24\00:21:14.11 but the King James Version translates hell. 00:21:14.14\00:21:16.53 In another words the King James says 00:21:16.56\00:21:17.79 we have made a covenant with death, 00:21:17.82\00:21:20.07 and with hell we are in agreement. 00:21:20.10\00:21:22.85 But the fact is that the phrase, 00:21:22.88\00:21:25.41 we have made a covenant with death, 00:21:25.44\00:21:28.86 is exactly parallel to with Sheol we are in agreement. 00:21:28.89\00:21:33.74 A covenant is a what? Is an agreement. 00:21:33.77\00:21:37.81 And once again the idea of Sheol is connected 00:21:37.84\00:21:40.55 not with life in hell it's connected with what? 00:21:40.58\00:21:44.12 With death in that verse once again. 00:21:44.15\00:21:47.11 let's read two more verses 00:21:47.14\00:21:52.05 and then we move on to the New Testament. 00:21:52.08\00:21:54.28 Amos 9:2, 00:21:54.31\00:21:58.39 speaking about the wicked in Israel 00:21:58.42\00:22:02.41 that says, though they dig into hell. 00:22:02.44\00:22:06.55 By the way where do we dig into? 00:22:06.58\00:22:09.14 We dig to open up a hole for the grave, right? 00:22:09.17\00:22:13.03 So it says, "Though they dig into" 00:22:13.06\00:22:15.84 and the New King, the King James Version 00:22:15.87\00:22:17.86 and the New King James version says hell there. 00:22:17.89\00:22:20.34 Could it be translated the grave? Of course it could. 00:22:20.37\00:22:23.99 "Though they dig into grave, 00:22:24.02\00:22:26.52 from there My hand shall take them, 00:22:26.55\00:22:29.21 though they climb up to heaven, 00:22:29.24\00:22:31.20 from there I will bring them down." 00:22:31.23\00:22:34.93 Very acceptable to translate the word Sheol here 00:22:34.96\00:22:39.31 not hell like the King James Version 00:22:39.34\00:22:42.06 and the New King James Version do 00:22:42.09\00:22:44.56 but rather translate grave. 00:22:44.59\00:22:47.77 One further verse Jonah 2:2, Jonah 2:2. 00:22:47.80\00:22:54.05 Here Jonah is in the belly of the fish. 00:22:54.08\00:22:56.61 And by the way he is not dead, he is crying out to the Lord 00:22:56.64\00:22:59.73 and notice what he says in Jonah2:2, and he said, 00:22:59.76\00:23:06.47 "I cried out to the Lord because of my affliction, 00:23:06.50\00:23:10.49 and He answered me. 00:23:10.52\00:23:12.38 Out of the belly of Sheol" 00:23:12.41\00:23:15.56 that's translated hell in the King James Version. 00:23:15.59\00:23:19.74 "Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, 00:23:19.77\00:23:22.94 and You heard my voice." 00:23:22.97\00:23:24.30 Was Jonah in hell at that point? 00:23:24.33\00:23:27.45 No, he was in the belly of a great fish. 00:23:27.48\00:23:30.25 It was dark down there. It was like he was where? 00:23:30.28\00:23:34.13 He was in a living grave if you please. 00:23:34.16\00:23:38.14 So he was not in hell. 00:23:38.17\00:23:39.89 A proper translation would be "Out of the belly of the grave 00:23:39.92\00:23:44.70 I cried, and You heard my voice." 00:23:44.73\00:23:47.11 And by the way we know that its the grave 00:23:47.14\00:23:48.93 because Jesus referred to this later on about speaking 00:23:48.96\00:23:52.45 when he spoke about being in the heart of the earth 00:23:52.48\00:23:54.59 for three days and for three nights. 00:23:54.62\00:23:57.34 Now, let's notice what the New Testament 00:23:57.37\00:23:59.88 has to say about the word Sheol. 00:23:59.91\00:24:03.00 And you say well pastor, but the word Sheol is in Hebrew, 00:24:03.03\00:24:06.90 the New Testament wouldn't use that same Hebrew word? 00:24:06.93\00:24:09.79 Obviously not, but the New Testament has 00:24:09.82\00:24:12.73 an exactly equivalent Greek word to the word Sheol. 00:24:12.76\00:24:17.76 And you say, which word is equivalent 00:24:17.79\00:24:20.88 to the word Sheol from the Old Testament? 00:24:20.91\00:24:23.42 Well, before I tell you let me give you some statistics. 00:24:23.45\00:24:27.03 The word Hades which is the word 00:24:27.06\00:24:30.38 that we are going to refer to 00:24:30.41\00:24:32.06 is used 11 times in the New Testament. 00:24:32.09\00:24:36.87 Only once in those 11 times 00:24:36.90\00:24:40.21 in the Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus 00:24:40.24\00:24:42.22 which we have already discussed in this series 00:24:42.25\00:24:44.91 where Jesus is not trying to teach truth. 00:24:44.94\00:24:47.34 He is using the ideas of the people to express an idea 00:24:47.37\00:24:53.77 He is using their view of Hades and of hell. 00:24:53.80\00:24:57.83 He doesn't believe it He is using 00:24:57.86\00:24:59.93 their frame of reference to teach the truth. 00:24:59.96\00:25:02.34 Only in that one reference 00:25:02.37\00:25:04.08 do you find the word Hades linked 00:25:04.11\00:25:08.07 or connected with a place of burning. 00:25:08.10\00:25:12.31 Actually in all of the other 10 references 00:25:12.34\00:25:15.10 the word Hades could be translated with grave. 00:25:15.13\00:25:20.74 Now let me tell you something 00:25:20.77\00:25:21.92 about the New King James Version. 00:25:21.95\00:25:23.98 The New King James Version 00:25:24.01\00:25:25.98 transliterates the word Hades all the 11 times. 00:25:26.01\00:25:30.57 In other words it doesn't translate the word 00:25:30.60\00:25:32.50 it simply puts Hades when that word appears. 00:25:32.53\00:25:36.22 The King James Version on the other hand 00:25:36.25\00:25:38.98 10 times translates the words Hades, hell 00:25:39.01\00:25:44.51 and only one time does the King James Version 00:25:44.54\00:25:47.66 translate the word Hades with grave. 