Well, because 00:02:10.66\00:02:14.93 Matthew and Luke are related to Revelation 00:02:15.00\00:02:17.67 chapter 11 and verse 2. So, we have to take a 00:02:17.77\00:02:20.87 look at that, as well. So let's go to page 211. 00:02:20.97\00:02:26.04 A study of the two witnesses of Revelation 00:02:26.91\00:02:29.24 11 would not be complete unless we take some time 00:02:29.34\00:02:35.08 to study parallel passages in Matthew 24 and Luke 00:02:35.15\00:02:41.22 chapter 21. These chapters bear directly on what we 00:02:41.32\00:02:46.76 have been studying in the last couple of sessions. 00:02:46.86\00:02:49.83 So, let's go to Matthew chapter 24. I want you 00:02:50.37\00:02:54.84 to notice that in this chapter, there are four 00:02:54.90\00:02:57.71 sequential signs. There are several signs, but 00:02:58.34\00:03:01.81 four that I want to focus on. The first 00:03:01.88\00:03:05.45 sign is the destruction of earthly Jerusalem. 00:03:05.51\00:03:10.79 We find that in verses 15-20. Now, you're 00:03:11.65\00:03:14.56 gonna have to read the verses at your leisure 00:03:14.66\00:03:16.93 to follow along. I can only give you the summary 00:03:18.26\00:03:20.56 now. The second sign that is mentioned in 00:03:20.66\00:03:23.67 Matthew chapter 24 is a period of tribulation. 00:03:23.80\00:03:27.17 The third sign that is mentioned is signs in 00:03:28.80\00:03:31.87 the sun and in the moon. By the way, the period 00:03:31.97\00:03:35.88 of tribulation is described in verses 21-28. The signs 00:03:35.94\00:03:40.45 in the sun and moon are described in verse 29. 00:03:40.52\00:03:43.85 And then the final sign is that the powers in 00:03:44.82\00:03:48.52 the heavens will be shaken when the Son of man appears. 00:03:48.62\00:03:53.86 So, those are the four central signs of Matthew 00:03:53.96\00:03:58.37 24. The destruction of earthly Jerusalem, 00:03:58.47\00:04:01.24 a period of tribulation, signs in the sun and moon, 00:04:01.77\00:04:05.41 and the powers in the heavens are shaken 00:04:06.17\00:04:09.01 when the Son of man appears. Now, when you 00:04:09.58\00:04:13.11 compare the parallel passage in Luke- because 00:04:13.21\00:04:16.69 Luke 21 describes the same basic ideas of 00:04:16.79\00:04:19.55 Matthew 24. When you go to Luke 21, there 00:04:19.65\00:04:22.86 appear to be only three signs and not four. What 00:04:22.96\00:04:28.63 are the three signs? The destruction of earthly 00:04:28.73\00:04:31.93 Jerusalem-that's verses 20-24-signs in the sun, 00:04:32.03\00:04:38.04 moon, and stars-that's verse 25-and the powers 00:04:38.14\00:04:42.44 of heaven will be shaken at the coming of the Son 00:04:42.54\00:04:45.45 of man-that's verses 25 and 26. So the 00:04:45.55\00:04:50.89 question is, which sign is missing in Luke that 00:04:50.99\00:04:54.66 is found in Matthew 24? It is the tribulation sign. 00:04:54.76\00:05:00.13 Luke does not mention any tribulation sign. 00:05:01.06\00:05:04.63 However, the question is, is the tribulation really 00:05:05.50\00:05:09.50 missing in Luke chapter 21? The answer is no. 00:05:09.60\00:05:14.84 Luke simply describes the tribulation sign 00:05:15.68\00:05:18.91 differently than Matthew does. Basically, the 00:05:19.65\00:05:25.62 tribulation sign is described in Luke 00:05:25.75\00:05:27.66 as the Gentiles trampling the Holy City. Now you 00:05:27.76\00:05:33.09 see the reason why this is related to Revelation 00:05:33.19\00:05:36.43 11:2, because you have a trampling of the Holy 00:05:36.53\00:05:40.24 City. Now, let's go to our next section. 00:05:40.34\00:05:44.34 This is page 212. One thing is clear: From the first 00:05:44.44\00:05:50.21 part of Luke 21 and verse 24- in fact, let's go 00:05:50.35\00:05:54.25 there now and read that verse, Luke 21:24, 00:05:54.35\00:06:00.49 and let's see what fact is clear there in this 00:06:00.96\00:06:04.49 particular verse. It says there, "And they," 00:06:05.23\00:06:09.33 this is the Jews... [reads text on-screen] 00:06:10.43\00:06:15.10 And you'll notice in the New King James 00:06:22.11\00:06:23.45 Version, there's a period there, right? Which 00:06:23.48\00:06:26.21 makes the separation. So...