Previously on Law of Love & Liberty: 00:00:39.53\00:00:42.87 We are standing 00:00:43.27\00:00:47.48 in His presence 00:00:47.88\00:00:51.48 on holy ground. 00:00:52.41\00:00:56.15 He's going to write in our hearts His law of love. 00:00:56.35\00:00:58.65 That's what we see taking place here. 00:00:59.62\00:01:01.26 This is the promise that we see taking place here. 00:01:01.46\00:01:03.29 If God can cause the Red Sea to open up 00:01:03.69\00:01:06.33 and let His people cross that thing on dry land, 00:01:06.53\00:01:09.16 then God can move in your life! 00:01:09.36\00:01:12.00 He's not only Sovereign over the wind and the waves. 00:01:12.20\00:01:14.84 He's Sovereign over what's going on in your life, too. 00:01:15.04\00:01:17.54 Now let's put that in there. It doesn't make any sense. 00:01:17.94\00:01:20.31 "I did not come to destroy the law 00:01:20.51\00:01:22.31 but to? do away with the law. " 00:01:22.51\00:01:24.65 The word but indicates a contrast. 00:01:25.05\00:01:28.38 Here He's actually saying: "Look, I did not come 00:01:28.58\00:01:30.99 to destroy the law. I came to magnify the law. " 00:01:31.19\00:01:34.52 Welcome to the 3ABN Worship Center 00:01:38.69\00:01:40.63 and a continuation in The Law of Love & Liberty. 00:01:40.83\00:01:44.70 We've been blessed thus far by all of the messages. 00:01:44.90\00:01:46.77 Can you all say Amen to that? 00:01:46.97\00:01:48.30 And I know that this message is not going to be any different. 00:01:48.67\00:01:51.94 The Lord is going to continue through His maidservant 00:01:52.14\00:01:54.88 Shelley Quinn. Her sermon is entitled 00:01:55.08\00:01:57.21 The Commandments and the Everlasting Covenant. 00:01:57.41\00:02:00.42 But prior to Shelley coming - 00:02:00.82\00:02:02.15 she's going to have her prayer also - we're going to be blessed 00:02:02.25\00:02:04.59 by a wonderful song by Celestine Barry-Dickens 00:02:04.89\00:02:08.16 accompanied by her daughter Farrah Barry. 00:02:08.36\00:02:10.33 And this song will touch your heart: Fill My Cup, Lord. 00:02:10.53\00:02:13.83 Like the woman at the well 00:02:17.40\00:02:21.70 I was seeking 00:02:22.00\00:02:25.31 for things 00:02:26.07\00:02:27.94 that could not satisfy. 00:02:28.24\00:02:32.51 And then 00:02:34.22\00:02:35.72 I heard my Savior speaking: 00:02:36.22\00:02:40.86 "Draw from My well 00:02:41.49\00:02:43.46 that never shall run dry. " 00:02:43.89\00:02:47.96 Fill my cup, Lord... 00:02:48.76\00:02:52.27 I lift it up, Lord. 00:02:52.67\00:02:55.90 Come and quench 00:02:56.54\00:02:58.37 this thirsting of my soul! 00:02:58.77\00:03:03.38 Bread of heaven, 00:03:04.08\00:03:06.31 feed me till I want no more. 00:03:06.72\00:03:11.59 Fill my cup... fill it up 00:03:12.12\00:03:15.06 and make me whole. 00:03:15.26\00:03:19.09 There are millions in this world 00:03:28.60\00:03:32.14 who are craving 00:03:32.34\00:03:35.58 the pleasures earthly things 00:03:36.18\00:03:39.91 afford 00:03:40.32\00:03:42.82 but none can match the wondrous treasure 00:03:43.35\00:03:49.36 that I find 00:03:49.76\00:03:51.96 in Jesus Christ my Lord. 00:03:52.16\00:03:56.60 Fill my cup, Lord... 00:03:56.80\00:03:59.37 I lift it up, Lord. 00:03:59.97\00:04:04.04 Come and quench 00:04:04.44\00:04:06.44 this thirsting of my soul! 00:04:06.84\00:04:11.35 Bread of heaven, 00:04:11.55\00:04:14.18 feed me till I want no more. 00:04:14.48\00:04:20.42 Fill my cup... 00:04:22.36\00:04:24.73 fill it up and make me whole... 00:04:25.23\00:04:30.83 fill my cup... 00:04:31.47\00:04:33.37 fill it up 00:04:34.40\00:04:35.90 and make me 00:04:36.10\00:04:38.47 whole. 00:04:39.01\00:04:44.98 Amen! Oh, what a beautiful song! 00:04:52.29\00:04:54.36 Thank you! That is one of my favorite songs 00:04:54.56\00:04:57.46 and I know that that is everyone's desire today 00:04:57.66\00:05:01.26 is that God would fill our cup. 00:05:01.46\00:05:04.57 I am so excited to be here! I couldn't sleep last night. 00:05:04.77\00:05:07.80 It was like before Christmas morning 00:05:08.00\00:05:09.74 because I'm excited about what God has given me 00:05:10.14\00:05:14.21 to share with you. 00:05:14.41\00:05:16.31 And let me ask you this: have you ever worked 00:05:16.51\00:05:19.31 a connect-the-dots puzzle? 00:05:19.61\00:05:21.72 You know, where you draw lines between numbered dots 00:05:21.92\00:05:24.45 to reveal a picture. 00:05:24.85\00:05:26.99 That's what we're going to do today. 00:05:27.39\00:05:29.62 Allowing scripture to serve as our dotted reference points 00:05:30.03\00:05:34.66 we are going to establish a connection between 00:05:34.86\00:05:39.13 six terms: law, righteousness, 00:05:39.33\00:05:43.51 and sin. The gospel, covenant, and seed. 00:05:43.71\00:05:49.48 And as we connect scripture to scripture 00:05:49.68\00:05:53.42 it is going to reveal 00:05:53.62\00:05:55.98 the big picture of the Ten Commandments 00:05:56.18\00:06:00.02 and the progression of God's everlasting covenant. 00:06:00.22\00:06:06.13 The covenant that was announced to Adam and Eve 00:06:06.33\00:06:10.97 in the garden, that was revealed to Abraham, 00:06:11.17\00:06:15.17 that was depicted in the sanctuary 00:06:15.37\00:06:18.81 and fulfilled in Christ Jesus. 00:06:19.01\00:06:22.31 Let's pray. Heavenly Father, we come before You 00:06:22.51\00:06:25.88 in the name of Jesus. 00:06:26.08\00:06:28.35 Oh, Lord, I ask in the name of Jesus 00:06:28.55\00:06:31.79 get me out of the way. I thank you for Your Word. 00:06:31.99\00:06:35.42 Lord, we thank you for Jesus Christ 00:06:35.62\00:06:37.89 and the gift of salvation. 00:06:38.09\00:06:39.63 We thank you for Your Holy Spirit. 00:06:39.83\00:06:41.80 Fill us all right now with Your Holy Spirit. 00:06:42.30\00:06:45.10 Let Him be our teacher is our prayer. 00:06:45.30\00:06:47.80 Holy and righteous Father, we love You 00:06:48.20\00:06:50.91 and I want to bring honor and glory to Your name today. 00:06:51.11\00:06:55.14 In Jesus' name, Amen. 00:06:55.34\00:06:58.35 You know what? I talk with a lot of frustrated people 00:06:58.85\00:07:02.68 who are trying to achieve a Christian life. 00:07:02.88\00:07:07.89 They're trying to live a Christian life 00:07:08.09\00:07:09.92 but they don't know how to achieve it. 00:07:10.13\00:07:12.46 And what happens is they hear 00:07:13.33\00:07:17.47 the good news of salvation by grace 00:07:17.63\00:07:20.87 and righteousness by faith in Christ Jesus 00:07:21.07\00:07:24.31 but they don't see the big picture. 00:07:24.51\00:07:28.44 They don't understand. When it comes to obedience 00:07:28.84\00:07:33.55 human reasoning gets in the way 00:07:33.75\00:07:37.42 and they don't have a real relationship with God. 00:07:37.62\00:07:42.56 They don't have that relation- ship that He wants us to have 00:07:42.96\00:07:47.20 of total dependence. 00:07:47.40\00:07:49.73 Now some people... they kind of are in two ends of the spectrum. 