Revelation 11:2. 00:01:54.18\00:02:00.35 You're probably wondering why we're starting our 00:02:00.45\00:02:02.18 study of Revelation 11 in verse 2! Well, because 00:02:02.28\00:02:06.02 we're gonna find that verse 1 belongs to chapter 00:02:06.12\00:02:08.62 10. That'll become clear a little bit later on. So, 00:02:08.72\00:02:13.03 just in the corner of your mind, remember that Revelation 00:02:13.09\00:02:17.17 11:1 should be the conclusion of chapter 10, okay? The 00:02:17.27\00:02:23.17 chapter division is in the wrong place. So, we're 00:02:23.27\00:02:25.94 gonna begin in Revelation 11:2. Let's read that 00:02:26.04\00:02:28.54 verse. We're gonna go verse-by-verse through 00:02:28.64\00:02:31.18 Revelation 11 in the next two sessions. It says 00:02:31.25\00:02:34.78 here in Revelation 11:2... First of all, what is the meaning of "the court" 00:03:04.35\00:03:09.35 in this verse? What is the meaning of "the court"? 00:03:10.12\00:03:13.39 Second question, why does the angel command 00:03:14.29\00:03:16.73 John not to measure the court of the temple? 00:03:16.83\00:03:19.89 Why does he say, "Don't measure the temple, but don't measure 00:03:21.16\00:03:23.40 the court"? Question #3) Daniel 8:10-13, which 00:03:23.57\00:03:29.24 should be fresh in our minds because of the 00:03:29.37\00:03:30.71 Sabbath School lesson last Sabbath, refers to 00:03:30.74\00:03:33.91 trampling the sanctuary and the host, and interfering 00:03:34.01\00:03:38.05 with the work of the prince of the host. 00:03:38.15\00:03:41.28 Revelation 13:5 speaks of the blaspheming of the 00:03:41.38\00:03:46.29 tabernacle in heaven and those who worship 00:03:46.39\00:03:48.39 there. Do these actions have anything to do with 00:03:48.49\00:03:53.40 measuring the temple? In other words, is there 00:03:53.50\00:03:56.16 any relationship between Daniel 8 and Revelation 00:03:56.26\00:03:59.70 chapter 11:2? #4) What does the holy city 00:03:59.80\00:04:05.27 represent in this verse? What does the Holy City 00:04:05.94\00:04:08.58 represent?-the Holy City that is trampled. 00:04:08.68\00:04:11.81 Question #5) Who are the Gentiles who trampled 00:04:12.71\00:04:15.68 the Holy City? Question #6) When did the period 00:04:15.78\00:04:21.22 of the 42 months begin and end? Question #7) 00:04:21.32\00:04:27.16 Are the 42 months past or future, as many are 00:04:27.66\00:04:32.67 teaching in the Adventist Church these days? And 00:04:32.77\00:04:35.70 #8) Did God give the court of the temple to the Gentiles 00:04:35.77\00:04:39.74 before the measurement of the temple began, or 00:04:40.88\00:04:45.01 after the measurement of the temple began? 00:04:45.08\00:04:48.45 Are you understanding the questions? Now, we 00:04:49.32\00:04:52.82 have the questions; let's look for answers to the 00:04:52.89\00:04:55.32 questions. Daniel and Revelation refer to the 00:04:55.39\00:04:59.56 1,260 days in different ways and with different 00:04:59.63\00:05:03.16 emphases. You have in Revelation- in, actually, 00:05:03.26\00:05:09.24 the next page, you're gonna find several places 00:05:09.30\00:05:13.07 where you have the 1,260 days mentioned. In Daniel 00:05:13.14\00:05:19.31 7, the emphasis falls upon what the papacy 00:05:19.35\00:05:24.62 did as a system on earth during the 1,260 years - 00:05:24.69\00:05:30.39 the actions, in other words, of the little horn. It 00:05:30.43\00:05:33.50 blasphemed God, it persecuted the saints of God, it thought 00:05:33.56\00:05:36.97 it could change God's law, etc. So, the focus 00:05:37.03\00:05:40.00 in Daniel 7 is on the actions of the little horn 00:05:40.04\00:05:42.27 for time, times, and the dividing of time. 00:05:42.97\00:05:45.77 In Revelation 12 that mentions "time, times, 00:05:46.27\00:05:49.41 and dividing of time," and also 1,260 days, 00:05:49.44\00:05:53.62 the central focus is on Satan persecuting God's 00:05:53.68\00:05:57.05 people. The woman has to flee to the wilderness 00:05:57.12\00:06:00.42 because a dragon is after her. So, the focus there 00:06:00.56\00:06:02.86 is upon Satan persecuting the Church. In Revelation 00:06:02.96\00:06:07.36 13, the emphasis is different. In Revelation 00:06:07.46\00:06:11.13 13, we are told that the beast attacks the 00:06:11.23\00:06:14.80 name of God and those who dwell in heaven and 00:06:14.90\00:06:19.61 the heavenly sanctuary and the saints of the heavenly 00:06:19.71\00:06:22.28 sanctuary. So, Revelation 13, the emphasis is an 00:06:22.34\00:06:25.61 attack on the sanctuary and on the host of the 00:06:25.71\00:06:29.55 sanctuary. Now, in Revelation 11, which 00:06:29.72\00:06:33.89 mentions 1,260 days and 42 months, the emphasis 00:06:33.99\00:06:38.19 falls upon the attack on the Word of God. So, 00:06:38.29\00:06:42.63 you have these time periods in Daniel 7, Revelation 12, 00:06:42.70\00:06:46.84 Revelation 13, and Revelation 11, and the same time 00:06:46.94\00:06:51.24 period is mentioned in all of these places, but 00:06:51.34\00:06:53.98 the emphasis is, each time, different. Now, 00:06:54.08\00:06:58.55 Ellen White makes a definite connection 00:06:58.65\00:07:00.42 between what the papacy did with the Bible during 00:07:01.38\00:07:05.29 the 1,260 years-by the way, this is the fourth 00:07:05.39\00:07:07.69 trumpet, right? 1,260 years is the fourth 00:07:07.79\00:07:11.09 trumpet-and the events of the French Revolution, 00:07:11.19\00:07:14.60 which is which trumpet? The fifth trumpet. The 00:07:14.70\00:07:18.33 proscription of the Bible, or the prohibition of the 00:07:18.43\00:07:21.44 Bible, by the papacy during the 1,260 years 00:07:21.54\00:07:25.34 led to spiritual ignorance that exploded in the French 00:07:26.01\00:07:31.25 Revolution and led the revolutionaries to crucify 00:07:31.35\00:07:34.15 the two witnesses, or the Bible. Is that clear? 