From the 1700's into the early 1800's interest 00:00:14.30\00:00:17.37 increased in the prophecies found in Daniel 00:00:17.40\00:00:19.38 and Revelation. Those who studied believed 00:00:19.41\00:00:22.22 that some important event would soon occur. 00:00:22.25\00:00:24.40 In Italy, a man by the name Manuel Lacunza 00:00:24.43\00:00:28.14 secluded himself to spent time studying the Bible. 00:00:28.17\00:00:30.88 He prayed for the Holy Spirit open his mind to the 00:00:31.17\00:00:33.54 prophecies of Daniel, Paul and John. 00:00:33.57\00:00:35.97 While studying he became convicted that Jesus 00:00:36.22\00:00:38.73 would soon return and so he wrote a book about it 00:00:38.76\00:00:41.25 that was later translated and circulated to nearly 00:00:41.28\00:00:43.97 half the world. Joseph Wolff traveled 00:00:44.00\00:00:46.80 extensively as a missionary to Europe and Asia. 00:00:46.83\00:00:49.10 To share his faith in Christ especially to the Jews. 00:00:49.46\00:00:52.20 While in England, he learned of the prophecies 00:00:52.65\00:00:54.59 that pointed to Jesus is soon return 00:00:54.62\00:00:56.13 and began sharing them with the many to whom 00:00:56.16\00:00:58.54 he spoke. In Sweden, the state church 00:00:58.57\00:01:01.56 outlaw the teaching of the second coming of Christ, 00:01:01.59\00:01:03.68 but in 1842 and 1843 reports began circulating 00:01:03.71\00:01:08.06 the children who are ruled by some unseen force 00:01:08.09\00:01:10.55 to preach the message "Fear God, and give glory 00:01:10.58\00:01:13.92 to Him; for the hour of His judgment is come." 00:01:13.95\00:01:17.07 And in the United States, there was William Miller 00:01:18.09\00:01:20.79 Miller was raised in a Christian home, 00:01:21.17\00:01:23.02 but became agnostic, who had no faith in the Bible 00:01:23.05\00:01:25.94 that he believed contradicted itself. 00:01:25.97\00:01:28.15 But thoughts of life after death and the 00:01:29.41\00:01:31.11 judgment troubled him being honest at heart 00:01:31.14\00:01:33.82 Miller decided to sit down with only the Bible 00:01:33.85\00:01:36.16 and concordance and to study for himself 00:01:36.19\00:01:38.80 to see if the apparent contradictions 00:01:38.83\00:01:40.48 could be resolved. After two years of Bible study, 00:01:40.51\00:01:43.87 Miller was unable to justify his position. 00:01:43.90\00:01:46.30 In fact, he found in Jesus, a best friend 00:01:46.33\00:01:49.74 and savior. The book of Daniel 00:01:49.77\00:01:52.48 became one of the chief objects of Miller study 00:01:52.51\00:01:54.94 especially was ----- by Daniel 00:01:54.97\00:01:57.14 8:14 where it said "Unto two thousand and 00:01:57.17\00:02:00.52 three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary 00:02:00.55\00:02:03.04 be cleansed. Miller as well as many 00:02:03.07\00:02:05.86 scholars today believe that Daniel 00:02:05.89\00:02:07.96 prophecy represented a year. 00:02:07.99\00:02:09.91 Believing of the cleansing of the sanctuary spoken 00:02:11.11\00:02:12.89 of an prophecy was the cleansing of the earth 00:02:12.92\00:02:15.19 by fire at the second coming. 00:02:15.22\00:02:16.74 Miller thought that he could discover 00:02:17.80\00:02:19.01 when the 2300 day prophecy would end. 00:02:19.04\00:02:21.51 He could learn when Christ would come again. 00:02:21.54\00:02:23.57 Taking the prophecies found in Daniel 00:02:25.17\00:02:26.56 8 and 9. He was able to construct this timeline. 00:02:26.59\00:02:29.88 Daniel was told that the 2300 day prophecy 00:02:29.91\00:02:32.59 would began at the rebuilding of Jerusalem. 00:02:32.62\00:02:34.64 Miller found that that day was 457 B.C. 00:02:34.67\00:02:38.55 The next event on the prophetic timeline 00:02:38.58\00:02:41.12 was 27 A.D., which according to prophecy 00:02:41.15\00:02:44.75 was the coming of the prince, the anointed one. 00:02:44.78\00:02:46.90 This day turned out to be when Jesus was Baptized 00:02:48.02\00:02:50.25 and began his public ministry. 00:02:50.28\00:02:52.03 A prophetic week or seven literal years later 00:02:53.41\00:02:55.70 was to be the end of the time determined upon 00:02:55.73\00:02:57.95 Daniels people and his Holy city. 00:02:57.98\00:02:59.95 At this point on the timeline, Steven was stoned 00:03:00.73\00:03:03.31 ceiling the rejection of Christ by the Jews 00:03:03.34\00:03:05.46 as a nation and the beginning of the time 00:03:05.49\00:03:07.89 when the Gospel was to be preached 00:03:07.92\00:03:09.42 to the gentiles. The prophecy also said that in 00:03:09.45\00:03:12.64 the midst of the week or three and a half years after 00:03:12.67\00:03:15.39 27 A.D. He shall cause sacrifice and 00:03:15.42\00:03:18.15 oblation to cease. This is when Christ died 00:03:18.18\00:03:20.97 on the cross and put an end to the system of sacrifices 00:03:21.00\00:03:24.05 that it pointed to his death. So far all the dates 00:03:24.08\00:03:27.75 had matched up with key events 00:03:27.78\00:03:29.15 in Christian history. As Miller continued to study, 00:03:29.18\00:03:32.28 he realized that the final event 00:03:32.31\00:03:33.86 on the timeline was just a few stored years ahead. 00:03:33.89\00:03:36.24 He determined that the prophecy 00:03:37.18\00:03:38.18 would end somewhere around 1843 or 1844. 00:03:38.21\00:03:42.10 At first, Miller was reluctant to share 00:03:42.13\00:03:44.75 his studies of prophecy, but as you will learn in a moment. 00:03:44.78\00:03:47.37 God open the door in a special way. 00:03:47.40\00:03:49.85 To learn more about William Miller 00:03:51.03\00:03:52.17 and the times in which he lived we join Jim Nicks 00:03:52.20\00:03:54.97 of the Ellen G. White estate as he will tour 00:03:55.00\00:03:57.56 of William Miller's restored home 00:03:57.59\00:03:59.27 in Low Hampton, New York. The exterior of the house 00:03:59.30\00:04:03.66 has just been restored in the last year or two 00:04:03.69\00:04:06.30 they've been working on it. If you had seen the house 00:04:06.33\00:04:08.25 when we acquired it in 1984 it look considerably 00:04:08.28\00:04:12.22 different. Let me tell you it was a mess, 00:04:12.25\00:04:14.44 and the shutters were gone. It had green siding on it 00:04:14.47\00:04:17.83 that's all been removed well over the green siding 00:04:17.86\00:04:20.17 was even some other siding in parts 00:04:20.20\00:04:21.77 of the house. It's been restored 00:04:21.80\00:04:23.29 considerably by volunteers all the work that you see 00:04:23.32\00:04:26.02 almost all the work that you see 00:04:26.05\00:04:27.37 has been done by volunteers. Just briefly about 00:04:27.40\00:04:30.89 these two front rooms because there are the rooms 00:04:30.92\00:04:33.00 that are most closely related to how they look 00:04:33.03\00:04:36.12 back when William lived here. This was William Miller's 00:04:36.15\00:04:39.37 parlor on this side. Now the furniture 00:04:39.40\00:04:42.84 that's in the parlor today was not William Miller's. 00:04:42.87\00:04:45.58 But it is 19th century, Victorian parlor furniture 00:04:45.61\00:04:51.09 and it belong to William Miller's daughter 00:04:51.12\00:04:54.43 little Lucy, you will also see a very interesting 00:04:54.46\00:04:58.14 flora pattern in there that's painted 00:04:58.17\00:05:00.22 it's a very crude primitive flora pattern 00:05:00.25\00:05:03.47 that does go back to Miller's time. 00:05:03.50\00:05:05.87 You gonna want to look at that 00:05:05.90\00:05:06.87 because that is kind of an unusual art 00:05:06.88\00:05:09.41 consultant, historical consultants say that's kind 00:05:09.44\00:05:11.64 of an unusual feature defined one that just 00:05:11.67\00:05:14.16 hand stance on the floor. Now on this side 00:05:14.19\00:05:17.06 this was William Miller's study. 00:05:17.09\00:05:18.61 This was where he prepared his sermons. 00:05:19.53\00:05:21.66 If you would come to visit William Miller 00:05:22.36\00:05:23.90 this is where you would've been assured in to see 00:05:23.93\00:05:26.22 him when he lived here now there are a few pieces 00:05:26.25\00:05:29.38 of furniture is this room here that actually 00:05:29.41\00:05:32.83 belong to William Miller that have been donated 00:05:32.86\00:05:35.00 to us by descendents and they are so back here for us 00:05:35.03\00:05:39.08 to enjoy. The bed that William Miller slept in 00:05:39.11\00:05:42.33 and died in is there in the corner 00:05:42.36\00:05:44.57 that is his bed. The desk is not his, it is one 00:05:44.60\00:05:49.08 that he has been donated and it is of that era 00:05:49.11\00:05:52.04 but it is not his. But the chair that's there 00:05:52.07\00:05:55.57 in front of the desk is William Miller's chair. 00:05:55.60\00:05:58.21 There is also a deacons bench 00:05:58.24\00:06:00.46 a set tea type thing. I guess it is still 00:06:00.49\00:06:03.36 on this wall, looks like it is 00:06:03.39\00:06:05.13 that set tea that deacons bench 00:06:05.16\00:06:08.04 was in the Miller family. So there are owners 00:06:08.07\00:06:11.52 rocking chair in there that rocking chair 00:06:11.55\00:06:13.72 belong to William Miller. So we have four pieces 00:06:13.75\00:06:16.45 of furniture in there that belong to William Miller. 00:06:16.48\00:06:18.76 When Miller first came to his initial conclusion 00:06:20.19\00:06:22.15 1843 was still about 25 years into the future. He 00:06:22.18\00:06:26.46 was impressed that he needed to share this information 00:06:26.49\00:06:28.69 with others, but he was reluctant. 00:06:28.72\00:06:30.96 For five years, Miller reanalyzed his position 00:06:31.75\00:06:33.66 to be sure that he had not overlook something. 00:06:33.69\00:06:35.75 It wasn't until 13 years later 00:06:36.37\00:06:38.00 in August of 1831 that is burn to share 00:06:38.03\00:06:41.42 his findings seemed overwhelmed. In order 00:06:41.45\00:06:44.40 to ease his conscious, he promised the Lord 00:06:44.43\00:06:46.54 that should he receive a call to preach this message 00:06:46.57\00:06:48.88 he would go, he sat back feeling confident 00:06:48.91\00:06:52.20 and no one would ask a simple farmer to speak. 