Well, hello and welcome back 00:00:30.50\00:00:32.31 to our Bird Flu presentation, 00:00:32.32\00:00:34.19 this is part number 2. We've actually entitled 00:00:34.20\00:00:37.33 it Bird Flu Prevention, with this slogan: 00:00:37.34\00:00:41.04 You cannot stop the birds from flying over 00:00:41.05\00:00:44.23 your head, but you can keep them from 00:00:44.24\00:00:46.62 nesting in your hair! That's right, and again 00:00:46.63\00:00:50.44 with me here today is Dr. Bell, Amber, 00:00:50.45\00:00:54.18 and welcome back. Thank you for having me here. 00:00:54.19\00:00:56.20 Yes, well I'm reminded of what Lord Palmerston 00:00:56.21\00:01:00.86 of England said when he was approached 00:01:00.87\00:01:02.88 by the Scottish clergy, they wanted to appoint 00:01:02.89\00:01:06.84 a day of fasting and prayer for the cholera 00:01:06.85\00:01:09.38 and they came to him and he replied, in effect, 00:01:09.39\00:01:13.83 "Cleanse and disinfect your streets and houses, 00:01:13.84\00:01:16.95 promote cleanliness and health among the poor, 00:01:16.96\00:01:19.71 and see that they are plentifully supplied with 00:01:19.72\00:01:22.06 good food and raiment, and employ right 00:01:22.07\00:01:24.63 sanitary measures generally, and you 00:01:24.64\00:01:27.07 will have no occasion to fast and pray." 00:01:27.08\00:01:30.05 He went to say that: "Nor will the Lord hear 00:01:30.06\00:01:33.05 your prayers, while these, his preventives, 00:01:33.06\00:01:35.73 remain unheeded." First of all though Amber, 00:01:35.74\00:01:39.06 how is the flu spread. I'm sorry, a great 00:01:39.07\00:01:42.09 question you definitely wanna think about 00:01:42.10\00:01:43.53 where I'm gonna be coming in contact with 00:01:43.54\00:01:45.20 this virus, how is this gonna be passed from 00:01:45.21\00:01:46.96 person to person. It's primarily spread through 00:01:46.97\00:01:49.91 airborne droplets that can reach your eyes 00:01:49.92\00:01:52.40 or your nose or your mouth. 00:01:52.41\00:01:53.43 For instance if someone sneezes or coughs, 00:01:53.44\00:01:55.80 the droplets that, the moisture that comes 00:01:55.81\00:01:57.62 out of the lungs and the nose can be spread 00:01:57.63\00:01:59.99 through the air and picked up by your body. 00:02:00.00\00:02:02.92 Also you can spread it by touching contaminated 00:02:02.93\00:02:06.29 surfaces and then touching your face, 00:02:06.30\00:02:08.46 introducing the virus to your face. 00:02:08.47\00:02:10.22 Who does that? Everybody touches their face. 00:02:10.23\00:02:13.72 So maybe this is spread by nervousness 00:02:13.73\00:02:18.11 I touch something then I touch my face, 00:02:18.12\00:02:20.17 yes, and I guess maybe this is a nervous disease. 00:02:20.18\00:02:23.35 It's very true and it's true that the 00:02:23.36\00:02:27.18 more viruses you're exposed to the higher 00:02:27.19\00:02:29.84 your risk of contracting the flu. 00:02:29.85\00:02:31.26 Because you have more and more of that 00:02:31.27\00:02:32.40 virus in your body. The Surgeon General 00:02:32.41\00:02:34.99 of the United States back in 1918 was 00:02:35.00\00:02:37.71 Rupert Blue and Rupert Blue gave a number 00:02:37.72\00:02:42.33 of suggestions, I'll just read them off, 00:02:42.34\00:02:44.78 the first he said: Avoid needless crowding; 00:02:44.79\00:02:47.81 lots of people, lots of people in 1918 00:02:47.82\00:02:51.02 that was very important because 00:02:51.03\00:02:52.49 not only was the war effort underway 00:02:52.50\00:02:54.49 and there was crowding in the army camps. 00:02:54.50\00:02:56.67 But people had all moved to the cities 00:02:56.68\00:02:58.67 in order that they could be involved in industry, 00:02:58.68\00:03:01.76 yes. And so there was just numerous families 00:03:01.77\00:03:04.86 in one household and so and we've learned 00:03:04.87\00:03:08.65 that you need to be at least 6 feet apart 00:03:08.66\00:03:11.47 in order to avoid, the droplets, the droplets 00:03:11.48\00:03:15.62 yeah so I guess we better move a part here, 00:03:15.63\00:03:18.82 measure tape. And another thing he said was: 00:03:18.83\00:03:23.33 smother your coughs and your sneezes; 00:03:23.34\00:03:25.25 today we say do it in your coat sleeve 00:03:25.26\00:03:28.50 or something like that, it doesn't work just 00:03:28.51\00:03:30.62 to put your hand over your face, 00:03:30.63\00:03:32.28 because then your cough goes out between 00:03:32.29\00:03:34.28 your hand and your mouth all over the place 00:03:34.29\00:03:36.70 and you just spread it to people beside you, 00:03:36.71\00:03:38.66 instead of ones in front of you. 00:03:38.67\00:03:40.17 And then he shakes someone's hand 00:03:40.18\00:03:42.16 you know, oh! Yes, that's right, gets even worse. 00:03:42.17\00:03:44.82 The next thing he said was: Remember the 3 Cs, 00:03:44.83\00:03:47.77 clean mouth, clean skin, and clean clothes; 00:03:47.78\00:03:50.93 basic cleanliness and of course that's a good 00:03:50.94\00:03:54.23 thing to remember anytime, anywhere, yeah. 00:03:54.24\00:03:57.16 Cleanliness is next to Godliness isn't it? 00:03:57.17\00:04:00.11 That's right, he said: Food will win the war, 00:04:00.12\00:04:03.00 help by choosing and chewing your food well. 00:04:03.01\00:04:07.97 Wash your hands, wash your hands before eating, 00:04:07.98\00:04:10.33 wash your hands after you've touched things, 00:04:10.34\00:04:12.51 don't let the waste products of digestion 00:04:12.52\00:04:15.09 accumulate he said. I haven't heard 00:04:15.10\00:04:17.93 anybody say that recently, no, 00:04:17.94\00:04:20.23 but you can imagine if you have your colon 00:04:20.24\00:04:22.89 full of foods that are putting off toxins from 00:04:22.90\00:04:25.38 overgrowth of bacteria. Your immune system is 00:04:25.39\00:04:28.32 going to go down, to feeling compromised. 00:04:28.33\00:04:30.80 So, he said: Avoid tight clothing, tight shoes, 00:04:30.81\00:04:35.13 tight gloves; seek to make nature your ally 00:04:35.14\00:04:39.86 not your prisoner, then he said when 00:04:39.87\00:04:41.84 the air is pure, breathe all of it you can 00:04:41.85\00:04:44.61 breathe deeply. And that was his advice 00:04:44.62\00:04:48.37 and I think that goes a long ways, definitely. 00:04:48.38\00:04:51.49 And we get that from the book by John Barry, 00:04:51.50\00:04:55.07 the great influenza, it's a good book to 00:04:55.08\00:04:57.05 study on the 1918 flu, good book to study 00:04:57.06\00:04:59.94 if you're thinking about what the new 00:04:59.95\00:05:01.37 flu coming through might be like. 00:05:01.38\00:05:03.03 Definitely they always say review in 00:05:03.04\00:05:04.50 history is beneficial, I heard you talk 00:05:04.51\00:05:07.08 a lot about being careful with coughing 00:05:07.09\00:05:08.76 you know avoiding that droplet transmission, 00:05:08.77\00:05:10.73 what about other methods to protect 00:05:10.74\00:05:12.77 like healthcare providers often you see them 00:05:12.78\00:05:14.26 wearing mask around. It is suggested for health 00:05:14.27\00:05:16.92 care workers that they use an N95 respirators, 00:05:16.93\00:05:20.68 when the patient is sick, we like to put 00:05:20.69\00:05:23.39 on a surgical masks on them. 00:05:23.40\00:05:26.24 Very good, the surgical mask doesn't really 00:05:26.25\00:05:28.65 protect them from flu particles, 00:05:28.66\00:05:31.22 but it cuts down the distance so they can 00:05:31.23\00:05:33.29 cough or sneeze, out the particles. 00:05:33.30\00:05:36.09 So, preventing spread for the health care 00:05:36.10\00:05:37.62 workers and the other patients in the area? 00:05:37.63\00:05:39.42 That's right, very good, what is quarantine 00:05:39.43\00:05:41.80 anyway? Well, the quarantine is where 00:05:41.81\00:05:43.36 they either optionally or forcibly place someone 00:05:43.37\00:05:47.32 apart from other people in society to protect 00:05:47.33\00:05:49.71 either that person or society. 00:05:49.72\00:05:51.09 But if say 30 percent the population comes 00:05:51.10\00:05:53.84 down with the flu, that's not are gonna 00:05:53.85\00:05:55.02 be very infective. No, I guess we'd have 00:05:55.03\00:05:57.07 to put everybody to bed wouldn't? 00:05:57.08\00:05:58.45 I think so, yeah, close down the shop 00:05:58.46\00:06:00.36 Marshall Law. Yeah, once, once a pandemic 00:06:00.37\00:06:03.93 begins, quarantine isn't likely to be effective. 00:06:03.94\00:06:07.02 We start talking about social distancing; 00:06:07.03\00:06:09.80 social distancing is where you put space 00:06:09.81\00:06:12.32 between people. You know, everybody 00:06:12.33\00:06:13.97 carries a 10ft pole and, great, you don't get 00:06:13.98\00:06:16.66 within 10ft of people, well actually 6ft, 00:06:16.67\00:06:18.98 they poke you, you know they poke you. 00:06:18.99\00:06:20.98 If when we keep 6ft between people the 00:06:20.99\00:06:23.62 number of people contracting a pandemic 00:06:23.63\00:06:26.86 disease goes down dramatically. 00:06:26.87\00:06:28.88 Okay, so you just kind of wonder around 00:06:28.89\00:06:31.76 the neighborhood saying okay stay away 00:06:31.77\00:06:33.60 from me, unclean, unclean, and unclean yeah. 00:06:33.61\00:06:36.48 As a big thing we have for prevention 00:06:37.44\00:06:39.81 in our medical armamentarium is vaccine, 00:06:39.82\00:06:43.71 what do you know about vaccines? 00:06:43.72\00:06:45.25 Once a pandemic starts it can take anywhere 00:06:45.26\00:06:47.17 from 4 to 6 months before they develop 00:06:47.18\00:06:49.44 the vaccine by the time they find the 00:06:49.45\00:06:50.84 particular virus, do the testing on it 00:06:50.85\00:06:52.87 and develop the product and then finally 00:06:52.88\00:06:54.36 produce the vaccines. Oh! Yeah, by then 00:06:54.37\00:06:56.84 you know you've had it, it's gone. 00:06:56.85\00:06:58.41 Great and another country they've been 00:06:58.42\00:07:01.17 trying to vaccine, now as we've been working 00:07:01.18\00:07:02.53 over there. Well, you know as lot of countries 00:07:02.54\00:07:05.42 trying to vaccinate against the regular flu. 00:07:05.43\00:07:08.09 Canada's are new neighbor here; 00:07:08.10\00:07:09.98 they had a 15 year period I mean in 2005 00:07:09.99\00:07:13.58 where they tried what they called the 00:07:13.59\00:07:15.80 "Universal Influenza Immunization Campaign," 00:07:15.81\00:07:20.39 they wanna get everybody immunized, 00:07:20.40\00:07:22.12 see thinking you know cure the common cold 00:07:22.13\00:07:24.89 or the flu. And in 15 years they did not 00:07:24.90\00:07:29.10 significantly reduce the incidence of the 00:07:29.11\00:07:32.48 influenza. Well, what about antivirals, 00:07:32.49\00:07:35.06 do they have antivirals our there to, 00:07:35.07\00:07:36.82 to protect us against the viruses. 