00:07:34.32\00:07:37.32 [Yes.] Notice these statements from Ellen 00:07:38.22\00:07:40.22 White, which we read yesterday. "The war 00:07:40.32\00:07:42.82 against the Bible," this is during the 1,260 00:07:42.89\00:07:47.50 years, "carried forward for so many centuries 00:07:47.60\00:07:50.83 in France, culminated in the scenes of the 00:07:50.93\00:07:54.14 Revolution. That terrible out breaking was but the 00:07:54.24\00:07:58.21 legitimate result of Rome's suppression of 00:07:58.31\00:08:01.94 the," what? Of the scriptures. Does she link the 1,260 00:08:02.04\00:08:05.41 years with the French Revolution? Yes. And 00:08:05.55\00:08:08.25 in the second statement, it becomes even clearer. 00:08:08.35\00:08:11.35 It was popery that had begun the work, which 00:08:11.85\00:08:16.26 atheism was what? Completing. [chuckles] So, you have 00:08:16.36\00:08:20.70 to study these two trumpets together. See, during 00:08:20.76\00:08:23.57 the fourth trumpet, you have the beginning of 00:08:23.63\00:08:25.57 the work against the Bible; in the French 00:08:25.67\00:08:27.77 Revolution, you have the conclusion of the 00:08:27.87\00:08:30.21 work against the Bible. She continues, "The 00:08:30.34\00:08:33.07 policy of Rome had wrought out those 00:08:33.17\00:08:35.41 conditions-social, political, and religious- 00:08:35.51\00:08:38.58 that were hurrying France on to ruin." Now, this 00:08:39.01\00:08:44.02 is an important sequence in Daniel 8 that Revelation 00:08:44.12\00:08:47.59 11:2 echoes. Daniel 8 tells us-now, we're 00:08:47.66\00:08:52.63 gonna deal with Daniel 8 first-Daniel 8 tells 00:08:52.69\00:08:55.26 us that the little horn trampled what? The 00:08:55.36\00:08:58.13 sanctuary and those who worship there, 00:08:58.23\00:09:01.07 and took away the daily? which we've already 00:09:01.77\00:09:04.94 studied, a word that describes the work of 00:09:05.04\00:09:07.34 the priest in the court and in the Holy Place. 00:09:07.44\00:09:10.31 Both Daniel and Revelation use the word...what? 00:09:10.75\00:09:14.22 'Trample' as it relates to the sanctuary. The 00:09:14.75\00:09:18.62 trampling of the sanctuary, the host, and the daily? 00:09:18.72\00:09:23.06 transpires for 42 months. And then, at the end 00:09:23.16\00:09:27.00 of the 2,300 days, the process of cleansing the 00:09:27.10\00:09:30.80 sanctuary begins. Thus, Daniel describes a clear 00:09:30.93\00:09:35.20 transition from the daily service to what? To the 00:09:35.34\00:09:40.28 yearly service. Now, the same is true of Revelation 00:09:40.38\00:09:43.95 11! So, we've noticed Daniel 8, Revelation 11, 00:09:44.08\00:09:47.45 is parallel. For 1,260 years, God allowed the 00:09:47.55\00:09:53.42 Gentiles- and the Gentiles would be equivalent to 00:09:53.52\00:09:57.43 what? To the little horn, right? To the little horn 00:09:57.53\00:10:01.40 of Daniel 7 and Daniel 8. God allowed the Gentiles 00:10:01.50\00:10:04.53 to trample the city of Jerusalem, as well as 00:10:04.63\00:10:09.37 upon the truth revealed by the two witnesses. 00:10:09.47\00:10:12.77 And then, after this period, God would begin 00:10:12.87\00:10:15.94 to what? To measure the Most Holy Place and those 00:10:16.04\00:10:19.88 who worship there. Are you seeing the parallel? 00:10:19.98\00:10:22.22 So, in Daniel chapter 8 after the trampling of 00:10:22.78\00:10:25.79 the host, the sanctuary, and taking away the daily? 00:10:25.89\00:10:28.02 and everything, the sanctuary is what? 00:10:28.12\00:10:30.36 Cleansed! In Revelation 11 after the Gentiles 00:10:30.46\00:10:33.50 trample upon the sanctuary and those who worship 00:10:33.63\00:10:36.43 there, etc., then the temple is what? Measured. 00:10:36.50\00:10:39.33 So, 'cleanse' is the same as what? 'Measure'! 00:10:40.44\00:10:44.01 Okay? Now, we continue. "Thus, there was a close 00:10:44.11\00:10:48.41 link between Daniel 8 and Revelation 11:1-2. 00:10:48.54\00:10:52.38 In Daniel 8, after the trampling of the prince, 00:10:52.51\00:10:55.98 the host, and the sanctuary for 1,260 years, the process 00:10:56.12\00:11:00.26 to cleanse the sanctuary begins. In Revelation 11, 00:11:00.39\00:11:04.39 the Gentiles trample upon Jerusalem, and 00:11:04.49\00:11:07.40 then the temple is measured." Is this point clear? The 00:11:07.50\00:11:11.80 cleansing of the sanctuary is the same as what? 00:11:11.90\00:11:14.90 As the measuring of the temple. In Daniel chapter 00:11:15.40\00:11:18.07 8, the little horn tramples upon the sanctuary, 00:11:18.17\00:11:21.28 the host, those who worship there for time, times, and 00:11:21.41\00:11:25.31 the dividing of time; in Revelation chapter 11, 00:11:25.45\00:11:28.12 the Gentiles trample upon the sanctuary, 00:11:28.22\00:11:31.05 those who worship there; and then, at the end of 00:11:31.15\00:11:33.76 that, the temple is measured. So, to cleanse 00:11:33.86\00:11:37.43 the sanctuary is the same as measuring the temple. 00:11:37.53\00:11:40.60 Now, I found this interesting statement by Albert Barnes. 00:11:41.16\00:11:45.83 Very, very interesting statement. He was not 00:11:46.30\00:11:48.97 an Adventist. Of course, he's an old commentator. 00:11:49.04\00:11:52.44 I like the old commentators, because they commentate 00:11:52.54\00:11:54.48 on the Bible; they don't add a bunch of psychological 00:11:54.58\00:11:56.91 and self-help things. They actually deal with 00:11:57.01\00:12:01.92 the biblical text. He almost sounds like an 00:12:02.02\00:12:05.19 Adventist here. Notice, "This, as we have seen, 00:12:05.29\00:12:09.92 would properly mean that a separation was to be 00:12:10.86\00:12:13.50 made between what was the true Church and what 00:12:13.60\00:12:17.37 was not," this is the measuring of the temple, 00:12:17.47\00:12:20.50 by the way, "though it might seem to belong 00:12:20.60\00:12:23.24 to it." [chuckles] So what is he saying? 00:12:23.30\00:12:26.27 He's saying that the measuring of the temple 00:12:26.84\00:12:28.28 means a separation was to be made between the 00:12:29.64\00:12:32.35 true Church and what was not the true Church, 00:12:32.45\00:12:35.68 though the false church might seem to belong to 00:12:37.02\00:12:40.62 the true Church. Are you with me? In other words, 00:12:40.72\00:12:43.93 there's gonna be a separation between 00:12:43.99\00:12:45.39 true believers and counterfeit believers. 00:12:45.49\00:12:48.33 That's what the measuring of the temple is all about. 