[repeats beginning of text] 00:06:26.28\00:06:31.39 And then I want you to notice the second part 00:06:36.09\00:06:38.39 of the verse. [continues latter half] 00:06:38.46\00:06:43.50 Does that have any relationship with Revelation 00:06:50.01\00:06:53.14 11:2? Very clearly. Instead of 42 months, 00:06:53.21\00:06:58.15 you have the expression, "the times of the Gentiles," 00:06:58.58\00:07:00.62 right? And you have a mention of Jerusalem, 00:07:00.68\00:07:03.12 also. So, you'll notice here in Luke chapter 00:07:03.59\00:07:08.49 21 and verse 24 that you have the literal 00:07:08.52\00:07:12.93 destruction of the literal city of Jerusalem 00:07:13.60\00:07:16.03 and its literal temple in the first half of 00:07:16.13\00:07:20.14 Matthew chapter 21 and verse 24. This is the 00:07:20.20\00:07:23.74 part where it says, "And they will fall 00:07:23.81\00:07:25.61 by the edge of the sword and be led away captive 00:07:25.67\00:07:28.88 into all nations." Period. On the other hand, the 00:07:29.51\00:07:34.42 second part of Luke 21:24 describes the trampling 00:07:34.48\00:07:40.66 of spiritual Jerusalem by spiritual Gentiles 00:07:41.06\00:07:45.66 during a symbolic period. In other words, Luke 21:24 00:07:46.03\00:07:53.17 is speaking about two trampling's of Jerusalem. 00:07:53.80\00:07:56.71 The first refers to literal Jerusalem. 00:07:57.14\00:08:00.24 The second half of the verse refers to spiritual 00:08:00.31\00:08:04.05 Jerusalem. Now, let's notice what principle 00:08:04.08\00:08:09.18 we are applying here. Louis Weir, -[whom] 00:08:09.25\00:08:13.42 has some really, really fantastic material. 00:08:14.06\00:08:17.86 We have many books of his here at Secrets 00:08:17.96\00:08:20.53 Unsealed in our store- expresses this principle 00:08:20.60\00:08:25.60 of how we can say that Matthew 21:24, the 00:08:25.70\00:08:29.44 first half of the verse, describes the literal 00:08:29.50\00:08:31.41 destruction of Jerusalem, whereas the second half 00:08:31.47\00:08:34.01 describes the period of the trampling of spiritual 00:08:34.58\00:08:38.25 Jerusalem by the Gentiles for 42 months. Here's 00:08:38.31\00:08:43.95 the principle: In his book, The King of the 00:08:44.05\00:08:46.99 North at Jerusalem, pg. 75, he wrote, "When 00:08:47.09\00:08:50.53 passing over into the Christian era, there is 00:08:50.69\00:08:54.93 an automatic transition from," what? "From literal 00:08:55.03\00:08:59.23 to spiritual Babylon." Is Revelation's Babylon 00:09:00.47\00:09:03.30 the literal city over in Iraq? No! Of course 00:09:03.41\00:09:07.01 not. It is a spiritual global system, right? 00:09:07.08\00:09:10.65 The harlot is seated on many waters. All 00:09:11.08\00:09:13.98 nations, tongues, and multitudes follow the 00:09:14.08\00:09:15.92 harlot. Babylon at the end of time is global. 00:09:16.02\00:09:19.59 In the Old Testament, when Israel is God's 00:09:20.52\00:09:23.02 literal people, Babylon is what? Literal. Very 00:09:23.12\00:09:27.26 important principle. The statement continues, 00:09:27.36\00:09:29.86 "When passing over into the Christian era, there 00:09:29.96\00:09:32.73 is an automatic transition from literal to spiritual 00:09:32.83\00:09:35.27 Babylon, from literal to spiritual," what? 00:09:35.37\00:09:38.64 "Jerusalem, from literal lands of Israel and 00:09:39.64\00:09:42.91 Babylon to their spiritual antitypes." What is a 00:09:43.01\00:09:48.58 spiritual antitype of Babylon? The papacy. 00:09:48.68\00:09:52.39 What is the spiritual antitype of Jerusalem? 00:09:53.36\00:09:56.22 Duh, the saints of the Most High. Aren't those the 00:09:57.03\00:10:01.06 two enemies in Daniel 7? In Revelation 13? Absolutely! 