00:07:36.83\00:07:39.42 Yes, you know antivirals are the 00:07:39.43\00:07:41.03 next line of defense once people get the flu 00:07:41.04\00:07:43.51 and some of them have been used as 00:07:43.52\00:07:45.24 away of preventing the flu. The main one that 00:07:45.25\00:07:48.87 you've heard on the news a lot is Tamiflu, 00:07:48.88\00:07:51.76 Tamiflu. I remember when Tamiflu first came out, 00:07:51.77\00:07:54.79 the drug reps where come around and talk 00:07:54.80\00:07:56.61 to us physicians about it. Yeah, will reduce the 00:07:56.62\00:07:59.91 duration of the flu from 5 days to 4 days 00:07:59.92\00:08:03.88 and it will make the symptoms not as bad. 00:08:03.89\00:08:07.43 In China, reports are coming out that 00:08:07.44\00:08:09.72 they gave the drug at the right time 00:08:09.73\00:08:12.29 in the first day of symptoms. 00:08:12.30\00:08:14.28 They gave plenty of it and the people still died. 00:08:14.29\00:08:17.43 I guess, what we really need to think 00:08:17.44\00:08:19.18 about is prevention. Definitely it sounds 00:08:19.19\00:08:22.10 like the antivirals and the vaccinations 00:08:22.11\00:08:25.67 have been an attempt by the medical field 00:08:25.68\00:08:27.83 but their might be other options out there for us. 00:08:27.84\00:08:30.22 Yeah, yeah, you know when you think about 00:08:30.23\00:08:33.31 the flu coming around every year, 00:08:33.32\00:08:35.12 you know everybody doesn't get it, 00:08:35.13\00:08:37.08 over talking about it 30 percent attack rate. 00:08:37.09\00:08:40.81 What about the other 60, 70 percent 00:08:40.82\00:08:43.35 that don't get it, why didn't they get it? 00:08:43.36\00:08:46.16 How I'm gonna make sure that 00:08:46.17\00:08:47.25 I'm among those people that don't get attacked 00:08:47.26\00:08:50.41 by the flu? It's a great question, 00:08:50.42\00:08:52.60 you definitely wanna avoid it, 00:08:52.61\00:08:54.18 8 natural remedies, and have you hear that. 00:08:54.19\00:08:56.59 Eight natural remedies, yeah eight natural 00:08:56.60\00:08:57.64 doctors let's talk about those real quick. 00:08:57.65\00:08:59.61 Oh! But it's, it can't be promoted 00:09:31.14\00:09:32.90 enough it's very, very good to keep your 00:09:32.91\00:09:35.18 circulation and keep all your system running 00:09:35.19\00:09:36.84 properly. Use of water, keeping yourself 00:09:36.85\00:09:39.59 hydrated, very important. 00:09:39.60\00:09:41.00 Temperance, also very important component 00:09:41.01\00:09:46.45 making sure you do everything in moderation. 00:09:46.46\00:09:48.76 And then trusting to find power also many 00:09:48.77\00:09:51.74 studies show that people with a strong 00:09:51.75\00:09:53.96 faith do well, wow, so these are our 00:09:53.97\00:09:56.86 true remedies. I want to talk a little bit about 00:09:56.87\00:10:00.62 how the flu attacks us so that we kind 00:10:00.63\00:10:03.89 of have an idea how we can avoid getting 00:10:03.90\00:10:07.56 the flu by stimulating the part of immune 00:10:07.57\00:10:10.21 system that's gonna be a most important. 00:10:10.22\00:10:11.98 The first line of defense, first of 00:10:11.99\00:10:13.73 all is when the virus attacks the body, 00:10:13.74\00:10:17.58 it attacks say a lung cell, it goes in the cell 00:10:17.59\00:10:20.57 and it starts to take over the cell machine, 00:10:20.58\00:10:23.26 ready to make more viruses. 00:10:23.27\00:10:24.78 When it does that, it starts putting off 00:10:24.79\00:10:27.77 viruses out of that cell to go infect other cells 00:10:27.78\00:10:31.18 and so the number of viruses in the lungs 00:10:31.19\00:10:33.85 rises exponentially really fast and so the 00:10:33.86\00:10:38.33 first thing your body does in order to 00:10:38.34\00:10:40.51 bring down the number of viruses, 00:10:40.52\00:10:43.14 is it gets the natural killers cells working. 00:10:43.15\00:10:46.65 And it starts interferon working; 00:10:46.66\00:10:49.85 these two things are the first line of defense, 00:10:49.86\00:10:53.16 natural killer cells and interferon. 00:10:53.17\00:10:55.64 So, what we need to do is stimulate the 00:10:55.65\00:10:57.87 natural killer cells, make them so there 00:10:57.88\00:11:00.64 are more of them and so they're more active. 00:11:00.65\00:11:03.03 We wanna avoid the things that will 00:11:03.04\00:11:05.61 depress the natural killer cells, that's right 00:11:05.62\00:11:08.64 and then we wanna do things that will 00:11:08.65\00:11:10.49 increase interferon. After your first line 00:11:10.50\00:11:13.33 of defense, the second line of defense 00:11:13.34\00:11:15.46 is your lymphocytes, especially the B-Cells, 00:11:15.47\00:11:18.18 B-Cells produce antibodies. 00:11:18.19\00:11:21.08 The important antibody here is called IgA 00:11:21.09\00:11:24.36 Immunoglobulin A, so this is one that 00:11:24.37\00:11:26.65 we will look at also to see how the 00:11:26.66\00:11:28.64 8 natural remedies affect that are part 00:11:28.65\00:11:31.60 of the immune system. Sounds good, lets look 00:11:31.61\00:11:33.34 at pure air first, should we go outside to be 00:11:33.35\00:11:36.51 doing this. Well, the weather was conducive, 00:11:36.52\00:11:40.62 but pure air is definitely much better for you. 00:11:40.63\00:11:43.28 The negative air ions found in fresh air 00:11:43.29\00:11:45.42 can actually activate natural killer cells 00:11:45.43\00:11:47.48 and reduce the number of disease 00:11:47.49\00:11:49.05 causing microbes in the air. 00:11:49.06\00:11:50.39 Wow, well that's great, that's sounds real good, 00:11:50.40\00:11:53.65 alright. And in fact, it's been show in 00:11:53.66\00:11:54.74 many study, the different fragrances 00:11:54.75\00:11:56.27 such us pine, cedar, and the fir, 00:11:56.28\00:11:58.22 actually I have medicinal properties 00:11:58.23\00:12:00.54 that promotes healing. Wow, so, so maybe 00:12:00.55\00:12:03.85 I better take a walk outside in the forest, 00:12:03.86\00:12:06.58 in the woods that's right. Yes, several studies 00:12:06.59\00:12:08.37 have shown that pine cone extracts have 00:12:08.38\00:12:09.76 actually been shown to suppress the growth 00:12:09.77\00:12:11.60 of the influenza virus in the cells. 00:12:11.61\00:12:13.78 Oh! Well, that's great, and some people 00:12:13.79\00:12:15.30 are actually use pine as an essence oil. 00:12:15.31\00:12:16.95 Citrus has also been show to inhibit 00:12:16.96\00:12:18.98 influenza A virus, such as oils are often 00:12:18.99\00:12:22.21 recommended to reduce viruses in the air. 00:12:22.22\00:12:24.26 So, I guess I better get some lemons 00:12:24.27\00:12:26.21 and start squeeze the skins around, 00:12:26.22\00:12:27.72 that's one way to do it. Just as fresh air 00:12:27.73\00:12:31.53 and pine and citrus are good for you, 00:12:31.54\00:12:33.61 there are certain components that 00:12:33.62\00:12:34.71 you can find in air that are bad for you. 00:12:34.72\00:12:36.58 Studies have shown that high levels of Ozone 00:12:36.59\00:12:39.45 or sulfur dioxide, the component in acid rain 00:12:39.46\00:12:43.43 are actually very harmful and people 00:12:43.44\00:12:45.85 who live in these areas have more pneumonia 00:12:45.86\00:12:47.91 and more influenza. There's also studies 00:12:47.92\00:12:50.43 that show that people who had their offices 00:12:50.44\00:12:53.05 remodeled, new carpet, new plastic sheeting 00:12:53.06\00:12:55.58 on the wall, new desk and new chairs 00:12:55.59\00:12:57.89 that there was increased amount of formaldehyde, 00:12:57.90\00:13:01.42 phenol, organic hydrocarbons in the air 00:13:01.43\00:13:04.80 and the peoples immune systems suffered the 00:13:04.81\00:13:06.71 natural killer cell activity was reduced. 00:13:06.72\00:13:09.36 And so maybe you don't want to remodel 00:13:09.37\00:13:12.12 your office right before the bird flu session, 00:13:12.13\00:13:14.29 yeah that's right. What about mold? 00:13:14.30\00:13:18.59 Right, you hear lot about mold? 00:13:18.60\00:13:19.75 People who live in houses that have had mold, 00:13:19.76\00:13:22.56 have a higher incidence of respiratory infections 00:13:22.57\00:13:25.64 and symptoms. We also talked about sunlight 00:13:25.65\00:13:28.22 as one of our eight natural remedies 00:13:28.23\00:13:29.72 or eight natural doctors. And sunlight is very 00:13:29.73\00:13:32.39 important, that's right, this is a particularly 00:13:32.40\00:13:34.93 bright point. We did a study on people 00:13:34.94\00:13:38.30 who are they expose them to sunlight 00:13:38.31\00:13:40.14 for an hour a day for 12 days and then they 00:13:40.15\00:13:43.22 checked their immune system. 00:13:43.23\00:13:44.46 And it significantly increased their circulating 00:13:44.47\00:13:48.76 immune cells for up to two weeks after the 00:13:48.77\00:13:50.96 experiment. Which is very good, oh yeah, 00:13:50.97\00:13:53.98 keep reading on everything keeping 00:13:53.99\00:13:54.96 your immune system boosted. 00:13:54.97\00:13:55.94 Yeah, cancer you know and also is found 00:13:55.95\00:13:59.32 to trigger Vitamin D production and they 00:13:59.33\00:14:01.69 found that children who have a deficiency 00:14:01.70\00:14:04.78 are actually predispose to respiratory infections. 00:14:04.79\00:14:07.72 Wow, and they also find Vitamin D prevents 00:14:07.73\00:14:10.06 excessive inflammation or the cytokines storms 00:14:10.07\00:14:12.80 the inflammation coming into the area and also 00:14:12.81\00:14:16.00 it's the natural killer cells lining 00:14:16.01\00:14:17.92 the respiratory tract. We talk about the natural 00:14:17.93\00:14:20.06 killer cells interferon being the big first, 00:14:20.07\00:14:22.54 first line of defense. They've even come 00:14:22.55\00:14:24.93 to the conclusion that it's not the cold of 00:14:24.94\00:14:27.79 winter that presupposes people to a seasonal 00:14:27.80\00:14:30.90 you know cold session or flu session 00:14:30.91\00:14:33.69 but it's actually the deficiency of Vitamin D 00:14:33.70\00:14:36.11 from being endorsed all the time, that's true. 00:14:36.12\00:14:37.97 Tells the little bit about the interferon? 