Who was Jesus? 00:00:09.80\00:00:11.71 He had compassion for the weak and the hurting. 00:00:12.21\00:00:15.04 He loved every person He met 00:00:15.84\00:00:18.01 and taught them how to love. 00:00:18.21\00:00:20.25 His great heart helped all those who came near Him 00:00:20.92\00:00:24.09 but most of all He was a friend. 00:00:24.65\00:00:26.86 That was who He was. 00:00:27.92\00:00:29.52 Now find our who He is. 00:00:29.92\00:00:33.03 Hello and welcome back to 3ABN Camp Meeting. 00:00:39.90\00:00:42.50 Don't you just love this Summer Camp Meeting? 00:00:42.70\00:00:45.51 We've been blessed by such tremendous music, 00:00:45.71\00:00:48.44 great speaking... He's very humble. 00:01:19.77\00:01:22.21 But I can tell you this: he's an international speaker, 00:01:22.41\00:01:24.95 singer, author. Has the Dream Academy 00:01:25.15\00:01:27.95 that many of you know about. I'm sure he'll talk to you 00:01:28.15\00:01:30.29 a little bit about that. But most of all 00:01:30.49\00:01:32.89 that I'm so thankful that God is using him 00:01:33.09\00:01:37.36 literally to reach a lost and dying world. 00:01:37.56\00:01:40.10 And so while he's preaching if you have comments 00:01:40.30\00:01:43.47 or questions you can text us: 00:01:43.67\00:01:45.43 'Cause afterwards we're going to do a little Q&A with he 00:01:53.34\00:01:55.94 and Bro. Phipps to come out. 00:02:19.33\00:02:21.70 And Bro. Wintley, I was trying to think of some things 00:02:21.90\00:02:24.71 to say but all I can say is I love you in the Lord. 00:02:24.91\00:02:27.48 Tremendous respect. I appreciate the many many years 00:02:27.68\00:02:31.01 of service that you have given to God and to the kingdom 00:02:31.21\00:02:33.92 of God. Your wife Linda... what an incredible gift 00:02:34.12\00:02:37.22 He's given you. And to see you two still traveling 00:02:37.42\00:02:40.12 and glorifying the name of Jesus is amazing. 00:02:40.32\00:02:43.43 Thank you so much for coming here and being a part 00:02:43.63\00:02:46.26 of our 3ABN Camp Meeting. My joy... my joy. 00:02:46.46\00:02:49.23 You're gonna be singing for us first - yes - & then preaching. 00:02:49.43\00:02:51.33 Right? That's right. If he didn't sing I'd have 00:02:51.53\00:02:53.64 a lot of people around the world upset. 00:02:53.84\00:02:56.10 So maybe you could do a song 00:02:56.30\00:02:57.64 after the sermon, too? All right. Thank you. 00:02:57.77\00:03:00.38 When peace 00:03:45.35\00:03:48.29 like a river 00:03:48.69\00:03:52.76 attendeth my way, 00:03:53.56\00:03:59.53 When sorrows 00:04:00.37\00:04:04.47 like sea billows 00:04:04.77\00:04:09.01 roll... 00:04:09.21\00:04:13.78 Whatever my lot 00:04:15.25\00:04:21.22 Thou hast taught me 00:04:21.66\00:04:26.49 to say: 00:04:26.70\00:04:29.13 "It is well, 00:04:29.33\00:04:33.17 it is well 00:04:33.37\00:04:36.34 with my soul. " 00:04:36.54\00:04:42.48 It is well 00:04:43.95\00:04:49.95 with my soul... 00:04:50.15\00:04:56.06 It is well, 00:04:58.46\00:05:02.50 it is well with 00:05:02.90\00:05:07.04 my soul. 00:05:07.44\00:05:13.41 And Lord, haste the day 00:05:24.92\00:05:30.69 when my faith shall be sight... 00:05:30.89\00:05:36.87 the clouds 00:05:37.17\00:05:39.50 be rolled back 00:05:39.70\00:05:41.97 as a scroll. 00:05:42.17\00:05:45.87 The trump shall resound 00:05:46.07\00:05:51.98 and the Lord 00:05:52.48\00:05:55.15 shall descend... 00:05:55.35\00:05:57.95 even so 00:05:58.15\00:06:01.19 it is well 00:06:01.39\00:06:04.66 with my soul. 00:06:04.86\00:06:10.80 It is well 00:06:12.00\00:06:17.91 with my soul... 00:06:18.37\00:06:24.31 it is well, 00:06:24.91\00:06:28.38 it is well with 00:06:28.58\00:06:33.36 my soul. 00:06:34.49\00:06:40.53 It is well 00:06:57.45\00:07:01.55 with my soul, 00:07:04.25\00:07:10.23 it is well, 00:07:14.20\00:07:17.90 it is well 00:07:18.10\00:07:23.34 with 00:07:23.74\00:07:26.71 my soul! 00:07:27.11\00:07:33.01 Amen. Let's pray. Father, 00:07:49.36\00:07:51.40 as we open Your Holy Word I ask that You would cleanse me 00:07:52.67\00:07:56.27 of all unrighteousness. 00:07:56.47\00:07:57.97 Fill my life with Your Holy Spirit's presence and power. 00:07:58.37\00:08:02.84 Speak to me, through me, and for me. 00:08:03.24\00:08:07.32 I promise You, Lord, I'll always give You the 00:08:08.48\00:08:11.25 honor, the glory, and the praise. 00:08:11.45\00:08:14.69 In Jesus' name I pray, Amen... amen. 00:08:15.09\00:08:20.56 I love coming to 3ABN. It's a blessing 00:08:21.50\00:08:24.53 to be with you today. 00:08:24.73\00:08:26.53 You know, 20 years ago I started a ministry 00:08:27.57\00:08:30.64 for children whose parents are in prison 00:08:30.84\00:08:33.27 and children falling behind in school. It's called 00:08:33.48\00:08:36.04 the U.S. Dream Academy. 00:08:36.24\00:08:37.58 And throughout those years 00:08:38.45\00:08:39.95 God has used miracle after miracle to sustain us. 00:08:40.82\00:08:44.19 The COVID pandemic challenged us to do mentoring, 00:08:45.12\00:08:50.19 tutoring, virtually and to do it online. 