00:07:49.93\00:07:54.97 Some people believe 00:07:55.37\00:07:57.57 that their strict lifestyle 00:07:57.97\00:08:01.28 and their obedience to the commandments of God 00:08:01.48\00:08:05.58 are going to earn them the right to salvation. 00:08:06.11\00:08:10.32 That's a mistake. 00:08:10.72\00:08:12.05 They are forgetting what Isaiah 64:6 says. 00:08:12.15\00:08:15.96 That "all of our righteousness is as filthy rags" 00:08:16.36\00:08:20.46 before the Lord. But on the opposite end of the spectrum 00:08:20.66\00:08:25.23 we have people who mistakenly believe 00:08:25.43\00:08:29.07 that grace cancels our duty to obey God. 00:08:29.47\00:08:35.08 You know what they're forgetting? 00:08:35.28\00:08:37.01 I John 2:3-4 00:08:37.21\00:08:39.91 that says: "Now by this we know we know Him... " 00:08:40.12\00:08:43.35 and to know Him is eternal life Jesus said - 00:08:43.75\00:08:46.52 "by this we know we know Him 00:08:46.72\00:08:48.99 if we keep His commandments. 00:08:49.19\00:08:50.76 And anyone who says He knoweth Him and does not 00:08:51.16\00:08:54.10 keep His commandments is a liar 00:08:54.30\00:08:56.70 and the truth is not in him. " 00:08:56.90\00:08:58.40 So... Don't get upset with me for saying that. 00:08:59.10\00:09:02.30 That's the words of the apostle John, the apostle of love. 00:09:02.50\00:09:06.41 So both groups live apart 00:09:06.81\00:09:10.38 from a real relationship with Jesus 00:09:10.58\00:09:13.05 because they don't see the big picture 00:09:13.45\00:09:17.29 of the inseparable union of the Ten Commandments 00:09:17.49\00:09:21.32 and the progression of God's everlasting covenant. 00:09:21.72\00:09:25.49 So let's begin our journey by talking about the law. 00:09:25.89\00:09:30.77 Any time you see the words "the law" in Scripture 00:09:30.97\00:09:35.10 you have to carefully search the context. 00:09:35.30\00:09:39.41 If it says "the law and the prophets" 00:09:39.61\00:09:42.24 as a term, that's referring to all of the Old Testament. 00:09:42.44\00:09:46.15 If it says "the law of Moses, " 00:09:46.35\00:09:49.38 it is referring to the first five books 00:09:49.58\00:09:51.99 of the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, 00:09:52.19\00:09:54.79 Numbers, and Deuteronomy. 00:09:54.99\00:09:56.32 Now sometimes the moral law of God 00:09:56.59\00:09:59.86 is just referred to as "the law, " 00:10:00.06\00:10:03.23 the Ten Commandments, so you really have to look in context. 00:10:03.43\00:10:06.90 And then sometimes "the law, " the book of the law, 00:10:07.40\00:10:12.37 the law that Moses wrote, is just referred to as "the law" 00:10:12.57\00:10:18.38 and you have to look in context. 00:10:18.58\00:10:20.08 Now there is one that I want to get out of the way 00:10:20.28\00:10:23.22 right now, because there's only one other law I can think of 00:10:23.42\00:10:26.49 that is talked about in the Bible and that is Paul's famous 00:10:26.69\00:10:32.49 dissertation in Romans 7 and 8 00:10:32.69\00:10:35.20 where he talks about "the law of sin, " 00:10:35.60\00:10:39.67 "the law of sin and death. " Are you familiar with that one? 00:10:39.87\00:10:42.80 Right? A lot of people try to say 00:10:43.00\00:10:46.98 that he's talking about the Ten Commandments 00:10:47.18\00:10:49.71 when he talks about "the law of sin and death. " 00:10:49.91\00:10:52.18 In context in Romans chapter 7 00:10:52.58\00:10:56.48 he does begin... In verse 12 he is talking about 00:10:56.69\00:11:00.52 the commandments of God and that they are holy 00:11:00.72\00:11:03.53 and just and good. 00:11:03.73\00:11:05.36 But now I want to show you in verse 22- 00:11:05.56\00:11:08.13 it will be on the screen for you - 00:11:08.33\00:11:09.96 what Paul says. He says: 00:11:10.17\00:11:12.37 He is talking about the Ten Commandments. 00:11:17.57\00:11:20.18 But watch what it says: 00:11:20.38\00:11:21.81 Now in the Greek there's two words for another. 00:11:26.11\00:11:28.38 There's allos, which means one exactly the same 00:11:28.58\00:11:33.19 or another can be heteros which means something that 00:11:33.39\00:11:37.83 is different. The word here is heteros. 00:11:38.03\00:11:40.66 So he says: 00:11:40.86\00:11:42.20 That... he is juxtapositioning 00:11:57.21\00:12:01.78 two different laws: 00:12:01.98\00:12:03.32 the law of God that's written with God's finger 00:12:03.35\00:12:06.15 in his heart and in his mind 00:12:06.35\00:12:08.12 and the law of sin and death: the carnal impulses, 00:12:08.32\00:12:14.20 the carnal desires that are in his body. 00:12:14.40\00:12:17.93 So he's definitely not talking about the Ten Commandments. 00:12:18.13\00:12:22.94 It is a different law... the law of sin and death. 00:12:23.14\00:12:26.88 Now, let's talk about the moral law of God. 00:12:27.08\00:12:30.08 When you look in the Hebrew - 00:12:30.95\00:12:33.45 the moral law you understand is the Ten Commandments, right? 00:12:33.65\00:12:36.28 when you look in the Hebrew 00:12:36.48\00:12:38.39 it's aseret ha-d'varîm. 00:12:38.59\00:12:41.06 It means ten words. 00:12:41.26\00:12:43.19 If you look when it's translated into the Greek 00:12:43.39\00:12:46.49 it's Decalogue... which means ten words. 00:12:46.70\00:12:50.30 So how did it get translated into English 00:12:50.50\00:12:55.00 as Ten Commandments instead of Ten Sayings? 00:12:55.20\00:12:58.94 Well, the word arrangement does indicate 00:12:59.14\00:13:03.45 that they are commandments. 00:13:03.65\00:13:05.25 They're not suggestions... they ARE commandments. 00:13:05.45\00:13:08.42 So it's translated as the Ten Commandments. 00:13:08.62\00:13:11.95 But... they're written in future tense. 00:13:12.15\00:13:17.66 Do you know what that means? 00:13:17.86\00:13:19.69 They are promises... ten promises of God. 00:13:19.89\00:13:25.30 They are in fact 00:13:25.50\00:13:27.94 the Bill of Rights 00:13:28.14\00:13:30.84 of God's everlasting covenant. 00:13:31.04\00:13:33.84 You know how important the Bill of Rights is 00:13:34.84\00:13:37.25 to our Constitution? Well these are ten... 00:13:37.45\00:13:41.45 The Bill of Rights... the Ten Commandments... it gives us 00:13:42.22\00:13:46.52 the rights of what God - the first four - 00:13:46.72\00:13:49.99 the love that is due God - 00:13:50.19\00:13:52.09 and then the other tablet of the six 00:13:52.29\00:13:54.46 is the love that is due our neighbor. 00:13:54.66\00:13:57.37 And they were written by God on stone 00:13:57.57\00:14:01.10 to show their permanence. And where were they placed? 00:14:01.30\00:14:03.84 Inside the ark in the Most Holy Place. 00:14:04.84\00:14:09.44 Why were inside the ark? 00:14:09.84\00:14:11.85 The ark is the foundation... I mean, they are the foundation 00:14:12.05\00:14:16.65 inside the throne of God. 00:14:16.85\00:14:18.92 This is the foundation of His sovereignty... 