Welcome back. 00:00:15.91\00:00:17.38 It hardly seems possible that this is session number seven. 00:00:17.48\00:00:22.18 Unbelievable. Seven of twenty-four. 00:00:23.02\00:00:25.59 And so far we have studied introductory matters 00:00:26.19\00:00:29.52 and we have also dealt with the first three trumpets. 00:00:29.56\00:00:33.83 So our task this afternoon is to finish our study of the 00:00:34.26\00:00:38.47 fourth trumpet. 00:00:38.50\00:00:39.83 But before we do, we want to start with a word of prayer 00:00:40.04\00:00:42.87 as we do in the morning, and in the afternoon as well. 00:00:42.90\00:00:45.77 So let's bow our heads for prayer. 00:00:45.81\00:00:47.44 Father in heaven, thank You for the free time 00:00:47.91\00:00:51.25 that we've been able to enjoy, for fellowship, 00:00:51.28\00:00:53.75 for partaking of a good meal, for going out and walking. 00:00:53.78\00:00:56.62 You're such a wonderful God. 00:00:57.15\00:00:58.49 Thank You for all of Your blessings. 00:00:58.69\00:01:00.49 We ask that You'll be present with us 00:01:00.72\00:01:02.49 as we study the fourth trumpet. 00:01:02.82\00:01:04.93 This we pray in Jesus' name. Amen. 00:01:05.19\00:01:08.73 Alright, we are going to page 95 in our study notes. 00:01:10.77\00:01:16.07 Page 95. 00:01:16.10\00:01:17.51 And incidentally, it is Revelation 8:12. 00:01:17.71\00:01:22.71 We're not going to include 13 yet. 00:01:23.35\00:01:25.05 We're going to get to 13 a little bit later on. 00:01:25.08\00:01:27.55 But it's really Revelation 8:12 that is quoted here. 00:01:27.78\00:01:32.05 So let's read the verse that describes the fourth trumpet. 00:01:32.39\00:01:37.83 So that is the fourth trumpet. 00:01:59.95\00:02:02.62 So you'll notice that there are three main symbols 00:02:02.88\00:02:05.89 in this fourth trumpet: the sun, the moon, and the stars. 00:02:06.25\00:02:12.39 So in order to understand the period of the fourth trumpet 00:02:12.93\00:02:15.86 we need to understand what is meant by the sun, 00:02:15.90\00:02:18.70 the moon, and the stars. 00:02:18.73\00:02:20.90 So what are the key verses for us to understand 00:02:21.60\00:02:25.11 the meaning of these symbols? 00:02:25.47\00:02:27.14 Well, one of the key verses is Genesis 1:16. 00:02:27.48\00:02:33.72 Genesis 1:16 00:02:33.95\00:02:36.82 What light is that? 00:02:45.53\00:02:47.40 The sun. 00:02:47.43\00:02:48.76 Remember that's a very important expression, "the lesser light." 00:02:50.57\00:02:53.90 So do you have all three symbols in this verse? 00:02:59.64\00:03:02.74 You have all three symbols in this verse. 00:03:03.11\00:03:05.21 The greater light, the lesser light, and the stars 00:03:05.25\00:03:08.58 that shine at night. 00:03:08.62\00:03:10.59 Now another key verse is Revelation 12:1. 00:03:11.09\00:03:15.22 It also contains the three symbols. 00:03:15.42\00:03:18.66 "Now a great sign appeared in heaven: 00:03:18.99\00:03:21.60 "a woman..." 00:03:22.10\00:03:23.43 What does the woman represent? 00:03:23.67\00:03:25.47 The church. 00:03:25.90\00:03:27.24 This uses the three keys words that we find 00:03:40.52\00:03:45.49 in the fourth trumpet. 00:03:45.52\00:03:46.86 The sun, the moon, and the stars. 00:03:46.89\00:03:50.39 Now I don't have time to go into all the details, 00:03:50.93\00:03:53.80 but the sun represents the age of fulfillment. 00:03:53.83\00:03:58.03 In other words, it's when Jesus actually comes in person. 00:03:58.50\00:04:02.04 The moon, on the other hand, represents the period 00:04:02.44\00:04:06.04 of symbols, types, and shadows in the Old Testament 00:04:06.07\00:04:10.41 that pointed forward to the age of fulfillment; 00:04:10.45\00:04:13.25 pointed forward to Christ. 00:04:13.28\00:04:15.38 The stars represent the founders of the Old Testament church 00:04:15.75\00:04:20.62 and the founders of the New Testament church. 00:04:20.66\00:04:23.43 And we know that because there were twelve patriarchs 00:04:23.73\00:04:27.46 that established the Old Testament church 00:04:27.66\00:04:29.90 and there were twelve apostles that Jesus chose 00:04:29.93\00:04:32.77 as the foundation of the New Testament church. 00:04:32.97\00:04:36.10 Now let's talk about the greater light, the sun. 00:04:36.64\00:04:40.01 We're dealing not with the literal object in heaven, 00:04:40.04\00:04:42.81 we're dealing with symbols. 00:04:42.84\00:04:44.48 So we need to find out what the sun symbolizes. 00:04:44.58\00:04:49.15 So who is represented by the sun, the greater light? 00:04:49.35\00:04:54.82 ~ Jesus. - Well, yes, that's correct. 00:04:54.86\00:04:57.13 Let's notice the Bible verses. 00:04:57.16\00:04:59.09 Psalm 27:1 00:04:59.13\00:05:01.93 So who is the light? 00:05:13.41\00:05:15.28 The Lord is the light. 00:05:15.64\00:05:18.11 In other words, the light of the sun represents the Lord, 00:05:18.15\00:05:21.15 it symbolizes the Lord. 00:05:21.18\00:05:22.82 Psalm 84:11 is another key verse. 00:05:23.85\00:05:26.86 It says, "For the LORD God is a..." What? 00:05:27.19\00:05:30.39 So this text explicitly tells us that the Lord God 00:05:40.34\00:05:44.04 is a sun. 00:05:44.07\00:05:45.41 Obviously not a literal sun, but a symbolic sun. 00:05:45.44\00:05:50.38 Malachi 4:2, once again, identifies God as the sun. 00:05:50.98\00:05:56.52 It says, "But to you who fear My name..." 00:05:56.89\00:06:00.26 So in other words, the sun is a person. 00:06:09.73\00:06:11.87 So we have several text that indicate that the Lord 00:06:18.34\00:06:21.34 is the light, the Lord is the sun. 00:06:21.38\00:06:24.55 The sun represents the Lord. 00:06:24.58\00:06:26.85 Now that's the Old Testament. 00:06:27.35\00:06:28.85 Let's take a look at the New Testament. 00:06:28.88\00:06:30.89 John 8:12 00:06:31.59\00:06:33.99 Here, Jesus is going to go to Jerusalem 00:06:34.86\00:06:38.39 for the Feast of Tabernacles. 00:06:38.43\00:06:40.00 And we find Him saying the following words. 00:06:40.23\00:06:43.43 Now Ellen White makes a very interesting remark about 00:06:56.11\00:06:59.71 where Jesus was when He spoke these words in John 8:12. 00:07:00.02\00:07:05.15 In the book, Desire of Ages, pages 463 and 464, 00:07:05.52\00:07:09.62 we find these words. 00:07:09.66\00:07:11.33 "It was morning; the sun had just risen above 00:07:11.99\00:07:16.16 the Mount of Olives, and its rays fell with dazzling 00:07:16.20\00:07:20.57 brightness on the marble palaces, and lighted up the 00:07:20.60\00:07:25.07 gold of the temple walls, when Jesus, pointing to it, said, 00:07:25.11\00:07:30.68 'I am the light of the world.'" 