In 1980, the United States' Supreme Court 00:00:18.71\00:00:25.92 ruled that it is no longer constitutional 00:00:25.95\00:00:30.56 to post the Ten Commandments on the classroom wall. 00:00:30.59\00:00:36.84 And then just a short time ago, 00:00:36.87\00:00:40.66 we watched the unfolding saga of Judge Roy Moore, 00:00:40.69\00:00:46.01 chief justice of the state of Alabama Supreme Court. 00:00:46.04\00:00:51.70 Moore against the United States government 00:00:51.73\00:00:55.53 and the issue was a monument of the Ten Commandments 00:00:55.56\00:00:59.94 in the Alabama court house. 00:00:59.97\00:01:03.59 And once again the Ten Commandments lost 00:01:03.62\00:01:07.54 and I can still see those US marshals 00:01:07.57\00:01:11.54 rolling out that big stone monument of the law of God. 00:01:11.57\00:01:17.89 And it kind of gives us a window, 00:01:17.92\00:01:20.85 an insight into the major battle outlined 00:01:20.88\00:01:25.11 in the Book of Revelation for the end times. 00:01:25.14\00:01:29.99 As we've learned the real issue 00:01:30.02\00:01:32.06 is the challenge of God's authority 00:01:32.09\00:01:34.78 as the Creator of the heavens and the earth. 00:01:34.81\00:01:38.84 Satan, that dragon wants to establish himself 00:01:38.87\00:01:42.22 on God's throne but he knew that before 00:01:42.25\00:01:45.17 he could ever secure the allegiance 00:01:45.20\00:01:47.46 of any man or woman on this earth, 00:01:47.49\00:01:49.73 he had to somehow undermine the authority of God 00:01:49.76\00:01:53.95 as the Creator of the heavens and the earth. 00:01:53.98\00:01:58.87 And we saw how the theory of evolution 00:01:58.90\00:02:01.97 has made inroads into almost every fabric of society 00:02:02.00\00:02:06.46 today undermining God's authority. 00:02:06.49\00:02:09.48 But long before that, Satan knew that there was 00:02:09.51\00:02:12.40 another major obstacle in the way 00:02:12.43\00:02:14.96 before he could ever pave the way 00:02:14.99\00:02:17.12 for undermining God's authority with the theory of evolution, 00:02:17.15\00:02:21.47 he knew that God has established the monument, 00:02:21.50\00:02:24.60 a memorial, a reminder carved through the channels of time, 00:02:24.63\00:02:30.32 the Sabbath day pointing to God 00:02:30.35\00:02:33.03 as the Creator of the heavens and the earth 00:02:33.06\00:02:35.47 and he knew that as long as men and women 00:02:35.50\00:02:37.56 remembered the Sabbath day, they would never, 00:02:37.59\00:02:41.52 never give their allegiance 00:02:41.55\00:02:44.61 to the beast instead of the Creator. 00:02:44.64\00:02:50.43 And so as we learned, it began to attack the very law of God 00:02:50.46\00:02:54.47 because Daniel 7:25 says, in the last days 00:02:54.50\00:02:58.40 that little horn who is the beast or the antichrist 00:02:58.43\00:03:01.54 would try to change God's set times and laws 00:03:01.57\00:03:06.45 and we saw dramatic unfolding of that prophecy 00:03:06.48\00:03:09.88 when the little horn, the Medieval church of Rome 00:03:09.91\00:03:13.36 officially decreed the Sabbath has been changed 00:03:13.39\00:03:16.32 from the seventh day to the first 00:03:16.35\00:03:18.10 attacking the times, set times and the laws of God. 00:03:18.13\00:03:24.02 And I hope you're beginning to see how all of this 00:03:24.05\00:03:26.50 fits into the picture of Revelation. 00:03:26.53\00:03:30.75 Because it was just a preview of the prophecy in Revelation 12, 00:03:30.78\00:03:35.96 "When the dragon saw he had been hurled to the earth, 00:03:35.99\00:03:38.83 he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child." 00:03:38.86\00:03:43.41 And in verse 17, "The dragon was angry at the woman 00:03:43.44\00:03:47.06 and went off to make war against the rest of her offspring, 00:03:47.09\00:03:51.10 those who obey God's commandments 00:03:51.13\00:03:53.49 and hold to the testimony of Jesus." 00:03:53.52\00:03:55.74 At the end of this section describing that war, 00:03:55.77\00:03:58.81 he says in Chapter 14:12, 00:03:58.84\00:04:01.41 "This calls for patient endurance 00:04:01.44\00:04:03.95 on the part of the saints who obey God's commandments 00:04:03.98\00:04:07.60 and remain faithful to Jesus." 00:04:07.63\00:04:09.55 So the law of God and the gospel of Jesus Christ 00:04:09.58\00:04:12.89 are like bookends on both sides of this chapter 00:04:12.92\00:04:16.98 unfolding the war between the dragon 00:04:17.01\00:04:19.43 and the people of God. 00:04:19.46\00:04:20.88 The object of the antichrist attack is the law of God 00:04:20.91\00:04:26.72 and the cross the gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:04:26.75\00:04:34.20 It saddened me to know that our country 00:04:34.23\00:04:41.45 would oppose the Ten Commandments of God 00:04:41.48\00:04:49.41 but it saddens me even more when I see the war 00:04:49.44\00:04:56.41 against the Ten Commandments 00:04:56.44\00:04:59.45 sounding from Christian pulpits. 00:04:59.48\00:05:05.50 Now you say, I've never heard it 00:05:05.53\00:05:08.84 from a Christian pulpit, you have. 00:05:08.87\00:05:13.41 Haven't you heard that the Ten Commandments 00:05:13.44\00:05:15.47 were for the Jews and in the New Testament, 00:05:15.50\00:05:17.97 we don't have the Ten Commandments, we have love, 00:05:18.00\00:05:21.38 haven't you heard that the law was Old Testament, 00:05:21.41\00:05:24.28 New Testament is done away with. 00:05:24.31\00:05:26.26 Haven't you heard that we're saved by grace 00:05:26.29\00:05:28.94 through faith in Jesus Christ 00:05:28.97\00:05:30.84 and since we were under grace and no longer under the law, 00:05:30.87\00:05:34.76 then we're no longer obligated to obey the law. 00:05:34.79\00:05:39.68 Billy Graham heard it. 00:05:39.71\00:05:42.48 In his article, this was from the Dallas Times 00:05:42.51\00:05:48.49 in Herald Newspaper, 14 July, 1995. 00:05:48.52\00:05:55.04 Question to Billy Graham, 00:05:55.07\00:05:56.86 Some religious people I know tell me 00:05:56.89\00:05:58.82 that the Ten Commandments are part of the law 00:05:58.85\00:06:00.95 and do not apply to us today. 00:06:00.98\00:06:02.70 They say we as Christians 00:06:02.73\00:06:04.32 are free from the law, is that right? 00:06:04.35\00:06:06.97 Answer, Billy Graham. 00:06:07.00\00:06:08.49 No, it is not right 00:06:08.52\00:06:10.43 and I hope you'll not be misled by these false opinions. 00:06:10.46\00:06:15.17 Billy Graham heard it that the law has been done away with 00:06:15.20\00:06:18.33 and he called it a false opinion. 00:06:18.36\00:06:21.69 But didn't Jesus say that I give you 00:06:21.72\00:06:25.23 a new command that you love one another? 00:06:25.26\00:06:30.84 And that you love the Lord your God 00:06:30.87\00:06:32.49 with all of your heart and all of your soul? 00:06:32.52\00:06:36.25 Well, John says in the little book of 2 John, 00:06:36.28\00:06:41.47 only one Chapter, so 2 John 5, he says, 00:06:41.50\00:06:44.96 "Now I'm not writing you a new command 00:06:44.99\00:06:46.85 but one that we've had from the beginning, 00:06:46.88\00:06:50.31 I ask that we love one another." 00:06:50.34\00:06:53.98 Now Jesus said, I give you a new command 00:06:54.01\00:06:58.13 that we love one another. 00:06:58.16\00:07:00.57 John says, I'm not writing you a new command 00:07:00.60\00:07:04.25 but one that we've had from the beginning. 00:07:04.28\00:07:09.19 Jesus said love the Lord your God 00:07:09.22\00:07:10.68 with all of your heart, this is new. 00:07:10.71\00:07:14.15 John says this is not new. 00:07:14.18\00:07:17.70 So who is right, Jesus or John? 00:07:17.73\00:07:23.59 They're both right. 00:07:23.62\00:07:26.11 You say, how can they both be right. 