00:25:47.69\00:25:51.92 Let's talk for a moment about the New International Version 00:25:51.95\00:25:55.50 of the 11 times, that the word Hades 00:25:55.53\00:25:58.08 appears in the New Testament 00:25:58.11\00:25:59.63 twice the New International Version 00:25:59.66\00:26:03.07 translates deaths three times. 00:26:03.10\00:26:07.10 The New International Version translates 00:26:07.13\00:26:09.36 the word Hades with the word grave 00:26:09.39\00:26:13.16 and five times the New International Version 00:26:13.19\00:26:15.83 translates the word Hades- 00:26:15.86\00:26:17.85 actually it doesn't even translate it, 00:26:17.88\00:26:19.40 it transliterates the word. 00:26:19.43\00:26:21.64 And only once in the New International Version 00:26:21.67\00:26:24.74 is the word Hades translated hell 00:26:24.77\00:26:28.22 and that's in the story of the Rich Man and Lazarus. 00:26:28.25\00:26:31.79 So its interesting that the NIV translates the word Hades 00:26:31.82\00:26:36.19 10 times differently than hell 00:26:36.22\00:26:39.53 and only one time hell was the King James Version 00:26:39.56\00:26:42.72 translates the word 10 times hell 00:26:42.75\00:26:45.22 and one time differently than the word hell 00:26:45.25\00:26:48.07 it translates it with the word grave. 00:26:48.10\00:26:51.34 Now you say, how do we know, Pastor Bohr, 00:26:51.37\00:26:53.73 that the word Sheol in the Old Testament 00:26:53.76\00:26:56.30 is equivalent to the word Hades in the New Testament? 00:26:56.33\00:27:00.27 It's very simple. 00:27:00.30\00:27:01.55 You see there are two texts in the New Testament 00:27:01.58\00:27:04.73 that allude to or quote verses from the Old Testament. 00:27:04.76\00:27:10.51 So when you go to the New Testament 00:27:10.54\00:27:12.24 and you read those verse 00:27:12.27\00:27:13.69 that are quoted from the Old Testament 00:27:13.72\00:27:15.21 you can know what word in Greek 00:27:15.24\00:27:18.77 is equivalent to the Hebrew Sheol. 00:27:18.80\00:27:21.19 Now, let's go to our first text that uses the word Sheol 00:27:21.22\00:27:24.48 and then we will go to the New Testament text 00:27:24.51\00:27:26.66 where this same verse is used but in the Greek language. 00:27:26.69\00:27:30.88 It says in Hosea 13:14 00:27:30.91\00:27:34.60 if you go with me Hosea 13:14 the following, 00:27:34.63\00:27:41.39 "I will ransom them from the power of the grave," 00:27:41.42\00:27:46.03 that's the word Sheol incidentally 00:27:46.06\00:27:49.51 "I will redeem them from death." 00:27:49.54\00:27:51.99 See the synonymous parallelism again, 00:27:52.02\00:27:54.29 He is going to redeem them from the power-- 00:27:54.32\00:27:56.34 ransom them from the power of the grave that Sheol. 00:27:56.37\00:27:59.07 I will redeem them from death and then notice this 00:27:59.10\00:28:02.06 "O Death, I will be your plagues! 00:28:02.09\00:28:05.80 O Grave," that is O Sheol "I will be your destruction. 00:28:05.83\00:28:10.57 Pity is hidden from My eyes." 00:28:10.60\00:28:13.46 So notice here that you have, 00:28:13.49\00:28:16.93 "O Death, I will be your plagues 00:28:16.96\00:28:18.57 O Grave, I will be your destruction". 00:28:18.60\00:28:21.51 Now let's go to 1 Corinthians 15:54, 55, 00:28:21.54\00:28:27.01 1 Corinthians 15:54, 55 where this verse in Hosea 00:28:27.04\00:28:32.04 is very clearly alluded to. 00:28:32.07\00:28:34.61 1 Corinthians 15:54 and 55, 00:28:34.64\00:28:38.74 "So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, 00:28:38.77\00:28:43.26 and this mortal has put on immortality, 00:28:43.29\00:28:46.76 then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, 00:28:46.79\00:28:50.05 'Death is swallowed up in victory.' 00:28:50.08\00:28:53.52 O Death, where is your sting? 00:28:53.55\00:28:56.38 O Hades, where is your victory?" 00:28:56.41\00:29:00.49 Do you see the allusion to Hosea 13:14? 00:29:00.52\00:29:04.62 It's interesting when it says "O Death, where is your sting?" 00:29:04.65\00:29:08.79 Death is used in Hosea Chapter 13. 00:29:08.82\00:29:11.58 But instead of the word Sheol the second word that is used 00:29:11.61\00:29:15.41 in verse 55 of 1 Corinthians is 00:29:15.44\00:29:18.02 "O Hades, where is your victory?" 00:29:18.05\00:29:21.49 And by the way this is the only verse 00:29:21.52\00:29:23.96 that the King James Version translates with the word, grave. 00:29:23.99\00:29:28.42 1 Corinthians 15:55, because they knew 00:29:28.45\00:29:32.74 that it would be foolish to say, O hell, where is your victory? 00:29:32.77\00:29:36.63 As if somehow the righteous had been in hell 00:29:36.66\00:29:39.87 and Jesus had come to rescue them from hell. 00:29:39.90\00:29:42.16 So they knew that they had to translate 00:29:42.19\00:29:44.25 the word Hades here with grave 00:29:44.28\00:29:46.11 but the other 10 times that translate the word Hades 00:29:46.14\00:29:49.12 in the King James Version with the word hell. 00:29:49.15\00:29:51.60 So it become very complicated 00:29:51.63\00:29:53.16 for people who are reading the Bible 00:29:53.19\00:29:54.81 because they assume that Sheol and Hades are a place 00:29:54.84\00:29:58.88 where people are sent to burn. 00:29:58.91\00:30:01.23 Now notice the other text in the New Testament 00:30:01.26\00:30:04.43 that is actually quoting from a passage in the Old Testament. 00:30:04.46\00:30:09.64 Let's go to the Old Testament passage first 00:30:09.67\00:30:11.91 and then we will go to the New Testament passage. 00:30:11.94\00:30:14.61 Psalms 16:8-10, Psalms 16:8-10. 