We are going to begin our study on page 141 00:00:16.21\00:00:19.88 in this session. 00:00:19.91\00:00:21.25 Unfortunately, we're not going to be able to cover everything 00:00:22.85\00:00:25.95 in the study notes. 00:00:25.99\00:00:27.92 We're going to skip over some things in the next few pages. 00:00:28.62\00:00:33.70 And I'll tell you exactly which ones we're going to skip. 00:00:33.73\00:00:36.30 But we do want to do what we find on pages 141 through 144. 00:00:36.33\00:00:41.80 So first of all, we're going to look at a summary 00:00:42.87\00:00:47.04 of the three woes. 00:00:47.08\00:00:48.84 You know that there are three woes that are referred to 00:00:49.68\00:00:53.82 in the trumpets. 00:00:53.85\00:00:55.18 The first woe is the fifth trumpet. 00:00:55.78\00:00:58.29 I'm summarizing. 00:00:59.35\00:01:00.69 The second woe is the sixth trumpet. 00:01:00.72\00:01:03.69 And the third woe is the seventh trumpet. 00:01:04.29\00:01:07.60 Okay? 00:01:07.63\00:01:08.96 Very simple. 00:01:09.00\00:01:10.33 Fifth trumpet, first woe; sixth trumpet, second woe; 00:01:11.80\00:01:16.00 seventh trumpet, third woe. 00:01:16.20\00:01:18.31 You say, how do we know that? 00:01:18.57\00:01:19.91 Well, let's take a look at it. 00:01:19.94\00:01:21.38 Revelation 9:1-11... 00:01:22.18\00:01:24.48 We're studying where it says, "Summary of the three woes." 00:01:25.05\00:01:29.52 Revelation 9:1-11 describe the fifth trumpet. 00:01:30.15\00:01:37.19 And then when you get to verse 12, 00:01:38.63\00:01:41.73 after the fifth trumpet, it says, "One woe is..." What? 00:01:42.26\00:01:46.43 "...is past." 00:01:47.60\00:01:48.94 So what is the first woe? 00:01:49.60\00:01:51.27 Duh. 00:01:53.11\00:01:54.44 The fifth trumpet. 00:01:54.48\00:01:55.81 But then it says, "Behold, still two more woes 00:01:57.38\00:02:01.72 are coming after these things." 00:02:02.15\00:02:04.39 So after the fifth trumpet, which is the first woe, 00:02:05.65\00:02:08.09 there's going to be two more woes. 00:02:08.12\00:02:09.69 And then I want you to notice, we're following here, 00:02:10.53\00:02:13.19 Revelation 11:2-12 is a further expansion 00:02:13.76\00:02:19.90 of the fifth trumpet. 00:02:19.93\00:02:21.37 You need to pay careful attention here. 00:02:23.14\00:02:25.47 Because there is an interlude after the fifth trumpet. 00:02:26.01\00:02:33.31 After the fifth and sixth trumpets 00:02:34.18\00:02:35.98 you have Revelation 10 and 11. 00:02:36.55\00:02:38.69 It breaks the flow. 00:02:38.92\00:02:40.66 So pay close attention to this because it's very important. 00:02:41.69\00:02:44.96 Revelation 11:2-12 is a further expansion 00:02:45.99\00:02:50.73 of the fifth trumpet and the first woe. 00:02:50.77\00:02:53.10 In your spare time this afternoon go over this 00:02:54.90\00:02:57.64 so that it gets clear in your mind. 00:02:57.94\00:02:59.64 Then Revelation 11:13 ends by saying, 00:03:00.58\00:03:06.41 "In the same hour there was a great earthquake..." 00:03:07.25\00:03:10.65 This is describing the French Revolution; France. 00:03:12.72\00:03:15.39 The word, "rest," once again, is, remnant. 00:03:21.03\00:03:24.03 It's the word, "loipos." 00:03:25.20\00:03:26.94 "...and the remnant were afraid..." 00:03:27.80\00:03:29.90 Not a good translation. 00:03:30.31\00:03:31.71 A better translation is, feared. 00:03:31.81\00:03:34.11 In the same way that the first angel's message says, 00:03:36.14\00:03:38.95 "Fear God..." 00:03:38.98\00:03:40.98 Okay? 00:03:41.02\00:03:42.35 So you have enemies in this verse. 00:03:43.05\00:03:45.25 And you also have what? 00:03:46.15\00:03:47.79 The remnant who fears. 00:03:47.82\00:03:50.09 And what do they do? 00:03:50.59\00:03:51.93 They give glory to the God of heaven. 00:03:52.73\00:03:54.83 What is this introducing? 00:03:55.96\00:03:57.53 The first angel's message. 00:03:58.37\00:03:59.90 So you see two groups there? 00:04:00.67\00:04:02.17 The enemies, and those who fear God and give glory to Him, 00:04:02.47\00:04:06.27 which are the remnant. 00:04:06.31\00:04:07.64 Following me? 00:04:08.68\00:04:10.01 Okay. Now Revelation 9:13-21, which is the sixth trumpet, 00:04:10.18\00:04:18.52 is also the second woe. 00:04:19.65\00:04:21.72 Okay? 00:04:23.36\00:04:24.69 So Revelation 9:13-21: the sixth trumpet 00:04:24.89\00:04:29.03 and the second woe. 00:04:29.06\00:04:30.43 Revelation 10:1 through 11:1 is a further expansion 00:04:32.27\00:04:37.61 of the sixth trumpet. 00:04:37.64\00:04:38.97 That's why I said, the book of Revelation 00:04:41.64\00:04:43.31 is a tricky book. 00:04:43.35\00:04:44.68 It's not in chronological order. 00:04:45.28\00:04:47.28 One of the most difficult parts of studying Revelation 00:04:48.18\00:04:50.72 is to decipher how it was organized. 00:04:50.75\00:04:53.82 Because there are cycles, and flashbacks, and foretaste. 00:04:55.36\00:04:59.63 You know, there's a way in which you can decipher it all, 00:04:59.76\00:05:02.50 but it takes serious time to study it. 00:05:02.53\00:05:07.80 So Revelation 9:13-21 is the sixth trumpet 00:05:08.30\00:05:11.61 and the second woe. 00:05:11.64\00:05:12.97 Revelation 10:1 through 11:1 is an expansion of the 00:05:13.64\00:05:20.85 sixth trumpet and the second woe. 00:05:20.88\00:05:22.98 Then, Revelation 11:15-17 is the seventh trumpet 00:05:24.72\00:05:30.03 and the third woe. 00:05:30.79\00:05:32.13 When this trumpet blows, probation closes, 00:05:33.76\00:05:36.40 the plagues fall, and the second coming of Jesus occurs. 00:05:36.90\00:05:41.07 This is further amplified in Revelation chapters 15-19. 00:05:41.94\00:05:47.41 Do you have the picture in your mind? 00:05:48.01\00:05:49.44 I'm dedicating a lot of time to this because 00:05:51.25\00:05:53.21 this is critically important for what we're going to study 00:05:53.25\00:05:56.48 in the future. 00:05:56.85\00:05:58.19 So what is the first woe? 00:05:59.22\00:06:00.79 The fifth trumpet. What is the second woe? 00:06:02.16\00:06:05.16 Sixth trumpet. What is the third woe? 00:06:05.43\00:06:08.50 The seventh trumpet. 00:06:08.86\00:06:10.20 What is an expansion of the fifth trumpet? 00:06:11.23\00:06:13.70 Revelation 11:2-12. 00:06:15.20\00:06:17.01 What is the expansion of the sixth trumpet? 00:06:17.41\00:06:19.71 Revelation 10:1 through 11:1. 00:06:20.44\00:06:23.75 11:1 really belongs with chapter 10. 00:06:23.78\00:06:25.81 We'll notice that. 00:06:25.85\00:06:27.18 And then where is the seventh trumpet expanded? 00:06:27.65\00:06:31.89 In Revelation chapters 15-19; the close of probation, 00:06:32.75\00:06:36.12 and the plagues, and the second coming of Christ. 00:06:36.49\00:06:39.23 Now what is the meaning of the word, "woe"? 00:06:39.83\00:06:42.40 It's also translated, "alas". 00:06:43.87\00:06:46.53 A word that we never use. 00:06:47.70\00:06:49.67 The Greek word, "ouai," not Hawaii, "ouai," 00:06:51.54\00:06:56.34 is an exclamatory interjection that portends... 00:06:57.58\00:07:02.78 In other words, it announces. 00:07:03.52\00:07:05.32 ...pain, calamity, suffering, and sorrow. 00:07:05.85\00:07:10.53 In fact, the Septuagint, the Greek translation 00:07:11.46\00:07:13.90 of the Old Testament and the New, uses the word to describe 00:07:13.93\00:07:19.53 the retribution that falls upon those who are 00:07:20.90\00:07:23.54 not faithful to the covenant. 00:07:23.57\00:07:25.74 And so, let's look at several uses in the Septuagint, 00:07:27.44\00:07:31.31 in the Greek translation of the Old Testament. 00:07:31.35\00:07:33.72 Isaiah 3:11 is an oracle against Jerusalem. 00:07:34.28\00:07:38.15 It's a woe against Jerusalem. 00:07:38.19\00:07:40.19 The same is true of Jeremiah 4:13, Jeremiah 10:19. 00:07:41.62\00:07:47.13 All are woes upon Jerusalem. 00:07:48.53\00:07:51.97 It's the same word, "ouai," that is found in the New Testament 00:07:52.37\00:07:56.50 in the Greek Old Testament. 