00:07:26.14\00:07:29.13 Jesus said is new, John said it wasn't new, 00:07:29.16\00:07:32.68 the truth is it wasn't new. 00:07:32.71\00:07:34.99 When Jesus said, love the Lord your God 00:07:35.02\00:07:36.62 with all of your heart and all of your soul, 00:07:36.65\00:07:38.12 He was quoting the Old Testament, 00:07:38.15\00:07:39.66 Deuteronomy 6:5, wasn't new. 00:07:39.69\00:07:45.28 When Jesus said, love your neighbor as yourself, 00:07:45.31\00:07:48.33 He was quoting the Old Testament, 00:07:48.36\00:07:50.90 Leviticus 19:18, it wasn't new. 00:07:50.93\00:07:54.71 So why did he say I give you a new command, 00:07:54.74\00:07:56.67 love one another 00:07:56.70\00:07:59.23 because it was new to them. 00:07:59.26\00:08:06.48 You see they have lost sight of the fact 00:08:06.51\00:08:08.12 that God's commandments are laws of love. 00:08:08.15\00:08:16.09 It's easy to overlook this if you don't know Greek. 00:08:16.12\00:08:20.28 Because in Greek there are two different words for new. 00:08:20.31\00:08:24.35 Neos, new, Kainos, new. 00:08:24.38\00:08:28.40 Neos, brand new. Kainos, new to the person. 00:08:28.43\00:08:35.67 Now, about a year ago, our car broke 00:08:35.70\00:08:43.06 and I had to go by a new car. 00:08:43.09\00:08:47.72 Now when we buy a new car, 00:08:47.75\00:08:50.38 we don't go into the dealer showroom 00:08:50.41\00:08:53.93 and look at all these brand new shiny vehicles 00:08:53.96\00:08:57.53 with two miles on the odometer. 00:08:57.56\00:09:01.23 We go next door to the preowned car lot. 00:09:01.26\00:09:07.08 They don't sell used cars anymore, you know that? 00:09:07.11\00:09:10.42 They're preowned cars. 00:09:10.45\00:09:13.53 So we go to the preowned car lot 00:09:13.56\00:09:16.67 and pick out a new car, Kainos, 00:09:16.70\00:09:22.91 because it's new for me. 00:09:22.94\00:09:25.73 And when we drove that new little Toyota RAV4 home, 00:09:25.76\00:09:30.07 my neighbors saw me just turning into the road 00:09:30.10\00:09:33.28 and he says, oh, Jack, you got a new car. 00:09:33.31\00:09:36.09 Yeah, man, I got a new car. 00:09:36.12\00:09:37.95 Kainos, new car. 00:09:37.98\00:09:42.96 But it wasn't neos, brand new, 00:09:42.99\00:09:47.45 because it was preowned. 00:09:47.48\00:09:50.90 And so Jesus said, I give you a new command, kainos. 00:09:50.93\00:09:57.46 John says I'm not writing you something new, neos, 00:09:57.49\00:10:02.60 that you love one another. 00:10:02.63\00:10:05.55 So you see it was new to them, 00:10:05.58\00:10:08.85 they had lost sight of the fact 00:10:08.88\00:10:11.06 that God's law is the law of love. 00:10:11.09\00:10:16.00 In fact, John goes on to say, 00:10:16.03\00:10:18.03 I'm not writing you a new command, neos, new, 00:10:18.06\00:10:21.29 but one that we've had from the beginning, it's kainos new. 00:10:21.32\00:10:25.48 I ask you that we love one another 00:10:25.51\00:10:27.76 and this is love that we walk 00:10:27.79\00:10:29.37 in obedience to his commands. 00:10:29.40\00:10:31.01 What is love? 00:10:31.04\00:10:32.57 Love is obedience to the commandments of God. 00:10:32.60\00:10:36.27 In other words, in mathematical formula is 00:10:36.30\00:10:38.54 love equals obedience to the commandments of God. 00:10:38.57\00:10:42.91 But in the very same letter, 1 John 4:16, 00:10:42.94\00:10:46.30 the Bible says God is love. God is love. 00:10:46.33\00:10:53.71 Love is obeying the commandments. 00:10:53.74\00:10:58.17 Now I learned in algebra I think it was. 00:10:58.20\00:11:03.07 Long time ago that two things that are equal 00:11:03.10\00:11:08.11 to a third thing have to be equal to each other. 00:11:08.14\00:11:13.50 Isn't that right? 00:11:13.53\00:11:15.16 You don't understand that is right. 00:11:15.19\00:11:18.45 Check your books. 00:11:18.48\00:11:20.00 Two things that are equal to a third thing 00:11:20.03\00:11:22.49 have to be equal to each other. 00:11:22.52\00:11:24.98 Now if God is love and love is obeying 00:11:25.01\00:11:32.34 the commandments of God and two things equal 00:11:32.37\00:11:35.96 to a third thing have to be equal to each other. 00:11:35.99\00:11:38.16 God is love, obeying the commandments of God is love, 00:11:38.19\00:11:41.04 then obeying the commandments 00:11:41.07\00:11:43.15 is some kind of a description of what God is like. 00:11:43.18\00:11:49.56 And since he made us in his image, 00:11:49.59\00:11:52.85 it describes what love is like for us. 00:11:52.88\00:11:57.43 You see we learned that God functions with laws. 00:11:57.46\00:12:00.84 When he created the universe, he had physical laws, 00:12:00.87\00:12:03.49 the law of centrifugal force, the law of gravity, 00:12:03.52\00:12:05.93 the law of centripetal force, all these physical laws 00:12:05.96\00:12:09.29 that hold the universe together. 00:12:09.32\00:12:11.05 And if one of those laws fail, 00:12:11.08\00:12:13.00 then the whole thing comes crashing down. 00:12:13.03\00:12:16.87 But when he made the man and the woman, 00:12:16.90\00:12:18.76 he made them according to certain laws. 00:12:18.79\00:12:22.01 And he says this is the way I made you 00:12:22.04\00:12:24.47 and he defined those principles, those laws of love, 00:12:24.50\00:12:28.07 it was like a circle and he said if you stay inside the circle, 00:12:28.10\00:12:31.82 you're gonna have peace and joy and happiness, 00:12:31.85\00:12:34.27 but if you step outside of the circle, 00:12:34.30\00:12:36.21 you're gonna break and you're gonna suffer 00:12:36.24\00:12:39.90 and a lot of other people are gonna get hurt too. 00:12:39.93\00:12:43.29 That's the purpose for God's laws not because He's mean, 00:12:43.32\00:12:46.57 He doesn't want us to have fun, 00:12:46.60\00:12:48.32 but He knows that if we step outside of the circle, 00:12:48.35\00:12:50.59 we're gonna get hurt. 00:12:50.62\00:12:53.31 He loves us and He wants us to enjoy 00:12:53.34\00:12:55.22 love and peace and happiness. 00:12:55.25\00:12:57.96 His law defines love for us. 00:12:57.99\00:13:01.51 Paul made that clear in Romans 13. 00:13:01.54\00:13:06.24 Romans 13, he says, 00:13:06.27\00:13:08.32 "Let no debt remain outstanding, 00:13:08.35\00:13:10.01 except the continuing debt to love one another, 00:13:10.04\00:13:13.33 for he who loves his fellowmen has fulfilled the law." 00:13:13.36\00:13:19.12 Now if we would have stop here, we can say well, 00:13:19.15\00:13:21.34 you don't have to obey the law, 00:13:21.37\00:13:22.40 you just need to love one another. 00:13:22.43\00:13:25.54 But Paul didn't stop there, so we shouldn't either. 00:13:25.57\00:13:29.96 He goes on to say, 00:13:29.99\00:13:32.05 "He who loves his fellowmen has fulfilled the law." 00:13:32.08\00:13:34.98 Well, how come? Because, verse 9, 00:13:35.01\00:13:37.06 The commandments, do not commit adultery, 00:13:37.09\00:13:39.04 do not murder, do not steal, do not covet 00:13:39.07\00:13:41.29 and whatever other commandment that may be, 00:13:41.32\00:13:43.34 they are all summed in this one rule, 00:13:43.37\00:13:45.54 love your neighbor as yourself. 00:13:45.57\00:13:49.38 Love does no harm to its neighbors 00:13:49.41\00:13:51.15 therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. 00:13:51.18\00:13:56.49 So Paul is saying that if we love one another, 00:13:56.52\00:13:59.36 we're fulfilling the law. 00:13:59.39\00:14:00.97 He's not saying you don't have to do the law. 00:14:01.00\00:14:04.22 He's saying the commandments, thou shalt not murder, 00:14:04.25\00:14:06.69 covet, steal, these are the Ten Commandments 00:14:06.72\00:14:10.17 and they're all summed up in this one rule, 00:14:10.20\00:14:12.89 love your neighbor as yourself. What does that mean? 00:14:12.92\00:14:14.65 We need to do a little math again. 00:14:14.68\00:14:16.80 You have to know some math to understand the Bible. 00:14:16.83\00:14:19.78 What does summed up mean? It means added together. 00:14:19.81\00:14:23.35 So if you take the commandment 00:14:23.38\00:14:24.53 that says thou shalt not lie and add to it, 00:14:24.56\00:14:27.52 thou shalt not steal and add to it, 00:14:27.55\00:14:29.95 thou shalt not kill, and add to it, 00:14:29.98\00:14:32.51 thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain 00:14:32.54\00:14:35.29 and add to it, honor thy father and mother and add to it 00:14:35.32\00:14:38.33 any other commandment that may be, 00:14:38.36\00:14:41.35 it equals love. 00:14:41.38\00:14:47.45 What happens if you take one away? 00:14:47.48\00:14:50.81 And you don't have love anymore? 