" 00:03:26.74\00:03:28.74 James: Let's read verse 2 too. Jason: Okay. 00:03:28.77\00:03:30.41 "And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, 00:03:30.44\00:03:34.54 with some of the articles of the house of God, 00:03:34.58\00:03:37.25 which he carried into the land of Shinar 00:03:37.28\00:03:39.95 to the house of his god; 00:03:40.02\00:03:42.28 and he brought the articles into the treasure house of his god. " 00:03:42.32\00:03:46.79 All right, this is big right here, 00:03:46.86\00:03:48.86 we're just going to just pause right here 00:03:48.89\00:03:50.63 and start thinking about one of the main themes of Daniel 00:03:50.66\00:03:56.16 and this first theme we're going to look at 00:03:56.20\00:03:58.40 is a theme of judgment. 00:03:58.43\00:04:00.14 The word "Daniel" actually has meaning. 00:04:00.17\00:04:02.67 The word "Dan" means to judge 00:04:02.70\00:04:05.51 and the word "Daniel" means, "God is Judge. " 00:04:05.54\00:04:08.38 What do you do when your life falls apart? 00:04:08.41\00:04:11.21 You know, what do you do? 00:04:11.25\00:04:12.88 How do you relate to... to God 00:04:12.95\00:04:15.28 or to your religion... 00:04:15.32\00:04:16.69 to whatever God it is that you are following or no God, 00:04:16.72\00:04:18.82 how do you relate to life when everything just falls apart? 00:04:18.85\00:04:21.19 because that's what's happening right here. 00:04:21.22\00:04:22.79 Everything is falling apart... not just for Israel... 00:04:22.82\00:04:26.23 for Judah... we should say, 00:04:26.26\00:04:27.60 because Israel has already been scattered, 00:04:27.63\00:04:28.96 but for Daniel himself 00:04:29.00\00:04:30.47 and can you still trust in God 00:04:30.50\00:04:33.84 and what we see here in these first two verses 00:04:33.87\00:04:36.71 is, we see this introduction that tells us 00:04:36.81\00:04:39.57 that the enemy has come in... 00:04:39.64\00:04:41.18 the enemy of God's people has surrounded them... 00:04:41.21\00:04:44.45 surrounded Jerusalem 00:04:44.48\00:04:45.81 and God... the God that you serve... 00:04:45.85\00:04:47.75 the God that you follow... the God that you believe in 00:04:47.78\00:04:50.39 has gone ahead and delivered you into the enemy's hands. 00:04:50.42\00:04:52.92 Hmmm... 00:04:52.95\00:04:54.29 So, Nebuchadnezzar comes and he besieges Jerusalem 00:04:54.32\00:04:56.12 and it says in verse 2, "And the Lord gave Jehoiakim 00:04:56.16\00:04:59.93 king of Judah into his hand... 00:05:00.00\00:05:01.73 with part of the vessels of the house of his God 00:05:01.76\00:05:06.23 which he carried into the land of Shinar 00:05:06.27\00:05:08.70 and put it in the house of his god. " 00:05:08.74\00:05:10.31 This is a battle of the Gods 00:05:10.34\00:05:11.67 and right away, what we find here 00:05:11.71\00:05:14.08 and one of the main themes in the book of Daniel 00:05:14.11\00:05:16.14 is the theme of the gospel. 00:05:16.18\00:05:17.71 It's a theme of God's willingness to humble Himself 00:05:17.75\00:05:22.18 before the nations 00:05:22.22\00:05:23.99 because back in the day, you know, 00:05:24.02\00:05:26.55 "My God is better than your God... 00:05:26.59\00:05:28.49 and my God is stronger than your God... 00:05:28.52\00:05:29.86 and my religion is better than your religion... 00:05:29.89\00:05:31.26 my religion is the right religion... 00:05:31.29\00:05:32.63 your religion is the wrong religion... I'll show you why. " 00:05:32.66\00:05:34.20 And Nebuchadnezzar says, 00:05:34.30\00:05:35.63 "I'll show you that my god is stronger than your God, 00:05:35.66\00:05:37.50 I'm going to go and I'm going to fight you 00:05:37.57\00:05:39.90 representing your God... 00:05:39.93\00:05:41.40 I'm going to beat you 00:05:41.44\00:05:42.80 because my god is stronger than your God, 00:05:42.84\00:05:44.31 and I'm going to take all of your God's stuff 00:05:44.34\00:05:45.87 and I'm going to put it in my god's temple... 00:05:45.91\00:05:47.28 that's what I'm going to do. 00:05:47.31\00:05:48.64 Yvonne: Hmmm... 00:05:48.68\00:05:50.01 Okay, and of course, we believe God is God 00:05:50.05\00:05:51.58 and there are no other gods, 00:05:51.61\00:05:53.08 but God humbles Himself before the nations, 00:05:53.11\00:05:55.32 He knows what Nebuchadnezzar is thinking, 00:05:55.35\00:05:57.09 He knows what the nations are thinking, 00:05:57.12\00:05:58.82 He humbles Himself and He... 00:05:58.85\00:06:00.96 we think, "Oh, why did God let His people go captive?" 00:06:00.99\00:06:03.56 "Why did God let Himself be taken captive?" 00:06:03.63\00:06:05.56 "Why did God humble Himself before the nations?" 00:06:05.59\00:06:09.10 "Why did God come down to this earth 00:06:09.13\00:06:12.07 in the person of Jesus Christ?" 