00:14:37.98\00:14:39.45 Yeah, you know there is a problem with the flu, 00:14:39.46\00:14:42.00 the flue attacks immune system 00:14:42.01\00:14:44.63 and it makes it so that the immune system 00:14:44.64\00:14:47.70 does not produce as much interferon. 00:14:47.71\00:14:49.85 When the flu is gone the immune system 00:14:49.86\00:14:52.04 is still shutdown. And then the bacteria can 00:14:52.05\00:14:55.54 come in and give you bacterial pneumonia, 00:14:55.55\00:14:58.33 when you go out in the sunlight, 00:14:58.34\00:14:59.70 it suppresses the viruses' ability to 00:14:59.71\00:15:03.90 knock out interferon. And so, this stimulation 00:15:03.91\00:15:07.48 to the immune system by the sunlight is very 00:15:07.49\00:15:09.86 important. Do you have any suggestions 00:15:09.87\00:15:11.71 about the amount of sunlight or any guidelines 00:15:11.72\00:15:14.73 to the amount of skin that needs to be exposed 00:15:14.74\00:15:16.49 or anything like that? The suggestion is that 00:15:16.50\00:15:18.56 you should be out in the sun for 20 minutes, 00:15:18.57\00:15:21.60 three days out of the week with at least 00:15:21.61\00:15:24.79 25 percent of your skin expose to the sun. 00:15:24.80\00:15:28.69 You know, you can decide which 25 percent 00:15:28.70\00:15:31.12 you want but, that's great. The other thing is, 00:15:31.13\00:15:35.44 is that sun has ultraviolet light in it 00:15:35.45\00:15:37.93 and ultraviolet light kills microbes in 00:15:37.94\00:15:41.18 this case, it will kill the influenza virus, 00:15:41.19\00:15:43.90 it's the UV light that does that. 00:15:43.91\00:15:45.89 Sometimes in the hospital will put up 00:15:45.90\00:15:47.39 UV lights just to kill more bugs. 00:15:47.40\00:15:49.39 Well, we talked about pure air and sunlight, 00:15:49.40\00:15:51.93 our next thing is temperance, 00:15:51.94\00:15:53.49 temperance means moderation or avoiding 00:15:53.50\00:15:56.15 things that aren't good for you. 00:15:56.16\00:15:57.46 The whole idea here is to avoid those things 00:15:57.47\00:16:00.31 which are bad, those things that are good 00:16:00.32\00:16:02.68 to use in moderation. Because we can over 00:16:02.69\00:16:05.61 do it on good stuff too, that's right. 00:16:05.62\00:16:07.51 And I think you know when you think about 00:16:07.52\00:16:09.82 the Bird Flu and you think about your lungs, 00:16:09.83\00:16:11.81 so first thing you think about is people 00:16:11.82\00:16:13.48 who are using their lungs for something 00:16:13.49\00:16:15.10 rather than just air, like perhaps tobacco 00:16:15.11\00:16:18.00 smoke, yes, studies have shown that: 00:16:18.01\00:16:20.21 Smokers are 1-1/2 times more likely 00:16:20.22\00:16:23.95 to catch the flu and what's more on 00:16:23.96\00:16:26.30 the early flu, if the smoker gets the flu 00:16:26.31\00:16:28.78 they'll will be 70 percent more likely to take off 00:16:28.79\00:16:31.68 work as a result of the flu. So, I wouldn't be 00:16:31.69\00:16:34.57 smoking. Well, smoking tends to be associated 00:16:34.58\00:16:37.59 with alcohol often, I'm sure alcohol is bad 00:16:37.60\00:16:39.72 for immune system. Yes and the alcohol poisons 00:16:39.73\00:16:42.49 the lowers killer cells and the people 00:16:42.50\00:16:44.55 who drink a lot of alcohol definitely have 00:16:44.56\00:16:47.19 suppressed immune systems. 00:16:47.20\00:16:49.09 What's also interesting is together the two are 00:16:49.10\00:16:51.88 multiplicative in their effect, the two together 00:16:51.89\00:16:54.65 really knock out the immune system more 00:16:54.66\00:16:56.20 than either one by themselves with. 00:16:56.21\00:16:58.29 Yeah, what else can we be excessive 00:16:58.30\00:16:59.92 that can bother our immune systems? 00:16:59.93\00:17:02.07 You know, we all have to eat, people who eat 00:17:02.08\00:17:05.58 less have more active natural killer cells, 00:17:05.59\00:17:09.06 interesting. And this is especially important 00:17:09.07\00:17:12.23 as people get older because as you get 00:17:12.24\00:17:13.89 older your immune system tends to decline, 00:17:13.90\00:17:16.22 but people who are on core restriction can 00:17:16.23\00:17:19.24 attenuate that decline over a long period 00:17:19.25\00:17:21.80 of time. Well, another natural remedy 00:17:21.81\00:17:24.14 that we've talked about is proper rest, 00:17:24.15\00:17:26.60 we found out people who sleep well have 00:17:26.61\00:17:28.67 significantly better immune systems than 00:17:28.68\00:17:30.22 people who have insomnia. Must be your 00:17:30.23\00:17:32.38 immune system likes to sleep too, yeah 00:17:32.39\00:17:34.47 good rest for the whole body. 00:17:34.48\00:17:36.13 They found actually in a study with mice 00:17:36.14\00:17:39.74 that sleep is beneficial. They took some mice 00:17:39.75\00:17:43.60 and they vaccinated them and then they 00:17:43.61\00:17:45.69 put them in two groups, one group they're 00:17:45.70\00:17:48.25 sleep deprived and the other group they 00:17:48.26\00:17:50.82 let them sleep, okay. And then they gave them 00:17:50.83\00:17:53.79 both influenza viruses while the grew up 00:17:53.80\00:17:57.20 they were sleep deprived contracted the flu 00:17:57.21\00:18:00.07 as though they had never been immunized 00:18:00.08\00:18:02.08 compared to the other group. 00:18:02.09\00:18:04.17 So, you could do everything you know 00:18:04.18\00:18:07.04 right as far as getting your usual immunizations 00:18:07.05\00:18:10.16 and so forth, but if you don't get your sleep, 00:18:10.17\00:18:12.40 it really does you no good. I heard meditation 00:18:12.41\00:18:15.06 is really good as well as a form of building 00:18:15.07\00:18:17.58 your immune system. Yes, meditation does 00:18:17.59\00:18:20.37 improves the immune system according 00:18:20.38\00:18:22.08 to a study in 2003. Now, you told me there 00:18:22.09\00:18:25.39 was a study that was done down in Georgia 00:18:25.40\00:18:27.37 about taking a day out of the week to rest. 00:18:27.38\00:18:29.88 People thought maybe that helps reduce stress, 00:18:29.89\00:18:32.65 definitely taking a day off you don't have 00:18:32.66\00:18:34.27 to worry about anything. That's right you know 00:18:34.28\00:18:36.57 Seventh-day Adventist have been studied 00:18:36.58\00:18:38.41 a lot because they live longer, they have 00:18:38.42\00:18:40.23 few of diseases. This was a study out of Georgia 00:18:40.24\00:18:43.19 where they were checking their immune systems, 00:18:43.20\00:18:45.38 they found that Seventh-day Adventist 00:18:45.39\00:18:48.33 had higher levels of immune stimulating 00:18:48.34\00:18:51.27 antioxidants. Those who are vegetarian 00:18:51.28\00:18:53.65 even had better antioxidant levels. 00:18:53.66\00:18:57.03 Well, Amber, here we sit today, 00:18:57.04\00:18:58.94 we're thinking about exercise and I'm just 00:18:58.95\00:19:01.45 thinking you must know some about exercises 00:19:01.46\00:19:03.47 as a Physical Therapist. Well, many of our 00:19:03.48\00:19:05.35 patients benefit significantly from 00:19:05.36\00:19:07.21 getting on a regular exercise program, 00:19:07.22\00:19:08.69 that's for sure. I bet you're a real drill 00:19:08.70\00:19:11.00 surgeon. That's right, do you reps 00:19:11.01\00:19:13.82 and do them now. Does it really make a 00:19:13.83\00:19:16.11 difference though in the immune system? 00:19:16.12\00:19:17.35 Well, studies have shown so actually, 00:19:17.36\00:19:19.33 they took a bunch of people and say those 00:19:19.34\00:19:21.82 didn't moderate exercise and find out 00:19:21.83\00:19:24.00 they significantly reduce their risk for upper 00:19:24.01\00:19:26.10 respiratory tract infections. 00:19:26.11\00:19:27.62 Wow, which is great for the flu because 00:19:27.63\00:19:29.52 that's basically what's it happened. 00:19:29.53\00:19:31.20 I guess I better go run a marathon that, 00:19:31.21\00:19:33.22 if you over exert yourself that can 00:19:33.23\00:19:35.80 actually hurt your immune system. 00:19:35.81\00:19:37.60 In fact as you age, they attend to find 00:19:37.61\00:19:41.21 that your immune system declines 00:19:41.22\00:19:42.97 but natural killer cells respond positively 00:19:42.98\00:19:45.75 to introducing moderate exercise 00:19:45.76\00:19:47.70 and it actually increases the number 00:19:47.71\00:19:50.17 and the function of the killer cells. 00:19:50.18\00:19:52.47 Shall I go get on my treadmill in my closet 00:19:52.48\00:19:55.11 you know do a mile or two. 00:19:55.12\00:19:56.99 Well, you could do that, but fresh air is 00:19:57.00\00:19:59.38 even better if you go outside then. 00:19:59.39\00:20:01.12 We say that perfect health depends on, 00:20:01.13\00:20:03.83 perfect circulation, perfect circulation. 00:20:03.84\00:20:06.46 Well, if you go outdoors and you put on a big 00:20:06.47\00:20:10.38 warm vest, some people have the idea 00:20:10.39\00:20:12.58 that the heart, lungs, that's the furnace room, 00:20:12.59\00:20:14.75 it keep it will warm blood out. 00:20:14.76\00:20:17.29 But the rest of you is practically naked. 00:20:17.30\00:20:19.16 You limbs are out this makes it so the blood 00:20:19.17\00:20:23.19 moves up from the legs up to your abdomen 00:20:23.20\00:20:26.57 and up to your chest and your brain 00:20:26.58\00:20:28.12 and you congest the blood in your head, 00:20:28.13\00:20:30.20 abdomen, and pelvis. If your blood is all 00:20:30.21\00:20:31.91 congested in your chest and in your head 00:20:31.92\00:20:34.16 then you won't be able to have a good 00:20:34.17\00:20:37.45 immune system in that area. 00:20:37.46\00:20:38.68 That's right, just kind of like trying to get 00:20:38.69\00:20:40.11 an emergency vehicle on and off the free 00:20:40.12\00:20:42.78 way when you're in rush-hour traffic. 00:20:42.79\00:20:44.64 If there's too many cars on the road, 00:20:44.65\00:20:46.54 nothing is gonna happened. 00:20:46.55\00:20:47.89 And so one of the important principles 00:20:47.90\00:20:50.47 is making sure your whole body is covered evenly. 