We were there in meeting in Washington DC 00:00:19.40\00:00:21.28 and on a day off, I just had to go down 00:00:21.31\00:00:24.62 to see the wall. 00:00:24.65\00:00:29.18 Big stark stone wall 00:00:29.21\00:00:36.11 with thousands and thousands of names 00:00:36.14\00:00:38.69 of men and women who lost their lives 00:00:38.72\00:00:42.06 fighting for freedom, 00:00:42.09\00:00:45.36 things that we hold so dear. 00:00:45.39\00:00:49.43 And I walked down that wall looking at those names 00:00:49.46\00:00:52.43 until finally I saw it. 00:00:52.46\00:00:55.30 Thomas T. Norman, 00:00:59.40\00:01:02.86 my best friend 00:01:05.91\00:01:09.77 and I reached out and just touched the letters 00:01:09.80\00:01:15.81 and instantly I was flooded 00:01:15.84\00:01:18.86 with memories of the time that we spent together. 00:01:18.89\00:01:25.40 Hours of target study, simulator practice 00:01:25.43\00:01:28.99 and then out on the football field, 00:01:29.02\00:01:31.83 Tommy was the quarterback 00:01:31.86\00:01:33.27 and he could throw the tightest spiral 00:01:33.30\00:01:35.60 that just settled into your hands 00:01:35.63\00:01:37.70 like catching an eggshell. 00:01:37.73\00:01:41.18 And then when he met Jeanette 00:01:41.21\00:01:44.08 and they were married and little Tarah came along. 00:01:44.11\00:01:47.94 All of these good memories just rushed over me. 00:01:47.97\00:01:54.48 You see that's what a monument is supposed to do. 00:01:54.51\00:01:59.84 It's supposed to take us back in to the experience 00:01:59.87\00:02:03.90 that it commemorates. 00:02:03.93\00:02:07.53 That's what a monument is for. 00:02:07.56\00:02:12.12 Now God knew from the very beginning 00:02:12.15\00:02:16.05 that Satan would attack His authority 00:02:16.08\00:02:19.19 as the Creator of the heavens and the earth. 00:02:19.22\00:02:23.15 God knew that this would be the platform, 00:02:23.18\00:02:26.19 the stage for his final warfare against God's people. 00:02:26.22\00:02:33.71 And as we learned in the mid 1800s, 00:02:33.74\00:02:35.94 Charles Darwin published his book 00:02:35.97\00:02:38.28 "The Origin of Species" 00:02:38.31\00:02:41.76 popularizing the theory of evolution 00:02:41.79\00:02:44.25 and the church joined hands with modern science 00:02:44.28\00:02:47.84 infiltrating the ranks of God's people 00:02:47.87\00:02:50.50 with a new philosophy that would in fact undermined 00:02:50.53\00:02:53.92 God's authority as the Creator. 00:02:53.95\00:02:56.11 God knew that this would happen. 00:02:56.14\00:02:59.58 And that's why at the very beginning, 00:02:59.61\00:03:02.01 He created a monument, 00:03:02.04\00:03:04.83 a memorial to remind man for ever that He is the Creator. 00:03:04.86\00:03:11.40 Now God knew that if He made His monument 00:03:11.43\00:03:14.35 and carved it out of stone or wood, 00:03:14.38\00:03:17.54 that man would either destroy it 00:03:17.57\00:03:19.92 or decorate it with gold and silver 00:03:19.95\00:03:22.94 and worship the monument 00:03:22.97\00:03:24.40 instead of the God of the monument. 00:03:24.43\00:03:27.92 And so He didn't do that. God did something else. 00:03:27.95\00:03:33.56 He made His monument out of something 00:03:33.59\00:03:36.57 that would forever be out of the reach 00:03:36.60\00:03:39.39 of mankind and the devil. 00:03:39.42\00:03:42.54 Instead of carving it out of stone, 00:03:42.57\00:03:45.05 He carved His monument out of time. 00:03:45.08\00:03:50.04 That's why the Bible tells us in Genesis 2:2. 00:03:50.07\00:03:54.54 "By the seventh day God had finished the work 00:03:54.57\00:03:59.09 He had been doing, 00:03:59.12\00:04:00.50 so on the seventh day He rested from His work. 00:04:00.53\00:04:06.50 And God blessed the seventh day 00:04:06.53\00:04:09.59 and He made it holy because on it He rested 00:04:09.62\00:04:15.08 from all the work of creating that He had done." 00:04:15.11\00:04:18.71 So God intentionally worked six days 00:04:18.74\00:04:22.92 and then rested on the seventh day. 00:04:22.95\00:04:25.85 And when your Bible says that God rested 00:04:25.88\00:04:29.30 that's the Hebrew word Shabbat, 00:04:29.33\00:04:31.67 He Sabbath on the seventh day. 00:04:31.70\00:04:34.32 So God created the Sabbath 00:04:34.35\00:04:37.37 carving it out of time as an eternal reminder 00:04:37.40\00:04:42.23 that He is the Creator of the heavens and the earth. 00:04:42.26\00:04:46.91 In the Book of Revelation picking up on that very theme, 00:04:46.94\00:04:50.20 in Revelation 14, God knowing 00:04:50.23\00:04:53.89 what would happen in the last days, 00:04:53.92\00:04:56.43 created a special package of messages 00:04:56.46\00:04:59.52 to delivered by three angels and in Chapter 14:6, 00:04:59.55\00:05:04.31 "I saw another angel flying in the midair, 00:05:04.34\00:05:06.80 and he had the eternal gospel 00:05:06.83\00:05:08.53 to proclaim to those who live on the earth, 00:05:08.56\00:05:10.83 to every nation, tribe, language and people." 00:05:10.86\00:05:13.86 Every living being on this earth 00:05:13.89\00:05:16.34 is going to have the opportunity to hear this package 00:05:16.37\00:05:20.15 God's last message. Listen to what it says. 00:05:20.18\00:05:23.16 "He said in a loud voice, 'Fear God and give him glory, 00:05:23.19\00:05:27.29 because the hour of his judgment has come.' 00:05:27.32\00:05:29.70 This is an intense time, a time of God's judgment, 00:05:29.73\00:05:33.15 it's the end time. 00:05:33.18\00:05:35.61 'Worship him who made the heavens, 00:05:35.64\00:05:38.64 the earth, the sea and all that is in them.'" 00:05:38.67\00:05:43.71 God's last call is for His people to worship Him 00:05:43.74\00:05:49.56 as the Creator of the heavens and the earth. 00:05:49.59\00:05:55.14 And we learned in Revelation 13 at this very time, 00:05:55.17\00:05:58.80 practically the whole world will worship the beast, 00:05:58.83\00:06:01.71 the beast is the creature, God is the Creator. 00:06:01.74\00:06:05.31 The world will be divided 00:06:05.34\00:06:07.09 between those who worship the creature 00:06:07.12\00:06:09.67 and those who worship the Creator 00:06:09.70\00:06:11.64 of the heavens and the earth. 00:06:11.67\00:06:15.03 That's why we need to take the time 00:06:15.06\00:06:17.69 to understand the issues. 00:06:17.72\00:06:21.89 And when God said in His message, 00:06:21.92\00:06:24.12 "Worship him who made the heavens, 00:06:24.15\00:06:26.06 the earth, the sea and the springs of water." 00:06:26.09\00:06:28.81 He's taking us all the way back to the Old Testament, 00:06:28.84\00:06:32.22 Exodus 20 when He gave His Ten Commandments 00:06:32.25\00:06:37.49 to His people 00:06:37.52\00:06:39.52 and embedded in the heart of the law 00:06:39.55\00:06:41.98 is the message from God with all of the authority 00:06:42.01\00:06:46.57 of the Creator of the heavens and the earth. 00:06:46.60\00:06:48.69 After all who has the right to establish the law 00:06:48.72\00:06:52.91 other than the Creator who made us? 00:06:52.94\00:06:58.16 And so when the dragon tries to give his authority to the beast 00:06:58.19\00:07:02.98 is just a mockery, it's just a sham 00:07:03.01\00:07:05.80 because all authority is established 00:07:05.83\00:07:08.56 by the Creator of the heavens and the earth. 00:07:08.59\00:07:12.45 And so in Exodus 20, 00:07:12.48\00:07:14.89 he said in verse 8 to His people, 00:07:14.92\00:07:16.62 "Remember the Sabbath day." 00:07:16.65\00:07:19.27 These were people that had been slaves in Egypt 00:07:19.30\00:07:22.65 and He delivered them out of Egypt 00:07:22.68\00:07:24.93 and now they are free. They are a redeemed people. 00:07:24.96\00:07:29.85 And to a redeemed people, He says, 00:07:29.88\00:07:32.75 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 00:07:32.78\00:07:35.72 Six days you'll labor and do all of your work 00:07:35.75\00:07:38.41 but the seventh day is the Sabbath 00:07:38.44\00:07:40.41 to the Lord your God." On it you'll not work, why? 00:07:40.44\00:07:43.88 Because, verse 11, "In six days the Lord 00:07:43.91\00:07:48.67 made the heavens, the earth, the sea, 00:07:48.70\00:07:51.02 and all that is in them, 00:07:51.05\00:07:52.51 but he rested on the seventh day. 00:07:52.54\00:07:55.58 Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day 00:07:55.61\00:07:59.14 and He made it holy." 00:07:59.17\00:08:03.40 So God is saying to those who want to live 00:08:03.43\00:08:06.85 within that circle that He created. 00:08:06.88\00:08:10.05 Here's how I made you, 00:08:10.08\00:08:11.87 here are the principles for peace and joy and happiness 00:08:11.90\00:08:15.84 and one of those principles is to work six days 00:08:15.87\00:08:20.41 and to rest with Him on the seventh day. 00:08:20.44\00:08:23.95 You see God created man in His image. 