00:14:19.12\00:14:23.16 His sovereign rule of love. 00:14:23.36\00:14:26.73 So what we're going to see today 00:14:27.13\00:14:29.50 is that the Ten Commandments were the heart 00:14:29.70\00:14:33.10 of the old covenant AND they are the heart of the new. 00:14:33.30\00:14:37.37 So let's look in Scripture at James 2 verses 10 through 12. 00:14:37.57\00:14:42.88 James begins like this: 00:14:43.28\00:14:45.25 What law is he talking about? We don't know yet, 00:14:50.32\00:14:53.12 but he tells us in the next scripture. 00:14:53.32\00:14:55.79 Is it obvious what law he's talking about? 00:15:08.34\00:15:11.21 This is the Ten Commandments. 00:15:11.81\00:15:13.54 See, the Ten Commandments are not individual. 00:15:13.94\00:15:18.65 They are like a chain link. 00:15:18.85\00:15:21.35 Any link of that chain that you break 00:15:21.55\00:15:25.12 you're guilty of breaking the moral law of God. 00:15:25.32\00:15:29.69 But look here in verse 12. 00:15:30.19\00:15:32.39 He's still talking about the Ten Commandments and he said: 00:15:32.59\00:15:36.50 He is calling the Ten Commandments 00:15:46.57\00:15:49.48 the law of liberty. 00:15:49.68\00:15:52.48 Why? He indicates that when they are written in our heart 00:15:52.68\00:15:58.15 and as we are empowered by the Holy Spirit 00:15:58.35\00:16:01.66 and we're motivated to obey Him out of love 00:16:01.86\00:16:07.46 and loyalty that we will be set free from sin. 00:16:07.66\00:16:12.57 Now, let's look at the other law: 00:16:12.97\00:16:17.41 the book of the law. 00:16:17.61\00:16:20.08 You know, when God first had the Hebrew children 00:16:20.58\00:16:26.21 after He'd delivered them and they're all around the mountain, 00:16:26.41\00:16:29.58 God was up on the mountain, He spoke the Ten Commandments. 00:16:29.78\00:16:33.39 He didn't write them yet. 00:16:33.59\00:16:34.92 He spoke them with all of His pyrotechnics. 00:16:35.09\00:16:38.56 Everybody is trembling and God was trying to show them 00:16:38.76\00:16:42.16 who He was because it had been a while. 00:16:42.36\00:16:44.87 They really didn't know Him all that well. 00:16:45.07\00:16:47.70 So He spoke those. Then He had Moses come up the mountain 00:16:48.60\00:16:52.77 and He gave Moses civil laws, 00:16:52.97\00:16:56.54 ceremonial laws, 00:16:56.75\00:16:58.81 and, of course, reinforcing the Ten Commandments 00:16:59.01\00:17:02.98 the rights. So Moses comes down from the mountain. 00:17:03.18\00:17:06.55 He speaks this to the people 00:17:06.76\00:17:09.36 because the people really most of them couldn't read or write. 00:17:09.56\00:17:12.43 So he speaks all of these civil laws, 00:17:12.63\00:17:16.03 the ceremonial laws, and re- iterates the Ten Commandments. 00:17:16.23\00:17:20.34 And the people then say: "Yes. " 00:17:20.64\00:17:24.77 So Moses writes them in a book 00:17:24.97\00:17:27.71 and then he builds an altar. 00:17:27.91\00:17:30.95 He has sacrifices prepared 00:17:31.15\00:17:32.81 and look at Exodus 24:7-8. 00:17:33.01\00:17:38.59 This is what Moses had just written. 00:17:42.66\00:17:45.76 The civil, the ceremonial, AND the Ten Commandments 00:17:45.96\00:17:49.80 were included in that as the Bill of Rights. 00:17:50.00\00:17:52.83 In Hebrews it says he sprinkled it on the book as well. 00:18:06.61\00:18:10.09 What is he doing? He is ratifying the covenant. 00:18:10.29\00:18:14.49 And he says: "This is the blood of the covenant. " 00:18:14.69\00:18:17.93 What is the covenant? It is written in the book. 00:18:18.13\00:18:21.00 It is the ceremonial, civil laws that also includes 00:18:21.20\00:18:26.37 the Ten Commandments at the heart of it. 00:18:26.57\00:18:28.34 Now 39 years later 00:18:34.54\00:18:37.18 they're coming to the end of their journey 00:18:38.81\00:18:40.72 and Moses repeats and reinforces 00:18:41.12\00:18:46.15 this book of the covenant. 00:18:46.35\00:18:47.82 He writes it down, and now it is referred to 00:18:48.22\00:18:52.33 as the book of the law. 00:18:52.53\00:18:54.76 Five times it's referred to as Moses' law. 00:18:54.96\00:18:57.80 This is the book of Deuteronomy. 00:18:58.00\00:19:00.84 Deuteronomy means second law... 00:19:01.04\00:19:03.71 the second giving of the law. 00:19:03.91\00:19:06.07 And by the way, this won't means as much to you now 00:19:06.64\00:19:09.24 but I'm going to plant this seed. 00:19:09.44\00:19:10.98 In the book of Deuteronomy... 00:19:11.38\00:19:13.65 God's covenant with Abraham is mentioned seven times 00:19:15.98\00:19:21.42 in the book of Deuteronomy. 00:19:22.36\00:19:24.33 So, look at Deuteronomy 31:26. He says: 00:19:24.79\00:19:29.63 Where are the Ten Commandments? 00:19:42.38\00:19:44.55 They're inside the ark. 00:19:44.95\00:19:46.95 They're permanent... they're inside. 00:19:47.98\00:19:49.82 God's sitting on His throne; they're inside the ark. 00:19:50.02\00:19:53.25 They're the Bill of Rights, the foundation of His government, 00:19:53.46\00:19:56.39 and the mercy seat is covering it 00:19:56.79\00:19:58.99 because mercy always trumps justice. 00:19:59.19\00:20:02.46 Hoo-hoo! But now 00:20:02.66\00:20:05.63 what does he do with the book of the law 00:20:06.03\00:20:08.54 which is the old covenant? He puts it in a side pocket 00:20:08.74\00:20:12.37 and it's going to be there as a witness against them. 00:20:12.57\00:20:16.21 Why is it a witness against them? 00:20:16.41\00:20:18.35 Because it contained not only the blessing 00:20:18.55\00:20:23.12 if they kept the covenant 00:20:23.32\00:20:24.95 but all of the curses if they did not keep the covenant. 00:20:25.15\00:20:30.79 Now many people confuse 00:20:31.46\00:20:35.13 which law Paul is referring to in Galatians. 00:20:35.33\00:20:38.83 You know, he talks about the law that was a tutor to bring us 00:20:39.57\00:20:42.60 to Christ. He says, in fact, in Galatians 5:18 00:20:42.80\00:20:46.78 "If you're led by the Spirit, you're not under the law. " 00:20:46.98\00:20:49.98 And a lot of people say: 00:20:50.18\00:20:51.55 "See? We don't have to keep the Ten Commandments. " 00:20:51.75\00:20:54.08 Remember, any time you see "the law" you have to look 00:20:54.62\00:20:58.19 in context. Galatians was written... 00:20:58.39\00:21:03.12 this letter was written because Judaizers were coming in 00:21:03.89\00:21:07.66 to Galatia trying to tell these new covenant Christians 00:21:07.86\00:21:12.17 "Oh, no... you've got to keep the old covenant. " 00:21:12.37\00:21:14.90 And it's only six short chapters in this little letter. 00:21:15.97\00:21:21.58 And right in the middle of the book 00:21:21.78\00:21:25.08 Paul identifies what law he is referring to. 00:21:25.48\00:21:28.55 Galatians 3:10 says: 00:21:28.75\00:21:31.32 This is a direct quote from the book of the law. 00:21:51.77\00:21:55.48 From the old covenant. This is Deuteronomy 27:26. 00:21:55.68\00:22:00.05 So Paul is talking about the old covenant 00:22:00.45\00:22:04.65 was the tutor to bring them to Christ, 00:22:04.85\00:22:07.76 to make them understand what God was going to do. 00:22:07.96\00:22:11.89 And then to understand how much they needed a Savior. 