00:07:56.54\00:07:58.04 In Jeremiah 50:27 you have a woe or an oracle against Babylon. 00:07:58.87\00:08:04.58 Ezekiel 2:10 you have a woe or an oracle against Jerusalem. 00:08:05.48\00:08:10.65 In Nahum 3:1-4 there is a woe upon Nineveh. 00:08:11.49\00:08:15.99 And in Zephaniah 3:1-4 you have a woe upon Jerusalem. 00:08:17.19\00:08:21.40 And then you find a description of the destruction 00:08:21.43\00:08:25.17 and the chaos that comes as a result. 00:08:25.20\00:08:27.44 Finally, Zechariah 11:7 from the LXX, or the Septuagint, 00:08:28.60\00:08:35.34 is an oracle against, or a woe against the false shepherds. 00:08:35.74\00:08:39.91 How is the word used in the New Testament, 00:08:40.95\00:08:43.55 the word, "ouai"? 00:08:43.59\00:08:44.92 The word is used in Matthew 18:7, woe to he 00:08:45.59\00:08:49.46 who mistreats a child. 00:08:49.49\00:08:51.13 It's like tying a great big rock around your neck 00:08:52.89\00:08:55.90 and being thrown into the sea. 00:08:55.93\00:08:57.63 In Matthew 23 you have the woes on the scribes and Pharisees. 00:09:00.14\00:09:04.21 "Woe to you scribes and Pharisees..." 00:09:04.24\00:09:06.64 And then He says, "Who's going to deliver you from hell?" 00:09:07.28\00:09:09.94 So, "woe," is something very serious is going to come. 00:09:10.88\00:09:14.45 Matthew 24:19 says, woe to those who 00:09:15.02\00:09:18.49 are alive in the final tribulation. 00:09:18.52\00:09:20.49 Matthew 26:24, woe to the one who betrays the Son of man. 00:09:21.62\00:09:26.43 Revelation 12:12, woe to those who are on the earth. 00:09:28.06\00:09:31.60 The dragon has come down with great wrath, 00:09:31.63\00:09:34.24 knowing that he has but a short time. 00:09:34.80\00:09:37.51 And of course, Revelation 18:10, 16-19, 00:09:38.21\00:09:43.24 you have the woes upon Babylon. 00:09:44.25\00:09:47.55 You know, the word, "woe," is used in Revelation 18; 00:09:48.25\00:09:50.59 woe, woe, woe. 00:09:50.62\00:09:51.95 And you can read there, it's like collapse of the 00:09:52.55\00:09:54.92 world economy, basically. 00:09:54.96\00:09:57.03 So basically, the last three trumpets are three woes, 00:09:57.86\00:10:02.46 which means horrendous calamities 00:10:02.50\00:10:04.90 that are going to take place. 00:10:04.93\00:10:06.33 Now let's look at the textual location of the three woes. 00:10:07.64\00:10:12.34 And we're going to look at this carefully. 00:10:12.87\00:10:15.64 Let's read Revelation 8:12-13. 00:10:15.68\00:10:19.68 "The fourth angel sounded..." This is the fourth trumpet. 00:10:20.88\00:10:23.69 So which trumpet is this? 00:10:37.27\00:10:39.17 This is the fourth trumpet, right? 00:10:39.83\00:10:41.40 Which we studied yesterday. 00:10:41.60\00:10:43.37 What does it describe? What period of history? 00:10:44.01\00:10:46.84 The period of the Roman Catholic papacy's dominion 00:10:47.44\00:10:50.98 when it eclipsed Christ, it eclipsed the Scriptures, 00:10:51.01\00:10:54.55 and it persecuted the stars so that they would not shine. 00:10:54.88\00:10:58.19 People, in other words. 00:10:58.22\00:10:59.59 And then immediately after the fourth trumpet, 00:10:59.95\00:11:03.66 it says in verse 13... 00:11:04.29\00:11:05.73 "Woe, woe, woe..." 00:11:10.73\00:11:13.84 How many? Three. 00:11:14.40\00:11:16.57 What are the three woes? 00:11:29.02\00:11:30.52 Trumpets five, six, and seven. Right? 00:11:32.15\00:11:35.06 A student from primary elementary school 00:11:38.79\00:11:41.40 can understand that. 00:11:41.43\00:11:42.86 Now Revelation 9... 00:11:46.57\00:11:48.04 We just read verse 12, That's the fourth trumpet. 00:11:48.50\00:11:50.87 Revelation 8:13 introduces three woes, 00:11:51.61\00:11:54.74 which are the three following trumpets. 00:11:56.21\00:11:58.38 Then Revelation 9:1-11 has the first woe and the fifth trumpet. 00:11:59.05\00:12:03.59 You say, how do we know that? 00:12:05.55\00:12:06.89 Well, because the Bible says so. 00:12:07.12\00:12:08.59 Notice Revelation 9:12, after the fifth trumpet. 00:12:09.96\00:12:13.76 "One woe is past." 00:12:14.00\00:12:16.26 The fifth trumpet has just sounded. 00:12:17.13\00:12:18.70 "One woe is past. 00:12:19.37\00:12:20.87 Behold, still two more woes are coming after these things." 00:12:21.20\00:12:25.51 So what were the two that were still lacking? 00:12:26.47\00:12:28.78 Duh. Six and seven, right? 00:12:31.25\00:12:33.38 Now, Revelation 9:13-21 has the sixth trumpet. 00:12:34.98\00:12:39.99 Now don't miss this point. This is a critical point. 00:12:40.02\00:12:42.76 Revelation 9:13-21 describes the sixth trumpet, 00:12:43.79\00:12:47.93 which is which woe? 00:12:47.96\00:12:49.30 The second woe. 00:12:50.43\00:12:51.77 But here is the interesting thing. 00:12:52.43\00:12:54.40 When the sixth trumpet ends, there is not a verse that says, 00:12:55.40\00:13:00.24 "The second woe is past." 00:13:00.28\00:13:02.38 Are you with me or not? 00:13:06.61\00:13:08.92 You have to wait till after chapters 10 and 11 00:13:10.82\00:13:16.42 for the second woe to pass. 00:13:17.93\00:13:19.79 What does that mean? 00:13:20.66\00:13:22.00 Is simply means that Revelation 10 and 11 00:13:23.13\00:13:26.00 are part of what? 00:13:26.03\00:13:27.40 Of the sixth trumpet. 00:13:28.17\00:13:29.70 They are an interlude in the sixth trumpet. 00:13:31.01\00:13:33.71 Are you understanding what I'm saying? 00:13:34.31\00:13:35.64 And we're going to find in the course of our study 00:13:36.71\00:13:39.71 that there are two views in Revelation 10 and 11. 00:13:40.15\00:13:43.42 In Revelation 10 you have the side of the remnant. 00:13:44.15\00:13:48.06 And in Revelation 11 you have the side of the 00:13:48.09\00:13:51.23 enemies of the remnant. 00:13:51.26\00:13:52.83 Now we'll come to that in a moment. 00:13:53.40\00:13:55.53 So let's go to the bottom of page 142. 00:13:55.56\00:13:57.93 Revelation 9:13-21 is a description 00:13:59.23\00:14:01.87 of the sixth trumpet. 00:14:01.90\00:14:03.24 When this trumpet concludes in verse 21, there is no reference 00:14:03.57\00:14:07.64 to the second woe passing. 00:14:07.74\00:14:09.74 This seems to indicate that chapters 10 and 11 00:14:10.48\00:14:13.75 will have what? 00:14:13.78\00:14:15.12 More to say about the period of the sixth trumpet. 00:14:15.15\00:14:20.12 So let's go to the next page. 00:14:20.96\00:14:22.79 Revelation 10:1 through 11:13, which is the interlude, 00:14:23.53\00:14:30.13 further amplifies certain aspects of the 00:14:31.27\00:14:34.84 fourth, fifth, and sixth trumpets. 00:14:34.87\00:14:36.71 So the interlude is going to add details about 00:14:37.31\00:14:40.01 trumpet four, five, and six. 00:14:40.04\00:14:42.14 And now notice the bullet points under this, 00:14:44.05\00:14:46.98 because it's an amplification of what are the contents of 00:14:47.02\00:14:50.82 Revelation 10:1 through 11:13. 00:14:50.85\00:14:53.02 In Revelation 11:2-6, it takes up back to the 1260 years. 00:14:53.96\00:15:01.56 Are you following me? 00:15:03.16\00:15:04.50 We'll go slow. 00:15:04.53\00:15:05.87 Because the structure is of critical importance. 00:15:05.90\00:15:08.94 It describes the two witnesses witnessing in sackcloth 00:15:09.94\00:15:13.48 for 1260 years. 00:15:13.51\00:15:15.14 What trumpet is that? 00:15:15.58\00:15:17.15 That's the fourth trumpet. 00:15:17.78\00:15:19.11 Then Revelation 11:7-10 describes what? 00:15:19.98\00:15:24.22 The French Revolution. 00:15:25.09\00:15:26.52 What trumpet would that be? 00:15:28.16\00:15:29.79 That will be the fifth trumpet. Right? 00:15:31.06\00:15:34.10 And we're going to prove that from Scripture. 00:15:34.13\00:15:36.33 When the two witnesses were killed, this was 1793 to 1797. 00:15:37.53\00:15:43.34 And the fifth trumpet is the first what? 00:15:43.51\00:15:45.64 The first woe. 00:15:46.07\00:15:47.41 Then Revelation 11:11-12 describes the resurrection 00:15:48.31\00:15:53.85 of the two witnesses. 