00:06:52.23\00:06:54.43 However within 30 minutes, a knock on his front door 00:06:55.65\00:06:58.38 brought his first invitation. Miller was so upset, 00:06:58.41\00:07:01.60 that Lord would take him up on his promise 00:07:01.63\00:07:03.85 that he stormed out of the house 00:07:03.88\00:07:05.11 to this nearby Maple growth to wrestle with God. 00:07:05.14\00:07:07.96 Finally, he submitted to the will of God 00:07:08.43\00:07:10.87 and decided to go. As he did a piece came 00:07:10.90\00:07:14.16 upon his heart and when he spoke at that first meeting 00:07:14.19\00:07:17.11 the people responded very favorably. 00:07:17.14\00:07:19.53 When he returned home from that first 00:07:21.00\00:07:22.15 speaking engagement, he found another request 00:07:22.18\00:07:24.33 waiting for him. Many more would follow 00:07:24.36\00:07:27.01 so many in fact that he could not accept them all. 00:07:27.04\00:07:29.46 From October 1834 to June of 1839, 00:07:30.61\00:07:33.62 the record shows that Miller gave 800 lectures. 00:07:33.65\00:07:36.74 As the year 1843, Grunear interest in what Miller 00:07:38.18\00:07:41.09 had to say increased helping the spirit of this art. 00:07:41.12\00:07:44.19 was what happened in the night of November 13, 00:07:44.71\00:07:46.53 1833 that was the night the stars fell. 00:07:46.56\00:07:50.22 This spectacular heavenly display extended all over 00:07:50.25\00:07:53.86 North America and caused quite a stir. 00:07:53.89\00:07:56.26 One newspaper editor wrote, "We pronounce the rain 00:07:57.63\00:08:00.16 of fire, which we saw on Wednesday morning last, 00:08:00.19\00:08:02.88 an awful type, a sure forerunner, 00:08:02.91\00:08:05.86 a merciful sign, of that great and dreadful 00:08:05.89\00:08:08.76 day which the inhabitants of the earth will witness 00:08:08.79\00:08:11.58 when the sixth seal shall be opened. 00:08:11.61\00:08:13.80 The time is just at hand, described not only in the 00:08:13.83\00:08:16.86 New Testament, but in the Old Testament; 00:08:16.89\00:08:18.88 and a more correct picture of a fig tree casting 00:08:18.91\00:08:21.79 it's fruit when blown by a mighty wind, 00:08:21.82\00:08:23.72 it was not possible to behold." 00:08:23.75\00:08:25.76 This event was seen by some as a fulfillment of the words 00:08:26.80\00:08:29.96 of Christ found in Mathew 24:29, 00:08:29.99\00:08:32.33 When speaking of the last days 00:08:32.36\00:08:34.46 he had said " the stars shall fall from heaven." 00:08:34.49\00:08:37.93 For the first eight years of his ministry, 00:08:39.45\00:08:41.21 Miller preached to little churches 00:08:41.24\00:08:43.03 in small towns. However, while preaching 00:08:43.06\00:08:45.95 in Exeter, New Hampshire. He met a man who had 00:08:45.98\00:08:48.22 changed all that. That man was Joshua V. Himes. 00:08:48.25\00:08:52.64 Himes asked Miller, why he was not getting 00:08:52.67\00:08:54.80 his message out to the world. Miller responded 00:08:54.83\00:08:57.62 that he had tried to reach every town and village 00:08:57.65\00:08:59.32 where he was invited, Himes was shocked. 00:08:59.35\00:09:01.48 What about the source in the large cities? 00:09:01.51\00:09:03.86 It was then that Joshua Himes became Miller's promoter. 00:09:03.89\00:09:07.62 He gave him the access to the large cities of America. 00:09:07.65\00:09:10.42 Another key individual to join the Miller like movement 00:09:10.45\00:09:13.89 was Charles Fitch, a congregational pastor 00:09:13.92\00:09:17.14 from Boston. One of Fitch's contributions to the movement 00:09:17.17\00:09:21.47 was his 1843 chart, which provided a visual 00:09:21.50\00:09:24.77 representation of the prophecies Miller's 00:09:24.80\00:09:26.69 spoke of. This is one of the original charts 00:09:26.72\00:09:29.12 printed at the time. A symbolic beast were 00:09:29.15\00:09:32.21 illustrated by pictures. And important dates were 00:09:32.24\00:09:34.84 highlighted. The flow of the chart 00:09:34.87\00:09:37.33 was also designed to show how different prophecies 00:09:37.36\00:09:39.50 all ended in the year 1843. 00:09:39.53\00:09:42.16 This broadside or handout was also printed 00:09:43.13\00:09:45.75 to help illustrate the key aspects of 00:09:45.78\00:09:47.46 Miller's presentation. The striking title 00:09:47.49\00:09:49.96 and images portrayed, no doubt 00:09:49.99\00:09:52.01 help to attract attention 00:09:52.04\00:09:53.45 to the contents. Jim Nix also took us 00:09:53.48\00:09:56.70 to Portland Maine, where Miller spoke 00:09:56.73\00:09:59.01 to a congregation at the Casco Street 00:09:59.04\00:10:01.06 christian church. He describes the impact 00:10:01.09\00:10:03.52 of Millers message. This is the Casco Street 00:10:03.55\00:10:06.44 Christian church as it appeared 00:10:06.47\00:10:08.96 after it was a church, but before it was torn down. 00:10:08.99\00:10:12.18 This is where William Miller spoke by this time you could 00:10:12.21\00:10:15.92 see its a Carriage and Sleigh manufacturing company. 00:10:15.95\00:10:18.79 So, we don't know of the picture of the church 00:10:18.82\00:10:21.41 as it appeared when Miller was speaking there, 00:10:21.44\00:10:24.78 but it still look like a church by the time 00:10:24.81\00:10:27.15 this photograph is taken much later. 00:10:27.18\00:10:28.86 This is the place where Miller held his meetings 00:10:29.29\00:10:31.36 in 1840 and 1842. You probably recall 00:10:31.39\00:10:35.49 reading Ellen White talking about the impact 00:10:35.52\00:10:38.35 that Miller's preaching had on this town. 00:10:38.38\00:10:41.10 And how the solemn, the meetings were. 00:10:41.13\00:10:43.74 The newspapers tell us that after Miller was here 00:10:43.77\00:10:46.79 in town that four weeks at 11 'o clock every morning. 00:10:46.82\00:10:51.02 The bankers would get together 00:10:52.53\00:10:53.70 not to count their money, their gold and silver 00:10:53.73\00:10:57.15 but for Bible study that was a kind of impact 00:10:57.18\00:10:59.77 that William Miller's preaching had. 00:10:59.80\00:11:01.57 Very solemn, if you accepted it even if you 00:11:01.60\00:11:04.78 didn't accept his teachings it was biblically based 00:11:04.81\00:11:09.33 enough that you kind a kept one eye on the heavens 00:11:09.36\00:11:12.97 especially on October 22 to see if maybe the Miller 00:11:13.00\00:11:15.51 writes were right after all. You see when William Miller 00:11:15.54\00:11:18.61 would preach, the place was always packed. 00:11:18.64\00:11:21.10 I don't care where it was this church or other places 00:11:21.13\00:11:23.40 Miller was a popular preacher people came to listen 00:11:23.43\00:11:27.81 and so the place was always packed. 00:11:27.84\00:11:29.48 And you can picture someone coming into the back 00:11:30.22\00:11:32.01 of the hall looking around, trying to find where another 00:11:32.04\00:11:34.88 person could squeeze in, can't see a place 00:11:34.91\00:11:38.20 Miller up there in a poppet looking down can see 00:11:38.23\00:11:40.93 where another person could squeeze in, 00:11:40.96\00:11:42.57 and so he leaves the poppet goes escorts them 00:11:43.14\00:11:47.10 to a seat get some seeded and then goes back up 00:11:47.13\00:11:50.52 and resumes preaching. Now I've never seen that 00:11:50.55\00:11:53.75 happened, but you can begin to see why people 00:11:53.78\00:11:56.33 even who disagreed with his theology 00:11:56.36\00:11:59.21 talked about his sincerity, he practiced 00:11:59.24\00:12:02.71 what he preached. 00:12:02.74\00:12:03.80 Although, he did not set an exact date. 00:12:05.82\00:12:07.78 Miller believed that Jesus would come between the 00:12:07.81\00:12:09.67 Spring of 1843 and the spring of 1844. 00:12:09.70\00:12:12.99 Based on the Jewish calendar. When the spring of 1844 00:12:14.12\00:12:17.31 past without incident the believers were 00:12:17.34\00:12:19.79 understandably disappointed. But they turned again 00:12:19.82\00:12:22.89 to God's word, had they made a mistake was 00:12:22.92\00:12:25.73 there are miscalculation. Upon the reexamination 00:12:25.76\00:12:29.58 of the evidence, they found one key point 00:12:29.61\00:12:31.89 they had missed. They had supposed 00:12:31.92\00:12:34.04 that they creed to rebuilt Jerusalem 00:12:34.07\00:12:35.87 had got into effect at the beginning of 457 B.C., which 00:12:35.90\00:12:39.39 coincided with the spring of our present day calender. 00:12:39.42\00:12:42.29 As a result, they had come to expect Jesus to return 00:12:43.67\00:12:45.99 between the spring of 1843 and the spring of 1844. However, 00:12:46.02\00:12:50.79 upon closer study they found out that the decree did 00:12:50.82\00:12:53.94 not actually going to affect until the fall of 457 BC. 00:12:53.97\00:12:58.11 2300 years from that date would be the fall of 1844. 00:12:59.38\00:13:03.31 The believers were revived. A man by the name of 00:13:04.45\00:13:08.29 Samuel Snow discovered even more evidence 00:13:08.32\00:13:10.53 to support this new date. He found that Jesus died 00:13:10.56\00:13:13.70 not only at the exact year stated in Daniel's prophecy 00:13:13.73\00:13:16.62 but he also died at passover. 00:13:16.65\00:13:18.56 At the exact time, the sacrifice were being 00:13:19.30\00:13:20.97 presented in the temple along those same lines. 00:13:21.00\00:13:23.94 He discovered that the Jews celebrated the day 00:13:23.97\00:13:26.49 of atonement the cleansing of the sanctuary 00:13:26.52\00:13:29.08 in the fall. Could it up also be expected 00:13:29.11\00:13:32.91 that God will fulfill the prophecy to cleanse 00:13:32.94\00:13:34.83 the sanctuary of the exact date as well. 00:13:34.86\00:13:36.99 In 1844, that day fell on October 22, the believers 00:13:38.47\00:13:44.97 also related the parable of the 10 versions 00:13:45.00\00:13:47.47 to their experience. They believed that 00:13:47.50\00:13:49.94 they have been in a waiting time 00:13:49.97\00:13:51.30 just before the bride groom was to appear. 00:13:51.33\00:13:53.74 They now went out with what they term 00:13:53.77\00:13:56.36 the midnight cry. Behold the bridegroom 00:13:56.39\00:13:59.13 cometh. Those early believers 00:13:59.16\00:14:02.41 were hardened in their faith. In New Hampshire, 00:14:02.44\00:14:04.91 a man by the name of Leonard Hastings 00:14:04.94\00:14:07.05 refuse to harvest his potato crop 00:14:07.08\00:14:09.11 as a decoration of his believe in christ 00:14:09.14\00:14:11.30 imminent return. Jim Nix took us to that field 00:14:11.33\00:14:14.77 and told us the story. Behind you was a field, it's 00:14:14.80\00:14:20.59 still a field there, but that was a field that played 00:14:20.62\00:14:22.56 significant part in Adventist history. 