00:07:30.71\00:07:33.55 So Jesus is saying, "That object in heaven symbolizes Me. 00:07:34.18\00:07:39.25 I am the light of the world." 00:07:39.59\00:07:41.29 A little later on, John 9:5, Jesus once again 00:07:41.32\00:07:45.06 made the same declaration. 00:07:45.23\00:07:47.50 He said, "As long as I am in the world, 00:07:47.83\00:07:50.83 I am..." What? "I am light of the world." 00:07:50.87\00:07:55.04 Let's notice a few other verses. 00:07:55.60\00:07:57.07 Revelation 1:16 00:07:57.11\00:07:59.41 We're in the New Testament now. 00:07:59.44\00:08:00.91 The face of Jesus, the glorified Christ, 00:08:01.54\00:08:04.41 shines like what? 00:08:04.61\00:08:06.41 Like the sun. 00:08:06.68\00:08:08.02 Notice... 00:08:08.05\00:08:09.38 Notice John 1:4-9. 00:08:20.50\00:08:23.43 Speaking about Jesus. 00:08:23.83\00:08:25.27 Who is the one who is shining in the darkness? 00:08:33.24\00:08:35.44 Jesus, right? 00:08:35.74\00:08:37.08 So God raised up John the Baptist to give witness to whom? 00:08:53.73\00:08:57.47 To Jesus. 00:08:57.97\00:08:59.30 So was John a lesser light to lead people to a greater light? 00:08:59.33\00:09:03.14 We'll find that explicitly a little bit later on. 00:09:03.24\00:09:06.78 Verse 8, "He was not that light..." 00:09:07.24\00:09:10.65 In other words, he wasn't the sun. 00:09:10.68\00:09:12.31 "...but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 00:09:13.01\00:09:16.28 That was the true Light," that's Jesus... 00:09:16.79\00:09:19.49 This passage certainly tells us that Jesus is the Light. 00:09:23.79\00:09:28.10 But we're going to find that John the Baptist was a light. 00:09:28.56\00:09:32.07 He was a lamp. Or a moon, if you please. 00:09:32.17\00:09:35.80 Now what about when Jesus came to this earth? 00:09:36.30\00:09:39.04 Notice Matthew 4:16. 00:09:39.27\00:09:41.54 "The people who sat in darkness have seen..." What? 00:09:42.58\00:09:46.61 Because Jesus has come. 00:09:47.78\00:09:49.22 "...have seen a great light, and upon those who sat 00:09:49.48\00:09:53.05 in the region and shadow of death Light has..." What? 00:09:53.09\00:09:57.13 "...dawned." 00:09:57.43\00:09:58.76 So once again, the light of the sun 00:09:58.79\00:10:01.40 is related to Jesus. 00:10:01.60\00:10:02.96 It's a symbol of Christ. 00:10:03.00\00:10:05.23 Now when Jesus was going to be born, 00:10:05.93\00:10:09.97 Zacharias described the birth of Jesus 00:10:10.17\00:10:15.04 by using the symbolism of the sun. 00:10:15.08\00:10:17.68 Let's read Luke 1:76-79. 00:10:17.71\00:10:21.28 Now that word, "Dayspring," is composed 00:10:42.50\00:10:45.91 really of two Greek words: anatole helio. 00:10:45.94\00:10:49.38 "Anatole," means, to rise. 00:10:49.98\00:10:52.35 And, "helio", where we get the word, helium, from, 00:10:52.38\00:10:55.02 is the sun. 00:10:55.05\00:10:56.38 So a better translation is, "...through the tender mercy 00:10:56.42\00:11:00.06 with which the rising Sun from on high has visited us." 00:11:00.09\00:11:04.66 So when Jesus comes into the world, He is the what? 00:11:05.23\00:11:08.03 He's the rising sun. 00:11:08.36\00:11:09.86 What did He come for? 00:11:10.37\00:11:11.73 Oh, if the sun rises, it's "to give light to those 00:11:11.77\00:11:15.77 who sit..." Where? 00:11:15.80\00:11:17.14 Another text is 2 Corinthians 4:6. 00:11:23.85\00:11:27.18 "For it is God who commanded light to shine 00:11:27.48\00:11:30.32 out of darkness..." 00:11:30.35\00:11:31.69 1 John 1:5 00:11:39.79\00:11:42.00 Is there any darkness in God? 00:11:42.03\00:11:44.07 Can darkness exist where the sun is? 00:11:46.57\00:11:49.37 Darkness can't exist where the sun is. 00:11:49.90\00:11:52.17 Notice this verse. 00:11:52.21\00:11:53.54 So this has a very important bearing on the fourth trumpet, 00:12:05.85\00:12:10.03 because in the fourth trumpet the lights are eclipsed. 00:12:10.06\00:12:14.90 Partially eclipsed; not totally, but partially eclipsed. 00:12:14.93\00:12:18.90 Notice 1 Peter 2:9. 00:12:19.10\00:12:22.00 Here, Peter is speaking about God's people. 00:12:23.51\00:12:26.17 So what does the sun represent? 00:12:44.89\00:12:47.13 The sun is a symbol of Jesus Christ, the light. 00:12:47.46\00:12:52.73 Now let's see what the spirit of prophecy has to say about this. 00:12:52.77\00:12:55.67 Testimonies to Ministers, page 280. 00:12:56.50\00:12:59.21 "God makes His sun to shine on the just and on the unjust. 00:12:59.61\00:13:04.71 And this sun represents Christ, the Sun of Righteousness, 00:13:05.21\00:13:12.02 who shines as the light of the world, 00:13:12.05\00:13:15.46 giving His blessings and mercies, seen and unseen, 00:13:15.66\00:13:19.16 to rich and poor alike." 00:13:19.19\00:13:21.63 Explicitly, she says this sun represents Christ. 00:13:21.66\00:13:26.23 And where Jesus lives, people live in the light. 00:13:26.84\00:13:31.61 Where Jesus is not present, people are in what? 00:13:32.04\00:13:36.48 In darkness. 00:13:36.68\00:13:38.05 Let's notice the next quotations. 00:13:38.08\00:13:40.98 "Were the Sun of Righteousness to withdraw His beams of light 00:13:41.32\00:13:45.65 from the world, we should be left in..." What? 00:13:45.69\00:13:48.72 "...in the darkness of eternal light." 00:13:49.02\00:13:50.96 So let me ask you, somehow was Christ eclipsed 00:13:50.99\00:13:55.76 during the period of the fourth trumpet? 00:13:55.80\00:13:58.03 Was Jesus eclipsed during the period of the fourth trumpet? 00:13:59.23\00:14:03.61 Absolutely, because a third of the sun is eclipsed. 00:14:03.94\00:14:06.98 Right? 00:14:07.01\00:14:08.34 So let's continue. 00:14:08.38\00:14:09.71 "Jesus spake as never man spake. 00:14:09.81\00:14:13.05 He poured out to men the whole treasure of heaven 00:14:13.35\00:14:15.75 in wisdom and knowledge. 00:14:15.78\00:14:17.49 He is the light that lighteth every man 00:14:17.89\00:14:21.79 who cometh into the world." 00:14:21.82\00:14:24.36 That is, Counsels on Education, pages 78 and 79. 00:14:24.96\00:14:29.43 In the book, Fundamentals of Christian Education, page 183, 00:14:29.63\00:14:33.13 Ellen White wrote, "We should ask the Lord to open 00:14:33.17\00:14:36.00 our understanding, that we may comprehend divine truth. 00:14:36.04\00:14:39.91 If we humble our hearts before God, 00:14:40.18\00:14:42.44 empty them of vanity and pride and selfishness, 00:14:42.91\00:14:46.01 through the grace abundantly bestowed upon us, 00:14:46.05\00:14:48.75 if we sincerely desire and unwaveringly believe, 00:14:49.05\00:14:53.39 the bright beams of the Sun of Righteousness will..." What? 00:14:53.59\00:14:57.89 "...will shine into our minds and illuminate 00:14:58.03\00:15:02.63 our darkened understanding. 