Daniel 11 verse 22 00:01:12.17\00:01:14.27 and that's the center of the book. 00:01:14.30\00:01:15.90 The center of the book is Jesus... 00:01:15.94\00:01:17.54 the center of the book is Calvary. 00:01:17.61\00:01:18.94 Yvonne: Hmmm... 00:01:18.97\00:01:20.31 James: So, we're going to go back now to chapter 1 00:01:20.34\00:01:22.31 and we're just going to begin again right from here... 00:01:22.34\00:01:24.25 we're just going to go through it verse by verse... 00:01:24.28\00:01:26.11 we'll start with a little bit of history, 00:01:26.15\00:01:27.78 we'll talk about, What led to this? 00:01:27.85\00:01:29.68 What were the things that were in place 00:01:29.75\00:01:31.85 that caused God to hand His people over 00:01:31.89\00:01:33.69 to Babylonian captivity 00:01:33.72\00:01:35.06 and allow that all to take place 00:01:35.09\00:01:37.03 and was it a good thing or was it not a good thing. 00:01:37.06\00:01:39.83 So, Jason, would you have a word for us as we step in? 00:01:39.86\00:01:42.60 Jason: Sure... "Dear heavenly Father, 00:01:42.63\00:01:44.07 we thank you so much for the opportunity to study Your Word. 00:01:44.10\00:01:46.97 We just ask that as we study the book of Daniel 00:01:47.00\00:01:50.44 that you would help us to see Christ on the pages, Father. 00:01:50.47\00:01:54.04 Please lead and guide our conversation, 00:01:54.08\00:01:57.55 in Jesus' name we pray, amen. " 00:01:57.58\00:01:59.45 All: Amen. 00:01:59.51\00:02:01.35 James: All right, so, Daniel chapter 1, 00:02:01.38\00:02:03.28 Yvonne, let's read verses 1 and 2 again, can we? 00:02:03.32\00:02:06.92 Yvonne: Sure, "In the third year of the reign 00:02:06.96\00:02:09.36 of Jehoiakim king of Judah, 00:02:09.39\00:02:11.06 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem 00:02:11.09\00:02:14.46 and besieged it. 00:02:14.50\00:02:15.83 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, 00:02:15.86\00:02:19.63 with some of the articles of the house of God, 00:02:19.67\00:02:22.47 which he carried into the land of Shinar 00:02:22.50\00:02:24.67 to the house of his god; 00:02:24.74\00:02:26.44 and he brought the articles into the treasure house of his god. " 00:02:26.47\00:02:30.11 James: All right, so we've talked about this a little bit, 00:02:30.15\00:02:32.21 but we want to go back now 00:02:32.25\00:02:34.08 and look at a little bit of the history. 00:02:34.12\00:02:35.45 So, here we have Nebuchadnezzar, a heathen king... heathen power, 00:02:35.48\00:02:41.12 Babylon... coming in and surrounding God's people. 00:02:41.16\00:02:44.69 Now, again and again and again in the Old Testament 00:02:44.73\00:02:47.80 when God's people are surrounded... they're delivered. 00:02:47.83\00:02:50.87 Surrounded... delivered... 00:02:50.90\00:02:52.23 2nd Corinthians chapter 20 I believe it is, 00:02:52.27\00:02:54.37 you have the Moabites and the Amorites... all of the... 00:02:54.40\00:02:57.24 surrounding God's people... they pray... 00:02:57.27\00:02:59.77 they flip their souls... they're delivered. 00:02:59.81\00:03:02.28 Why doesn't it happen this time? 00:03:02.31\00:03:03.85 Yvonne: Chronicles or...? 00:03:03.88\00:03:05.21 James: 2nd Chronicles chapter 20 Chronicles... yeah... 00:03:05.25\00:03:07.52 it talks about... that was just one example... 00:03:07.55\00:03:09.65 Hezekiah... there are a number of examples 00:03:09.68\00:03:11.69 where God delivers... God delivers... God delivers 00:03:11.72\00:03:13.42 and all of a sudden, now God isn't delivering. 00:03:13.46\00:03:15.49 Why isn't he delivering? 00:03:15.52\00:03:16.86 What's going on here? What's the history? 00:03:16.89\00:03:18.23 What's the history of behind this? 00:03:18.26\00:03:19.63 There are three books we want to look at. 00:03:19.69\00:03:22.73 One of them is Isaiah and also Jeremiah 00:03:22.76\00:03:25.80 and then, Ezekiel 00:03:25.83\00:03:27.50 and we would refer to Isaiah 00:03:27.54\00:03:30.11 as foretelling the destruction of Jerusalem without seeing it. 00:03:30.17\00:03:34.18 So, he was a few years before 00:03:34.21\00:03:37.58 the destruction actually took place 00:03:37.61\00:03:39.78 and then you have Jeremiah and Ezekiel 00:03:39.81\00:03:41.88 who are writing about it as it's happening. 00:03:41.92\00:03:44.42 Jeremiah is taking a posture toward the leaders in Judah 00:03:44.45\00:03:49.79 and through God's inspiration 00:03:49.82\00:03:51.83 telling them what you need to do, 00:03:51.86\00:03:53.19 "This is what you should do, 00:03:53.23\00:03:54.56 this is what God wants you to do. " 00:03:54.60\00:03:55.93 Yvonne: Hmmm... 00:03:55.96\00:03:57.30 James: And they treat him as though he is speaking treason. 00:03:57.33\00:04:00.10 They believe that God's going to deliver them no matter what. 00:04:00.14\00:04:04.31 They don't take an account of their sin, 00:04:04.34\00:04:07.54 they don't take account of how they've turned away from God, 00:04:07.58\00:04:10.41 they expect God to step in for them 00:04:10.45\00:04:11.91 even though they're not following Him... obeying Him... 00:04:11.95\00:04:13.55 and believing His prophets. 00:04:13.58\00:04:15.18 Jason: So, like a sense of entitlement... 00:04:15.22\00:04:16.69 James: They have a sense of entitlement... 