00:30:14.64\00:30:20.83 This is a Masonic prophecy about the resurrection of Jesus. 00:30:20.86\00:30:25.06 It says here "I have set the Lord always before me, 00:30:25.09\00:30:29.38 because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved. 00:30:29.41\00:30:33.45 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices, 00:30:33.48\00:30:37.50 my flesh" notice, "my flesh also will rest in hope." 00:30:37.53\00:30:43.73 Jesus is speaking prophetically. 00:30:43.76\00:30:45.43 He says, my flesh will also rest in hope. 00:30:45.46\00:30:48.80 Verse 10 "For You will not leave my soul in soul," 00:30:48.83\00:30:52.72 that's the word Nephesh that we studied, 00:30:52.75\00:30:55.13 "You will not leave my soul in sheol" 00:30:55.16\00:30:58.39 it says in the New King James. 00:30:58.42\00:30:59.97 By the way in the King James it says, 00:31:00.00\00:31:02.06 "You will not leave my soul in Hell, 00:31:02.09\00:31:05.60 Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption." 00:31:05.63\00:31:10.99 Now I want you to notice the synonymous parallelism 00:31:11.02\00:31:13.58 that we have in this verse. 00:31:13.61\00:31:16.31 Notice that "thou will not leave my soul in hell," 00:31:16.34\00:31:22.81 is parallel to "thou will not leave the holy one to see" 00:31:22.84\00:31:27.94 what? "Corruption." 00:31:27.97\00:31:29.82 So what is it that you see in hell? 00:31:29.85\00:31:32.88 Supposedly you see what? Corruption. 00:31:32.91\00:31:35.50 Now what is it that corrupts? It is the body. 00:31:35.53\00:31:40.98 Did you notice that Jesus said "My flesh will rest in hope" 00:31:41.01\00:31:46.10 because it will not see corruption. 00:31:46.13\00:31:48.31 Now the New International Version 00:31:48.34\00:31:50.58 translates this correctly, It says, 00:31:50.61\00:31:54.80 "You will not leave me in the grave 00:31:54.83\00:31:58.74 and you will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption." 00:31:58.77\00:32:03.09 So in other words the soul is Jesus, 00:32:03.12\00:32:05.56 the person of Jesus 00:32:05.59\00:32:06.95 and the word Hades is translated the grave. 00:32:06.98\00:32:11.44 Jesus is saying, you are not going to leave me in the grave 00:32:11.47\00:32:14.48 and I my flesh is not going to see what? 00:32:14.51\00:32:17.50 Is not going to see corruption. 00:32:17.53\00:32:20.02 Now let's notice how this passage 00:32:20.05\00:32:21.98 is quoted in the New Testament. 00:32:22.01\00:32:24.27 Go with me to Acts 2:25-27. 00:32:24.30\00:32:28.07 This is on the Day of Pentecost, 00:32:28.10\00:32:30.15 the Apostle Peter is preaching his Pentecostal sermon 00:32:30.18\00:32:33.01 and it says there in Acts 2:25 00:32:33.04\00:32:39.16 "For David says concerning Him," 00:32:39.19\00:32:41.72 that is concerning Jesus, "'I foresaw the Lord 00:32:41.75\00:32:45.62 always before my face, for He is at my right hand, 00:32:45.65\00:32:50.32 that I may not be shaken, therefore my heart rejoiced, 00:32:50.35\00:32:54.33 and my tongue was glad, 00:32:54.36\00:32:55.88 moreover my flesh also will rest in hope. 00:32:55.91\00:33:00.21 For" why will his flesh rest in hope? 00:33:00.24\00:33:02.79 "For You will not leave my soul in Hades," 00:33:02.82\00:33:07.66 this is the New King James, or as the NIV says, 00:33:07.69\00:33:12.22 "You will not leave me in Hades, 00:33:12.25\00:33:15.06 nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption." 00:33:15.09\00:33:18.83 Now did you notice that the word that is used in Psalm 16 00:33:18.86\00:33:23.30 where it says, "You will not leave my soul in Sheol" 00:33:23.33\00:33:27.84 the equivalent in the New Testament is, 00:33:27.87\00:33:30.41 "You will not leave my soul in Hades." 00:33:30.44\00:33:32.90 So the question is, is Sheol equivalent to the word Hades? 00:33:32.93\00:33:37.00 Of course, in two different languages. 00:33:37.03\00:33:41.03 Now let's notice other references 00:33:41.06\00:33:43.29 to the word Hades in the New Testament. 00:33:43.32\00:33:46.26 We have noticed two of them, we read from 1 Corinthians 15. 00:33:46.29\00:33:50.28 We also read from the passage in Psalm 16. 00:33:50.31\00:33:55.43 But now let's notice the other references 00:33:55.46\00:33:57.57 to Hades in the New Testament. 00:33:57.60\00:33:59.36 Go with me to Revelation 6:8 00:33:59.39\00:34:01.84 and you are going to notice that the word Hades 00:34:01.87\00:34:03.77 like in the Old Testament is coupled with death. 00:34:03.80\00:34:07.81 It says there in Revelation 6:8 00:34:07.84\00:34:10.55 speaking about the fourth horse of Revelation. 00:34:10.58\00:34:13.69 Says "So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. 00:34:13.72\00:34:18.36 And the name of him who sat on it was Death, 00:34:18.39\00:34:22.82 and Hades followed him." 00:34:22.85\00:34:26.01 You will notice that the New King James 00:34:26.04\00:34:27.49 simply transliterates the word Hades. 00:34:27.52\00:34:30.81 Could this very well be translated, 00:34:30.84\00:34:32.85 "Him who sat on it was Death, and grave followed with him." 00:34:32.88\00:34:38.27 Of course, what is that that follows after death? 00:34:38.30\00:34:40.59 What comes immediately after death? 00:34:40.62\00:34:42.15 You are what? You are buried in the grave. 00:34:42.18\00:34:45.18 And then of course it says, "And power was given to them 00:34:45.21\00:34:49.19 over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, 00:34:49.22\00:34:51.42 with hunger, and with death, and by the beasts of the earth." 00:34:51.45\00:34:54.80 And so once again the word Hades here 00:34:54.83\00:34:57.37 can very well be translated as grave. 