Shall we bow our heads for prayer? 00:00:34.79\00:00:38.07 Our Father in heaven, 00:00:38.10\00:00:40.03 what a joy it is to come into Your presence 00:00:40.06\00:00:43.23 and to know that because You have given us 00:00:43.26\00:00:45.95 Your word and because of the Holy Spirit, 00:00:45.98\00:00:49.07 we can understand Your will for these last days. 00:00:49.10\00:00:52.85 And, Father, we ask that as we open Your word 00:00:52.88\00:00:56.34 that Your Holy Spirit will be with us and teach us. 00:00:56.37\00:01:00.57 Help us to understand the times that we're living in. 00:01:00.60\00:01:04.12 Help us to understand that Jesus will soon come 00:01:04.15\00:01:07.50 and that we need to prepare for that great event. 00:01:07.53\00:01:11.30 We thank you, Father, 00:01:11.33\00:01:12.70 for hearing and answering our prayer, 00:01:12.73\00:01:14.54 for we ask it in Jesus' name. Amen. 00:01:14.57\00:01:17.70 I'd like us to go back 00:01:19.44\00:01:20.81 in our minds to the year 1445 B.C. 00:01:20.84\00:01:27.66 This is believed to be 00:01:27.69\00:01:29.55 the date of the exodus of Israel from Egypt. 00:01:29.58\00:01:34.34 Now approximately three months after they left Egypt, 00:01:34.37\00:01:37.47 they arrived at Mount Sinai. 00:01:37.50\00:01:40.02 Now God had delivered them, freely, 00:01:40.05\00:01:43.67 without any merit on their part. 00:01:43.70\00:01:46.59 And when they arrived at Mount Sinai, 00:01:46.62\00:01:48.52 God wanted to make a covenant with them. 00:01:48.55\00:01:51.78 In other words, God wanted to be their God 00:01:51.81\00:01:53.82 and He wanted Israel to be His people. 00:01:53.85\00:01:57.50 And so at the foot of Mount Sinai, 00:01:57.53\00:02:00.56 we find God speaking to Moses and telling him that He wanted 00:02:00.59\00:02:04.66 to make a covenant with Israel. 00:02:04.69\00:02:07.72 We find this offer of a covenant in Exodus 19:4-6. 00:02:07.75\00:02:14.26 Exodus 19:4-6. 00:02:14.29\00:02:20.06 It says there, "You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, 00:02:20.09\00:02:25.66 and how I bore you on eagles' wings 00:02:25.69\00:02:28.93 and brought you to Myself. 00:02:28.96\00:02:31.49 Now therefore, if you will indeed 00:02:31.52\00:02:34.43 obey My voice and keep My covenant, 00:02:34.46\00:02:38.52 then you shall be a special treasure to me above all people, 00:02:38.55\00:02:43.39 for all the earth is Mine. 00:02:43.42\00:02:46.11 and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. 00:02:46.14\00:02:51.21 These are the words which you shall speak 00:02:51.24\00:02:54.42 to the children of Israel." 00:02:54.45\00:02:57.29 So God tells Moses, "I want you to go 00:02:57.32\00:02:59.48 and make an offer to Israel from My part. 00:02:59.51\00:03:02.24 That is that I want to enter a covenant with them. 00:03:02.27\00:03:05.65 But in order for this covenant to be valid, 00:03:05.68\00:03:08.19 they need to hear My voice, obey My voice 00:03:08.22\00:03:12.17 and they need to keep My covenant." 00:03:12.20\00:03:15.89 Well, if you read verse 8, you'll notice that 00:03:15.92\00:03:19.61 Israel sent Moses back to God and asked him to tell God, 00:03:19.64\00:03:25.42 "Everything that the Lord has said, we will do." 00:03:25.45\00:03:31.55 And so there you have the covenant. 00:03:31.58\00:03:33.49 God offers the covenant and Israel responds, 00:03:33.52\00:03:36.55 "Yes, everything that the Lord has said, we will do." 00:03:36.58\00:03:41.74 And so God makes His decision that He's going to come 00:03:41.77\00:03:45.40 and He's going to dwell there in the presence of Israel. 00:03:45.43\00:03:49.98 And so He tells Israel to build Him a sanctuary 00:03:50.01\00:03:53.56 that this covenant God might now dwell with them. 00:03:53.59\00:03:57.33 Notice Exodus 25:8 where God is speaking 00:03:57.36\00:04:02.43 about the building of this sanctuary. 00:04:02.46\00:04:06.72 God says to Moses, "And let them make Me a sanctuary 00:04:06.75\00:04:13.68 that I may dwell among them." 00:04:13.71\00:04:16.89 So God says, "They made a covenant with Me, 00:04:16.92\00:04:19.16 I'm their God, they are my people, 00:04:19.19\00:04:21.61 so now I'm going to come 00:04:21.64\00:04:23.25 and I'm going to dwell among them, 00:04:23.28\00:04:25.23 they need to build me a sanctuary." 00:04:25.26\00:04:28.58 Now when the sanctuary was finished, 00:04:28.61\00:04:30.20 God came and made Himself present in the sanctuary. 00:04:30.23\00:04:34.45 Notice Exodus 40:34, 35. 00:04:34.48\00:04:39.45 Exodus 40:34, 35. 00:04:39.48\00:04:43.59 This is the moment when the Shekinah 00:04:43.62\00:04:46.63 entered the sanctuary in the wilderness. 00:04:46.66\00:04:50.47 It says there in verse 34, 00:04:50.50\00:04:52.88 "Then the cloud covered the tabernacle of meeting 00:04:52.91\00:04:56.80 and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 00:04:56.83\00:05:01.59 And Moses was not able 00:05:01.62\00:05:03.17 to enter the tabernacle of meeting, 00:05:03.20\00:05:05.50 because the cloud rested above it, 00:05:05.53\00:05:08.01 and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle." 00:05:08.04\00:05:12.26 So God says, "Build Me a sanctuary" 00:05:12.29\00:05:14.27 and then His glory enters the sanctuary 00:05:14.30\00:05:17.85 and now the covenant God is dwelling in the midst of Israel. 00:05:17.88\00:05:22.84 Later on, God asked Israel 00:05:22.87\00:05:24.77 to build a more permanent structure 00:05:24.80\00:05:26.78 which came to be known as Solomon's temple. 00:05:26.81\00:05:29.80 A misnomer for sure, because it was not Solomon's temple, 00:05:29.83\00:05:34.20 it was the Lord's temple. 00:05:34.23\00:05:36.11 And it's interesting to notice that as soon as the temple 00:05:36.14\00:05:39.32 that God asked Solomon to build was finished, once again, 00:05:39.35\00:05:43.58 the Shekinah glory of God entered the temple. 00:05:43.61\00:05:47.73 Notice 1 Kings 8:10, 11. 00:05:47.76\00:05:51.99 1 Kings 8:10, 11. 00:05:52.02\00:05:56.80 It says there, "And it came to pass, 00:05:56.83\00:06:00.23 when the priests came out of the holy place, 00:06:00.26\00:06:03.59 that the cloud filled the house of the Lord, 00:06:03.62\00:06:07.66 so that the priests could not 00:06:07.69\00:06:09.30 continue ministering because of the cloud, 00:06:09.33\00:06:12.53 for the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord." 00:06:12.56\00:06:17.67 And so both in the tabernacle in the wilderness 00:06:17.70\00:06:20.05 and in Solomon's temple, 00:06:20.08\00:06:21.83 the glory of God entered the temple. 00:06:21.86\00:06:26.36 But then, we notice that the history of Israel, 00:06:26.39\00:06:30.37 from the time that the tabernacle was established 00:06:30.40\00:06:33.27 till the time of the Babylonian captivity, 00:06:33.30\00:06:36.04 was the history of one rebellion after another. 00:06:36.07\00:06:40.03 They did not live up to their end of the bargain. 00:06:40.06\00:06:43.17 They did not obey God's voice. 00:06:43.20\00:06:45.22 They did not keep God's covenant. 00:06:45.25\00:06:48.38 It is one unfaithfulness after another 00:06:48.41\00:06:51.07 in the history of Israel. 00:06:51.10\00:06:52.51 Let's read about that in 2 Chronicles 36:14-16. 00:06:52.54\00:06:58.70 2 Chronicles 36:14-16. 00:06:58.73\00:07:03.40 By the way, this rebellion took place 00:07:03.43\00:07:06.12 during a period of approximately 800 years from the time 00:07:06.15\00:07:10.21 that they were established as a theocracy at Mount Sinai 00:07:10.24\00:07:14.29 and finally when they went into captivity. 00:07:14.32\00:07:17.12 It says there in 2 Chronicles 36, 00:07:17.15\00:07:19.64 "Moreover, all the leaders of the priests 00:07:19.67\00:07:23.95 and the people transgressed more and more, 00:07:23.98\00:07:28.45 according to all" now I want you to notice 00:07:28.48\00:07:31.01 this very important word, "according to all 00:07:31.04\00:07:33.73 the abominations of the nations, 00:07:33.76\00:07:36.88 and defiled the house of the Lord 00:07:36.91\00:07:39.08 which He had consecrated in Jerusalem. 00:07:39.11\00:07:42.33 And the Lord God of their fathers 00:07:42.36\00:07:44.23 sent warnings to them by His messengers, 00:07:44.26\00:07:47.19 rising up early and sending them, 00:07:47.22\00:07:49.72 because He had compassion 00:07:49.75\00:07:51.12 on His people and on His dwelling place. 00:07:51.15\00:07:54.35 But they mocked the messengers of God, 00:07:54.38\00:07:56.95 despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets, 00:07:56.98\00:08:01.10 until the wrath of the Lord arose against His people, 00:08:01.13\00:08:05.24 till there was no remedy." 00:08:05.27\00:08:08.37 I want you to notice that key word, "abominations," 00:08:08.40\00:08:11.49 which we're going to read in a few moments, 00:08:11.52\00:08:13.54 some other texts that use that critically important word 00:08:13.57\00:08:17.55 which later on is used in the Gospel of Matthew. 