00:22:12.53\00:22:17.37 In the old covenant in the book of the law 00:22:18.00\00:22:22.34 there were ceremonial laws, festivals, annual Sabbath 00:22:22.54\00:22:26.81 days, food and drink offerings, 00:22:27.01\00:22:29.48 and symbolic sacrificial remedies for sin. 00:22:29.68\00:22:34.18 This was to lead the people to Jesus Christ. 00:22:34.88\00:22:39.19 But these Judaizers came in and they told the Galatians: 00:22:39.85\00:22:43.93 "Ah, no, you've gotta keep the feasts; you've gotta do 00:22:44.13\00:22:46.23 this; you've gotta do that. " 00:22:46.43\00:22:47.76 And listen to what Paul says in Galatians 5:4. 00:22:47.83\00:22:50.57 "You have become estranged from Christ. " 00:22:50.77\00:22:55.60 "You who attempt to be justified by law, you have 00:22:55.80\00:23:00.18 fallen from grace. " 00:23:00.38\00:23:03.31 So the old covenant... we want to... You know, I grew up... 00:23:03.51\00:23:06.51 I was taught the old covenant was nailed to the cross. 00:23:06.72\00:23:09.85 Man, I'd bite ya. 00:23:10.59\00:23:12.19 I'd tell you "No, you don't have to keep the 10 Commandments. 00:23:12.39\00:23:15.32 It was nailed to the cross. " 00:23:15.52\00:23:17.16 I didn't know the difference in these laws. 00:23:17.36\00:23:20.50 But Colossians 2:14 is where many get that mistaken idea. 00:23:21.40\00:23:26.97 And let's look at that right now 00:23:27.80\00:23:30.27 because it is clear what law he is referring to. 00:23:30.67\00:23:35.04 Colossians 2:14 says: 00:23:35.58\00:23:37.25 That ought to be a hint. There's something that was a witness 00:23:45.02\00:23:49.72 on the side of the ark... a witness against you. 00:23:49.92\00:23:53.73 So... Now any time you see the word so 00:24:06.34\00:24:10.58 in Scripture it's a purpose statement. 00:24:10.78\00:24:13.08 It means for this reason. 00:24:13.78\00:24:15.68 So Paul is saying: "Because this was nailed to the cross 00:24:16.08\00:24:21.02 for this very purpose don't let anyone 00:24:21.22\00:24:25.46 judge you in food or in drink 00:24:25.66\00:24:27.96 or regarding a festival or a new moon or Sabbath. " 00:24:28.16\00:24:32.70 What's he talking about here? 00:24:33.10\00:24:35.20 The food and drink offerings. 00:24:35.74\00:24:38.01 The festival ceremonial Sabbaths. 00:24:38.21\00:24:42.81 "Because, " he says... he's certainly talking about the book 00:24:43.21\00:24:47.45 of the law... "because, " he says "they were a shadow... " 00:24:47.65\00:24:51.49 All of these things - the ceremonial law - 00:24:57.49\00:25:00.40 pointed to Jesus Christ and it ended at the cross. 00:25:00.60\00:25:05.37 So the big picture... What's the big picture? 00:25:05.77\00:25:09.47 It's obvious the old covenant ended at the cross. 00:25:10.31\00:25:14.51 It was nailed to the cross, but the Ten Commandments 00:25:14.71\00:25:18.51 that are inside God's ark - His Bill of Rights - 00:25:18.71\00:25:23.15 remain as the foundation. 00:25:23.35\00:25:24.69 And so now let's look at righteousness. 00:25:24.82\00:25:26.55 We've seen what law is; let's talk about righteousness. 00:25:26.76\00:25:29.39 Righteousness is more than just right doing or right being. 00:25:29.79\00:25:33.70 Righteousness is right standing with God. 00:25:34.20\00:25:36.73 There's only One that has ever walked the face of the earth 00:25:37.13\00:25:40.70 that was righteous, so you can say righteousness 00:25:40.90\00:25:43.14 is a person. It was God in the person of Jesus Christ. 00:25:43.34\00:25:47.88 So our only hope at achieving righteousness 00:25:48.28\00:25:52.15 is to have a relationship with Him 00:25:52.35\00:25:54.42 and receive His righteousness by faith. 00:25:54.62\00:25:57.89 And it comes in two ways. 00:25:58.29\00:26:00.36 First, imputed righteousness. 00:26:01.09\00:26:03.32 And imputed simply means it's credited to our account. 00:26:04.03\00:26:08.16 His perfect moral character, 00:26:08.76\00:26:11.20 His perfect obedience to all of God's commandments, 00:26:11.40\00:26:14.50 is credited to us. 00:26:14.70\00:26:16.84 And you know what? This is like a courtroom 00:26:17.04\00:26:19.67 scene if you will. This is justification. 00:26:19.87\00:26:22.68 When the imputed righteousness II Corinthians 5:21 says: 00:26:23.08\00:26:27.42 "God made Jesus, who knew no sin, to be sin for us 00:26:27.72\00:26:32.29 that we might become the righteousness of God 00:26:32.49\00:26:34.49 in Christ Jesus. " 00:26:34.69\00:26:36.22 So what he's saying is 00:26:36.42\00:26:39.86 the blood Jesus blots out our sins. 00:26:40.06\00:26:43.97 There is no more forensic evidence. 00:26:44.17\00:26:46.84 We are acquitted; we are declared pardoned. 00:26:47.04\00:26:52.47 We're declared righteous. 00:26:52.87\00:26:55.58 But let me tell you something: God wants to do more 00:26:55.98\00:26:59.21 than just cover your past sins. 00:26:59.41\00:27:01.28 He wants to make you righteous. 00:27:01.48\00:27:04.25 He wants to pour His righteousness into you. 00:27:04.75\00:27:08.26 And implied in the New Testament is imparted righteousness. 00:27:08.46\00:27:13.09 Imparted righteousness is when Christ lives in your heart 00:27:13.90\00:27:18.37 by faith. That's what Ephesians 3:17 says. 00:27:18.57\00:27:21.60 By the power of the Holy Spirit He's living in your hearts 00:27:21.80\00:27:26.04 by faith, and Paul said in Philippians 2:13 00:27:26.24\00:27:31.18 "God works in you to will 00:27:31.58\00:27:34.38 and to do His good pleasure. " 00:27:34.58\00:27:36.89 Let me tell you something: you can't achieve righteousness 00:27:37.59\00:27:40.42 on your own. You can't obey on your own. 00:27:40.62\00:27:43.09 Apart from Jesus Christ you can do nothing 00:27:43.39\00:27:47.00 but with Him you can do all things. 00:27:47.20\00:27:50.00 So He empowers us by His Spirit 00:27:50.40\00:27:53.67 to walk in obedience as an expression of our love for Him. 00:27:54.17\00:28:00.11 So the big picture? 00:28:00.31\00:28:02.51 Righteousness by faith is the only kind of righteousness 00:28:02.91\00:28:06.21 there is. Now let's talk about sin. What is sin? 00:28:06.41\00:28:09.75 Sin is the opposite of righteousness. 00:28:10.45\00:28:12.15 It's wrong doing; wrong being; wrong standing. 00:28:12.35\00:28:14.66 Sin originated from pride and self-seeking. 00:28:14.86\00:28:20.06 And any time pride and self-seeking enters the picture 00:28:20.46\00:28:24.70 it leads us away from God. 00:28:24.90\00:28:26.80 And to live apart from God 00:28:27.00\00:28:29.24 is the downfall of any created being. 00:28:30.04\00:28:33.07 Here we've got Lucifer! God created this perfect 00:28:33.48\00:28:37.68 angel, and pride and self- seeking arose in his heart. 00:28:37.88\00:28:43.15 What happened? He became a devil! 00:28:43.35\00:28:46.52 Now when in the garden 00:28:47.42\00:28:51.89 Lucifer was speaking through the serpent to Eve 00:28:52.19\00:28:57.33 guess what happened? 