Chapter 1: God's Love for Man. 00:00:32.89\00:00:35.45 Hello and welcome to Steps to Christ in Song. 00:00:37.86\00:00:39.99 This is the first in a 13 part series, where we will 00:00:40.58\00:00:43.72 be focusing on this little book Steps to Christ. 00:00:43.75\00:00:45.86 When this book was first released in 1892, it 00:00:46.84\00:00:49.19 became an instant bestseller. And within 00:00:49.22\00:00:51.25 the first six weeks of its publication it had to be 00:00:51.28\00:00:54.38 reprinted three times. Today this book has been 00:00:54.41\00:00:57.50 published in more than a 150 languages with well 00:00:57.53\00:01:00.93 over a 100 million copies in circulation. 00:01:00.96\00:01:03.22 I love reading Steps to Christ. I don't know how 00:01:03.88\00:01:06.17 many times that I've read it, but what I personally 00:01:06.20\00:01:09.15 like about Steps to Christ is that every time I read 00:01:09.18\00:01:11.73 it, it gives me real solid biblical truths which help 00:01:11.76\00:01:15.69 me and my walk with Jesus. You will see no 00:01:15.72\00:01:18.64 professional actors or musicians in this series, 00:01:18.67\00:01:21.19 instead it has been produced by High school 00:01:21.60\00:01:23.96 students along with their teachers and staff here at 00:01:23.99\00:01:26.37 Fountainview Academy. One of the reasons why 00:01:26.40\00:01:29.92 we have filmed this series in nature. Is because there 00:01:29.95\00:01:33.01 is something about being out in nature that makes 00:01:33.04\00:01:35.97 us feel so much closer to God, have you ever 00:01:36.00\00:01:39.05 experienced the time when you were either 00:01:39.08\00:01:41.03 walking though the woods or maybe just 00:01:41.44\00:01:43.40 working in the garden when you felt particularly 00:01:43.43\00:01:46.19 close to God. Steps to Christ says that nature 00:01:46.22\00:01:49.48 speaks to us of the Creator's love. Well today 00:01:49.51\00:01:53.45 we're gonna be looking at the first chapter Steps to 00:01:53.48\00:01:55.45 Christ entitled God's Love for Man. 00:01:55.48\00:01:57.67 Why don't you join us as we explore this incredible 00:01:58.49\00:02:00.60 book, to begin I'm gonna ask Melissa to 00:02:00.63\00:02:03.56 lead us in a word of prayer. 00:02:03.59\00:02:05.17 Dear heavenly Father, I just wanna thank you 00:02:07.05\00:02:10.30 for your unconditional love. You know being 00:02:10.54\00:02:13.48 out here in nature reminds me yet again of your 00:02:13.51\00:02:16.19 amazing love for us. And I wanna ask you to be 00:02:16.22\00:02:19.31 with us, as we talk and sing about this love, 00:02:19.34\00:02:22.77 in Jesus name we pray, Amen. 00:02:22.80\00:02:25.33 When I look at the incredible beauty around me. 00:02:31.19\00:02:33.40 I'm inclined to think that who ever made these 00:02:33.92\00:02:36.30 things was inspired. Inspired with a sense of 00:02:36.33\00:02:39.82 balance, with a sense of color, with a sense of 00:02:39.85\00:02:44.21 texture. The Bible says the God is love, that he 00:02:44.24\00:02:48.60 made all of these things for us to enjoy, just as a 00:02:48.63\00:02:52.11 Father does good things for his children. 00:02:52.14\00:02:54.63 O Lord my God! when I in awesome wonder 00:03:34.67\00:03:44.85 Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made, 00:03:44.88\00:03:55.36 I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, 00:04:06.12\00:04:16.79 Thy power throughout the universe displayed: 00:04:16.82\00:04:25.48 When through the woods and forest glades I wander 00:04:25.76\00:04:33.58 And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees; 00:04:33.61\00:04:41.18 When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur 00:04:41.63\00:04:49.14 And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze: 00:04:49.51\00:04:58.09 Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee: 00:05:00.98\00:05:09.92 How great Thou art, how great Thou art! 00:05:09.95\00:05:21.63 Then sings my soul! my Savior God, to Thee: 00:05:22.25\00:05:29.14 How great Thou art, how great Thou art! 00:05:29.17\00:05:46.98 And when I think that God, His Son not sparing, 00:05:59.10\00:06:07.98 Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in; 00:06:08.09\00:06:18.10 That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, 00:06:28.86\00:06:37.97 He bled and died to take away my sin: 00:06:38.28\00:06:45.02 When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation 00:06:45.52\00:06:53.13 And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart! 00:06:53.42\00:07:01.12 Then I shall bow in humble adoration, 00:07:01.15\00:07:08.25 And there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art! 00:07:08.60\00:07:17.01 Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee: 00:07:19.82\00:07:28.37 How great Thou art, how great Thou art! 00:07:28.81\00:07:40.65 Then sings my soul! My Savior God, to Thee: 00:07:41.11\00:07:47.50 How great Thou art, how great Thou art! 00:07:47.53\00:08:01.19 Then sings my soul! my Savior God, to Thee: 00:08:01.22\00:08:09.69 How great Thou art, How great Thou art, 00:08:09.72\00:08:21.68 Then sings my soul! My Savior God, to Thee: 00:08:21.71\00:08:28.30 How great Thou art, How great Thou art, 00:08:28.33\00:08:47.18 How great Thou art. 00:08:51.32\00:09:03.87 Wow! God is amazing and we see how big and 00:09:06.78\00:09:10.71 great he is through things he creates, things like the 00:09:10.74\00:09:14.12 stars, the galaxies, even small things like these 00:09:14.15\00:09:18.23 cherries that grow on these tress here. 00:09:18.29\00:09:20.02 But, you know I think there is a different side to 00:09:21.28\00:09:25.01 God's greatness. A side that's personal, that 00:09:25.04\00:09:29.63 relates to you, to me and this you an see this 00:09:29.66\00:09:35.90 through the sacrifice that God made for us. 00:09:35.93\00:09:39.43 He sacrificed everything so that 00:09:40.17\00:09:42.26 we can live with him eternally. 00:09:42.29\00:09:44.39 That's so true. You know we think of that song 00:09:45.34\00:09:47.50 Jordan, how great thou art, it sounds like God is 00:09:47.53\00:09:51.52 great, he created all these things and he's almost 00:09:51.55\00:09:54.73 like he's distant from us. But, the words when 00:09:54.76\00:09:58.63 Christ shall come to take us home, he wants us to 00:09:58.66\00:10:00.90 be home, he wants us to be close to him, how do 00:10:00.93\00:10:03.65 you think of God you know practically in your 00:10:03.68\00:10:05.91 life, a practical illustration of 00:10:05.94\00:10:09.05 how God is close to you? Well, you know that 00:10:09.08\00:10:14.89 sacrifice that Jesus showed is really what to 00:10:14.92\00:10:19.39 me shows that he really cares, my dad when he 00:10:19.42\00:10:25.34 went to high school, he skipped college and went 00:10:25.37\00:10:28.64 on with his life and then he had family and he had 00:10:28.67\00:10:32.73 my sister and I, and he really wanted to go on 00:10:32.76\00:10:38.33 and further his education, but he had to put my 00:10:38.59\00:10:42.88 sister and I through school. And for me I'm 00:10:42.91\00:10:47.31 here at high school and it's a lot to put two kids at 00:10:47.34\00:10:51.43 the same time to go to school and it shows how 00:10:51.46\00:10:54.87 much he really cares that he would put aside his 00:10:54.90\00:10:57.52 personal wants, his personal needs for us. 00:10:57.55\00:11:02.17 That he would like he put aside a better life for 00:11:02.49\00:11:07.29 himself, and make it better for us. 00:11:07.32\00:11:09.73 So, your dad made that great sacrifice and for you 00:11:10.29\00:11:14.17 that's an illustration of God's great love yeah, 00:11:14.20\00:11:16.42 for you. Thanks for sharing that experience. 