00:04:16.72\00:04:18.12 they have a sense of entitlement 00:04:18.15\00:04:19.55 and Jeremiah says, "It's not going to work that way. " 00:04:19.62\00:04:21.72 Yvonne: Hmmm... 00:04:21.76\00:04:23.09 James: And the reason it's not going to work that way 00:04:23.12\00:04:24.46 is because when God covenanted with His people, 00:04:24.49\00:04:27.06 the whole point of that covenant agreement 00:04:27.10\00:04:29.60 was that God was going to work through them 00:04:29.63\00:04:32.07 to bring His name... His glory... to the nations 00:04:32.10\00:04:35.04 so that everyone could see that you know what? 00:04:35.07\00:04:37.97 the true Creator of heaven and earth 00:04:38.01\00:04:40.51 doesn't want you sacrificing your children in the fire... 00:04:40.54\00:04:43.45 doesn't want you committing all of the abominations 00:04:43.48\00:04:46.55 that sin has brought to your lives... 00:04:46.58\00:04:48.72 the true King and Creator of heaven and earth 00:04:48.75\00:04:51.39 wants you to live a life that's filled 00:04:51.42\00:04:53.05 with the fruit of the Spirit... joy, peace, love... 00:04:53.09\00:04:55.09 these are the things that God wanted to.. 00:04:55.12\00:04:57.46 to pour out upon the Gentiles 00:04:57.49\00:04:59.69 and He's going to do it through His people 00:04:59.73\00:05:01.23 but His people got lackadaisy. 00:05:01.26\00:05:02.90 Yvonne: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:05:02.93\00:05:04.27 James: They just started being content... sitting back... 00:05:04.30\00:05:05.80 doing nothing for the heathen nations... 00:05:05.83\00:05:08.10 thinking about themselves... becoming self-satisfied... 00:05:08.14\00:05:10.37 they were better than other nations... 00:05:10.41\00:05:11.74 and bit by bit, the people of the world were neglected. 00:05:11.77\00:05:16.34 Yvonne: And they also began to follow other gods didn't they? 00:05:16.38\00:05:18.95 I mean, worshipping the heavens and the... you know, all of that 00:05:18.98\00:05:22.92 and they... and they began to take on 00:05:22.95\00:05:26.09 the characteristics of the cultures around them 00:05:26.12\00:05:29.86 to the point where they... they were committing idolatry. 00:05:29.89\00:05:33.40 James: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:05:33.43\00:05:34.76 Jason: It's interesting how you see that coming into play 00:05:34.80\00:05:36.13 in today's society. 00:05:36.16\00:05:37.70 Yvonne: Exactly. 00:05:37.73\00:05:39.07 Jason: How people within churches... they're taking on... 00:05:39.10\00:05:41.47 they're going with the culture. 00:05:41.50\00:05:42.84 Yvonne: Right. 00:05:42.87\00:05:44.21 Jason: Whether it goes against God's principles or not... 00:05:44.24\00:05:46.71 you know, they go with that. 00:05:46.74\00:05:48.84 James: And that's been an age-long thing 00:05:48.88\00:05:51.38 because some of the prophecies we're talking about here... 00:05:51.41\00:05:53.62 in here... for worship for example 00:05:53.65\00:05:56.69 you know, the worship that God has outlined in His Word... 00:05:56.75\00:06:00.32 in the Law... is definitely different than the culture. 00:06:00.36\00:06:03.39 The culture says, "No, this is how you worship God... " 00:06:03.43\00:06:05.99 and the Word of God says, 00:06:06.03\00:06:07.66 "No, this is actually how you worship God. " 00:06:07.73\00:06:09.20 So, this is an age-long thing 00:06:09.23\00:06:11.17 that we're still experiencing to this day. 00:06:11.20\00:06:12.90 Yvonne: Right... right. 00:06:12.93\00:06:14.27 James: So, do you want to look at a couple of verses in... 00:06:14.30\00:06:16.00 in Jeremiah... Isaiah? 00:06:16.04\00:06:17.97 Ivor: Let's go to those verses now. 00:06:18.01\00:06:19.34 James: Okay, so we've got, we've got, for example, 00:06:19.37\00:06:21.14 the first one I'd like us to look at 00:06:21.18\00:06:22.51 that we talked about it a little bit 00:06:22.54\00:06:24.41 off Set is Isaiah 37 verse 7. 00:06:24.45\00:06:28.02 Now, you can imagine... 00:06:28.05\00:06:29.58 and I'm going to have Jason read this for us 00:06:29.62\00:06:31.95 because this is his verse, almost... Isaiah 37 verse 7. 00:06:31.99\00:06:35.82 Jason: Oh boy! I've got to read this. 00:06:35.86\00:06:37.86 James: It's your present verse, it's not your future verse. 00:06:37.89\00:06:40.13 Jason: Okay. 00:06:40.16\00:06:41.50 James: You can imagine Daniel and... 00:06:41.53\00:06:46.60 Did I say 37:7 or 39:7? 00:06:46.63\00:06:48.74 Yvonne: You said, 37:7... 00:06:48.77\00:06:50.11 James: It's 39 verse 7. 00:06:50.14\00:06:52.94 You can imagine Daniel and his friends... 00:06:52.97\00:06:54.91 now, we know that Daniel was just a young kid 00:06:54.94\00:06:57.01 when he went into captivity in Babylon 00:06:57.05\00:06:59.01 so, his parents are probably raising him 00:06:59.05\00:07:01.58 around the worship table... they were raising him on... 00:07:01.62\00:07:04.49 of course, the Old Testament but the book of Isaiah. 00:07:04.52\00:07:07.39 Isaiah is talking again... 00:07:07.42\00:07:09.72 it's doing the same thing we're doing in Daniel, 00:07:09.76\00:07:11.76 it's talking about the Prince of the Covenant... 00:07:11.79\00:07:13.76 it's talking about Jesus and it's talking about prophecy, 00:07:13.80\00:07:15.60 Jesus and prophecy... 