00:28:57.53\00:28:58.87 He planted doubt in her mind. 00:28:58.93\00:29:01.14 He said: "Hey, God's holding back something good from you. " 00:29:01.54\00:29:04.41 See, Lucifer wanted to live by self-determination. 00:29:04.81\00:29:08.08 He accused God of being unfair for deciding 00:29:08.28\00:29:11.21 what's right and what's wrong. 00:29:11.41\00:29:13.15 And here He told Adam and Eve: "Don't eat 00:29:13.82\00:29:16.69 from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. " 00:29:16.89\00:29:19.29 It's not up to you to decide what's good for you. 00:29:19.49\00:29:22.39 It's not up to you to decide what's bad for you. 00:29:22.79\00:29:25.46 That's God's sovereignty. 00:29:25.66\00:29:27.86 So Eve... a little pride sets in. 00:29:28.26\00:29:32.87 And guess what happens. 00:29:33.70\00:29:35.97 She, then, has this desire for self-determination. 00:29:36.50\00:29:41.88 "I'll decide what's good for me. " 00:29:42.28\00:29:44.61 And she took of the fruit and she ate it. 00:29:45.01\00:29:47.22 And she gave it to Adam; he followed suit. 00:29:47.42\00:29:50.49 And they fractured the relationship with God. 00:29:50.69\00:29:53.82 The essence of sin is unbelief. 00:29:54.02\00:29:56.29 In Romans 12 Paul says that whatever is not from faith 00:29:56.49\00:30:01.16 is sin. And when unbelief enters 00:30:01.36\00:30:05.97 guess what? It creates actions that are 00:30:06.17\00:30:10.67 contrary to God's will. 00:30:10.87\00:30:12.77 Contrary to God's law. 00:30:12.97\00:30:14.78 I John 3:4 says: "Whoever commits sin 00:30:14.98\00:30:17.48 also commits lawlessness. " Sin IS lawlessness! 00:30:17.68\00:30:23.39 EVERY sin is done against the will of God. 00:30:23.59\00:30:27.22 So sin is a transgression, a violation of God's law. 00:30:28.06\00:30:33.43 Do you see the big picture 00:30:33.63\00:30:35.86 of the law of God - His perfect law? 00:30:36.06\00:30:40.14 And if you are walking in obedience 00:30:40.34\00:30:43.87 because of Christ's righteousness, you're lined up 00:30:44.07\00:30:46.21 with this law. But guess what? 00:30:46.41\00:30:48.48 If you separate yourself from Christ, 00:30:48.68\00:30:51.15 living apart from God you're sinning. 00:30:51.55\00:30:53.72 And so that's the connection. 00:30:54.48\00:30:56.35 Now let's look... 'cause here's the fun part. 00:30:56.55\00:30:59.09 Let's look at gospel covenant and seed. 00:30:59.49\00:31:03.99 Gospel covenant and seed. 00:31:04.39\00:31:06.23 Gospel's simple. It simply means the good news. 00:31:06.43\00:31:09.26 Good news of what? The good news of salvation by 00:31:09.46\00:31:11.90 grace through faith in Christ Jesus. 00:31:12.10\00:31:14.54 Covenant takes a little bit more to explain. 00:31:14.74\00:31:17.31 In the Hebrew covenant is berit, B-E-R-I-T. 00:31:17.71\00:31:21.78 It's used 280 times in the Old Testament. 00:31:21.98\00:31:24.71 And about ten times it's talking about covenants between 00:31:25.11\00:31:28.82 a man to a man. But the rest of the time 00:31:29.58\00:31:32.42 it's referring about God's promises to His people. 00:31:32.62\00:31:35.56 Berit means to obligate, to bind. 00:31:35.76\00:31:40.10 Now in the Greek 00:31:40.43\00:31:43.90 there are two words for covenant. 00:31:44.73\00:31:46.53 You don't need to remember these words. 00:31:46.74\00:31:48.34 We're just getting the big picture here. 00:31:48.54\00:31:50.07 Just remember the principle. 00:31:50.47\00:31:52.14 But there's two words for covenant in the Greek. 00:31:52.34\00:31:55.51 There is diatheke... and this implies equality 00:31:55.71\00:32:00.22 among people like they're creating a contract 00:32:00.42\00:32:04.02 or they're creating a treaty or something like this. 00:32:04.22\00:32:07.76 A partnership... that's diatheke. 00:32:08.16\00:32:11.96 But then there's this beautiful word called suntheke, 00:32:12.36\00:32:15.36 and that's the kind of covenant that is a will 00:32:15.76\00:32:19.13 or a testament 00:32:19.53\00:32:21.07 where there is only one who is making all of the promises. 00:32:21.27\00:32:25.77 And then if anybody wants to enter in unto that covenant 00:32:26.17\00:32:30.18 they're agreeing that the one who makes all the promises 00:32:30.38\00:32:33.28 sets the terms and the people who enter in say "Yes, 00:32:33.48\00:32:36.85 I'll abide by your terms. " 00:32:37.05\00:32:38.42 Guess what? The reason I'm telling you this 00:32:39.32\00:32:42.06 when the Old Testament 00:32:43.89\00:32:47.66 was translated into Greek 00:32:47.86\00:32:49.80 there were 70 Jewish scholars 00:32:50.00\00:32:53.23 who did the translation of the five books of Moses. 00:32:53.64\00:32:56.71 Two hundred and eighty times - 00:32:56.91\00:33:00.28 or two hundred and seventy times - 00:33:00.48\00:33:02.28 they used the word... and I think I said it to you wrong... 00:33:02.48\00:33:07.35 suntheke is when you're together, 00:33:07.55\00:33:09.08 diatheke is when it's one person. 00:33:09.28\00:33:13.66 Two hundred and seventy times 00:33:14.06\00:33:16.39 they used diatheke. 00:33:16.59\00:33:18.49 They are saying all of God's covenants 00:33:18.89\00:33:22.80 are... God alone is making the promises. 00:33:24.07\00:33:28.37 Boy, I did mess that up, didn't I? 00:33:29.27\00:33:31.37 But all of God's promises are diatheke 00:33:32.67\00:33:37.08 not suntheke... is where two or more are working together 00:33:37.28\00:33:40.58 as a contract. All of God's promises are His will, 00:33:40.78\00:33:44.35 His testament. And that is important because... 00:33:44.55\00:33:48.39 It's significant because it's not the way most people 00:33:48.59\00:33:50.93 see the old covenant. 00:33:51.13\00:33:52.46 In the original writing of the New Testament 00:33:52.49\00:33:56.36 it's in Greek, and that, too, always - whether it's the old 00:33:56.56\00:34:01.47 covenant or the new covenant - 00:34:01.67\00:34:03.00 refers to God's covenants as diatheke. 00:34:03.20\00:34:06.17 God alone is making the promises. 00:34:06.37\00:34:10.95 So the big picture is God's covenant is an invitation 00:34:11.65\00:34:16.75 to you to share a wholehearted relationship with Him. 00:34:16.95\00:34:21.96 He says: "I will be your God; you will be My people. " 00:34:22.36\00:34:26.43 And He promises His benevolence; He promises His protection 00:34:26.63\00:34:31.00 in exchange for the way of love. 00:34:31.20\00:34:34.17 Now, Revelation 14 and verse 6. 00:34:34.37\00:34:38.17 This is a very familiar scripture. 00:34:38.37\00:34:40.48 It's the beginning of the three angels' messages. 00:34:40.68\00:34:43.08 And it says: 00:34:43.28\00:34:44.61 Everlasting. The word in the Greek is aiónios 00:34:58.46\00:35:02.60 and that means eternal. 00:35:03.00\00:35:05.13 But now get this: it's a relative term. 00:35:05.90\00:35:09.37 If it's describing mortal humanity or perishable things, 00:35:09.57\00:35:14.41 it means just as long as that thing exists. 