00:11:16.45\00:11:18.94 There are many good reasons to accept God's 00:11:21.43\00:11:23.49 offer of salvation. But, living eternally in a place 00:11:23.52\00:11:27.34 of perfectness is not the greatest incentive we 00:11:27.37\00:11:30.63 have. Neither as escaping from the torments of hell. 00:11:30.66\00:11:34.02 You see what should really motivate you is a 00:11:35.12\00:11:37.91 thought that God is waiting to be reunited 00:11:37.94\00:11:40.36 with you in heaven. And that he loves you 00:11:40.39\00:11:42.79 more than anyone else could. When God gave 00:11:42.82\00:11:46.83 Jesus to be our substitute, he give us the greatest 00:11:46.86\00:11:50.62 gift that heaven has to offer 00:11:50.65\00:11:52.35 and he did this because he loves you. 00:11:53.26\00:11:55.74 The love of God is greater far 00:12:24.50\00:12:29.80 Than tongue or pen can ever tell 00:12:29.83\00:12:34.88 It goes beyond the highest star 00:12:35.30\00:12:40.60 And reaches to the deepest hell 00:12:40.63\00:12:45.57 The guilty pair, bowed down with care 00:12:45.60\00:12:51.31 God gave His Son to win 00:12:51.34\00:12:57.09 His erring child He reconciled 00:12:57.48\00:13:02.71 And pardoned from his sin 00:13:02.74\00:13:10.49 O love of God, how rich and pure! 00:13:11.32\00:13:16.79 How measureless and strong! 00:13:17.07\00:13:22.18 It shall forevermore endure 00:13:22.21\00:13:27.67 The saints' and angels' song 00:13:27.70\00:13:34.73 When years of time shall pass away, 00:13:36.86\00:13:41.88 And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall, 00:13:42.15\00:13:47.09 When men, who here refuse to pray, 00:13:47.35\00:13:52.39 On rocks and hills and mountains call, 00:13:52.81\00:13:57.59 God's love so sure, shall still endure, 00:13:58.14\00:14:02.89 All measureless and strong; 00:14:02.92\00:14:07.78 Redeeming grace to Adam's race 00:14:07.86\00:14:12.70 The saints' and angels' song. 00:14:12.73\00:14:18.35 O love of God, how rich and pure! 00:14:20.87\00:14:26.05 How measureless and strong! 00:14:26.08\00:14:31.36 It shall forevermore endure 00:14:31.63\00:14:36.65 The saints' and angels' song 00:14:36.68\00:14:43.13 Could we with ink the ocean fill 00:14:58.38\00:15:03.56 And were the skies of parchment made, 00:15:03.59\00:15:08.64 Were every stalk on earth a quill 00:15:08.96\00:15:13.79 And every man a scribe by trade 00:15:13.82\00:15:18.74 To write the love of God above 00:15:18.88\00:15:23.91 Would drain the ocean dry 00:15:23.94\00:15:28.92 Nor could the scroll contain the whole 00:15:28.95\00:15:34.30 Though stretched from sky to sky 00:15:34.33\00:15:40.79 O love of God, how rich and pure! 00:15:43.05\00:15:48.49 How measureless and strong! 00:15:48.63\00:15:54.03 It shall forevermore endure 00:15:54.25\00:15:59.38 The saints' and angels' song. 00:15:59.80\00:16:10.33 Pen or tongue can never tell everything about the 00:16:13.97\00:16:16.83 love of God. Something we just don't quite 00:16:16.86\00:16:19.79 understand, the words are inadequate to describe it. 00:16:19.82\00:16:23.24 You know here on this earth we have a distorted 00:16:24.50\00:16:26.75 view of love. Our love just ends sometimes and 00:16:26.78\00:16:31.11 our promises are like ropes of sand but God's 00:16:31.14\00:16:34.20 love never ever ends. It's so wide, it's so deep 00:16:34.23\00:16:38.68 it goes on forever. God's love goes on 00:16:38.71\00:16:43.48 forever, and that is the comfort and we hope 00:16:43.51\00:16:46.76 that we have, but in this world we still see that 00:16:46.79\00:16:49.80 there are thorns on the roses and we see a lot of 00:16:49.83\00:16:52.13 pain in people's lives. As Christians, Luke what do 00:16:52.16\00:16:57.72 you think God would have us do to alleviate this pain, 00:16:57.75\00:17:01.66 to deal with the problem of pain in this world? 