00:12:48.43\00:12:50.67 He continues. "The one was to be measured or 00:12:51.17\00:12:54.04 estimated; the other was to be left out as 00:12:54.14\00:12:57.11 not pertaining to that or as belonging to the 00:12:57.21\00:13:00.51 Gentiles or to," what? "Paganism. The idea 00:13:00.61\00:13:04.78 would be that though it professedly pertained 00:13:04.91\00:13:08.28 to the true Church and to the worship of God, 00:13:08.42\00:13:11.79 however that it deserved to be characterized as," 00:13:11.85\00:13:15.32 what? "Paganism. Now, this will apply with great 00:13:15.42\00:13:19.13 propriety, according to all Protestant notions." 00:13:19.19\00:13:23.06 Not these days, by the way, folks; in his day. 00:13:23.13\00:13:26.94 "Now, this will apply with great propriety 00:13:27.04\00:13:29.54 according to all Protestant [notions] to the manner in 00:13:29.60\00:13:32.64 which the," what? "...the papacy was regarded 00:13:32.74\00:13:35.81 by the reformers and should be regarded at 00:13:35.91\00:13:38.91 all times. It claimed to be the true Church." 00:13:38.98\00:13:42.95 Is he talking about the little horn? [Yes.] 00:13:43.99\00:13:46.49 [chuckles] He doesn't know it. [laughter] 00:13:46.55\00:13:50.39 But thank you very much. "It claimed to be the 00:13:50.46\00:13:54.00 true Church. And to the eye of an observer, it 00:13:54.13\00:13:58.20 would seem to belong to it..." Are you understanding 00:13:58.30\00:14:00.60 what the Gentiles are here? [audience approves] 00:14:00.67\00:14:03.14 "...as much as the outer court seemed to pertain 00:14:03.24\00:14:06.31 to the temple. However, it had the essential 00:14:06.37\00:14:09.34 characteristics of," what? "Paganism, and was, 00:14:09.44\00:14:13.48 therefore, properly to be left out or cast out 00:14:13.55\00:14:16.55 as not pertaining to the true Church." And 00:14:16.62\00:14:20.92 then, he continues with this amazing statement: 00:14:21.02\00:14:24.69 "Can anyone doubt the truth of this representation 00:14:25.23\00:14:28.36 as applicable to the papacy? Almost everything 00:14:28.46\00:14:32.53 that was unique in the ancient pagan systems 00:14:32.63\00:14:35.60 of religion had been introduced into the 00:14:35.67\00:14:38.51 Roman communion, and a stranger at Rome would 00:14:38.57\00:14:41.98 see more that would lead him to feel that he was in 00:14:42.04\00:14:45.45 a pagan land, that he was in a land where 00:14:45.51\00:14:49.42 the pure doctrines of Christianity prevailed 00:14:49.48\00:14:52.39 and where the worship was celebrated, which 00:14:52.45\00:14:56.39 the Redeemer hath designed to set up on the earth. 00:14:56.46\00:14:59.09 This was true, not only in the pomp and splendor 00:14:59.63\00:15:02.83 of worship and in the processions and imposing 00:15:02.90\00:15:06.23 ceremonials, but in the worship of images and the 00:15:06.30\00:15:09.27 homage rendered to the dead in the number of 00:15:09.34\00:15:11.81 festival days, and the fact that the statues 00:15:11.91\00:15:13.78 reared in pagan Rome to the honor of gods, 00:15:13.88\00:15:16.04 had been re-consecrated in the service of Christian 00:15:16.14\00:15:18.85 devotion to the apostles, saints, and martyrs, and 00:15:18.95\00:15:22.38 in the robes of the Christian priesthood, derived from 00:15:22.42\00:15:25.52 those in use in the ancient pagan worship! [chuckles] 00:15:25.59\00:15:29.86 Are you understanding the point? The papacy 00:15:30.43\00:15:33.50 claimed to be a true religion. The little horn 00:15:33.56\00:15:35.36 claimed to serve the Lord...but it wasn't. 00:15:35.40\00:15:40.17 He continues, "The direction was that in estimating the 00:15:41.17\00:15:45.24 true Church"... What does that mean, 'estimating'? 00:15:45.31\00:15:48.44 What would be a synonymous term? [Judging.] Judging! That's 00:15:48.48\00:15:51.98 right. In estimating the true Church, this 00:15:52.01\00:15:55.05 was to be left out or cast out. So what is 00:15:55.12\00:15:57.65 it that is not measured at the end of the 42 months? 00:15:57.72\00:16:01.56 Those who professed to be servants of Christ, 00:16:02.82\00:16:05.96 but were not. So once again, the direction was 00:16:05.99\00:16:11.10 that, in estimating the true Church, this was 00:16:11.13\00:16:13.34 to be left out or cast out. And if this interpretation 00:16:13.40\00:16:16.94 is correct, the meaning is that the Roman Catholic 00:16:17.01\00:16:20.58 Communion, as an organized body, is to be regarded 00:16:20.64\00:16:24.25 as no part of the true Church. "A conclusion 00:16:24.28\00:16:27.95 which is inevitable: If the passages of Scripture, 00:16:27.98\00:16:31.32 which are commonly supposed by Protestants to apply to 00:16:31.35\00:16:34.06 it, are correctly applied. To determine this and to 00:16:34.12\00:16:38.49 separate the true Church from it was no small part 00:16:38.53\00:16:43.37 of the work of the Reformation." So, he says that the separation 00:16:43.43\00:16:46.23 was done at the Reformation. That's where he goes 00:16:46.30\00:16:48.30 off-track. Where's the separation done? It's 00:16:48.40\00:16:53.11 after the 1,260 days, and it's done in the 00:16:53.17\00:16:55.71 heavenly sanctuary in the investigative judgment. 00:16:55.78\00:16:58.45 But is he pretty much on target in what he 00:16:59.05\00:17:01.42 wrote? You better believe it. No Protestant would 00:17:01.48\00:17:03.95 write that today, because we're living in different 00:17:03.99\00:17:06.65 times; we're living in politically-correct times. 00:17:06.72\00:17:09.96 Let's continue. In Revelation 11:1, 00:17:10.03\00:17:14.00 the angel transported John in vision to 1844 00:17:14.63\00:17:19.73 and told him to measure the temple and those 00:17:20.50\00:17:24.44 who worship there. This is the verse that belongs 00:17:24.51\00:17:27.24 with chapter 10, verse 1 of chapter 11. So, the 00:17:27.28\00:17:31.01 angel told John to measure the temple and those who 00:17:31.11\00:17:34.42 worship there. However, the angel also told him, in 00:17:34.48\00:17:38.15 verse 2, not to measure the court where the 00:17:38.22\00:17:41.72 Gentiles worshiped, because it had been 00:17:41.76\00:17:44.53 given-listen-not will be given, but it had 00:17:44.66\00:17:49.93 been given to them. Once again, let's go 00:17:50.00\00:17:55.70 back. Not will be given to them from 1844 forward, 00:17:55.77\00:17:59.37 but rather had been given to them from when forward? 