And we're back. 00:00:14.24\00:00:15.58 And we're talking about NY13 or this monumental project 00:00:15.61\00:00:19.55 that's going to focus on the metro New York area 00:00:19.58\00:00:22.32 in 2013. 00:00:22.35\00:00:24.45 Now, here's something I bet you didn't know 00:00:24.49\00:00:25.95 about New York City. 00:00:25.99\00:00:27.36 Did you realize that Washington DC 00:00:27.39\00:00:29.39 was not actually the first capital of America? 00:00:29.42\00:00:32.09 No, it was in 1789 00:00:32.13\00:00:34.30 that George Washington took his oath as president 00:00:34.33\00:00:37.33 on the balcony at Federal Hall in New York City. 00:00:37.37\00:00:40.67 So it was the place, 00:00:40.70\00:00:42.04 a place where America got a real start, 00:00:42.07\00:00:44.31 and we're praying, 00:00:44.34\00:00:45.67 it'll be a place where the wrap up of the work 00:00:45.71\00:00:47.71 will get a real impetus and a real start. 00:00:47.74\00:00:50.25 Now I'm back with a panel, 00:00:50.28\00:00:52.21 and you'll notice that my panel has shifted somewhat. 00:00:52.25\00:00:55.52 While Christine was singing, we changed some seats around, 00:00:55.55\00:00:58.29 and now I have a very esteemed panel of conference 00:00:58.32\00:01:01.09 and union presidents with me. 00:01:01.12\00:01:03.12 I've got Frank Tochterman 00:01:03.16\00:01:04.49 from the Southern New England Conference. 00:01:04.53\00:01:07.06 I'm going to get these wrong. 00:01:07.10\00:01:08.43 You know I'm going to get them wrong 00:01:08.46\00:01:09.80 because I'm nervous about getting them right. 00:01:09.83\00:01:11.63 Trevor Baker from New England. 00:01:11.67\00:01:13.20 Northeastern. 00:01:13.23\00:01:14.57 No, Northeastern, I knew it was an NE, 00:01:14.60\00:01:15.94 Northeastern. 00:01:15.97\00:01:17.31 Elder Earl G. Almost, right on the border. 00:03:43.75\00:03:47.22 Elder Cortes, New Jersey? 00:03:47.26\00:03:48.96 New Jersey is this side of the river. 00:03:48.99\00:03:51.56 And we have over 8 million inhabitants, 00:03:51.59\00:03:56.46 very close to New York. 00:03:56.50\00:03:59.10 We belong to the Columbia Union. 00:03:59.13\00:04:01.60 We already passed the 14,000 members 00:04:01.64\00:04:03.74 going to 15,000, 00:04:03.77\00:04:05.34 and we are ready for the mission 00:04:05.37\00:04:07.68 together with our work, 00:04:07.71\00:04:09.04 Seattle Conference, Allegany. 00:04:09.08\00:04:10.71 Elder Cheatham? 00:04:10.75\00:04:12.11 We cover the vast area in the Northeast. 00:04:12.15\00:04:15.98 Most of the cities that we cover 00:04:16.02\00:04:18.69 are in the states of New Jersey, of course, 00:04:18.72\00:04:22.26 but also in Pennsylvania, in Maryland, 00:04:22.29\00:04:25.33 and Virginia, West Virginia, and Delaware. 00:04:25.36\00:04:27.90 So we have a large area, 00:04:27.93\00:04:29.36 but our target populations 00:04:29.40\00:04:31.37 are primarily in the heart of the urban and inner city, 00:04:31.40\00:04:34.54 the hardcore urban inner city structure. 00:04:34.57\00:04:38.61 And we are happy to have a number of churches 00:04:38.64\00:04:43.18 on the western side of the Hudson River. 00:04:43.21\00:04:47.48 And that's our targeted area 00:04:47.52\00:04:49.02 for this campaign of New York 13. 00:04:49.05\00:04:52.39 Great stuff. 