00:06:12.10\00:06:14.04 "Why did He... 00:06:14.07\00:06:15.64 why didn't He call for those legions of angels?" 00:06:15.67\00:06:17.51 "Why didn't He knock out those Romans?" 00:06:17.54\00:06:19.34 "Why didn't He take care of... of the enemy?" 00:06:19.37\00:06:22.04 "Why didn't He just take them out? 00:06:22.08\00:06:23.48 He can feed 1,000s with just little bit of food, 00:06:23.55\00:06:26.75 He can resurrect the dead, we've got a Messiah now, 00:06:26.82\00:06:29.98 hosanna, He's coming... He's going to get these guys. " 00:06:30.02\00:06:33.46 And what does He do? 00:06:33.49\00:06:34.82 He goes to the cross and He dies. 00:06:34.86\00:06:36.19 So, Daniel chapter 1 introduces us to this theme of the gospel, 00:06:36.22\00:06:41.86 it introduces us to a God 00:06:41.90\00:06:43.30 Who humbles Himself before the nations 00:06:43.37\00:06:45.87 that He may be exalted in His way... 00:06:45.90\00:06:48.40 in His way... not in our way... 00:06:48.44\00:06:50.91 not in Daniel's way but in His way. 00:06:50.94\00:06:53.31 So, as we get into this now, 00:06:53.38\00:06:54.71 we start seeing the theme of the cross, 00:06:54.74\00:06:56.21 we start seeing the theme of humility, 00:06:56.24\00:06:57.71 and humility is all through the book of Daniel... 00:06:57.75\00:07:00.52 I mean, over and over again, 00:07:00.55\00:07:01.92 Daniel now is a... a representative of God, 00:07:01.95\00:07:04.55 Daniel is revealing God, 00:07:04.59\00:07:06.89 and Daniel has this attitude of humility all the way through 00:07:06.96\00:07:09.72 because this is the way that God shows up in the book of Daniel. 00:07:09.76\00:07:12.49 God doesn't show up as a conqueror, 00:07:12.53\00:07:14.40 He tried that once, you know, 00:07:14.43\00:07:16.33 coming through with the people, conquering the nations 00:07:16.36\00:07:18.27 and it didn't work because people got lackadaisy, 00:07:18.30\00:07:20.97 and they got... they got proud and they isolated themselves 00:07:21.00\00:07:25.04 so now God humbles Himself 00:07:25.07\00:07:26.41 because the... the humility of God 00:07:26.44\00:07:28.04 wants to reach out to the nations... 00:07:28.08\00:07:29.81 the cross wants to reach out to the nations. 00:07:29.84\00:07:31.58 God wants Nebuchadnezzar... 00:07:31.61\00:07:33.25 God wants the Babylonians... 00:07:33.28\00:07:34.62 God wants His people 00:07:34.65\00:07:35.98 and so, He humbles Himself before the nations 00:07:36.02\00:07:37.82 so Nebuchadnezzar thinks, "I'm taking your God captive. " 00:07:37.85\00:07:41.12 And God's like, "Well, I'm actually... 00:07:41.19\00:07:42.76 I'm coming as a guest... 00:07:42.79\00:07:44.23 I'm coming to your place as a guest, 00:07:44.33\00:07:46.39 I've got something... " 00:07:46.43\00:07:47.76 you know, Pilate says, "Oh, we're taking out your King. " 00:07:47.80\00:07:49.30 Well, actually, this is God's plan, 00:07:49.33\00:07:51.23 "You will have no power against me 00:07:51.27\00:07:53.10 but... but... but God allowed this to happen. " 00:07:53.13\00:07:55.87 So, God has a purpose here, 00:07:55.94\00:07:57.61 and that's what we want to look at when we get into Daniel. 00:07:57.64\00:07:59.44 What is God's purpose? 00:07:59.51\00:08:00.88 Because this will prepare us for Revelation. 00:08:00.91\00:08:02.48 When everything falls apart in Revelation 13... 00:08:02.51\00:08:04.38 when everything falls apart, God's people can't buy or sell, 00:08:04.41\00:08:06.65 and they're surrounded by the enemy, 00:08:06.72\00:08:08.15 and it seems like God's giving them over... 00:08:08.18\00:08:09.78 what is it that God's purpose is for us... for God's people 00:08:09.82\00:08:13.49 when we get into that last-day crisis? 00:08:13.56\00:08:15.32 Yvonne: Hmmm... 00:08:15.39\00:08:16.73 Ivor: And we'll... just in connection with that, 00:08:16.76\00:08:21.36 God has people in Babylon... end-time context 00:08:21.40\00:08:25.80 that He is going to use in a special way 00:08:25.83\00:08:30.81 just as He used Daniel and his three friends 00:08:30.84\00:08:35.71 in a special way in Babylon. 00:08:35.74\00:08:38.15 There is a... you'll find that there's a parallel 00:08:38.18\00:08:42.32 between what we're going to see in Daniel chapter 1... 00:08:42.35\00:08:45.89 even just these two verses 00:08:45.92\00:08:47.36 and then, all the way through the book of Daniel 00:08:47.39\00:08:49.52 not only is there the theme of the gospel, 00:08:49.56\00:08:52.89 and by-the-way, Christ... 00:08:52.96\00:08:55.03 we're going to see Christ is all in the book of Daniel. 00:08:55.06\00:08:58.93 Christ is in Daniel chapter 1, He's in Daniel chapter 2, 00:08:59.00\00:09:02.80 He's in Daniel chapter 3, 00:09:02.87\00:09:04.37 He's in Daniel chapter 4, 00:09:04.44\00:09:05.91 in some really, really like, mind-blowing... 