00:10:01.16\00:10:05.63 So, what is Jerusalem in the period of the 00:10:06.07\00:10:10.54 Christian church? It's the church! What is 00:10:10.64\00:10:14.08 Jerusalem when Jerusalem was destroyed by the 00:10:14.18\00:10:16.95 Romans? It is literal Jerusalem. So if we're 00:10:17.01\00:10:20.42 dealing with literal Jerusalem, Jerusalem 00:10:20.52\00:10:22.58 is literal; if we're dealing with spiritual 00:10:22.68\00:10:24.79 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, of course, is symbolic. 00:10:24.85\00:10:28.89 Are you understanding the principle? By the 00:10:29.32\00:10:33.13 way, when did probation close for the literal 00:10:33.26\00:10:35.16 Jewish nation? In the year 34 when Stephen 00:10:35.26\00:10:38.37 was stoned. There, you transition to what? To 00:10:38.50\00:10:42.64 the Christian church, which is now Jerusalem. 00:10:42.74\00:10:44.27 Not literal Jerusalem- symbolic, or spiritual, 00:10:45.67\00:10:49.28 Jerusalem. Now, let's go to the bottom of 00:10:49.34\00:10:51.41 page 212. "When the second part of Luke 21:24 00:10:51.51\00:10:56.55 describes the trampling of Jerusalem, it is not 00:10:56.69\00:11:00.09 referring to," what? "To the physical city 00:11:00.19\00:11:03.36 of brick and mortar. Jesus is," what? 00:11:03.46\00:11:07.06 "Personifying the city." He's treating the city 00:11:07.90\00:11:11.30 as a person, in other words. Notice the following 00:11:11.40\00:11:14.70 text that used the word 'Jerusalem' to refer to 00:11:14.80\00:11:17.81 the people in the city. 2 Kings 24:14-15. 00:11:17.91\00:11:24.91 Speaking about Nebuchadnezzar when he conquered Jerusalem, 00:11:25.95\00:11:29.18 it says, "And he carried into captivity all Jerusalem." 00:11:29.28\00:11:34.06 Wow, pretty difficult to transfer the whole 00:11:35.26\00:11:37.26 physical city to Babylon, right? What does it 00:11:37.36\00:11:40.53 mean when it says, "He carried into captivity 00:11:40.63\00:11:42.90 all Jerusalem"? It's the people of Jerusalem. 00:11:43.00\00:11:45.90 All the captains. You have the definition. 00:11:46.63\00:11:48.94 All the "mighty men of valor," 10,000 captives, 00:11:49.04\00:11:53.51 and all the craftsmen and smiths! None remained 00:11:53.64\00:11:56.64 except the poorest people of the land. So, Jerusalem 00:11:56.75\00:11:59.48 is defined as the what? As the people that lived 00:11:59.58\00:12:02.78 in the city. Jesus in Luke 19:41-44 said 00:12:02.85\00:12:07.99 something similar. Jesus is descending the Mount 00:12:08.06\00:12:11.36 of Olives to Jerusalem to enter the temple 00:12:11.46\00:12:13.56 for the final times of His ministry, and we're 00:12:13.63\00:12:18.37 told there, "Now as He drew near, He saw the 00:12:18.47\00:12:21.60 city and wept over it, saying, 'If you had 00:12:21.70\00:12:25.74 known, even you"... Who is He talking to? 00:12:25.84\00:12:29.61 The city! Can a city really hear what He's 00:12:30.45\00:12:35.28 saying? Once again, Jerusalem refers to 00:12:35.35\00:12:39.85 what? To the inhabitants. "Now as He drew near, 00:12:39.95\00:12:44.23 He saw the city and wept over it, saying, 00:12:44.33\00:12:46.33 'If you had known, even you, especially this in 00:12:46.39\00:12:48.80 your day, the things that make for your 00:12:48.86\00:12:51.00 peace. However, now they are hidden from your eyes, 00:12:51.07\00:12:54.24 for days will come upon you when your enemies 00:12:54.37\00:12:56.87 will build an embankment around you, surround 00:12:56.97\00:13:00.01 you, and close you in on every side and 00:13:00.08\00:13:03.45 level you and your children within you"... 00:13:03.55\00:13:06.61 So it's not only the physical city, but what? 00:13:06.72\00:13:09.98 The children that live there. "Your children within you 00:13:10.39\00:13:13.32 to the ground, and they will not leave in you 00:13:13.39\00:13:16.29 one stone upon another, because you did not know 00:13:16.39\00:13:20.10 the time of your visitation." So what is Jerusalem? 