00:07:15.63\00:07:16.97 Jesus and prophecy, 00:07:17.00\00:07:18.33 so, you got Isaiah 53 for example, 00:07:18.37\00:07:19.70 it talks about how He was wounded for our transgressions 00:07:19.73\00:07:22.04 and bruised for our iniquities and... 00:07:22.07\00:07:23.44 and then, you've got Isaiah 39 00:07:23.47\00:07:25.54 which talks about what's going to happen to us 00:07:25.57\00:07:27.98 in the context of prophecy and the future. 00:07:28.01\00:07:30.41 So, let's look at verse... 00:07:30.45\00:07:32.38 Jason: All right, "And they shall take away 00:07:32.41\00:07:35.15 some of your sons... " 00:07:35.18\00:07:36.52 James: Hey, wait a minute, I'm sorry to interrupt you... 00:07:36.55\00:07:37.89 can you start with verse 6? 00:07:37.92\00:07:40.72 That will give us some context there. 00:07:40.76\00:07:42.96 Jason: Sure, "Behold, the days are coming 00:07:42.99\00:07:45.16 when all that is in your house, 00:07:45.19\00:07:46.70 and what your fathers have accumulated 00:07:46.73\00:07:50.93 until this day, shall be carried to Babylon; 00:07:50.97\00:07:53.44 'nothing shall be left,' says the Lord. 00:07:53.47\00:07:55.97 And they shall take away some of your sons 00:07:56.00\00:07:58.51 who will descend from you, whom you will beget; 00:07:58.54\00:08:01.04 and they shall be eunuchs in the palace 00:08:01.08\00:08:04.15 of the king of Babylon. " 00:08:04.18\00:08:05.51 Yvonne: My! 00:08:05.55\00:08:06.88 James: Okay, so, what's interesting about this is, 00:08:06.92\00:08:09.42 when you go back to Daniel chapter 1 00:08:09.45\00:08:12.39 and you read verse 3, 00:08:12.42\00:08:14.92 "And the king spake unto Ashpenaz 00:08:14.96\00:08:16.56 the master of the eunuchs, 00:08:16.59\00:08:17.93 that he should bring certain children of Israel, 00:08:17.96\00:08:19.69 and of the king's seed and of the princes; 00:08:19.73\00:08:22.70 children in whom there was no blemish, 00:08:22.76\00:08:25.03 well favored, and skillful in wisdom, 00:08:25.07\00:08:27.30 and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science... " 00:08:27.34\00:08:29.90 et cetera... 00:08:29.94\00:08:31.27 so, Hezekiah was told, 00:08:31.31\00:08:34.51 "Your sons that shall come from you... " 00:08:34.54\00:08:36.54 and Jeremiah told Ashpenaz, 00:08:36.58\00:08:41.28 "I want you to bring some of the king's seed. " 00:08:41.32\00:08:43.75 Ivor: Nebuchadnezzar... James: Excuse me... 00:08:43.79\00:08:45.32 Nebuchadnezzar told Ashpenaz, what did I say? 00:08:45.35\00:08:46.86 Ivor: I think you said, "Jeremiah... " 00:08:46.89\00:08:48.42 James: Nebuchadnezzar tells Ashpenaz, 00:08:48.46\00:08:50.36 "I want you to bring some of the king's seed... the princes... 00:08:50.39\00:08:53.43 and they're going to be eunuchs. " 00:08:53.46\00:08:55.26 So, it's interesting... and I'm just going to say this 00:08:55.30\00:08:59.33 because we talked about it earlier how God inspires Isaiah 00:08:59.37\00:09:04.11 with this prophecy... 00:09:04.14\00:09:05.71 God inspires Nebuchadnezzar to fulfill the prophecy. 00:09:05.74\00:09:09.51 James: I mean, we have a hard time as "Christians" 00:09:09.54\00:09:15.92 maybe as Adventists... 00:09:15.95\00:09:17.49 thinking that God can speak through anyone but us. 00:09:17.52\00:09:19.79 All: Hmmm... hmmm... Yvonne: That's true. 00:09:19.82\00:09:21.69 James: If God can speak through a donkey, 00:09:21.72\00:09:23.59 God can speak through rocks if He has to, 00:09:23.63\00:09:25.19 God can speak through... 00:09:25.23\00:09:26.56 and He will choose whom He will choose. 00:09:26.59\00:09:27.93 And in this point in time... 00:09:27.96\00:09:29.43 at this point in history, God would rather have... 00:09:29.46\00:09:32.47 God would rather use someone who's cold 00:09:32.50\00:09:34.80 than someone who's lukewarm. 00:09:34.84\00:09:36.17 Ivor: Hmmm... hmmm... Yvonne: Hmmm... 00:09:36.20\00:09:37.54 So, He's using Nebuchadnezzar... not His people. 00:09:37.57\00:09:40.58 Nebuchadnezzar is in a place 00:09:40.64\00:09:43.08 where he's able to fulfill God's will... 00:09:43.11\00:09:45.28 and we weren't... God's people weren't. 00:09:45.31\00:09:47.05 All: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:09:47.12\00:09:48.45 James: This is... this is hard though isn't it, Jason? 00:09:48.48\00:09:50.05 I'm thinking about this in relation to you 00:09:50.09\00:09:51.59 because I'm thinking, "Wow, you're... you're... 00:09:51.65\00:09:53.56 you're not a eunuch, of course, but you're single, right? 00:09:53.59\00:09:56.73 Jason: No, I've got a... I've got a girlfriend. 00:09:56.76\00:09:58.09 James: You've got a girlfriend but you're not married. 00:09:58.13\00:09:59.56 Jason: Not married, yeah. 00:09:59.59\00:10:00.93 James: So, you think about Daniel... his situation here... 00:10:00.96\00:10:04.47 he's going to be single permanently... 00:10:04.50\00:10:08.44 permanently. 00:10:08.47\00:10:10.17 Yvonne: He had no choice of his own. 00:10:10.21\00:10:12.14 Jason: Yeah. James: No choice of his own. 00:10:12.17\00:10:13.61 Jesus talks about this in the New Testament. 00:10:13.64\00:10:15.01 I think it is in Matthew 19. 00:10:15.04\00:10:16.38 He said, "Some men are eunuchs by birth 00:10:16.41\00:10:19.21 and some men make themselves eunuchs for God's... 00:10:19.25\00:10:21.08 kingdom of God's sake 00:10:21.12\00:10:22.45 or others are made eunuchs by other men 00:10:22.48\00:10:23.95 and that's what happens with Daniel. 