00:15:53.88\00:15:55.22 What are the two witnesses? 00:15:55.58\00:15:56.99 The Bible; the Old and New Testament. 00:15:58.32\00:16:00.22 So what happens after the two witnesses are killed 00:16:00.26\00:16:03.16 in the French Revolution? 00:16:03.19\00:16:04.66 Ah, verses 11 and 12 say that they what? 00:16:05.66\00:16:09.40 They resurrect. 00:16:10.07\00:16:11.40 In other words, people are going to now what? 00:16:11.43\00:16:13.44 Study the Scriptures. 00:16:14.80\00:16:16.94 By the way, because the little book of 00:16:17.27\00:16:18.94 Revelation 10 has been opened. 00:16:18.97\00:16:20.81 The book that was sealed, in the time of the end 00:16:21.78\00:16:24.81 it's now opened. 00:16:24.85\00:16:26.18 So Revelation 11:11-12 describes the resurrection 00:16:27.82\00:16:31.05 of the two witnesses after the French Revolution. 00:16:31.09\00:16:34.19 They no longer testify how? 00:16:34.76\00:16:36.96 In sackcloth, but rather enjoy great power and prestige. 00:16:37.66\00:16:42.26 The miraculous resurrection of the Bible 00:16:43.83\00:16:46.67 not only describes the establishment of multiple 00:16:47.14\00:16:50.41 Bible societies in the aftermath of the French Revolution, 00:16:50.44\00:16:56.71 it also portrays the great advent awakening 00:16:57.15\00:17:00.55 and the renewed study of Bible prophecy 00:17:01.22\00:17:04.25 because the little book of Daniel was opened 00:17:04.55\00:17:07.46 at the time of the end. 00:17:07.49\00:17:08.89 When does the time of the end begin? 00:17:08.92\00:17:11.06 1798 when the French Revolution ends. 00:17:11.73\00:17:15.83 Are you seeing the importance of studying the structure? 00:17:16.56\00:17:18.97 Not only symbols; the structure. 00:17:19.73\00:17:22.47 Then Revelation 11:13 introduces the two groups 00:17:23.41\00:17:28.48 that will exist at the end of time. 00:17:29.48\00:17:31.71 What are those two groups? 00:17:33.72\00:17:35.05 The first group are the what? 00:17:35.08\00:17:37.09 The enemies of the two witnesses. 00:17:38.05\00:17:40.96 The enemies where how many? 00:17:41.32\00:17:43.12 In the previous verses, how many were the enemies? 00:17:44.23\00:17:46.70 Two. 00:17:47.50\00:17:48.83 The previous context identifies the first enemy as the what? 00:17:49.66\00:17:53.90 The Gentiles. 00:17:54.80\00:17:56.17 Now you say, "Now what does that mean, the Gentiles?" 00:17:56.77\00:17:59.07 It simply means the Roman Catholic papacy. 00:17:59.47\00:18:02.84 We're going to notice that. 00:18:03.78\00:18:05.11 Were the Gentiles the one that trampled the holy city 00:18:08.28\00:18:10.85 and persecuted the saints during the 1260 years? 00:18:10.89\00:18:14.06 Absolutely. 00:18:14.09\00:18:15.42 But it was people who claimed to be Christians, 00:18:15.56\00:18:18.79 but were really not Christians. 00:18:18.83\00:18:20.60 And the second enemy in the previous context is what? 00:18:22.73\00:18:26.70 The beast from the bottomless pit. 00:18:27.47\00:18:29.54 In other words, the French Revolution 00:18:31.01\00:18:32.51 that warred against the Bible. 00:18:32.54\00:18:34.18 So you have two enemies that are opposed to the Bible. 00:18:34.88\00:18:37.41 Who are they? 00:18:37.45\00:18:38.78 The papacy and the spirit of the French Revolution. 00:18:39.08\00:18:43.55 Now here is the interesting point. 00:18:45.69\00:18:47.92 Revelation uses the word, "enemies," only twice. 00:18:48.42\00:18:51.46 And in both references, both of those references 00:18:53.56\00:18:56.93 are in chapter 11. 00:18:56.97\00:18:58.73 Verse 5 and verse 12. 00:19:00.44\00:19:02.37 In the first instance, the enemies obscured 00:19:03.37\00:19:07.28 the two witnesses by forbidding the Bible 00:19:07.31\00:19:10.31 during the 1260 years. 00:19:12.35\00:19:14.65 In the second instance, the enemies, what did they do? 00:19:15.48\00:19:18.75 They killed the two witnesses. 00:19:19.45\00:19:21.42 So the first enemy obscures the two witnesses. 00:19:22.02\00:19:25.96 The second one kills the two witnesses 00:19:26.83\00:19:29.46 in the French Revolution. 00:19:30.07\00:19:31.40 Are you with me so far? 00:19:32.43\00:19:34.64 Yes or no? 00:19:35.34\00:19:36.67 Good. 00:19:36.91\00:19:38.24 But there's a second group that is mentioned 00:19:38.27\00:19:40.38 in Revelation 11:13. 00:19:40.41\00:19:42.31 That group is the loipos, the remnant. 00:19:43.65\00:19:47.22 I don't know why versions translate it, the rest. 00:19:48.68\00:19:50.95 It's the remnant. 00:19:52.79\00:19:54.12 The word, loipos. The remnant of her seed. 00:19:55.42\00:19:57.66 The same word that is used in Revelation 12:17. 00:19:57.69\00:20:01.10 So the remnant, what do the remnant do? 00:20:02.86\00:20:05.03 Ah, they fear God, and what? 00:20:05.60\00:20:09.60 And give Him glory. 00:20:10.07\00:20:11.97 Is that introducing the following section of Revelation, 00:20:12.84\00:20:16.51 particularly the three angels' messages? 00:20:16.78\00:20:18.65 Absolutely. 00:20:18.68\00:20:20.02 And then in Revelation 11:14, now don't miss this point, 00:20:20.65\00:20:24.62 11:14, then the second woe comes to an end. 00:20:24.65\00:20:28.82 Notice verse 14. 00:20:31.23\00:20:32.69 It says in 11:14, "The second woe is past..." 00:20:33.76\00:20:39.97 Are Revelation 10 and 11 part of the sixth trumpet? 00:20:44.84\00:20:49.11 Are they part of the second woe? 00:20:50.55\00:20:52.81 Yes. 00:20:53.05\00:20:54.38 It's an interlude that explains events that take place 00:20:54.42\00:20:58.02 primarily during the fifth and sixth trumpets. 00:20:58.29\00:21:00.99 I hope you're understanding what I'm saying. 00:21:02.49\00:21:04.06 Vitally important to understand what we're studying. 00:21:05.09\00:21:08.50 Now the next page. 00:21:09.83\00:21:11.40 The sixth trumpet presents the negative side. 00:21:13.97\00:21:17.34 It amplifies the negative side of the sixth trumpet... 00:21:19.91\00:21:22.74 Which is the perspective of whom? 00:21:22.78\00:21:24.51 The enemies. 00:21:25.21\00:21:26.55 ...of end time events. 00:21:28.08\00:21:29.58 And Revelation 10 presents what? 00:21:30.32\00:21:34.16 The positive side of the end time events. 00:21:34.62\00:21:38.53 The perspective of the remnant. 00:21:38.56\00:21:41.73 I hope you're following this. 00:21:42.96\00:21:44.47 The sixth trumpet presents the negative side of the enemies. 00:21:47.20\00:21:51.17 Revelation 10 presents the positive side; 00:21:51.87\00:21:54.84 the perspective of the remnant. 00:21:55.04\00:21:56.85 Expressed another way, the sixth trumpet describes 00:21:58.88\00:22:02.62 the attitude of the enemies of the two witnesses 00:22:02.65\00:22:05.05 in the end time, while Revelation 10 describes 00:22:05.45\00:22:08.69 the attitude of the faithful remnant during the same period. 00:22:08.72\00:22:11.63 The enemies are against Scripture, 00:22:12.93\00:22:15.16 whereas the remnant fears God and gives Him glory. 00:22:15.80\00:22:19.17 Finally, the sixth trumpet carries us from 1844 00:22:21.64\00:22:25.24 all the way to the close of probation when the 00:22:25.61\00:22:28.44 mystery of God is finished. 00:22:28.48\00:22:30.88 This occurs when the seventh trumpet is about to sound. 00:22:32.45\00:22:36.05 When the seventh trumpet sounds, Jesus takes over the kingdoms 00:22:36.55\00:22:40.29 of the world at His coming. 00:22:40.32\00:22:42.52 And then the blast of the seventh trumpet is what? 00:22:43.29\00:22:47.46 The third woe. 00:22:48.70\00:22:50.17 You don't have to be a rocket scientist 00:22:51.30\00:22:55.74 to figure out that the third woe is the seventh trumpet, 00:22:56.74\00:22:59.17 even though there's not a text that says 00:22:59.21\00:23:01.44 the third woe is finished. 