00:08:23.98\00:08:29.56 And there was something in the heart of God 00:08:29.59\00:08:33.29 that caused Him to work six days 00:08:33.32\00:08:37.18 and then blessed the seventh day 00:08:37.21\00:08:39.70 and rest on that day. 00:08:39.73\00:08:41.72 I don't know why He did that 00:08:41.75\00:08:43.81 but the fact that He did 00:08:43.84\00:08:45.68 proves that there was something in His heart 00:08:45.71\00:08:48.01 that made Him want to do it. 00:08:48.04\00:08:50.22 He finished, He rested on the seventh day 00:08:50.25\00:08:54.46 and then He made man in His image. 00:08:54.49\00:08:59.10 And says, I want you to be like me. 00:08:59.13\00:09:02.44 You work six days 00:09:02.47\00:09:06.57 and rest on the seventh day. 00:09:06.60\00:09:12.40 Something in the heart of man. 00:09:12.43\00:09:14.77 Now why did God rest? 00:09:14.80\00:09:19.15 Did God worked so hard six days 00:09:19.18\00:09:22.16 creating the heavens and the earth and then after, 00:09:22.19\00:09:25.52 man, I'm pooped, I need a siesta, 00:09:25.55\00:09:30.85 is that what it was for? No. 00:09:30.88\00:09:34.20 Well, why did God rest? 00:09:34.23\00:09:37.55 John Paul II captured the essence of God's rest 00:09:37.58\00:09:41.80 in a paper that he published years ago. 00:09:41.83\00:09:44.54 Dies Domini, apostolic letter of the Holy Father 00:09:44.57\00:09:47.65 John Paul II to the bishops clergy in faith 00:09:47.68\00:09:49.88 for the Catholic Church on keeping the Lord's Day holy. 00:09:49.91\00:09:53.35 Listen to what he said, 00:09:53.38\00:09:55.01 he said, "The divine rest of the seventh day speaks, 00:09:55.04\00:09:59.32 as it were, of God's lingering 00:09:59.35\00:10:02.43 before the 'very good' work which his hand had wrought, 00:10:02.46\00:10:08.25 in order to cast upon it a gaze full of joyous delight. 00:10:08.28\00:10:14.06 This is a 'contemplative' gaze 00:10:14.09\00:10:16.85 which does not look to new accomplishments 00:10:16.88\00:10:19.72 but enjoys the beauty of what he had just achieved." 00:10:19.75\00:10:24.21 Don't you like that? 00:10:24.24\00:10:26.09 God worked six days and He rested. 00:10:26.12\00:10:28.81 You know, my wife, she has so much talent, 00:10:28.84\00:10:31.03 she can do all kinds of things and she paints pictures too. 00:10:31.06\00:10:35.38 You know, she-- I don't know 00:10:35.41\00:10:36.46 if you've ever seen an artist paint. 00:10:36.49\00:10:38.77 Dina is up there painting and painting 00:10:38.80\00:10:41.05 and I'm looking at the picture, looks done now, right? 00:10:41.08\00:10:44.48 No, not done yet. Oh, why not? 00:10:44.51\00:10:46.92 Watch, and she gets the brush 00:10:46.95\00:10:48.60 and puts a little paint on there and go, blip, did you see that? 00:10:48.63\00:10:52.47 No, I don't see. Well, it's not ready yet. 00:10:52.50\00:10:55.45 Blip, there's another one. 00:10:55.48\00:10:58.08 I can't tell the difference. 00:10:58.11\00:10:59.57 But soon, she puts down the brush, 00:11:03.39\00:11:09.27 steps back 00:11:09.30\00:11:12.04 and rests in the picture 00:11:12.07\00:11:16.60 she had just painted. 00:11:16.63\00:11:19.33 That's what God did, He created everything. 00:11:19.36\00:11:24.95 The crowning act of creation was a man and a woman 00:11:24.98\00:11:29.90 and when He had finished that, 00:11:29.93\00:11:33.38 He put down the brush, 00:11:33.41\00:11:36.76 step back and rested in what He had done. 00:11:36.79\00:11:43.72 What a picture of God? 00:11:43.75\00:11:46.80 John Paul II captured that beautifully. 00:11:46.83\00:11:50.77 Interestingly, he goes on to say, 00:11:50.80\00:11:54.49 "God blessed the seventh day and He made it holy." 00:11:54.52\00:11:58.35 Genesis 2:3 and that's correct. 00:11:58.38\00:12:01.34 It's exactly what we just read from the Bible. 00:12:01.37\00:12:04.88 But curiously, in the next paragraph, 00:12:04.91\00:12:09.61 "Sunday then is the day of rest 00:12:09.64\00:12:12.72 because it is the day blessed by God 00:12:12.75\00:12:16.09 and made holy by Him. 00:12:16.12\00:12:18.84 And set apart from the other days 00:12:18.87\00:12:21.89 to be among them the Lord's Day." 00:12:21.92\00:12:25.07 Now how can he say God blessed the seventh day 00:12:25.10\00:12:29.08 and made it holy, 00:12:29.11\00:12:30.59 therefore Sunday is the day that God blessed 00:12:30.62\00:12:34.15 because when I look at my handy little calendar on my desk, 00:12:34.18\00:12:37.84 it says the seventh day is Saturday not Sunday 00:12:37.87\00:12:40.97 and when I open my encyclopedia, 00:12:41.00\00:12:43.46 it's sitting right here for me, this is the yes volume 00:12:43.49\00:12:46.70 and I open it up to the word Sabbath 00:12:46.73\00:12:49.12 and even the world book encyclopedia says 00:12:49.15\00:12:51.92 Sabbath comes on Saturday, the seventh day of the week 00:12:51.95\00:12:55.80 but today Christians observe the Sabbath on Sunday 00:12:55.83\00:13:00.00 because that's the day they believe 00:13:00.03\00:13:01.57 Jesus rose from the dead on the first day of the week. 00:13:01.60\00:13:04.39 But the seventh day, it says is the Sabbath. 00:13:04.42\00:13:07.19 So how can John Paul II say that 00:13:07.22\00:13:11.12 God blessed the seventh day 00:13:11.15\00:13:13.83 and then therefore Sunday is the day that He made holy? 00:13:13.86\00:13:18.56 Well, maybe he thinks Sunday is the seventh day. 00:13:18.59\00:13:22.19 Well, how could he say that? 00:13:22.22\00:13:28.42 God rested, He created the man 00:13:28.45\00:13:33.77 and the woman and He rested. 00:13:33.80\00:13:37.12 Sometimes people tell me, oh, well, if that's so good, 00:13:40.48\00:13:44.71 I want to do every day, 00:13:44.74\00:13:47.50 I want to keep holy every day, I want to rest every day, 00:13:47.53\00:13:50.08 you can't do that for two reasons. 00:13:50.11\00:13:52.22 One, God said I worked six days 00:13:52.25\00:13:56.86 and I rested on the seventh day 00:13:56.89\00:13:58.78 and I want you to work six days 00:13:58.81\00:14:00.94 and rest on the seventh day, 00:14:00.97\00:14:02.71 working six days is just as much a part 00:14:02.74\00:14:04.91 of entering into the Sabbath rest 00:14:04.94\00:14:06.85 as resting on the seventh day, no lazy Christians, sorry. 00:14:06.88\00:14:12.69 You can't keep every day, 00:14:12.72\00:14:15.23 can't rest in God every day like you can on the seventh day 00:14:15.26\00:14:19.45 because that's the day God rested. 00:14:19.48\00:14:21.90 And secondly, He did not bless any other day. 00:14:21.93\00:14:25.38 The Bible tells us God blessed the Sabbath day 00:14:25.41\00:14:28.94 and He made it holy. 00:14:28.97\00:14:31.59 Genesis 2, "God blessed the seventh day 00:14:31.62\00:14:34.86 and He made it holy." 00:14:34.89\00:14:36.10 He did not bless the first, second, 00:14:36.13\00:14:37.99 third, fourth, fifth, sixth day, 00:14:38.02\00:14:39.88 He blessed the seventh day. And He made that day holy. 00:14:39.91\00:14:44.60 So we can't keep any day holy, 00:14:44.63\00:14:48.53 we have to keep the day God made us holy. 00:14:48.56\00:14:53.09 Now follow me, some people try to say, 00:14:53.12\00:14:56.19 well, I start my work on Monday 00:14:56.22\00:15:00.69 so my seventh day is Sunday, 00:15:00.72\00:15:02.22 that's why John Paul II said that, no. 00:15:02.25\00:15:06.18 it's not your seventh day that He blessed, 00:15:06.21\00:15:11.02 it's God's seventh day that He blessed. 00:15:11.05\00:15:16.57 It's not your rest that's holy, it's His rest that's holy. 00:15:16.60\00:15:21.48 God rested on the seventh day. 00:15:24.55\00:15:27.55 In fact, He created Adam and Eve on the sixth day 00:15:27.58\00:15:33.41 and the very first full day that Adam and Eve 00:15:33.44\00:15:36.67 had on this earth was the seventh day 00:15:36.70\00:15:39.31 when God was rested. 00:15:39.34\00:15:40.82 So on their first day, 00:15:40.85\00:15:43.06 they entered into God's seventh day rest. 00:15:43.09\00:15:47.41 It's not their rest day and haven't worked yet, 00:15:47.44\00:15:49.87 it's God's rest that He wants us to enter into, 00:15:49.90\00:15:55.20 on His day not ours. 00:15:55.23\00:15:58.29 Hebrews, okay, Hebrews makes that clear 00:15:58.32\00:16:00.87 in the fourth Chapter. 00:16:00.90\00:16:02.33 Go back to the old-- 00:16:02.36\00:16:03.55 the New Testament, now Hebrews 4:3 says 00:16:03.58\00:16:08.93 we who have believed can enter that rest, 00:16:08.96\00:16:11.68 the rest that the Old Testament saints never did enter into 00:16:11.71\00:16:15.34 because in verse 3, 00:16:15.37\00:16:17.01 he says God's work has been finished 00:16:17.04\00:16:19.23 since the creation of the world. 