00:15:02.66\00:15:04.50 Jesus is the Light that lighteth every man 00:15:04.53\00:15:08.40 that cometh into the world. 00:15:08.44\00:15:09.94 He is the Light of the world, and He bids us 00:15:10.14\00:15:13.51 come unto Him and learn of Him." 00:15:13.54\00:15:16.24 One final quotation, That I May Know Him, page 97. 00:15:17.18\00:15:21.38 "Christ makes no apology when He declares, 00:15:21.62\00:15:24.42 'I am the light of the world.' 00:15:24.45\00:15:26.42 He was, in life and teaching, the gospel..." 00:15:26.65\00:15:29.82 So Jesus is the light in the sense that He is the what? 00:15:30.66\00:15:35.23 He is the gospel, the fulfillment of the gospel. 00:15:35.60\00:15:38.43 "...the foundation of all pure doctrine. 00:15:39.30\00:15:41.97 Just as the sun compares with the lesser lights 00:15:42.00\00:15:45.07 in the heavens, so did Christ, the Source of light, 00:15:45.11\00:15:49.18 compare with the teachers of His day. 00:15:49.34\00:15:51.81 He was before them all, and shining with the 00:15:52.08\00:15:54.92 brightness of the sun, He diffused His penetrating, 00:15:54.95\00:15:59.82 gladdening rays throughout the world." 00:15:59.85\00:16:03.02 So now we know what the sun represents. 00:16:03.43\00:16:05.33 See, you can't understand the darkening of the sun, 00:16:05.36\00:16:07.46 the moon, and a third of the stars without knowing 00:16:07.50\00:16:11.03 what the sun represents, what the moon represents, 00:16:11.07\00:16:13.50 and what the stars represent, right? 00:16:13.54\00:16:15.14 You have to understand first of all what the symbols 00:16:15.17\00:16:17.64 represent or mean. 00:16:17.67\00:16:19.17 Now John the Baptist was a lesser light. 00:16:19.71\00:16:23.24 And by the way, the Old Testament was 00:16:25.01\00:16:27.32 also a lesser light. 00:16:27.35\00:16:29.18 So you have two lesser lights. 00:16:29.98\00:16:31.55 Now if you want a full explanation of this, 00:16:31.59\00:16:33.69 I have a series on the spirit of prophecy, 00:16:34.09\00:16:36.32 Believe His Prophets, is the name of the series, 00:16:37.29\00:16:40.06 where I have an entire presentation on how 00:16:40.10\00:16:42.86 the Old Testament and John the Baptist 00:16:42.90\00:16:44.97 are lesser lights that lead to the time of fulfillment, 00:16:45.00\00:16:48.50 Jesus Christ, the greater light. 00:16:48.54\00:16:50.94 So let's go through this section. 00:16:51.24\00:16:52.81 John the Baptist and the Old Testament were lesser lights... 00:16:52.84\00:16:56.31 Represented by the moon, by the way. 00:16:56.34\00:16:58.28 ...whose purpose was to lead to the greater light, 00:16:58.51\00:17:01.92 the person of Jesus Christ. 00:17:02.15\00:17:04.09 John the Baptist was not the light, 00:17:04.39\00:17:07.39 but he was a light to bear witness to the light. 00:17:07.42\00:17:13.53 Now let's read these statements from the spirit of prophecy. 00:17:13.83\00:17:16.46 Two of them, Desire of Ages, page 220, 00:17:17.03\00:17:19.50 and Review and Herald, April 8, 1873. 00:17:19.53\00:17:22.80 "The prophet John was the connecting link 00:17:23.20\00:17:26.54 between the two dispensations." 00:17:26.57\00:17:28.11 What are the two dispensations? 00:17:28.14\00:17:29.94 The Old and New Testament, right? 00:17:30.68\00:17:32.01 The age of promise and the age of fulfillment. 00:17:32.05\00:17:34.75 "As God's representative, he stood forth to show 00:17:35.12\00:17:38.89 the relation of the law and the prophets 00:17:38.92\00:17:41.46 to the Christian dispensation." 00:17:41.49\00:17:43.22 Law and prophets is Old Testament, 00:17:43.26\00:17:44.89 Christian dispensation is New Testament. 00:17:44.93\00:17:47.10 What was John? "He was the..." What? 00:17:47.50\00:17:49.16 "...the lesser light, which was to be followed by a..." What? 00:17:50.07\00:17:53.27 "...a greater." 00:17:53.30\00:17:54.64 So let me ask you, what is the greater light? 00:17:54.67\00:17:56.17 You know, there's this idea that Ellen White's writings 00:17:56.64\00:17:59.87 are the lesser light to lead to the Bible, the greater light. 00:17:59.91\00:18:03.24 But the greater light we've identified as whom? 00:18:04.05\00:18:06.65 The greater light is Jesus. Exactly. 00:18:06.95\00:18:09.68 Listen, a book cannot contain Jesus. 00:18:09.92\00:18:13.25 Even the Bible is a lesser light that leads people 00:18:14.22\00:18:18.39 to the greater light, who is Jesus Christ. 00:18:18.43\00:18:20.56 So let's continue. 00:18:20.60\00:18:21.93 "John was the lesser light, which was to be 00:18:22.23\00:18:24.90 followed by a greater. 00:18:24.93\00:18:26.70 The mind of John was illuminated by the Holy Spirit 00:18:27.00\00:18:29.84 that he might shed light upon his people; 00:18:29.87\00:18:32.47 but no other light has ever shone or ever will shine 00:18:32.97\00:18:38.45 so clearly upon fallen man as that which emanated 00:18:38.48\00:18:42.05 from the teaching and example of Jesus Christ." 00:18:42.08\00:18:44.45 That is, when He was here. Right? 00:18:44.49\00:18:46.02 When He actually had come. 00:18:46.45\00:18:47.82 "Christ and His mission had been but dimly understood 00:18:48.26\00:18:51.39 as typified in the shadowy sacrifices." 00:18:51.49\00:18:54.36 What were the shadowy sacrifices? 00:18:54.40\00:18:56.36 The sacrifice of the lamb, the Hebrew feasts, etc. 00:18:57.03\00:19:01.04 "Even John had not fully comprehended the future, 00:19:01.40\00:19:04.21 immortal life through the Savior." 00:19:04.51\00:19:07.01 Review and Herald, April 8, 1873. 00:19:08.04\00:19:11.75 "The religion of the Jews, in consequence of their 00:19:11.95\00:19:14.38 departure from God, consisted mostly in ceremony. 00:19:14.42\00:19:17.85 John was the lesser light, which was to be followed 00:19:18.25\00:19:21.72 by a greater light. 00:19:21.76\00:19:23.93 He was to shake the confidence of the people 00:19:24.36\00:19:26.86 in their traditions, and call their sins to their remembrance, 00:19:26.90\00:19:31.17 and lead them to repentance; that they might be prepared 00:19:31.20\00:19:34.54 to appreciate the work of Christ. 00:19:34.57\00:19:36.54 God communicated to John by inspiration, 00:19:36.74\00:19:39.54 illuminating the prophet that he might remove the superstition 00:19:39.74\00:19:43.11 and darkness from the minds of the honest Jews, 00:19:43.14\00:19:46.38 which had been, through false teachings for generations, 00:19:46.41\00:19:49.68 gathering upon them." 00:19:49.72\00:19:52.22 Now in what sense was John the Baptist a lesser light? 