00:08:50.39\00:08:53.76 And you know what? I've learned and we've learned 00:08:53.96\00:08:57.57 that a virtual relationship is better than no relationship. 00:08:58.60\00:09:03.51 A virtual relationship is better than a relationship 00:09:04.54\00:09:09.04 with the criminal justice system. 00:09:09.44\00:09:11.58 Think of it. We FaceTime online with our grandkids 00:09:12.68\00:09:17.35 and we would not give up that virtual relationship 00:09:17.55\00:09:20.86 for the world. And the great lesson that I've learned 00:09:21.06\00:09:24.79 is never underestimate the power of a virtual 00:09:25.89\00:09:31.00 relationship. As a matter of fact, 00:09:31.20\00:09:33.17 the most transformational relationship I have 00:09:34.14\00:09:37.87 is a virtual one. 00:09:38.87\00:09:40.44 A virtual relationship. I have a virtual relationship 00:09:41.24\00:09:44.65 with someone I've never seen with my eyes. 00:09:46.08\00:09:48.72 I have a virtual relationship 00:09:48.92\00:09:50.65 with someone I've never seen in the flesh... 00:09:51.39\00:09:54.52 and His name is Jesus. 00:09:55.26\00:09:57.16 And that relationship means more to me 00:09:58.19\00:10:00.70 than anything in the world. That relationship 00:10:00.90\00:10:03.90 shapes my conduct and my choices 00:10:04.67\00:10:07.70 and I don't want to do anything to disappoint Jesus. 00:10:07.90\00:10:12.11 Oh, but one day Revelation 22:4 tells us 00:10:13.04\00:10:16.28 that that relationship will transform from a virtual one 00:10:17.11\00:10:20.98 to as the Bible says: "a relationship in the flesh" 00:10:21.18\00:10:25.99 "for we shall see His face. " 00:10:26.19\00:10:31.39 Oh, so please pray for us at the Dream Academy 00:10:32.36\00:10:35.83 as we mentor and tutor these thousands of children 00:10:36.03\00:10:40.40 in the name of Christ. 00:10:40.60\00:10:42.27 Now I love coming here to preach 00:10:43.24\00:10:45.51 because they always seem to give much such wonderful 00:10:46.01\00:10:49.91 and challenging topics to preach on. Today I've been asked 00:10:50.11\00:10:53.31 to preach on the message The Suffering Servant. 00:10:53.52\00:10:58.45 If you have your Bibles, turn with me 00:10:59.32\00:11:01.39 to the book of Isaiah chapter 53 verse 4. 00:11:01.59\00:11:04.46 The Word of God says: 00:11:04.66\00:11:06.59 You know, as I studied for this message 00:11:34.26\00:11:36.46 God led me to another passage in the Bible 00:11:36.96\00:11:40.06 where the same scriptures were used by God 00:11:40.26\00:11:43.13 to change the world. 00:11:43.53\00:11:46.37 If you have your Bibles, go with me to the book of Acts 00:11:47.37\00:11:50.07 chapter 8 verse 26. 00:11:50.27\00:11:51.64 The Bible tells us that the angel of the Lord 00:11:52.67\00:11:55.18 spoke to Philip the evangelist saying: 00:11:55.38\00:11:57.65 Philip, in obedience to the divine directive 00:12:04.45\00:12:07.36 arose and did just as God told him to do. 00:12:07.56\00:12:11.89 He was unaware that God in His sovereign irresistible will 00:12:12.79\00:12:18.73 had arranged for him 00:12:18.93\00:12:20.90 For you see traveling along that same road 00:12:25.67\00:12:28.28 was a high-ranking Ethiopian official. 00:12:28.68\00:12:31.88 A black man. 00:12:32.68\00:12:34.58 A black man of noble rank. 00:12:34.78\00:12:37.15 He was actually the treasurer to Queen Kandake: 00:12:37.35\00:12:40.56 Queen Candace of Ethiopia. 00:12:40.76\00:12:42.52 How many of you know 00:12:43.39\00:12:45.96 He arranges moments of destiny 00:12:50.03\00:12:52.53 with such meticulous precision 00:12:52.73\00:12:55.30 that it often leaves you tongue-tied and speechless. 00:12:55.50\00:12:59.07 All you can say is: "Did you see what God just did? " 00:12:59.87\00:13:04.51 "Did you see what my God just did? " 00:13:05.51\00:13:09.18 I want to tell you a story. Some years ago 00:13:10.29\00:13:13.05 my wife and I were on a flight, an Eastern Airlines flight, 00:13:13.46\00:13:17.59 and we saw this lady and recognized who she was. 00:13:17.79\00:13:20.53 So I went back to my seat and I got a cassette 00:13:21.60\00:13:24.00 of my first recording and I knelt down beside her 00:13:24.20\00:13:26.13 and I said: "You know the Lord has impressed me 00:13:26.33\00:13:27.67 to come share this with you. I'm a gospel singer. 00:13:27.84\00:13:30.04 I want you to listen to this cassette where there's a special 00:13:30.24\00:13:33.01 song entitled 'Lord, I give You my life. ' 00:13:33.21\00:13:35.74 It's about giving your life to God. " 00:13:35.94\00:13:37.28 She said: "Thank you so much! I travel with a cassette player 00:13:37.55\00:13:40.98 and I can play this tape you've given me as I travel. " 00:13:41.18\00:13:45.02 The plane landed in Atlanta. 