00:16:19.26\00:16:21.04 Verse 4, to someway he had spoken 00:16:21.07\00:16:23.21 about the seventh day which day, 00:16:23.24\00:16:25.49 the seventh day in these words on the seventh day, 00:16:25.52\00:16:29.91 God rested from all of His work. 00:16:29.94\00:16:33.03 Therefore, verse 6, it still remains 00:16:33.06\00:16:35.15 that some will enter into that rest, what rest? 00:16:35.18\00:16:38.71 His rest, God's rest. 00:16:38.74\00:16:42.88 Verse 9, "There remains therefore 00:16:42.91\00:16:45.68 a Sabbath rest for the people of God. 00:16:45.71\00:16:50.87 Because anyone who enters into God's rest 00:16:50.90\00:16:57.12 rests from his own work just like God did from His." 00:16:57.15\00:17:03.91 So how did God rest from His work? 00:17:03.94\00:17:06.91 Because that's what we want to do to enter into His rest. 00:17:06.94\00:17:11.53 We work six days 00:17:11.56\00:17:15.00 and rest on the day that He blessed, 00:17:15.03\00:17:19.56 made holy, set apart and rested. 00:17:19.59\00:17:26.12 God is not gonna withhold the blessing from you 00:17:26.15\00:17:30.14 just because you happen to be born 00:17:30.17\00:17:31.81 in the New Testament times. 00:17:31.84\00:17:34.14 Good news for us today. God's reminder. 00:17:34.17\00:17:41.08 Well, then which day is the Sabbath day? 00:17:41.11\00:17:48.98 I just read from the encyclopedia, 00:17:49.01\00:17:52.34 says the seventh day is the Sabbath day. 00:17:52.37\00:17:57.39 Well, which day is that? 00:17:57.42\00:17:59.60 I just read it from the encyclopedia, 00:17:59.63\00:18:02.39 it said Saturday. 00:18:02.42\00:18:04.82 So how come John Paul II said Sunday. 00:18:04.85\00:18:07.77 Well, we're gonna come to that, just hold on, 00:18:07.80\00:18:10.28 that's on page 12, I'm still on page 2. 00:18:10.31\00:18:16.67 Which day? How do we know the seventh day is Saturday? 00:18:16.70\00:18:21.94 Well, you could look at the encyclopedia, 00:18:21.97\00:18:23.68 but I don't know about you, 00:18:23.71\00:18:24.74 but that's not good enough for me. 00:18:24.77\00:18:27.37 I rather get it from God's word, wouldn't you? 00:18:27.40\00:18:31.09 So let's take a look, what does the Bible tell us 00:18:31.12\00:18:34.17 about which day the God blessed and made holy. 00:18:34.20\00:18:38.80 The New Testament makes it clear for us. 00:18:38.83\00:18:41.46 Look at Luke, the Gospel of Luke 23, 00:18:41.49\00:18:44.48 this one is fun, Luke 23. 00:18:44.51\00:18:50.07 Jesus had just died and in verse 53, 00:18:50.10\00:18:53.34 they took His body down from the cross 00:18:53.37\00:18:56.56 and they wrapped it in linen cloth, 00:18:56.59\00:18:58.85 placed it in a tomb. 00:18:58.88\00:19:01.17 Verse 54, when did Jesus die? 00:19:01.20\00:19:04.69 Verse 54, it was the preparation day, 00:19:04.72\00:19:09.07 so when did he die? He died on the preparation day. 00:19:09.10\00:19:14.60 And the Sabbath was about to begin. 00:19:14.63\00:19:16.95 So when is the preparation day? 00:19:16.98\00:19:18.88 It's the day before the Sabbath, 00:19:18.91\00:19:21.06 that's when Jesus died. 00:19:21.09\00:19:23.07 The preparation day, the Sabbath was about to begin, 00:19:23.10\00:19:26.17 so what did they do? 00:19:26.20\00:19:27.28 They went home, they prepared 00:19:27.31\00:19:28.51 spices and perfumes 00:19:28.54\00:19:30.09 but they rested on the Sabbath 00:19:30.12\00:19:32.54 in obedience to the commandment. 00:19:32.57\00:19:34.02 So when did he die? 00:19:34.05\00:19:35.28 On the preparation day, what was the next day? 00:19:35.31\00:19:37.89 The Sabbath. What did they do? 00:19:37.92\00:19:39.46 They rested on the Sabbath. 00:19:39.49\00:19:41.12 And then Chapter 24:1, 00:19:44.80\00:19:48.35 "On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, 00:19:48.38\00:19:51.97 the women took the spices 00:19:52.00\00:19:53.15 they had prepared and went to the tomb. 00:19:53.18\00:19:54.76 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 00:19:54.79\00:19:56.92 when they entered, they did not find 00:19:56.95\00:19:58.34 the body of the Lord Jesus." Why not? 00:19:58.37\00:20:01.57 Because He had risen, He had risen. 00:20:01.60\00:20:04.19 When was this? 00:20:04.22\00:20:05.41 When they went to the tomb early in the morning, 00:20:05.44\00:20:08.10 first day of the week. 00:20:08.13\00:20:11.07 So now we have the days of the week 00:20:11.10\00:20:12.84 lined up from the Bible. 00:20:12.87\00:20:14.28 When did He die? The preparation day. 00:20:14.31\00:20:16.98 What was the next day? The Sabbath. 00:20:17.01\00:20:19.59 And then the next day, when He was raised up, 00:20:19.62\00:20:23.33 what does it say? The first day of the week. 00:20:23.36\00:20:27.12 Now follow me, 00:20:27.15\00:20:29.19 practically, the whole Christian world 00:20:29.22\00:20:31.29 like John Paul II said, 00:20:31.32\00:20:33.41 practically, the whole Christian world observes Sunday 00:20:33.44\00:20:37.09 in honor of the resurrection of Jesus. 00:20:37.12\00:20:40.95 Am I right or not? 00:20:40.98\00:20:43.14 Are we fighting over which day is the resurrection day? 00:20:43.17\00:20:46.47 Nobody is, maybe a few people, 00:20:46.50\00:20:48.70 nobody is fighting over that. 00:20:48.73\00:20:51.39 Practically, the whole world observes Sunday, 00:20:51.42\00:20:54.28 Christian world in honor of the resurrection of Jesus 00:20:54.31\00:20:57.28 but the Bible says it was on the first day of the week. 00:20:57.31\00:21:01.74 So the resurrection day is the first day of the week, 00:21:01.77\00:21:04.36 then and the first day of the week is Sunday 00:21:04.39\00:21:09.11 and it doesn't take much of a computer 00:21:09.14\00:21:11.98 to figure out that the day before Sunday, 00:21:12.01\00:21:14.57 it must be the seventh day of the week and that's Saturday. 00:21:14.60\00:21:18.53 And you know that the Jews still observe Saturday today. 00:21:18.56\00:21:24.09 They still do. They know when it is. 00:21:24.12\00:21:31.22 Sunday the resurrection is the first day, 00:21:31.25\00:21:35.41 seventh day, Saturday. 00:21:35.44\00:21:37.84 That's the day that God blessed and made holy. 00:21:37.87\00:21:44.38 God didn't create the Sabbath and then say, 00:21:44.41\00:21:50.11 well, I got a holy day here what am I gonna do? 00:21:50.14\00:21:53.35 I know what I'll do I will make a man to keep it. 00:21:53.38\00:21:57.48 He didn't do that. 00:21:57.51\00:22:00.02 He made the man on the sixth day 00:22:00.05\00:22:03.52 and then He created the Sabbath it says, 00:22:03.55\00:22:06.29 I got a man here and a woman, what am I gonna do? 00:22:06.32\00:22:10.79 I know what I'll do, 00:22:10.82\00:22:13.00 I'll rest with them and He created the Sabbath. 00:22:13.03\00:22:19.96 And gave it to us as an eternal reminder 00:22:19.99\00:22:24.41 that He is the Creator of the heavens and the earth. 00:22:24.44\00:22:29.59 Oh, what a God? 00:22:29.62\00:22:30.65 No wonder the devil hates the Sabbath so much 00:22:30.68\00:22:34.64 because it commemorates the thing that he can't do. 00:22:34.67\00:22:40.56 He can't create and he hates it. 00:22:40.59\00:22:46.35 By the way when the Bible says 00:22:46.38\00:22:50.25 they went to the tomb on the first day of the week, 00:22:50.28\00:22:54.03 Greek lesson here, 00:22:54.06\00:22:56.22 the Greek word mia ton sabbaton 00:22:56.25\00:22:59.23 is translated first day of the week 00:22:59.26\00:23:01.59 but the actual meaning of mia ton sabbaton is 00:23:01.62\00:23:06.13 first day after the Sabbath. 00:23:06.16\00:23:09.63 So the first day after the Sabbath 00:23:09.66\00:23:12.60 can't be the Sabbath. 00:23:12.63\00:23:18.09 Because it's the first day after the Sabbath. 00:23:18.12\00:23:23.66 What kind of an example did Jesus give for us in Luke 4:16, 00:23:23.69\00:23:28.54 "He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, 00:23:28.57\00:23:30.40 and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, 00:23:30.43\00:23:32.74 as was his custom." So what did Jesus do? 00:23:32.77\00:23:37.14 He observed the Sabbath. You'd say, well, He was a Jew. 00:23:37.17\00:23:41.62 Yes, He was, 00:23:41.65\00:23:43.43 but He was also the Creator of the heavens and the earth. 00:23:43.46\00:23:46.33 He was also a man 00:23:46.36\00:23:48.26 and He's also our example, isn't He? 00:23:48.29\00:23:52.43 And by the way who is the true Israel of God today? 00:23:52.46\00:23:57.67 Those who believe in Jesus Christ, 00:23:57.70\00:24:00.72 it doesn't matter if you're Jew and Gentile 00:24:00.75\00:24:03.64 that day that special appointment, 00:24:03.67\00:24:05.99 that's a divine appointment, 00:24:06.02\00:24:07.43 it comes on the seventh day of the week. 00:24:07.46\00:24:10.56 Time to meet with God, celebrate who He is, 00:24:10.59\00:24:15.05 forget about all the problems of the world. 00:24:15.08\00:24:17.50 Wow, He must have been looking ahead of our time 00:24:17.53\00:24:20.77 and saw how badly we would need it. 00:24:20.80\00:24:22.59 So Jesus went every Sabbath, 00:24:25.87\00:24:29.27 God would ask me, Colon, why did you insist 00:24:29.30\00:24:32.55 on observing the seventh day 00:24:32.58\00:24:34.17 instead of the first like everybody else? 00:24:34.20\00:24:36.26 And I said because Jesus did, 00:24:36.29\00:24:40.78 I think that's a pretty good answer. 