If a man dies, shall he live again? 00:00:01.68\00:00:07.11 What does it mean to be absent from the body 00:00:07.14\00:00:10.03 and present with the Lord? 00:00:10.06\00:00:13.58 Did Jesus go with a thief to paradise on Good Friday? 00:00:13.61\00:00:19.66 Did the souls of dead people 00:00:19.69\00:00:21.51 really cry out from below the alter? 00:00:21.54\00:00:25.67 Pastor Bohr answers these questions 00:00:25.70\00:00:27.57 and more in the amazing series. 00:00:27.60\00:00:30.04 So we bow our heads for prayer. 00:00:34.93\00:00:38.57 Father in Heaven, what a joy it is to be in Your presence. 00:00:38.60\00:00:42.67 We thank you Father, for giving us your Holy word 00:00:42.70\00:00:47.26 which is assured guide in a world 00:00:47.29\00:00:50.46 that is totally confused about so many things. 00:00:50.49\00:00:54.59 And Father, as we study today, 00:00:54.62\00:00:57.29 about that passage in 1 Peter 3 00:00:57.32\00:01:01.84 about the preaching of Jesus to the spirits in prison 00:01:01.87\00:01:06.39 we ask for divine wisdom. 00:01:06.42\00:01:10.01 I ask Lord, that You will take away 00:01:10.04\00:01:11.85 from our minds and from our hearts 00:01:11.88\00:01:14.54 any preconceived notions that we might have 00:01:14.57\00:01:18.17 and that we might be willing to listen to Your voice. 00:01:18.20\00:01:23.04 We thank you father, for hearing our prayer 00:01:23.07\00:01:25.97 for we ask it in the precious 00:01:26.00\00:01:27.67 and powerful name of Jesus. Amen. 00:01:27.70\00:01:32.46 As I mention in my prayer we are going to study today, 00:01:32.49\00:01:35.06 that famous passage about 00:01:35.09\00:01:37.05 preaching to the spirits in prison. 00:01:37.08\00:01:41.04 1 Peter 3:18-22. 00:01:41.07\00:01:47.43 What I am gonna do first of all is read this passage 00:01:47.46\00:01:51.95 and then we are going to take a closer look 00:01:51.98\00:01:55.60 at several of the details that we find in this passage. 00:01:55.63\00:02:01.44 1 Peter Chapter 3 and beginning with verse 18. 00:02:01.47\00:02:07.80 "For Christ also suffered once for sins, 00:02:07.83\00:02:13.86 the just for the unjust, 00:02:13.89\00:02:17.05 that He might bring us to God, 00:02:17.08\00:02:20.37 being put to death in the flesh 00:02:20.40\00:02:24.08 but made alive by the Spirit by whom also He went 00:02:24.11\00:02:31.32 and preached to the spirits in prison, 00:02:31.35\00:02:35.04 who formerly were disobedient 00:02:35.07\00:02:36.98 when once the Divine 00:02:37.01\00:02:38.73 longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, 00:02:38.76\00:02:41.57 while the ark was being prepared, 00:02:41.60\00:02:44.03 in which a few, that is, eight souls, 00:02:44.06\00:02:47.67 were saved through water. 00:02:47.70\00:02:50.80 There is also an antitype which now saves us-baptism 00:02:50.83\00:02:57.82 (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, 00:02:57.85\00:03:01.27 but the answer of a good conscience toward God), 00:03:01.30\00:03:05.17 through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 00:03:05.20\00:03:09.50 who has gone into heaven 00:03:09.53\00:03:12.00 and is at the right hand of God, 00:03:12.03\00:03:15.10 angels and authorities 00:03:15.13\00:03:17.72 and powers having been made subject to Him." 00:03:17.75\00:03:24.59 This is the famous passage 00:03:24.62\00:03:27.47 of the preaching to the spirits in prison. 00:03:27.50\00:03:31.53 Now allow me to tell you a few introductory things 00:03:31.56\00:03:34.55 about the two epistles that Peter wrote. 00:03:34.58\00:03:40.35 First of all I want us to notice 00:03:40.38\00:03:42.58 that these epistles were not written for theologians. 00:03:42.61\00:03:47.89 They were not written for philosophers. 00:03:47.92\00:03:51.54 They were written by common for common ordinary Christians. 00:03:51.57\00:03:58.00 In other words they have a practice purpose. 00:03:58.03\00:04:01.31 They can be understood by the lay person in the pew. 00:04:01.34\00:04:05.46 And Peter wrote these things 00:04:05.49\00:04:08.41 to bring encouragement in the midst of trails 00:04:08.44\00:04:13.68 and tribulations and sufferings. 00:04:13.71\00:04:17.55 So this passage even though it is complex 00:04:17.58\00:04:22.17 it cannot only be understood by theologians 00:04:22.20\00:04:24.79 it can be understood and applied to the life 00:04:24.82\00:04:27.90 by the common ordinary church member. 00:04:27.93\00:04:32.42 I want you to notice in 1 Peter Chapter 1 00:04:32.45\00:04:35.60 who this epistles is directed to. 00:04:35.63\00:04:38.90 1 Peter 1:1, 2. 00:04:38.93\00:04:43.20 "Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, 00:04:43.23\00:04:47.57 to the pilgrims of the Dispersion in Pontus, 00:04:47.60\00:04:54.43 Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 00:04:54.46\00:05:02.23 elect according to the foreknowledge 00:05:02.26\00:05:04.08 of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, 00:05:04.11\00:05:07.46 for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ, 00:05:07.49\00:05:11.86 Grace to you and peace be multiplied to you." 00:05:11.89\00:05:15.62 So notice he is writing to the Jews 00:05:15.65\00:05:19.26 primarily who are in the Diaspora, 00:05:19.29\00:05:22.23 in other words in the dispersion. 00:05:22.26\00:05:24.72 He is writing to common ordinary Christians. 00:05:24.75\00:05:30.72 Now there is a common mis- understanding of this passage. 00:05:30.75\00:05:35.16 I want to read now the way many Christians 00:05:35.19\00:05:38.86 read this passage or read things into this passage. 00:05:38.89\00:05:44.09 This is the way they read it. 00:05:44.12\00:05:46.81 While the body of Jesus was dead 00:05:46.84\00:05:50.98 his soul went down to hell 00:05:51.01\00:05:56.21 and He preached the good news of salvation 00:05:56.24\00:05:59.11 to the spirits of dead people 00:05:59.14\00:06:01.99 who disobeyed at the time of the flood 00:06:02.02\00:06:04.81 in order to give them a second chance to be saved. 00:06:04.84\00:06:11.38 That's the way that many Christians read this passage. 00:06:11.41\00:06:16.47 But they are actually reading into the passage 00:06:16.50\00:06:19.39 what is not there. 00:06:19.42\00:06:22.13 No where do you find here any reference to the word soul. 00:06:22.16\00:06:28.30 You find no reference to Jesus going down. 00:06:28.33\00:06:32.05 You find no reference to Jesus preaching the gospel. 00:06:32.08\00:06:35.90 You find no reference that the spirits 00:06:35.93\00:06:37.81 are spirits of dead people. 00:06:37.84\00:06:40.12 And you find no reference of a second change. 00:06:40.15\00:06:45.61 Now I want to give you several reasons 00:06:45.64\00:06:47.93 why Jesus could not have preached 00:06:47.96\00:06:52.66 to the disincarnated spirits of the dead. 00:06:52.69\00:06:57.54 Number one, the Bible teaches 00:06:57.57\00:07:00.53 that there will not be another chance 00:07:00.56\00:07:03.14 to be saved after you die, a second chance. 00:07:03.17\00:07:06.66 Notice Hebrews 9:27 00:07:06.69\00:07:09.63 where this is made absolutely crystal clear, 00:07:09.66\00:07:12.67 Hebrews 9: 27. 00:07:12.70\00:07:16.78 It says there, 00:07:16.81\00:07:18.47 "And as it is appointed for men to die" what? 00:07:18.50\00:07:25.97 "once, but after this the judgment." 00:07:26.00\00:07:31.38 What comes after a person dies? 00:07:31.41\00:07:35.02 The judgment according to scripture. 00:07:35.05\00:07:37.64 No idea that you can die 00:07:37.67\00:07:39.81 and then have the gospel preached to you 00:07:39.84\00:07:41.82 and you can be saved 00:07:41.85\00:07:43.27 and then after that you are judged. 00:07:43.30\00:07:45.52 The fact is you live once 00:07:45.55\00:07:47.47 and after you live you have the judgment. 