00:13:45.42\00:13:46.76 She was standing in the jet way waiting for me. 00:13:46.92\00:13:48.72 She took my hand... she squeezed it. 00:13:48.92\00:13:50.46 Her eyes were misty; she had a warm beautiful smile 00:13:50.66\00:13:52.99 and she said: "Thank you so much. God bless you. " 00:13:53.19\00:13:56.73 That lady was Natalie Wood, the actress, 00:13:57.13\00:14:01.07 a few days before she drowned. 00:14:01.47\00:14:03.04 And when I heard that she had drowned, I was shaken 00:14:03.24\00:14:04.97 but I knew without a doubt it was God who had allowed 00:14:05.17\00:14:09.08 our paths to cross 00:14:09.28\00:14:11.05 and had given me the opportunity to share a little of God's love 00:14:11.25\00:14:14.88 with her. Oh my friends, 00:14:15.08\00:14:17.59 here God was arranging a meeting 00:14:17.79\00:14:22.22 between Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch 00:14:22.62\00:14:25.86 because God wanted the good news of His Son's life, 00:14:26.26\00:14:30.80 death, and resurrection to get to the continent of Africa 00:14:31.00\00:14:35.80 as soon as possible. 00:14:36.00\00:14:37.81 So what does that tell us? 00:14:38.31\00:14:40.41 It tells us... I know what that tells me: 00:14:41.11\00:14:45.61 it tells me that to God 00:14:45.81\00:14:49.38 black lives matter. 00:14:50.25\00:14:52.75 And so in the tense social climate we live in today 00:14:52.95\00:14:57.59 while we're debating what to say and how to say it 00:14:57.79\00:15:00.70 God has already settled the matter. 00:15:01.60\00:15:03.93 He's already silenced the debate. 00:15:04.13\00:15:06.84 God wanted that news to go all over the world 00:15:22.52\00:15:25.95 but He wanted it to go to Africa. 00:15:26.15\00:15:29.92 To me that was God's way of saying 00:15:37.30\00:15:41.64 that black lives matter to Him... end of discussion. 00:15:41.84\00:15:45.61 No more deliberation or debate. 00:15:45.81\00:15:48.54 Amen and amen. 00:15:48.74\00:15:50.88 Well that day, this black minister of finance, 00:15:51.68\00:15:56.82 the director of Queen Candace's federal reserve, 00:15:57.02\00:16:01.26 who had come to Jerusalem to worship... 00:16:01.66\00:16:03.32 He was now being chauffeur- driven back to Africa. 00:16:03.53\00:16:07.46 Now this brother... and, forgive me, I call him a brother 00:16:08.43\00:16:12.20 not only because I call all who love the Lord 00:16:12.40\00:16:16.57 my brother regardless of color 00:16:16.77\00:16:18.87 because I especially call him my brother because 00:16:19.27\00:16:23.88 the Greek word used in the Scriptures to describe this 00:16:24.08\00:16:28.48 black man literally meant, and this is what it meant: 00:16:28.88\00:16:32.82 Ha, ha... I love that! 00:16:36.32\00:16:37.66 And I don't know about you... 00:16:38.29\00:16:39.93 I don't know if you've figured it out yet 00:16:40.33\00:16:42.36 but that's the color of my face, too. 00:16:43.37\00:16:46.07 Well let me say it to you this way: 00:16:47.24\00:16:48.90 my face is the color I like my toast: 00:16:49.67\00:16:53.51 just a little burnt. Pray church, pray. 00:16:54.54\00:16:57.55 Now I'm sure you do not need much imagination 00:16:58.28\00:17:00.68 to correlate the Bible's burnt-face description 00:17:01.08\00:17:05.12 with this man's color and complexion. 00:17:05.62\00:17:08.52 After his visit to Jerusalem and for reading material 00:17:09.39\00:17:13.63 on his long journey home he decided he would purchase 00:17:13.83\00:17:17.63 a copy of a Biblical scroll. 00:17:17.83\00:17:19.93 And of all the books in the Old Testament he could choose to 00:17:20.94\00:17:23.61 purchase 00:17:23.81\00:17:25.14 Now he could have purchased a copy of Genesis 00:17:29.58\00:17:32.11 or Exodus. Money was no object. 00:17:32.31\00:17:34.48 With all the wealth at his disposal he could have secured 00:17:35.32\00:17:37.75 a copy of all of David's inspirational psalms & sonnets. 00:17:37.95\00:17:41.62 He could have secured a copy of Deuteronomy or Leviticus. 00:17:41.82\00:17:44.89 He could have afforded it. 00:17:45.09\00:17:46.70 Instead, this officer of the queen's court 00:17:47.66\00:17:50.57 chose, and I believe by the direction and providence of God, 00:17:51.43\00:17:55.10 to purchase the book... a copy of the book 00:17:56.00\00:17:59.67 of Isaiah. Now why Isaiah you may ask. 00:17:59.87\00:18:04.41 Well, I'm glad you did. 00:18:04.61\00:18:06.31 Now I don't know for sure but I have a hunch. 00:18:07.22\00:18:09.78 You see, I believe that the word had gotten out 00:18:10.19\00:18:13.36 that in the book of Isaiah there was an astonishing verse: 00:18:13.56\00:18:17.19 a verse containing astounding promises from God 00:18:17.39\00:18:21.70 to of all people eunuchs! 00:18:22.10\00:18:25.77 You'll find it in the book of Isaiah chapter 56 verse 4. 00:18:27.90\00:18:30.81 Look at what the Bible says: 00:18:31.01\00:18:32.34 Friend, nowhere else in the Bible does God single out 00:19:00.87\00:19:04.31 eunuchs who love Him for blessing and affirmation. 