00:09:05.94\00:09:09.54 just amazing off-the-chain... 00:09:09.58\00:09:11.51 off-the-wall ways, right? 00:09:11.55\00:09:12.88 Yvonne: Love it. 00:09:12.91\00:09:14.25 But the book of Daniel is going to... 00:09:14.32\00:09:16.42 the book of Daniel is... is almost like a... 00:09:16.45\00:09:19.62 a... a pattern that shows us 00:09:19.65\00:09:21.99 what is going to happen at the end of time. 00:09:22.02\00:09:23.36 All: Hmmm... 00:09:23.43\00:09:24.76 And so, as we study the book of Daniel, 00:09:24.79\00:09:26.63 we're going to be seeing the theme of judgment, 00:09:26.70\00:09:28.03 we're going to be seeing the theme of end-time events, 00:09:28.06\00:09:30.17 we're going to be seeing the theme of Christ and the gospel, 00:09:30.20\00:09:34.04 and it's... by-the-way, you know, 00:09:34.07\00:09:38.84 we kind of talked about this just before the Program, 00:09:38.87\00:09:41.24 the... the most difficult chapter in... 00:09:41.28\00:09:45.45 I would say, the Bible is Daniel chapter 11. 00:09:45.48\00:09:50.12 James and Yvonne: Hmmm... 00:09:50.19\00:09:51.52 That is the one that there is the most controversy... 00:09:51.55\00:09:54.06 and so, as we go through this Study, 00:09:54.09\00:09:56.73 we're actually going to be setting the foundation 00:09:56.76\00:10:00.30 to help you guys, you know, 00:10:00.33\00:10:02.46 you guys are our students, and thus, by extension 00:10:02.50\00:10:06.00 everyone out there that's watching... 00:10:06.03\00:10:08.04 but you are our video students 00:10:08.07\00:10:11.74 so we're going to be trying to prepare you to understand 00:10:11.77\00:10:15.04 Daniel 11 from Daniel 1 verse 1. 00:10:15.08\00:10:20.02 We're just going to be setting the foundation, 00:10:20.05\00:10:21.55 we're going to be following the theme 00:10:21.58\00:10:22.92 so that as we go through and we see judgment 00:10:22.95\00:10:25.82 and we see sanctuaries being cleansed 00:10:25.89\00:10:28.32 and we see little horns rising into power 00:10:28.36\00:10:30.76 and all these different things, it's going to prepare you 00:10:30.83\00:10:33.90 so that, by the time we get to Daniel 11, 00:10:33.93\00:10:35.93 you're not going to be like, "Well, wait a minute... " 00:10:35.96\00:10:38.30 you're... hopefully, if we do our job well, 00:10:38.37\00:10:41.04 you'll be like, "Oh, oh oh oh, ho... I get it!" 00:10:41.07\00:10:46.88 Students: Yes, yes, yes. 00:10:46.91\00:10:48.24 So, that's the plan. 00:10:48.28\00:10:49.61 Yvonne: Good. James: Amen. 00:10:49.64\00:10:50.98 Jason: Hopefully, we'll do that without any pop quizzes. 00:10:51.01\00:10:52.35 Ivor: Yes. 00:10:52.38\00:10:54.15 Laughter. 00:10:54.22\00:10:56.08 I think we should probably, you know, 00:10:56.12\00:11:01.09 just do an Overview of all the chapters of Daniel, 00:11:01.12\00:11:05.19 so, and... and... I'm going to share 00:11:05.26\00:11:08.53 that there is a message in this Overview 00:11:08.56\00:11:11.80 and especially an end-time message 00:11:11.83\00:11:14.24 that we'll see as we go through these chapters, 00:11:14.27\00:11:17.51 so, beginning with Daniel chapter 1 00:11:17.54\00:11:19.37 and we're just summarizing here, 00:11:19.41\00:11:21.14 so, Daniel chapter 1... what is that about? 00:11:21.18\00:11:23.48 James: So... so we begin with this picture, 00:11:23.55\00:11:25.71 I believe, we begin with this picture of the cross, 00:11:25.78\00:11:27.85 we begin with this picture of God 00:11:27.92\00:11:29.52 humbling Himself before the nations 00:11:29.55\00:11:31.02 so that He can be lifted up there. 00:11:31.05\00:11:32.49 We're going to see that in Daniel chapter 2, 00:11:32.52\00:11:34.69 Daniel chapter 1 begins by introducing us 00:11:34.72\00:11:37.13 to the way that God works through humility. 00:11:37.16\00:11:39.49 So, it's really significant 00:11:39.53\00:11:42.03 that Nebuchadnezzar is mentioned here 00:11:42.06\00:11:44.27 as taking the vessels of the house of Judah's God... 00:11:44.30\00:11:48.34 Daniel's God... 00:11:48.37\00:11:50.11 into the house of his god. 00:11:50.14\00:11:51.71 It's really interesting here 00:11:51.74\00:11:53.81 that the Lord gave Judah into his hands... 00:11:53.88\00:11:56.61 God gave Jesus Christ into the hands of Pilate... 00:11:56.68\00:11:59.88 into the hands of the enemies. 00:11:59.95\00:12:01.28 Ivor: But just let me add here that you will see that 00:12:01.32\00:12:04.82 in the book of Daniel, Daniel has like... 00:12:04.85\00:12:07.86 he has no recorded sin... 00:12:07.89\00:12:09.22 it's very interesting that Daniel is blameless 00:12:09.26\00:12:13.73 before his enemies 00:12:13.80\00:12:16.40 and yet, he was taken captive with his people... 