00:14:22.59\00:14:25.52 Today and tomorrow, we will be doing something 00:14:26.74\00:14:28.28 with the Miller writes as well as the early 00:14:28.31\00:14:30.31 Sabbath keepers and living in this area. 00:14:30.34\00:14:33.18 His farm was here, his house was on this side 00:14:33.21\00:14:35.36 was this man by the name of Leonard Hastings. 00:14:35.39\00:14:38.12 Now you all know the story of Leonard Hastings, 00:14:38.15\00:14:40.52 you may never have seen a picture of him 00:14:40.55\00:14:42.31 and doubtless you don't even know his name. 00:14:42.34\00:14:44.70 But you know that in the fall of 1844, there was a man 00:14:44.73\00:14:48.04 who did not dig his potatoes. He left them in the field. 00:14:48.07\00:14:51.46 Alright, his house was right here 00:14:52.12\00:14:53.74 right, where these pumped trees 00:14:53.77\00:14:55.64 is out there that is where his house was 00:14:55.67\00:14:57.38 and his field that famous field 00:14:57.41\00:14:59.76 in Adventist history is right behind this. 00:14:59.79\00:15:01.58 It's still a field, but now it's got some 00:15:01.61\00:15:03.78 stones in it, not potatoes. But this is the man. 00:15:03.81\00:15:07.16 Now you may never have heard his letter. 00:15:07.89\00:15:09.37 I love to read this to teachers especially. 00:15:09.40\00:15:11.71 I have printed it on the back side of 00:15:12.40\00:15:14.98 a photocopy of his handwritten letter 00:15:15.01\00:15:16.47 that he wrote to the orthodox church 00:15:16.89\00:15:18.78 here, the orthodox congregational church 00:15:18.84\00:15:21.31 when he asked to have his name dropped. 00:15:21.34\00:15:23.06 The reason I would like read this to teachers 00:15:23.09\00:15:24.83 is because these guys back then, 00:15:24.86\00:15:26.35 these pioneers they knew how to pack a lot 00:15:26.38\00:15:28.65 into a sentence. This whole thing is two sentences long. 00:15:28.68\00:15:31.71 Now, let me, I can't read this to you, I can't read one 00:15:31.74\00:15:35.16 sentence on one breath, but here we go September 00:15:35.19\00:15:37.23 17, 1843, believing is I do that the second advent of 00:15:37.26\00:15:41.84 the Lord in 1843 is plainly and clearly taught 00:15:41.87\00:15:44.79 in the Gospel and also the Christian perfection 00:15:44.82\00:15:47.28 or sanctification is required of us 00:15:47.31\00:15:49.24 in God's word and that in and through the 00:15:49.27\00:15:51.60 atonement of the lord Jesus there is ample provision 00:15:51.63\00:15:54.00 made for our sanctification and full redemption 00:15:54.03\00:15:56.23 in this world. And knowing as I do, 00:15:56.26\00:15:58.32 there is a church you do regret and make light 00:15:58.35\00:16:00.58 of these glorious true and ever say that men 00:16:00.61\00:16:03.13 may go on sinning to heaven and also the Christ cannot 00:16:03.16\00:16:05.68 come in the clouds of heaven these 1000 years. 00:16:05.71\00:16:07.80 I therefore feel it my duty and compliance was 00:16:07.83\00:16:10.19 what God says by John the revelator to 00:16:10.22\00:16:12.21 come out for my people that you may be 00:16:12.24\00:16:14.92 not partakers of our sins and that you receive 00:16:14.95\00:16:16.81 not our pledges, do request of you 00:16:16.84\00:16:19.24 that my name be erased from the church record as I shall 00:16:19.27\00:16:21.26 no longer consider myself a member of your church. 00:16:21.29\00:16:24.08 That was the first sentence as I say they do 00:16:24.71\00:16:27.02 you had a pack a lot in to a sentence, here is the 00:16:27.05\00:16:29.09 second one, I feel that I do this in conformity 00:16:29.12\00:16:31.70 to the requirements of the great head 00:16:31.73\00:16:33.14 of the church. And now in his name 00:16:33.17\00:16:35.18 I'll beseech you all not to make lie anymore 00:16:35.21\00:16:38.04 of the coming of the blessed lord. 00:16:38.07\00:16:39.57 For at that appointed time, he will come and not 00:16:39.60\00:16:42.11 Terry. All the unbelief of the world 00:16:42.14\00:16:44.26 will not stop him. So do get ready 00:16:44.29\00:16:46.49 by making a full consecration of yourselves 00:16:46.52\00:16:48.78 to the living God for as in the days of Noah. 00:16:48.81\00:16:51.07 So, shall the coming of the son of man be. 00:16:51.10\00:16:52.83 That was his appeal to them and of course then the 00:16:54.30\00:16:57.16 following year in October, he left those potatoes 00:16:57.19\00:17:01.29 in the field as a testimony of his faith. 00:17:01.32\00:17:04.32 He would not even dig them and sell them 00:17:04.94\00:17:06.31 and then you know the story 00:17:07.53\00:17:08.50 you've all heard the story. How potatoes blight disease. 00:17:08.51\00:17:11.12 Rotted potatoes that were dug here in New 00:17:11.15\00:17:13.66 England that fall and so in the spring 00:17:13.69\00:17:16.82 when Hastings went out into his field 00:17:16.85\00:17:19.14 apparently kicking around in the dirt little he 00:17:19.17\00:17:21.33 realize that the potatoes had not frozen 00:17:21.36\00:17:23.68 and he dug the potatoes and they were good. 00:17:23.71\00:17:26.47 And he sold them for more then he had because 00:17:27.05\00:17:29.11 all the potatoes are rotted. He sold them for more then 00:17:29.14\00:17:30.11 he would have received had he dug them in the fall. 00:17:30.12\00:17:33.34 Now if you are skeptic like I am about some 00:17:33.37\00:17:35.45 of these stories was that really 00:17:35.48\00:17:37.41 a potato blight was that really a 00:17:37.44\00:17:40.05 rot of the potatoes. Is this story could possibly be true. 00:17:40.08\00:17:43.48 Well, I want to show you a photocopy 00:17:44.28\00:17:46.95 of a paper, this was Xerox copy 00:17:46.98\00:17:49.99 that I made out of a paper that I own. So, I know 00:17:50.02\00:17:51.63 it's a good paper because I have it in my library at 00:17:51.66\00:17:53.99 home. It's the Gospel banner published in Augusta Maine 00:17:54.02\00:17:57.41 October 26, 1844, the very week of the disappointment 00:17:57.44\00:18:01.78 and it talks about the potato disease. 00:18:01.81\00:18:03.76 In fact, if you go back to old farmers 00:18:03.79\00:18:05.77 papers from that year. You'll find there was 00:18:05.80\00:18:09.07 a lot of discussion about the potato disease. 00:18:09.10\00:18:11.46 They did not know what was happening to their potatoes 00:18:11.49\00:18:14.05 except they knew they were all spoiling and 00:18:14.08\00:18:15.52 rotting. So yes the story has a very firm basis 00:18:15.55\00:18:18.96 and the man who had the faith 00:18:18.99\00:18:21.27 and left his potatoes there. As I said lived here 00:18:21.30\00:18:24.44 and had his field across the way. 00:18:24.47\00:18:26.43 Expectations arouse as the October 22nd date 00:18:29.09\00:18:31.26 neared. The thought of Christ returning moved people 00:18:31.29\00:18:34.45 to sell their businesses and pay off debts. 00:18:34.48\00:18:36.38 To leave food in the fields and orchids and harvesting, 00:18:37.18\00:18:39.27 to men broken relationships with friends and family. 00:18:39.30\00:18:42.29 And to look forward to see loved ones from whom 00:18:43.21\00:18:45.00 they have been separated by death. 00:18:45.03\00:18:46.74 Jim Nix took us to ascension rock 00:18:48.79\00:18:50.44 next to Millers farm in Low Hampton, New York. 00:18:50.47\00:18:52.41 The place where tradition says William Miller waited 00:18:53.80\00:18:55.43 with family and friends for Christ to return to earth. 00:18:55.46\00:18:58.16 We are standing on ascension rock. 00:18:59.72\00:19:01.87 Ascension rock gets the name from the fact 00:19:03.12\00:19:05.18 that we're told by members in the Miller family. 00:19:06.63\00:19:09.35 So this is the very old tradition 00:19:10.41\00:19:11.58 in the Miller family that on October 22, 00:19:11.61\00:19:14.70 1844, the Adventist in this area 00:19:14.73\00:19:18.44 came here to William Miller's farm 00:19:18.47\00:19:21.42 to this outcropping of lime stone 00:19:21.45\00:19:23.94 and here they waited for Jesus to return that day. 00:19:23.97\00:19:27.26 Now you can feel or imagine what it must have been like 00:19:28.34\00:19:32.47 back there in 1844. You have to imagine a 00:19:32.97\00:19:35.06 little now because this was the working farm. 00:19:35.09\00:19:37.36 Some of you may have seen the picture 00:19:37.39\00:19:39.08 in the display case over in the house 00:19:39.11\00:19:40.70 of how this farm even looked in 1950. 00:19:40.73\00:19:43.26 This was a working farm, so all these trees 00:19:43.92\00:19:45.54 were not here at that time. So this outcropping of rock 00:19:45.57\00:19:48.96 would have given you a view, if we didn't have these 00:19:50.31\00:19:52.65 trees here, a view from arisen to arising. 00:19:52.68\00:19:55.63 So that you could come out here 00:19:56.29\00:19:57.26 and watch for the Lord to come 00:19:57.27\00:19:58.98 on that day. Now we don't know 00:20:00.34\00:20:02.16 how many people were actually here. 00:20:02.19\00:20:04.10 There is no record, not even a rumor 00:20:04.13\00:20:06.81 of how many people gathered that particular day. 00:20:06.84\00:20:09.64 But as I was trying to describe 00:20:10.80\00:20:12.61 in the chapel earlier it must have been 00:20:12.64\00:20:15.89 something very special to be here or in a grove 00:20:15.92\00:20:18.96 or in a church somewhere that day. 00:20:18.99\00:20:20.97 Believing that after all these years 00:20:22.01\00:20:24.29 preaching then being left at by your neighbors 00:20:25.57\00:20:27.82 and scorn ridicule Jesus was finally coming on this day. 00:20:27.85\00:20:32.14 And then what a disappointment 00:20:33.04\00:20:35.08 and you can see why they called it as a great 00:20:35.11\00:20:37.89 disappointment. Just one illustration to help you 00:20:37.92\00:20:41.88 realize why they call the great 00:20:41.91\00:20:43.44 disappointment. Charles Fitch one of 00:20:43.47\00:20:46.04 the prominent Millerite leaders who had been 00:20:46.82\00:20:50.12 preaching in September. He was, he did a Baptism 00:20:50.15\00:20:53.79 in a lake, he caught a cold and he died 00:20:53.82\00:20:56.73 Monday, October 14th, so just a weak 00:20:56.76\00:20:59.86 and a day before. His obituary 00:20:59.89\00:21:02.68 was sent to the editor of the Millerite paper, 00:21:02.71\00:21:05.22 The Midnight Cry, and it didn't arrive 00:21:05.25\00:21:08.52 in time to get into that October 19th issue 00:21:08.55\00:21:10.59 the last issue that came out 00:21:10.62\00:21:11.80 before October 22. So it was published in the 00:21:11.83\00:21:14.75 next issue, which came out October 30 00:21:14.78\00:21:17.04 a little over a week late, but let's give the editor 00:21:17.07\00:21:21.53 a little bit of slack, he expected to be in heaven 00:21:21.56\00:21:23.79 he had not thought about putting out another paper. 