00:10:23.99\00:10:25.49 Jason: Hmmm... Yvonne: Hmmm... 00:10:25.52\00:10:26.86 James: And you wonder, how did he... 00:10:26.89\00:10:28.22 how was he able not to get bitter over this? 00:10:28.26\00:10:30.16 Yvonne: Hmmm... 00:10:30.56\00:10:31.89 James: And I think... and I'm just going to say this, 00:10:31.93\00:10:33.43 I don't know... I don't read the verses 00:10:33.46\00:10:34.80 but I think there probably were a lot of God's people 00:10:34.83\00:10:37.93 who did get bitter over this whole process. 00:10:37.97\00:10:39.83 Jason: Oh, yeah. Yvonne: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:10:39.87\00:10:41.70 James: But Daniel doesn't and... 00:10:41.74\00:10:43.41 how do we get ready for that? 00:10:43.44\00:10:45.01 Jason: Yeah, that would take a lot of prayer, I mean, I don't.. 00:10:45.04\00:10:50.28 I don't know how he didn't get bitter from that standpoint, 00:10:50.31\00:10:55.08 like, just... from me speaking... being real, 00:10:55.15\00:10:58.22 like, I think I would be very bitter in that situation. 00:10:58.25\00:11:01.69 James: Hmmm... so... and I love that real talk, Jason 00:11:01.72\00:11:05.06 so, let's think about this now because we're talking about... 00:11:05.09\00:11:09.03 in a sense... end-time prophecy 00:11:09.06\00:11:10.60 and what's going to happen in the end of time 00:11:10.63\00:11:13.00 and some people are really afraid, you know, 00:11:13.03\00:11:15.30 "Man, I don't know if I'm going to get through the end of time, 00:11:15.37\00:11:18.07 like, that's going to be tough, like, you know, 00:11:18.11\00:11:19.77 I'm going to probably capitulate 00:11:19.81\00:11:21.58 and how am I going to be able to stand... 00:11:21.64\00:11:23.31 and overcome temptation?" 00:11:23.35\00:11:24.68 And I tell young people especially 00:11:24.71\00:11:26.98 because we do a lot of ministry with young people 00:11:27.02\00:11:29.18 we deal with a couple of schools 00:11:29.22\00:11:30.55 and we have a lot of young people we talk to, 00:11:30.59\00:11:32.82 and I tell them, I say, 00:11:32.85\00:11:34.36 "You know, when the crisis comes, 00:11:34.39\00:11:36.46 and you can't buy or sell, 00:11:36.49\00:11:38.53 there's not going to be a lot of stuff 00:11:38.59\00:11:40.40 that's going to matter anymore at that time. " 00:11:40.43\00:11:41.76 Yvonne: Hmmm... hmmm... that's true. 00:11:41.80\00:11:43.37 James: "I mean, you're not going to have your cell phone... 00:11:43.40\00:11:44.83 you're not going to have your car... 00:11:44.87\00:11:46.20 you're not going get gas, 00:11:46.23\00:11:47.57 you're not going to be doing a lot of stuff 00:11:47.60\00:11:48.94 because you just can't 00:11:48.97\00:11:50.31 and not only that but you're going to realize 00:11:50.34\00:11:52.47 in that moment of time... 00:11:52.54\00:11:53.88 you're going to realize that Jesus is coming very soon, 00:11:53.91\00:11:57.05 like, prophecy is at an end... 00:11:57.08\00:11:59.71 like, we're almost ready for probation to close, 00:11:59.75\00:12:01.88 and so, all these plans that we've been having for life, 00:12:01.92\00:12:05.09 well, they kind of... 00:12:05.12\00:12:07.86 they diminish in the context of the fact 00:12:07.89\00:12:10.19 that the imminent return... Christ's return is imminent... 00:12:10.23\00:12:13.83 there it is, right there, it's coming. " 00:12:13.86\00:12:15.20 Now, I don't... we don't think that way right now, 00:12:15.23\00:12:17.60 because we have the prophecies and by faith we believe that 00:12:17.63\00:12:21.24 but we've not like, seeing them actually fulfill, 00:12:21.30\00:12:23.30 like, "Right now, here we go, it's over... " 00:12:23.34\00:12:25.11 You know what I'm saying? All: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:12:25.14\00:12:26.84 James: So, we live as though Christ were coming tomorrow 00:12:26.88\00:12:30.01 and we plan as though He weren't coming for a 100 years, 00:12:30.05\00:12:32.78 got a girlfriend... going to get married... 00:12:32.81\00:12:35.72 going to have a family, right? 00:12:35.75\00:12:37.39 Jason: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:12:37.42\00:12:39.05 James: But, when this process comes to be put in place, 00:12:39.12\00:12:42.06 all of our plans are going to change... 00:12:42.09\00:12:43.89 and God is going to give us a completely different spirit 00:12:43.93\00:12:46.46 and that's why it says here 00:12:46.49\00:12:48.00 and I... and I'm... we haven't gotten there yet 00:12:48.03\00:12:49.43 but that's why I believe it says here 00:12:49.46\00:12:51.33 that there was an excellent spirit in Daniel. 00:12:51.37\00:12:52.93 It wasn't his spirit, it was the Spirit of God. 00:12:52.97\00:12:55.00 Yvonne: Hmmm... 00:12:55.04\00:12:56.37 James: And it changed everything for Daniel. 00:12:56.40\00:12:57.81 I think it's going to change everything for us. 00:12:57.84\00:12:59.44 Yvonne: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:12:59.47\00:13:00.81 Ivor: Um... I would add here, 00:13:00.84\00:13:03.08 we were talking about this actually before we came on 00:13:03.11\00:13:07.88 but... in Isaiah 65... 00:13:07.92\00:13:11.15 or Isaiah 66... 00:13:11.19\00:13:12.59 in fact, why don't we go there really quickly if we can 00:13:12.62\00:13:16.39 Isaiah 66... 