00:13:20.20\00:13:25.57 In the Old Testament, Jerusalem is the population 00:13:26.53\00:13:30.01 of Jerusalem. In the church age, what is 00:13:30.11\00:13:33.88 Jerusalem? It is the members of the Christian 00:13:33.94\00:13:36.95 church; it is globalized, if you please. Notice 00:13:37.05\00:13:41.18 also Matthew 23:37-39. Once again, Jesus 00:13:41.28\00:13:45.65 personifies Jerusalem. Is there 00:14:35.07\00:14:39.27 a mention of Jerusalem in both? Yes. Is there 00:14:39.34\00:14:43.61 a mention of trampling in both? Yes. Is there 00:14:43.71\00:14:47.72 a mention of Gentiles in both? [Yes.] Is there 00:14:47.82\00:14:51.82 a mention of times in both? Yes. In Luke, 00:14:51.89\00:14:56.66 it is the times of the Gentiles, whereas in 00:14:57.13\00:15:00.00 the book of Revelation it is specified as what? 00:15:00.13\00:15:03.57 42 months. So what are the times of the Gentiles? 00:15:04.00\00:15:07.74 The times of the Gentiles are 42 months. Now let's 00:15:08.50\00:15:12.27 notice Revelation 11:2-3. This is what we already 00:15:12.34\00:15:17.15 studied earlier today. [reads text on-screen] 00:15:17.25\00:15:22.42 "For it has been given," is the usual way that 00:15:25.75\00:15:29.79 it was translated, but we notice that the 00:15:29.92\00:15:32.26 better translation is what? "For it was given 00:15:32.39\00:15:36.30 to the Gentiles." When was it given to the Gentiles? 00:15:36.43\00:15:38.77 In what year? In the year 538. "It was given 00:15:39.63\00:15:44.07 to the Gentiles," and what would the Gentiles 00:15:44.17\00:15:46.64 do after 538? "And they will tread the Holy City"- 00:15:46.74\00:15:51.25 what is the Holy City? [Jerusalem.] Yeah, 00:15:51.31\00:15:55.58 Jerusalem. What kind of Jerusalem? [Spiritual.] 00:15:55.72\00:15:58.62 Spiritual Jerusalem, because here, we're 00:15:58.72\00:16:00.66 in the Christian age. We're no longer dealing 00:16:00.76\00:16:03.66 with literal Israel; we're dealing with the 00:16:03.76\00:16:05.66 Christian age. Now let's read, once again, Revelation 00:16:05.76\00:16:08.33 11:2-3. "However, leave out the court which is 00:16:08.43\00:16:12.10 outside the temple and do not measure it, for 00:16:12.20\00:16:14.50 it was given to the Gentiles, and they 00:16:14.60\00:16:17.64 will tread the Holy City underfoot for 42 months, 00:16:17.71\00:16:21.44 and I will give power to my two witnesses, 00:16:21.98\00:16:24.01 and they will prophesy 1,260 days, clothed in 00:16:24.08\00:16:28.12 sackcloth." Are the 42 months and the 1,260 00:16:28.22\00:16:31.55 days the same period? [Yes.] Yes, they are 00:16:31.65\00:16:34.76 the same period. Now, here comes the key 00:16:34.82\00:16:36.96 point: When John wrote Revelation 11:2, at the 00:16:37.03\00:16:42.66 end of the first century, it is believed that John 00:16:42.76\00:16:46.53 wrote the book of Revelation around the year 95 A.D. 00:16:46.60\00:16:50.24 When was the city of Jerusalem destroyed? 00:16:50.31\00:16:52.47 In the year 70, so the city had already been 00:16:53.01\00:16:55.21 destroyed-for how long? At least for 25 years. 00:16:55.31\00:16:58.61 So when John wrote Revelation 11:2, at the end of the 00:16:59.08\00:17:02.05 first century, the Romans had destroyed the literal 00:17:02.12\00:17:05.79 city of Jerusalem and it had been in ruins 00:17:05.89\00:17:08.56 for 25 years. So can Revelation 11:2 apply 00:17:08.62\00:17:12.79 to literal Jerusalem? No! The Gentiles had 00:17:12.89\00:17:17.53 already taken the Jews captive, so this cannot 00:17:17.63\00:17:21.30 refer to the trampling of the literal city of 00:17:21.40\00:17:24.54 Jerusalem in the year 70 A.D. Even the literal 00:17:24.64\00:17:30.91 treading down of the outer sanctuary had 00:17:31.01\00:17:33.78 