00:24:40.81\00:24:43.77 I think God will accept that. 00:24:43.80\00:24:46.70 Just follow the Lamb, amen. 00:24:46.73\00:24:49.81 May not be, He may go places we don't want to go 00:24:49.84\00:24:54.58 but follow Him and you'll always be blessed. 00:24:54.61\00:24:59.26 Well, what did He teach about it anyway? 00:24:59.29\00:25:04.23 In Matthew 12 He said, when He went to a synagogue, 00:25:04.26\00:25:08.23 he saw man there with the shriveled hand, 00:25:08.26\00:25:10.05 verse 9 looking for a reason to accuse Jesus. 00:25:10.08\00:25:12.41 The Jews asked Him, 00:25:12.44\00:25:13.72 "Is it lawful to heal on a Sabbath?" 00:25:13.75\00:25:15.98 Oh, they wanted to trap Him. 00:25:16.01\00:25:18.54 And He said to them verse 11, 00:25:18.57\00:25:20.10 "If any of you have a sheep and he falls into a pit. 00:25:20.13\00:25:23.96 Aren't you gonna take him out on the Sabbath day?" 00:25:23.99\00:25:28.92 Then how much more valuable is a man than the sheep, 00:25:28.95\00:25:31.53 therefore it's lawful to do good on the Sabbath. 00:25:31.56\00:25:35.23 You see if sheep was money 00:25:35.26\00:25:37.61 and one of the sheep fell in the pit, 00:25:37.64\00:25:38.86 they're gonna take him out because that's valuable to them. 00:25:38.89\00:25:41.80 But Jesus is saying you don't understand 00:25:41.83\00:25:43.74 a man is a lot more valuable than a sheep. 00:25:43.77\00:25:47.57 So it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath. 00:25:47.60\00:25:49.53 He wasn't saying, well, you don't have 00:25:49.56\00:25:51.16 to keep Sabbath anymore, New Testament's coming up. 00:25:51.19\00:25:56.63 No, He taught them how to observe 00:25:56.66\00:26:00.27 and enjoy a Sabbath blessing. 00:26:00.30\00:26:05.03 They had attached so many traditions to the Sabbath 00:26:05.06\00:26:08.07 that Jesus had to strip away their traditions 00:26:08.10\00:26:11.05 and show them the true beauty of the Sabbath. 00:26:11.08\00:26:13.41 Jesus said the Sabbath was made for man, 00:26:13.44\00:26:16.95 it was made for mankind. It was made for you, 00:26:16.98\00:26:20.54 you were not made to observe the Sabbath. 00:26:20.57\00:26:22.83 It was made for you to rest with Me from your work, 00:26:22.86\00:26:27.81 like I rested from Mine. 00:26:27.84\00:26:30.35 What better way to rest than to do good for other people. 00:26:30.38\00:26:35.82 He was showing them how to observe the Sabbath. 00:26:35.85\00:26:37.63 Well, they were not happy campers. 00:26:37.66\00:26:40.86 In fact the Bible says in verse 14, 00:26:40.89\00:26:43.33 they went out and plotted how they might destroy Jesus. 00:26:43.36\00:26:46.36 People get angry when you start tampering 00:26:46.39\00:26:50.40 with traditions that they have attached 00:26:50.43\00:26:53.56 to the Sabbath. 00:26:53.59\00:26:55.99 The Pharisees did it, 00:26:56.02\00:26:57.47 they've done it through the ages. 00:26:57.50\00:27:00.08 They got angry when we tamper with man's traditions 00:27:00.11\00:27:03.68 that he attaches to the Sabbath. 00:27:03.71\00:27:05.46 Why did they get so angry? 00:27:05.49\00:27:07.67 What was it that made them so angry? 00:27:07.70\00:27:09.96 Romans 8:7, "The sinful mind is hostile to God. 00:27:09.99\00:27:14.45 It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. 00:27:14.48\00:27:19.66 You, however, are not controlled 00:27:19.69\00:27:21.01 by the sinful nature but by the Spirit." 00:27:21.04\00:27:24.25 You see the reason they got angry is 00:27:24.28\00:27:25.98 because they were controlled by this sinful nature. 00:27:26.01\00:27:29.46 The sinful nature rebels against the things of God. 00:27:29.49\00:27:32.64 It rebels against the law of God. 00:27:32.67\00:27:35.00 It rebels against the good things 00:27:35.03\00:27:37.36 that God made for us to enjoy 00:27:37.39\00:27:39.51 within that circle that He made for us. 00:27:39.54\00:27:41.90 It rebels against that. 00:27:41.93\00:27:43.54 And whenever I find myself rebelling 00:27:43.57\00:27:45.96 against something that I discover God made for me, 00:27:45.99\00:27:49.17 I know that's my sinful nature 00:27:49.20\00:27:51.46 trying to stick up its ugly head. 00:27:51.49\00:27:53.26 And I got to smash it back down again and say, 00:27:53.29\00:27:55.83 "God, let me be led by the spirit 00:27:55.86\00:27:58.12 and not by my sinful nature." 00:27:58.15\00:27:59.88 What did Jesus command about the Sabbath? 00:28:05.95\00:28:11.43 This is one, Matthew 24, this is so powerful. 00:28:11.46\00:28:16.03 Here's the verse that convinced me 00:28:16.06\00:28:18.62 that God still had a Sabbath blessing for us, 00:28:18.65\00:28:21.45 even in the New Testament times. 00:28:21.48\00:28:24.20 You want to see it? I will show you anyway. 00:28:24.23\00:28:28.34 Matthew 24, disciples were looking at the temple 00:28:28.37\00:28:32.69 and they said, "Oh, look how beautiful the building." 00:28:32.72\00:28:34.65 They're always caught up in things, 00:28:34.68\00:28:36.86 oh, beautiful building. 00:28:36.89\00:28:39.80 And Jesus said, "I tell you the time is coming 00:28:39.83\00:28:41.93 and there will not be one stone left standing on another here." 00:28:41.96\00:28:45.50 "When is that gonna be, give us a sign" they asked Him. 00:28:45.53\00:28:48.35 So Jesus gave them some signs 00:28:48.38\00:28:50.63 as to when the end of the world would be 00:28:50.66\00:28:53.58 and when the temple would be destroyed. 00:28:53.61\00:28:56.01 And listen to what He said, "When you see these signs, 00:28:56.04\00:29:00.64 I want you to flee." 00:29:00.67\00:29:02.69 Flee the city, flee for your lives. 00:29:02.72\00:29:05.75 And when you do, verse 20, 00:29:05.78\00:29:09.61 "Pray that your flight will not have to take place 00:29:09.64\00:29:12.11 in the winter or on the Sabbath." 00:29:12.14\00:29:18.75 When you see these signs, 00:29:18.78\00:29:20.02 Jerusalem is about to be destroyed, 00:29:20.05\00:29:21.47 you better get out of there. 00:29:21.50\00:29:23.71 But I want you to pray that 00:29:23.74\00:29:24.77 it won't have to be on the Sabbath. 00:29:24.80\00:29:27.57 Now Jerusalem was destroyed, 00:29:27.60\00:29:30.04 Roman General Titus destroyed that city, 00:29:30.07\00:29:32.07 there wasn't a stone left on another. 00:29:32.10\00:29:34.70 It's like Jesus said and it was in the year 70 AD. 00:29:34.73\00:29:41.00 Now Jesus died on the cross in 31 AD. 00:29:41.03\00:29:45.13 So here He is before 31 AD looking ahead 00:29:45.16\00:29:48.56 to 70 AD about 40 years into the future after the cross 00:29:48.59\00:29:54.23 and He is saying on that day when you have to flee, 00:29:54.26\00:29:56.43 pray you won't have to flee on the Sabbath. 00:29:56.46\00:29:58.37 So Jesus, this is what nailed it for me, 00:29:58.40\00:30:01.01 Jesus expected New Testament Christian 00:30:01.04\00:30:04.03 to still be enjoying a Sabbath rest 00:30:04.06\00:30:07.56 40 years after He died on the cross. 00:30:07.59\00:30:10.97 That proves to me it was not done away 00:30:11.00\00:30:13.37 with that at the cross. 00:30:13.40\00:30:14.49 No way, He still 00:30:14.52\00:30:16.19 or maybe Jesus didn't know... know. 00:30:16.22\00:30:19.56 Jesus knew, didn't He? 00:30:19.59\00:30:22.64 He made the Sabbath, 00:30:22.67\00:30:24.29 He knew 40 years after the cross. 00:30:24.32\00:30:30.30 In fact what we're talking about 00:30:30.33\00:30:31.99 the command is a neat thought 00:30:32.02\00:30:36.51 and it's in two verses, 00:30:36.54\00:30:37.60 and I don't know if it's a coincidence or what 00:30:37.63\00:30:39.43 because I know the Bible didn't have verse numbers 00:30:39.46\00:30:41.65 when it was written originally. 00:30:41.68\00:30:44.26 But in these two verses, Acts 4:12 and James 4:12. 00:30:44.29\00:30:50.81 In Acts 4:12, "There's no other name under heaven 00:30:50.84\00:30:54.15 whereby you can be saved." 00:30:54.18\00:30:56.43 What name is that? That's Jesus, isn't it? 00:30:56.46\00:30:59.78 No other name except Jesus whereby you can be saved. 00:30:59.81\00:31:02.18 Acts 4:12 and James 4:12, 00:31:02.21\00:31:06.20 in James 4:12 the Bible says, 00:31:06.23\00:31:08.40 "There is one judge, there is one law giver 00:31:08.43\00:31:10.78 and that is He who is able to save." 00:31:10.81\00:31:14.62 Now if there's only one name under heaven 00:31:14.65\00:31:16.34 whereby we can be saved 00:31:16.37\00:31:18.25 and if there's only one judge and one law giver 00:31:18.28\00:31:20.34 and that's the one who is able to save, 00:31:20.37\00:31:23.80 then the law giver has to be the one who is able to save. 00:31:23.83\00:31:28.67 And if the one who is able to save is Jesus Christ, 00:31:28.70\00:31:32.98 then the law giver has to be Jesus Christ. 