00:19:53.25\00:19:56.62 Because we have an issue here. 00:19:56.66\00:19:58.13 John the Baptist is a lesser light, 00:19:58.16\00:20:00.00 and the Old Testament Scriptures are a lesser light. 00:20:00.03\00:20:02.43 So why would you need two lesser lights to lead to Jesus, 00:20:02.46\00:20:06.20 the greater light? 00:20:06.23\00:20:07.90 For a very simple reason. 00:20:08.80\00:20:10.41 Did the Jews of Christ's day understand the lesser light? 00:20:10.87\00:20:14.98 Did they understand the Scriptures? 00:20:15.18\00:20:16.98 Let me ask you, if they had understood the Scriptures, 00:20:17.38\00:20:19.61 would they have accepted Christ even without 00:20:19.81\00:20:22.42 the ministry of John the Baptist? 00:20:22.45\00:20:24.09 Yes. 00:20:24.12\00:20:25.45 Why did God raise up John the Baptist? 00:20:25.49\00:20:27.02 Because they didn't understand the other lesser light. 00:20:27.06\00:20:29.92 So God says, "I'm going to raise up John to point 00:20:30.13\00:20:33.96 to Jesus, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, 00:20:34.00\00:20:37.80 so that they say, 'Hey, wait a minute. 00:20:37.83\00:20:39.53 Let's go back to the Bible and find out, 00:20:39.63\00:20:41.37 because we remember the lamb was sacrificed. 00:20:41.40\00:20:44.01 So this guy must have something to do 00:20:44.04\00:20:45.94 with the sacrifice of the lamb.'" 00:20:45.97\00:20:47.64 Now is the ministry of Ellen White similar to this? 00:20:48.81\00:20:51.71 Are the writings of Ellen White, do they have the purpose 00:20:53.21\00:20:57.72 of leading people to Jesus Christ, the greater light? 00:20:57.75\00:21:01.29 Absolutely. 00:21:01.32\00:21:02.66 Absolutely. Are they a lesser light? 00:21:02.89\00:21:04.93 Yes. 00:21:05.39\00:21:06.73 What is the greater light? The Bible? 00:21:06.76\00:21:08.13 No. The greater light is whom? 00:21:08.46\00:21:10.47 The greater light is Jesus Christ. 00:21:10.57\00:21:12.17 Are you with me or not? 00:21:12.20\00:21:13.54 Now this has been a fundamental misunderstanding 00:21:13.74\00:21:16.24 of many, because they say, "Well, you know, 00:21:16.27\00:21:18.11 the writings of Ellen White are a lesser light," 00:21:18.14\00:21:20.11 and they interpret that as inferior light. 00:21:20.14\00:21:22.71 Of less authority light. 00:21:23.88\00:21:25.85 Ellen White is not less inspired than the Bible. 00:21:26.05\00:21:29.38 Ellen White is not less authoritative than the Bible. 00:21:29.48\00:21:33.46 She has a different function than the Bible. 00:21:33.56\00:21:36.52 Her purpose is to shine on the pages of the Bible 00:21:37.33\00:21:40.43 so that people can understand the Scriptures. 00:21:40.46\00:21:43.10 The other lesser light, if you please. 00:21:44.07\00:21:46.23 Now let's go to the next page, page 100. 00:21:46.57\00:21:50.84 "And when they say to you..." 00:21:52.51\00:21:54.18 In other words, should you go consult the dead 00:22:06.02\00:22:07.79 to know what God's will is? 00:22:07.82\00:22:09.29 How do we discover the truth? 00:22:10.33\00:22:13.90 "To the law..." 00:22:14.33\00:22:15.66 At this stage it would be the writings of Moses 00:22:15.83\00:22:18.23 that are called the law. 00:22:18.27\00:22:19.60 "...and to the testimony..." 00:22:19.87\00:22:21.20 That would be the writings of the prophets up to the time 00:22:21.24\00:22:23.84 when Isaiah is writing. 00:22:23.87\00:22:25.47 So where do you find light? 00:22:31.55\00:22:33.05 You find light in the law and where? 00:22:33.08\00:22:35.45 And in the testimony. 00:22:35.48\00:22:36.82 In the writings of Moses and in the writings of the prophets 00:22:37.09\00:22:40.22 that existed up till that time. 00:22:40.26\00:22:42.49 Is the Word of God a lamp and a light? 00:22:43.32\00:22:46.96 Yes. Psalm 119:105 00:22:47.16\00:22:49.76 "Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path." 00:22:50.33\00:22:56.50 So the Word of God is a lamp. 00:22:56.77\00:22:59.17 It's not the sun, it's a lamp. 00:22:59.51\00:23:01.31 Right? 00:23:01.51\00:23:02.84 Is that a bad thing, that the Word is a lamp? 00:23:03.14\00:23:05.38 No, that's a good thing. 00:23:05.78\00:23:07.12 So the Word of God is a lamp that leads to Jesus, 00:23:09.15\00:23:12.59 the greater light. 00:23:12.62\00:23:13.96 Micah 3:6-7 00:23:13.99\00:23:16.09 Why would the day be dark for them? 00:23:30.21\00:23:32.84 Why would the sun go out in darkness? 00:23:32.87\00:23:34.64 Because the prophets were not pointing to whom? 00:23:34.68\00:23:37.35 They were not pointing to Jesus. 00:23:38.05\00:23:39.95 They were eclipsed, if you please. 00:23:40.05\00:23:42.18 Verse 7... 00:23:42.22\00:23:43.55 So when a prophet speaks and does not point to Christ, 00:23:52.43\00:23:57.20 and does not teach the truth, they are in darkness. 00:23:57.23\00:24:01.30 Now let's notice also that the Old Testament 00:24:01.60\00:24:05.44 is a lesser light that leads to Jesus, the greater light. 00:24:05.47\00:24:10.55 Let's read several text here in John 5:35-36, 00:24:11.21\00:24:17.22 then we'll jump to verses 39-40, and then 45-47. 00:24:17.42\00:24:21.79 "He," that is, John the Baptist, 00:24:22.32\00:24:24.09 "was the burning and shining lamp..." 00:24:24.13\00:24:25.89 So what John the Baptist a lesser light? 00:24:26.03\00:24:28.63 Yeah, he was a lamp, right? 00:24:29.10\00:24:30.50 Did he give light? 00:24:30.53\00:24:33.44 Yes. Because it says he "was a burning and shining lamp, 00:24:33.64\00:24:37.21 and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light." 00:24:37.31\00:24:40.78 So John the Baptist had light. 00:24:40.88\00:24:42.64 What kind of light? 00:24:42.68\00:24:44.05 A lesser light. 00:24:44.58\00:24:45.98 How do we know that? 00:24:46.41\00:24:47.75 Verse 36 says, Jesus is speaking, 00:24:47.78\00:24:49.95 "But I have..." What? "...greater witness..." 00:24:49.98\00:24:53.32 So who is the greater light? 00:24:53.66\00:24:55.16 Jesus. 00:24:55.29\00:24:56.62 And then in verse 39 He says to them, 00:25:06.53\00:25:09.17 "You search the..." What? 00:25:09.20\00:25:11.21 ~ Scriptures. - What Scriptures? 00:25:11.31\00:25:12.81 When Jesus spoke these words there was no New Testament. 00:25:13.64\00:25:15.94 So you're talking about the Old Testament. 00:25:15.98\00:25:18.35 "You search the Scriptures..." He says to the Jews of His day. 00:25:18.38\00:25:21.25 In other words, "They give witness of Me." 00:25:27.16\00:25:29.26 Did John give witness to Jesus? 00:25:29.79\00:25:31.63 Does the Old Testament give witness to Jesus? 