00:34:57.40\00:35:01.20 Notice Matthew 16:18, Matthew 16:18. 00:35:01.23\00:35:08.18 This is the famous verse where Jesus is speaking to Peter 00:35:08.21\00:35:14.27 about the keys of the kingdom. 00:35:14.30\00:35:16.35 Notice Matthew 16:18, 00:35:16.38\00:35:19.95 "And I also say to you that you are Peter, 00:35:19.98\00:35:24.24 and on this rock I will build My church." 00:35:24.27\00:35:27.09 Jesus is not saying that Peter is the rock, 00:35:27.12\00:35:29.16 Jesus is saying, you are Peter 00:35:29.19\00:35:31.36 you are a little pebble but upon this rock, 00:35:31.39\00:35:34.39 that is upon myself I will build my church. 00:35:34.42\00:35:39.51 And then it says, "And the gates of Hades" 00:35:39.54\00:35:42.31 do you remember that text from the Old Testament 00:35:42.34\00:35:44.18 that I told you to remember? The gates of Sheol. 00:35:44.21\00:35:46.70 Now we find a text in the New Testament 00:35:46.73\00:35:48.38 that speaks about the gates of Hades. 00:35:48.41\00:35:50.86 "And the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it." 00:35:50.89\00:35:55.28 Let me ask you why is it that the gates of Hades 00:35:55.31\00:35:58.94 will not prevail against the church? 00:35:58.97\00:36:00.57 If you look at the context it's because Jesus says 00:36:00.60\00:36:02.96 I am going to Jerusalem, I am going to die 00:36:02.99\00:36:05.31 and I am going to resurrect the third day. 00:36:05.34\00:36:07.66 Therefore the church is gonna rebuilt upon a living person, 00:36:07.69\00:36:11.35 one who died and yet is alive. 00:36:11.38\00:36:14.47 So this can very well be translated 00:36:14.50\00:36:16.59 the gates of the grave or the gates of the sepulcher 00:36:16.62\00:36:22.03 will not be able to prevail against it 00:36:22.06\00:36:24.09 because I died and I resurrected. 00:36:24.12\00:36:28.11 Notice Luke 10:15 00:36:28.14\00:36:30.18 another reference to Hades in the New Testament. 00:36:30.21\00:36:33.77 Luke 10:15, Jesus is speaking here 00:36:33.80\00:36:39.09 about the Capernaum and He says, 00:36:39.12\00:36:41.59 "And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, will be" 00:36:41.62\00:36:47.57 what? "Thrust down to Hades". 00:36:47.60\00:36:52.50 The King James Version says, 00:36:52.53\00:36:54.12 "You will be thrust down to Hell". 00:36:54.15\00:36:57.99 But what is Jesus really saying? 00:36:58.02\00:37:00.05 He is saying though you exalted yourself to heaven, 00:37:00.08\00:37:02.13 you would be thrust down to the grave, the place of death. 00:37:02.16\00:37:08.37 The word there is Hades. 00:37:08.40\00:37:11.48 Let me ask you what are the two main 00:37:11.51\00:37:13.88 characteristics of the grave? 00:37:13.91\00:37:17.11 That it has two great characteristics 00:37:17.14\00:37:19.03 number one it is a place of absolute silence 00:37:19.06\00:37:24.18 and secondly it is a place of perfect darkness. 00:37:24.21\00:37:28.64 Let's read a couple of verses on that. 00:37:28.67\00:37:30.61 Go with me to Psalm 115:17, 00:37:30.64\00:37:34.79 Psalm 115:17 it says there, 00:37:34.82\00:37:41.96 "The dead do not praise the Lord, 00:37:41.99\00:37:47.14 nor any who go down into" what? "Into silence." 00:37:47.17\00:37:54.46 Notice Job 17:13, 14, Job 17:13, 14. 00:37:54.49\00:38:01.71 It says there, "If I wait for the grave" that Sheol, 00:38:01.74\00:38:06.54 "as my house, if I make my bed" 00:38:06.57\00:38:10.76 In what? "In darkness. 00:38:10.79\00:38:14.85 If I say to corruption, 'You are my father,' 00:38:14.88\00:38:18.79 and to the worm, 'You are my mother and my sister.'" 00:38:18.82\00:38:22.92 So what happens when you go down to Sheol or the grave? 00:38:22.95\00:38:26.25 You are in absolute what? 00:38:26.28\00:38:27.76 Absolute silence and absolute darkness 00:38:27.79\00:38:31.57 and the Bible says that the worms are there. 00:38:31.60\00:38:35.72 Now what do the worms eat? Do they eat your soul? 00:38:35.75\00:38:39.44 Of course, not. They eat the body. 00:38:39.47\00:38:42.21 They eat the person, right. 00:38:42.24\00:38:43.96 The material substance of the person. 00:38:43.99\00:38:47.05 Now I want you to image just for a few moments 00:38:47.08\00:38:50.68 the analogy that I want to share with you about the grave. 00:38:50.71\00:38:57.09 I want you to imagine, that Satan is the jailer, 00:38:57.12\00:39:01.62 the grave is the jail, the dead are the prisoners. 00:39:01.65\00:39:07.36 By the way this is a biblical analogy. 00:39:07.39\00:39:09.19 The dead are the prisoners. 00:39:09.22\00:39:11.09 The jailer is inside the grave and he has the keys inside. 00:39:11.12\00:39:18.37 And he says to Jesus, 00:39:18.40\00:39:20.05 I dare You to come here in here and grab the keys. 00:39:20.08\00:39:23.32 And what does Jesus do? 00:39:25.33\00:39:27.70 Jesus dies, He goes into the grave, 00:39:27.73\00:39:33.36 metaphorically grabs the keys from the jailer. 00:39:33.39\00:39:37.60 He says, give those keys. 00:39:37.63\00:39:39.60 And unlocks the door from inside and comes out. 00:39:39.63\00:39:44.12 Now you say, is that a biblical analogy? 00:39:44.15\00:39:46.51 It most certainly is. Notice Revelation 1:17,18. 00:39:46.54\00:39:51.66 Revelation 1:17, 18. 