00:23:01.48\00:23:02.81 Because the seventh trumpet is the end. 00:23:02.84\00:23:04.95 But you know that the seventh trumpet is the third woe. 00:23:06.21\00:23:10.62 Now we are going to skip... 00:23:11.12\00:23:13.12 I wish we had time to do this, but we don't. 00:23:13.15\00:23:15.42 I'm going to skip from page 144 through page 147. 00:23:15.82\00:23:24.60 I hope that you will study those. 00:23:26.70\00:23:28.84 That you will study those pages. 00:23:29.27\00:23:31.24 Don't just file the study notes in your bookcase. 00:23:31.74\00:23:37.95 Read what we're not able to cover. 00:23:38.58\00:23:40.98 Now I am going to deal very briefly with 00:23:42.08\00:23:47.52 pages 148 through 159. 00:23:47.72\00:23:55.40 We're going to go very quickly. 00:23:56.16\00:23:57.57 Because I want to get to the fifth trumpet now. 00:23:58.23\00:24:00.87 What we have in these pages that I'm going to 00:24:02.97\00:24:05.37 pretty much skip, what I want you to see is 00:24:05.91\00:24:09.31 that the book, The Great Controversy, 00:24:09.61\00:24:11.71 follows the exact order of the trumpets. 00:24:11.81\00:24:14.28 Okay? 00:24:16.32\00:24:17.65 That's what these pages contain. 00:24:18.65\00:24:20.76 So let's go to page 148, the first trumpet. 00:24:21.32\00:24:26.76 Great Controversy, which pages in, The Great Controversy? 00:24:27.60\00:24:30.40 17 to 38. 00:24:31.70\00:24:33.37 The title of the chapter? 00:24:33.67\00:24:35.10 "The Destruction of Jerusalem." 00:24:36.10\00:24:37.94 Well, well. 00:24:38.54\00:24:39.87 The second trumpet, pages 39 to 49. 00:24:42.24\00:24:46.41 Guess what the title is. 00:24:47.08\00:24:48.68 "Persecution in the Early Centuries." 00:24:49.65\00:24:51.89 It's speaking about the persecutions 00:24:51.92\00:24:53.76 of the Roman Empire against the Christians. 00:24:53.79\00:24:56.06 Are you following me? 00:24:58.83\00:25:00.16 Ellen White here describes the persecution of Christians 00:25:02.16\00:25:04.83 by the Roman Empire, 00:25:04.87\00:25:06.20 and then briefly describes the removal 00:25:06.74\00:25:09.07 of its restraining influence. 00:25:09.10\00:25:12.01 "The spirit of compromise and conformity was restrained 00:25:13.51\00:25:16.34 for a time by the fierce persecutions 00:25:16.38\00:25:18.75 which the church endured under paganism." 00:25:18.78\00:25:21.15 So the manifestation of the man of sin was being what? 00:25:22.28\00:25:25.19 Restrained as long as Rome, pagan Rome was ruling. 00:25:25.72\00:25:29.22 Let me ask you, would the second trumpet 00:25:31.29\00:25:33.09 certainly include the incursion of the barbarian tribes 00:25:33.13\00:25:36.30 and the removal of the restrainer? 00:25:37.53\00:25:39.63 Of course. 00:25:40.14\00:25:41.47 Now it's noteworthy that Uriah Smith dedicated the first four 00:25:42.07\00:25:45.74 trumpets to the barbarian invasions and even mentions 00:25:45.77\00:25:49.98 some of the barbarian leaders by name. 00:25:50.01\00:25:52.38 However, Ellen White never mentions the barbarian invasions 00:25:54.02\00:25:57.25 directly in, The Great Controversy. 00:25:57.29\00:25:58.89 If the invasions merited four trumpets, 00:26:00.39\00:26:02.96 why did she not mention them directly even once? 00:26:03.59\00:26:06.36 However, she was aware of the break-up of the Roman Empire, 00:26:07.80\00:26:11.67 as we can see from this quotation here, 00:26:12.40\00:26:14.57 "The vast empire of Rome crumbled to pieces, 00:26:14.60\00:26:18.17 and from its ruins..." 00:26:18.81\00:26:20.51 This is now the third and fourth trumpet, right? 00:26:21.08\00:26:23.91 "...from its ruins rose that mighty power, 00:26:24.28\00:26:28.05 the Roman Catholic Church. 00:26:28.25\00:26:29.98 This church boasts her infallibility 00:26:30.19\00:26:34.06 and her hereditary religion." 00:26:34.09\00:26:36.66 The third trumpet, Ellen White describes 00:26:38.73\00:26:43.00 in, Great Controversy, page 49 through page 60. 00:26:43.03\00:26:47.04 What is the title? 00:26:49.34\00:26:50.67 "An Era of Spiritual Darkness." 00:26:51.54\00:26:54.38 Interesting, huh? 00:26:56.75\00:26:58.11 Well, we can't go through all of this material. 00:27:00.88\00:27:03.15 Then she describes the fourth trumpet, 00:27:04.85\00:27:07.09 this is the middle of page 149, 00:27:08.02\00:27:10.99 the fourth trumpet in, Great Controversy, 00:27:11.63\00:27:14.16 pages 55 to 264. 00:27:14.20\00:27:16.43 So you have to go to, Great Controversy, 00:27:18.43\00:27:19.93 and see if what I'm telling you is true. 00:27:19.97\00:27:22.24 Because, you know, I can't go through all of this. 00:27:24.41\00:27:26.68 We just don't have the time. It's frustrating. 00:27:26.71\00:27:28.98 Maybe we need to have two weeks of Anchor. 00:27:29.48\00:27:31.55 Oh, there's three or four of you that would like that. 00:27:33.35\00:27:35.45 So Ellen White, what does she comment here? 00:27:37.69\00:27:40.26 "The apostasy under the third trumpet 00:27:40.29\00:27:42.49 intensified as the Dark Ages transpired." 00:27:43.66\00:27:47.16 Under the fourth trumpet, you remember, 00:27:48.46\00:27:50.27 the sun, the moon, and the stars experienced a partial eclipse. 00:27:50.30\00:27:53.67 As we have already noted, the sun represents Jesus, 00:27:54.57\00:27:57.77 the moon represents the Bible, 00:27:58.47\00:27:59.94 and the stars symbolize God's people. 00:27:59.97\00:28:01.94 Notice Ellen White's comment on page 55. 00:28:03.85\00:28:06.21 "The accession of the Roman church to power 00:28:06.25\00:28:08.28 marked the beginning of the..." What? 00:28:08.32\00:28:09.88 "...Dark Ages. 00:28:10.25\00:28:11.59 As her power increased, the darkness deepened." 00:28:11.62\00:28:15.32 And you know, if you read pages 55 to 264, 00:28:15.36\00:28:18.76 look up in those pages the word, "light," 00:28:19.09\00:28:21.83 and the word, "darkness." 00:28:21.86\00:28:23.60 Time and again Ellen White refers to darkness, 00:28:25.23\00:28:28.67 and darkness, and darkness, and darkness, and obscurity 00:28:28.70\00:28:31.94 during this period. 00:28:31.97\00:28:33.31 Why? Because it's the fourth trumpet. 00:28:33.34\00:28:35.98 The sun, moon, and stars have been eclipsed. 00:28:36.24\00:28:39.11 Are you with me? 00:28:39.48\00:28:40.82 Let's read some of those. 00:28:40.85\00:28:42.18 The bottom of page 149. 00:28:42.45\00:28:44.12 "In order for Satan to maintain his sway over men, 00:28:44.79\00:28:47.46 and establish the authority of the papal usurper, 00:28:47.49\00:28:49.92 he must keep them in ignorance of..." What? 00:28:50.53\00:28:53.26 "...of the Scriptures. 00:28:53.56\00:28:54.90 The Bible would exalt God and place finite men 00:28:55.10\00:28:59.67 in their true position; therefore its sacred truths 00:28:59.70\00:29:02.87 must be..." What? 00:29:02.90\00:29:04.24 "...concealed..." And what else? 00:29:04.71\00:29:06.54 "...suppressed." 00:29:06.57\00:29:07.91 Did the papacy kill the Bible? 00:29:07.94\00:29:09.68 No, it didn't kill the Bible. What did it do? 00:29:11.05\00:29:12.95 It suppressed the Bible. 00:29:12.98\00:29:14.85 Concealed the Bible. 00:29:15.75\00:29:17.42 Who killed the Bible? 00:29:17.55\00:29:19.05 The French Revolution killed it. 00:29:19.55\00:29:21.42 She continues, "The Roman church adopted this policy. 00:29:21.86\00:29:24.73 For hundreds of years the circulation of 00:29:24.76\00:29:26.59 the Bible was prohibited." 00:29:26.63\00:29:28.53 It wasn't burned, it was prohibited. 00:29:29.13\00:29:31.33 The people were forbidden to read it 00:29:31.80\00:29:34.04 or to have it in their houses, 00:29:34.07\00:29:36.24 and unprincipled priests and relates interpreted 00:29:36.60\00:29:39.51 its teachings to sustain their pretensions. 00:29:39.54\00:29:41.91 Thus the pope came to be almost universally acknowledged 00:29:42.08\00:29:46.31 as the vicegerent of God on earth, 00:29:46.35\00:29:48.78 endowed with authority over church and state." 