00:19:04.51\00:19:07.91 And I believe from the first eunuch who read that 00:19:08.01\00:19:12.51 he must have spread the word 00:19:13.01\00:19:15.48 and the word must have gotten around. 00:19:15.68\00:19:17.29 God has a special plan for us... for eunuchs who love Him. 00:19:18.15\00:19:24.09 Now that's in chapter 56. 00:19:24.96\00:19:27.20 But before the Ethiopian eunuch gets to chapter 56 00:19:27.40\00:19:30.93 the Ethiopian eunuch is stumped and confounded 00:19:31.13\00:19:35.67 by what he reads in chapter 53 of the book of Isaiah. 00:19:36.71\00:19:40.41 And here's what it reads: 00:19:40.81\00:19:42.14 And so now as he is traveling back to Africa 00:20:04.10\00:20:06.84 he's reading those verses out loud. 00:20:07.04\00:20:10.21 And the Holy Spirit spoke to Philip, the evangelist, 00:20:10.41\00:20:14.08 and said: "There he is! 00:20:14.48\00:20:15.98 The one I sent you along the road to meet. 00:20:16.38\00:20:18.68 Go to that chariot and you stay with him. 00:20:18.88\00:20:21.72 I want you to run alongside it and stay near. " 00:20:21.92\00:20:24.45 And so Philip began a light jog 00:20:24.85\00:20:27.29 alongside the eunuch's chariot and Philip hears him 00:20:27.49\00:20:31.16 reading aloud that passage over and over again 00:20:31.36\00:20:34.33 trying to understand it. 00:20:34.53\00:20:37.03 Little did the Ethiopian eunuch know 00:20:37.23\00:20:39.40 that as he was studying the words of Isaiah 00:20:39.60\00:20:42.70 that God had sent someone uniquely qualified 00:20:43.10\00:20:47.84 to interpret those Scriptures to him. 00:20:48.04\00:20:50.65 And not just any someone. 00:20:51.05\00:20:53.11 Philip was a mighty evangelist... 00:20:53.52\00:20:56.12 one who understand that God did not send him 00:20:56.99\00:20:59.29 on that road to Gaza to make chitchat with the eunuch 00:20:59.49\00:21:03.32 about the weather. 00:21:03.53\00:21:04.86 He understood that God did not bring him to this moment 00:21:05.19\00:21:07.96 of destiny to converse with the eunuch about politics 00:21:08.16\00:21:12.33 or the latest news. You know friends, I think 00:21:12.53\00:21:14.60 it's time we stopped talking so much about politics 00:21:14.80\00:21:18.37 and start talking more about Jesus. 00:21:18.57\00:21:21.61 Philip, this consummate evangelist, this passionate 00:21:22.84\00:21:27.45 soul winner, he knew enough 00:21:27.65\00:21:29.75 to seize the moment for Jesus 00:21:29.95\00:21:32.65 and he understood that: 00:21:32.85\00:21:34.32 that He loved. Hallelujah! 00:21:43.06\00:21:45.03 And so Philip says to the Ethiopian eunuch: 00:21:46.33\00:21:49.04 "Sir, do you understand what you're reading? " 00:21:49.24\00:21:52.64 The Ethiopian eunuch says: 00:21:53.14\00:21:54.98 "How can I understand these Hebraic mysteries 00:21:55.18\00:21:58.98 unless someone explains it to me? " 00:21:59.18\00:22:00.82 "I can help you, " said Philip. 00:22:01.48\00:22:03.45 "Oh please! " said the Ethiopian eunuch. 00:22:03.65\00:22:05.95 "Please come aboard! 00:22:06.15\00:22:08.12 Join me here in the chariot. " 00:22:08.32\00:22:10.29 And as they ride along Philip watches and listens 00:22:11.16\00:22:14.03 as with a puzzled face the Ethiopian eunuch 00:22:14.23\00:22:17.43 continues to read: 00:22:17.63\00:22:19.13 And then the Ethiopian eunuch said to Philip: 00:22:50.17\00:22:52.73 "Sir, please tell me 00:22:52.93\00:22:55.50 who is the prophet talking about here? 00:22:56.20\00:22:58.74 Himself or someone else? " 00:22:59.74\00:23:01.58 Oh friends, that Ethiopian eunuch was having trouble 00:23:02.51\00:23:06.11 wrapping his mind around this mystery 00:23:06.31\00:23:10.09 of a suffering servant. And you can understand 00:23:10.29\00:23:13.25 if you see the teaching of a suffering Messiah was unknown 00:23:13.46\00:23:18.93 in Jewish theology. It was unimaginable 00:23:19.13\00:23:21.83 to the Jewish people of Christ's day. 00:23:22.56\00:23:24.43 And then Philip begins to explain to the eunuch 00:23:24.63\00:23:28.60 what to me is the greatest mystery of all mysteries: 00:23:29.80\00:23:33.94 The Bible says that Philip opened his mouth. 00:23:49.89\00:23:52.26 And you know, if you love the Lord you have to open 00:23:52.46\00:23:54.70 your mouth. And Philip began teaching 00:23:54.90\00:23:58.37 the message of: 00:23:58.57\00:23:59.90 Philip explains to the eunuch 00:24:14.88\00:24:16.92 that the One the prophet Isaiah was writing about is Jesus. 00:24:17.32\00:24:21.89 And this made such a deep impression on him that day 00:24:29.23\00:24:33.34 the Ethiopian eunuch said: "Stop the chariot! " 00:24:33.54\00:24:36.60 "Stop my chariot! " And then he said: "Look! 00:24:37.74\00:24:40.28 here is a pool of water. 