00:25:32.13\00:25:34.53 Yes. It continues in verse 40. 00:25:34.56\00:25:37.03 So to whom did Moses give witness? 00:25:54.78\00:25:56.65 Moses gave witness to Jesus. 00:25:57.42\00:25:59.19 Did Abraham give witness to Jesus too? 00:25:59.22\00:26:01.42 John 8:56, Jesus says, "Abraham saw My day, and rejoiced." 00:26:01.62\00:26:06.43 Interesting. 00:26:07.16\00:26:08.50 And then verse 47. 00:26:08.60\00:26:10.17 That is, Moses' writings. 00:26:12.67\00:26:14.10 To whom did Moses point? To Jesus. 00:26:14.44\00:26:17.07 "If you don't believe his writings that point to Me..." 00:26:17.11\00:26:20.21 Also Luke 24:25-27. 00:26:24.61\00:26:28.52 Luke 24:25-27, and then we'll read verses 44-46. 00:26:28.55\00:26:34.69 This is on the road to Emmaus. 00:26:35.22\00:26:38.06 That is, verses 25-27. 00:26:38.09\00:26:40.06 Verses 44-46 is when Jesus is in the upper room 00:26:40.30\00:26:43.57 with the disciples later on that evening. 00:26:43.60\00:26:46.97 "Then He said to them, 'O foolish ones, 00:26:47.40\00:26:49.90 and slow of heart to believe in all the prophets have spoken! 00:26:49.94\00:26:54.24 Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things 00:26:54.84\00:26:57.61 and to enter into His glory?' 00:26:57.65\00:26:59.91 And beginning..." Where? "...at Moses..." 00:27:00.55\00:27:03.55 That would be the law, the Pentateuch. 00:27:03.59\00:27:06.25 You know these three words: Moses, prophets, and Scriptures, 00:27:16.16\00:27:19.40 is really a summary of the entire Old Testament. 00:27:19.53\00:27:22.07 The Jews divided the Old Testament into three parts. 00:27:22.10\00:27:24.91 The first was the Torah, which are the writings of Moses. 00:27:25.04\00:27:29.08 The second are the Nevi'im. 00:27:29.11\00:27:31.35 That's the prophets. 00:27:31.38\00:27:32.75 And the other Scriptures were the Ketuvim. 00:27:32.85\00:27:35.55 So these three words, Jesus is saying, 00:27:36.02\00:27:37.95 "The entire Old Testament points forward to Me." 00:27:37.99\00:27:41.76 And then notice verses 44-46. 00:27:42.09\00:27:45.06 Jesus is with the disciples in the upper room. 00:27:45.09\00:27:47.53 Actually, it ends at verse 45. 00:27:48.00\00:27:49.86 "Then He said to them..." 00:27:49.96\00:27:51.30 To whom did the Psalms give witness? 00:28:09.68\00:28:11.62 To Jesus. 00:28:12.62\00:28:13.96 To whom did the writings of Moses give witness? 00:28:13.99\00:28:15.99 To Jesus. 00:28:16.02\00:28:17.36 To whom did the prophets give witness? Jesus. 00:28:17.39\00:28:19.63 So all of these sources are lesser lights 00:28:19.73\00:28:21.96 that point to whom? 00:28:22.00\00:28:23.43 To Jesus, the greater light. 00:28:23.53\00:28:25.83 And it says in verse 45... 00:28:26.10\00:28:27.77 Did a light go on in their brains 00:28:33.04\00:28:35.61 when they saw that Jesus was a fulfillment 00:28:35.98\00:28:38.58 of everything that the Old Testament pointed to? 00:28:38.61\00:28:41.18 Absolutely. 00:28:41.22\00:28:42.55 Now, not only did John give witness to Jesus, 00:28:42.65\00:28:45.92 but the Scriptures do as well. 00:28:46.32\00:28:48.72 In this sense, both John the Baptist 00:28:49.42\00:28:51.39 and the Old Testament Scriptures are lesser lights 00:28:51.43\00:28:54.33 that give witness to the greater light, Jesus Christ. 00:28:54.53\00:28:57.83 No individual or book can reveal Jesus 00:28:58.27\00:29:04.24 like He reveals Himself in His person. 00:29:04.34\00:29:07.18 The Bible is simply a faint shadow of who Jesus is. 00:29:08.24\00:29:12.21 It's a written description. 00:29:12.25\00:29:13.78 But Jesus in person far surpasses the glory that we find 00:29:13.98\00:29:18.95 in the lesser light, which is the Old Testament 00:29:18.99\00:29:21.76 and the work of John the Baptist. 00:29:21.86\00:29:25.39 Now notice the following statements 00:29:25.43\00:29:27.10 from the spirit of prophecy. 00:29:27.13\00:29:28.56 Desire of Ages, page 211. 00:29:29.43\00:29:31.07 "In every page..." How many? 00:29:31.30\00:29:33.50 Every page. 00:29:34.60\00:29:36.17 "...whether history, or precept, or prophecy, 00:29:36.30\00:29:40.54 the Old Testament Scriptures are irradiated..." 00:29:40.94\00:29:44.31 What does, "irradiated," mean? 00:29:44.61\00:29:46.31 You have the word, "ray," in there, right? 00:29:46.92\00:29:49.45 Irradiated. 00:29:49.48\00:29:51.02 Shine, right? 00:29:52.52\00:29:53.86 "...are irradiated with the glory of the Son of God. 00:29:53.92\00:29:56.99 So far as it was of divine institution, 00:29:57.29\00:29:59.56 the entire system of Judaism was a compacted 00:29:59.59\00:30:03.26 prophecy of the gospel. 00:30:03.30\00:30:04.93 To Christ 'give all the prophets witness.'" 00:30:04.97\00:30:08.04 And then you have, This Day With God, page 246. 00:30:08.74\00:30:11.71 "With the first advent of Christ there was 00:30:11.81\00:30:13.81 ushered in an era of..." What? 00:30:13.84\00:30:16.41 "...greater light and glory." 00:30:17.25\00:30:18.71 So who is the greater light? 00:30:18.75\00:30:20.55 It's the age of fulfillment when Jesus actually comes. 00:30:20.58\00:30:24.42 "But it would indeed be sinful ingratitude to despise 00:30:24.75\00:30:28.02 and ridicule the lesser light because a fuller 00:30:28.06\00:30:32.36 and more glorious light had dawned." 00:30:32.39\00:30:34.13 Are you understanding how Ellen White is defining 00:30:34.16\00:30:37.37 greater and lesser light here? 00:30:37.40\00:30:38.80 So don't let people tell you, "Well, the spirit of prophecy, 00:30:40.44\00:30:42.90 that's only the lesser light. 00:30:42.94\00:30:44.31 So don't worry about what you eat and what you drink. 00:30:44.74\00:30:47.28 You know, that's just Ellen White." 00:30:47.31\00:30:48.64 "Don't worry about how you worship. 00:30:51.11\00:30:52.51 That's just Ellen White. 00:30:52.55\00:30:53.88 She's a lesser light." 00:30:53.92\00:30:55.25 As if lesser means inferior. 00:30:55.58\00:30:57.92 Lesser does not mean inferior. 00:30:58.55\00:31:00.16 It simply means it has a different function. 00:31:01.06\00:31:03.29 She continues, "Those who despise the blessings and glory 00:31:03.86\00:31:06.66 of the Jewish age are not prepared to be benefited 00:31:06.70\00:31:10.07 by the preaching of the gospel." 00:31:10.10\00:31:11.53 That's the New Testament age. 00:31:11.57\00:31:12.97 "The brightness of the Father's glory, and the excellence 00:31:13.34\00:31:16.34 and perfection of His sacred law are only understood through 00:31:16.37\00:31:19.77 the atonement made upon Calvary by His dear Son; 00:31:19.81\00:31:23.28 but even the atonement loses its significance 00:31:23.68\00:31:27.62 when the law of God is rejected." 