00:14:50.84\00:14:53.07 Does a man really love his neighbors 00:14:53.10\00:14:55.68 if he's having an affair with his neighbor's wife? 00:14:55.71\00:14:59.27 Does he love his neighbor? 00:14:59.30\00:15:00.84 He says Hallelujah, neighbor, oh, praise the Lord, 00:15:00.87\00:15:02.58 I love you so much while he's slipping his wallet 00:15:02.61\00:15:05.03 from his pocket, is that love? 00:15:05.06\00:15:08.83 See, love is defined by the law of God 00:15:08.86\00:15:14.19 and if you take away one, it doesn't equal love anymore. 00:15:14.22\00:15:20.33 James made that crystal clear in the little book of James 2. 00:15:20.36\00:15:26.82 James 2:10, "Whoever keeps the whole law 00:15:26.85\00:15:31.82 and yet stumbles at just one point 00:15:31.85\00:15:36.58 is guilty of breaking all of it. 00:15:36.61\00:15:40.55 Because he who said do not commit adultery 00:15:40.58\00:15:42.25 also said do not murder. 00:15:42.28\00:15:44.26 And if you do not commit adultery 00:15:44.29\00:15:45.70 but you do commit murder, 00:15:45.73\00:15:47.00 you have become a law breaker." 00:15:47.03\00:15:50.78 So according to James, love only happens 00:15:50.81\00:15:55.51 when we obey all of God's commandments 00:15:55.54\00:15:59.37 and if we just break one, 00:15:59.40\00:16:01.91 it's the same as breaking them all, why? 00:16:01.94\00:16:04.47 Because the commandments are like a circle, 00:16:04.50\00:16:06.50 they define what love and peace and joy 00:16:06.53\00:16:09.02 and happiness is for us. 00:16:09.05\00:16:10.47 And if we just step outside of the circle by breaking one, 00:16:10.50\00:16:13.35 we don't have love anymore, 00:16:13.38\00:16:14.86 we suffer and other people get hurt. 00:16:14.89\00:16:17.08 You see God isn't out there just trying to prevent us 00:16:17.11\00:16:21.07 from enjoying life, He's out there trying to help us 00:16:21.10\00:16:24.60 to enjoy life to the fullest with love. 00:16:24.63\00:16:29.72 And if we just break one, 00:16:29.75\00:16:31.38 we're guilty of breaking them all. 00:16:31.41\00:16:34.93 And then he makes a fascinating statement to the church. 00:16:34.96\00:16:40.40 James said in verse 12, 00:16:40.43\00:16:42.10 "Speak and act then as those who are going 00:16:42.13\00:16:46.82 to be judged by the law that gives freedom." 00:16:46.85\00:16:54.44 Interesting, he refers to the Ten Commandments says 00:16:54.47\00:16:56.60 the law that gives freedom because folks, 00:16:56.63\00:16:58.83 you're only free to the degree 00:16:58.86\00:17:00.62 that you bring your life in harmony with the law of God. 00:17:00.65\00:17:04.28 If a person steals, is he free? 00:17:04.31\00:17:07.49 If one commits adultery, are they free? 00:17:07.52\00:17:12.15 If one murders, are they free? 00:17:12.18\00:17:15.43 Your freedom only comes to the degree 00:17:15.46\00:17:17.29 that we're in harmony with the way God made us to live. 00:17:17.32\00:17:21.86 If we break one, we're guilty of breaking them all 00:17:21.89\00:17:24.19 but look at this other piece. 00:17:24.22\00:17:25.53 It says speak and act as those who are going 00:17:25.56\00:17:28.48 to be judged by the law. 00:17:28.51\00:17:33.67 So James sees the time when God's Christian believers 00:17:33.70\00:17:40.44 are going to be judged and the standard 00:17:40.47\00:17:43.27 of that judgment is the law of God. 00:17:43.30\00:17:47.16 Now why is that? 00:17:47.19\00:17:48.94 Because God as we learned is gonna make 00:17:48.97\00:17:51.39 this world over again. 00:17:51.42\00:17:52.54 There'll be a new heaven and a new earth. 00:17:52.57\00:17:54.45 He's gonna make it all over. 00:17:59.20\00:18:02.87 And he's gonna let us into the city 00:18:02.90\00:18:05.69 and we're gonna live there. 00:18:05.72\00:18:09.57 But only those who trust Him enough 00:18:09.60\00:18:13.79 to live within inside of the circle 00:18:13.82\00:18:19.06 because God is not gonna let this mess happen all over again. 00:18:19.09\00:18:24.55 That's why He selected us to who can go in. 00:18:27.51\00:18:30.75 So does God still want us 00:18:35.94\00:18:38.87 to order our lives according to the law? 00:18:38.90\00:18:43.80 Ask Jesus, can you trust Him? 00:18:43.83\00:18:47.00 Jesus, is this true? Matthew 5. 00:18:47.03\00:18:53.73 Jesus, everybody is trying to say 00:18:53.76\00:18:55.60 that we're under grace now, we're not under law 00:18:55.63\00:18:57.59 because you abolished it when you died on the cross, 00:18:57.62\00:18:59.70 is that true? 00:18:59.73\00:19:01.75 And Jesus said, verse 17, 00:19:01.78\00:19:04.49 "Do not think that I come to abolish 00:19:04.52\00:19:06.57 the Law or the Prophets." 00:19:06.60\00:19:09.42 Is that hard to understand? 00:19:09.45\00:19:10.98 Do not think I've come to abolish the law. 00:19:13.00\00:19:18.26 I haven't come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 00:19:18.29\00:19:22.24 So don't even think of I've come abolish it. 00:19:22.27\00:19:24.55 We ought to be able to stop right here and be done. 00:19:24.58\00:19:28.86 Don't even think it. 00:19:28.89\00:19:30.08 If somebody says to you you're not in the law anymore, 00:19:30.11\00:19:31.92 you don't have to obey the Ten Commandments, 00:19:31.95\00:19:33.12 don't even think that. 00:19:33.15\00:19:35.59 Why not? Because Jesus said don't think that. 00:19:35.62\00:19:39.08 He said I haven't come to abolish the law. 00:19:39.11\00:19:41.52 I've come to fulfill them. 00:19:41.55\00:19:42.88 What does it mean? 00:19:42.91\00:19:43.94 He came to fulfill them, because we've learned 00:19:43.97\00:19:45.92 that God expects us to be perfectly obedient to law, 00:19:45.95\00:19:48.55 break one, you break them all. 00:19:48.58\00:19:52.36 He wants us to be perfectly obedient 00:19:52.39\00:19:54.77 but he also knows that we can't do it 00:19:54.80\00:19:56.76 because we've all already broken the law, 00:19:56.79\00:19:58.66 we've all sinned and even if we try, 00:19:58.69\00:20:00.71 even our good deeds are like filthy rags compared to God. 00:20:00.74\00:20:04.75 He knows we can't do it. 00:20:04.78\00:20:06.27 So Jesus came and He kept the law for us. 00:20:06.30\00:20:11.38 He fulfilled it perfectly. 00:20:11.41\00:20:13.11 He never sinned, not one moment 00:20:13.14\00:20:15.83 and He became sin for us, He took our sin 00:20:15.86\00:20:18.35 and gives us His righteousness 00:20:18.38\00:20:20.30 through the cross of Jesus Christ, 00:20:20.33\00:20:22.08 He gives us His perfect obedience to the law. 00:20:22.11\00:20:24.97 No, He didn't come to abolish it, 00:20:25.00\00:20:26.93 He came to fulfill it. 00:20:26.96\00:20:30.19 So He could give it to you. 00:20:30.22\00:20:33.00 So when God says, why should I let you in to that city. 00:20:33.03\00:20:35.97 You say, because of the perfect obedience 00:20:36.00\00:20:39.09 that Jesus gave to me and God says good enough. 00:20:39.12\00:20:42.75 He didn't come to abolish, and He came to fulfill it. 00:20:45.73\00:20:49.01 Verse 18, "I tell you the truth, 00:20:49.04\00:20:50.88 until heaven and earth disappear, 00:20:50.91\00:20:52.36 not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, 00:20:52.39\00:20:54.91 will by any means disappear from the Law 00:20:54.94\00:20:57.16 until everything is accomplished." 00:20:57.19\00:21:01.70 The heavens is still here, the earth is still here, 00:21:01.73\00:21:06.12 not one dot of an eye, not one of cross of the T 00:21:06.15\00:21:09.68 is gonna change the law of God 00:21:09.71\00:21:12.85 until everything is accomplished. 00:21:12.88\00:21:16.01 "And anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments 00:21:16.04\00:21:18.24 and teaches others to do the same will be called 00:21:18.27\00:21:20.11 least in the kingdom of heaven." 00:21:20.14\00:21:23.08 I was having a discussion with one of my friends 00:21:23.11\00:21:26.37 and he said you're wrong, Jac, 00:21:26.40\00:21:30.31 God doesn't expect us to keep the Sabbath anymore. 