00:35:14.81\00:35:17.58 For example, when Jude 7 says 00:35:17.78\00:35:21.95 that Sodom and Gomorrah were set forth as an example 00:35:22.15\00:35:25.19 of eternal fire are they still on fire today? 00:35:25.39\00:35:28.32 No... it was as long as that thing existed. 00:35:28.72\00:35:30.83 But when it's referring to the Lord who Paul says 00:35:31.03\00:35:34.00 in I Timothy 6 "alone is immortal" 00:35:34.20\00:35:36.77 then everlasting means past, present, and future. 00:35:37.17\00:35:41.50 So here is my question: 00:35:41.70\00:35:43.97 if you had to explain... 00:35:44.67\00:35:47.11 Think about this. Give me your full attention. 00:35:47.31\00:35:49.78 If you had to explain 00:35:50.28\00:35:53.01 to someone what is the everlasting gospel 00:35:53.21\00:35:58.29 and use only one scripture, 00:35:59.05\00:36:00.89 what would you choose? 00:36:01.19\00:36:02.89 What scripture would you choose? 00:36:03.83\00:36:06.13 Actually, we don't have to worry about it. 00:36:06.33\00:36:08.66 John introduced it in the previous chapter 00:36:08.86\00:36:12.23 in Revelation 13:8 in the context of the Book of Life. 00:36:12.43\00:36:17.37 THIS is the everlasting gospel. 00:36:22.41\00:36:25.98 "The Lamb who was slain from the foundation of the world" 00:36:26.18\00:36:31.12 is an obvious reference to God's Calvary plan, 00:36:31.32\00:36:35.46 the death of Christ, the spotless Lamb of God. 00:36:35.66\00:36:38.66 And with perfect omniscience the all-knowing Godhead 00:36:39.06\00:36:42.80 looked into the future 00:36:43.00\00:36:45.10 and pre-determined the Calvary plan 00:36:45.30\00:36:47.64 before the foundation of the world. 00:36:47.94\00:36:50.44 And don't be fooled. It was God who came down 00:36:51.27\00:36:55.74 to earth. And in Philippians 2:6 Paul said: 00:36:55.94\00:36:59.65 "He humbled Himself; He took on our flesh. " 00:36:59.85\00:37:03.82 And then He humbled Himself even further to die 00:37:04.02\00:37:07.46 on the cross for us. 00:37:07.66\00:37:09.72 So your ransom price was determined in eternity past. 00:37:10.13\00:37:15.63 Hallelujah! 00:37:16.23\00:37:17.57 So Hebrews 13:20-21 helps prove this point. 00:37:17.90\00:37:22.24 He said: 00:37:22.94\00:37:24.27 The everlasting covenant - the eternal covenant - 00:37:38.59\00:37:42.66 God planned His will, His testament, in eternity. 00:37:42.86\00:37:47.03 And He promised and obligated Himself 00:37:47.23\00:37:50.60 to ratify the eternal covenant 00:37:51.00\00:37:55.20 of redemption with His own blood. 00:37:55.40\00:37:58.04 So why did He have to die? 00:37:58.24\00:38:00.14 Well the Bible says: "All have sinned 00:38:00.81\00:38:03.04 and fallen short of the glory of God. " 00:38:03.24\00:38:04.95 We are spiritual slaves to sin. 00:38:05.15\00:38:07.98 And what is the penalty for sin? 00:38:08.18\00:38:10.22 Death! So He had to come down to redeem us 00:38:10.72\00:38:14.86 from Satan's slave market. 00:38:15.06\00:38:17.89 And you know, here's something He did: 00:38:18.29\00:38:21.23 He didn't just redeem us. 00:38:21.43\00:38:23.06 He actually revealed God's justice. 00:38:23.47\00:38:26.90 God couldn't just say: "Oh, you broke My law. 00:38:27.30\00:38:30.24 Oh well, forget about it. " 00:38:30.44\00:38:32.57 No, the justice of God demanded that the penalty be paid. 00:38:33.04\00:38:36.44 And Jesus paid it for us to show the mercy. 00:38:37.08\00:38:40.35 So if the breaking of... the penalty for breaking the law 00:38:40.55\00:38:45.49 and the substitute for paying the penalty 00:38:45.69\00:38:48.76 were determined in eternity past, 00:38:48.96\00:38:51.59 what does that tell us about the unchanging nature of the law 00:38:51.99\00:38:55.40 of God? 00:38:55.60\00:38:56.93 OK... Christ IS the covenant. 00:38:57.30\00:39:01.90 Look at Isaiah 42:6-7. 00:39:02.74\00:39:05.94 This is the Lord speaking, and this is a Messianic prophecy. 00:39:07.38\00:39:11.31 He says: "I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness. " 00:39:11.51\00:39:15.18 You know, even in the Old Testament, 00:39:31.67\00:39:34.14 the prophet Jeremiah, one of the titles for the Messiah 00:39:34.34\00:39:38.47 was The Lord Our Righteousness. 00:39:38.67\00:39:41.78 So the big picture is this: 00:39:41.98\00:39:44.81 The everlasting gospel is the everlasting covenant 00:39:45.01\00:39:49.72 of redemption in Christ and righteousness by faith. 00:39:49.92\00:39:53.59 The glory of the covenant is God's wholehearted 00:39:53.99\00:39:58.13 self-sacrificing love. 00:39:58.33\00:40:01.26 And His purpose? He wanted to be our God 00:40:01.46\00:40:04.00 and let us be His people. 00:40:04.40\00:40:05.80 And I have to say this: do not think for one second 00:40:06.67\00:40:10.31 that grace is a New Testament concept. 00:40:10.71\00:40:14.31 In the Old Testament there's a word that far surpasses grace. 00:40:14.71\00:40:19.45 It is heset - H-E-S-E-T. 00:40:19.85\00:40:23.08 And you can't translate it with one word into English. 00:40:23.28\00:40:26.55 You know what it means? 00:40:26.76\00:40:28.09 It means the total commitment of God's love. 00:40:28.19\00:40:31.73 His covenant faithfulness. His grace; His mercy. 00:40:31.93\00:40:35.13 His lovingkindness and His loyalty. 00:40:35.53\00:40:38.57 God's nature is unchanging 00:40:39.27\00:40:44.07 and the truth is eternal. 00:40:44.64\00:40:47.48 The eternal truth is as unchanging as God Himself. 00:40:47.64\00:40:53.11 So God's means of salvation has always and only been 00:40:53.31\00:40:57.99 salvation by grace through faith. 00:40:58.55\00:41:00.56 The entire Bible - Genesis to Revelation - 00:41:00.76\00:41:03.56 is the progressive unfolding of God's covenant. 00:41:03.76\00:41:08.60 His eternal covenant. 00:41:08.80\00:41:11.00 Christ is found on every page of the Bible. 00:41:11.20\00:41:14.37 The shadows and the types of the Messiah 00:41:14.77\00:41:18.44 fill the Old Testament. 00:41:18.64\00:41:20.28 And the New Testament simply continues the covenant narrative 00:41:20.48\00:41:25.68 that was initiated by the prophets of old. 00:41:25.88\00:41:29.08 See, Jesus came to fulfill all of God's promises. 00:41:29.28\00:41:33.46 II Corinthians 1:20 says 00:41:33.66\00:41:37.46 that all of the promises of God in Jesus Christ 00:41:37.66\00:41:41.36 are yes and amen. 00:41:41.56\00:41:43.37 So are the dots connected between the gospel and the 00:41:43.57\00:41:47.74 covenant? Does that make sense? 00:41:47.94\00:41:49.70 Now very briefly... Oh! I've got to hurry. 00:41:50.11\00:41:52.24 Let's look at the seed because 00:41:52.64\00:41:57.08 the seed... if we want to see 00:41:57.28\00:42:01.78 how the covenants progress... 00:42:01.98\00:42:05.15 it's in the story of the seed. 00:42:05.35\00:42:07.92 A definition for seed is something that is sown. 00:42:08.32\00:42:11.89 Could be physical seed or spiritual seed. 00:42:12.09\00:42:14.30 By implication it means parentage. 