00:12:16.43\00:12:20.04 he came to a strange land with his people 00:12:20.07\00:12:23.91 who were guilty. 00:12:23.94\00:12:25.27 Right? you almost wonder, 00:12:25.31\00:12:26.88 "Well... if like... Daniel was a good person... 00:12:26.91\00:12:31.78 the three Hebrews... good... 00:12:31.81\00:12:33.15 how did they end up in captivity?" 00:12:33.18\00:12:34.62 And focusing in on Daniel 00:12:34.65\00:12:36.52 you see this picture of the gospel 00:12:36.55\00:12:38.75 of Jesus who came to this earth as a prisoner, if you will, 00:12:38.79\00:12:45.29 with His brothers and sisters 00:12:45.36\00:12:47.73 even though He was not guilty of sin. 00:12:47.76\00:12:49.20 James: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:12:49.23\00:12:50.87 Ivor: So, you see that picture with the gospel 00:12:50.90\00:12:52.23 right there in Daniel chapter 1, 00:12:52.27\00:12:53.60 through the person of Daniel himself. 00:12:53.64\00:12:55.47 Yvonne: Hmmm... hmmm... a type of Christ. 00:12:55.50\00:12:57.11 Ivor: A type of Christ. 00:12:57.14\00:12:58.47 James: And the word itself, Daniel... God is judge... 00:12:58.51\00:13:01.64 "Dan" means to judge... "El" God... God is judge. 00:13:01.68\00:13:05.05 So, you have this theme of judgment 00:13:05.08\00:13:07.22 and this is the way Christ related to the Pharisees 00:13:07.25\00:13:09.92 who questioned Him... the religious leaders... 00:13:09.95\00:13:11.45 "I do God's will... God is my judge... 00:13:11.49\00:13:13.79 I don't do what I want to do, I do what God wants to do... " 00:13:13.86\00:13:16.62 and so, Daniel is cooperating. 00:13:16.66\00:13:18.43 You can imagine, before Daniel's time, 00:13:18.46\00:13:21.86 Isaiah wrote about this experience, 00:13:21.90\00:13:25.27 the very experience that Daniel is going through... 00:13:25.30\00:13:27.64 Isaiah writes about it 00:13:27.67\00:13:29.00 and you can imagine because Daniel's just a kid, 00:13:29.04\00:13:30.71 when he goes to Babylon, he's just a teenager, 00:13:30.74\00:13:32.47 15- 16-years old... 00:13:32.54\00:13:33.88 he's just a young guy 00:13:33.91\00:13:35.24 and you can imagine that Daniel's parents were like, 00:13:35.28\00:13:37.65 "Okay, we need to get into Isaiah right now, Kids, 00:13:37.68\00:13:40.35 because you know this is... this is coming... 00:13:40.42\00:13:42.22 we don't know when it's coming but this is coming... " 00:13:42.25\00:13:44.62 we got to get you ready and so, what God is doing is, 00:13:44.65\00:13:46.99 He's preparing His people. 00:13:47.06\00:13:48.69 As you get into the book of Daniel 00:13:48.72\00:13:50.33 there's a lot of history that goes before Daniel, 00:13:50.36\00:13:52.56 and we'll look at that, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel... 00:13:52.63\00:13:55.36 Jeremiah and Ezekiel are contemporaries with Daniel, 00:13:55.43\00:13:57.67 they're alive... 00:13:57.70\00:13:59.03 they're speaking into the crisis as it's happening, 00:13:59.07\00:14:01.74 but Isaiah has prophesied... 00:14:01.77\00:14:03.10 he has predicted about this crisis. 00:14:03.14\00:14:06.11 Isaiah is also the Messianic book. 00:14:06.14\00:14:09.11 It's all about Christ, 00:14:09.18\00:14:10.65 it's all about the sacrifice He makes 00:14:10.75\00:14:12.15 so, as Daniel is reading Isaiah, 00:14:12.18\00:14:13.62 he's reading about this Babylonian captivity, 00:14:13.65\00:14:15.42 all of a sudden he comes to Isaiah 53, 00:14:15.45\00:14:18.25 Whoa! "All we like sheep have gone astray; 00:14:18.29\00:14:20.46 we have turned everyone to his own way; 00:14:20.49\00:14:22.56 and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. " 00:14:22.59\00:14:26.16 He was like a lamb before the shearers... 00:14:26.19\00:14:28.83 He was dumb... He didn't speak... He didn't... 00:14:28.86\00:14:31.07 He didn't... He submitted... 00:14:31.10\00:14:32.60 He surrendered to God's will 00:14:32.63\00:14:34.14 and this is where Daniel is getting his strength. 00:14:34.17\00:14:36.34 You know, and it's for us. 00:14:36.37\00:14:38.04 How hard is it to surrender to God's will? 00:14:38.07\00:14:40.38 Well, it's particularly difficult if we don't... 00:14:40.41\00:14:44.31 if we're not sure of what God's will is. 00:14:44.35\00:14:46.18 Once we have that "Ah Ha moment... " 00:14:46.21\00:14:47.95 "Oh, this is God's will, God is directing me in this. " 00:14:47.98\00:14:50.89 Once we have that "Ah ha moment" 00:14:50.92\00:14:52.32 we're like, "Okay, I can surrender this... " 00:14:52.35\00:14:54.16 because we can surrender to... to the... 00:14:54.19\00:14:55.89 to the... to the hand of someone we know is on our side 00:14:55.92\00:14:59.09 and not only that, but is with us in the fire 00:14:59.13\00:15:01.53 and with us in the water 00:15:01.56\00:15:02.90 which is another theme that we see 00:15:02.93\00:15:04.33 through Daniel and Revelation. 