00:21:30.34\00:21:33.89 And I said, oh, why not? 00:21:33.92\00:21:37.27 He says because we're under grace, 00:21:37.30\00:21:39.42 we're not under the law. 00:21:39.45\00:21:42.09 I said, oh, okay, well, if I'm under grace 00:21:42.12\00:21:47.02 and that lets me break the fourth commandment 00:21:47.05\00:21:48.88 which is the Sabbath, 00:21:48.91\00:21:50.19 then I should also be able to come steal your car tonight 00:21:50.22\00:21:52.70 while you're sleeping. 00:21:52.73\00:21:53.89 He says no, you can't do that. 00:21:56.57\00:21:58.36 Said why not? 00:21:58.39\00:21:59.42 You said the Ten Commandments are done away with, 00:21:59.45\00:22:02.43 and we're under grace now, so why can't I steal your car? 00:22:02.46\00:22:05.16 Well, in the New Testament, 00:22:05.19\00:22:07.00 He did away with the Ten Commandments on the cross 00:22:07.03\00:22:09.41 but He brought back nine. 00:22:09.44\00:22:10.83 Did Jesus do away with ten and bring back nine 00:22:14.61\00:22:18.97 in order to get rid of one? 00:22:19.00\00:22:22.05 Something doesn't square up here. 00:22:22.08\00:22:25.62 Don't think I've come to abolish the law, 00:22:25.65\00:22:28.36 not one dot of an eye, not one cross of the T 00:22:28.39\00:22:31.51 not one holy day that I blessed is gonna change 00:22:31.54\00:22:36.45 as long as the heavens and the earth are still here. 00:22:36.48\00:22:38.66 Verse 21, he explains it, 00:22:42.15\00:22:43.76 he says, "You've heard that it was said to the people long ago, 00:22:43.79\00:22:46.73 'Do not murder, and anyone who murders 00:22:46.76\00:22:49.70 will be subject to judgment. 00:22:49.73\00:22:51.61 But I tell you anyone angry with his brother 00:22:51.64\00:22:54.97 will be subject to judgment." 00:22:55.00\00:22:57.90 Was Jesus doing away with the commandment? 00:22:57.93\00:23:01.80 Thou shalt not murder? 00:23:01.83\00:23:03.15 Was He saying in the Old Testament 00:23:08.45\00:23:11.39 it was the sin to murder but now in the New Testament, 00:23:11.42\00:23:16.56 those laws have been done away with, 00:23:16.59\00:23:18.30 it's okay to murder, just don't angry at him first. 00:23:18.33\00:23:22.82 Is that what He was saying? 00:23:22.85\00:23:26.29 What was He saying? 00:23:26.32\00:23:28.21 He was saying you think that you've obeyed the law 00:23:28.24\00:23:31.94 because you've never murdered anybody. 00:23:31.97\00:23:34.78 But I'm telling you, 00:23:34.81\00:23:36.55 have you ever got angry at your brother? 00:23:39.23\00:23:43.06 Then you're guilty of murder. 00:23:43.09\00:23:45.69 Was He doing away with the law? 00:23:45.72\00:23:47.21 No, He was lifting up the law, wasn't He? 00:23:47.24\00:23:51.09 He was showing that the spirit of the law is much higher 00:23:51.12\00:23:56.06 even than the letter of the law. 00:23:56.09\00:23:59.79 Keeping the letter of the law isn't enough, 00:23:59.82\00:24:01.72 God wants the spirit of the law in us. 00:24:01.75\00:24:04.15 It's not enough not to murder, 00:24:04.18\00:24:05.49 don't get angry, wow, 00:24:05.52\00:24:07.48 that's a whole different ball game. 00:24:07.51\00:24:11.21 And He makes it even clearer, verse 27, 00:24:11.24\00:24:13.67 "You have heard that it was said, 00:24:13.70\00:24:14.77 'Do not commit adultery.' 00:24:14.80\00:24:16.51 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully 00:24:16.54\00:24:19.65 has already committed adultery with her in his heart." 00:24:19.68\00:24:21.84 Is that what Jesus saying. 00:24:24.17\00:24:26.56 In the Old Testament it was a sin to commit adultery, 00:24:26.59\00:24:32.35 but I'm telling you now in the New Testament, 00:24:32.38\00:24:34.13 since we're not under the law anymore, 00:24:34.16\00:24:35.35 we're under grace, you can go ahead 00:24:35.38\00:24:37.97 and sleep with another man's wife 00:24:38.00\00:24:39.49 or another woman outside of marriage, 00:24:39.52\00:24:41.21 just don't look lustfully at her. 00:24:41.24\00:24:45.07 Is that what He was saying. 00:24:45.10\00:24:47.47 No, He was taking that same law from the Old Testament, 00:24:47.50\00:24:52.58 Ten Commandments and saying, 00:24:52.61\00:24:53.96 you think, you have obeyed the law of God 00:24:53.99\00:24:58.14 because you've never slept with your neighbor's wife, 00:24:58.17\00:25:01.03 I'm telling you. 00:25:01.06\00:25:02.38 Have you ever looked at a Playboy magazine? 00:25:02.41\00:25:03.95 Then you're guilty of committing adultery. 00:25:06.79\00:25:10.59 He wasn't doing away with the law. 00:25:10.62\00:25:12.56 He was lifting it up. 00:25:12.59\00:25:14.88 He was making it so high that no one could ever say, 00:25:14.91\00:25:18.03 "God you've to save me now because I kept the law." 00:25:18.06\00:25:21.59 The spirit of the law is so much higher 00:25:21.62\00:25:23.51 than the letter of the law. 00:25:23.54\00:25:25.09 Jesus was doing away with the letter of the law 00:25:25.12\00:25:27.05 and amplifying it making it bigger and bigger, 00:25:27.08\00:25:30.41 and higher and higher. 00:25:30.44\00:25:31.59 So that the only way you and I can ever be saved 00:25:31.62\00:25:33.87 is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. 00:25:33.90\00:25:38.50 He wasn't doing away with the law. 00:25:38.53\00:25:41.16 Don't let anyone tell you, "Oh, the law has been done away 00:25:41.19\00:25:44.60 with nailed to the cross." 00:25:44.63\00:25:45.83 "Don't even think that" Jesus said. 00:25:45.86\00:25:48.82 But didn't Paul say, didn't Paul say, 00:25:48.85\00:25:51.35 "There were not under the law, we're under grace." 00:25:51.38\00:25:54.05 Didn't Paul say that the law has been nailed to the cross, 00:25:54.08\00:25:57.02 done away with? 00:25:57.05\00:25:58.22 Didn't he say all these things? 00:25:58.25\00:26:00.78 Paul did write some difficult texts. 00:26:00.81\00:26:05.99 Hard to understand. 00:26:06.02\00:26:08.74 And even Peter, said that. 00:26:08.77\00:26:11.28 Did you know that, Peter said, 00:26:11.31\00:26:13.46 "Our brother Paul has written to you 00:26:13.49\00:26:16.72 about salvation in letters that are hard to understand?" 00:26:16.75\00:26:22.53 Now if Peter had a hard time understanding 00:26:24.33\00:26:26.44 and that we shouldn't be surprised 00:26:26.47\00:26:28.16 if we have a difficult time, 00:26:28.19\00:26:29.85 with some of the things Paul wrote. 00:26:29.88\00:26:31.69 And furthermore Peter said, 00:26:33.63\00:26:35.73 "That these men twist and distort the writings of Paul 00:26:35.76\00:26:41.22 to their own destruction." 00:26:41.25\00:26:43.39 And he called them 'lawless men.' 00:26:43.42\00:26:46.76 Interesting, lawless men that means, 00:26:46.79\00:26:48.87 they try to teach the law has been done away with 00:26:48.90\00:26:51.97 by twisting Paul's writings to their own destruction, 00:26:52.00\00:26:57.48 even if that has nothing to do with them. 00:26:57.51\00:27:00.65 And I think we should follow that. 00:27:00.68\00:27:02.37 If anybody tries to tell you the law has been done away with. 00:27:02.40\00:27:05.45 You can know that's a false prophet 00:27:05.48\00:27:08.97 because Jesus said otherwise. 00:27:09.00\00:27:10.84 Now how do we understand some of those things 00:27:10.87\00:27:12.85 that Paul wrote? 00:27:12.88\00:27:13.91 I'm going to show you three texts 00:27:13.94\00:27:15.82 that I call difficult texts. 00:27:15.85\00:27:18.31 And those three texts will give us a key to unlocking 00:27:18.34\00:27:24.09 all of the other difficult writings that Paul wrote. 00:27:24.12\00:27:27.95 Now I'm going to start with the easiest one. 00:27:27.98\00:27:30.46 Romans 3:28, "We maintain that a man is justified by faith 00:27:30.49\00:27:37.49 apart from observing the law." 00:27:37.52\00:27:41.59 So how are we saved? 00:27:41.62\00:27:43.13 We're saved by faith. 00:27:43.16\00:27:45.47 Not by observing the law 00:27:45.50\00:27:47.93 but by faith apart from observing the law. 00:27:47.96\00:27:52.36 Now if that was the end of the letter, 00:27:52.39\00:27:54.13 we could say, well, you see, 00:27:54.16\00:27:55.65 Paul is saying that since we're saved by faith, 00:27:55.68\00:27:58.44 we don't have to observe the law, 00:27:58.47\00:27:59.62 may be we could make a case for that. 00:27:59.65\00:28:02.06 But it isn't the end of the letter. 