00:42:14.50\00:42:17.60 So God sowed His spiritual seed in Adam. 00:42:17.80\00:42:20.87 Adam was the first of a kind. 00:42:21.07\00:42:22.70 He created him in His image. 00:42:22.90\00:42:24.47 And guess what? Adam was called the son of God. 00:42:25.04\00:42:27.84 Luke 3:38 says "Adam, the son of God. " 00:42:28.61\00:42:33.15 It's a covenant term. 00:42:33.35\00:42:34.68 So when Adam was appointed as head of the human race 00:42:35.02\00:42:41.02 he forfeited his position to Satan at the fall 00:42:41.22\00:42:45.86 and then God set His covenant into motion. 00:42:46.26\00:42:49.20 Genesis 3:15, speaking to the serpent He says: 00:42:49.40\00:42:54.57 Whoo! "Between your seed" implies parentage of the devil. 00:43:01.01\00:43:05.88 Remember when Jesus told the Pharisees: "You're of your 00:43:06.08\00:43:08.18 Father the devil? " He said: 00:43:08.38\00:43:10.89 So now the everlasting covenant is going to be woven through 00:43:15.76\00:43:19.39 Scripture through the story of the seed. 00:43:19.59\00:43:23.83 If you follow the seed in that story, 00:43:24.03\00:43:26.94 a Child was to be born to the human race 00:43:27.14\00:43:29.44 who would reverse the fall. 00:43:29.84\00:43:32.27 Take Adam's place; crush the head of Satan. 00:43:32.47\00:43:36.31 And then we know in Genesis 15 00:43:36.71\00:43:41.72 the story of the seed is developed a little further. 00:43:41.92\00:43:45.32 God tells Abraham: 00:43:45.72\00:43:47.26 "Hey, you're going to have a child. 00:43:47.46\00:43:50.96 You're going to be the father of many nations. 00:43:51.16\00:43:53.60 Through your seed all the nations will be blessed. " 00:43:53.80\00:43:57.73 Adam and Eve... those promises were to be fulfilled 00:43:58.50\00:44:03.14 in the seed of Abraham and Sarah. 00:44:03.34\00:44:06.47 And look... You know, Abraham was past 00:44:06.88\00:44:10.05 both of them past childbearing age. 00:44:10.25\00:44:12.71 But look at his response. 00:44:12.91\00:44:16.72 Abraham had such trust in God... in the love of God, 00:44:16.92\00:44:21.36 in the power of God. Look at his response: Genesis 15:6. 00:44:21.56\00:44:25.33 So righteousness by faith was covenanted by God 00:44:31.77\00:44:37.11 right here in Genesis 15. 00:44:37.31\00:44:39.67 God has Abraham prepare the sacrifices. 00:44:40.28\00:44:43.31 But before the solemn confirmation guess what happens. 00:44:43.71\00:44:47.75 God puts Abraham into a deep sleep 00:44:48.22\00:44:51.42 and only God passes through the divided carcasses 00:44:51.62\00:44:57.23 basically saying "berit. " "This is My covenant. " 00:44:57.43\00:45:01.80 And He didn't have Abraham pass through; 00:45:02.00\00:45:04.13 God alone passed through 00:45:04.33\00:45:06.00 to say He is the One who is making the promises. 00:45:06.20\00:45:11.07 So this is... I'll tell you: this is my personal belief. 00:45:11.47\00:45:14.18 I believe it is this time 00:45:14.81\00:45:18.21 when God showed Abraham Christ's day. 00:45:18.41\00:45:22.35 Remember in John chapter 8 Jesus said: "Your father Abraham 00:45:22.55\00:45:27.46 rejoiced to see My day. He saw it and was glad. " 00:45:27.66\00:45:31.56 What day is he talking about? 00:45:31.76\00:45:33.36 He's talking about the day of Christ's death 00:45:33.76\00:45:37.60 and resurrection. 00:45:37.80\00:45:39.27 And let me show you why I believe this is when 00:45:39.47\00:45:43.37 Abraham... Paul say: "The gospel was preached to Abraham 00:45:43.57\00:45:48.81 in advance. " Hebrews 11:17-19. It says: 00:45:49.01\00:45:54.45 Hit the pause button. 00:46:03.59\00:46:04.99 Was Isaac his only begotten son? 00:46:05.49\00:46:07.50 He was the second of eight sons, right? 00:46:07.66\00:46:10.87 But that is a covenant term 00:46:11.07\00:46:13.34 and it's a unique son of promise. But look what he said: 00:46:13.54\00:46:17.21 Abraham had seen Christ's day. 00:46:32.22\00:46:34.76 He knew that God was going to send His Son. 00:46:34.96\00:46:37.89 He would be crucified, die, and be resurrected. 00:46:38.09\00:46:40.83 So when He asks him to sacrifice Isaac 00:46:41.03\00:46:44.50 he concludes: "OK, Lord... 00:46:44.70\00:46:46.67 You've shown me what You're going to do to Your Son. 00:46:46.87\00:46:48.74 I can sacrifice my son 00:46:49.14\00:46:51.94 because You'll be able to raise him up. " 00:46:52.14\00:46:54.88 So Genesis 22:18 says that in his seed... 00:46:55.54\00:47:00.58 God's speaking to Abraham. 00:47:00.78\00:47:02.18 "In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed 00:47:02.38\00:47:05.65 because you have obeyed My voice. " 00:47:06.05\00:47:08.16 See, obedience is covenant faithfulness. 00:47:08.36\00:47:11.63 Galatians 3:16 says: 00:47:12.39\00:47:14.56 Now, we're just running out of time. 00:47:29.61\00:47:34.32 God renewed His covenant with Abraham's son Isaac. 00:47:34.98\00:47:38.65 And in Genesis 26 the reason He says He did 00:47:38.85\00:47:44.76 is because Abraham obeyed 00:47:44.96\00:47:49.36 His commandments, His statues, and His laws. 00:47:49.56\00:47:53.34 So we see that obedience and righteousness by faith 00:47:53.54\00:47:58.17 go hand in hand. Then God renewed the covenant 00:47:58.37\00:48:02.44 with Isaac's son Jacob. Remember when Jacob 00:48:02.64\00:48:05.75 saw the ladder? Had the dream of the ladder? 00:48:05.95\00:48:08.52 God said: "In your seed will all the nations be blessed. " 00:48:08.92\00:48:14.12 And this is why He's called the God of Abraham, 00:48:14.52\00:48:16.93 the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. 00:48:17.13\00:48:18.99 But you'll also see it written "The God of Abraham, 00:48:19.19\00:48:22.23 the God of Jacob, the God of Israel. " 00:48:22.43\00:48:24.53 Because when Jacob wrestled with the Lord 00:48:24.73\00:48:27.97 God gave him a new spiritual name: Israel. 00:48:28.37\00:48:32.17 And then his twelve sons 00:48:32.57\00:48:35.11 fathered the nation of Israel 00:48:35.31\00:48:36.64 And if we don't do anything else I've gotta show you this. 00:48:36.71\00:48:39.55 The nation of Israel became slaves in Egypt. 00:48:42.05\00:48:46.82 Four hundred years they're oppressed. 00:48:47.76\00:48:49.69 And when they cry out to God for deliverance 00:48:50.09\00:48:52.89 God shared the same covenant relationship with them 00:48:53.29\00:48:57.70 that He did with Abraham. 00:48:57.90\00:49:00.14 Let's look. I've got four scriptures to prove that. 00:49:00.84\00:49:04.31 Exodus 2:24: "God heard their groaning 00:49:04.51\00:49:08.14 and God remembered... " What? 00:49:08.34\00:49:11.05 Now skip forward to Exodus 4:22. 00:49:15.85\00:49:19.35 God's sending Moses to Pharaoh and He says: 00:49:19.55\00:49:22.99 You know what that means? 00:49:32.33\00:49:33.67 The nation of Israel certainly wasn't the first nation. 00:49:33.90\00:49:36.81 It's a covenant term. Firstborn is not priority 00:49:37.01\00:49:41.61 of your birth positioning. 