00:08:17.58\00:08:21.55 In fact, things got so bad in Israel that we're told 00:08:21.58\00:08:26.14 that God called His own people a harlot. 00:08:26.17\00:08:30.10 Notice Ezekiel 16 and we're going to read 3 verses 00:08:30.13\00:08:34.07 not in succession but 3 verses in Chapter 16. 00:08:34.10\00:08:37.83 Verse 15, verse 22 and verse 30. 00:08:37.86\00:08:41.15 I want you to notice here that 00:08:41.18\00:08:42.55 God is addressing His professed people. 00:08:42.58\00:08:45.37 He's not speaking to the Philistines, 00:08:45.40\00:08:46.94 He's not speaking to the Babylonians, 00:08:46.97\00:08:49.40 He's not speaking to the worldly, so to speak, 00:08:49.43\00:08:52.48 He's speaking to His own people 00:08:52.51\00:08:54.71 and He is calling them a harlot, because of their abominations. 00:08:54.74\00:08:59.34 Notice Ezekiel 16:15. 00:08:59.37\00:09:04.01 God is speaking about Israel and says, 00:09:04.04\00:09:05.77 "But you trusted in your own beauty, 00:09:05.80\00:09:08.41 played the harlot because of your fame, 00:09:08.44\00:09:11.96 and poured out your harlotry on everyone passing by 00:09:11.99\00:09:15.54 who would have it. 00:09:15.57\00:09:16.94 And in all your," now here comes the key word again, 00:09:16.97\00:09:19.57 "and in all your abominations and acts of harlotry 00:09:19.60\00:09:25.37 you did not remember the days of your youth," 00:09:25.40\00:09:27.91 that is when she formed the covenant. 00:09:27.94\00:09:30.19 "When you were naked and bare, struggling in your blood." 00:09:30.22\00:09:33.20 In other words, when the nation was about to be born, 00:09:33.23\00:09:35.63 when they left Mount Sinai. 00:09:35.66\00:09:37.63 Verse 30. "'How degenerate is your heart!' 00:09:37.66\00:09:41.54 says the Lord God, 'seeing you do all these things, 00:09:41.57\00:09:45.94 the deeds of a brazen harlot.'" 00:09:45.97\00:09:50.21 This is amazing language, God calling His own people a harlot 00:09:50.24\00:09:54.02 because of the abominations that they were committing. 00:09:54.05\00:09:57.72 Notice a little bit earlier in the chapter, 00:09:57.75\00:09:59.86 in Ezekiel Chapter 16:2, once again our key word. 00:09:59.89\00:10:05.77 God is speaking to the prophet Ezekiel 00:10:05.80\00:10:07.79 and He says, "'Son of man, cause Jerusalem to know," her what? 00:10:07.82\00:10:13.83 "To know her abominations." 00:10:13.86\00:10:16.66 Time and again, in Ezekiel and in Jeremiah, 00:10:16.69\00:10:20.18 we find this key word abominations 00:10:20.21\00:10:23.64 which Israel was committing 00:10:23.67\00:10:25.68 against the Lord as a brazen harlot. 00:10:25.71\00:10:29.73 And so God decided that He was going to come 00:10:29.76\00:10:31.91 in judgment upon Israel. 00:10:31.94\00:10:33.59 He was going to take them into captivity. 00:10:33.62\00:10:36.23 And so it was that according to Ezekiel 1:4, 00:10:36.26\00:10:40.24 God came from the north in His chariot 00:10:40.27\00:10:43.06 to the sanctuary to judge Israel. 00:10:43.09\00:10:45.81 In fact, let's read about that in Ezekiel 1:4. 00:10:45.84\00:10:50.89 Here Ezekiel sees God coming to the Jerusalem temple 00:10:50.92\00:10:54.09 because He is going to judge His apostate people 00:10:54.12\00:10:57.35 who are committing these abominations. 00:10:57.38\00:10:59.98 It says there, "Then I looked, and behold, 00:11:00.01\00:11:03.34 a whirlwind was coming out of the north, 00:11:03.37\00:11:07.53 and a great cloud with a raging fire engulfing itself. 00:11:07.56\00:11:12.46 And brightness was all around it, 00:11:12.49\00:11:14.82 radiating out of the midst like the color of amber, 00:11:14.85\00:11:18.38 out of the midst of the fire." 00:11:18.41\00:11:20.63 If you continue reading, you'll see that this chariot 00:11:20.66\00:11:22.84 is coming from the north, the place of God's throne 00:11:22.87\00:11:25.49 and it's coming to earth, to the Jerusalem temple 00:11:25.52\00:11:28.79 to perform a work of judgment among God's people 00:11:28.82\00:11:32.58 for the abominations that they are committing. 00:11:32.61\00:11:36.28 Now let's read about that great abomination 00:11:36.31\00:11:41.16 that was being committed 00:11:41.19\00:11:42.65 in the city of God's professed people. 00:11:42.68\00:11:45.67 Ezekiel 8:16, 17. Ezekiel 8:16, 17. 00:11:45.70\00:11:52.95 And by the way, I want to underline that 00:11:52.98\00:11:54.81 this is happening among those who profess to be God's people. 00:11:54.84\00:11:58.51 This is not happening among the secular people, 00:11:58.54\00:12:01.21 the worldly people, this is happening 00:12:01.24\00:12:03.93 among those who claim to serve the true God, remember that. 00:12:03.96\00:12:07.06 When we come back to Matthew 24, 00:12:07.09\00:12:09.22 we'll study it more extensively. 00:12:09.25\00:12:11.73 It says there in Ezekiel 8:16, "So He brought me 00:12:11.76\00:12:16.83 into the inner court of the Lord's house, 00:12:16.86\00:12:18.41 and there, at the door of the temple of the Lord, 00:12:18.44\00:12:24.09 between the porch and the altar, were about twenty-five men 00:12:24.12\00:12:29.60 with their backs toward the temple of the Lord 00:12:29.63\00:12:33.50 and their faces toward the east, 00:12:33.53\00:12:35.88 and they were worshiping the sun toward the east." 00:12:35.91\00:12:40.11 Notice that God's own people, 00:12:40.14\00:12:41.67 instead of worshiping the creator, 00:12:41.70\00:12:43.39 were worshiping the sun according to this. 00:12:43.42\00:12:46.27 Notice verse 17, "Then He said to me, 00:12:46.30\00:12:49.48 'Have you seen this, O son of man? 00:12:49.51\00:12:52.94 Is it a trivial thing for the house of Judah 00:12:52.97\00:12:55.83 to commit the,'" here it is again, 00:12:55.86\00:12:57.97 "'the abominations which they commit here? 00:12:58.00\00:13:01.47 For they have filled the land with violence, 00:13:01.50\00:13:04.53 then they have returned to provoke Me to anger. 00:13:04.56\00:13:07.37 Indeed they put the branch to their nose. 00:13:07.40\00:13:10.41 Therefore I also will act in fury. 00:13:10.44\00:13:13.69 My eye will not spare nor will I have pity, 00:13:13.72\00:13:17.98 and though they cry in My ears with a loud voice, 00:13:18.01\00:13:21.34 I will not hear them.'" 00:13:21.37\00:13:25.09 What was the great abomination that was being committed 00:13:25.12\00:13:27.57 in the city of Jerusalem? 00:13:27.60\00:13:29.61 The worship of the sun. 00:13:29.64\00:13:31.28 I want you to remember this 00:13:31.31\00:13:32.68 because we're going to come back to it later. 00:13:32.71\00:13:34.81 They were not only worshiping the sun, 00:13:34.84\00:13:37.07 they were also trampling upon God's holy Sabbath. 00:13:37.10\00:13:40.54 And that led them to the captivity 00:13:40.57\00:13:43.09 that God is talking about here. 00:13:43.12\00:13:45.17 Now I want to make a couple of references only, 00:13:45.20\00:13:47.80 I'm not going to read the verses, 00:13:47.83\00:13:49.20 but in Jeremiah 5:31, 00:13:49.23\00:13:51.47 we're told that the rulers ruled by their own will, 00:13:51.50\00:13:55.72 the priests did as they wished and God's people wanted it so. 00:13:55.75\00:14:01.16 In other words, the priests led them down the wrong road 00:14:01.19\00:14:04.88 but that's what the people wanted. 00:14:04.91\00:14:07.07 And so God said, "Because of these abominations 00:14:07.10\00:14:09.65 that are being committed in My own house, 00:14:09.68\00:14:12.70 I am going to come from the four angles of the earth 00:14:12.73\00:14:17.39 to destroy this city and this temple." 00:14:17.42\00:14:20.91 And you can read in Ezekiel 7:1, 2, 00:14:20.94\00:14:24.16 where we're told that the end, 00:14:24.19\00:14:26.41 the end is coming upon the four corners of the earth. 00:14:26.44\00:14:32.24 But before God could destroy the Holy City, 00:14:32.27\00:14:35.29 He needed to perform a work of separation. 00:14:35.32\00:14:39.14 Because, you see, not everybody in the city 00:14:39.17\00:14:41.30 was committing the abominations that God was speaking about. 00:14:41.33\00:14:45.68 There was a small remnant 00:14:45.71\00:14:47.50 that was faithful to God within the city 00:14:47.53\00:14:50.48 and it was necessary to mark those individuals 00:14:50.51\00:14:53.60 so that when the destruction would come, 00:14:53.63\00:14:55.78 they would not be destroyed with the impenitent. 00:14:55.81\00:14:59.29 So I want you to notice that 00:14:59.32\00:15:00.69 when Jerusalem is about to be destroyed, 00:15:00.72\00:15:02.70 there's a small remnant that is going to receive a mark 00:15:02.73\00:15:06.05 so that they are not destroyed in the general ruin of the city. 00:15:06.08\00:15:09.38 We find this in Ezekiel 9:1-6. 00:15:09.41\00:15:14.20 It's a rather extensive passage 00:15:14.23\00:15:15.97 but it has some very important details. 