00:21:23.82\00:21:25.59 So, it was few days late getting that next issue out 00:21:25.62\00:21:27.61 we can understand, but Charles Fitch is 00:21:27.64\00:21:29.84 obituary in there, talks about his illness, 00:21:29.87\00:21:32.46 talks about his death, and in the last sentence 00:21:32.49\00:21:35.27 of that obituary gives us an insight 00:21:35.30\00:21:38.30 into what it must have been like 00:21:38.33\00:21:39.54 and why it was called the great disappointment. 00:21:39.57\00:21:41.52 Is that last sentence said that his widow 00:21:41.55\00:21:44.50 and fatherless children are now at Cleveland 00:21:44.53\00:21:47.56 confidently expecting the soon return of our Lord. 00:21:47.59\00:21:50.67 And that doesn't take a lot of imagination 00:21:52.70\00:21:53.67 does it to picture that funeral. 00:21:53.68\00:21:55.58 Mrs. Fitch, the children and she says to those 00:21:55.61\00:21:59.52 children who were crying their by the casket 00:21:59.55\00:22:01.45 of their father, don't cry next Tuesday when Jesus 00:22:01.48\00:22:05.28 comes we'll see Papa again. And you could begin to 00:22:05.31\00:22:09.62 understand why it came to be known as 00:22:09.65\00:22:11.70 the great disappointment. 00:22:11.73\00:22:13.15 Now after the spring disappointment 00:22:14.78\00:22:16.55 spring of 1844, the first one that I talked about earlier 00:22:16.58\00:22:20.27 William Miller who is a poet, 00:22:20.30\00:22:21.73 I don't know if you knew that 00:22:21.76\00:22:22.98 William Miller wrote poetry, wrote number of poems 00:22:23.01\00:22:25.52 but he wrote one expressing his disappointment 00:22:25.55\00:22:28.19 in the spring of 1844 just three stanzas 00:22:28.22\00:22:31.16 I would like to read it to you. 00:22:31.19\00:22:32.32 How tedious and lonesome the hours, 00:22:33.89\00:22:35.60 While Jesus my Savior delays. 00:22:35.63\00:22:37.95 I've sought Him in Solitude's bowers, 00:22:37.98\00:22:40.89 And looked for Him all the long days. 00:22:40.92\00:22:43.42 Yet He lingers. I pray tell me why 00:22:44.40\00:22:46.12 His chariot no sooner returns? 00:22:46.15\00:22:47.89 To see Him in clouds of the sky 00:22:47.92\00:22:50.23 My soul with intensity burns. 00:22:50.26\00:22:52.60 I long to be with Him at home, 00:22:53.52\00:22:54.91 My heart swallowed up in His love. 00:22:54.94\00:22:57.90 On the fields of New Eden to roam. 00:22:57.93\00:23:00.78 And to dwell with my Savior above. 00:23:00.81\00:23:03.89 The day after October 22nd got great disappointment in 00:23:10.01\00:23:12.66 the ranks of the Millerites what had gone wrong? 00:23:12.69\00:23:15.64 The evidence was so strong soon after the event. 00:23:16.59\00:23:19.35 William Miller sent a letter sharing his feelings 00:23:19.38\00:23:21.91 on the topic. Historian John Wood 00:23:21.94\00:23:24.22 shares that letter. Eight days after the 00:23:24.25\00:23:27.97 so called great disappointment 00:23:28.00\00:23:29.52 and Christ hadn't come on the day of atonement 00:23:29.55\00:23:32.89 as figured in the Karaite calendar 00:23:33.74\00:23:35.13 in 1844, he wrote a letter that did indeed 00:23:35.16\00:23:39.78 go to The Midnight Cry stating his position 00:23:39.81\00:23:42.73 On what had happened in October of 1844, 00:23:42.76\00:23:47.00 This is significant I want to read one 00:23:47.03\00:23:49.19 statement from the letter. This is a test 00:23:49.22\00:23:54.66 to them who look for him he will appear second time 00:23:58.42\00:24:00.11 without sin unto salvation 00:24:00.14\00:24:01.65 I must and will submit for God is good 00:24:03.80\00:24:06.27 that he knows the day. I pray that you have the 00:24:06.30\00:24:11.03 Spirit of God in your convention 00:24:11.06\00:24:12.97 referring to New York City and ask an interest 00:24:13.00\00:24:15.43 in your prayers that I maybe resign 00:24:15.46\00:24:17.86 would ever comes. My hope is strong 00:24:17.89\00:24:20.55 and my faith in 1844 has waved not, 00:24:20.58\00:24:24.78 come Jesus come. What's interesting here is 00:24:24.81\00:24:30.64 that immediately after the disappointment 00:24:32.41\00:24:33.50 Miller was still holding to the idea that 00:24:33.53\00:24:37.88 something significant happened in 1844. 00:24:37.91\00:24:41.05 Soon after the disappointment 00:24:42.58\00:24:43.62 Hiram Edson gathered with some friends 00:24:43.65\00:24:45.96 to pray earnestly that the Lord would show 00:24:45.99\00:24:47.66 them why he had not come. 00:24:47.69\00:24:49.22 Later, while crossing the field with the friend 00:24:50.69\00:24:52.19 Hiram stopped in his tracks, 00:24:52.22\00:24:54.13 it was as if God was directing his mind 00:24:54.16\00:24:56.71 to an important event that have taken place 00:24:56.74\00:24:58.75 in heaven. In Old testament times 00:24:58.78\00:25:02.04 the Lord directed Moses to set up a sanctuary, 00:25:02.07\00:25:04.47 an earthly temple as a copy of the heavenly 00:25:04.50\00:25:06.86 one shown him. This structure and it's services 00:25:06.89\00:25:10.30 were designed to illustrate how God had chosen to 00:25:10.33\00:25:12.72 deal with sin. As part of the service a lamb 00:25:12.75\00:25:15.77 was slain for the sinner. The Millerite saw this 00:25:15.80\00:25:19.23 as a representation of Christ died and pass over. 00:25:19.26\00:25:21.97 But that was only part of the ceremonies 00:25:22.49\00:25:24.46 associated with the sanctuary. 00:25:24.49\00:25:26.01 Once a year, the high priest would enter the most 00:25:27.47\00:25:29.81 Holy place to make final atonement for sin. 00:25:29.84\00:25:31.90 In a way, it was final judgment of sin. 00:25:33.41\00:25:35.38 Those Israelites who refuse participate will 00:25:35.41\00:25:38.44 cut off among the people. By studying references 00:25:38.47\00:25:42.38 to the sanctuary found in scripture 00:25:42.41\00:25:43.94 the Millerites will let to believe 00:25:43.97\00:25:45.72 that after Christ arose to heaven. 00:25:45.75\00:25:47.70 He entered the Holy place of the heavenly sanctuary 00:25:47.73\00:25:50.57 October 22nd was now seen as the time 00:25:51.90\00:25:54.01 when he left the Holy place to enter the final phase 00:25:54.04\00:25:57.06 of his work. A work of judgment 00:25:57.09\00:25:59.29 in the most Holy place. They now saw 00:25:59.32\00:26:02.80 that instead of Christ returning to cleanse 00:26:02.83\00:26:04.56 earth with fire as they had first believed. 00:26:04.59\00:26:06.83 It actually entered the most Holy place of heaven 00:26:06.86\00:26:09.42 to begin a special cleansing work there 00:26:09.45\00:26:11.58 The final phase of judgment before he would 00:26:12.86\00:26:14.36 return to earth to a award the righteous. 00:26:14.39\00:26:17.72 Through the experience of the great disappointment 00:26:18.46\00:26:20.25 a group of believers was to be formed, 00:26:20.28\00:26:22.26 today it is known as the Seventh-Day 00:26:22.29\00:26:24.44 Adventist Church. A church whose doctrines 00:26:24.47\00:26:27.41 are the result of much Bible study and prayer. 00:26:27.44\00:26:29.99 As Adventist we continue to look forward 00:26:31.90\00:26:33.50 to the soon coming of our savior. 00:26:33.53\00:26:35.15 And although we know not the day or hour 00:26:36.19\00:26:37.83 of his coming. We are certain of one thing. 00:26:37.86\00:26:40.23 He is coming again. If you would like 00:26:41.31\00:26:44.15 more information and the Biblical references used 00:26:44.18\00:26:46.75 to support the doctrines presented in this program. 00:26:46.78\00:26:49.09 Please write to 3ABN P.O. Box 220 00:26:49.88\00:26:52.64 West Frankfort, IL 62896 or call 1-800-752-3226 00:26:52.67\00:27:00.09 and ask for the second coming offer. 00:27:01.13\00:27:02.76 Jim Nix took us to many other sites of historical 00:27:13.94\00:27:16.04 Adventist interest. It was in the Washington 00:27:16.07\00:27:18.47 New Hampshire area that we discovered the birth place 00:27:18.50\00:27:20.72 of the present day Seventh Day Adventist Church. 00:27:20.75\00:27:22.98 Jim Nix tell the story. Okay, this Church was built 00:27:23.99\00:27:27.13 in 1842, it was at that time a Christian connection church. 00:27:27.16\00:27:33.03 This was a group of sort of independent churches 00:27:33.80\00:27:37.78 that kind of agreed on the theology 00:27:37.81\00:27:39.38 and the members and this into the western community 00:27:39.41\00:27:41.89 decided they wanted to build church. 00:27:41.92\00:27:43.86 Now, we went by the church up there on the town green 00:27:43.89\00:27:46.14 that's were other people work the other end of the 00:27:46.17\00:27:48.60 community, but this was the forming community 00:27:48.63\00:27:50.30 down here there was no church, so they 00:27:50.33\00:27:51.30 this built church in 1842. Shortly thereafter, 00:27:51.31\00:27:54.99 the Millerite movement came through this part of 00:27:55.02\00:27:57.25 New Hampshire and the majority of this church 00:27:57.28\00:27:59.33 the members became Millerite Adventist. 00:27:59.36\00:28:02.96 So, now we have Christians who are Millerites 00:28:02.99\00:28:06.90 they have an ------ minister 00:28:06.93\00:28:09.16 one who lived over in Hillsborough. 