00:49:41.81\00:49:45.11 It means that it's a rank. It's priority as far as 00:49:45.51\00:49:50.79 your possession of the inheritance and leadership. 00:49:50.99\00:49:55.06 Look at Exodus 6 and verse 5. God says: 00:49:55.26\00:50:00.83 What covenant? With Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob! 00:50:09.17\00:50:12.14 "Therefore... " Any time you see therefore 00:50:13.01\00:50:15.48 it's a bridge. He's taking that thought: 00:50:15.68\00:50:19.11 God remembered His covenant... " 00:50:19.31\00:50:20.72 This is a progressive unfolding of the continuation 00:50:38.20\00:50:42.27 of the covenant of grace, and God graciously delivered them. 00:50:42.47\00:50:46.51 He saved them before they mea- sured up to His moral standard. 00:50:46.71\00:50:51.28 That was not a pre- condition for their salvation. 00:50:51.68\00:50:54.78 He delivered them through the Red Sea, 00:50:55.08\00:50:57.32 brought them to Mt. Sinai. 00:50:57.52\00:50:59.89 And they were to be His covenant people 00:51:00.09\00:51:02.66 and enjoy the blessings of the covenant with Abraham: 00:51:02.86\00:51:06.76 that covenant of grace. 00:51:06.96\00:51:08.36 Look at Exodus 19 just before God speaks the Ten Commandments. 00:51:08.76\00:51:12.70 He says: 00:51:12.90\00:51:14.24 Boy, that is covenant love language. 00:51:20.64\00:51:23.11 God is saying: "I'm your Redeemer. You are mine! " 00:51:23.31\00:51:28.68 And He says: "If you will indeed obey My voice... " 00:51:28.88\00:51:32.42 And all the people said: "All the Lord says we will do. " 00:51:47.34\00:51:50.57 The people agreed to enter into a covenant relationship 00:51:50.77\00:51:54.58 with God before He ever spoke the Ten Commandments. 00:51:54.78\00:51:57.35 Did you know that? 00:51:57.55\00:51:59.25 Isn't that amazing? 00:51:59.65\00:52:00.98 He speaks this afterward. 00:52:01.58\00:52:05.09 But let me tell you something: 00:52:05.49\00:52:06.92 the history of Israel - you know this - 00:52:07.12\00:52:10.33 as a nation their history is largely one of covenant 00:52:10.53\00:52:14.13 unfaithfulness. 00:52:14.33\00:52:16.16 God endured a one- sided relationship for so long 00:52:16.56\00:52:21.17 with His chosen nation. 00:52:21.37\00:52:23.84 But He remained faithful to the covenant. 00:52:24.04\00:52:26.41 And the ongoing lineage of the seed, the succession of God's 00:52:26.61\00:52:30.35 covenant sonship, 00:52:30.55\00:52:32.55 was passed on to others like David and Solomon 00:52:32.75\00:52:35.35 and finally reached the point 00:52:35.75\00:52:38.89 of fulfillment in the last Adam, the person of Jesus Christ. 00:52:39.09\00:52:43.36 But it didn't end there! 00:52:43.86\00:52:45.29 It didn't end there 00:52:46.33\00:52:48.06 because Jesus Christ then produced seed. 00:52:48.26\00:52:52.43 Let's look at Isaiah 53. 00:52:52.63\00:52:55.40 Isaiah 53 verse 10 says: 00:52:55.80\00:52:59.31 He's saying: "Christ the Messiah will see His seed. " 00:53:08.68\00:53:12.65 In John chapter 12 Jesus tells a parable 00:53:27.64\00:53:31.74 about a kernel of wheat. He says: "Unless it falls 00:53:32.04\00:53:35.51 to the ground and dies it remains only a single seed. 00:53:35.71\00:53:39.05 But if it dies it produces many seeds. " 00:53:39.25\00:53:42.45 He was talking about Himself. 00:53:42.65\00:53:44.85 He was the holy Seed who had to die to pay our sin penalty. 00:53:45.25\00:53:50.33 But His resurrection proved that He had imperishable 00:53:50.53\00:53:54.76 life within Him 00:53:54.96\00:53:56.43 and His death and resurrection produced many seeds. 00:53:56.63\00:54:00.44 I Peter 1:23 says: "You were born again 00:54:00.84\00:54:04.27 not of corruptible seed but of incorruptible. " 00:54:04.47\00:54:08.31 Incorruptible seed is what you were born of. 00:54:09.34\00:54:12.71 Let me tell you something: the potential of every harvest 00:54:13.11\00:54:16.69 is in the seed. If I plant corn here, 00:54:16.89\00:54:19.52 I'm going to get corn. 00:54:19.72\00:54:21.06 If I plant wheat here, I'm going to get wheat. 00:54:21.09\00:54:23.12 All of your potential 00:54:23.73\00:54:26.29 is wrapped up in the person of Jesus Christ. 00:54:26.49\00:54:30.37 "In the beginning was the Word. 00:54:30.57\00:54:31.90 The Word was with God; the Word WAS God. " 00:54:31.93\00:54:34.44 The incorruptible seed 00:54:35.17\00:54:37.81 as He sows His divine nature into you. 00:54:38.01\00:54:42.51 Now Jesus... I have to get this point in... 00:54:42.71\00:54:45.51 God remained faithful to His everlasting covenant 00:54:46.45\00:54:50.25 of redemption. 00:54:50.45\00:54:51.79 He told His prophets He was going to renew it. 00:54:51.92\00:54:55.76 You know the word for new in Hebrew can mean renew. 00:54:55.96\00:54:58.73 So in Jeremiah 31 He says: 00:54:58.93\00:55:01.76 "The days are coming when I'm going to make a new covenant. " 00:55:01.96\00:55:04.47 And here's what He says in Hebrews 8. 00:55:05.03\00:55:07.34 It's quoting Jeremiah 31. 00:55:07.54\00:55:09.64 Verse 8 says: 00:55:09.84\00:55:11.17 Just as He wrote with His own finger on the tablets of stone 00:55:24.79\00:55:28.46 now He writes by the finger of God on our hearts. 00:55:28.66\00:55:32.03 You know, our hearts are the Most Holy Place. 00:55:32.93\00:55:36.70 We're the temple of God. Now that's the Most Holy Place. 00:55:37.50\00:55:40.40 And just as the Ten Commandments were the foundation, 00:55:40.80\00:55:44.64 the Bill of Rights for the old covenant, 00:55:44.84\00:55:47.58 they are also the Bill of Rights for the new covenant. 00:55:47.74\00:55:51.21 And it is... this covenant is the continuation. 00:55:51.71\00:55:57.49 It's not something brand new. 00:55:57.65\00:56:00.32 It's just the continuation of the everlasting covenant 00:56:00.52\00:56:03.49 of salvation by grace and righteousness by faith 00:56:03.69\00:56:07.83 that was promised to Abraham. 00:56:08.03\00:56:09.96 Look at Galatians 3. We'll look at verses 26, 27, and 29. 00:56:10.17\00:56:15.97 I love this. 00:56:16.84\00:56:18.17 That's a covenant term... now it's applied to you! 00:56:20.98\00:56:25.01 Do you see it? Are you getting the big picture? 00:56:44.80\00:56:48.30 God's moral law was the heart of the old and the new covenant. 00:56:49.70\00:56:54.11 Righteousness by faith is the only righteousness there is. 00:56:54.31\00:56:57.91 Sin is living apart from God. 00:56:58.11\00:57:00.52 The everlasting gospel IS the everlasting, eternal 00:57:00.72\00:57:05.55 covenant of redemption through the holy seed. 00:57:05.75\00:57:09.76 And His covenant blessings, His promises, 00:57:09.96\00:57:14.26 are conditioned upon covenant loyalty. 00:57:14.46\00:57:19.63 Obedience is to be a response of love, 00:57:19.83\00:57:23.54 an expression of our appreciation for salvation. 00:57:23.94\00:57:28.18 God wants you to be in covenant relationship with Him. 00:57:29.21\00:57:34.62