00:15:04.40\00:15:05.73 In Daniel... He's with us in the fire, 00:15:05.77\00:15:07.57 in Revelation... through the water. 00:15:07.64\00:15:09.37 You know, they sing a song of Moses and the Lamb 00:15:09.40\00:15:11.71 Yvonne: Isaiah 43:1. 00:15:11.74\00:15:13.07 Yes, and you've got... and so you've got this picture.. 00:15:13.11\00:15:16.11 this beautiful picture of God's people in Revelation 00:15:16.14\00:15:19.25 standing on the Sea of Glass mingled with fire 00:15:19.28\00:15:21.82 and singing the song of Moses and the Lamb 00:15:21.85\00:15:23.99 because they've gone through that trial... 00:15:24.02\00:15:25.85 they've gone through that experience, 00:15:25.89\00:15:27.26 they're with God in the fire... 00:15:27.29\00:15:28.62 they're with God in the water 00:15:28.66\00:15:29.99 and Daniel is... that's what his experience is right here, 00:15:30.03\00:15:31.76 this is judgment, 00:15:31.79\00:15:33.13 so, one of the themes that we have in Daniel chapter 1, 00:15:33.16\00:15:35.26 you bring up another one, Ivor, 00:15:35.30\00:15:36.97 whatever you got here is judgment. 00:15:37.00\00:15:38.53 Ivor: Yeah. 00:15:38.57\00:15:39.90 James: God is allowing judgment to come upon His people 00:15:39.93\00:15:41.67 for being disobedient... for not... 00:15:41.70\00:15:45.97 and here's the disobedience 00:15:46.01\00:15:47.38 because sometimes we're thinking, 00:15:47.41\00:15:48.74 "What disobedience?" 00:15:48.78\00:15:50.11 Like they weren't keeping the Sabbath? 00:15:50.15\00:15:51.48 Yeah, probably they were worshipping idols... 00:15:51.51\00:15:52.85 well probably... obviously... 00:15:52.88\00:15:54.22 but what was the major disobedience? 00:15:54.25\00:15:55.58 Disobeying God in disregarding His Commandments 00:15:55.62\00:16:00.26 led them to disregard people... the nations. 00:16:00.29\00:16:04.36 The reason God put them on the earth 00:16:04.39\00:16:06.83 to make them a peculiar people, 00:16:06.90\00:16:08.23 is not so they could go to heaven by themselves, 00:16:08.26\00:16:10.27 and who cares about all the rest of those heathen, right? 00:16:10.30\00:16:12.73 The reason why God has us on this earth 00:16:12.77\00:16:15.07 is to witness... 00:16:15.10\00:16:17.01 to testify of Jesus and His love for everyone 00:16:17.11\00:16:20.08 and they had forgotten all about that 00:16:20.11\00:16:21.64 and so, as they are making alliances and confederacies 00:16:21.68\00:16:25.65 with all the other nations and compromising, 00:16:25.68\00:16:27.75 they're saying, "We don't care about you, 00:16:27.78\00:16:30.02 we don't care about the light and the love 00:16:30.09\00:16:32.25 that God has given us to give to you, 00:16:32.32\00:16:33.79 we don't care about that, 00:16:33.86\00:16:35.19 what we care about is 'us' and how you can benefit us 00:16:35.22\00:16:37.16 and you can help us and things you can do for us. " 00:16:37.23\00:16:39.46 And so, God's got to break all this up, 00:16:39.49\00:16:41.36 got to bring them down because He wants Nebuchadnezzar, 00:16:41.40\00:16:44.83 He wants the Babylonians... 00:16:44.87\00:16:46.20 He's bringing judgment in chapter one 00:16:46.23\00:16:47.57 because He wants His emissaries... His ambassadors... 00:16:47.64\00:16:50.01 to go in and to reach out to these people 00:16:50.04\00:16:52.54 and show them Who He is. Yvonne: Hmmm... 00:16:52.57\00:16:55.04 Ivor: So, just to add to that, Daniel chapter 1 00:16:55.11\00:16:59.48 is where Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego 00:16:59.51\00:17:03.89 are invited to eat the king's meat and drink his wine 00:17:03.92\00:17:09.26 and obviously they refuse. 00:17:09.29\00:17:11.83 So, I want you to think about this, like, 00:17:11.86\00:17:16.23 "What... what... who was the king?" 00:17:16.26\00:17:19.57 Yvonne: Nebuchadnezzar. 00:17:19.60\00:17:21.47 Ivor: Nebuchadnezzar... and he was king of... 00:17:21.50\00:17:23.04 Yvonne: Babylon. 00:17:23.07\00:17:24.41 Ivor: Babylon... so, what you have in Daniel chapter 1 00:17:24.44\00:17:27.81 is that the kingdom of Babylon is trying to force God's people 00:17:27.88\00:17:34.32 to drink the wine of Babylon. 00:17:34.35\00:17:37.72 Yvonne: Ooooh. James: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:17:37.75\00:17:39.09 Yvonne: Ooooh... Ivor: And, what do they do? 00:17:39.12\00:17:41.02 they refuse 00:17:41.06\00:17:42.46 and as a result of refusing to partake of the wine of Babylon, 00:17:42.49\00:17:46.36 they are ten times wiser 00:17:46.39\00:17:49.56 so, automatically, right there in Daniel chapter 1 00:17:49.60\00:17:52.77 guess what we have? 00:17:52.80\00:17:54.14 We have this foreshadow of an end-time scenario 00:17:54.17\00:17:58.97 in which there will be a group of people 00:17:59.01\00:18:00.88 who... while the wine of Babylon... 