00:31:27.65\00:31:30.35 And then comes this remarkable statement. 00:31:30.39\00:31:32.35 "What speech is to thought, 00:31:33.22\00:31:35.09 so is Christ to the invisible Father." 00:31:35.36\00:31:37.53 In other words, the Father thinks, and Jesus speaks 00:31:37.56\00:31:40.33 what the Father thought. 00:31:40.36\00:31:41.96 That's amazing. 00:31:42.00\00:31:43.33 "He is the manifestation of the Father, 00:31:43.43\00:31:45.60 and is called the Word of God. 00:31:45.63\00:31:47.90 God sent His Son into the world, His divinity clothed 00:31:48.30\00:31:51.87 with humanity, that man might bear the image 00:31:51.91\00:31:55.04 of the invisible God. 00:31:55.08\00:31:56.71 He made known in His words, His character, 00:31:56.98\00:31:59.91 His power and majesty, the nature and attributes of God. 00:31:59.95\00:32:04.85 Divinity flashed through humanity 00:32:05.32\00:32:07.66 in softening, subduing light. 00:32:07.69\00:32:10.19 He was the embodiment of the law of God, 00:32:10.29\00:32:13.16 which is the transcript of His character." 00:32:13.19\00:32:15.73 So let me ask you, the law is a transcript 00:32:18.03\00:32:21.14 of the character of Jesus, right? 00:32:21.17\00:32:22.74 So what is greater, the transcript or the reality? 00:32:23.04\00:32:26.24 Well of course, the reality. 00:32:26.81\00:32:28.71 If you want to see the law in living color, 00:32:29.14\00:32:32.25 study the life of Jesus who is the greater light. 00:32:32.28\00:32:35.78 The Old Testament presents the basics. 00:32:36.48\00:32:39.59 But it cannot present Christ in all of His glory 00:32:40.19\00:32:42.96 such as we will know Him 00:32:42.99\00:32:44.33 when we enter finally the kingdom. 00:32:44.36\00:32:47.30 Now does the New Testament also give witness to Christ? 00:32:47.96\00:32:50.93 Does the New Testament give witness to Christ as well? 00:32:51.73\00:32:54.64 Yes. So is the New Testament a lesser light? 00:32:54.74\00:32:57.04 Yes. 00:32:58.04\00:32:59.37 Let's read John 21:24-25. 00:32:59.41\00:33:02.84 "This is the disciple who testifies..." 00:33:03.38\00:33:06.45 You know, we have two words: witness and testify. 00:33:08.98\00:33:11.89 Those two words are the same in the Greek language. 00:33:12.59\00:33:15.06 There's one word for, "give witness" 00:33:15.09\00:33:17.33 and "testify", in the Greek. 00:33:17.36\00:33:18.89 So when it says here, John says, "This is the disciple 00:33:18.99\00:33:22.93 who testifies," it means that he gives witness. 00:33:22.96\00:33:25.50 "...and we know that his..." Witness, it can be translated. 00:33:29.87\00:33:34.38 So the Bible is just a basic outline, in other words. 00:33:49.92\00:33:54.66 So does the New Testament give witness to Christ as well? 00:33:54.70\00:33:57.57 Yes. 00:33:57.63\00:33:58.97 How about the spirit of prophecy? 00:33:59.00\00:34:00.37 Does the spirit of prophecy give witness to Jesus? 00:34:00.40\00:34:02.97 Notice this statement from, Review and Herald, 00:34:03.44\00:34:05.97 January 20, 1903. 00:34:06.01\00:34:08.21 "The Lord has sent his people much instruction, 00:34:08.84\00:34:11.38 line upon line, precept upon precept, 00:34:11.41\00:34:14.15 here a little, and there a little. 00:34:14.18\00:34:16.28 Little heed is given to the Bible, and the Lord has given 00:34:16.48\00:34:20.49 a lesser light to lead men and women to the greater light." 00:34:20.52\00:34:24.49 Did the Jews pay little attention 00:34:25.13\00:34:26.80 to the Bible in their day? 00:34:26.83\00:34:28.26 Yes. So what did God do? 00:34:28.83\00:34:30.77 He gave them a lesser light, John the Baptist, 00:34:31.07\00:34:33.34 to lead people to whom? 00:34:33.37\00:34:35.07 To Jesus Christ, the greater light. 00:34:35.10\00:34:37.47 It continues saying, "O, how much good would be accomplished 00:34:37.97\00:34:41.51 if the books containing this light were read 00:34:41.54\00:34:44.45 with a determination to carry out 00:34:44.48\00:34:47.12 the principles they contain!" 00:34:47.15\00:34:49.48 Now, not only are the Scriptures a lesser light, 00:34:50.49\00:34:55.52 but God's people are moons that are supposed to reflect 00:34:55.62\00:35:00.23 the light of Jesus to the world. 00:35:00.26\00:35:01.96 And by the way, where do we find the light of Jesus 00:35:02.06\00:35:04.63 in this world? 00:35:04.67\00:35:06.00 We find it where? 00:35:06.03\00:35:07.37 Oh, we don't see Him personally now, 00:35:07.87\00:35:10.21 so we present Jesus to the world by preaching what? 00:35:10.24\00:35:13.74 By preaching the Bible. 00:35:14.14\00:35:15.64 Which is a lamp or a light to the people in the world. 00:35:15.68\00:35:19.55 So let's notice John 12:34-36. 00:35:19.65\00:35:23.75 Remember, we studied this morning about the water 00:35:59.35\00:36:02.49 that came forth from the rock? 00:36:02.52\00:36:04.13 What happens when you drink the water? 00:36:05.16\00:36:07.00 You become a well or a fountain. 00:36:08.76\00:36:12.53 And then you become a fountain to give water to others. 00:36:13.10\00:36:17.37 Is it the same principle with the light? 00:36:17.41\00:36:20.38 When you receive the light, what do you do? 00:36:20.81\00:36:22.84 You project the light; you're a lesser light 00:36:23.61\00:36:25.75 that gives witness to the greater light. 00:36:25.78\00:36:27.82 So notice Ephesians 5:8-14. The same idea. 00:36:28.32\00:36:33.42 He's speaking to the Ephesians. "...you are..." What? 00:36:39.03\00:36:40.96 So are we the great light? 00:36:43.60\00:36:45.43 No. What are we? 00:36:45.87\00:36:47.20 The lesser light. Giving witness to whom? 00:36:47.37\00:36:49.34 To Jesus. 00:36:49.90\00:36:51.24 What is it that exposes the darkness? 00:37:07.06\00:37:09.32 The light, of course. 00:37:10.63\00:37:12.16 "For it is shameful even to speak of those things 00:37:12.36\00:37:15.23 which are done by them in secret. 00:37:15.26\00:37:16.97 "But all things that are exposed are made 00:37:17.27\00:37:20.10 manifest by the..." What? 00:37:20.14\00:37:21.84 "...by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. 00:37:22.14\00:37:26.01 Therefore He says, 'Awake, you who sleep, 00:37:26.04\00:37:29.51 arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.'" 00:37:29.54\00:37:34.38 So we are like moons that present the Scriptures 00:37:35.95\00:37:42.32 and the spirit of prophecy to point to whom? 00:37:43.26\00:37:46.53 To point to Jesus Christ. 00:37:47.13\00:37:49.66 Now let's continue here. 00:37:50.30\00:37:52.00 Desire of Ages, page 465. 