Amen. 00:10:21.13\00:10:32.20 Getty and Townend said that there are two reasons 00:10:42.20\00:10:45.58 that they write modern Hymns. 00:10:45.59\00:10:47.82 The first is to teach the faith. 00:10:47.83\00:10:50.27 The second is to try to create a more timeless 00:10:50.28\00:10:52.77 musical style that every generation can sing, 00:10:52.78\00:10:56.76 a style that relates to the past and the future. 00:10:56.77\00:11:00.39 In Christ Alone was written to make a statement 00:11:00.40\00:11:03.20 about the life and love of Christ. 00:11:03.21\00:11:06.48 In Christ alone my hope is found 00:11:22.05\00:11:27.83 He is my light, my strength, my song 00:11:27.84\00:11:32.79 This Cornerstone, this solid ground 00:11:32.80\00:11:38.21 Firm through the fiercest drought and storm 00:11:38.22\00:11:43.14 What heights of love, what depths of peace 00:11:43.15\00:11:48.41 When fears are stilled, when strivings cease 00:11:48.42\00:11:53.87 My Comforter, my all in all 00:11:53.88\00:11:59.11 Here in the love of Christ I stand. 00:11:59.12\00:12:06.33 In Christ alone, who took on flesh 00:12:11.79\00:12:17.29 Fullness of God in helpless babe 00:12:17.30\00:12:22.20 This gift of love and righteousness 00:12:22.21\00:12:27.72 Scorned by the ones He came to save 00:12:27.73\00:12:32.89 Till on that cross as Jesus died 00:12:32.90\00:12:38.17 The wrath of God was satisfied 00:12:38.18\00:12:43.33 For every sin on Him was laid 00:12:43.34\00:12:48.73 Here in the death of Christ I live 00:12:48.74\00:12:55.82 There in the ground His body lay 00:13:14.68\00:13:19.94 Light of the world by darkness slain 00:13:19.95\00:13:24.77 Then bursting forth in glorious day 00:13:24.78\00:13:30.45 Up from the grave He rose again 00:13:30.46\00:13:35.21 And as He stands in victory 00:13:35.22\00:13:40.46 Sin's curse has lost its grip on me 00:13:40.47\00:13:45.73 For I am His and He is mine 00:13:45.74\00:13:51.21 Bought with the precious blood of Christ 00:13:51.22\00:13:59.06 No guilt in life, no fear in death 00:14:03.97\00:14:09.59 This is the power of Christ in me 00:14:09.60\00:14:14.49 From life's first cry to final breath 00:14:14.50\00:14:20.10 Jesus commands my destiny 00:14:20.11\00:14:24.87 No power of hell, no scheme of man 00:14:24.88\00:14:30.10 Can ever pluck me from His hand 00:14:30.11\00:14:37.99 Till He returns to take me home 00:14:38.00\00:14:43.37 Here in the power of Christ I'll stand 00:14:43.38\00:14:48.36 No power of hell, no scheme of man 00:14:48.37\00:14:53.57 Can ever pluck me from His hand 00:14:53.58\00:15:01.34 Till He returns or calls me home 00:15:01.35\00:15:04.03 Here in the power of Christ I'll stand. 00:15:04.04\00:15:23.35 Wow, praise the Lord. 00:15:28.63\00:15:30.98 I'm gonna invite, I have a little kids choired 00:15:30.99\00:15:34.10 to help me and it's 00:15:34.11\00:15:35.36 from the Thompsonville Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:15:35.37\00:15:38.07 and along with my grandchildren. 00:15:38.08\00:15:40.20 And the song we're gonna be singing 00:15:40.21\00:15:41.63 "Tis love that makes us happy" 00:15:41.64\00:15:43.46 probably many of you have sing this song 00:15:43.47\00:15:45.99 in your Sabbath school classes growing up, 00:15:46.00\00:15:48.72 it was written by F E Belden. 