00:07:47.50\00:07:51.25 The Bible tells us in the book of Hebrews 00:07:51.28\00:07:53.65 that today is the day of salvation 00:07:53.68\00:07:56.75 not tomorrow, not two or three thousand years 00:07:56.78\00:08:01.38 down the road after you are dead. 00:08:01.41\00:08:03.24 The Bible says if you hear His voice today 00:08:03.27\00:08:07.38 do not harden your heart. 00:08:07.41\00:08:09.01 In other words while we are alive 00:08:09.04\00:08:11.24 is when we can make decisions for salvations. 00:08:11.27\00:08:16.17 Further more, we are told 00:08:16.20\00:08:18.44 in the Book of Ecclesiastes 9:5 the following. 00:08:18.47\00:08:24.73 "For the living know that they shall die, 00:08:24.76\00:08:28.15 but the dead know not anything 00:08:28.18\00:08:32.31 neither have they any more a reward, 00:08:32.34\00:08:34.83 for the memory of them is forgotten." 00:08:34.86\00:08:37.56 So if the dead don't know any thing, 00:08:37.59\00:08:39.84 how is that the Jesus supposedly went to preach 00:08:39.87\00:08:43.31 to the spirits in prison? 00:08:43.34\00:08:45.80 If it is appointed for an individual to die 00:08:45.83\00:08:48.28 and after that the judgment 00:08:48.31\00:08:50.06 how could they have been preached to after the judgment? 00:08:50.09\00:08:56.10 If the Bible says if you hear His voice today, 00:08:56.13\00:08:59.03 do not harden your heart. 00:08:59.06\00:09:00.65 If the Bible says, today is the day of salvation 00:09:00.68\00:09:03.51 how is it that they could be saved 00:09:03.54\00:09:05.57 supposedly after they died? 00:09:05.60\00:09:09.23 Further more the Bible is very clear that 00:09:09.26\00:09:12.59 that generation of people 00:09:12.62\00:09:15.21 who live before the flood were irreversible. 00:09:15.24\00:09:21.64 Now if they couldn't be reached with the gospel 00:09:21.67\00:09:23.86 while they were alive 00:09:23.89\00:09:26.25 why suddenly would they listen 00:09:26.28\00:09:27.94 to the preaching after they were dead? 00:09:27.97\00:09:31.03 Notice Genesis 6:5, 00:09:31.06\00:09:34.25 Genesis 6:5 speaking about that pre-flood race. 00:09:34.28\00:09:40.10 It says there, "Then the Lord saw 00:09:40.13\00:09:44.09 that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, 00:09:44.12\00:09:49.84 and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart 00:09:49.87\00:09:54.14 was only evil continually." 00:09:54.17\00:09:58.94 Basically this is speaking about a race 00:09:58.97\00:10:01.30 that had become totally degenerate 00:10:01.33\00:10:04.51 and the Book of Genesis makes it clear 00:10:04.54\00:10:06.20 that when the door of the ark closed 00:10:06.23\00:10:08.83 that was it for those who lived 00:10:08.86\00:10:12.57 in this period before the flood. 00:10:12.60\00:10:15.00 So the idea that somehow later on 00:10:15.03\00:10:17.82 Jesus goes and preaches to these spirits of dead people 00:10:17.85\00:10:23.77 many thousands of years later 00:10:23.80\00:10:26.41 doesn't square at all 00:10:26.44\00:10:28.48 with the condition that they were in before the flood 00:10:28.51\00:10:31.37 which means that they had committed the unpardonable sin. 00:10:31.40\00:10:34.22 They were irreversible. 00:10:34.25\00:10:35.90 So how could they be reached? 00:10:35.93\00:10:37.59 How could they respond to the gospel 00:10:37.62\00:10:41.03 after they were dead? 00:10:41.06\00:10:42.26 It's simply not possible. 00:10:42.29\00:10:45.00 Now I would like us to go specifically to the passage 00:10:45.03\00:10:49.25 1 Peter 3:18 00:10:49.28\00:10:51.86 and the first thing that I want us to notice 00:10:51.89\00:10:53.88 is the structure of verse 18, 00:10:53.91\00:10:57.02 how it is organized 00:10:57.05\00:10:58.37 the literary structure of verse 18. 00:10:58.40\00:11:02.19 We have actually here a synonymous parallelism. 00:11:02.22\00:11:05.98 The first half of the verse 00:11:06.01\00:11:07.81 is explained in the second half of the verse. 00:11:07.84\00:11:11.45 It says, "For Christ also suffered once for sins, 00:11:11.48\00:11:18.06 the just for the unjust, that He might" 00:11:18.09\00:11:21.36 what "bring us to God." 00:11:21.39\00:11:24.53 Let me ask you would he have to be alive to bring us to God? 00:11:24.56\00:11:28.05 Of course he would 00:11:28.08\00:11:29.18 so what this is saying is that Jesus suffered 00:11:29.21\00:11:31.76 and died for our sins so that he could resurrect 00:11:31.79\00:11:34.90 and he could, what, bring us to God. 00:11:34.93\00:11:37.81 That is explained 00:11:37.84\00:11:39.07 in the second half of the verse, explicitly. 00:11:39.10\00:11:42.13 It says, being put to death in the flesh 00:11:42.16\00:11:45.70 is that parallel to suffered once for our sins? Yes. 00:11:45.73\00:11:49.26 Being put to death in the flesh 00:11:49.29\00:11:52.53 but made alive by the spirit 00:11:52.56\00:11:55.36 is that the same as that he might bring us to God? 00:11:55.39\00:12:00.09 Absolutely. 00:12:00.12\00:12:01.40 So you have a parallel in this verse. 00:12:01.43\00:12:05.50 Christ suffered for sins, 00:12:05.53\00:12:07.23 which is the same as being put to death in the flesh 00:12:07.26\00:12:10.62 that he might bring us to God 00:12:10.65\00:12:12.48 is the same as made alive by the spirit. 00:12:12.51\00:12:18.09 Now we need to understand 00:12:18.12\00:12:19.46 what is meant here 00:12:19.49\00:12:21.17 by being put to death in the flesh. 00:12:21.20\00:12:28.27 What does that mean being put to death in the flesh? 00:12:28.30\00:12:30.89 What does the word flesh there mean? 00:12:30.92\00:12:34.55 It's speaking about the tent 00:12:34.58\00:12:38.21 that we spoke about in our last lecture. 00:12:38.24\00:12:41.46 It's speaking about this body which was subject to mortality. 00:12:41.49\00:12:47.71 It was subject to death. 00:12:47.74\00:12:50.44 Notice Hebrews 5:7 where this is explicitly said. 00:12:50.47\00:12:55.50 Hebrews 5:7. 00:12:55.53\00:13:00.39 It says here speaking about Jesus 00:13:00.42\00:13:03.04 "Who, in the days of His flesh," 00:13:03.07\00:13:10.36 is that mean while He was on this earth 00:13:10.39\00:13:12.98 before his death and resurrection? Absolutely. 00:13:13.01\00:13:16.87 "Who, in the days of His flesh, 00:13:16.90\00:13:18.68 when He had offered up prayers and supplications, 00:13:18.71\00:13:21.67 with vehement cries and tears to Him 00:13:21.70\00:13:25.53 who was able to save him from death, 00:13:25.56\00:13:28.25 and was heard because of his godly fear. 00:13:28.28\00:13:33.26 So we find that put the death in the flesh means 00:13:33.29\00:13:36.57 that His human nature which was subject to weakness 00:13:36.60\00:13:42.06 and it was subject to death when He was crucified died. 00:13:42.09\00:13:48.10 His tent if you please, 00:13:48.13\00:13:50.37 the body which was mortal and subject to weakness. 00:13:50.40\00:13:56.35 But what does it mean 00:13:56.38\00:13:58.04 that he was made alive by the spirit, 00:13:58.07\00:14:03.73 I prefer the translation 00:14:03.76\00:14:05.04 I'll tell you the reason why in a few moments. 00:14:05.07\00:14:07.01 The translation in the King James Version 00:14:07.04\00:14:09.25 where it says, "Made alive in the spirit." 00:14:09.28\00:14:13.07 Now what does that mean, "Made alive in the spirit." 00:14:13.10\00:14:15.86 Put the death in the flesh means 00:14:15.89\00:14:17.48 that he was tent or his body mortal body, 00:14:17.51\00:14:23.66 weak body died and went to the grave. 00:14:23.69\00:14:27.59 But what does it mean 00:14:27.62\00:14:28.95 when it says made alive in the spirit? 00:14:28.98\00:14:32.70 Well, go with me to Romans 8:11, 00:14:32.73\00:14:37.33 Romans 8:11. 