00:37:52.03\00:37:55.00 "As the moon and the stars of the solar system 00:37:55.90\00:37:59.34 shine by the reflected light of the sun, 00:37:59.97\00:38:03.24 so, as far as their teaching is true..." 00:38:03.81\00:38:06.51 Where do we get the teaching from? 00:38:06.55\00:38:08.58 From the Bible and what else? 00:38:09.42\00:38:10.89 As Adventists, from the spirit of prophecy. 00:38:11.32\00:38:14.49 "...so, as far as their teaching is true, 00:38:15.02\00:38:18.06 do the world's great thinkers reflect the rays 00:38:18.46\00:38:22.56 of the Sun of Righteousness. 00:38:22.60\00:38:24.43 Every gem of thought, every flash of the intellect, 00:38:24.77\00:38:28.40 is from the Light of the world." 00:38:28.44\00:38:31.01 And then you have this last statement in this section, 00:38:32.37\00:38:34.98 Reflecting Christ, page 379. 00:38:35.01\00:38:37.58 '"Ye are the light of the world,' 00:38:37.78\00:38:39.68 said Christ to His disciples. 00:38:39.78\00:38:41.58 As the sun goes forth in the heavens, 00:38:41.78\00:38:44.79 dispelling the shades of the night, and filling the world 00:38:44.82\00:38:49.09 with brightness, so must..." Whom? 00:38:49.12\00:38:52.43 "...the followers of Jesus let their light shine 00:38:52.93\00:38:56.97 to dispel the moral darkness of a world lying in sin. 00:38:57.40\00:39:01.00 However, they have no light of themselves; 00:39:01.40\00:39:05.04 it is the light of Heaven that they are to 00:39:05.24\00:39:08.34 reflect to the world." 00:39:08.38\00:39:10.35 Are you catching the picture? 00:39:11.01\00:39:12.35 So now we know what the sun represents. 00:39:13.35\00:39:15.68 We know what the moon represents. 00:39:15.88\00:39:17.92 So what is the meaning of the stars? 00:39:18.32\00:39:21.49 A third of the stars are eclipsed. 00:39:21.52\00:39:24.29 Let's read Daniel 12:3, and then we'll read Daniel 12:10. 00:39:24.89\00:39:30.30 What are we doing here, folks? 00:39:30.57\00:39:32.07 We're using simple prophetic principles 00:39:33.20\00:39:36.71 to interpret the trumpets. 00:39:36.74\00:39:38.41 We're using the same method that we used for the churches, 00:39:38.87\00:39:41.61 the same method that we used for the seals, 00:39:41.64\00:39:43.88 the same method that we used to interpret Daniel chapter 7, 00:39:43.91\00:39:47.08 the beast, and so on. 00:39:47.12\00:39:48.52 We're allowing the Bible to interpret 00:39:49.05\00:39:50.85 the meaning of the symbols. 00:39:50.89\00:39:52.35 It's not rocket science. 00:39:52.92\00:39:54.59 It's actually quite simple when you allow the Bible 00:39:54.62\00:39:57.06 to explain itself. 00:39:57.09\00:39:58.59 Daniel 12:3 00:39:58.89\00:40:01.03 So stars represent God's people, right? 00:40:15.31\00:40:18.38 So notice it continues saying, 00:40:19.21\00:40:20.88 "May shall be purified, made white..." 00:40:20.92\00:40:23.15 And then you have several very insightful statements 00:40:31.69\00:40:35.06 by Ellen White. 00:40:35.10\00:40:36.43 In the book, Prophets and Kings, pages 188 and 189, 00:40:37.23\00:40:41.07 Ellen White is dealing here with the end time 00:40:41.10\00:40:43.47 with those who are faithful to the Lord 00:40:43.51\00:40:45.71 in the big trial ahead. 00:40:45.74\00:40:47.18 "Among earth's inhabitants, scattered in every land, 00:40:47.61\00:40:51.21 there are those who have not bowed the knee to Baal." 00:40:51.71\00:40:54.95 And what does she compare them to? 00:40:55.72\00:40:57.69 "Like the stars of heaven, which appear only at night, 00:40:58.12\00:41:02.66 these faithful ones will shine forth when darkness 00:41:03.09\00:41:07.30 covers the earth and gross darkness the people." 00:41:07.33\00:41:10.20 Will they shine as the sun or will they shine as moons? 00:41:10.87\00:41:14.20 Well, they'll be lesser lights, right? 00:41:14.90\00:41:16.57 Because they're preaching the Scriptures. 00:41:16.60\00:41:18.31 It continues, "In heathen Africa, in the Catholic lands 00:41:19.41\00:41:23.04 of Europe and of South America, in China, in India, 00:41:23.08\00:41:26.72 in the islands of the sea, 00:41:26.92\00:41:28.38 and in all the dark corners of the earth, 00:41:28.58\00:41:30.79 God has in reserve a firmament of chosen ones..." 00:41:30.82\00:41:35.26 What is in the firmament? 00:41:35.36\00:41:36.99 The stars. 00:41:37.63\00:41:38.99 So she says, "...God has in reserve a firmament 00:41:40.03\00:41:42.63 of chosen ones that will yet shine forth amidst the darkness, 00:41:42.66\00:41:47.70 revealing clearly to an apostate world the transforming power 00:41:47.74\00:41:51.67 of obedience to His law. 00:41:51.71\00:41:53.38 Even now they are appearing in every nation, 00:41:53.81\00:41:55.81 among every tongue and people; 00:41:55.84\00:41:57.51 and in the hour of deepest apostasy..." 00:41:57.71\00:42:00.62 That is when it's darkest. 00:42:00.98\00:42:02.75 "...when Satan's supreme effort is made to cause 00:42:02.95\00:42:05.32 'all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond,' 00:42:05.35\00:42:08.92 to receive, under penalty of death, the sign of allegiance 00:42:08.96\00:42:12.46 to a false rest day, these faithful ones, 00:42:12.49\00:42:15.50 'blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke,' 00:42:15.80\00:42:19.73 will 'shine as lights in the world.' 00:42:19.77\00:42:23.27 The darker the night, the more brilliantly will they shine." 00:42:23.30\00:42:28.08 Do you want to be among those? 00:42:28.94\00:42:30.51 We've got to let our light shine, folks, 00:42:31.21\00:42:33.21 like the stars of heaven. 00:42:33.25\00:42:34.75 Here's another one, Maranatha, page 200. 00:42:35.05\00:42:38.05 "Maranatha" was a devotional book many, many years ago. 00:42:38.09\00:42:42.16 "The contest is between the commandments of God 00:42:43.09\00:42:45.49 and the commandments of men. 00:42:45.53\00:42:47.00 In this time the gold will be separated 00:42:47.33\00:42:49.83 from the dross in the church. 00:42:49.86\00:42:51.73 True godliness will be clearly distinguished from 00:42:51.97\00:42:55.57 the appearance and tinsel of it." 00:42:55.60\00:42:58.57 And now notice this. 00:42:59.01\00:43:00.34 "Many a star that we have admired for its brilliancy 00:43:00.38\00:43:06.01 will then go out in darkness." 00:43:06.65\00:43:09.55 Many great individuals that we said, "Man, this person 00:43:10.62\00:43:14.69 can't miss," are going to go out in darkness. 00:43:14.72\00:43:19.16 I pray to the Lord that I'm not one of them every day. 00:43:19.83\00:43:22.36 "Many a star that we have admired for its brilliancy 00:43:23.63\00:43:26.53 will then go out in darkness. 