00:17:59.44\00:18:03.14 From 538 A.D. forward. The best translation 00:18:03.68\00:18:07.35 of the Greek word 'edothe', which is 'given', is a 00:18:07.42\00:18:12.45 first aorist-that's a past tense-passive 00:18:12.52\00:18:15.89 indicative. Somebody else is giving this to 00:18:16.62\00:18:19.33 the power that is doing this. So, the best translation 00:18:21.36\00:18:25.43 of the Greek word 'edothe' is 'was given'. It is worthy 00:18:25.50\00:18:30.87 of note-and this is significant. I looked 00:18:30.94\00:18:34.64 up the appearances of this word in the NIV, 00:18:34.71\00:18:38.51 and every other appearance of this word in the NIV is 00:18:39.01\00:18:43.02 translated, "was given". Only in this one instance 00:18:43.08\00:18:47.96 does the NIV translate the aorist passive as a 00:18:48.06\00:18:50.99 perfect tense, "has been given". That's a significant 00:18:51.03\00:18:54.70 difference. Now, let's continue. The tense of 00:18:54.76\00:18:58.70 the verb clearly indicates this is a very important 00:18:58.77\00:19:01.60 paragraph that God gave the court to the Gentiles 00:19:01.64\00:19:05.01 when? After the process of measuring begins or 00:19:05.87\00:19:09.91 before? [Before.] Before the process of measuring 00:19:09.94\00:19:13.95 the temple began. Stated another way, God gave 00:19:14.02\00:19:18.55 the court to the Gentiles. They would then trample 00:19:18.62\00:19:22.49 the Holy City for 42 months, and then the 00:19:22.56\00:19:26.19 angel told John to measure the temple and its worshipers. 00:19:26.26\00:19:30.10 Are you understanding this point? This helps explain how end-time Babylon 00:24:57.36\00:25:01.30 will receive double of what she what? Of what she 00:25:01.40\00:25:04.80 gave. She trampled upon God's people, and God, 00:25:04.83\00:25:07.94 in turn, will trample upon her. Boy, he must've had 00:25:54.85\00:25:58.89 some real cards to take Jerusalem captive. [chuckles] 00:25:58.95\00:26:03.12 What does that mean when it says that he took Jerusalem 00:26:05.36\00:26:07.43 captive? Those are the words that are used. 00:26:07.50\00:26:09.36 Did he take the physical city captive? No! He did 00:26:10.47\00:26:14.27 not take the physical city of Babylon captive, 00:26:14.34\00:26:16.81 but the what? The citizens of the city! The trampling 00:26:16.84\00:26:21.14 of the city by the Gentiles for 42 months is the same 00:26:21.21\00:26:24.31 as the persecuting of the saints in Daniel chapter 00:26:24.38\00:26:27.62 7. Is that point clear? The Gentiles trampling 00:26:27.68\00:26:31.32 on the Holy City 42 months is the same thing as the 00:26:31.39\00:26:34.82 little horn persecuting the saints for time, times, 00:26:34.89\00:26:37.53 and the dividing of time. The Gentiles are those 00:26:37.56\00:26:41.66 who are not true what? True Jews. What is a 00:26:41.73\00:26:45.97 true Jew? What is a counterfeit Jew? A 00:26:46.03\00:26:51.91 counterfeit Jew is an individual who claims 00:26:52.01\00:26:55.74 to be a follower of Christ but is a counterfeit follower 00:26:55.81\00:26:59.21 of Christ. What is a Jew, by the way? If 00:26:59.25\00:27:04.15 you are Christ's, you are Abraham's seed. 00:27:04.19\00:27:06.96 It is not of the children of flesh that are the 00:27:08.16\00:27:09.99 children of God, but the children who have 00:27:10.03\00:27:13.23 the Holy Spirit. So, in other words, the 00:27:13.29\00:27:16.63 Gentiles are those who are not true Jews, or 00:27:16.70\00:27:19.93 true believers, but rather counterfeit Jews or 00:27:20.04\00:27:23.07 counterfeit believers. These counterfeit believers 00:27:23.10\00:27:26.17 are not judged in 1844. Who only is judged from 00:27:26.24\00:27:30.48 1844 on? Only those individuals who-yes- 00:27:30.55\00:27:36.58 all who have professed Christ, sure, but the purpose of 00:27:36.65\00:27:39.75 the judgement is to separate what? True 00:27:39.82\00:27:42.79 believers from what? Counterfeit believers. 00:27:42.86\00:27:45.46 By the way, are the counterfeit believers 00:27:45.53\00:27:47.23 judged at that particular moment? Ellen White says 00:27:48.40\00:27:50.40 no. But she says if there's a person who 00:27:50.47\00:27:52.53 claimed to believe in Christ but the records 00:27:52.63\00:27:55.67 show that they were not true believers, 00:27:55.74\00:27:57.47 their case is put aside to be dealt with during 00:27:57.54\00:28:00.74 the millennium. So the purpose of the judgment, 00:28:00.78\00:28:04.45 beginning in 1844, is for Christ to reveal 00:28:04.95\00:28:07.38 who are members of His Kingdom. Now, let's continue here. 00:28:12.72\00:28:15.96 These counterfeit believers are not judged in 1844, 00:28:16.49\00:28:20.36 but only the righteous. In Daniel 7 and 8, the 00:28:21.36\00:28:24.73 central focus of the judgment is not on the 00:28:24.80\00:28:26.47 condemnation of the little horn, but on the 00:28:26.53\00:28:29.60 what? On the rewarding of the saints who receive 00:28:29.67\00:28:32.87 the Kingdom along with Jesus. Or good paraphrase? Absolutely. 00:29:42.74\00:29:46.01 The message, which is also a paraphrase, 00:29:46.55\00:29:48.75 translates, "It," that is, the court, "has been 00:29:48.82\00:29:52.39 handed over to non- Jewish outsiders." 