00:15:16.00\00:15:18.55 It says there, "Then He called out 00:15:18.58\00:15:21.76 in my hearing with a loud voice, saying, 00:15:21.79\00:15:24.76 'Let those who have charge over the city draw near, 00:15:24.79\00:15:28.78 each with a deadly weapon in his hand.' 00:15:28.81\00:15:31.75 And suddenly six men came from the direction of the upper gate, 00:15:31.78\00:15:35.24 which faces north, each with his battle-ax in his hand. 00:15:35.27\00:15:39.47 One man among them was clothed with linen," 00:15:39.50\00:15:42.20 by the way, this is Jesus Christ, 00:15:42.23\00:15:44.54 "and had a writer's inkhorn at his side. 00:15:44.57\00:15:47.97 They went in and stood beside the bronze altar. 00:15:48.00\00:15:51.32 Now the glory of the God of Israel had gone up 00:15:51.35\00:15:53.74 from the cherub, where it had been, 00:15:53.77\00:15:56.16 to the threshold of the temple. 00:15:56.19\00:15:58.43 And He called to the man clothed with linen, 00:15:58.46\00:16:01.08 who had the writer's inkhorn at his side, 00:16:01.11\00:16:04.27 and the Lord said to him, 'Go through the midst of the city, 00:16:04.30\00:16:08.92 through the midst of Jerusalem," this is among God's own people, 00:16:08.95\00:16:13.58 the wicked are not contemplated here. 00:16:13.61\00:16:15.95 The secular, the worldly are not coming into view. 00:16:15.98\00:16:19.60 So He says, "Go through the midst of the city, 00:16:19.63\00:16:22.34 through the midst of Jerusalem, 00:16:22.37\00:16:24.16 and put a mark on the foreheads", 00:16:24.19\00:16:26.85 remember this, "put a mark on the foreheads of the men 00:16:26.88\00:16:30.13 who sigh and cry over all the" what? 00:16:30.16\00:16:34.18 "The abominations that are done within it." 00:16:34.21\00:16:38.03 What was the problem with God's people? 00:16:38.06\00:16:40.22 They were committing what? Abominations. 00:16:40.25\00:16:43.74 And God says, these abominations 00:16:43.77\00:16:45.95 are going to lead to the destruction of the city. 00:16:45.98\00:16:49.37 And then notice what was going to happen 00:16:49.40\00:16:51.38 after the righteous were separated from the unrighteous. 00:16:51.41\00:16:55.33 Verse 5, "To the others He said in my hearing, 00:16:55.36\00:16:59.92 'Go after him through the city and kill", this sounds terrible, 00:16:59.95\00:17:06.55 "and kill, do not let your eye spare, nor have any pity. 00:17:06.58\00:17:12.77 Utterly slay old and young men, 00:17:12.80\00:17:15.58 maidens and little children and women, 00:17:15.61\00:17:18.85 but do not come near anyone on whom is the mark, 00:17:18.88\00:17:23.43 and begin at My sanctuary." 00:17:23.46\00:17:26.59 Notice, with the religious leaders. 00:17:26.62\00:17:28.78 "So they began with the elders who were before the temple. 00:17:28.81\00:17:32.61 Then He said to them, 'Defile the temple, 00:17:32.64\00:17:35.30 fill the courts with the slain. Go out!' 00:17:35.33\00:17:38.44 And they went out and killed in the city." 00:17:38.47\00:17:43.65 So the abominations led God to come in judgment 00:17:43.68\00:17:48.08 and to perform a work of separation 00:17:48.11\00:17:50.48 between those who were worshiping the sun 00:17:50.51\00:17:53.74 and those who were sighing and crying 00:17:53.77\00:17:56.37 because of the abominations 00:17:56.40\00:17:58.07 that were being committed in the city. 00:17:58.10\00:18:00.47 When this work of separation was finished, 00:18:00.50\00:18:03.58 we find that the Shekinah that had come into the temple 00:18:03.61\00:18:06.91 in the days of Solomon, now leaves the temple. 00:18:06.94\00:18:11.22 Notice Ezekiel 10:19. Ezekiel 10:19. 00:18:11.25\00:18:17.23 The moment of the departing of the Shekinah from the temple. 00:18:17.26\00:18:21.01 It says, by the way, this is the same glory 00:18:21.04\00:18:24.20 that came in Chapter 1 to judge. 00:18:24.23\00:18:26.73 In Chapter 9, the judgment takes place, 00:18:26.76\00:18:29.23 now in Chapter 10, the Shekinah is going to depart 00:18:29.26\00:18:32.70 because the work of separation is finished, 00:18:32.73\00:18:34.81 probation has closed 00:18:34.84\00:18:36.53 for the city of Jerusalem and for the temple. 00:18:36.56\00:18:38.73 So it says, "Then the glory of the Lord departed 00:18:38.76\00:18:41.28 from the threshold of the temple and stood over the cherubim. 00:18:41.31\00:18:45.43 And the cherubim lifted their wings 00:18:45.46\00:18:47.36 and mounted up from the earth in my sight. 00:18:47.39\00:18:50.60 When they went out, the wheels were beside them, 00:18:50.63\00:18:53.94 and they stood at the door of the east gate 00:18:53.97\00:18:57.68 of the Lord's house", by the way, 00:18:57.71\00:18:59.23 this is the very entrance of the sanctuary, to the east, 00:18:59.26\00:19:02.56 "and the glory of the God of Israel was above them." 00:19:02.59\00:19:07.39 So you notice the Shekinah is forsaking the temple, 00:19:07.42\00:19:10.66 it goes to the entrance of the temple, and then, 00:19:10.69\00:19:13.85 in Chapter 11:22, 23 we find that the Shekinah, 00:19:13.88\00:19:18.24 after it leaves the temple, it goes and rests 00:19:18.27\00:19:21.96 upon the Mount of Olives on the eastern slope of Jerusalem. 00:19:21.99\00:19:27.77 Notice, Ezekiel 11:22, 23. 00:19:27.80\00:19:32.35 And the Shekinah lingers there for a while 00:19:32.38\00:19:35.25 as if not wanting to leave. 00:19:35.28\00:19:37.65 Notice Ezekiel 11:22, 23. 00:19:37.68\00:19:42.04 "Then the cherubim lifted up their wings, 00:19:42.07\00:19:45.12 with the wheels beside them, 00:19:45.15\00:19:47.42 and the glory of the God of Israel was high above them 00:19:47.45\00:19:52.39 and the glory of the Lord went up from the midst of the city", 00:19:52.42\00:19:57.75 and now notice, "and stood on the mountain, 00:19:57.78\00:20:01.10 stood on the mountain." 00:20:01.13\00:20:02.50 Notice it didn't just fly off all of a sudden. 00:20:02.53\00:20:04.45 For a moment it stood on the mountain 00:20:04.48\00:20:07.59 "which is on the east side of the city." 00:20:07.62\00:20:10.28 In the book, The Prophets and Kings 00:20:10.31\00:20:12.61 were told that the Shekinah stood on the Mount of Olives 00:20:12.64\00:20:16.81 because it didn't want to leave. 00:20:16.84\00:20:18.21 It was saying, "I don't want to leave you, my people. 00:20:18.24\00:20:20.90 I want to stay here but your abominations 00:20:20.93\00:20:23.62 have made it impossible." 00:20:23.65\00:20:25.06 The separation had been made 00:20:25.09\00:20:26.98 between the righteous and the unrighteous. 00:20:27.01\00:20:28.99 And now the Shekinah was going to forsake the temple 00:20:29.02\00:20:32.72 and was going to leave God's people desolate. 00:20:32.75\00:20:37.44 And then, in consequence to this, 00:20:37.47\00:20:40.40 you have Nebuchadnezzar coming and besieging the city, 00:20:40.43\00:20:46.62 demolishing the walls, destroying the city, 00:20:46.65\00:20:51.28 and destroying the temple of the Lord in the year 586. 00:20:51.31\00:20:56.21 Now it's interesting to notice that when Nebuchadnezzar comes, 00:20:56.24\00:21:01.76 it's emphasized that he is coming 00:21:01.79\00:21:04.15 with his armies like eagles. 00:21:04.18\00:21:06.40 I want you to remember that because in Matthew Chapter 24, 00:21:06.43\00:21:09.54 we have a reference to eagles once again. 00:21:09.57\00:21:13.30 Notice Jeremiah 4:13. 00:21:13.33\00:21:17.03 Jeremiah 4:13. Remember the eagles. 00:21:17.06\00:21:20.33 It says there, "Behold", speaking about Nebuchadnezzar, 00:21:20.36\00:21:25.55 "behold, he shall come up like clouds 00:21:25.58\00:21:28.89 and his chariots like a whirlwind. 00:21:28.92\00:21:31.70 His horses are swifter than" what? "Than eagles. 00:21:31.73\00:21:36.27 Woe to us, for we are plundered!" 00:21:36.30\00:21:40.30 Notice Lamentations 4:19. 00:21:40.33\00:21:44.13 "Our pursuers were swifter than the eagles of the heavens. 00:21:44.16\00:21:48.92 They pursued us on the mountains 00:21:48.95\00:21:51.18 and lay in wait for us in the wilderness." 00:21:51.21\00:21:54.05 Once again, Nebuchadnezzar spoken of as coming with eagles. 00:21:54.08\00:21:58.74 Habakkuk 1:8 which is describing this event says, 00:21:58.77\00:22:03.47 speaking about Nebuchadnezzar and his armies, 00:22:03.50\00:22:05.76 "Their horses also are swifter than leopards, 00:22:05.79\00:22:09.52 and more fierce than evening wolves. 00:22:09.55\00:22:12.95 Their chargers charge ahead, their cavalry comes from afar, 00:22:12.98\00:22:17.94 they fly as the eagle that hastens to eat." 00:22:17.97\00:22:22.33 And, of course, we all know that in Daniel 7:4, 00:22:22.36\00:22:26.18 Babylon is represented as a lion with eagle's wings. 00:22:26.21\00:22:31.63 Notice Daniel 7:4. 00:22:31.66\00:22:34.07 It says, "The first was like a lion, and had eagle's wings." 00:22:34.10\00:22:40.31 And so Nebuchadnezzar comes like an eagle 00:22:40.34\00:22:44.04 with his armies to destroy the city. 00:22:44.07\00:22:46.74 And by the way, do you know that Jeremiah composed 00:22:46.77\00:22:50.10 the Book of Lamentations for the Jews to sing 00:22:50.13\00:22:54.12 as they were being taken captive to Babylon? 