taken place more than 42 months before John's 00:17:33.85\00:17:36.95 time. So even if you take the 42 months 00:17:37.05\00:17:38.95 as being literal, that doesn't amount to 25 00:17:39.09\00:17:41.99 years, implying that the number was what? 00:17:42.06\00:17:46.46 It can't be a literal number, because Jerusalem 00:17:47.70\00:17:50.30 was destroyed 25 years before. So even if you 00:17:50.37\00:17:52.93 say "42 months before John wrote," that's 00:17:53.03\00:17:56.71 only three-and-a-half years...so it doesn't 00:17:56.81\00:17:58.61 square. So once again, even the literal treading 00:17:58.71\00:18:01.68 down of the outer sanctuary had taken place 00:18:01.74\00:18:04.21 more than 42 months before John's time, 00:18:04.28\00:18:06.98 implying-this is the proof of the year/day principle- 00:18:07.12\00:18:10.35 implying that the number was what? Symbolic for 00:18:10.42\00:18:13.82 the whole period from its devastation in some 00:18:13.92\00:18:17.53 sense until it's what? Until its restoration. 00:18:17.63\00:18:21.63 So, Revelation 11:2 contains the very same 00:18:22.36\00:18:26.17 four elements that Jesus mentioned in Luke 21:24- 00:18:26.27\00:18:31.37 the second half of the verse. Holy City-Jerusalem- 00:18:31.44\00:18:35.01 trampling, Gentiles, and 42 months (refers 00:18:35.11\00:18:40.08 to times of the Gentiles). Are we on a good track 00:18:40.18\00:18:43.18 here? Good. Now, who are the Gentiles that 00:18:43.28\00:18:47.12 are mentioned here? Remember we talked 00:18:47.19\00:18:49.29 about the Gentiles this morning? Remember we 00:18:49.36\00:18:51.83 read from Albert Barnes, the Bible commentator? 00:18:51.93\00:18:54.56 Who did he say the Gentiles were? The 00:18:54.96\00:18:57.47 Roman Catholic papacy, and he was right on 00:18:57.57\00:18:59.73 target, wasn't he? Who are the Gentiles, and 00:18:59.83\00:19:03.10 what does the word 'Jerusalem' mean? We 00:19:03.20\00:19:06.37 have already pointed out that Jerusalem during 00:19:06.47\00:19:08.51 the Christian dispensation refers to God's faithful 00:19:08.58\00:19:12.75 church. We did that this morning. And 'Gentiles' 00:19:12.81\00:19:16.35 refers to those who are enemies of Christ's 00:19:16.45\00:19:19.52 faithful church. And then you can read all of these 00:19:20.96\00:19:23.73 texts that we have here; we don't have time to 00:19:23.83\00:19:25.99 read all of these texts, but I hope that when 00:19:26.06\00:19:28.70 you get home, you'll sit down and read all 00:19:28.80\00:19:31.03 of these verses that I have in parentheses. 00:19:31.13\00:19:33.20 We just can't go through all of them. Next paragraph. 00:19:33.34\00:19:36.34 In Revelation 11:1, the angel told John to measure 00:19:37.37\00:19:42.01 what? The temple and those who worship in 00:19:42.11\00:19:45.25 it. Now we're going- Revelation 11:1, does 00:19:45.38\00:19:48.95 that belong with chapter 11? [No.] No. What does 00:19:49.02\00:19:52.12 it belong with? Revelation chapter 10. It's the 00:19:52.19\00:19:56.26 conclusion to Revelation 10. You say, "How do 00:19:56.32\00:19:59.56 you know that?" Well, let me just summarize; 00:19:59.63\00:20:01.16 we're gonna study Revelation 10 in detail. Revelation 00:20:01.23\00:20:04.83 10 ends by the angel telling John, "You must 00:20:04.93\00:20:08.84 prophesy again to nations, tongues, peoples, and 00:20:10.07\00:20:13.17 kings." Okay? And then, in the very next verse, 00:20:13.27\00:20:17.18 you have the measuring of the temple. Are you 00:20:17.58\00:20:21.55 following the sequence? "Messiah shall be 00:47:23.87\00:47:29.78 cut off, but not for Himself." What is that 00:47:29.84\00:47:33.15 referring to? The death of Jesus. And the people 00:47:33.21\00:47:37.12 of the prince who is to come..." Who are 00:47:37.22\00:47:41.02 the people of the prince who is to come? The people 00:47:41.12\00:47:44.19 are the Jews.