00:20:50.48\00:20:54.03 Other things take into consideration, 00:20:54.04\00:20:56.45 is your circulation how that's effecting 00:20:56.46\00:20:58.35 with your clothing. Study show that 00:20:58.36\00:21:00.23 if you have too tight a belt or elastic around 00:21:00.24\00:21:03.79 your waist it slows your transit time 00:21:03.80\00:21:07.29 of your bowels, it slows your bowels 00:21:07.30\00:21:09.50 and if you have too tight a construction 00:21:09.51\00:21:12.45 around your chest and you can breathe as well. 00:21:12.46\00:21:15.01 You'll have both air movement problems 00:21:15.02\00:21:17.77 and blood movements problems, clothing 00:21:17.78\00:21:20.25 that fits comfortably but not tight it helps 00:21:20.26\00:21:23.25 the circulation to be more even through 00:21:23.26\00:21:25.85 your body. Well, you know they say, 00:21:25.86\00:21:27.55 an apple a day keeps you away, keeps the 00:21:27.56\00:21:30.47 doctor away. Proper diet it's very important, 00:21:30.48\00:21:33.53 that's true very good, well lets get started. 00:21:33.54\00:21:36.51 Well, first of all we did some studies on people 00:21:36.52\00:21:40.38 who were eating a lot of fat. 00:21:40.39\00:21:42.58 Now, define a high fat diet for me? 00:21:42.59\00:21:45.24 Well, a high fat diet will be a diet that 00:21:45.25\00:21:47.59 has more than 17 percent of calories 00:21:47.60\00:21:50.22 coming from fat, okay. And so that's 00:21:50.23\00:21:52.99 pretty a big restriction there, the average 00:21:53.00\00:21:55.10 American diet's about 40 percent fat, wow. 00:21:55.11\00:21:57.79 And so if people are eating a normal amount 00:21:57.80\00:22:01.32 of fat according to the American diet, 00:22:01.33\00:22:03.68 it cut their immune systems in half, 00:22:03.69\00:22:06.10 knocked out the natural killers cells, 00:22:06.11\00:22:08.07 if they're on a high fat diet which you know 00:22:08.08\00:22:10.46 people eat a lot of junk food are, yeah they 00:22:10.47\00:22:13.56 had a 79 percent reduction in natural 00:22:13.57\00:22:16.64 killer cell activity. Wow, but if they were on 00:22:16.65\00:22:19.13 a low fat diet I eat 10 to 15 percent of 00:22:19.14\00:22:22.03 calories coming from fat then their natural 00:22:22.04\00:22:24.72 killer cell activity was increased compared 00:22:24.73\00:22:27.13 to high fat diet. So, you can just completely 00:22:27.14\00:22:30.45 knock out your immune system right there, 00:22:30.46\00:22:31.88 it doesn't matter if eat all the vegetables 00:22:31.89\00:22:33.21 you want, if go follow up with a bag of 00:22:33.22\00:22:35.14 potato chips and soda you just dropped 00:22:35.15\00:22:37.37 your immune system way back down again. 00:22:37.38\00:22:39.39 That's right and the type of fat is important too, 00:22:39.40\00:22:42.02 a high cholesterol diet was studied in one case 00:22:42.03\00:22:45.20 and when they studied the high 00:22:45.21\00:22:46.70 cholesterol diet they found out that it 00:22:46.71\00:22:48.75 knocked out the natural killer cell activity, 00:22:48.76\00:22:51.67 it reduced it down to 1/4 the usual activity. 00:22:51.68\00:22:55.73 Now, do you find cholesterol in fruits 00:22:55.74\00:22:57.46 and vegetables? You know, fruits and vegetables 00:22:57.47\00:22:59.86 don't have any cholesterol, it takes 00:22:59.87\00:23:01.67 a liver to make cholesterol and the fruit 00:23:01.68\00:23:03.83 you know a banana doesn't have a liver. 00:23:03.84\00:23:06.02 So, any type of animal products then 00:23:06.03\00:23:08.22 is our main source of cholesterol. 00:23:08.23\00:23:10.29 That's right if it has a face well; 00:23:10.30\00:23:12.45 if it had eyes don't eat it. 00:23:12.46\00:23:14.31 It also reduces the interferon production, 00:23:14.32\00:23:20.90 well you mentioned cholesterol coming 00:23:20.91\00:23:22.83 from something that had a liver, milk comes 00:23:22.84\00:23:24.58 from cows. Oh! Yeah, it most effect our 00:23:24.59\00:23:27.07 interferon levels and killer cell activity, 00:23:27.08\00:23:29.60 they did a study in rats and mice, 00:23:29.61\00:23:32.82 they found out drinking milk greatly reduced 00:23:32.83\00:23:36.50 the natural killer cell activity. 00:23:36.51\00:23:38.78 Sounds that way, you've talked about 00:23:38.79\00:23:40.11 fat and cholesterol as part of your diet and, 00:23:40.12\00:23:42.56 and milk and all those things but I can still 00:23:42.57\00:23:45.59 have sugar on my oatmeal right. 00:23:45.60\00:23:47.67 Well, if you beg me enough, actually 00:23:47.68\00:23:51.61 it doesn't matter what I say your immune 00:23:51.62\00:23:53.44 system will tell you. That's right, and they 00:23:53.45\00:23:55.23 studied a bunch of mice and they fed them 00:23:55.24\00:23:57.65 a high table sugar diet and it greatly reduced 00:23:57.66\00:24:01.98 their immune systems. It was not good, 00:24:01.99\00:24:04.97 taking everything away, taking everything 00:24:04.98\00:24:07.10 away, yeah. This is very good to know, 00:24:07.11\00:24:09.11 I wanna know how to strengthen 00:24:09.12\00:24:10.27 my immune system, so you're saying go 00:24:10.28\00:24:12.00 easy on the sugar well why? What does it 00:24:12.01\00:24:13.67 do to my body? Well, you know sugar has 00:24:13.68\00:24:16.36 a way of disarming your white cells. 00:24:16.37\00:24:19.79 They were just as you eat sugar as eating bacteria. 00:24:19.80\00:24:22.92 They did a study where they took a bunch 00:24:22.93\00:24:25.03 of people and they took their white cells 00:24:25.04\00:24:28.28 and they found out that each white cell during 00:24:28.29\00:24:30.70 a day, during 12 hour period could eat 14 00:24:30.71\00:24:34.36 bacteria. Well, that's good, that's great, 00:24:34.37\00:24:37.05 eat the bacteria, these are bad bacteria 00:24:37.06\00:24:38.94 that could cause disease, and then they 00:24:38.95\00:24:40.89 gave the person a 12 teaspoon dose of sugar. 00:24:40.90\00:24:44.71 Now, what common food would have 12 teaspoon 00:24:44.72\00:24:47.47 of sugar. Well, I think soda pop has 11 00:24:47.48\00:24:50.08 and 12 teaspoons in it, that's right 1 soda pop 00:24:50.09\00:24:52.67 and when they gave them one soda pop those 00:24:52.68\00:24:55.08 white cells could only gobble up 5 or 6 bacteria. 00:24:55.09\00:25:00.17 Less than half, less than half and they had 00:25:00.18\00:25:02.53 two soda pop and it reduce the number of 00:25:02.54\00:25:04.61 bacteria that the white cell could eat 00:25:04.62\00:25:06.39 to one in a day. So, pretty much disarmed 00:25:06.40\00:25:09.57 the white cells, oh! Yes, and the average 00:25:09.58\00:25:11.56 American gets about 32 teaspoons of sugar 00:25:11.57\00:25:15.69 a day. Well, alright, I get rid of my sugar out 00:25:15.70\00:25:19.02 with the cholesterol and fat, brings on 00:25:19.03\00:25:21.83 some beef. Oh! Boy, studies of mice 00:25:21.84\00:25:27.09 where they fed them at 25 percent protein 00:25:27.10\00:25:29.46 diet showed that it reduced their natural 00:25:29.47\00:25:31.89 killer cell activity. The best diet for the mice 00:25:31.90\00:25:34.43 was to have about a 5 percent protein diet. 00:25:34.44\00:25:37.76 Beef had a liver, yeah Beef had a liver. 00:25:37.77\00:25:40.21 So, we wanna get our protein from somewhere 00:25:40.22\00:25:41.19 else, that's right, that's exactly right 00:25:41.20\00:25:45.03 and why would we get our protein Amber, 00:25:45.04\00:25:46.83 I'm trying to think of a good source. 00:25:46.84\00:25:48.95 Well, I hear soy is the new trendy food out 00:25:48.96\00:25:53.59 there, from the studies I understand that soy 00:25:53.60\00:25:56.43 has shown benefit for people who have the flu. 00:25:56.44\00:25:59.00 Doesn't just benefit the flu, but also helps 00:25:59.01\00:26:00.69 for cancer, because there are such strong 00:26:00.70\00:26:02.72 antioxidant properties and it's a very potent 00:26:02.73\00:26:05.17 immune simulator. Wow, well we all better go get 00:26:05.18\00:26:08.54 our soybeans, that's right. When I was in 00:26:08.55\00:26:11.84 high school I had a friend that decided 00:26:11.85\00:26:13.89 to go on what he called a raw food diet. 00:26:13.90\00:26:16.52 While we're busy eating other things, 00:26:16.53\00:26:18.36 he's eating this big bowl salad everyday, 00:26:18.37\00:26:20.50 you know you can only how imagine 00:26:20.51\00:26:22.02 how much we teased the guy. 00:26:22.03\00:26:23.57 And then a few years ago, I, I got a hold 00:26:23.58\00:26:27.71 of him, talked to him on the phone 00:26:27.72\00:26:28.87 I says how you're doing he says great, 00:26:28.88\00:26:30.95 I said are you still on your raw food diet. 00:26:30.96\00:26:32.63 He says, I sure am, I say how's that going? 00:26:32.64\00:26:35.23 He says great you know in 25 years 00:26:35.24\00:26:37.61 I've not had a flu or cold or any illness. 00:26:37.62\00:26:40.92 He says, before I went on that diet 00:26:40.93\00:26:43.08 I was sick all the time, snot in the winter time, 00:26:43.09\00:26:45.64 colds, flu and so forth. Lovely, yeah lovely, 00:26:45.65\00:26:49.67 but the studies have shown that a fresh 00:26:49.68\00:26:53.15 food diet, fresh fruits and fresh vegetables 00:26:53.16\00:26:55.95 greatly stimulate the immune system and 00:26:55.96\00:26:58.43 definitely reduce the incidence of illnesses. 00:26:58.44\00:27:02.07 So, not only was he eating none of the things 00:27:02.08\00:27:04.82 we've talked about to avoid, but he was 00:27:04.83\00:27:06.13 just really eating a lot of raw fruits 00:27:06.14\00:27:08.37 and vegetables so, yeah, that's fantastic, 00:27:08.38\00:27:10.46 just kicking that immune system going. 00:27:10.47\00:27:12.06 Oh! Yes, greatly increasing the immune system, 00:27:12.07\00:27:15.10 sounds like he was on a plant based diet. 00:27:15.11\00:27:17.10 Yes, definitely, so what can we get from 00:27:17.11\00:27:18.70 plants that strengthens our immune system? 00:27:18.71\00:27:20.60 You know, plants are high in all kinds of 00:27:20.61\00:27:23.37 vitamins, they did a study comparing 00:27:23.38\00:27:25.50 omnivores and vegans, that's a total vegetarian 00:27:25.51\00:27:28.93 in that study they found out that vegetarians 00:27:28.94\00:27:32.01 had three times the amount of Vitamin C, 00:27:32.02\00:27:34.88 three times amount of Vitamin E, almost three 00:27:34.89\00:27:37.36 times amount of Vitamin A, they had more copper, 00:27:37.37\00:27:40.51 they were a little bit low in zinc and sodium 00:27:40.52\00:27:43.63 and we're gonna talk about those, because 00:27:43.64\00:27:45.60 those are things that are vegetarian want 00:27:45.61\00:27:47.40 to boost. But they were not too high 00:27:47.41\00:27:52.12 on cholesterol either, so that was a good 00:27:52.13\00:27:53.83 thing, that's right. They turned around 00:27:53.84\00:27:55.40 and tested their blood to see if the intake 00:27:55.41\00:27:57.70 of this increased amount of nutrients 00:27:57.71\00:27:59.84 made a difference in their blood sure 00:27:59.85\00:28:01.30 enough they had more Vitamin A, C and E 00:28:01.31\00:28:03.21 in their blood and their natural killer 00:28:03.22\00:28:05.44 cell was twice that of omnivores. 