00:22:54.15\00:22:57.23 In fact, the Book of Lamentations, 00:22:57.26\00:22:58.84 you know what lamentation is, it means to cry out. 00:22:58.87\00:23:02.92 This book describes what the besieging 00:23:02.95\00:23:05.54 of the city was like. 00:23:05.57\00:23:06.94 It even says that mothers ate their children. 00:23:06.97\00:23:09.93 In fact, the Book of Lamentations 00:23:09.96\00:23:11.85 is written in what is known as "kinah" meter. 00:23:11.88\00:23:15.09 It's a poetic style that is used for funeral dirges. 00:23:15.12\00:23:19.46 In other words, it is a funeral type of poetic language 00:23:19.49\00:23:24.31 that has been used in the Book of Lamentations 00:23:24.34\00:23:26.99 because God's people had been destroyed, 00:23:27.02\00:23:29.79 they had been left desolate. 00:23:29.82\00:23:33.45 I want you to notice that when the city was besieged, 00:23:33.48\00:23:36.62 that there were three punishments 00:23:36.65\00:23:38.18 that came upon the city. 00:23:38.21\00:23:39.58 Notice Jeremiah 32:24, 25. Jeremiah 32:24, 25. 00:23:39.61\00:23:47.22 The three punishments are famine, sword and pestilence. 00:23:47.25\00:23:51.37 By the way, these are the very ones 00:23:51.40\00:23:52.77 that are mentioned also in Matthew Chapter 24. 00:23:52.80\00:23:55.87 It says there, "Look, the siege mounds! 00:23:55.90\00:23:59.74 They have come to the city to take it, 00:23:59.77\00:24:02.25 and the city has been given into the hand of the Chaldeans 00:24:02.28\00:24:06.01 who fight against it, 00:24:06.04\00:24:07.81 because of the sword and famine and pestilence." 00:24:07.84\00:24:14.39 Are those things mentioned in Matthew Chapter 24? 00:24:14.42\00:24:16.79 Absolutely. 00:24:16.82\00:24:18.24 "What You have spoken has happened, there you see it! 00:24:18.27\00:24:22.02 And You have said to me, O Lord God, 00:24:22.05\00:24:24.82 'Buy the field for money and take witnesses!' 00:24:24.85\00:24:27.61 Yet the city has been given into the hands of the Chaldeans." 00:24:27.64\00:24:34.41 And so God's people were taken captive to Babylon. 00:24:34.44\00:24:40.18 The city was destroyed. 00:24:40.21\00:24:42.04 The temple was destroyed, and God's people 00:24:42.07\00:24:46.14 were slain in the courts of the temple itself 00:24:46.17\00:24:49.22 and in the courts of the city as God had said. 00:24:49.25\00:24:53.91 I'd like to read from 2 Chronicles 36:17-21, 00:24:53.94\00:24:59.94 the description of the destruction 00:24:59.97\00:25:01.83 of the city and the temple. 00:25:01.86\00:25:03.66 2 Chronicles 36:17-21. 00:25:03.69\00:25:08.06 Do you remember that in Ezekiel we read 00:25:08.09\00:25:10.15 that God said don't spare woman, child, don't spare man? 00:25:10.18\00:25:14.18 Now notice how this was enforced by the Lord 00:25:14.21\00:25:17.85 when the city actually fell. 00:25:17.88\00:25:20.49 It says there, "Therefore He brought against them 00:25:20.52\00:25:23.76 the king of the Chaldeans, who killed their young men 00:25:23.79\00:25:27.46 with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, 00:25:27.49\00:25:30.64 and had no compassion on young man or virgin, 00:25:30.67\00:25:35.62 on the aged or the weak" very similar terminology 00:25:35.65\00:25:39.78 to what we read in Ezekiel. 00:25:39.81\00:25:41.69 "He gave them all into his hand. 00:25:41.72\00:25:44.11 And all the articles from the house of the Lord, 00:25:44.14\00:25:46.35 great and small, the treasures of the house of the Lord, 00:25:46.38\00:25:49.32 and the treasures of the king, and of his leaders, 00:25:49.35\00:25:52.05 all these he took to Babylon. 00:25:52.08\00:25:54.61 Then they burned the house of God, 00:25:54.64\00:25:56.61 broke down the wall of Jerusalem, 00:25:56.64\00:25:58.66 and burned all its palaces with fire, 00:25:58.69\00:26:00.87 and destroyed all its precious possessions. 00:26:00.90\00:26:03.51 And those who escaped from the sword, 00:26:03.54\00:26:05.30 he carried away to Babylon where they became servants to him 00:26:05.33\00:26:09.36 and his sons until the rule of the kingdom of Persia, 00:26:09.39\00:26:12.75 to fulfill the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah, 00:26:12.78\00:26:16.02 until the land had enjoyed her Sabbaths, 00:26:16.05\00:26:18.31 as long as she lay desolate 00:26:18.34\00:26:20.12 she kept Sabbath, to fulfill" how long? 00:26:20.15\00:26:23.29 "To fulfill seventy years." 00:26:23.32\00:26:26.64 By the way, incidentally, 00:26:26.67\00:26:28.48 if you read the Book of Jeremiah, 00:26:28.51\00:26:30.61 you're going to discover something very interesting. 00:26:30.64\00:26:33.13 Jeremiah time and again emphasizes 00:26:33.16\00:26:35.81 that when the city was being besieged by Nebuchadnezzar, 00:26:35.84\00:26:39.17 false prophets arose saying, 00:26:39.20\00:26:42.06 "This city will never fall. This is God's city. 00:26:42.09\00:26:45.32 Don't be concerned with the words that Jeremiah 00:26:45.35\00:26:48.67 and the other prophets are talking about. 00:26:48.70\00:26:50.56 God is with us." 00:26:50.59\00:26:52.34 In other words, time and again in Jeremiah, 00:26:52.37\00:26:54.87 Jeremiah speaks about the false prophets 00:26:54.90\00:26:57.67 trying to counteract the word of God's true prophets. 00:26:57.70\00:27:03.18 And then, of course, the city was destroyed. 00:27:03.21\00:27:06.99 It's interesting to notice then, 00:27:07.02\00:27:08.75 that the abominations of Jerusalem led to its what? 00:27:08.78\00:27:13.84 Led to its desolation. 00:27:13.87\00:27:15.80 In other words, the abominations led to the desolation. 00:27:15.83\00:27:19.79 In fact, notice Jeremiah Chapter 25 00:27:19.82\00:27:22.88 and we'll read three verses here. 00:27:22.91\00:27:24.35 Jeremiah 25, verses 9, 11 and 18. 00:27:24.38\00:27:28.77 Jeremiah 25:9, 11, 18. 00:27:28.80\00:27:32.80 It says there, and I'm going to begin actually, in verse 8, 00:27:32.83\00:27:36.79 "Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, 00:27:36.82\00:27:39.33 'Because you have not heard My words, 00:27:39.36\00:27:42.32 behold, I will send and take all the families of the north,' 00:27:42.35\00:27:46.46 says the Lord, 00:27:46.49\00:27:47.86 'and Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, 00:27:47.89\00:27:50.58 My servant and will bring them 00:27:50.61\00:27:53.10 against this land, against its inhabitants, 00:27:53.13\00:27:56.70 and against these nations all around, 00:27:56.73\00:27:59.25 and will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, 00:27:59.28\00:28:03.37 a hissing and perpetual'", what? 00:28:03.40\00:28:06.67 There's the word, "'desolations.'" 00:28:06.70\00:28:08.92 Verse 11, "And this whole land shall be a" what? 00:28:08.95\00:28:13.96 "Desolation and an astonishment, and these nations shall serve 00:28:13.99\00:28:18.53 the king of Babylon seventy years." 00:28:18.56\00:28:21.13 Verse 18, "Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, 00:28:21.16\00:28:24.46 its kings and its princes, to make them a", 00:28:24.49\00:28:27.79 there's the key word again, what? 00:28:27.82\00:28:29.26 "Desolation, an astonishment, 00:28:29.29\00:28:31.77 a hissing and a curse, as it is this day." 00:28:31.80\00:28:35.80 Are you understanding what the abomination of desolation is? 00:28:35.83\00:28:38.82 The abominations in Jerusalem, 00:28:38.85\00:28:41.74 the greatest of which was worshiping the sun 00:28:41.77\00:28:44.63 is what eventually led to the desolation of the city. 00:28:44.66\00:28:48.71 In other words, national apostasy led to national what? 00:28:48.74\00:28:54.22 National ruin. 00:28:54.25\00:28:55.65 And what was the great sin, the great abomination? 00:28:55.68\00:28:59.02 It was the fact that they were worshiping the sun. 00:28:59.05\00:29:02.18 By the way, do you know that God said 00:29:02.21\00:29:04.02 that the reason why they went into captivity 00:29:04.05\00:29:05.77 is because they were not keeping the Sabbath? 00:29:05.80\00:29:08.38 They were worshipping the sun instead of keeping the Sabbath. 00:29:08.41\00:29:11.31 Notice Jeremiah 17:24, 25 and we'll read also verse 27. 00:29:11.34\00:29:17.42 Jeremiah 17:24, 25 and we'll read also verse 27. 00:29:17.45\00:29:23.30 It says there in verse 24 00:29:23.33\00:29:26.40 "'And it shall be, if you heed me carefully, 00:29:26.43\00:29:30.11 says the Lord, to bring no burden 00:29:30.14\00:29:32.82 through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, 00:29:32.85\00:29:36.00 but hallow the Sabbath day, to do no work in it. 00:29:36.03\00:29:40.70 Verse 25, "Then shall enter the gates of this city 00:29:40.73\00:29:45.42 kings and princes sitting on the throne of David, 00:29:45.45\00:29:50.06 riding in chariots and on horses, 00:29:50.09\00:29:52.80 they and their princes, accompanied by the men of Judah, 00:29:52.83\00:29:56.37 and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, 00:29:56.40\00:29:58.23 and this city shall remain," what? "Forever." 