00:17:01.69\00:17:03.68 I can best explain that with an example from my life. 00:17:06.14\00:17:09.34 At my previous school during my junior high 00:17:10.47\00:17:13.01 years, there was one girl an particular that always 00:17:13.04\00:17:16.52 sticks out in my mind. She was very emotionally 00:17:16.55\00:17:19.86 unstable, she was physically abusive, 00:17:19.89\00:17:21.86 verbally abusive and was rejected by everyone. 00:17:21.89\00:17:26.42 I can imagine that. But, my dad had been 00:17:26.45\00:17:30.58 teaching me something, he said be kind to unkind 00:17:30.61\00:17:34.01 people they need it the most. So, I decided to do 00:17:34.04\00:17:38.92 just that, then one day she grabbed me, pulled me 00:17:38.95\00:17:46.05 aside and said Luke I need to show you something. 00:17:46.08\00:17:47.98 So, this is the same girl, and you've been very 00:17:48.47\00:17:50.63 kind to her, that's not an easy thing, when 00:17:50.66\00:17:54.04 someone is unkind to you. It wasn't. No? 00:17:54.07\00:17:56.02 She pulled me aside and sat me down and she 00:17:58.24\00:18:01.73 rolled up her sleeves and there were just scars 00:18:01.76\00:18:08.34 everywhere. And she said these are all the time I've 00:18:08.37\00:18:11.06 cut myself from all the pain I've been 00:18:11.09\00:18:12.85 experiencing. And not one inch on her arm 00:18:12.88\00:18:16.39 was left unscaved. That must have been shocking. 00:18:16.42\00:18:20.22 Then she looked at me and said Luke thank you 00:18:21.92\00:18:27.59 for all the kindness you've shown me. 00:18:27.62\00:18:29.19 I never truly seen any type of love really in my 00:18:30.22\00:18:35.85 life, then she got up and just walked away. 00:18:35.88\00:18:40.62 And, just this flood of emotions overcame me 00:18:43.28\00:18:47.63 and just we were in a private school, we were 00:18:48.36\00:18:51.72 in a Christian school. But, no one had 00:18:51.75\00:18:55.25 shown her the love of Christ. 00:18:55.28\00:18:56.63 That reminds me of that verse in the scripture 00:18:58.76\00:19:01.36 where it says that we love because he first loved us 00:19:01.39\00:19:05.23 and that love it casts out all fear. And certainly in 00:19:05.26\00:19:11.63 her case she was able to feel love because you 00:19:11.66\00:19:16.17 showed kindness towards her. And I think that's 00:19:16.20\00:19:19.31 what God wants us as Christians to do, to 00:19:19.34\00:19:21.69 elevate the problem of pain that we find in this 00:19:21.72\00:19:24.17 world, thanks for sharing that Luke. 00:19:24.20\00:19:26.47 God is good, but our enemy Satan has made 00:19:27.90\00:19:32.06 him out to be a stern and severe judge watching 00:19:32.09\00:19:35.22 over our shoulder and taking notes of our 00:19:35.25\00:19:37.86 mistakes in order to punish us. 00:19:37.89\00:19:40.29 But, in Exodus 34 verses 6 and 7, God told Moses 00:19:40.94\00:19:44.85 that he was merciful and gracious, long suffering 00:19:44.88\00:19:48.42 and abundant in goodness and truth. 00:19:48.45\00:19:51.21 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving 00:19:51.66\00:19:54.45 iniquity and transgression and sin. I believe God is 00:19:54.48\00:19:58.92 on our side, but how can we know for sure who is 00:19:58.95\00:20:02.70 telling the truth about his character. God knew that 00:20:02.73\00:20:06.28 there was confusion about the subject, so he send his 00:20:06.31\00:20:09.76 son Jesus to represent him, Jesus went about 00:20:09.79\00:20:13.04 showing compassion for those in need. 00:20:13.07\00:20:15.58 He healed the sick, cast out demons, forgave sins 00:20:16.09\00:20:19.94 and lived a life of self denial. His life proved 00:20:19.97\00:20:24.19 that God really is love. Jesus did more and that 00:20:24.22\00:20:27.97 simply showed that God is love, he come to rescue 00:20:28.00\00:20:31.58 us from the slavery of sin. By paying the penalty for 00:20:31.61\00:20:35.60 our transgressions. He come to exchange his 00:20:35.63\00:20:38.81 righteous life for our sinful lives. 