00:28:05.45\00:28:07.80 Fantastic, it goes back to our study about the 00:28:07.81\00:28:10.58 Adventist in Georgia, yes, you said doing better 00:28:10.59\00:28:13.37 than the people around and when, especially 00:28:13.38\00:28:14.77 when they're vegetarian. Apples, apples, they are 00:28:14.78\00:28:17.46 still my personal favorites can I keep 00:28:17.47\00:28:18.81 eating apples. Yeah, apples are great an 00:28:18.82\00:28:21.21 apple a day keeps the doctor away, but there 00:28:21.22\00:28:22.85 is a little bit of truth to that. 00:28:22.86\00:28:24.51 Modern medical science has shown that 00:28:24.52\00:28:27.47 apples actually improve lung function, 00:28:27.48\00:28:29.99 interesting and since it's your lungs 00:28:30.00\00:28:32.30 that are going to be attacked by the virus. 00:28:32.31\00:28:34.89 You want to have good lungs, what's more, 00:28:34.90\00:28:37.46 apples contain phytochemicals, 00:28:37.47\00:28:39.84 those are basically Vitamins that haven't 00:28:39.85\00:28:41.24 gotten a letter name because they came long 00:28:41.25\00:28:43.47 after the letter people were putting out letters. 00:28:43.48\00:28:45.53 But phytochemicals actually in apples will 00:28:45.54\00:28:48.95 inhibit influenza viruses. Fantastic, keep eating 00:28:48.96\00:28:54.45 apples, yeah keep eating your apples. 00:28:54.46\00:28:56.47 Now, another way I hear to keep people 00:28:56.48\00:28:58.62 away is garlic, keep people away is garlic. 00:28:58.63\00:29:03.01 Apple a day keeps the doctor away 00:29:03.02\00:29:04.35 and garlic keeps everyone else away, 00:29:04.36\00:29:05.96 and it keeps influenza virus away as well. 00:29:05.97\00:29:09.21 Well, that's good, yeah you bet, 00:29:09.22\00:29:10.66 in fact there was a study they did where 00:29:10.67\00:29:13.29 they actually gave people a garlic 00:29:13.30\00:29:15.93 supplement pill. Those that had the garlic 00:29:15.94\00:29:19.18 supplement pill had 60 percent fewer 00:29:19.19\00:29:22.71 influenza infections during the winter than 00:29:22.72\00:29:25.05 those who didn't take it, interesting. 00:29:25.06\00:29:26.92 And there is a relative to garlic and that's 00:29:26.93\00:29:30.09 the onion, what do you know about onions? 00:29:30.10\00:29:32.31 Yeah, there's a particular product in onions 00:29:32.32\00:29:34.33 called Quercetin and it actually protects 00:29:34.34\00:29:36.09 against oxidative stress and lung damage, 00:29:36.10\00:29:39.90 the epithelial damage to the wall cause 00:29:39.91\00:29:41.61 by the flu, influenza, so just like apples 00:29:41.62\00:29:45.27 and green leafy vegetables and beans, 00:29:45.28\00:29:47.05 the onion is very good for your immune system 00:29:47.06\00:29:48.90 and protecting your lung tissue. 00:29:48.91\00:29:50.47 And that's what the problem is in flu that 00:29:50.48\00:29:52.77 kills your lungs. And so eating onions, 00:29:52.78\00:29:55.09 yeah and garlic could be a good way of keeping 00:29:55.10\00:29:58.34 your lungs in good shape. That's very true, 00:29:58.35\00:30:01.33 now a personal favorite I hear many, many 00:30:01.34\00:30:04.88 people say that if you have wine it helps 00:30:04.89\00:30:07.66 you out, but what is it about the wine, 00:30:07.67\00:30:09.16 it's in the grapes right that helps with that 00:30:09.17\00:30:10.74 properties for immune system. 00:30:10.75\00:30:12.16 As we've talked about earlier alcohol depresses 00:30:12.17\00:30:15.45 the immune system, but the properties in 00:30:15.46\00:30:18.19 grapes that are good can begotten from 00:30:18.20\00:30:20.10 the grape you don't have to you know rot 00:30:20.11\00:30:22.12 the grape in order to get it. 00:30:22.13\00:30:23.60 And in fact there is a phytochemical in grapes, 00:30:23.61\00:30:27.36 resveratrol that strongly inhibits the replication 00:30:27.37\00:30:32.30 of influenza viruses insight the cells. 00:30:32.31\00:30:36.05 Well, I know something that looks like grapes 00:30:36.06\00:30:38.50 elderberry, elderberry extract has actually 00:30:38.51\00:30:41.30 been shown to have some antiviral properties 00:30:41.31\00:30:44.20 against influenza A, can help with actually 00:30:44.21\00:30:47.57 effecting the viral load. Do you ever eat white 00:30:47.58\00:30:50.96 bread? No actually. Well, I was told that 00:30:50.97\00:30:54.83 it didn't have much nutrient value, 00:30:54.84\00:30:56.34 but doesn't it taste better than brown bread? 00:30:56.35\00:30:58.38 Yes, lots of peanut butter and jelly on it, 00:30:58.39\00:31:03.34 it's very good. If somebody is only 00:31:03.35\00:31:07.67 getting 50 percent of the USRDA of vitamins, 00:31:07.68\00:31:11.03 their natural killer cell activity was greatly 00:31:11.04\00:31:13.73 depressed. We wanna make sure we get 00:31:13.74\00:31:16.54 enough of the good vitamins, well how about 00:31:16.55\00:31:19.40 Folic? If you're deficient in folic acid, 00:31:19.41\00:31:22.95 they have shown that, that will reduce 00:31:22.96\00:31:24.90 your immune system both lymphocyte counts 00:31:24.91\00:31:27.77 and natural killer cell activity by 60 percent. 00:31:27.78\00:31:31.31 Well, great, I'll go buy a pill, oh! Boy, well 00:31:31.32\00:31:34.00 you know that's I',m glad you mention that 00:31:34.01\00:31:36.45 and pills are not the answer, really. 00:31:36.46\00:31:38.75 They did a study, they take a bunch of people, 00:31:38.76\00:31:41.03 they found out they were deficient fully, 00:31:41.04\00:31:43.37 one group they split them in half, one group 00:31:43.38\00:31:45.92 they fed a good diet, raised their natural 00:31:45.93\00:31:48.35 killer cell activity backup increase their bodies 00:31:48.36\00:31:50.88 stores in fully. The other group they gave a 00:31:50.89\00:31:52.60 supplement to, the people who got the food 00:31:52.61\00:31:56.71 had a better response in their immune system 00:31:56.72\00:31:59.24 than those they got the pill, then they got 00:31:59.25\00:32:01.06 their bright idea, well we'll give the pill to 00:32:01.07\00:32:03.29 the people who are getting good food too. 00:32:03.30\00:32:05.73 Sounds good. Will really boost it, double it, 00:32:05.74\00:32:07.26 double their effect, at the end of the study 00:32:07.27\00:32:10.01 the people who are eating the good food 00:32:10.02\00:32:12.03 and took the pill their immune system was 00:32:12.04\00:32:14.18 worse then if they had not eating their diet 00:32:14.19\00:32:17.41 or taking the pill. So, actually counteracted 00:32:17.42\00:32:19.86 the effect of their good diet then. 00:32:19.87\00:32:21.61 That's exactly right, well tell me what kind 00:32:21.62\00:32:24.00 of food I should eat to get my folic? 00:32:24.01\00:32:25.92 What food has good folic, the USRDA is 00:32:25.93\00:32:29.09 about 400mcgs and if you look at 100gms of food: 00:32:29.10\00:32:34.17 Arrowroot has a lot, it has 338: 00:32:34.18\00:32:37.60 Wheat germ has a lot, Peanuts, 00:32:37.61\00:32:39.53 Sunflower seeds, Spinach, Lentils, 00:32:39.54\00:32:41.51 Pinto beans, Parsley, lot of Oats have some. 00:32:41.52\00:32:46.06 One thing I let you know, there are some foods 00:32:46.07\00:32:48.95 have none, and when a food has none, 00:32:48.96\00:32:51.46 it tends to deplete the system of what, 00:32:51.47\00:32:53.44 what folic acid you do have. 00:32:53.45\00:32:55.64 So, it actually drags out what's in there with it, 00:32:55.65\00:32:57.70 yeah, yeah makes the body use up it stores. 00:32:57.71\00:33:00.67 Instead of providing some Corn oil, 00:33:00.68\00:33:03.33 I mean oil doesn't have folic acid, Potato chips, 00:33:03.34\00:33:06.79 you know Soda pop, and there's a lot of foods 00:33:06.80\00:33:08.79 there are just basically nutrient depleted. 00:33:08.80\00:33:11.79 How about Vitamin A start at the beginning? 00:33:11.80\00:33:14.26 Yes, A deficiency of Vitamin A reduces 00:33:14.27\00:33:17.56 natural killer cell, number and function. 00:33:17.57\00:33:21.72 And so you wanna make sure you have 00:33:21.73\00:33:23.74 enough Vitamin A, Vitamin A deficiency 00:33:23.75\00:33:26.16 also results in a loss of IgA producing cells. 00:33:26.17\00:33:29.68 Those B-Cells that we said were the second 00:33:29.69\00:33:31.82 line of defense when you're attacked by an 00:33:31.83\00:33:34.90 influenza virus. Now, you said taking the pill 00:33:34.91\00:33:37.86 to get folic acid is not a good idea, 00:33:37.87\00:33:39.85 can I take a Vitamin A supplement in a pill form? 00:33:39.86\00:33:43.24 You know, that's a good question because 00:33:43.25\00:33:45.05 in America we commercialize everything, 00:33:45.06\00:33:47.97 if we find out that you know fiber is good. 00:33:47.98\00:33:50.80 Well, we have fiber that you can buy and eat, 00:33:50.81\00:33:54.24 yeah you can eat your white bread and send 00:33:54.25\00:33:56.75 a fiber chaser after it, that's right. 00:33:56.76\00:33:59.23 But you say the foods that we eat normally 00:33:59.24\00:34:03.92 have good nutrient and taking a pill has 00:34:03.93\00:34:07.01 not proven helpful. Vitamin A in Finland 00:34:07.02\00:34:09.96 they did a study on lung cancer, 00:34:09.97\00:34:12.06 they found out after they've studied 00:34:12.07\00:34:13.76 the population, that the population the 00:34:13.77\00:34:16.17 people who had a higher serum level of Vitamin A 00:34:16.18\00:34:19.31 and Vitamin E for that matter had lower lung 00:34:19.32\00:34:22.06 cancer rates. Well, lets feed everybody pills, 00:34:22.07\00:34:25.39 so everybody got a pill, Vitamin A and Vitamin E, 00:34:25.40\00:34:28.23 lo and behold the lung cancer rates went up, 00:34:28.24\00:34:30.93 not down. Interesting, they says what's the 00:34:30.94\00:34:33.54 matter here, same thing in America, 00:34:33.55\00:34:35.35 prostate cancer did a similar study found out 00:34:35.36\00:34:37.81 that people who had higher serum levels, 00:34:37.82\00:34:40.20 body levels of Vitamin A and Vitamin E had 00:34:40.21\00:34:42.54 lower cancer rates of prostate cancer okay. 00:34:42.55\00:34:46.38 Let's feed them all the pills, yes pull out 00:34:46.39\00:34:48.54 the pills, gave them the pills, Vitamin A pills, 00:34:48.55\00:34:51.63 Vitamin E pills, wow what happened? 