00:15:48.73\00:15:50.76 And he wrote it in 1892. 00:15:50.77\00:15:54.11 And he was actually a nephew of James and Ellen White. 00:15:54.12\00:15:57.28 One of the most prolific Adventist writers, 00:15:57.29\00:16:00.03 wrote over 700 songs. 00:16:00.04\00:16:02.54 So right now we're gonna sing, 00:16:02.55\00:16:03.76 "Tis love that makes us happy." 00:16:03.77\00:16:07.10 This world is full of sorrow Of sickness, death, and sin 00:16:28.46\00:16:38.59 With loving heart we'll do our part. 00:16:38.60\00:16:43.84 And try some soul to win 00:16:43.85\00:16:48.80 And when this life is over And we are called above 00:16:48.81\00:16:58.34 Our song shall be, eternally Of Jesus and His love 00:16:58.35\00:17:12.12 God is love, we're His little children 00:17:12.13\00:17:18.80 God is love, we would be like Him 00:17:18.81\00:17:25.08 'Tis love that makes us happy 00:17:25.09\00:17:28.31 'Tis love that smoothes the way 00:17:28.32\00:17:31.79 It helps us mind, it makes us kind 00:17:31.80\00:17:35.37 To others every day 00:17:35.38\00:17:40.47 God is love, we're His little children 00:17:40.48\00:17:46.98 God is love, we would be like Him 00:17:46.99\00:17:53.24 'Tis love that makes us happy 00:17:53.25\00:17:56.77 'Tis love that smoothes the way 00:17:56.78\00:17:59.95 It helps us mind, it makes us kind 00:17:59.96\00:18:03.61 To others every day All right, kids. 00:18:03.62\00:18:08.81 Praise Him, praise Him All ye little children, 00:18:08.82\00:18:15.34 God is love, God is love 00:18:15.35\00:18:22.06 Praise Him, praise Him All ye little children, 00:18:22.07\00:18:28.76 God is love, God is love. 00:18:28.77\00:18:37.03 God is love, we're His little children 00:18:37.04\00:18:43.17 Sing with us. Moody 00:24:52.16\00:24:54.21 when he was doing his work in Chicago. 00:24:54.22\00:24:56.69 It is interesting that such a wonderful song 00:24:56.70\00:24:58.78 is shrouded in controversy. 00:24:58.79\00:25:01.54 The first controversy is authorship. 00:25:01.55\00:25:04.17 Now depending on what hymnal you have, 00:25:04.18\00:25:06.86 the author's name is different. 00:25:06.87\00:25:09.34 In the Adventist hymnal 00:25:09.35\00:25:10.72 the author is listed as Lidie H. Edmunds. 00:25:10.73\00:25:14.85 But there is some very credible scholarship that says 00:25:14.86\00:25:18.38 Lidie H. Edmunds never existed. 00:25:18.39\00:25:22.29 That was just a pen name 00:25:22.30\00:25:24.08 for the writer Eliza Edmunds Hewitt. 00:25:24.09\00:25:28.48 So depending on what hymnal you have, 00:25:28.49\00:25:30.37 you'll have Lidie H. Edmunds or Eliza Edmunds Hewitt. 00:25:30.38\00:25:33.59 Many believe that Edmunds was just a fictitious name. 00:25:33.60\00:25:36.12 That happened many times for writers who wrote a lot. 00:25:36.13\00:25:39.32 They use several different names 00:25:39.33\00:25:40.93 and their publishers encourage them 00:25:40.94\00:25:42.39 to do that so that you didn't get a lot of material 00:25:42.40\00:25:44.66 from one writer but you got all of these different names. 00:25:44.67\00:25:47.11 That's controversy number one. 00:25:47.12\00:25:49.28 Controversy number two is the music. 00:25:49.29\00:25:52.54 The Adventist hymnal says Norwegian Melody. 