00:24:40.48\00:24:42.91 Is there any reason why I can't be baptized right here 00:24:43.31\00:24:47.18 and right now? " 00:24:47.38\00:24:48.98 And Acts 8:37 says: 00:24:49.58\00:24:52.12 And the Bible says: 00:25:21.45\00:25:23.05 The Greek writer Irenaeus said that: 00:25:37.13\00:25:39.70 And Luke also makes it clear 00:25:49.31\00:25:51.11 that the eunuch's conversion was a significant event 00:25:51.31\00:25:54.95 in the advance of the gospel. 00:25:55.15\00:25:57.82 But I want you to know today the words in this verse 00:25:58.55\00:26:02.22 Acts 8:39 have gripped my thoughts and thinking. 00:26:02.42\00:26:07.36 It says: 00:26:07.56\00:26:08.90 You see, I believe the reason the eunuch went on his way 00:26:21.81\00:26:24.78 rejoicing is because when Philip explained to the eunuch 00:26:24.98\00:26:30.52 that God had expressed His love towards us 00:26:30.72\00:26:35.62 through substitutionary suffering and sacrifice. 00:26:36.02\00:26:40.70 When he explained to the eunuch that God loved us so much 00:26:40.90\00:26:45.97 that He allowed His Son to die in our place 00:26:46.17\00:26:49.84 as a substitute for us 00:26:50.04\00:26:51.94 to spare us eternal shame, eternal damnation and death, 00:26:52.34\00:26:57.45 I believe that's why the Ethiopian eunuch 00:26:57.65\00:27:02.22 went on his way rejoicing. 00:27:02.42\00:27:05.49 You see, he saw past the gruesome details 00:27:05.89\00:27:09.62 of the suffering servant and he saw the love of God 00:27:09.82\00:27:14.30 expressing itself in substitutionary suffering 00:27:14.66\00:27:19.53 for our peace, for our well- being. And when he saw that 00:27:19.73\00:27:24.57 he could not help but rejoice. 00:27:24.77\00:27:27.24 And I admit to you when I think of God's love 00:27:28.11\00:27:31.08 expressed in substitutionary suffering and sacrifice 00:27:31.28\00:27:35.35 for me, I too rejoice 00:27:35.75\00:27:37.95 for I do not understand such love. 00:27:38.79\00:27:42.22 I do not understand such reckless abandonment 00:27:42.42\00:27:47.76 of divine self-interest. 00:27:47.96\00:27:50.20 I do not understand such calculated disregard 00:27:50.60\00:27:56.07 by Jesus for His own life 00:27:56.27\00:27:59.71 just to rescue the perishing like you and like me. 00:27:59.91\00:28:03.81 I do not understand such abasement of self 00:28:04.01\00:28:08.45 and the deliberate premeditated embrace 00:28:08.65\00:28:13.05 of the horrors of Calvary and the dangers 00:28:13.46\00:28:17.06 that He faced just to save us... 00:28:17.26\00:28:20.43 to save those who are unfit and unworthy. I do not understand 00:28:20.63\00:28:26.17 God's love expressed in substi- tutionary sacrifice & suffering 00:28:26.37\00:28:31.34 so that I and you, and so that we can be: 00:28:31.74\00:28:35.01 Now we've heard of subjects giving their lives for their 00:28:42.68\00:28:45.62 kings. We don't hear of kings 00:28:45.82\00:28:49.46 giving their lives for their subjects. 00:28:49.86\00:28:52.89 And this news of a righteous King who chose to be wounded, 00:28:53.80\00:28:59.33 who chose on sinners' behalf to wear the robe of scandal, 00:28:59.53\00:29:04.84 who chose to die for those worthy of only dishonor 00:29:05.04\00:29:09.54 and disrepute, who chose to die 00:29:09.74\00:29:12.81 for sinners mired in degradation and disgrace, 00:29:13.01\00:29:17.02 who chose to die that we might be rescued, 00:29:17.22\00:29:22.06 redeemed, AND restored. 00:29:22.26\00:29:25.69 I believe the eunuch went on his way rejoicing 00:29:26.43\00:29:30.07 over such love. Love that would throw itself in harm's way 00:29:30.47\00:29:35.80 to rescue the foolish, to rescue the incorrigible 00:29:36.00\00:29:41.14 like you and like me. 00:29:41.34\00:29:42.88 I too rejoice over this good news! 00:29:43.08\00:29:46.38 Now I want to tell you there are those who believe 00:29:46.78\00:29:50.89 that to introduce the gospel to modern minds 00:29:52.05\00:29:55.29 it would be more appropriate to skip over 00:29:56.42\00:30:00.03 the narrative of the suffering servant 00:30:00.23\00:30:02.70 giving His life as a sacrifice. 00:30:03.20\00:30:05.03 They believe that the subject of suffering... because 00:30:05.23\00:30:09.10 it's not a popular one... And think of it: 00:30:09.30\00:30:12.84 no evangelist starts his crusade 00:30:13.24\00:30:17.11 with a sermon based on: 00:30:17.31\00:30:19.41 Oh, but what they miss 00:30:25.35\00:30:27.56 is that everyone understands suffering. 00:30:27.76\00:30:30.19 None of us are immune from suffering. 00:30:30.39\00:30:33.40 I think it was Edward Judson who once said: 00:30:37.10\00:30:39.43 Too many believe if you want to persuade people 00:30:53.48\00:30:56.28 of the benefits and blessings of Christianity today 00:30:56.48\00:30:59.89 that it would make more sense to hold up a gospel of wealth 00:31:00.09\00:31:03.26 and prosperity 00:31:03.66\00:31:04.99 or a gospel of health and healing 00:31:05.39\00:31:08.26 or a gospel of wonders and miracles. 