00:14:37.36\00:14:42.19 "But if the Spirit of Him 00:14:42.22\00:14:45.76 who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you," 00:14:45.79\00:14:50.29 Who raised Jesus from the dead? 00:14:50.32\00:14:52.77 The sprit according to this. 00:14:52.80\00:14:54.39 "Who raised Jesus form the dead dwells in you, 00:14:54.42\00:14:58.92 He who raised Christ from the dead 00:14:58.95\00:15:02.26 will also give life to your" what? 00:15:02.29\00:15:06.55 "Mortal bodies through His spirit who dwells in you." 00:15:06.58\00:15:11.19 So what does that mean being made alive in the spirit? 00:15:11.22\00:15:15.67 It's speaking about the what? 00:15:15.70\00:15:18.42 The resurrection of Jesus through the power of whom? 00:15:18.45\00:15:23.94 Of the Holy Spirit. 00:15:23.97\00:15:25.37 So are these the two same states of existence 00:15:25.40\00:15:29.09 that are experienced by the tent 00:15:29.12\00:15:30.96 and the building that we studied last night. 00:15:30.99\00:15:33.66 Absolutely. 00:15:33.69\00:15:35.40 In other words, He died 00:15:35.43\00:15:37.80 and He resurrected is what its saying. 00:15:37.83\00:15:42.26 Notice also 1 Corinthians 15:42-44 00:15:42.29\00:15:46.44 on this very important aspect. 00:15:46.47\00:15:48.86 What it means to be put to death in the flesh 00:15:48.89\00:15:51.06 and resurrect in the spirit 00:15:51.09\00:15:52.97 of being made alive in the spirit. 00:15:53.00\00:15:56.04 It says in 1 Corinthians 15:42, 00:15:56.07\00:15:59.70 "So also is the resurrection of the dead. 00:15:59.73\00:16:03.88 The body is sown in corruption," 00:16:03.91\00:16:07.64 Is that the tent? Yes. 00:16:07.67\00:16:11.42 Is that being put to death in the flesh? Absolutely. 00:16:11.45\00:16:14.68 "The body is sown in corruption, it is raised" How? 00:16:14.71\00:16:21.09 "In incorruption." 00:16:21.12\00:16:22.51 Is that the building that we receive from God 00:16:22.54\00:16:24.74 at the moment of resurrection? Absolutely. 00:16:24.77\00:16:27.54 "It is sown in dishonor, it is raised" How? 00:16:27.57\00:16:33.16 "In glory. 00:16:33.19\00:16:34.63 It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. 00:16:34.66\00:16:41.22 It is sown a natural body, 00:16:41.25\00:16:45.07 it is raised a spiritual body." 00:16:45.10\00:16:49.53 You understanding what it means to be resurrected 00:16:49.56\00:16:51.42 in the spirit or getting life in the spirit. 00:16:51.45\00:16:54.42 It means that the Holy Spirit resurrects the person 00:16:54.45\00:16:56.92 and gives that person the building 00:16:56.95\00:17:00.01 that God has prepared in heaven. 00:17:00.04\00:17:03.33 And so the apostle Paul says, 00:17:03.36\00:17:05.05 there is a natural body and there is a spiritual body. 00:17:05.08\00:17:10.10 So are you understanding, 1 Peter 3:18? 00:17:10.13\00:17:16.39 It's simply saying that Jesus suffered once for our sins 00:17:16.42\00:17:20.65 which is a same thing as saying 00:17:20.68\00:17:22.41 that He is put to death in the flesh. 00:17:22.44\00:17:25.63 But then it says that he might bring us to God 00:17:25.66\00:17:29.32 and the way that He could do this 00:17:29.35\00:17:31.09 is He was made alive how? 00:17:31.12\00:17:33.94 In the spirit. 00:17:33.97\00:17:36.10 Now we need to look a little bit at the grammar 00:17:36.13\00:17:39.63 of chapter 3:19. 00:17:39.66\00:17:43.48 And you know, I debate 00:17:43.51\00:17:44.55 on whether to touch the issue of grammar 00:17:44.58\00:17:47.17 but in this particular case it is extremely important 00:17:47.20\00:17:50.67 for us to understand the grammar 00:17:50.70\00:17:53.39 in Greek of 1 Peter 3:19. 00:17:53.42\00:17:59.20 Now let me ask you must there be an agreement 00:17:59.23\00:18:03.63 between the noun and the pronoun. 00:18:03.66\00:18:08.38 Those of you who know about English 00:18:08.41\00:18:10.49 know that the pronoun and the noun have to agree. 00:18:10.52\00:18:15.82 Now the problem in English is that our pronouns 00:18:15.85\00:18:19.58 basically have one form, right? 00:18:19.61\00:18:26.67 And they are distinguished by gender. 00:18:26.70\00:18:30.92 But in Greek you have what are called cases. 00:18:30.95\00:18:36.49 A noun can be in nominative case, 00:18:36.52\00:18:39.86 it can be in the accusative case, 00:18:39.89\00:18:43.07 it can be in the genitive case 00:18:43.10\00:18:47.39 or it can be in the accusative case. 00:18:47.42\00:18:51.78 And each case has a different ending 00:18:51.81\00:18:54.78 for that Greek word, 00:18:54.81\00:18:57.04 which means that the pronoun 00:18:57.07\00:19:01.29 and the noun have to have the same ending in that case. 00:19:01.32\00:19:07.43 Are you understanding a little bit 00:19:07.46\00:19:08.67 of what I am saying? Yes. 00:19:08.70\00:19:11.15 Now the reason I am saying this 00:19:11.18\00:19:12.86 is because the expression in the flesh- 00:19:12.89\00:19:17.90 this is very important, 00:19:17.93\00:19:19.43 the expression in the flesh is in the dative case. 00:19:19.46\00:19:27.01 When I see Jonathan saying, yeah, remember my Greek 00:19:27.04\00:19:31.38 because he is just come back from college. 00:19:31.41\00:19:35.26 In the flesh is in the dative case. 00:19:35.29\00:19:37.95 The ending actually in Greek it is en sarki. 00:19:37.98\00:19:44.31 Not sarkus, en sarki. 00:19:44.34\00:19:48.74 The expression in the spirit is also in the dative case. 00:19:48.77\00:19:55.01 In pneumate, see it ends in E. 00:19:55.04\00:20:00.88 The interesting thing is that the expression that is used 00:20:00.91\00:20:08.01 in which verse 19 says, 00:20:08.04\00:20:14.49 "By whom also He went and preached 00:20:14.52\00:20:16.83 to the spirits in prison." 00:20:16.86\00:20:18.26 You'll notice that in the King James it doesn't say, 00:20:18.29\00:20:20.11 by whom also He went 00:20:20.14\00:20:21.95 and preached to the spirits in prison. 00:20:21.98\00:20:23.46 It actually says, in which He went 00:20:23.49\00:20:26.58 and preached to the spirits in prison. 00:20:26.61\00:20:30.00 In the king James, that a better translation 00:20:30.03\00:20:34.06 because that expression "in which" 00:20:34.09\00:20:36.71 which is a relative pronoun is also in the dative case. 00:20:36.74\00:20:42.24 So you have the noun, flesh, 00:20:42.27\00:20:47.27 you have the noun, spirit, 00:20:47.30\00:20:50.58 and you have the relative pronoun 00:20:50.61\00:20:53.00 in which all agreeing in the same case. 00:20:53.03\00:20:56.81 What does that mean? 00:20:56.84\00:20:58.27 In practical terms it means that when verse 19 says, 00:20:58.30\00:21:03.59 in which, or in which state 00:21:03.62\00:21:07.09 He went and preached to the spirits in prison 00:21:07.12\00:21:10.13 you have to look at the nouns 00:21:10.16\00:21:12.20 that come before the expression, in which. 00:21:12.23\00:21:17.26 In which, what? 00:21:17.29\00:21:19.29 Well, He was put to death in the flesh, dative case. 00:21:19.32\00:21:24.64 He was made alive in the spirit, dative case. 00:21:24.67\00:21:31.13 In which dative case, 00:21:31.16\00:21:33.84 He went and preached to the spirits in prison. 00:21:33.87\00:21:36.62 Let me ask you, when it says then in which He went. 00:21:36.65\00:21:40.06 He went how? After He what? 00:21:40.09\00:21:43.03 After He died and He resurrected. 00:21:43.06\00:21:49.54 Are you following me? 00:21:49.57\00:21:51.28 Now if you don't know English grammar you are in trouble. 00:21:51.31\00:21:55.20 The best way to learn another language 00:21:55.23\00:21:56.94 is by knowing the grammar of your own language. 