00:18:00.91\00:18:05.05 or Babylon is trying to enforce drinking its wine, 00:18:05.08\00:18:08.12 they're going to say, "No, we're not going to do that" 00:18:08.15\00:18:11.12 and those people are going to be wiser... 00:18:11.19\00:18:14.82 think about the parable of the wise and foolish virgins, 00:18:14.86\00:18:17.79 or you know, just... at the end of time, 00:18:17.83\00:18:20.00 the book of Daniel tells us that 00:18:20.03\00:18:21.90 those that be wise 00:18:21.93\00:18:24.47 shall shine as the brightness of the firmament. 00:18:24.50\00:18:26.60 So, Man, how do we... 00:18:26.63\00:18:28.14 how do we be among that people that are wise? 00:18:28.17\00:18:33.04 Well, part of it is: 00:18:33.07\00:18:34.74 Refusing the wine of Babylon, right? 00:18:34.78\00:18:37.35 And we refuse the wine of Babylon 00:18:37.38\00:18:40.02 because... not out of a, you know, 00:18:40.05\00:18:42.58 out of a sense of self-righteousness 00:18:42.62\00:18:45.09 but because we are to be reflecting the character 00:18:45.12\00:18:50.06 and person of Jesus Christ. 00:18:50.13\00:18:51.49 Yvonne: Hmmm... 00:18:51.53\00:18:52.86 James: Which is in His Ten Commandments by the way. 00:18:52.89\00:18:54.43 Ivor: Absolutely. James: Ten times wiser. 00:18:54.46\00:18:55.96 So, I just want you to think about this for a moment, 00:18:56.00\00:18:58.40 the message in Daniel chapter 1, 00:18:58.43\00:19:00.14 I'm going to actually give you a... 00:19:00.17\00:19:01.80 share a whole message but it's coming in parts. 00:19:01.84\00:19:05.04 So, just think, Daniel 1, and think these words, 00:19:05.07\00:19:08.28 at the end of time, there will be a people 00:19:08.31\00:19:11.51 who avoid the wine of Babylon. 00:19:11.58\00:19:14.05 Those people will be ten times wiser. 00:19:14.12\00:19:17.32 James: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:19:17.39\00:19:18.72 Right? and the message just pauses right there 00:19:18.75\00:19:21.26 because we're only in Daniel chapter 1. 00:19:21.29\00:19:22.89 Daniel chapter 2 is going to add to that message. 00:19:22.92\00:19:27.03 So, we'll actually see a message 00:19:27.10\00:19:29.63 unfolding through all the chapters of Daniel 00:19:29.66\00:19:32.40 specifically directed to God's end-time people. 00:19:32.43\00:19:35.54 James: Hmmm... hmmm... Yvonne: Wow! 00:19:35.57\00:19:36.91 Ivor: Right, those who, you know, fear God... 00:19:36.94\00:19:40.31 keep His Commandments... 00:19:40.38\00:19:41.71 who have Jesus in their hearts... 00:19:41.74\00:19:43.08 this is His message of encouragement saying, 00:19:43.11\00:19:45.48 "Hey, listen, just like Isaiah wrote about... 00:19:45.55\00:19:48.25 'Hey Daniel, I want you to know 00:19:48.28\00:19:50.12 these are the things that are going to happen... '" 00:19:50.19\00:19:51.52 the book of Daniel was written for us 00:19:51.55\00:19:54.49 to let us know, "Hey, I'm going before you, 00:19:54.52\00:19:56.59 I really know what's going to happen 00:19:56.66\00:19:58.66 and I'm showing you through the chapters of this book 00:19:58.69\00:20:02.33 what is coming. " 00:20:02.36\00:20:03.70 James: Hmmm... Yvonne: Hmmm... 00:20:03.77\00:20:05.10 James: All right, Daniel chapter 2... 00:20:05.13\00:20:06.47 just a couple of verses 00:20:06.50\00:20:08.34 that I thought would be good for us to look at, 00:20:08.37\00:20:10.11 in Philippians... Jason, can you read these verses for us? 00:20:10.14\00:20:15.91 Philippians chapter 2... 00:20:15.94\00:20:17.58 and by the way, we're going to the New Testament 00:20:17.65\00:20:20.92 and we're going to... 00:20:20.95\00:20:22.95 we're going to see how the themes of the gospel... 00:20:22.98\00:20:26.76 themes of the New Testament 00:20:26.86\00:20:28.19 are woven throughout the book of Daniel 00:20:28.22\00:20:29.86 and throughout the Old Testament. 00:20:29.89\00:20:31.23 Sometimes Folks think, "Oh, the Old Testament is old 00:20:31.26\00:20:33.40 that's the... you know, that's the old stuff... 00:20:33.43\00:20:35.76 and the New Testament... that's where the gospel is. " 00:20:35.80\00:20:37.37 The Old Testament... 00:20:37.40\00:20:38.83 most of the New Testament... 00:20:38.87\00:20:41.14 or I shouldn't say, "Most of it... " 00:20:41.17\00:20:42.50 a lot of the New Testament is Old Testament quoted. 00:20:42.54\00:20:44.01 Paul is bringing out... 00:20:44.04\00:20:45.47 John is bringing out... 00:20:45.51\00:20:46.91 Luke is bringing out the themes of the gospel... 00:20:46.98\00:20:49.91 the gospel is bringing out... 00:20:49.94\00:20:51.28 the themes of the gospel 00:20:51.31\00:20:52.65 that are found in the Old Testament... 