00:28:02.09\00:28:04.85 Because just in two more verses down in verse 31, 00:28:04.88\00:28:07.69 "Do we then nullify the law by this faith." Not at all. 00:28:07.72\00:28:11.17 Rather, we uphold the law. 00:28:11.20\00:28:14.00 So look at what Paul is saying. 00:28:14.03\00:28:15.36 We're saved by faith apart from observing the law 00:28:15.39\00:28:19.48 but this faith apart from observing the law 00:28:19.51\00:28:22.11 does not nullify the law at all. 00:28:22.14\00:28:23.91 No, it upholds the law. 00:28:23.94\00:28:25.93 So what's the key? 00:28:30.14\00:28:31.99 The key is this. 00:28:32.02\00:28:34.57 You may not understand 00:28:34.60\00:28:35.81 how Paul got from verse 28 to verse 31. 00:28:35.84\00:28:42.83 You may not be able to trace step by step, all of his logic. 00:28:42.86\00:28:48.89 But even if we can't trace step by step, all of his logic, 00:28:51.30\00:28:58.24 we still have to agree with his conclusion. 00:28:58.27\00:29:02.45 Are you with me? 00:29:02.48\00:29:05.57 We're saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, 00:29:05.60\00:29:08.07 apart from works of the law. 00:29:08.10\00:29:09.96 Does that do away with law? 00:29:09.99\00:29:11.02 No, it doesn't do away with the law, 00:29:11.05\00:29:12.23 it upholds the law. 00:29:12.26\00:29:13.34 So we have to accept Paul's conclusion 00:29:13.37\00:29:15.64 that grace does not abolish the law. 00:29:15.67\00:29:18.52 No, it upholds the law. 00:29:18.55\00:29:21.23 That's the key. 00:29:21.26\00:29:24.00 So if anyone says that Paul wrote 00:29:24.03\00:29:30.64 and since we're under grace we don't need to keep the law. 00:29:30.67\00:29:32.69 They're twisting the writings of Paul. 00:29:32.72\00:29:36.33 They're coming out with the different conclusion 00:29:36.36\00:29:38.80 than what Paul came out. 00:29:38.83\00:29:41.09 Because Paul said, "Grace doesn't abolish the law." 00:29:41.12\00:29:45.93 In fact it upholds the law. 00:29:45.96\00:29:48.33 Are you following me? 00:29:48.36\00:29:50.23 I know this is a little heavier, so nod your head, 00:29:50.26\00:29:52.14 raise your hands, say amen or something. 00:29:52.17\00:29:53.46 I need to see you with me now. 00:29:53.49\00:29:54.95 Amen. Okay. 00:29:54.98\00:29:57.71 Let me help you understand this a little bit. 00:29:57.74\00:30:03.21 Oh, years ago, we were in Mobile, Alabama. 00:30:03.24\00:30:10.27 We were doing a Revelation Now meeting. 00:30:10.30\00:30:12.91 And the day came for opening. 00:30:12.94\00:30:16.85 So early in the morning, we loaded everything we could 00:30:16.88\00:30:18.86 in a little red Ford F150 pickup truck. 00:30:18.89\00:30:23.50 Drove down to the auditorium 00:30:23.53\00:30:26.83 where we're going to be having the Revelation Now meetings. 00:30:26.86\00:30:30.22 And God, we did a lot of work, got all set up, you know, 00:30:30.25\00:30:34.56 and around noon we were kind of tired. 00:30:34.59\00:30:37.06 So we drove back home. 00:30:37.09\00:30:38.38 We were staying in a RV Park 00:30:38.41\00:30:39.61 way out on the outskirts of Mobile. 00:30:39.64\00:30:42.41 So my wife and I and our two boys 00:30:42.44\00:30:43.95 got in the pickup drove home. 00:30:43.98\00:30:45.33 And we were kind of anxious to get home 00:30:45.36\00:30:48.59 and get something to eat and get a little rest 00:30:48.62\00:30:50.25 because we needed to have opening night 00:30:50.28\00:30:51.77 at Revelation Now, that night. 00:30:51.80\00:30:56.25 So I'm driving along wide opened highway to that little RV Park. 00:30:56.28\00:31:04.05 Minding my own business when this man 00:31:04.08\00:31:07.00 dressed in a little blue suit, 00:31:07.03\00:31:09.02 white helmet, radar gun in his hand 00:31:09.05\00:31:11.79 steps out from behind a bunch of bushes 00:31:11.82\00:31:14.17 points at me and goes like that. 00:31:14.20\00:31:18.84 That means pullover, down in Alabama. 00:31:18.87\00:31:24.00 So I'm pulled over to side of the road. 00:31:24.03\00:31:29.25 Oh, man, I'm feeling sick. 00:31:29.28\00:31:32.23 You ever had that happened to you? 00:31:32.26\00:31:34.66 Not a good feeling. So he comes walking over there. 00:31:34.69\00:31:38.79 I think they teach him how to walk in police school. 00:31:38.82\00:31:46.79 He is walking over there and he has a radar gun in has hand. 00:31:46.82\00:31:52.74 And I rolled down my window and he said, 00:31:52.77\00:31:56.94 "You were doing 55 miles an hour, see that?" 00:31:56.97\00:32:00.77 "Yes, sir." You got to be polite. 00:32:00.80\00:32:06.03 "Speed limit is 45, did you know that?" 00:32:06.06\00:32:07.87 No, sir. It is. 00:32:07.90\00:32:09.03 "Yes, sir." Oh, man 45-55. 00:32:09.06\00:32:16.14 I means he had me, right? 00:32:16.17\00:32:18.14 The law said 45, I was doing 55, 00:32:18.17\00:32:20.51 I broke the law, I was guilty. 00:32:20.54\00:32:22.97 I'm condemned by the law. 00:32:23.00\00:32:25.23 I'm under the law condemned 00:32:25.26\00:32:28.07 and he whipped out that little ticket book from his pocket. 00:32:28.10\00:32:32.61 I think they teach him how to do that too. 00:32:32.64\00:32:38.68 He asked me for my driver's license stuck it in there. 00:32:38.71\00:32:43.24 And oh, man, I'm under the law. 00:32:43.27\00:32:45.97 I do not feel good. 00:32:46.00\00:32:48.05 It does not feel good to be under the law. 00:32:48.08\00:32:51.72 And he is starting to write on that pad 00:32:51.75\00:32:55.59 and he looked at my license 00:32:55.62\00:32:56.97 and he said, Tennessee. Yes, sir. 00:32:57.00\00:33:03.68 You live there? Yes, sir. 00:33:03.71\00:33:07.60 Well long you're down here for? Four, five weeks. 00:33:07.63\00:33:13.88 Military? No, sir. 00:33:13.91\00:33:17.72 Vacation? No, sir. 00:33:17.75\00:33:22.38 What you're doing here for four, five weeks? 00:33:22.41\00:33:26.69 I'm a preacher. Preacher, ah! 00:33:32.11\00:33:39.37 Oh, he is writing. I'm under the law, oh man. 00:33:39.40\00:33:46.75 And he looked at my license again, 00:33:46.78\00:33:48.69 it had a little picture on it, he looked up at me. 00:33:48.72\00:33:53.54 Looked at the picture and looked at me. 00:33:53.57\00:33:56.91 And he said, "I know who you are." 00:33:56.94\00:33:59.74 Weren't you that guy doing that thing 00:33:59.77\00:34:01.23 about Revelation over there in the auditorium? Yes, sir. 00:34:01.26\00:34:08.90 Boy he had me, I'm under the law. 00:34:08.93\00:34:10.97 It said 45, I did 55. 00:34:11.00\00:34:16.66 He tore up my ticket, gave me my license back and he said, 00:34:16.69\00:34:24.66 "Keep up the good work, preacher, but slowdown." 00:34:24.69\00:34:31.00 And now I'm not under the law anymore, 00:34:31.03\00:34:36.15 I'm under grace because out of the goodness of his heart 00:34:36.18\00:34:40.17 not because of anything I did. 00:34:40.20\00:34:41.89 But out of the goodness of his heart, 00:34:41.92\00:34:43.12 he tore up the ticket and set me free 00:34:43.15\00:34:45.78 and I do not have to pay the fine or the penalty. 00:34:45.81\00:34:48.67 I'm not under the law, I'm under grace 00:34:48.70\00:34:51.40 and it feels good to be under grace. 00:34:51.43\00:34:54.42 Amen. It felt so good. 00:34:54.45\00:34:59.71 Then we went home and rested and ate 00:34:59.74\00:35:02.64 and got dressed, went back down 00:35:02.67\00:35:04.74 for the opening night of Revelation Now. 00:35:04.77\00:35:07.44 And I drove pass that same plump of bushes. 00:35:07.47\00:35:11.45 But I'm not even scared about it 00:35:11.48\00:35:13.05 because I'm not under the law anymore, I'm under grace. 00:35:13.08\00:35:15.76 So I put my foot down 00:35:15.79\00:35:17.31 and I went as fast as I could go, passed those bushes. 00:35:17.34\00:35:21.48 I'm under grace. Do you believe that? 00:35:21.51\00:35:27.65 The law said what? 45, I did 35. 00:35:27.68\00:35:35.15 Why? Because I'm under grace. 00:35:36.25\00:35:41.08 I deserved to pay the fine 00:35:41.11\00:35:43.43 and out of the goodness of his heart he tore up the ticket. 00:35:43.46\00:35:46.49 And I'm not about to let him down. 00:35:46.52\00:35:52.48 You have sinned and come short of the glory of God. 00:35:52.51\00:35:56.69 You deserved to die, you deserved to the pay the fine 00:35:56.72\00:36:00.42 you deserve the penalty. 