00:21:56.97\00:22:00.17 It's much easier to learn a language that way, 00:22:00.20\00:22:03.68 but once again I underline that the word flesh, 00:22:03.71\00:22:06.99 the word spirit and the expression 00:22:07.02\00:22:09.28 in which are all in the same case. 00:22:09.31\00:22:11.98 They are all in the dative case 00:22:12.01\00:22:13.68 which means that the expression in which, 00:22:13.71\00:22:16.46 which is translated in the New king James by which 00:22:16.49\00:22:19.50 refers back to dying in the flesh 00:22:19.53\00:22:24.49 and being resurrected in the spirit. 00:22:24.52\00:22:27.46 So how did Jesus go to preach to the spirits in prison? 00:22:27.49\00:22:32.34 He went after He died and what? 00:22:32.37\00:22:35.58 And resurrected. 00:22:35.61\00:22:37.94 Which means that He didn't go there 00:22:37.97\00:22:40.20 when He died at all. 00:22:40.23\00:22:43.77 Are you with me? 00:22:43.80\00:22:45.59 Now, let's take a look at 00:22:45.62\00:22:48.48 some of the words in this verse. 00:22:48.51\00:22:52.33 In which state, in which resurrected state, 00:22:52.36\00:22:59.33 He went... went... 00:22:59.36\00:23:04.94 that's the Greek word Poduthese. 00:23:04.97\00:23:11.06 It is used for going 00:23:11.09\00:23:15.08 up, down or horizontally. 00:23:15.11\00:23:20.30 For example it's used 00:23:21.62\00:23:23.36 to say that the apostle Paul went to the Damascus. 00:23:23.39\00:23:29.75 So that's horizontal going. 00:23:29.78\00:23:33.56 It's also used to speak about going down, 00:23:33.59\00:23:38.75 but it's also used to speak about going up. 00:23:38.78\00:23:44.12 The problem is that here it simply says He went. 00:23:44.15\00:23:48.89 And so most Christians assume 00:23:48.92\00:23:50.89 He went down to hell to preach to the spirits. 00:23:50.92\00:23:55.18 They are putting in the text what is not in the text. 00:23:55.21\00:23:59.21 The question is where did Jesus go? 00:23:59.24\00:24:02.64 Did He necessarily go down? No. 00:24:02.67\00:24:05.61 He could have gone, what? Up. 00:24:05.64\00:24:08.80 In fact let's notice a verse in Acts 1:10 00:24:08.83\00:24:12.80 that speaks about the ascension of Jesus 00:24:12.83\00:24:15.00 and the word go or the use the word went 00:24:15.03\00:24:18.48 is referring not to going down but to his ascension to heaven. 00:24:18.51\00:24:22.50 Notice Acts 1:10, 00:24:22.53\00:24:26.00 "And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven 00:24:26.03\00:24:30.53 as He" what... "went" that's the same word Poduthese. 00:24:30.56\00:24:35.57 "Went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel." 00:24:35.60\00:24:42.45 So the word went can refer to Jesus going up, 00:24:45.30\00:24:48.71 not necessarily going down. 00:24:48.74\00:24:51.90 In fact the context indicates that that's the way 00:24:51.93\00:24:55.34 that the word went should be translated. 00:24:55.37\00:24:57.71 You say how is that? 00:24:57.74\00:24:59.30 Go with me to verses 21 and 22 of 1 Peter 3. 00:24:59.33\00:25:05.20 It says, "Through 00:25:05.23\00:25:06.43 the resurrection of Jesus Christ," 00:25:06.46\00:25:09.63 this is the last part of verse 21 00:25:09.66\00:25:11.40 "Through the resurrection of Jesus Christ," 00:25:11.43\00:25:13.38 talking about the resurrection, right, 00:25:13.41\00:25:16.03 "who has gone," 00:25:16.06\00:25:19.88 I bet you cant guess what word that is " Poduthese. 00:25:19.91\00:25:24.68 The very word in the same context. 00:25:24.71\00:25:27.96 "It says who has gone" down to hell, no. 00:25:27.99\00:25:35.32 Who has gone where" 00:25:35.35\00:25:37.41 "Into heaven and is at the right hand of God, 00:25:37.44\00:25:42.47 angels and authorities and powers 00:25:42.50\00:25:45.81 having been made subject to Him." 00:25:45.84\00:25:48.94 Want you to remember 00:25:48.97\00:25:50.12 those angles, authorities and powers 00:25:50.15\00:25:53.73 because we are going to come back to those 00:25:53.76\00:25:56.10 a little bit later on. 00:25:56.13\00:25:58.90 So according to the immediately succeeding context 00:25:58.93\00:26:01.94 where did Jesus go? 00:26:01.97\00:26:04.90 He went but He didn't go down. 00:26:04.93\00:26:07.57 He went where? 00:26:07.60\00:26:09.13 Up to heaven. Very same word. 00:26:09.16\00:26:13.63 Now what does this text mean 00:26:13.66\00:26:15.39 when it says that He went and preached. 00:26:15.42\00:26:17.92 Christians add an expression. 00:26:17.95\00:26:19.31 They say He went and He preached 00:26:19.34\00:26:21.53 the good news of the gospel. 00:26:21.56\00:26:23.64 Where do you find the good news of the gospel 00:26:23.67\00:26:26.17 in that passage? 00:26:26.20\00:26:28.55 It's not there. 00:26:28.58\00:26:30.20 It's an assumption that people make. 00:26:30.23\00:26:34.08 Do you know that the word kerusso in Greek 00:26:34.11\00:26:37.12 which means to preach 00:26:37.15\00:26:38.64 does not necessarily always mean preach? 00:26:38.67\00:26:42.90 It is used in the New Testament 00:26:42.93\00:26:46.61 in the sense of proclaimed or announced. 00:26:46.64\00:26:51.55 Let's notice a couple of examples, 00:26:51.58\00:26:52.99 Revelation 5:2, Revelation 5:2. 00:26:53.02\00:26:58.02 This is speaking about the scene 00:26:58.05\00:26:59.56 where there is one seated on the throne 00:26:59.59\00:27:02.01 and He has a scroll in his hand. 00:27:02.04\00:27:06.87 It says there in Verse 2, 00:27:06.90\00:27:08.65 "Then I saw a strong angel" what 00:27:08.68\00:27:14.26 "proclaiming" that's the same word Kerusso 00:27:14.29\00:27:17.90 "proclaiming with a loud voice, 00:27:17.93\00:27:20.64 'Who is worthy to open the scroll, 00:27:20.67\00:27:23.65 and to loose its seals?'" 00:27:23.68\00:27:26.75 So the word Kerusso can mean also to what? 00:27:26.78\00:27:30.06 To proclaim or to announce. 00:27:30.09\00:27:34.14 Let us, another example, Luke 8:39. 00:27:34.17\00:27:38.06 Luke 8:39. 00:27:38.09\00:27:43.05 This is after Jesus has cast out 00:27:43.08\00:27:45.36 the demons from the men of Gadara 00:27:45.39\00:27:50.76 and He says to them "'Return to your own house, 00:27:50.79\00:27:53.94 and tell what great things God has done for you. 00:27:53.97\00:27:59.81 And he went his way and" what, 00:27:59.84\00:28:03.51 "And proclaimed throughout the whole city 00:28:03.54\00:28:06.81 what great things Jesus had done for him." 00:28:06.84\00:28:10.71 He went he proclaimed and he announced 00:28:10.74\00:28:14.03 the greatness and glory of Jesus. 00:28:14.06\00:28:17.76 So doesn't necessarily mean the preaching of the gospel. 00:28:17.79\00:28:22.25 That's an assumption. 00:28:22.28\00:28:24.01 It's an assumption that Jesus went down, 00:28:24.04\00:28:26.77 it's an assumption that he preach the gospel. 00:28:26.80\00:28:29.28 Now what about the spirits in prison? 00:28:29.31\00:28:32.91 Some people say, well, the spirits in prison 00:28:32.94\00:28:35.55 are the spirits of the dead. 00:28:35.58\00:28:41.60 That's not what the Bible teaches. 00:28:41.63\00:28:44.14 All you have to do is look up the word spirits 00:28:44.17\00:28:47.44 in the New Testament. 00:28:47.47\00:28:50.66 Let's notice a few verses that speak about spirits. 00:28:50.69\00:28:53.45 These spirits are not spirits of human beings at all, 00:28:53.48\00:28:56.25 they are evil spirits. 00:28:56.28\00:28:59.16 Let's read the text Luke 10:20. 00:28:59.19\00:29:03.63 "Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, 00:29:03.66\00:29:08.52 that the spirits are subject to you," 00:29:08.55\00:29:12.19 what spirits are being spoken about there" Demons. 00:29:12.22\00:29:16.78 "But rather rejoice 00:29:16.81\00:29:17.90 because your names are written in heaven." 00:29:17.93\00:29:20.28 Luke 11:24-26. 00:29:20.31\00:29:23.03 Let's notice what the word spirits mean. 00:29:23.06\00:29:25.33 Luke 11:24-26, 00:29:25.36\00:29:27.35 "When the unclean spirit goes out of a man, 00:29:27.38\00:29:30.63 he goes through dry places, 00:29:30.66\00:29:32.03 seeking rest and finding none, 00:29:32.06\00:29:33.99 he says, 'I will return to my house from which I came. 00:29:34.02\00:29:37.75 And when he comes, he finds it swept and put in order. 