00:29:48.82\00:29:52.62 It's interesting that after this quotation 00:29:54.26\00:29:56.22 Ellen White describes all of the errors and heresies that 00:29:57.09\00:30:00.10 enter the church during the period of the Dark Ages. 00:30:00.13\00:30:02.93 So what is the darkness? 00:30:03.83\00:30:05.37 The heresies and the errors that were taught. 00:30:06.27\00:30:09.44 It bears noting that the eclipse of the Scriptures 00:30:10.51\00:30:14.94 and the work of Christ during this period was partial, 00:30:14.98\00:30:19.41 as indicated by the expression, what? 00:30:19.45\00:30:21.48 One third. 00:30:21.98\00:30:23.32 Let's read some of those statements where Ellen White 00:30:23.49\00:30:25.39 refers to light and darkness in the following pages. 00:30:25.42\00:30:28.22 Let's skip the one from, Counsels on Education. 00:30:29.59\00:30:31.93 Let's go to the one that says, "Satan had urged 00:30:31.96\00:30:36.30 on the papal priests and prelates..." To do what? 00:30:36.50\00:30:40.50 "...to bury the Word of truth beneath the rubbish of error, 00:30:41.00\00:30:45.17 heresy, and superstition, but in a most wonderful manner 00:30:45.37\00:30:50.48 it was preserved uncorrupted 00:30:50.58\00:30:52.91 through all the ages of darkness." 00:30:52.95\00:30:57.02 Great Controversy, page 72, "As the light illuminated 00:30:59.32\00:31:02.29 their understanding and made glad their hearts..." 00:31:02.32\00:31:05.36 This is the Waldenses. 00:31:05.79\00:31:07.86 "...they longed to shed its..." What? 00:31:07.90\00:31:10.87 "...its beams upon those who were in 00:31:11.17\00:31:14.90 darkness of papal error." 00:31:14.94\00:31:17.17 See, because the heavenly bodies had been what? 00:31:17.21\00:31:19.61 Eclipsed. 00:31:19.81\00:31:21.24 Great Controversy, page 61, "Amid the gloom that settled 00:31:22.94\00:31:27.98 upon the earth during the long period of papal supremacy, 00:31:28.02\00:31:30.69 the light of truth..." 00:31:30.72\00:31:32.32 Now here comes the one-third idea. 00:31:32.42\00:31:34.46 "...the light of truth could not be wholly extinguished..." 00:31:34.49\00:31:39.93 Only what? 00:31:41.20\00:31:42.53 Partially extinguished. 00:31:42.90\00:31:45.63 "In every age, there were witnesses for God; 00:31:46.60\00:31:49.47 men who cherished faith in Christ as the only mediator 00:31:49.67\00:31:53.48 between God and man, who held the Bible 00:31:53.94\00:31:56.31 as the only rule of life, and who hallowed the true Sabbath." 00:31:56.41\00:31:59.98 Let's go to the next quotation. Great Controversy, pages 65-66. 00:32:00.02\00:32:03.75 "Behind the lofty bulwarks of the mountains, 00:32:04.29\00:32:06.86 in all ages the refuge of the persecuted and oppressed, 00:32:07.19\00:32:10.39 the Waldenses found..." Where? "...a hiding place. 00:32:10.63\00:32:15.10 Here, the light of truth was kept..." What? 00:32:15.36\00:32:18.00 "...burning amid the darkness of the Middle Ages. 00:32:18.17\00:32:22.77 Here, for a thousand years, witnesses for the truth 00:32:22.80\00:32:25.91 maintained the ancient faith." 00:32:25.94\00:32:28.04 Were the sun and moon totally eclipsed? 00:32:28.28\00:32:31.88 Was the testimony of the stars, God's people, totally eclipsed? 00:32:32.51\00:32:36.25 No. 00:32:36.28\00:32:37.62 The next statement, "In the schools whither they went," 00:32:38.35\00:32:42.12 speaking about the Waldenses, 00:32:42.16\00:32:43.76 "they were not to make confidants of any. 00:32:43.99\00:32:46.13 Their garments were so prepared as to conceal 00:32:46.16\00:32:48.50 their greatest treasure; 00:32:48.53\00:32:49.86 the precious manuscripts of the Scriptures." 00:32:49.90\00:32:53.20 See, the Scriptures are giving their witness, 00:32:53.23\00:32:55.20 but they're doing it in sackcloth. 00:32:55.24\00:32:57.51 In obscurity. 00:32:57.87\00:32:59.21 Let's jump down to the one from, Great Controversy, pages 73-74. 00:33:00.34\00:33:05.05 Particularly the highlighted portions. 00:33:06.08\00:33:08.95 "Thus, the light of truth penetrated many a..." What? 00:33:08.98\00:33:13.02 "...darkened mind, rolling back the cloud of..." What? 00:33:13.49\00:33:17.33 "...gloom, until the Sun of Righteousness shone 00:33:17.73\00:33:21.20 into the heart with healing in His beams." 00:33:21.23\00:33:25.13 Let's go to the next page. Let's talk about John Wycliffe. 00:33:27.04\00:33:30.01 Notice the theme of light and darkness again. 00:33:30.04\00:33:32.21 "Except among the Waldenses, 00:33:33.74\00:33:35.48 the word of God had for ages been..." What? 00:33:35.51\00:33:37.91 Notice, it's not killing the two witnesses. 00:33:38.68\00:33:41.55 Locked up, suppressed, concealed, hidden. 00:33:42.05\00:33:44.95 "Except among the Waldenses, the word of God had for ages 00:33:45.72\00:33:48.62 been locked up in languages known only to the learned; 00:33:48.66\00:33:51.99 but the time has come for the Scriptures to be translated 00:33:52.26\00:33:55.76 and given to the people of different lands 00:33:55.80\00:33:57.87 in their native tongue. 00:33:57.90\00:33:59.23 The world..." 00:33:59.27\00:34:00.60 She's talking about now the Protestant Reformation rising. 00:34:00.64\00:34:03.44 "The world had passed its..." What? 00:34:03.54\00:34:06.01 "...midnight." 00:34:06.78\00:34:08.11 By the way, is it still dark after midnight? 00:34:08.14\00:34:10.65 But the midnight is the deepest darkness. 00:34:12.21\00:34:14.18 So now the Protestant Reformation, 00:34:14.22\00:34:15.98 the light is beginning to what? 00:34:16.02\00:34:17.75 The light is going to soon appear. 00:34:18.55\00:34:20.32 "The world has passed its midnight. 00:34:20.59\00:34:22.56 The hours of darkness were..." What? 00:34:22.96\00:34:25.46 "...wearing away, and in many lands appears tokens 00:34:25.73\00:34:29.40 of the coming dawn." 00:34:29.43\00:34:31.07 Why? Because now the Scriptures were going to 00:34:31.10\00:34:34.10 be brought to light. 00:34:34.14\00:34:35.54 The next chapter on Huss and Jerome. 00:34:36.77\00:34:40.81 Notice once again the idea of light and darkness. 00:34:40.91\00:34:43.41 Are you understanding the fourth trumpet 00:34:43.45\00:34:44.91 in the light of this? 00:34:44.95\00:34:46.28 Ellen White is commenting on the fourth trumpet. 00:34:46.38\00:34:48.88 "God permitted great light to shine upon the minds 00:34:49.85\00:34:53.39 of these chosen men..." 00:34:53.59\00:34:54.96 That is, Huss and Jerome. 00:34:55.16\00:34:56.59 "...revealing to them many of the errors of Rome, 00:34:56.83\00:34:59.76 but they did not receive all the..." What? 00:34:59.79\00:35:02.13 "...all the light that was to be given to the world. 00:35:02.60\00:35:05.43 Through these, His servants, God was leading His people..." What? 00:35:05.47\00:35:09.17 There it is, "...out of darkness of Romanism. 00:35:09.70\00:35:12.57 But there were many and great obstacles for them to meet, 00:35:12.71\00:35:16.31 and He led them on step by step as they could bear it. 00:35:16.64\00:35:20.28 They were not prepared to receive..." What? 00:35:20.58\00:35:23.12 "...all the light at once. 00:35:23.45\00:35:25.62 Like the full glory of the noontide sun to those who have 00:35:25.65\00:35:29.99 long dwelt..." What? 00:35:30.03\00:35:32.23 "...in darkness, it would, if presented, 00:35:32.26\00:35:35.96 have caused them to turn away." 00:35:36.00\00:35:38.63 Then Ellen White talks about Martin Luther. 00:35:39.30\00:35:41.10 These are all the following pages that, you know, 00:35:41.14\00:35:43.41 Great Controversy, the fourth trumpet, 00:35:43.44\00:35:45.37 where does she comment the fourth trumpet? 00:35:45.41\00:35:47.54 She comments it in, Great Controversy, pages 55-264. 00:35:47.58\00:35:51.18 All of these are from those pages. 00:35:51.21\00:35:52.91 Notice what she has to say about Martin Luther, 00:35:54.02\00:35:56.69 at the bottom of page 152. 