00:29:52.45\00:29:55.56 [chuckles] Now, let's continue. Let's read 00:29:55.62\00:30:00.60 another statement by Albert Barnes. "This would find 00:30:00.66\00:30:05.07 a fulfillment if there should arise a state 00:30:05.13\00:30:07.84 of things in the church in which it would be 00:30:07.90\00:30:10.94 necessary to draw a line," a line where? The interpretation 00:30:38.27\00:30:41.64 would demand that they should sustain some relation 00:30:41.70\00:30:44.64 to the church or that they would seem to 00:30:44.71\00:30:47.48 belong to it, as the court did to the temple, 00:30:47.54\00:30:50.71 but still that this was in appearance only and 00:30:51.15\00:30:55.22 that in estimating the true Church, it was 00:30:55.28\00:30:58.19 necessary to lead them out altogether." So, Albert 00:30:58.25\00:31:02.32 Barnes is right on target here. He's talking about 00:31:02.39\00:31:05.26 the judgment separating people who are in the 00:31:05.36\00:31:07.96 Church: those who are true believers from those 00:31:08.03\00:31:11.40 who are counterfeit believers. So are we 00:31:11.47\00:31:15.17 doing well? You understand this point? Critical point 00:31:15.24\00:31:19.94 for what we're gonna talk about when we 00:31:20.01\00:31:21.54 deal with Revelation chapter 10, because Revelation 00:31:21.61\00:31:23.91 chapter 10 is talking about the announcement 00:31:23.98\00:31:26.28 of the beginning of the investigative judgment 00:31:26.38\00:31:28.15 in 1844. Now, let's continue here with 00:31:28.22\00:31:33.05 the comments on Revelation 11:3. All of our comments 00:31:33.15\00:31:36.32 so far have been on Revelation chapter 11:2. 00:31:36.39\00:31:40.33 Now, let's go to 11:3. Now, what's gonna happen 00:31:40.40\00:31:44.00 here is, it's gonna go back and it's gonna 00:31:44.07\00:31:49.07 talk about what the Gentiles did during the 00:31:49.10\00:31:52.67 1,260 years. Are you with me or not? So, 00:31:52.71\00:31:57.85 it's been introduced, don't measure the court, 00:31:57.91\00:32:01.28 because it was given to the Gentiles. Now let's go to the next section, 00:37:45.93\00:37:47.93 The Two Act as One. Although there are 00:37:47.96\00:37:51.53 two witnesses, they act as one. In perfect unison, 00:37:51.63\00:37:55.90 they testify-we're gonna find this as we study along- 00:37:56.54\00:37:59.67 they testify together, they pour out plagues 00:37:59.74\00:38:02.01 together, they suffer persecution together, 00:38:02.08\00:38:04.31 the beast from the bottomless pit kills 00:38:04.35\00:38:06.55 them together, they resurrect together, 00:38:06.61\00:38:09.08 and they ascend to heaven together. Now, here's 00:38:20.03\00:38:24.63 an interesting detail: Revelation 11:8 uses 00:38:24.70\00:38:28.10 the singular word 'body' in a collective sense for 00:38:28.17\00:38:32.41 both witnesses. Revelation chapter 11 and verse 8. 00:38:37.75\00:38:41.92 Even though there are two, it's referred to as 00:38:42.68\00:38:45.22 one body. 11:8 says- and the translation 00:38:45.25\00:38:50.09 says, "bodies", but the literal Greek has 'body'- 00:38:50.19\00:38:54.36 [reads text] 00:38:54.70\00:38:57.27 So you can check that out in the original Greek. 00:38:58.43\00:39:00.57 So Revelation 11:8 uses the singular 'body' in a 00:39:01.10\00:39:04.31 collective sense for both witnesses. In verse 9, 00:39:04.41\00:39:07.58 the word 'body' appears once more in the singular 00:39:07.71\00:39:10.21 before the Greek switches, then, later to plural. 00:39:11.11\00:39:14.05 The same thing happens in verse 5 with reference 00:39:14.62\00:39:18.45 to the word 'mouth' which is singular. They're both 00:39:18.55\00:39:22.49 speaking, but the word 'mouth' is used in verse 5. 00:39:22.59\00:39:26.53 "Thus, although the witnesses are two 00:39:27.20\00:39:28.80 in number, they speak as," what? "...as one." 00:39:28.90\00:39:32.90 And the text refers to them as one. They are 00:39:33.44\00:39:37.14 one because they have a common purpose: To 00:39:37.24\00:39:40.08 reveal the one and only Jesus Christ. So, this 00:39:40.21\00:39:44.71 expresses the unity of Scripture-of the Old and 00:39:44.78\00:39:48.42 New Testament. Now, the two witnesses, what do 00:39:48.48\00:39:53.09 they do? They prophesy. So, I'll let you read 00:39:53.15\00:39:58.46 1 Peter chapter 1:10-12 because time is advancing. 00:39:58.56\00:40:02.70 This is a comment on the fact that the two witnesses 00:40:03.20\00:40:06.97 prophesy, so they must be what? They must be 00:40:07.07\00:40:10.57 prophets. To whom do the prophets point? 00:40:10.67\00:40:13.51 The prophets point to Jesus! To the one Jesus. 00:40:15.51\00:40:20.35 The Old Testament prophets and the New Testament 00:40:20.88\00:40:23.08 prophets point to Christ, and you can notice that 00:40:23.18\00:40:25.99 here. I have explanations in brackets in this passage 00:40:26.09\00:40:29.62 from 1 Peter chapter 1:10-12, so let's talk about the 00:40:29.72\00:40:33.50 Moses and Elijah theme. These two witnesses are 00:40:33.56\00:40:38.03 not two ordinary prophets. The context clearly 00:40:38.13\00:40:42.44 indicates that the two prophets function in the 00:40:42.54\00:40:46.47 power and spirit of whom? Of Moses and Elijah. 00:40:46.57\00:40:51.98 This is made clear by the fact that Moses 00:40:53.01\00:40:55.18 brought a judgment against the Egyptians for rejecting 00:40:55.28\00:41:00.12 God's Word. And what did Moses do? He turned 00:41:00.22\00:41:03.53 the waters of the Nile into blood. We're gonna 00:41:03.66\00:41:06.09 notice that this is exactly what the witnesses 00:41:06.16\00:41:08.50 do. And Elijah brought a judgment of what? 00:41:08.60\00:41:12.93 Of fire down from heaven for the same reason. So, 00:41:13.44\00:41:17.44 you have an illusion here to Moses and Elijah. 00:41:17.57\00:41:19.84 And by the way, futurists, those who believe in the 00:41:19.94\00:41:23.81 rapture of the Church and end-time tribulation, 00:41:23.91\00:41:27.38 the rebuilding of the temple, they say that 00:41:27.48\00:41:29.15 God is gonna send literal Moses and Elijah to preach 00:41:29.25\00:41:33.12 during the tribulation. That is not what Revelation 00:41:33.19\00:41:37.19 11 is telling us. Let's continue. Does this mean 00:41:37.33\00:41:42.26 that Moses and Elijah would appear literally and 00:41:42.36\00:41:44.90 personally during the 1,260 years? Of course not. 00:41:45.00\00:41:49.50 Not any more than Jezebel reappears in the fourth 00:41:50.01\00:41:53.61 church and Balaam appears in the third church! 