00:31:33.01\00:31:37.69 Who was it that reach down 00:31:37.72\00:31:40.03 from the cloud on top of Mount Sinai 00:31:40.06\00:31:42.29 and took those tables of stone out of the hands of Moses 00:31:42.32\00:31:45.86 and wrote on the tables of stone with His own finger. 00:31:45.89\00:31:49.12 Remember the Sabbath of the Lord your God, 00:31:49.15\00:31:53.21 it was the Son of God, Jesus Christ. 00:31:53.24\00:31:56.58 Before He became a man, no wonder Jesus said, 00:31:56.61\00:32:00.73 "The son of man is Lord of the Sabbath." 00:32:00.76\00:32:06.21 Remember the Sabbath of the Lord, your God. Wow. 00:32:06.24\00:32:12.47 Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath because He made it. 00:32:12.50\00:32:17.46 It was the Son of God who made all things we learn. 00:32:17.49\00:32:21.61 It was Jesus before He became a man. 00:32:21.64\00:32:24.52 Jesus who bent down formed the body 00:32:24.55\00:32:27.27 from the dust of the ground, 00:32:27.30\00:32:28.44 breath into at the breath of the life 00:32:28.47\00:32:30.20 wants to become a living being. 00:32:30.23\00:32:32.13 It was Jesus who created man, 00:32:32.16\00:32:34.56 it was Jesus who said with His tables of stone, 00:32:34.59\00:32:37.73 "Look, here is how I made you. 00:32:37.76\00:32:40.17 Here is the circle, stay inside the circle 00:32:40.20\00:32:43.20 and you will have peace and joy and happiness. 00:32:43.23\00:32:45.97 Step outside of the circle 00:32:46.00\00:32:47.63 and you will suffer and be hurt." 00:32:47.66\00:32:50.73 It was Jesus, the Son of God. 00:32:50.76\00:32:56.58 And He wrapped the Sabbath into one big package 00:32:56.61\00:32:59.52 and says, "Here this is for you, 00:32:59.55\00:33:01.94 I made it for you." 00:33:01.97\00:33:04.22 Sabbath was made for man. 00:33:04.25\00:33:09.09 I'll tell you another something special about the Sabbath. 00:33:09.12\00:33:12.34 We just learned Jesus died on the preparation day, 00:33:12.37\00:33:15.49 that's the day before the Sabbath. 00:33:15.52\00:33:18.68 And then He rested on the Sabbath day. 00:33:18.71\00:33:23.32 And then He rose up again on the first day. 00:33:23.35\00:33:27.03 Do you think it was a coincidence 00:33:27.06\00:33:29.71 that Jesus finished His work for you 00:33:29.74\00:33:33.33 and me on the preparation day 00:33:33.36\00:33:36.64 and rested on the Sabbath? 00:33:36.67\00:33:39.26 And then rose again on the first day of the week, 00:33:39.29\00:33:42.06 the Sabbath is the sign that God is the Creator 00:33:42.09\00:33:45.91 of the heavens and the earth 00:33:45.94\00:33:47.30 but it's also a sign that He is our redeemer 00:33:47.33\00:33:50.81 and re-creator in Jesus Christ. 00:33:50.84\00:33:54.37 It wasn't a coincidence. 00:33:54.40\00:33:57.88 That's why the devil hates the Sabbath. 00:33:57.91\00:34:00.51 But why does almost everybody observe 00:34:05.41\00:34:07.49 the first day instead of the seventh day? 00:34:07.52\00:34:12.05 Surely the New Testament must have changed it. 00:34:12.08\00:34:16.24 Well, let's take a look. 00:34:16.27\00:34:17.89 There are eight verses in the New Testament 00:34:17.92\00:34:20.17 that explicitly mentions the first day of the week. 00:34:20.20\00:34:25.37 Six of them we've already seen, 00:34:25.40\00:34:27.96 they're all just like the one we read in Matthew 00:34:27.99\00:34:29.85 that says early in the morning 00:34:29.88\00:34:31.21 they went to the tomb on the first day of the week 00:34:31.24\00:34:32.98 and they found the stone rolled away 00:34:33.01\00:34:34.44 and the tomb was empty. 00:34:34.47\00:34:36.85 There's no hint there that the Sabbath was changed 00:34:36.88\00:34:39.84 from the seventh day to the first day. 00:34:39.87\00:34:41.85 In fact when it says on the first day of the week, 00:34:41.88\00:34:44.58 it was on the first day after the Sabbath, 00:34:44.61\00:34:46.97 they went to the tomb, so it couldn't be 00:34:47.00\00:34:49.23 changing the Sabbath in those six verses. 00:34:49.26\00:34:52.88 But there are two others that are often used today 00:34:52.91\00:34:55.85 to try to show that the Sabbath has been changed 00:34:55.88\00:34:58.25 from the seventh day to the first. 00:34:58.28\00:35:00.31 And so I want to take a look at those 00:35:00.34\00:35:01.98 in 1 Corinthians 16 00:35:02.01\00:35:04.59 is one of them, 1 Corinthians 16:1. 00:35:04.62\00:35:09.30 Paul writes to the church at Corinth, 00:35:09.33\00:35:11.34 "He says now about the collection for God's people, 00:35:11.37\00:35:14.08 do it I told the Galatian churches to do. 00:35:14.11\00:35:16.96 On the first day of every week 00:35:16.99\00:35:18.33 each one of you should set aside some of money 00:35:18.36\00:35:20.98 in keeping with his income, 00:35:21.01\00:35:22.34 saving it up so that when I come 00:35:22.37\00:35:24.10 no collections will be have to be made." 00:35:24.13\00:35:25.83 When do they have to do this? 00:35:25.86\00:35:27.08 On the first day of the week. 00:35:27.11\00:35:29.80 And so many will point to that verse that you see 00:35:29.83\00:35:32.44 they were passing the collection plate in church 00:35:32.47\00:35:34.24 on the first day of the week. 00:35:34.27\00:35:35.53 So now they're keeping the first day 00:35:35.56\00:35:37.31 instead of the seventh. 00:35:37.34\00:35:39.82 But I would ask where does it say anything 00:35:39.85\00:35:43.48 about passing the collection plate in church. 00:35:43.51\00:35:48.68 Listen to it again, "On the first day of every week 00:35:48.71\00:35:52.82 each one of you should set aside 00:35:52.85\00:35:55.10 a some of money in keeping with his income, saving it up. 00:35:55.13\00:35:59.04 So that when I come no collections 00:35:59.07\00:36:00.44 will have to be made." 00:36:00.47\00:36:02.40 Does it say anything about passing 00:36:02.43\00:36:03.75 an offering plate in church? 00:36:03.78\00:36:06.59 In fact in the original Greek meaning of set aside, 00:36:06.62\00:36:09.67 it really means set aside by himself not in church. 00:36:09.70\00:36:15.48 And furthermore even if there was a meeting in church. 00:36:15.51\00:36:19.29 Listen, when was that meeting? 00:36:19.32\00:36:20.93 It was on the first day of the week 00:36:20.96\00:36:23.66 but in the Greek it says 00:36:23.69\00:36:24.98 on the first day after the Sabbath. 00:36:25.01\00:36:27.03 So how can the first day 00:36:27.06\00:36:28.63 after the Sabbath now be the Sabbath? 00:36:28.66\00:36:32.49 See, it never fits. 00:36:32.52\00:36:35.17 Now there's one other verse, 00:36:35.20\00:36:37.40 Acts 20, this is the fun one. 00:36:37.43\00:36:40.24 So turn there with me. Interesting story. 00:36:40.27\00:36:44.50 "On the first day of the week 00:36:44.53\00:36:46.18 we came together to break bread." 00:36:46.21\00:36:48.47 Now Paul is preaching 00:36:48.50\00:36:51.14 and they're breaking bread on the first day of the week. 00:36:51.17\00:36:54.42 Now we have a little worship service, 00:36:54.45\00:36:56.99 church service may be on the first day of the week. 00:36:57.02\00:37:00.81 But we have to ask a question. 00:37:00.84\00:37:05.88 Just because they worshipped 00:37:05.91\00:37:08.10 and preached and prayed together 00:37:08.13\00:37:09.89 and broke bread together on the first day of the week, 00:37:09.92\00:37:12.40 does that prove that the Sabbath has been changed? 00:37:12.43\00:37:16.92 Not really because when it says 00:37:16.95\00:37:19.58 on the first day of the week 00:37:19.61\00:37:20.68 if we're reading in Greek remember 00:37:20.71\00:37:22.82 on the first day after the Sabbath. 00:37:22.85\00:37:24.94 We came together to break bread. 00:37:24.97\00:37:27.78 But why would they be coming together 00:37:27.81\00:37:29.51 on the first day after the Sabbath? 00:37:29.54\00:37:32.59 Well, that's a good question. 00:37:32.62\00:37:35.04 Let's ask ourselves another question. 00:37:35.07\00:37:38.16 When was this on the first day of the week? 00:37:38.19\00:37:41.53 Watch. 00:37:41.56\00:37:42.59 "On the first day of the week 00:37:42.62\00:37:43.65 who came together to break bread." 00:37:43.68\00:37:45.24 Now breaking bread can also mean eat. 00:37:45.27\00:37:48.63 Acts 2 says they came together 00:37:48.66\00:37:50.89 and they broke bread every day. 00:37:50.92\00:37:52.89 So that doesn't mean that it's a Sabbath, 00:37:56.02\00:37:59.31 in fact they were eating. 00:37:59.34\00:38:01.65 Now watch, Paul intended to leave the next day 00:38:01.68\00:38:06.22 so he kept on speaking until midnight, 00:38:06.25\00:38:08.22 they were many lamps in the upstairs room 00:38:08.25\00:38:10.03 where they were meeting. 00:38:10.06\00:38:12.43 Paul preached until midnight 00:38:12.46\00:38:16.61 and only get to go till 8:30? 