00:29:58.26\00:30:02.28 In other words, keep my Sabbath. 00:30:02.31\00:30:04.40 And the city will remain forever. 00:30:04.43\00:30:06.30 What happens if they don't keep the Sabbath? 00:30:06.33\00:30:08.55 Notice verse 27. 00:30:08.58\00:30:10.31 "But if you will not heed Me to hallow the Sabbath day, 00:30:10.34\00:30:15.40 such as not carrying a burden, 00:30:15.43\00:30:18.32 when entering the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, 00:30:18.35\00:30:22.09 then I will kindle a fire in its gates, 00:30:22.12\00:30:25.74 and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, 00:30:25.77\00:30:28.73 and it shall not be quenched." 00:30:28.76\00:30:32.76 Let me ask you, do you think that 00:30:32.79\00:30:34.16 those who were sighing and crying 00:30:34.19\00:30:35.56 over the abominations were keeping the Sabbath? 00:30:35.59\00:30:38.31 Of course. 00:30:38.34\00:30:39.71 How about those people who were not sighing and crying? 00:30:39.74\00:30:42.70 What were they worshipping? 00:30:42.73\00:30:44.38 They were worshipping what? The sun. 00:30:44.41\00:30:46.78 I want you to remember the Sabbath issue, 00:30:46.81\00:30:49.22 because in Matthew Chapter 24, 00:30:49.25\00:30:51.66 Jesus says something very interesting. 00:30:51.69\00:30:53.86 He says "Pray that your flight might not be in winter or," 00:30:53.89\00:30:59.01 what? "Or on the Sabbath." 00:30:59.04\00:31:01.04 In other words, those who were going to flee 00:31:01.07\00:31:03.22 were going to be what? 00:31:03.25\00:31:04.68 Sabbath keepers just like those who sighed and cried 00:31:04.71\00:31:09.31 over the abominations in the city. 00:31:09.34\00:31:11.77 Now you're saying what does this have to do with Matthew 24? 00:31:11.80\00:31:15.83 We have to have this background 00:31:15.86\00:31:17.23 or else we'll not be able to understand 00:31:17.26\00:31:19.78 the second destruction of Jerusalem in the year 70. 00:31:19.81\00:31:23.78 Now Israel went captive to Babylon for 70 years. 00:31:23.81\00:31:27.80 But God promised that after 70 years, 00:31:27.83\00:31:30.84 he was going to take them to their land again 00:31:30.87\00:31:33.40 and they were going to rebuild the city. 00:31:33.43\00:31:35.45 They were going to rebuild the walls 00:31:35.48\00:31:37.45 and they were going to rebuild the sanctuary. 00:31:37.48\00:31:39.69 And God was going to give them another chance. 00:31:39.72\00:31:44.35 Notice what we find in Daniel Chapter 9:1, 2. 00:31:44.38\00:31:47.41 Here Daniel is studying the prophecy of the 70 years. 00:31:47.44\00:31:50.40 He wants to know whether God is gonna fulfill His promise 00:31:50.43\00:31:53.17 of releasing Israel to go back to their land 00:31:53.20\00:31:56.25 after the 70-year captivity. 00:31:56.28\00:31:58.30 It says there in Daniel 9:1, 2, "In the first year of Darius 00:31:58.33\00:32:03.22 the son of Ahasuerus, of the lineage of the Medes, 00:32:03.25\00:32:07.03 who was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans, 00:32:07.06\00:32:10.11 in the first year of his reign, I Daniel understood 00:32:10.14\00:32:14.21 by the books the number of the years specified 00:32:14.24\00:32:17.56 by the word of the Lord through Jeremiah the prophet, 00:32:17.59\00:32:20.29 that He would accomplish 70 years in the desolations, 00:32:20.32\00:32:24.87 in the desolations of Jerusalem." 00:32:24.90\00:32:27.86 So long was the desolation of Jerusalem gonna last? 00:32:27.89\00:32:30.90 It was not gonna be permanent. 00:32:30.93\00:32:32.32 It was going to last for a period of 70 years. 00:32:32.35\00:32:35.71 Then they would return to the city. 00:32:35.74\00:32:37.56 They would rebuild it. 00:32:37.59\00:32:38.96 And they would reestablish the sanctuary service. 00:32:38.99\00:32:43.63 By the way, this is mentioned by Daniel 00:32:43.66\00:32:47.13 a little later on in the same chapter, Chapter 9. 00:32:47.16\00:32:50.66 Go with me to Chapter 9:25-27. Daniel 9:25-27. 00:32:50.69\00:32:57.50 This is the famous prophecy of the 70 weeks 00:32:57.53\00:33:00.12 and you know we don't have a lot of time 00:33:00.15\00:33:02.01 to go into all of the details of the prophecy of the 70 weeks. 00:33:02.04\00:33:05.35 But basically, it speaks about the going forth of the Lord 00:33:05.38\00:33:08.57 to restore and build Jerusalem after it was destroyed 00:33:08.60\00:33:11.82 by Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonians 00:33:11.85\00:33:13.94 and then it speaks about 70 weeks 00:33:13.97\00:33:15.76 being allotted for the Hebrew nation. 00:33:15.79\00:33:18.26 In other words, God is giving them another opportunity. 00:33:18.29\00:33:21.04 He is giving them another chance to repent 00:33:21.07\00:33:23.86 and to obey the covenant and to listen to His voice. 00:33:23.89\00:33:27.49 Notice Daniel 9:25, "Know therefore and understand 00:33:27.52\00:33:32.97 that from the going forth of the command to restore 00:33:33.00\00:33:35.39 and build Jerusalem," so it must have been in ruins 00:33:35.42\00:33:38.39 if they needed to restore and build it? 00:33:38.42\00:33:39.99 Of course. Nebuchadnezzar had destroyed it. 00:33:40.02\00:33:42.63 "Until Messiah, the Prince, 00:33:42.66\00:33:44.53 there shall be seven weeks, and sixty-two weeks." 00:33:44.56\00:33:47.17 That's by the way 69 weeks, which is a period of how long? 00:33:47.20\00:33:51.16 483 years that leads to the last week 00:33:51.19\00:33:55.70 of the prophecy of the 70 weeks. 00:33:55.73\00:33:58.05 It says, "The street shall be built again, 00:33:58.08\00:33:59.94 and the wall, even in troublous times." 00:33:59.97\00:34:02.01 So was there some rebuilding that had to take place 00:34:02.04\00:34:05.06 once the word was given to restore and build Jerusalem? 00:34:05.09\00:34:07.87 Verse 26, After the 62 weeks, Messiah shall be cut off." 00:34:07.90\00:34:13.73 What was gonna happen to the Messiah? 00:34:13.76\00:34:15.25 He was gonna be cutoff. 00:34:15.28\00:34:16.65 By the way, the Messiah means 00:34:16.68\00:34:18.09 the anointed one shall be cutoff. 00:34:18.12\00:34:20.52 "But not for himself." And now notice. 00:34:20.55\00:34:22.90 Was Jerusalem going 00:34:22.93\00:34:24.30 to be destroyed again in this prophecy? 00:34:24.33\00:34:27.58 Absolutely, because it says, "And after the 62 weeks, 00:34:27.61\00:34:30.73 Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself, 00:34:30.76\00:34:33.41 and the people of the prince who is to come 00:34:33.44\00:34:36.55 shall destroy the city and the sanctuary." 00:34:36.58\00:34:40.35 So after this period of 70 weeks, 00:34:40.38\00:34:42.96 was there going to be a second destruction 00:34:42.99\00:34:45.74 of Jerusalem by a prince who was to come? 00:34:45.77\00:34:48.71 Absolutely. And then notice the key terminology. 00:34:48.74\00:34:52.17 It says, "The end of it," that is the end of the city, 00:34:52.20\00:34:55.84 "shall be with a flood, till the end of the" 00:34:55.87\00:34:59.66 what? "Of the war." 00:34:59.69\00:35:02.53 What's the key word there? "Desolations are determined. 00:35:02.56\00:35:06.76 Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week. 00:35:06.79\00:35:09.68 But in the middle of the week, 00:35:09.71\00:35:11.08 He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering." 00:35:11.11\00:35:14.40 And now notice, "And on the wing of," 00:35:14.43\00:35:17.56 What's the word there? 00:35:17.59\00:35:18.96 "Of abomination shall be one who makes, 00:35:18.99\00:35:23.00 " there it is again," desolate, even until the consummation, 00:35:23.03\00:35:26.76 which is determined is poured out upon the," 00:35:26.79\00:35:31.33 what? "Upon the desolate." 00:35:31.36\00:35:33.17 Question then, was Jerusalem going to have 00:35:33.20\00:35:36.09 a second destruction because of abominations? 00:35:36.12\00:35:39.35 Was there gonna be another desolation 00:35:39.38\00:35:41.68 by the prince who was to come? 00:35:41.71\00:35:43.96 Absolutely. 00:35:43.99\00:35:45.36 The prophecy of the 70 weeks 00:35:45.39\00:35:46.76 contemplates two destructions of Jerusalem 00:35:46.79\00:35:48.82 because Jerusalem has to be rebuilt and restored. 00:35:48.85\00:35:52.07 That means that it was destroyed 00:35:52.10\00:35:54.66 and also at the end of the prophecy 00:35:54.69\00:35:56.37 it says that when the Messiah would come, 00:35:56.40\00:35:58.28 after He should come, the city once again 00:35:58.31\00:36:01.03 would be desolate because of its what? 00:36:01.06\00:36:03.52 Because of its abominations. 00:36:03.55\00:36:05.61 Now after the captivity, 00:36:05.64\00:36:08.65 the city and the temple were rebuilt. 00:36:08.68\00:36:11.78 Notice what we find in 2 Chronicles 36:22, 23. 00:36:11.81\00:36:17.12 2 Chronicles 36:22, 23. 