00:41:53.71\00:41:56.54 You're dealing with symbols here. "Moses and Elijah" 00:41:56.64\00:41:59.91 are symbolic. (x2) Moses was the prophet 00:42:00.02\00:42:04.75 that began the history of Israel, thus being the 00:42:04.85\00:42:07.96 giant spokesman of the what? Of the old dispensation, 00:42:08.06\00:42:12.49 or the Old Testament. On the other hand, Elijah 00:42:12.99\00:42:15.80 was the prophet of the future! John the Baptist, 00:42:15.90\00:42:19.73 Jesus said, was the New Testament Elijah. 00:42:19.87\00:42:23.17 And at the end of time, there will be a final 00:42:23.67\00:42:25.61 Elijah. So, "Elijah" is the prophet of 00:42:25.71\00:42:28.14 the future! John was the last prophet of the old 00:42:28.24\00:42:30.95 dispensation and announced the fulfillment of the Old 00:42:31.01\00:42:34.12 Testament prophecies in Jesus. The gospels 00:42:34.22\00:42:37.12 identify John the Baptist as Elijah who bore witness 00:42:37.19\00:42:40.62 to Jesus who is the light. And we also read that the 00:42:40.72\00:42:45.49 last book of the Old Testament brings to 00:42:45.59\00:42:47.90 view that in the future, there will be another 00:42:48.00\00:42:50.70 what? There will be another Elijah. Not 00:42:50.77\00:42:54.70 in person; it is an Elijah movement...the Remnant 00:42:54.80\00:42:58.54 Church that will preach the same message that 00:42:58.67\00:43:01.71 Elijah preached. Thus, the two witnesses 00:43:01.78\00:43:04.88 represent what? Moses and Elijah - the Old 00:43:04.98\00:43:08.25 and the New Testament. Now, let's go to the next 00:43:08.32\00:43:12.62 section: "The Word of God and the Testimony 00:43:12.72\00:43:14.69 of Jesus"(x2). This adds further information 00:43:14.79\00:43:20.83 to what we've been discussing. Revelation 1:2 further 00:43:20.93\00:43:25.63 corroborates that the two witnesses represent 00:43:25.73\00:43:27.84 the Old and New Testaments. This verse tells us that 00:43:27.94\00:43:31.31 John bore witness to two things - to what? 00:43:31.41\00:43:35.74 To the Word of God, and the testimony of 00:43:36.31\00:43:39.25 Jesus Christ. In fact, John was on Patmos 00:43:39.38\00:43:42.88 for bearing witness to the Word of God and 00:43:42.98\00:43:45.75 the testimony of Jesus Christ. The martyrs- 00:43:45.85\00:43:48.82 by the way, the word 'martyr' means 'witness'- 00:43:49.36\00:43:52.79 the martyrs of the Dark Ages and the end times 00:43:53.66\00:43:56.56 suffered and will suffer death because of their 00:43:56.67\00:44:00.04 faithfulness in proclaiming what? The Word of God 00:44:00.17\00:44:03.37 and the testimony of Jesus Christ. Hebrews 00:44:04.27\00:44:07.34 1:1 states that God spoke in old times by the prophets, 00:44:07.44\00:44:11.78 but in these last days has spoken by the Son; 00:44:12.38\00:44:15.05 that's Old Testament and New Testament. 00:44:15.58\00:44:17.49 Jesus stated that there were two witnesses to 00:44:18.02\00:44:20.26 His divine calling: the Father, and Himself. 00:44:20.36\00:44:23.32 Kenneth Strand, who was a teacher in the seminary 00:44:23.79\00:44:27.26 at Andrews when I was there, I believe correctly 00:44:27.36\00:44:30.33 wrote here, "These two witnesses are, namely, 00:44:30.43\00:44:34.60 the Word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ, 00:44:35.14\00:44:37.61 or what we today would call the Old Testament 00:44:38.21\00:44:41.68 prophetic message and the New Testament apostolic 00:44:42.31\00:44:45.61 witness to Jesus Christ. The Bible describes God's 00:44:45.78\00:44:50.82 scriptural message in terms of two sums: 00:44:50.92\00:44:53.82 The Bible is one book, a unity composed of 00:44:54.52\00:44:58.96 two parts." The Bible is a two-edged what? 00:44:59.06\00:45:03.50 [Sword.] Why two edges? 00:45:04.03\00:45:05.97 The Bible is represented by two witnesses! Two 00:45:10.91\00:45:14.51 candlesticks. Two olive trees. Two keys! You 00:45:14.64\00:45:20.62 say, "What do you mean, 'two keys'?" Well, Jesus 00:45:20.68\00:45:23.02 said to Peter, "I will give you the," what? 00:45:23.12\00:45:24.65 "...keys, without a qualifier. The dual...two! 00:45:25.22\00:45:29.72 "I will give you the keys." Moses and Elijah - 00:45:29.82\00:45:33.19 once again, a twosome: the Word of God, and 00:45:33.29\00:45:35.50 the testimony of Jesus Christ. Are you understanding 00:45:35.56\00:45:37.47 that the two witnesses are the Bible? Two, but 00:45:37.57\00:45:42.50 one, because they give witness to Jesus Christ. 00:45:42.60\00:45:45.47 Ellen White, at the top of page 191, had this 00:45:45.97\00:45:51.01 very appropriate comment. "The two witnesses represent 00:45:51.11\00:45:54.45 the scriptures of the Old and New Testament. 00:45:54.55\00:45:56.99 Both are important testimonies to the origin and perpetuity 00:45:57.45\00:46:02.52 of the law of God. Both are witnesses also to 00:46:02.62\00:46:06.59 the plan of salvation." Is she speaking about 00:46:06.70\00:46:08.60 the unity of the Testaments? Yes. "The types, sacrifices, 00:46:08.66\00:46:12.63 and prophecies of the Old Testament point 00:46:12.73\00:46:15.14 forward to a Saviour to come. The gospels 00:46:15.24\00:46:17.87 and epistles of the New Testament tell of a 00:46:17.97\00:46:20.21 Saviour who has come in the exact manner 00:46:20.31\00:46:23.51 foretold by type and prophecy." So, she's explicit that the 00:46:23.61\00:46:29.28 two witnesses are the Old and New Testament. 00:46:29.38\00:46:32.82 The Old Testament and the New Testament are 00:46:33.96\00:46:36.46 two distinct Testaments, but they bear witness 00:46:36.56\00:46:39.49 to the one Jesus. Although they are two, they give 00:46:39.59\00:46:43.06 witness to the one. The Old Testament gives 00:46:43.13\00:46:45.63 witness to Jesus, and you have all of those 00:46:45.70\00:46:47.54 texts there in parentheses, as does the New. In fact, 00:46:47.64\00:46:51.84 the reason why John wrote His gospel was to give 00:46:51.94\00:46:54.44 witness to Jesus. So, the New Testament was written 00:46:54.54\00:46:56.85 to give witness to Jesus, as well. Now, let's talk 00:46:56.95\00:47:00.08 about the sackcloth. These two witnesses, 00:47:00.18\00:47:03.82 they prophesy how? The Old and New Testament 00:47:03.92\00:47:07.32 prophesy...openly, with full freedom! [laughter] 00:47:07.39\00:47:11.89 No! They testify during- what period are we 00:47:11.99\00:47:16.30 talking about? During the 42 months. What 00:47:16.40\00:47:19.93 period is that? The period of papal dominion. Which 00:47:20.00\00:47:22.97 trumpet is that? The fourth trumpet? Are 00:47:23.04\00:47:25.84 you seeing the sequence? Now, let's talk about the 00:47:25.94\00:47:28.44 sackcloth. In Scripture, God's people use sackcloth 00:47:28.54\00:47:32.51 when the wicked persecute them. Sackcloth also 00:47:32.58\00:47:36.79 represents the darkness of error in persecution 00:47:36.89\00:47:41.92 and affliction. For example, when the 00:47:42.02\00:47:45.19 king of Assyria came with the intention to 00:47:45.29\00:47:47.03 destroy Jerusalem, what did King Hezekiah do? 00:47:47.13\00:47:50.73 Notice the highlighted portions, because we 00:47:51.33\00:47:53.40 don't have the time to read all of these verses. 