00:25:52.55\00:25:55.17 But if you get another hymnal or do a little research, 00:25:55.18\00:25:59.01 it says that the melody was written 00:25:59.02\00:26:01.55 by William Kirkpatrick of Pennsylvania. 00:26:01.56\00:26:05.20 So it's either a Norwegian Melody 00:26:05.21\00:26:07.41 or William Kirkpatrick's melody. 00:26:07.42\00:26:09.78 And many times in the 1800s, 1700s, 00:26:09.79\00:26:12.92 popular tunes were sort of sanitized 00:26:12.93\00:26:16.13 and given religious overtones. 00:26:16.14\00:26:18.46 And controversy number three, 00:26:18.47\00:26:20.19 depending on what hymnal you have, 00:26:20.20\00:26:22.18 the song says I need no other argument 00:26:22.19\00:26:25.95 or I need no other evidence. 00:26:25.96\00:26:29.18 The Adventist hymnal says evidence, 00:26:29.19\00:26:31.62 and since I'm an Adventist I'm using evidence. 00:26:31.63\00:26:35.90 Now to be sure these are not great controversies, 00:26:35.91\00:26:38.51 they're just interesting little new answers 00:26:38.52\00:26:40.53 on this hymn which is a great hymn of the church, 00:26:40.54\00:26:43.83 which was written at the close of this 00:26:43.84\00:26:46.82 great century of hymn writing, 00:26:46.83\00:26:48.62 "My faith has found a resting place." 00:26:48.63\00:26:53.59 My faith has found a resting place 00:27:10.56\00:27:16.04 Not in device nor creed 00:27:16.05\00:27:21.07 I trust the Ever-living One That He for me shall plead 00:27:21.08\00:27:31.27 I need no other evidence I need no other plea 00:27:31.28\00:27:41.94 It is enough that Jesus died And rose again for me 00:27:41.95\00:27:55.45 Enough for me that Jesus saves This ends my fear and doubt 00:28:00.00\00:28:10.32 A sinful soul, I come to Him He'll not cast me out 00:28:10.33\00:28:20.74 I need no other evidence I need no other plea 00:28:20.75\00:28:31.40 It is enough that Jesus died And rose again for me 00:28:31.41\00:28:44.22 The great Physician heals the sick 00:28:44.23\00:28:49.50 The lost He came to save 00:28:49.51\00:28:54.75 For me His precious blood He shed 00:28:54.76\00:28:59.92 For me His life He gave 00:28:59.93\00:29:05.03 I need no other evidence I need no other plea 00:29:05.04\00:29:15.84 It is enough that Jesus died And rose again for me 00:29:15.85\00:29:30.13 My soul is resting on the Word The living Word of God 00:29:36.61\00:29:46.93 Salvation in my Savior's name Salvation thro' His blood 00:29:46.94\00:29:57.17 I need no other evidence I need no other plea 00:29:57.18\00:30:07.73 It is enough that Jesus died And rose again for me. 00:30:07.74\00:30:30.76 Together Let Us Sweetly Live is one of those hymns 00:30:40.71\00:30:45.20 that has always been around very little 00:30:45.21\00:30:48.16 as known as to where it was written 00:30:48.17\00:30:51.87 or prayer originated. 00:30:51.88\00:30:54.34 It has simply always been there. 00:30:54.35\00:30:56.65 But it was one of the favorites of early Adventists. 00:30:56.66\00:31:00.06 Joshua Hines, for instance recognized 00:31:00.07\00:31:03.46 the message of the song. 00:31:03.47\00:31:05.44 Part of which message says, 00:31:05.45\00:31:06.95 "I Am Bound for Canaan Land." Amen! 00:31:06.96\00:31:10.08 And so that was the Second Coming song 00:31:10.09\00:31:12.89 and he included it in a book of songs that he printed. 