00:36:17.15\00:36:21.23 Here is the order to restore 00:36:21.26\00:36:24.30 the sanctuary service in Jerusalem. 00:36:24.33\00:36:26.53 It says, "Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, 00:36:26.56\00:36:30.07 that the word of the Lord 00:36:30.10\00:36:31.47 by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, 00:36:31.50\00:36:34.00 the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, 00:36:34.03\00:36:38.73 so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, 00:36:38.76\00:36:41.98 and also put it in writing, saying, 00:36:42.01\00:36:44.25 Thus says Cyrus king of Persia, 00:36:44.28\00:36:47.49 All the kingdoms of the earth 00:36:47.52\00:36:49.09 the Lord God of heaven has given me. 00:36:49.12\00:36:51.17 And He has commanded me to build Him a house at Jerusalem." 00:36:51.20\00:36:54.29 So must the house have been destroyed 00:36:54.32\00:36:55.87 if God commanded him to build a house? 00:36:55.90\00:36:57.53 Of course. 00:36:57.56\00:36:58.93 "And He has commanded me to build Him a house 00:36:58.96\00:37:00.79 at Jerusalem which is in Judah. 00:37:00.82\00:37:03.21 Who is among you of all His people? 00:37:03.24\00:37:06.25 May the Lord his God be with him, and let him" what? 00:37:06.28\00:37:10.12 "And let him go up. 00:37:10.15\00:37:11.52 And so the work of construction began. 00:37:11.55\00:37:13.72 And to make a long story short, 00:37:13.75\00:37:15.39 the temple was finished in the year 515 BC. 00:37:15.42\00:37:20.84 They went back in the year 536, 00:37:20.87\00:37:23.03 but the temple was finished in the year 515 BC. 00:37:23.06\00:37:27.44 And by the way, some of the people 00:37:27.47\00:37:28.94 that saw this second temple actually cried when they saw it. 00:37:28.97\00:37:33.62 Because there was nothing like Solomon's Temple. 00:37:33.65\00:37:35.78 It was far inferior. 00:37:35.81\00:37:37.54 In fact, there was no evidence 00:37:37.57\00:37:38.94 that the Shekinah even came into this temple. 00:37:38.97\00:37:41.51 Notice how this is described in the Book of Haggai 2:6-9. 00:37:41.54\00:37:47.46 Haggai 2:6-9. 00:37:47.49\00:37:50.39 The temple here has been finished 00:37:50.42\00:37:54.79 and God is promising something 00:37:54.82\00:37:57.87 which the Jews are still trying to understand today. 00:37:57.90\00:38:00.46 It says there in Haggai 2:6, 00:38:00.49\00:38:03.07 "For thus says the Lord of hosts. 00:38:03.10\00:38:05.98 Once more, it is a little while, 00:38:06.01\00:38:09.50 I will shake heaven and earth, the sea and dry land, 00:38:09.53\00:38:13.03 and I will shake all nations, and they shall come." 00:38:13.06\00:38:18.28 Notice and they shall come to the what? 00:38:18.31\00:38:21.09 "To the desire of all nations." 00:38:21.12\00:38:22.86 It also could be translated the desire of ages. 00:38:22.89\00:38:26.10 "And I will fill" notice "I will fill this temple with" 00:38:26.13\00:38:30.41 what? "With glory." 00:38:30.44\00:38:32.17 This is that second temple built after the captivity. 00:38:32.20\00:38:35.19 He says, "'I will fill this temple with glory' 00:38:35.22\00:38:38.36 says the Lord of hosts. 00:38:38.39\00:38:39.78 'The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine,' 00:38:39.81\00:38:41.74 says the Lord of hosts. 00:38:41.77\00:38:43.16 'The glory of this latter temple shall be greater 00:38:43.19\00:38:46.60 than the former,' says the Lord of hosts. 00:38:46.63\00:38:48.77 'And in this place I will give peace,' 00:38:48.80\00:38:51.36 says the Lord of hosts." 00:38:51.39\00:38:53.97 The Jews are still trying to understand 00:38:54.00\00:38:56.50 when that was fulfilled because the second temple 00:38:56.53\00:39:00.07 was destroyed and it never reached 00:39:00.10\00:39:01.79 the glory of the first temple. 00:39:01.82\00:39:04.07 Solomon's Temple, so called, 00:39:04.10\00:39:05.96 was far surpassed this temple in glory. 00:39:05.99\00:39:08.43 And yet, God was saying that this temple 00:39:08.46\00:39:11.11 which was built after the captivity 00:39:11.14\00:39:12.97 would far surpass that first temple in glory 00:39:13.00\00:39:16.72 and that God would come into the temple with power and glory. 00:39:16.75\00:39:21.92 How are we to understand this? 00:39:21.95\00:39:23.49 Was this prophecy ever fulfilled? Absolutely. 00:39:23.52\00:39:28.20 Notice John 1:14. John 1:14. 00:39:28.23\00:39:34.33 Here the Shekinah enters the temple. 00:39:34.36\00:39:38.84 It says there, and you've read this verse many times before. 00:39:38.87\00:39:43.84 "And the Word became flesh." 00:39:43.87\00:39:48.11 Is this what the prophecy of the 70 weeks was pointing to? 00:39:48.14\00:39:51.54 The coming of the Messiah? Absolutely. 00:39:51.57\00:39:54.01 "The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, 00:39:54.04\00:39:57.78 and we beheld His," what? 00:39:57.81\00:40:00.00 "We beheld His glory, 00:40:00.03\00:40:02.50 the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, 00:40:02.53\00:40:06.00 full of grace and truth." 00:40:06.03\00:40:08.96 Is the presence of Jesus spoken off as glory? Yes. 00:40:11.42\00:40:15.81 Did Jesus walk in the courts of this second temple? Yes. 00:40:15.84\00:40:23.03 This is how this second temple was more glorious 00:40:23.06\00:40:26.56 than the first temple, which was destroyed. 00:40:26.59\00:40:29.62 And yet how did Israel respond to the Shekinah 00:40:29.65\00:40:33.23 that was in their midst? 00:40:33.26\00:40:34.93 He came to His own and His own received Him not. 00:40:34.96\00:40:40.46 They refused to hear His voice. 00:40:40.49\00:40:43.12 They refused to obey His covenant and therefore, 00:40:43.15\00:40:47.46 at the very end of His ministry, 00:40:47.49\00:40:49.69 the Shekinah comes into the temple for the last time. 00:40:49.72\00:40:54.15 Let's read about it in Luke 19:37, 38. 00:40:54.18\00:40:59.97 Luke 19:37, 38. 00:41:00.00\00:41:05.98 By the way, did the Shekinah enter the temple 00:41:06.01\00:41:09.78 in the days of Ezekiel right before Jerusalem was destroyed? 00:41:09.81\00:41:14.30 Yes, it departed the temple then, didn't it? 00:41:14.33\00:41:17.03 And where did it linger? On the Mount of Olives. 00:41:17.06\00:41:20.86 You see, this is gonna happen all over again 00:41:20.89\00:41:23.33 with Israel in its second opportunity. 00:41:23.36\00:41:26.16 Notice Luke 19:37, 38. 00:41:26.19\00:41:28.61 It says then, "As He was now drawing near, 00:41:28.64\00:41:31.78 the descent of the Mount of Olives, 00:41:31.81\00:41:34.23 the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice 00:41:34.26\00:41:37.85 and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works 00:41:37.88\00:41:41.55 they had seen, saying 00:41:41.58\00:41:43.41 'Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord. 00:41:43.44\00:41:47.16 Peace in heaven and glory in the highest.'" 00:41:47.19\00:41:50.85 So He's coming down the Mount of Olives 00:41:50.88\00:41:54.66 and then He comes into the temple. 00:41:54.69\00:41:58.27 Notice Matthew 21:12, 13 00:41:58.30\00:42:01.33 which chronologically is at this very time. 00:42:01.36\00:42:04.50 You see, Luke is describing it in one way. 00:42:04.53\00:42:07.27 Here we find in Matthew 21 the description of Matthew. 00:42:07.30\00:42:12.20 Matthew 21:12, 13. 00:42:12.23\00:42:15.87 It says, "Then Jesus went into the," 00:42:15.90\00:42:20.37 what? That's important. 00:42:20.40\00:42:22.80 "Into the temple of God." 00:42:22.83\00:42:24.32 So when Jesus went into the temple, 00:42:24.35\00:42:26.03 was it still the temple of God? It was. 00:42:26.06\00:42:28.84 It says, "Then Jesus went into the temple of God 00:42:28.87\00:42:32.19 and drove out all those who bought and sold in the temple, 00:42:32.22\00:42:36.21 and overturned the tables of the moneychangers, 00:42:36.24\00:42:40.49 and the seats of those who sold doves. 00:42:40.52\00:42:43.38 And He said to them, "It is written," notice this. 00:42:43.41\00:42:46.85 "'My house,'" did He still claim 00:42:46.88\00:42:49.54 that this was His house? Absolutely. 00:42:49.57\00:42:51.69 "'My house shall be called the house of prayer,' 00:42:51.72\00:42:54.39 but you have made it a den of thieves." 00:42:54.42\00:42:56.36 So did the Shekinah come to the temple? 00:42:56.39\00:42:58.38 He most certainly did. 00:42:58.41\00:42:59.78 Did He cleanse the temple? He absolutely did? 00:42:59.81\00:43:03.52 And then, in the temple courts, 00:43:03.55\00:43:05.56 Jesus teaches several parables. 00:43:05.59\00:43:09.34 One of those parables is the parable of the fig tree, 00:43:09.37\00:43:11.79 which we're gonna study later on in this series. 00:43:11.82\00:43:14.65 You remember the story of the fig tree 00:43:14.68\00:43:16.05 Jesus goes looking for food on it? 00:43:16.08\00:43:19.04 And what was the problem with the fig tree? 00:43:19.07\00:43:21.89 It had no fruit. 00:43:21.92\00:43:23.49 What did the fig tree represent? 00:43:23.52\00:43:26.00 It represented the nation of Israel. 