00:29:37.78\00:29:41.27 Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits" 00:29:41.30\00:29:48.22 Is this talking about evil spirits, demons? 00:29:48.25\00:29:50.90 Absolutely. 00:29:50.93\00:29:52.34 "More wicked than himself and they enter and dwell there 00:29:52.37\00:29:55.91 in the last state of that man is worse than the first." 00:29:55.94\00:30:00.39 Let's read one more Mark 1:27-28. 00:30:00.42\00:30:03.91 Mark 1:27-28. "Then they were all amazed, 00:30:03.94\00:30:09.92 so that they question among themselves saying 00:30:09.95\00:30:12.23 'What is this? 00:30:12.26\00:30:13.70 What new doctrine is this for with authority 00:30:13.73\00:30:17.38 he commands even the" what "The unclean spirits 00:30:17.41\00:30:21.69 and they obeyed him.'" 00:30:21.72\00:30:24.99 So what are the spirits? Demons. 00:30:25.02\00:30:29.93 So you are saying, pastor, that you are saying that Jesus 00:30:29.96\00:30:31.72 preached the gospel to demons? 00:30:31.75\00:30:34.85 No because the word preached 00:30:37.25\00:30:38.39 is not necessarily mean preach the Gospel. 00:30:38.42\00:30:41.72 We gonna come to that a little bit later on. 00:30:41.75\00:30:44.88 Now, it speaks here about the spirits in prison. 00:30:44.91\00:30:48.03 Now in the New Testament who are the spirits 00:30:48.06\00:30:51.06 that are uniformly spoken of as been in prison? 00:30:51.09\00:30:55.47 Fallen angels. Let's read some verses. 00:30:55.50\00:30:59.91 Let's start with the leader of all of the evil spirits. 00:30:59.94\00:31:02.46 Who is that? The devil. 00:31:02.49\00:31:05.43 Notice Revelation 20:1,3 Revelation 20:1,3. 00:31:05.46\00:31:10.55 "Then I saw an angel come down from heaven, 00:31:10.58\00:31:12.84 having the key of the bottomless pit" 00:31:12.87\00:31:14.92 actually it's to the abyss. And a great what? 00:31:14.95\00:31:18.12 "Chain in his hand." 00:31:18.15\00:31:21.10 Verse 3, "And it cast him that is the devil 00:31:21.13\00:31:23.72 into the bottomless pit" or the abyss, 00:31:23.75\00:31:25.93 and what did he do? 00:31:25.96\00:31:26.99 "He shut him up, and set a seal on him, 00:31:27.02\00:31:30.26 so that he should deceive the nations 00:31:30.29\00:31:31.93 no more till the thousand years were finished 00:31:31.96\00:31:34.04 but after these things he must be released for a little while." 00:31:34.07\00:31:37.26 And by the way in verse 7 if you want to read verse 7 00:31:37.29\00:31:40.58 I will do it. 00:31:40.61\00:31:41.71 It says, that at the end of the thousand years, 00:31:41.74\00:31:44.46 Satan who was chained will be released from his prison, 00:31:44.49\00:31:51.25 Spirits in prison. Spirits are demons 00:31:51.28\00:31:56.26 and they are spoken up at least the little to this point, 00:31:56.29\00:31:59.43 is spoken off as been where? In prison. 00:31:59.46\00:32:04.50 Now let's go to a couple of other verses Jude 6. 00:32:04.53\00:32:08.34 Jude 6, speaking about the evil angels it says 00:32:08.37\00:32:14.28 "And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, 00:32:14.31\00:32:19.18 but left their own abode, He has reserved in" what? 00:32:19.21\00:32:26.33 "Everlasting chains under darkness 00:32:26.36\00:32:32.04 for the judgment of the great day." 00:32:32.07\00:32:34.81 Who are the once who are in everlasting chains? 00:32:34.84\00:32:38.24 The wicked angels. 00:32:38.27\00:32:40.28 Notice 2 Peter 2:4. 2 Peter 2:4, 00:32:40.31\00:32:44.54 "For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, 00:32:44.57\00:32:48.71 but cast them down to hell 00:32:48.74\00:32:52.56 and delivered them into chains of darkness, 00:32:52.59\00:32:57.96 to be reserved for judgment." So let me ask you, 00:32:57.99\00:33:01.91 who are the spirits that are in prison or the spirits 00:33:01.94\00:33:05.05 that are chained? They are fallen angels. 00:33:05.08\00:33:09.94 So here it's saying that Jesus proclaimed 00:33:09.97\00:33:13.87 something to the evil spirits or to the fallen angels 00:33:13.90\00:33:20.25 when he, what? When He resurrected. 00:33:20.28\00:33:28.04 Because He was put to death in the flesh, 00:33:28.07\00:33:31.85 He was resurrected in the spirit and in that state He went 00:33:31.88\00:33:37.43 and He preached to the spirits in prison. 00:33:37.46\00:33:41.32 If God had wonder saying that he preached 00:33:41.35\00:33:42.94 to the spirits in prison after He died. 00:33:42.97\00:33:45.49 It would have said, He was put to death in the flesh. 00:33:45.52\00:33:49.44 He went and preached to the spirits in prison 00:33:49.47\00:33:52.08 and then He was made alive by the spirit. 00:33:52.11\00:33:54.60 But the antecedent shows 00:33:56.67\00:33:59.39 that He was put to death in the flesh, 00:33:59.42\00:34:01.15 He resurrected in the spirit and in this state 00:34:01.18\00:34:04.38 He went and He proclaimed something 00:34:04.41\00:34:07.32 to Satan and his angels. 00:34:07.35\00:34:11.31 The question is what did He proclaimed 00:34:11.34\00:34:14.66 to Satan and his angels? 00:34:14.69\00:34:17.58 Let's go to 1 Peter 3:22. 00:34:17.61\00:34:22.60 When Jesus goes to heaven, 00:34:22.63\00:34:24.19 when Jesus ascends to heaven, when He resurrects. 00:34:24.22\00:34:27.21 There are powers that are made what? 00:34:30.98\00:34:34.99 Subject to Him. Notice, "Who has gone into heaven" 00:34:35.02\00:34:39.78 So he didn't go down he went what? 00:34:39.81\00:34:42.25 Up. "Who has gone into heaven 00:34:42.28\00:34:46.06 and is at the right hand of God," 00:34:46.09\00:34:49.45 and now notice "Angels, and authorities 00:34:49.48\00:34:53.31 and powers having been made" what" "Subject to him." 00:34:53.34\00:34:57.84 Let me ask you who are those angels authorities and powers? 00:34:57.87\00:35:01.71 There are other texts in the New Testament 00:35:01.74\00:35:03.57 that indicate that these are evil angel 00:35:03.60\00:35:06.46 authorities and powers. 00:35:06.49\00:35:08.49 You say, where is that? Go to Matthew 12:28-29. 00:35:08.52\00:35:13.22 Are you starting to get the picture here? 00:35:13.25\00:35:15.66 Matthew 12:28-29. Here Jesus says, 00:35:15.69\00:35:21.95 "But if I cast out demons by the spirit of God 00:35:21.98\00:35:25.37 surely the kingdom of God has come upon you. 00:35:25.40\00:35:28.22 'Or how can one enter a strong mans house 00:35:28.25\00:35:33.08 and plunder his goods?" 00:35:33.11\00:35:34.82 Who is the strong man here? The devil. 00:35:34.85\00:35:39.20 "Unless he first" what? "Binds the strong man 00:35:39.23\00:35:43.57 and then he will" what? "He will plunder his house." 00:35:43.60\00:35:50.49 By the way at the cross of Calvary did Jesus 00:35:50.52\00:35:54.51 ransack the house of the enemy? 00:35:54.54\00:35:58.63 Did Jesus take all the dominion 00:35:58.66\00:36:00.75 and ruler ship of the world legally. 00:36:00.78\00:36:03.89 Was the devil cast out of heaven as the prince of this world 00:36:03.92\00:36:07.72 and the representative of this world? 00:36:07.75\00:36:09.70 Yes, he was exiled. 00:36:09.73\00:36:11.98 Notice what we find in John 12: 30-31. 00:36:14.87\00:36:18.67 John 12: 30-31. Here Jesus says, 00:36:18.70\00:36:23.30 "Now is the judgment of this world" 00:36:23.33\00:36:26.09 this is shortly before his death. 00:36:26.12\00:36:28.35 "Now the ruler of this world will be" what? 00:36:28.38\00:36:34.24 "Cast out." 00:36:34.27\00:36:36.02 Let me ask you, could the devil go to heaven 00:36:36.05\00:36:37.36 representing this world before the cross. 00:36:37.39\00:36:40.02 Sure he could. Read the Book of Job. 00:36:40.05\00:36:42.88 Read 2 chronicles 18: 18-22. 