00:31:12.90\00:31:17.33 Joshua Hines realized not only that singing was good 00:31:17.34\00:31:21.53 but that publishing the words of music was something 00:31:21.54\00:31:25.23 that was very exciting. 00:31:25.24\00:31:26.79 And for people to actually see, 00:31:26.80\00:31:29.38 what the message of the song was. 00:31:29.39\00:31:31.73 Later on F. E. Belden included it about 1886, 00:31:31.74\00:31:36.94 I believe, in Hymns and Tunes, 00:31:36.95\00:31:39.62 one of the early Adventists Hymns notes. 00:31:39.63\00:31:42.26 And it has been included in most Adventist books 00:31:42.27\00:31:46.82 ever since, beautiful song. 00:31:46.83\00:31:49.97 Together let us sweetly live, 00:32:00.92\00:32:06.54 I am bound for the land of Canaan, 00:32:06.55\00:32:10.99 Together love to Jesus give 00:32:11.00\00:32:16.72 I am bound for the land of Canaan 00:32:16.73\00:32:21.50 O Canaan, bright Canaan, 00:32:21.51\00:32:26.08 I am bound for the land of Canaan, 00:32:26.09\00:32:30.60 O Canaan, it is my happy home, 00:32:30.61\00:32:35.23 I am bound for the land of Canaan. 00:32:35.24\00:32:40.54 Together let us watch and pray, 00:32:45.53\00:32:50.05 I am bound for the land of Canaan. 00:32:50.06\00:32:54.59 And wait redemption's joyous day 00:32:54.60\00:32:59.19 I am bound for the land of Canaan. 00:32:59.20\00:33:03.69 O Canaan, bright Canaan, 00:33:03.70\00:33:08.36 I am bound for the land of Canaan, 00:33:08.37\00:33:12.74 O Canaan, it is my happy home, 00:33:12.75\00:33:17.34 I am bound for the land of Canaan. 00:33:17.35\00:33:24.45 Our songs of praise shall fill the skies, 00:33:24.46\00:33:30.04 I am bound for the land of Canaan. 00:33:30.05\00:33:34.61 While higher still our joys shall rise, 00:33:34.62\00:33:40.40 I am bound for the land of Canaan. 00:33:40.41\00:33:45.69 Then come with me, beloved friend, 00:33:54.21\00:33:59.64 I am bound for the land of Canaan. 00:33:59.65\00:34:04.45 Oh, the joys to come shall never end, 00:34:04.46\00:34:10.72 I am bound for the land of Canaan. 00:34:10.73\00:34:16.03 O Canaan, bright Canaan, 00:34:16.04\00:34:21.58 I am bound for the land of Canaan, 00:34:21.59\00:34:29.69 O Canaan, it is my happy home, 00:34:29.70\00:34:35.15 I am bound for the land of Canaan. 00:34:35.16\00:34:40.63 I am bound for the land of Canaan. Amen! 00:34:40.64\00:34:58.84 There are few songs that capture 00:35:05.24\00:35:06.94 the essence of what pathos is more than 00:35:06.95\00:35:09.02 in the heart of Jesus. 00:35:09.03\00:35:11.11 Credit for writing this hymn is given to Alex Pugh. 00:35:11.12\00:35:14.21 The challenge is no one knows who Alex Pugh is? 00:35:14.22\00:35:17.63 Whoever she was, Alex Pugh, 00:35:17.64\00:35:19.86 was greatly used by the Lord to write one of the sweetest, 00:35:19.87\00:35:23.36 most tender and inviting songs from the Christian Era. 00:35:23.37\00:35:27.34 In the heart of Jesus There is love for you, 00:35:34.44\00:35:47.73 And love most pure and tender, Love most deep and true, 00:35:47.74\00:36:01.57 Why should you be lonely? O praise ye the Lord! 00:42:40.78\00:42:47.55 Hallelujah! O praise ye the Lord! 00:42:47.56\00:43:05.27 Wow! What a message? Amen. 00:43:13.90\00:43:16.67 Jesus is coming again. Amen! I love that one. 00:43:16.68\00:43:19.89 And... oh, that is exciting song, it really is. 00:43:19.90\00:43:24.70 You can see why, those who sang it, 00:43:24.71\00:43:28.62 we're so excited about the Second Coming of Jesus 00:43:28.63\00:43:31.90 and so many of these Camille, are just that way. 00:43:31.91\00:43:35.95 The next song we're gonna be singing, 00:43:35.96\00:43:37.52 the choir we'll sing together is a medley of two songs, 00:43:37.53\00:43:41.16 we have heard which was the song that was written, 00:43:41.17\00:43:46.74 right about the same time that the Second Coming 00:43:46.75\00:43:51.16 was being pronounced. 