00:47:53.50\00:47:55.44 What did he do? He tore his clothes, and he covered 00:47:55.54\00:47:58.64 himself with what? With sackcloth. And then it's 00:47:58.81\00:48:01.81 repeated once again in verse 3, he covered it- 00:48:01.91\00:48:04.41 at the end of verse 2, rather-he covered 00:48:04.48\00:48:06.85 himself with sackcloth. Why? Because he's gonna 00:48:06.95\00:48:10.75 suffer persecution! There's a time of crisis, 00:48:10.85\00:48:14.12 a time of trouble. Remember the book of Esther, when a 00:48:14.26\00:48:18.09 decree was given to destroy all the Jews? What did 00:48:18.23\00:48:21.43 Mordecai do? Not only he, but also, eventually, 00:48:21.53\00:48:25.07 all of Israel. Well, he tore his clothes! And 00:48:25.13\00:48:28.50 what did he do? He put on...sackcloth and ashes! 00:48:28.60\00:48:31.57 And then verse 2, once again, emphasizes that 00:48:32.14\00:48:34.34 he was clothed with sackcloth. And what is 00:48:34.44\00:48:36.78 he doing? And the Jews, what are they doing? 00:48:36.88\00:48:39.81 There was great mourning among the Jews, and 00:48:39.95\00:48:42.45 there was fasting and weeping and wailing, and they clothed 00:48:42.52\00:48:46.76 themselves with sackcloth and ashes. Are you catching 00:48:46.89\00:48:49.12 the picture? So, how did the two witnesses 00:48:49.22\00:48:51.73 testify during the 42 months? Openly, right? 00:48:51.86\00:48:56.33 With full freedom. No! They're prophesying 00:48:56.87\00:49:00.50 in distress-in pain, in anguish-because 00:49:00.60\00:49:05.01 they're being persecuted. By the way, also, 00:49:05.14\00:49:08.34 sackcloth, the emphasis of sackcloth is upon darkness- 00:49:09.31\00:49:12.78 obscurity. Notice Isaiah 50:3... [text on-screen] 00:49:13.85\00:49:19.79 There's a synonymous parallelism with blackness... 00:49:20.36\00:49:22.92 [continues reading] 00:49:23.26\00:49:25.83 So, blackness is identified with what? Sackcloth. 00:49:26.66\00:49:30.17 And of course, Revelation 6:12, "I looked when 00:49:31.03\00:49:34.80 he opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was 00:49:34.90\00:49:36.94 a great earthquake, and the sun became black as 00:49:37.01\00:49:39.41 sackcloth." So, sackcloth also represents obscurity. 00:49:39.51\00:49:43.28 Did Ellen White tell us that the two witnesses 00:49:43.68\00:49:45.81 prophesied in obscurity during the 1,260 years? 00:49:45.91\00:49:49.78 Absolutely. Now, let's read some statements 00:49:50.25\00:49:52.85 here from the Spirit of Prophecy. "Not only 00:49:52.99\00:49:56.09 is Satan leading the world captive, but 00:49:56.19\00:49:59.09 his deceptions are leavening the professed churches of 00:49:59.16\00:50:02.60 our Lord Jesus Christ. The Great Apostasy will 00:50:02.66\00:50:07.30 develop into darkness deep as midnight, 00:50:07.40\00:50:10.64 impenetrable as sackcloth of hair." Are you understanding 00:50:11.14\00:50:15.38 what the sackcloth of hair represents? It represents 00:50:15.48\00:50:17.55 what? Darkness deep as midnight, because of 00:50:17.65\00:50:20.32 a great apostasy. To God's people, it will be 00:50:20.42\00:50:24.39 a night of what? Oh, the sackcloth not only 00:50:24.52\00:50:28.09 represents error, but it also represents the fact 00:50:28.22\00:50:31.99 that there's gonna be a what? Trial. A night 00:50:32.09\00:50:35.36 of what? Weeping. A night of persecution for the 00:50:35.46\00:50:41.40 true saint. However, out of that night of 00:50:41.54\00:50:44.97 darkness, God's light will shine. [Amen.] 00:50:45.07\00:50:49.98 Notice the next statement. "The Great Apostasy is 00:50:51.88\00:50:55.38 working to a point and will develop into," what? 00:50:55.48\00:50:58.85 "...darkness deep as midnight, impenetrable 00:50:59.69\00:51:03.19 as sackcloth of hair. This is the time employ 00:51:03.26\00:51:06.96 any system that can be devised to discover and 00:51:08.03\00:51:10.70 counteract the leaven of," what? "...error." 00:51:10.73\00:51:13.60 So what do the two witnesses do? They 00:51:14.14\00:51:15.90 rebuke what? Error. "Let there be light. 00:51:16.00\00:51:19.71 There should be 100 light-bearers in our 00:51:20.54\00:51:22.74 world where there is one today. Darkness 00:51:22.84\00:51:26.21 will become more dense in human minds after 00:51:26.35\00:51:29.02 the truth has penetrated and been rejected. However, 00:51:29.15\00:51:32.75 there are some minds where the darkness will 00:51:32.85\00:51:35.42 be," what? "...will be removed." Ellen White 00:51:35.52\00:51:40.36 saw a deeper dimension to the two witnesses 00:51:40.43\00:51:42.56 than the Old and New Testaments. She discerned 00:51:42.63\00:51:45.50 that represent the church that preaches from these 00:51:45.53\00:51:49.17 two Testaments. As a result, the proclaimers 00:51:49.20\00:51:52.17 suffer persecution. In other words, the two 00:51:52.21\00:51:55.01 witnesses testify through the medium of the Holy 00:51:55.08\00:51:58.01 Spirit who empowers the Church, and the result 00:51:58.08\00:52:01.08 is what? Persecution. Did John of Patmos 00:52:01.15\00:52:04.09 go through this experience? [Yes.] Here's a person 00:52:04.15\00:52:07.29 that went through this experience. The Roman 00:52:07.32\00:52:11.23 Empire exiled John to Patmos, why? For the 00:52:11.29\00:52:15.73 Word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ! 