00:36:42.91\00:36:48.75 It says that whenever there was a heavenly council in heaven 00:36:48.78\00:36:51.22 Satan went representing planet earth 00:36:51.25\00:36:53.42 because he had taken away the throne from Adam. 00:36:53.45\00:36:56.79 But when Jesus over came the devil on the cross Satan 00:36:56.82\00:37:00.34 was cast out as the ruler of this world 00:37:00.37\00:37:03.22 and now Jesus represents planet earth. 00:37:03.25\00:37:06.33 The devil has been exiled and he is bound to this planet, 00:37:06.36\00:37:10.21 to planet earth as a result of what Jesus has done. 00:37:10.24\00:37:15.35 That's why Jesus says, 00:37:15.38\00:37:16.73 I saw Satan fall like lighting from heaven. 00:37:16.76\00:37:21.07 I love that. I mean how fast is lightening. 00:37:21.10\00:37:26.71 I mean this was fast fall real all the way down. 00:37:26.74\00:37:32.70 But the struggle was great. Wasn't it? 00:37:32.73\00:37:38.83 The Bible calls this the hour of the powers of darkness 00:37:38.86\00:37:42.87 when Jesus went through His trails in Gethsemane 00:37:42.90\00:37:45.13 and on the cross. 00:37:45.16\00:37:47.49 We can hear Jesus saying my Father, 00:37:47.52\00:37:49.83 if this cup can pass from me, let it be so, 00:37:49.86\00:37:54.18 nevertheless not my will be done but yours. 00:37:54.21\00:37:58.32 Ellen white says, that the destiny of the world 00:37:58.35\00:38:00.95 hung as a by a thread. 00:38:00.98\00:38:04.58 She says that Jesus was tempted to throwing the towel 00:38:04.61\00:38:07.98 and go back to heaven and allow the human race to parish. 00:38:08.01\00:38:12.69 In that case Satan would have been 00:38:12.72\00:38:13.82 the ruler of this world indefinitely. 00:38:13.85\00:38:18.31 She says that the devil tortured Jesus with temptations to try 00:38:18.34\00:38:22.69 and get Him to fall. 00:38:22.72\00:38:25.69 We can hear the agony in the voice of Jesus when he said 00:38:25.72\00:38:28.51 "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken me? 00:38:28.54\00:38:32.78 We can hear the agony when Jesus said it is finished. 00:38:32.81\00:38:37.74 We can hear the agony when Jesus says, 00:38:37.77\00:38:39.73 Father into your hands I come into my spirit. 00:38:39.76\00:38:45.09 When Jesus died on Friday and said it is finished, 00:38:45.12\00:38:49.68 the devil knew that his kingdom was finished. 00:38:49.71\00:38:54.47 And when Jesus resurrected, Jesus came out of the grave 00:38:54.50\00:38:57.46 and he proclaimed his victory over the evil spirits. 00:38:57.49\00:39:02.70 Allow me to read you here a passage that we find 00:39:02.73\00:39:06.05 in The Desire of Ages, page 780. 00:39:06.08\00:39:09.30 Desire of Ages, 780 on the resurrection of Jesus. 00:39:09.33\00:39:14.58 Ellen White says this, "Hosts of evil angels 00:39:14.61\00:39:18.81 were gathered about the place." That is the tomb of Jesus. 00:39:18.84\00:39:23.75 Then she describes these are not her words but mine. 00:39:23.78\00:39:26.98 I am just shortening her statements. 00:39:27.01\00:39:29.49 Then she describes how Gabriel 00:39:29.52\00:39:31.60 descends to the tomb in these words. 00:39:31.63\00:39:35.15 "The earth trembles at his approach, 00:39:35.18\00:39:39.06 the hosts of darkness flee, and as he rolls away the stone, 00:39:39.09\00:39:46.65 heaven seems to come down to the earth. 00:39:46.68\00:39:49.35 The soldiers see him removing the stone as he would a pebble, 00:39:49.38\00:39:54.53 and hear him cry, Son of God, come forth, 00:39:54.56\00:39:57.81 Thy Father calls Thee. 00:39:57.84\00:40:00.13 They see Jesus come forth from the grave, 00:40:00.16\00:40:04.56 and hear Him proclaim over the rent sepulcher, 00:40:04.59\00:40:09.06 'I am the resurrection, and the life.'" 00:40:09.09\00:40:14.04 What is Jesus proclaiming when he comes up 00:40:14.07\00:40:16.69 from the tomb and when he ascends to heaven? 00:40:16.72\00:40:18.82 He is proclaiming his victory over the spirits in prison? 00:40:18.85\00:40:22.87 Over the devil and over his angels. 00:40:22.90\00:40:26.35 You say now pastor, 00:40:26.38\00:40:27.41 you are that to follow these principalities 00:40:27.44\00:40:29.41 and powers in angles that are spoken off there 00:40:29.44\00:40:31.57 in 1 Peter 3 is referring to evil powers? 00:40:31.60\00:40:35.12 Absolutely. Let's read some verses. 00:40:35.15\00:40:38.23 Go with me to Colossians 2:14,15. 00:40:38.26\00:40:42.33 Colossians chapter 2:14, 15. 00:40:42.36\00:40:47.49 And you are going to notice immediately similar terminology 00:40:47.52\00:40:50.70 to what we read in 1 Peter 3. 00:40:50.73\00:40:52.56 "And you, being dead in your trespasses 00:40:52.59\00:40:58.76 and the uncircumcision of your flesh, 00:40:58.79\00:41:03.49 He has made what alive together with Him." 00:41:03.52\00:41:07.25 Is that the same terminology we notice in 1 Peter 3? 00:41:07.28\00:41:10.89 Put to death in the flesh, that made alive by, what? 00:41:10.92\00:41:15.67 By the spirit. Here it says "You who dead in your trespasses 00:41:15.70\00:41:18.71 and the uncircumcision of your flesh, 00:41:18.74\00:41:20.63 He has made what alive together with Him 00:41:20.66\00:41:23.61 having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out 00:41:23.64\00:41:27.37 the handwriting of requirements that was against us, 00:41:27.40\00:41:29.90 which was contrary to us. 00:41:29.93\00:41:31.25 And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it" 00:41:31.28\00:41:34.72 to the what? "To the cross. 00:41:34.75\00:41:36.71 And now notice this. "Having" what" "Disarmed." 00:41:36.74\00:41:42.40 What did he do at the cross? 00:41:42.43\00:41:44.90 What does it mean to disarm? Their weapons are removed. 00:41:44.93\00:41:51.06 "Having disarmed" what? 00:41:51.09\00:41:53.39 "Principalities and powers, He made" a what? 00:41:53.42\00:41:58.97 "A public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it." 00:41:59.00\00:42:05.17 That is in the cross. 00:42:05.20\00:42:08.02 Did he make a public spectacle of them 00:42:08.05\00:42:10.45 when he came out and said, I am the resurrection, 00:42:10.48\00:42:12.74 and the life?" Yes, the evil spirits scattered. 00:42:12.77\00:42:18.21 The roman soldiers fell as if they were dead. 00:42:18.24\00:42:22.88 Notice Romans 8: 38,39. Chapter 8:38 and 39. 00:42:22.91\00:42:29.54 Once again speaking about principalities and powers. 00:42:29.57\00:42:33.45 Here the apostle Paul says 00:42:33.48\00:42:34.74 "For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, 00:42:34.77\00:42:38.62 nor angels nor principalities nor powers," 00:42:38.65\00:42:43.86 and then later on in the verse he says can separate us 00:42:43.89\00:42:47.18 from the love of God 00:42:47.21\00:42:48.24 which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. 00:42:48.27\00:42:49.67 Let me ask you, if these were good angels 00:42:49.70\00:42:51.30 and good principalities and good powers, 00:42:51.33\00:42:53.22 why would they want to separate us from the Lord? 00:42:53.25\00:42:58.11 Are you with me? Notice Ephesians 6:12, 00:42:58.14\00:43:02.10 time in again this comes through. 00:43:02.13\00:43:03.51 Ephesians 6:12 here the apostle Paul says 00:43:03.54\00:43:07.28 "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, 00:43:07.31\00:43:11.61 but against principalities, against powers, 00:43:11.64\00:43:15.16 against the rulers of the darkness of this age, 00:43:15.19\00:43:18.67 against spiritual hosts of wickedness" where? 00:43:18.70\00:43:22.24 "In the heavenly places." 00:43:22.27\00:43:23.47 What did Jesus do when He ascended to heaven? 00:43:23.50\00:43:27.58 He proclaimed His what? 00:43:27.61\00:43:29.45 He proclaimed His victory over Satan 00:43:29.48\00:43:32.75 and over his angels. 