nothing more than what
has become an empty tradition.

our parents, or our ancestors,

really aren't in the Scriptures,

part of the Christian faith,

and yet we do it simply because
that's been the tradition

in our family, that's
been the tradition in our life.

the prayer on David's heart,

that question, and there are

"What is truth?"
Well, the Bible gives it

to us in 3 very
short and concise ways.

I love the Bible
because it's so practical.

In John 14:6 Jesus said:
"I am the way, the truth,"

"and the life."
If we follow Jesus

and line up what we
believe with what Jesus did,

and what Jesus taught,
we know we're going to be

following truth
because Jesus was truth,

but also, the Bible shows
us in John 17:17, it says:

"Sanctify them through
Thy truth, Thy word is truth,"

speaking of the Holy Scriptures.

So once again, we open up
the Bible because we believe

it is the truth of heaven for
our life, we want to make sure

what we're doing is in
accordance with Scripture.

it says: "Thy righteousness"

"is an everlasting
righteousness, and Thy law"

"is the truth." So
that's why we've been

looking at the 10 commandments
because the Bible says

the commandments are truth,
and therefore we want to make

sure we're following
what the commandments say.

These 3 definitions:
Jesus, the Word, and the Law,

Bible says is truth.

at this idea of Sunday keeping,

the tradition of people
going to church on Sunday,

and we're going to see if
it lines up with what the Bible

says it truth, if it lines
up with the Word and example

of Jesus, if it lines up
with Scripture, if it lines up

with the law of God,
and we're going to make sure

that we find out the
truth on this subject.

we want to preach the truth

not trying to find our way out

of God, remember that truth

Truth is not hard to learn,
what can be hard is to unlearn

want to follow the will of God,

not to do it because the mind

of doing something if they don't

rather trying to find out

what the will of God is so
that we can do it for our life.

Turn with me to John
20 in the Scriptures.

John 20 is our first
text, and the reason we're going

to John 20 is that many
people say: "Well I thought"

"that right after the
resurrection of Jesus"

"they were keeping Sunday
and therefore we should keep"

"Sunday now." I know a
lot of people say that,
00:06:19.23\00:06:21.98
but it doesn't
necessarily make it right.
00:06:22.01\00:06:23.87
So let's go to the
place in the Bible where they

often get that from, John 20:19.

There are 8 texts in the
New Testament that mention

the first day of the
week. The day that we would call
00:06:35.36\00:06:37.87
in our English
language "Sunday", but the Bible

calls it the first day of the
week and there's only 8 of them.

We're going to look at all of
them tonight just to make sure

that we're being very fair,
we're being open and honest,

and we're looking at
both sides of this issue.

that means they were meeting

"for fear of the Jews."
They were scared for their life.

leadership and the Romans

had done to their leader,
Jesus, and they were afraid

for themselves. So
no, they weren't assembled

the resurrection, in fact,

believe that Jesus had risen

That's why in Mark 16:14

appeared He scolded them

for their unbelief because
they did not believe them

He had risen, so they couldn't

the resurrection if they hadn't

even believed in the
resurrection at that time,

any sense, would it?

about the Sunday being sacred,

being changed from Saturday

to Sunday, so we've got to
keep looking if we want evidence

sacredness in the Bible.

So now Paul, he knows that
the church there is keeping

the Sabbath, and he's simply

to do their bookkeeping
on the first day of the week.

It was the practice
of the Christian church

to lay aside the things of
the world when the Sabbath hours

came, and they would
honor God's sacred day,

and then after the Sabbath it
would be the perfect opportunity

to add things up, to do your
bookkeeping we would say today,

see how God prospered
them that previous week,

and lay aside some for the poor.

It was an excellent time to
do it, so what Paul was really

Sunday being sacred at all.

In fact, the Bible verse
proves the exact opposite.

preaching of the gospel

it's the presence of God

Some people might insist
it was a communion service,

across land to meet the ship

where he boarded the ship.

outside and he went across,

took a shortcut, 20 mile
walk, and joined the ship.

Here's something that
I want you to consider:

this was not the practice of
the Sabbath keepers to do this.

It was the practice of Sabbath
keepers, especially in Paul's

day and many also today,
that on the Sabbath it's a day

of rest. It
doesn't mean you can't take

a hike, but it means that
you do have a time of rest.

The Sabbath keepers were not
known to go on a secular journey

or go on an ordinary journey
across land, some 20 miles,

on the Sabbath.
Paul kept the Sabbath,

and then because he knew he
was departing, because he knew

wouldn't see these people again,

fellowship through the night

So here's our conclusion:

an ordinary day of travel