00:43:26.03\00:43:28.79 Everybody can tell you that 00:43:28.82\00:43:30.28 Israel is symbolized by a fig tree. 00:43:30.31\00:43:33.90 And yet, Jesus came looking for food 00:43:33.93\00:43:36.71 on that fig tree and He found none. 00:43:36.74\00:43:39.46 So what did Jesus do? 00:43:39.49\00:43:41.06 Notice Matthew 21:18, 19. 00:43:41.09\00:43:46.38 It says, "Now in the morning 00:43:46.41\00:43:47.78 as He returned to the city, He was hungry. 00:43:47.81\00:43:50.46 And seeing a fig tree by the road, 00:43:50.49\00:43:52.44 He came to it and found nothing on it but leaves, 00:43:52.47\00:43:55.37 and said to it, 'Let' notice this, 00:43:55.40\00:43:58.54 "'Let no fruit grow on you ever again.' 00:43:58.57\00:44:03.12 And immediately the fig tree," what? "Withered away." 00:44:03.15\00:44:07.12 Was He predicting what was gonna happen to the Hebrew nation? 00:44:07.15\00:44:10.49 He most certainly was. 00:44:10.52\00:44:12.26 And He was teaching this in the courts of the temple. 00:44:12.29\00:44:14.75 He was coming to judge in the temple 00:44:14.78\00:44:17.45 just like in the Old Testament. 00:44:17.48\00:44:19.00 He came down from the east, 00:44:19.03\00:44:20.62 down the slope of the Mount of Olives into the temple. 00:44:20.65\00:44:23.49 And now, He's gonna perform 00:44:23.52\00:44:24.94 a work of separation in the temple. 00:44:24.97\00:44:28.03 And then, of course, in the temple, 00:44:28.06\00:44:29.43 Jesus also tells that famous parable. 00:44:29.46\00:44:32.31 Matthew 21:33-43. 00:44:32.34\00:44:35.58 It's the parable of the vineyard workers. 00:44:35.61\00:44:38.35 It says there, "Here another parable. 00:44:38.38\00:44:40.51 There was a certain landowner, who planted a vineyard, 00:44:40.54\00:44:43.33 and set a hedge around it, 00:44:43.36\00:44:45.32 dug a winepress in it and built a tower. 00:44:45.35\00:44:47.96 And he leased it to vinedressers, 00:44:47.99\00:44:49.86 and went into a far country. 00:44:49.89\00:44:51.97 Now when vintage-time drew near, 00:44:52.00\00:44:54.14 he sent his servants to the vinedressers, 00:44:54.17\00:44:57.84 that they might receive its," what? "Its fruit. 00:44:57.87\00:45:01.18 And the vinedressers took his servants, 00:45:01.21\00:45:02.72 beat one, killed one, and stoned another." 00:45:02.75\00:45:05.04 Is this what they did with the servants 00:45:05.07\00:45:06.79 between the times of Moses and the Babylonian captivity? 00:45:06.82\00:45:10.05 What they did with their prophets and their messengers? 00:45:10.08\00:45:12.31 Absolutely. Verse 36, 00:45:12.34\00:45:14.61 "Again, he sent other servants." 00:45:14.64\00:45:16.01 See after the captivity, he sends more servants. 00:45:16.04\00:45:18.62 "More than the first, and they did likewise to them." 00:45:18.65\00:45:22.22 Now notice verse 37. 00:45:22.25\00:45:23.67 "Then last of all," notice it has a finality to it. 00:45:23.70\00:45:26.81 "Last of all, he sent his," what? 00:45:26.84\00:45:29.51 "His son to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.' 00:45:29.54\00:45:34.90 But when the vinedressers saw the son, 00:45:34.93\00:45:36.67 they said among themselves, 'This is the heir. 00:45:36.70\00:45:39.08 Come, let us kill him, and seize his inheritance.' 00:45:39.11\00:45:42.28 So they took him and cast him 00:45:42.31\00:45:44.10 out of the vineyard and killed him. 00:45:44.13\00:45:46.43 Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, 00:45:46.46\00:45:48.48 what will he do to those vinedressers? 00:45:48.51\00:45:51.23 They said to Him, 'He will destroy 00:45:51.26\00:45:53.55 those wicked men miserably.' 00:45:53.58\00:45:56.24 What was Jesus talking about? 00:45:56.27\00:45:58.38 He was talking about the nation 00:45:58.41\00:45:59.79 that had this second chance, the Hebrew nation. 00:45:59.82\00:46:03.33 "They said to him, 00:46:03.36\00:46:04.73 'He will destroy those wicked men miserably.' 00:46:04.76\00:46:07.21 And lease his vineyard to other vinedressers 00:46:07.24\00:46:09.51 who will render to him the fruits in their seasons. 00:46:09.54\00:46:12.01 Jesus said to them, 'Have you never read in the scriptures, 00:46:12.04\00:46:15.27 'The stone which the builders rejected 00:46:15.30\00:46:17.42 has become the chief cornerstone. 00:46:17.45\00:46:19.12 This was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?" 00:46:19.15\00:46:23.77 Now notice this. 00:46:23.80\00:46:25.17 "Therefore I say I to you, the kingdom of God will be," 00:46:25.20\00:46:29.49 what? "Will be taken from you, 00:46:29.52\00:46:32.02 and given to a nation bearing the fruits thereof." 00:46:32.05\00:46:36.85 Was there going to be 00:46:36.88\00:46:38.25 another rejection of the Hebrew theocracy? 00:46:38.28\00:46:41.00 Yes. Why? 00:46:41.03\00:46:42.51 Because they rejected whom? 00:46:42.54\00:46:44.76 Because they rejected Jesus, the Messiah, the one 00:46:44.79\00:46:48.66 who originally made the covenant with Him at Mount Sinai 00:46:48.69\00:46:52.10 who came down the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives 00:46:52.13\00:46:54.93 like in the days of Ezekiel, entered the temple 00:46:54.96\00:46:57.90 to give parables of judgment, was rejected in there. 00:46:57.93\00:47:03.37 And then I want you to notice 00:47:03.40\00:47:04.77 what He says when He leaves the temple. 00:47:04.80\00:47:06.95 Matthew 23:37, 38. 00:47:06.98\00:47:10.32 You see, he leaves the temple. 00:47:10.35\00:47:11.72 Just like the Shekinah in the days of Ezekiel. 00:47:11.75\00:47:14.65 It says in Matthew 23:37, Jesus is speaking. 00:47:14.68\00:47:19.12 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets 00:47:19.15\00:47:23.73 and stones those who are sent to her. 00:47:23.76\00:47:26.86 How often I wanted to gather your children together, 00:47:26.89\00:47:30.09 as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, 00:47:30.12\00:47:34.54 but you were not willing. 00:47:34.57\00:47:36.58 See." Now notice this. 00:47:36.61\00:47:38.60 "Your house is left to you," excuse me? "Desolate." 00:47:38.63\00:47:44.98 Is that a key word? 00:47:45.01\00:47:46.66 Was that found in relationship 00:47:46.69\00:47:48.39 to the first destruction of Jerusalem? Yes. 00:47:48.42\00:47:51.99 Was Jerusalem left desolate 00:47:52.02\00:47:53.88 because they rejected the Lord? Absolutely. 00:47:53.91\00:47:56.42 So Jesus--is the Shekinah departing the temple now? 00:47:56.45\00:47:59.17 Absolutely. Verse 39. 00:47:59.20\00:48:01.62 "For I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, 00:48:01.65\00:48:07.31 'Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.'" 00:48:07.34\00:48:10.13 And then interestingly enough, after Jesus leaves the temple, 00:48:10.16\00:48:13.36 He says, "Your house is left desolate." 00:48:13.39\00:48:16.23 Just like in the days of Ezekiel, 00:48:16.26\00:48:18.15 Jesus now goes and He sits on the Mount of Olives. 00:48:18.18\00:48:22.46 And He is going to linger there 00:48:23.76\00:48:25.49 and do you know what He's gonna talk about? 00:48:25.52\00:48:28.02 He's gonna talk about the destruction of Jerusalem. 00:48:28.05\00:48:33.59 Is this parallel to what we noticed in the Old Testament? 00:48:33.62\00:48:36.70 It is tremendously parallel 00:48:36.73\00:48:38.57 to what happened in the Old Testament. 00:48:38.60\00:48:40.86 And so in Matthew 24:1, 2 we find these words. 00:48:40.89\00:48:47.78 "Then Jesus went out and departed from the temple, 00:48:47.81\00:48:51.00 and His disciples came up to show Him 00:48:51.03\00:48:53.08 the buildings of the temple. 00:48:53.11\00:48:54.69 And Jesus said to them, 00:48:54.72\00:48:56.16 'Do you not see all these things? 00:48:56.19\00:48:58.74 Assuredly, I say to you, 00:48:58.77\00:49:00.63 not one stone shall be left here upon another, 00:49:00.66\00:49:04.63 that shall not be thrown down.'" 00:49:04.66\00:49:09.22 Was Jerusalem gonna be left desolate again? 00:49:09.25\00:49:12.46 Was the Shekinah going to forsake them again? Absolutely. 00:49:12.49\00:49:16.73 Was it because of abominations? Go with me to Matthew 24:15. 00:49:16.76\00:49:24.43 Matthew 24:15. 00:49:24.46\00:49:26.35 Here we reach the most important point of our study. 00:49:26.38\00:49:30.07 It says there and we read this in our first lecture, 00:49:30.10\00:49:34.61 "Therefore when you see the 'abomination of desolation.'" 00:49:34.64\00:49:40.79 Is that similar terminology to what we read in Ezekiel? 00:49:40.82\00:49:44.95 It's identical terminology to what we read in Ezekiel. 00:49:44.98\00:49:49.08 Did the abominations lead to desolation? 00:49:49.11\00:49:51.45 They most certainly did. 00:49:51.48\00:49:52.85 "Therefore when you see the 'abomination of desolation,' 00:49:52.88\00:49:55.85 spoken of by" who? 00:49:55.88\00:49:58.67 Did we read that in Daniel Chapter 9? 