00:36:00.45\00:36:02.10 But Jesus Christ by His grace tore up the ticket. 00:36:02.13\00:36:08.25 And you're not under the law anymore, you're under grace. 00:36:08.28\00:36:12.38 But does it set you free to break the law. 00:36:12.41\00:36:17.16 Not at chance. It upholds the law. 00:36:17.19\00:36:20.96 I'm not going to go around lying and stealing 00:36:20.99\00:36:23.81 and killing and cheating 00:36:23.84\00:36:25.00 because He out of the goodness of His heart set me free 00:36:25.03\00:36:28.95 and I'm not going to let Him down. 00:36:28.98\00:36:31.72 What a God, amen. Amen. 00:36:31.75\00:36:34.34 Don't let anybody tell you that the law was done away with. 00:36:34.37\00:36:38.42 If the law was done away with when Jesus died on the cross, 00:36:38.45\00:36:41.93 then Jesus would have to die on the cross 00:36:41.96\00:36:44.39 to prove that Satan was right when he said the law is no good. 00:36:44.42\00:36:48.81 Think about that. 00:36:48.84\00:36:50.92 No, the law is so perfect 00:36:50.95\00:36:53.24 because it's a written description 00:36:53.27\00:36:54.91 of what God is like that it can't be broken. 00:36:54.94\00:36:58.05 Only way to save us is the one equal to the law 00:36:58.08\00:37:01.21 to die for us in His place 00:37:01.24\00:37:04.70 and that's the Lamb of Revelation, 00:37:04.73\00:37:08.15 the Lamb of God. Okay, that was an easy one. 00:37:08.18\00:37:11.43 Now, we need to go to the harder one. 00:37:11.46\00:37:14.37 Are you ready? You're awake now. 00:37:14.40\00:37:17.73 Because I know several of you were wondering about this. 00:37:17.76\00:37:20.07 Some even ask in the little book of Colossians 2, 00:37:20.10\00:37:24.41 Colossians 2:13 and in the middle of the verse 00:37:24.44\00:37:29.59 I want to get a little cushioned there, a little context. 00:37:29.62\00:37:33.18 "God made you alive with Christ, He forgave us all of our sins, 00:37:33.21\00:37:41.10 having canceled the written code with its regulations, 00:37:41.13\00:37:44.86 that was against us that stood opposed to us 00:37:44.89\00:37:48.95 he took it away, nailing it to the cross." 00:37:48.98\00:37:55.61 You'd say what you're gonna do with that pastor? 00:37:55.64\00:37:58.99 I'm going to believe it for starters, 00:37:59.02\00:38:02.04 it's in the word of God, it has to be true. 00:38:02.07\00:38:04.72 You say, but that contradicts 00:38:04.75\00:38:05.78 with what we've just been learning. 00:38:05.81\00:38:07.15 No, it doesn't because this letter isn't over yet. 00:38:07.18\00:38:12.45 He has not finished, he has more to say. 00:38:12.48\00:38:16.24 But it sounds like it He canceled that written code 00:38:16.27\00:38:19.02 with His regulations that was against us stood opposed. 00:38:19.05\00:38:21.95 Underline that, "His regulation, this code, 00:38:21.98\00:38:24.59 that was against us and stood opposed to us. 00:38:24.62\00:38:27.72 He took it away nailing it to the cross." 00:38:27.75\00:38:30.15 Verse 16, though he goes on. 00:38:30.18\00:38:32.20 "Therefore do not let anyone judge you 00:38:32.23\00:38:34.21 by what you eat or drink, or religious festival, 00:38:34.24\00:38:37.37 or a New Moon celebration or Sabbath days." 00:38:37.40\00:38:40.12 Oh, wow, it's even worst pastor. 00:38:40.15\00:38:44.51 The law was nailed to the cross. 00:38:44.54\00:38:46.98 So don't let anyone judge you by Sabbath days. 00:38:47.01\00:38:51.67 How are you going to get out of that one? 00:38:51.70\00:38:54.00 Oh, I'm not interested in getting out of anything. 00:38:54.03\00:38:58.14 I'm only interested in knowing what is God saying to me. 00:38:58.17\00:39:04.62 What is He saying? Now this is a difficult one. 00:39:04.65\00:39:09.10 This is one of those verses that Paul wrote, 00:39:09.13\00:39:11.17 I think Peter might have been referring to. 00:39:11.20\00:39:14.32 But if we step back and look at it 00:39:14.35\00:39:16.82 in its big picture, then it becomes crystal clear. 00:39:16.85\00:39:23.35 In fact in 1:15 it says, "He is the image 00:39:23.38\00:39:28.37 of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 00:39:28.40\00:39:32.39 For by him all things were created, 00:39:32.42\00:39:34.61 all things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, 00:39:34.64\00:39:37.45 whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities 00:39:37.48\00:39:39.77 all things were created by him and for him. 00:39:39.80\00:39:43.15 He is before all things, 00:39:43.18\00:39:45.10 and in him all things hold together." 00:39:45.13\00:39:47.27 That reminds me of Genesis, the Creator 00:39:47.30\00:39:50.36 and Exodus 4, remember the Sabbath 00:39:50.39\00:39:53.29 because in six days God created all things. 00:39:53.32\00:39:59.09 So how can He start this letter 00:39:59.12\00:40:01.37 with a huge reminder of the Creator God? 00:40:01.40\00:40:05.92 And then come and nail to the cross 00:40:05.95\00:40:08.45 the one commandment that reminds us that He is Creator. 00:40:08.48\00:40:13.53 That doesn't make sense. So what is he saying here? 00:40:13.56\00:40:19.71 Let's go back, Verse 16, 00:40:19.74\00:40:22.27 "Therefore, let no one judge you by Sabbath days." 00:40:22.30\00:40:28.89 And if you're reading in the King James, 00:40:28.92\00:40:30.38 you'll notice that was even in the middle of a sentence. 00:40:30.41\00:40:33.47 That's where people usually stop but there is more. 00:40:33.50\00:40:37.96 He goes on to say, "Sabbath days 00:40:37.99\00:40:40.51 which are a shadow of things to come the reality being Christ." 00:40:40.54\00:40:46.94 So let no one judge you by Sabbath days 00:40:46.97\00:40:49.35 which are a shadow of things to come. 00:40:49.38\00:40:53.15 What does that mean? 00:40:53.18\00:40:55.33 For a moment, I want you to just forget about shadows. 00:40:55.36\00:40:59.50 We'll describe and we'll understand 00:40:59.53\00:41:01.31 what the shadow mean. 00:41:01.34\00:41:02.62 So don't worry about what it means, it's just there. 00:41:02.65\00:41:06.97 And let me illustrate it this way. 00:41:07.00\00:41:09.46 Let no one judge you by Sabbath days, which ones? 00:41:09.49\00:41:13.91 The ones which are shadows. 00:41:13.94\00:41:18.26 What's a shadow? Doesn't matter for now. 00:41:18.29\00:41:20.07 Don't worry about that. 00:41:20.10\00:41:23.12 Let no one judge you by Sabbath days which are shadows. 00:41:23.15\00:41:28.24 Now follow me. Let see. 00:41:28.27\00:41:31.70 Imagine that this plant. 00:41:31.73\00:41:33.83 Oh, yeah, here look, here are some grapes. 00:41:33.86\00:41:35.66 Can you see the grapes? 00:41:35.69\00:41:38.67 There are some purple ones, 00:41:38.70\00:41:40.65 some red ones and some green ones. 00:41:40.68\00:41:43.96 Now these aren't mine so I can't do this 00:41:43.99\00:41:46.04 but let just pretend that I could say. 00:41:46.07\00:41:49.47 Is anybody here hungry tonight. 00:41:49.50\00:41:52.91 I'm going to let you have all the grapes which are green. 00:41:52.94\00:41:59.28 Now am I talking about the purple ones? No. 00:41:59.31\00:42:03.03 Am I talking about the red ones? 00:42:03.06\00:42:05.59 Which one I'm talking about. The green ones. 00:42:05.62\00:42:10.12 So when Paul says, "Let no man judge you 00:42:10.15\00:42:12.88 by Sabbath days which are shadows." 00:42:12.91\00:42:17.14 Is he talking about Sabbath days which are not shadows? 00:42:17.17\00:42:23.38 See, now what is shadow? 00:42:23.41\00:42:27.82 In order to answer that we're going to 00:42:27.85\00:42:29.38 have to go down to the Old Testament. 00:42:29.41\00:42:31.67 Leviticus 23 and here is where it really gets deep. 00:42:31.70\00:42:36.43 So shake the cobwebs out, 00:42:36.46\00:42:38.14 you can get this, It is exciting. 00:42:38.17\00:42:41.02 And you're going to understand things about the Bible now 00:42:41.05\00:42:43.86 that a lot of people never get. 00:42:43.89\00:42:46.30 Look 23:3. "There are six days when you may work, 00:42:46.33\00:42:52.52 but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, 00:42:52.55\00:42:56.72 a day of sacred assembly. 