00:28:09.19\00:28:11.11 His name was Frederick Wheeler 00:28:11.14\00:28:12.92 he would come through here occasionally 00:28:12.95\00:28:14.53 on Sunday and he would be holding services 00:28:14.56\00:28:17.09 in his church. Now I realized this picture 00:28:17.12\00:28:19.91 Of Fredrick Wheeler makes him look very old. 00:28:19.94\00:28:22.18 He lived to be 99, but in the 1840s he was in his 30s, 00:28:22.21\00:28:25.93 so if you just darken up the beard and take it clear off 00:28:25.96\00:28:28.50 in your imagination that you can picture how 00:28:28.53\00:28:30.80 he would have looked on a Sunday when he was here 00:28:30.83\00:28:33.10 preaching in this church people would come. 00:28:33.13\00:28:35.80 Now the winter of 1843, 1844, there was a widow 00:28:35.83\00:28:40.13 who came to this community, you all know her name. 00:28:40.16\00:28:42.81 Rachel Oaks or sometimes you've heard as 00:28:42.84\00:28:45.45 Rachel Oaks Preston, she came as a widow 00:28:45.48\00:28:48.39 and she found the man. Oh! She found someone to get 00:28:49.70\00:28:52.02 married to here by the name of Nathan T. Preston 00:28:52.05\00:28:54.44 and so she left here as Rachel Oaks Preston 00:28:55.66\00:28:57.61 but she became Rachel Oaks. Her daughter Delight Oaks 00:28:57.64\00:29:00.87 was invited to be local school teacher 00:29:00.90\00:29:02.67 and so we have a picture of Rachel Oaks here. 00:29:02.70\00:29:05.95 Here she is, this lady was The Seventh-Day Baptist. 00:29:07.19\00:29:10.54 She was not a Millerite, but she was Seventh-Day Baptist 00:29:11.41\00:29:14.24 and since she was here and had her room 00:29:14.27\00:29:17.28 apparently listed daughter room for a while 00:29:17.31\00:29:19.40 or rented a room from Cyrus Farnsworth 00:29:19.43\00:29:21.51 who live not too far over here. 00:29:21.54\00:29:22.92 One of the early members of this congregation, why 00:29:24.13\00:29:25.83 probably that's were Rachel would have stayed also and so 00:29:27.25\00:29:31.27 said she was closes to this church 00:29:31.30\00:29:32.78 on Sundays even though she was a good Sabbath 00:29:32.81\00:29:35.22 Keeper. She was a Seventh-Day Baptist. 00:29:35.25\00:29:36.97 She would come to this church 00:29:37.00\00:29:38.80 for Christian fellowship, she kept Sabbath at home, 00:29:38.83\00:29:41.10 don't misunderstand, she kept Sabbath 00:29:43.23\00:29:44.53 but then she came here to be with other Christians. 00:29:44.56\00:29:46.51 and that's how come during that winter of 1843 00:29:47.48\00:29:51.27 and 1844 probably late 1843 when Fredrick Wheeler 00:29:51.30\00:29:57.32 was here preaching a community sermon. 00:29:57.35\00:29:59.72 Rachel Oaks was also here sitting on somewhere 00:30:00.99\00:30:03.56 on this side of the church this was the ladies side 00:30:03.59\00:30:05.66 of the church, there is was the men side over here. 00:30:05.69\00:30:09.13 So, she was sitting over here somewhere 00:30:09.16\00:30:13.31 and she can hardly keep her seat 00:30:13.34\00:30:14.31 when Fredrick Wheeler you know the story, 00:30:14.32\00:30:16.32 I'm just reviewing it since it happened here. 00:30:16.35\00:30:18.20 Fredrick Wheeler announced to the congregation 00:30:18.23\00:30:21.56 that all of those who planned on participating 00:30:21.59\00:30:24.42 in the community service that day 00:30:24.45\00:30:26.58 should be keepers of God's Ten Commandments 00:30:26.61\00:30:29.08 and here is this good Seventh-Day Baptist 00:30:30.73\00:30:32.19 sitting there on Sunday listening to the preacher 00:30:32.22\00:30:34.77 you can imagine, she can hardly keep her seat, 00:30:34.80\00:30:36.24 but she apparently did and eventually she met him 00:30:37.36\00:30:40.14 later in the week in town somewhere 00:30:40.17\00:30:42.97 and she said I ---- to talk with you 00:30:43.00\00:30:45.68 and she gave him a Bible study 00:30:46.12\00:30:47.09 probably gave him some tracks too 00:30:47.10\00:30:48.33 I don't know for sure. And Fredrick Wheeler then 00:30:48.36\00:30:51.39 being a good honest soul he studied it out 00:30:51.42\00:30:54.30 and he decided that she was correct, 00:30:54.33\00:30:56.73 the Biblical evidence supported the Seventh-Day 00:30:56.76\00:30:59.53 as the day, we should worship on. 00:30:59.56\00:31:01.64 And so not here, but according to his son 00:31:02.83\00:31:05.00 George Wheeler in a memory statement 00:31:05.03\00:31:07.57 the first sermon that Fredrick Wheeler 00:31:07.60\00:31:09.55 preached was over in Hillsborough 00:31:09.58\00:31:11.52 on March 16, 1844 that was his first sermon 00:31:11.55\00:31:16.04 advocating the Seventh Day Sabbath. 00:31:16.07\00:31:18.82 Now, not much was said about the Seventh Day 00:31:18.85\00:31:20.67 Sabbath in the Millerite Movement. Oh! There are 00:31:20.70\00:31:22.74 some articles that appear in the fall not too 00:31:22.77\00:31:25.47 just a few weeks before October 22. 00:31:25.50\00:31:27.30 There is a couple of articles that appear 00:31:27.33\00:31:29.00 so that we know there was some agitation going on 00:31:29.03\00:31:31.43 here there was apparently some there may have been 00:31:31.46\00:31:33.76 some elsewhere, but the feeling of the Millerites 00:31:33.79\00:31:36.13 was we are focusing on one thing, Jesus is coming. 00:31:36.16\00:31:38.77 We don't want anything that gives us any 00:31:38.80\00:31:41.07 doctrine or division and they were sure about the 00:31:41.10\00:31:43.46 Sabbath and so Jesus is coming that were focus on 00:31:43.49\00:31:46.33 and if we are supposed to keep Sabbath. 00:31:46.36\00:31:48.89 In a few weeks, we'll all be keeping it in heaven 00:31:48.92\00:31:50.64 that's fine, if we are not suppose to and 00:31:50.67\00:31:52.51 it's not that significant, well then it was fine too. 00:31:52.54\00:31:54.22 So, there was not much said about the Sabbath. 00:31:54.25\00:31:57.10 After the disappointment of October 22, 1844 00:31:57.13\00:32:01.03 of course the pioneers went back to their Bibles 00:32:01.06\00:32:03.58 trying to discover why Jesus hadn't come 00:32:03.61\00:32:05.80 and they discovered other things too not just 00:32:07.01\00:32:09.67 the answer to that question. One of the things 00:32:09.70\00:32:12.87 they studied and decided, our pioneers decided was 00:32:12.90\00:32:16.23 about the Seventh Day Sabbath. 00:32:16.26\00:32:17.63 Anyway, William Farnsworth have been studied 00:32:18.63\00:32:20.76 thinking about the Sabbath and according to his son 00:32:20.79\00:32:24.64 in January of 1845 sitting in this church 00:32:24.67\00:32:29.33 on the Sunday morning maybe the congregation 00:32:30.37\00:32:32.28 is still Sunday keepers he stands up 00:32:32.31\00:32:34.61 and he said that his forth he and his family. 00:32:34.64\00:32:38.14 Now, at that point all 22 have been born, but 00:32:38.17\00:32:40.57 there was several small Farnsworth's here by there. 00:32:40.60\00:32:43.30 That he and his family will going to keep the Seventh 00:32:43.33\00:32:46.32 Day Sabbath and William's younger brother Cyrus stood 00:32:46.35\00:32:49.61 up and said he was going to do the same thing 00:32:49.64\00:32:51.03 and the parents Daniel and Patty Farnsworth, we don't 00:32:51.06\00:32:54.39 have a picture of the mother, but there is a father 00:32:54.42\00:32:56.66 Daniel Farnsworth, the Farnsworth and 00:32:56.69\00:32:58.98 few other stood up and said they will be 00:32:59.01\00:33:01.05 Sabbath Keepers. Now that divided the 00:33:01.08\00:33:03.83 congregation. The majority of the congregation 00:33:03.86\00:33:06.72 did not want to keep the Seventh Day Sabbath. 00:33:06.75\00:33:09.03 So, this church became the oldest Sabbath keeping 00:33:10.17\00:33:16.28 Adventist congregation because few of the members 00:33:16.31\00:33:19.86 were often met at homes on Sabbath, but the majority 00:33:19.89\00:33:23.95 of the congregation remains Sunday keepers. 00:33:23.98\00:33:26.22 So the building itself remain the Sunday keeping church. 00:33:26.25\00:33:29.29 And we don't know exactly what a change has, 00:33:30.52\00:33:32.15 but by 1862 at the latest somewhere between about 00:33:32.18\00:33:34.65 1857 and 1862 this had changed the majority 00:33:34.68\00:33:38.62 of the Sunday keepers had left, 00:33:38.65\00:33:39.92 remember these were typical knowing the church is back 00:33:39.95\00:33:42.07 in those days and the people have build the church 00:33:42.10\00:33:44.75 own the church embody into it, owned it. 00:33:44.78\00:33:46.48 So when the majority had left and so lot, and now with the 00:33:47.16\00:33:50.27 majority, the new majority were Sabbath keepers 00:33:50.30\00:33:54.01 and so this became the Seventh Day Adventist church. 00:33:54.04\00:33:56.44 So, this is not our oldest Seventh Day Adventist church 00:33:56.47\00:33:59.65 as such because it doesn't become one until about 00:33:59.68\00:34:02.81 1862, so there is somewhere in there. 00:34:02.84\00:34:05.65 But it is the oldest congregation of Sabbath 00:34:06.20\00:34:08.02 keeping Adventist to this day 00:34:08.05\00:34:09.02 if you come here formal about mid May 00:34:09.03\00:34:12.32 until all mid October there is a group 00:34:12.35\00:34:16.28 that meets here. Now, from this church 00:34:16.31\00:34:18.36 several things well not several because Sabbath 00:34:18.39\00:34:22.10 went out from this church and I see if I can help 00:34:22.13\00:34:26.11 put it together for you quickly. 00:34:26.14\00:34:28.86 We have never been able to Prove, where T. M Prebble 00:34:30.33\00:34:33.49 as I say William Seventh Adventist historians have 00:34:33.52\00:34:35.36 never been able to prove conclusively where T. M. 00:34:35.39\00:34:39.34 Prebble obtained the Sabbath idea. T. M. Prebble 00:34:39.37\00:34:43.00 lived over here in ---- New Hampshire 00:34:43.03\00:34:45.57 which is not very far from Hillsborough 00:34:45.60\00:34:47.72 where Fredrick Wheeler lived and Fredrick Wheeler being a 00:34:47.75\00:34:51.39 good itinerant minister if he is gonna be talking 00:34:51.42\00:34:54.09 with other pastors where what's one of the things 00:34:54.12\00:34:57.56 he would be talking about, he would be talking about 00:34:57.59\00:34:59.76 the Seventh Day Sabbath and Prebble became the 00:34:59.79\00:35:03.39 Sabbath Keeper in the summer of 1844, 00:35:03.42\00:35:06.27 so he became a Sabbath Keeper before Fredrick Wheeler, 00:35:06.30\00:35:08.93 I mean before William Farnsworth stood up 00:35:08.96\00:35:10.95 here in January 1845, he became the Sabbath keeper. 