00:39:51.69\00:39:54.20 No mater how silent and dark the grave is, 00:39:54.23\00:39:57.70 Jesus the Bible tells us, has the keys 00:39:57.73\00:40:01.43 and the word Hades is used in these two verses 00:40:01.46\00:40:04.96 that we are going to read now. 00:40:04.99\00:40:06.05 Revelation 1:17, 18, 00:40:06.08\00:40:09.76 "And when I saw Him, I fell at dead at his feet. 00:40:09.79\00:40:13.94 But He laid His right hand on me, saying to me, 00:40:13.97\00:40:16.97 "Do not be afraid, I am the First and the Last. 00:40:17.00\00:40:21.37 I am He" who what? 00:40:21.40\00:40:24.29 "Who lives, and was dead, and behold, 00:40:24.32\00:40:29.36 I am alive forevermore. Amen." 00:40:29.39\00:40:33.82 And now notice "And I have the keys of Hades and of Death." 00:40:33.85\00:40:40.91 What is Jesus saying? 00:40:40.94\00:40:42.09 He is saying. I have the keys of where? 00:40:42.12\00:40:44.47 I have the keys of grave and of the death. 00:40:44.50\00:40:48.46 Listen folks, when Jesus Christ went into the grave 00:40:48.49\00:40:51.20 the devil dared Him. 00:40:51.23\00:40:52.33 He said, I dare You to die in coming to the grave. 00:40:52.36\00:40:55.64 Jesus says, okay, I'll accept your dare. 00:40:55.67\00:40:57.68 So Jesus dies, He goes into the grave, 00:40:57.71\00:41:00.28 He grabs the keys, 00:41:00.31\00:41:02.17 He opens the door from the inside 00:41:02.20\00:41:04.59 and He comes out and He says 00:41:04.62\00:41:06.08 I am the resurrection and the life 00:41:06.11\00:41:08.45 because I live, you will live also. 00:41:08.48\00:41:12.10 Jesus doesn't have the keys to hell, 00:41:12.13\00:41:14.69 as if He opens and closes hell 00:41:14.72\00:41:17.14 and keeps people burning and then lets them out 00:41:17.17\00:41:19.89 when they are burning. 00:41:19.92\00:41:20.95 As if the Bible talks some idea of purgatory? 00:41:20.98\00:41:24.13 Absolutely not. 00:41:24.16\00:41:25.91 When Revelation 1:17, 18 says that Jesus 00:41:25.94\00:41:28.51 Jesus has the keys of Hades, 00:41:28.54\00:41:30.40 it means that He has the keys to what? 00:41:30.43\00:41:33.33 He has the keys to the grave. 00:41:33.36\00:41:36.54 Notice Revelation 1:5, Revelation 1:5. 00:41:36.57\00:41:43.14 We have a very interesting expression here about Jesus. 00:41:43.17\00:41:46.81 Revelation 1:5 it says, 00:41:46.84\00:41:49.46 "And from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness," 00:41:49.49\00:41:53.63 the what? 00:41:53.66\00:41:55.52 "The firstborn from the dead, 00:41:55.55\00:41:58.39 and the ruler over the kings of the earth." 00:41:58.42\00:42:01.93 Now it says, Jesus is the first born from the dead. 00:42:01.96\00:42:04.57 Was Jesus is the first person to resurrect from the dead? 00:42:04.60\00:42:08.08 No, we had three people in the Old Testament 00:42:08.11\00:42:10.59 that resurrected from the dead. 00:42:10.62\00:42:12.39 We have of course Mosses, 00:42:12.42\00:42:14.91 we have also the widow's son in the days of Elijah 00:42:14.94\00:42:18.83 and we have that strange episode 00:42:18.86\00:42:20.67 where an individual was thrown into a pit 00:42:20.70\00:42:22.53 and he touched the bones of Elijah and he resurrected. 00:42:22.56\00:42:26.14 In the New Testament before Jesus died 00:42:26.17\00:42:28.18 and resurrected there were also three resurrections. 00:42:28.21\00:42:31.92 The son of widow of Nain resurrected, 00:42:31.95\00:42:35.84 Jarius daughter and Lazarus were resurrected by Jesus. 00:42:35.87\00:42:40.20 So first born from the dead doesn't mean 00:42:40.23\00:42:42.77 that Jesus is the first to resurrect. 00:42:42.80\00:42:44.89 What this expression means is that 00:42:44.92\00:42:47.32 the death and resurrection of Jesus determines 00:42:47.35\00:42:51.20 the possibility of us resurrecting if we should die. 00:42:51.23\00:42:56.19 In other words, our hope is centered in Him 00:42:56.22\00:42:58.50 because Jesus went into the grave, 00:42:58.53\00:43:00.46 He grabs the keys and now He can open the grave 00:43:00.49\00:43:03.46 for His children who died in Christ. 00:43:03.49\00:43:07.43 The Bible tells us that the hope of God's people 00:43:07.46\00:43:09.87 is not found in some immortal soul that fly's off 00:43:09.90\00:43:13.55 to heaven at the moment of death. 00:43:13.58\00:43:15.75 The Bible tells us that the hope of the Christian is found 00:43:15.78\00:43:18.86 in the resurrection of the dead 00:43:18.89\00:43:20.67 not the immortality of the soul. 00:43:20.70\00:43:23.23 Go with me to 1 Corinthians 15:16-22, 00:43:23.26\00:43:28.11 1 Corinthians 15:16-22. 00:43:28.14\00:43:32.20 Notice that the resurrection is the key to eternal life. 00:43:32.23\00:43:37.30 If when we died our soul flew off to heaven 00:43:37.33\00:43:40.69 and our soul were immortal what importance 00:43:40.72\00:43:43.42 would there be that Jesus should die 00:43:43.45\00:43:45.42 and resurrect to give us life 00:43:45.45\00:43:47.31 if we already have immortal life 00:43:47.34\00:43:49.25 with in ourselves which we don't. 00:43:49.28\00:43:51.86 It says there in 1 Corinthians 15, 00:43:51.89\00:43:54.12 "For if the dead do not rise, then Christ is not risen. 00:43:54.15\00:43:58.09 And if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile, 00:43:58.12\00:44:01.09 you are still in your sins! 00:44:01.12\00:44:02.94 Then also those who have fallen asleep 00:44:02.97\00:44:05.40 in Christ have perished." 00:44:05.43\00:44:08.91 How could they have perished 00:44:08.94\00:44:10.10 if supposedly they went to heaven when they died? 00:44:10.13\00:44:12.71 Makes no sense. 00:44:12.74\00:44:14.28 Verse 19, "If in this life only we have hope in Christ, 00:44:14.31\00:44:18.51 we are of all men the most pitiable, 00:44:18.54\00:44:21.49 but now Christ is risen from the dead, 00:44:21.52\00:44:25.53 and has become the first fruits" there it is again, 00:44:25.56\00:44:28.42 "of those who have fallen asleep. 