00:35:56.72\00:35:58.52 "Foremost among those who were called 00:35:59.42\00:36:01.56 to lead the church from..." What? 00:36:01.59\00:36:03.36 "...the darkness of popery into..." What? 00:36:03.83\00:36:06.33 "...the light of a purer faith stood Martin Luther. 00:36:06.80\00:36:09.70 Zealous, ardent, and devoted, knowing no fear 00:36:10.17\00:36:12.97 but the fear of God, and acknowledging no foundation 00:36:13.00\00:36:15.74 for religious faith but by the..." What? 00:36:15.77\00:36:18.37 "...Holy Scriptures, Luther was the man for his time. 00:36:18.57\00:36:22.04 Through him, God accomplished a great work for the reformation 00:36:22.18\00:36:25.45 of the church and the enlightenment of the world." 00:36:25.48\00:36:31.12 Are you catching the point? 00:36:32.09\00:36:33.42 You'll find many other references. 00:36:34.72\00:36:36.19 This is just a sampling of the passages that 00:36:36.22\00:36:40.46 deal with light and darkness. 00:36:40.50\00:36:42.40 And then, interestingly enough, after describing this period 00:36:43.50\00:36:46.84 of darkness, and that the light was about to dawn 00:36:46.87\00:36:50.71 in the Protestant reformation, I bet you can't guess 00:36:50.91\00:36:54.24 what the next chapter is. 00:36:54.28\00:36:55.84 "The French Revolution." 00:36:56.48\00:36:58.11 Hello. 00:36:58.15\00:36:59.48 What trumpet would that be? 00:37:01.82\00:37:03.35 That would be trumpet number five. 00:37:04.02\00:37:05.69 And we're going to see it clearly as we study along. 00:37:06.12\00:37:09.72 So the next one is the French Revolution, 00:37:10.09\00:37:14.10 which is the fifth trumpet and the first what? 00:37:14.13\00:37:17.50 And the first woe. 00:37:17.87\00:37:19.20 Then, listen up, the sixth trumpet and the second woe 00:37:19.77\00:37:25.07 is described on pages 299-612. 00:37:25.11\00:37:30.08 Because you'll notice in the book of Revelation 00:37:32.85\00:37:34.72 the fifth and sixth trumpets are the longest. 00:37:34.75\00:37:36.99 So then Ellen White has to make it the longest too. 00:37:38.09\00:37:40.59 Now the sixth trumpet and the second woe 00:37:43.16\00:37:45.36 give us a view of the righteous and a view of whom? 00:37:45.39\00:37:47.96 Of the wicked. 00:37:48.46\00:37:49.80 Now here's the interesting point. 00:37:49.83\00:37:51.17 Pages 299-491, Ellen White presents the emphasis upon 00:37:52.23\00:37:57.74 the righteous and God's gathering message. 00:37:58.07\00:38:00.61 Pages 500-612, she emphasis the wicked 00:38:02.34\00:38:06.68 and Satan gathering the wicked. 00:38:06.72\00:38:08.68 Does that fit with the interlude? 00:38:10.25\00:38:11.99 Did Ellen White sit down and figure this out? 00:38:14.69\00:38:16.32 She says, "Well, you know, I need to put the interlude here 00:38:16.36\00:38:18.33 because the interlude is in Revelation." 00:38:18.36\00:38:20.06 No! 00:38:21.00\00:38:22.33 God, the same Spirit that guided John in composing Revelation 00:38:23.16\00:38:29.30 is the same Spirit that inspired Ellen G. White. 00:38:29.34\00:38:32.01 She's following the same sequence. 00:38:32.54\00:38:34.21 Now let's continue. 00:38:38.28\00:38:39.61 Immediately after the chapter on the French Revolution, 00:38:39.65\00:38:42.02 this is a very interesting detail, 00:38:42.72\00:38:44.59 Ellen White goes back to 1620. 00:38:45.65\00:38:50.23 What date was the French Revolution? 00:38:51.99\00:38:53.73 1793 to 17... Uh... It ended in 1797. 00:38:54.90\00:39:00.94 Right? 00:39:00.97\00:39:02.30 And the pope was taken captive the next year. 00:39:02.57\00:39:05.17 Which is really the culmination of the spirit 00:39:05.54\00:39:07.68 of the French Revolution. 00:39:07.71\00:39:09.18 But in the very next chapter after the one on the 00:39:09.61\00:39:12.61 French Revolution, Ellen White goes back in time 00:39:12.65\00:39:15.58 to the arrival of the pilgrims in 1620. 00:39:16.45\00:39:19.19 See, she also has flashbacks in her writings. 00:39:20.46\00:39:23.02 But you're going to notice that this is extraordinary. 00:39:23.66\00:39:26.13 She describes the arrival of the pilgrim fathers in America 00:39:28.10\00:39:31.53 searching for civil and religious liberty. 00:39:31.97\00:39:34.44 This prepared a place for what? 00:39:35.47\00:39:37.37 For the preaching of the three angels' messages 00:39:37.41\00:39:40.41 with power to the world. 00:39:40.44\00:39:41.81 And thus, gathering God's people. 00:39:41.84\00:39:44.81 Notably, Revelation 12 describes how the dragon was spewing 00:39:46.25\00:39:51.62 waters out of his mouth during the 1260 years. 00:39:51.65\00:39:55.16 Remember that the dragon was spewing water out of 00:39:55.19\00:39:57.36 his mouth to try and drown the woman. 00:39:57.39\00:39:59.49 However, the text tells us that the earth came to her what? 00:40:01.60\00:40:05.63 Came to her rescue, 00:40:06.30\00:40:07.84 and swallowed up the waters of persecution. 00:40:08.20\00:40:10.91 The earth here represents what? 00:40:13.27\00:40:15.64 Not the United States. 00:40:16.18\00:40:19.08 The territory of the United States. 00:40:19.11\00:40:21.85 There was no United States in 1620. 00:40:22.52\00:40:25.32 There were only colonies that belonged to England. 00:40:26.65\00:40:29.59 That's why is says the... 00:40:31.19\00:40:32.53 It doesn't say that the beast with two horns helped the woman. 00:40:32.56\00:40:35.56 It says the earth helped the woman 00:40:35.60\00:40:37.83 from where the beast with two horns will later rise. 00:40:37.87\00:40:42.10 So the earth comes to her rescue, 00:40:44.77\00:40:47.34 swallows up the waters of persecution. 00:40:47.38\00:40:49.41 The earth represents the territory of the United States 00:40:49.88\00:40:52.55 that provided refuge for those who were 00:40:52.58\00:40:54.95 suffering persecution in Europe. 00:40:54.98\00:40:56.89 The United States became the beacon for other western nations 00:40:58.15\00:41:02.82 to establish secular governments. 00:41:02.86\00:41:05.06 You know, this is an interesting statement 00:41:06.39\00:41:09.36 by James Madison in 1822. 00:41:09.40\00:41:11.90 When was the Declaration of Independence uttered? 00:41:13.23\00:41:16.54 1776. And the Constitution? 00:41:17.04\00:41:19.67 1787. 00:41:20.08\00:41:21.54 And the Bill of Rights? 1791. 00:41:21.88\00:41:24.58 So by 1822 the experiment had had a few years. 00:41:26.72\00:41:30.65 And notice what Madison said. 00:41:31.02\00:41:32.79 "We are teaching the world..." 00:41:33.29\00:41:35.26 Who are we teaching? 00:41:36.62\00:41:37.96 Who is the United States teaching? 00:41:37.99\00:41:39.33 We're teaching them the right thing now, but soon 00:41:40.76\00:41:42.83 the United States is going to teach it the wrong thing. 00:41:42.86\00:41:44.70 Because at first it has two horns like a lamb, 00:41:46.00\00:41:47.84 but then it speaks like a dragon. 00:41:47.87\00:41:49.20 By the way, it doesn't speak like a dragon 00:41:49.24\00:41:51.27 while it has the two horns. 00:41:51.31\00:41:52.64 This is a case, once again, where the introductory verse 00:41:52.67\00:41:55.41 has the beginning and ending. 00:41:55.44\00:41:57.11 When it rises, it had two horns like a lamb, 00:41:58.61\00:42:00.78 but at the end it speaks like a dragon. 00:42:00.82\00:42:02.62 Are you with me? 00:42:03.85\00:42:05.19 So, he wrote this, "We are teaching the world 00:42:06.25\00:42:11.99 the great truth that governments do better without 00:42:12.03\00:42:16.10 kings and nobles than with them." 00:42:16.13\00:42:18.20 So in other words, he's saying, we are teaching 00:42:20.34\00:42:22.40 the world that they should establish 00:42:22.50\00:42:24.71 republican governments. 00:42:24.74\00:42:26.68 Not the Republican party. 00:42:27.58\00:42:29.18 Republics. 