00:13:16.42\00:13:17.76 because Jason, this kind of goes to your... 00:13:17.79\00:13:20.76 you know, your question, just that whole idea 00:13:20.80\00:13:23.77 of how he was able to... and kind of jumps a little bit 00:13:23.83\00:13:28.90 ahead into the story of Daniel chapter 1 00:13:28.94\00:13:34.74 but if you look at verse 15... remember Isaiah... 00:13:34.78\00:13:38.81 he's prophesying not only about end-time events, 00:13:38.88\00:13:43.35 he's also prophesying in a more immediate context 00:13:43.39\00:13:47.82 what's going to happen to Jerusalem 00:13:47.86\00:13:49.82 and it says here in Isaiah 66:15, 00:13:49.86\00:13:51.73 "For behold, the LORD will come, 00:13:51.79\00:13:53.60 His chariots like a whirlwind to render His anger with fury 00:13:53.63\00:13:57.53 and His rebuke with flames of fire. 00:13:57.57\00:13:59.03 For by fire and by His sword 00:13:59.07\00:14:02.30 will the LORD plead with all flesh: 00:14:02.37\00:14:05.21 and the slain of the LORD shall be many. " 00:14:05.24\00:14:07.01 And now, look at verse 17, "They that sanctify themselves 00:14:07.08\00:14:11.41 and purify themselves in the garden, 00:14:11.48\00:14:13.95 behind one tree in the midst, eating swine's flesh 00:14:14.02\00:14:17.22 and the abomination and the mouse, 00:14:17.25\00:14:18.92 shall be consumed together, saith the LORD." 00:14:18.95\00:14:20.36 All: Hmmm... 00:14:20.39\00:14:21.72 Ivor: Now, Daniel chapter one... 00:14:21.76\00:14:25.13 Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego 00:14:25.16\00:14:27.93 are invited to eat the king's meat. 00:14:27.96\00:14:30.73 All: Hmmm... hmmm... Ivor: Swine's flesh... 00:14:30.77\00:14:32.47 Ivor: And all the stuff... 00:14:32.50\00:14:34.44 Yvonne: Oh... 00:14:34.47\00:14:36.00 Ivor: They don't do it. Yvonne: Right. 00:14:36.04\00:14:38.21 Ivor: But the other Hebrews do it. 00:14:38.24\00:14:39.77 James: Hmmm... hmmm... Yvonne: Hmmm... 00:14:39.81\00:14:41.28 Ivor: Without much of a problem. 00:14:41.31\00:14:42.64 James: Hmmm... 00:14:42.68\00:14:44.35 Ivor: Why? 00:14:44.38\00:14:46.05 Well, I believe that crisis doesn't reveal... 00:14:46.08\00:14:52.89 or crisis doesn't produce character... it reveals it. 00:14:52.92\00:14:56.86 James: Hmmm... hmmm... All: Hmmm... 00:14:56.89\00:14:58.23 Ivor: The reason why those Hebrews in Daniel 1 were so able 00:14:58.26\00:15:00.90 like, "Oh, yeah... king's meat... not a problem" 00:15:00.93\00:15:02.60 king's wine... not a problem... " 00:15:02.63\00:15:04.03 is most likely because they had been doing that already. 00:15:04.07\00:15:10.21 Yvonne: Oh! 00:15:10.24\00:15:11.57 Ivor: They had been doing that all along. 00:15:11.61\00:15:13.71 Daniel had been preparing all along... 00:15:13.74\00:15:15.81 Daniel had been living that life all along 00:15:15.84\00:15:18.38 so when the crisis hit, character is revealed, 00:15:18.41\00:15:20.72 right, here's... here's Daniel, 00:15:20.75\00:15:23.52 they're like, "Whoa! we don't do that... " 00:15:23.55\00:15:25.89 James: Hmmm... Hmmm... 00:15:25.92\00:15:27.26 Ivor: The others... Ivor showing how they ate. 00:15:27.29\00:15:29.62 Right, so this lesson for us really... 00:15:29.66\00:15:34.53 really speaks to the fact that you can't prepare for crisis 00:15:34.56\00:15:39.80 in the midst of a crisis. 00:15:39.83\00:15:41.27 All: Hmmm... hmmm... hmmm... 00:15:41.30\00:15:42.64 Ivor: You prepare for the crisis before the crisis hits 00:15:42.67\00:15:45.17 and I believe that's what Daniel and the Hebrews did 00:15:45.21\00:15:48.24 and his friends did. 00:15:48.28\00:15:49.61 They were preparing for the crisis... before it hit 00:15:49.64\00:15:52.88 and that is going to be key... you know, 00:15:52.91\00:15:56.15 when we talk about end-time events for God's people. 00:15:56.18\00:15:58.42 Yvonne: Hmmm... hmmm... that's good. 00:15:58.45\00:15:59.95 James: Let's look at some more verses on this, 00:16:00.02\00:16:02.62 Yvonne, would you read for us in Jeremiah 24, 00:16:02.66\00:16:05.19 and I think it would be really good for us to read 00:16:05.23\00:16:08.56 all seven verses Jeremiah 24... 00:16:08.60\00:16:11.73 not all seven verses but the first seven verses. 00:16:11.77\00:16:13.94 Yvonne: Sure... sure. 00:16:13.97\00:16:15.30 "The Lord showed me, and there were two baskets of figs 00:16:15.34\00:16:19.41 set before the temple of the Lord, 00:16:19.47\00:16:21.18 after Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon 00:16:21.21\00:16:23.48 had carried away captive Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, 00:16:23.51\00:16:27.82 king of Judah, 00:16:27.85\00:16:29.18 and the princes of Judah with the craftsmen and smiths, 00:16:29.22\00:16:31.62 from Jerusalem, and had brought them to Babylon. 00:16:31.65\00:16:34.39 One basket had very good figs, 00:16:34.42\00:16:36.52 like the figs that are first ripe; 00:16:36.56\00:16:38.83 and the other basket had very bad figs 00:16:38.89\00:16:41.10 which could not be eaten, they were so bad. 00:16:41.13\00:16:43.03 Then the Lord said to me, "What do you see, Jeremiah?" 