00:04:52.42\00:04:53.76 Now we've got a lot of territory 00:04:53.79\00:04:55.12 and only a few minutes, 00:04:55.16\00:04:56.49 but if you guys could tell me a little bit 00:04:56.52\00:04:59.03 about what's going on in the field, 00:04:59.06\00:05:00.70 how are we getting ready for this big initiative? 00:05:00.73\00:05:02.50 How are we working together? 00:05:02.53\00:05:03.87 What are some of the things going on 00:05:03.90\00:05:05.33 in your neck of the woods? 00:05:05.37\00:05:06.70 I know that we won't be able to do any of them justice 00:05:06.74\00:05:08.97 because we have only seconds for each, 00:05:09.00\00:05:10.71 but what's going on in the field 00:05:10.74\00:05:12.67 to get ready for this big initiative? 00:05:12.71\00:05:15.41 Well, in Northeastern, 00:05:15.44\00:05:16.78 we're trying to spread the word first of all, 00:05:16.81\00:05:19.48 and then trying to get the members 00:05:19.51\00:05:22.28 and the pastors trained. 00:05:22.32\00:05:24.42 One of the mediums that we are using 00:05:24.45\00:05:27.56 is through our health ministries, 00:05:27.59\00:05:29.06 a lot of missionary training, medical missionaries, 00:05:29.09\00:05:32.29 Bible's instructors, 00:05:32.33\00:05:34.73 those are two of the initiatives 00:05:34.76\00:05:37.43 that we are starting to work with, 00:05:37.47\00:05:39.50 train individuals so that they can get out. 00:05:39.53\00:05:42.60 So a lot of emphasis 00:05:42.64\00:05:44.04 on getting the members into the streets, 00:05:44.07\00:05:45.74 and they're the ones being ministers. 00:05:45.77\00:05:47.44 Right. 00:05:47.48\00:05:48.81 We believe that 00:05:48.84\00:05:50.85 until you mobilize the lay members, 00:05:50.88\00:05:53.75 you're not going to be able to accomplish the task, 00:05:53.78\00:05:56.22 and that's what we're doing. 00:05:56.25\00:05:57.95 We are currently training lay Bible workers. 00:05:57.99\00:06:01.89 We have been training our pastors. 00:06:01.92\00:06:04.73 We are engaged with prayer ministries. 00:06:04.76\00:06:07.60 In fact, we in Greater New York Conference 00:06:07.63\00:06:10.13 intend to have 3000 prayer warriors 00:06:10.17\00:06:13.13 for this project. 00:06:13.17\00:06:16.30 We are working on the medical aspect as well. 00:06:16.34\00:06:19.84 We have people who are working there. 00:06:19.87\00:06:23.35 We have what? 00:06:23.38\00:06:24.71 Department leaders, 00:06:24.75\00:06:26.08 who are already engaged 00:06:26.11\00:06:27.68 in preparing the various segments 00:06:27.72\00:06:30.79 of the conference. 00:06:30.82\00:06:33.12 We are currently also getting ready 00:06:33.15\00:06:36.42 with The Great Hope book, 00:06:36.46\00:06:40.26 we are intended to scatter them like the leaves of autumn. 00:06:40.30\00:06:44.37 Now The Great Hope is the condensed version, 00:06:44.40\00:06:46.47 it's the abridged version for... 00:06:46.50\00:06:48.00 A sharing version really of The Great Controversy. 00:06:48.04\00:06:49.64 Yes, yes. 00:06:49.67\00:06:51.01 And we are very enthusiastic 00:06:51.04\00:06:54.21 about the prospect of sharing several thousand. 00:06:54.24\00:06:59.28 In fact, this New York 13 00:06:59.31\00:07:02.02 is not only considering 2 million or 3 million, 00:07:02.05\00:07:05.22 we are hoping that we could do even 4, 00:07:05.25\00:07:07.29 5 million, maybe 20 million. 00:07:07.32\00:07:08.66 Unbelievable. 