00:42:31.38\00:42:32.71 Where the power flows from the people up 00:42:33.11\00:42:35.68 rather than from a king down. 00:42:36.08\00:42:37.85 But then he says, "The merit will be doubled by the 00:42:39.95\00:42:43.06 other lesson, that religion flourishes in greater purity 00:42:43.09\00:42:48.50 without than with the aid of government." 00:42:48.96\00:42:52.37 This is republicanism and Protestantism. 00:42:54.30\00:42:57.04 Separation of church and state. 00:42:57.47\00:42:59.81 Civil and religious liberty. 00:43:00.24\00:43:03.18 Next page. 00:43:05.21\00:43:06.55 It is remarkable... 00:43:07.38\00:43:09.08 This is another indication that Ellen White was right on target. 00:43:10.82\00:43:14.69 The same Spirit was inspiring her 00:43:14.72\00:43:16.69 as the book of Revelation. 00:43:16.79\00:43:18.29 It is remarkable that both Revelation 12 00:43:18.69\00:43:21.56 and Ellen White describe the 1260 years, 00:43:22.36\00:43:27.14 the French Revolution, and then go back in time 00:43:28.50\00:43:33.21 to describe the arrival of the pilgrims. 00:43:33.24\00:43:36.41 You say, "How's that?" 00:43:40.38\00:43:41.72 Well, in Revelation 12, it says that the woman flees 00:43:42.85\00:43:46.96 to the wilderness for how long? 00:43:46.99\00:43:48.66 1260 years. 00:43:50.33\00:43:51.79 But then it says the earth helped the woman. 00:43:52.39\00:43:55.30 Did that take place before the 1260 years ended? 00:43:56.13\00:43:59.17 Yes. 00:44:00.54\00:44:01.87 The United States, the territory, provided refuge 00:44:02.57\00:44:05.07 for those who were being persecuted. 00:44:05.11\00:44:06.64 So in Revelation 12, it speaks about the dragon 00:44:06.68\00:44:11.48 persecuting the church for 1260 years, 00:44:11.51\00:44:15.12 but then it says the earth helps the woman, 00:44:15.15\00:44:17.39 which takes you back to the pilgrims coming 00:44:17.42\00:44:20.06 and the United States providing refuge. 00:44:20.09\00:44:21.92 Is that what Ellen White does? 00:44:22.29\00:44:23.69 After describing the French Revolution, what does she do? 00:44:24.63\00:44:27.30 The 1260 years and the French Revolution, 00:44:27.33\00:44:29.43 she goes back and she speaks about 00:44:29.63\00:44:32.03 the arrival of the pilgrims. 00:44:32.07\00:44:33.70 Amazing. 00:44:34.07\00:44:35.40 Beginners luck. 00:44:36.94\00:44:38.27 No! 00:44:41.34\00:44:42.68 In the following chapters, Ellen White wrote about the Great 00:44:44.05\00:44:47.75 Second Advent Awakening after 1798, 00:44:48.35\00:44:52.25 the Millerite movement, the Great Disappointment, 00:44:52.69\00:44:56.62 the opening of the heavenly temple for the judgment. 00:44:56.99\00:44:59.43 Let me ask you, what is the center of focus here; 00:44:59.46\00:45:02.03 the enemies or the remnant? 00:45:02.06\00:45:04.60 The remnant. 00:45:05.30\00:45:06.63 The following chapters describe the resurrection 00:45:09.30\00:45:11.54 of the two witnesses, 00:45:11.57\00:45:12.91 and the opening of the little book of Daniel in Revelation 10. 00:45:13.38\00:45:17.58 This is the positive side of the sixth trumpet. 00:45:17.95\00:45:21.08 God musters His forces with three angels' messages 00:45:22.42\00:45:25.85 to gather His remnant on His side. 00:45:25.89\00:45:27.99 Notice the titles of the chapters. 00:45:29.52\00:45:31.39 "Heralds of the Morning" 00:45:31.89\00:45:33.56 This is the signs in the sun, moon, and stars 00:45:34.53\00:45:37.47 as an announcement of the coming message of judgment. 00:45:37.50\00:45:40.94 "An American Reformer" 00:45:41.37\00:45:42.90 It's a chapter about William Miller. 00:45:43.30\00:45:45.21 "Light Through the Darkness" 00:45:46.04\00:45:47.71 The disciples' misunderstanding of the prophecies concerning 00:45:47.91\00:45:50.78 the first coming sets the stage for their misunderstanding 00:45:50.81\00:45:54.15 of the prophecy of the 2300 days. 00:45:54.18\00:45:57.42 "A Great Religious Awakening" 00:45:58.05\00:45:59.62 She described Joseph Wolff, Anglican ministers, 00:45:59.65\00:46:02.19 Emmanuel Lacunza, Johann Albrecht Bengel, 00:46:02.22\00:46:05.26 Francois Samuel Robert Louis Gaussen, 00:46:05.96\00:46:08.73 child preachers, William Miller, 00:46:08.76\00:46:10.80 proclaiming the judgment hour message. 00:46:10.83\00:46:12.87 Is that what Revelation 10 is all about? 00:46:12.90\00:46:14.90 Then you have, "A Warning Rejected". 00:46:16.20\00:46:17.97 This is the proclamation by the Millerites 00:46:18.67\00:46:20.74 of the second angel's message, that Protestantism has fallen, 00:46:20.78\00:46:24.51 and calling people to come out. 00:46:24.95\00:46:27.08 "Prophecies Fulfilled" 00:46:28.85\00:46:30.55 It describes a series of prophecies that pointed to the 00:46:30.89\00:46:33.49 great advent awakening. 00:46:33.52\00:46:35.92 "What is the Sanctuary?" 00:46:36.49\00:46:37.96 It introduces the idea of the investigative judgment. 00:46:37.99\00:46:40.70 "In the Holy of Holies" 00:46:40.73\00:46:42.10 The Most Holy ministry of Christ. 00:46:42.13\00:46:44.80 "God's Law Immutable" 00:46:45.00\00:46:46.33 The remnant understood the importance of the law 00:46:46.40\00:46:48.87 when the Most Holy Place opened. 00:46:48.90\00:46:50.51 "A Work of Reform" 00:46:50.61\00:46:51.94 That's the need to restore the Sabbath to its proper place. 00:46:51.97\00:46:55.38 And then, "Modern Revivals", which distinguish a genuine 00:46:55.98\00:47:00.48 revival from a counterfeit revival. 00:47:00.52\00:47:02.58 And finally, "Facing Life's Record", which is a description 00:47:02.62\00:47:05.42 of the investigative judgment. 00:47:05.45\00:47:07.26 What is the center of focus of all of these chapters? 00:47:08.49\00:47:11.29 It's what we have in Revelation 10. 00:47:12.36\00:47:14.73 The opening of the little book. 00:47:15.83\00:47:17.53 The beginning of the investigative judgment. 00:47:18.00\00:47:19.93 The cleansing of the Sanctuary. 00:47:19.97\00:47:21.64 The measuring of the temple. 00:47:21.67\00:47:23.20 So in the context of the sixth trumpet, 00:47:24.64\00:47:26.84 she is describing what is in Revelation 10. 00:47:26.88\00:47:29.94 That's the view of the righteous. 00:47:29.98\00:47:32.01 But now here comes the amazing thing. 00:47:33.25\00:47:35.25 This is on page 156. 00:47:36.55\00:47:39.59 We can also make a strong argument that the following 00:47:39.62\00:47:43.02 chapters in, The Great Controversy, 00:47:43.06\00:47:44.39 all describe the period of the sixth trumpet. 00:47:44.59\00:47:46.90 The sixth trumpet here is described as a view of the 00:47:47.26\00:47:50.87 wicked which were introduced in Revelation 9:13-21. 00:47:50.90\00:47:55.90 What are the following chapters? 00:47:57.61\00:47:59.11 What are the titles of the following chapters? 00:47:59.14\00:48:01.41 "The Origin of Evil" 00:48:02.11\00:48:03.65 "Enmity Between God and Satan" 00:48:04.85\00:48:06.98 "The Agency of Evil Spirits" 00:48:07.68\00:48:10.15 "Snares of Satan" 00:48:10.89\00:48:12.65 "The First Great Deception" 00:48:13.19\00:48:15.09 "Can Our Dead Speak to Us?" 00:48:16.42\00:48:18.29 What is the focus here? 00:48:18.33\00:48:19.79 Oh, the focus is on how Satan is trying to gather whom? 00:48:21.26\00:48:25.63 The wicked. 00:48:25.93\00:48:27.27 "Liberty of Conscience Threatened" 00:48:27.77\00:48:29.97 "The Impending Conflict" 00:48:30.51\00:48:31.84 "The Scriptures a Safeguard" 00:48:31.87\00:48:33.44 "The Final Warning" 00:48:33.48\00:48:34.91 The focus is on how Satan is gathering the wicked 00:48:35.78\00:48:38.41 on his side for the final controversy 00:48:38.45\00:48:41.78 between good and evil. 00:48:41.82\00:48:43.15 Between the righteous and the unrighteous. 00:48:43.35\00:48:45.39 Regarding the gathering of the righteous and the wicked 00:48:46.69\00:48:49.12 in Revelation 10, Ellen White wrote the following: 00:48:49.72\00:48:54.53 Let's read v7, Bible Commentary, page 971. 