00:20:52.68\00:20:54.22 but we couldn't see... the Jews couldn't see it 00:20:54.25\00:20:56.05 and so, the bad thing about the Old Testament 00:20:56.12\00:20:57.89 is not that the gospel isn't there... 00:20:57.92\00:20:59.25 the bad thing about the Old Testament is 00:20:59.29\00:21:00.76 that we're not looking for the gospel there 00:21:00.79\00:21:02.42 and so, we're not finding the gospel there. 00:21:02.46\00:21:03.83 Yvonne: Oh, it's good. 00:21:03.86\00:21:05.19 James: But as we go into Daniel chapter 2 now, 00:21:05.23\00:21:07.70 we're going to see this very theme 00:21:07.73\00:21:09.26 that Jason is going to read to us about here... 00:21:09.30\00:21:11.97 just think about this as we get into Daniel 2, 00:21:12.00\00:21:14.64 Jason, read for us if you would please, 00:21:14.67\00:21:16.81 Philippians 2 verses 5 and go all the way down to verse 11. 00:21:16.91\00:21:21.81 Jason: Okay, "Let this mind be in you 00:21:21.84\00:21:25.48 which was also in Christ Jesus, 00:21:25.55\00:21:27.12 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery 00:21:27.15\00:21:30.52 to be equal with God, 00:21:30.59\00:21:32.02 but made Himself of no reputation, 00:21:32.05\00:21:34.32 taking the form of a bondservant, 00:21:34.39\00:21:36.56 and coming in the likeness of men. 00:21:36.59\00:21:38.69 And being found in appearance as a man, 00:21:38.73\00:21:41.66 He humbled Himself and became obedient 00:21:41.70\00:21:44.60 to the point of death, 00:21:44.63\00:21:46.37 even the death of the cross. 00:21:46.40\00:21:48.27 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him 00:21:48.30\00:21:52.11 and given Him the name which is above every name, 00:21:52.14\00:21:55.38 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, 00:21:55.41\00:21:58.61 of those in heaven, and of those on earth, 00:21:58.65\00:22:01.65 and of those under the earth, 00:22:01.68\00:22:03.25 and that every tongue should confess 00:22:03.28\00:22:05.75 that Jesus Christ is Lord, 00:22:05.79\00:22:07.36 to the glory of God the Father. " 00:22:07.39\00:22:09.09 James: All right, so, in these verses, 00:22:09.12\00:22:10.63 I just want to summarize them, 00:22:10.66\00:22:11.99 you've got a "humbling" of God in the person of Jesus, 00:22:12.03\00:22:15.23 and then you've got an "exalting" of God 00:22:15.26\00:22:16.67 before the nations, 00:22:16.70\00:22:18.03 and all the nations are going to just, 00:22:18.07\00:22:20.07 "Whoa! this is the God of Gods... " 00:22:20.14\00:22:22.24 so now, that's what we see in Daniel 2. 00:22:22.27\00:22:24.37 In Daniel 1, God humbles Himself before the nations, 00:22:24.41\00:22:27.38 He allows His people to go captive... 00:22:27.41\00:22:29.38 He allows the vessels of His house to be taken to the 00:22:29.41\00:22:31.48 vessels of the gods of Babylon. 00:22:31.51\00:22:33.21 He's humbling Himself before the nations. 00:22:33.25\00:22:35.82 His name... and you'll see this in Daniel 9, 00:22:35.85\00:22:38.35 when Daniel is praying he's saying, 00:22:38.39\00:22:39.72 "God, we're praying for You and for Your sake 00:22:39.75\00:22:42.06 and for Your sanctuary that's desolate... 00:22:42.09\00:22:44.56 Your name is... " 00:22:44.59\00:22:45.93 Moses... same thing... 00:22:45.96\00:22:47.30 "Don't blot out Your people... don't destroy Your people 00:22:47.33\00:22:49.23 because Your name before the heathen... 00:22:49.26\00:22:50.87 Your name will be misrepresented. " 00:22:50.90\00:22:52.37 It's all about God's character in Daniel chapter 1, 00:22:52.40\00:22:56.44 he's humbling himself 00:22:56.47\00:22:57.81 but in Daniel chapter 2, 00:22:57.84\00:22:59.17 He is exalted... He gives Nebuchadnezzar a dream in it, 00:22:59.24\00:23:03.35 can't... can't figure it out. 00:23:03.38\00:23:04.71 None of the wise men can figure it out. 00:23:04.75\00:23:06.08 Nobody in the kingdom of Babylon can figure this out 00:23:06.11\00:23:08.22 except for Daniel and his three friends 00:23:08.25\00:23:10.79 and how they do it? Through prayer 00:23:10.82\00:23:12.89 and as they get an answer from God, 00:23:12.92\00:23:15.16 and they give Nebuchadnezzar the dream 00:23:15.19\00:23:17.43 and the interpretation of it, 00:23:17.46\00:23:18.79 Nebuchadnezzar goes, "Wow! there is no God like your God. " 00:23:18.83\00:23:21.50 "Wait a minute... you just said 00:23:21.53\00:23:22.86 that my god is stronger than your God 00:23:22.90\00:23:25.03 and you just took the vessels of my God into your house 00:23:25.07\00:23:27.44 and you put them in... " 00:23:27.47\00:23:28.80 "There is nobody like your God, Daniel, 00:23:28.84\00:23:30.54 your God is a God of Gods, your God is the King of kings. " 00:23:30.61\00:23:32.94 You see the transition that's taking place right there? 