00:31:08.46\00:31:11.07 Or a social gospel or a liberation gospel 00:31:11.47\00:31:15.50 or a prosperity gospel. But Philip does not shun 00:31:15.70\00:31:19.47 the inferences of pain and sacrifice. 00:31:19.67\00:31:23.24 He makes no apologies about this love that 00:31:23.98\00:31:27.48 shines brightest in adversity. 00:31:27.68\00:31:29.55 Instead Philip holds up: 00:31:29.75\00:31:31.75 Friends, we live in a modern world where: 00:31:38.83\00:31:42.13 We have focused our gaze on the peripherals, 00:31:51.67\00:31:54.84 the temporal, the non-essentials 00:31:55.04\00:31:57.41 and we've neglected this preeminent truth 00:31:57.61\00:32:00.62 that Christ suffered for us. 00:32:01.38\00:32:04.35 Bled and died to secure our rescue, 00:32:04.75\00:32:09.39 our redemption, and our restoration. 00:32:09.59\00:32:12.39 Please allow me to share with you something 00:32:13.90\00:32:15.96 important God has taught me. God showed me that: 00:32:16.16\00:32:19.87 The complete good news of the gospel 00:32:36.79\00:32:39.85 is that Jesus suffered and bled and died 00:32:40.82\00:32:44.89 and was risen to do three things: 00:32:45.09\00:32:47.70 to rescue us from the power of sin; 00:32:47.90\00:32:50.77 He died to redeem us from the penalty of sin; 00:32:51.70\00:32:55.44 and He died to restore us 00:32:55.84\00:33:00.14 into the image and likeness of His Father's character. 00:33:00.54\00:33:04.85 I call this a trinity of divine purpose: 00:33:05.05\00:33:07.88 to rescue, redeem, and restore. 00:33:08.52\00:33:11.49 This is the complete gospel: 00:33:11.69\00:33:13.46 that because of God's love 00:33:13.86\00:33:16.39 expressed through substitution- ary suffering and sacrifice 00:33:16.79\00:33:21.46 that we may become partakers of what the Bible calls 00:33:21.66\00:33:26.20 "the divine nature. " 00:33:26.40\00:33:28.14 That means that we may resemble, reflect, 00:33:28.44\00:33:31.64 and reveal the likeness, image, and character of God. 00:33:32.04\00:33:36.41 And even today we can start the process 00:33:37.15\00:33:40.35 of growing evermore into the likeness of God's character. 00:33:40.55\00:33:44.09 Now that process can begin for you right now. 00:33:44.85\00:33:48.56 It can begin this moment 00:33:48.76\00:33:50.99 with a decision to follow Christ. 00:33:51.19\00:33:53.29 And every day we can grow to be 00:33:53.70\00:33:57.80 more like Christ. Can I tell you something? 00:33:58.00\00:34:01.50 Somebody say amen. 00:34:08.01\00:34:09.34 If you're a touchy Christian... 00:34:09.88\00:34:11.65 You know, some Christians are just touchy... touchy. 00:34:11.85\00:34:13.42 You say something wrong to them they come at you. 00:34:13.82\00:34:16.55 For some Christians all it takes is a little provocation 00:34:22.02\00:34:25.49 to really show you who they really are. 00:34:25.69\00:34:28.10 If you're a Christian who is easily annoyed, 00:34:28.93\00:34:31.50 you've got some growing to do. 00:34:32.53\00:34:34.64 Or if you're easily frustrated, you've got some growing to do. 00:34:35.37\00:34:40.41 As a matter of fact 00:34:41.28\00:34:42.88 Christlikeness is the purpose for our probation. Hallelujah! 00:34:51.05\00:34:55.62 The years we have been given by God 00:34:56.32\00:34:59.09 left on earth are for our growth. 00:34:59.59\00:35:02.90 It is to begin now 00:35:03.10\00:35:04.83 what will be an eternal growth process 00:35:05.03\00:35:07.64 in our lives. 00:35:07.80\00:35:09.14 And throughout eternity we will be learning 00:35:16.48\00:35:20.78 and growing. Yes... always, 00:35:20.98\00:35:24.39 more into the likeness of His character. 00:35:24.59\00:35:28.19 Listen to what the servant of the Lord says: 00:35:28.39\00:35:29.79 My God! 00:35:40.54\00:35:42.27 Faith that does not produce Christlikeness is a false faith. 00:35:42.67\00:35:48.08 And she says: 00:35:48.28\00:35:49.61 And so I state unequivocally I believe that it is 00:35:56.95\00:36:00.06 Christ-like character and not our evangelistic methods 00:36:00.26\00:36:05.63 that will be the key to successful church growth. 00:36:05.83\00:36:09.90 The substitutionary suffering and sacrifice of Christ 00:36:50.51\00:36:56.24 saves us. It is a moral force 00:36:56.44\00:36:59.65 that confounds the forces of retributive justice. 00:36:59.85\00:37:03.92 It is a moral force that shreds all objections 00:37:04.32\00:37:09.52 and accusations that the devil makes against us. 00:37:09.72\00:37:13.06 His suffering - His substitu- tionary suffering & sacrifice - 00:37:13.26\00:37:17.77 it wastes all objections in the fires of substitution 00:37:18.27\00:37:24.27 and sacrifice. That's why John said in 00:37:24.47\00:37:27.58 chapter 15 verse 13: 00:37:27.78\00:37:29.74 Substitutionary suffering and sacrifice. 00:37:40.82\00:37:45.03 As I close today I want to tell you 00:37:48.73\00:37:50.87 I've sung for many memorial services. 