00:44:28.45\00:44:30.58 For since by man came death, 00:44:30.61\00:44:32.59 by Man also came the resurrection of the dead, 00:44:32.62\00:44:35.44 for as in Adam all die, 00:44:35.47\00:44:37.84 even so in Christ all shall be made alive." 00:44:37.87\00:44:42.56 In fact you have some what of a paradox in the idea 00:44:42.59\00:44:47.15 that Jesus overcame death by death. 00:44:47.18\00:44:51.70 By the way how do you neutralize 00:44:51.73\00:44:53.30 the venom of a serpent? 00:44:53.33\00:44:56.00 You neutralize it by using anti-venom. 00:44:56.03\00:44:58.37 And what is anti-venom made from? 00:44:58.40\00:45:01.00 It is made from venom. 00:45:01.03\00:45:02.57 In other word venom over comes and conquers venom. 00:45:02.60\00:45:07.23 Jesus by death over came death. 00:45:07.26\00:45:10.31 Notice Hebrews 2:14, 5, 00:45:10.34\00:45:14.65 Hebrews 2:14, 15. 00:45:14.68\00:45:20.04 It says there, "Inasmuch then 00:45:20.07\00:45:22.52 as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, 00:45:22.55\00:45:27.11 He Himself likewise shared in the same," 00:45:27.14\00:45:31.01 and here comes the key portion. 00:45:31.04\00:45:32.75 "That through death He might destroy him 00:45:32.78\00:45:36.88 who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 00:45:36.91\00:45:40.36 and release those who through fear of death 00:45:40.39\00:45:43.46 were all their lifetime subject to bondage." 00:45:43.49\00:45:47.44 Notice this is no reason to feel death anymore 00:45:47.47\00:45:49.89 because this text says us-- 00:45:49.92\00:45:51.59 tell us that Jesus threw death overcame 00:45:51.62\00:45:55.55 he who has the power of death. 00:45:55.58\00:45:58.58 By the way it reminds me of that story of the serpent 00:45:58.61\00:46:01.11 that was raised up in the wilderness. 00:46:01.14\00:46:03.33 You know in the Bible usually the serpent represents 00:46:03.36\00:46:06.70 the power of Satan and sin. 00:46:06.73\00:46:10.64 And yet a serpent is used to illustrate Jesus. 00:46:10.67\00:46:13.42 Jesus says, as the serpent was raised 00:46:13.45\00:46:15.53 in the wilderness so must the son of man be raised up. 00:46:15.56\00:46:19.53 So that as the people looked upon the serpent. 00:46:19.56\00:46:22.11 They lived as people look upon Me, 00:46:22.14\00:46:24.16 Jesus says they shall live. 00:46:24.19\00:46:26.27 Why would a serpent be used to illustrate Jesus 00:46:26.30\00:46:29.78 when the serpent represents 00:46:29.81\00:46:31.34 the power of Satan and the power of sin? 00:46:31.37\00:46:33.34 The simple reason is that 00:46:33.37\00:46:34.76 Jesus the Bible tells us be came sin. 00:46:34.79\00:46:38.75 Jesus came and died so that by becoming sin 00:46:38.78\00:46:44.08 and by dying for sin, He could overcome death 00:46:44.11\00:46:47.92 and He could give us everlasting life. 00:46:47.95\00:46:51.92 Now let's go to Revelation 20:13-15 00:46:51.95\00:46:56.02 where we find the last two references 00:46:56.05\00:46:59.67 to the word Hades in the New Testament. 00:46:59.70\00:47:02.83 Revelation 20:13-15. 00:47:02.86\00:47:07.74 It says here "The sea gave up the dead who were in it" 00:47:07.77\00:47:11.33 those who were in the sea were what? 00:47:11.36\00:47:14.58 Dead, very well. 00:47:14.61\00:47:16.11 "And Death and Hades delivered up the dead 00:47:16.14\00:47:21.26 who were in them." 00:47:21.29\00:47:23.00 Who were the once in Hades? 00:47:23.03\00:47:26.63 The dead, not those who are living and writhing 00:47:26.66\00:47:29.57 in pain in the flames, in misery, in hell. 00:47:29.60\00:47:33.24 It's not what it says. 00:47:33.27\00:47:35.01 It says that "The sea gave up the dead who were in it, 00:47:35.04\00:47:37.49 and Death and Hades delivered up the dead 00:47:37.52\00:47:40.27 who were in them." 00:47:40.30\00:47:41.52 By the way how could you translate the word Hades there? 00:47:41.55\00:47:44.99 The grave, very simply. 00:47:45.02\00:47:47.75 And it says, "And they were judged, 00:47:47.78\00:47:50.83 each one according to his works." 00:47:50.86\00:47:53.76 Verse 14, "Then Death and Hades" 00:47:53.79\00:47:57.95 that is death and the grave were what? 00:47:57.98\00:48:00.35 "Were cast into the lake of fire." 00:48:00.38\00:48:03.16 See it says, sea, Hades does have to deal with fire. 00:48:03.19\00:48:07.56 Yeah, but Hades that's not the place where the fire burns. 00:48:07.59\00:48:10.28 The Bible says that Hades is thrown into the fire that burns. 00:48:10.31\00:48:14.80 Are you with me? 00:48:14.83\00:48:16.58 So, if you say that Hades is hell then you are saying 00:48:16.61\00:48:19.23 that hell was thrown into hell. 00:48:19.26\00:48:22.10 The fact is that Hades is what? 00:48:22.13\00:48:24.03 Hades is the grave. 00:48:24.06\00:48:26.04 So what it says in verse 14, 00:48:26.07\00:48:27.72 "Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire." 00:48:27.75\00:48:31.32 This is the what? "The second death." 00:48:31.35\00:48:34.44 That is final death from which there will be no resurrection. 00:48:34.47\00:48:37.40 "And anyone not found" written in the Book of Life 00:48:37.43\00:48:40.34 "was cast into the lake of fire." 00:48:40.37\00:48:42.80 By the way this is the reason why the Bible tells us 00:48:42.83\00:48:45.32 in 1 Corinthians 15:26 that the last enemy 00:48:45.35\00:48:50.73 that will be destroyed is what? 00:48:50.76\00:48:53.21 "The last enemy to be destroyed is death." 00:48:53.24\00:48:57.91 Because Jesus has overcome death. 00:48:57.94\00:49:00.58 Jesus has overcome the grave. 