00:38:16.64\00:38:21.46 I wished I'd been born in Paul's day. 00:38:21.49\00:38:24.51 I could go till midnight but don't worry, 00:38:24.54\00:38:26.53 I won't do that to you. 00:38:26.56\00:38:31.29 You didn't have to say that, amen. 00:38:31.32\00:38:33.30 There were lights in the upstairs room 00:38:38.47\00:38:40.42 where they were meeting-- when was this meeting? 00:38:40.45\00:38:42.16 It was in the evening, wasn't it? 00:38:42.19\00:38:44.54 It was in the evening of the first day of the week. 00:38:44.57\00:38:48.28 Now we learnt that there was evening 00:38:48.31\00:38:51.09 and there was morning the first day. 00:38:51.12\00:38:54.64 So when does the day begin? 00:38:54.67\00:38:56.75 The day in Bible times, 00:38:56.78\00:38:58.61 they didn't have watches in Bible times. 00:38:58.64\00:39:02.05 God didn't say Adam, when you see Mickey's 00:39:02.08\00:39:04.95 big hand go around 24 times 00:39:04.98\00:39:06.65 and the little hand two times 00:39:06.68\00:39:07.80 and they both end up on twelve, 00:39:07.83\00:39:09.13 it's a new day there. 00:39:09.16\00:39:12.58 He didn't say that, He said, Adam, 00:39:12.61\00:39:16.47 when you see the sun go down in the evening, 00:39:16.50\00:39:19.38 the day is over and the new day is beginning. 00:39:19.41\00:39:23.89 There was evening and morning, 00:39:23.92\00:39:26.02 the dark part of the day comes first. 00:39:26.05\00:39:29.33 So if it was the evening of the first day of the week 00:39:29.36\00:39:32.48 then the seventh day was just coming to an end. 00:39:32.51\00:39:36.15 Are you following me? 00:39:36.18\00:39:38.76 The seventh day was just ending. 00:39:38.79\00:39:41.55 So as in today's terms it was Saturday, 00:39:41.58\00:39:45.34 the sunset, it was Saturday night 00:39:45.37\00:39:48.24 and the first day of the week began 00:39:48.27\00:39:49.83 because the dark part of the day comes first. 00:39:49.86\00:39:51.98 This was the Saturday night meeting. 00:39:52.01\00:39:54.82 It wasn't a Sunday morning worship service, 00:39:54.85\00:39:57.19 why were they meeting? Well, you see why. 00:39:57.22\00:40:00.08 Right here, verse 9 and a few more verses. 00:40:00.11\00:40:02.93 "Seated in a window was a young man named Eutychus, 00:40:02.96\00:40:05.71 who was sinking into a deep sleep 00:40:05.74\00:40:07.29 as Paul talked on and on." 00:40:07.32\00:40:12.16 That encourages me 00:40:12.19\00:40:13.48 because I sometimes see people's heads nod 00:40:13.51\00:40:16.68 and they will come apologize to me, 00:40:16.71\00:40:18.32 pastor I'm so sorry, I felt, I say don't worry, 00:40:18.35\00:40:21.39 they fell asleep when Paul preached. 00:40:21.42\00:40:24.57 So who am I to get upset. 00:40:24.60\00:40:28.36 "As he felt into deep sleep, 00:40:28.39\00:40:30.43 Paul talked on and on 00:40:30.46\00:40:32.27 and when he was sound asleep, he fell out to the ground 00:40:32.30\00:40:34.92 from the third story and was picked up dead." 00:40:34.95\00:40:37.25 And let that be a warning 00:40:37.28\00:40:38.42 to anyone who falls asleep in church. 00:40:38.45\00:40:40.26 So what happened? What happened? 00:40:48.09\00:40:51.97 In verse 10, "Paul went down, 00:40:52.00\00:40:55.17 threw himself on the young man 00:40:55.20\00:40:56.56 and put his arms around him. 00:40:56.59\00:40:58.80 And he said 'Don't be alarmed, 00:40:58.83\00:41:03.16 he's alive!' 00:41:03.19\00:41:04.22 Then he went upstairs and broke bread and he ate." 00:41:07.26\00:41:10.21 Again, see breaking bread was just eating. 00:41:10.24\00:41:15.41 "Broke bread and they ate. 00:41:15.44\00:41:16.98 And then after talking until daylight, he left." 00:41:17.01\00:41:20.37 And verse 13 says, "We went on to the ship 00:41:20.40\00:41:22.98 and sailed for Assos, 00:41:23.01\00:41:24.21 where we were going to take Paul abroad." 00:41:24.24\00:41:26.08 Paul hiked 14 miles to Assos 00:41:26.11\00:41:28.13 on Sunday morning to catch a ship. 00:41:28.16\00:41:32.52 So why were they meeting on the first day of the week 00:41:32.55\00:41:35.62 because he had been with them all day Sabbath. 00:41:35.65\00:41:38.11 He was getting ready to leave, 00:41:38.14\00:41:39.28 he wants to spend his last few precious moments with them. 00:41:39.31\00:41:42.68 So he had another meeting Saturday night 00:41:42.71\00:41:45.70 and then Sunday morning he hiked to catch a ship, 00:41:45.73\00:41:48.32 that can hardly be understood as changing the Sabbath 00:41:48.35\00:41:50.98 from the seventh day to the first day of the week. 00:41:51.01\00:41:54.11 No. 00:41:54.14\00:41:55.17 Paul didn't do it. 00:41:58.32\00:42:00.81 Did the disciples? 00:42:00.84\00:42:02.02 Did any of the disciples changed the Sabbath? 00:42:02.05\00:42:04.87 Chapter 13 of Acts, in Acts 13, 00:42:04.90\00:42:08.00 let's see if there's any evidence to that. 00:42:08.03\00:42:10.19 In Acts 13, the Bible says 00:42:10.22\00:42:14.15 that, "Paul went to Antioch and on the Sabbath day 00:42:14.18\00:42:17.37 they entered the synagogue sat down 00:42:17.40\00:42:19.04 and after reading from the law and the prophets, 00:42:19.07\00:42:21.12 synagogue readers set word to them saying, 00:42:21.15\00:42:22.91 'Brothers, if you have a message of encouragement 00:42:22.94\00:42:24.43 for the people, please speak.'" 00:42:24.46\00:42:26.45 So here's Paul on the Sabbath 00:42:26.48\00:42:28.55 going in the synagogue to worship. 00:42:28.58\00:42:31.45 Now I need to make something clear 00:42:31.48\00:42:32.89 before we go any further as we talk about the Sabbath. 00:42:32.92\00:42:35.66 I'm not saying that you can only worship on the Sabbath, 00:42:35.69\00:42:40.32 I'm not saying that it's wrong 00:42:40.35\00:42:42.38 to worship God any other day of the week. 00:42:42.41\00:42:45.70 We should worship God every day of the week. Amen. 00:42:45.73\00:42:50.20 This isn't talking about when you worship God, 00:42:50.23\00:42:52.48 you worship God every day. 00:42:52.51\00:42:54.20 Now the Bible does say 00:42:54.23\00:42:55.40 the Sabbath is the day of sacred assembly, 00:42:55.43\00:42:57.71 it's a good day to come together and worship. 00:42:57.74\00:43:00.01 But we should worship God every day 00:43:00.04\00:43:01.86 and it's never wrong 00:43:01.89\00:43:03.65 to assemble together to worship God. 00:43:03.68\00:43:07.15 Well, here we are assembled together 00:43:07.18\00:43:08.98 at Sunday night. 00:43:09.01\00:43:10.92 It's not wrong 00:43:10.95\00:43:13.14 but what we're talking about 00:43:13.17\00:43:14.33 is that God rested on the seventh day 00:43:14.36\00:43:17.83 and said, "I want you to rest with Me." 00:43:17.86\00:43:21.00 That's much broader than just going to church, folks. 00:43:21.03\00:43:25.21 But today and that's what 00:43:25.24\00:43:26.55 John Paul II was all worried about. 00:43:26.58\00:43:28.66 He said it's not a holy day anymore, it's a holy hour 00:43:28.69\00:43:34.03 or didn't even that because Sunday isn't holy at all, 00:43:34.06\00:43:36.68 the seventh day is what's holy. 00:43:36.71\00:43:39.47 And maybe that's why God condensed to a holy hour. 00:43:39.50\00:43:42.82 So Paul observed the Sabbath 00:43:46.81\00:43:48.31 and then they say, "Come back next week." 00:43:48.34\00:43:51.14 Paul and Barnabas were leaving to synagogue 00:43:51.17\00:43:52.83 the people invited them to speak 00:43:52.86\00:43:54.11 further about these things on the next Sabbath. 00:43:54.14\00:43:58.05 Well, on the next Sabbath, verse 44, 00:43:58.08\00:44:00.31 almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord, 00:44:00.34\00:44:02.91 he didn't say well, now you have to wait till next Saturday, 00:44:02.94\00:44:05.01 tomorrow morning we're gonna be meeting now. 00:44:05.04\00:44:08.07 No, he didn't say that 00:44:08.10\00:44:09.18 on the next Sabbath they assembled. 00:44:09.21\00:44:11.24 14 years after the cross 00:44:11.27\00:44:14.49 and they're observing the Sabbath still. 00:44:14.52\00:44:16.26 Well, some say that's because there was a synagogue there 00:44:16.29\00:44:18.88 and it's was kind of handy to go. 00:44:18.91\00:44:20.43 Well, we discover in chapter 16:12 00:44:20.46\00:44:23.59 that "Paul went to Philippi, 00:44:23.62\00:44:25.31 a Roman colony and leading city of the district of Macedonia." 00:44:25.34\00:44:30.03 No synagogue there so what did he do? 00:44:30.06\00:44:32.06 On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate 00:44:32.09\00:44:34.12 to the river to find a place of prayer. 00:44:34.15\00:44:37.86 22 years after the cross we've already seen 00:44:37.89\00:44:40.00 three examples here of Paul 00:44:40.03\00:44:41.77 observing the Sabbath on the seventh day still. 00:44:41.80\00:44:45.11 In Thessalonica 17:2, "As his custom was, 00:44:45.14\00:44:49.44 Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days 00:44:49.47\00:44:52.91 he reasoned with them from the Scripture." 