00:23:32.97\00:23:35.28 That's Philippians chapter 2 00:23:35.31\00:23:37.05 verses 5 all the way through 10... 00:23:37.08\00:23:38.68 transition theme. 00:23:38.71\00:23:40.22 Ivor: So, let's add to that again 00:23:40.25\00:23:42.52 that the fact that in Daniel 2, what you have is, 00:23:42.55\00:23:47.46 Nebuchadnezzar having this dream 00:23:47.49\00:23:49.02 and we'll get into the details of the dream in... 00:23:49.06\00:23:52.69 in further studies 00:23:52.76\00:23:54.70 but, the basic element of this dream is that 00:23:54.73\00:23:57.90 Nebuchadnezzar's kingdom... 00:23:57.93\00:23:59.97 Daniel actually tells him, 00:24:00.04\00:24:01.84 "Nebuchadnezzar, your kingdom is going to fall. " 00:24:01.87\00:24:05.31 All: Hmmm... 00:24:05.34\00:24:06.68 So, the wise men around Nebuchadnezzar 00:24:06.71\00:24:08.81 could not understand this message. 00:24:08.88\00:24:11.05 They couldn't understand the dream... the prophetic dream, 00:24:11.08\00:24:13.85 they could not... they did not have prophetic insight. 00:24:13.92\00:24:16.62 Only Daniel and his friends were able to preach this message 00:24:16.69\00:24:22.79 that Babylon is going to fall. 00:24:22.82\00:24:26.16 So, put Daniel one and two together. 00:24:26.19\00:24:27.53 At the end of time, there will be a people 00:24:27.60\00:24:29.83 who will avoid the wine of Babylon. 00:24:29.86\00:24:31.67 As a result, they will be ten times wiser. 00:24:31.70\00:24:34.47 They will be the ones 00:24:34.54\00:24:36.64 that are able to preach the message 00:24:36.71\00:24:39.14 that Babylon will fall. 00:24:39.17\00:24:42.58 James: Hmmm... hmmm... Yvonne: Wow! 00:24:42.61\00:24:44.35 Ivor: Right, so, that's Daniel 1 and 2 put together 00:24:44.38\00:24:47.12 and what we're seeing is this theme of the gospel 00:24:47.15\00:24:49.78 following... I mean, 00:24:49.85\00:24:51.52 paralleling this theme of 00:24:51.55\00:24:53.19 end-time events for God's people 00:24:53.22\00:24:55.32 and again, this goes all the way through the book of Daniel 00:24:55.36\00:24:57.86 so, every chapter actually adds to that... 00:24:57.89\00:25:02.06 that sentence or that message 00:25:02.10\00:25:03.97 so, now we know, "Okay, wow! 00:25:04.00\00:25:05.80 I'm encouraged because guess what? 00:25:05.83\00:25:07.54 At the end of time, there is going to be a people 00:25:07.57\00:25:09.67 who do stand strong... who do avoid the wine of Babylon 00:25:09.70\00:25:12.81 and because of that, 00:25:12.84\00:25:14.48 God is going to bless them with special wisdom 00:25:14.51\00:25:17.35 and insight... 00:25:17.38\00:25:18.75 and when everybody else around is not understanding 00:25:18.78\00:25:21.05 the prophetic message... 00:25:21.12\00:25:22.45 'What does this prophecy... what does... 00:25:22.48\00:25:24.02 what does this mean? " 00:27:01.15\00:27:02.68 We'll see that a little bit more 00:27:02.75\00:27:04.09 as we get into the first verse here 00:27:04.12\00:27:06.89 and how we're tempted to put our reliance on the arm of flesh... 00:27:06.96\00:27:10.03 different ways that we try to depend on man 00:27:10.13\00:27:14.10 instead of depending on God 00:27:14.13\00:27:15.63 and what we see here then is, 00:27:15.70\00:27:17.17 God humbling Himself before the nations 00:27:17.20\00:27:18.87 and then, Daniel chapter 2, 00:27:18.90\00:27:21.07 He's exalted before the nations through this dream, 00:27:21.14\00:27:23.71 and as the dream comes forth, Nebuchadnezzar goes, "Whoa... " 00:27:23.74\00:27:26.78 Nebuchadnezzar is the first person 00:27:26.81\00:27:28.28 to attend a Daniel Seminar. 00:27:28.31\00:27:30.15 Jason: Hmmm... Yvonne: Laughing... 00:27:30.18\00:27:31.65 James: He says... but we're always like, "Okay... 00:27:31.68\00:27:33.21 preach it, Daniel, tell me what's it all about... " 00:27:33.25\00:27:34.72 and after he's done, Nebuchadnezzar says, 00:27:34.75\00:27:36.89 "I want to join your church, 00:27:36.92\00:27:38.25 I want to be part of that Movement. " 00:27:38.29\00:27:39.62 So, this is a beautiful picture 00:27:39.65\00:27:40.99 that we're going to see right here, 00:27:41.02\00:27:42.36 and I believe God has given us a good start... 00:27:42.39\00:27:44.99 a good beginning 00:27:45.03\00:27:46.36 but our time is up... I mean, it just went so fast... 00:27:46.39\00:27:47.93 we're... we're just done 00:27:47.96\00:27:49.53 so, I know we've got to tell our Viewers 00:27:49.56\00:27:52.43 how they can get a hold of us, this... that and the other, 00:27:52.47\00:27:54.14 we'll have to do that in our next Program 00:27:54.24\00:27:55.57 because we're finished, right? 00:27:55.60\00:27:57.24 Ivor: Yeah, that's right. 00:27:57.31\00:27:58.64