00:07:08.69\00:07:10.03 And so we're excited about that in Greater New York Conference 00:07:10.06\00:07:12.96 along with my sister conferences, 00:07:12.99\00:07:15.10 we want to make this a tremendous success 00:07:15.13\00:07:18.13 for the advancement of the kingdom of God. 00:07:18.17\00:07:20.50 Elder King, tell me a little bit more 00:07:20.54\00:07:22.00 about this Great Hope Project? 00:07:22.04\00:07:23.91 Yes, Great Hope, as you mentioned earlier, 00:07:23.94\00:07:26.24 is a condensed version, 00:07:26.27\00:07:27.71 a distribution version of The Great Controversy. 00:07:27.74\00:07:31.88 And our hope and vision is to distribute 00:07:31.91\00:07:36.28 two to three million copies of these books, 00:07:36.32\00:07:38.79 which is sort of like one tenth of the entire population 00:07:38.82\00:07:41.26 of New York City. 00:07:41.29\00:07:42.62 And we're excited about it. 00:07:42.66\00:07:44.46 And we are depending on our church members, 00:07:44.49\00:07:47.76 and to really be able to purchase these books, 00:07:47.80\00:07:51.87 boxes up them so that they can be made available. 00:07:51.90\00:07:54.97 There are other parts of the world 00:07:55.00\00:07:57.64 where this has been done, 00:07:57.67\00:07:59.01 and we hope to do the same thing 00:07:59.04\00:08:00.38 in New York City. 00:08:00.41\00:08:01.74 I'm a member in one of your churches, 00:08:01.78\00:08:03.11 how many copies, how much would you hope 00:08:03.14\00:08:04.75 that I would support The Great Hope Project. 00:08:04.78\00:08:06.31 What would you recommend to my family and I, 00:08:06.35\00:08:08.15 perhaps as something that we could do 00:08:08.18\00:08:10.65 to participate in that? 00:08:10.69\00:08:12.02 I think if you could purchase a few hundred of these books, 00:08:12.05\00:08:16.46 you know, I'd like to recommend thousands, 00:08:16.49\00:08:18.09 you know, especially for you. 00:08:18.13\00:08:21.16 Wait, because we're all... They are only 39 cents. 00:08:21.20\00:08:23.20 Elder Earl, but they are 39 cents. 00:08:23.23\00:08:25.30 So it's not unrealistic for a family 00:08:25.33\00:08:27.70 to pray about 1000 copies. 00:08:27.74\00:08:29.07 Absolutely. 00:08:29.10\00:08:30.44 I mean, it's still a fair sum of money 00:08:30.47\00:08:31.81 for some families, 00:08:31.84\00:08:33.17 but we're stepping out in faith, 00:08:33.21\00:08:34.54 and this is about 00:08:34.58\00:08:35.91 making something happen by faith. 00:08:35.94\00:08:37.41 So really, for a family like mine, 00:08:37.45\00:08:38.95 1000 copies wouldn't be 00:08:38.98\00:08:40.32 out of the realm of possibility. 00:08:40.35\00:08:41.68 I think it's a doable. 00:08:41.72\00:08:43.05 Fantastic. 00:08:43.08\00:08:44.42 Elder Cortes, tell me about what is going on in New Jersey 00:08:44.45\00:08:46.89 and what you guys are doing to prepare the soil? 00:08:46.92\00:08:48.69 Oh, New Jersey is very excited. 00:08:48.72\00:08:50.73 As you normally, yours is a bit of evangelism. 00:08:50.76\00:08:53.36 They have bit of evangelism 00:08:53.40\00:08:54.73 and the home of the small groups. 00:08:54.76\00:08:56.97 And we are working in that direction. 