00:16:43.06\00:16:46.43 And I said, 'Figs, the good figs, very good; 00:16:46.47\00:16:49.54 and the bad, very bad, 00:16:49.57\00:16:51.11 which cannot be eaten, they are so bad. ' 00:16:51.17\00:16:53.68 Again the word of the Lord came to me saying, 00:16:53.71\00:16:56.14 'Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: 00:16:56.21\00:16:58.68 Like these good figs, so will I acknowledge those 00:16:58.71\00:17:02.42 who are carried away captive from Judah, 00:17:02.45\00:17:04.35 whom I have sent out of this place for their own good, 00:17:04.39\00:17:07.69 into the land of the Chaldeans. 00:17:07.72\00:17:09.99 For I will set My eyes on them for good, 00:17:10.03\00:17:12.79 and I will bring them back to this land; 00:17:12.83\00:17:15.53 I will build them and not pull them down, 00:17:15.56\00:17:18.17 and I will plant them and not pluck them up. 00:17:18.20\00:17:21.00 Then I will give them a heart to know Me, 00:17:21.04\00:17:23.74 that I am the Lord; and they shall be My people, 00:17:23.77\00:17:27.18 and I will be their God, 00:17:27.21\00:17:28.74 for they shall return to Me with their whole heart. " 00:17:28.81\00:17:32.21 James: So, this is the picture 00:17:32.28\00:17:34.75 that Ivor is painting for us right here. 00:17:34.78\00:17:38.32 Yvonne: Yes... 00:17:38.35\00:17:39.82 James: And this last verse... this covenantal language... 00:17:39.85\00:17:41.89 they're going to return to me with their whole heart... 00:17:41.92\00:17:43.99 I'm going to be their God, they're going to be my people. 00:17:44.03\00:17:46.09 That's the new-covenant language 00:17:46.13\00:17:47.66 and God had that experience with Nebuchadnezzar 00:17:47.70\00:17:50.67 and He has that experience with Daniel and his friends. 00:17:50.70\00:17:53.03 God is looking for His people. 00:17:53.07\00:17:54.50 Some of these people are in His "church. " 00:17:54.54\00:17:56.81 Okay, some of His people are 00:17:56.84\00:17:59.07 scattered throughout all these different folds. 00:17:59.11\00:18:01.78 Jesus says in John chapter 10, "I have many folds... 00:18:01.81\00:18:06.01 many sheep in many folds 00:18:06.05\00:18:07.88 and they're going to hear My voice... 00:18:07.92\00:18:09.95 I'm going to call them and they're going to hear My voice 00:18:09.98\00:18:12.05 and there will be one fold and one shepherd. " 00:18:12.09\00:18:13.82 That's what we see in this prophecy 00:18:13.86\00:18:17.66 moving through Daniel through Revelation... 00:18:17.69\00:18:19.43 that's what God's ultimate goal is for all of His people 00:18:19.46\00:18:21.96 and so, what Ivor was saying here, 00:18:22.00\00:18:24.07 I think is really powerful, 00:18:24.10\00:18:25.43 there are good figs and there are bad figs. 00:18:25.47\00:18:27.80 There is wheat and there are tares 00:18:27.84\00:18:29.70 and there is gold and silver and precious stones 00:18:29.74\00:18:32.71 and there's wood and there's hay and there's stubble 00:18:32.74\00:18:35.68 and how do we know? 00:18:35.71\00:18:37.05 We don't... only God knows 00:18:37.11\00:18:38.45 but what God does is, 00:18:38.48\00:18:40.15 He allows trials and tests to come to us 00:18:40.18\00:18:42.48 to reveal what we are... not to make us what we... 00:18:42.52\00:18:45.15 well, I shouldn't say it doesn't make us what we are 00:18:45.22\00:18:47.62 because tests actually do develop character 00:18:47.66\00:18:49.76 but the ultimate test... 00:18:49.82\00:18:51.49 the... the... the ultimate hour of temptation 00:18:51.53\00:18:54.13 is talked about in Revelation's churches... 00:18:54.20\00:18:56.73 is a test of revelation more than it's a test of 00:18:56.77\00:18:59.43 our product and development. 00:18:59.50\00:19:01.84 Yvonne: Hmmm... interesting. 00:19:01.87\00:19:04.07 Could I... can we look at verse 2 for a second 00:19:04.11\00:19:06.98 because I wanted to bring out something. 00:19:07.01\00:19:09.44 James: Verse 2 of Daniel? 00:19:09.48\00:19:10.81 Yvonne: Yes, um, sorry, Daniel 1 verse 2, 00:19:10.85\00:19:13.48 and... when it said that Jehoiakim 00:19:13.52\00:19:16.55 took some of the articles of the house of God 00:19:16.58\00:19:18.92 into the house of his god 00:19:18.95\00:19:21.22 and he brought the articles into the treasure house of his god. 00:19:21.26\00:19:25.26 So, you have this scene... 00:19:25.29\00:19:27.53 James and Ivor: You mean Nebuchadnezzar... 00:19:27.60\00:19:29.10 James: Nebuchadnezzar took some of the articles... 00:19:29.13\00:19:31.83 Yvonne: "Then the Lord gave Jehoiakim... 00:19:31.87\00:19:33.54 with some of the articles... " 00:19:33.57\00:19:35.74 James: Right, so, Nebuchadnezzar comes to besiege Jerusalem, 00:19:35.77\00:19:40.01 and the Lord gives Jehoiakim as captive to him. 00:19:40.04\00:19:42.41 Yvonne: Oh, oh, oh, my bad, sorry, thank you, thank you. 00:19:42.44\00:19:44.45 Okay, so you have this situation where... 00:19:44.48\00:19:47.88 where the articles are brought into the temple 00:19:47.92\00:19:51.72 and... and nothing really... 