00:42:56.75\00:42:59.26 You are not to do any work wherever you live, 00:42:59.29\00:43:01.07 it is a Sabbath to the Lord." 00:43:01.10\00:43:03.54 So you can work for six days, rest-- 00:43:03.57\00:43:05.80 That's the Fourth Commandment, isn't it. 00:43:05.83\00:43:07.94 We've already learned about that. 00:43:07.97\00:43:09.62 That Sabbath day is a reminder, 00:43:09.65\00:43:14.08 it's a monument we learned pointing us back to creation. 00:43:14.11\00:43:21.57 It points us back to that great creative act of God. 00:43:21.60\00:43:26.62 And it reminds us of His authority 00:43:26.65\00:43:29.28 as the Creator of the heavens and the earth. 00:43:29.31\00:43:31.63 That's the seventh day Sabbath. 00:43:31.66\00:43:35.35 Now, just to condense things a little bit, 00:43:35.38\00:43:38.26 to make it a little easier for us. 00:43:38.29\00:43:39.87 Is it okay if I call that one weekly Sabbath? 00:43:39.90\00:43:44.14 Okay, because it comes how often, 00:43:44.17\00:43:47.20 once a week, very good. 00:43:47.23\00:43:49.72 Now, you knew that already. But look at 23:26. 00:43:49.75\00:43:57.64 The Lord said to Moses, 00:43:57.67\00:43:59.78 "The tenth day of the seventh month 00:43:59.81\00:44:03.28 is the Day of Atonement." 00:44:03.31\00:44:06.67 When is the Day of Atonement? 00:44:06.70\00:44:08.81 The tenth day of the seventh month. 00:44:08.84\00:44:14.07 What is the Day of Atonement? 00:44:14.10\00:44:15.67 verse 32, It is a Sabbath of rest for you. 00:44:15.70\00:44:21.27 So here is a Sabbath day that comes on the Bible tells us 00:44:21.30\00:44:26.13 the tenth day of the seventh month. 00:44:26.16\00:44:30.75 How often is that? Once a year. 00:44:30.78\00:44:35.29 So can I call that one a yearly Sabbath? 00:44:35.32\00:44:39.02 It's not the same as the weekly Sabbath. 00:44:39.05\00:44:41.98 So let's distinguish. 00:44:42.01\00:44:43.43 We have a weekly Sabbath and we have the yearly Sabbath. 00:44:43.46\00:44:46.75 How often is the yearly Sabbath? 00:44:46.78\00:44:50.40 Very good. Once a year. 00:44:50.43\00:44:53.66 There are lot of yearly Sabbaths in the Old Testament, 00:44:53.69\00:44:56.57 the Passover, Feast of Unleavened Bread 00:44:56.60\00:45:00.12 with the Passover, that was the Sabbath day. 00:45:00.15\00:45:03.10 Lot of-- yearly Sabbaths. 00:45:03.13\00:45:05.80 And it came once a year and look at the end of verse 27. 00:45:05.83\00:45:10.78 "An Offering is to be made to the Lord on that day." 00:45:10.81\00:45:15.37 Every one of those yearly Sabbaths 00:45:15.40\00:45:18.50 involved a sacrifice or an offering to the Lord. 00:45:18.53\00:45:25.77 Passover they offered a lamb as the sacrifice 00:45:25.80\00:45:29.62 and put his blood on the doorpost. 00:45:29.65\00:45:33.11 Now, follow me. 00:45:33.14\00:45:34.82 When they offered a lamb as the sacrifice, 00:45:34.85\00:45:38.88 did that lamb save anybody? 00:45:38.91\00:45:42.24 No, the lamb didn't save anybody. 00:45:42.27\00:45:47.11 The lamb pointed forward to the Lamb of God 00:45:47.14\00:45:53.00 who would die on the cross and save us. 00:45:53.03\00:45:57.98 So follow me, the lamb 00:45:58.01\00:46:00.08 that was offered as a sacrifice in the Old Testament 00:46:00.11\00:46:03.74 was a shadow of the Lamb of God Jesus Christ. 00:46:03.77\00:46:09.45 He was the reality to come. 00:46:09.48\00:46:12.84 So the lamb, the offering, the sacrifice 00:46:12.87\00:46:16.35 was a shadow pointing forward to Christ. 00:46:16.38\00:46:21.24 Therefore, the Day of Atonement, 00:46:21.27\00:46:23.46 the Passover, they were all shadows 00:46:23.49\00:46:27.89 pointing forward to the reality who is Christ. 00:46:27.92\00:46:32.27 Every one of those yearly Sabbath days involved sacrifice. 00:46:32.30\00:46:38.01 And every one of them was a shadow. 00:46:38.04\00:46:42.49 The weekly Sabbath pointed backward to creation. 00:46:42.52\00:46:48.11 It wasn't a shadow, it was a reminder 00:46:48.14\00:46:53.81 written in God's Ten Commandment, 00:46:53.84\00:46:56.17 Moral Law describing what love is. 00:46:56.20\00:46:59.15 Love to God and love to fellowmen. 00:46:59.18\00:47:03.50 And it stands forever. 00:47:03.53\00:47:05.21 So you see we have two kinds of Sabbaths. 00:47:07.78\00:47:10.00 Weekly Sabbath which is not a shadow, 00:47:10.03\00:47:13.89 the yearly Sabbath which is a shadow. 00:47:13.92\00:47:18.30 So when Paul says, "Let no man judge you 00:47:18.33\00:47:21.33 by Sabbath days which are shadows," 00:47:21.36\00:47:24.60 he is looking at the yearly Sabbaths 00:47:24.63\00:47:27.10 and they've been done away with. 00:47:27.13\00:47:29.63 He is not talking about the weekly Sabbath. 00:47:29.66\00:47:32.17 No more than I say when I said I'm going to give you 00:47:32.20\00:47:34.70 all of the grapes which are green, 00:47:34.73\00:47:36.50 I'm not talking about the red ones. 00:47:36.53\00:47:38.24 So when Paul said, "Let no one judge you 00:47:38.27\00:47:40.18 by Sabbath days which are shadows." 00:47:40.21\00:47:41.74 He is not talking about the weekly Sabbath 00:47:41.77\00:47:43.74 which is not a shadow 00:47:43.77\00:47:45.21 because it is the eternal reminder 00:47:45.24\00:47:46.90 that the God is the Creator and we'll be celebrating 00:47:46.93\00:47:49.18 and rejoicing over that even in heaven. 00:47:49.21\00:47:53.00 So you see when you understand there are two kinds of laws 00:47:53.03\00:47:57.19 then there's no contradiction when he says, 00:47:57.22\00:47:59.65 "The law has been nailed to the cross." 00:47:59.68\00:48:02.61 It stood against us. 00:48:02.64\00:48:05.37 Those sacrificial laws where nailed to the cross. 00:48:05.40\00:48:08.94 We don't have to offer sacrifices anymore. Why? 00:48:08.97\00:48:12.55 Because, the Lamb of God Christ, our Passover has died. 00:48:12.58\00:48:20.55 You see it all fits together. 00:48:20.58\00:48:23.15 And I'll show you something else 00:48:23.18\00:48:24.22 kind of interesting if I can do it quickly here. 00:48:24.25\00:48:26.88 In Deuteronomy and it illustrates 00:48:26.91\00:48:28.55 the point in Deuteronomy 10:1. 00:48:28.58\00:48:31.45 "The Lord said to Moses." 00:48:31.48\00:48:32.70 Remember he was getting ready 00:48:32.73\00:48:33.79 to go up on the mountain top to meet God in the cloud. 00:48:33.82\00:48:37.71 He said, "Chisel out two stone tablets 00:48:37.74\00:48:39.74 and then come up with me up on the mountain 00:48:39.77\00:48:42.97 and make a wooden chest. 00:48:43.00\00:48:45.66 And I'm going to write on those tablets the Ten Commandments." 00:48:45.69\00:48:49.94 So Moses cutout the two tablets out of the stone 00:48:49.97\00:48:53.19 and he went up on top of the mountain 00:48:53.22\00:48:55.11 and he handed those tablets up to God. 00:48:55.14\00:48:57.74 And the Bible says God Himself wrote with His own finger 00:48:57.77\00:49:00.92 on those tablets of stone the Ten Commandments. 00:49:00.95\00:49:05.88 And then he said, Moses verse 3, 00:49:05.91\00:49:09.54 "So I made a ark, a wooden chest." 00:49:09.57\00:49:13.49 And in verse 4, "The Lord wrote on those tablets 00:49:13.52\00:49:16.34 the Ten Commandments and he did what God said. 00:49:16.37\00:49:19.70 He put them inside the chest." The end of verse 2. 00:49:19.73\00:49:25.53 So God wrote and let me say it a little differently. 00:49:25.56\00:49:28.80 God wrote with His own finger 00:49:28.83\00:49:33.25 on stone the Ten Commandments. 00:49:33.28\00:49:36.88 And Moses put them inside the Ark of the Covenant. 00:49:36.91\00:49:42.25 You got the picture. Now watch this. 00:49:42.28\00:49:46.37 In Deuteronomy 31:24, "After Moses finished 00:49:46.40\00:49:51.96 writing in the book the words of the law. 00:49:51.99\00:49:55.46 So after Moses finished writing 00:49:55.49\00:49:58.46 his book on the words of the law. 00:49:58.49\00:50:01.36 Verse 25, "He gave this command 00:50:01.39\00:50:03.52 to the Levites." That's the priest. 00:50:03.55\00:50:05.39 "That was carrying the Ark of Covenant." 00:50:05.42\00:50:07.49 What's the inside the Ark? The tablets of stone. 00:50:07.52\00:50:11.82 "So Moses wrote his book and he gave them this command." 