00:37:51.97\00:37:54.54 One of the most amazing ones that touched me 00:37:56.14\00:37:58.47 was really a memorial for four men. 00:37:59.61\00:38:03.61 You see, on January 3, 1943, 00:38:03.81\00:38:08.85 in the middle of World War II 00:38:09.05\00:38:10.95 a civilian ship used by the Navy was carrying 00:38:12.19\00:38:17.73 900 U.S. servicemen to Europe 00:38:17.93\00:38:21.13 in the fight against Nazi Germany. 00:38:21.96\00:38:25.30 Their first stop was to be Greenland. 00:38:26.30\00:38:29.70 The Coast Guard told the ship's captain 00:38:30.81\00:38:34.11 that he had to extra careful because sonar had detected 00:38:35.14\00:38:39.41 a German U-boat submarine in the area. 00:38:39.61\00:38:43.69 The captain ordered everyone on board 00:38:45.32\00:38:47.82 to sleep in their clothes and to keep their life jackets on. 00:38:49.19\00:38:53.73 Sadly, many of the soldiers disregarded the order 00:38:55.50\00:39:00.47 because they said: "With the life jackets on 00:39:00.67\00:39:04.24 it made them too hot and too uncomfortable. " 00:39:04.44\00:39:08.41 Well, at about 1 AM in the morning 00:39:10.31\00:39:13.28 in the dark of night on February 3, 1943, 00:39:14.28\00:39:19.85 the German submarine U-boat 223 00:39:20.69\00:39:24.16 spotted that ship. The Dorchester was its name... 00:39:24.36\00:39:30.03 that ship carrying the U.S. troops to Europe. 00:39:30.23\00:39:34.10 And quietly the submarine lay in wait to strike. 00:39:35.14\00:39:39.21 Just when the Dorchester was most vulnerable 00:39:40.78\00:39:44.68 the German submarine went in for the kill. 00:39:45.58\00:39:48.82 In the icy cold waters of the North Atlantic 00:39:50.62\00:39:53.69 the submarine launched a torpedo 00:39:54.76\00:39:57.66 and in moments the Dorchester was hit. 00:39:57.86\00:40:01.96 The torpedo knocked out the ship's electrical system. 00:40:03.10\00:40:07.50 That left the ship completely dark. 00:40:08.64\00:40:11.91 Many of the soldiers who were trapped below its deck 00:40:13.07\00:40:17.25 never made it up. 00:40:18.31\00:40:19.71 In all the panic and confusion, 00:40:20.58\00:40:22.82 however, there were four men 00:40:23.22\00:40:27.82 who brought calm to those soldiers. 00:40:29.72\00:40:33.43 They were four Navy chaplains. 00:40:33.63\00:40:37.20 And those four chaplains stayed on the ship 00:40:38.40\00:40:43.37 to organize and orderly evacuate the soldiers. 00:40:44.41\00:40:49.61 Not only that, they aided and guided 00:40:49.81\00:40:53.28 the wounded to safety. 00:40:53.48\00:40:55.75 And as the men prepared to leave the ship 00:40:56.89\00:40:59.35 the chaplains were there helping, handing them their 00:41:00.49\00:41:05.79 life jackets before they got into the water... until 00:41:05.99\00:41:08.80 to their horror and dismay 00:41:10.70\00:41:13.30 they soon realized they had run out of life jackets. 00:41:14.40\00:41:20.31 And in that moment something extraordinary happened. 00:41:21.68\00:41:24.95 Those four chaplains 00:41:26.65\00:41:29.18 took off their life jackets 00:41:30.29\00:41:33.29 and handed their life jackets to soldiers 00:41:34.42\00:41:37.79 who needed one. Those four chaplains 00:41:37.99\00:41:42.53 from different faiths - 00:41:42.73\00:41:44.70 two Protestants, one Catholic, and a Jewish rabbi - 00:41:44.90\00:41:49.30 that night those four chaplains 00:41:49.50\00:41:52.51 went down with the ship 00:41:52.91\00:41:55.54 into those icy waters off of Newfoundland. 00:41:55.94\00:42:00.78 One of the 200 men who survived 00:42:02.48\00:42:04.82 he had been given a life jacket. 00:42:05.02\00:42:07.19 He said: "As I swam away from the ship 00:42:07.39\00:42:10.23 I looked back and the flares had lighted everything. 00:42:11.16\00:42:14.86 The bow of the ship came up high 00:42:15.06\00:42:18.17 and then the ship, " he said, "it slid under the water. " 00:42:18.37\00:42:21.90 He said: "The last thing I saw 00:42:22.10\00:42:23.71 were those four chaplains. They were up there praying 00:42:24.47\00:42:30.41 for the safety of the men. " 00:42:30.61\00:42:33.31 They had done everything they could 00:42:33.52\00:42:35.48 and everyone saw those four chaplains 00:42:36.55\00:42:39.99 on that sinking ship. 00:42:40.19\00:42:43.19 Their arms... their arms were linked together. 00:42:43.59\00:42:46.90 Those four chaplains were praying together 00:42:47.83\00:42:51.03 and singing hymns 00:42:51.23\00:42:54.00 as the ship went down into the icy sea that night. 00:42:54.20\00:42:58.07 Oh my friends, I want you to know 00:43:00.48\00:43:02.41 that was love demonstrated 00:43:03.31\00:43:06.48 through substitutionary sacrifice 00:43:06.68\00:43:10.39 and substitutionary suffering. 