00:19:51.75\00:19:55.36 you were saying earlier before in our previous program 00:19:55.39\00:19:58.66 that God humbled Himself basically in this 00:19:58.69\00:20:01.83 but it's interesting, I think it's 1st Samuel 5 00:20:01.86\00:20:04.47 or 2nd Samuel 5 where the... 00:20:04.50\00:20:07.77 the Ark of the Covenant is taken in before Dagon 00:20:07.80\00:20:11.94 and Dagon falls prostrate before the Ark, 00:20:11.97\00:20:15.54 it's... God lets us know that His allowing this is not 00:20:15.58\00:20:21.58 because He can't do something, 00:20:21.62\00:20:24.32 it's because He chooses not to do something 00:20:24.35\00:20:27.36 and so, it's not that He... 00:20:27.39\00:20:29.66 that this other "god" was so powerful, 00:20:29.72\00:20:33.90 that he could take in the things of our God... 00:20:33.93\00:20:38.23 no, it's that God just allowed it for His own purposes 00:20:38.27\00:20:41.94 and I think sometimes people misunderstand 00:20:41.97\00:20:45.17 and don't realize how powerful and sovereign God is 00:20:45.21\00:20:49.61 but He... I mean... He just allowed it, 00:20:49.64\00:20:52.88 He didn't... it wasn't... 00:20:52.91\00:20:54.55 it wasn't because He couldn't do anything about it. 00:20:54.58\00:20:57.45 Ivor: That's a very good point because God... 00:20:57.49\00:20:59.95 what you see here is... and just what we read before 00:20:59.99\00:21:04.46 "I will bring them there for their good... " 00:21:04.49\00:21:07.36 it's a very interesting phrase, 00:21:07.40\00:21:09.53 like, God is allowing this to happen 00:21:09.56\00:21:11.60 for the good of His people. 00:21:11.63\00:21:13.74 For the revelation of His character in them, 00:21:13.77\00:21:18.17 right, talking about the good... the good fix, 00:21:18.21\00:21:22.58 right, so, in the same way, 00:21:22.64\00:21:24.91 we can look at what's going to happen at the end of time, 00:21:24.95\00:21:28.28 because we know that Babylon is going to make a move... 00:21:28.35\00:21:31.65 spiritual Babylon is going to make a move against God's people 00:21:31.69\00:21:34.19 and God's going to allow certain things to happen 00:21:34.22\00:21:37.43 but those things are for our good. 00:21:37.46\00:21:40.50 Yvonne: Hmmm... 00:21:40.53\00:21:41.86 Ivor: Right, they're going to somehow or another benefit... 00:21:41.90\00:21:45.43 God is not saying, "I don't care about you. " 00:21:45.47\00:21:46.97 He's saying, "I'm going to allow these things to happen, 00:21:47.00\00:21:49.67 I'm going to... I don't know... let the winds blow... " 00:21:49.70\00:21:52.31 or "I'm going to allow these things to occur for your good. " 00:21:52.37\00:21:56.41 What's about to happen is for your good 00:21:56.44\00:21:59.01 in light of the big picture... 00:21:59.05\00:22:00.55 in light of eternity, this is for your good. 00:22:00.58\00:22:02.88 Ivor: Yeah... yeah. Yvonne: That's good. 00:22:02.95\00:22:04.95 Jason: Another interesting thing is that 00:22:04.99\00:22:07.06 when people are going through trials, 00:22:07.09\00:22:09.16 how they react during those trials 00:22:09.19\00:22:11.23 is a witness to other people. 00:22:11.26\00:22:13.23 So, when people are being persecuted and all that stuff... 00:22:13.26\00:22:16.60 I forgot where this was, 00:22:16.63\00:22:18.33 but there was persecution taking place 00:22:18.37\00:22:22.17 and Christianity just continued to grow 00:22:22.20\00:22:25.94 rather than... 00:22:25.97\00:22:27.81 James: Early church... Yvonne: Like with Nero... 00:22:27.84\00:22:29.48 James: The early church, 1,000s were added to the church, 00:22:29.51\00:22:32.18 people were being crucified left, right and center, 00:22:32.21\00:22:35.62 I mean... persecuted left, right and center, 00:22:35.65\00:22:38.12 and yet the church continued to grow. 00:22:38.15\00:22:39.62 Jason: Yes, yes. 00:22:39.65\00:22:40.99 James: Yeah, definitely... a couple more verses 00:22:41.02\00:22:42.92 I wanted to read just to summarize this 00:22:42.99\00:22:44.99 a little bit more in John chapter 10. 00:22:45.03\00:22:46.73 Now, we referenced John chapter 10 00:22:46.80\00:22:48.46 but I think the connection here is really interesting 00:22:48.50\00:22:50.53 in relationship to what Yvonne just brought up 00:22:50.57\00:22:53.07 so, John chapter 10... 00:22:53.10\00:22:54.90 and let's just start with verse 14 00:22:54.94\00:22:56.94 and then read to verse 18. 00:22:57.01\00:22:59.01 Jason: "I am the good shepherd; and I know my sheep, 00:22:59.04\00:23:01.74 and am known by My own. 00:23:01.81\00:23:03.85 As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; 00:23:03.88\00:23:07.02 and I lay down My life for the sheep. 00:23:07.05\00:23:09.32 And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; 00:23:09.35\00:23:12.72 them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; 00:23:12.75\00:23:16.06 and there will be one flock and one shepherd. 00:23:16.09\00:23:18.43 Therefore, My Father loves Me, 00:23:18.46\00:23:20.86 because I lay down My life that I may take it again. 00:23:20.90\00:23:24.80 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. 00:23:24.83\00:23:28.70 I have power to lay it down, 00:23:28.74\00:23:30.81 and I have power to take it again. 00:23:30.84\00:23:32.97 This command I have received from My Father. " 00:23:33.01\00:23:35.98 James: See how those two thoughts 00:23:36.01\00:23:37.41 are coming together here. 00:23:37.45\00:23:38.85 So, what Yvonne was saying was, 00:23:38.88\00:23:40.28 He didn't have to humble Himself... 00:23:40.32\00:23:42.08 He didn't have to go to Babylon... 00:23:42.12\00:23:43.65 He didn't have to let them take those goods... 