00:35:10.98\00:35:14.83 He wrote a pamphlet which we already showed you 00:35:16.61\00:35:18.72 it was there at Paris Hill it was an article 00:35:18.75\00:35:21.36 that was printed in the hope of Israel 00:35:21.39\00:35:23.53 came out February 28, 1845 then it was reprinted in 00:35:23.56\00:35:26.38 pamphlet form, but now we are gonna think about 00:35:26.41\00:35:28.09 the other form that came out first 00:35:28.12\00:35:29.59 the article in the hope of Israel. 00:35:29.62\00:35:31.19 One of subscribers at the hope of Israel 00:35:31.22\00:35:33.60 which is published at Portland Maine, the ones 00:35:33.63\00:35:35.66 subscribers was Joseph Bates 00:35:35.69\00:35:37.92 down on the coast of Massachusetts 00:35:37.95\00:35:38.92 living it ---, he reads it he looks up all the text 00:35:38.93\00:35:43.06 he is convinced that the Seventh Day Sabbath is correct. 00:35:43.09\00:35:46.00 Now as soon as it warming up at least I don't why I said 00:35:47.32\00:35:53.26 that because I've never seen Father Joseph Bates 00:35:53.29\00:35:55.94 but anyway in the spring later in the spring 00:35:55.97\00:35:58.03 maybe took it little while to look up at the text. 00:35:58.06\00:36:00.26 He decided he wanted to come up here and learn more 00:36:00.78\00:36:03.35 about the Sabbath. Now he apparently knew 00:36:03.38\00:36:07.34 something that we didn't know because even though he had 00:36:07.37\00:36:09.52 read T.M. Prebble's article when he came up here 00:36:09.55\00:36:13.16 and some of you would know the story. 00:36:13.19\00:36:14.16 No he did not go to the Prebble's house, 00:36:14.17\00:36:17.04 where did he gone to. He came to Hillsborough 00:36:18.00\00:36:19.36 not wonder he walked whether he wrote the stage 00:36:19.39\00:36:21.53 coach how he got it we don't know 00:36:21.56\00:36:23.19 he given away most all of his money 00:36:23.22\00:36:24.19 as a Millerite so he may not have stage coach fair 00:36:24.20\00:36:27.10 to walk a 100 miles ------ faced him 00:36:27.13\00:36:29.10 at all, he did much more in that way 00:36:29.13\00:36:31.60 later on, so I gonna face him at all. 00:36:31.63\00:36:33.26 But he came up here got to Hillsborough about 00:36:33.29\00:36:36.63 10'o clock at night, knocked on the door 00:36:36.66\00:36:39.31 you can see a sleepy eye of Fredrick Wheeler 00:36:39.34\00:36:41.32 getting up, wondering who the world is at his door 00:36:41.35\00:36:43.83 at 10'o clock lighting a lamp 00:36:43.86\00:36:45.54 ----- called But whatever candle 00:36:45.57\00:36:50.21 whatever he happened to have going there to the door 00:36:50.24\00:36:53.12 and here is Joseph Bates all that's we say 00:36:53.15\00:36:54.80 bright eye bushy tail here he is already 00:36:54.83\00:36:56.92 he has walk through come there 100 miles and he is ready 00:36:56.95\00:37:00.10 for a Bible study. Fredrick Wheeler was up 00:37:00.13\00:37:04.06 to it, he had his Bible and the two men 00:37:04.09\00:37:06.31 studied about the Sabbath all night, the next day 00:37:06.34\00:37:09.97 they came over here to Sabbath at Farnsworth house 00:37:10.00\00:37:11.75 and in front of the under the two Maple trees 00:37:11.78\00:37:15.24 that stood until 1988 and that blown down in storm. 00:37:15.27\00:37:18.27 They studied some more on Sabbath 00:37:18.30\00:37:21.63 and then Joseph Bates get to back home. 00:37:21.66\00:37:24.48 He found what he came for, 00:37:24.51\00:37:26.49 so 100 miles back and again we don't know 00:37:26.52\00:37:28.57 whether he walk to took the stage or having other 00:37:28.60\00:37:30.57 took the train having back down, 00:37:30.60\00:37:32.24 but he came into the --- and you all 00:37:32.27\00:37:34.99 refer the story how he was walking across that old 00:37:35.02\00:37:37.51 wood frame bridge that used to cross the good steam river. 00:37:37.54\00:37:40.25 He met a friend a very patriotic man 00:37:40.28\00:37:43.06 Janice Madison Monroe now brother hall 00:37:43.09\00:37:47.16 knew he was a neighbor or friend 00:37:47.19\00:37:48.65 of Bates. He knew Bates have been out of town 00:37:48.68\00:37:50.34 and seeing round back in those day everybody knew 00:37:50.37\00:37:52.22 what everybody else was doing in small town and all. 00:37:52.25\00:37:54.45 He knew Bates wasn't around, so when he saw down 00:37:54.48\00:37:56.78 the bridge he hailed him Captain Bates what's the news 00:37:56.81\00:37:59.85 and what was Bates response. The news is Seventh Day 00:38:01.36\00:38:03.63 Sabbath. Come on rest of knew that story. 00:38:03.66\00:38:06.38 The news is the Seventh Day, that' right, 00:38:06.41\00:38:09.18 Sabbath Day is the Sabbath. 00:38:09.21\00:38:10.18 That was the most exciting thing, 00:38:10.19\00:38:11.16 he just come 100 miles 00:38:11.17\00:38:12.28 back there you know, he would thought 00:38:12.31\00:38:13.58 he can proudly said something else because that was most 00:38:13.61\00:38:15.83 exciting that he knew the seventh day is a Sabbath. 00:38:15.86\00:38:17.88 See we need little enthusiastic. 00:38:19.12\00:38:20.09 Miller and Bates also used to say that. 00:38:20.10\00:38:21.45 Now we talk about and we used to say 00:38:21.48\00:38:22.88 ---- bless at hope, but Spicer says that 00:38:22.91\00:38:25.97 Bates had another saying ever Bates used to go around 00:38:26.00\00:38:28.85 and say Oh! How I do love this Sabbath. 00:38:28.88\00:38:31.38 Bates is a Sabbath keeper, but his wife proves is not. 00:38:31.41\00:38:36.89 Proved that Bates does not accept the Sabbath 00:38:38.77\00:38:40.27 until 1850 and she is a beautiful wife. 00:38:40.30\00:38:42.98 Have you seen the picture of Prudence 00:38:43.01\00:38:43.98 before this, there is only one known picture 00:38:44.00\00:38:45.65 that I am aware of may just 00:38:45.68\00:38:46.81 that I remember maybe another one 00:38:46.84\00:38:48.86 and this one around here of proves base he called 00:38:48.89\00:38:51.00 her pretty. Now you know, the famous story 00:38:51.03\00:38:54.66 well, first we got to getting writing his first edition 00:38:54.69\00:38:56.94 of the Sabbath track 1846 he has read Prebble 00:38:56.97\00:39:00.71 he now wants to say more then what Prebble did 00:39:00.74\00:39:03.62 so he brings out a larger track. Somewhere in all these files. 00:39:03.65\00:39:08.38 I have a photocopy of that track 00:39:09.59\00:39:10.92 very rare maybe two or three originals 00:39:12.59\00:39:14.50 in existence so this is the photocopy 00:39:15.82\00:39:17.61 of his 1846 track. He set one of these, 00:39:17.64\00:39:20.31 now he has gone there in Massachusetts. 00:39:20.34\00:39:22.30 He set one of these up to the newly weds 00:39:22.33\00:39:24.47 James and Ellen White got married in Portland Maine 00:39:24.50\00:39:26.82 in August 30, 1846 and they read in sometime 00:39:26.85\00:39:29.86 in September or October anyway early fall, late 00:39:29.89\00:39:33.31 Summer, early fall of 1846 they accepted the Sabbath. 00:39:33.34\00:39:35.11 Not based on vision, --- critics like 00:39:35.14\00:39:38.58 to say that we base all of our doctrines on vision. 00:39:38.61\00:39:40.91 Not based on a vision, based on the text 00:39:40.94\00:39:43.02 in this pamphlet. And they studied out in the scriptures. 00:39:43.05\00:39:47.83 It wasn't until April of 1847 that talk so much she had to 00:39:49.52\00:39:52.50 Halo of glory vision about the Sabbath. 00:39:52.53\00:39:55.82 And seeing there is the -- have been sanctuary. 00:39:56.45\00:39:58.22 Now based well so you're not be going down there 00:39:58.25\00:40:02.26 to fair even, let me just remind you of another story 00:40:02.29\00:40:05.70 about Joseph Bates this man of such think, 00:40:05.73\00:40:08.96 I mean he had incredible faith. Joseph Bates decides 00:40:08.99\00:40:15.40 he needs to write another track in 1847. 00:40:15.43\00:40:18.74 That thing brought up to six or seven 00:40:19.31\00:40:21.07 I forgot which tracks altogether 00:40:21.10\00:40:22.98 in the 1840's. Joseph Bates decides 00:40:23.01\00:40:26.24 to write another track, but he has no money 00:40:26.27\00:40:27.82 and again you know the story, it is just 00:40:27.85\00:40:29.23 quick review. And so he is sitting there on his desk 00:40:29.26\00:40:33.15 thinking and his wife comes in and she says to him. 00:40:33.18\00:40:36.67 Joseph I need to do some baking, 00:40:36.70\00:40:39.27 but I don't have any flour how much flour do you need 00:40:39.30\00:40:43.40 about 4 pounds, she responded 00:40:44.51\00:40:46.02 and so he got up left went down to the store 00:40:47.11\00:40:49.67 and there he bought 4 pounds of flour 00:40:49.70\00:40:51.93 and he came back home and gave to his wife Prudence. 00:40:51.96\00:40:55.68 She exclaimed, she was quite surprised. 00:40:56.87\00:40:58.41 She exclaims why did you bring 4 pounds. 00:40:58.44\00:41:00.82 Now see she was used to her husband went 00:41:00.85\00:41:03.42 he would always buy a barrel of flour. 00:41:03.45\00:41:05.58 Now it is just 4 pounds and so for the first time 00:41:05.61\00:41:09.97 in her life she finds out what their financial 00:41:11.83\00:41:13.80 condition really is. He said for that 4 pounds 00:41:13.83\00:41:17.61 I spend the last money that I had on earth. 00:41:17.64\00:41:20.32 These are one of these things -----. 00:41:20.35\00:41:22.20 Now she says to her husband what we going to do? 00:41:23.12\00:41:25.31 and so I'm on the right track. 