00:49:00.61\00:49:02.94 He went in and came out 00:49:02.97\00:49:05.05 with the keys according to Scripture. 00:49:05.08\00:49:07.54 And that's the reason why after death is destroyed 00:49:07.57\00:49:11.58 in the Lake of Fire, after the grave is destroyed 00:49:11.61\00:49:14.15 in the Lake of Fire then God is gonna make 00:49:14.18\00:49:17.17 a new heaven and new earth. 00:49:17.20\00:49:18.33 Let's read about it in Revelation 21:4, 00:49:18.36\00:49:21.71 Revelation 21:4 it says, 00:49:21.74\00:49:24.38 "And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes, 00:49:24.41\00:49:29.08 there shall be" no more what? 00:49:29.11\00:49:31.26 "No more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. 00:49:31.29\00:49:34.80 There shall be no more pain," 00:49:34.83\00:49:36.44 for the former things have what? 00:49:36.47\00:49:38.56 "For the former things have passed away." 00:49:38.59\00:49:43.54 By the way Jesus illustrated the glorious destiny 00:49:43.57\00:49:47.27 awaiting God's people when He went up 00:49:47.30\00:49:49.81 to the Mount of Transfiguration with three of His disciples. 00:49:49.84\00:49:54.44 You probably know the story Jesus went up there 00:49:54.47\00:49:57.94 and He was transfigured in the sight of the disciples. 00:49:57.97\00:50:01.71 That is, He was glorified like 00:50:01.74\00:50:03.68 He is gonna look at His second coming. 00:50:03.71\00:50:07.03 And the Bible tells us that there on the mount appeared 00:50:07.06\00:50:10.58 two individuals speaking with Jesus. 00:50:10.61\00:50:14.14 The Bible identifies them as Mosses and Elijah. 00:50:14.17\00:50:19.16 Now if you examine scripture carefully 00:50:19.19\00:50:21.49 you are gonna notice by comparing Deuteronomy 34:5, 6 00:50:21.52\00:50:26.34 with the Book of Jude, 00:50:26.37\00:50:28.43 Verse 9 that when Mosses died 00:50:28.46\00:50:31.66 Michael the archangel came to call Mosses out of the tomb. 00:50:31.69\00:50:36.03 In other words, Mosses died resurrected 00:50:36.06\00:50:39.28 and was taken to heaven. 00:50:39.31\00:50:43.23 And of course we all know about Elijah. 00:50:43.26\00:50:45.31 Elijah was translated to heaven in a chariot of fire 00:50:45.34\00:50:49.85 with out experiencing what? 00:50:49.88\00:50:51.78 With experiencing death. 00:50:51.81\00:50:53.87 Now Jesus had something 00:50:53.90\00:50:55.62 very interesting to the disciples. 00:50:55.65\00:50:57.49 He immediately before he was transfigured He says, 00:50:57.52\00:51:00.13 there are some of you here who will not taste death 00:51:00.16\00:51:03.83 until you see the son of man coming in his kingdom. 00:51:03.86\00:51:09.11 And even Albert Schweitzer that great philanthropist 00:51:09.14\00:51:12.78 they worked so many years in Africa, 00:51:12.81\00:51:14.64 well, some are confused he said, 00:51:14.67\00:51:15.89 you know, Jesus believed that He was going to establish 00:51:15.92\00:51:17.89 the kingdom and He told his disciples 00:51:17.92\00:51:20.17 that they were going to see His kingdom 00:51:20.20\00:51:21.70 before they died. 00:51:21.73\00:51:22.85 But Jesus was simply wrong. 00:51:22.88\00:51:25.51 He was deluded fanatic, is what he says. 00:51:25.54\00:51:28.50 Because he believed that He was gonna bring the kingdom 00:51:28.53\00:51:30.66 but He actually never brought the kingdom 00:51:30.69\00:51:33.95 His hopes never materialized. 00:51:33.98\00:51:36.49 There is another way of looking at that. 00:51:36.52\00:51:38.43 You see immediately after Jesus said 00:51:38.46\00:51:41.66 that some of those who are here will not die 00:51:41.69\00:51:44.63 speaking to all of the disciples, 00:51:44.66\00:51:46.06 some of those, were the three 00:51:46.09\00:51:47.42 by the way that went up to the mount, 00:51:47.45\00:51:48.83 some of those who are here will not die 00:51:48.86\00:51:52.37 until you have seen the son of man coming in his kingdom. 00:51:52.40\00:51:55.28 Those three went up to the top of the mountain 00:51:55.31\00:51:58.05 which where Peter, James and John 00:51:58.08\00:52:00.81 and they saw Jesus transfigured 00:52:00.84\00:52:02.70 as He would look at His second coming. 00:52:02.73\00:52:05.38 And by the way on that Mount was represented 00:52:05.41\00:52:08.37 in miniature Christ total kingdom. 00:52:08.40\00:52:12.47 First of all you have Jesus in the centre 00:52:12.50\00:52:14.80 the one who went into the tomb, 00:52:14.83\00:52:17.03 grabbed the keys from the devil and came out and said 00:52:17.06\00:52:20.35 because I live you will live also. 00:52:20.38\00:52:22.95 But also there was Mosses representing those 00:52:22.98\00:52:27.02 who die in Christ and will be resurrected. 00:52:27.05\00:52:30.92 And you had also Elijah who was translated to heaven 00:52:30.95\00:52:34.88 from among the living. 00:52:34.91\00:52:36.42 The Apostle Paul described this 00:52:36.45\00:52:38.32 in 1 Thessalonians Chapter 4 where he said, 00:52:38.35\00:52:40.90 "That the Lord Himself will descend 00:52:40.93\00:52:42.61 from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel 00:52:42.64\00:52:45.77 and with the trumpet of God, 00:52:45.80\00:52:47.29 and the dead in Christ will rise first." 00:52:47.32\00:52:49.40 And then it speaks about the dead and the living 00:52:49.43\00:52:51.87 being caught up together 00:52:51.90\00:52:53.84 in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air 00:52:53.87\00:52:56.79 and thus we shall ever be with the Lord. 00:52:56.82\00:53:00.30 In other words on the Mount of Transfiguration 00:53:00.33\00:53:03.05 you have a mini kingdom. 