00:43:26.74\00:43:28.27 Chaff like a cloud will be borne away on the wind, 00:43:28.47\00:43:31.54 even from places where we see only floors of rich wheat. 00:43:31.74\00:43:35.41 All who assume the ornaments of the sanctuary..." 00:43:35.88\00:43:38.05 That is the external beauty of the sanctuary. 00:43:38.08\00:43:40.28 "...but are not clothed with Christ's righteousness, 00:43:40.52\00:43:43.42 will appear in the shame of their own nakedness." 00:43:43.45\00:43:47.09 So what do the stars represent? 00:43:47.56\00:43:49.42 They represent God's faithful people that shine 00:43:49.79\00:43:52.49 in the midst of darkness; the darkness of the world. 00:43:52.53\00:43:55.70 At the bottom of page 104, Ellen White referred to John Wycliffe 00:43:56.87\00:44:01.40 as the morning star of the Reformation. 00:44:01.70\00:44:06.47 Now wait a minute. 00:44:06.91\00:44:08.24 Revelation 22:16 says that Jesus is the Morning Star. 00:44:08.38\00:44:12.48 So how can we say Jesus is the Morning Star, 00:44:12.78\00:44:15.38 but Wycliffe is the morning star of the Reformation? 00:44:15.42\00:44:18.52 Well, let's read Ellen White's quotation. 00:44:18.85\00:44:20.92 This Day With God, page 327. 00:44:20.96\00:44:23.43 "Every true believer catches the beams from the Morning Star 00:44:23.89\00:44:28.50 and transmits the light to those who sit in darkness." 00:44:29.20\00:44:32.53 So where did Wycliffe get his rays of light from? 00:44:32.57\00:44:36.60 From THE Morning Star. 00:44:37.21\00:44:39.17 "Not only do they shine amid the darkness 00:44:39.64\00:44:42.14 of their own neighborhood, 00:44:42.18\00:44:43.51 but as a church, they shine forth to regions beyond. 00:44:43.81\00:44:47.72 The Lord expects every man to do his duty. 00:44:47.92\00:44:50.45 Everyone who unites with the church..." 00:44:50.82\00:44:52.95 - How many? ~ Everyone. 00:44:52.99\00:44:55.32 Two people believe this. 00:44:56.79\00:44:58.59 Ha, ha, ha, ha. 00:44:58.63\00:44:59.96 "Everyone who unites with the church 00:45:00.23\00:45:03.03 is to be one with Christ to diffuse the beams 00:45:03.23\00:45:07.90 of the Morning Star, and becoming the light of the world, 00:45:07.94\00:45:11.51 Christ and His people are to be..." What? 00:45:11.54\00:45:14.08 "...co-partners in the great work of saving the world." 00:45:14.11\00:45:18.98 And then we have the statement I read this morning. 00:45:20.52\00:45:22.12 I'm going to read it again because it's powerful. 00:45:22.15\00:45:24.19 "'These things sayeth He that holdeth seven stars 00:45:24.99\00:45:28.12 in His right hand.' 00:45:28.16\00:45:29.49 These words are spoken to..." Whom? 00:45:29.72\00:45:31.99 The seven stars... 00:45:33.23\00:45:34.56 Are you understanding what the seven stars 00:45:34.60\00:45:36.20 in relation to the churches are? 00:45:36.23\00:45:37.87 The seven churches represent what? 00:45:38.40\00:45:41.04 Seven periods of church history. 00:45:41.14\00:45:43.47 The seven stars represent the religious leaders at each stage 00:45:43.84\00:45:48.01 of the history of the church. 00:45:48.14\00:45:49.68 Now in that light we need to see this statement. 00:45:49.94\00:45:53.18 "These words are spoken to the teachers in the church; 00:45:53.92\00:45:57.72 those entrusted by God with weighty responsibilities. 00:45:57.82\00:46:01.66 The sweet influences that are to be abundant in the church 00:46:01.86\00:46:04.83 are bound up with God's..." Whom? 00:46:04.86\00:46:06.83 "...ministers, who are to reveal the love of Christ. 00:46:06.93\00:46:10.60 The stars of heaven are under His control. 00:46:11.13\00:46:13.97 He fills them with light. 00:46:14.30\00:46:16.14 He guides and directs their movements. 00:46:16.50\00:46:18.67 If He did not do this, they would become fallen stars." 00:46:19.07\00:46:22.14 And now she's going to say what the stars represent. 00:46:22.18\00:46:25.01 "So with His ministers. 00:46:25.05\00:46:27.28 They are but instruments in His hands, 00:46:27.48\00:46:29.92 and all the good they accomplish is done through His power. 00:46:30.02\00:46:33.05 Through them His light is to shine forth. 00:46:33.52\00:46:36.73 The Savior is to be their efficiency. 00:46:36.93\00:46:39.33 If they will look to Him as He looked to the Father, 00:46:39.59\00:46:43.23 they will be enabled to do His work. 00:46:43.57\00:46:45.73 As they make God their dependence, 00:46:46.10\00:46:48.14 He will give them His brightness to reflect to the world." 00:46:48.17\00:46:53.17 It's clear? 00:46:54.54\00:46:55.88 So what does the sun represent? 00:46:56.11\00:46:57.98 Jesus Christ, the person of Jesus Christ. 00:46:59.25\00:47:01.45 The age of fulfillment. 00:47:01.48\00:47:02.82 What does the moon represent? 00:47:03.12\00:47:05.09 It represents the Old Testament 00:47:05.59\00:47:07.56 that pointed to Jesus, the greater light. 00:47:07.59\00:47:09.56 John the Baptist who pointed to Jesus, the greater light. 00:47:09.72\00:47:12.99 Ellen White who pointed to Jesus as the greater light. 00:47:13.50\00:47:17.93 Now let's go to the next section. 00:47:18.87\00:47:21.07 The eclipse of the two witnesses. 00:47:22.00\00:47:24.54 Were the two witnesses eclipsed during the 00:47:25.44\00:47:28.64 period of the fourth trumpet? 00:47:28.68\00:47:30.35 Absolutely. 00:47:30.38\00:47:31.71 Now I want you to notice that in Scripture 00:47:31.98\00:47:36.25 the period of the 1260 years is an era of darkness. 00:47:38.39\00:47:43.76 During the period of the papal dominion 00:47:45.66\00:47:48.66 it's a period of darkness. 00:47:48.70\00:47:50.03 Why do you suppose it's called, the Dark Ages? 00:47:50.07\00:47:53.20 Because the sun, moon, and stars have been what? 00:47:55.30\00:47:58.47 Eclipsed. 00:47:58.91\00:48:00.38 Exactly. 00:48:00.41\00:48:01.74 Now let's notice Revelation 11:3. 00:48:01.78\00:48:04.08 "I will give power to my two witnesses..." God says. 00:48:05.01\00:48:08.98 For how long were the two witnesses going to prophesy? 00:48:11.35\00:48:14.22 How were they going to prophesy? 00:48:16.79\00:48:18.99 What color is sackcloth? 00:48:23.47\00:48:25.00 Black. 00:48:27.90\00:48:29.24 Let's read the next two verses and you'll see it. 00:48:31.41\00:48:33.98 Isaiah 50:3 00:48:34.41\00:48:36.18 That's what you call a synonymous parallelism, 00:48:44.49\00:48:47.32 where the second line is a repetition 00:48:47.36\00:48:49.72 of the same thought as the first line in different words. 00:48:49.76\00:48:52.69 So, "I clothed the heavens with..."