00:41:27.01\00:41:27.98 Yeah, what are we going to do, I think 00:41:29.24\00:41:30.21 she probably met. What you're gonna do 00:41:30.22\00:41:31.45 about getting up off, you know, what and going 00:41:31.48\00:41:33.22 to work and get some money he was going to write the track 00:41:33.25\00:41:36.62 How we are gonna live and Joseph Bates 00:41:38.49\00:41:41.60 stock answer from the bottom of his heart 00:41:42.30\00:41:45.03 the Lord will provide. Now let you know all he say 00:41:46.29\00:41:49.06 and she went into have a good cry 00:41:49.09\00:41:50.71 according to the old story. Joseph Bates as you know 00:41:50.74\00:41:53.75 was sitting there on his desk and he had the 00:41:53.78\00:41:56.53 impression that there was a letter for him 00:41:56.56\00:41:59.29 at the post office. No home delivery 00:41:59.32\00:42:01.75 in those days, so he went to post office 00:42:01.78\00:42:03.53 he asked the postmaster if there was any mail for him. 00:42:03.56\00:42:07.44 You picture in your mind the postmaster going to all 00:42:08.85\00:42:10.65 of those slots ---- stock places 00:42:10.68\00:42:12.66 that they used to do pull it out 00:42:12.69\00:42:13.82 you know, look through it yes here's one 00:42:13.85\00:42:16.82 5 cents postage do. Now this is the type of 00:42:16.85\00:42:20.85 letters we have in United States back in those days 00:42:20.88\00:42:22.92 unless you are somebody rich and fancy you just took 00:42:22.95\00:42:25.38 a piece of paper you wrote the letter on the inside 00:42:25.41\00:42:27.66 and then you fold it up and then you addressed 00:42:27.69\00:42:30.60 it on the outside and before the ---- start issuing 00:42:30.63\00:42:33.26 stamps you could send the letter out 00:42:33.29\00:42:35.79 two ways either you could pay the postage 00:42:35.82\00:42:37.85 ahead of time and then the postmaster would 00:42:37.88\00:42:40.18 mark paid on the envelope and that man when you 00:42:40.21\00:42:43.30 went to the post office to pick the mail 00:42:43.33\00:42:45.09 it was already paid you got for free 00:42:45.91\00:42:47.28 but in often letter a lot of letters are set like this 00:42:47.81\00:42:49.90 you just took it out and you dropped it into mailbox. 00:42:50.94\00:42:52.71 Then the person of the other hand 00:42:52.74\00:42:54.09 had to decide whether or not it was worth to 00:42:54.12\00:42:56.22 hear from this person. And if you do want here from 00:42:56.25\00:42:58.94 it wasn't worth not too much. 00:42:58.97\00:43:00.69 You just left with the postmaster 00:43:00.72\00:43:02.13 and it went to that letter box. 00:43:02.16\00:43:03.13 Well, Bates was interested in hearing for this person 00:43:04.11\00:43:06.20 because he had been impressed that there was money in there. 00:43:06.23\00:43:08.20 But, he had no money himself and so he said to 00:43:08.66\00:43:11.03 the postmaster, I think there is money in there 00:43:11.06\00:43:14.03 in the envelope if you open it 00:43:14.06\00:43:17.07 and take out the postage do if there is any money 00:43:17.10\00:43:20.68 then I'll take the balance. and sure enough postmaster 00:43:20.71\00:43:24.62 opened the envelope and there was $10 dollar bill in it. 00:43:24.65\00:43:27.61 It was a lot of money in that time 00:43:28.40\00:43:30.08 and we are talking about 50 cents a day 00:43:30.11\00:43:31.35 was a average wage for any worker 00:43:31.38\00:43:33.37 for common worker in the United States 00:43:33.40\00:43:35.11 would earn. So, it's a pretty good size donation 00:43:35.14\00:43:36.92 already said in wrote letters ----- impressed 00:43:36.95\00:43:39.61 to send you this money to help in your ministry. 00:43:40.58\00:43:42.41 So Bates paid 5 cents, we didn't have nickels 00:43:43.13\00:43:45.72 in those days, but have these things half dollar 00:43:45.75\00:43:47.45 of 1847 of time. So he paid to five cents 00:43:47.48\00:43:50.52 to the postmaster. He took his 9 dollars and 95 cents. 00:43:50.55\00:43:53.78 He goes back to the store. If you don't think these 00:43:53.81\00:43:56.07 pioneers had a sense of humor 00:43:56.10\00:43:57.86 you listen to the rest of the story. 00:43:59.21\00:44:00.18 He went back to the store he brought now a whole 00:44:00.19\00:44:02.70 barrel of flour, he brought some other things 00:44:02.73\00:44:04.88 then he said to the delivery boy 00:44:04.91\00:44:06.48 you take this stuff down he given the address 00:44:06.51\00:44:08.73 and he said now the women in the house 00:44:09.78\00:44:11.01 you see you know your spouse 00:44:11.04\00:44:13.33 you know, how you gonna react 00:44:13.36\00:44:14.36 Joseph Bates knew what is gonna happen 00:44:14.39\00:44:15.76 he said now the women in the house is going to come out 00:44:15.79\00:44:17.82 and she is going to tell you this stuff doesn't 00:44:17.85\00:44:19.25 belong there, but you leave it anyway 00:44:19.28\00:44:22.09 and so then he want to make certain that this whole 00:44:24.26\00:44:25.72 scenario had time to workout, 00:44:25.75\00:44:27.45 so he walked across that same little 00:44:28.56\00:44:29.97 on bridge -- over the --- 00:44:30.00\00:44:32.10 He went over to Mr. Benchman Lenzy 00:44:32.13\00:44:34.39 who was a printer there same printer who had printed 00:44:34.42\00:44:36.62 his first track for Sabbath track 00:44:36.65\00:44:39.40 and he arranged, he brought some paper 00:44:39.43\00:44:41.39 and pen, more ink whatever needed to write 00:44:41.42\00:44:45.53 and then he arranged with Mr. Lenzy 00:44:45.56\00:44:47.23 that he would make some payments on this 00:44:48.42\00:44:50.04 pamphlet until he would paid off 00:44:50.07\00:44:52.23 and in fact who himself now I am sure all the scenario 00:44:53.10\00:44:56.36 you know the delivery boy been there and the wife 00:44:57.46\00:44:58.43 all have been flustered about this and 00:44:58.44\00:45:00.48 now its all fine I can go home. 00:45:00.51\00:45:02.59 So, he walks back innocently of course you know, 00:45:02.62\00:45:05.70 back across the bridge slips in a side door 00:45:05.73\00:45:08.97 sits down as he tells his wife is there 00:45:09.00\00:45:10.86 but it's not true all before she goes back the door 00:45:12.16\00:45:13.42 and she sees her husband sitting at his desk 00:45:13.45\00:45:15.43 and you can imagine what a tizzy she was it. 00:45:15.46\00:45:18.65 She said Joseph, yes what happened while you've gone 00:45:18.68\00:45:21.58 and with this trader face he says you keep 00:45:22.79\00:45:24.61 he said, no I have no idea what do you think 00:45:24.64\00:45:27.68 what, what happened one delivery boy 00:45:27.71\00:45:30.18 came and he brought some flour 00:45:30.21\00:45:31.86 and he brought some other things 00:45:31.89\00:45:32.86 and I tried to tell him it didn't belong here 00:45:32.87\00:45:34.58 and we didn't have any money Joseph said that my dear 00:45:34.61\00:45:39.09 didn't I tell you that the Lord will provide. 00:45:39.12\00:45:41.07 Yes, but how we are going to pay for it 00:45:41.10\00:45:42.99 and he handed her that letter where this person 00:45:44.64\00:45:45.79 sent through post we've find $10 dollars 00:45:45.82\00:45:47.30 I felt impress by God to send you this little 00:45:47.33\00:45:51.19 gift to help with your ministry. 00:45:51.22\00:45:52.44 And the whole story tells us the Prudence shown off 00:45:53.78\00:45:55.66 to have another cry. This time a bit different 00:45:55.69\00:45:58.42 than it was before. The early pioneers 00:45:58.45\00:46:01.50 lived in harder times not only was money 00:46:01.53\00:46:04.15 scares, but the lack of medical knowledge 00:46:04.18\00:46:06.39 made life very painful at times. 00:46:06.42\00:46:08.26 The older Nix took us to the house in Thompson Maine 00:46:09.46\00:46:11.51 where something particularly tragic happen to Ellen White 00:46:11.54\00:46:14.21 one of the cofounders of the church. 00:46:15.24\00:46:16.33 And then James and Ellen White 00:46:18.40\00:46:19.49 rock the boys up here to Thompson 00:46:19.52\00:46:22.27 and they left Henry and Edson the others 00:46:22.30\00:46:26.35 really they left the three boys with the ----- 00:46:26.38\00:46:30.28 while they went traveling to visit churches here 00:46:30.31\00:46:34.64 in Maine and you'll recall that one of the things 00:46:34.67\00:46:38.81 that James White assigned the boys to do 00:46:38.84\00:46:41.12 while they were here was to take these charts. 00:46:41.15\00:46:43.97 Now most of the charts that we printed 00:46:44.00\00:46:45.65 back in those early days were printed right on cloth 00:46:46.45\00:46:48.02 this particular chart was not it was printed on paper 00:46:49.11\00:46:51.29 and then had to be glued to canvas and so James 00:46:51.32\00:46:54.51 White informed the boys that they should glue these 00:46:54.54\00:46:57.88 paper charts down to this canvas backing. 00:46:57.91\00:47:01.79 And they left the whole stock of these things 00:47:01.82\00:47:03.29 that would be done. Now apparently 00:47:03.32\00:47:06.10 as you know the river is right hand, we just crossed the bridge 00:47:06.13\00:47:09.42 so apparently at that time in season they were 00:47:09.45\00:47:11.87 floating logs down the river 00:47:11.90\00:47:13.46 and Henry and Edson would like to go down 00:47:14.45\00:47:15.91 and watch and so they would do that 00:47:15.94\00:47:20.28 in between they are working on these charts. 00:47:20.31\00:47:23.32 Now I am not exactly sure what happened, 00:47:25.25\00:47:26.69 but someway it sticks in my mind I should 00:47:26.72\00:47:29.91 review this, this morning, but it sticks in my mind 00:47:29.94\00:47:32.25 that they would take these charts when they were gluing 00:47:32.28\00:47:36.09 them and they would put piece of damp cloth in between. 00:47:36.12\00:47:40.33 So, that they would dry evenly the whole thing 00:47:40.36\00:47:42.33 anyway after the boys have been down there 00:47:43.09\00:47:45.06 playing along the river and watching these big logs 00:47:45.09\00:47:48.12 at the woods been cutting down and floating 00:47:48.15\00:47:50.43 down the river at the sawmills, while the boys 00:47:50.46\00:47:52.69 came back and apparently Edson laid down to take 00:47:52.72\00:47:57.18 little nap one some of these wet clothes. 00:47:57.21\00:47:59.03 Anyway whatever it was he caught cold, Henry, I'm sorry 00:47:59.06\00:48:03.57 Henry got a cold and eventually it turned into 00:48:03.60\00:48:07.42 pneumonia. Now James and Ellen White were all traveling 00:48:08.01\00:48:09.75 at the churches, no telephones back in those days 00:48:09.78\00:48:11.99 you couldn't call and say there is a problem 00:48:12.02\00:48:13.97 or anything like that, but James White had 00:48:14.00\00:48:16.39 an impression that there was something wrong with the boys 00:48:16.42\00:48:18.69 so he told to Ellen that they needed to get home. 00:48:18.72\00:48:21.32 Get back here to Thompson and so they came 00:48:21.35\00:48:24.52 and the account says that Edson and Henry 00:48:24.55\00:48:29.03 really they were all at the train station 00:48:29.06\00:48:30.78 to meet the parents when they came in, 00:48:30.81\00:48:32.48 everybody seem to be fine maybe Henry had little cough 00:48:32.51\00:48:35.44 but everything seem to be fine 00:48:35.47\00:48:37.04 but within just a very short time 00:48:37.07\00:48:38.95 it was obvious that he was very ill and 00:48:38.98\00:48:42.41 had pneumonia and he died here in this house in 1863. 