the divine teacher, would

and minds this morning.

May Jesus be

For we ask these things

Our topic today is
The Law Before Sinai.

And it can actually
be framed as a question:

Did the law exist
prior to Mt. Sinai?

Or: Was it
invented at Mt. Sinai?
00:09:39.17\00:09:42.61
And before we do that we want to
00:09:42.81\00:09:45.38
go into a study and
ask ourselves the question:

Why is it in the New
Testament that there seems to be
00:09:49.72\00:09:52.92
a contradiction between
a set of verses on one side
00:09:53.12\00:09:57.69
that say that the law
has been done away with
00:09:57.89\00:10:00.56
and another set of
verses on the other side
00:10:00.76\00:10:03.06
that the law is still
binding? And many people
00:10:03.26\00:10:06.53
don't understand
that in the Bible
00:10:06.74\00:10:09.20
that there's actually
two laws in Scripture.
00:10:09.40\00:10:12.67
There were actually two
laws that were given by God
00:10:13.07\00:10:16.51
to Moses on Mt. Sinai,
00:10:16.71\00:10:19.71
and I want to do a
brief study this morning.

As we open the Word of God

and I want to put on the
screen a set of verses here.

The first one I want
to invite you to go to is

James chapter 2 and verse 10.

And this verse indicates that
the law has been established

and is still
binding upon all of us.

James chapter 2 and verse 10.

And we can see from the
context here that this is

actually talking
about the moral law.

James 2:10: "For
whoever shall keep the whole law

and yet stumble in one point

he is guilty of... " How much?
All. "He is guilty of all. "

The Bible indicates
that the law is so immutable,

so unchangeable,

that if you break
one you break them all.

Some individuals
will say: "Look, some laws

or some aspects of
the Ten Commandments

are not of as high a
priority as the other ones. "

They say you can get a 10% dis-
count on the Ten Commandments.

But the Bible
indicates even if you break one

you break them all. In
verse 11 the Bible says:

"For He who said:
'Do not commit adultery'

also said "Do not murder. '
00:11:34.49\00:11:36.22
Now if you do
not commit adultery
00:11:36.42\00:11:38.49
but you do murder you
have become a transgressor
00:11:38.69\00:11:41.90
of the law. " This
is clearly talking about
00:11:42.10\00:11:44.53
the Ten
Commandments and the moral law.

Let's go to our
second verse here.

Let's go to Colossians
chapter 2 and verse 14.

Every time I give a
study on the Sabbath

I know that
Colossians 2:14 is coming up

as an objection many times.

that was against us

which was contrary to us

He has taken it out of the way

having nailed it to the cross. "

Every time I give a
study on the Sabbath

this text is
quoted 90% of the time.

They say: "The law
has been done away with. "

"See the Bible says that the law
has been nailed to the cross.
00:12:30.38\00:12:34.32
We're no longer under
the law we're under grace. "

Now you'll notice here it says:

"Having wiped out the
hand- writing of requirements. "

Some of the
translations actually say
00:12:44.59\00:12:47.33
ordinances. We'll come
back to that in a moment.

And then in verse 15:
"Having disarmed principalities

and powers He made a
public spectacle of them

triumphing over them.
So let no one judge you

or new moon or Sabbaths. "

Now we'll come back
to that text in a moment.

that indicates that the law

after the cross we don't

have to keep the law any more.

Which seems to contradict
the passage that we just read

in James chapter 2 verse 10

that indicates if you
break one you break them all.

Now let's go to our
next passage very quickly.

Let's go to the words of Jesus
on the Sermon on the Mount.

Matthew chapter 5 verse 17-19.

Here Jesus gave the
greatest sermon ever preached.

Matthew chapters 5, 6, and
7: the Sermon on the Mount.

And here He talks about the law.

Matthew chapter 5 verse 17:

have come to destroy the law

destroy but to fulfill. "

Now some of our evangelical
friends will say that

that word fulfill means
to do away with the law.

Now let's put that in there;
it doesn't make any sense.

I did not come to destroy the
law but to do away with the law.

The word BUT
indicates a contrast.

Here He's actually
saying: "Look, I did not come

to destroy the law. I
came to magnify the law. "

And we can see
that in the Beatitudes.

He said: "You have heard it said
you shall not commit adultery.

But I say unto you if you look
at a woman to lust after her

you have committed
adultery in your heart. "

In other words,
He expands the law
00:14:29.50\00:14:31.40
from the
actions to the thoughts.

"You've heard it
said you shall not kill

but if you hate your brother
you have committed murder
00:14:36.54\00:14:40.34
in your heart.
" Here Jesus says:

"Look, I have not
come to destroy the law

but to magnify or
to fulfill the law. "

Now let's go to another text
that seems to contradict this.

Let's go to Ephesians
chapter 2 and verse 15.

Here the Apostle Paul
seems to allude to this notion

to some evangelicals that
the law is no longer binding.

Ephesians chapter 2 and verse 15

he's talking about a new cove-
nant relationship with Christ

after the cross. Ephesians 2:15.

The Bible says:
"Having abolished

in His - Christ's - flesh
the enmity that is the law

of commandments
contained in ordinances

so as to create
in Himself a new Man

from the two
thus making peace. "

Notice the Bible says that
"He abolished in His flesh. "

In other words, when
Jesus died on the cross

He abolished the law
contained in ordinances.

Now we'll come back to
this idea of ordinances

in a minute, but
many times this text

is used to say that
after we become a Christian,

after the cross, we no
longer have to keep the law

any more because when Jesus died

the law died with Him.

Let's go to the last book
in the Bible very quickly.

Revelation
chapter 14 and verse 12.

Here is another text
that seems to indicate

that the law is still binding,
that the law is eternal.

The last book of the Bible
Revelation chapter 14 verse 12.

This is a great eschatological
prophecy indicating that there

will be and end-time people
who will keep the commandments
00:16:18.94\00:16:22.31
of God and have
the faith of Jesus.

Revelation chapter 14 verse 12:

"Here is the
patience of the saints;

here are those who
keep the commandments of God

and have the faith of Jesus. "

Notice that there
is an inter-dependence

implied between
keeping the commandments of God

and the faith of
Jesus. In other words,

if you are in a
relationship with Christ

righteousness by
faith and keeping the law

are not mutually exclusive.

They are inter-related.

And the Bible indicates that
before Jesus comes a second time

there will be a people that keep
all 10 of God's commandments

Amen! AND have the faith of
Jesus, righteousness by faith.

We have this
notion that's put up today

that righteousness by
faith and being in a loving,

law-keeping
relationship with Christ
00:17:18.67\00:17:20.84
are mutually exclusive.

In other words, having
a relationship with Christ
00:17:22.80\00:17:24.91
is on one hand and you don't
have to keep the law any more.

But the Bible indicates that
if you are abiding in Christ

you will have fruit.
That's right... that's right!

Jesus will work in you
both too will and to do

of His good pleasure.

Let's go to Romans
chapter 6 and verse 14,

our next passage that
seems to indicate that the law

is no longer binding. And
this one is quoted many times

Sabbath study is given.

no dominion over you

for you are not under
the law but under grace. "

They say: "Look,
once you accept Christ

as your Savior you're
no longer under the law. "

But the Bible also
presents this principle

that when you
accept Jesus as Savior

you're also accepting
Him as Lord of your life.

That's not a popular
teaching today by the way.

Everyone wants Jesus as Savior

but after that you want to
say: "My Lord and my God. "

You want to have
Him Lord of your life.