00:43:51.17\00:43:52.40 It was written by William Hyde. 00:43:52.41\00:43:54.46 And this was the man who was present 00:43:54.47\00:43:57.29 when Ellen White had the vision. 00:43:57.30\00:44:00.24 You remember the vision that talked about 00:44:00.25\00:44:02.27 the language of Canaan and you remember 00:44:02.28\00:44:04.60 that song we sang in Pillars One 00:44:04.61\00:44:07.22 about the language of Canaan. 00:44:07.23\00:44:09.00 This man was there 00:44:09.01\00:44:11.32 and so he originally wrote this, 00:44:11.33\00:44:14.06 called this song, "A Better Land." 00:44:14.07\00:44:16.61 But it was changed to "We Have Heard." 00:44:16.62\00:44:20.56 And the hymn remained one of Ellen White's 00:44:20.57\00:44:23.19 favorites throughout her life. 00:44:23.20\00:44:26.05 Friends have noted that she sing it 00:44:26.06\00:44:29.03 through her final illness and even during 00:44:29.04\00:44:32.11 the last week of her life. 00:44:32.12\00:44:34.19 Perhaps we have heard it was so dear to her 00:44:34.20\00:44:37.62 because it reminded her of her first vision. 00:44:37.63\00:44:41.77 This was the vision where Christ Himself 00:44:41.78\00:44:44.34 gave her a tour of heaven. 00:44:44.35\00:44:46.47 Tim Pardon has joined this together with another song 00:44:46.48\00:44:50.34 that is almost ageless it's over 300 years old. 00:44:50.35\00:44:54.33 It was at least a 140 years old at the time 00:44:54.34\00:44:57.55 when this song was written and about 1850 00:44:57.56\00:45:00.93 it was a 140 years old already. 00:45:00.94\00:45:03.86 "It's where marching to Zion". Amen. 00:45:03.87\00:45:06.89 A song that was put together by Sir Isaac Watts. 00:45:06.90\00:45:12.34 And so now we're going to sing these two songs together. 00:45:12.35\00:45:18.03 We have heard from the bright, the holy land, 00:45:54.66\00:45:59.52 We have heard, and our hearts are glad, 00:45:59.53\00:46:04.35 For we were a lonely pilgrim band, 00:46:04.36\00:46:09.29 And weary, and worn, and sad. 00:46:09.30\00:46:14.23 They tell us the saints have a dwelling there 00:46:14.24\00:46:19.03 No longer are homeless ones, 00:46:19.04\00:46:23.83 And we know that the goodly land is fair, 00:46:23.84\00:46:28.72 Where life's pure river runs. 00:46:28.73\00:46:35.97 We have heard of the palms, the robes, the crowns, 00:46:35.98\00:46:40.92 And the silvery band in white. 00:46:40.93\00:46:45.67 Of the city fair, with pearly gates, 00:46:45.68\00:46:50.61 All radiant with light. 00:46:50.62\00:46:55.62 We have heard of the saints and the angels there, 00:46:55.63\00:47:00.39 With their harps of gold, how they sing, 00:47:00.40\00:47:05.10 Of the mount with the fruitful tree of life, 00:47:05.11\00:47:10.15 Of the leaves that healing bring. 