00:08:57.00\00:08:59.43 We selected 80 cities 00:08:59.47\00:09:01.77 where we have not the presence 00:09:01.80\00:09:04.21 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:09:04.24\00:09:06.21 and we are starting with 12 committed Christians 00:09:06.24\00:09:10.35 beginning the mission in that particular city 00:09:10.38\00:09:12.75 and two universities, 00:09:12.78\00:09:14.25 Rutgers University and Princeton University. 00:09:14.28\00:09:16.89 And this group begin to get together with people, 00:09:16.92\00:09:20.46 and begin Bible stories, 00:09:20.49\00:09:21.92 sing a small group style as Jesus did it. 00:09:21.96\00:09:24.43 And then we already enlightened these cities 00:09:24.46\00:09:28.10 with the Gospel of Jesus. 00:09:28.13\00:09:29.73 And the plan is to have 80 new churches 00:09:29.76\00:09:33.87 in these 80 cities where we had not previously. 00:09:33.90\00:09:37.21 So you're dreaming of 80 new churches. 00:09:37.24\00:09:38.97 I think that's a kind of dream 00:09:39.01\00:09:40.84 that makes God smile about the project. 00:09:40.88\00:09:42.84 And the idea is not take 40, 50 member 00:09:42.88\00:09:47.98 for a particular church 00:09:48.02\00:09:49.48 and bring them to another city 00:09:49.52\00:09:50.99 because this is not church planting, 00:09:51.02\00:09:52.75 this is transplanting the church. 00:09:52.79\00:09:54.92 And what we are planning to do is church planting, 00:09:54.96\00:09:57.66 12 people to begin to have a critical mass, 00:09:57.69\00:10:00.56 and then organize them in a company 00:10:00.60\00:10:02.96 and then in a church. 00:10:03.00\00:10:04.33 So the dream really is new churches? 00:10:04.37\00:10:05.70 New churches with new people. 00:10:05.73\00:10:07.30 We have 100 million people in this country, 00:10:07.34\00:10:11.21 unchurched people, 00:10:11.24\00:10:12.57 people who know nothing about church, 00:10:12.61\00:10:14.01 they don't go to churches. 00:10:14.04\00:10:15.38 So we don't need to be picking members of the church. 00:10:15.41\00:10:18.01 We need to bring new people to our community. 00:10:18.05\00:10:21.22 Fantastic. 00:10:21.25\00:10:22.58 Elder Cheatham, tell me about what's going on 00:10:22.62\00:10:23.95 in your neck of the woods? 00:10:23.99\00:10:25.32 Well, again, in the northern part 00:10:25.35\00:10:26.69 of the New Jersey, 00:10:26.72\00:10:28.66 we are concentrating primarily 00:10:28.69\00:10:30.93 in the area of modeling the ministry of Jesus. 00:10:30.96\00:10:35.40 We're told that Jesus, He mingled, 00:10:35.43\00:10:39.27 He built relationships 00:10:39.30\00:10:41.67 regardless of what culture or whatever, 00:10:41.70\00:10:43.81 He reached out to Samaritans, Jews, everyone, poor, rich, 00:10:43.84\00:10:49.68 and that were, those were the what methods 00:10:49.71\00:10:51.61 that Jesus used. 00:10:51.65\00:10:53.82 In the heart of the urban area 00:10:53.85\00:10:55.18 that have lot of hurting people. 00:10:55.22\00:10:57.29 Rather than just, 00:10:57.32\00:10:58.65 we will be a part of spreading the message 00:10:58.69\00:11:02.02 through the book, 00:11:02.06\00:11:03.39 but we're training our pastors and our members 00:11:03.43\00:11:05.76 to get out in the streets, 00:11:05.79\00:11:07.76 go up and down the neighborhoods, 00:11:07.80\00:11:09.66 knock on doors, 00:11:09.70\00:11:12.03 find out what the needs of that community are, 00:11:12.07\00:11:14.54 and meet their physical 00:11:14.57\00:11:16.30 as well as their spiritual needs, 00:11:16.34\00:11:18.34 and win them to Jesus Christ. 