00:34:51.64\00:34:54.86 Up went the cancer rates again. 00:34:54.87\00:34:56.61 You see, lets just take Vitamin A for a minute, 00:34:56.62\00:35:00.12 yeah if you eat a carrot; a carrot has 00:35:00.13\00:35:04.31 273 different active forms of Vitamin A, 00:35:04.32\00:35:08.76 if you get the pill you get what? And it may 00:35:08.77\00:35:11.69 not be active, if you get the pill then your 00:35:11.70\00:35:15.46 deficient in 272, well how do you know 00:35:15.47\00:35:18.05 they picked the right one to put the pill? 00:35:18.06\00:35:20.07 Well, best way is to eat the carrot and 00:35:20.08\00:35:25.05 same thing with Vitamin E, will talk about 00:35:25.06\00:35:27.72 Vitamin in a minute. But sources of Vitamin A, 00:35:27.73\00:35:30.87 Paprika, Cayenne peppers, Sweet potatoes, 00:35:30.88\00:35:34.43 Carrots, Kale, Spinach, Squash, Cantaloupe, 00:35:34.44\00:35:38.26 even Broccoli. Now, you know they 4 to 5 some 00:35:38.27\00:35:42.10 foods is Vitamin A and you know Eggs, 00:35:42.11\00:35:44.74 Chickens, Beef there is no Vitamin A, 00:35:44.75\00:35:47.09 you're not going to you know fight off 00:35:47.10\00:35:50.16 the flu with a big steak, it just won't work. 00:35:50.17\00:35:52.61 No, so that's not necessarily the way 00:35:52.62\00:35:54.64 to go. Well, you had mentioned Vitamin A 00:35:54.65\00:35:57.48 and Vitamin E is a two Vitamin sources 00:35:57.49\00:35:59.29 that they tested for people with prostate 00:35:59.30\00:36:01.29 cancer, or lung cancer. Well, Vitamin E is very 00:36:01.30\00:36:03.93 important for the influenza, the number 00:36:03.94\00:36:07.56 of viruses in your lungs is reduced 00:36:07.57\00:36:10.82 if you have a good body store Vitamin E, 00:36:10.83\00:36:13.48 interesting. And it also prevents you from 00:36:13.49\00:36:17.43 getting too much lung inflammation; 00:36:17.44\00:36:19.55 it reduces that cytokine storm affect, 00:36:19.56\00:36:22.24 so having enough Vitamin E in your 00:36:22.25\00:36:24.26 body is important. So your better start now, 00:36:24.27\00:36:26.53 don't wait till the flu shows up, then decide 00:36:26.54\00:36:28.56 you're gonna eat wheat germ and 00:36:28.57\00:36:29.76 you know almonds and so forth. 00:36:29.77\00:36:31.41 You need to have a good diet now so 00:36:31.42\00:36:33.28 your body stores of this food raw. 00:36:33.29\00:36:35.96 The other thing that happens in the flu is 00:36:35.97\00:36:38.40 the flu shuts down your brain, it does 00:36:38.41\00:36:41.44 in a number of ways, it sends your brain into 00:36:41.45\00:36:43.32 alpha ways that also shuts down your immune system, 00:36:43.33\00:36:46.48 sleep. But it also makes it so you 00:36:46.49\00:36:49.03 don't feel like eating, and Vitamin E will help 00:36:49.04\00:36:52.91 keep your appetite up. So, Vitamin C what kind 00:38:34.26\00:38:38.10 of foods have good Vitamin C Dr. Bell? 00:38:38.11\00:38:40.87 Well, I saw that gentlemen eating 00:38:40.88\00:38:42.62 strawberries on the slide. Yeah, so definitely 00:38:42.63\00:38:45.80 strawberries are a good source also, 00:38:45.81\00:38:47.12 Bell peppers, Bell peppers, Chives, Red cabbage, 00:38:47.13\00:38:50.73 Red cabbage, you see Broccoli all through here, 00:38:50.74\00:38:53.13 Broccoli seems to be a good source of many 00:38:53.14\00:38:54.41 things, Pineapple, Citrus Oranges and Lemons, 00:38:54.42\00:38:57.84 cooked Kale, Cauliflower, Peas, Potatoes, 00:38:57.85\00:39:02.72 but the couple of things don't have Vitamin C, 00:39:02.73\00:39:05.10 yeah, as you mention several others like Tea 00:39:05.11\00:39:06.72 and Coffee, Salmon. You mean there is a not 00:39:06.73\00:39:09.65 in fish, no, no Vitamin C in fish. 00:39:09.66\00:39:12.77 Well, you know I mentioned that 00:39:12.78\00:39:14.48 vegetarians are possibly low on selenium, 00:39:14.49\00:39:18.14 but if you get a good selenium build up 00:39:18.15\00:39:21.31 in your body it will increase natural killer 00:39:21.32\00:39:24.33 cell activity by 70 percent. 00:39:24.34\00:39:26.49 Fantastic, what's more it helps protect 00:39:26.50\00:39:28.96 the lungs, it reduces the cytokine storm, 00:39:28.97\00:39:31.58 it makes so the lung tissues don't get as 00:39:31.59\00:39:33.38 damaged and they recover faster after 00:39:33.39\00:39:36.21 the flu's been through. Fantastic so, you saying, 00:39:36.22\00:39:39.16 its difficult to find where do we get it? 00:39:39.17\00:39:40.62 So, the best source is Brazil nuts, Brazil nuts, 00:39:40.63\00:39:43.72 I mean in fact one brazil nuts is almost 00:39:43.73\00:39:46.18 like a Vitamin pill. It's just incredible 00:39:46.19\00:39:49.41 in 100gms of Brazil nuts, there is 1900mcg 00:39:49.42\00:39:55.95 of selenium. And the USRDA recommends 70, 00:39:55.96\00:40:00.50 yeah, so you really getting funny there. 00:40:00.51\00:40:02.72 So, have a brazil nut a day along with your 00:40:02.73\00:40:04.86 apple, right, keep your doctor away. 00:40:04.87\00:40:06.78 It makes nuts probably because there's 00:40:06.79\00:40:08.51 brazil nuts there, Sesame seeds, 00:40:08.52\00:40:10.30 Sunflower seeds, you remember we 00:40:10.31\00:40:11.70 mentioned sunflower seeds before, very good. 00:40:11.71\00:40:13.70 Wheat germ, Amaranth flakes, Oat bran, 00:40:13.71\00:40:16.92 Barley, Tofu, White flour, even has a little 00:40:16.93\00:40:20.33 interestingly enough, brown sugar does not 00:40:20.34\00:40:24.32 have much. So, you wanna make sure 00:40:24.33\00:40:26.57 you're not trying to get your source from 00:40:26.58\00:40:27.75 brown sugar, butter, none you know. 00:40:27.76\00:40:30.61 And I guess we're kind of picking on foods 00:40:30.62\00:40:33.25 that are nutrient, that's right, for. 00:40:33.26\00:40:35.84 But you know there is a number of elements 00:40:35.85\00:40:38.80 that are important for your immune system. 00:40:38.81\00:40:40.61 Well you mentioned again selenium and zinc 00:40:40.62\00:40:42.30 I mean the two things the vegetarians are 00:40:42.31\00:40:43.83 usually low on, so I need my brazil nuts, 00:40:43.84\00:40:45.88 what do I need for zinc and why does that 00:40:45.89\00:40:47.34 help my immune system? Well zinc is necessary 00:40:47.35\00:40:49.52 for natural killer cell activity and it stimulates 00:40:49.53\00:40:53.26 the immune system. Your immune system needs 00:40:53.27\00:40:55.48 more the amount that it takes to help you grow, 00:40:55.49\00:40:58.78 the requirements are higher. 00:40:58.79\00:41:00.51 So, USRDA of zinc is 15mgs a day and good 00:41:00.52\00:41:07.22 sources are Wheat germ, Pumpkin seeds, 00:41:07.23\00:41:09.96 Sesame seeds, Wheat bran, Pine nuts, Wild rice, 00:41:09.97\00:41:14.75 Cashew nuts, Caraway seeds, if you're 00:41:14.76\00:41:18.05 looking again at Hard candy, it has none Beef 00:41:18.06\00:41:21.61 tallow none, Shortening, you know there is a 00:41:21.62\00:41:23.73 few foods just aren't going to sustain life 00:41:23.74\00:41:26.61 during the flu pandemic. Alright, well Amber 00:41:26.62\00:41:30.29 we've talked about lot of foods. 00:41:30.30\00:41:31.84 I'm just thinking I wish I had list of just 00:41:31.85\00:41:33.80 you know few things I could eat. 00:41:33.81\00:41:35.55 What would you suggest I eat in the 00:41:35.56\00:41:37.52 way of vegetables? Well, Garlic, yeah, 00:41:37.53\00:41:40.26 Onions, okay, Carrots, Kale, Spinach and 00:41:40.27\00:41:43.36 Broccoli, okay, all excellent sources 00:41:43.37\00:41:45.81 of many of the vitamins that we've talked about. 00:41:45.82\00:41:47.55 And you know we've mentioned a few fruits 00:41:47.56\00:41:49.60 what would you suggest I eat in the 00:41:49.61\00:41:50.97 way of fruits that will be helpful? 00:41:50.98\00:41:52.45 Well, definitely Apples and Strawberries, 00:41:52.46\00:41:54.36 Grapes and Citrus all excellent sources again 00:41:54.37\00:41:56.88 of the vitamins that we need to keep our 00:41:56.89\00:41:58.29 Immune system especially strong. 00:41:58.30\00:42:00.00 Okay, are there some foods that you're 00:42:00.01\00:42:01.90 just nuts about? Brazil nuts, Brazil nuts, 00:42:01.91\00:42:05.73 that's right and Pine nuts, also seeds 00:42:05.74\00:42:08.12 you mentioned many seed that are very 00:42:08.13\00:42:09.37 high in Vitamins like Sunflower seeds, 00:42:09.38\00:42:10.96 Sesame and Pumpkin seeds. And just overall 00:42:10.97\00:42:13.64 fresh raw foods, Soy, Wheat germ, 00:42:13.65\00:42:16.35 Turmeric also very good source of the 00:42:16.36\00:42:18.52 Vitamins we need to keep our immune 00:42:18.53\00:42:19.93 system strong. Turmeric is very healthful 00:42:19.94\00:42:22.27 because it is not only high in Vitamins, 00:42:22.28\00:42:25.41 but it helps the immune system fight inflammation. 00:42:25.42\00:42:29.56 Well, you know we basically been talking 00:42:29.57\00:42:32.08 about a diet that comes from the Bible 00:42:32.09\00:42:34.77 haven't we. Described in the Garden of Eden: 00:42:34.78\00:42:37.11 "Then God said, I give you every seed-bearing 00:42:37.12\00:42:39.47 plant on the face of the whole earth 00:42:39.48\00:42:41.69 and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. 00:42:41.70\00:42:43.80 They will be yours for food, and you will eat 00:42:43.81\00:42:45.99 the plants of the field." That's found 00:42:46.00\00:42:47.27 in Genesis chapter 1 verses 29 and 3:18. 00:42:47.28\00:42:50.70 Well, you know if we just stuck with that diet 00:42:50.71\00:42:54.43 maybe we wouldn't get the flu. 00:42:54.44\00:42:56.18 That sounds like an excellent proposition, 00:42:56.19\00:42:57.98 yeah. Well, Amber, boy you know we're 00:42:57.99\00:43:02.30 going through this list of things and 00:43:02.31\00:43:03.98 people often drink with their meals, 00:43:03.99\00:43:05.73 I'm thinking about fluids and liquids 00:43:05.74\00:43:07.54 and so forth, you mentioned water 00:43:07.55\00:43:09.17 though as being a very important part 00:43:09.18\00:43:11.26 of the what you called 8 natural remedies? 