00:50:11.85\00:50:15.91 He said, verse 26, "Take this Book of the Law." 00:50:15.94\00:50:19.05 The one that Moses wrote. 00:50:19.08\00:50:21.32 "And place it beside the Ark of the Covenant 00:50:21.35\00:50:26.34 of the Lord your God. 00:50:26.37\00:50:27.69 And there it will remain as a witness against you." 00:50:27.72\00:50:32.14 So the Ten Commandments God wrote on stone 00:50:32.17\00:50:35.40 with His own finger and put inside the ark 00:50:35.43\00:50:38.40 but Moses wrote the law on paper or papyrus 00:50:38.43\00:50:43.07 or whatever they wrote on back then. 00:50:43.10\00:50:47.16 Moses wrote it on paper 00:50:47.19\00:50:49.66 and put it beside the Ark of the Covenant. 00:50:49.69\00:50:53.50 One on stone inside, one on paper outside. 00:50:53.53\00:50:58.35 One written by God, one by Moses one stood against us. 00:50:58.38\00:51:04.89 That's exactly what Paul said in Colossians. 00:51:04.92\00:51:08.55 The law with its ordnances that stood against us 00:51:08.58\00:51:11.58 was abolished taken her away nailed to the cross. 00:51:11.61\00:51:16.46 But the one inside the Ark, he says in Hebrews 8. 00:51:16.49\00:51:23.21 It's written inside our hearts. 00:51:23.24\00:51:27.39 Same law that God wrote on stone. 00:51:27.42\00:51:32.45 It doesn't go away, paper goes away, not stone. 00:51:32.48\00:51:36.38 Now he writes on our hearts. See it all fits together. 00:51:36.41\00:51:42.94 When you recognize there are two different kinds of laws. 00:51:42.97\00:51:47.00 So if anytime you see writing about Paul 00:51:47.03\00:51:49.47 doing away with the law, you gonna say which law? 00:51:49.50\00:51:52.13 Sacrifices or the moral law, the Ten Commandments. 00:51:52.16\00:51:54.82 No, not the moral law, never 00:51:54.85\00:51:57.26 because it describes the character of God. 00:51:57.29\00:52:00.23 It describes love. God can't change. 00:52:00.26\00:52:05.18 But those sacrificial laws abolished, torn up, 00:52:05.21\00:52:08.41 nailed to the cross and everything fits. 00:52:08.44\00:52:14.53 One more, difficult text 00:52:14.56\00:52:17.40 and this is the little easier again. 00:52:17.43\00:52:19.68 Let's go back to Romans, 00:52:19.71\00:52:21.03 this time the seventh chapter, in Romans 7. 00:52:21.06\00:52:26.60 This one is the function of the law. 00:52:26.63\00:52:30.92 The function of the purpose of the law. 00:52:30.95\00:52:32.76 In verse 7, "What shall we say then?" 00:52:32.79\00:52:35.79 I'm in Romans 7:7 "What shall we say then? 00:52:35.82\00:52:38.76 Is the law sin?" Certainly not. 00:52:38.79\00:52:43.44 "Indeed, I would not have known 00:52:43.47\00:52:44.76 what sin was except through the law. 00:52:44.79\00:52:48.23 For I not have known what coveting really was 00:52:48.26\00:52:50.51 if law had not said do not covet." 00:52:50.54\00:52:53.29 So which law is Paul writing about now? 00:52:53.32\00:52:57.56 The one that says do not covet. 00:52:57.59\00:52:59.96 And which law says do not covet? 00:52:59.99\00:53:03.72 The Ten Commandments. All right so. 00:53:03.75\00:53:05.87 Is the law sin? No. 00:53:05.90\00:53:08.26 I wouldn't have known what sin was, 00:53:08.29\00:53:09.84 what coveting was except for the law that said do not covet. 00:53:09.87\00:53:12.97 So Paul the great preacher of righteousness, 00:53:13.00\00:53:17.07 the most spiritual writer in the New Testament I believe, 00:53:17.10\00:53:20.95 still needed the law to tell him what sin was. 00:53:20.98\00:53:26.07 That's the purpose of the law 00:53:26.10\00:53:28.17 is to reveal sin, its like God's mirror. 00:53:28.20\00:53:32.06 Now some of you may have noticed 00:53:32.09\00:53:34.14 when you drove into the parking lot 00:53:34.17\00:53:36.39 that we have in RV Parked at the end of the parking lot. 00:53:36.42\00:53:41.83 What you probably didn't know is that, 00:53:41.86\00:53:44.86 it used to be a greyhound bus. 00:53:44.89\00:53:49.30 It was a 1975 greyhound bus, 35 years old. 00:53:49.33\00:53:55.52 And we had it rebuilt into an RV that we could live in. 00:53:55.55\00:54:01.02 And I've had it like ten years now. 00:54:01.05\00:54:04.02 I love that old bus. 00:54:04.05\00:54:06.56 But I don't know, man, 00:54:06.59\00:54:07.63 it's just something about it, I love my bus. 00:54:07.66\00:54:11.44 And I'm not a mechanic or anything, 00:54:11.47\00:54:13.14 don't misunderstand me. 00:54:13.17\00:54:15.43 But when I goto that back 00:54:15.46\00:54:16.73 and I open those two big doors back there. 00:54:16.76\00:54:19.49 See that big engine. 00:54:19.52\00:54:21.23 Oh, man, it just does something to me. 00:54:21.26\00:54:24.59 Love that big engine. 00:54:24.62\00:54:27.07 And I don't know how to fix stuff 00:54:27.10\00:54:28.56 but I know how to check the oil 00:54:28.59\00:54:30.24 and tinker a little bit back there. 00:54:30.27\00:54:32.36 And every time I go back there and fool around. 00:54:32.39\00:54:34.94 And I go back inside the house. Dina goes, wow. 00:54:34.97\00:54:39.27 You can't come in here like that. Why not? 00:54:39.30\00:54:42.37 You've got grease all over you. 00:54:42.40\00:54:44.81 And sure enough, man, I got it on my hands. 00:54:44.84\00:54:49.99 All over my face, my arms, I'm a preacher. 00:54:50.02\00:54:54.26 I don't like grease on my hands. 00:54:54.29\00:54:57.34 So I get angry. Oh, I'm angry. 00:54:57.37\00:55:00.51 So I go back into the bathroom 00:55:00.54\00:55:02.92 and I look, oh, it's all over my face too. 00:55:02.95\00:55:05.13 Now I'm really angry what I'm going to do? 00:55:05.16\00:55:08.61 So I walkover to the wall and I yank at mirror of the wall 00:55:08.64\00:55:12.63 and take it outside and smash it on the sidewalk. 00:55:12.66\00:55:16.23 That will fix all that grease, ah. 00:55:16.26\00:55:21.10 No, the grease is still there. 00:55:21.13\00:55:23.86 I just can't see it anymore but it's still there. 00:55:23.89\00:55:28.19 Sometimes people go to God's law 00:55:28.22\00:55:30.44 and then says, "Thou shall not covet. 00:55:30.47\00:55:33.27 Thou shall not commit adultery." 00:55:33.30\00:55:36.11 Oh, wow, I don't like that. I know what I'll do. 00:55:36.14\00:55:40.31 I'll take that law and I'll nail it to the cross 00:55:40.34\00:55:44.38 and do away with it. 00:55:44.41\00:55:45.44 Now I'm under grace now. The sin is still there. 00:55:45.47\00:55:49.21 I just can't see them anymore. 00:55:49.24\00:55:50.74 Or I could do something else. 00:55:54.71\00:55:57.05 I'll look in the mirror and say, grease. 00:55:57.08\00:56:01.43 So I know what I'll do, I'll take that mirror 00:56:01.46\00:56:03.76 so I go take the mirror down off the wall. 00:56:03.79\00:56:07.36 Start washing my face off with the mirror. 00:56:07.39\00:56:11.29 Then I'll get rid of the grease. 00:56:11.32\00:56:15.13 Well, it doesn't, it makes that worse 00:56:15.16\00:56:20.34 and it ruins the mirror. 00:56:20.37\00:56:22.59 Can't see anything very good in there anymore. 00:56:22.62\00:56:26.32 You know some people do that with God's mirror. 00:56:26.35\00:56:28.75 You see the commandments and it points out their sins. 00:56:31.67\00:56:34.75 Thou shalt not lie. Oh, I have never done that. 00:56:34.78\00:56:38.76 Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. 00:56:38.79\00:56:44.02 I know what I will do. I'll obey the law. 00:56:44.05\00:56:49.78 You may try to obey the law so that God can save them. 00:56:49.81\00:56:55.90 But you see when you do that, the sin is still there. 00:56:55.93\00:57:01.96 You just bring the law down to something you can do 00:57:01.99\00:57:06.64 instead of lifting it up 00:57:06.67\00:57:07.94 to what only He could do and it ruins the law. 00:57:07.97\00:57:14.38 You can't be saved by keeping the law. 00:57:14.41\00:57:16.72 You see, it's the law of God 00:57:22.07\00:57:27.29 that keeps me on my knees at the foot of the cross. 00:57:27.32\00:57:35.29 The object of the antichrist attack, 00:57:36.97\00:57:40.49 the law of God and the cross of Christ. 00:57:40.52\00:57:45.40 And if you could just do away with one, 00:57:45.43\00:57:51.98 we become lawbreakers. 00:57:52.01\00:57:56.10 Thank God for the grace of Jesus Christ. 00:57:56.13\00:58:01.62