00:48:42.44\00:48:46.04 Here is a picture of Henry Ellen White 00:48:47.02\00:48:48.71 called her first born her sweat singer 00:48:48.74\00:48:51.82 he was very musically like to play the melodeon 00:48:52.90\00:48:54.62 he sang and this is a picture of Henry White, 00:48:54.65\00:48:57.85 Ellen White first born died at the age of 16. 00:48:57.88\00:49:01.03 He is buried in Battle Creek Michigan 00:49:02.02\00:49:04.49 next to his youngest brother little baby Hoover 00:49:05.25\00:49:08.30 who died in 1860. The funeral was held there 00:49:08.33\00:49:12.47 in Battle Creek and then the next year 00:49:12.50\00:49:15.69 the funeral program live sketch letters that 00:49:15.72\00:49:19.43 were written, letters of condolence that were written 00:49:19.46\00:49:21.22 to James and Ellen White were all printed 00:49:21.25\00:49:23.70 in little book. Paul appeal to the youth 00:49:23.73\00:49:26.09 this is published in 1864 it has you arise 00:49:26.12\00:49:29.55 miss funeral sermon for Henry has an old picture 00:49:29.58\00:49:33.67 of Henry in the cover in the front of the book. 00:49:33.70\00:49:36.04 But this little book is a reminder to us 00:49:37.82\00:49:40.30 again that these people were very, very human 00:49:40.33\00:49:44.62 here and they lost their first born 00:49:44.65\00:49:46.34 they have lost their youngest. 00:49:47.19\00:49:48.16 I was talking one time with Ellen White's 00:49:48.80\00:49:50.92 youngest granddaughter Grace White ---. 00:49:50.95\00:49:53.85 she is still living. She is a 94 years of age. 00:49:54.55\00:49:57.74 and she told me that she was 15 when her 00:49:59.28\00:50:01.30 grandmother died, so she had lot of memories 00:50:01.33\00:50:02.98 of her grandmother, she told me that the only 00:50:03.01\00:50:04.30 time she could recall her grandmother 00:50:04.33\00:50:06.70 every being upset about something 00:50:06.73\00:50:09.25 really agitated about something 00:50:09.28\00:50:10.35 she said one time her grandmother was talking 00:50:10.38\00:50:13.93 to her daughter-in-law that would be Grace's 00:50:13.96\00:50:16.44 mother may Willy second wife remember 00:50:16.47\00:50:19.58 Willy's first wife died in tuberculosis in 1890 00:50:19.61\00:50:22.12 and he married 1895. So Ellen White was talking 00:50:22.15\00:50:25.41 to her daughter-in-law and she said to her 00:50:25.44\00:50:27.84 may if we had known then what we know now 00:50:27.87\00:50:32.11 we could have saved Henry. Typical again what you 00:50:32.14\00:50:35.99 would expect here is a mother 50 years after the death 00:50:36.02\00:50:39.36 of her first born still grieving over the loss 00:50:39.39\00:50:42.47 of her first born son. And Grace said as her 00:50:42.50\00:50:46.19 grandmother was saying this she was ringing her hands 00:50:46.22\00:50:48.95 that she was saying if we knew then what we know 00:50:48.98\00:50:50.96 now we could save Henry. 00:50:50.99\00:50:52.93 The spirit of Evangelism was strong in the hearts 00:50:54.35\00:50:56.36 of those early believers. Ellen White had a twin 00:50:56.39\00:50:59.32 sister that she was anxious to win for Christ. 00:50:59.35\00:51:01.80 In God name other next holders of her way 00:51:01.83\00:51:05.20 that she attempted to reach her sister. 00:51:05.23\00:51:06.76 This is from selected messages book II, 00:51:08.08\00:51:09.86 page 260 as a little influence come forth immortal 00:51:09.89\00:51:15.91 from the dusty beds they immediately wing their way 00:51:15.94\00:51:18.86 to their mother arms. They meet again 00:51:18.89\00:51:21.57 never mortal part, but many of the little ones 00:51:21.60\00:51:23.82 have no mother there. We listen in vein for the 00:51:23.85\00:51:26.79 rapture song of triam from the mother. 00:51:26.82\00:51:29.21 The angels received the motherless infants 00:51:29.24\00:51:31.77 and conduct them to the tree of life. 00:51:31.80\00:51:33.20 Jesus places the golden ring of light 00:51:35.32\00:51:37.18 the crown upon their little heads. 00:51:37.21\00:51:38.90 God grant that the dear mother of Eva 00:51:40.21\00:51:42.68 may be there that her little wings maybe folded upon 00:51:42.71\00:51:46.54 the ---- of her mother. 00:51:46.57\00:51:48.62 Now, if you ever read that quotation 00:51:49.33\00:51:50.64 if you discussed in class the ministers here 00:51:50.67\00:51:53.81 in class of the seminary and wondered exactly 00:51:53.84\00:51:56.18 what theologically that's all about. 00:51:56.21\00:51:58.07 Let's put it now historical respective not theological. 00:52:00.54\00:52:03.51 Okay, Ellen's niece Eva dies, Ellen's sister 00:52:03.54\00:52:12.29 Lizzy is not a Professing Christian 00:52:12.32\00:52:15.65 and a twin appealing as an evangelist 00:52:17.47\00:52:22.07 whatever you else you may think of Ellen White 00:52:22.10\00:52:24.21 she was first and foremost an evangelist. 00:52:24.24\00:52:27.18 She will use anything that she can litigable 00:52:27.21\00:52:30.09 think of to try to influence another person. 00:52:30.12\00:52:32.76 She takes the death of her little six week old niece Eva 00:52:34.11\00:52:37.83 and writes to her sister and says God grant 00:52:39.07\00:52:42.14 that the mother of baby Eva will be here. 00:52:42.17\00:52:45.24 Hoping against hope that maybe that, that hope 00:52:45.27\00:52:49.30 would convince Lizzy to accept Jesus. 00:52:50.53\00:52:54.95 From a human standpoint the sister reaching out 00:52:54.98\00:52:58.73 to a twin trying to find another way 00:52:58.76\00:53:01.71 to get a twin to accept Jesus. 00:53:01.74\00:53:04.12 We also visited the grave side 00:53:06.29\00:53:07.43 of a man who used his tomb stones 00:53:07.46\00:53:09.53 to testify of his faith. It's known as the tomb stone 00:53:09.56\00:53:12.94 of the man who died twice. 00:53:12.97\00:53:14.99 Again here is Jim Nix. Here in the Varney Cemetery 00:53:15.02\00:53:19.76 in Brunswick, Maine is an interesting grave. 00:53:19.79\00:53:22.92 You can see its George Cob it's known locally 00:53:24.51\00:53:26.21 as the grave of the man who died twice 00:53:26.24\00:53:28.27 you look at the wording there born June 10, 1794, 00:53:28.30\00:53:31.58 died November 10, 1843 and then at age 88 years 00:53:31.61\00:53:36.56 he fell asleep May 9, 1882. So you can see why its 00:53:36.59\00:53:41.88 referred to is the grave stone of the man that died twice. 00:53:41.91\00:53:45.13 I have been told it's in Ripley's believe it 00:53:45.16\00:53:47.23 or not, I have never looked at up. 00:53:47.26\00:53:48.45 So I don't know if that's true, but I have heard that. 00:53:48.48\00:53:50.49 George Cobb was James White's foremen 00:53:50.52\00:53:53.06 when he was down cutting stone on the road 00:53:53.09\00:53:55.88 cut just north of Freeport where we were few minutes ago. 00:53:55.91\00:53:58.58 And he apparently became a Millerite, it look like 00:53:59.75\00:54:02.56 there November 10, 1843 that's when he died 00:54:02.59\00:54:05.69 to his whole life. He is died to the life of sin, 00:54:05.72\00:54:09.42 but he fell asleep in Jesus because James White 00:54:09.45\00:54:11.67 converted him to our believes 00:54:11.70\00:54:14.46 and so he fell asleep in Jesus May 9, 1882. 00:54:14.49\00:54:17.68 You notice at the top Even though its almost 00:54:17.71\00:54:19.77 gone out, so faith is the Sabbath commandment 00:54:19.80\00:54:22.94 remember the Sabbath Day to keep it Holy. 00:54:22.97\00:54:24.55 Those pioneers believe when they believed 00:54:25.76\00:54:27.54 they even left money to have their tomb stones 00:54:27.57\00:54:30.62 erected to testify their faith, 00:54:30.65\00:54:32.89 their actions everything they did 00:54:32.92\00:54:34.21 was to testify the faith that they hail so dear. 00:54:34.24\00:54:38.84 Our tour of Adventist history ended at 00:54:39.84\00:54:41.22 William Millers grave near his house 00:54:41.25\00:54:43.10 in Low Hampton, New York. 00:54:43.13\00:54:44.32 Miller died five years after the great disappointment 00:54:45.62\00:54:47.46 of 1844, but still strong in the faith 00:54:47.49\00:54:50.89 that Jesus would return. This famous quotation from 00:54:50.92\00:54:55.55 early writings that you're all familiar with. 00:54:55.58\00:54:57.84 I think is a fitting way to close this is from early 00:54:59.23\00:55:01.51 writings page 258 and talks about 00:55:01.54\00:55:04.38 this pioneer who did not come to some of the 00:55:04.41\00:55:09.00 understandings that we did, but of course died 00:55:09.03\00:55:11.52 as I mentioned fully expecting his best friend 00:55:11.55\00:55:14.34 Jesus to return. God suffered him to fall under the power 00:55:14.37\00:55:17.32 of Satan, Ellen White wrote, the dominion of death, 00:55:17.35\00:55:20.68 and hid him in the grave from those who were 00:55:20.71\00:55:22.81 constantly drawing him from the truth. 00:55:22.84\00:55:24.56 Moses erred as he was about to enter the 00:55:24.59\00:55:26.82 Promised land. So also I saw that William Miller erred 00:55:26.85\00:55:29.91 as he was soon to enter the heavenly Canaan, 00:55:29.94\00:55:32.20 in suffering his influence to go against the truth. 00:55:32.23\00:55:35.20 Others led him to this, others must account for it. 00:55:35.23\00:55:39.52 But angels watch the precious dust of this servant of God, 00:55:39.55\00:55:43.82 and he will come forth at the sound of the last trump. 00:55:43.85\00:55:48.21 As we gathered around the place were 00:55:48.24\00:55:51.14 William Miller rests, awaiting to be raised 00:55:51.17\00:55:53.61 When Christ returns. We thought of the trials 00:55:53.64\00:55:55.87 and joys of the early Adventist had gone through. 00:55:55.90\00:55:58.42 and looked forward to meeting them in person 00:55:58.45\00:56:00.49 at the second coming. As we stood together 00:56:00.52\00:56:03.75 we joined and singing to him lift up the trumpet. 00:56:03.78\00:56:06.71 Lift up the trumpet, and loud let it ring: 00:56:08.71\00:56:12.35 Jesus is coming again! 00:56:12.38\00:56:16.68 Cheer up, ye pilgrims, be joyful and sing: 00:56:16.71\00:56:22.31 Jesus is coming again! 00:56:22.34\00:56:26.49 Coming again, coming again, 00:56:26.52\00:56:32.33 Jesus is coming again! 00:56:32.36\00:56:37.89