00:44:52.94\00:44:55.13 Six times already, 00:44:55.16\00:44:56.68 we see them observing the Sabbath. 00:44:56.71\00:44:58.57 Chapter 18:1, 00:44:58.60\00:45:00.17 "Paul left Athens, went to Corinth. 00:45:00.20\00:45:01.75 He met Aquila and Priscilla. 00:45:01.78\00:45:03.56 He stayed and he worked with them." 00:45:03.59\00:45:05.75 Verse 4, "Every Sabbath he reasoned in the synagogue, 00:45:05.78\00:45:08.97 trying to persuade Jews and Greeks." 00:45:09.00\00:45:10.78 Jews and Gentiles, both together 00:45:10.81\00:45:12.70 worshipping together in the synagogue. 00:45:12.73\00:45:14.19 Well, what did they do in there? 00:45:14.22\00:45:15.25 We'll come back to that. 00:45:15.28\00:45:16.40 "Every Sabbath--" how long was he there? 00:45:16.43\00:45:18.47 Verse 11 tells us Paul stayed for year and half 00:45:18.50\00:45:21.71 teaching them the word of God, 00:45:21.74\00:45:23.06 do the math, a year and a half times 00:45:23.09\00:45:25.26 52 weeks that's 78 times 00:45:25.29\00:45:28.52 that he observed the Sabbath there add the other six, 00:45:28.55\00:45:31.25 84 examples of disciples observing 00:45:31.28\00:45:34.34 the seventh day of the week 00:45:34.37\00:45:35.83 and zero examples of anybody ever observing 00:45:35.86\00:45:38.89 and making holy the first day of the week. 00:45:38.92\00:45:43.70 Jesus didn't change it, the disciples didn't change it. 00:45:43.73\00:45:48.41 Well, who did? 00:45:48.44\00:45:50.44 Well, I want to show you how it changed 00:45:50.47\00:45:52.77 but in order to do that I have to close the book 00:45:52.80\00:45:59.34 because it's not in here. 00:45:59.37\00:46:03.10 Where is it? 00:46:03.13\00:46:05.03 The history tells us, 00:46:05.06\00:46:07.37 early in the history of the church 00:46:07.40\00:46:08.60 we saw the Jews and the Gentiles 00:46:08.63\00:46:11.46 worshiping together, the church members 00:46:11.49\00:46:13.88 worshipped together. 00:46:13.91\00:46:16.41 They didn't just immediately split off the church 00:46:16.44\00:46:18.62 and the Jews, the church were Jews 00:46:18.65\00:46:22.27 that they accepted Jesus Christ. 00:46:22.30\00:46:25.92 And so they were, the only difference between the two 00:46:25.95\00:46:28.28 was some of the Jews accepted Jesus, 00:46:28.31\00:46:29.91 they were Christians, other Jews didn't accept Jesus, 00:46:29.94\00:46:32.45 they weren't Christians, 00:46:32.48\00:46:33.51 but they were still worshipping together. 00:46:33.54\00:46:37.83 But then it wasn't until 00:46:37.86\00:46:44.54 later when the Jews began to rebel against the Romans. 00:46:44.57\00:46:49.06 But the Romans came down hard on the Jews 00:46:49.09\00:46:52.26 and began to persecute them. 00:46:52.29\00:46:55.03 And when the Jews were being persecuted by the Romans, 00:46:55.06\00:46:58.22 the Christians who were worshipping there 00:46:58.25\00:46:59.78 with them got persecuted too 00:46:59.81\00:47:01.25 because in the eyes of the Romans 00:47:01.28\00:47:03.06 the Sabbath was the sign of a Jew. 00:47:03.09\00:47:06.42 And there were those Christians 00:47:06.45\00:47:07.48 worshipping together with the Jews 00:47:07.51\00:47:09.24 and they were getting persecuted 00:47:09.27\00:47:10.61 because of what the Jews did. 00:47:10.64\00:47:13.64 Now they were not happy about that. 00:47:13.67\00:47:16.65 And so they decided, hey, this isn't any fun, 00:47:16.68\00:47:20.28 we don't want to worship with those guys anymore, 00:47:20.31\00:47:22.18 we just keep getting beat up. 00:47:22.21\00:47:24.93 So let's worship on our own. 00:47:24.96\00:47:27.03 And they continue to observe the Sabbath 00:47:27.06\00:47:28.63 but they separated from the Jews. 00:47:28.66\00:47:31.71 But they continued to get beat up and persecuted 00:47:31.74\00:47:35.93 because they were observing the Sabbath 00:47:35.96\00:47:38.04 and the Sabbath in the eyes of Romans 00:47:38.07\00:47:39.60 was proof that they were still Jews. 00:47:39.63\00:47:42.19 In fact they turn so bitterly against the Jews 00:47:42.22\00:47:45.45 in the early church, this is the beginning 00:47:45.48\00:47:47.31 of the anti-Semitism that we know today. 00:47:47.34\00:47:50.92 And they turn bitterly against the Sabbath 00:47:50.95\00:47:53.00 because there was the Sabbath 00:47:53.03\00:47:54.16 that was causing the church to get persecuted. 00:47:54.19\00:47:57.48 Barnabas, 135 AD, wretched man those Jews 00:47:57.51\00:48:01.78 who were deluded by an evil angel 00:48:01.81\00:48:03.87 were abandoned by God. 00:48:03.90\00:48:05.87 They became anti-Jewish, Justin Martyr 150. 00:48:05.90\00:48:09.97 "It was by reason of yours sins 00:48:10.00\00:48:11.46 you Jews and the sins of your father, 00:48:11.49\00:48:13.05 the God impose on you the observance of the Sabbath 00:48:13.08\00:48:15.30 that there's a mark. 00:48:15.33\00:48:16.68 The purpose of this was that you 00:48:16.71\00:48:18.22 and only you might suffer the afflictions 00:48:18.25\00:48:20.20 that are now justly yours." 00:48:20.23\00:48:21.82 The Bible never says the Sabbath is a curse, 00:48:21.85\00:48:24.35 the Bible says it's a blessing. 00:48:24.38\00:48:26.17 But the church had become 00:48:26.20\00:48:27.89 so persecuted and turned so much against the Jews 00:48:27.92\00:48:30.89 that it cause them to turn against the Sabbath. 00:48:30.92\00:48:34.41 Now in Rome all of these forces were converging. 00:48:34.44\00:48:39.33 Because in Rome there weren't that many Jews. 00:48:39.36\00:48:42.41 In Rome the church was mainly converts 00:48:42.44\00:48:45.05 from the Pagan religions 00:48:45.08\00:48:46.89 where they worshipped the sun god 00:48:46.92\00:48:50.87 on the day of the sun, Sunday. 00:48:50.90\00:48:58.79 And so they decided, 00:48:58.82\00:49:01.47 they, hey, I'm tired of getting beat up 00:49:01.50\00:49:02.76 because of these Jews 00:49:02.79\00:49:04.00 and because we keep the Sabbath. 00:49:04.03\00:49:06.20 So let's keep the Sabbath at home privately 00:49:06.23\00:49:09.61 and have our worship services on Sunday. 00:49:09.64\00:49:13.46 And we can do it in honor of the resurrection 00:49:13.49\00:49:17.03 and furthermore it will make it 00:49:17.06\00:49:18.91 a lot easier for us to witness 00:49:18.94\00:49:20.53 to the rest of the pagans out there 00:49:20.56\00:49:23.41 'cause they wanted to change a day 00:49:23.44\00:49:24.86 and they won't have to become Jews 00:49:24.89\00:49:26.57 in their mind and keep the Sabbath, 00:49:26.60\00:49:28.29 it made a lot of sense to them. 00:49:28.32\00:49:30.72 It didn't make sense to the Bible 00:49:30.75\00:49:32.25 but it made sense to them. 00:49:32.28\00:49:35.48 So the church began to observe Sunday 00:49:35.51\00:49:37.18 until Constantine in the fourth century 00:49:37.21\00:49:39.10 became a nominal Christian and he passed Sunday laws 00:49:39.13\00:49:43.31 enforcing Sunday worship and forbidding Sabbath worship. 00:49:43.34\00:49:50.02 And that's how it all began 00:49:50.05\00:49:53.86 but the church finally met 00:49:53.89\00:49:58.04 at the Council of Laodicea in 364 AD. 00:49:58.07\00:50:03.04 I've been talking about this for years and years 00:50:03.07\00:50:05.17 and finally when the internet came out 00:50:05.20\00:50:07.96 I started searching around on the internet, 00:50:07.99\00:50:10.68 still couldn't find it. 00:50:10.71\00:50:11.84 But one day I found the Vatican website 00:50:11.87\00:50:15.30 and I started probing around in the archives of the Vatican 00:50:15.33\00:50:19.08 and I found it right here. 00:50:19.11\00:50:21.89 Council of Laodicea, canon 29 I printed it out, 00:50:21.92\00:50:25.32 so I could show you right here. 00:50:25.35\00:50:29.14 Christians must not judice, 00:50:29.17\00:50:32.67 be like Jews by resting on the Sabbath. 00:50:32.70\00:50:37.95 But they must work on that day 00:50:37.98\00:50:40.50 and rather honor the Lord's day, Sunday. 00:50:40.53\00:50:46.53 It was the church that officially decreed 00:50:46.56\00:50:50.43 that the commandment to keep the Sabbath 00:50:50.46\00:50:53.41 would now be observed by keeping Sunday. 00:50:53.44\00:50:57.60 It was the church, the Roman church, 00:50:57.63\00:51:01.97 the early church, the medieval church 00:51:02.00\00:51:05.99 that began to substitute the tradition of Sunday 00:51:06.02\00:51:11.28 for the observance of the Sabbath. 00:51:11.31\00:51:15.13 That's why John Paul II could say 00:51:15.16\00:51:18.31 the Lord blessed the seventh day 00:51:18.34\00:51:20.25 and made it holy therefore Sunday 00:51:20.28\00:51:22.67 is the Lord's day to keep holy. 00:51:22.70\00:51:26.79 Did he think that it was Saturday? 00:51:26.82\00:51:28.91 Did he think that Sunday was the seventh day of the week? 00:51:28.94\00:51:32.17 No, because he tells us 00:51:32.20\00:51:35.79 in catechism that he endorsed. 