00:23:43.69\00:23:45.59 God didn't have to do that but He chose to do it. 00:23:45.65\00:23:48.32 He chose to lay down His life just like Calvary, 00:23:48.39\00:23:50.66 He chose to lay it down... why? 00:23:50.69\00:23:52.09 "Because I have other sheep that are not of this fold. 00:23:52.13\00:23:54.83 I want Nebuchadnezzar in heaven. 00:23:54.86\00:23:56.93 Daniel, Daniel, I want Nebuchadnezzar in heaven, 00:23:56.97\00:23:59.67 Daniel, I want you to do some Captive Evangelism. " 00:23:59.70\00:24:01.90 That's what we talked about, "Captive Evangelism... " 00:24:01.94\00:24:04.11 "I want you to get in there 00:24:04.14\00:24:05.81 and I want to use you in a powerful way 00:24:05.84\00:24:08.34 to reach that king's heart. 00:24:08.38\00:24:09.81 I want to use you to reach all of Babylon... 00:24:09.84\00:24:13.25 I want that king to be so impacted 00:24:13.28\00:24:15.42 by this dream I'm going to give him 00:24:15.48\00:24:17.55 and the way I'm going to work through you 00:24:17.59\00:24:20.06 that the whole world hears about this 00:24:20.09\00:24:22.52 and that the prophecies I'm going to give you... 00:24:22.56\00:24:24.59 they're going to be... 00:24:24.63\00:24:25.96 they're going to be preaching these prophecies 00:24:25.99\00:24:27.40 till the end of time. " 00:24:27.43\00:24:29.16 Yvonne: Hmmm... wow! 00:24:29.20\00:24:30.53 Was it worth being a eunuch? 00:24:30.57\00:24:32.57 Oh man! 00:24:32.60\00:24:33.94 Daniel's like, "Really me? Wow!" 00:24:33.97\00:24:36.94 I think at the end of his life he'd look back 00:24:36.97\00:24:38.84 and he'd go, "Wow! you know, 00:24:38.87\00:24:40.21 I wouldn't have it any other way. " 00:24:40.24\00:24:41.58 Yvonne: Hmmm... James: The privilege they have, 00:24:41.61\00:24:43.35 when Daniel gets to heaven, he's like... 00:24:43.38\00:24:44.78 looks at the way God used him to speak to us... 00:24:44.81\00:24:49.15 I mean, when I came into the church, 00:24:49.18\00:24:51.42 Daniel 2 was like, foundational for me, 00:24:51.45\00:24:53.49 like, Daniel's prophecies were like, "Wow! 00:24:53.52\00:24:55.52 Yvonne: Hmmm... Ivor: Hmmm... 00:24:55.56\00:24:56.89 James: For Daniel to be able to see the impact 00:24:56.93\00:24:59.86 that his life had and the way God used him, 00:24:59.89\00:25:02.93 I think it would be the same with us. 00:25:02.96\00:25:04.30 So, what it comes down to Jason is, just trust in Him, 00:25:04.33\00:25:07.34 like, trusting that God knows 00:25:07.37\00:25:09.30 ultimately what's going to make us happy and fulfill us 00:25:09.34\00:25:11.91 in this life as we go forward. 00:25:11.94\00:25:14.34 Jason: Sounds like Daniel found his purpose. 00:25:14.38\00:25:16.68 James: Oh! that's it! you're taking us in now, 00:25:16.71\00:25:18.71 what are you doing? You're taking us right in for it, 00:25:18.75\00:25:20.62 right, you know how that goes, right? 00:25:20.65\00:25:23.39 That's... that's Daniel chapter 1 and verse 8, 00:25:23.42\00:25:26.49 yeah, that's Daniel 1 verse 8, let's jump in there real quick, 00:25:26.52\00:25:29.79 Daniel 1 verse 8, read that verse for us Jason. 00:25:29.82\00:25:31.53 Jason: "But Daniel purposed in his heart... " 00:25:31.56\00:25:33.23 James: Oh... he what? Jason: He purposed in his heart. 00:25:33.26\00:25:34.96 James: Oh... 00:25:35.00\00:25:36.33 Jason: "that he would not defile himself 00:25:36.36\00:25:38.13 with the portion of the king's delicacies, 00:25:38.17\00:25:40.17 nor with the wine which he drank; 00:25:40.20\00:25:41.90 therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs 00:25:41.94\00:25:44.84 that he might not defile himself. " 00:25:44.87\00:25:46.78 James: Okay, I got a new rendition of this verse 00:25:46.81\00:25:49.41 from Jason... inspired from Jason... 00:25:49.44\00:25:51.38 All: Laughter. 00:25:51.41\00:25:52.78 James: But Daniel found purpose in his heart. 00:25:52.81\00:25:55.95 Daniel found his purpose in his heart, 00:25:55.98\00:25:59.29 Daniel found God's purpose for him in his heart. 00:25:59.35\00:26:01.92 Because he found that purpose, he made a decision, 00:26:01.99\00:26:04.33 "I'm not defiling myself, I've got a purpose... 00:26:04.36\00:26:06.33 what's my purpose? 00:26:06.36\00:26:07.70 My purpose is to be God's instrument right here 00:26:07.73\00:26:10.17 and God is going to use me in a very powerful way. " 00:26:10.20\00:26:12.20 Yvonne: Hmmm... hmmm... Ivor: Yeah. 00:26:12.23\00:26:13.57 James: "I'm going to have this wisdom... 00:26:13.60\00:26:15.04 I'm going to be a channel for God to use. " 00:26:15.07\00:26:16.57 Ivor: You know, it's interesting, 00:26:16.60\00:26:18.11 John would often write, "My children... my children... " 00:26:18.14\00:26:20.51 Paul would write, "My children... " 00:26:20.54\00:26:23.08 and every time he... he won someone to the Lord, 00:26:23.11\00:26:26.05 that was like his child... 00:26:26.11\00:26:27.65 like, "I've begotten you... " 00:26:27.68\00:26:29.42 so, while Daniel had no kids, 00:26:29.45\00:26:31.12 he's going to have a lot of kids in heaven. 00:26:31.15\00:26:32.75 Yvonne: Wow! come on... come on... 00:26:32.79\00:26:34.12 Ivor: So, there's a whole new family tree in heaven. 00:26:34.16\00:26:36.02 You know, and the family tree is... 00:26:36.06\00:26:37.96 your family tree in heaven is, "Who did you win to the Lord?" 00:26:37.99\00:26:41.06 "Yeah, well, you know...