00:11:18.37\00:11:20.21 So a real community based approach? 00:11:20.24\00:11:21.58 Right. 00:11:21.61\00:11:22.94 Elder Tochterman, tell me a little bit about your? 00:11:22.98\00:11:24.31 Yes, Shawn, in the Southwestern part of the Connecticut, 00:11:24.35\00:11:26.28 there are three counties, the Fairfield County, 00:11:26.31\00:11:30.19 the Litchfield County, and the New Haven County. 00:11:30.22\00:11:33.39 In those three counties are 20, rather two million, 00:11:33.42\00:11:39.66 two and a half million people, you know, 00:11:39.69\00:11:42.06 and they are the counties closest to New York. 00:11:42.10\00:11:45.27 And in those counties, we have 11 churches, 00:11:45.30\00:11:47.50 they're growing churches, 00:11:47.54\00:11:49.20 but they're looking forward to growing more 00:11:49.24\00:11:51.04 as they become a part of NY 13. 00:11:51.07\00:11:54.44 Well, now, recently, 00:11:54.48\00:11:56.24 we started talking to pastors and so on, 00:11:56.28\00:11:58.18 pastors are looking at this, I mean that... 00:11:58.21\00:11:59.75 You guys are representing groups of workers, 00:11:59.78\00:12:02.48 how can pastors become involved in this? 00:12:02.52\00:12:04.32 What role should they be playing 00:12:04.35\00:12:05.75 as we reach out into all these metropolitan areas? 00:12:05.79\00:12:09.19 Training the members of the church 00:12:09.22\00:12:11.26 how to do that type of ministry, 00:12:11.29\00:12:13.76 that's what I want my pastors. 00:12:13.80\00:12:15.43 So really a model 00:12:15.46\00:12:16.80 where pastors aren't doing the work 00:12:16.83\00:12:18.27 and the members are watching 00:12:18.30\00:12:19.63 and an entertainment based kind of a model. 00:12:19.67\00:12:22.30 Pastors serve as mentors and coaches. 00:12:22.34\00:12:23.91 And so if members would like to participate, 00:12:23.94\00:12:26.71 the best thing to do, 00:12:26.74\00:12:28.08 it's coming to the pastor and say, 00:12:28.11\00:12:29.84 "What can I do? And how can I get started?" 00:12:29.88\00:12:33.28 Am I hearing right? 00:12:33.31\00:12:34.65 Pastors are the gatekeepers. 00:12:34.68\00:12:36.42 They are in charge of the church. 00:12:36.45\00:12:38.69 And their mission is to be the trainers of the trainers. 00:12:38.72\00:12:41.86 If we are going to grow, we need people to be trained 00:12:41.89\00:12:44.23 to do the mission of the church in the right way. 00:12:44.26\00:12:47.16 I should also say, Shawn, that pastors, 00:12:47.20\00:12:49.13 the pastors will be constantly updated 00:12:49.16\00:12:51.73 with information about NY13. 00:12:51.77\00:12:53.94 Okay, and how does that happen? 00:12:53.97\00:12:55.30 Well, we're going to have newsletters 00:12:55.34\00:12:57.37 through our website, NY13.org. 00:12:57.41\00:13:00.18 In fact, anyone can go on NY13.org 00:13:00.21\00:13:03.08 and find out information about what's happening, 00:13:03.11\00:13:05.41 what is taking place, what is going to take place 00:13:05.45\00:13:07.55 and so forth, 00:13:07.58\00:13:08.92 all the announcements will be there. 00:13:08.95\00:13:10.29 So newsletters, the website, you know, the internet, 00:13:10.32\00:13:13.36 you know, all these various medium 00:13:13.39\00:13:16.62 we'll be able to get this information out. 00:13:16.66\00:13:18.83 What about Facebook?