00:51:35.82\00:51:38.59 He said, "Sunday worship fulfills 00:51:38.62\00:51:41.90 the moral command of the Old Testament 00:51:41.93\00:51:44.09 taking up its rhythm and spirit 00:51:44.12\00:51:46.10 in the weekly celebration of the creator 00:51:46.13\00:51:49.04 and redeemer of his people." 00:51:49.07\00:51:51.86 Well, how can he say that? 00:51:51.89\00:51:53.10 What gives him the authority to say that? 00:51:53.13\00:51:55.67 Down at the bottom of the page. 00:51:55.70\00:51:57.81 The conference of bishops can abolish certain holy days 00:51:57.84\00:52:02.61 and transfer them to Sunday with their own authority. 00:52:02.64\00:52:07.77 The church has the authority to change the Sabbath 00:52:07.80\00:52:10.64 from the seventh day to the first day of the week. 00:52:10.67\00:52:13.26 That's how he can do it. 00:52:13.29\00:52:14.66 What makes him think he can do that? 00:52:14.69\00:52:16.62 The church does not derive 00:52:16.65\00:52:18.15 for certainty about all revealed truth 00:52:18.18\00:52:20.04 from the scripture alone. 00:52:20.07\00:52:21.60 No, both scripture and tradition 00:52:21.63\00:52:24.12 must be accepted and honored 00:52:24.15\00:52:25.50 with equal devotion and reverence. 00:52:25.53\00:52:28.05 John Paul II says, we did it, we change the Sabbath 00:52:28.08\00:52:31.35 from the seventh day to the first. 00:52:31.38\00:52:33.08 Rev. John O' Brien, former dean of Notre Dame, 00:52:33.11\00:52:36.99 at the university of Notre Dame says, 00:52:37.02\00:52:39.08 "The Bible does not contain 00:52:39.11\00:52:40.50 all the teachings of the Christian religion 00:52:40.53\00:52:42.69 nor does it formulate all the duties of its members. 00:52:42.72\00:52:45.74 Take for example the matter of observing Sunday. 00:52:45.77\00:52:48.58 Let me address my dear non catholic readers." 00:52:48.61\00:52:51.37 So he's talking to Protestants now, 00:52:51.40\00:52:53.72 "You believe the Bible alone 00:52:53.75\00:52:55.12 is a safe guide in religious matters. 00:52:55.15\00:52:57.21 You believe that one of the fundamental duties 00:52:57.24\00:52:59.02 enjoined on you by your Christian faith 00:52:59.05\00:53:00.89 is out of Sunday observance. 00:53:00.92\00:53:02.66 Where does the Bible speak of such an obligation? 00:53:02.69\00:53:05.32 I've read it from Genesis to Revelation, 00:53:05.35\00:53:07.64 I found no reference to the duty 00:53:07.67\00:53:09.31 of sanctifying Sunday in the Bible. 00:53:09.34\00:53:11.50 No the day mentioned in the Bible is not Sunday, 00:53:11.53\00:53:13.82 the first day of the week 00:53:13.85\00:53:15.08 but Saturday, the seventh day of the week. 00:53:15.11\00:53:17.46 It was the church, 00:53:17.49\00:53:19.95 the church which changed the observance to Sunday 00:53:19.98\00:53:24.20 in honor of the day on which Christ rose from the dead." 00:53:24.23\00:53:29.26 The church, but does the church, 00:53:29.29\00:53:32.48 does the pastor and preacher have the authority to change 00:53:32.51\00:53:38.37 one of God's commandments? 00:53:38.40\00:53:42.53 Can the church do that? 00:53:42.56\00:53:46.15 God knew that this was gonna happen, folks. 00:53:46.18\00:53:50.16 He knew it. 00:53:50.19\00:53:51.67 In case you're wondering about 00:53:51.70\00:53:52.78 what this has to do with Revelation. 00:53:52.81\00:53:56.16 The beast and the little horn are the same. 00:53:56.19\00:53:59.25 In Daniel 7:25 looking ahead 00:53:59.28\00:54:01.68 to the work of the little horn of the beast 00:54:01.71\00:54:03.91 he would think to change the set times 00:54:03.94\00:54:07.36 and the laws. 00:54:07.39\00:54:10.80 The beast would try to change God set times and laws 00:54:10.83\00:54:14.85 and now we've seen exactly how it happened. 00:54:14.88\00:54:18.80 And Rome even boast about having the authority to do it. 00:54:18.83\00:54:24.25 Well, pastor, why do all of the Protestants 00:54:24.28\00:54:26.63 still keep Sunday? 00:54:26.66\00:54:28.41 Because they stand on the scripture 00:54:28.44\00:54:30.38 and the scripture alone. Good question. 00:54:30.41\00:54:35.27 What do the Protestants think 00:54:35.30\00:54:37.32 about what we have just read? 00:54:37.35\00:54:41.26 I'm gonna read to you 00:54:41.29\00:54:44.32 from the printout to save time here, 00:54:44.35\00:54:46.17 these are all in your printouts, 00:54:46.20\00:54:47.37 so you will be able to go back and look. 00:54:47.40\00:54:50.97 Here's one Methodist scholar, Dr. Benny, 00:54:51.00\00:54:54.84 he wrote to Methodist Episcopal Theological Compendium 00:54:54.87\00:54:57.35 and you have to be able to say that 00:54:57.38\00:54:58.41 in order to graduate from the seminary. 00:54:58.44\00:55:01.35 He said it is true there is no positive command in the Bible 00:55:01.38\00:55:04.26 for keeping holy the first day of the week. 00:55:04.29\00:55:06.80 Christian church, Dr. Alexander Campbell, 00:55:06.83\00:55:09.47 founder of the Christian church wrote in the report. 00:55:09.50\00:55:12.05 "Now there is no testimony in all the oracles of heavens, 00:55:12.08\00:55:14.43 Sabbath is changed so, the Sunday came in its place." 00:55:14.46\00:55:17.44 Now, Baptists, there wasn't His commandment 00:55:17.47\00:55:21.50 to keep holy the Sabbath day 00:55:21.53\00:55:22.61 but that Sabbath was not Sunday. 00:55:22.64\00:55:25.02 It will however be readily said that 00:55:25.05\00:55:26.71 was some show of triumph that the Sabbath was changed 00:55:26.74\00:55:29.03 from the seventh day to the first day of the week. 00:55:29.06\00:55:31.28 I ask where can the record of that change we found. 00:55:31.31\00:55:35.06 Not in the New Testament, absolutely not, 00:55:35.09\00:55:37.83 there is no scriptural evidence 00:55:37.86\00:55:39.02 for the change of the Sabbath institution 00:55:39.05\00:55:40.88 from the seventh day to the first day of the week. 00:55:40.91\00:55:42.67 Of course I know how it happened. 00:55:42.70\00:55:44.77 Early in Christian history from the Christian fathers 00:55:44.80\00:55:47.67 but what a pity it comes branded 00:55:47.70\00:55:49.10 with the mark of paganism 00:55:49.13\00:55:50.77 and crimsoned by the name of the sun god 00:55:50.80\00:55:53.01 then adopted and sanctified by the papal apostasy 00:55:53.04\00:55:56.11 and bequeath as a sacred legacy 00:55:56.14\00:55:57.85 to Protestantism. 00:55:57.88\00:55:59.13 Dr. E. T. Hiscox, Baptist scholar 00:55:59.16\00:56:01.57 who wrote the Baptist manual. 00:56:01.60\00:56:05.09 They agreed with what I'm saying tonight. 00:56:05.12\00:56:07.65 No real Bible scholar will try to argue 00:56:07.68\00:56:10.94 that Saturday is not the Sabbath day, folks. 00:56:10.97\00:56:13.19 That's a fact, they won't, they know they can't. 00:56:13.22\00:56:18.15 But why did they keep Sunday? 00:56:18.18\00:56:20.12 I don't-- I can't answer that, 00:56:20.15\00:56:23.79 I just know that I want to follow the Lamb 00:56:23.82\00:56:27.00 and the word of God. 00:56:27.03\00:56:28.06 In fact I found this on the internet, 00:56:28.09\00:56:29.76 let me just share this with you, 00:56:29.79\00:56:31.41 it came from world net daily, this is about 8 years ago. 00:56:31.44\00:56:37.84 There's a pastor in Illinois who started 00:56:37.87\00:56:39.99 with $50,000 of his own money 00:56:40.02\00:56:42.05 for anyone who could produce a verse 00:56:42.08\00:56:43.46 in the Holy Bible showing that 00:56:43.49\00:56:44.92 God commands us to keep holy the first day of the week, 00:56:44.95\00:56:47.33 Sunday instead of the seventh day, Saturday. 00:56:47.36\00:56:50.71 50,000-- you want to get rich fast, 00:56:50.74\00:56:53.36 find one verse, 50,000. 00:56:53.39\00:56:56.02 Now watch this it gets better. 00:56:56.05\00:56:58.36 He will increase in $25,000 increments 00:56:58.39\00:57:01.99 every week capping it off at a million. 00:57:02.02\00:57:05.96 So you want a million dollars it's still out there. 00:57:05.99\00:57:09.00 All you need to do is find one verse 00:57:09.03\00:57:11.68 that shows from the Bible, Sabbath was changed 00:57:11.71\00:57:14.09 from the seventh day to the first day of the week. 00:57:14.12\00:57:16.05 Dr. James Orford, 00:57:16.08\00:57:17.48 professor of biblical interpretation 00:57:17.51\00:57:19.02 at Duke University, divinity school said, 00:57:19.05\00:57:22.19 "I'm afraid you're not gonna find the exact 00:57:22.22\00:57:23.93 Bible verse to counter the good pastor's challenge 00:57:23.96\00:57:26.14 and collect the reward. 00:57:26.17\00:57:28.83 As far I know there is no verse 00:57:28.86\00:57:30.56 which specifies that Sunday is a day 00:57:30.59\00:57:32.45 for Christians to observe the Sabbath. 00:57:32.48\00:57:36.35 Now the question to me is do I want to follow the Lamb 00:57:36.38\00:57:40.89 or follow man's traditions. 00:57:40.92\00:57:45.74 Follow the Lamb. 00:57:45.77\00:57:46.95