00:43:32.78\00:43:37.07 In other words he went down when He died 00:43:37.10\00:43:40.29 but when He resurrected he went up. 00:43:40.32\00:43:43.67 Notice Ephesians 4:8-10. 00:43:43.70\00:43:47.16 Ephesians 4:8-10. 00:43:47.19\00:43:51.94 "Therefore he says, 'When he ascended high, 00:43:51.97\00:43:56.83 He led captivity captive,'" by the way that's speaking 00:43:56.86\00:44:01.82 about those who resurrected with Jesus 00:44:01.85\00:44:04.71 you can read it in Matthew 27:51-53, 00:44:04.74\00:44:07.28 they were captives of the grave and what Jesus do, 00:44:07.31\00:44:10.11 Jesus ransacked the grave. Who had the keys before this? 00:44:10.14\00:44:15.10 The prince of evil. Now Jesus goes in he grabs the keys, 00:44:15.13\00:44:18.69 and he opens the graves. 00:44:18.72\00:44:22.44 And it says, "And he gave gifts to men." 00:44:22.47\00:44:24.07 "Now this 'He ascended' what does it mean 00:44:24.10\00:44:28.47 but that He also first" what? 00:44:28.50\00:44:30.48 "Descended into the lower parts of the earth?" 00:44:30.51\00:44:32.64 In other words He was buried. 00:44:32.67\00:44:34.57 "He who descended is also the one who" what? 00:44:34.60\00:44:37.55 "Who ascended far above all the heavens, 00:44:37.58\00:44:41.40 that he might fill all things." So it's summarized. 00:44:41.43\00:44:48.29 Jesus died, 00:44:48.32\00:44:52.87 He resurrected, He ascended. 00:44:52.90\00:44:57.91 And as He ascended he proclaimed his what? 00:44:57.94\00:45:01.01 He proclaimed his victory over Satan and his angels 00:45:01.04\00:45:05.53 and Satan was cast out of heaven 00:45:05.56\00:45:07.21 as a representative of this world and he was earth bound. 00:45:07.24\00:45:11.79 Now let's go to Ephesians 2:4-6. 00:45:11.82\00:45:16.36 Ephesians 2:4-6, this is another passage that is parallel 00:45:16.39\00:45:21.14 to first Peter chapter 3:18. 00:45:21.17\00:45:23.66 Notice "But God, who is rich in mercy, 00:45:23.69\00:45:29.54 because of His great love with which He loved us, 00:45:29.57\00:45:33.67 even when we were" what? Dead like Jesus right? 00:45:33.70\00:45:41.07 "Dead in trespasses and sins." 00:45:41.10\00:45:45.10 He was dead because of our sins. "Made us" what? 00:45:45.13\00:45:51.34 "Alive together with" whom? 00:45:51.37\00:45:56.28 "With Christ. By grace you have been saved." 00:45:56.31\00:45:59.98 And then what did he do? 00:46:00.01\00:46:01.17 He made us alive and what raised us up together 00:46:01.20\00:46:06.81 and made us what? 00:46:06.84\00:46:08.62 Sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus. 00:46:08.65\00:46:14.91 Do we go with the same process that Jesus went through? 00:46:14.94\00:46:18.66 Died, resurrected, ascended 00:46:18.69\00:46:25.82 and sat at the right hand of God. 00:46:25.85\00:46:27.69 You say I am not at the right hand of God 00:46:27.72\00:46:29.26 I am in Fresno Central church. 00:46:29.29\00:46:32.81 But through Jesus we sit at the right hand of God. 00:46:32.84\00:46:37.65 We have died with Him, we have been buried with Him, 00:46:37.68\00:46:40.20 we have been resurrected with Him, 00:46:40.23\00:46:41.54 we have ascended with Him 00:46:41.57\00:46:42.88 and we are seen at the right hand of God with Him. 00:46:42.91\00:46:46.37 That's why the beautiful thing is we don't have to worry about 00:46:46.40\00:46:49.38 what God things of us. 00:46:49.41\00:46:51.26 We have to worry about what God thinks about 00:46:51.29\00:46:53.19 Jesus our substitute. 00:46:53.22\00:46:58.17 So in other words Peter is saying the experience 00:46:58.20\00:47:00.49 that Jesus went through is the same experience 00:47:00.52\00:47:03.80 that we go through in him. 00:47:03.83\00:47:06.54 Is he trying to encourage the people there? 00:47:06.57\00:47:08.97 He most certainly is. Let's read one other verse. 00:47:09.00\00:47:12.79 Romans 6:3, 5 on this specific point of sharing 00:47:12.82\00:47:17.70 in the experience of Jesus through Him. 00:47:17.73\00:47:20.67 It says in Romans 6:3, "Or do you not know 00:47:20.70\00:47:24.83 that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus 00:47:24.86\00:47:28.60 were baptized into" what? "His death?" 00:47:28.63\00:47:32.48 When is that we benefit from everything of Jesus did? 00:47:32.51\00:47:34.87 When we are what? When we are baptized. 00:47:34.90\00:47:37.88 See when we are baptized- this is the wonderful thing. 00:47:37.91\00:47:40.54 When we are baptized we die, we are buried in the water, 00:47:40.57\00:47:45.91 we come out of the water we resurrect the notice of life 00:47:45.94\00:47:49.40 and then Jesus says, this is my beloved Son. 00:47:49.43\00:47:51.78 We sit with Jesus in heavenly places. 00:47:51.81\00:47:56.95 Verse 5 for if we have been untied together 00:47:56.98\00:48:01.32 in the likeness of his death, certainly we also shall be 00:48:01.35\00:48:05.41 in the likeness of His resurrection." 00:48:05.44\00:48:10.44 Now you notice one further thing in this passage, 00:48:10.47\00:48:14.67 it speaks about the flood in Noah's day 00:48:14.70\00:48:19.53 being a type or a symbol of the experience 00:48:19.56\00:48:23.47 that Jesus went through and the experience 00:48:23.50\00:48:27.09 that we go through when we are baptized. 00:48:27.12\00:48:30.22 Now let's take a look at that. 00:48:30.25\00:48:33.60 Jesus came to this world, 00:48:33.63\00:48:36.72 He suffered, 00:48:40.77\00:48:43.05 reproach He died- by the way He spoke about 00:48:43.08\00:48:47.52 His death as a baptism. 00:48:47.55\00:48:48.71 Can you be baptized with the baptism 00:48:48.74\00:48:51.01 that I will be baptized with? 00:48:51.04\00:48:52.39 Jesus asked his death was a baptism? 00:48:52.42\00:48:56.29 And then He came forth to newness of life victorious 00:48:56.32\00:49:01.49 over all of his oppressive 00:49:01.52\00:49:02.99 and He sat at right hand of God. 00:49:06.60\00:49:10.19 The flood is used as an illustration of this. 00:49:10.22\00:49:14.00 You see in the days of Noah, Noah was surely oppressed 00:49:14.03\00:49:18.11 by his enemies in that old sinful world. 00:49:18.14\00:49:23.24 But Peter is saying that Noah and his family entered the ark 00:49:23.27\00:49:27.04 and they went through the, what? 00:49:27.07\00:49:29.49 They went through the waters which symbolizes baptism. 00:49:29.52\00:49:34.78 And when they came out on the other side of the waters, 00:49:34.81\00:49:37.25 what happened to with all of their oppressive? 00:49:37.28\00:49:40.41 All of the oppressive have been buried. 00:49:40.44\00:49:42.35 All of their old life had been buried in the waters 00:49:42.38\00:49:44.64 and they came out to a new world. 00:49:44.67\00:49:50.19 That's the reason why the apostle Peter 00:49:50.22\00:49:52.59 is using this illustration of the flood. 00:49:52.62\00:49:54.55 He is saying that as Noah is oppressed 00:49:54.58\00:49:58.17 but he went into the ark, went through the waters 00:49:58.20\00:50:01.99 and came out the other side 00:50:02.02\00:50:03.73 with all of his oppressive being buried. 00:50:03.76\00:50:06.76 All of his whole life being buried 00:50:06.79\00:50:08.41 and coming out to a new world 00:50:08.44\00:50:09.76 that's what happened with Jesus. 00:50:09.79\00:50:11.33 1Jesus was also surely oppressive. 00:50:11.36\00:50:14.16 He was put to death in the flesh. 