00:47:10.16\00:47:15.09 We're marching to Zion, Beautiful, beautiful Zion, 00:47:15.10\00:47:24.69 We're marching upward to Zion, 00:47:24.70\00:47:29.53 The beautiful city of God. 00:47:29.54\00:47:35.46 The King of that country, He is fair, 00:47:39.61\00:47:44.69 He's the joy and light of the place, 00:47:44.70\00:47:49.78 In His beauty we shall behold Him there, 00:47:49.79\00:47:55.08 And bask in His smiling face. 00:47:55.09\00:48:02.85 We'll be there, we'll be there in a little while, 00:48:02.86\00:48:07.73 We'll join the pure and the blest, 00:48:07.74\00:48:12.63 We'll have the palm, the robe, the crown, 00:48:12.64\00:48:17.32 And forever be at rest. 00:48:17.33\00:48:24.63 We're marching to Zion, Beautiful, beautiful Zion, 00:48:24.64\00:48:34.28 We're marching upward to Zion, 00:48:34.29\00:48:39.34 The beautiful city of God. 00:48:39.35\00:48:44.03 We're marching to Zion, Beautiful, beautiful Zion, 00:48:44.04\00:48:53.85 We're marching upward to Zion, 00:48:53.86\00:48:58.84 The beautiful city of God. 00:48:58.85\00:49:03.66 We have heard from the bright, the holy land, 00:49:03.67\00:49:09.67 That beautiful city of God, 00:49:09.68\00:49:15.88 City of God. Amen. 00:49:15.89\00:49:24.96 The Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:49:34.37\00:49:36.17 had not yet come together. 00:49:36.18\00:49:38.45 Even its name was over a decade in the future. 00:49:38.46\00:49:42.31 What an exclusive joy it must have been to be 00:49:42.32\00:49:46.13 musically transported to heavenly places 00:49:46.14\00:49:49.75 by singing such heavenly music. 00:49:49.76\00:49:52.10 What heavenly music steals over the sea! 00:49:58.98\00:50:08.52 Entrancing the senses like sweet melody! 00:50:08.53\00:50:18.28 "Tis the voice of the angels borne soft on the air 00:50:18.29\00:50:30.82 For me they are singing, their welcome I hear 00:50:30.83\00:50:42.14 On the banks of old Jordan, here gazing I stand, 00:50:50.58\00:51:02.78 And earnestly longing, I stretch forth my hand, 00:51:02.79\00:51:14.93 Send a convoy of angels, dear Jesus, I pray! 00:51:14.94\00:51:27.43 Let me join that sweet music, come take me away! 00:51:27.44\00:51:39.01 Though dark are the waters and rough is the wave, 00:51:59.36\00:52:09.60 If Jesus permit, the wild surges I'll brave, 00:52:09.61\00:52:19.54 For that heavenly music hat ravished me so, 00:52:19.55\00:52:32.45 I must join in that chorus! Amen. 00:52:55.09\00:53:09.04 Edward Mote himself recalls that one day 00:53:14.09\00:53:16.13 we're walking down the street in his native London, 00:53:16.14\00:53:19.15 the chorus came to him, 00:53:19.16\00:53:20.65 "On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand." Amen! 00:53:20.66\00:53:23.71 All other ground is sinking sand. 00:53:23.72\00:53:26.58 Mote was neither a preacher nor him writer 00:53:26.59\00:53:29.07 and certainly had no background that would lead 00:53:29.08\00:53:31.22 anyone to think that he had training to write a hymn, 00:53:31.23\00:53:34.95 especially hymn such as this on. 00:53:34.96\00:53:37.43 His innkeeper parents would not so much as allow 00:53:37.44\00:53:40.54 a Bible in his house. 00:53:40.55\00:53:42.32 It's a wonder that he was able to hear 00:53:42.33\00:53:44.11 some of the Gospel as a team 00:53:44.12\00:53:46.61 and give his life to God, but he did. 00:53:46.62\00:53:49.79 Amen.