00:43:11.27\00:43:13.93 That's right, you don't always advocate drinking 00:43:13.94\00:43:16.17 with your meals though, they say that drinking 00:43:16.18\00:43:18.42 a lot during your meal actually can dilute 00:43:18.43\00:43:20.79 the digestive juices, that need to absorb 00:43:20.80\00:43:23.35 the nutrients that you're eating so 00:43:23.36\00:43:25.13 water is definitely a good thing but 00:43:25.14\00:43:26.51 sometimes they recommend stopping 00:43:26.52\00:43:28.46 drinking about a half and hour before 00:43:28.47\00:43:30.21 your meal and about an hour after your meal, 00:43:30.22\00:43:32.28 so you give your body the digestive juices 00:43:32.29\00:43:34.41 time to go through the material and absorb 00:43:34.42\00:43:37.18 as much of the nutrients in your intestines 00:43:37.19\00:43:39.38 as you can. Well, great, so definitely water 00:43:39.39\00:43:41.93 is extremely important, 60 to 80 percent of the 00:43:41.94\00:43:45.28 tissue in your body is made up of water. 00:43:45.29\00:43:47.55 Wow, so if you don't adequately replenish 00:43:47.56\00:43:51.45 what's in your body it can really damage 00:43:51.46\00:43:53.28 your body, especially if you think about 00:43:53.29\00:43:55.35 how much you sweat during the day? 00:43:55.36\00:43:56.70 How much you excrete during the day? 00:43:56.71\00:43:58.88 Your body is always putting out fluids 00:43:58.89\00:44:00.64 through perspiration when you breathe 00:44:00.65\00:44:01.89 you're putting out fluid and moisture. 00:44:01.90\00:44:03.61 So, it's very important to maintain that, 00:44:03.62\00:44:06.03 because your body will naturally dehydrate 00:44:06.04\00:44:07.63 if you don't replenish it. So, and complications 00:44:07.64\00:44:11.42 that go with dehydration are constipation, 00:44:11.43\00:44:13.32 oh! Boy, yes, urinary tract infections 00:44:13.33\00:44:16.11 and respiratory infections, oh there 00:44:16.12\00:44:17.84 you go, important so, delirium, that's great, 00:44:17.85\00:44:19.82 renal failure, electrolyte imbalances, 00:44:19.83\00:44:23.06 hyperthermia, and they've even shown a 00:44:23.07\00:44:25.92 longer time for wound healing when 00:44:25.93\00:44:27.60 you don't have adequate water. 00:44:27.61\00:44:29.08 So it's, it's very important many things. 00:44:29.09\00:44:31.25 Dryness in the skin, fatigue all those 00:44:31.26\00:44:34.71 things are much complications with not 00:44:34.72\00:44:36.94 have enough water. Evident one study up 00:44:36.95\00:44:38.93 to 70 percent of Americans are dehydrated. 00:44:38.94\00:44:41.16 You know, we say water but you don't just drink 00:44:41.17\00:44:44.16 water, there's other ways of using water. 00:44:44.17\00:44:46.43 To benefit your body, go ahead, 00:44:46.44\00:44:48.34 tell us about it. That's right you know one 00:44:48.35\00:44:50.57 of the things we have lost is the art of 00:44:50.58\00:44:54.33 hydrotherapy, use of the water for treatment." 00:44:54.34\00:44:57.84 Most persons would receive benefit from 00:44:57.85\00:45:00.65 a cool or tepid bath every day, morning 00:45:00.66\00:45:03.48 or evening. Instead of increasing the 00:45:03.49\00:45:06.22 liability to take cold, a bath, properly taken, 00:45:06.23\00:45:09.64 fortifies against cold." So, you can actually 00:45:09.65\00:45:13.66 improve your immune system with taking a bath. 00:45:13.67\00:45:15.84 That's right if you're going go out in the 00:45:15.85\00:45:17.92 cold weather and first you took a bath let say 00:45:17.93\00:45:20.16 64 degrees Fahrenheit, this actually stimulates 00:45:20.17\00:45:23.97 your immune system: It augments the white 00:45:23.98\00:45:25.99 cell response to cold exposure. 00:45:26.00\00:45:28.33 And it increases natural killer cell activity. 00:45:28.34\00:45:30.95 So, get in naturally bath is actually 00:45:30.96\00:45:33.51 a good thing. That's right; you know there are 00:45:33.52\00:45:36.10 a lot of benefits to a good hydrotherapy. 00:45:36.11\00:45:39.16 Well, what about the, the flu pandemic 00:45:39.17\00:45:42.12 that we had in 1918, you had mentioned 00:45:42.13\00:45:45.65 taking water not just orally but other 00:45:45.66\00:45:50.33 uses of water, did they use that for the 1918 00:45:50.34\00:45:52.46 flu to help? You know, there were certain 00:45:52.47\00:45:55.42 centers around the United States that 00:45:55.43\00:45:57.49 were using water treatments in 1918. 00:45:57.50\00:46:00.69 And few statistics on this for those that 00:46:00.70\00:46:04.52 went to the army hospitals 17 percent 00:46:04.53\00:46:07.54 got pneumonia and 7 percent diet, 00:46:07.55\00:46:10.58 of those that did hydrotherapy at 00:46:10.59\00:46:13.55 home only 9 percent got pneumonia and 00:46:13.56\00:46:18.20 only 4 percent died. Of those who went to the 00:46:18.21\00:46:22.51 10 sanitariums, any one of the 10, there was 00:46:22.52\00:46:25.83 a 1 percent rate of pneumonia and only 00:46:25.84\00:46:29.49 a half a percent mortality. It's fantastic, 00:46:29.50\00:46:33.08 yes very good results from doing these 00:46:33.09\00:46:36.36 hydrotherapy treatments. Now, this talk we're doing 00:46:36.37\00:46:39.28 now is on prevention so we're not going 00:46:39.29\00:46:41.13 talk about treatment a whole lot, but I just 00:46:41.14\00:46:43.06 want to mention that because the third talk 00:46:43.07\00:46:45.18 we do in the series will be on treatment 00:46:45.19\00:46:47.16 and will talk about what does sanitariums did 00:46:47.17\00:46:49.48 and what you can do if you are still unlucky 00:46:49.49\00:46:52.46 or still unprepared, yes as to get the influenza. 00:46:52.47\00:46:56.40 Now, if you feel yourself coming down the flu 00:46:56.41\00:46:58.75 Dr. Clerk what would you recommend, 00:46:58.76\00:47:00.18 what do you do when you feel like you 00:47:00.19\00:47:01.44 might be getting some symptoms in the flu? 00:47:01.45\00:47:03.06 First thing I do is I getting in the shower 00:47:03.07\00:47:05.74 and I turn it as hot as I could stand and then 00:47:05.75\00:47:09.70 I just let myself warm up. In fact I've, I keep 00:47:09.71\00:47:13.43 the hot shower on till I feel my temperature 00:47:13.44\00:47:15.91 go up. You might wonder how I know 00:47:15.92\00:47:18.62 if my, can you if you're temperature is rise, 00:47:18.63\00:47:20.22 how do you tell if you're temperature is rising. 00:47:20.23\00:47:22.15 Well, it's a feeling you get, well the way 00:47:22.16\00:47:24.30 I figured that because I put a thermometer 00:47:24.31\00:47:26.24 in mouth one time and just felt how I felt to see 00:47:26.25\00:47:29.86 whether or not I could tell if my temperature 00:47:29.87\00:47:32.35 is going up. Sure enough my temperature is 00:47:32.36\00:47:33.84 started going up and I start feeling this kind 00:47:33.85\00:47:35.92 uneasy feeling like well like I'm sick, yeah. 00:47:35.93\00:47:38.91 And so I kind of got you know recorded 00:47:38.92\00:47:41.78 in my head what it would feel like you can 00:47:41.79\00:47:43.59 put a thermometer in your mouth. 00:47:43.60\00:47:45.03 The idea is, is raise your temperature a little 00:47:45.04\00:47:47.04 bit from whatever it is, you're get in the 00:47:47.05\00:47:49.56 shower to degree or two just see know 00:47:49.57\00:47:51.59 you affected yourself. So, take your normal 00:47:51.60\00:47:53.74 temperature and raise it one degree yeah 00:47:53.75\00:47:55.99 and then after I've got my temperature up 00:47:56.00\00:47:58.62 I turn it to cold. Usually, the fun part, 00:47:58.63\00:48:01.91 the fun part and my water is very cold, 00:48:01.92\00:48:04.95 there you go. If your water isn't cold then 00:48:04.96\00:48:06.78 you may have to come up with where you 00:48:06.79\00:48:08.25 get colder one way be they have a bucket 00:48:08.26\00:48:10.22 full of ice water and have your enemy, 00:48:10.23\00:48:12.52 that's right, or somebody poured down yes. 00:48:12.53\00:48:14.83 But anyway one minute of cold following 00:48:14.84\00:48:17.83 this hot then I repeat that one or two times, 00:48:17.84\00:48:20.45 I mean I go back and turn it on hot and raise 00:48:20.46\00:48:23.05 my temperature again and then once 00:48:23.06\00:48:25.66 I've gone through the cold after the last hot. 00:48:25.67\00:48:28.75 One minute of cold then I go to bed for 00:48:28.76\00:48:30.85 half hour, okay and boy let me tell you 00:48:30.86\00:48:33.52 that makes you feel like you are just taking 00:48:33.53\00:48:36.12 a really, really strong medicine. 00:48:36.13\00:48:38.69 And usually after doing that once, 00:48:38.70\00:48:42.20 when I think I'm coming down with the colder flu 00:48:42.21\00:48:44.83 that will cure it. Really, yeah that usually cures 00:48:44.84\00:48:47.45 it just like that and does this do something 00:48:47.46\00:48:49.61 to your immune system when you go back 00:48:49.62\00:48:51.00 with the hot and cold? It actually does, 00:48:51.01\00:48:52.89 it boosts your immune system quite dramatically, 00:48:52.90\00:48:55.18 it increases as the circulation dramatically 00:48:55.19\00:48:57.43 too. And remember perfect health depends 00:48:57.44\00:48:59.78 on perfect circulation, that's right. 00:48:59.79\00:49:03.19 Well, you take care of hot and cold treatments 00:49:03.20\00:49:08.08 and then what do you do, is that all you do 00:49:08.09\00:49:10.15 for cannot flu or cold? Well, know I'll actually 00:49:10.16\00:49:13.81 take something by mouth and that is a 00:49:13.82\00:49:17.25 dose of charcoal, charcoal. Yeah, now we're not 00:49:17.26\00:49:20.20 talking the brick yet, cubes from mine, 00:49:20.21\00:49:22.36 from your boiler, barbecue outback. 00:49:22.37\00:49:24.22 No, you wouldn't wanna take those, 00:49:24.23\00:49:27.69 those have chemicals added to them 00:49:27.70\00:49:29.40 so they'll burn, but if you got the idea 00:49:29.41\00:49:31.34 that is charcoal. You can go to health food 00:49:31.35\00:49:33.98 stores and go to CharcoalRemedies.com 00:49:33.99\00:49:36.46 online, you can get it from different sources, 00:49:36.47\00:49:38.81 you can go out you know burn some wood 00:49:38.82\00:49:40.55 in your backyard and scrape the black stuff off, 00:49:40.56\00:49:42.76 that's fine. You know, the best is activated 00:49:42.77\00:49:45.34 charcoal and what I'll do is, I'll take a 00:49:45.35\00:49:48.55 tablespoon of charcoal or two tablespoons 00:49:48.56\00:49:51.17 of charcoal and put it in a cup of water 00:49:51.18\00:49:53.79 in a glass jar, put it on the lid, shake it up 00:49:53.80\00:49:56.28 so it's all in most and then I'll drink it down 00:49:56.29\00:49:59.63 as quickly as I can. And so this stuff is good, 00:49:59.64\00:50:03.10 it binds viruses, it takes toxins out of 00:50:03.11\00:50:05.67 our system, those toxins that the virus 00:50:05.68\00:50:07.66 is producing that will cause cytokine storm 00:50:07.67\00:50:09.68 throughout the rest of your body. 00:50:09.69\00:50:10.96 It helps in all those areas so, just like you 00:50:10.97\00:50:13.46 swallowed a sponge. Yes, exactly, it absorbs up 00:50:13.47\00:50:16.31 the toxins, that's exactly right, it's very 00:50:16.32\00:50:18.92 good, fantastic so when I started feeling those 00:50:18.93\00:50:20.54 symptoms of colder flu, along with all the 00:50:20.55\00:50:22.88 other remedies I'm definitely gonna use 00:50:22.89\00:50:25.00 some hydrotherapy, drinking plenty of water 00:50:25.01\00:50:26.79 to keep hydrated and use my hot and cold bath 00:50:26.80\00:50:28.77 and maybe mix some charcoal at that water. 