00:50:14.19\00:50:16.17 He experienced the baptism of death 00:50:16.20\00:50:19.76 but He also came up on the other side of death 00:50:19.79\00:50:22.35 having buried His whole life so to speak 00:50:22.38\00:50:27.08 left it in the tomb and came forth on the other side new. 00:50:27.11\00:50:34.45 And then Peter wants to apply it also to us. 00:50:34.48\00:50:39.49 The apostle Peter says, the experience that Noah 00:50:39.52\00:50:43.10 went through is an illustration of the experience 00:50:43.13\00:50:48.12 that Jesus went through and the experience 00:50:48.15\00:50:51.89 that Jesus went through is also an illustration 00:50:51.92\00:50:55.07 of what we go through when we die to sin, 00:50:55.10\00:51:01.58 when our sin is buried in the waters, 00:51:01.61\00:51:04.71 when we resurrect to newness of life after our old life 00:51:04.74\00:51:07.92 is been buried in the waters and when we ascend, 00:51:07.95\00:51:13.11 figuratively speaking and sit, where? 00:51:13.14\00:51:16.33 And sit at the right hand of God. 00:51:16.36\00:51:18.33 You see, the problem in Peter's day 00:51:18.36\00:51:20.39 is that the church was being slowly afflicted and oppressed. 00:51:20.42\00:51:23.58 I am gonna read it in a moment. 00:51:23.61\00:51:25.75 They were about to give up Christianity. 00:51:25.78\00:51:28.86 They were saying it's not worthy. 00:51:28.89\00:51:29.97 Too many trails, too many tribulations, 00:51:30.00\00:51:31.58 our enemies are after us, after us. 00:51:31.61\00:51:33.65 We are been afflicted, we are dying, 00:51:33.68\00:51:35.21 we been prosecuted. Jesus says don't worry. 00:51:35.24\00:51:39.00 You see, Jesus went through the same thing. 00:51:39.03\00:51:40.75 He gained the victory. 00:51:40.78\00:51:41.81 And if you are in Him it doesn't make any difference. 00:51:41.84\00:51:44.32 You can gain the victory as well. 00:51:44.35\00:51:46.44 Let's read this, 1 Peter 3:13-17, 00:51:46.47\00:51:52.48 here the apostle Peter explains why he is giving this passage. 00:51:52.51\00:51:56.88 Its not some theological passage, 00:51:56.91\00:51:58.73 the purpose is practical. 00:51:58.76\00:52:03.10 1 Peter 3:13, "And who is he that will harm you," 00:52:03.13\00:52:09.18 see that we are been harmed, 00:52:09.21\00:52:11.67 "if you become followers of what is good? 00:52:11.70\00:52:15.53 But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, 00:52:15.56\00:52:19.34 you are blessed." Was Jesus blessed? Yes. 00:52:19.37\00:52:25.56 And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled," 00:52:25.59\00:52:29.55 That's what Noah went through. 00:52:29.58\00:52:31.91 That's what Jesus went through. 00:52:31.94\00:52:33.86 So don't worry about it. It happened before. 00:52:33.89\00:52:35.71 Don't they've done that? 00:52:35.74\00:52:38.73 "But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, 00:52:38.76\00:52:41.01 and always be ready to give defense to everyone 00:52:41.04\00:52:43.88 who asked you a reason of the hope that is in you, 00:52:43.91\00:52:47.74 with meekness and fear, having a good conscience, 00:52:47.77\00:52:51.71 that when they defame you as evildoers, 00:52:51.74\00:52:55.46 those who revile your good conduct in Christ 00:52:55.49\00:52:59.24 may be ashamed." 00:52:59.27\00:53:01.12 It what happened with the devil and his angels? 00:53:01.15\00:53:03.62 Oh yes. "For it is better, if it is the will of God, 00:53:03.65\00:53:08.57 to suffer for doing good than for doing evil." 00:53:08.60\00:53:13.16 Let's read one more passage before we close. 00:53:13.19\00:53:15.39 First Peter 4:12,13. 00:53:15.42\00:53:17.90 Here Peter expresses 00:53:17.93\00:53:19.00 the practical purpose for his theology. 00:53:19.03\00:53:21.87 First Peter 4:12,13. 00:53:21.90\00:53:27.17 "Beloved, do not think it strange concerning 00:53:27.20\00:53:33.07 the fiery trial which is to try you, 00:53:33.10\00:53:37.25 as though some strange thing happened unto you," 00:53:37.28\00:53:41.15 let us don't think that your trails 00:53:41.18\00:53:42.86 and tribulations are really some wired strange thing 00:53:42.89\00:53:46.25 that has never happened before. 00:53:46.28\00:53:50.57 "But rejoice 00:53:50.60\00:53:54.81 to the extent that you" what? 00:53:54.84\00:53:59.23 There is a key word. 00:53:59.26\00:54:00.34 "That you partaker of Christ's sufferings," 00:54:00.37\00:54:07.10 is that the power where he is oppressed 00:54:07.13\00:54:08.78 and he has put to death in the flesh? Yes. 00:54:08.81\00:54:12.78 "You are partake of Christ sufferings," 00:54:12.81\00:54:16.04 now notice this the promise, 00:54:16.07\00:54:17.95 "that when His glory is revealed," when is that? 00:54:17.98\00:54:23.74 When Jesus comes. "You may also be" what? 00:54:23.77\00:54:28.97 "Glad with exceeding joy." 00:54:29.00\00:54:35.34 Is this a magnificent passage? 00:54:35.37\00:54:38.31 It has been totally misinterpreted by Christians 00:54:38.34\00:54:43.44 to give the idea that Jesus went down to hell 00:54:43.47\00:54:46.29 and He preached to all of these disincarnated spirits, 00:54:46.32\00:54:49.73 who sinned at the time of the flood. 00:54:49.76\00:54:51.61 He preached the gospel to them giving them 00:54:51.64\00:54:53.84 a second chance to be saved. 00:54:53.87\00:54:55.57 Where is that in of this passage? 00:54:55.60\00:54:59.39 No where. It's an assumption. 00:54:59.42\00:55:03.58 It's injecting into the text what is not in the text. 00:55:03.61\00:55:08.62 And it's done with a thief on the cross, 00:55:08.65\00:55:10.72 its done with the Witch of Endor, 00:55:10.75\00:55:12.51 its done with absent from the body 00:55:12.54\00:55:14.54 and present with the Lord, 00:55:14.57\00:55:15.60 its done with apostle desired to report 00:55:15.63\00:55:18.01 and be with the Lord. It's done with the dead 00:55:18.04\00:55:22.65 who stand before God, 00:55:22.68\00:55:24.03 the souls that cry from under the alter, 00:55:24.06\00:55:26.32 which are passages that we are gonna study. 00:55:26.35\00:55:28.43 You see, if we study these passages carefully 00:55:28.46\00:55:32.69 we discover that they are not teaching 00:55:32.72\00:55:34.66 what people say they are teaching, 00:55:34.69\00:55:38.06 when you allow scripture to interpret scripture. 00:55:38.09\00:55:42.64 I like to bring this to a conclusion 00:55:42.67\00:55:44.16 by reading 2 Timothy 2:11,12. 00:55:44.19\00:55:46.79 Here the apostle Paul has the same sequence suffering victory. 00:55:46.82\00:55:52.91 There is no suffering there is no victory with out what? 00:55:52.94\00:55:57.30 Suffering. We must partake of the sufferings of Christ. 00:55:57.33\00:56:03.04 We must go through His experience. 00:56:03.07\00:56:04.46 Do we have the benefit of His example? 00:56:04.49\00:56:07.95 When we go through sufferings that Jesus when through 00:56:07.98\00:56:10.11 and He came out victoriously not a problem. 00:56:10.14\00:56:13.37 2 Timothy 2: 11,12. 00:56:13.40\00:56:17.24 "For if we died with Him, 00:56:17.27\00:56:22.20 we shall also live with Him." 00:56:22.23\00:56:26.88 Is that a beautiful for all of us? 00:56:26.91\00:56:29.82 If we endure, that is if we pacifier 00:56:29.85\00:56:35.50 in the mist of suffering we shall also reign with Him. 00:56:35.53\00:56:43.49 That's a marvelous promise, isn't it? 00:56:43.52\00:56:47.75 And the promises of God are given to us for us to claim Him. 00:56:47.78\00:56:53.50 So don't get discouraged when we suffer. 00:56:53.53\00:56:58.21 When you go though trails and tribulations just remember 00:56:58.24\00:57:00.71 that you are just partaking of what happened to Christ. 00:57:00.74\00:57:04.75 And if we suffer with Him, the Bible says 00:57:04.78\00:57:08.53 that we shall also rain with Him. 00:57:08.56\00:57:11.89 Are we looking forward to the day when Jesus comes 00:57:11.92\00:57:13.93 and we shall rain with Him? 00:57:13.96\00:57:15.33 And then we will ascend to heaven, 00:57:15.36\00:57:17.89 where all of the wicked powers scatter 00:57:17.92\00:57:21.22 and Jesus will proclaim His final victory 00:57:21.25\00:57:25.17 over the principalities and the powers. 00:57:25.20\00:57:29.04