00:49:58.70\00:50:01.33 Yes, we did. 00:50:01.36\00:50:02.73 "Spoken of by Daniel the prophet, 00:50:02.76\00:50:05.49 standing in the," what? 00:50:05.52\00:50:07.44 "In the holy place whoever reads, let him understand." 00:50:07.47\00:50:12.27 What was Jesus talking about when He said, 00:50:12.30\00:50:14.10 "When you see the abomination of desolation? 00:50:14.13\00:50:17.15 He's saying that there was a particular abomination 00:50:17.18\00:50:19.71 that ultimately marked the desolation of Jerusalem. 00:50:19.74\00:50:23.50 And what was that? Notice Luke 21:20. 00:50:23.53\00:50:29.40 Luke 21:20. This is a parallel passage. 00:50:29.43\00:50:33.46 This is the reason why it's so important 00:50:33.49\00:50:35.37 to study the gospels together. 00:50:35.40\00:50:37.49 We have to study Matthew 24, Mark 13, 00:50:37.52\00:50:41.07 and Luke 21 together because they complement one another. 00:50:41.10\00:50:45.11 They explain one another. Now notice Luke 21:20. 00:50:45.14\00:50:51.68 "But when you see Jerusalem," what? 00:50:51.71\00:50:56.83 "Surrounded by armies." 00:50:56.86\00:51:01.14 Is that the abomination? Yes, it is. 00:51:01.17\00:51:04.35 We're gonna talk about what was abominable about that? 00:51:04.38\00:51:07.77 I'll just give you little inkling 00:51:07.80\00:51:09.17 of some of the things that we're gonna study. 00:51:09.20\00:51:10.81 The Romans when they came 00:51:10.84\00:51:12.76 outside the city of Jerusalem, they had these standards. 00:51:12.79\00:51:17.46 They had an eagle and a sunburst on the standards. 00:51:17.49\00:51:22.43 And when these were put 00:51:22.46\00:51:23.83 outside the city of Jerusalem in the ground 00:51:23.86\00:51:26.71 just a few furlongs from the city wall, 00:51:26.74\00:51:30.28 the Romans as was their custom knelt 00:51:30.31\00:51:33.68 and they worshipped the standards 00:51:33.71\00:51:36.49 that had the eagle and the sun. Interesting. 00:51:36.52\00:51:41.85 Were there two different groups inside the holy city? 00:51:41.88\00:51:44.87 Were those who were there in the city, 00:51:44.90\00:51:46.78 those who were faithful to God, the Christians? 00:51:46.81\00:51:50.33 And were those who were apostate? Absolutely. 00:51:50.36\00:51:53.87 Did God, so to speak, 00:51:53.90\00:51:55.86 place a mark upon His faithful ones 00:51:55.89\00:51:59.03 so that they would not be destroyed 00:51:59.06\00:52:00.74 when the city was destroyed just like in the Old Testament? 00:52:00.77\00:52:04.18 So it says, "When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies," 00:52:04.21\00:52:07.65 that is the abomination in other words. 00:52:07.68\00:52:10.57 "Then know that its," what? "That its desolation is near." 00:52:10.60\00:52:17.34 Let me ask you, is the abomination 00:52:17.37\00:52:19.59 and is the desolation the same thing? No. 00:52:19.62\00:52:23.59 Are they related? Most certainly. 00:52:23.62\00:52:25.96 The abomination is the announcement 00:52:25.99\00:52:29.37 that what is coming? 00:52:29.40\00:52:30.77 That desolation is coming. 00:52:30.80\00:52:32.94 Because it says here, "When you see Jerusalem 00:52:32.97\00:52:35.26 surrounded by armies know that its desolation is near." 00:52:35.29\00:52:38.56 So when you see the abomination, 00:52:38.59\00:52:40.09 the desolation has not taken place yet. 00:52:40.12\00:52:43.23 Because it says you know that it's near 00:52:43.26\00:52:45.64 when you see the abomination. 00:52:45.67\00:52:47.68 Later on, we're gonna study 00:52:47.71\00:52:49.08 how this is fulfilled in the end time. 00:52:49.11\00:52:51.31 It has to do with the Sabbath. 00:52:51.34\00:52:53.47 And it has to do with the sun. 00:52:53.50\00:52:55.57 And it has to do with abominations 00:52:55.60\00:52:57.79 being committed within the Christian world. 00:52:57.82\00:52:59.85 And it has to do with Jesus abandoning 00:52:59.88\00:53:03.01 the service and the sanctuary 00:53:03.04\00:53:05.51 and Christendom being left desolate. 00:53:05.54\00:53:08.62 You see, all of this is typological of end time events. 00:53:08.65\00:53:13.60 That's why we had, you know, 00:53:13.63\00:53:15.59 this first study so that we could study the principles 00:53:15.62\00:53:19.34 that this prophecy is actually being fulfilled twice. 00:53:19.37\00:53:23.07 It's fulfilled with the destruction of Jerusalem, 00:53:23.10\00:53:25.22 but it's also fulfilled at the end of the world. 00:53:25.25\00:53:28.64 I want to conclude by reading Luke 19:41-44. 00:53:28.67\00:53:34.28 Luke 19:41-44. 00:53:34.31\00:53:37.89 Here Jesus is speaking and I want you to notice 00:53:37.92\00:53:41.76 how tragic the prophecy that He is uttering at this point. 00:53:41.79\00:53:48.51 "Now as He drew near, He saw the city 00:53:48.54\00:53:53.42 and," what? "And wept over it." 00:53:53.45\00:53:58.27 Jesus loved that city. 00:53:58.30\00:54:01.42 And He loved the people in that city. 00:54:01.45\00:54:05.85 "Now as He drew near, He saw the city 00:54:05.88\00:54:07.88 and wept over it, saying, 00:54:07.91\00:54:10.91 'If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, 00:54:10.94\00:54:16.88 the things that make for your peace.'" 00:54:16.91\00:54:19.18 If you only knew what it is that brings peace, 00:54:19.21\00:54:21.86 Jesus is saying. 00:54:21.89\00:54:23.26 "If you just accepted me, I'm the prince of peace," 00:54:23.29\00:54:25.85 is what Jesus is uttering. 00:54:25.88\00:54:28.42 "He says, 'But now they are hidden from your eyes. 00:54:28.45\00:54:33.37 For days will come upon you, when your enemies,'" 00:54:33.40\00:54:38.88 who were the enemies? The Romans. 00:54:38.91\00:54:41.90 "'When your enemies will build an embankment around you, 00:54:41.93\00:54:46.87 surround you, and close you in on every side.'" 00:54:46.90\00:54:51.66 Is that the same thing as Jerusalem being surrounded 00:54:51.69\00:54:54.12 by armies? Absolutely. 00:54:54.15\00:54:56.05 By the way, we still have to study 00:54:56.08\00:54:57.94 and this will be in our next lecture 00:54:57.97\00:54:59.70 the interesting fact that the city was besieged twice. 00:54:59.73\00:55:04.43 It was besieged once by Cestius 00:55:04.46\00:55:06.91 and then without any explanation, 00:55:06.94\00:55:08.83 he suddenly retreated. 00:55:08.86\00:55:10.87 And the false prophets in Jerusalem said, 00:55:10.90\00:55:12.76 "See we told you that God was gonna protect this city." 00:55:12.79\00:55:16.46 And they went after the Romans. 00:55:16.49\00:55:18.26 And the Romans suffered many losses. 00:55:18.29\00:55:20.28 But then the Romans came back and they besieged the city. 00:55:20.31\00:55:23.64 And they left no more. 00:55:23.67\00:55:25.32 All of that is symbolic of end time events. 00:55:25.35\00:55:29.08 So Jesus continues saying verse 43, 00:55:29.11\00:55:31.82 "For days will come upon you, 00:55:31.85\00:55:33.22 when your enemies will build an embankment around you, 00:55:33.25\00:55:35.78 surround you, and close you in on every side and level you." 00:55:35.81\00:55:41.45 Second destruction of Jerusalem? Yes. 00:55:41.48\00:55:44.06 "And your children within you to the ground. 00:55:44.09\00:55:47.60 And they will not leave in you one stone upon another." 00:55:47.63\00:55:53.26 Why? 00:55:53.29\00:55:54.66 "Because you did not know the time of your visitation." 00:55:54.69\00:56:01.52 You did not know that the Shekinah was in your midst. 00:56:01.55\00:56:05.13 You rejected the Shekinah. 00:56:05.16\00:56:07.26 And therefore the Shekinah will abandon your temple 00:56:07.29\00:56:10.13 and your city to return no more. 00:56:10.16\00:56:15.55 And so it was in the year 70 that Titus came, 00:56:15.58\00:56:19.76 by the way, a Pagan king like Nebuchadnezzar. 00:56:19.79\00:56:23.42 In the city, there was warfare and social unrest. 00:56:23.45\00:56:29.65 And there was pestilence and there was famine, 00:56:29.68\00:56:33.05 everything that's mentioned in Matthew 24. 00:56:33.08\00:56:35.73 And so he comes, he besieges the city, 00:56:35.76\00:56:38.59 and he destroys the city of Jerusalem. 00:56:38.62\00:56:41.49 He demolishes the temple. 00:56:41.52\00:56:43.17 He melts the gold that existed in the temple. 00:56:43.20\00:56:47.83 And by the way, Josephus tells us 00:56:47.86\00:56:50.23 that when Jerusalem was destroyed for the second time, 00:56:50.26\00:56:55.57 once again, the Book of Lamentations 00:56:55.60\00:56:59.88 was a song that was sung as people were being crucified 00:56:59.91\00:57:04.94 and as people were being let away captive 00:57:04.97\00:57:07.85 to the four corners of the earth. 00:57:07.88\00:57:12.19 Were you able to follow all the study this evening? 00:57:12.22\00:57:14.03 Yes. 00:57:14.06\00:57:15.43 You see, the first destruction of Jerusalem reveals 00:57:15.46\00:57:17.78 what was going to happen with the second destruction. 00:57:17.81\00:57:20.44 And the second destruction reveals 00:57:20.47\00:57:22.48 what will soon take place 00:57:22.51\00:57:24.66 in this world as unexpected by most. 00:57:24.69\00:57:30.21