00:20:38.84\00:20:41.45 This exchange was so incredibly difficult and 00:20:42.05\00:20:44.70 costly that God himself in a person of Jesus had to 00:20:44.73\00:20:49.76 made the sacrifice, this he willingly did. 00:20:49.79\00:20:53.41 Jesus himself said in John 3:16 that God so loved 00:20:54.18\00:20:58.31 the world that he gave his only begotten son that 00:20:58.78\00:21:02.45 whosoever believes in him should not perish, 00:21:02.48\00:21:05.80 but have everlasting life. 00:21:06.03\00:21:07.97 In my darkness Jesus found me 00:21:13.32\00:21:19.38 Touched my eyes and made me see 00:21:20.06\00:21:25.62 Broke the chains that longed had bound me 00:21:26.74\00:21:32.48 Gave me life and liberty O glorious love that 00:21:33.55\00:21:42.34 Christ my Lord, divine That made Him stoop to 00:21:42.37\00:21:49.06 save a soul like mine Through all my days and 00:21:49.09\00:21:55.64 then in heaven above My song will silence never 00:21:55.67\00:22:03.81 I'll worship Him forever 00:22:04.33\00:22:07.12 And praise Him for His glorious love 00:22:07.59\00:22:13.01 Oh amazing truth to ponder 00:22:14.46\00:22:20.53 He whom angel hosts attend 00:22:21.09\00:22:26.89 Lord of Heaven thou somewhat wonder 00:22:27.47\00:22:33.69 He became the sinners friend 00:22:34.39\00:22:41.06 O glorious love of Christ my Lord, divine 00:22:41.62\00:22:47.97 That made Him stoop to save a soul like mine 00:22:48.29\00:22:54.18 Through all my days and then in heaven above 00:22:54.60\00:23:01.24 My song will silence never 00:23:01.56\00:23:04.34 I'll worship Him forever 00:23:04.37\00:23:07.36 And praise Him for His glorious love 00:23:07.76\00:23:13.52 My song will silence never 00:23:14.02\00:23:16.57 I'll worship Him forever 00:23:16.60\00:23:19.65 And praise Him for His glorious love 00:23:20.08\00:23:26.16 And praise Him for His glorious love 00:23:26.53\00:23:32.22 And praise Him for His glorious love 00:23:33.68\00:23:45.12 You know that song O glorious love reminds 00:23:48.81\00:23:51.58 me of a verse in the Bible. Romans 5 verse 8 00:23:51.61\00:23:56.06 says, While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 00:23:56.09\00:23:59.07 And you know we didn't deserve it, but Christ 00:23:59.74\00:24:02.32 loved us so much he came down from heaven 00:24:02.35\00:24:04.80 to this world to save us. 00:24:04.83\00:24:07.51 That shows us that God's love is permanent, 00:24:08.56\00:24:12.42 it eternal, its unlimited. You've earned in your life 00:24:12.69\00:24:17.34 can you think of a person who has clearly revealed 00:24:18.14\00:24:22.43 the love of God to you. 00:24:22.46\00:24:23.66 Yeah, my Father, God has blessed us with so many 00:24:24.93\00:24:29.84 thing that we take for granted and growing up 00:24:29.87\00:24:33.17 my father was a huge blessing in my life. 00:24:33.20\00:24:36.13 I had so many far-fetched ideas, impossible dreams 00:24:36.82\00:24:40.86 and an obsession for animals. And I remember 00:24:40.89\00:24:44.47 the day he joined our nice town golf course and 00:24:44.50\00:24:48.57 every time he wanted to go golfing, I would want 00:24:48.60\00:24:51.27 to come along with my net and my jar. And while 00:24:51.30\00:24:54.22 he was focusing on getting a putter, I would 00:24:54.25\00:24:56.29 just be wading through the creeks getting filthy. 