unpack this short verse.

another angel followed

saying: 'Babylon is fallen,

is fallen:

that great city
00:08:32.44\00:08:34.14
because she has
made all nations drink
00:08:34.68\00:08:37.81
of the wine of the
wrath of her fornication. ' "

Now obviously

Babylon is not literal.
00:08:46.35\00:08:49.09
Babylon is a world-wide system.

Babylon is symbolic.
It's not the literal city

over in the
valley of Mesopotamia.

It represents a global system.

Now Babylon in the Bible -

more specifically in
the book of Revelation -

has a broad
meaning and it also has

a more narrow meaning.

Now first of all, let's
take a look at the broad

meaning of Babylon
because we cannot understand

the fall of Babylon unless
we understand what Babylon is.

So go with me to
Revelation 16:13.

We're going to notice that
Babylon in the broadest sense

is composed of a three-fold
union at the end of time.

I'm reading now from
verse 13 and verse 14.

"And I saw three
unclean spirits like frogs

coming out of the
mouth of the dragon,

out of the mouth of the beast,
00:09:54.99\00:09:56.69
and out of the mouth
of the false prophet.
00:09:57.36\00:09:59.56
For they are spirits
of demons performing signs

which go out to the kings of
the earth and the whole world

to gather them to
battle of that great day

of God Almighty. "

So you have these three powers.

In the broadest sense
Babylon is composed of three:

the dragon, the
beast, and the false prophet.

Now you might be wondering:
are those really the three parts

of Babylon? Well,
when we go down to verse 19

in the same chapter we find
that the great city has 3 parts

which we just read about.
00:10:36.13\00:10:37.73
It says in verse 19...
00:10:38.13\00:10:39.73
this is when
Babylon actually falls:

"Now that great city was
divided into three parts.

And the cities of the
nations fell and great Babylon
00:10:47.28\00:10:51.88
was remembered before God
to give her the cup of the wine
00:10:52.08\00:10:55.98
of the
fierceness of His wrath. "

So you notice
that when Babylon falls
00:10:59.49\00:11:01.99
she's divided into three parts.

And those three parts we read
about in the immediate context

are the dragon, the
beast, and the false prophet.
00:11:09.73\00:11:14.04
Now in Revelation 16 it's not
the first time that we encounter
00:11:15.10\00:11:19.77
this three-fold union.
00:11:19.97\00:11:21.31
Actually we have to go
back to Revelation chapter 13
00:11:21.84\00:11:26.08
in order to understand
this trilogy of powers
00:11:26.48\00:11:31.95
that compose Babylon.

In Revelation chapter 13
00:11:34.16\00:11:36.19
we have the dragon;
we have the sea beast;
00:11:36.39\00:11:41.93
and then we have the
beast that comes from the earth.

Those are the same three
powers that we read about
00:11:47.40\00:11:50.34
as we began our study:
00:11:50.54\00:11:51.87
the dragon, the sea
beast, and the land beast

all in Revelation chapter 13.

Now in Revelation 17 we encoun-
ter this three-fold union again

but they don't
have the same names.

In Revelation
chapter 17 what we have

is the period when the
beast's deadly wound is healed.
00:12:10.53\00:12:14.83
In other words,
Revelation 17 is describing

the future
career of the sea beast.

And in Revelation chapter 17
these three powers are described
00:12:21.80\00:12:26.84
as the kings of
the earth, the harlot,

and the daughters of the harlot.

Now basically the
dragon or the kings

represent the civil
powers of the world.

The sea beast and the harlot

represents the
Roman Catholic papacy.

And the land beast or
the beast from the earth -

the daughters in Revelation 17-

represent the
apostate Protestant churches.

Now somebody might wonder
about the dragon representing

the kings of the earth.
Well actually, the dragon
00:13:05.15\00:13:08.88
represents Satan working THROUGH
the civil powers of the world.

Let me just give you 2
or 3 evidences of this.

In Revelation
chapter 12 and verse 4
00:13:18.43\00:13:20.63
we're told about a dragon
that wants to devour the child
00:13:21.03\00:13:23.90
when the child is
born. That child is Jesus.
00:13:24.10\00:13:26.13
It says: "And the
dragon stood before the woman
00:13:26.53\00:13:28.87
who was ready to give
birth to devour her child
00:13:29.07\00:13:31.61
as soon as it was born. "
00:13:31.81\00:13:33.94
Of course, Satan did not stand
next to the woman to devour
00:13:34.24\00:13:37.75
the child. Satan
used the Roman Empire...
00:13:37.95\00:13:41.62
more specifically Herod.

Ellen White in

wrote: "Thus while the dragon
primarily represents Satan

represented as the dragon

the commandments of God

and who have the
faith of Jesus. "

So you notice that she identi-
fies the dragon as kings,

rulers, and governors.

So you have this three-fold
union at the end of time:

the dragon, the beast, and the
land beast or the false prophet.

you have the kings, you
have the harlot, and you have

the daughters of the harlot.

That is Babylon in the
broadest sense of the word.

but we need to look at Babylon

though Babylon is composed

one of those powers

is the central figure.

describes the sea beast.

here that the sea beast

dragon gives its seat,

its power, and its
authority to the sea beast.

Then the sea beast
rules for 42 months.

It speaks blasphemies
against the Most High.

It persecutes the
saints of the Most High.

It claims to have the
power to change God's law.

It tramples on the heavenly
tabernacle and those who dwell

in heaven. At the end of
its first stage of its career

it receives a deadly wound

but after a while the
deadly wound is healed

and the entire world will
marvel after the sea beast.

So who is the central
figure in Revelation 13:1-10?

It's the sea
beast... not the dragon.

The dragon simply
gives his throne, his power,

beast that rises from the earth