00:52:15.76\00:52:18.03 God gave the book of Revelation to Jesus, 00:52:19.27\00:52:21.17 Jesus to the Spirit, the Spirit to the angel, 00:52:21.20\00:52:23.44 the angel to John, John to the churches, and the 00:52:23.51\00:52:26.11 churches to the world! The seven candlesticks 00:52:26.14\00:52:28.54 represent the work of the Church in imparting 00:52:29.04\00:52:32.55 light. Let's read this one quotation. "Until 00:52:32.61\00:52:36.35 Christ shall appear in the clouds of heaven 00:52:36.42\00:52:38.09 with power and great glory, men will become 00:52:38.15\00:52:40.86 perverse in spirit and turn from the truth to 00:52:40.92\00:52:43.46 fables. The Church will yet see troublest times. 00:52:43.53\00:52:48.06 She will," what? "...prophesy in sackcloth. But although 00:52:48.56\00:52:52.70 she must meet heresies and persecutions, although 00:52:52.73\00:52:56.17 she must battle with the infidel and the apostate, 00:52:56.20\00:52:59.14 yet by the help of God she is bruising," what? 00:52:59.54\00:53:03.65 "...the head of Satan." And the next statement 00:53:04.05\00:53:07.35 is really significant: "God's witnesses remained 00:53:07.38\00:53:10.19 in a state of," what?- this is during the 42 months- 00:53:10.25\00:53:13.59 "in a state of obscurity," darkness. "The papal 00:53:14.02\00:53:16.96 power sought to hide from the people the 00:53:17.03\00:53:19.06 Word of truth and set before them false witnesses 00:53:19.09\00:53:21.36 to contradict its testimony. When the Bible was 00:53:21.50\00:53:24.77 proscribed by religious and secular authority, 00:53:24.83\00:53:28.00 when its testimony was perverted and every 00:53:28.07\00:53:31.01 effort made that men, demons could invent 00:53:31.07\00:53:34.14 to turn the minds of people from it, when 00:53:34.18\00:53:36.75 those who dared proclaim it sacred truths were 00:53:36.81\00:53:39.98 hunted, betrayed, tortured, buried in dungeon cells, 00:53:40.08\00:53:43.65 martyred for their faith, or compelled to flee to 00:53:44.09\00:53:46.69 mountain fastness's and to dens and caves of 00:53:46.76\00:53:49.92 the earth, then the faithful witnesses prophesied in," 00:53:49.96\00:53:54.00 what? "...prophesied in sackcloth. So, you 00:53:54.06\00:53:57.90 can't separate the proclaimers from the two witnesses 00:53:57.97\00:54:01.10 that they proclaim. Then, you have the 42 00:54:01.20\00:54:04.61 months and the 1,260 days, which are mentioned 00:54:04.67\00:54:07.58 there in Revelation 11. Verse 2 mentions 42 00:54:07.61\00:54:11.31 months, verse 3 calls it 1,260 days; it's the 00:54:11.38\00:54:16.28 same period. When do these time periods apply 00:54:16.35\00:54:20.39 to? Well, Ellen White makes it clear. Some 00:54:20.46\00:54:24.09 people are trying to make these periods 00:54:24.16\00:54:25.53 future. A few months ago, I wrote a response to 00:54:25.59\00:54:31.73 David Gates who had made some specific time 00:54:33.13\00:54:39.81 predictions about the close of probation and 00:54:39.87\00:54:42.61 the Sunday law and so on. I responded to him about 00:54:42.68\00:54:46.55 his use of the 1,260 days and the 42 months, 00:54:46.61\00:54:52.82 applying them literally to the future. By the 00:54:52.89\00:54:56.73 way, this is on our website. If you want 00:54:56.79\00:54:58.76 to read it, it's about close to 40 pages, 00:54:58.79\00:55:01.53 'cause there was a lot to respond to in the 00:55:01.96\00:55:03.77 way that he handled Scripture. But Ellen White 00:55:03.80\00:55:06.33 is explicit that these periods in Revelation 00:55:06.37\00:55:09.54 chapter 11:2-3 represent the 1,260 years of the 00:55:09.57\00:55:14.64 past dominion of the papacy! She's clear 00:55:14.71\00:55:17.58 about that. She never applies them to the future! 00:55:17.65\00:55:20.32 Notice this statement from Great Controversy 00:55:20.75\00:55:22.72 pg. 266. The periods here mentioned 42 00:55:22.85\00:55:29.49 months and 1,203 score days are the same. Are 00:55:31.73\00:55:40.07 they the same? Yes! Alike representing the time 00:55:40.17\00:55:45.97 which the Church of Christ was to suffer oppression 00:55:46.68\00:55:50.38 from Rome. The 1,260 years of papal supremacy 00:55:50.48\00:55:54.32 began when? In 538 A.D., and would therefore 00:55:54.42\00:55:59.79 terminate when? In 1798. At that time, a French 00:55:59.89\00:56:04.09 army entered Rome, made the pope a prisoner, 00:56:04.19\00:56:06.80 and he died in exile. Though a new pope 00:56:07.26\00:56:10.37 was soon afterward elected, the papal hierarchy has 00:56:10.43\00:56:13.60 never since been able to wield the power which 00:56:13.70\00:56:17.71 it before possessed. So, to which period do 00:56:17.84\00:56:21.88 the 42 months and the 1,260 days apply? 00:56:22.01\00:56:24.88 Let's not try and reinvent the wheel, folks. Ellen 00:56:26.92\00:56:30.49 White is explicit. It's not future. And we have 00:56:30.59\00:56:33.92 some notable people in the Church now that 00:56:33.99\00:56:36.32 are saying that, "Yes, it was fulfilled during 00:56:36.42\00:56:39.49 the 1,260 years of papal oppression; yes, it was 00:56:39.59\00:56:42.96 symbolic back then, but we need to reapply 00:56:43.06\00:56:45.07 this and make it a future literal time." That goes 00:56:45.20\00:56:50.71 against what Ellen White said. She said we're 00:56:50.81\00:56:52.57 not supposed to set time for prophetic events! 00:56:52.67\00:56:55.21 The last event that is marked by time is 00:56:55.78\00:56:58.15 October 22, 1844. Revelation chapter 10, 00:56:58.28\00:57:02.28 as we'll notice, says, "Time will be no longer." 00:57:02.38\00:57:04.69 And it's not talking about the end of the world; 00:57:05.72\00:57:07.36 it's not talking about the close of probation... 00:57:08.26\00:57:10.03 When Revelation says time will be no longer, 00:57:10.83\00:57:12.86 it's referring to the prophecy of the 2,300 days. That 00:57:12.96\00:57:16.16 is the last-time prophecy. There are no more prophecies 00:57:16.26\00:57:19.43 that specify specific time for prophetic 00:57:19.57\00:57:22.24 events...period.