00:48:54.86\00:48:59.23 "The mighty angel who instructed John was no less 00:48:59.73\00:49:02.54 a personage than Jesus Christ. 00:49:02.57\00:49:04.61 Setting His right foot on the sea and His left on the dry land 00:49:04.97\00:49:08.08 shows the part which He is acting in the closing scenes 00:49:08.18\00:49:12.51 of the great controversy with Satan. 00:49:12.55\00:49:14.95 This position denotes His supreme power and authority 00:49:15.68\00:49:19.15 over the whole earth. 00:49:19.19\00:49:20.52 The controversy had waxed stronger and more determined 00:49:20.56\00:49:24.49 from age to age, and will continue to do so, 00:49:24.53\00:49:28.06 to the concluding scenes when the masterly working 00:49:28.63\00:49:31.83 of the powers of darkness shall reach their height. 00:49:31.87\00:49:35.30 Satan, united with..." What? 00:49:35.90\00:49:38.14 "...with evil men, will deceive the whole world and the churches 00:49:38.84\00:49:43.58 who receive not the love of the truth. 00:49:43.61\00:49:46.01 However, the mighty angel demands attention. 00:49:46.35\00:49:49.92 He cries with a loud voice. 00:49:50.25\00:49:52.05 He is to show the power and authority of His voice 00:49:52.29\00:49:54.99 to those who have united with Satan to oppose the truth." 00:49:55.02\00:49:59.13 So the mighty angel of Revelation 10 00:50:00.00\00:50:02.46 is going to call those on the devil's side to come over. 00:50:02.86\00:50:05.70 And Satan on the other hand, the enemies are going to be working 00:50:06.20\00:50:10.27 to gather people on the devil's side. 00:50:10.37\00:50:12.77 So this is the perspective of the interlude that we find 00:50:13.27\00:50:17.91 in Revelation 10 and Revelation 11. 00:50:17.95\00:50:21.78 And then let's go to page 159. 00:50:22.92\00:50:26.29 Then Ellen White describes the seventh trumpet. 00:50:28.82\00:50:32.39 When does the mystery of God come to an end? 00:50:33.93\00:50:36.23 Right before what? 00:50:38.87\00:50:40.40 The seventh angel blows his trumpet. 00:50:40.87\00:50:43.34 What is the finishing of the mystery of God? 00:50:43.97\00:50:46.11 It's the close of probation. 00:50:47.74\00:50:49.08 The mystery of God is the preaching of the gospel. 00:50:49.74\00:50:52.68 We're going to see that when we study 00:50:53.92\00:50:55.58 about the little book. 00:50:56.12\00:50:57.45 So the mystery of God is the preaching of the gospel. 00:50:57.49\00:51:01.59 So what is the ending of the mystery of God? 00:51:01.79\00:51:04.19 It's the finishing of the preaching of the gospel. 00:51:04.83\00:51:07.20 So when the seventh trumpet is about to sound, 00:51:08.20\00:51:10.83 probation closes, and then you have the plagues, 00:51:11.10\00:51:15.40 and eventually the second coming of Christ, 00:51:16.40\00:51:18.54 which is the seventh trumpet. 00:51:19.14\00:51:20.61 Now page 613, do you know what chapter that is? 00:51:21.51\00:51:27.08 It's called, "The Time of Trouble". 00:51:27.12\00:51:28.52 And do you know with what verse Ellen White begins that chapter? 00:51:30.85\00:51:34.36 "At that time, Michael shall stand up..." 00:51:34.96\00:51:37.39 Which is the close of probation. 00:51:39.09\00:51:40.76 "...and there will be a time of trouble such as never was." 00:51:41.86\00:51:44.53 See, that's the finishing of the mystery of God, 00:51:44.57\00:51:46.50 when the seventh trumpet is about to sound. 00:51:46.53\00:51:48.60 And then you move on all the way to page 661 00:51:48.77\00:51:53.51 and you're going to find the second coming, 00:51:53.78\00:51:55.91 the millennium, the post millennium, 00:51:56.11\00:51:58.51 and the new heavens and the new earth. 00:51:58.55\00:52:00.18 Are you following me? 00:52:01.48\00:52:02.82 Amazing how Ellen White follows the exact order 00:52:03.32\00:52:06.19 of the seven trumpets, 00:52:07.26\00:52:08.62 beginning with the destruction of Jerusalem. 00:52:08.66\00:52:11.23 Not with the four trumpets applying 00:52:11.26\00:52:13.53 to the barbarian invasions. 00:52:13.56\00:52:15.30 It's a distraction. 00:52:15.76\00:52:17.10 What it does is it takes the eyes away from the 00:52:18.43\00:52:20.64 flow of history, how God has been guiding 00:52:20.67\00:52:23.47 history with His hand. 00:52:23.51\00:52:25.31 Now we only have like five minutes left for this segment, 00:52:26.84\00:52:30.15 so let's go to page 160. 00:52:30.18\00:52:33.58 I was hoping to be able to finish this the next session, 00:52:35.22\00:52:37.95 but we might have to take part of session number four 00:52:37.99\00:52:42.22 today to finish this. 00:52:42.26\00:52:44.16 Let's go to Revelation chapter 9, 00:52:46.46\00:52:51.80 and let's read about the fifth, probably we'll just 00:52:53.54\00:52:58.87 read the passage now, and then we'll go 00:52:58.91\00:53:01.84 to page 160 in our next segment. 00:53:01.88\00:53:04.91 But I want to read the fifth trumpet so that we have 00:53:04.95\00:53:08.62 the details clear in our minds. 00:53:08.82\00:53:10.69 It says in verse 1... 00:53:10.89\00:53:12.32 Notice, he didn't see a star fall from heaven to the earth. 00:53:20.53\00:53:23.47 Actually, we're going to notice that really it says, 00:53:23.97\00:53:27.64 "that had fallen from heaven to the earth." 00:53:27.67\00:53:30.11 It fell before the fifth trumpet. 00:53:30.14\00:53:32.21 But anyway, it says... 00:53:32.24\00:53:34.08 So what is this being going to do? 00:53:43.18\00:53:46.59 He's going to open the bottomless pit. 00:53:46.62\00:53:48.62 And all hell is going to break loose. 00:53:49.26\00:53:51.86 Verse 2... 00:53:52.66\00:53:54.00 So we have locusts, and the locusts are scorpions. 00:54:21.42\00:54:24.23 So it's a period of great anx, isn't it? 00:55:00.96\00:55:03.40 Great anxiety. 00:55:04.23\00:55:05.73 And by the way, they're coming up from hell, 00:55:27.86\00:55:29.32 because it continues saying... 00:55:29.36\00:55:30.69 Oh, so they have a general. Right? 00:55:51.18\00:55:54.22 And who is the general? 00:55:54.62\00:55:56.12 The angel of the bottomless pit. 00:55:56.52\00:55:59.35 Which means the destroyer. 00:56:10.83\00:56:14.24 So this is quite a vivid description, isn't it? 00:56:15.77\00:56:18.37 We're going to find in our next segment that this is describing 00:56:20.21\00:56:23.58 a new manifestation of Satan's power from the bottomless pit 00:56:24.48\00:56:29.62 in the French Revolution. 00:56:29.65\00:56:31.49 Now you say, "How do you know that?" 00:56:33.05\00:56:34.39 Because in the fifth trumpet these scorpions which are 00:56:35.16\00:56:40.90 also referred to as having characteristics of lions, 00:56:40.93\00:56:43.97 and tails that sting, and they arise from the bottomless pit, 00:56:44.27\00:56:48.64 that's in the fifth trumpet. 00:56:49.97\00:56:51.57 Where does the beast of Revelation 11 rise from, 00:56:52.04\00:56:55.51 which represents the French Revolution? 00:56:55.54\00:56:57.65 It rises from the bottomless pit. 00:56:58.21\00:57:00.62 And I'm going to give you statements from Ellen White 00:57:02.15\00:57:04.22 where she clearly applies this symbolic language 00:57:04.25\00:57:07.76 to the rise of atheism during the French Revolution. 00:57:07.99\00:57:14.20 So in our next segment we are going to take a look 00:57:14.80\00:57:19.30 at what it means when is says that the angel 00:57:19.83\00:57:26.84 of the bottomless pit is unbound, 00:57:26.88\00:57:29.48 and this coming up, all of these demonic powers, 00:57:29.61\00:57:33.25 what specific event of human history 00:57:33.55\00:57:36.28 this is referring to. 00:57:36.32\00:57:38.49 So let me ask, have you understood 00:57:38.79\00:57:40.99 what we've studied so far? 00:57:41.02\00:57:42.72 I try to go as slow as we can. 00:57:42.96\00:57:44.86 And now we're going to talk more about 00:57:45.23\00:57:48.16 the fifth trumpet during our next segment 00:57:48.20\00:57:50.97 after we enjoy a delicious lunch. 00:57:51.70\00:57:54.84