00:43:10.79\00:43:13.82 The died so that others could live. 00:43:14.49\00:43:18.79 Well, I want you to know on Calvary, 00:43:20.43\00:43:22.96 on that hill called Mt. Calvary, 00:43:24.03\00:43:26.70 my Jesus took off His life jacket 00:43:27.77\00:43:31.64 and He gave it to me; 00:43:32.71\00:43:35.88 He gave it to you; He gave it to us. 00:43:36.08\00:43:38.61 On that cruel cross 00:43:39.61\00:43:42.12 God expressed His love towards us 00:43:43.12\00:43:47.22 through the substitutionary suffering and sacrifice 00:43:48.32\00:43:53.60 of His Son. 00:43:53.80\00:43:55.13 And He wept that we might weep no more. 00:43:56.03\00:43:58.93 Hallelujah God! 00:43:59.13\00:44:00.47 He endured our sorrow so that we would be spared 00:44:01.24\00:44:05.51 shame and death. 00:44:05.71\00:44:07.21 And on Calvary He single-handedly 00:44:08.41\00:44:11.68 salvaged our freedom, 00:44:12.08\00:44:15.05 wrestled away from the enemy 00:44:15.25\00:44:18.15 the keys of hell and death. 00:44:18.55\00:44:21.79 And He died so that we might live. 00:44:22.76\00:44:27.46 I Peter 4:12-13 tells it to us this way: 00:44:28.26\00:44:34.20 That means, my friends, that we may suffer 00:45:01.56\00:45:06.23 but we can rejoice because God is faithful. 00:45:06.63\00:45:09.67 You know the difference between iron and steel 00:45:10.64\00:45:15.14 is only time spent in the fire. 00:45:15.34\00:45:19.01 Sure, God leaves you in the fire. 00:45:19.21\00:45:21.42 It is to make steel out of you. 00:45:21.62\00:45:25.05 Rejoice! God is faithful. 00:45:25.99\00:45:30.03 You may be persecuted... but rejoice. 00:45:30.79\00:45:33.66 God is faithful. 00:45:34.83\00:45:36.63 You know, every time I look at the cross 00:45:37.93\00:45:40.07 and I think of His substi- tutionary suffering & sacrifice 00:45:40.27\00:45:44.77 for me, I ask myself the same question every time: 00:45:45.47\00:45:51.45 "Jesus did that for me? " 00:45:53.28\00:45:59.22 "Jesus did that for me? " 00:46:00.89\00:46:05.69 Yes, He did! 00:46:06.53\00:46:07.86 And He did that for you. 00:46:08.30\00:46:10.67 He did that for me. 00:46:11.67\00:46:14.64 And one day, my friends, 00:46:15.80\00:46:17.94 He is coming back for you. 00:46:18.14\00:46:22.18 He is coming because of that love. 00:46:23.08\00:46:26.92 He is coming because of the gift of substitutionary 00:46:28.05\00:46:33.89 suffering and sacrifice. 00:46:34.09\00:46:37.09 You know, one day I found myself 00:46:38.99\00:46:41.76 trying to ask God 00:46:41.96\00:46:45.83 "Why are You so good to me? " 00:46:46.03\00:46:47.97 As a matter of fact, I was actually on an airplane... 00:46:48.90\00:46:51.64 it was the only airplane crash I've ever been in. 00:46:52.71\00:46:56.34 I was flying in on a small private plane 00:46:57.45\00:47:00.92 from Seattle to Spokane. We were going over 00:47:01.12\00:47:07.06 the Cascade Mountains and we crashed 00:47:07.26\00:47:12.63 while trying to land. 00:47:13.66\00:47:16.20 The FAA investigated the situation 00:47:17.13\00:47:20.17 and found out that the pilot 00:47:21.14\00:47:23.64 had forgotten to put the wheels down. 00:47:24.47\00:47:28.14 And so we came in out of the sky 00:47:28.88\00:47:32.61 and we slammed into the concrete. 00:47:32.81\00:47:36.15 I saw a couple in Maryland trying to land. They, too, had 00:47:37.89\00:47:42.46 forgotten to put their wheels down. 00:47:42.66\00:47:44.09 And when their plane hit the tarmac 00:47:44.29\00:47:47.30 the sparks ignited the fuel and I saw that plane 00:47:48.13\00:47:53.27 go up in a ball of flames. 00:47:53.47\00:47:55.20 But the FAA said it didn't happen to us 00:47:56.60\00:47:58.91 because it was raining heavily that night 00:47:59.11\00:48:03.38 and the wet conditions may have doused the sparks 00:48:04.25\00:48:09.15 that could have ignited the fuel 00:48:09.55\00:48:12.69 and sent us up in a ball of flames. 00:48:13.09\00:48:16.42 But you know what? 00:48:16.83\00:48:18.29 That's what they said happened. 00:48:19.09\00:48:21.43 Let me tell you what happened. 00:48:22.46\00:48:25.83 I was coming in on that plane 00:48:26.94\00:48:29.44 calling out to God. I was coming in on that plane 00:48:30.37\00:48:33.88 praying to God that same prayer that I prayed 00:48:34.78\00:48:39.58 when I looked at Jesus on the cross. 00:48:39.78\00:48:42.28 I was praying: "Lord, why are You so good to me? " 00:48:43.52\00:48:49.49 "Lord, I don't deserve it. " 00:48:51.56\00:48:54.80 And I heard that voice that I know as God 00:48:56.20\00:49:01.07 speaking to my heart saying: "My son... 00:49:01.27\00:49:04.61 my son, no matter what happens 00:49:06.44\00:49:08.78 I'm gonna take care of you. " 00:49:09.94\00:49:12.88 And that's what Jesus is saying to you today. 00:49:14.22\00:49:17.49 Give Him your life. 00:49:18.82\00:49:22.52 Give Him your heart 00:49:23.39\00:49:26.29 and He will take care of you. 00:49:27.33\00:49:31.87 You are a recipient of God's love 00:49:33.07\00:49:38.74 expressed in substitutionary 00:49:39.14\00:49:43.91 suffering. He suffered for you. 00:49:44.31\00:49:48.25 You are a recipient of God's love 00:49:48.45\00:49:53.62 expressed in substitutionary sacrifice. 00:49:54.49\00:50:00.00 And He did it for you.