00:50:28.78\00:50:30.58 That's right and if you see that everybody is 00:50:30.59\00:50:32.96 getting flu around the neighborhood, 00:50:32.97\00:50:34.26 do a cold bath once a day, it definitely 00:50:34.27\00:50:37.36 stimulates the immune system too, 00:50:37.37\00:50:38.77 you don't have to do hot. Wonderful thank 00:50:38.78\00:50:41.16 you, oh! One of the last things I mentioned 00:50:41.17\00:50:43.78 when we talked about the eight natural remedies 00:50:43.79\00:50:45.79 was trust in divine power, in God we trust, 00:50:45.80\00:50:49.04 in God we trust just like on our bills, 00:50:49.05\00:50:51.12 that we have in our billfold, that's why we 00:50:51.13\00:50:53.46 keep him in our billfold right, that's right, 00:50:53.47\00:50:55.25 the trust. There are many studies that 00:50:55.26\00:50:57.97 talk about religion having a profound 00:50:57.98\00:51:00.68 effect on your immune system actually. 00:51:00.69\00:51:02.44 You bet, religiosity or spirituality has been 00:51:02.45\00:51:05.62 shown to increase the immune function. 00:51:05.63\00:51:07.75 People who go to church and they get involved 00:51:07.76\00:51:10.14 have better immune function. 00:51:10.15\00:51:11.82 When they compared people who have a 00:51:11.83\00:51:13.35 spiritual well being with those who don't, 00:51:13.36\00:51:15.38 they found they have longer life expectancy, 00:51:15.39\00:51:17.88 wow! They had more satisfaction in their life, 00:51:17.89\00:51:20.40 they dealt better will illness, they have fewer 00:51:20.41\00:51:23.24 and shorter hospital stays oh! Yeah, they 00:51:23.25\00:51:25.65 suffer less anxiety and depression and 00:51:25.66\00:51:28.10 they enjoyed better immune function, 00:51:28.11\00:51:29.75 stress also affects your immune system. 00:51:29.76\00:51:31.62 The stress affects the immune system in a 00:51:31.63\00:51:33.70 number of ways, remember we said 00:51:33.71\00:51:35.53 natural killer cells are important as 00:51:35.54\00:51:38.12 are IgA producing cells, if you get stressed 00:51:38.13\00:51:42.29 natural killer cell activity decreases 00:51:42.30\00:51:44.78 and levels of IgA decrease in your tears, 00:51:44.79\00:51:47.91 in your lungs, in your saliva. 00:51:47.92\00:51:49.78 And so again you'll be a sitting duck for 00:51:49.79\00:51:52.82 the bird flu. Man, it sounds like your 00:51:52.83\00:51:54.46 mental health really affects your physical 00:51:54.47\00:51:56.59 health, that's right, interesting divine power 00:51:56.60\00:51:59.14 tends to make mental health stronger 00:51:59.15\00:52:00.91 that's right and leads to stronger immune system. 00:52:00.92\00:52:03.20 That's right. The number of respiratory 00:52:03.21\00:52:06.40 infections increase with increasing amounts 00:52:06.41\00:52:09.33 of psychological stress. Very interesting, 00:52:09.34\00:52:11.66 and as we know psychological stress 00:52:11.67\00:52:13.97 is really how I respond to situation has not 00:52:13.98\00:52:18.37 necessarily the situation by itself. 00:52:18.38\00:52:20.84 That's right such as responding with anger 00:52:20.85\00:52:23.57 for instance, yes you know one five minute 00:52:23.58\00:52:27.19 experience episode of anger can significantly 00:52:27.20\00:52:31.18 reduces IgA levels for up to five hours. 00:52:31.19\00:52:33.59 Wow, that's, that's really incredible, 00:52:33.60\00:52:35.04 five hours your immune system is affected 00:52:35.05\00:52:36.91 by a five minute reaction to anything 00:52:36.92\00:52:38.93 that's going on you, that's pretty amazing. 00:52:38.94\00:52:40.50 Well, I like to laugh, do you? yes does that 00:52:40.51\00:52:43.77 help me at all. That's right laughed is the 00:52:43.78\00:52:46.06 best medicine right, that's why I hear, 00:52:46.07\00:52:47.70 very hard, it feel like a medicine, that's right 00:52:47.71\00:52:50.23 and lack of a sense of humor, when you let 00:52:50.24\00:52:52.71 daily problems, and negative emotions get 00:52:52.72\00:52:54.66 you down it actually decreases your IgA 00:52:54.67\00:52:57.62 levels again. So, telling jokes is actually 00:52:57.63\00:53:00.16 good for everyone, well it could be, do you 00:53:00.17\00:53:02.23 have a joke for us? No not at all. 00:53:02.24\00:53:04.36 On the top of my head. It's interesting too 00:53:04.37\00:53:08.15 as we're talking about trust and divine power, 00:53:08.16\00:53:10.37 decreasing stress and helping to improve 00:53:10.38\00:53:13.34 your emotional state. That living a life of 00:53:13.35\00:53:18.24 trusting God leads to life lived to bless others. 00:53:18.25\00:53:21.89 So you're in, your service to others. 00:53:21.90\00:53:24.31 That's right, service to others. 00:53:24.32\00:53:26.19 And it has an effect on the immune system again. 00:53:26.20\00:53:28.70 In fact in studies of people who are helping 00:53:28.71\00:53:31.92 others mortality was significantly reduced 00:53:31.93\00:53:34.78 for individuals who provided support to 00:53:34.79\00:53:36.66 friends, relatives, neighbors and their spouses. 00:53:36.67\00:53:40.29 But what was very interesting though is 00:53:40.30\00:53:42.42 people who just received support didn't live to 00:53:42.43\00:53:45.70 help others actually had no improvement in 00:53:45.71\00:53:48.52 mortality. So I'm not really helping myself 00:53:48.53\00:53:51.33 if I just sit here and take all the service 00:53:51.34\00:53:53.91 and support for my friends and neighbors, 00:53:53.92\00:53:55.37 I need to return that, it sounds like. 00:53:55.38\00:53:57.13 That's exactly right. In one study people that 00:53:57.14\00:53:59.40 volunteered had 60 percent less mortality 00:53:59.41\00:54:02.67 even they knows that showed up in church 00:54:02.68\00:54:04.12 every week. Fantastic. So getting involved is 00:54:04.13\00:54:07.09 more important than just being there. 00:54:07.10\00:54:08.55 And we've got to known that all long with 00:54:08.56\00:54:10.33 those who get involved are getting more 00:54:10.34\00:54:12.00 out of stuff. So they don't just sit there, 00:54:12.01\00:54:13.87 don't just sit there, you have to see something, 00:54:13.88\00:54:15.25 that's exactly right. Reminds us of a famous 00:54:15.26\00:54:17.87 text doesn't it? Acts, Acts 20:35, it is more 00:54:17.88\00:54:22.35 blessed to give than to receive. 00:54:22.36\00:54:25.33 Well in summary; use sanitary precautions 00:54:25.34\00:54:30.20 to reduce your exposure to this bird flu virus. 00:54:30.21\00:54:33.76 Be prepared in case of national shortages 00:54:33.77\00:54:37.05 of essential supplies and services you might 00:54:37.06\00:54:39.45 get cut off I mean if everybody is out of 00:54:39.46\00:54:41.62 work just from being sick, the trucks won't 00:54:41.63\00:54:43.89 be running, that's right. But if they quarantine 00:54:43.90\00:54:45.50 the entire country you might be scrounging up 00:54:45.51\00:54:48.13 to find a potato chip to eat. 00:54:48.14\00:54:49.60 That wouldn't be good for you. 00:54:49.61\00:54:50.95 And then there are vaccines and antivirals 00:54:50.96\00:54:55.24 but they could be in limited supply and 00:54:55.25\00:54:57.95 of limited efficacy. And so what you wanna 00:54:57.96\00:55:02.14 do is do all you can to boost your immune 00:55:02.15\00:55:05.81 system, that's right. Practicing good health 00:55:05.82\00:55:08.48 habits is the most important thing you 00:55:08.49\00:55:10.50 can do to boost your immune system 00:55:10.51\00:55:11.63 and just a quick review of those eating a 00:55:11.64\00:55:13.72 nutritious balanced diet. All those fruits and 00:55:13.73\00:55:16.44 vegetables, nuts and seeds that we talked 00:55:16.45\00:55:18.18 about, yes, eating variety of foods plenty 00:55:18.19\00:55:21.26 of vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds, whole grain 00:55:21.27\00:55:23.89 products, yes, it's the most important thing 00:55:23.90\00:55:25.70 you can do get all the Vitamins you need 00:55:25.71\00:55:27.42 and it's not so much what you are eating 00:55:27.43\00:55:29.80 but what you are avoiding eating as well, 00:55:29.81\00:55:31.70 you wanna stayed away from the excess salts 00:55:31.71\00:55:34.27 and sugar, alcohol, cholesterol and saturated 00:55:34.28\00:55:36.79 fats which depress your immune system. 00:55:36.80\00:55:38.77 Yes. Boy you've got it right. 00:55:38.78\00:55:40.88 Other practices you know drinking lots of water, 00:55:40.89\00:55:43.69 we suggest you know ten glasses of water a day. 00:55:43.70\00:55:46.84 And exercise on a regular basis, that's right. 00:55:46.85\00:55:49.71 Just keep moving you see when you start moving 00:55:49.72\00:55:52.02 I guess you die, that's right, basically. 00:55:52.03\00:55:54.92 And then remember you need some rest, 00:55:54.93\00:55:57.42 so in between you get some rest. 00:55:57.43\00:55:59.74 The only thing more difficult than planning 00:55:59.75\00:56:02.54 for this bird flu would be explaining 00:56:02.55\00:56:04.58 why you didn't do it definitely and especially 00:56:04.59\00:56:07.83 if you have people dieing around. 00:56:07.84\00:56:09.34 Yes indeed. Well this has been the talk on 00:56:09.35\00:56:13.06 how to prevent the bird flu. Next coming will be 00:56:13.07\00:56:16.95 our third talk and demonstration on 00:56:16.96\00:56:19.58 how to treat it if you come down with it 00:56:19.59\00:56:22.02 and you know that could be a life saver, 00:56:22.03\00:56:24.09 definitely. Well thank you for being with us today. 00:56:24.10\00:56:27.05 Yes, thank you for being with us today. 00:56:27.06\00:56:29.45