00:53:03.08\00:53:06.19 You have a representation of what it's gonna be like 00:53:06.22\00:53:09.30 when Jesus comes in power and glory to rescue 00:53:09.33\00:53:13.06 His living saints and to rescue those 00:53:13.09\00:53:15.91 who have died in Jesus Christ. 00:53:15.94\00:53:18.78 So we have studied two very important words 00:53:18.81\00:53:21.25 that we find in the Old and New Testament. 00:53:21.28\00:53:24.16 We found the word Sheol in the Old Testament 00:53:24.19\00:53:27.32 and we analyzed the word Hades in the New Testament. 00:53:27.35\00:53:31.08 You tell me in the light of what we have studied 00:53:31.11\00:53:33.76 should the word Sheol be translated grave? 00:53:33.79\00:53:37.62 Absolutely. 00:53:37.65\00:53:39.05 Should the word Hades be translated grave as well 00:53:39.08\00:53:43.14 with the exception of the story 00:53:43.17\00:53:44.67 of the Rich Man and Lazarus where Jesus is using 00:53:44.70\00:53:47.30 their believes according to what we studies 00:53:47.33\00:53:50.40 to transmit a great truth. 00:53:50.43\00:53:52.68 In the other 10 references should the word 00:53:52.71\00:53:55.25 Hades be translated, grave? 00:53:55.28\00:53:57.81 Absolutely. 00:53:57.84\00:53:59.27 So what I am saying is that we are not to fear the grave. 00:53:59.30\00:54:06.33 We are not to fear a moment of silence. 00:54:06.36\00:54:09.47 We are not to fear a place of absolute pitch darkness 00:54:09.50\00:54:14.53 because Jesus has taken the sting out of deaths. 00:54:14.56\00:54:20.33 The Bible uses sleep as a symbol of death. 00:54:20.36\00:54:23.22 How many of you are afraid of going to sleep tonight? 00:54:23.25\00:54:27.18 Oh, it's terrifying. 00:54:27.21\00:54:29.15 I have to go to sleep tonight, of course not. 00:54:29.18\00:54:33.11 Well, death shouldn't scare you any more than sleep. 00:54:33.14\00:54:35.84 It's just that you sleep a little bit longer that's all. 00:54:35.87\00:54:39.25 But as there is awakening from sleep, 00:54:39.28\00:54:41.73 there will be an awakening from death. 00:54:41.76\00:54:44.35 The Apostle Paul says that death now is like 00:54:44.38\00:54:48.05 a wasp with out a stinger. 00:54:48.08\00:54:50.58 Let me ask you how much damage can a wasp do 00:54:50.61\00:54:54.28 with out a stinger? 00:54:54.31\00:54:55.51 He can do you absolutely no damage whatsoever. 00:54:55.54\00:54:58.52 The Bible says that death is like a shadow. 00:54:58.55\00:55:01.39 "Yea, though I walk through 00:55:01.42\00:55:03.92 the valley of the shadow of death, 00:55:03.95\00:55:05.39 I shall fear no evil." 00:55:05.42\00:55:08.13 The question is, how afraid are you of a shadow? 00:55:08.16\00:55:11.70 A shadow can do you a lot of damage, right. 00:55:11.73\00:55:14.50 If somebody moves his arm and the shadow crosses you, 00:55:14.53\00:55:17.83 uh that's going to hurt you bad. 00:55:17.86\00:55:19.07 Of course not. 00:55:19.10\00:55:21.35 You see death is a conquered form 00:55:21.38\00:55:24.23 because Jesus has concord the devil, 00:55:24.26\00:55:26.66 the grateful who is the prince of death 00:55:26.69\00:55:30.34 according to Scripture. 00:55:30.37\00:55:32.31 Now, I'd like to end by reading one verse Romans 8:11. 00:55:32.34\00:55:37.15 And here is the critical point, 00:55:37.18\00:55:40.50 the most important point of everything 00:55:40.53\00:55:42.60 that we have taken a look at in the last hour. 00:55:42.63\00:55:45.71 Romans 8:11, "But if the Spirit of him 00:55:45.74\00:55:52.70 who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, 00:55:52.73\00:55:58.35 he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life 00:55:58.38\00:56:03.43 to your mortal bodies through His spirit 00:56:03.46\00:56:07.24 who dwells in you." 00:56:07.27\00:56:09.58 In other words if we have the spirit of Jesus 00:56:09.61\00:56:12.26 in our lives that same spirit who resurrected 00:56:12.29\00:56:16.22 Jesus will resurrect us if we should die. 00:56:16.25\00:56:21.31 That is the glorious hope folks of Christians. 00:56:21.34\00:56:26.00 The hope of Christians is not that, 00:56:26.03\00:56:28.55 you know when you die you go to heaven 00:56:28.58\00:56:31.63 to be happy with the Lord. 00:56:31.66\00:56:33.66 You know, if that was the hope 00:56:33.69\00:56:35.50 then when you have a funeral people shouldn't be crying, 00:56:35.53\00:56:38.75 they should be shouting Hallelujah, 00:56:38.78\00:56:40.06 praise the Lord. 00:56:40.09\00:56:41.12 They should be having a party 00:56:41.15\00:56:43.24 because all my relatives is enjoying that banquet 00:56:43.27\00:56:46.86 with Jesus in heaven. 00:56:46.89\00:56:49.05 But you see people, no that that's not the case 00:56:49.08\00:56:52.12 and so they have this long sad face 00:56:52.15\00:56:55.27 and they are crying. 00:56:55.30\00:56:56.57 You know, if our relative went to heaven 00:56:56.60\00:56:58.88 we should be overjoyed and happy at it. 00:56:58.91\00:57:01.44 But the fact is that the hope of the Christian 00:57:01.47\00:57:03.66 is not found in the immortality of the soul. 00:57:03.69\00:57:06.88 The hope of the Christian is found 00:57:06.91\00:57:09.05 in the resurrection of the dead. 00:57:09.08\00:57:11.46 And if Jesus is our Savior and our Lord folks, 00:57:11.49\00:57:15.08 we can be absolutely certain that even 00:57:15.11\00:57:17.18 if we should die this night, that when Jesus comes 00:57:17.21\00:57:20.91 on the clouds of heaven He will call and we will answer. 00:57:20.94\00:57:24.93 I hope that this is our glorious hope today. 00:57:24.96\00:57:28.56