00:24:56.32\00:24:59.07 And to top it off, after that I would run through 00:24:59.10\00:25:02.01 the sprinklers, but when he was done and he 00:25:02.04\00:25:04.88 wasn't embarrassed of how, how horrible 00:25:04.91\00:25:08.35 I looked, and dirty. He just took me by the hand 00:25:08.38\00:25:11.52 and led me to the car and took me down the road to 00:25:11.55\00:25:13.86 get a Popsicle. And I remember another time 00:25:13.89\00:25:16.88 I wanted him to build me a tree house. And he had 00:25:16.91\00:25:19.64 so many stuff going on, he just didn't really have 00:25:19.67\00:25:22.15 the time, but one day I looked out my window 00:25:22.18\00:25:24.87 and he was out there on his 14 foot ladder in the 00:25:24.90\00:25:28.37 humid weather, it was just horrible outside and 00:25:28.40\00:25:31.24 he was up there building it for me. And another 00:25:31.27\00:25:34.02 time I wanted to raise baby turkeys 00:25:34.05\00:25:36.60 to give away as pets. Why would you do that? 00:25:36.63\00:25:39.23 I just loved animals and I thought that would 00:25:39.68\00:25:41.93 just be coolest thing, so. To have turkeys? Yeah, okay. 00:25:41.96\00:25:45.40 So, my dad was like okay it's your responsibility, 00:25:46.92\00:25:50.54 but he was out there with me every night, building 00:25:51.00\00:25:53.58 stuff for them watching them run around, he 00:25:53.61\00:25:56.56 wanted me to be there with him to enjoy every 00:25:56.59\00:25:58.49 thing and he made my dreams reality, he left the 00:25:58.52\00:26:02.78 world of business and seriousness and came 00:26:02.81\00:26:05.42 down to my child like level and became a kid again. 00:26:05.45\00:26:09.16 And it reminds me of Jesus because he left 00:26:09.97\00:26:12.02 heaven and everything perfect and he stepped 00:26:12.05\00:26:14.62 down here to be one of us, to go through what we 00:26:14.65\00:26:17.59 go through and showed us how much he loved us. 00:26:17.62\00:26:19.89 And I think God knew that my father had what it 00:26:20.83\00:26:23.76 takes to make my life heaven on earth. 00:26:23.79\00:26:25.58 And to show me a reflection of my heavenly 00:26:26.31\00:26:27.89 Father. And even though my father was a great 00:26:27.92\00:26:32.57 example there were times when he marred God 00:26:32.60\00:26:34.72 image to me. When we argued and when we had 00:26:34.75\00:26:37.63 disagreements but he always came and asked 00:26:37.66\00:26:39.73 my forgiveness. And I just think that we need 00:26:39.76\00:26:43.00 to really look and notice all the beauty around us 00:26:43.03\00:26:45.83 that God has given us. Because he didn't have 00:26:45.86\00:26:47.75 to put it there, it might not always be there. 00:26:47.78\00:26:49.89 It's like a little note from our heavenly Father that 00:26:50.37\00:26:53.07 it says dear son or dear daughter, I love you, Jesus. 00:26:53.10\00:26:56.48 Wow! That's a clear picture and that's a 00:26:57.44\00:27:01.07 special experience that you have with your 00:27:01.10\00:27:04.29 father, to show you how much God loves you. 00:27:04.32\00:27:09.80 Thanks for sharing that with us. 00:27:10.65\00:27:11.79 You know God is so good to us, he's revealed his 00:27:14.85\00:27:17.49 love to us in so many different ways, through 00:27:17.52\00:27:19.79 family relationships, through friendships, 00:27:19.82\00:27:22.46 the clearest revelation though of his love we 00:27:23.04\00:27:25.45 find in the Bible in the story of Jesus Christ. 00:27:25.48\00:27:28.47 In the story of the Cross. Let's pause for a moment 00:27:29.16\00:27:32.97 to thank him for his great love for each one of us. 00:27:33.00\00:27:35.71 Heavenly Father, I think you Lord for the way in 00:27:37.42\00:27:40.24 which you've shown your love to us, through family 00:27:40.27\00:27:43.43 members, through friends and through the Bible. 00:27:43.46\00:27:45.74 Most of all I thank you for Jesus and his death on 00:27:46.34\00:27:48.87 the Cross, so that we can live with you eternally. 00:27:48.90\00:27:51.70 We thank you and we praise you.
